Book Review 7 - Empress of Forever by Max Gladstone

Okay, once again trying to get back on the horse of keeping up with these reviews. So, I’m generally a massive fan of Gladstone’s stuff, and having finished this I have now read every book he’s published that isn’t part of some massive series (which, sorry, but no). Also, it’s quite literally about a lesbian in space and there are lots of atrocities, so it’s so incredibly on-theme for this blog I was basically obligated to read it at some point.

Honestly, I was kind of disappointed? Not that the book was bad – it really was an enjoyable read, I promise – but it really didn’t live up to the rest of Gladstone’s stuff? Now, maybe I’d have appreciated it more if I was more familiar with Journey to the West, but still. A big part of it was the characters, I think – compared to Gladstone’s other work they’re just so obviously narrative devices and not people. The plot is fine, though the big second reveal was so obvious that I didn’t realize it was suppossed to be surprising, and the overall pacing was really poorly suited to the medium. The descriptions and general High Space Opera aesthetic/vibes was sublime though, I’m such a sucker for stuff that’s basically just chrome-accented magic thrown around with wild abandon.

Now, the book is clearly a very, very, very loose (like ‘in the same way Dragonball is’) take on Journey to the West. I, knowing almost nothing about Journey except the general synopsis and third-order cultural references and influences, am almost certainly not in a position to properly appreciate this, but as a general rule I think it’s fun and cute when people do shit like this, in the same way that my favourite modern day Shakespeare adaptation is She’s The Man. But also I kind of think it’s the reason the book’s pacing is so weird?

Which is to say, the book has a very episodic structure, with the heroine and her crazy powerful space-pirate demigod magically-bound-slave/travelling companion and all the other weird and wonderful friends they pick up along the way going from place to place and meeting people and having personal growth and getting into misadventures. These are without question the best part of the book, but quite a few of them are also unfortunately compressed by the tyranny of page count, without the character beats getting the space to breathe they deserve. (The actual plot has this problem even worse – the entire final confrontation and denouncement got like 20 pages?) This is not a story that should have been told in a single book – it should have been told in a luxuriously animated incredibly over-the-top two season adventure serial made of 2-3 episode mini-arcs. Tell me I’m wrong.

The characters themselves are – look, they’re fun. They’re so much fun. The actual heroine far less than the rest of the supporting cast, but even her. But they’re just very...archtypal? They’re clearly and obviously characters, bundles of tropes and narratives roles and aesthetics, with only the barest performance of being people? Which is honestly pretty surprising, because I’m coming to this from Last Exit which, say whatever you want about them, that was full of fucking specific people with incredible attention paid to their particular psychologies and damage. Whereas everyone in this just felt kind of broadly written.

(Also, much like how Last Exit screamed that it was written during the Trump Administration with every word, this is very clearly a book conceived and written while Obama was president)

All this sounds very negative, because I’m a naturally miserable person, but I really should say that I did enjoy reading this book. Gladstone is up there with Valente and Miller as my favourite authors writing in terms of sentence-to-sentence prose, and the gloriously self-indulgent semi-mythical space opera landscapes and creatures and battles were an absolute joy to read. The Mirrorfaith and Pride and Orn and all the rest are all just very vividly realized and I want to see concept art of them for a triple A video game or something.

For all that the cast was pretty broadly written, I did enjoy spending time in all of their heads – though it might not say great things about the book overall that the single most affecting and beautiful set-piece by far was the one that Vivian wasn’t a part of.

Anyways, overall it was a fun book, would have been a better anime. Also, unrelated to everything above – Vivian and Zanji’s dynamic and relationship would have been textbook 101 inarguable queerbaiting if Vivian didn’t also get a (different) girlfriend she fucked on screen. I just find this kind of funny to think about.

This one is more for entertainment purposes (and it even gets mentioned in longfic).

It's been pointed out that Marik likes books. He probably got tired of looking over scrolls, but he actually loves to read. During the early stages of creating his criminal organization, he would go to bookstores and libraries to get a basic grasp of common languages. One of those being English. In his stubbornness to try and do things for himself (without needing to rely on Odion or the Rod), he attempted to ask for such a book on his own. Cue him becoming the owner of the complete works of William Shakespeare.

I think you can see where this is going.

So my uncommon HC for him is that he is fluent in Shakespearian English.

