29: Playing in the snow || Destroyer!Chris x
Summary: Chris is home and it snowed overnight
Warnings: None!
Authors Notes: This is for @the-ss-horniest-book-club’s home for the challenge ❤️ I’m almost there guys 😭
Tumblr media
“Chris!!!!!” You screamed at the top of your lungs. Chris comes barrelling down the stairs with one sock hanging off his foot. His defences on high alert ready to tackle the problem. He’s not sure what he’s expecting - maybe a burglar, an enemy from his past maybe. But what he’s greeted with instead is you jumping and down staring out of the window.
“Baby?” Chris’s voice is still deep from the sleep he just woke up from. He walks behind you and sees the yard covered in the deep white blanket of snow.
“Let’s go and play in it!!” You squeal. Chris laughs and shakes his head in disbelief.
“How old are you y/n?” Chris says still laughing.
“We’re never too old to play in the snow!” You pull him outside, not even caring that he doesn’t have this shoes on.

"Do you have a big house? Do you have a dog? What about all my clothes and toys at the other house I was at? When can Lucy come stay with us? Can we get ice cream?"
Lily asked a million questions as she sat in her booster seat in the back of Chris' truck. The newly appointed guardian just chuckled and tried his best to answer each one. He had a decent sized house, not very big but not small either. He didn't have a dog. He had arranged for the Michaels to bring all of Lily's things to her later that night. They would pick Lucy up in the morning and ice cream sounded like a perfect treat to celebrate.
Little did Chris know that the sheriff had put in a call to the judge, his uncle, on behalf of Chris. The man never doubted Chris' ability to take on the girls, but he knew all too well how the justice system worked so he put in a good word and a bit of encouragement to the judge. Now Chris had a very excited little girl kicking her legs against the seat of the truck as he drove off.
Sure, he was thrilled to have been given custody of both girls but he was also nervous about the way his life was now changed. This wasn't a job anymore, he couldn't just give advice to a kid and leave them at the end of the day. No, he was now essentially a parent and responsible for raising two girls who needed more than just a home. Lily had speech therapy and the judge had ordered that in exchange for Lucy's early release she attend counseling and anger management classes, much to the teenager's disgruntlement. On top of that there was homework, dentist appointments, outbursts, tantrums, and healing to do. Chris was already getting overwhelmed just thinking about it all.
"Hey Chris?" Lily asked
"Yeah?" He peered at her in the rearview mirror
"What's custody mean?"
"Well" Chris scratched his beard, trying to think of the best way to explain to a five year old "It means that you and your sister get to live with me and I take care of you."
"We can live with you forever?"
"Well, not forever. You're going to be grown up one day and have your own house."
"Are you our dad now?" Lily asked
"Something like that."
"Yay!"
Chris smiled as he pulled into the Dairy Queen parking lot.
---
"Hey Lucy!" Julie said as she sat down at the table Lucy sat at in the common room "You've had a busy week, I heard."
"Yeah seems so"
"Here, I got you something." Julie slid a can of soda across the table with a smile "Congrats on your placement, kiddo."
"Thanks" Lucy returned a small smile and took the soda, popping the tab and taking a sip "Tomorrow can't come fast enough."
"I know you're excited."
"I wouldn't say excited, but I'm ready to be out of here."
"Are you going to a foster home?"
"No, just some guys place."
"Some guy?" Julie raised an eyebrow
"Oh.." Lucy laughed slightly at the confusion "He's a good guy, a cop. He got custody of my sister and I."
"Is it the man that visits you?"
"That's the one."
"He seems really nice."
"He's okay."
Julie nodded, knowing that she wouldn't get much more out of Lucy about her feelings on the situation. They played a game of Uno before it was dinner time and then Lucy began to go through the trunk of personal items she was allowed to have. She was given a black garbage bag to put her things in and she rummaged through everything, placing item by item inside until she got to the remains of Mr Snow. She felt anger and sadness boil inside her and she slammed the trunk closed. She returned the extra pairs of center issued sweats and tshirts then turned in for the night. Sleep evaded her, her mind wandering through all the possibilities of what living with Chris would be like.
The next morning Chris and Lily stood just outside the gates, waiting for Lucy to be released. Lily grew impatient and tugged on Chris' hand.
"When is her coming? I can't see!"
"Calm down, I got you." Chris laughed and lifted Lily onto his shoulders "That better?"
"Yeah! Now where's my sissy!"
"Patience, little one" Chris shook his head and Lily crossed her arms over top of it and rested her chin and sighed
It wasn't long before the gate buzzed and Lucy walked out of the door.
"There she is! Lemme down lemme down!"
Chris put Lily on the ground and watched as the two sisters ran toward each other. Lucy dropped to her knees and gathered Lily into her arms, hugging her tight.
"I missed you I missed you I missed you!" Lily cried as she clung to her sister
"I missed you too, Punk."
Lucy picked Lily up and grabbed the black trash bag before walking over to Chris.
"Hey, Luc-"
Chris was cut short when Lucy trusted the bag at his chest and walked past him to the parking lot.
"Hey Chris, it's great to see you, thanks for springing me from jail. I owe you one" Chris muttered mockingly under his breath as he followed the girls
Once inside the truck Chris thought he'd try again.
"Lucy, you hungry?"
"Nah, prison slop fills me right up."
"I thought we'd go to the buffet but if you're full…" Chris smirked
"What's a buffet?" both girls asked at the same time and he looked at both of them with raised eyebrows
"Oh you poor things."
Chris drove them into town and stopped at the restaurant. Upon paying, Chris handed the girls their plates and pointed to the buffet lines.
"Go crazy. It's all you can eat, just don't make yourselves sick and puke in my truck."
Lucy looked around, a little perplexed as she made her way down the line. Everything looked so good and her poor stomach growled with hunger. She began loading her plate up with everything she could fit.
"OH. MY. GOSH." Lily squealed and she grabbed Chris' hand, pulling him to the dessert line "WHAT IS THAT?!"
"Shhh." Chris scooped Lily into his arms so that she could get a better view and ignored the looks some customers were giving the loud girl "Inside voice okay? That's a chocolate fountain."
"I want it I want it I want it!" Lily whispered excitedly
Chris laughed and grabbed a skewer then a piece of strawberry. He helped Lily dip it into the running chocolate and watched her happily eat it as they walked around picking what to put on her plate.
---
"So, what did you girls think of the restaurant?" Chris asked as they all got back into the truck
"I want to go there every day!" Lily exclaimed
"My stomach hurts." Lucy grumbled
"I told you not to over do it." Chris smiled as he pulled out of the parking lot "And we can't go every day, Sweetheart, but we can go back again soon."
Lily seemed satisfied with that deal. The ride home was quiet, with just the radio playing softly. Chris didn't want to push Lucy to talk to him, and Lily was busy looking out the window as they made their way to their new home. Once they arrived, Chris helped Lily out of the truck and headed toward the door. Lucy got out of the truck and stood for a minute, looking at the structure before her. It was a simple ranch house, with a fence around the small yard, and a view of the mountains in the back. Lucy grabbed her bag and made her way through the front door.
"Welcome home" Chris said softly as she entered the small foyer
It didn't feel like home to her but she didn't want to tell Chris that. She just gave him a nod and walked past him and into the living room. A beige couch lined the back wall and there was a TV on an entertainment center with not much else in the room.
"Would you like a tour?"
"I think I can figure it out." Lucy replied a bit more bitterly than she had intended
"Okay...if you need anything just let me know. I'll let you get settled but I want to talk later."
"Great." Lucy muttered
She left the room and began to look for the bedroom that would be hers. She entered one bedroom and immediately determined that it was Lily's.  A small bed was lined with stuffed animals and there were Barbie posters on the wall. Lucy closed the door and went into the next room. Inside she found a bed with a grey striped comforter, a dresser, a desk, and something that made Lucy stop in her tracks.
"This must be mine." Lucy said aloud as she looked at the white saucer chair.

