An analysis on Anya (an Anya-lysis!)
As promised in my Twiyor season 1 wrap up post, it's time for me to give Anya time in the analysis spotlight – an "Anya-lysis" if you will! (yes, I've been waiting to make that pun!)
Tumblr media
*I apologize in advance for the length of this post. I felt that splitting it into two would have hindered the flow of the analysis, so I kept it as one long post. But I promise it's not as long as it seems...the high number of images make it seem longer!*
Before I get into my analysis, I wanted to preface this post with a fantastic quote from @incomingalbatross, who perfectly describes the unique role Anya has in the series.
"Realizing that Spy X Family really is The Anya Show to me, and not just because "oh look, cute baby child" but because Anya is the center of the story. She has so many secrets resting on those tiny shoulders. She is juggling so many agendas. She's the one who knows everything and her choices drive the plot—she chose Twilight, she chose Yor, she chose Bond—and even when you look at the other characters and their relationships she IS the star they orbit around! Twilight and Yor's relationship is built on their shared care for Anya! And more than that, at the core of it all, Anya's goals are the ones we're invested in.
The center of this story isn't the superspy trying to do his job, or the assassin trying to do hers. It's the little girl who said "FAMILY" and pulled the building-blocks of one close around her with all her tiny strength, and everyone else in this story keeps being moved and changed and redirected by the force of Anya's attachments to her family.
And at the same time she is SO SMALL"
While Twilight may be the protagonist, and Yor the deuteragonist, Anya is definitely the main character in Spy x Family. Not only would there be no "family" without her bringing Twilight and Yor together, but her status as the main character is quite unique among shonen series, or even media in general.
Typically in stories where a little kid (like, below the age of 10) is the main character, either the majority of other major characters are also little kids, or the kid's main purpose is to be a cute comic-relief foil for the adults. But while there are kids Anya's age in SxF, the other important characters in the plot, namely Twilight and Yor, are not. So rather than the typical scenario of the main kid character constantly being surrounded by and working off their fellow kid characters, Anya is more often interacting with her adult parents. And it's not just for cutesy moments and comic relief – the true heart of SxF is about a fake family that could any minute be destroyed, with only little Anya being aware of this grim reality and doing everything she can to keep things together...all without the ability to be truthful with anyone, not with the adults or her fellow kids. While her parents are each secretly fighting for their own vision of world peace, Anya is too…the "world peace" of the family she doesn't want to lose. It really is a one-of-a-kind scenario for a little kid character.
Tumblr media
But having such a special main character role doesn't necessitate a well-written character. But in Anya's case, she definitely is. In fact, I think she's the most well-written little kid character I've ever seen.
Too often in media little kids are portrayed as being overly cutesy, overly bratty/whiny, and/or act much older than they should. A key factor in making a little kid character believable is that you can't just make them cute and/or emotionally immature...they have to also be weird. Anyone who's spent time with little kids knows all the weird stuff they say and do because of their less restricted child brains and ignorance about the world. A good example of this is Lilo from Lilo and Stitch (another well-portrayed kid character). The movie does a good job showing all the weird habits Lilo has, like the bizarre origins of her favorite doll, the freaky voodoo stuff she does to the local bullies, and how she totally buys the fact that Stitch is a dog. Likewise, Anya has tons of little endearing weirdnesses, starting with her wanting a spy dad and assassin mom simply because she thinks it's "cool," to the funny lingo she develops like "ooting" (odekeke) and "ohayou-masu" ("happy morning," a.k.a, an adorably incorrect way of saying "good morning"), to thinking it's acceptable to give George a leaf as a parting gift (then wanting it back later), to her comical remarks whenever she thinks Loid and Yor are being "flirty."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another realistic aspect of Anya's character is the fact that she's not super-smiley and overly cheerful/bubbly like many other main character kids. Not that she doesn't smile and can't be cheerful, but her default expression is a look of uncertainty or wide-eyed cluelessness, which makes sense considering her upbringing (I'm talking about her default expression in canon, not in merch or other marketing as characters tend to always smile in these even if that's not their usual expression – just look at Yuri's merch!) Most of the time when other characters are talking, she looks perplexed, like she isn't sure what's going on but she's really trying to learn/understand.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These expressions make more sense to me than a child who smiles all the time, because she's at an age where she still doesn't understand the right emotions to feel at the right time. A fantastic example of this is when she punches Damian – her face is totally blank! No anger, no fear, no embarrassment...because she still hasn't learned the proper emotions to feel in a situation like this.
Tumblr media
All she knew was what Yor told her and that she was bothered by Damian's attitude. In fact, the iconic smug smile that she shows in that scene is the result of her not knowing how to properly react when faced with bullying (cry, get angry, etc).
Tumblr media
Similarly, she has a very bored expression when all the kids are upset about George's plight, as if she doesn't really get what all the to-do is about. This also creates good contrast to how the other Eden kids from their rich families were probably forced to grow up fast, and thus act more like 8-10-year olds than the 6-year olds they're supposed to be. Meanwhile Anya, who's supposedly younger than them, stands out with her more childlike mannerisms.
Tumblr media
This all makes sense not just because she's still a little kid, but because her view of emotions has been skewed by the fact that she can read people's minds. So she has to not only learn the socially proper way to react to people's actions and words, but also when she should, or should not, react to what's on their mind. I believe this is why she has such a wide variety of expressions compared to the other characters – her mind reading has forced her to experience way more emotions at such an impressionable age, though not always with enough context and guidance to identify when they're socially acceptable to express.
There are way too many examples of Anya's incredible range of expressions, so I'll just have to pick a few!
Tumblr media
Put all this together – her childlike reactions to situations, but with a twist because she can read minds, plus her endless array of comical faces, and you have one of the funniest characters I've ever seen.
Because Anya has such a wide variety of expressions, and her default expression is that of uncertainty, there's a lot more meaning when she does smile. The shining smile she has when Loid praises her for getting a stella, when she plays with Bond for the first time, and when she meets up with Becky after their shopping trip, have a lot more significance because that's not an emotion she expresses all the time. Since happy/cheerful isn't her default mood, the emotional impact of scenes where she does smile is all the more stronger.
Tumblr media
Likewise, considering her age, Anya isn't much of a crier either. Having a kid character burst into tears and throw temper tantrums is common, but the amount of notable times Anya has exhibited this behavior is relatively few. She did have a tantrum early on when Loid stopped her from going into his room and when she demanded that Bond be her dog…but those are the only notable cases in my opinion. She has shed tears here and there, but again, not a significant number of times. Similar to the scenes where she smiles, when she does cry (in a non-comical way), like when she's reminded about her mother at the Eden interview or when she's finally reunited with Yor after the bus hijacking, it has a lot more meaning.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another common trait for little kid characters is that they're usually a representation of total purity and innocence. While Anya doesn't have the same dark ulterior motives and immoral occupations that the adults have, she's not shown to be a complete angel either. Even though good intentions are what drive her, she can be a manipulator, mischievous, and even cocky at times, like when she insists on being called' "Starlight Anya" after getting her first stella, when she was being overly competitive with Damian after the bus hijacking, when she was joking around on the bus after finding out the bombs were fake, and when she almost attacked Bond after he chewed up Penguinman. But all of these examples only serve to make her a more fleshed out character as opposed to just being the cutesy, happy series mascot all time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Obviously because of her mind reading powers, she manipulates the adults around her all the time, but again, there's never any malice involved…it's clearly the result of a little kid doing everything in her power to keep the happy family she's created. And due to her mind reading ability, she's learned to be much more proactive than reactive – she knows what people are going to do before they do it, and what their intentions are without them saying it. This has allowed her to become resourceful way beyond her years, which has led to her saving the lives of both Twilight and Yor on more than one occasion.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One emotion Anya does have an abundance of is empathy. Typically children don't start to develop empathy – the ability to understand and relate to the intentions and feelings of others – until a bit past Anya's age. But because of Anya's ability to read minds, it makes sense that this part of her development would take priority over something like proper speech and school smarts. Her empathy extends to all the adults around her, her fellow kids, and even animals. While a lot of her empathetic actions stem from her need to help keep Twilight's and Yor's identities secret and thus maintain the peace of the Forger family, there are many examples where this isn't the case and she's simply acting out of nothing but concern for others: comforting the Eden cow because she understood it was scared, worrying about the well being of the Project Apple dogs, leaping into action when she heard someone drowning, and comforting Damian when she knew he was scared during the bus hijacking.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even when identity reveals aren't at stake, she still comforts Twilight and Yor when they need it, like when she thought Twilight had a nightmare after his backstory reveal, and when she knew Yor was concerned about Loid's relationship with Fiona.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The bus hijacking was a prime example of Anya being empathetic, but not to an unrealistic degree. She empathized with Billy enough to diffuse the situation, but not on a deeper level because, again, she's a little kid. She understood he was upset, but she didn't have outpouring sympathy or deep, introspective thoughts about his situation – that's something an adult would do, not a little kid who's still learning what emotions to feel at what times. What she eventually does is something that makes perfect sense both for her personality and age. With some great resourcefulness on her part, she was able to figure out what she had to say to manipulate Billy the right way, but at the same time she was playing it by ear and basically clueless as to the depth of the matter, yet mustered up all the courage she could…typical Anya.
Tumblr media
There are a lot more examples like this of Anya's sense of empathy, too many to list. But the bottom line is, although Anya does use her powers to manipulate people to benefit her own situation and those she cares about (who can blame her?) it's clear that even at such a young age, she's a genuinely good girl who wants to help others and do good in the world, even if she's too young to realize it yet. Not unlike her parents, really. I think we'll be searching a long time before we find another 1st-grade aged character as awesome as Anya.

