So...about JL X RWBY: Superheroes and Huntmen Part One...

Last night, I sat down to check out the film (shoutout to @autistic-swanprincess who shared the link over on Discord). Here are my first impressions:

In general, I thought the film was alright. I mean it's not anything particularly groundbreaking but as RWBY's first ever movie, I think it succeeded in getting me at least invested in what’s to come next. One concern I had going in was that this was going to turn out to be more of a DC film with the RWBY characters taking a back seat in their own first film. Technically, in some way, we kind of got one or two scenes where that happened---like Superman overstepping Ruby's leadership in some of the action moments. But putting that aside, I thought the film was fine.

I appreciate the fact that there was a nice unexpected twist to the story. Here I pegged the main setting of the story to be back at Beacon but nope! Ultimately it was basically RWBY and JNR trapped in some of kind of simulation and the big cliffhanger teaser for Part Two is that whoever trapped JNR_RWBY in the virtual realm is someone from their world.

So on that front, like I said, the film did good on getting me interested in the story. Part One was just the appetizer so I’m hoping that Part Two will bring the main course.

Specific Things I wanted to discuss about the film:

I don't know how the DC fangirl in me was supposed to feel about the whole arc with Batman considering to stay in Remnant because in Remnant, he is made into a bat Faunus with electromagnetic abilities. While I can’t speak for other audience members, for me, the whole angle about Batman considering to stay in Remnant so that he can feel more useful as a Faunus as opposed to a regular human without any special abilities like his comrades felt really off-putting to me.

Batman being the brains of the league despite not having any special abilities is kind of the POINT of what made his character so great in the first place. The whole discussion of Bruce being less of a warrior due to his lack of powers was never really a problem. Perhaps I missed a couple of DC films or comic material where this was an important cause of conflict but from the Batman content I've indulged in over the years, this was never a thing.

What the Bat lacked in superpowers, he more than made up for it with his sheer intelligence and proper utilization of his wealth to create resources that helped benefit his team.

As a matter fact, wasn't there not an entire DC animated film where Batman had logs on the key weaknesses of each of the founding members of the Justice League and came up with specific ways to kill each of them as a failsafe?

Like I remember Superman's being a kryptonite bullet to the heart or something while Flash's was attaching a bomb to him that would instantly blow him to smithereens should he stop running so he basically had to keep running forever and I think Wonder Woman's was injecting her with a powerful hallucinogen that made her see multiple clones of archnemesis Cheetah that she would fight and keep fighting till she died?

I can't quite remember the name of the movie but I remember that was part of the story. Batman, being the "smart guy" that was that he literally hatched the downfall of his super-powered allies as a backup plan. Somehow the enemy got a hold of said plan from the Bat and used it against them.

Again, I'm just going off of vague memory here but my point is that forgive me if the whole concept of Batman wanting powers/abilities to feel more useful to the League sounds ludicrous to my ears since, canonically in the DC material, that's never been Batman's key weakness.

At least NOT from the content I've watched. If there is a Batman story that touched on this subject then please let me know cause outside of that, I felt Batman's arc in the film was weird.

I did enjoy his dynamic with Weiss though. I thought Batman/Bruce and Weiss worked really well together. They were one of the two DC x RWBY dynamics that I actually liked. 

Jaune and the Green Lantern girl (can’t remember her name at the moment) were my second favourite team up. Although I thought the scene leading up to them being tricked by the fake Pyrhha was kind of dumb given the setup. But outside of that, I really liked how compassionate and understanding Jaune was with Green Lantern girl. He was like a big brother to her which is fitting since Jaune’s patience came from a place of him legit being a big brother with younger sisters.

Renora and Cyborg, on the other hand, were...ridiculous! The awkward love triangle with Cyborg kind of low-key flirting with Nora while Ren reacted jealously was quite cringey to me.

Thanks CRWBY, I hate it! ESPECIALLY knowing how Renora's relationship ends after V8, this was like twisting the knife for the shippers.

