The Monster in the Empty Room
The Monster in the Empty Room by daiki
His father reiterated the three Todoroki clan's family rules more times than he could count. He has memorized it out of spite and he can't wait until his younger siblings are older so that their father will repeat his litany to them instead. So even if he wasn't truly listening at the moment, he can answer the traditional monologue happening.
Seeing his father about to open his mouth (and most probably rebuke him again), Touya pushed away the hand on his head.
“Rule Number One, the Todoroki estate must always house a direct descendant. Rule Number Two, the empty room must remain empty and inaccessible to those not of our blood. And rule number three,” which is pathetic in his opinion but he wasn't interested in being punished right now for speaking his mind, “is to never bring red and gold inside. Well, whatever ‘red and gold’ actually means.”
Alternatively: Recently engaged Touya and Keigo had to move in to the Todoroki ancestral home due to unforeseen events. It might not have been a problem -- if it weren't them, if Touya remembered the rules, if blue flames from another time and space didn't hunt down a pretty red bird.

enji is not going to be redeemed even the narrative shows that he isn't even if shoto brought back his son. that would not take away all the horrible things hes done. as dabi said that the past never dies moving forward and being a hero will never erased his sins, his sins cannot be erased. if dabi is going to face punishment and so is endevor.
Okay, let's make something clear. Being redeemed is just a way of saying that a character is becoming a better person because they have the chance to do so.
Facing justice, in this case, is a vital part of getting redeemed. Because they are paying for what they did instead of pushing the blame onto others or running away from their past. There's no possible redemption for Dabi and Enji if justice is not involved, being honest.
I think a redemption for Enji would be in the form of quiting his hero job in order to try and help his family. It could be by staying away from the ones who doesn't want him in their lives while also being present in the lives of those who want him. That redemption would mean that he is finally priorizing his family and not his job, and therefore leaving his ego behind. Enji must be Enji, the father and husband and civilian, if he wants his family back. He cannot keep being just Endeavor, the one who still believes that his family will be better if he keeps being a hero #1.
If Endeavor is getting redeemed or not, we don't know yet. I can speculate that yes, he's gonna get on the road to redemption, but not completely redeemed. Horikoshi is going to show us he has a long way to go without telling if he will be able to make it or not. He must try, it doesn't matter what the future brings.
Why? Because bnha is telling you: "Listen, there's still a way. You can be a better person right now and it won't erase your past, but it'll certainly make the future more pleasant". Heroes try to save everyone, even villains. So Shouto's victory would be complete once he finds a way to bring his father and his brother back to the light.
Believe me, the narrative would benefit from keeping both Touya and Enji alive more than it'd be killing them.

Dabi's fear of feelings and connections
Tumblr media
Dabi is a walking contradiction; he says he doesn't care about anyone, but his flames, which are linked to his emotions, demonstrate otherwise when Twice is killed. Dabi brushes off the news that Natsuo could have died because of him but still refers to him affectionately as Natsu-kun. Touya went around calling Endeavor out for neglecting his children but still trained to regain his approval and attention anyway. He lashed out at baby Shouto, admitted Shouto had done nothing wrong, and then attacked him again years later. He cries blood while thinking about his family but doesn't go home to them or change his actions which hurt them even more. Dabi wants to destroy hero society for a better future but it's obvious he doesn't plan to live long enough to see that future.
The gaps between his actions and his words are a result of dissociation and repression. It's not that Dabi is emotionless. Actually, he feels too much and he's afraid of his feelings because they've done nothing but hurt him emotionally and physically. He literally almost burned to death the one time he had a burst of emotion on Sekoto Peak and in order to prevent a repeat of that, he operates under the flawed notion that safety lies in repressing his feelings and pushing people away. He lies to himself and others and therefore cannot reconcile with his true self and can’t trust others.
In this meta I'll discuss how Dabi deals with his unprocessed feelings of betrayal and neglect by denying himself connections with both his inner wounded child and those around him. I'll also address a few misconceptions surrounding Dabi because dismantling them is key to understanding him. Contrary to popular belief, he does not want to kill his father, he never wanted to be a hero for his own sake, and he doesn't hate Shouto or his family. At its core, Touya's hurt stems from discovering that his relationship with his father wasn't based on unconditional love. This realization destroyed his sense of self so much it caused him to start fearing his own feelings and being close to others because of the link between his emotions and his self-destructive quirk.
Tumblr media
To understand Dabi we have to understand Touya. In 291 we see through Endeavor's flashback that Touya was eager to train under him and carry his legacy. It's implied by the fact they’re working on ultimate moves that not only is Touya a willing, eager participant but that the two have been training together for quite some time. In 301 we learn that after Touya's quirk started hurting him Endeavor not only abandoned the training regime but also abandoned Touya both emotionally and physically. Instead of using the time he spent training Touya to help Touya find a new hobby or purpose in life, or just hanging out with his kid, Endeavor chooses to remove himself from Touya’s life. When Touya confronts him about the change of routine, Endeavor is seen putting on his jacket and leaving the home, his body turned away from his son.
Tumblr media
Maybe Endeavor had errands to run, but my point is that he was in Touya’s life one minute and then gone the next. Touya says so himself: why did Endeavor change his mind all of a sudden? The abrupt change in attitude was jarring for a 4-5 year old to handle. To Touya, training = love, so he felt compelled to keep training and demonstrate his worthiness despite the fact that his quirk was hurting him. To Touya, the pain was worth it if it meant hanging out with his dad again.
But why? Well, Touya was Endeavor's #1 fan, genuinely so. His admiration and fondness for his father was genuine, and he didn't question the triumphant look on Endeavor's face when Touya said he wanted to learn the ultimate move. Before his quirk started burning him, Touya had no idea he was born for his father's ulterior motives. He had no reason to question his father's attention. Touya lived under the impression his bond with his dad was genuine and special, and he probably felt lucky that his father was willing to share something so important to him (heroism). Even after the training stops and Endeavor stops paying attention to Touya, Touya still wears his merch and vies for his attention. Most kids see their parents as larger than life and Touya was no exception. Keigo Takami admired Endeavor the hero, and Touya Todoroki admired his father who just so happened to be the hero Endeavor. Since being a hero was such a big deal for Endeavor, it was a big deal for Touya.
But that's where Touya's story becomes tragic. His father is a flawed, flawed man with many insecurities and fallacies that he pushes onto his family. I’ll get to those in a moment, but as intelligent and observant Touya is to catch on that Endeavor never set out to marry to become a father, he is too young to separate himself from his father’s expectations. Touya realizes he was born for a purpose and Touya will be damned if he doesn't fulfill that purpose even if he knows it's wrong. His father's ‘love’ meant that much to him. For Touya, it's not about becoming a hero for the glory. It was about his relationship with his father because, as I mentioned earlier, Touya was his #1 fan in the sense that he loved Enji just for being his dad. There were no conditions tied to that. “You are my dad, and I love you.”
But that wasn’t a sentiment that Touya felt in return, and that hurt Touya. He internalized he wasn't good enough, that something about him was inherently wrong. But more than that, his world came tumbling down - he felt betrayed and lied to: his father didn't love him like Touya needed him to, and this truth destroyed him. Their relationship was a lie, a farce, and it hurt so much Touya became obsessed with not hurting anymore because he couldn’t get away from it.
Touya’s motivation to become a hero didn't rise from being inspired by All Might like Shouto. Touya’s thought process wasn’t "I want to be a hero to help others or be like All Might" like Deku. No, Touya only wanted to be a hero because he wanted his father to be proud of him for surpassing All Might. Notice that Touya's obsession with beating All Might slowly diminishes from “I can surpass All Might” to “I can surpass All Might like Shouto, too” to just “look at me, Endeavor.” It was never about being a hero per say, but about his relationship with his father. Touya realized that Endeavor isn't his father first, but a hero, and he understands that he has to be a hero too to fit into his father's world. Even upon realizing that his father was using him, Touya still wanted to be part of his life, still wanted that bond. Touya, in his desperation to be loved and accepted again, could look past his father's selfishness as long as he regained that approval. Touya could pretend the relationship was real as long as he stopped feeling so unlovable.
Tumblr media
This is unhealthy thinking, of course. Even if Touya somehow managed to regain Endeavor's approval, the relationship would still be one-sided and dissatisfying because he wouldn't be able to ignore the truth. But, this is how he rationalized his insistence to keep training in his 4-5 year old mind and this line of thought stuck with him as he grew up just as those feelings of inadequacy never left him.
Tumblr media
This is precisely why Natsuo's drowsy "can't you go talk to our sister?" hurt so much. Touya was already emotionally fragile, and hearing that felt like being rejected all over again when it was actually Natsuo just trying to sleep. Touya was hypersensitive to any words or actions that could be interpreted as dismissive. His trauma wouldn't listen to logic that Natsuo was 8 and too young to understand, that he was tired - no, Touya's brain said, you're being rejected again! This is also why he also stormed away crying from Fuyumi after she expressed her concern for him.
In Touya’s mind, why couldn't anyone just agree with him that he was good enough? He heard "your dad's right and you're not good enough so why try" not "I care about you, your father is wrong, and I don't want you to keep getting hurt" whenever Rei tried to get him to stop training because that's the message he got from his father, too. Nevermind that it infuriated Touya that his mother could stand there and preach to him when, from his perspective, she couldn’t take her own advice. All Endeavor ever did was teach him to turn up the heat, so why should it matter that doing just so hurts him? Touya didn't understand NOT training his quirk because he had been taught that raising his firepower was ideal in all situations. Those two statements didn't make sense to a 4-5 year old, a 13 year old, and it still doesn’t make sense as a 24 year old.
Tumblr media
To take Endeavor's lack of self awareness a step further, because it's important to understand Endeavor to fully understand Dabi, Endeavor has yet to realize his own inherent worth. He doesn't have to prove anything to his family, especially his kids. They love him unconditionally, without special reason aside from the fact that he's theirs and he's himself. However, Endeavor is so obsessed with proving himself that he doesn't realize he never had to, and he projects this onto his children. They must prove themselves by winning the genetic lottery, by being useful to his plans, by surpassing All Might.
The irony that to be a great father he doesn't have to be a hero at all is ugly because Endeavor has no identity outside of being a hero. Endeavor has said before he wants to be a good hero and father to make Shouto proud, but he fails to realize he already had this in Touya all those years ago and it still left him unsatisfied. The issue isn’t his role as a hero, it’s his inner self. In 301 Endeavor literally reaches out to Touya to talk him out of training and hurting himself, and Touya allows his father to touch his shoulders because he wants a bond with his father - any bond. Shouto, on the other hand, wouldn't allow Endeavor to touch him in 167 and slaps his hand away because he doesn’t want Endeavor’s approval. Endeavor doesn't realize Natsuo carries deep abandonment and neglect issues because he wanted to be accepted by his father too (light novel #5) but was ignored. Endeavor doesn't realize he was always good enough by default and that by projecting onto his kids and trying to be the top hero he’s doing the opposite of what he wants. He just keeps pushing away his family.
Tumblr media
It’s important to point out Endeavor’s illogical thinking because Touya learned some of these same ideas. Touya repeatedly tries to prove himself without realizing that he was always good enough by default. The problem wasn’t his quirk or his body, but his father’s flawed thinking and self-worth issues. Now as an adult, Dabi is selfish because he's Endeavor's son and emobidies his most negative characteristics. Dabi thinks of his flames as Endeavor's, and he thinks of himself as an extension of Endeavor because that's how Endeavor set him up for life. Touya has no identity to fall back on after his father casts him aside. He was supposed to be Endeavor 2.0, but now that title is Shouto’s. Dabi doesn’t hate Shouto as a person, but he has tricked himself into believing Shouto is their father’s puppet. Shouto is a doll being used by their father with no self agency, and Dabi is going to break all of Endeavor’s toys. It’s nothing personal against Shouto, it’s just Shouto’s bad luck that he happens to be Endeavor’s masterpiece. This is why Dabi doesn’t hurt Shouto when they first meet at the training camp, and why Dabi stops attacking Shouto after Endeavor passes out - it’s not about Shouto. It’s about Endeavor, and breaking Endeavor. Touya is still there trying to be part of his father’s world, only this time not as a hero but as a villain who will end his own suffering. He doesn't want Endeavor to die, he just wants him to suffer, to ruin his dreams. Dabi thinks of it as justice.
Tumblr media
But because Touya is still there, there is still that goodness in him, too. His connection to Fuyumi and Natsuo is still there, repressed and compartmentalized. It’s why he calls them affectionately as Fuyumi-chan and Natsu-kun. Touya’s pain is so great he has decided he’d rather end it than to carry on and look elsewhere. He's stuck, rightfully so. He recognizes his mother is a flawed person and ultimately doesn’t blame her for being a victim - she could have done more for her son, but he still sees her and his other siblings, even Shouto, as people who fell victim to Endeavor’s abuse who don't challenge their situation. Dabi sees himself as someone who does stand up to the abuse but doesn’t realize he still wants his father’s attention. He's always wanted it. That's why he went around at 13 condemning his father's treatment of his children but still trained to prove himself. This is part of the reason he became a villain.
Tumblr media
Not to mention that Dabi literally can't cry. He has no way to release those emotions, so instead of trying to let them out, he pushes them down. But that doesn't work and is detrimental in the long run. In 290-294 we saw Dabi's flames burn so hot during his confrontation with Endeavor and revealing himself as Touya that his burns have spread. Dabi is afraid of his feelings because of their connection to his flames, but he also uses his feelings to his advantage. He wants to go out in an inferno along with Shouto just to hurt Endeavor and put an end to his own suffering and Endeavor's career. This is why Dabi doesn't bother calming himself down or denying that he never forgot how he was treated when he lived at home. Dabi became emotional in that battlefield, smiling maniacally instead of crying because he physically can't cry. In his mind, if his feelings are going to destroy him, he might as well use them to prove a point. After all, he has experience being used. It's why he was born.
I'm not saying any of these actions or thoughts are healthy or correct or condoned, by the way. Trauma responses don't make logical sense and usually aren't healthy. Knowing how the mind responds to trauma, it's understandable that Touya still wanted his father's attention even if it was abusive. In fact, this is how children often respond to abuse. Their caretaker/parent is all they know and they cling to these figures. Often times when authorities try to remove a child from their abusive parents, the child doesn't want to go because this parent is all they know and they do feel like they love their parent/caretaker. I’m not saying the authorities got involved in this case, because obviously they didn’t, but this same mentality of abused children can be applied to Touya. Touya, in his four year old mind, probably convinced himself that if he was good enough everything would go back to how it used to be.
So, to sum up Dabi’s character, of course he doesn't make any sense. He’s still that hurt 4-5 year old who is trying to protect himself from ever getting hurt like that again while still wanting his father’s validation. Of course he doesn’t want to get close to anyone, not even the League. He doesn't want to be vulnerable or let people in or form connections because the last time that happened he was let down, forsaken, and it hurt so much it literally made him lose control of his quirk to the point he almost died. When Twice is killed, Dabi consoles himself by saying he didn't care anyway, all to prevent another emotional fire. Dabi is a master of compartmentalizing and boxing away his feelings - this is probably why, 310 chapters into BNHA, we have yet to have a few chapters in his POV or his backstory. He's disconnected from himself. He knows his plot to get justice will hurt his siblings and mother and to live with himself and move forward he represses those feelings.
Because of his father not showing up on Sekoto peak, Dabi has to live with physical disabilities due to his scars and memories of burning alive. He doesn't want to go through that again so he lies to himself that he doesn't care about anyone or anything. He denies that he's still in pain while simultaneously seeking validation of his pain. He acts like he doesn't care about his family but still calls them affectionate names. He acts like he hates Endeavor and calls him by his name but still wants his attention. He decided long ago that he would die destroying Endeavor's career because that was the thing Endeavor cares about most of all in this life. It's a "you hurt me so I'll hurt you" mentality. He has tricked himself into thinking this is justice, failing to realize this won't make him feel better if he doesn't die by his own hand along the way.
Dabi is full of resentment and spite, both of which take root from feelings of abandonment, betrayal, and the loss of a purpose and the realization that he wasn't born to be loved for who he was but as a tool for his father. The first betrayal he suffered was in the form of realizing his father didn't love him genuinely, and this was identity-breaking for him. He never recovered from it. The second betrayal, the reinforcer, was his father not showing up to Sekoto Peak. Since then, Dabi is reliving his trauma over and over again the more he uses his quirk and the more he faces Endeavor. To be saved, Dabi needs to accept that he is loved unconditionally and needs to be validated that he was right to feel thrown aside and used.