We need to normalize criticizing our favorite works, pointing out shortcomings in representation while simultaneously celebrating how far that representation has come. I’ll go first.
The Riordanverse (Percy Jackson and its spin-offs) is hands-down one of the best examples of mainstream queer representation for kids. It was probably the biggest formative element of my early queer journey, and I am so grateful for everything Rick Riordan has done for the community. I will continue to support him and his works with all of my heart.
That being said, he has a problem with squeezing his representation into the very last pages of the book, confirmed but not explored. We have three confirmed queer relationships involving demigods:
Nico and Will, confirmed in the last chapter of the series
Piper and Shel, confirmed on the very last page of The Burning Maze.
Magnus and Alex, confirmed in the last chapter of the series (they did kiss a bit earlier)
P.S. I forgot about Lavinia until just before posting, but her entire lesbianism also is introduced and concluded in the span of about a page.
As you can see, it’s extremely consistent. Like I said, these are the only three examples of queer teenage relationships over Riordan’s five series, and they all happen right at the end. We also find that most of the straight pairings (Percy/Annabeth, Frank/Hazel, Jason/Piper, Tyson/Ella, and even things like Hedge/Mellie are confirmed in the middle of the series and given room to grow our at least be referenced back to.
It’s unclear whether this was a conscious or unconscious decision. Perhaps Riordan felt constrained by his publisher. Perhaps he was afraid that he didn’t have the proper background knowledge to accurately write the details of a queer relationship. Both of these are understandable and valid, if a bit disappointing, and I would much rather that he wrote them as he did than not at all.
However…
The good news is that it seems like he’s trying to fix it! He sprinkled in enough of Will and Nico in the first book of the sequel series Trials of Apollo for me to forgive him for their lackluster confirmation in Heroes of Olympus. But then he surprised us all by making Nico and Will two of the five main characters on the Trials of Apollo’s finale (The Tower of Nero), and I can tell you that the fandom ate it up!
But in case that wasn’t enough, soon after the release of The Tower of Nero, Riordan announced The Sun and the Star, now set for release this May! In this book, Nico and Will are the protagonist and deuteragonist, meaning the story will be entirely focused around them! And just to make sure Riordan absolutely knows what he’s doing, he’s decided to co-write it with a gay author Mark Oshiro to make sure they can represent the characters accurately!
And… and the best part… Riordan has done his fair share of novellas and short stories, and ever since the announcement I had assumed that that’s what this was, but no! It’s a full-length book with 480 pages! To compare, that’s strangely enough the exact same page count as The Tower of Nero! I’m so blown away by how much Riordan has gone above and beyond with this book, and I’m insanely excited for it. Sorry this turned into The Sun and the Star propoganda, I didn’t know that the publication date was so close or how long it was until just now.
Anyway, where I’m going with this is that I have extreme respect for a creator who’s willing to listen to feedback from the kinds of people he is writing about and constantly grow from those mistakes! He’s still by far my favorite author of all time. Love you, Uncle Rick!