Please note: I had two teens in school at the time. They walked past while I was making my search. They both seemed to know the answer, as they were giving me a list of sites to visit that had complete 'how to make at home' lists. No, it was not that surprising coming from them.

Honestly, I get so few that I love them all, but if I had to pick a type that's my favorite...the ones that point out that little subtle detail (whether intended or not). I love throwing little hints in my longer fics, and when someone spots it and asks questions, I just wanna scream and word vomit spoilers (but I am good about not doing that last part). I think I've only gotten maybe 1 or 2 that pointed out something I hinted at.

A close tie for favorite is getting good comments about writing something that is relatable to the reader, like this one from TKB 2nd chance:

If I open and see wall of text, no paragraph breaks, I hit the back button. I just...cannot. I can do all lowercase. I can suffer through typo hell (within reason). I can even avoid eye-twitching inaccuracies (there are a few that make my brain scream, but I just carry on).

I CANNOT ignore someone writing a wall of text without a single break for changed PoV, dialogue, or basic punctuation. If I am forced to read that I will cry.

Festivids Rec List, But Make It Horny (Part 1)

So this year I am the extremely lucky recipient of three wonderful Festivids, and I could not be happier! They all understood exactly what I love about the sources I request, they have excellent music choices and are beautifully made, and, to my delight, they are all horny as hell! And in wildly different ways, no less! So when I was thinking about making a vid rec list I kept thinking about my amazing, sexy gifts, and somehow what I ended up making instead was a list of this year’s horniest festivids, ranked from normal vanilla horniness to kinky/bizarre/fucked up as hell horniness. So uuuh… if anyone reads this, enjoy I guess?

15. Ruin My Life (Rebecca Ferguson RPF) This vid is a short and sweet bit of pure Rebecca Ferguson thirst, and I’m here for it. Nothing too out there, just some classic lusting after a hot celebrity. Definitely the low extreme of the overt-kink-o-meter, but no less horny for it. 14. I Just Want Your Extra Time (Our Flag Means Death RPF) Another RPF entry, this one isn’t quite as thirsty as the previous entry, but it’s set to Kiss which is an incredibly sexy song, and it features the super-hot cast of OFMD. Also, whether you are in favor of the practice or not, shipping two real people is definitely straying a little further from pure vanilla than just being horny for one celeb. 13. Satisfaction (The Quick and the Dead) I’d say that horniness isn’t the main point of this delightful vid (that would be revenge), but it is all about Sharon Stone’s character, and she’s a total smoke show in this movie. Oh and there’s also the part where she fucks a preacher (Russel Crowe) in handcuffs and this vid is kind enough to give us a close up on him picking her up with his handcuff-clad hands by her leather-clad ass at 2:10 so that’s just an objectively good thing. (Also a quick shout out to Raising Hell – it didn’t seem horny enough to include, and I know nothing about the fandom, but a nun does certainly seem to have sex in it. Possibly several times) 12. Drink You Sober, Sucker, With You a Girl Could Get Bolder, & Believe in You (Bound) I could not be happier with the fact that there are four gorgeous Bound vids this year, but I’ve lumped them together lest they completely overwhelm my list. Drink You Sober (a beautiful, sexy, amazing gift for me!!!) and Sucker are the hornier of the four, but that’s mostly to say the other two have more varied content. Honestly they’re all hot as hell and feature lesbian sex very, very prominently. While there’s nothing overtly kinky shown, they get a lot of points for how wild and transgressive it was for two (trans women to make a movie with explicit lesbian sex where the lesbians get to be happy in the 90s. Also Violet is an unapologetically horny femme top and we love to see it. 11. Magnetic (Romeo+Juliet) & Boys Keep Swinging (As You Like It) I’ve also decided to lump these two together because they’re both a ton of fun, they’re both Shakespeare, and they both have the MOST gender imaginable and I love it. Also I couldn’t decide which to put above which. Magnetic features Harold Perrineau’s Mercutio while Boys Keep Swinging showcases a whole bunch of Rosalinds and everyone in both vids is just throwing the gender binary right the fuck out the window and if I may say so, that is very hot of them. Magnetic is definitely the hornier of the two, but on sheer gender-fuckery points alone they deserve to share this slot. 10. I Like That & I’m That Queer (Janelle Monáe RPF) Another two I couldn’t separate: the two wonderful vids all about the gorgeous, talented, non-binary, bisexual icon, Janelle Monáe! These are both excellent tributes to Janelle and her queerness and her artistry……. Aaaand they’re both super hot. They rank this high on the kink-o-meter because a truly ridiculous number of Janelle Monáe’s music videos feature either explicit or heavily implied orgies or threesomes and also I Like That is I believe the only vid of the year to have sex toys in it. 9. The Shape of You (The Pirate) Speaking of bizarre! I have not seen this movie, so I figure the tags on this one can do a better job explaining its place on the list than I can: hypnotism, pirate dubcon roleplay, sword spanking, elaborate sexual fantasies about Gene Kelly in a skimpy little outfit, and a wild trick with a cigarette. And BOY does it deliver on all those fronts. Whatever weird-ass kink is going on in this movie and this vid, I am living for it. Other things I’m living for include Gene Kelly’s butt and also the aforementioned cigarette trick.