Who thought this was cute or even funny?

I dunno what was worse---jealous Ren or abrasive Nora? BOTH personalities felt so out of character for both of em. Then again; I guess it was more in line with how stupid they were written to behave between V7-V8. Still doesn't make it better.

Last but not least. There’s Bumblebee working with Wonder Woman. Not much to say, they worked ok...when they didn't include any out of place moments like Yang kind of thirsting after Wonder Woman.

Like the scene where WW lifted Oscar to interrogate him and Yang made a comment about her being a "strong woman" which Blake reacted to, kind of jealous like? I don't understand why that scene needed to be there. I guess this was the writers way to injecting some awkward humour into the scene?

But I dunno, it came off more clunky than humorous; at least to me.

Speaking of Oscar Pine---it is time to address one of the elephants in the room for this squiggly Pineheard is SALTY!

When Aaron Dismuke announced on Twitter that the BOI was gonna be in this film, needless to say, I was more than ecstatic at that news.

Then when I saw the first teaser image and trailer for the film and saw the RWBY girls in their Beacon outfits, I became confused as to how exactly Oscar was going to fit into the movie since Oscar didn't roll up until V4.

Then I saw the film---at least the first part and I gotta say: what was even the point of having Oscar in this movie?

RT must've paid Aaron in gum because Oscar barely spoke in this movie. He had one line that was barely audible since his character was immediately replaced with an overlay of Ozpin the only scene he appeared. Seriously, what was the point of him even being there if that’s all we got of him?

My only hope is that Oscar---ACTUAL Oscar and not a hologram will have a bigger part in Part Two because if it wasn't for the fact that this film has two parts then I would've been livid as to how they treated my boi in his first RWBY movie.

Sure us Pineheads got to see his smiling face---adorable and freckly as always for like 3 minutes but c'mon! After being starved of his presence for RWBY V9 except for that ONE certain scene, would it have killed them to give us ONE scene with Oscar where he actually spoke?

Frigging Glynda Goodwitch who hasn't been seen since V3 got a scene. SHIT! PYHRRA who is DEAD got a speaking scene over Oscar. Seriously, at this point, why did the CRWBY even bother killing off Pyrhha? They keep finding new ways to insert her into the current storyline when she's been gone for 6 seasons now.

And as much as I like Pyrhha, when she---a character who was killed off seasons ago---is given more preference for precious screentime over characters who are alive in the current story, it starts to get a lil bothersome after some time.

That being said, since it was revealed at the end of the movie that JNR_RWBY are actually in Atlas in their V7 outfits then this is a sign that we could see more of Oscar in the next part of the movie. Keeping my fingers crossed on that one.

Overall, that's all I have to say about the movie. I don't know who wrote the story and script for the film but if I had to give the first part of this film a score, I'd give it a 6/10.

While it was cool seeing the JL team in RWBY style, from a story perspective, it wasn't the best writing I've seen from the franchise (and that's saying something).

It wasn't bad. Just lacking in some areas but I guess that's probably due to it being split into 2 parts. Perhaps things will be better in Part 2 whenever it comes out.

feeling conflicted on RWBY Dust. SPECIFICALLY Hard Light and Gravity Dust because at least like. the other kinds are folllowing a sort of theme of classical elements and nature stuff in a more mystical fantasy kinda way and meanwhile hard light and gravity feel like an abrupt swerve into just existing to justify floating islands and stock sci-fi stuff like artificial gravity/anti-gravity/force-fields. like i feel like this isn't BAD, just that the issue is that Dust should pick a lane, basically. Thematic consistency is always a plus. Either make it wholly framed as a pseudo-scientific power source backed up with sci-fi rules and with semi-believable explanations of how it works in a sci-fi technobabble framework of exotic particles and chemical reactions. Or stick more faithfully to the more whimsical and wondrous fantasy route, with a more classical feel and strong tie-ins to "nature" and "natural energy", and do a better job of explaining Dust's important roles in the natural world and its balance and mysticism, rather than just what it does when people make use of it. Or if you do want to have it both ways, take it further: Make Lake Matsu float because of something else (electromagnetic fuckery with Electric Dust, or something to do with Wind Dust, for instance,) and then make something like Gravity a recently synthesized, man-made Dust with properties that cannot be otherwise obtained by simply mixing Dust. And then you could get into how people react to this: Is it mostly celebratory? Are there detractors who say this stuff is evil and unnatural and hurting the planet? Are there those who view it in-between, as an unfortunate necessity? Are there little old ladies who think standing too close to a modern-day hard-light force field might give you Fantasy Cancer or something?