Wizards Of Waverly Place - Family Business
Tumblr media
So, guess what favourite sit-com of my childhood I have rewatched together with @hamliet?
Wizards of Waverly Place has always had a special place in my heart, but by rewatching it I have realized it is better written than I thought...
Of course, it is unapologetically a kids' show + a parody, so there are not overly intricated plotlines nor incredibly deep psychological explorations. It is sometimes silly with no shame. Moreover, I think 1 specific plotline (Stevie's) and some character moments (Justin's) could have been better handled.
That said, it has a great thematic heart which offers many touching moments together with hilarious characterization and honestly brilliant worlbuilding ideas. I really really love the tongue in cheeck worldbuilding of this series. It takes all the most common fantasy tropes and re-frames them in the context of an American family drama. The feeling is that of a discounted fantasy world, which is perfect as the set of very mundane problems like... how can I cheat at school? Or how can I have a guy fall for me?
The result is a series which pokes fun at Harry Potter, Twilight, Monster Hunter, but also at Romeo And Juliet, The Addams Family, The Devil Wears Prada and much more.
Here are some thoughts on the main themes + characters.
FAMILY - THE MAIN THEME
Wizards of Waverly Place is a show about family. In particular:
It tells the story of a family of wizards
It's set in the Waverly Substation - the family sandwich shop
This premise and this set are used to drive home the theme. The Substation itself may be secondary to the main plot, but it is still key in several episodes. Thematically, it is the home of the Russos and it represents the family ideals of sticking together, despite it all.
All being mostly magic, which is both a blessing and a curse for the Russo family. On the one hand it is a secret that binds the 3 siblings, as it lets them go through exciting adventures together. On the other hand only one of them can keep their powers in the end, which makes them all competitors for the same prize.
With the Wizard Competition in the background, we go through several episodes and plotlines, which explore different family dynamics:
DJ who uses magic to mind control his parents and do what he wants
Hugh Normous, who is happily adopted in his family of Giants
Ronald Longcape Jr, who has a legacy of Evil to honor
Stevie who chooses her powers over her beloved brother and ruins their relationship
Felix, a delinquent who turns a new leaf and discovers himself the descendant of the greatest wizard of all times
Up until the family of our protagonists, which itself has been shattered by magic.
Jerry, the father and head of the family, is the winner of his generation's family competition. Still, he gives up magic to stay with his mortal wife Theresa and they have Justin, Alex and Max (the main characters). Jerry also chooses to give his powers to his brother Kelbo, which leaves their sister Meghan with a grudge. Jerry, Kelbo and Meghan are never able to repair their bond and the risk for Justin, Max and Alex is to repeat their story. After all:
Justin is the lawful star student who is expected to inherit the power (Jerry)
Alex is the artsy lazy delinquent who often acts selfishly (Meghan)
Max is the weird airhead, who is difficult to understand (Kelbo)
So, will the Russo siblings repeat the previous generation's mistakes or will they keep their family bond intact throughout the Wizard Competition?
ALEX AND JUSTIN - THE BEATING HEART OF THE STORY
Tumblr media
Alex and Justin are respectively the protagonist and deuteragonist, with their bond being the most important one of the series. Superficially, they are opposites:
Alex is an underachiever, impulsive and a rule breaker. She often uses magic selfishly and ends up in trouble
Justin is a hard-worker, lawful and a stick in the mud. He studies hard for the wizard competition and likes following rules
And yet, they are deep down the same, as they are both jealous of the other:
Alex is jealous of Justin's academic successes and is tired of being compared to him. Initially, she thinks she can't compete with him and barely tries
Justin is jealous of Alex , who is loved by their parents, despite her flaws. He sees her as the family little girl and believes that if he were not perfect, others would love him less than her
Deep down, they are both unsure of who they are and crave recognition. Still, they really have to learn from the other:
Alex must grow more responsible and put in the effort, like Justin
Justin must try new things and even break the rules for others' sake, like Alex
This is why their relationship becomes key for both of their developments. On the one hand Alex keeps getting into trouble with magic. On the other hand Justin comes to her rescue and helps her out. In this way, Alex learns from her mistakes and Justin gets to gain life experiences. At the same time, they show each other they care. Alex can openly rely on Justin and Justin can step in as the protective big brother. They usually get on each other's nerves and bicker, but in these moments they know the other cares.
This is their initial dynamic, which slowly changes as they both grow. This growth happens also because of important romantic bonds.
Justin and Juliet - Moving on
Justin and Juliet's story is just Romeo and Juliet told in reverse, where Romeo gets the chance to overcome his flaw and Juliet is a vampire (queen).
Justin and Juliet's story starts with their love solving the feud between their 2 families' sandwich shops
It goes on with Juliet's (first) "death". The two lovers end up trapped and Justin (Romeo) convinces Juliet to have herself mind-controlled by an evil mummy to survive the rise of the sun. However, Alex arrives 5 minutes later to free Justin. Just like in the tragedy, if Justin had just waited nothing would have happened
Here it comes Justin and Juliet's reunion, which soon becomes a second and more final separation. Juliet loses her vampire powers and grows old, so she urges Justin to move on from her
Justin takes some time, but finally falls for another girl. He starts dating Rosie. Rosie is a twist on Rosaline, Romeo's first love interest (here she is the second), who is the archetype of the classical angelic woman. Well, Rosie is literally an angel, but an angel of darkness and she influences Justin to join the dark side :P. Eventually, though, Rosie and Justin's love redeems them. Still, Justin chooses to let Rosie go, as she needs to fulfill her role as an angel and to look over mortals
Finally, Justin meets Juliet again, as she is mind controlled by the demon Gorog (basically Satan). Juliet is once again possessed by a malicious creature and Justin is once again asked to join the dark side for love. Still, he is able to resist this time and together with his siblings he defeats Gorog and reunites with Juliet
Metaphorically, Justin's journey is clear. He needs to learn that sometimes no matter how much he tries, bad things happen and he isn't getting what he wants. He tries hard to be a hero, but only ends up losing Juliet. Later on, he is so scared to lose the girl he loves again that he gives up his morals. So, he has to accept sometimes loss can't be helped. That said, if he keeps on trying and is loyal to his principles and to others, life will find a way to reward him. He just has to make the right moral choice in the end.
Alex and Mason - Putting in the effort
Alex and Mason are an inversion of Beauty and Beast. In the Disney Fairy Tale, Beauty changes the Beast in a beautiful Prince. Here, Alex (Beauty) has to accept Mason (Beast) for who he is. A Werewolf.
Alex and Mason meet and fall in love. Still, Alex gets annoyed by Mason's drawings of dogs (an early hint to Mason's werewolf nature). She gets embarassed by them and charms Mason to become his new Muse. Things get awry as Mason can only think about drawing Alex, which results in their relationship getting compromised. Eventually, Alex accepts Mason's strange art and the two move forward in their relationship
Alex discovers Mason is a Werewolf, but the 2 break up over Mason's instinctual declaration of love to Juliet. Mason doesn't love Juliet and his words are once again the result of his werewolf nature Alex struggles to understand. The following confusion leads to Mason turning into a wolf and leaving
Alex finds Mason and saves him in what is a Beauty and Beast call back. Still, Mason is stuck as a half wolf and Alex is embarassed. Before she can have him back as fully human, she has to accept his beast part
Alex drops out from the wizard competition, which means she and Mason can't be together, as it would be too dangerous. Still, they love each other and Alex decides to give the competition another try to stay together with Mason
Alex gets back into the competition, but a beast tamer called Chase keeps flirting with her and symbolically brings out the Beast in Mason (jealousy). Alex dislikes this side of Mason and breaks up with him
Eventually, Alex and Mason meet again and realize they still have feelings for each other, so they choose to get back together despite their respective flaws
The point of Alex and Mason's story is that a perfect Prince Charming does not exist. If Alex wants to be in a real relationship, she should accept the other's flaws, find compromises and finally put in some effort. She can't turn the beast into a prince, but must become herself a wizard to stand beside the werewolf.
In other words, Justin and Alex's developments are opposite. Justin learns he can't always get what he wants through sheer effort and Alex discovers that a little effort is needed to reach a goal.
GIVE ME A MAX
Tumblr media
Max's development is less fleshed out than his siblings', but it is still there. If Alex and Justin compete over the role of favourite child, Max is definately the family unfavourite. He is the odd one out. As he himself says, he is not as clever as Justin nor as devious as Alex. Everybody compares him to them and sets up a standard he can't reach.
His journey, then, has him find his own path through two opposite love interests:
The first one is a girl, who is exactly like him. Still, he lies to her and loses her
The second one (Talia) is his complete opposite. Once again, he lies out of fear of losing her.
Eventually, Max comes clean to Talia and they realize their complementarity is something that enriches them, rather than an obstacle.
At the same time, Max shows he can be just as smart as his siblings. He briefly takes the lead in the Wizard Competition and saves Alex and Justin in the final battle against Gorog. Even in the final Wizard Tournament, he performs rather well. He doesn't need to be someone else. He has his own set of talents that make him unique.
HARPER - THE FOUND SISTER
Tumblr media
True, there are only 3 Wizards in the Russo family, but Harper clearly steps in as another sister to Alex, Justin and Max.
Harper is Alex's best friend and the first human who is revealed the Russos' secret. With time, she gets more and more involved in the family dynamics until Alex openly calls her a sister and Jerry and Theresa adopt her.
Harper is Alex's moral pet and she is the one who brings out the troublemaker's most selfless and heroic traits. She is also the one who trusts Alex the most among all the characters. Justin represents Alex's bond to the wizard world and her biological family. Harper instead represents Alex's bond to the human world and her found family.
Still, Harper is not a sister to only Alex, but also to Max and Justin. Her relationship with Justin, especially, is nicely fleshed out and developed. She initially crushes on him pretty hard and slowly starts to move on, as she grows close to Zeke (Justin's best friend). Eventually, she becomes Zeke's girlfriend and this development marks a substantial change in her and Justin's dynamic.
This shift is shown in Moving On, one of my favourite episodes. Justin is still fixed on Juliet and refuses to go out with other girls. Harper, then, asks Alex to transform her into Juliet, so that she can convince Justin to let go. The end result is that Harper ends up in a date with Justin, which is her childhood dream come true. Eventually, though, Harper reveals herself and convinces Justin to move on. The whole scene is framed as both Harper letting go of Justin and Justin accepting Harper's advice to meet new girls. By the end of it, their dynamic becomes that of a pair of siblings. There is love, but it is familial.
Finally, Harper's relationship with Zeke is what drives Justin to tell his best friend the family secret. This in itself is an important moment in Alex and Justin's foiling:
Alex reveals the truth to Harper pretty early on. She does so as proof of their friendship, even if it is an important violation of the wizard rules. Alex shows she is determined to do what is morally right pretty early on. No matter if it can be damaging for her
Justin reveals the truth to Zeke towards the end. He is initially strongly opposed to it, as he and Alex have fallen behind in the competition precisely for exposing wizardly. However, by seeing how the family secret is ruining both the relationship between Alex and Harper and that between Zeke and Harper, he chooses to bring Zeke into the loop
In short, Harper is a key character for both Alex and Justin's developments and becomes the second daughter of the Russo family.
GENERATION XEROX - THE BIGGEST TWIST OF THE SERIES
Tumblr media
As the series goes on, Alex and Justin's dynamic starts to change:
Alex grows more responsible and becomes better at using magic for which she has a natural disposition. Not only that, but her heroic traits start to surface more and more, especially when her loved ones (Justin, Harper and Mason) are involved
Justin starts showing his jealousy and his selfish side more. He realizes Alex needs him less and that he is not always the best among his siblings. On the contrary, he too messes up and does so royally
So, Alex shows her positive traits, while Justin displays his flaws. The Final Wizard Competition is built on this.
Initially, the viewers are bound to believe the final round focuses on Alex's development. After all, the episode starts with Alex performing a selfless act for the family. Later on, she quickly falls behind in points and then she convinces Justin and Max to leave the competition to help Harper and Zeke, which results in them all losing their powers. So, it is apparently Alex's duty to fix things, so that she can prove she is good enough to be the family wizard. Except this is really not true.
It turns out the disqualification is really a test for Justin (and Max) to forgive Alex. That is because Alex has already finished her development by the end. She has proven she is selfless at heart, when it counts. Not only that but she has saved the world and her family multiple times already. The one falling behind is really Justin. He is the one struggling to accept his siblings may be better than him at magic. He is the one who risks to break the family.
This is the real twist of the series. Initially, viewers are tricked to believe Justin is Jerry and Alex is Meghan. However, it becomes clear by the end that everything is not what it seems:
Alex has her father's big heart. Jerry has to give up magic for Theresa, while Alex has to win the competition for Mason. Moreover, she always prioritizes her family, even if it goes against her interests or the rules
Justin can be selfish, like his aunt. Meghan resents Jerry because he chooses Kelbo over her. In her eyes, this means her hard work is never aknowledged by her siblings. Similarly, Justin is the one who puts in the most effort in magic and wants this investment to pay off
So, Justin is tested to see if he can take a different path from his aunt. He succeeds and after some struggle the competition is resumed. By this point, Alex and Justin's difference becomes clear:
Alex is bad at theory, but she is great at practical magic. Not only that, but she racks up points in the second part of the competition because it focuses on magic used in the second part of the series. By then, Alex has become better at magic and less dependent on Justin
Justin is great at theory, but falls behind Alex when it comes to applying magic. He takes the lead in the first part of the tournament because it covers magic in early episodes, where his help was asked by Alex more
In the end, Alex performs better than Justin, but goes back to help him, which results in Justin's technical win. Once again, the narrative asks Justin which kind of person he is gonna become. Will he choose the wizard power or his bond with his sister? This is the same choice Stevie had to make btw. She chooses the powers and leaves her brother behind. Justin instead chooses what's right. He admits Alex was better than him and gives her the powers, so that she can be with Mason.
Alex proves her talent and shows she has more than enough heart to be the family wizard. Justin recognizes his limits, but sticks to what's right and is rewarded with full wizardly and his dream job at Wiztech. All 3 siblings get what they want:
Alex becomes the family wizard. Still, differently from Kelbo she has gained the title through effort and talent. Moreover, she can be with the love of her life
Justin becomes the principal of Wiztech. He leaves the family, just like Meghan. However, his bonds with his siblings are stronger than ever
Max becomes the owner of the Waverly Substation, just like Jerry. He ends up with the most down to heart approach to life, despite being often considered as the most over the top among his siblings. He shows instead he can be practical and smart
HEART, MIND AND BODY
Tumblr media
Alex, Justin and Max's endings mirror their roles as heart, mind and body characters.
Alex is the heart of the family. She fights to keep the family together and when push comes to shove she prioritizes her loved ones. This is why she inherits the family magic. She is the embodyment of the family spirit.
Justin is the mind of the family. His knowledge comes in handy multiple times and he is the one the family goes to when there is some kind of crisis. He becomes a professor, so he can spread his knowledge to other people.
Max is the body of the family. He is often associated with food and fittingly becomes the owner of the Family Business. Not only that, but the sandwich shop is where the Russos' lair is. As it is pointed out several times, the lair is key for wizards. So, Max is entrusted with the physical domain of the Russos' magic. He may not be a wizard, but he is still key for the family.
All together, the 3 siblings make a unit, which is why the most powerful magic in the series is the one they use to defeat Gorog. As professor Crumbs explains, it is a charm, which is possible to perform only by 3 wizards siblings. Given how often wizards families are shattered, it is poignant it is such a rare and powerful spell. The Russos are able to use it because they will always choose each other over magic.

