Fic Writer Wrapped- 2023 Edition
I did this in 2022 and 2021, and am revving it back up for my own personal interest in tracking these things. Tagging anyone reading this if you want to participate!
Like in previous years, this is about fic published on ao3 in 2023 (not amount of words written in 2023, which I don't keep track of).
How many stories did you complete?
I completed one longfic (more than 100k words), eight medium fics (between 15k and 100k), and forty-two short fics (under 15k). Just like last year, I continue to have considerable lag between writing and publishing. The longfic and some of the medium fics were mostly written in 2022, but published and finished this year.
What is your total word count for the year?
547,416 words
What fandoms did you write in this year?
I really committed to the multi-fandom bit. I also discovered an addiction to cdramas. I wrote in Harry Potter, Tolkien, The Grisha Trilogy, Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen, Emma - Jane Austen, Twilight, the Locked Tomb, House of the Dragon, 陈情令 The Untamed, 山河令 Word of Honor, 苍兰诀 Love Between Fairy and Devil, 莲花楼 Mysterious Lotus Casebook, 无量 Wúliàng, and 长月烬明 Till the End of the Moon.
Did you write more, less, or roughly about what you expected?
This year's published word count borrows from many projects that were written in 2022, probably about 150k words' worth. Even subtracting that, I wrote a lot more than I expected. Because I didn't write a long fic this year (123k of Rainbow of Chaos's total of 130k words was written in 2022), I felt like I was unproductive compared to previous years. But I actually I wrote a lot!
What’s your favorite story of the year?
To catch a fox (Grisha verse, the Darkling/Nikolai). I had a blast writing this, it felt like it wrote itself, and I think the fic is so much fun, I still enjoy re-reading it, and I'm really happy about how many other people liked it as well!
What is your most underappreciated story of the year?
This question gets harder and harder to answer every year, because the more deliberately niche I write the happier I am when I get a single comment and feel that is more than sufficient appreciation. I guess if I had to pick one, it's my Aredhel/Celegorm fic, because imo this ship deserves to be more popular than it is!
Biggest fanfic-related disappointment of 2023?
I was riding the high of discovering the Darkling/Nikolai ship after watching the TV show Shadow and Bone in March. A good friend left a prompt that I loved, in an event called Fandom Orienteer, which had a several-month-long writing period and then a posting window in August. I bit off more than I could chew when I started writing Palace in the Dark, found my ideas too plotty, and did not finish in time to post a completed story in August. By the time I actually finished over Thanksgiving, not only did I miss being part of the event, I had lost almost all my WIP readers (except my friends from the darkolai server, shout out to you, you are the best!). It's fine, the fic is finished and complete on my profile, and readers will slowly find it. But I was disappointed in not being able to finish in July for the event and when the momentum from the show was hotter.
Biggest fanfic-related surprise of 2023?
I'm surprised by how many multi-fandom exchanges I did. I was only dipping my toe into them in 2022 and was not sure the whole thing really suited me. I wrote almost forty exchange fics this year, and got some amazing gift fics in exchange, and it's been really fun.
Something you look forward to working on in 2024?
I think I'll work on more villain-centric fic for MDZS, and also hopefully write more new-to-me fandoms for exchanges.

6 and/or 18 for the ao3 wrapped?
hi friend >:33 hope you're doing well!
6. favourite title you used?
definitely swallowing smoke. i wish it were socially acceptable to reuse titles for every second fic XDD. it's i think my least visited fic too, though i don't regret giving it that beautiful title at all.
18. the character that gave you the most trouble writing this year?
good question... hmm. i think Miles' voice is kinda hard to pin down, i'm still struggling occasionally with his dialogue and narration, so purely on that, him. but petunia's arc in anabiosis has been quite difficult too :P that's more on the realism, however, and keeping her consistent across the chapter while giving her a gradual character arc regardless. i kind of hope i can release it before the end of the year... we'll see.
thanks for the questions <333 here's the full list for the curious.