Heya! I absolutely love your stories! I was wondering if you could do a fic of Shouto and Dabi having a tickle fight? If so, thanks! If not, I understand. Thanks for taking your time to read this!💕
Bonds of Blood
Fandom: My Hero Academia
Characters: Shoto Todoroki, Touya Todorki (Dabi)
A/N: Sorry if this is a bit awkward. I couldn't really think of many scenarios. Spoiler warnings ahead. I fell out of my Hero a while ago and I'm not sure exactly where the anime is yet but yes.
Description: Shoto runs into a bit of trouble during his walk home at night from school. However, it seems he has a bit of a "guardian" watching out for him.... but not without reward.
____
Shoto glared at the tall figure standing over him, lips pursed, fists clenched. "Well now, what do we have here," a familiar voice sang out as they began to walk around the smaller. Shoto felt panic start to rise in him as his older, allegedly dead brother started to circle around him. "Touya," Shoto grumbled as he tried to keep his eyes on the other.
"So, you remember my name," Dabi said in fake astonishment. He cockily bowed before snorting. "I thank you for such... recognition." The smaller felt a blend of emotions boil inside of him. He had missed his train and decided to walk home, only to be jumped by a low life thug.
However, the thug failed to realize that just because this boy came from wealth, didn't mean he was defenseless. But before Shoto could react, a blaze of blew sent the man running; leaving his knife behind. A knife that Touya retrieved as he came up from his bow. "Huh, that guy was really all bark and no bite." He tossed the dull blade over his shoulder before approaching the smaller.
"What do you want," Shoto growled, his hand starting to burn up. "I just wanted to stop by and say hi to my little bro, ya know?" Shoto swung. Rather unexpected but like hell if he trusted his brother. "Whoa!" Dabi avoided the punch before letting out a laugh of amusement.
Was this kid serious? "I just save you from a laughing stalk wielding a butter knife, and that's how you thank me?" Shoto braced himself for an attack, but Dabi just stared at him, studying him. He eventually turned on his heel to leave. "Well, whatever Sho. Nice seeing you again." Shoto was stunned, beyond confused. He shook his head before letting out a rather bold yell.
"So what? That's it? You run away for how many years, then try to kill Natsuo... no, even worse." Shoto felt so much rage building inside of him. "You hired someone to kill our brother. You couldn't be bothered to do it yourself!"
Dabi stopped before turning on his heel once again with a rather freaky smirk and lidded eyes. "Like I didn't know the old man was gonna save him." What? Shoto's stunned expression lured Dabi in closer. "If you remember, the guy wanted Endeavor to kill him. Why do you think I sent a clown like him as opposed to a skilled hit man to 'kill' our brother?"
Shoto wasn't following; which was no surprise to the older. He stood inf ront of Shoto now and bent down slightly to meet his brother's height. "If I wanted Natsuo dead, he'd be dead. What I wanted was for Endeavor to kill that guy, for Endeavor to get a bad rep. Got it? I want him to fall, and for all his little secrets to be aired out," Dabi said while mockingly poking his younger brother in the stomach.
Shoto flinched, but his eyes were wide. He pushed the prodding hand away, but his reaction merely made Dabi smile like the Cherise Cat. "Uh oh," Dabi said teasingly. "Don't tell me, wait. Is little, baby Shoto Todoroki still ticklish?" Shoto tensed. Shoto went to hit him again, but this time his wrist was grabbed and he was twisted so that the older was now behind him.
Panic struck first before an intense urge to laugh. Dabi wasted no time searching for a reaction as ten fingers started moving up and down his little brother's sides. Shoto let out a laugh in his surprise before quickly trying to cover his mouth while pushing the hands away.
"Ah, ah , ah," Touya teased. "You think you can get away that easily little Sho? Remember, I'm still your big brother." Oh no. Shoto felt himself being fully turned around as his brother pulled him in to an awkward hug. His back was to Dabi's front as arms held him tightly. He felt the other's warm air touch his ear, causing him with a mix of fear and anger. "Which means," Dabi said tauntingly, "I know all your worst and most ticklish spots."
Oh no. Dabi quickly moved to either side of ribs, squeezing and scratching at them the best he could with his brother's school uniform on. Shoto turned his head away form his brother's amused smirk while he tried to break free.
"H...He-eh.... s-st.....grrr...mmm!" This only amused the older more as he moved up higher, causing the duo color eyes of the younger to widen. Shoto let out a strangled squeal as he tried to compose himself. However, his underarms were just too sensitive. He felt his knees weaken quickly and his face heat up as the older got the better of him.
Finally, Dabi was rewarded with what he had been searching for: laughter. Shoto let out a genuine, adorable laugh as he weakened against his brother's grasp. His head fell back onto the other, as did most of his body weight; which Touya was not expecting.
The older stopped to quickly balance them before letting out a small sound of annoyance. However, this was Shoto's opportunity. He turned and quickly threw his bag at his brother before awkwardly running towards the nearest busy street.
Once he reached the sounds of people and business, he turned back to see... nothing. Letting out a small sigh, he frowned. He kind of enjoyed the bonding moment, but without knowledge of his brother's motives.... he didn't want to risk falling into a trap.
However, finally arriving in his room, he was met with quite the surprise as his school bag sat waiting for him with a to go container of cold soba. Maybe his brother wasn't all evil after all.