I just wanted to thank you for your metas. I’ve never liked Daemon but could never put my finger on why I didn’t like him. Some of your metas cleared it up for me.
Ok so question. I know you consider Alysane a Mary-Sue, but what about Jaeherys I? I’ve always considered him a Mary-Sur but I wanted to know what you think?
Thank you for the compliment regarding the metas. The Other Dæmon is one of my least faves, and while I don’t like writing about him (with negative asks I feel like I keep repeating myself), I’m glad I could help you express your dislike.
Dæmon Tárg is a decent example of an ASOIAF male Mary Sue in that he steals the spotlight from the protagonist (Rhànyra, and ideally Alicent is the deuteragonist), overpowered (he’s the best/experienced commander, has one of the best dragons and one of the ancestral swords, his men are so loyal to him that they surrender King’s Landing because he was in charge of them a decade ago…what’s this guy’s weakness?), the center of attention (liked or at least tolerated by the sympathetic characters and hated by the unlikable characters, even if they have a good reason for it), irresistible to multiple exceptional women (to the point he takes over their narrative and he’s old enough to be their father), his comeuppance isn’t proportional to his actions, etc.
I can definitely see that Jaehaerys has Sue traits, such as sparring three men at once, being able to kill a much younger man in a trial by combat because he’s so great (but seriously he’s just a scholar, guys! Again where’s the balance), he ordered Elinor Costayne (the only surviving non-Targaryen Black Bride, thus a victim of Targ supremacy) to preach the doctrine of Targ exceptionalism, and apparently the Dornish mourned his death even though he led two armies/4 dragons against them resulting in thousands burning alive. However, we see that when he gets into conflict with Alysanne, she’s consistently in the right. He says there’s no problem with the KL water and building a water system would be too expensive? She serves him a tankard of filthy river water at a council meeting, which persuaded him to clean up the city (even though building roads was supposed to be his big achievement). He says the lords will be reluctant to part with First Night? She sympathizes with the victims and gets him to ban it. He exiles Saera from Westeros saying she’s always been a whore? Alysanne begs to see her (lady you have a fast dragon just go to Lys) after so many of their kids have died. He names Baelon his heir over Rhaenys? Alysanne says a ruler needs a good head and heart, not a cock, and leaves him for a year. I don’t think we’re supposed to agree with Jaehaerys for his stance on women wrt First Night and his family politics, but instead Alysanne. Considering she wondered about joining the silent sisters in her old age, she had fallen out of love with him considering he kept forcing her to bear children against her will (never mind he refused to consummate the marriage early because he feared for her health; F&B and consistent characterization don’t mesh well), and we’re not supposed to see this as a good thing. His cruelty regarding Saera and Daella led to their deaths and exile (Alysanne objects to their treatment and is part of the rift between them); he gets a Hoster Tully-like ending where he’s senile and confuses an attendant for Saera, thinking she’s returned, so clearly he didn’t die with dignity but rather regret (another point against his Suedom, as Dæmon got a heroic death he didn’t deserve). Another point to consider is that Alaric Stark—a fairly sympathetic character, and a relative of our Stark protagonists—never forgave Jaehaerys for his brother’s death, but instead warmed to Alysanne. Considering the main series, we’re not supposed to sympathize with Jaehaerys’ decision to hang the starving mob who killed his Lord of Coin Rego Draz by their entrails; that’s the act of a tyrant, not a just king.
I think it’s pretty telling that many people in fandom were shocked by Jae1’s portrayal in F&B. We were consistently told he was the Targ’s best ruler who reigned peacefully for 50 years of prosperity; F&B shows him as a petty sexist who tortured his wife and daughters and whose best ideas came from Alysanne or Septon Barth. There were some complaints about Alysanne (regarding her lack of a backbone wrt some of his decisions), but not about how spiteful she was (the exception is with Viserra who is so cartoonishly vain I don’t know who I’m supposed to root for in the conflict) nor how other people are responsible for her ideas. I think in comparison with other characters I deemed Sues, Jaehaerys isn’t one because we’re supposed to see him as a flawed person, his flaws are sometimes not put on a pedestal (Dæmon’s faithlessness with willing women is stylish; Jae forcing Alysanne is not), not every sympathetic character likes him (though tbh it comes close), and he gets a fairly humiliating death haunted by regret. He gets more flaws so Alysanne can get her triumphs and tragedies.
Thanks again for the ask and compliments.

Do you mind if I ask your top 10 favorite characters (can be male or female) from all of the media that you loved (can be anime/manga, books, movies or tv series)? And why do you love them? Thanks....
Oh!! What a cool question! Thank you :D
I can't be super precise because I love a lot of characters and don't want to hurt their feelings, but here's who comes to mind. In no particular order:
1. Uncle Iroh from Avatar: the Last Airbender. He's the only one I'm actually definitively saying is in a ranking. He's the best one. I love how unfailingly kind and loving he is, and that he demonstrates the beautiful ability to be silly and simply happy despite all the tragedy he's seen. Of course I also love almost every other character in the show, too, but Iroh is Best.
2. Elodin from The Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss: This man is insane. He is eccentric and opinionated and owns it. He does not give half a fuck what people think of him and cares very, very much about everything else in the world. I want to know everything he knows. He is a trickster god I think.
3. The Cthaeh from The Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss: Same book series as Elodin but god they both deserve their own mentions since the Cthaeh is on another fuckin level from literally everything. No spoilers, but this thing is the absolute coolest monster concept I have ever seen in any form of media.
4. Makenna from The Goblin Wood by Hilari Bell: This was my favorite book as a kid. Makenna is a badass hedgewitch who befriends a goblin named Cogswhallop. She's violently anti-colonialism and definitely a communist. I literally want to name my kid after her. Write characters like Makenna.
5. Boromir from The Lord of the Rings, mostly referring to the Peter Jackson films because FotR is my favorite movie: I love him. I love him I love him. He was the Best Of Men, and everyone else in the Fellowship was some kind of magic so he was the only one who fell victim to the Ring's sway, but he never stopped being a good man with a noble heart.
6. Hua Cheng from Heaven Official's Blessing by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu: God. I love this author and maintain that she's a genius, and I love so many of her characters, but Hua Cheng gets the first honorable mention because he is The Most Unhinged. All my mxtx favorites are unhinged tbh, but Hua Cheng is on another level. He's made a hobby out of self-sacrifice and makes stalking look tragically romantic. He vacillates between sweet, heart-wrenching adoration for one (1) person and top-tier vicious snarkiness for literally anyone else. He is a force of darkness and a shy baby.
7. Zevran from Dragon Age: My favorite game series. My guy. He tries very, very hard to make you think he doesn't have depth but he's actually just a mastermind at deflection and his heart is behind like eighteen million locked doors. He's cheerful! He's not. He's deeply depressed and his loyalty shows up LOUD when you're not emotionally prepared for it. He's possibly the most devoted companion character in the game.
8. Cole from Dragon Age: He is my son. My treasured baby boy. He loves you. I read Asunder before Inquisition came out so girl I shrieked when he was announced as a featuring character.
9. Nezumi from No. 6 by Atsuko Asano: He's a dick. Pretentious deuteragonist goth boyfriend who quotes classical Western poetry, thinks violence is funny until he sees his Soft, Sweet protagonist engage in it, and commands swarms of bees. His dream is to overthrow the dystopian government.
10. Liu Jianghe from Saved the Public Enemy by Mistake by Liu Muqiao: I'm obsessed with this one lately. Shamelessly promoting this manhua on the Bilibili app. He's my profile icon rn. Unhinged. Not sure what he's capable of. Sweet boy. Keeps making it look like he's the bad guy but all of his decisions are specifically engineered to help the main character fix his life. Everyone is confused and this maniac is cheerful and pretty much lives on the brink of death. Please read it guys it literally only has like 6 fics on AO3 and I want to talk to people about it