BBTAG Alt Voice Actor Powers

Something dumb I have been doing is looking at the various voice actors of the characters in the BBTAG franchises and imagining "What if these characters had powers/abilities/skills/aesthetics from other characters that their VAs have "portrayed?

Here are some examples, using both English and Japanese VAs using the 4 main protags of the first 4 fates

Ragna the Bloodedge, English VA: Patrick Seitz, Japanese VA: Tomokazu Sugita

A lot of good choices for Ragna, for his English VA there is Scorpion from Mortal Kombat and Endeavor from MHA if you want to Fire to give him the opposing element to Jin's Ice. He is also Cursed Arm Hassan from Fate if you want to lean into his evil arm. Him having Crow's Branch of Sin: Crow Claw from Deadman Wonderland did seem like a cool blade-based power as well. Griamore's Wall magic from Seven Deadly Sins would be a good idea for more defense/variety, and many others are just a lot more but those are the ones that stand out to me.

For his Japanese VA. The best one I can think of is Kensei Muguruma from Bleach one of the Visoreds. His Bankai really sticks out to me as getting bladed knuckles with explosive punches. Ragna does go pretty hand to hand in gameplay but I do feel like whenever we see him fighting in anything animated he just fights like Ichigo just without being able to fly).

Yu Narukami, English VA: Johnny Yong Bosch, Japanese VA: Daisuke Namikawa

His English VA has plenty of other protagonists in his repertoire. Ichigo from Bleach and Nero from Devil May Cry, Guren Nash from Tenkai Knights I would probably only take the wolf motif from. Lio Fotia from Promare if only because of the cool armor the Burnish have in that movie.

For his Japanese VA, there is Eustass Kid from One piece who has the Magnet Magnet Devil Fruit and I did have the idea of if Yu got an EXS ability or Semblance it'd be Electromagnetism (due to his ability to "attract and bond with" many people. Jellal Fernandes from Fairy Tail's Heavenly Body Magic would also be interesting. I have seen someone make a joke about him sharing a VA with Waver Velvet/Lord El-Melloi II/Anime Snape from the Fate series as well, but the powers he'd get from here would probably be Zhuge Liang's abilities from Fate/Grand Order. Momoshiki Otsutsuki from Boruto I would only look at if you just want to go full OP. His Japanese Va also voiced Matt Ishida in the new Digimon Adventure Reboot and I just think that him voicing the one wielding the Crest of Friendship is very fitting.

Hyde Kido, English VA: Kyle McCarley, Japanese VA: Ryohei Kimura

This is the hardest one to do because every other series has had a few games to their name to flesh out a character and their motifs and powers, so I am kind of working with nothing here.

For the English VA, With how cursed the Void Powers are I partially lean towards Sir Percedal from Wakfu (at least in Season 3) for the most part. For his Japanese VA, there really isn't much I can single out here due to how little UNIB's story has progressed, but to throw some of them out there: Wonder-Red from Wonderful 101, Eugene Sims from inFAMOUS Second Son, Sorey from Tales of Zestria, and Howzer from Seven Deadly Sins.

Ruby Rose, English VA: Lindsay Jones, Japanese VA: Saori Hayami

RWBY characters have half the problem that UNIB characters have in that a lot of the English cast haven't done anything outside of RWBY, there are exceptions but for the most part, you look up their IMDB pages and you'll mostly get Rooster Teeth stuff.