There was always that one guy. That guy who stood out in a crowd, who might as well have a warning flashing over his head, red lights blinking DANGER DANGER DANGER.
He would be muscular—sometimes lean and sinewy but always hard, usually taller than average, exuding strength and dominance. He wouldn't necessarily be handsome in the most conventional sense, but he would always be attractive and aware of it. He would be casually dressed, rarely suited, but would favour leather and denim, often a combination of the two. He would have either scars or piercings or tattoos, sometimes all, and his demeanour would be cool and distant, but sensual all the same. He would always drink beer or hard liquor, usually nursing his drink longer than average, not risking losing control. His hair would either be too long or too short, always sporting facial hair, even if it was sometimes only a few days stubble. His expression would be superior, sometimes bored, but his eyes would be piercing and attentive and he would ooze sex.
I'd met him many times, I'd loved him and hated him and fought him, sometimes physically, I'd had him for a night or for months, one lasted over a year, but the end result was a given from the go: he wasn't a keeper. As my mom would say. And she was right. I'd never listened to her, but she was right. Hence my current predicament. That guy was always the same, we would laugh and cry and fight and most of all fuck. Dear god, we would fuck.
So when I saw him all the bells went off in my head, don't don't don't. How long he had been watching me I wasn’t sure, I’d not noticed him at first, he was sitting in the corner, his back against the wall, his face in shadow. He was sitting with a small group, 4 guys ranging widely in age, laughing and talking, but he was not taking part in the conversation. He was just scanning the room, taking the occasional sip. He averted my quick glances, but I could feel his eyes on me as I moved around the room, talking, laughing, drinking and dancing.
He was that guy, but something made him different.
After hours of silent vigilance he got up and moved in my direction, and I finally got a good look at him. He was in his mid-thirties, dressed in low slung, dark jeans, a grey tank under a denim west, his arms strong and well defined, a big tattoo on his right upper arm. He had a short undercut, dark blonde if I were to guess in the poor lighting, his chin covered by a trimmed beard, his jaw sharp and accentuated by a light scruff. I couldn't make out the colour of his eyes, it was too dark, but they met mine unflinchingly for the first time all evening as he moved past me, brushing his bare arm against mine, leaving a burning mark from the touch. He glanced back and murmured an apology, but I was sure it wasn't an accident, and I saw a hint of a smirk as he turned away. I stared after him, taking in his butt and back. Damn. He was downright gorgeous, and I could feel a familiar pool soaking my underwear. Shit. Shit. SHIT.
I sat by the bar until he returned, watched him as he got a fresh beer and found a spot leaning against the wall by the exit instead of returning to his seat. He stood there, drinking lazily, making my spine tingle as he followed me when I went over to some friends and sat down, superficially taking part in the conversation while he made it harder and harder to concentrate. I wondered how he would smell, if his chest was as hard as it looked, how his beard would feel against my neck. The longer I sat, the wetter I got, I had to do something, my mother could go fuck herself, I just wanted to fuck him. I scooted down, minimised my movements by conversation, excused myself and got up, my hand clutched by my side.
He kept watching me as I approached, draining his beer and leaving the bottle hanging from between his fingers. I stopped in front of him, meeting his gaze head-on, reached out and put the damp silk in his hand and closed his fist around it. He didn't look down but a flash of realisation crossed his face, shock widening his eyes.
I bored into him for a few beats, let go of his hand and walked off into the hallway.
“Hey.” I kept walking, enjoying the tinge of his stare, knowing he took the opportunity to have a real good look. “Hey, miss.”
I stopped, I could hear his steps come closer, soft on the concrete floor and turned to face him. His gait was smooth and he approached lightly despite his heavy boots, especially for a man of his size.
He stopped three feet away and ran his eyes over me, stopping at my calves, my thighs, my hips, no doubt noticing there was nothing underneath my tight dress, worked his way up my chest, checking out my cleavage, his tongue and teeth massaging his lower lip, a smirk curling his mouth, his full red wet mouth and his eyes were blown when he finally locked into mine.
“I think I have something of yours.” He turned his palm upwards, showing me how he was weaving the fabric between his fingers, his hand slick with my arousal. I stared, enthralled for a moment at the sensuality of it, his hands seemed so delicate and graceful, and I wondered what else he could do with them, how they would feel on me, all over me, in my mouth, in my pussy, tangled into my hair while he fucked me senseless. I caught a small movement to my side where the bulge in his pants really had me hoping he wasn’t carrying. Shit. I hoped my moan wasn’t audible, but when I looked up the smirk was gone, and his eyes had darkened even further.
“Are you leaving?” His voice was thick and gravelly, resonating in my midriff, shooting a surge of blood straight down, smearing the insides of my thighs even further.
I bit down on my lip to stop another involuntary sound from escaping and glanced down at his erection, fighting to stop myself from palming him in the middle of the hall, getting us both through in jail for public indecency.
“No. I have something to take care of first.” I swallowed and he followed my glance to his erection. He waited for half a beat and scanned the corridor, pocketed my panties, grabbed my hand and set off to a bathroom 20 feet further down.
He wrenched the door open, dragged me inside, bolted the door and almost threw me against the far wall, and he was on me with a savage growl. He grabbed my ass, pushed himself into me, letting me feel how hard he was and plunged his tongue into my open mouth, his groans mixing with mine. I camped my hands onto is arms, feeling my way up, his muscles flexing under hot skin as I was clawing up to his shoulders and neck, his short hair bristling as I stroked his head and forced him closer, his clean scent filling my nostrils.
He almost ripped my dress when he pulled it up to my waist and let out a snarl when he hit bare skin, ground into me roughly before he broke the kiss and turned me against the wall, his hand sliding down and covering my mound, his finger stroking my clit on the way down and slid inside me, and my head flew back as I gasped for air.
“Can I fuck you like this?”
“Holy shit, yes.” We were both panting, the words coming out in bursts, and he twisted me towards the counter, two fingers buried deep in me, the back of his hand massaging me, keeping the pressure up, his other arm around my chest, anchoring me to him. I could feel his heart pounding into my back, his mouth open against my neck, grunting into my ear as his hand tugged my dress down and cupped my breast, his thumb flicking my already oversensitive nipple.
“Fuuuck.” He drew his hand back, leaving leaving me empty and aching. I felt a wet trail across my stomach and he ripped his fly open and I could feel his cock against my buttock, jabbing through his boxers until he freed it fully and shoved it between my legs, dipping into my folds and I arched back, revelling in anticipation. “Shit.” He held my neck as he dug through his pocket and emerged with a condom, let me go while he stepped back enough to swiftly pull it on, and nudged my leg with his knee to spread me wider before he positioned himself at my entrance, letting my soaked folds and thighs lubricate the rubber.
“Look.” I opened my eyes and stared into the mirror, my hair a sweaty mess, my dress in complete disarray, my lips as swollen and red as his, his beard glistening and his eyes boring into mine through the reflection, and it was the hottest thing I’d seen. “Keep looking.”
I stared as hypnotised as he clamped my hips and entered me slowly, letting me adjust to the size and tighten around him. I couldn't help my eyes rolling back as he filled me, I was already throbbing, my pussy swelling to welcome him, and I clung onto the edge of the sink, almost whimpering as I pushed back to meet and seated him fully.
“Fuck. Fuck, your cunt is amazing.” His voice was a hoarse whisper, almost drowned out by his heavy breathing, and I met his eyes in the mirror again, his jaw slack and his mouth open, his tongue flicking out, looking on the verge of losing control, and I clenched in response, egging him on, wanting him even deeper. He reached forward again, found my clit and started circling it as he jutted his hips, his arm hoisting me up by my ribs before he pulled back and started thrusting slowly, biting his lip as he watched us connecting. “Fuck. It looks so good, you look so good.”
The words shot through me, forcing out a groan, and I looked down, watched his hand work on me, heard the wet sucking as his fingers spread my folds and applied more pressure to my clit, leaving me nearly hyperventilating. He kept me in agony, his cock hitting every single nerve in my walls, his fingers shooting currents inwards, colliding in a burning, pulsing knot and I curved my back, reached behind to urge him to move faster, harder, I was desperate to come, to get some release, the tension was agony, and I’d never felt that good.
“Please.” I was panting, exhaling in shallow bursts, and he smiled, enjoying the power, enjoying the control, wanting me to beg for more, and I complied willingly. “Please.”
He chuckled, his fingers twitched and circled once before he picked up the pace and started rubbing harder and thrusting faster, his jaw set as he held back, concentrating on my climax before his. His other hand left my hip and closed around my ribs, cupping my breast and pulled me up. I fell back on his shoulder, and he covered my lips with his as he plunged into my mouth. I could feel the heat emerging, hot flashes surging from my centre, radiating through my whole body, my pussy contracting and throbbing violently and my head fell back, a silent scream stuck in my throat.
“That’s it. Scream for me.” I whimpered into his mouth, I couldn’t move and my legs were giving out. He slowly retracted his hand, rubbing my clit lightly and lifted his fingers to my mouth, smearing my cum on my bottom lip, sucked it gently and kissed me, his breath washing over my hot face before he lowered me down, hitched one of my knees in his elbow, held it in place on the counter and bent me forward, supporting me as he pulled back and slammed into me. I fell down on my elbows, my arms struggling with the weight of me as I clung to the sink, and he pounded me faster and faster, lifting me off the floor as he fucked me. I felt myself chasing another orgasm, every thrust bringing me closer, his grunts filling my head, and I tipped over the edge seconds before he arched back, slammed into me one last time and let out a deep rasping groan as he emptied himself over and over inside me, my own contractions milking every last drop out of him. He fell over me, his arms bracing outside mine to stop me from collapsing, and he stayed there while our breathing and pulses returned to something human again. After a few minutes my legs were shaking so hard I thought I would pass out, and he chuckled into my shoulder.
“Shit. I’m sorry. Here.” He pushed himself off, staggered a little, causing a small hiss to escape me as he withdrew. He pulled me up with him, fanning his fingers across my stomach and popped off the condom, throwing it into the trashcan by the door. He tucked his dick back into his boxers and started fixing my dress, tugging it in place, all the while staring at us in the mirror.
“There.” He smoothed down my hair and squeezed my shoulders before he kissed me on the cheek and ran his hands down my arms, resting his forehead on my shoulder before he released me and turned towards the door. “I have to go. Thank you. That was lovely.”
“Likewise.” I kept my tone neutral, surprised at how little I wanted him to leave. Huh. He stared at me for a long time, started to speak, stopped and opened the door, wavered a little before he walked out and left the door to slide shut behind him. Fuck.
I took a long look in the mirror, smoothed my dress one last time and followed him, realising he still had my panties in his pocket. Well fuck. I smiled to myself as I stepped through the door.

