April 21 online workshop will provide an overview for early and mid-career filmmakers and media artists wishing to improve their fundraising skills.

New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) is pleased to present “Film Pitches and Grant Applications: What Funders Really Want to Know, and Why” for early and mid-career filmmakers and media artists on Tuesday, April 21 from 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM EST. The workshop, presented by NYFA Coach and Media Specialist Matthew Seig, is part of our Online Learning Initiative that provides professional development workshops to artists and creatives nationally and internationally through a webinar platform.

Workshop Description: Your letters of introduction and grant applications do more than just describe what your project is and who you are. They are a window into your skills, the viability of your project, and your professional and personal profile. We are going to talk about all of this, and some of the important factors that will govern your success, in “Film Pitches and Applications: What Funders Really Want to Know, and Why.” Regardless of whether your project is nonprofit or for-profit in nature, many of the same practices are important to both.

Topics will include:

The format: Do you understand the rules and standards of the community?

The narrative: Are you really a storyteller?

The budget: Does it tell the same story as your narrative?

The outreach and distribution: Who is your audience specifically?

The biography: Why is this the right project for you right now, and what is your network?

The team: Do they complement and elevate you, your project, and your network?

This workshop will be recorded and shared with all previously-registered participants after the session concludes. It will be available for viewing up to one month after the workshop date.

*NYFA’s mission to empower working artists and emerging arts organizations across all disciplines at critical stages in their creative lives and professional/organizational development. We aim to be a resource to artists, arts administrators, and students everywhere, especially when so many in our creative community are reeling from lost jobs, opportunities, and income as a result of the coronavirus crisis. As such, we are taking action in a variety of ways including waiving registration fees on our webinars.

Presenter’s Bio: A Media Specialist at NYFA, Matthew Seig is an experienced producer and production executive for film and television, director of documentary films, film programmer, exhibitor, and rights licensor. He manages a library of copyrights including those belonging to the late producer/director Robert Altman. Seig helped establish the Altman Archive at the University of Michigan, and edited a book about Altman’s life and films that was published by Abrams Books in 2014.

For NYFA and with support from the National Endowment for the Arts, he produced a series of interviews with independent filmmakers on the subject of building audiences—one of the many skills that funders look at when considering financial backing for a filmmaker—that were conducted by Eugene Hernandez of the Film Society of Lincoln Center. In recent years, Seig has spoken about and moderated panels on fundraising for filmmakers at The Foundation Center, Producers Guild of America, Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema, and others.

Our 2020 Spring workshop series highlights NYFA Coaching, a professional development service that offers access to one-on-one individual guidance from a variety of arts professionals, including NYFA staff.

DC Screenplay Pitches

Fam! I want to be a screenwriter for DC so badly! I’m working on a couple of fan scripts right now but I just have so many ideas bustling around in my head that I need to write them down! Plus, I also want opinions from the fandom! Please let me know what you think!

1. “Raven” (Tv Series) - An HBO style television show that follows a 23 year old Rachel Roth trying to live life as a human 5 years following her falling under Trigon’s influence and attacking the Titans. She tries to leave her hero identity behind but is forced to take up the mantel again when the Church of Blood starts kidnapping girls to turn them into brides for Trigon. Once she turns into Raven, she cannot go back.

2. “Batwoman” (Tv Series) - Either HBO or Streaming platform. It follows the origin story and growth of Kate Kane into becoming Batwoman. Each series will feature some of her famous story arcs. Plus it will feature a few interactions with the Bat family.

3. Titans (Movies) - TBH I have an idea for a whole DCEU series but here are the Titan arcs.

3.1 Titans - A villain displaces the Justice League into prisons outside of reality. Nightwing, Donna Troy, and Kid Flash band together to try to rescue their mentors. On the way, they recruit Starfire, Beast Boy, and Raven. The underestimated team must learn to work together if they want to save their mentors and the rest of the world.

3.2 Titans: The Ravager - Nightwing and Donna Troy try their hand at being team leaders of the Titans from the last film. They are also recruiting and training new members, Robin (Tim Drake), Bunker, Super Boy, Wonder Girl, and Terra. The Titans are on a mission to stop Hive’s illegal smuggling of Alien Weapons. Their obstacle is The Ravager ( Grant Wilson) who is recruited by Hive to destroy the Titans.

3.3 Titans: The Judas Contract - The Titan’s mission is to shut down the Hive organization. Their Obstacle is Deathstroke who is hellbent on seeking revenge for his son’s death. Terra proves to be a traitor. Her actions invoke fatal consequences.

3.4 Titans: Fallout - Many members of the Titans leave following the deaths of Donna, Super Boy and Terra. Raven and Beast Boy try to lead a new group of Titans as they investigate the kidnappings of teenagers. Their consistent failures results in Beastboy and the Justice League shutting down the Titans. Raven continues to investigate the missing teens case despite this. She rallies Robin and Kid Flash to answer a distress call from Bunker in Mexico. They successfully prevent the kidnapping of more teens. However they are attacked by Connor Kent as Superboy Prime. They engage in a near fatal battle where they need to be rescued by the Justice League. The league tries to reprimand Raven for her action by forcing her to make a public address stating the end of the Titans. She publicly defies them which results in her arrest. Nightwing, Robin, Kid Flash, and Bunker discover the League’s plan to kill Connor should he appear again. They stage a breakout of Raven and become outlaws to the Justice League.

3.5 Titans vs. The Justice League - The Titans are on the run from the league. They try to find the location of Connor so that they can turn him to the good side. On the way they recruit Blue Beetle. He agrees to join them after his sister is kidnapped by Lex Luthor who is responsible for the previous kidnappings and the creation of Superboy Prime. They are confronted by the league and engage in battle. A confrontation with Beastboy forces Raven to turn over to her darkside. This leads to a climatic battle of full demon Raven vs Superboy Prime. The two teams are forced to work together to stop them.

I have so many more, but it’s almost 2 am! Hopefully I can get to a point where I can post my screenplays!