as you can see I was a bit inspired :D my very first au! It was super fun.

The first time she sees him, she's trying to take a picture of the Colosseum, and he won't move out of the frame. He's not even taking pictures, he's alternating between looking at the map in his hands and at the amphitheatre in front of him, probably trying to picture the whole building as it used to stand centuries ago. She watches him as he notices she's waiting to take a picture, making a vague hand gesture before moving out of the way. She nods to say thank you, and he smiles before walking away, trying to shield himself from the italian sun. Her pictures don't do justice to the building standing in front of her, but she doesn't really care, so happy she's finally here and determined to enjoy every single minute.

The second time she sees him, she's getting out of Notre-Dame cathedral, feeling calm and at peace after talking to God in such a historical landmark. It's almost sunset, and he's leaning on the railway of a bridge, looking pensively at the Seine. She stops in her tracks, trying to make sure it's the same guy, and sure enough, the buzzed hair, the black messenger bag, the red sneakers tell her that he is indeed the same man she saw in Italy. She's weirded out, but well, coincidences happen. Why wouldn't two tourists meet in two of the most touristic places in Europe? So she crosses the bridge towards the Quartier Latin, making a pit stop at Shakespeare & Company (because who can resist a good bookstore facing the Seine?), and she misses the way his eyes find her and watch her walk away.

The third time she seems him though, she's starting to get freaked out. While the City is never void of tourists, it's also not the most obvious of places to visit in London, and the chances they would both book a ticket to get at the top of the Sky Garden, to admire the British capital from above, on the same day and at the same time, are quite honestly very low.

She's usually shy, but she's also usually curious, so she gathers all of her courage and marches towards him as he's taking in the view on the platform deck.

"Are you stalking me?"

"Am I...?"

"Stalking me. I'm pretty sure I've seen you in Rome and in Paris, and now here, and it's getting really weird."

"Now who sounds like a stalker?"

She rolls her eyes as he laughs, taking in his eyes, and his smile, and the way his shoulders move for the first time.

"I'm flattered I'm so memorable, but no, no stalking, I swear. Just a guy making his way through Europe. Like you?"

She doesn't know why, because this guy could be a psychopath after all (her ears ring with all of the advice her mom gave her before leaving, don't talk to strange men, stay safe, it's dangerous to travel alone), but they start talking.

They're still talking as they make their way downstairs, cross London Bridge, walk along the Thames on the Southbank before ending up in a pub. Jackson Avery, from Boston, tells her he's here because he has just finished college and that this trip is his grandfather's notion of a Grand Tour, sending him to Europe to broaden his mind and perfect his education (the only education he got so far though, he admits, is learning how to ask for a beer in five different languages). April Kepner, of Moline, Ohio, tells him that she's saved up for two years to go on this trip with her sister, but Alice's time off work was cancelled, and the tickets were non-refundable, so she went by herself and doesn't regret it.

They talk for hours, and through them all, she's trying to decide if all of their meetings are only a result of some random coincidences, of a complete lack of originality in their itinerary.

Hours later, in his hotel room, when he's moving inside her and she's gently biting his neck, she comes to the conclusion that she wouldn't be mad if they were the result of something bigger.

ferris bueller's day off - this is just a good time all the way through. shenanigans all the way around no real problems at all, and a fun musical number for no reason. 10/10

🎥song that paints a picture in my mind: I had such a hard time with this question because I felt like a story song or a musical theater song would be “cheating”.