some follow-up thoughts on BnHA 306
mostly Deku angst, but also a little Baku angst (and some TodoBaku angst) mixed in for good measure. because there’s plenty of angst to go around.
1. “if I’d only been stronger...”
I’ll talk more about Deku later in this post as well, because there’s definitely plenty to talk about; this is the most character development he’s gotten in almost 200 chapters. but for starters, I want to discuss the possible parallels between Deku’s current character arc, and what is arguably the most iconic moment of angst/character development in the series.
Tumblr media
remember how this kid, who up until this point had rarely seemed to give two fucks about the world around him, suddenly revealed that he blamed himself for being the downfall of All Might? remember how it came almost out of nowhere? how he’d been hiding it, and trying to suppress it? “but even if I try to forget... sometimes it all just comes rushing back.”
yeah. so anyway, I got to thinking -- if being the cause of one hero’s downfall could affect someone this badly, what about being responsible for the downfall of all heroes?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
what if a boy who wanted nothing more than to keep people safe suddenly found himself at the epicenter of a disaster that killed hundreds, possibly even thousands of people?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
now obviously, this is not the sole thing that’s troubling Deku right now; this kid has a whole array of traumas as of the War arc. like, you know it’s bad when Society As We Know It Coming To An End Partially Because Of You is the least of your problems. but still, I think this is worth bringing up, because the hero kids blaming themselves for things that aren’t their fault is hardly anything new. and yet, what with everything else that’s been going on -- all of the Todoroki drama, and Vestige revelations, and hospital antics, and political strife -- I feel like it’s easy to forget or overlook this little detail.
the fact is that AFO put this entire plan into motion solely in the hopes of finally obtaining OFA. every single thing that happened at Jakku -- Tomura powering up; Machia waking up and going on his rampage (after being ordered to do so by Tomura); and even Dabi/Touya choosing this moment to finally strike (because he knew this was when the reveal would do the maximum damage -- when people’s faith in heroes was already wavering) -- every last bit of it can ultimately be traced back to AFO’s desire to steal OFA. which, obviously, makes it AFO’s fault, not Deku’s. but then, Kamino wasn’t actually Katsuki’s fault either. it wasn’t his fault the villains went after him (but he blamed himself anyway), and it wasn’t his fault that people got hurt in the ensuing battle to save him (but he blamed himself anyway).
just. I think we’re underestimating just how strong of an impact all of this likely had on Deku. we haven’t really had the chance to see him process it yet. he’s been too busy, and there have been too many other things going on. but I’m telling you guys, that empty look in his eyes in the final page of the chapter? I can all but guarantee you that at least some of that emotional weight is coming from this.
sure would be nice if he had a friend who knew exactly what that was like, and could help him process the guilt and all of the other associated emotions, just like Deku once helped him. unfortunately I’m not so sure things will be that easy this time around. anyways though let’s move on to a couple of other thoughts and speculations.
2. “...and I bullied him.”
one of my least-favorite BnHA fanfic tropes is the one where the rest of class 1-A somehow finds out about Katsuki and Deku’s history -- i.e. that Katsuki bullied Deku throughout most of their childhood. mind you, it’s not the concept itself that I dislike; it’s mostly how it’s used. a lot of times it’s just an excuse to have all of the other kids turn on Katsuki and ostracize him; either because the author thinks that’s what he deserves, or else so that Deku can eventually come to his rescue and defend him and shame the rest of the class for not seeing how much he’s changed. either way, it’s usually pretty awkward to read, and more often than not the characters are pretty OOC (especially Ochako and Todoroki).
however! there’s a big difference between fanfic and canon, and just because I’m not a fan of this trope in the former doesn’t mean it couldn’t be executed well in the latter. and lately I’ve been thinking about this a lot. mainly for three reasons:
the recent (can we still call it recent?? well whatever) scene where Katsuki confessed to All Might that he used to bully Deku is now one of my favorite scenes in the entire series, and proof that this can be executed well.
both Todoroki and Deku have finally had their respective big secrets revealed to the rest of the class. so like, idk. feels like it just might be secret-revealing season now, you know?
and lastly, as a result of Deku’s secret about OFA finally being revealed, the rest of 1-A now either knows, or can extrapolate, that he used to be quirkless.
and from there, I feel like it’s not all that hard to put two and two together with how terrible Kacchan and Deku’s relationship was when they first started at UA. that’s not a terribly difficult puzzle to solve. so I feel like it might come out anyway, and if so, I’d prefer Bakugou telling them himself, and taking responsibility as part of his atonement process. because we know that he regrets it. we know their relationship has changed. we know that he has changed. and so I think I might like to see this.
alternately, if confessing to the entire class is too much, at the very least I could see him confessing to Shouto, because I’ve always felt like this was one of the big things that made Katsuki so resistant to letting Todoroki call him a friend. because I feel like there’s a part of Katsuki that saw the parallels between Endeavor’s abuse of Shouto and his own bullying of Deku, and thought, he wouldn’t be so quick to call me his friend if he actually knew the truth. and so there’s actually been this roadblock wedged between them this whole time that Shouto doesn’t even know about. because Shouto hates Endeavor. and so it’s not such a leap to assume he’d hate Katsuki too if he knew just how terrible he’d been to Deku when they were younger.
not that I think he actually would! actually I don’t think either of those things is actually true (because Shouto clearly doesn’t hate his father either, in spite of everything that’s happened). but the point isn’t what I think -- the point is what Katsuki thinks. and I really do think there’s a good chance he’s worried about Shouto hating him, and it’s one of the things that’s made him so reluctant to accept his friendship. anyway, so I’m really just rambling now, but you get my point. I don’t know if this is actually going to happen, but it’s a scene I would like to see if Horikoshi decides to indulge me.
3. “...so when you wake up, please give him my best.”
Tumblr media
and now, as promised, back to Deku.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ngl guys, when I first saw this image, my immediate thought was that Gran must have died. because I mean, hello, leaving U.A.?? donning himself in his teacher’s old cape?? empty, exhausted look in his eyes?? what else were we supposed to think lol.
but maybe that was an overreaction. because when I think about it more, Gran’s death isn’t strictly necessary in order to push Deku over the edge. first of all, there’s already the whole “hero society is in ruins now because of you” thing I mentioned earlier. but also, there are just so many other things. like, let’s just list them here because omg. what a rough couple of days this kid had.
he was forced to battle TomurAFO and was terribly injured in the process (most of which was his own fault, but he wouldn’t have gone that far with OFA unless he felt like he had no choice)
and it wasn’t just him that was injured, either. in fact, even though he tried to act as bait to keep everyone else safe, he wasn’t able to stop three of the people closest to him from nearly being killed right before his eyes
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and of course that last one was especially traumatic, because it was Kacchan, and because he had to watch Kacchan nearly die just to protect him. out of all the things that Deku witnessed in this arc, this might be the one that had the biggest impact on him
he was also basically helpless to do anything to protect Shouto and Endeavor when Dabi showed up. so again, we have this running theme of people he cares about being hurt and him not being able to save them
and he also got sucked into the OFA Interstellar Dream Vortex for a brief spell during the battle, during which he learned that AFO had possessed Tomura. more importantly, he learned that Tomura was Nana’s grandson, a fact which was only briefly touched on during that scene, but which I think wound up being the trigger to the whole avalanche that ended with Deku leaving UA. but more on that in a moment
anyway so just to wrap this all up, the battle eventually ended, Tomura got away despite all of their efforts, and then Deku wound up comatose in the hospital for two days. which brings us to the most recent chapters, during which
Deku learns that he will be the last wielder of OFA, whether he likes or not
Deku learns the identity of the last two mystery OFA users
and then at some point, he wakes up and presumably talks to Gran, and winds up with his cape
something happened during these last two scenes which helped to push Deku over the edge. I won’t delve into the matter of the Second or Third users for now, although most of you already know my suspicions regarding that, and I do think that would fit into the general pattern here (that is, the pattern of Deku feeling more and more strongly that he is putting the people around him in danger, and his fear of losing them becoming so overwhelming that it eventually pushes him to leave).
but that’s not what I want to talk about for now. what I want to talk about is Gran. specifically, what it is that Deku discussed with Gran. and this is where we come back to that reveal I mentioned earlier -- that Tomura is Nana’s grandchild.
Tumblr media
basically, what I think happened is that Deku mentioned seeing Nana in the OFA Zany Psychedelic Spirit Void, which led to the topic of Tomura, and the fun fact Deku recently learned about him being related to Nana. this, in turn leads to Gran divulging his various regrets about everything that happened with him and Nana and Kotarou. his intent is to apologize to Deku for placing the burden of their failures on him. unfortunately, the part that Deku actually gets fixated on instead is this:
All for One hunted down and killed Nana’s son (and probably her husband as well), and stole her grandchild and psychologically tortured him into becoming a mass murderer, for no other reason than that Nana had once held OFA
in other words, AFO can and will hurt and kill anyone Deku is close to, anyone who has any kind of connection to him at all, without mercy, and regardless of whether it actually gives him any kind of tactical advantage or not. he’ll do it simply to hurt him. no other reason necessary.
I don’t know about you, but for me that would be a terrifying realization. and for Deku, I think it just might have been the tipping point.
so, let’s recap.
Deku learns that AFO is after him
AFO/Tomura very nearly kills several of Deku’s most important people, including Kacchan
and then he learns that this is just the tip of the iceberg, and realizes that all of their lives are still in danger and will continue to be as long as Deku is AFO’s target
and then add to all of this the misplaced guilt about society already being shambles, and the heroes already having more than enough to worry about. they’re barely holding things together as it is. and we already know how Deku feels about being a burden to them:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and so instead, he leaves. of course he does. in hindsight, I think this was inevitable.
the question is, did anyone else also put the pieces together in time to realize what Deku was planning before he actually left? specifically, did Katsuki, who understands Deku’s self-sacrificial nature better than anyone else, see the signs and put two and two together? like he did back at Jakku?
Tumblr media
and if he did, would Deku have been willing to accept his help again?
Tumblr media
somehow, I can’t help but think it might not be that easy this time.
anyway, so that was a lot of rambling, lol. sorry about that. I JUST HAVE A LOT OF FEELINGS about all of this angsty shit. tired nomad Deku needs hugs and comfort and someone to reassure him that he doesn’t have to face this alone, and that everything is going to be all right. HE IS JUST A LITTLE BOY. this is too much, and I cannot handle any of these feels, and oh my god, somebody please help him.

