sometimes I think about how much Toph's daughters must've meant to the rest of gaang when they were born, and then I think about how much more they must've meant to Toph herself And Legend of korra is telling me that Toph Beifong neglected her actual children like sorry but I'm not buying it and they seriously missed out on a great story with a badass single mom raising her two daughters with the best of her ability, and all of them sharing a connection as strong as stone.

Hi Anon, thank you for the ask, and your patience! Better late than never with my responses, amirite? LOL.

And I 100% agree with you. I think the Beifong ladies have a special place in the Gaang's hearts, and Toph will go fighting to the Spirit World and back for her girls.

I find it very difficult to watch the Legend of Korra for this reason lol. I know that part of it was to make Lin's backstory more nuanced and stuff, and while I love Lin's characterization, I hate that it comes at the expense of ruining Toph's.

I've never really accepted this idea that Toph was a bad mother because it was too difficult or outside her comfort zone. I think she'd lean on her friends a lot, especially if she had to do it alone, and even when the Gaang wasn't around to help with a particular situation, she's the type of person to face the issue head on, to tackle the obstacle and find a way for her to make her kids feel better.

Part of the issue is that Lin and Suyin's childhood is talked about in like, three episodes, and it's from the perspective of Lin and Su. There's definitely more to the story, and the fact that we don't have it is frustrating.

Also, I just have always believed that Toph would be a great mother. She'd be terrified at the prospect of taking care of a baby, but she knew that neglecting them or hiding them away from the world was not what she wanted to do. But she'd love her kids to death and would protect them as best she could and give them the life that they deserved. It would be tough for her to balance taking care of the girls and managing a busy work schedule, but she's Toph Beifong! She can do anything she puts her mind to.

And like you said, it would've been such a great story to hear about Toph raising her two girls by herself and them being extremely close through good times and bad. They would love visiting their aunts and uncles and traveling when they can, they'd have late night takeout dinners where they get to eat in bed together, and whenever they had nightmares, they'd all huddle up and "protect" each other from the monsters in the closet.

I get that not every story can be a happy one, but I still believe that Toph and her girls should've. And I will stand proudly on this hill LOL.

Anyway, I won't ramble anymore lol. I certainly have a lot of thoughts about the Beifong family, so if you ever want to chat some more, feel free to stop by! But I'll get off my soapbox for tonight lmao.

He would try and make it not a big deal while also trying to discreetly help you around and with your bending as much as he could

He'd trust that you knew how to get around without bumping into things and hurting yourself

He'd force someone out of the group to be with you when he couldn't and at the end of every day make sure you hadn't suffered any injurys

You'd bat him away mostly telling him he was acting like a mother hen causing him to laugh but you understood that he was only trying to help

You'd let him help you but also reassure him that you were fine on your own because even though yoy were blind it didn't stop you from bending or anything else

He's just try and mostly be around yoy 24/7 to make sure you didn't hurt yourself but also realised after a while thst yoy did need to have time to yourself and that you were capable of surviving without him for a while

Toph

Didn't make a difference to her and she was used to it because of her being blind too

She taught you how she got around and how to cope without your main sense

She wouldn't smother you because she was used to people doing that to her and she knew how much she hated it

Instead she just checked up on you at the end of the day and made sure you were fine and hadn't hurt yourself

She'd stop the rest of the group following you around to make sure you didn't hurt yourself and tell them you were able to hold your own

She'd understand the struggles and make sure you didn't have to go through them with you guys friends

Wouldn't leave you alone in fear of you like falling over or hurting yourself with your bending.

You'd have to explain to him multiple times how you were fine without him SMOTHERING you at any given opportunities

Baby boy only wants the best for you even if he doesn't know how to show it

Zuko

Before being banished he would assign a guard to you for when he couldn't be with you to follow you around constantly

After banishment he'd be with you whenever he could and would look after you and fuss no end

He'd be real protective over you when you finally met aang

Like sokka you'd have to remind him that you were fine without being smothered and if you fell it wasn't a big deal

He'd be worried for your safety especially with Azula out and about

But again he only wants the best for you

Even if that means smothering you in what is meant to be affection

Just cuz he doesn't know how to show it doesn't mean he can't

do u have any headcanons about the gaang’s kids? like who they would be closest to in the gaang offspring? or which parent they would prefer or career?