Coming at you for the character opinion bingo, hit me with the Wondergirls
I already did Nynaeve!
ELAYNE:
Tumblr media
I love Elayne so much and she carries the entire Slog on her plotline's back, no correspondence will be entered into. In her heart of hearts she really just wants to do weird magic science but she is a queen and by the Creator she's going to do a good job of it. She is one of the ONLY PEOPLE IN THE ENTIRE SERIES who meets Rand on his level and gives him useful advice without judgment about what he should do. She is more mature than 95% of the entire cast, particularly about separating out 'how she feels' from 'what she needs to do', but she still does dumb teenage shit because she's nineteen and the world is ending. (I attribute the maturity to the good parenting she clearly got.) She is gonna kiss Aviendha in the show and it is going to be glorious. People who hate (not 'aren't interested in' or 'are bored by' or 'just don't vibe with' but actively hate) Elayne are walking red flags I will block on sight. In a totally illogical crossover, she and Peter Grant could have so much fun together doing magic research.
EGWENE:
Tumblr media
OK, a few of you on here have rights re:Egwene but IN GENERAL this fandom is rabidly obsessed with her (derogatory) and they are all wrong. She is my Ooh Ooh Girl (tm Leigh Butler at Tor), the Flame of Tar Valon, my joyfully ambitious heroine, she isn't always nice or kind or sometimes good but I will go to the mat for her innate sense of justice and desire to do the right thing. It was so important to me as a teenage girl to read about her and see her as a hero and the protagonist of her own plot. She is the deuteragonist of the series, Rand's opposite and foil and first love, we don't talk about what happened to her because I'm still mad. We also don't talk about the whole Gawyn thing because what the fuck, Egwene, what the fuck. Top favourite characters of all time.

so amidst my revamping and long overdue spring cleaning of this blog. a thought occured to me at work which frankly should have come sooner, but the way the series paints naruto’s support system compared to sasukes is just depressing. yes while i do understand that he is the protaganist and sasuke is considered one of the protagonists ( as far as part one is concerned ) while i will argue that eventually sasuke is a deuteragonist and antagonist. though it’s made a point even in the beginnings of part one that nartuo had the likes of iruka, in the anime the friendship of shikamaru, choji, and kiba is another one. though by that point this is after the massacare where sasuke isn’t interested in friendship, being coddled, or anything remotley as to what naruto has. naruto eventually gets jiraiya. sasuke by this point had slowly built a family with team seven, he cared for them enough to put himself in harms way. nearly giving his life for both naruto and sakura on a dozen occasions. yet it isn’t anything complete, or something i feel sasuke could compare. not that i myself or he would be comparing, but simply. naruto had all these people. even on occasion as indicated in the anime ( not the manga ) that hiruzen sometimes showed up and checked on him. sasuke is seemingly left to his own devices. it’s all part of the story and i understand that, but there is a scene in the final fight between him and naruto where it shows all of those naruto has touched by his sunshine-like demeanor there aiding him in that final rasengan ( not literally there but you know what i mean ) and sasuke had no one. it’s intentional because sasuke had cut all ties he had and even in his youth wasn’t very well liked. it just breaks my heart because none of them ever truly understood sasuke. he’s only seen as a traitor who abandoned the village. a teenager with a nasty attitude who wanted to see his home burn for what it stripped from him. none of them can even fathom it or understand. is it any wonder why he doesn’t want to stay in konoha even after naruto brings him back? after he only returns for him? because he trusts only naruto? this isn’t to say he doesn’t feel any feelings towards sakura, but it’s all muddied and twisted under layers of anger. as for kakashi? his stance is very conflicted with his former mentor. but team seven is and will always be important to sasuke.

For people with actual culture and the ability to actual appreciate art and read critically, Vampire in the Garden is a beautiful, heart-felt take on classic star-crossed lovers via the medium of music in a painterly, evocative setting of the decaying culture of Russia’s slide from tsarist decadence into militant communist utilitarianism.
Tumblr media
Where Humans have retreated behind tall concrete walls and use industrial technology, military might, and hard labour to survive the onslaught of blood-thirsty vampires and the cold of winter, the vampires live amidst decaying palaces and mansions awash in the lingering remnants of art, music, and history as their lower classes lose their minds to their hunger and their base instincts, starving for blood. Among them, our protagonists are both outcasts; a human girl disillusioned with the bleak and joyless life of the stronghold desperate for meaning, and the Queen of vampires, equally disheartened by the meaningless brutality and decline of her people and burdened by the tragedy of her lost love, who meet in the dark of night, both of their yearnings for more connected by the simple act of mournful song as they travel together to search for a paradise where they can live together, human and vampire and appreciate music and love in peace. Frankly; this movie is beautiful. The aesthetic of post-revolutionary industrial Russia feels under-utilized in similar media, and the depiction of the snowy reaches and dilapidated mansions as both harsh and deadly but also beautiful and serene comes across clearly between the more gritty struggles of human and vampire existence. Music and visuals are both pristine and evocative, and there’s plenty of vivid imagery reflecting the narrative.
The explicit and central homosexuality of the protagonists as both women-loving-women is integral to the story and serves to enhance the Shakespearean tale of love, war, and tragedy as their struggles to express themselves clash in parallel with the rigid expectations of their societies; a queen expected to marry and breed to continue her imperial bloodline, and a girl expected to surrender personal desires to the uncaring military machine.
No slouches either; the antagonists and deuteragonists of the film are no less ripe for dissection; men and women so wholly committed to the ideology of their regime that reconsideration is impossible; who have given their lives and their love to the cause and would sooner die than be broken by the weight of their sacrifices bearing down on them even as the lies unravel and reality confronts them head on.
I’d absolutely recommend Vampire in the Garden to anyone looking for anime with more artistic integrity and cinematic grandeur than mainstream fare, but it’s absolutely essential that it’s watched as one piece! Despite Netflix’s format and advertising, this is not a television series with 5 episodes! This is a feature-length movie cut into 5 parts! Please watch them all together!

On the topic of Gundam Gays it’s extremely funny how quickly this incredibly well established franchise shot right into its lesbian engagement and then immediately shot down the first blush deniability for it I’m the kind of yuri bait enthusiast who is quite content to simmer in the Unspoken Text and veiled longings and plausible deniability and am wary to overly criticize it when it’s not overstaying its welcome
But to have Gundam of all things hit you in literally episode 1 with “It’s 2022 in Space and you’re still homophobic? That’s cringe.” is incredible.