Warrior Nuns Through TV History
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
TV nunning is a broad church. Sometimes, it’s all gunfire, demon-dissolving punches and running through walls, as in Netflix’s latest comic book adaptation Warrior Nun. In that show, a mystical artifact gives a non-believing teen superpowers passed down the generations from holy sister to holy sister. Defeat the demons, protect the world, praise the Lord, and so on.
Other fictional TV nuns lead quieter, more cake-focused lives, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t also fighters. You might say that like superheroes, not all warrior nuns wear capes. You’d be wrong – nuns definitely wear capes. They’re called mantles and though roomy and practical, likely represent a significant time commitment with regard to ironing.
Warrior Nun‘s superpowered teen follows in the echoey footsteps of a whole conventful of fictional TV nuns remembered here – some good, some bad, some inordinately fond of biscuits, but all, in their own way, warriors.
Sister Mary Loquacious in Good Omens (2019)
Played by: Nina Sosanya
Allegiance: Satanic nuns of the Chattering Order of St Beryl
Warrior level: Novice
Weapon of choice: Infantilising baby talk of hoofikins and widdle demonic tails
Specialism: Biscuits with pink icing
Most likely to say: ‘Fancy me holding the Antichrist! Counting his little toesy-woesies!’
Getting into heaven? Absolutely not
Demon Crowley and angel Aziraphale may have been Good Omens’ major players, but Sister Mary Loquacious kicked off the whole mess by accidentally confusing the infant Adversary, Destroyer of Kings, Angel of the Bottomless Pit, Prince of this World and Lord of Darkness with the human child of a couple from the Oxfordshire village of Tadfield. Easily done.
Sister Agatha in Dracula (2020)
Played by: Dolly Wells
Allegiance: The Army of the Faithful, St Mary’s Convent of Budapest
Warrior level: Intellectually? Top Tier. She’s Dracula’s ‘every nightmare at once: an educated woman in a crucifix’
Weapon of choice: Wooden stakes and double-barrel wit
Specialism: Scientific rigour and one-liners
Most likely to say: ‘A house of God is it? Well that’s good, we could do with a man about the place, eh sister?’
Getting into heaven? Ja, if she cared to grace it with her presence.
Unfazed, brave, funny and intellectually curious, Dutch-born Agatha put both her faith and folklore to the test when she took on Count Dracula, meticulously gathering research on his powers and learning the rules of the beast to try to use them against him. A true scientist and quite a woman.
Sister Michael in Derry Girls (2018)
Played by: Siobhan McSweeney
Allegiance: Our Lady Immaculate College/Rawhide
Warrior level: Untested in battle but doubtless lethal
Weapon of choice: Apathy, withering sarcasm and eye-rolls
Specialism: Judo (on Fridays)
Most likely to say: ‘Sweet suffering Jehovah’
Getting into heaven? I wouldn’t be the one to stop her.
You won’t find an ounce of sentiment beneath this wimple, Sister Michael’s dry disdain for the pupils at Our Lady Immaculate is expressed only through cutting remarks and declarations of boredom. Not a fan of priests, the French, love songs or… most things, she’s an authority figure for the Derry Girls. Every so often though, like when she turned a blind eye to Erin and co. distributing their banned lesbianism-focused edition of the school magazine, she’ll surprise you.
Sister Jane Ingalls in Orange is the New Black (2013)
Played by: Beth Fowler
Allegiance: Catholicism
Warrior level: Basically nil as she’s a committed pacifist, though she does punch Gloria in the mouth at one point for PR
Weapon of choice: Civil disobedience and the Good Book
Specialism: Activism
Most likely to say: ‘I was afraid nunning was going to be boring!’
Getting into heaven? Sure
As a young novice in the 1960s, Ingalls fell in with the bad nuns and got a taste for non-violent activism. A bunch of protests and a memoir later (full points for the title: Nun Shall Pass), and the church didn’t want anything to do with her, neglecting to cover her legal fees after she handcuffed herself to a nuclear facility, landing her in Litchfield.
Sister Harriet in Hunters (2019)
Played by: Kate Mulvany
Allegiance: Anti-Nazi, Pro-Quip
Warrior level: Top level. A highly capable operative.
Weapon of choice: Gun, blowtorch, you name it
Specialism: Threats of extreme violence delivered in the voice of a Downton Abbey marchioness.
Most likely to say: ‘I will set you aflame, child’
Getting into heaven? There’s some intrigue as to her real deal but she certainly seems to be on the right side of history.
This MI6 agent/Nazi-hunting nun from Amazon Prime’s Hunters is something of a Scary Poppins. She does an excellent line in death threats and action-movie quips. She’s deadly, has a shady backstory, speaks in a cut-glass English accent and is fond of biscuits. In other words: our kind of nun.
Matron Casp in Doctor Who ‘New Earth’ (2006)
Played by: Doña Croll
Allegiance: Sisters of Plenitude
Warrior level: Merciless eugenicist
Weapon of choice: Cat claws and science
Specialism: Incinerating conscious and begging-for-help human cloning experiments without a spark of fellow-feeling.
Most likely to say: ‘Who needs arms when we have claws’
Getting into heaven? Nah. Space prison more like.
The Sisters of Plenitude, healers on New Earth, may have called their work ‘the tender application of science’ but ‘the incredibly painful application of bastard cruelty’ better sums up their human cloning farm. This order takes a lifelong vow to help and mend, but clearly not to do no harm. And their hospital doesn’t even have a shop.
Abbess Hild in The Last Kingdom (2015-)
Played by: Eva Birthistle
Allegiance: Uhtred of Bebbanburg/the Lord
Warrior level: Advanced (but retired)
Weapon of choice: Dagger
Specialism: Throwing buckets of cold water on a sleeping Uhtred and sawing through the necks of dead Danes
Most likely to say: ‘I have killed, and I will kill again I’m sure, but hopefully not today’
Getting into heaven? Big yes.
Hild’s journey in The Last Kingdom took her from nun to warrior and back again. Rescued from attack by Uhtred, Leofric and Yseult, she swore to become a fighter and more-than earned the title. Eventually, her vocation called her back to the church, where she now remains as the Abbess with whom you don’t mess.
Sister Jude in American Horror Story: Asylum
Played by: Jessica Lange
Allegiance: Catholicism and the teachings of Monseigneur Timothy Howard
Warrior level: Complicated
Weapon of choice: Forced commitment to an insane asylum,
Specialism: Guilt
Most likely to say: ‘All monsters are human’
Getting into heaven? Bad things happened under her watch but she does try to atone
The head of Briarcliff, an institution for the criminally insane, Sister Jude is a complex character with a complicated trajectory. She mistreats, but is also also gravely mistreated.
Sister Monica Joan in Call the Midwife (2012-)
Played by: Judy Parfitt
Allegiance: Raymond Nonnatus, patron saint of childbirth
Warrior level: Yoda
Weapon of choice: Forceps and fey literary quotation
Specialism: Sniffing out and emptying hidden cake tins
Most likely to say: ‘My first responsibility is to ensure the consumption of this cake’
Getting into heaven? Hundo P
AKA the best Call The Midwife nun, and an OG resident of Nonnatus House ever since the BBC One series began. Owing to her advanced years and developing dementia, Sister Monica Joan is now retired from midwifery, but in her prime there wasn’t a birth canal in Poplar that hadn’t welcomed her up to the elbow. She’s highly educated and extremely well-read with an instinctive love of beauty, poetry, cake and Doctor Who, which makes her the patron saint of all our hearts.
Sister Sybil in Camelot (2011)
Played by: Sinéad Cusack
Allegiance: Shady but ultimately loyal to Morgan
Warrior level: Witch
Weapon of choice: Dark magicks
Specialism: Child sacrifice?
Getting into heaven? Nah.
When Uther Pendragon banished his daughter Morgan in Chris Chibnall’s 2011 Camelot, she was raised in a nunnery by a sister who was no stranger to the dark arts. When Morgan (played by Eva Green) returned to claim her birthright, Sister Sybil was the one whispering poison in her ear and teaching her how to channel her powers.
Sister Bertrille in The Flying Nun (1967)
Played by: Sally Field
Allegiance: El Convento San Tanco in San Juan
Warrior level: Negligible
Weapon of choice: Not so much a weapon, but her flight-enabling cornette was the big thing.
Specialism: As the title suggests, flight
Most likely to say: ‘When lift plus thrust is greater than load plus drag, anything can fly.’
Getting into heaven? Si señor.
A creation of Tere Ríos’ book The Fifteenth Pelican, Sister Bertrille was the fresh-faced nun-next-door whose cornette combined with the Puerto Rico coastal winds allowed her to fly in the 1960s TV series. According to Sally Field’s excellent memoir In Pieces, the whole experience was more drag than take-off.
Miss Clavel in Madeline (1988-2001)
Voiced by: Judith Orban & various
Allegiance: An old house in Paris/the Catholic church
Warrior level: more sentry than prize fighter
Weapon of choice: Education! (Read: day trips to the circus)
Specialism: Waking up in the middle of the night with a nagging sense that something’s off kilter with her young schoolgirl charges, then singing a song about it.
Most likely to say: ‘Vite, vite mes petits’
Getting into heaven? Mais oui
The headteacher at Madeline’s Parisian boarding school in the Ludwig Bemelmans’ books and their various TV and film adaptations, Miss Clavel is a kindly sort. She gives her young boarding school pupils warm moral instruction and generally manages to extract Madeline from the mouth of whatever tiger she’s crawled inside that week. Not ferocious, as warriors go, but kind and dependable.
Septa Unella in Game of Thrones (2015)
Played by: Hannah Waddingham
Allegiance: The Faith of the Seven
Warrior level: High Bastard
Weapon of choice: Wooden spoon and ignominy
Specialism: Torture and bell-ringing.
Most likely to say: ‘Confess!’
Getting into heaven? Not in one piece she won’t after what Cersei did to her
The Geneva Convention didn’t reach the Seven Kingdoms. If it had, then the supposedly holy Septa Unella wouldn’t have beaten Cersei Lannister with a water ladle and made her drink from the floor like a dog before parading her naked to jeering crowds around the city. Not a nun to mess with, unless you’re a Lannister.
Also-Nuns
Sister Assumpta in Father Ted (1995)
Sister Boniface in Father Brown (2013)
(Briefly) Olive in Pushing Daisies (2007)
Mother Superior in Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005)
Kassia the Byzantine nun in Vikings (2019)
Warrior Nun is available to stream now on Netflix.