19 and 24 of the year end thing?
Hello my dear!
19. What's something that surprised you while you were working on a fic? Did it change the story?
This is kind of a cop out because it didn't really happen when I was writing it, but the positive feedback on Just Some Guy really was not expected. And it did, technically, change the story, because I wrote a follow up with Not Just Some Guy. There wasn't a plan for it originally, but I wrote 11k words in a week and got it done.
24. If this were an awards show, who would you thank?
God that's so hard. I want to tag literally everyone who has every reached out to talk to me about my writing. The most important person to thank is @the-navistar-carol obviously. She makes me better as writer and as a person. I want to thank you, Ezri, for always making me feel special with your essays. I want to thank my group chat who freaked out over updates. I want to thank Mona (@youngroyalsrewatch) for her pdf notes. I want to thank Z (@insomnaticwilmon) for telling me I write like an old playwright, and they respect it - I just want to thank Z for being Z, actually. I want to thank the people who showed up in the comments every update and every fic and made me excited to see them. I hope you know who you are because I cannot possibly tag you all.
So: Dani, you, Mona, Z and the entire rest group chat (Abram, Megan, Katie, Henrike), as well as everyone who made updating so much fun.
another writer wrapped because I'm bored.

Steve hates mixtapes, always has. He's made some for girls before, went all out, spent hours making them. But he doesn't get it. He doesn't understand why people like them so much, why people think the effort is worth it.
He remembers how those girls had smiled when he'd given them the mixtapes, remembers how sweet they'd been on him after, how they kept talking about it. Even though it's just some songs he thought they might like. He was never sure how to make any of them romantic, didn't know if they expected any input from him between the songs. He's pretty sure he'll never really get it, but…
He wants to make one for Eddie.
Eddie has been trying so hard to get him to like metal or rock or anything 'alternative'. And Steve doesn't know how to explain what he does or doesn't like, doesn't know how to explain why he likes Sabbath Bloody Sabbath but can't stand T.N.T.
He's tried to explain it. Tried to sit down with Eddie and explain that there is a happy medium betweent he ones too loud and the ones that are just… boring. And Eddie tries to listen, is so clearly trying.
But Steve can't explain it, doesn't know how to. Not without sounding like an idiot, anyway. Telling Eddie that a lot of AC/DC songs don't have enough going on to make his ears feel happy would ruin whatever thing the two of them have going on.
Which is why he's sat on the floor, desperately looking through the tapes Eddie has been forcefully lending him, trying to find the right songs for a mixtape. If he can't explain it to Eddie, maybe he can show him instead.
He refuses to acknowledge to odd bubbling excitement building in his stomach. Eddie is his friend, this isn't romantic. Eddie wants to show him his music, wants to share something he enjoys, there's nothing for Steve to be getting so worked up over. For all he knows, Eddie is straight.
It takes him three weeks to make the mixtape.
"Eddie!" Steve jogs to catch up with him. It's the third time they've run into each other by accident, outside of the kids or Robin. It's the first time that Steves had the mixtape in his pocket, ready.
"Hey Steve," he raises an eyebrow. "What's got you in such a good mood?"
"Day off," Steve lies. "And I'm done with the shit I need to do. Uh, anyway, I have- I mean, it's not… fuck. Ok, here, just…" He awkwardly holds the mixtape out, shifting when Eddie carefully takes it, like it's something precious. "It's, uh… I know you've been, like, struggling to figure out what metal songs I'm into or whatever so… these are the, uh, type. Things. I guess."
Eddie is smiling, small and soft. He hasn't looked up from the track list since he turned it over.
"I'm already noticing a theme." His voice is so gentle, almost adoring, that Steve feels his face heating up. It's only worse when Eddie looks up, turning that smile directly on him. "Thanks Steve."
"Uh, yeah, no worries?" Steve bites at his nail.
"I hope you know that I'm making you one," Eddie raises an eyebrow, smirking. He slowly starts walking around him. "After I'm done with this shelf for Wayne, I'm making you one. I'm gonna rock your world, Harrington."
Steve laughs a little, hopes it doesn't sound as awkward to Eddie as it does to him. "Look forward to it."
Eddie gives him a two finger salute, turning to walk a little faster to his van.
Steve waits until he turns a corner, looking around to make sure no one can see him and doing a little fist pump.