I don't have a ton of thoughts about who the Gaang's kids would be. I'm honestly not super interested in them. But I have thought about who the Gaang would be as parents.

Zutara and Sukka would be the top tier of parents. They would be family movie quality parents. The type of parents that in certain stories would have to be killed off in order to give the protagonist an angsty backstory to overcome because having a functional, loving family isn't interesting enough...😒That's not to say they would be perfect parents, but they would try very hard, be very loving and apologize when necessary, because they respect their kids as much as they love them.

Suki and Sokka would be sports parents. They would take their kids out and teach them to hunt, boat, ski, snowboard, martial arts and generally let them get into dirt and trouble. There would be a lot of broken bones and bloody scrapes among their kids, but they would have the best stories about how they got them.

Katara and Zuko would be more protective. It would be a struggle for them not to be too protective. They would also take their kids out and teach them how to fight both with weapons and bending, but they would be very serious about safety. Zuko would spend a year on sword safety and maintenance before he let any of his kids even touch a real sword, and Katara would be on standby to heal any ouchies or booboos. At the same time, they would also do their best not to make their kids scared to take risks. It's a delicate balancing act, and they wouldn't always succeed, but their kids feel safe and loved, and that's really all Zuko and Katara want.

Toph...I have a really hard time believing she ever planned on having kids, so I go back and forth about her being childfree her entire life, or her having Lin and Suyin and being a Lorelei Gilmore type mother (only way less girly). It's a bumpy road, and she messes up...a lot, but she loves her girls and is there for them....And also she doesn't disappear into a swamp and go no contact with them.

I have a really hard time picturing Aang as anything but a terrible father. I see him with multiple baby mamas. He'd be a weekend fun dad who only sees his kids occasionally. He bails as often as he shows up, and when he does show up, he takes the kids to places he thinks they should enjoy without actually talking to them about it. Once his kids reach adulthood, it's pretty much on them to maintain the relationship or let it die. He has one or two kids who he sees frequently, but only because they reach out to him and he considers them friends.

My hero is my mommy. When I have bad dreams, I sleep next to her and the spooky spirits go away. She’s super strong and tough, so bad guys and spirits are scared of her. She punched a guy in the face to keep me and my sister safe. He cried because she’s stronger than him. My mommy also tells the best stories! My favorite one is about a mama piggy that got stuck in a hole. When I can’t sleep, she stays in bed with me and sings songs. When I’m sad, she hugs me for a super long time and then we have a pillow fight (She always wins!)

I like how Gyasto II is fun-loving and playful. She inherited it from Aang. She likes playing pranks on her friends and family.

With Lobsang, although, she is kind and bubbly. She can also be belligerent and direct like Toph.

She was taught to be a pacifist by Aang and the monks at the Southern Air Temple; but her Mom taught her that's it's okay to be combative. She's not afraid to use violence as a last resort.

👑 - What's their favorite childhood memory? if they didn't have a childhood, would they like to have one?

Iroh II's- He and his twin were 5 years old. Their Uncle Aang and Aunt Toph were visiting them at the Palace with Lo(7) and Gya(3).

Toph let the girls play in the rain in the garden while he watched on the steps.

When Kya II and the Beifong sisters went inside, he stayed outside with Katara to watch the rain.

He pretends the rain on his hands is him waterbending. Katara smiled softly. With her arm around his shoulders, she brought him closer to her.

Kya II's- Katara dedicates her time in meetings to help impoverished villages, donate clothes, blankets, and toys, repair houses, and give them food.

When she was 12 years old, they were visiting a village when a moo-sow broke loose from the farm.

The farmers and some villagers try to help catch the animals. They were genuinely surprised when Katara rolled up her sleeves and try to get the moo-sow.

Kya II and the rest of the villagers cheered her on as she tried to catch it. Kya II even laughed when she fell in the mud during the chase.

She eventually does and is able to calm the wiggly creature. She lifted the animal over her head with victorious grin.