Marvel's Captain Marvel: A Legacy of Failed Relaunches
This piece is about the history of the Captain Marvel name in superhero comic books. First we have to start with the originator, then how it was shut down, then we can get to how it was stolen and how it's been handled since. I will not be getting in to Miracleman/Marvelman, since that is a whole other layer of convoluted.
Tumblr media
Fawcett Publications was a publisher of magazines in the 1920s and 30s. They wanted to break into the comic book business after seeing the insane success of Superman starting in 1938. So in 1940 writer Bill Parker and artist CC Beck came up with a superhero for this purpose. The character was to be called Captain Thunder and debut in Flash Comics #1. However, All-American Periodicals beat them to the punch with their own Flash Comics #1 with a cover date of January 1940, debuting the Flash, Hawkman, and other characters. So Fawcett switched the title to Thrill Comics. Which they couldn't use either when Standard/Nedor launched Thrilling Comics #1 with a cover date of February 1940. I guess even the "ing" was too close for trademark comfort. January 1940 also saw the first issue of Fiction House's Jungle Comics, which had a minor backup feature starring Captain Terry Thunder. So when their character was finally unveiled to the public, he was Captain Marvel and appearing in WHIZ Comics #2.
The parallels to Superman were there off the bat and intentional. The first cover features Captain Marvel throwing a car, in reference to the iconic Action Comics #1, but one-upping it. Their powers, costumes, and adventures were somewhat similar. Captain Marvel arguably improved on the Superman formula. Instead of the grown, nerdy Clark Kent, Captain Marvel's secret identity was the child Billy Batson. Rather than looking up to Superman, kids could put their selves in Billy Batson's shoes. The art of CC Beck and others was also more cartoony and the stories more outlandish and fun. While Superman was dealing with corrupt politicians and domestic abusers, Captain Marvel was fighting the moon and hanging out with anthropomorphic tigers.
Tumblr media
Captain Marvel replicated the success of Superman, and for a while even outsold the poster boy of comic books. The character's success led to Fawcett creating a whole line of comics and superheroes like Bulletman, Spy Smasher, Minute-Man, Ibis the Invincible and so on in the titles Nickel Comics, Wow Comics, Master Comics, etc. Captain Marvel started multiplying himself with spinoff characters Captain Marvel Jr. and Mary Marvel (before DC created Supergirl). The publisher experienced great success through the 1940s.
This success bothered some people, namely competitor National (today's DC Comics). They had success earlier shutting down Fox Feature Syndicate's character Wonder Man for being too close to Superman. They even did the same thing to Fawcett with their character Master Man. Starting in 1941 National took Fawcett to court over Captain Marvel. The lawsuit and all its subsequent appeals lasted all the way to 1951. Meanwhile Superman was ripping off elements of Captain Marvel along the way, like starting to actually fly, Lex Luthor becoming a bald mad scientist (like Dr. Sivana), and introducing the adventures of Superboy akin to Captain Marvel Jr. The long legal struggle and the waning superhero popularity of the 1950s led to Fawcett giving up on the case and shutting down their entire comics line in 1953.
Of course, having won, DC took the opportunity to pull over Fawcett's talent and put them to work on Superman. DC then ended up licensing Fawcett's characters in the 1970s. Captain Marvel has been fully integrated to the DC Universe through the years, for better or worse.
There is just one ironic hiccup though. While Captain Marvel lay dormant in the 1960s, the trademark lapsed. Another comic publisher by the name of Timely Comics had went through a few eras and name changes to Atlas Comics and then to Marvel Comics. Marvel was becoming a major force in the early 1960s thanks to Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Steve Ditko. Publisher Martin Goodman demanded that they snatch up the trademark to Captain Marvel. Fitting I suppose given the name of the company.
So in December 1967 Marvel's version of Captain Marvel debuted in Marvel Super-Heroes 12. Rather than a Superman-like character, this version was Mar-Vell, an alien warrior who was tasked to spy on Earth but then decided to protect humanity. The stories were light science fiction fare.
Tumblr media
This Captain Marvel would not become a sales juggernaut like Fawcett's. Marvel has to maintain their right to the trademark at least every two years though. So this has lead to dozens of relaunches and different characters under the Captain Marvel name.
This is their legacy of failure.
After two appearances in Marvel Super-Heroes (12-13) Captain Marvel received his own self-titled comic in May 1968. From the first appearance through the fourth issue of the series, Gene Colan drew the character and Roy Thomas wrote him. Then not even a year in new creative team Arnold Drake and Don Heck hop on. Other creators like Gary Friedrich, Dick Ayers, and Archie Goodwin rotate through. The original green and white costume has a simplistic design that has become retroactively classic, but is really not too special.
Tumblr media
With issue 17 in October 1969, Roy Thomas comes back and is joined this time by Gil Kane. The pair introduce a new costume and the unique dynamic of Captain Marvel playing switcheroo with perennial sidekick Rick Jones. The quality of the book vastly improves, but it only gets the chance to show it off for three issues.
Tumblr media
After a six month hiatus, Captain Marvel resumes with issue 20 and the same creative team from before. This time they only get to pump out two issues. The book will now be bimonthly for the most part from here on out.
The character would feature prominently in the classic Kree/Skrull War storyline in Avengers, also written by Roy Thomas. This kept him relevant through 1971 even without a book.
Tumblr media
And Mar-Vell is back again two years later in 1972 (recall the trademark rules). This time we have three uninspired issues written by three different writers. The only notable piece here is that they're drawn by Wayne Boring. Who was one of the definitive Superman artists of the 1940s and 50s in comic books and strips. In 1967 DC kicked him out, as they had done with most of their iconic Golden Age artists. Super fan and historian Roy Thomas hired him to do a few jobs for Marvel in the 70s. It's cool to see, but his style honestly was out of date by this point. The irony of these past two relaunches is that both returning issues use the cover text "the hero who wouldn't die!" The irony will become evident in a bit.
Tumblr media
By this point DC has licensed the original Fawcett Captain Marvel. Due to Marvel's trademark usage, DC has to title the comic Shazam (the catchphrase Billy Batson uses to transform into the hero). Shazam runs from 1973 through 1978 and then the character moves to anthology backups. Superman even introduces the Big Red Cheese on the cover of the first issue. Within the pages of the comic, the character is still allowed to be called Captain Marvel. This alleged confusion has caused anxiety over the years for DC and with the New 52 reboot in 2011 they tried to officially change the icon's name to Shazam.
Tumblr media
With issue 25 in 1973 Captain Marvel finally becomes a must-read comic when a young Jim Starlin jumps on board as artist. He had previously written and drawn fill-in issues of Iron Man that introduced the characters Thanos and Drax the Destroyer. He brought those characters with him and began writing as well, giving fans the iconic Thanos War arc. Starlin sticks around for less than a year. His final issue is 34, where Mar-Vell fights Nitro and the infamous cover text describes him as "the man who killed Captain Marvel." It's originally just supposed to be a sensational lie as is the tradition.
Tumblr media
With Starlin gone, Captain Marvel still continues to issue 62 in 1979. Al Milgrom and Pat Broderick draw most of this run. Steve Englehart, Scott Edelman, and Doug Moench handle the writing. Nothing truly memorable or relevant happened, though by this point there were Mar-Vell fans who surely enjoyed it.
Supporting character Carol Danvers also got superpowers and got a spinoff title that ran two years. Mostly written by Chris Claremont. Ms. Marvel would have her own too-late creative reinvention in issue 20 thanks to artist Dave Cockrum. This book was arguably better than the book it spun out of at this point. Carol Danvers will become important again in this saga, but for the time being Claremont pulls her way to be an occasional presence in his vast X-Men run.
Tumblr media
Captain Marvel was cancelled prematurely, so Marvel launched a new volume of Marvel Spotlight to pump out inventory issues. Captain Marvel appeared in Marvel Spotlight 1-4, and 8. Of curiosity is that Steve Ditko and Frank Miller drew the last two issues.
Tumblr media
Outside of a few appearances, Mar-Vell doesn't make a major appearance between September 1980 and April 1982. When Jim Starlin was offered to write and draw the first installment of the Marvel Graphic Novel series and kill off a major character. One can presume he wasn't allowed to choose Spider-Man. He went with Captain Marvel, following up from his final issue on the series and revealing that the fight with Nitro gave him cancer. He died surrounded by all his fellow heroes and the book is a genuine emotional classic. It solidifies Mar-Vell as a legend, even if his original series never truly got him to deserve that reputation.
Tumblr media
Mar-Vell would be featured in a reprint series titled The Life of Captain Marvel in 1985 focusing on the Starlin run. A three issue flashback series to his green and white era was published in 1997.
Tumblr media
They need to maintain the trademark though, right? Enter Monica Rambeau in Amazing Spider-Man Annual #16 the same year. Her connection to Mar-Vell was nonexistent, but she took on the Captain Marvel name regardless. Creator Roger Stern carried her over to his legendary Avengers run and she even lead the team for a period. Monica has had tons of memorable appearances since, such as the brilliant Nextwave: Agents of HATE.
Monica would receive solo one-shots in 1989 and 1994. Both by the creative team of Dwayne McDuffie and M.D. Bright.
Tumblr media
The third Marvel character to go by Captain Marvel was Genis-Vell. Originally introduced in Silver Surfer Annual #6 as Legacy, Genis is Mar-Vell's bastard child. Genis gets his father's Nega Bands and even is linked to Rick Jones. He got his own series written by Fabian Nicieza in late 1995 that was cancelled prematurely after six issues. In Avengers Unplugged #5 Genis officially takes the Captain Marvel name from Monica, who then suffers through several code names over the years.
Tumblr media
After disappearing for about two years, Genis pops up again prominently in the Avengers Forever maxiseries. This launched a 2000 series written by Peter David and drawn by ChrissCross. The series was a critical darling and cult hit, but sales weren't perfect.
To try and boost sales, the book was relaunched in 2002 as part of the U-Decide Campaign. Which was a (marketing ploy) bet between David, Bill Jemas, and Joe Quesada. Fans helped to decide which of three books would survive. It helps that the other two books (Marville and Ultimate Adventures) were absolute trash, but Captain Marvel handily won. It lasted another 25 issues to bring the entire run to 60 issues. During the run, the fourth Captain Marvel Phyla-Vell is introduced as Genis' sister/clone. She uses the name briefly and then becomes Quasar and then Martyr in other stories. Genis eventually goes crazy, then dies.
Tumblr media
In 2008 as part of the Secret Invasion crossover, Mar-Vell seems to come back to life in a self-titled miniseries. However, it's revealed that this character is a Skrull with fake memories.
The Skrull fake dies, but is able to pass on his wishes to the Kree hero Noh-Varr. Who was previously known as Marvel Boy, but then becomes Captain Marvel during the Dark Reign era. After discovering he's being manipulated, he abandons the Dark Avengers and takes on the Protector identity.
Tumblr media
While the Avengers stock is rising in the 2000s thanks to Brian Michael Bendis, Carol Danvers is back as Ms. Marvel and her mission is to become the prominent hero she thinks she can be. To really promote her, in 2012 Marvel gives her the Captain Marvel name, redesigns her costume, and launches a new title. Kelly Sue DeConnick will shepard the character for the next few years. This series only lasts 17 issues.
By 2012 Marvel has now entered their relaunch trigger happy era. So in 2014 Captain Marvel is relaunched while keeping the same writer. This volume is even shorter at 15 issues.
As a tie-in to the alternate reality event Secret Wars in 2015, Carol Danvers gets her own miniseries still by KSD.
Tumblr media
Coming out of Secret Wars, Captain Marvel gets another volume. This one lasts only 10 issues. Marvel brings in TV writers Tara Butters and Michele Fazekas. They leave halfway through and are replaced by Christos and Ruth Gage. The character is significantly entangled in the divisive crossover event Civil War II around this era.
In 2017 another relaunch is due and Carol gets the slight title change to The Mighty Captain Marvel. Prose writer Margaret Stohl is the writer. This series lasts nine issues before being renumbered/retitled as part of Marvel's Legacy initiative. Still with Stohl, renumbered for only five issues.
A soon to be released one-shot tie-in to Infinity Countdown promises Carol adventuring with Monica and possibly Mar-Vell. Marvel has been subtly teasing Mar-Vell's genuine return again recently.
Tumblr media
With a Captain Marvel movie starring Carol Danvers just around the corner, Marvel obviously needs to relaunch again (SIGH). July 2018 will bring The Life of Captain Marvel #1. Still written by Stohl, the series promises to retell Carol Danver's origin. So maybe they'll decide to relaunch it again after the origin arc is over.
Tumblr media
It's unclear whether DC would have been able to quickly grab the trademark back in the possibly free periods of 1984, 1987, 1992, 1998, and 2006. I don't know if the publication of collected editions fulfills the trademark requirements. If so, Masterworks and other collections could tick off some of those possible open spots.
To summarize, here are all of Marvel's Captain Marvel titles and relaunches:
Mar-Vell Marvel Super-Heroes 12-13 (December 1967-March 1968) Captain Marvel Vol 1 1-19 (May 1968-December 1969) Captain Marvel Vol 1 20-21 (June-August 1970) Captain Marvel Vol 1 22-62 (September 1972-May 1979) Marvel Spotlight 1-4, 8 (July 1979-September 1980) Death of Captain Marvel (April 1982) Life of Captain Marvel Vol 1 1-5 (August-December 1985) Untold Legend of Captain Marvel 1-3 (April-June 1997)