Affectionate moments with the Todorokis
Request: Can I get some Todoroki fluff and when I say todoroki I mean all of the todoroki children thank you very much- anonymous
Okay now we can proudly call Dabi a Todoroki. The waiting is over, we’ve won this war ladies and gentlemen. I need some soft Dabi right now so I’m happy to oblige. Love ya. 💖💖💖
masterlist
rules
warnings: fluff, maybe some angst if you squint
Dabi/ Touya Todoroki
Tumblr media
-He isn’t the most affectionate person both in private and out in public.
-The maximum effort he will put while out in public might be just a hand on your lower back to ground you when things are kinda spiraling out of control.
-But apart from that nothing.
-Now when you were just fuck buddies he couldn’t care less about affection.
-He was just here to have some fun and then he was out the door.
-But when things change drastically between the two of you and he realizes that he really can’t stand the idea of losing you, his demeanor changed.
-He had come to see how important you were and how dependent he had become of your presence.
-Boy really couldn’t function without you around.
-So he changed his antics around you.
-He no longer left after your shared nights and he would even go as far as to hold you or help you clean up.
-You thought that that was the most you were going to get from him, that he had nothing else to give apart from those moments of affection.
-You were wrong though.
-After a rather hard mission he would come and cuddle you  out of nowhere.
-He would bury his face in your neck as his torso lay between your legs while you gently stroked his hair.
-It would help him fall asleep most of the time but on the rare occasion he could manage to stay awake he would talk to you.
-Those conversations weren’t of any value; it was dumb stuff that came to mind and he just felt like sharing.
-Then after one too many close calls he would begin to tell you your importance.
-After witnessing you almost getting killed time and time again, making his heart almost come out of his mouth every time you nearly dodged an attack he couldn’t hold back.
-He would pepper you with kisses as he would flip you over so you were on top of him, your head tucked into his neck while his rough cheeks would rub on your plush ones.
-It always hit him hard when he couldn’t protect you.
-He wasn’t *that* stupid, he knew his job wasn’t to protect you and that you could handle yourself better than anyone in that dumpster fire of a league but he couldn’t stop himself from worrying.
-Those shared moments of pure domesticity and normality between the both of you made it hard for him to deny that he was indeed falling in love.
-And he hated it because he knew that at some point, when push comes to shove, he would have to choose between you and his goal.
-And he wasn’t so sure what he would decide to follow.
-When you broke the news to him that you were expecting, around the time Shiggy was putting his grand plan into action, he knew what he would choose in an instant.
-But you wouldn’t budge; you knew what his dreams meant to him and you wouldn’t let him throw it all away for you.
-He could have this new life after the battle, after the dust had settled and all had been revealed.
-So, with a camera in hand, you helped him make the masterpiece that would show the world who Endeavor really was.
-And you couldn’t be prouder of your lover.
Fuyumi Todoroki
Tumblr media
-Ahhh soft girl hours.
-Okay now Fuyumi is the type of person to go all out for their significant other.
-So PDA is on the table even if it makes her a little uncomfortable at times.
-She’s kind of a people pleaser so as long as you are happy she is happy no matter how uncomfortable she might feel at the moment.
-But like the great girlfriend that you are, and because you would kill for her, you push her to tell you what she really thinks about certain situations.
-And the moment she tells you that PDA is kinda meh, you yeet yourself away from her.
-Holding hands wherever you are is a must, a request or rather a demand made from the queen herself.
-She just likes feeling you next to her and what better way than holding your hand?
-Apart from that demand of hers she never ever asks for anything else in that department.
-Like girly believes that you have to earn your love and others won’t just give it to you.
-That you need to prove yourself as useful so you can get affection.
-An effort-reward dynamic.
-And you can safely assume that we can’t have that here.
-THIS IS A LOVE INFESTED HOUSEHOLD GET YOUR ASS HERE AND TAKE SOME OF MY LOVE.
-When you ask her to move in with you, she sees that as her opportunity to shine, to show you that ‘oh I’m not useless’.
-Baby will try doing all the house work and such.
-You legit have to call her to cuddle.
-You’ll be working on your laptop, sprawled on the couch when you see your girlfriend just mopping.
- “Fuyu come here.”
- “But I still have to-”
- “Forget about that, you’ve done enough I just want to hold you.”
-She just flushes bright red before putting the mop away and moving to settle in your lap.
-Her head is on your shoulder while she plays softly with your hair, her legs stretching across the coach as you continue to type mindlessly on your computer.
-You give her the occasional forehead kisses while she nuzzles your cheek.
-Last we have chaotic girlfriend hours when she’ll straight up straddle you and start doing your makeup.
-You both burst out laughing every five minutes because you get overwhelmed due to the fact that she’s a) straddling you and b) she’s too close to your face and you can’t help but want to kiss her.
-I want a girlfriend…..
Natsuo Todoroki
Tumblr media
-College boyyyyy.
-He is in general a neutral person.
-I mean he will give you a kiss on the cheek while he is leaving for his class but he won’t full out make out with you in front of others.
-So things are pretty chill between you two.
-He has almost the same mindset as Fuyumi so at first he would try to prove himself to you so he would be worth your love but once you caught on you smothered him.
-Now baby loves his kisses.
-He needs them to function okay?
-Every morning he will wake up and if you have slept over he will wake you up with nuzzling his nose in your neck and softly tracing shapes on your stomach.
-Then after his kiss good morning and his first I love you of the day he is ready to go.
-If however you are in your dorm/apartment, he will sulk until he sees you.
-He has that puppy love.
-Natsuo suffers from trauma from his family.
-It’s common knowledge.
-He hates looking weak, especially in front of you, so whenever he has a fight with his father or Touyas’ anniversary rolls around he tends to become distant.
-Try as you might, you can never truly get him to speak to you about those issues and let you help you.
-You weren’t part of his childhood, you don’t know what it was like but you can try to make him feel better.
-In reality you were ready to devote your every waking minute to him if he let you.
-But that Todoroki pride gets in the way and he doesn’t let you see him like that.
-Until the villain attack when his father saved him.
-Endeavor looked so genuine when he talked to him and all he did was scream at him.
-Was he too cruel?
-So he made his way to your apartment and without missing a beat he attached himself to you and finally, finally, letting himself be vulnerable.
-After his break down you started to rock back and forth before turning on your stereo and putting on a slow song.
-Taking his hand you started dancing in the middle of your living room, Natsuos’ arm wrapped around your waist bringing you flush to his chest as his head stayed buried in your hair.
-You would hum the tune as you moved around.
-This became somewhat of a ritual whenever things got bad inside his head.
-You would just put on that song and calm him down.
-And that was the best thing someone has ever done for him.
Shouto Todoroki
Tumblr media
-Ah poor baby.
-He is touch starved like very touch starved.
-My mans is out there longing for someone to tell him it's okay since the age of five.
-Anyways.
-He really doesn’t know how to communicate his needs though so you’ll have to figure out on your own what he wants.
-He might recoil at first but don’t be disheartened.
-Baby has been abused ever since he was born so of course he will be reluctant to let anyone touch him.
-Subtle things are the go to at first.
-Linking your pinkies under the table or maybe sitting closer to  each other.
-Kisses are rare and far apart but they exist.
-Now things change after some time.
-Depending on his relationship with his parents that is.
-When his dad starts to try and redeem himself and he wants to be an active part of his sons’ life *GET THE FUCK AWAY BITCH*, Shouto is really conflicted.
-Especially when he doesn’t get his hero license on the first try.
-So that’s when his touch starved side comes into the light.
-He’s stressed out of his mind and he needs comfort but of course he doesn’t know how to convey that to others.
-You pick up on it and start giving subtle reassuring touches.
-Squeezing his hand when you notice him spacing out.
-Giving him a quick hug before he enters class in the mornings.
-And as time goes by you peck him on the cheek before he leaves.
-He becomes addicted and soon enough he’s initiating things on his own, giving YOU kisses each morning and coming to your dorm for “study” dates turned to cuddle sessions.
-You guys have a ritual for whenever things get extremely bad; when he can’t seem to stop flinching away from sudden movement, when he can’t recall anything about his older brother or when Endeavor says something again about his friends/you.
-He will come to your room with a pillow and some snacks if he remembers them.
-You’ll put on a movie and he’ll just sit in between your legs, his head tucked under your chin as you run your fingers through the soft strands.
-He might break down, he might not, it depends each time.
-But he knows that this time he doesn’t have to face anything alone, that he is loved and cherished and that you’ll be there to pick him up when everything seems meaningless.

