The Goblinoid family!
This is a very broad genetic family, including goblins, bugbears, trolls and ogres.
I really wanted to get away from the jkr-style antisemitism around goblins so I chose to give them (and bugbears) a new look, similar to aye-ayes and tarsiers!
I kept that theming through all the subspecies of troll with the exception of the redcap, partially because I like the idea of them looking like old human men but in an uncanny skinwalker kinda way, and also because it’s pretty funny. Look at him.
Ogres are giants in the dnd “source material” but I wanted to change that up a bit just because. Because they’re swamp dwellers, generally leading amphibious lifestyles, their aesthetic theming is pretty different from the other goblinoids! I did this mostly because I think wotc ogres are super boring and wanted to play with some different anatomical ideas.
For instance: my version of ogres have aesthetic theming based around manatee, catfish, and beavers. I thought about making them jawless like a lamprey, but it wouldn’t really work with their size and posture, so I opted for a skull like a manatee.

Forgive me it's not exactly TAZ but I figured it's close enough to put on this blog. Had a dream last night featuring the Undermountain's newest comedy trio "My Bugbear, My Bugbear, and Me". I do not remember the bit they were doing in my dream unfortunately but the thought was going to sit in my brain until I finally drew it

Goblins in Human Folklore
This is a little list of goblins and goblin-like creatures that appear in folklore and mythology. I am making my own world of goblins as well, but these are the ones that come ‘from Earth’ so to speak.
Also, I’m not an expert on most of these, this is just little pieces of information about each one I could find. If anyone knows some more information about a specific goblin (especially the non-European varieties, though any other fun facts would be appreciated) then feel free to add them in the comments or let me know!
Goblins appear in many human cultures, though this is often to the great embarrassment of the goblin community as a whole. The goblins who reached Earth were not really the best ambassadors for their culture, and so their names have mostly been scrubbed from the memories of goblinkind.
European Goblins:
European goblins are often depicted as small, grotesque, almost monstrous creatures. Goblins sighted in these areas were vengeful tricksters, kidnapping humans or even cursing them.
Redcaps; murderous and malevolent, these goblins inhabit ruined castles in Scotland, and are known for soaking their caps in the blood of their victims. They are short, thickset little men with long teeth, skinny fingers, large red eyes and hairy shoulders. The way most humans deterred these folk was to read out Bible Scripture to them. The Redcap was so horrified by the fancy words and crucifix that he burst into flames and left behind a large tooth.
Hobgoblins; possibly the only good-natured goblin to set foot on Earth, the Hobgoblin was once considered very helpful and there was once one that resided in most European households. They were small, hairy little men, and did helpful household chores in return for protecting the home and being fed some table scraps by the human dwellers. They are very fond of practical jokes and could shapeshift (given this fact we can assume the Hobgoblin was a descendant of some Marsh Goblin community). Attempts to give them clothing would banish them forever, as goblins pride themselves on their unique style and efficient DIY skills.
Boggarts; the malicious cousin of the Hobgoblin, Boggarts are house-dwelling goblins that have been angered by the humanfolk and wish to do them harm. Sometimes thought to be a Hobgoblin transformed by the disrespect of the humanfolk living in the house, other times an upset Hobgoblin may hire a Boggart to replace them. Boggarts cause mischief by making things disappear, souring milk, abducting children, placing its clammy hands on sleeping faces, pull peoples ears, and pulling the bedsheets off people. Salt and horseshoe at the door of the house can stop a Boggart from entering.
Erlking; not actually a goblin at all, but an elf from Germany. The poor creature was probably devastated to be called a goblin by the humanfolk.
Kobold; the true German goblin, Kobolds can transform into non-human animals, fire, candles, and some may even have a human-form. In human-form they often look like small children. There seem to be three types of Kobold; ones that live in human homes, those that live in the mines, and ones that live on ships and smoke pipes. There are some stories where Kobolds can only enter and exit a home via the chimney. House Kobolds look like four-year-old children, wear peasant clothes, some have red hair and even a beards, and some still may have small tails. Mine Kobolds are short with bent ‘ugly features’ and have black skin and instead of a heart that have a glowing orb which is seen when these Kobolds are invisible (which is most the time). Ship Kobolds have thin hands like frogs, and have no body heat. These Kobolds are invisible almost always, and do not like being tricked into being seen by humans.
Trasgu; a goblin (possibly a gnome) who lived in Northern Spain, and has stories in a few mythologies. It was a mischievous goblin that tended to have a nervous character. Often appearing as a tiny man who limps with his right leg, has dark skin, wears red clothes and a pointy hat. He also has a hole in his left hand, horns, a tail, sheep's ears, and long legs. The female is smaller, with very thin long legs, and wears a tight dark brown dress. If treated well, this goblin would do household chores, if badly they would break kitchen vessels and scare the animals of the house. Either way though, they like moving objects around to prank sleeping humans, and any nocturnal noises are often attributed to the Trasgu.
Possible Other Goblinfolk;
Pukwudgie; a goblin-like creature found in Native American stories. Described as ‘little wild man of the woods that vanishes’ they had the ability to appear and disappear at will, shapeshift, lure people to their deaths, use magic, launch poison arrows, and create fire. They often look like a porcupine from the back and a half-troll/half-human being from the front. They used to be friendly with the humanfolk but not wish to be left alone, and could kidnap, push people off cliffs, attack them with knives, or use sand to blind them.
Muki; a goblin found in the caves of the Andes mountains. It is said he is a pale goblin that mines in underground spaces. He does not have a neck, his voice is deep, his hair is bright blonde and very long, and has a white beard. His eyes seem to reflect light like the metal he mines, and he wears a helmet, miner’s outfit, and studded boots. Unbaptised children were said to become Muki’s if they were kidnapped by the goblins. These goblins do not age, whistle loudly, and warn miner’s of danger. He is partial to cocoa, alcohol, and female company, and will aid the miner’s in their work if presented with one of these things.
Dokkaebi; known as ‘Korean goblins’. These folk were believed to possess inanimate objects, old household tools, or objects stained with human blood. They are often depicted as fearsome and awe-inspiring. They are often seen as mostly harmless but mischievous, and like to challenge travellers to a wrestling match. They make their own fire, tall and light blue flames, that herald their arrival. They have hats which grant invisibility, a magic club that acts like a magic wand, and they like red bean rice cakes. It is said that they brought good harvest, big catches of fish and good fortunes for humans, and defended them against evil spirits.
UPDATE: I am collecting my goblin posts on a masterpost here!