A KISS Army Marching Into Darkness.
Here’s a short interview with the writers and artist of the newest Army of Darkness crossover with Kiss.
The world famous face-painted rock and roll band, KISS, once again cuts loose in comics, but this time against the threat of deadites! Read this interview about the upcoming KISS/Army of Darkness #1 (DEC171397) from Dynamite Entertainment which hits comic shops February 28.
**********
D.E.: What drew you to taking on this project, and what's been your favorite part of working on it thus far?
Chris Sims: When we did our first Army of Darkness comic, I talked in interviews about how ADO was the only thing that I ever wrote fan-fiction about when I was a kid. I never posted it anywhere -- and I'm old enough that I wrote it on a computer without a modem to even connect to the Internet, so it's been lost to the ages -- but it happened, and it won't surprise you that I spent a lot of time wondering what would happen if I could throw Ash into a crossover, too. Dynamite has done some really great ones in the past, but this one is shaping up to be one of the wildest, if only because we get to put our own spin on the idea of KISS as a kickass interdi mensional supernatural strike-force. Get it?
As for my favorite part, it's gotta be seeing the ideas that Chad cooked up when we were plotting it. Sometimes, talking this stuff out is as fun as writing it, and seeing him go even bigger than I was expecting when we were first bouncing around ideas was fantastic . Believe me, you would've thought the stuff we were going to do was wild before we went three steps beyond it. What we're actually doing? It's not just killer, it's a destroyer!
Chad Bowers: With Ash vs. The Army or Darkness, Chris and I were given kind of carte blanche to do whatever we wanted to the world of AOD, and we went for broke. We introduced some new characters and concepts, and built a legacy for Ash's comics adventures that I'm immensely proud of, but not in a million years could I have guessed we'd get to continue that momentum with the added bonus of tossing the world’s greatest rock n' roll band into the mix! I've been in the tank for KISS since I was in middle school. I remember buying the KISS tribute album, "KISS My Ass" for the Lemonheads (they covered "Plaster Caster"), which lead to me picking up "Greatest Hits" and so on. But when I found out there was a KISS comic with blood in it, I signed up for life! Of course I adore the songs (literally listening to "Do You Love Me" right now), but I'm just as obsessed with the way KISS transcends just the music to become something of a genre themselves. It's something I think about a lot, honestly, so no surprise, it's a big part of our story too!
Ruairi Coleman: Having done some work for Dynamite in the past, I've really been wanting to get my foot in the door here for a long time so I can play in the sandbox of amazing licences that Dynamite have. Chief among those, and high up on my bucket list, is Army of Darkness: Hail to the king, baby.
So, when I was offered the job of drawing the Army of Darkness/Kiss crossover, I couldn't believe my luck! The concept is totally bonkers, but in a way that would make complete sense in the world of AOD. Thinking about it, I'm surprised it hasn't been done already and I'm honored (and more than a little intimidated) to be the guy who draws it.
So far I've just been trying to get familiar with drawing the characters so my favorite part has been re-watching Army of Darkness and reading KISS comics in preparation for this wild adventure. Tough day at the office!

About
When I was young I had a weird idea that I was just fixated on. I wanted the next Metal Gear Solid game to give Solid Snake a teen sidekick who could be his best friend and also do all the cool spy stuff. In retrospect, I can see why this was a worse idea than tricking your audience into playing an anticipated squeal staring a totally secret new bishōnen character instead of a gruff, Nick Fury looking dude they expected. The idea stuck with me because kids don’t always want to be their heroes, they want to hang out with them. They want to be Robin, not Batman. It’s a strange but understandable tic in fandom but it is why things like self-insert fan fiction is so big. More than anything else, Lucas Bishop was a fanboy who got to live the dream of being best friends with his heroes, and you know what? It kinda worked.
Tumblr media
Portrayed by Omar Sy
Lucas Bishop was born of Australian Aboriginal parents in the late 21st century. Years ago a red-haired girl known as the mutant messiah had restored the X-Gene after the events of M-Day but lost control of her powers and accidentally killed over one million baseline humans. The world’s response was to round up all mutants, brand them with an “M”, and place them in relocation camps. These were the camps Bishop and his sister Shard grew up in. These were the camps where they watched their parents die. Raised by their grandmother, Lucas and Shard were raised on the stories of X-Men, mutant freedom fighters of the past. It was these stories that would drive him for the rest of his life.

Mutant freedom fighters known as “The Summers Rebellion” broke down the walls of the camps and freed those inside. In the chaos, Bishop was separated from his family and raised by a thief known as The Witness. He claimed to have been an X-Man in his past and told Bishop of the betrayer that destroyed the rest of the X-Men and the Son of Askani who protected the red-haired girl. Bishop found his way back to his sister and they were both recruited by a new mutant police squad known as the XSE, Xavier’s Security Enforcers. They trained hard and became the youngest officers in the program’s history. Bishop was consumed by his dedication to the job and chased the time traveling mutant Trevor Fitzroy back decades to the late 20th century where he finally came face to face with his heroes, the X-Men.

The X-Men were displeased by Bishop’s militaristic attitude and willingness to kill but Bishop was simply in shock. These were the X-Men, his X-Men, and he would fall in line to learn from them. Bishop struggled to understand the customs of the time but desperately wanted to learn. He and Storm grew close and he quickly became a strong field commander. He was constantly on the lookout for a way to prevent his future and often battled with Gambit, who he believed to be the traitor to cause the fall of the X-Men.

Bishop was among the X-Men to travel into the past and try to stop Legion from killing Magneto. Legion went to kill Magneto but his father, Charles Xavier, took the blow in his stead. This caused the world to rip into an apocalyptic splinter timeline and Bishop was the only one to remember the world as it was. He sought out the X-Men of that world and convinced them to make the world right again. Through great struggle and sacrifice, the X-Men of the Age of Apocalypse sent Bishop back to the moment Charles was killed. Bishop absorbed Legion’s blow and redirect it back at him, killing the young mutant and fixing the time stream.
Tumblr media
Bishop returned to the X-Men, always on the lookout for the traitor. That traitor was revealed to be Charles Xavier himself as Onslaught. Bishop was key in his defeat but felt aimless when Xavier was gone. He traveled to Shi’ar space with the other X-Men but was separated from the team and paled around with Deathbird saving alternate realities. He was captured as one of The Twelve and returned to the X-Men after that event finished, looking for a new purpose in the past.

Bishop joined Storm’s X-Treme X-Men on the hunt for the Destiny Diaries and was essential in getting the squad legitimized as mutant law enforcement officers known as the XSE. He began working as a detective in a Manhattan neighborhood called Mutant Town on the Middle East Side. He investigated a mutant gang war and got to the bottom of a new, dangerous street drug called “Toad Juice” alongside his partner Izzy Ortega. It felt good to be a cop again but it all came crashing down when the Scarlet Witch depowered all but 198 of the world’s mutants.

Bishop remembered the stories from his childhood, this is how it started. Soon the red-haired girl would be born and that could only lead to the camps. He kept this knowledge to himself, how could he tell his friends that their only hope would lead to the enslavement of the mutant race? Bishop was at the mansion when he heard of the first mutant born after M-Day, and he knew it was time to act. He chased down Cable, he remembered the stories of the Son of Askani fathering the girl and knew that is where she would be. He succeeded in incapacitating Cable and drawing his gun on the newborn, but he is attacked by a mutant hunting monster known as Predator X who bit off his right arm. He saw Cable and the child begin to teleport into the future and fired wildly at them. This was his last best chance before they escaped to the time stream and he intended to take it. The shots missed their target but one caught Charles Xavier. Bishop had spent his entire life idolizing the X-Men but now he had killed their leader and became their enemy.

He made his way to Forge’s workshop in Dallas, stole a cool new robot arm, and began blanketing the future on the search for Cable. After an unsuccessful ambush in 2043, Bishop realized that he had to fight this war smarter. Cable could be anywhere on the planet at any time in the future and Bishop had to restrict that. He became a destroyer of worlds, killing billions to make continents inhospitable over hundreds of years. He didn’t care about the lives he destroyed. If he could prevent his future from happening, if he could kill the baby Hope, all of this would go away, right? These weren’t real people he was killing, they were just some mistake of a reality. That’s what he told himself at least. As Bishop tried and failed to destroy her, Hope grew into a young woman and she defeated Bishop with her father’s help. They were not content to leave this shallow husk of a man somewhere he could find them again. They destroyed his time travel device and sent him to the shallow husk of the Earth of 6700 AD, he was forced to live and die on the world he had razed.