The villagers laughed and cheered. Everyone is just surprised and amused because former Fire Ladies would never.

Azusa's- Her favorite butterflies are monarchs. When it was her 9th birthday, her parents surprised her by taking her to a butterfly garden.

When they arrived home for her birthday party, Zuko gifted her a glass display case of monarch butterflies to hang on her bedroom walls.

Lu Ten's- (He's 6) Katara's and Zuko's friend, Jiang, visited them. He was in absolute shock when his Mama and Jiang revealed that they were pirates.

They go to the beach for a treasure hunt with a map the women drew and he's immensely excited!

His parents siblings are part of his crew with Azusa as his first mate while he's Captain.

Him and Azusa dig up the treasure chest filled with jewelry and chocolate coins. After that, Zuko treats everyone to ice cream.

The spirit did not look convinced. “Then why have you come here?”

He cleared his throat, attempting to seem more confident in what he was saying. “I- look. It’s just that… I want to learn about the Fire Nation.”

The eyes in front of him narrowed in angry understanding. “Ah, so that is who you wish to destroy.” He opened his mouth to protest. “Do not even try to deny it; I do have some knowledge of events that pass within the human world.”

“No!” Okay, yes, a little bit. But not really.” The owl seemed to be even closer to him though Sokka swore it hadn’t moved; he had to go almost cross-eyed trying to look into its eyes. He stepped back a pace and tried again. “Look. It’s true that the Fire Nation has done terrible things to us. They raided us over and over again, and now our sister is the only bender we have left, and they killed our mother. I do hate them. A lot, but…”

He paused, taking a deep breath before continuing. “We had a friend, who joined our group, and he was Fire Nation, and he was actually… alright. He even agreed with us that what the Fire Nation was doing was bad. And then he turned out to be their prince, and it turns out that the Firelord is awful even to his own family. But he got dragged back there, him and another friend of ours, and we need to get them back somehow. And… Aang here… Uh, he’s the Avatar, by the way.”

The was a flash of movement out of the corner of his eye that might have been Aang waving, but he didn’t dare look away. “He keeps telling us that there used to be good people in the Fire Nation, and… maybe there still are? People who also want the war to stop, who, uh…”

He felt like he was rambling, and he trailed off, sighing. “I don’t know. I still hate them so much, but… I just want to find out more about the place, okay?”

So this is another request about Toph and Lin bringing Su home for the first time.

What if on the other end of the spectrum, Lin is honestly afraid of her little sister. Not like she will hurt Lin, but she’s been told by so many people (Katara, Aang, Sokka, Bumi…) in the months leading up to Su’s birth, that babies are fragile etc.

It happened to myself when my younger sibling was born; I was so afraid to interact with them, to even touch them. Although I’ll admit, I tend to internalize things and overthink things ( I wasn’t aware that’s what it was back then).

I agree that Toph would do her best to prepare Lin, I feel like most parents do in this situation, but what if it wasn’t enough?

Like I said, I was just thinking about the flip side if the spectrum and what happened to my personally. You don’t have yo answer this if you don’t feel up to it, no hard feelings 😊

Seriously, though. I love asks and I love that people such as yourself still send them in from time to time, even though I'm not very punctual with my responses lol.

And I love thinking about different scenarios! I'm partial to my fluffy headcanons and AUs, but thinking about the other "what ifs" can lead to some great ideas, and potentially, stories. So I'm happy to oblige and talk about this!

So I think this is certainly a reasonable scenario for the Beifong family. Toph, in my opinion, was a great mother (even if canon didn't show it), but she doesn't necessarily go into the details of things unless asked to. When Lin says she's scared she'll hurt the baby, Toph just says "Don't worry, Lin. Babies are tough, you won't hurt her."

But for Lin, that's not enough. She likes knowing what she's getting into. She probably craves stability and that reassurance of knowing what's going to happen, and with a baby, you just don't know what's going to happen. Even as a kid, Lin can pick up on that.

So when Suyin is brought home for the first time, Lin sees all the adults holding her, and they're all happy and excited, but they're acting different, like Su is different. And they're very gentle with her. So if the adults are super gentle, does that mean Lin does too? How gentle does she have to be? What happens if she's not gentle enough?