this too bc why not! i took a commission just recently drawing someone's bugbear oc, and to prep for it i messed around with proportions on bugbear faces in an old notebook. until now the only bugbear i've ever drawn has been captain hob, so i wanted to be sure my proportions were loose and i didn't same-face myself into accidentally drawing acofaf fanart instead. here's those sketches. :)
ID: Five pencil drawings on lined paper of bugbears from the neck up, varying in face shape and proportion. Each bugbear has wolfish eyes, heart-shaped brows, long ears, underbite fangs, and a bare face with a goatee-like tuft of fur on the chin.
One has high cheekbones, a broad straight snout, and wispy fur that falls over their face like side-part bangs. They look to the side regally. Another has a round, cheerful face with fluffy fur that stands up on their head like a short haircut. The bridge of their snout is curved impishly. Their ears are slightly shorter than the others' and are pricked forward as they smile warmly.
Another has spiky fur, slicked back at the top of their head, and an angular face, looking away mistrustfully. Another has a long face with a broad, pushed-in snout, high cheekbones and big, bushy eyebrows. Their fur is wispy and falls straight down from their face on the sides, while at the top it's combed backwards, and their ears are thinner than the others. They look a bit like an old wizard.
The last bugbear, shown in the second image, has a very broad snout and a round face, with tufts of fluffy hair and ears splayed, one up and the other down, cheerfully as they smile. End ID.