I am just going to go with “Palmcorder Yajna” by the Mountain Goats because it’s both very explicit and very... not at the same time. Like it’s very easy to understand once you know what all the references are referencing.

Either way, it’s evocative for sure.

😢song that makes you cry: “Unlikely Lovers” from Falsettos. At this point in the musical, the character Whizzer is dying of AIDS and his partner and their friends visit him in the hospital. The line “and we vow that we will buy the farm arm in arm” tends to be where I lose it. Even if the context wasn’t so crushing the harmony at the point alone would bring me to tears.

💖 guilty pleasure song: Now I like to say that I don’t believe in guilty pleasures because you shouldn’t feel guilty for enjoying things regardless of what others think…. but if I had to pick I would say Not the Boy Next Door— the glee cast recording by Chris Colfer. I know glee is categorically Not Good and people mock it relentlessly. And a lot of it is deserved because... woof.

And yet, it was very important to me as a child in the conservative rural midwest. Honestly glee was actually they first ever representation I can remember seeing at like 9 (I think?) years old. Of course my parents made me turn it off because a gay people were “disgusting” …but I still remembered how when Kurt came out, his dad told him he loved him and that it was okay. And that planted in me a seed of an idea of a belief that maybe my parents weren’t right about everything. And, you know what? By the time I realized that I am gay the idea didn’t automatically make me hate myself. Because I had been told just once in an incredibly crucial moment that it is okay. So yeah. Glee is important actually.

And Chris Colfer is just simply an incredible performer. I love his voice. He kills this song.

📚 song/album you could write a term paper on: Sunday from tick tick boom (specifically the 2021 movie adaptation directed by Lin Manuel Miranda)

Abridged term paper as follows:

To understand the brilliance of this song and the emotional sucker punch it carries you need to know a bit of musical theater history. So let’s start with the place that makes the most sense, with “god” himself-- Stephen Sondheim.

Sondheim was one of the most (if not THE most) respected composers and lyricists in musical theater history. I cannot think of any singular person who has impacted their chosen art form to the same massive extent as Steve impacted musical theater. To compare him to Shakespeare is not an exaggeration. He was revered and beloved almost universally within the theater community, not only for his genius but for who he was as a person. He was known as an excellent teacher and mentor (just watch him instruct a college student attempting to sing one of the most difficult songs he ever wrote/one of the most difficult songs in musical theater here) and for answering quite literally every single one of the thousands upon thousands of pieces of fan-mail he received.

One of his beloved musicals and the show he described as being his “most autobiographical”/the one that he put the most of himself into, was Sunday in the Park with George. It was inspired by the painting A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte by Georges Seurat, though the story is largely fictionalized.

The themes of Sunday in the Park with George center around what it means to be an artist, the desire to leave a legacy, and making choices between one’s creative work vs one’s relationships. Act one closes with the song “Sunday” in which George makes order out of the chaos of life and places the final touches to his masterpiece, capturing a perfect moment, and cementing his legacy, forever.

With the background laid, let us move on to talking about Jonathan Larson, one of the young writers Sondheim mentored who went on to do great work.

Jonathan is best known for writing the book, music, and lyrics for Rent-- a musical which won several Tony Awards, including Best Musical; the Pulitzer Prize for Drama; ran for twelve years on Broadway; influenced the creation of a new sub-genre of musical; and became massively popular and iconic, not only in the theater world but in popular culture as well. However, Jonathan was never able to see his work become a success as he tragically died of an aortic dissection on the morning that Rent was to perform its first preview performance. He was only thirty-five years old.

Jonathan struggled his entire professional career to achieve recognition from the world at large, something that he expressed in his own semi-autobiographical piece Tick, Tick... Boom! The musical was originally formatted as a “rock monologue” that Jon performed himself, though it has seen many revisions since his death, eventually turning it into the fully-formed musical it is today.

The show begins with Jonathan discussing his fear of turning thirty. The theme of "running out of time” was first introduced to the piece by Jonathan himself to illustrate his fear of getting older, but it was hugely emphasized in later productions by writers and directors who knew that he never would. Today, the looming sense of some inescapable fate pervades throughout the show as viewers know what is coming and are helpless to stop it. Jonathan will become famous and respected and beloved, but he will never see it. While everyone in the show assures him that he is still young and has a bright future ahead of him, we know differently. He is running out of time. He only has five years left.