His entire life, Lucas Bishop was a fighter, and this was no different. He wandered the wasteland until he was found by the Brothers of the Order. They were a group dedicated to protecting humanity from their dark shadows known as Revenants, beings the Shi’ar called Mummundrai. Bishop became a hunter in their order, seeking penance for what he had done to hope. The Revenant Queen known as the Great White Owl learned of Bishop and enacted a plan to travel back to the 21st century and establish world domination. She succeeded in coming to the modern era with Bishop but was eventually defeated by the X-Men. Bishop experienced deep sorrow for what he had done in the future and his one-time friend Storm decided she would help him make amends.

Hope Summer’s was not so quick to forgive the man who had tried to kill her since the day she was born. The villain Stryfe orchestrated a situation to place Hope in a locked room with a bound Bishop and a sharp Psimitar as some elaborate revenge plot against Cable. Bishop begged for forgiveness but he understood that he deserved to die. Hope chose not to kill him in cold blood and the two reluctantly worked together to stop Stryfe. Since that day, Bishop dedicated his time to understanding the present to see if he could prevent any horrible futures. When Psylocke sent out a psychic distress call, Bishop was one of the X-Men who received it, and he worked with her to prevent the Shadow King from taking over the world.

Must Read
I am just going to tell you that my favorite Bishop based property is incredibly self-serving. It is Bish & Jubez by my Battle of the Atom co-host Adam Reck. It is a delightful adventure about a tough soldier and a spunky teen looking for a piece of junk food. It is so worth your time so check it out. The first volume is complete (you can read the whole thing here) and the second titled Bish & Jubez: The Age of Stryfe is just about to wrap up.

Ranking
I think Bishop can be a fun character if a little stiff. His villainous turn was fantastic and understandable; however, it did serious damage to the long-term health of the character. His redemption in Uncanny X-Force wasn’t convincing and current writers seem content with acting as if he didn’t commit global genocide. Another character that was ranked based on uneven writing was Warlock, and I frankly like that little robot dude better. Under him is Domino, another character I like, but don’t love. I do think Bishop is more flexible in stories than Dom so he can slide in as the new number 44 in the Xavier Files.
Magneto was requested by Max Dweck on Patreon among others. Thank you for the request. If you have a request for how about you send it below? If you want to cut to the front of the two-year long line, we have a Patreon you can support Xavier Files for just $1 to get a line cutting reward.
Make sure you check out my brand new podcast BATTLE OF THE ATOM. It’s where Bish & Jubez creator Adam Reck and I talk about every single X-Men story that ever existed and rank them from best to worst. Episode 6 is up and talk about that time George RR Martin and Stephen King wrote an X-Men book together. Make sure you subscribe on any of the following platforms (or others, I’m not picky) Apple Podcasts | Google Play | Stitcher | RSS.
Click here if you want to see the full ranked list, with links to every entry in the Xavier Files so far.
If you liked what you read be sure to follow Xavier Files on twitter, Tumblr, Facebook!
Next week we got ourselves some Bishop! See you then!

