Blood Work (p1), Elitism, transmutation, and religious fear
⚠️ long post ⚠️
So, I now have a copy of Blood Work: A Tale of Medicine and Murder in the Scientific Revolution, by Holly Tucker. It's a reference for Yana-san, as she mentioned it in her old tuna.be blog around the start of the blue arc.
I see in the list of important people a mention of the real Dr. Moreau, and there's a later chapter about chimeras... so I know I'll be talking about that some, over this series of posts.
It's important here, too, because when researchers were first attempting blood transfusions in the 17th century, people were terrified about receiving blood from animals, like sheep and cattle. They thought that animal blood would transmute humans into human-animal hybrids. Even in the 20th century, some white people were terrified of receiving blood from black people, because they thought the blood could effect the race of their future children or grandchildren. Nonsense, of course, but they didn't understand.
17th century blood transfusions were generally performed by taking blood from a lamb or a calf. The barbers/physicians/researchers had no clue about blood types. Jean-Baptiste Denis successfully transfused blood from a lamb into a teenage patient. Then he made several successful attempts at transfusing from a calf to a "madman". The guy later died, and Denis was blamed. Turns out some doctors who didn't want him to succeed had actually poisoned that second subject with arsenic.
It wasn't even a matter of those physicians wanting his experiments to fail while theirs worked; no, they simply didn't want blood transfusions to become a practice. They were afraid of transmutation from animal blood, and they were afraid of what animal-to-human blood transfusions would reveal about humanity -- that we are truly just animals, too. The trial against Denis ended research into blood transfusions for about 150 years.
Blood types were still unknown in the late 18th century, when a physician wanted to attempt to revive George Washington's largely exsanguinated corpse with a transfusion of lamb's blood. FYI, he died on a December 14th, just like Prince Albert. His family refused the offer only because they feared sullying his body with animal blood, and they insisted his body must be left untainted and wholly together for him to be properly received into heaven. Such was the continued lack of understanding. Yana-san might have given Undertaker the idea to use blood transfusions in conjunction with other techniques for the reanimating and revival process from the account of what that physician wanted to do to Washington.
When blood transfusion research was in full swing, in the 19th century, they were starting to piece together the idea of blood groups, but they still didn't quite know about things like universal whole blood donor and universal whole blood recipient. There was a strong elitist element to this, so they generally thought like could only be compatible with like. They also still saw non-human blood as inferior, even if it might be compatible. The best compatibility was expected between twins and then between close relatives.
I have a feeling that Yana-san has played around with this bias, which would explain why real Ciel is only receiving AB (Sirius) blood, Canopus B, Vega O, and Polaris A. All those people at Sphere Music Hall are led to believe they are being treated as equals, when they are in fact being split up into a caste system where some "stars" are of a higher magnitude than others. And, at times, Blavat Sky and others have made it clear they see some blood types as being less worthy than others. By extension, some people are treated as less worthy. Blavat seems to realize that Sirius can receive blood from other blood types, because he gives "leftovers" of Vega and Polaris blood to the Sirius renal patients. It's possible that real Ciel doesn't know he can have any type of whole blood, but I suspect he knows and simply doesn't think anything else is good enough for him.
I'd also like to mention Snake and Finny here, since we know Finny was injected with something to increase his strength and other traits. Then we see Snake with various attributes that are associated with snakes. In either case (or both) we could be dealing with transmutation. It's not realistic in our world, but it might very well be possible in theirs. Each of them might have been injected with chemical cocktails derived from other animals: Snake from snakes and Finny from perhaps a few completely different species.
We now know Snake wasn't born a snake and turned into a human, but there's nothing to say he wasn't born human and "adulterated" with snake traits. There's also the weird story the freak show attendant claims: human mother and snake father. Maybe not an actual snake as his father but more like his mother being injected with snake blood or something... and that producing a hybrid child. Again, not what we'd consider possible, but the Kuroverse plays by different rules.
One other aspect I want to touch on in this post: Othello's and Grelle's fears regarding the very nature of human souls and existence. This is a form of religious fear, not too different from what George Washington's family feared. His family feared he wouldn't be accepted into heaven, while these two reapers fear humans might no longer even need souls, and that heaven may no longer matter to them. What would that mean for the existence of reapers, when their supposed salvation requires them to keep collecting souls?
Well, I'll probably talk about bias and fear again, as well as these other issues, but I'll stop here... for now.