sighs ....childhood friend!dabi.
tags/warnings: 18+ ONLY! angst, noncon, mentions of abuse (as in touya’s childhood and “death” at 13), heavy death themes, manga spoilers ab dabi’s past. wc: 1k
you know about all the shit that endeavor’s put him through. you know how much he’s hurting. he’s come to you crying more times than you can count. his life is chaos, but you’re his refuge —the only person he still loves. you bandage his burns, beg him to stop destroying himself, blame yourself for his escalating anger. a piece of you breaks when you’re thirteen, and his mom tells you that your best friend is dead.
flash forward ten years, and you’ve tried your hardest to move on. you’ve distanced yourself from the todorokis, although it breaks your heart to see endeavor on the hero rankings, to see shouto at the ua sports festival. the youngest todoroki was just a toddler when you last saw him, and now he’s a hero in his own right, holding his own against the biggest villains in the country.
like everyone else, you’re scared. it’s hard for you to trust the heroes to keep you safe when you grew up watching the #2 destroy his family.
you lock your doors. you double check to make sure that your windows are closed. you’ve always been cautious, living alone in such a big city, but the league’s activity has made you especially vigilant.
dabi thinks it’s pitiful, really, that you think a simple chain lock is going to keep him out. he’s attacked ua, for fuck’s sake. it was easy for him to melt through your locks and enter while you were sleeping. you look so peaceful, but so different. he’s kept tabs on you, of course. he’s thought of you every single day for the past decade. it took all his self control to stay away, but fuck, he’s going to die soon anyways, and he can’t wait anymore.
he wants to be gentle. you deserve gentleness, but all of dabi’s softness died at sekoto peak. like steel in a forge, he’s remade himself into a blade. he’s a weapon now, all sharp edges and danger. he knows that he’s disfigured and terrifying, so he can’t blame you for screaming when he wakes you up. but you can’t blame him for clasping a big hand over your mouth and pressing your body into the mattress.
he just wants you to be quiet for a moment so he can explain. he knows that you’ll understand. you promised, back when you were kids, that you’d love him forever. you told him that you’d stay by his side and take care of him, no matter what. it hurts that you don’t recognize him, but once you realize that your best friend is back for you, you’ll understand. you have to understand.
but, fuck, he can’t help himself. not when you’re looking up at him with those big, teary eyes. not when your body is pressed against his so deliciously, soft and sweet against his sharp edges. all rational thoughts leave his mind.
you freeze up when he bends down to kiss you. it’s so unexpected, so intimate — even though the kiss itself is a violent clash of teeth and tongues — that it leaves you reeling. your brain is still foggy with sleep, and in the darkness, you can just barely make out the intruder’s face. it’s enough, though, to identify him. cold staples press into your skin as he cups your cheek, and the metal of his face glints wickedly in the hazy moonlight.
“please stop.” your voice comes out much shakier than you intended. you cringe at how small, how weak you sound. “i-i don’t have much money, but you can take anything. i won’t tell anyone, dabi, please just go.”
his eyes, just barely visible in your dark room, narrow at your words. your throat constricts with fear. all your instincts are screaming at you to run, but you can’t escape, not with his body pinning you down.
dabi knows that he should explain, but he can’t. the sound of his new name on your lips just sounds so wrong. he’s your touya. he’s supposed to be your touya.
you gasp, and he realizes that he was muttering out loud. he expects to see joy on your face at his revelation, but instead there’s just... fear? confusion? sadness?
“touya is dead.” your voice is barely a whisper, and more tears pool in your eyes. “my touya is dead.”
“i’m not dead.” his voice is hoarse, but his words are clear.
you shake your head in disbelief, and start squirming, fighting with all your strength to push him off. panic rises in your throat, burning through you like acid. your hands beat at his chest as choked sobs leave your lips. “go, let me go! you’re not him, he’s dead, he’s dead!”
his hand grips your jaw and forces you to look into his eyes. his familiar eyes, the voice in your brain whispers, but you push it aside. it’s not touya. this crazed murderer, this villain, is not your touya. he wanted to be the greatest hero — how could he have grown into a monster?
he kisses you again, even more violently than the first time. he can’t help it. he’s missed you so much, has dreamt of this moment for years. his sharp teeth cut into your soft lips, and you cry out, but there’s no one to hear you. no where to escape to, when he’s caged you in with his body. his hands roam your chest, your thighs. the feeling of his charred skin against yours makes you cringe.
this isn’t touya. this is not touya. he may have the same bright eyes as your touya, but they are not the same person. touya wouldn’t do this — wouldn’t hold you down, wouldn’t shove his fingers in your mouth to keep you silent, wouldn’t keep snapping his hips against yours as you begged for him to stop.
everything about him is so fucking familiar but different that it hurts. the man in front of you is some cursed perversion of your touya, some monster sent to haunt you. he wears your touya’s face, although it’s burnt and bruised. he smiles your touya’s smile, but all the innocence is gone, replaced with a hint of madness.
this is not your touya. your touya is dead, and dabi wears his corpse.