i miss ronya she was so cool. how's she doing these days
awww thank you!!! <3 <3 <3
I miss her too UvU
the game ended on moment when all the demons were defeated and sent back to hell (except for Nafanya and Gra'azt, who now became leader of big group of drow and continues to get more drow on his side from Lolth(shes not happy about it lol))
Ronya got married to goblin widow Hikt (they threw the bouket in Sarit's face so hehe he's next lol) and now Ronya is mama of Hikt's kids from her last marrige - one allready young adult goblin booy, little girl, and baby boy (I don't remember where I wrote their names rip OTL)
Tumblr media
(this hella cool bugbear design is work of my friend @tench-art)
Mao completelly turned into fairy and only had one year and one day left in mortal plane to live, and after that she will be joining the Wild Hunt
And Chiviss ( @tench-art 's character) became small demigod and now he had his own illithyd ship, his paladin friend Valya(they are in love but very slowburn/akward about it) and clone of human monk Lee who now has to help Chiviss by doing good things and help fixing stuff he fucked up - and Chiviss plans to travel across other worlds on his ship
AND WITH ALL THAT Ronya was left the only one to rule Fort Asshole (Sarit gave it that name and it stuck X'D ) the fort, that became shelter for many many people throghout our game - basically it was like big town or small city at this point
The game ended at Ronya being like "wait so whos gonna take care of the Fort now?"
and everyone were like "well now YOU are the queen of Fort Asshole, Ronya! your responsibility now byeeee"
and Ronya was like "WHAT THE FUCK IM NOT GOOD AT POLITICS AND MENAGMENT SHIT!!! IM GOOD AT CRUSHING DEMONS SKULLS WHAT THE FUCK GUYS"
But I think Ronya will found a union with other leaders of the different groups of citizens of Fort Asshole
such as orcs Hector and Azog, who represent the interests of orcs
myconid Lubomab, who represents the interests of myconids
Ronya herself as leader of goblins and bugbears
and half-orc Lidia, who represents the interests of everyone else and all kinds of minorities
and together they will come up with something X'D how to take care of the city and trading and etc. Fort Asshole became very important trading point, since now it has the big portal cirlce to the surface, while the last city(Malonderit, I cant find how the city should be written right, I only remember how it was pronaunced so eh), that had the portal to the surface - doesnt have it anymore. So yeah, Fort Asshole has all the chances of becoming big city eventually
I know from what our DM said, that at some point other bugbears of the city will become overly proud and will think of themselves more than other species, bc "our leader is so cool! she is the best and the strongest, and everyone else is weak loosers" so Ronya would have to beat some sense into them
she would tell them(more like angrily roar) that she would never get where she is now without help of her friends and comrades (hell she even DIED once and they had to get her ass a new fucking body), that everyone is equal here and that they should stop embarrassing her. And she would also add that its not bugbears who are stronger than everybody but its particularly HER who's stronger than everybody XD and if anyone of those bugbear assholes wants to argue with that - they can challange her to battle in orcs' arena and see if they could win her in wrestling battle. nobody's up for it? theN SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!!
ALSO Ronya promissed her wife Hikt that she won't be risking her life as much as she did during demon invasion anymore so I guess her life gets less adventurie now
She would gladly teach kids her knowladge of hunting, tracking, scouting, and nature of underdark in general... when she has time lol, bc being leader is hella busy job (she didn't want it but she was choosen to do it U_U )
(idk what else to add haha you can ask anything specific if you want. but im very pleased you want to know more about Ronya, Thank you)

i don't think so?? i don't really know MUCH of bugbears, rather than they like to scare children and others. but i did find something interesting,
ehem.
How do bugbears reproduce?
Genetics and Reproduction Bugbears reproduce in the typical fashion for goblinkind, finding a "mate" and forcing themselves upon them. Few bugbears bother to raise their children, often abandoning them as soon as they are able to move around on their own.
{source: worldanvil.com about bugbears, section genetics and reproduction}
[also one of the reasons i had cnc and/or dubcon in the bugbear nsfw hcs]
so as i said earlier, probs no; since goblins don't go into ruts, and bugbears are slightly mixed on goblins.