Time 2 Go - Matilda Marigolds
Oh, I think it's time to go Your hands are washing over me so slow And I, I watch you go
Dusk deepened into night and Bdubs sat unmoving. Silent, watchful, head propped on his knees. It started snowing but he didn’t shiver. He didn’t even feel the cold.
There was a light in the distance. Bdubs watched it approach, waited until it resolved into a figure holding a flickering torch, waited until he was sure it was Etho, his face glowing in the flame, his brow creased with shadows.
Only then could Bdubs relax.
Etho drew near and crouched beside the body at Bdubs’ feet. He placed the torch carefully beside him and began his investigation. He lay two fingers on the body’s wrist but there was no pulse. He placed his hand in front of the body’s mouth but there was no breath. The arrow jutting out of its back looked like a carnival flag, fletched in red.
Etho broke the arrow with a snap.
The snow was coming heavier now, falling in eddies. Etho swung off his cloak, lay it on the ground. Unstrung his waterskin, laid that out too.
He knelt beside the body and heaved, his breath rasping sharply against the air. The body rolled onto the cloak.
There was blood around its mouth. Bdubs didn’t remember that part.
Etho ran his hand through its hair, combed out the burrs and the leaves. He straightened out its bandanna, brushed the flaking mud off its pantlegs. Then he delicately tipped the waterskin on to his handkerchief, dampening it. He wiped at the blood until its face was clean.
When Etho finished, he sat back on his heels. There was shouting in the distance. It wasn’t safe to be out here, alone. Bdubs wished Etho would get a move on.
But Etho sat there a moment more, expression unreadable. “I’ll win it for you, Bdubs,” he said, finally, and Bdubs snorted.
Etho stood, stretched, craned his neck upwards.
Bdubs stood too, mirroring him. There wasn’t much to see up there, just clouds. Falling snow.
“Even though you didn’t win it for me.”
His voice was warm, warm against the cold night. He laughed at his own joke.
“Just kidding. I love you.”
Bdubs laughed too.

ao3 wrapped [writers edition]
Created by @floydsin. I stole it from @lurkinglurkerwholurks
How many words have you written this year?  327,224 words! Dang!
How many works did you publish this year? At least 20, probably more.
What work are you most proud of (regardless of kudos/hits)?  borderline. That plot was complicated for me and it took a LOT out of me to write it.
What work of yours has the most hits?  borderline.
What work of yours got more feedback than you expected?  a sky of honey. I was surprised at how many people liked the previous fic and wanted to see more! I didn't expect that.
Favorite title you used?  savestate. it's a bad pun that made me laugh.
If you use song lyrics, which artist’s songs did you pull from the most?  I owe Kate Bush for most of my fic titles, lbr.
Pairing you wrote the most for this year?  Superbat <3 my beloved
Favorite pairing you wrote for this year?  Lex & Bruce in a sky of honey was actually a surprise fave. Lex's dialogue and bickering with Bruce is so much fun.
What work was the quickest to write?  Ironically, the first few chapters of borderline.
What work took you the longest to write?  bloodletting takes a while to update because of the mando'a translations. Probably 3-4x longer than a normal chapter update.
How many WIP’s do you have in your docs for next year?  Just one or two so far.
What’s your longest work of the year?  a sky of honey, clocking in at 95,618 words.
What’s your shortest work of the year?  do it again.
What WIP are you taking into next year with you? too many...
What’s your most common “Additional Tags” tag?  not beta read...so real, bestie.
Your favorite character to write this year?  Probably Thomas Wayne, surprisingly. He's so funny to me.
The character that gave you the most trouble writing this year?  Bruce.
What’s one pairing you want to explore next year?  Clark/Slade
Which work of yours have you reread the most?  borderline since I needed to remember where I was going while writing it, and then probably bloodletting.
How many kudos in total did you get this year?  39,650
Which work has the most comments?  borderline. though I had to delete a LOT of threads there so it's probably even higher.
Did you do any collaborative works this year? I bother @januariat every few days to discuss a sky of honey, so yes.
Did you write any gifts this year?  Several for @audreycritter and @lurkinglurkerwholurks
Did you receive any gifts this year?  Yes -- several from @audreycritter and @lurkinglurkerwholurks as well as a few from folks writing about borderline and a few of my shitposts. Thank you friends <3
What’s your most common category?  Gen, somehow?
What do you listen to while writing?  My increasingly complex spotify playlists. Depends on the type of writing.
Favorite work you wrote this year? I actually really liked nocturn and synchronicity.
Favorite line/passage you wrote this year?  It's so hard to decide. Probably one of the mando'a jokes I made in Jason's dialogue.
Biggest surprise while writing this year?  People do still tell you to kill yourself over fanfiction online! Bizarre.