A Pet Snake
In chapter 50, upon getting questioned by Sebastian about having taken Snake in, our Ciel answers with this:
Tumblr media
My first thought is that he's talking about all the snakes. But if we consider my theory on Snake's origins, by having our Ciel refer to his new servant as a pet, there's a possibility Yana could be hinting at Snake being a snake himself (originally). After all, he is quite literally talking about Snake as seen in the first panel. I can't see him refer to any of the other servants as pets, so this instance is interesting when considering the possibility of the "Snake is a snake" theory having some validity.
The 18th is upon us, aren't you excited to see what this month's chapter holds for us? I seem to always get a little nervous! And for everyone who celebrates it, have a lovely Valentine's Day, the day of love, be it romantic or friendship wise. May your day be filled with love! ♡ ♡ ♡
Thanks for reading! 𓆙

Tell me about how Bubby also has NPD I want to hear your ramblings
alright!! there might be some moments of mischaracterization (i feel like that's not the right word but i'd be framing him differently than the intention yk?) because i haven't rewatched hlvrai for a hot second! but!! here is my bubby narcissist theory, brought to you by someone with the disorder
probably the most obvious one is that bubby is EXTREMELY self-centered and confident. to a nearly satirical degree. he's often described as "crass" or "egotistical" because he's constantly talking about himself, how good he is, & talks huge about himself because he made to be the ultimate lifeform, duhh.
but it's also been shown he has some STRONG self doubts in the extent of how "perfect" he really is in moments of weakness, it's especially highlighted during his betrayal arc (ill come back to this) once he's been brought into his tube again, but it's also even highlighted during small moments in the commentary when he would stop praising himself briefly to doubt "is my plan working?" before immediately switching back to "yess, yes, im the best"
he's also been shown to be a compulsive liar towards tommy a lot with his "classic pranks" which is a habit that can come in a lot of npd patients, usually as a form of self-preservation or some other defense mechanism. (benrey also has a similar symptom here, where his memory will rewrite events to be biased in his favor! but this isn't about him)
his short temper and somewhat bitter attitude can also be easily taken as a lack of empathy for those he doesn't consider "on his level", so to speak, noting strong disregard to anything gordon really has to worry about - this doesn't mean he doesn't have his moments, however, just that he shoves it to the side a lot
another thing about his temper - he's very destructive! narcissistic personality disorder comes hand-in-hand with destructive anger issues, usually targetted towards the thing that's causing them the most frustration, but it could also really be anything (such as the random scientists he decides to kill)
probably the thing that solidified it the most for me was the concept of the betrayal arc as a whole, though. his only reason for going with it because he was convinced that nothing was his fault - but it had to be someone's, because people with narcissistic personality disorder can really struggle to figure a "that's life" kind of thing. he immediately pointed the blame to gordon once he realized gordon had failed the experiment, and instead of benrey helping correct his misleading train of thought, he fed into it and led bubby to assist in getting gordon's arm chopped off
something that, may i add, bubby did not want to happen!
npd is often caused by trauma, which could easily be a result of his tube and being a case of study, but that's more of a theorizing part.
i think the main reason why i take all of this as a personality disorder headcanon and not a "he's just a little charmingly shitty" way is that even once he's redeemed these qualities never go away - and nobody seems to mind that. nobody is constantly telling him that he needs to "fix his attitude" - they just learn how to understand him :)
this is kind of thrown together very like... haphazardly i can't explain it all very well BUT that is my opinion!! bubby npd haver

New York Travels???
Hey anime community! I just wanted to come on here and tell everyone that I’m doing commissioned writing! I need some money for my trip to New York City next week, so I’ll probably only be doing the commissions for this week.
So commissioned pieces start out at $5 per piece, and they’ll just be one shots, most likely 500-750 words. The price will vary if you’re requesting more words than that. I will also write it as an X Reader, OC insert or just Character x Character (Unless it’s an illegal ship).
Second, I don’t write smut, but I will write fluff and angst (because who doesn’t love some good angst?) for you guys.
Last, the fandoms I will write about are as follows:
-JOJO’s Bizarre Adventure
-Yuri on Ice
-Sk8 the infinity
-My Hero Academia
-Black Butler
-Star Wars Rebels/Clone Wars
-Dr. Stone
-Danny Phantom
-Batman (like the batboys and stuff)
You can message me on Instagram @whatthepaintrenee with your scenario and preferences for the one shot (unless you can message on here, I’d have to check but if so message me here). My cashapp is $WhatThePaintRenee and any donations would be greatly appreciated!
If you’d also like to check out some of my other writing and books (one of which has 10K reads), they’re over on Wattpad @ReginaldKastle24

