I made a coding infographic/slideshow for anyone getting into coding and are stuck! I'm seeing a lot of new codeblr blogs coming up recently and they're all beginners and I have been getting a lot of asks which basically all ask "I'm new to coding, how do I start?", so I decided to make this at 1am in the morning real quick! 🥲😭

A free website where you get specific problems to methodically learn small concepts of a programming language. Do 10 minutes to 1 hour every day, and then you will keep practicing every day, and you will be able to use the skills you learn in your real projects. They walk you through the problem all the way, and it's a super good way to learn!

@ all the people in the tag that are like: "wow bridget is awesome and guilty gear seems so cool too bad I'm too bad at fighting games to play them" literally the easiest to get into fighting games is to just find a character who you think is cool and play them. I initially picked up fighting games bc I wanted to play Kanji in the Persona one bc I like him and now I have thousands of hour in them. Like having a character you wanna commit to makes the learning process alot easier

I learned about this when I attended my 1st hackathon, I used the pack to get a free website domain (from Namecheap) and used Digital Ocean cloud services to host apps, and even tried out Educative's courses. Later, when I was hosting a hackathon, they released their ~hackathon hosting starter pack~ and it was great to have access to extra resources to support hosting virtual events!

I recently remembered this existed and wanted to promote it here, so if you're a student interested in CS/Software Dev, have a upcoming hackathon or just want to play around with some premium tools, pls take time to check this out!

Something exciting I noticed this time around is the addition of project template examples (Ex: Discord Bots) and a career readiness section 👀

Personally, I am still using: Codespaces, GitHub Pages, I *still* have my domain with NameCheap, and there's a handful of services they added that I want to check out now :D

You ever see something that is meant to be like...an overgeneralized statement for the sake of entertainment or comedy and not at all serious but it's about YOUR special interest and you are just sitting there trying not to explode with an entire explanation of why it's such an overgeneralized statement and the depth of the topic

#spitblaze says things #like. im not about to shame anyone about this. i WANT more people to be interested in video games as a storytelling medium #and calling someone a fucking casual about it Does Not Help #but it IS still a big big overgeneralization to say that all games in the 80s were simple arcade style deals #adventure games came into being in the 80s! maniac mansion and kings quest and snatcher! all 80s titles! #if we wanna go back even further the first Ultima game was 1979! as soon as we had the technology to make more narrative and complex games #we DID #obviously we see more of that now because its the easiest its ever been to make video games and put infinite thought and resources into #worldbuilding and narrative #and YEAH most 70s and 80s games were simple bc uh. our computers werent that good yet lol #but like. oh my god dragon quest and final fantasy 1 came out a year apart in thr 80 #do not tell me it was all run jump get the coin lol

do you have any tips for speaking to/reaching out to recruiters? i'm looking for new grad roles and ppl keep telling me to but i don't even know where to start or find any and all the articles online are so intimidating

The people are right, it's one of the best ways to put yourself out there! Oh, this is going to be a long one~!

I'll share tips from my own experience, this might help you, this might because I did it any other way but this:

I applied to a bunch of jobs: like for 5 days straight I was just apply just for the sake of it. The more jobs, the more recruiters have my CV/Resume in their database. I recommend LinkedIn the most as it's super easy to drop a message to the recruiter.

Applied to jobs that I had 50%+ chance of getting a call to: Obviously this means apply to jobs where you have the skills and the experience (work or in building projects etc). I say this because say they do call you but they ask you if you have this certain tech stack and you say no... end of call really. So, for me, I had like 2 or 3 things they were asking for in a candidate so I got through to the calling stage!

LinkedIn is actually your friend, don't be afraid: During my random job searching and whilst I was in my job, I had recruiters message me about job opportunities. Why? Because of my profile. You need to have your LinkedIn vamped up, check mine out for reference (click the LinkedIn icon). But make sure to have your skills e.g. About > Top skills, your work experience (paid or volunteer) and any certificates you have! If you're brave, not like me, start posting on there for a while.

LinkedIn again but Connections: Oh my days please follow people, even if you don't know them personally. I have 300+ connections (not to brag) but I only know like two handful of the people, the rest are of people who connect with people who I follow, I have met like 5 recruiters through this way.

Actually message the recruiters???: Okay so you followed the people, your CV/Resume is done and dusted and now you're ready to message those recruiters! In my case, I had more recruiters message me than the other way round only because I'm shy hehe so I wait for them to make the first move. They would probably send a whole message about the new job that have posted and see if you're interested and then, if you like the job, you can say "Yes please" or whatever is the appropriate reply is, and then they will send further information or arrange a phone call! If you want to message them first, I would find them more after applying for a job on LinkedIn, they usually add the recruiter in the job posting as a way for people to message them.