Fic Writer Wrapped- 2022 Edition
I did this last year, and have looked forward all year to being able to do a year-over-year comparison, so I’m reviving it even though I haven’t seen these same questions floating around again. tagging @ashesandhackles @heavy-metal-dick @phantomato @metalomagnetic @perverse-idyll if you want to participate!
Like last year, this is about fic published on ao3 in 2022. (There are some fics that are published, but remained anonymous through the end of 2022, and they’re getting counted here.) I once again got bit hard by the insane-speed-writing-bug in October through now, for example I wrote a 123k fic that I haven’t even started publishing yet. That’s for 2023, I guess.
How many stories did you complete?
I completed one longfic (more than 100k words), two medium fics (between 15k and 100k), and twenty short fics (under 15k). The one longfic is barely even fair to count in 2022, as I wrote probably less than ten percent of its word count during this calendar year. But I finished it this year, which is an amazing feeling.
What is your total word count for the year?
331,524 words
What fandoms did you write in this year?
Yay me for going multi-fandom!! I wrote in Harry Potter, The Locked Tomb, Disney (Frozen/Sleeping Beauty), Emma - Jane Austen, The Graceling Realm Series, The Rings of Power, and the Silmarillion.
Did you write more, less, or roughly about what you expected?
This one is hard to answer. I wrote less than I expected, way less, for most of the year. Then my switch to LotR-obsession hit me like a train wreck with the season finale of Rings of Power, and I wrote like a maniac. I wrote at least 200k words between the season finale airing and the end of 2022.
What’s your favorite story of the year?
This is an impossible question, just like it was last year, because I like most of the fic I write, but I think I’ll go with Borrowing Against the Past. It’s about an adult Regulus Black who does not go to the cave, and so he lives and marries a nice girl and has three adorable children. Then the Second War happens, and he reunites with Sirius, and life gets a little less idyllic. The story has a twist ending I’m still awfully proud of.
What is your most underappreciated story of the year?
lol. I mean it, lol. Moving from writing in a mega-fandom to doing multi-fandom exchanges in tiny fandoms has been a shock for sure. Pretty much all of the minor-fandom fics written for MFEs go into this bucket in my head.
Biggest fanfic-related disappointment of 2022?
Hmm, I think the fact that I really wanted to write a fic to illustrate a fanart I fell in love with (it’s always the other way around, with writers getting fanart for preexisting stories!). I lost my track on that fic and then lost interest in the fandom, so I am disappointed in myself. It remains on my to-do list, though, and I hope I do it.
Biggest fanfic-related surprise of 2022?
The fact that everyone loved, and no one (said that they) hated, the twist ending of Borrowing Against the Past! You guys are the best. <3
Something you look forward to working on in 2023?
So much LotR fic in my brain. SO MUCH.

Hey stranger! I’d love to read your answers for 3, 17, and 30 <3
hey friend! <333 let's see...
3. what work are you most proud of (regardless of kudos/hits)?
i'm not sure, but right now it's probably an even split between closer and anabiosis. they're both very much character studies and i've found that i really like doing those! and of course the opportunity for (torture) porn is always a plus.
17. your favourite character to write this year?
MIGUELITOOOOO i think you knew this one was coming XDDD. but just. yeah. he's so interesting i love playing with him <333 don't get me wrong, i like vee as well (and writing petunia has proven to be very interesting!) but right now it's miguel and his tits on the brain all the way.
30. biggest surprise while writing this year?
being accused of copying a fic, and everything that happened after, to be honest. was not expecting that at all.
in a more positive way, spiderverse in itself was a big ol surprise for me! i've been solidly one fandom for half my life, same with shipping generally, only really changing fandoms or ships when i also lost interest in whatever i was doing previously. that's changed!
i'm still a tomarrymort guy in my heart of hearts, but along with adding tomcest and tomarry sr to the list of ships (and petvee, which... uh. yeah don't ask), i've begun being really interested in everything spiderverse! and i'm honestly a miguelbowl shipper. whatever you call that these days. basically he can get fucked by anyone on earth and i'll be interested XD
thanks for the questions, i had fun answering them! here's the full list for the curious.

Hi 💜
How about 2, 8, 21 for the fic writing asks? -Sflow
I still 100% get star struck when I see you in my inbox. I just need you to know that. Like wow. It's you. You're real. And here.
But hello!
2. What’s something you learned about yourself as a writer?
I learned a lot about myself, good and bad, as a writer this year. The most ridiculous thing, though, is that I, apparently, love commas. They are my favorite thing. I really really need to cut down on commas. I use so many commas. The amount of commas Dani deletes from my works is insane and there are still a million.
I also found out that "Unhinged Hours" are really really good for crack fics. Every crack fic I've written has been planned or executed during an unhinged moment.
8. What fic made you feel the happiest to work on?
Simon Eriksson: Just Some Guy From Biology. I adored this fic. I was giggling to myself the whole time. It was the first time I wrote an entirely self-indulgent crack fic, and it came out pretty good, I think.
21. If you had to choose one, what was THE most satisfying writing moment of your year?
Ahhhhh there are so many moments with my writing that I was like damn. I can't pick just one. I've narrowed it down to 3 because I'm dramatic: the night I finished the first draft of Screwed, the podfic for Just Some Guy being put out (thank you @willesworld), and finding out Twitter loves Screwed. Those are the top three moments of the year. The dramatic in me would put them in the top 15 moments of my life, but I know that's just the 2am talking.