The only other two roles Lindsay has played are Imina from Overlord and Venessa Kimball from Red vs Blue.

For her Japanese VA, we have Anya Hepburn from Soul Eater NOT and her Halberd skills, Himawari Uzumaki from Boruto also has a unique eye power in the form of the Byakugan, Atalanta from Fate and her Archery skills translated into Ruby's sniping might be fitting and she IS known in her legend for being a fast runner (fitting with Ruby's speed), Yamato from One Piece has the Inu Inu no Mi, Model: Okuchi no Makami (Eng: Dog-Dog Fruit, Model: Okuchi-no-Makami) which gives her the form of a Divine Wolf and Ruby does have a motif with wolves sometimes.

This isn't something important or big, just a fun topic of discussion. If you could see a character from one of the franchises in BBTAG using a power/weapon/ability/skill from another role their VA (English and Japanese) have played, what would you give to who?

The Two Best Fanfics I’ve Ever Read

I’m bored and today is my birthday, so I figured I should post a lot so I get a lot of the seratonin that comes from messages from Tumblr. Anyways, if some of you guys are bored and want to read something, here’s the two best things I’ve ever read… neither of which are on any of my main fandoms (unless you count Pokemon, but I’m not THAT into it…):

Blackened Skies - A Danganronpa Fic by MrCynical and CSpratt (AO3)

Blackened Skies takes place after the events of the three main games, and sees all 16 of the series Blackened (give or take a few characters who aren’t technically Blackened but might as well be) mysteriously brought back to life on a gigantic cruise ship called the Despair of the Seas.

A ship that belongs to none other than their former captor, Monokuma. Naturally, what follows is a Killing Game: a Killing Game more heated and intense that the first three combined, with the line between friend and foe blurring more and more each day as new bonds are formed, old ones are tested, and secrets- wether ones hidden by the students or taken by Monokuma- are unveiled.

As tensions continue to mount and bodies begin to pile, our protagonist- who I won’t name for the sake of spoilers for Chapter 1 of V3- must find a way to reestablish harmony among their classmates, and escape the ship or die trying… for a second time.

This fic is… awesome. I mean, it feels so accurate that it’s basically just a fourth game. A fourth game that treats even the most hated Blackened as people and not just running gags, shines a spotlight on underdeveloped and unexplored characters, and overall actually might even be BETTER than its source material.

Naturally, it contains major spoilers for all three of the games- and the anime, too- and it gets knee-deep in spoiler territory QUICKLY, but it is worth it. It is so worth it. I can’t imagine how much of a ride this fic must be without the context of the three games, but it’d still be really good.

Boldores and Boomsticks - A Pokemon x RWBY Crossover AU by DarwinCandidate (Spacebattles)

Boldores and Boomsticks sees the ragtag team of Huntresses we’ve come to know and love, Team RWBY, and throws them into an another world: this one overrun by not Grimm, but equally strange creatures that are just as widespread and perhaps even more powerful, yet far more benevolent. Creatures called Pokemon.

However, the Grimm threat is still an issue to worry about in this world. They weren’t the only things to come through those portals, after all. Along with their new, powerful little animal buddies, they’ll have to face enemies new and old to protect their new friends on the other side, and find a way back home.

This one is just as cool as Blackened Skies. I actually didn’t know anything about RWBY before reading this, but from what I’ve seen since, it is VERY in-character, especially with the tone and humour (Tracey’s depiction of Gary’s crash and burn, for example, will never fail to make me smile.)

This little guy has inspired a whole bunch of hypothetical Pokemon Isekai AUs from me, one of which I actually kinda like but at the same time I’m like light years away from being able to write it because I’ll need to wait until the series is finished which could take like a year for all I know and also it’s a really small channel so I need to ask permission oh wait shit I’m rambling again forget I said that

ANYWAYS, go read it! It’s funny and weird and cool and Pokemon crossovers are so awesome and I’d love to read more of them!