The questions scare her, especially when she hears Suyin cry for the first time. That probably scares her even more.

It leads to Lin not wanting to hold Su or really interact with her until she's older. She just watches everyone hold and play with the baby, but she doesn't want to herself. Babies are tiny and fragile, and she doesn't want to hurt her sister.

Toph probably tries to get Lin to hold Su every now and again when it's just the three of them, but Lin usually declines. She'll sit next to Toph and watch Su, and just when she thinks she could hold her baby sister, Su ends up crying and that stops her from saying anything.

I think it would be a tough time for the family overall, especially if Lin never learns to feel comfortable around her sister while she's a baby. But, I think there would be hope that Lin comes around eventually. If not while Su is a baby, then when she's older.

Pre-league graveyard for my HeartGold Nuzlocke:

Clive the Gastly: Dead to Firebreather Walt on Route 35. Jokes on him though, cause I used him to train special attackers later on.

Thicc Mama and Thicc Papa, both Nidorans. The first died to a self-destructing Pineco while training. The other died to a crit from a Goldeen on Route 42, also while training. Never even had the chance to join the team proper.

Big Beebo the Mamoswine. Fully trained as a possible Lance counter, only to die to a trainer in Clair's gym. You may question me for sending out a ground-type against a water-type, but in all fairness, you don't expect a fucking Horsea to busy out a Hydro Pump.

Steelworks the Steelix: Almost done being trained as another Lance counter (curse can be OP), only to take a crit Water Pulse from Fisherman Wilton on Route 44. I have a newfound hatred for the Goldeen line.

Artoria the Dratini: Died to a Wobuffet in Dark Cave while I was looking around for Heart Scales. This one hurt the most to be honest. I thought the Wobuffet would be easy pickings and didn't know how Dragon Rage's fixed damage worked with counter moves.

Uzumaki the Poliwrath: Died during the battle with Ho-oh. Didn't realise Ho-oh had Extrasensory. That's on me for not researching I guess but that one hurt too, given he was the longest running team member to die.

Anyway, league team is looking to be something along the lines of:

personally, i like to believe katara is a shortie like me (i’m 5’1 at 18. no more growing for this girl.). but i have to consider how taller she is compared to aang and toph.

Lost

The summary of destiny, fate, and what’s written in the stars says “Aang and Toph meet. Over and over again.”, so, that’s what this is. Them meeting, that is.

There are few things, Aang muses when he slumps onto the hard metal bench, that he will forever remember.

(His father's clear grey eyes.)

(His mother's smile.)

(His grandfather's hand in his hair, and how secure he'd felt in his embrace.)

(The last words his wife had spoken to him.)

This moment, he is sure, will be among them in the future.

He will forever remember turning around and seeing his son gone, will forever remember the way his muscles had tensed when the boy hadn't peeked out from in between rags of children's clothes upon hearing his name (because he hadn't heard his name, couldn't hear his name), forever remember the bright blue trainers Kelsang is wearing, the cartoon monkey on his shirt and the rip in his right pants leg.

He will forever remember this overwhelming emptiness.

His eyes fall shut.

His nails dig into his skin.

Only twenty minutes have gone by, but he feels like he has lived through several thousand lives since he's realized his son is not playing an unannounced game of hide-and-seek, that he's gone, run, hidden, taken, and his heart has been racing, his mind has been, too, and his body vibrates.

His head hurts.

He can't have lost him.

He can't have lost him.

He feels tears form behind his eyes, and takes a deep, shaky breath, tries to think, of anything but his failure, of where to go next, of what to do, and in the back of his head, he can almost hear On Ji's voice, chiding him in harsh words.

(She would've never said.)

(She should say.)

He bends forward, and his forehead touches his knees.

He has failed her.

He has failed their child.

A moment later, a peel of laughter barely breaks through his haze, and for a second, he thinks he has lost it, that his body has decided that hysterical laughter is the next best thing to do without further consulting him, until he realizes how very familiar he is with this laughter.

(He hasn't heard it in months.)

(His heart burns.)

He sits up.