AO3 Wrapped
How many words have you written this year? 143.349 published on AO3. Quite a lot unpublished. Quite a lot for other things.
How many works did you publish this year? 10
What work are you most proud of (regardless of kudos/hits)? I think it’s One, two, three, four, five, sex on my mind aka sex shop au. This was such a ridiculous idea and we executed it with a passion and fun level that just made it irresistibly fun.
What work of yours has the most hits?
As this was the year of the red white and royal blue movie astoundingly the one fic I wrote for the fandom, Midnight Icecream, won by nearly double the hits than my others.
What work of yours got more feedback than you expected? Sex shop au. Normally people comment less on E-rated fics.
Favorite title you used? Nothing here to fear.
If you use song lyrics, which artist’s songs did you pull from the most? Nothing here to fear is from a Tori Amos song called Wednesday Also Take Me on is naturally from A-Has Take on Me. The Prince and the Popstar had a lot of lyrics and artists too. Check out the playlist for this one.
Pairing you wrote the most for this year?/ Favorite pairing you wrote for this year? Wilmon
What work was the quickest to write? I think You’re the cutest Jailbird I have ever seen was extremely fast.
What work took you the longest to write? The Prince and the Popstar, because me and the lovely @pagegirlintraining were just insanely busy.
How many WIPs do you have in your docs for next year? Wednesday AU and half an idea about Burlesque style barkeeper Wille.
What’s your longest work of the year? The Prince and the Popstar
What’s your shortest work of the year? Take me on
What WIP are you taking into next year with you? Wednesday AU. I promise I am going to finish it one day.
What’s your most common “Additional Tags” tag? Alternative Universe
Your favorite character to write this year? Simon as Wednesday probably.
What’s one pairing you want to explore next year? Wilmon all the way to the end baby. Let’s see if we need fix-it’s after season 3.
Which work of yours have you reread the most? I do not reread my own work in general. But I reread comfort pics like Oh Christmas Tree by @ishotforthestars.
How many kudos in total did you get this year? 2.983
Which work has the most comments? This year The Prince and the Popstar.
Did you do any collaborative works this year? I wrote four amazing fics with @pagegirlintraining and one lovely fever dream of a collab with @ishotforthestars.
Did you write any gifts this year? Yes, I wrote five: One, two, three, four, five, sex on my mind for @ishotforthestars Love is everything, stupid for @girls-are-weird Midnight icecream (Red, white and royal blue) for @rmd-writes Take me on for @pagegirlintraining Slipping’ into Christmas for @piebingo
Did you receive any gifts this year? Yes three lovely ones: Christmas Basket by @tuiiii En-Garde by @girls-are-weird Killing me softly (WIP) by @pagegirlintraining and @ishotforthestars
What’s your most common category? m/m
What do you listen to while writing? This might sound weird but it totally depends on my mood and what I am writing: sometimes I do listen to music, sometimes I even have dedicated playlists. But sometimes I listen to a movie from the genre I am writing or to old John Oliver episodes…
Favourite work you wrote this year? I have to name two, I can’t chose. It’s either The Prince and the Popstar or Sex Shop AU.
Favorite line/passage you wrote this year?
“Simon, we are an inclusive group. It’s an adult queer romance book club, I doubt that anything you are wearing could–” Wille trails off with a splutter and stares at him as Simon opens his coat and shrugs out of it. Simon doesn’t know if he should feel self-conscious or proud that he made an obvious man of words lose them with cutout tights and a glittery mesh top under his big, violet fleece scarf. It really does leave very little to the imagination, he thinks to himself as he unwraps the fleece. Wille clears his throat, squeezes out “I’ll get you a hoodie,” and turns on his heel to speed walk to the other direction of the shop.
29. Biggest surprise while writing this year? How well all four coops with @pagegirlinwriting went and how much better of a writer it made me. It challenges you if you have to keep up to another excellent writer.