DO NOT FEEL AFRAID IN MESSAGING RECRUITERS: I say this because a) imagine 100 people apply for the job, only 5 would message the recruiter (I don't know if the stats are right, I just remembered that from bootcamp-) because everyone else is too afraid to do it! Missed opportunity! b) recruiters actually want people to message them. Now in terms of what to write to them? I don't know really. I would always go for the classic "don't repeat what's on your resume", they're going to read it anyways, so just talk a bit about your experience and skills A BIT like

"Hello/Hi, my name is [name]. I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to express my strong interest in the [Job Title] position at [Company Name], for which I recently submitted my application. I'm enthusiastic about the opportunity to join [Company Name] and contribute to [mention something specific you find appealing about the company or role, if possible]. I believe my skills and experience align well with the requirements of the position. Thank you for considering my application, and I look forward to the possibility of discussing my qualifications in more detail. Best regards, [name]

No hire, don't be sad: Even if they don't hire you, or go through the next stages, keep in touch by even asking questions about what's on the market/what's new, how you could do better for other jobs you want to apply to that were similar to the ones you failed at. They could point you to the right direction! One recruiter said she wanted me to have more projects I was passionate about online like on GitHub or GitLab, even if they were "silly" projects - at the time, I didn't have much projects online so it made sense! See, I took that advice and now I'm a project making machine (a bit)! Advice they give sticks forever!

Remember, reaching out to recruiters and applying for jobs is a numbers game. The more applications you submit, the better your chances of landing interviews. I really hope this helps and I didn't make too many spelling mistakes! This is all of the things I could note down from the top of my head!

I have come back with a new resource I've made! This time about how to learn HTML! I'm starting from the basics right now and working my way up of 'how to learn' info resources!😅

I've made a HTML resource in the past (one | two) but this one is a bit more detailed and has tips of how I studied HTML. I use HTML on the daily so though I would share my knowledge with more people. ya know, i spend a lot of my time watching various youtubers react to watching A:TLA for the first time, cuz i love the show and i love being a voyeur to other people's fangirling over pieces of media that i love lol, and one thing i've noticed is a pretty consistent fundamental misunderstanding of the fire nation's imperialism

everyone's first reaction is to 1) look for a reason for the fire nation's expansion and 2) both simplify and aggrandize it into "taking over the world"

no one i watch ever seems to recognize this as just.......a real political phenomenon that happens on a constant basis. that it is continually happening and being perpetuated in real life. like, this is just what most of the wealthy nations currently in our political landscape have done and are still doing. "taking over the world" is such a cartoonishly evil concept that there's a disconnect between that and the reality of it, which is bizarre because it's portrayed extremely realistically within the show, the magical powers involved notwithstanding. this is political conquest, it's economic exploitation, it's occupation and annexation and colonization.

it just feels so jarring to me to watch these reactors scramble for an explanation to something that is fundamental to the way most wealthy countries in the world function by default. and it would be one thing if these were kids, like idk how well i understood the premise when i was 12 years old watching it air on tv for the first time, but they're not. these are grown people in their mid 20s, these are adults presumably participating in society in the year 2024. they have to have heard of the concept of imperialism by now.

and i'm not trying to shame anybody. all of these reactors otherwise show great insight and understanding of the characters and the themes and the messages of the show. it's just such a consistent thing i've noticed across, what, like, 7 or 8 different reaction series? the shock and confusion displayed at the fire nation's imperialism, like they cannot think of a single reason that a nation might do something like this. as if greed and economic gain isn't enough of a motivation, or nationalism and racial superiority. as if we didn't all learn about various real-life countries "sharing their prosperity with the world" through violent occupation in school.

was everybody absent that day?? or is it just somehow harder to recognize when there's firebending involved??

Cryptocurrency mining is energy intensive because it requires highly specialized computers — and most of the electricity it consumes is generated by burning planet-warming fossil fuels. The climate-related economic damage caused by mining the popular digital token, Bitcoin, exceeded its market value on 6.4% of the days it traded between 2016 and 2021, the paper published in Scientific Reports on Thursday found.

Mining of Bitcoin, which represents roughly 41% of the global cryptocurrency market, consumed more energy than was used to power entire countries like Austria or Portugal in 2020. The mining of Bitcoin, Ether, Litecoin and Monero coins generated 3 to 15 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions from January 2016, to June 2018, according to research cited by the paper. That’s equivalent to the emissions of Afghanistan, Slovenia or Uruguay in 2018.

Bitcoin’s carbon footprint also grows over time because, to mine new coins, multiple miners compete to verify transactions on the blockchain.  The fact that an ever-growing number of miners compete to solve increasingly difficult operations means the overall energy use rises.

That’s why a Bitcoin mined in 2021 would have emitted about 113 metric tons of CO2 equivalent — 126 times more than one mined in 2016, according to the researchers. The paper estimates the economic value of that damage at $11,314 for a single Bitcoin mined last year, while the value of total climate damages generated by all Bitcoins mined between 2016 and 2021 could have been as high as $12 billion.