I hadn’t been back for two weeks. I’d been keeping busy with work, but I’d also gone to other places, and I’d not really wanted to examine the reason why. Rationally, I knew there wasn’t any danger—it was a done deal, it wasn’t something that was to be explored or built upon, it was strangers passing in the night, and I was fine with that. That guy wasn’t supposed to be more, and I’d been fine with that, I was fine with that. And yet I couldn’t move on, I was almost afraid to go back. The problem was that I didn’t know what I was afraid of, what scared me more, the thought of seeing him again, or the thought of never seeing him at all. I checked my coat and rolled my neck before I entered the dimly lit bar.
It was fairly busy—two thirds full at least, most all tables were taken, the crowd at the bar rowdy and loud, no stool unoccupied. I scanned the room and saw my friend wave from a table on the far side and set out towards her, hailing a waitress on the way and ordered. Halfway there I stopped in my tracks and turned my head to the innermost corner, a shiver rippling through me, causing my legs to wobble. Fuck. Thank god.
He was sitting alone in a booth, nursing a bottled beer, his eyes glinting darkly. His stance was superficially relaxed, he was sagging in his seat, but he was tense and alert, and it looked like he’d been sitting there for hours. I met his gaze, the heat of it radiating straight down, the memory of him in me flashing in my head, and I knew he’d been waiting. Not how long, but I knew he’d been waiting, watching, searching. For me. He tipped his bottle towards me, drank deep, rose in a completely fluid, almost catlike motion and came towards me, his mouth curling enough to be benign but his jaw set enough to be almost intimidating. He halted in front of me without once averting his eyes. I stared back, unable to process fully, my pulse and breathing quickening, my brain wreaking havoc by painting vivid images in my head, my body reacting in not at all subtle ways.
“Hey.”
“Hey.” My voice carried better than I thought it would, but the rumble of his drove a spike straight through the little resolve I had left, and I knew, with certainty, why I had avoided coming here. He held out his hand, and I took it without thinking, there wasn’t a question really.
“Dance with me.” He lead me to the middle of the floor, stopped and positioned me in front of him, my back to him, and he held me lightly, his cheek resting at my temple. I started swaying with him, feeling him rub against me, the buttons of his denim vest getting caught between us, scraping my back, scruff on his jaw chafing my cheek, his arms flexing around me, the bare skin on mine vibrating from where we touched, and yes—the hard unyielding length of him grinding into my ass. I could feel how slick my thighs were, my core was burning, longing for him, and I fell back and exposed my neck. I wanted him closer, I wanted more, and I didn’t much care where I got it or who could witness.
“Can you feel that?” He spoke hoarsely, his tongue flicking my earlobe, his lips hot and wet, his breath in my hair and ear and down my neck, my jaw falling open as his hands stilled my hips, and he pressed harder, driving the point home. “Can you remember how it made you feel?”
“Yes.” I could hardly speak, but I wanted him to hear in my voice how he affected me. “Yes. I remember.”
“Are you ready for me? Are you wet for me?”
“Yes.” My lungs didn’t work properly, but I carried on, he could hear me just fine. “Oh god yes.”
“Good.” He stopped moving and turned me around. His eyes, blackened by lust, pierced mine, and he kissed me, his cock almost painful against my pelvis and stomach. He tasted of beer and mint, the fact that he’d taken time to have one after he’d seen me spoke of an arrogance I knew he was right to have. Because here I was, seriously considering letting him fuck me right in the middle of the throng on the dancefloor. “You want to sit down? In the dark? Over there?” He indicated the table he’d come from.
“Yes.” My reply was unsteady from the chills running down my spine.
He released me, took my hand and dragged me through the crowd, elbowing people left and right, not even dignifying the angry mutterings with a glance. We reached the spot he'd vacated before, it was barely lit, two old faux leather sofas with a worn table between them and even more secluded by a booth beside it. He gestured for me to sit and pulled some notes out of his pocket and adjusted his jeans, his bulge was clearly visible, and it didn't seem like he cared at all. He took off the vest and threw it on the opposite side.
“Can I get you a drink?”
I craned my neck to see if I could spot the drink I’d ordered on my friend's table, but I figured she’d take it if it was there. “Sure. A G&T?”
He nodded and left for the bar, it was fascinating to see how the crowd seemed to dissolve in front of him, apparently his air of dominance wasn’t exclusively for me. Again I was struck by his gait, even in those heavy boots he was graceful, he looked lethal, someone you’d not want to piss off, and it was the sexiest thing I’d seen in my life. It didn’t hurt that his black tank was tight enough to set off every muscle in his back, or that his jeans made me remember how his ass had looked when I’d seen it last. I was working myself into a frenzy just watching him, and the thought of him coming back made me gasp for air, if left for long I’d start fucking hyperventilating. I squirmed into the seat as he finished up and turned back, and I thought I saw a smirk before he left the bar, my luck would have had him notice me even through the dark. Well, brilliant. It’s not like he doesn’t already know. He stopped and offered the glass and waited until I scooted into the wall before sliding in after me, angled himself towards me, legs spread, ankle hooked under his knee, held up his bottle, and did nothing to hide he knew exactly the state of me. I flinched under his gaze, but I forced myself to meet it steadily, I knew enough to hold my own and clinked my glass to his beer. He extended his arm along the back of the sofa and tugged a few strands of my hair.
“It’s darker than last time.”
Why did the fact that he noticed tug at my heart? Fuck. “Yeah. I tried a different shade.”
“It looks nice.”
“Thank you.”
His hand moved to my bare shoulder, tracing the strap of my dress and bra. I didn’t even try to hide the tremble. He smiled as he drank deeply.
“I’m not looking for something more.” He said it matter of factly as one finger hooked under my bra, and I managed a sip to stall, both to hide the small pang I felt, but mostly to avoid ripping my own clothes off.
“Good. Me neither.” Which wouldn’t have been a lie half an hour ago, but now? My heart sank a little, the pang wasn’t as small as I’d thought, but small enough that I could ignore it for the immediate price, my body took precedence, my heart could take the regret later. He stared at me, a finger tracing my clavicle while he drained his beer, I couldn't get a read on him, but I felt sure he got one on me. He moved up my neck and jaw and worried my lower lip with his thumb. I opened my mouth automatically, sucked it gently, and he bit his lip and shifted in his seat. He sat his bottle on the table and relieved me of my glass before closing the distance a little, still holding my eyes.
“You sure?”
“Absolutely.”
“Okay. Good.” He found the back of my neck, thread his fingers through my hair and leaned in, hesitated a little, licked his lips and swallowed, his eyes black pools in the dark. “Good.” He glanced at my mouth, half open, probably quivering in anticipation, and finally kissed me.
The taste of beer mingled with the taste of gin wasn’t something I’d normally go for, but it was straight up delicious as his tongue met mine, hot and wet, exploring and hesitant at first, then his grip tightened in my hair, and he found my hand and laid it on his crotch, pressing into it, letting me feel the size and girth, and I moaned into him. I lifted myself on one knee, and he grabbed my thigh and steered me on top of him until I straddled him and removed my hand in exchange for my aching throbbing pussy. I fought for air as he clamped his hand on my hip to steady me when he started rotating underneath me, rubbing his cock against my clit while he opened my mouth further, invading me, causing me to thrust down hard, desperate for release, and I broke the kiss, heaving for oxygen, panting furiously.
“Fuck.” He was equally breathless as he untangled his hand from my hair, only pulling out a little, reached down and stroked up under my skirt. He hissed when he made contact with my inner thigh, smearing his palm as he found what was left of the lace of my panties. He chuckled, and I looked down in a haze, unable to connect even the simplest of dots. “Why do you bother?”
“What?” It was a barely discernible huff, all I could concentrate on was his fingers and what they were doing and why the fuck they weren’t doing more of it.
He teased a finger under the edge and grinned at the sharp gasp. “Why do you bother with underwear? It doesn’t seem to do you a whole lot of good.”
“Oh fuck off, I don’t do this with everyone.” I whimpered in response to the second finger joining the first and he laughed again. “I-I-I-I nev—aahhh.”
“Yeah, me neither.”
I vaguely registered something in his voice, a tinge of melancholy perhaps—or longing maybe—but the thought vanished as soon as his other hand released me, and I lifted myself a little to make room for him, aching to feel him inside me, any part of him, I just needed something.
“Fuck, you're so wet for me. So ready.” He finally pushed the lace aside and dipped into the pool of my arousal, and my lungs stopped working.
“Aaahhh.”
He didn't move at all, and I knew if I tried to meet him he would stop. I hovered, my whole body shaking from the strain, it made me clench and set every nerve ending on fire. My mouth was open, fighting to breathe while he twisted my hair with his other hand and watched me, forcing me to look at him.
“You can't move, we'll be thrown out. Be still for me.”
“Uh uh. Sure.” My heart threatened to pound its way out of my chest, my whole midriff was burning, and all I could see were his eyes, authoritative but soft somehow—reassuring, demanding trust.
He didn't waver but held me there in delicious agony for an eternity before he wriggled his fingers, made them slick and smooth, spread me out and sank into me slowly, twisting as he went and covered my silent scream with a kiss. He held still until I had adjusted around him, my walls contracting as he carefully stroked and turned until he couldn’t get any deeper and his thumb reached my clit. He kept my mouth occupied while he started rotating, thrusting gently and massaging me both inside and out, his tongue twirling and licking in rhythm with his hand. The fist in my hair locked me to him, and all I could do to stay up was bracing myself on his shoulders, around his neck, my nails burying themselves in his skin, my knees so tense my whole frame was shaking. I whined into his mouth, and he broke away, leaving an inch of space between us.
“You wanna come?” He circled my clit languidly, rubbing his fingers in me. I swelled and throbbed to the breaking point, it was painful, it was agony, a sweet torture that promised relief and bliss, and I was torn. I wanted to drag it out, I wanted him to continue, not to relent, but I knew I wouldn’t manage to hold out for long, and my strength was waning fast. I was only distantly aware that we were in public, and I couldn’t bring myself to care one bit, this was worth being arrested for. I panted, biting my lip to keep from screaming out, my eyes glued shut. I knew his expression, it would be dark and teasing, he was enjoying the power and I was more than willing to relinquish it, but I couldn’t watch him, I knew I would fall apart. “You want me to let you come.”
“Yes.” It was a small moan, maybe I thought it conveyed the “pretty please” buried in there better.
“How bad do you want to?”
“Please.” I fell down an inch, and he stilled his thumb. “No. I’m sorry. Please.” I retreated with immense effort, and he continued his labour, chuckling. I let out a deep sigh. “Yes. Thank you.”
He picked up the pace a little, added stroking to the repertoire, and reinforced the pressure on my head.
“Look at me.” I opened my eyes without thinking, he looked more serious than I’d imagined but his chest was heaving, and I felt his jeans moving against my thighs, I didn’t want to imagine how they would look. “Don’t look away or I will stop.” The threat made it even better, my jaws clamped shut, my neck was a rigid mass, and he finally granted me permission.
It didn’t take long, the build-up was near complete just by the expectation, I could feel the smacking sound of his fingers moving in my soaked slit, his thumb pressed harder and faster, his fingers spread and stretched, stroking and massaging, leaving every nerve open, every touch bringing me closer, he hooked his fingers and I came.
The orgasm washed over me, wave upon wave as he kept my eyes in his, watching me unravel until he stilled his hand, allowing me to sink down, and kissed me gently.
“That’s a good girl. You want to get out of here so I can fuck you?”
I could barely hear him through the hammering of my pulse in my head, his words were dabbing my lips, but I nodded weakly. “Yes.”
His hand started to retract, and I exhaled sharply as he made sure to hit every part of swollen skin he could, lingering on the most oversensitive area. I was still clenching, and I could feel his cock twitching under me, increasing the residual throbbing, soiling him, and he jutted his hips, letting me know he felt it too. Suddenly I got the urge to taste him, to feel him in my mouth, to see him become as undone as I was. I waited until I got my body to comply, planting soft kisses on his jaw and neck, nibbled his earlobe and felt him groan and struggle for air.
“How much do you think we can get away with?” My whisper was warm air into his ear and his reply as ragged.
“I can’t get caught doing this.” He swallowed hard. “It would be dangerous.”
“That’s what makes it fun.” I pushed off him, glided down and settled on the floor, banking on the table hiding my head. I started undoing his fly while he his eyes widened in shock for a brief moment, but his hand was still stuck in my head, I could feel his reinforced grip and knew he wouldn’t stop me. I ripped the last of the buttons open and revelled in the sight of his cock through his boxers. I might have licked my lips. I smiled as I palmed him and pulled the fabric down.
“Shit.” His other hand pushed hair away from my face, granting him unimpeded vision.
I took a moment to feast my eyes, his dick was a thing of beauty. I'd not seen it before, but I knew how it felt, how the length and girth would challenge me, and I salivated at the prospect.
I grabbed the base, anchoring him and moved in and sucked his balls in turn while I looked up and met his hooded eyes, taking in his slack jaw and shining lips. I grinned as I drew my tongue flat the whole way up, the veins and ridges unyielding, the skin taut and smooth and he fell back as I pulled his foreskin down to reveal his head. I closed around it, teasing the slit and squeezed a drop of precum to taste.
“Atta girl.” He was watching, voice thick and barely audible, teeth and tongue chewing and flicking his lip, tensing and clenching under me. “That's it. Fuck, that's it.”
I opened up, sank down on him and took him as far as I could, gagging around him and he shook. I tightened my grip and began pumping, sucking and licking in tune, forcing him as far in as I could, spit and precum dripping every time he hit my throat. It was the biggest and best-tasting dick I'd ever had in me, and I felt myself squirming as the blood started surging right through my centre, the need for him not satiated in the least.
“Jesus. Fuck. That’s a good girl, just like th—ahhhh—” Both his hands were in my hair, digging into my skull, twisting so hard I thought I’d get a bald spot. He held me still in an iron grip and started thrusting, not hard but hard enough that I was damn near choking on him, my eyes watering, and my pussy throbbing so much I thought I’d come again. He was grunting, and I could feel the strain in his arms from trying to hold back. He managed to release me a little and let me control the pace but I continued forcing him as deep as possible, my hand meeting my mouth steadily, and within seconds I could feel him expanding and convulsing, and with one last powerful shove he came.
“Oh, fuck, fuck, I—” He sounded like he was choking. Which, to be perfectly honest, suited me just fine.
I pulled out a little to close my lips around him, wanting to catch as much of him that I could, his load shooting straight into my throat in hard rhythmic bursts. I swallowed furiously, sucking him gently while he emptied himself, his nails scratching my scalp, his hips jerking erratically, his eyes rolled up, and he fell back, panting frantically. I took as much as I could and began licking him clean while he came down. He started freeing his hands, flinching slightly as he became more and more sensitive, watching me and carefully began stroking and straightening my hair.
“Jesus, woman. That was—that was—fuck.”
I kissed the tip of his cock and pulled up the foreskin before I tucked it back into his boxers, my cheeks actually hot as I met his eyes. They were twinkling, and he looked more relaxed than I’d seen him, his mouth curling, most of the intensity gone from his beautiful features, and I felt my chest swell. Not good.
“That was magnificent. You are magnificent.” He cupped my face and wiped my cheeks dry, I hoped my makeup wasn’t all messed up. I felt vulnerable and exposed, my midriff was still churning but at the moment the emotional struggle took precedence. He pulled me up, still cradling my face, and I climbed onto his lap again and closed my eyes with a sigh as he kissed my cheeks, my eyes, my jaw and each corner of my mouth before covering it and teased his tongue barely inside, tasting himself on me, humming in apparent satisfaction. I smiled and laid my hand above his heart, the beating slowly reverting to normal.
“How do I look?”
He leaned back and studied me with a grin. “Like someone who’s almost choked on a dick.”
I gave his shoulder a shove. “I’m serious.”
“So am I. You look fucking beautiful.” He pushed my hair back and tugged at the ends. “I’m sorry about that by the way. I didn’t mean to come on so hard, it was just unexpected.” He traced a finger from my temple down my neck. “A little rosy but your makeup is fine. Maybe freshen your lipstick, although they’re really red and plump.” He sucked the bottom one, still grinning, and I finally began to relax.
“So I can show myself?”
“Yes.”
“In public?”
“Yes.”
“Okay.” I leaned in for another kiss, the bliss of the aftermath setting in even if I couldn’t resist a small rotation of my hips, my underwear was still crooked, and all that was between us was the cotton of his boxers. He reciprocated by grinding languidly, lazily, and his whole frame rumbled underneath me.
“Really. You wanna go again? So soon?” He brushed my skirt up and ghosted his palms up my thighs, stopping when he felt the lining of my panties and fondled it. “What about a drink first?”
I inhaled sharply, my thirst being for something else entirely, and he laughed again.
“Or did you have your fill?”
“Fuck you.” I clenched hard on top of him, and I felt him stir, growing more rigid. I smiled at him, his lip was caught between his teeth and his fingers fanned out and secured me in place.
He closed his eyes and ground harder.
“Fuck me.” It came out more commanding than I intended, but as soon as I said it I really meant it.
His eyes flew open, and he exhaled forcefully. “Not here.” He nuzzled my ear and kissed my jaw before he withdrew his hands, letting my dress down with them. I tipped sideways and landed beside him. I wasn’t happy, but he was right, we’d been more than fortunate and there was no point in challenging our luck further. I took my half-empty glass from the table and drained it, if truth be told I was parched. He watched me, amusement playing on his face.
“Another?”
“Yes, please.”
“Coming right up.” He buttoned his jeans and straightened his clothes before he got up, slipped on the vest as he disappeared towards the bar, leaving me strangely empty. I was worried for some reason, the relief seeping out in his absence, sure, the intensity was gone, but I felt the change was too great. I thought I detected something else in his shoulders, dejection or anxiety and suddenly panic rose like bile in my throat. The sight of him returning was relieving until I saw his face, he had the same closed off expression he’d worn before, even if he smiled as he set our drinks on the table and folded in beside me.
“Thanks.” I took the gin and sipped, he met my gaze, but now it looked wary. Fuck. At least I was prepared when he spoke.
“Listen. I’m sorry. I can’t do this.” He was picking at the label on the bottle, talking to it, averting his eyes. “It’s not you.”
I scoffed. “No, it’s not. That’s all you.” My words had a venomous tinge, I was far more hurt than I liked to admit. All the tension was back but for entirely different reasons. I felt used. I knew it was irrational, I’d been more than willing, I’d gotten as much as I’d given, but the feeling of rejection was overwhelming. I drank up and set my glass down with a small bang, furious that I felt tears starting to emerge. I didn’t look at him, I didn’t want him to see. I was just thankful that my voice didn’t break. “Please leave me.”
He hesitated, I could feel him moving beside me, hear him drawing breath as if to speak then stopping short several times. Eventually he got up, left the bottle almost full, and stood for a while, looking at me, I felt the prickling down my spine.
“I’m sorry.” He walked away, leaving me more alone than I’d felt in years. Fuck. Fuck, fuck, fuck.
I sat there for a few minutes until I’d gotten the tears under control. I was stronger than this, I couldn’t get caught up in some random dude, no matter how attractive or good a lay he was. Fuck him. I gathered my bag from the corner where I’d dropped it and got up, avoiding the table with my friend. I knew she’d seen me when I arrived, but she’d probably also seen me with him, and we had a firm agreement not to interfere unless one of us signalled. I considered having another drink, but I didn’t feel like braving the crowd no matter how much I wanted to get drunk. Fuck him.
He was that guy after all, so why was I surprised? I'd fucked up, I'd come looking for something I didn't even know I wanted, and I'd fooled myself into thinking he'd wanted it too. But he was just another asshole cruising for an easy lay, although it was strange that he, who basically could get any woman he'd want, had seemed to be waiting for me. I shook my head, trying to chase the line of thought away, no use going there now. I hitched my bag up and went to check out my coat.
I felt downright dejected as I stepped outside, sad and remorseful, the chill night breaking my legs and chest out in goosebumps, stopped for a moment to feel the air before I turned and started walking towards my apartment three blocks down. I had walked maybe ten feet when I became aware of movement behind me, the sound of a boot stubbing out a cigarette, and a voice that radiated heat through my frozen core.
“Hey. Hey miss.” I stopped as a surge of elation and relief washed over me, despite chastising myself internally. I didn’t want to be so easy, but I turned to meet him nevertheless. He approached slowly, extending his hand to me. “My name is Chris.” I shook it and watched as his eyes crinkled and his mouth curled up in a small apologetic smile. “I’m an asshole and a coward, and I’m sorry for letting you see that.” He reached into his pocket and produced the panties from our previous encounter. “And I think I have something of yours.”