My #1 post of 2022
If the gayness can be denied it can just as easily be called queerbaiting. Text (and subtext) is less impactful and meaningful than action, even in the right direction. I think if gay people say it's not good enough isn't that an indication that it isn't good enough or enough for them to feel represented?
No.
There’s been a concept in social media activism that the primary perceived value of queer content in media is how loudly it demonstrates inclusion of a particular identity, and a lot of popular media gets judged solely on this aspect, like it’s checking off a tickbox for binary approval.
A kiss has been chosen by many of these circles to be the most concrete binary proof you can have for a character’s queer sexuality, but putting aside the fact that many identities don’t benefit from that at all; (theoretically a bi person would have to kiss 2 different genders to ‘prove’ themselves this way, why would a trans person kissing anyone prove anything, asexual or aromantic obviously inapplicable, etc) w
It’s simply incorrect that text is less impactful than “action”, given that media is Text. The Text is what comprises its “action” and what it’s statement of intent is. A kiss is not action, a kiss is Text. A gay character that does kiss or meets whatever satisfaction the audience deems for “representation” is still a creation of Text as much as a gay character that never kisses anyone. There’s no separation there. This wholesale disregard of theme and meaning of text and subtext in fiction and instead only approving media-friendly headline screenshots is one of the greatest tragedies of modern popular culture.
Treating the ‘undeniable’ existence of a queer character as “action” and “representation’ and not examining the actual context of their inclusion and what the story says about their identity, their lives, and their experiences is how you get Disney’s First Gay Character popping up in the news twice a year- it’s become more important for the headlines to State that you have one than for them to actually be important or meaningfully written, or for the story to have anything to say about the character or their lives. At this point of popular social media understanding, Queerbaiting simply does not mean what people have begun to use it to describe. Queerbaiting was intended to refers to deliberate marketing attempts to accrue viewership by over-promising the presence or importance of queer content to Bait in queer viewers hoping to be included. The key part of Queerbaiting is the intentional misdirection here, and because of that there is a very important distinction between queer subtext that is created to build intentional undertones and that which is included specifically to tease and entice viewers with the promise of more.
Many anime shows that people accuse of queerbaiting are doing exactly the opposite; in the case of Flip Flappers the overwhelming Text of the story is largely and centrally focused on the burgeoning sexuality of a young girl as she grows up and realizes that what her heart desires may conflict with expectations set by herself, her family, and society at large. That remains true through to the end of the story where she makes a breakthrough in her understanding of herself and her place in life and her sexuality is a major part of that.
A kiss is not at all required for this, but because there isn’t one people somehow become convinced that the story is “baiting” them desptie the actual meat of the story itself being fundamentally about being queer. Now, there’s definitely room for subjective differences in appreciation here, especially taking more Yuri works as a whole (particular Slice of Life), in which many of them do place their queer undertones as a less central tenet that aren’t deeply explored. I’m not saying that you as an individual can’t feel that you’re not satisfied without a more substantial story; but it doesn’t mean these stories have Failed in their role of Representation; they still have value and purpose whether they meet that shallow criteria or not. And it doesn’t mean that they aren’t Real and these characters aren’t quite obviously gay to anyone paying even the slightest attention.
What I’m actually hearing most of the time is that people consider the capital r Representation buzzword to tick off a box of “HAS LESBIAN” to be more important to them than actually reading a Story about gay people that has something meaningful to say; Add further to this deeper disqualifying factors restricting death, tragedy, “unhealthy” relationships, etc. And you quickly begin to cut down the number of stories you accept to only those which portray a superficial, consumer-friendly veneer of queerness.
This is in itself a sanitization of Queer identity that doesn’t celebrate or represent anyone; it’s selling an idea of Queerness that is clean, palatable, easily accessed.
That’s simply not enough to satisfy me, and it shouldn’t be for you either.

Someone told me to do an emoji ask with Lili in the "psyche of nut" discord so-
🏳️‍🌈 - Bisexual? Partially because I think I'm projecting onto her. She gives me the kind of vibe that she wouldn't care about gender. But people she thinks looks cool, she'd definitely try to get near and possibly like.
💌 - Her love language is "Words of Affirmation." The more verbal reassurances she gets the more she believes it.
💔 - She does not have a good relationship with her mother. Personally I believe that due to her already aggressive nature, this may also stem from that influence in her life.
🧸 - Whenever Lili gets sick, Truman will tell her stories until she falls asleep.
🪀 - She doesn't eat vegetables. Not because of the taste, but the fact that at one point, she would have been able to hear them.
💤 - Lili gets sleepy when the sun goes down and only gets up with the sun. This results in VERY early days she enjoys during summer, and long nights of cuddling up to her dad before proper "bed time" and she gets carried to her actual room to do her nightly chores.
✨ - RazLili~ They are the sweet childhood couple who I love and I want to think that they just have a relationship where they'll always find one another again even if they're split up for a time.
🔪 - Chops and Lili. There was one mention of Chops possibly having a relationship with Lili on her Campster page and some people took that really seriously.
🎃 - Lili is actually really afraid of Frogs. She hates the noises that they make. Also, Linda may have done a bit more damage than initially thought with Lili's aversion. (this is more for silly ideas, but I also think she'd hate the fact they eat pollinators.)
📦 - My blorbo. My skrunkly. Share with me all of your emotions. Give me emotional catharsis with you. I love you with my whole heart. I want to adopt you.
📢 - She's the opposite of Razputin in every single way. He wants to interact with people yet doesn't know how; she doesn't want any people, but was probably taught how. Raz comes from a rundown circus where he probably got used to learning layouts of land; Lili is a rich girl who probably only knows places by "how long they take by jet ride." Razputin controls the sea; She speaks to the earth. He's the protagonist and she's the deuteragonist of the series. They work hand in hand and yet not all the time.
🧨- The time we don't get to spend with her. Okay more so- the fact she doesn't want relationship with other people. At Whispering Rock I get, considering all the kids have their own stories and side plots that you can seek out and see play out. But in PN2 we are at the Motherlobe. Lili is a descendant of the Psychic Seven and Truman's daughter. There is SO MUCH to work with there. We know she probably knows the names of most of the agents (like calling Jared by his first name). And then all of a sudden- She doesn't want to know who the new kids are. She's just worried about her dad. Understandable for a kid. SEVERELY understandable given her age and sideplot if you actually go look for it, but it's VERY hard to find Lili between each of the plots and there's no callback to optional scenes (ala "When are you gonna shut up and kiss me?" with the first one being optional between getting the note from Ford and going to Sasha to train and the required one before the finale calling back to it) with the only thing being "I'm his girlfriend!" in reference to if you watch the PN1 recap. PLUS she's supposed to be really good friends with Dogen, knowing him before he came to Whispering Rock because of the family relationship. So why is there nothing about SAM!? Surely something between the Zanottos and Booles could have been asked about during the pancakes scene when Raz was asking about family.
💬 - Oh so many good ones. But it's only ONE. Do I be truthful or pick out an underrated one? Hmm... "Sorry! I'm just so excited! Since you showed up, Raz, things are so much more exciting! Sinister death plots! Mad scientists! Hideous monsters!"
🔔 - Lili deserves to interact with more people than just her circle of possible friends (Raz, some campers, some interns) and enemies (some interns, Original characters). I want her to have acquaintances in some of the agents. I want her to look up to some of the agents as heroes. I want her to somehow be begrudgingly or sickeningly sweet to those who help fund the Psychonauts. I want her to have some relationship with the Aquato family.
🔊 - I have several Lili AUs with several songs that pertain to her in the AUs, but if I had to say about her actually... I think I'm going to have to do the same route I went with using Raz. With doing songs that are reminding me of them fiercely, but are about different relationships they have.
"Bad Reputation" - Joan Jett and the Blackhearts (Lili losing light for the Psychonauts and becoming more surly) "Ring of Fire" - Johnny Cash (Lili about Raz) "Take Good Care of my Baby" - Carole King (Lili and Truman (partially because being a Psychonaut IS a dangerous career and- he'd want to make sure she'd be okay over himself))