I'm here to throw questions at you. 1. Does Sebastian still intend to eat Our Ciel's soul? I'm getting the feeling that Sebastian is having so much fun in living amongst the humans that devouring a small teen boy's soul is not highly important to him anymore, So there may be a chance for Our Ciel to reach old age. 2. Would Yana reveal Our Ciel's original name in the manga? 3. Is Undertaker still the background mastermind calling the shots behind the scenes, or has Real Ciel taken the power over and bosses UT around? 4. Is Real Ciel still "playing a game of chess" with his twin brother?
And I'm here to answer!
End game
1. Yes, I think Sebastian still has every intention of eating his soul. Yana-san has previously tweeted that this is the demon's very serious goal. That he'd truly eat the kid's soul sooner, too, if given the chance... like if our earl had given up on his wish after gaining the title of earl... or during the green witch arc. It doesn't matter to Sebastian how old or anything else his master is. Honestly, I think that both William and Sebastian underestimate our earl's soul. Or at least the impact it can have! Yana-san (I believe) confirmed there's nothing particularly special about his soul, in terms of human souls. It's just that it might turn out to be quite different than ones this demon has devoured before. Or perhaps, if our earl thanks the demon for its services, it's the "thanks" itself that makes the meal so much different. Harkening back to Hannah and Luka.
2. @midnight-in-town is quite right to say that Yana-san might choose to never actually reveal his name, at least not in the manga. I hope it's revealed, but I wouldn't bet money on it.
3. Undertaker might still be calling a few shots, but once he gets real Ciel to the level he's at now, real Ciel has probably been calling most of them. There's an odd dynamic going on here. Yes, I think Undertaker is his grandfather, but I don't think real Ciel knows this... yet. Real Ciel acts the part of the young noble who sees undertakers as low-class citizens, which they were considered at the time. Though real Ciel puts servants "in their place" and finds any disobedience to be offensive, he's extremely tolerant of Undertaker's laidback and visually lazy behavior. I figure that's because he knows he owes Undertaker some form of gratitude. I'd think if he knew his true relationship to Undertaker, then he'd never have asked if he'd serve as butler. Sometimes, he just has to let Undertaker do whatever is needed, particularly when it's about the physical upkeep of his body and the bodies of his fellow bizarre dolls. All the same, real Ciel likely bosses Undertaker around when he can. And Undertaker indulges him, probably because he wants to encourage real Ciel to be "himself" as much as possible. Which leads into #4.
4. Our Ciel and real Ciel are the kings in this game of chess, and neither one has given up just yet.
Notes on #3 and #4: I'd like to add that there are some Mother3 parallels very specific to these questions.
In regards to #3, Undertaker has a few character parallels with Mother3 and earlier games in the series, like:
Nippolyte, eccentric gravedigger with a special shovel... and keeper of a "treasured" family heirloom. He's only in Mother3. He has a secret garden where he raises particularly odd "crops", and though he doesn't raise the dead, he does have to fight zombies that randomly pop up. He's openly hostile towards the self-proclaimed king and is repeatedly punished for it; his house keeps getting burned down on the king's orders.
Dr. Andonuts, inventor of Fascinating Chimera and avid eater of red bean paste donuts. He's in all three games... because he's a time-traveler. Though, in Mother, he's only there if we are to assume Lloyd was him as a child; Lloyd looks like a younger version of him, and they both hide in trash cans. He's very quirky and likes to offer "an donuts" to protags, or at least to Lucas. He has a son named Jeff, and they have a rather strained relationship, though Jeff does leave his boarding school and finds himself at his father's lab.
Fassad, Magypsy who deserted their people and changed their name. They are only in Mother3.
George, ancestor of the mirror twins who started the whole thing by stealing technology from an alien race and giving it to humanity... including passing down certain abilities through generations. He's only shown in Mother/EarthBound2: Beginnings. However, he's alluded to later.
Here, there's another tie-in to the parallel with Dr. Andonuts, because the inventor of Fascinating Chimeras eventually creates what he calls the Ultimate Chimera. This UC quickly becomes completely uncontrollable, thanks to how it was designed. I see a couple possible parallels to the UC in the Kuroverse, and one of those takes form as these most-highly-advanced Bizarre Dolls. Though he hasn't said it yet, Undertaker might have a slightly different name for these upgraded BD's. If he ever transplants our earl's soul into the body of real Ciel, that result could end up getting the designation as Ultimate Doll (or something similar).
And regarding #4, the fighting in Mother3 doesn't end between the mirror twin brothers until the older, dead and reanimated twin, Claus, finally gives up and accepts death (and final rest) as his fate. We might see something similar happen between our earl and real Ciel, even if it has to happen between our earl's soul stuck with real Ciel's brain and body. If the final confrontation sticks closer to the game, it would take place with our earl's soul still in his original body.

Dr. Strange 2 spoiler free review:
This isn't a Dr. Strange movie any more than Civil War was a Cap movie. This is a good thing.
Dr. Strange continues to appear in films only to show us that the big problem is his fucking ego.
They didn't whitewash America! On the other hand, we saw her moms for three seconds, which I'm pretty sure maxes out her Disney Gay Quotient, so I won't be surprised if they straightwash her.
The next major MCU plot arc is the only worse choice than Civil War: Hickman's Infinity arc. Get ready to watch Our Heroes slaughter entire universes (plural) in cold blood while the narrative continues to insist they're the good guys.
Overall, it was... Okay? Ish? It had a couple of fun moments here and there, but the plot felt incredibly rushed and there was no time to develop anything. You can really see the fingerprints of the "we did all the action scenes already, the director's job is to stitch them together coherently" approach.
This should go without saying by now, but... Don't pay to see it.