What If…? Episode 9 Review: A Missing Puzzle Piece
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
This review contains spoilers for Marvel’s What If…? episode 9
In the season finale of Marvel’s What If…?, ‘What if… The Watcher Broke His Oath?’, we discover what happens when The Watcher finally intervenes in the MCU’s escalating multiversal madness.
As some of you may have assumed, the Guardians of the Multiverse do indeed assemble to stop Tony Stark’s godlike, universe-slaying murder bot, with Doctor Strange helping to pull Ultron’s strings as the team’s de facto leader.
There’s a lot to enjoy in the episode, but it stops short of greatness through no fault of Marvel’s own. Due to pandemic-related constraints, the season is missing a pretty essential Gamora and Tony Stark-centric installment that helps set up the whole ‘Guardians of the Multiverse’ vibe in the finale. We will likely see it all play out in Season 2, but that might be quite a while away from hitting our screens.
Our What If…? reviews adopt a different kind of format – more of a breakdown that we hope will satisfy die-hard Marvel fans but still help bring those less familiar with the MCU up to speed.
With that in mind, let’s dig deeper into ‘What if… The Watcher Broke His Oath?’
Required viewing
For this season finale, you’ll need to have seen pretty much all of the previous eight episodes to make full sense of these events. It also helps to have seen Captain America: The Winter Soldier at some point!
Voice cast
Jeffrey Wright is our Watcher, Hayley Atwell is Peggy Carter/Captain Carter, Lake Bell (Harley Quinn) is Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, Frank Grillo is Brock Rumlow/Crossbones, Georges St. Pierre is Georges Batroc (the Leaper), Chadwick Boseman is T’Challa/Star-Lord, Michael B. Jordan is Erik Killmonger, Chris Hemsworth is Thor, Benedict Cumberbatch is Doctor Strange, Toby Jones is Arnim Zola, Tom Hiddleston is Loki, Kurt Russell is Ego, Samuel L. Jackson is Nick Fury, Mick Wingert is Tony Stark/Iron Man, Ross Marquand is Ultron and Cynthia McWilliams (Bosch, Marvel Heroes) stands in for Zoe Saldana as Gamora.
What’s different?
In an altered version of the Captain America: The Winter Soldier opening, Captain Carter, Brock Lumlow and Black Widow begin their hostage rescue mission on the pirate-captured SHEILD ship the Lemurian Star. We discover that Peggy and Natasha have become BBFs in this branch timeline, with Natasha still attempting to play Cupid to a lovelorn Cap.
Peggy begins to scrap with Batroc the Leaper onboard the Star, but is interrupted by The Watcher, who tells her that she has been chosen for Doctor Strange’s new Ultron-stopping multiversal superhero team.
Meanwhile, as Star-Lord T’Challa rescues Dairy Queen Peter Quill from Ego, The Watcher recruits him too. We then hop to Nidavellir, where an alternate duo of Tony Stark and Gamora are helping Dwarf King Eitri melt the Infinity Gauntlet. We’re told that Gamora is a “survivor of Sakaar” and a destroyer of Thanos, but sadly we never got to see any of this transpire. The Erik Killmonger we saw take over Wakanda is also picked up, along with Las Vegas Party Prince Thor.
The Watcher and Doctor Strange explain the Ultron mission to their team – get the Infinity Stones away from Ultron and destroy them in Gamora’s crusher MacGuffin – even as Killmonger starts making some mental chess moves to betray them all. It turns out that his dark nature is built into their overall plan, so it’s fine I guess. Also, it turns out that Stephen isn’t as good as Cap or T’Challa at performing a rousing speech (which tracks) but thankfully he is really good at doing protection spells.
Ultron soon discovers the newly-assembled Guardians of the Multiverse thanks to Thor’s blundering, and a terrific fight ensues as the Guardians face off against him in the universe from the penultimate episode where Black Widow was the human race’s lone survivor. The aforementioned crusher doesn’t work in this timeline (whoops) but Strange captures Ultron and Killmonger in a pocket universe after Cap and Black Widow upload the Zola brain program into Ultron using Hawkeye’s trusty USB arrow.
How does it work out?
The Guardians of the Multiverse are all returned to the timelines from whence they came, except for Black Widow, who The Watcher takes pity on and drops off in the middle of an alternate universe that is missing a Natasha. We see her fighting Loki aboard a SHIELD helicarrier and saving the day in an Avengers team that includes Captain Marvel, and we can assume that this is the world from episode 3 where Hank Pym took out all of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes apart from Captain America. It’s nice!
In a post-credits scene, we see BBFs Natasha and Peggy discover the Hydrastomper in the Lemurian Star’s cargo, and it’s teased that Steve Rogers might still be alive inside.
Standout moments
I really loved seeing Captain Carter running the Lemurian Star mission with SHIELD! I feel a little robbed of seeing Peggy and Natasha’s banter in live action, as it felt like they had so much chemistry together. I did see Twitter explode with some mini slash fic after this episode began streaming, and if I were to, say, have a secret Captain Carter fan fiction blog that I regularly update, which of course I don’t and you shouldn’t try and find that because it absolutely doesn’t exist, then I could perhaps imagine some romantic stories for these two coming to life there, in that 100% imaginary and not real blog. Anyway, yes. Move over Steggy and Stucky, there’s a new MCU portmanteau in town: Pegasha. Nateggy? Eh, it’s a work in progress.
The finale also gave us one last Chadwick Boseman performance as T’Challa, and it was great to hear his voice here in a new little adventure with Michael B. Jordan’s Killmonger, even if he still couldn’t get through to him when the stakes were even higher.
The animation and design was top notch, and there were lots of little Easter eggs to enjoy from past episodes, including the zombie-vomiting portal and Strange producing countless Mjolnirs instead of the copies of himself we saw in Avengers: Endgame. We also got an Alexei mention from Peggy, and the return of The Little Arrow That Could. I’ll admit it’s a little hard to swallow ‘HYDRA to the rescue’ as an MCU concept, but needs must where the Devil drives.
I’m looking forward to checking out Season 2 of the show in the future, and possibly seeing the continuation of some of the Season 1 stories. But by the time these arrive, the implications of the Marvel multiverse will have hit the MCU in a major way through the likes of Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Hopefully, those won’t take any of the fun out of seeing alternate versions of the characters we’ve come to love.