Ash and Dust Part 16- Silent Support
18+ Dabi x fem!reader (MINORS DNI)
Summary: You first meet Dabi on the worst night of your life after unwittingly walking into the very bar the League of Villains made infamous. That should probably be the end of the story. You stumble on the remnants of one of the most infamous terrorist groups in the history of Japan, get viciously murdered or call the cops and get them arrested, the end. Except that’s not the end of the story. It’s only the beginning.
Link to change y/n to your actual name (not mobile compatible)
Masterlist Kofi (Help Lulu)
“But yea, so I’m almost done at this point and would be happy to set up a time to show you all of the final paintings.”
“Great, I will have a receptionist at my agency reach out to set up a time.”
You hesitate for a moment on the call, worry stopping you from immediately hanging up.
“Hey Todoroki?”
“Yes?”
“Everything ok? You seem off.”
There’s a wry chuckle down the line followed by a heavy sigh.
“You’re very perceptive, (y/l/n),” Shouto admits.
“I try to be. What’s up with you?”
“Do you recall that private family vigil I told you about? It’s in a few hours and I’m feeling… conflicted.”
“Conflicted?”
“I hated the man most of my life and right to the end I barely tolerated him. Still... he was my father.”
“Yea… That’s true,” you reply, mind starting to spin.
“Anyway, like I said I’ll have my receptionist reach out. Thank you for all your hard work.”
“Of course. Take care of yourself Todoroki.”
As you hang up the phone you can’t help but replay Shouto’s words over and over again in your head. Dabi still hasn’t talked to you about Endeavor’s death at all. Even with the new intimacy the two of you share, his past and his father remain unexplored territory. As much as you would like to believe he truly doesn’t need to talk about it, you know that’s not the case. He gets twitchy sometimes, like he’s itching to do something but doesn’t know what. You’ve learned to keep the tv far away from news channels because any mention of Endeavor has his hands smoking, even more so if there’s explicit mention of his death. You haven’t pushed the issue because things have always felt so fragile between the two of you, but you’d be lying if you didn’t say you were concerned by just how much Dabi hasn’t bothered processing Endeavor’s death. Sometimes you think he’s forgotten about the pro’s death entirely before catching himself.
“You’re looking particularly constipated,” Dabi notes as he exits the kitchen, taking a bite of an apple as he comes to join you on the floor of the living room. He lies down with his head in your lap and your hand instinctively goes to his hair. The casual touching is new but it already feels scarily natural.
“I’m thinking about something,” you admit.
“I hope it’s about stealing more of your furniture. A tv and a mattress do not a home make Doll,” Dabi smirks, extending the apple to you in a subtle offer. You shake your head no and he shrugs it off, bringing it back to his own lips to take a bite.
“I’m serious Dabi.”
“Never a good sign.”
“Your family is holding a vigil for Endeavor a few hours from now and I think you should go.”
Immediately Dabi scowls and makes to sit up but your hand tightens in his hair. He could make you release him if he really wanted but he instead rolls his eyes and stays put. As soon as you’re sure he won’t move you loosen your grip and instead stroke through the dark locks. Looking down you can see his white roots starting to show through and it feels oddly fitting somehow.
“Why the fuck would I do that?” he scoffs.
“Because you deserve closure?”
He rolls his eyes again even harder but you persist.
“I’m serious! You trust me right?” you ask.
The two of you make eye contact as he looks up at you and although he doesn’t answer verbally, you can see his begrudging yes in his eyes.
“I’m not saying you have to go hold hands and sing kumbaya with your family. They don’t even have to know you’re there. Just go to the gravestone and like, process that he’s really gone.”
“I’m well aware the bastard is gone. I don’t need to go to some vigil to know that.”
“Then you’ve got nothing to lose. Just show up and if it does nothing for you then you can leave immediately and rub it in my face that I was wrong.”
The two of you have a silent stare off for a while, neither willing to back down. You know you’re right and, whether he believes it or not, you have a point that even if you’re wrong about him needing to go he has nothing to lose by going.
“I’ll think about it,” he finally concedes and it brings a fond smile to your face.
“That’s all I ask.”
Dabi spends the next few hours agitated but you leave him to his thoughts. Your job was done as soon as you planted the seed, the actual decision of whether to go or not has to be his. You’re hopeful though and if you’re being honest it’s touching that he’s taking your suggestion so seriously. It’s clear that if not for you he wouldn’t even consider it, but he is, and considering it very seriously at that. You choose not to go into the studio like you usually do, instead working on sketches for your other commissions now that you’re almost done with everything for Shouto. It lets you stick around in case he needs you. Around hour 3 you make tea for yourself but set another full mug beside you in case he wants it. He stops pacing for a moment, eyeing the cup for a while before giving in and moving to join you. He takes the mug and sits quietly beside you, staring at the opposite wall with a pensive scowl on his face as it slowly cools.
“If I go, what will you do?” he finally asks, eyes still trained on the wall. It’s the first time either of you have broken the silence in the apartment since you first told him about the vigil.
“I’ll go to my studio to work. You’re more than welcome to join me there when you’re done,” you explain.
He nods.
One moment passes.
Then another.
Then he suddenly rises with a sigh.
“I’m just going to prove your dumbass theory wrong,” he huffs but it brings a small smile to your face anyway.
“Can’t wait for you to hang it over my head forever. Let me grab my stuff and we’ll head out together,” you tell him, rising to do just that.
Within a few minutes you’re both stood outside the apartment. He’s got a black hoodie on again, hood pulled up so he’s more inconspicuous. The sun is starting to set, casting red and golden light across everything as he turns to look at you, eyes scanning you up and down for a moment as if considering something.
“You have all your shit right?” he finally asks.
“You know I used to go to my studio alone all the time right? You coming with is a new addition,” you tease.
He rolls his eyes at you but some of the tension in his shoulders seems to ease anyway.
“Whatever. Try not to do any stupid shit while I’m gone Doll.”
“Same to you. I’ll see you later tonight.”
On that final note you both start to walk towards your respective destinations. You can’t help but worry a little about him. As insistent as he is that he’ll have no reaction to the vigil, you still remember his initial reaction to the news of his father’s death. You look back over your shoulder only to find that he’s done the same. It’s funny how protective you both have gotten. He gives you a nod as if in confirmation that he’ll be just fine and you give him a smile back to assure him you’ll be the same.
You walk away trying not to think about a once beautiful bedroom destroyed and a lone figure hunched in the rain right outside it.
A/N: It is genuinely embarrassing how long I agonized over what to title this part

I have to talk about this outrageous take that I've seen unfortunately pop up across platforms - i.e. that somehow it was Shoto's decision that Endeavor fought AFO instead of going to help Touya together like they promised. It leads to outlandish statements like Endeavor losing an arm in the fight against AFO is a sacrifice / atonement he made for Shoto.
So I'd like to invite everyone to review the events - and look not just at the dialogue presented, but the context clues and facial expressions to understand what truly happened and not fall for this narrative
Post-Dabi reveal
Yes, you have to go back a 100 chapters to Shouto thinking it's up to him to face Touya - mind you not because he wants to, but because he thinks Endeavor can't / won't.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Enter Rei who tells Shouto he's wrong, that what Touya truly NEEDS only Endeavor can give him - which leads to Shouto offering a hand to his dad. They'll do it together (implication: Shouto will fight / defend while Endeavor tries to talk to Touya).
2. Dark Deku arc
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So now we are in the month when Deku is running around trying to find AFO / Shigaraki, while Shoto is trying hold Endeavor accountable to their promise (and Endeavor interpreting it as a personal support). Let's also remember that Touya was out in the open during this period - running to Toga's old house. He wasn't impossible to find with a little effort.
Endeavor was clearly paralyzed with indecision, while Shouto worked on a new move he made specifically for Touya.
Tumblr media
3. The battle planning
The battle was planned by Hawks, All Might and Aizawa. Endeavor seemingly didn't participate. I think it was by choice. As still nominal No 1, as part of the Top 3, if he wanted he could have gone and insisted that the plan accommodates for him to face his son. But he chose not to choose, he chose to leave the decision to Hawks, who didn't understand that Endeavor's role was not to fight in that confrontation, and prioritized Endeavor over the promise the family made.
Tumblr media
Shoto - a mere student tucked away in UA - had no input into the plan. His opinion was not asked.
4. The eve of the battle
When they receive the assignments on the eve of the battle, Shouto's face is clearly disappointed. And yes, he did receive a call from Endeavor then, but that was once more Endeavor trying to push his choice over to someone else - this time Shouto.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He gave Shouto a non-realistic option to throw a tantrum about him breaking his promise, when it crystal clear that it was too late to change things and Shouto would never inconvenience his friends over family matters. This phone call was not about Shouto deciding on the battle plan, but accepting a bad situation, trying to graciously reassure Endeavor and prioritizing everyone else.
5. Hint: Shouto is not fine
He keeps saying how he wanted this and how he's fine - but to his friends it's crystal clear that he's not fine. He's trying to reassure them, he's trying to rationalize it while his father had to let him down. But you can see on his face that this is not his choice. He hates inconveniencing others, making them worried, making his family problem be their problem.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
6. Shouto's true feelings on the matter
Shouto reveals his true feelings about this to Touya. He's doing what he thinks he's right. But he's also criticizing Endeavor for running away from it, for waiting until there was no time to come up with something else. Shouto knows he's not whom Touya wants, but he's here anyways.
Tumblr media
7. Endeavor prioritized his hero work and it led to disastrous consequences
There are also the voices to say that only Endeavor could face AFO. But this was not the case. Endeavor couldn't focus on the fight, he lost his cool, had to be bailed out by Hawks, Jirou, Tokoyami. They broke AFO's helmet that was the biggest obstacle.
And when Endeavor beat AFO, he just returned to a more powerful form anyway, which still was handled by a line of "extras", like Hawks, Shiketsu kids or Mineta, not to mention quirkless All Might...
Endeavor was not "essential" to that fight, unlike what Hawks thought.
And him not going to Touya meant that his son was burnt much more badly by the time they met. If Endeavor went with Shouto, they maybe could have been done in 5 minutes with Touya not spiralling with more rage and then both Endeavor and Shouto could have gone to help in other places. Touya's escalation is because Endeavor ignored him again.
But in the end, what did Endeavor achieve? He didn't stop AFO, he couldn't stop Touya, and still had to face him under worse circumstances. In my view, the narrative is not telling us he's making good, noble choices, but that he keeps running away to play hero until the every end.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think the narrative tells us that it shouldn't be Shouto's job to fix and be the sacrificial lamb in Endeavor's place:
Tumblr media
And I think Hori's choice to line up the family at the back of Vol 39 shows that Endeavor still owes them to step up as father, to do right by Touya, to make a choice that puts the family first and not his hero career and most importantly releases Shouto from the burden he's been carrying for him.

todofam au where they all get to fall into a lovely morally gray zone, like...
touya todoroki dies at 13 in an inferno of his own making, the same year that rei todoroki is sent to a mental hospital for burning her son's face. fuyumi todoroki is now filling her mother's place without her big brother to help, and she is angry is about it.
fuyumi todoroki is 18, and she understands that she's going to help kids in situations worse than her own. she decides she'll be a teacher and stay in her family home, because she's the last one standing between her father and her baby brother. nevermind natsuo, he ignores them all, doesn't he? she is angry, and she pretends that she wants a happy family, because guilt does strange things to a warped man's mind.
natsuo todoroki is 18, and he moves out on his birthday. found an apartment in a different city within his budget - didn't pack much because he wasn't allowed to have much. he feels bad to leave shouto, but there's never anything he could do for the kid, anyway. touya hated shouto, endeavor thinks of the kid as his masterpiece. it means he gets to slink away, pretend it never happened.
shouto todoroki is 15. he goes to u.a. high school and his left side is a monster to him, a mirror he doesn't want. he's got friends now that say it's his power, but it wasn't, not really. it's his father's, it's his brother's, it's the reason his mother could never stay. so he thinks, at least. he's going to be a hero for the right reasons, but the right reasons can mean so many things. he is 15 when he first meets dabi.
he is 16 when dabi saves him, and he doesn't understand why. they're in the middle of battle, another villain attack, and suddenly he's bleeding badly and getting light-headed, and all he sees is the shocked look in dabi's eyes. i may despise you, but i'm the only one allowed to hurt you.
he wakes up delirious on pain meds, but he's conscious enough to recognize he's in a stranger's apartment. imagine shouto's shock when all he can hear through the walls are the a-list villain dabi arguing with natsuo todoroki. imagine his surprise when he realizes all the med equipment keeping him alive is stolen.
he doesn't see dabi for another month after that, until after natsuo drives him back to u.a. and disappears off the map again, without so much as saying a word.
when he does see dabi, it's because his sister pulls him to the side, yanks his arm and pulls him into an empty room when the pounding footsteps of their father leave earshot. i know you're angry, i know how much he's - we've hurt you. you're more than the sum of your parts, she says, and shouto believes her, but it doesn't stop the adrenaline that shoots through his body when she hands him a framed picture of touya, the brother he never knew, and the villain who saved him saunters into the room.
there's malice in his eyes and shouto understands. he's angry, too. he's angry at touya for leaving, he's angry at touya for the few memories he has of him, being pushed around because father was happy with him and touya didn't like that. touya hated him, and shouto knows that.
when dabi offers shouto to join him, the answer should be obvious. it's no, right? shouto doesn't want the kind of revenge that touya wants. he doesn't want to kill the old man, but he doesn't object if someone did.
but he sees fuyumi, and he thinks. heroes don't care about the victims, they care about the flashy fights. if you aren't flashy, you aren't worth it, they've proved that time and time again. so how many kids fall through the cracks? how many people like endeavor are out there? like touya himself?
shouto accepts the offer, and he isn't at all surprised when fuyumi gives him her support. the quiet kind, where she won't say it, but he wonders if she's got blood on her hands, too.
he has a week to say good-bye, and at 16, shouto todoroki drops out of u.a., and if you ask fuyumi or natsuo todoroki, they don't know a damn thing.