The astonishing world building of Hunter x Hunter and its problem with the 'show don't tell'
Alright guys. I binge-watched the 2011 Hunter x Hunter anime and I read all the 390 available chapters of the manga, so here comes my personal trash take on it. Please be aware that there might be some minor spoilers for the series.
Tumblr media
Let's cut to the chase: overall, I really enjoyed the series, just as most people who get to experience it. There's a reason if HxH is so popular and Togashi is one of the most loved mangaka in Japan. But let's proceed step by step.
Like many shōnen of the 90s-00s, HxH starts off with a slow, introductory arc. You'll have to get through the first 10-15ish episodes before getting a glimpse of the bright originalities this series has to offer. It gradually gets better episode after episode, but it's in the third arc (Yorknew City) that HxH really starts shining. From that point on, it's simply great.
What is the biggest strength of this show? The astonishing world building and the totally unexpected twists and turns of the plot, something extremely rare in shōnen manga (believe me, I've read a lot of those).
Togashi outlined a world that has nothing to envy to MANY epic fantasy series. He's not afraid to go into geopolitics, laws, subcultures, history, professions and their related skills...
Every character has their own mentality, often tied to their personal background, which leads to complex and unique relationships between people. And you never, never know how the story might evolve.
Normally, shōnen arcs are pretty easy to predict, at least to their major plot points: there is a main villain that will face the protagonist, their second and third strongest allies, who will fight the second and third strongest associates of the main character, and so on. According to the premise of the arc, you can often guess what the focus of the climax will be. Except HxH doesn't play by these rules. A tertiary character that was barely introduced may take an unexpected decision that will sway the curse of the arc. A key character may fall much sooner than expected, maybe because they caught a disease. A strong villain may have a change of heart unrelated to the protagonist's actions. The protagonist may not even be part of the arc. An unannounced natural calamity may change the stage of the foreseen fight. Anything is possible in HxH, which makes this world feel awfully real. For that alone, you should watch the show.
But the manga also has some prominent issues. First of all, the main character, Gon, is one of the weakest shōnen protagonists I've ever come across.
Tumblr media
This is surprising, considering that not only Togashi is more than capable of building amazing characters, but the main character of one of his early works, Yusuke from Yu Yu Hakusho, is carefully designed and full of subtle facets.
And yet Gon is... a rip-off of Goku, from the original Dragon Ball. Both in design and personality. I know that many won't agree, and that's why this is just my trash take, but I honestly don't understand why Togashi decided to go for such a flat, uninteresting protagonist for such a rich and complex story. Or maybe it's exactly because of it? Is Gon supposed to be a breath of fresh air as we try to navigate the complexity of the manga? I'm not sure, but as a results, Gon's parts account for the most boring parts of the series. Thankfully in HxH the protagonist is not remotely as prominent as in standard shōnen (he's not even present in the latest arc!).
This is opposed by a masterfully crafted antagonist, Hisoka.
Tumblr media
The guy is terribly original and creepy. He's quite explicitly shown to draw sexual pleasure in grooming and then fighting his opponents. Even kids. This is sick af and very bold for this genre.
The deuteragonist (Killua), and other important characters such as Kurapika and the Phantom Troupe also make for amazing storylines.
The second major issue of HxH is intrinsically bound to its major strength.
While reading, it's possible you'll ask yourself a question: is there such a thing as too much world building?
My personal opinion is that no, there isn't, but it all depends on how the wb is delivered.
I'm a big fan of the 'show don't tell' concept, which is a way of delivering information (or even actions and introspection) without spelling it out for the reader/watcher.
I'll make a practical example utilizing two popular epic fantasy series, Lord of the Rings and A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones). They both have extensive and meticulous wb (LOTR probably more than ASOIAF), but they go about it in very different ways, at least in the books of the main series. Tolkien introduces a character, and then spends five pages listing their background, their ancestry, weapons of choice, major achievements, mentions in other books, etc. Martin introduces a character and he gives you the same information by disseminating them in the way they talk, how we see them fight, maybe a fleeting gaze they exchange with another character (which means that you'll have to read into things to infer stuff, and some other things are left to the interpretation of the reader). The latter approach is the show don't tell.
Anime and manga, being visual media, usually rely on this concept, some more than others. HxH gradually abandons it until it almost completely disappears. Here's an example in one of the recent manga chapters, so SPOILER. (you don't have to read, having a look at the page is enough):
Tumblr media
This is... waaaaay too much for a manga that's already heavy in dialogue as it is. You would think that this is crucial to the plot but no, not really. This is the personal reasoning of a very secondary character that may never come into play. And this style is often used for battles too, which slows the action down and makes it often overly complicated. It's curious because this wasn't the case in Yu Yu Hakusho.
I don't know whether this tendency increased because of Togashi's poor health condition that forced him to take several long breaks, to the point we may never see the end of HxH. It's possible that he wasn't in shape to draw and switched to more text, I'm not sure.
Either way, I still enjoy HxH A LOT, I think Togashi is a great writer that certainly stands out compared to most of his colleagues, and I wish him the best. I hope he gets well enough to finish his opera, or at least to live his life peacefully. ❤️
If you're still reading, thank you very much for indulging me and my stupid review! 😁 Now go read HxH, you won't regret it!

My thoughts
Long text and it's just my opinion, xd, sorry for the writing, I'm not american
Well, it all started in January 2023, when Inside Job was canceled. I was pretty devastated and remained fandomless for like 6 months, until August 2023
Inside Job had a special place in my heart, the characters, the cast, the plots… Pretty weird I found it by searching Family Guy on Netflix. What pissed me off is that Netflix renewed it and then canceled it despite renewing it. It just makes me so angry. There was so much hype, so much potential… And it’s gone. Xd. Anyways, after seeing some fanart I found what I would consider my Inside Job’s replacement: Digman! I’m serious, this thing has somehow managed to fill that Inside Job hole in my heart, even though those might be shoes too big to fill for this series. Anyways, Digman! is what I would consider a mediocre series, which is way higher than promedium. Inside Job is an excellent series, where characters get developpement, plots work well and bring stuff to the story and the characters interact with each other since the main cast is quite large. In Digman! quite the opposite happens, the main cast seems to only be made out of the protagonist and the deuteragonist, like Inside Job but at least there Brett and Reagan talked with other people than themselves. In Digman! most of the time is either Rip or Saltine talking, also Saltine isn’t that much of a character since she’s so flat in terms of personality, like, you’re the deuteragonist, why don’t we know your family name. Reagan is so relatable at some point and she gets a great developpement through the series, even in the first part. Rip on the other hand get poor developpement and at last, he only changes a bit for the most stupid reason: he believes that anyone who bothers him is caring for him, which is kinda dumb to be honest since he’s literally told that he’s always wrong and others know what’s best for him. Now to the deuteragonists, there is Brett for Inside Job and Saltine for Digman!. Brett is such a loveable character that is so relatable, he’s a yesman, he’s hot, he has a tragic past, yet he’s still a nice guy. He got a great developpement through the show as he realized he doesn't have to change to please people and that his opinion matters, healing a bit of his family trauma at part 2 and learning to let go of his best friend just so she can be happy. Then we have Saltine, please what even are you. Saltine has by most people the most attractive design but according to them it is just because she doesn’t fit the artstyle and I don’t even understand what that even means. She’s such a flat character that even the support characters have more personality than her! She barely does anything on the series apart from saying the obvious, and triggering Rip’s traumas in ep 2 for some reason. The only time she played an important role was in episode 4 where she met Trisket, another archeologist assistant and they both became friends, which is nice and it was the moment where she had the most personality somehow. But overall, the only thing she does is state obvious things like saying that exploitation is bad and that snakes are dangerous, which is kinda pointless because there’s no need to explain that. I get why Rip seemed so bothered by her in episode 1 because oh my god, she’s kind of obnoxious. We don’t even know her family name! She’s the deuteragonist and we don’t know her family name. The only thing we know from her is that she's a bit of an inventor, she’s a college student, and her parents don’t support her choice of studying archeology, which I understand since what kind of horrible parents name their child after a cracker. This too few compared to Brett whom we know useless stuff about him that at least puts in value his past and personality. But I like both, Inside Job might be canceled, it might never have an end but at least I found something to replace it inside my heart. Something that brought me joy. Something that makes me hype for next season. Something. Digman! might not be the perfect show, but please, give it a chance. Also, whatever will happen in season 2, pls don’t be any romantic, Inside Job already traumatized me so much xd

and on the seventh day of reviewmas I, Fausto, give to thee:
7 lgbt main characters in an incredibly queer manga like holy shit
6 ye olde government agents
5/5 stars best movie of the decade easily. might be the best movie of all time
4 scantily clad teenaged girls (fbi open up! meme)
the 3rd time i read the same book about lawns maybe?
2 high school animes
and a ninja book
…from a guy who still thinks about the naruto series in the year 2023
So i watched a video essay about why being trans is more socially acceptable than being gay in japan and then immediately afterward i stumbled upon Zenbu Kimi no Sei (All Because of You) by Asazuki Norito, a manga so packed full of good trans rep that it might explode that also featured one lesbian relationship that was treated as a bigger deal than a character switching their presented gender from male to female for the first time and getting hit on and then getting clocked by the guys who were hitting on them because of their voice.
But wait! there’s more! a hell of a lot more. the trans rep isn’t even the main point.
the main conflict in the series revolves around the magic gender bending power that some people in this world have. basically if you’ve got this magic power then when ever your heart “throbs” your gender gets bent. most of the time when this happens, the deuteragonist does something the protagonist thinks is cute and we get a lot of “well now i’m a foot shorter and my manly clothes are falling off of me” with the occasional teenaged boy in skimpy girl outfits that magically do not shred.
there’s a little bit too much cheesecake content of the protagonist for my liking, in fact too much cheesecake content in general, but considering like all of the rest of anime and manga and the sexualization of teen and pre teen children that’s way too common in japanese media it’s not that bad.
I guess i could go on about good things in this manga that i liked but honestly i’d recommend just reading it and enjoy the main cast of gender non conforming people being incredibly cool about gender.

