Comic Book Saturday

I’ve read a bunch of compilations or collections by Instagram comic creators recently. This is sorta like that, but retro, since these are cartoons/comics that have been published in print.

Tom Gauld is a cartoonist for the New York Times Magazine as well as the Guardian and this particular collection is of cartoons done for the Guardian (for those that don’t know, it’s a paper in Britain. He has a weekly cartoon in the Saturday Review section). His humor is definitely unique (and at times dark), but, it can also be super observational (like a lot of the Instagram ones) and most of it was super super hilarious (or if not hilarious at least very very pointed). It was a fun read.

14. digital or traditional

i have NO training in digital art, everything i do is ink on paper with occasional digital edits. i respect digital artists so much though, they go from blank screen to majesty so quickly, its fuckin magic

21. something you would like to improve on

the process of formulating ideas, really. in school i visited a friends house and he showed me his desk, which he described as being his place where he "brainstormed for at least an hour a day" and i was taken aback by that. id love to have enough free time that i could just sit down and doodle with no pressure and no thought process, and just think about stuff for the sake of thinking about stuff.

22. what inspires you

other cartoons and comics, actually! i talk off my friends ears constantly with my favorite comics, animation styles, movies, cartoons, etc. i didnt realize i had such a fondness for cartooning until someone said to me "you know a lot about cartooning that ive never even heard of before" and it finally occurred to me that half the time i talk, its about cartoons.

briefly, my fav webcomics that im a huge fan of are cyanide and happiness, xkcd, smbc (which got less funny over the years and more just bleak and nerdy, finishing your degree and having kids can do that), poorly drawn lines (@pdlcomics reza is my ROLE MODEL i take so much inspiration from him) perry bible fellowship, channel ate, oglaf (NSFW), mr lovenstein, war and peas (@warandpeas), the red dot, the other end (@theotherendcomics), extra fabulous, rory blank (who deserves a lot more attention, he makes limited order t shirts every month), pictures for sad children (which if you know anything about how it ended, read this article about how the author isnt as bad as ppl say

and theres artists whom i love that arent exactly weekly webcomic artists but still cartoonists/artists in their own right, like graham annable (@grickle14, he has a new book im going to preorder) mateusz skutnik (who makes video games and comic books as well, im SO EXCITED for submachine legacy), Lev Yilmaz (@levniyilmaz, you can see one of his comics as the pinned post on my sideblog). god who am i missing...brad neely, yotam perel, keith stack and his wacky lesbian hour, sarah anderson for sure, god theres so many

In the opinion of the creators of the linked article, the best card game for parties is Joking Hazard, an 18+ card game made by Cyanide & Happiness, and which uses the art style from the cartoon. The art style is really simple, with the characters generally being in a white void, and being just a coloured circle, rectangle and lines. People that enjoy Cards Against Humanity are likely to enjoy this game too.

This game has very little in common with my game other than the use of cards. Though it does have one player separated from the others in what they can do, this player changes each round, whereas in my game, it does not.

Moving Forward

After taking the better (or worst) part of a week off to process everything, I started brainstorming my next move as continuing on with my "Death" poem right now was simply too difficult.

Initially I had considered animating a short clip of my Semester One Digital Character, Feya, but decided I wouldn't be able to her justice in her animation debut with the remaining time period.

I then explored more light hearted and funny concepts inspired by comic strips like Cyanide and Happiness, taking existing funny/dumb jokes and animating them - but ultimately decided I wasn't in a headspace to do something funny and witty right now.

I honestly found myself at this point in quite the creative rut and struggled immensely as soon as I took an idea forward into the story-boarding phase. That's when I came across this Youtube Short while looking for inspiration:

Rotoscoping is an animation technique that animators use to trace over motion picture footage, frame by frame, to produce realistic action. Rotoscoping can allow you to create more stylized or artistic effects, such as cartoon-like animation or silhouette-like cutouts. However, also has some disadvantages, such as being time-consuming, tedious, and repetitive.

While I understand this process will be very time-consuming and I am on a very tight deadline, by rotoscoping an existing dance video I am taking away the mental labour of story-boarding that was holding me back from continuing on with my animation.

The first dance I had contemplated animating was the current Tiktok dance trend to Taylor Swift's "Is It Over Now?". While I had a few ideas of how I would make this dance visually interesting when rotoscoped, the dance is only 10 seconds long and wouldn't be suitable to the 15 second minimum time limit I have been given.

After spending a good couple of hours looking at dozens of dance videos, I remembered an iconic 1975 (Sahara's favourite band) dance to one of Sahara's favourite song and knew this would be my final animation:

Walking animation.

I've created a new character design and kept it simple as i am not the greatest at drawing and feel if it has one simple style through out the whole thing it would feel better than inconsistent character designs with one looking better than the other so to do this I took inspiration from the comic strips and short adult cartoons cyanide and happiness.

I had multiple designs with how the arms should move but couldn't get it right as I was over complicating it and found out only 2 frames is exactly enough for walking animations. I finally decided on just moving the shoulders to give it more of a bounce when walking with help from the teacher.

i am very pleased with how the walking animation has came out and fits the style i was going for and will be easier for me to work on with when making other animations like attack etc, as the character is simple.