A Controversial Take
So I’ve noticed something recently with this Hawks and Endeavor controversy going on.
A lot of the time, most of the time actually, people will add in that they don’t like Endeavor either, and obviously if that’s your feelings then that’s perfectly fine, but I also kinda feel like people put it out there as to sort of defend themselves, if that makes sense?
Like, I feel like people believe if they don’t outright say they don’t like Endeavor but are defending him for x, y, z reasons, they’ll be attacked, ya know?
And I think that’s utter fucking bullshit.
I like Endeavor. I like him a lot, actually. I think his character is incredibly compelling and his story is very real and interesting, and I want to know a lot more about him. I want to see what Horikoshi has in store for him, and how his redemption will play out, and I’m on the side of hoping that he gradually gets redeemed. I don’t expect it to happen quickly, but I want it to happen.
We’ve been shown what his family thinks, THE ONLY REAL OPINIONS THAT MATTER WHEN IT COMES TO HIM, and I want to know if they’ll continue to move in the direction of forgiveness. ESPECIALLY Natsuo, who has just discovered his brother is alive after thinking Endeavor killed him. I am wondering if that new information will make him see Endeavor a little differently now, and possibly begin thinking of forgiving him in the future.
Endeavor’s crimes are not unforgivable. They are horrendous, and cruel, and inexcusable, but not unforgivable. And IT IS ONLY THE VICTIMS THAT HAVE SAY OVER WHETHER HE GETS FORGIVENESS OR NOT.
Shouto, Fuyumi, Natsuo, and Dabi.
They’re the only ones whose thoughts and feelings matter when it comes to Endeavor’s redemption and his road to atonement. No one else, and Dabi doesn’t even really count because he chose his path. He decided that Endeavor is a monster and deserves to rot, and that’s his decision as a victim and that’s valid.
But the rest still have to make theirs, and I think they’re going to side with Endeavor. I think they’re going to believe in the man he started changing into, the man who was willing to step away from his family to secure them a happy life, so they could have their mother again without fear or stress of his presence.
We’ve already seen that Fuyumi wants this. She wants Endeavor back in her life. She has started to forgive him and is ready to let him in. As a victim, that is valid.
Then there is Shouto, who has been on the path to forgiving him for a long time now, and I think he’s kind of gotten a push with this entire Dabi situation. I think he’s going to be more in Endeavor’s corner than ever because of all of this. He’s going to want people to believe in the man he had been seeing in the last months, because he had been witnessing front and center how his father had been changing for the better. As a victim, that is valid.
Then there is Natsuo, who we last saw to refuse forgiving Endeavor at all. Which is totally fine. That’s how he wants to handle this as a victim, and that’s valid in every way. But I think he’s going to change. I think he’s going to start on the path to forgiveness as well, and he’s going to face Endeavor more openly now.
I think I went kind of off topic here, but my point is that I like Endeavor. I like him as a character and I like what he brings to My Hero as a whole. I love how Horikoshi has shown us a sort of leveling when it comes to victims who deal with abuse and how they handle it.
You have Fuyumi, who has begun to move on and wants Endeavor back, you have Shouto who is on the road to forgiveness and is almost there, you have Natsuo who doesn’t want to give forgiveness, and you have Dabi who would rather see his abuser dead.
They’re all valid victims, they’re all valid in what they’re doing in relation to their abuser (aside from maybe Dabi because he’s just killing people to kill people at this point), and they’re all handling themselves differently in terms of moving on. I think it’s brilliant, and I can’t wait to see where Horikoshi takes this part of the story.

BNHA 325 - CLOSE TO THE END OF THE WAR'S AFTERMATH ARC
This is, I hope, one of the last chapters of the War Aftermath arc, or Villain Hunting arc.
I hope it is not because I didn't like it, I honestly did: it showed many important things, like the feelings of unease, mistrust and rejection coming from the civilians, fueled by reasonable fear, but that can become exaggerated at times and push heroes to leave, worsening the situation and making the work difficult for the heroes that are left... Midoriya is also another example of how the civilians, while afraid themselves, are being too paranoid and not understanding enough towards a boy that chose to forsake everything, even his own mental health, just to keep people safe. They also finally come to terms that hero worship isn't the best thing to do, in times of peace AND war, because hero-worship is also considering the heroes to be so invincible that they cannot fall down and have difficulty in rising back up... They finally realize this thanks to Uraraka's valiant speech and the proof of it standing in front of them as a crouching, crying, tired Midoriya.
I loved the Shouto and Endeavor panels in this arc: Endeavor was trying to do his best with tracking All For One down alongside other heroes and Midoriya, and he was also trying to counter the diminishing number of active heroes and explosion of criminality... Shouto, however, is righteously angry that Endeavor didn't let him join the search for villains, when he himself promised they would have stopped Dabi together, all while making an exception for Midoriya. Endeavor in the end seemed to acknowledge that the students, and his son, could handle being out in the field after the war and help Midoriya better, which is as someone pointed out a "passing the torch" moment of sorts: he gives them his phone with the GPS and lets them convince Midoriya on their own, reassuring his colleagues that they won't be a nuisance. Also, the panels showing Shouto's face are as always important and deliver his emotions well: his face during Bakugo's apology was kind of nostalgic and understanding, and, during the different speeches used by the heroes and Uraraka to calm the civilians down and let Izuku return to UA, we can see him almost shake in anger because his best friend is being attacked and he is far away with his father and Hawks, that are later ushered in by Ectoplasm. His face brightens with relief when Uraraka makes her move. In 325 he reminds his father, again,, that they have to stop Dabi, Touya-nii, together, and Endeavor finally agrees.
I just really love all the Todofam, and respect Endeavor's attempts at being better, even though his past behavior was awful; Natsuo and Shoto have all the right to, respectively, despise him to the moon and back and stay on the fence in regards to his redemption arc. I really think Endeavor will have an important role in stopping Touya, while Shoto will be the one that truly saves him.
(THE PARAGRAPH ABOVE WAS ADDED LATER)
My favorite moment after the Uraraka speech is the civilians handing out umbrellas to the students. It signifies that they are recognizing the efforts made, and they realize that the heroes, expecially Midoriya, need a moment to catch their breath and get back up.
Bakugo's apology... was top-tier. Absolutely top-tier, and secured his place as my number 2 favorite character (Midoriya is at the first place). I cried when he said those things to Midoriya, and I hope they can have another talk like this in a calmer environment where Midoriya acknowledges his apopolgy or simply talks about his feelings with Bakugou. I cannot stress it enough, Bakugou's character development is incredible.
We've also seen Stain follow All Might and probably even Midoriya during the arc, and I honestly don't know how to interpret All Might's panel in 325. Did he speak with Stain? If he did, what did they talk about? Did Stain warn him about something, give him an omen, so All Might is worried? Why show us Stain close to All Might in the previous chapters if it didn't bring them together for a talk? Is Stain still a zealot of his own philosophy, or is he starting to see the problems that lie in it? Will he work with the heroes, even if not-so willing?
We also finally understand Aizawa's situation, and it isn't nice: Aizawa has lost an eye, a leg, another friend; his other friend is being interrogated and they are trying to bring him back from his state as Kurogiri, that only came to be because Shirakumo's body was desecrated or stolen, and he... Well, Aizawa wants revenge. He isn't in a good place right now, the most he feels is probably anger at himself and the villains, and he's still reluctant to get back in the game with his prosthetic. Some of his anger is obscured by his pride in Iida and the other students for getting Midoriya back, luckily. Let's hope he starts being less hard on himself and the villains soon, although I honestly won't blame him for how he's feeling.
All Might's been feeling badly in the recent chapter, it's easy to imagine: Midoriya has pushed himself so much and gone over his limits, hurting himself in the process, because of the responsibility felt from bearing OFA. I hope he talks with Midoriya soon and that they hug again.
This arc was very good, and I actually liked the slower pacing. It's not the best way it could have been delivered because of how slow it was, but I liked it nevertheless.
EDIT: Alongside the paragraph explaining how I feel towards the Todofam, I'm adding this: thanks for all the likes. I'm rather new to Tumblr, and I hope I can bring interesting metas or opinions to the fandom of BNHA. As always you are free to disagree with them.