Is knb worth watching then 👀 (speaking as a haikyuu lover btw)
I have never seen Haikyuu, so I can't be the judge of which one is better (nor do I want to) but let me tell you what KNB is about and then maybe you can decide for yourself if it's your cup of tea or not: Kuroko no Basket is supposed to be a sports anime about a group of high school boys aiming to become the number one basketball team in Japan. About a few chapters in, though, the author decided to go "fuck it" and lean into whimsy and magical realism, making it a sort-of battle-shonen about...basketball. It is intentional. Many people will tell you it is not "real" basketball, and to that I say I read an interview with the author where he went: that's the point. Or at least, that's what it became as he began developing the characters and the story. It is so buckwild, I absolutely love it.
The plot goes a little like this: Kuroko Tetsuya (our protagonist) aims to teach his ex-teammates from middle school a lesson after an Incident™ broke them up and sent them all to different high schools. Kagami Taiga (our deuteragonist) has returned from America and doesn't think much of Japanese basketball, but all that is about to change when he meets Kuroko, his new teammate. Kuroko is short where Kagami is tall, calm where Kagami is short-tempered, and spectacularly bad at basketball where Kagami is spectacularly good at it. Together, they decide to challenge Kuroko's ex-teammates, and they learn a lot about each other, themselves, and their rivals along the way. You could have googled that, but I just wanted a chance to talk about the blorbos that convinced me to finally have an otp other than Ichi/Hime. The narrative structure of KNB is insane, the story is incredibly character-driven, it has so many glaring flaws but also so many interesting things to say. I can't guarantee you it'll drive you as insane as it drove me, but it has a very special place in my heart and if you agree to play along and see the whimsy as intentional/not take yourself too seriously/meet the series in the middle, I think it's worth giving it a shot.

Status: Series is in progress….
Inspiration: Thank you. Whoever you may be. ♡
Sneak peak:
With a crown on his head and clothed in velvet and silk he pranced down the corridors of the palace to reach the hall in which he ought’s to attend the ball held in honor of the kings birthday. Walking ahead of his personal guards he hummed the melody of the sea shanty he and his brothers used to sing as children that dreamed of becoming pirates while calling themselves the lords of the sea.
With his head kept high and a hand lazily hanging around the belt his sword was attached to, Prince Hyunjin walked past a gigantic mirror that decorated the corridor of his quarter. He was about to walk past the mirror and out of the comfort of the only place he felt at ease in when his eyes caught something glittering and out of place. Stopping in his tracks and turning around with a tilted head he was called by a guard “Your majesty…”, but the man was cut short with a small hand gesture by the prince who made his way back to the mirror.
Standing in front of the piece of glass that reflected whatever happened to be in front of it, the prince intensely looked at his reflection from head to toe. The huge amount of candles that were light up to bring a living to the soulless night caused his attire that was decorated with the finest and purest gold and silver to shine and turn him into the sun of the night.
Once again the guard opened his mouth to call for the prince when a resounding laughter filled the empty halls “A prince that looked like he came straight out of fairytale but I wonder if the little girls reading the story know that the man they wanted was a pirate by heart.”, confused looks were exchanged between the guards before the prince gave his reflection a deep bow followed by jolly giggles and him starting to dance the waltz.
“Oh what a well-mannered handsome pirate!”, the prince laughed imagining himself dancing around the deck of his Anastasia with his dear mates.

A Katsuki Meta
Howdy, I am back on my shit again after Atsushi’s twitter post of Horikoshi’s drafts made me cry for two hours and sleep for three.
Let’s get to it!
Tumblr media
While there is obvious symbolism in this draft of Katsuki letting go of his past self, you have to appreciate just how much planning has been dedicated to this series, and how Horikoshi has managed to take a character that could’ve strictly followed a checklist of stereotypes for a hot headed, short tempered deuteragonist and build him to become just as complex and important as the protagonist.
He kept true to the promise he made when the chapter releases were still in the single digits:
Tumblr media
Katsuki’s character is one of the easiest to mishandle. He was introduced as a bully, and maintained an explosively vile personality throughout a good chunk of the series. His most obvious traits are the marks of a FOIL to Deku, and he could have well stayed that way and still ended up becoming a good pro, with the usual AHA moment that a deuteragonist like him experiences: a moment where he learns that power isn’t everything.
Except he didn’t have a moment, he had several. He was kidnapped, tossed around, ripped to shreds, challenged, loved, trusted, admired, understood and practically reborn. The fact that he’s managed to stay true to himself after everything means he always had the makings of a great hero in him.
I wouldn’t say I’m a person who’s particularly capable of insane and correct deep level thinking, and on top of that I’m INCREDIBLY EASY to impress. For me it’s like:
You know how Earth needed to be at the exact distance it is from the sun and have the perfect atmosphere to create life? Katsuki’s story is much like that.
If anyone else but Deku had been telling the story, if Deku hadn’t been as persistent, strong willed, and caring as he is, and if everything that happened to Katsuki didn’t happen in the exact order and manner it did, he wouldn’t have been as great as he is now. And while that’s simple enough to say, it’s truly such a beautiful thing to bear witness to.
We’re 300 chapters and nearly 6 years into MHA and we’ve seen.
Katsuki go from refusing to work with others to becoming a great team leader.
Tumblr media
His focus has always been on one thing: victory. In almost every situation, he’s had his eye on the win. It wasn’t always the case when Deku was involved, because Deku was so different from him in a way that made him feel threatened. And it’s something that has most likely been on his mind for a long time.
Tumblr media
He’s become more comfortable with his vision since his fight with Deku, and it was probably liberating in an emotional sense too. His fight with Deku didn’t just realign and solidify his own views on life, but made him more accepting of himself and absolved him of some of his heaviest insecurities.
Katsuki letting go of his superiority complex to better himself.
Tumblr media
In the days leading up to his fight with Deku, he was also fighting an internal battle for “being the reason behind All Might’s end.”
I wouldn’t argue that he was feeling guilty. While it was surely part of it, it shouldn’t be minimized to only guilt. The expressions on his face throughout the fight were incredible, he was angry, frustrated, confused, scared, quite clearly as he claimed, he just didn’t know what the hell he should do, so he fought.
Tumblr media
By the time he interned at Endeavor’s agency, he was already well aware that he had faults, which is a huge step for him, and he was beginning the process of pinpointing those faults.
His unwillingness to work with Deku dissolves
Tumblr media
After reaching a certain point in the manga, it’s become hard for me to imagine a time when Katsuki full on rejected Deku. In the first few volumes Katsuki got worse before he got better. He was in a comfortable position bullying Deku in middle school, but when he started to experience failure, when he witnessed Deku becoming stronger at a faster rate than him, he couldn’t even enjoy the fact that he was going to school where his favorite role model was teaching.
Tumblr media
Now, after everything, Katsuki was opening up to Deku. They started training together to help Deku gain control of OFA. And not just that, Katsuki was invested in the long term. While he shared the secret of OFA with Deku long before anyone else found out about it, he later started to shoulder some of the weight too, and he was good at it.
He called small might out for keeping secrets from Deku, claiming Deku trusted him with his life, but he wasn’t as easily convinced, pointing out a detail in the descriptions of the past users that might’ve gone over Deku’s head. He’s always been brilliant, but now he’s using that brilliance to actively try to become involved with Deku’s burden.
He’s changed in obvious ways, but in subtle ones too.
Tumblr media
After so much time, this panel is still really hard to look at. If you’ve ever suffered at the hands of bullies, you probably feel like there’s little satisfaction in their story even though so much has changed between them, there’s still a long way to go, there’s still a huge piece missing. Deku is way too forgiving, I don’t think he ever held anything against Katsuki for the way he treated him in the past. Katsuki is still hard with words, since the last time he bullied Deku, he has never said anything he doesn’t mean.
Katsuki has never been the type to lie. He doesn’t beat around the bush, he doesn’t pretend to be somebody he’s not, and while that part of him hasn’t changed, the way in which he delivers has. His heart has changed, and while I don’t recall a moment where he hasn’t been able to live up to his big claims, his confidence has changed from being used to mask his insecurity, to a healthier confidence that can lead, support, protect, and save.
Tumblr media
To think that this moment is the moment that solidified Katsuki’s path to greatness, the fact that his capabilities and brilliance have always made his future bright, he’s gone above and beyond his own expectations of the world and how it works. In the world of scientific journals, there is always a gap in the knowledge of the scientific community, a gap in the understanding of how the world works. When you find that gap, something incredible happens.
He let go of the past. Katsuki, who envisioned a life where he made it big because he knew he could. Katsuki, who was always self driven. Katsuki, who loves the taste of victory. Katsuki, who categorized the world and people around him in terms of power. Katsuki, who believed only the powerful could become strong.
Deku was the one thing in his life that didn’t fit in his picture of the world. To him, his understanding of how the world worked was defined by the strong, the weak, the good and the bad. He couldn’t understand how empathy and vulnerability could make someone strong.
I’m really excited to see where Katsuki goes from here. There’s still so much for him to discover, and he’s so, so close to the end stage of his metamorphosis.