A tear drips from his nose.

Through wet eyes he sees his boy, walking beside a stranger and a large, shaggy dog, with a smile so broad on his face that his cheeks can barely contain it.

And he is mesmerized by that smile for a heartbeat, because Kelsang hasn't smiled, hasn't laughed like this since his mother has died, and the stranger, the woman beside him says something that makes him break out in giggles once more, and the world feels off, but perfectly alright just the same.

He jumps to his feet.

"Kelsang!"

The boy's head turns, and Aang is nearly knocked over by the brightness of his son's grin.

"Daddy!"

When Kelsang rams into him, everything feels right again.

He picks him up and presses a kiss to his cheeks, his nose, his forehead, the child sqiurming and swatting at him all the while.

"You're wet, Daddy."

"I was scared", he says, and oh, maybe he isn't okay again yet, because his voice cracks on every letter. "You can't  just go away, you can't just ... you can't just go, Kelsang. You need to tell me what you're doing – I thought – I thought somebody had taken you, I– You can't just leave, buddy."

He sniffles.

Kelsang pats his cheek.

"I'm sorry. But I saw Appa through the window, and he's so big, and I wanted to pet him, but–"

"Appa?"

Kelsang twists and points.

The dog barks.

The stranger sighs.

"He was following us", she says. "I didn't notice until he caught up to us at the traffic lights a few minutes ago. Turned right around with him. And we had a little talk about asking Dad for permission before running after other people's pets."

Her face is apologetic, quite obvious despite the sunglasses she is wearing, her fingers are closed in a white-knuckle grip around a cane, and it's not hard to tell that finding an odd child trailing behind her has been stressful (maybe not as much as it has been for him to find said child gone), though she tries to hide it behind an easy smile.

"I'm very sorry."

"It's not your fault."

It isn't.

"Are you mad?", Kelsang asks, buttom lip pushed forward.

Aang shakes his head.

"No. I'm– I'm–"

He is glad.

Unspeakably so.

The child in his arms – the child being in his arms – is the most important thing in the world, and he thinks he will never let him go again, will carry him and hold him close for the rest of his life.

His knees still feel weak.

"No, I'm not, buddy."

Not now.

Not ever, probably.

"Thank you", he tells the woman as Kelsang lets his head rest on his shoulder. "I don't– I don't know how to thank you. I will ... I have ... Thank you."

She smiles at them.

Some part of him registers, as he begins to work normally again, that she is rather pretty when she does so.

He holds onto his son tighter.

"No need to thank me. It's the least I could do, after Appa lured him away from you."

He produces a wet chuckle.

"He is very cute."

"People keep telling him that. It'll make him vain, I fear."

She scratches behind the dog's ears, whose tail thumps a happy rhythm on the concrete.

Kelsang is still struggling in his father's arms.

"Are we still gonna eat ice cream?", he asks, all sheepishness, all nervousness over being scolded apparently long forgotten. "You promised when we were home."

A small part of Aang thinks he shouldn't reward wandering off and following strangers.

The rest of him is willing to buy the whole ice cream parlour.

"Sure, buddy", he says quietly, and his eyes flicker over to the stranger, who is now dragging both hands through the dog's shaggy white fur. He doesn't think before he continues: "Maybe you'd like to come with us?"

She raises a brow.

"Only if you don't need to be somewhere", he hastily adds. "As a thank you, I thought. For bringing Kelsang back."

For making him laugh like that, and smile.

"If we're not intruding ... ? I'd thought you'd like to spend some time alone with him."

"Well, I'd also like to thank you."

"Okay then. Sure. Be aware, though, Appa eats ungodly amounts of ice cream." 

Aang grins.

"He does?"

"Hmmm. Coffee's his favourite. I'm Toph, by the way."

"I’m Aang."

my first headcanon

Amaya and Gren are childhood friends. He wanted so badly to be able to talk to Amaya that he begged her mom or her sister to teach him how to do it, and did it in secret because he wanted to surprise her.

As young adults, when Amaya joined the military he joined too, but they were in different units until she was promoted to General. She had him reassigned to her unit and asked him to be her official interpreter for all her troops.