Why do you think Endeavor looks so somber after Uraraka's speech in chapter 325? aside from Dabi problem of course, is he barely realizing now that his definition of heroes and people living seperate world's was wrong? Would like your interpretation
Hey there! Thanks for waiting. I was in the middle of writing up a meta when you sent me this ask, so yay for telepathy!
Endeavor sure looks down and out and miserable and unsure these last few chapters, huh? Basically, I think he's is accepting defeat, in a way. Giving up. He’s realizing that his brand of heroism isn’t the answer, and that he failed. I think what we’re seeing is a remorseful Endeavor who is kind of still running away but realizing there's nowhere to run to anymore. He's been proven wrong about everything, like you said. It's dawning on him that heroes and civilians live in the same world. He pushed his family away for nothing. All of this was for nothing.
AND on top of that, it's ironic because by creating this divide in his family when he told them Shouto belongs in a different world than his siblings, Endeavor made it so that he and Shouto can't rejoice amongst the UA kids and civilians, like I stated here. Now he and Shouto literally do belong in a different world because they have a personal tie to a villain and it's up to them to stop Touya specifically. Endeavor created his own problems and society's problems.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Let me explain. Endeavor is someone who thought being a hero meant having the highest incident resolution count WHILE being ranked #1. Someone who was the strongest. Someone who always caught the bad guys. He’s not used to NOT winning against villains. He’s used to being the hero who could defeat anyone (except All Might, hah) and now suddenly he’s in this weird position where the public hates him more than ever and nothing he’s doing as a hero is WORKING. He never imagined he'd be considered an actual villain, and now he is exactly that in the public's eye. It probably stings and is uncomfortable to sit with because the public is unknowingly echoing his own son's words, who he has hurt deeply:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Endeavor has caused so much pain and the reality of it is sinking in, festering, and weighing him down. The past is indeed catching up to him. For the past 10+ years, his family has suffered while he had the privilege of not carrying around pain because he, as the abuser, was the one inflicting it. Dabi is a physical manifestation of Endeavor’s abuse of his family. Endeavor has a reminder of his atrocities in his villainous son; he has so much regret now that he's confronted with what he did to Touya, and that makes sense for his arc.
Tumblr media
Oddly enough, this somber Endeavor is exactly what the Todoroki family needs to move forward because they won't be able to come together unless he has remorse, which truly clicked for him after he watched Dabi’s reveal tape. Endeavor feeling regret highlights that his mindset and heart have changed from the time when all he ever wanted was to use his family as tools to get what he wanted. This current Endeavor is different than the Endeavor from the last decade:
Tumblr media
This brings me to the crumb of Touya in 325. I feel like Endeavor hiding his face in his hat is an indication that he’s still running away because of intense guilt. He’s not ready to face his son who he killed (because Endeavor does think he killed Touya) but knows it’ll have to happen, and he’s uncertain. He probably isn’t confident he can face Touya as a father. I mean, look at how attempts have gone over with his other 3 kids. It seems like Endeavor isn’t sure he can approach things as a hero anymore, which is good because the Todoroki family doesn't need a hero. They need their father to put them first. He's at the cusp of realizing that he has no choice but to stop running away and be a father, but like Fuyumi told Natsuo in chapter 189, Endeavor finds it hard to give up when it comes to being a hero (probably because that's been his only identity).
Tumblr media
But luckily for the family, once he fully lets go of being a hero, he can be a father, since the narrative has established he can't be both at the same time.

BNHA 301 - Todoroki Family Melodrama
Okay! So! We’ve learned so many more pieces to the puzzle!
What people have failed to realize is that we’ve only had Shoto’s narrative of the story up until recently. (Like until 'Dabi revealed himself’ recently).
Then we saw it from Dabi’s point of view, which “confirmed” people’s view of Enji. But now that we’re getting Rei and Enji’s point of view, people are saying things like it’s been “retcon” or such when that is not the case AT ALL. It’s all just a matter of perspective.
Shoto, being the baby of the family, had likely seen when shit absolutely fell apart already and took the brunt of it and blamed Endeavor for everything going wrong (which is fair). Then we had Dabi’s point of view that painted Enji as the damn devil himself. Ya still with me? Cool, cool.
However, we can finally see things from Rei and Enji’s perspective.
One thing I always wonder about was why Enji hated All Might so much. Why did he see himself as a failure to All Might? I mean, shouldn’t he be grateful and happy too that All Might brought upon this new era of peace? Something just wasn’t adding up for me and I continued to feel confused even as I read this newest chapter. It was as if he was obsessed with All Might, like his self worth was tied to this man. Hell, he WAS obsessed with All Might. He had such an intense hyper-fixation on someone that was never resolved nor questioned because he always pumped out good results and therefore it went overlooked.
When I saw his eyes when he met Rei:
Tumblr media
I saw a man that was definitely somewhere else mentally. Not in love nor smug. Neither malicious or angry but...his mind is so focused on something that everything else he sees comes second. It is both overwhelming and fascinating. But through these eyes, he saw Rei. A woman that he describes as “...like ice. Strong, yet-... if I touched her she might have melted away...” which is synonymous for saying “strong yet delicate”. Which means he never saw her as someone lessor then him or something to control. Rei came into this marriage despite knowing it was one for Quirks because she had her own sense of duty to her family (for whatever reason that is).
Now moving onto his relationship with Rei: He was really fucking awkward. You can tell this man has never had a date in his life and if he wasn’t so fixated on All Might, he probably would never have had a spouse.
Yet we can see in his eyes and expression that he hasn’t yet become the man we saw in the Sports Festival Arc. He quickly notices something as small as her favorite flower.
When they realized Touya would injure himself trying to use his Quirk, it makes sense that he would immediately stop any thoughts of training for Touya. First off, that is like, literal torture being destroyed by your own Quirk (his own drawback is severely overheating himself if he pushes Hellflame too hard so the thought Touya not even having a tolerance for his own even hotter flames is just fucking wow). Secondly, he can’t train something that is doomed to fail from the start (sorry Dabs). But he already instilled that fire into Touya so it was like a major kick to the ass, hence his face in this scene:
Tumblr media
As well as Touya’s stubbornness in this scene:
Tumblr media
So Enji just. Stopped. He grew frustrated. He grew frustrated as he continue to have All Might surpass him, mocking him. But he didn’t push Rei nor the kids. We saw she had Fuyumi of her own accord.
Tumblr media
But no matter how many times Enji discouraged Touya to stop overusing his Quirk, he persisted. He didn’t want to stop. He didn’t want to be “defective” because if he was, then he couldn’t be a Hero and how could Endeavor, Number 2 Pro, not have a blood that can follow in his footsteps?
Because of his tenacity, his parents constantly found him with new injuries. It seems the only way they could think of to get him to stop was to crush the idea that he could be a Hero, let alone surpass All Might.
Tumblr media
For some reason, Rei’s expression in this scene confused me:
Tumblr media
It’s kind of like an “oh shit” expression and I couldn’t figure out why. Before it could be explained, it was shown that she had Natsuo-- another Ice Baby. We started to see the look in Enji’s eyes change. All Might continued to rein supreme yet Enji refused to train any of them. He grew even more frustrated and restless as time continued, it almost seemed like he felt cornered in a way. I imagine Rei was upset too because she couldn’t do the one thing she was supposed to in a Quirk marriage (she kept making ‘subpar’ babies). Then don’t even get me started on Touya--once he saw they were having more children, it clicked to him that he really wasn’t going to be trained by his father anymore. That he wasn’t going to be considered strong enough to ever surpass All Might and fulfill his father’s wishes.
Then it all changed when the fire nation attacked Rei had Shouto--
Tumblr media
--who just so happened to be a perfect blend of the two. What joy. What luck. As y'all can see below, they all have a variety of expressions. Enji and Touya are pretty self-explanatory but Rei is the one that got me the most.
She’s fucking relieved.
Tumblr media
Once I realized that, I sat in my chair stupefied. Did she...did she pump out babies so Touya wouldn’t have to be put under the spotlight anymore? Did she really do that? Did she work to make another fire baby so that Touya could finally settle down? Holy shit.
Yeah, she totally did. Because finally, Enji happened to get what he wanted (a strong baby) and now Touya wouldn’t have to be under so much duress right?
WRONG.
Seeing Enji switch his focus onto Shouto, crushed Touya. It cemented in the fact that he was a “failure” in his mind. He’s strong but he’s not. He’s weak but he’s not. Touya was an oxymoron decked out in a pretty cover. That’s why he pushed himself so hard-- to prove that he was be strong despite his drawback. He could ignore it. He could ignore the pain, he didn’t care about the pain so long as Enji didn’t give up on him.
But Enji talking to him again and again, about stopping his pursuit of becoming a Hero and exposing his failures, telling him to quit now before he really hurts himself is so unbelievably upsetting to Touya. His dad doesn’t see him as a prodigy anymore, as worth it anymore. As potential anymore. Why?
Because of Shouto.
It was all because of fucking Shouto. He was the reason dad didn’t look at him. Didn’t see him. It was Shouto’s fault and he hated him. Shouto, barely able to sit up on his own, was already proven to be so much stronger than him because he came right. He didn’t have any drastic drawbacks. He could carry out dad’s wishes and be a Hero, be better and surpass All Might.
Hence his anger and resentment towards Shouto in this scene:

Not gonna lie, while I sitting through all this, I was dead ass wondering where the fuck was Rei. Why did she leave this volatile child in the awkward and emotionally stunted hands of Enji??? Why did she trust him to discourage his behavior? Where was she to soothe his worries with her maternal powers? WHERE WAS SHE?
Then it all made sense to me here:

And I’ve never had a fatter “ OOOOOOHHHHH” moment then I did right there. Suddenly a lot of things made so much more fucking sense.
But that’s just my two-cents since reading the chapter and I could be completely off but I finally have enough of a grasp to see what’s wrong with this god forsaken family.