In this sad way, the show that originally began as a piece by a young man fighting for his future has become a bittersweet legacy we look back on, making meaning out of Jonathan’s work that he would never realize was there. This is exemplified nowhere better than in the song “Sunday”.

“Sunday” began as a simple parody of Sondheim’s “Sunday”, recognizable for what it is from the first few notes and becoming clearer and clearer as the song progresses. The original joke of the piece was that Jonathan was arranging the patrons and crappy interior of the diner where he worked in the same way that George was constructing his masterpiece, drawing a comparison between the mundane (or even ugly) and something beautiful.

To make it meta: in Jonathan’s semi-autobiographical musical about his struggles as an artist, he referenced his mentor’s semi-autobiographical musical about the struggles of being an artist. Of course, in the parody, Jon cast himself as the pale imitation of great art, suggesting he was nothing in comparison. It was light-hearted, fun, and, at the time, a pretty recent/topical reference to make. It was never meant to be anything more than a joke.

But then Jonathan left a legacy.

In the 2021 film, Lin Manuel Miranda made phenomenal directorial decisions in a dozen different places but “Sunday” was his home run. He transformed the song from a joke to the pinnacle of what Tick, Tick...Boom! has become, a tribute to the memory of Jonathan Larson.

Throughout the movie, there are cameos of countless famous Broadway figures, but those that appear in the diner scene and utilized perfectly. From true veteran legends, to modern celebrities, to original cast members of Rent, the diner is packed with heroes of the stage. As the song progresses they join in behind Jon to form an inter-generational choir, representing the past, present, and future of musical theater. You can see the arch of the line passing down, the years of history represented and the lives changed. And the hope that radiates toward the future.

A passion and joy for musical theater was passed from Sondheim onto Jonathan, and he went forward to inspire a new generation of theater kids-- including Lin Manuel Miranda. Who, regardless of your personal feelings about him, has already made enormous impact on the world of musical theater and lit the flame for another generation of kids.

That’s what this moment means.

It’s a celebration and a thank you and an honoring of our history, of those that came before us and inspired us, of those who are our future.

There is a moment that is always guaranteed to bring me to tears. As the song nears its peak, “Jon” (played by Andrew Garfield, who should have won an Oscar damn it) takes the hand of legend Bernadette Peters, who originated the role of Dot in Sunday in the Park with George (the main female character, the woman in purple in the painting). She is dressed similarly to her character, including her hat (trust me, the hat is important) and he ushers her into her place in the light. He places his hands over his heart, complete adoration in his eyes, and he bows to her. It’s a sign of utmost respect, of both Jon (the real Jon) acknowledging the legend of Sondheim that came before him, and Lin nodding to both Jon and Steve. It’s all of us watching and wishing we got the chance to say thank you to Steve and Jon and all the others who we look up to and adore.

It’s saying, Jonathan, you didn’t get to see it, but you are remembered. You are loved. You are honored.

You are forever.

hollow crown henry v!

i feel it's best to start with film versions

because it's so easy for them to pale in comparison with stage versions which are just so dynamic

confession time...i've never seen henry v!

i think i have seen fragments of branagh's film in the midst of a high school emma thompson situation

i know the gist of it in that there's a battle he gives a speech and he marries france (princess of)

oh and the chorus does a bit

speaking of i kinda can't bear to hear the chorus as a voice over

like i'm too attached to it as an article of theatre asking an audience to use their goddamn imaginations

that to have something to look at during it feels...incorrect

usually i don't go here's what i would have done but i definitely think it could have worked over a black screen

just like make the film audience do some work for a second before just showing it all

this red leather jacket though is doing the lord's work

This should not come as a surprise to me or you at all. At first, I thought you were just some dumb hall mate that was always dropping his shampoo bottle while his arms were filled with the rest of his shower necessities because he never bothered to buy a shower caddy. Two years later, and somehow, you haven’t found a new best friend to replace me yet.

Remember our pact, the one we made almost a year ago? I’m sorry, but I broke it, not because I actually found another person worth breaking it for. I broke it because I realized some feelings I had been festering. So, I guess I’m not that tough after all.

I don’t even know if I love you, or even like you in that sense. But I know that I truly do value you in my life. Without you, I wouldn’t have anyone else to cry about midterms with, drink away the sorrow of failing grades, and even just eat lunch with.

You just know me best. You know how I’m like and what I like. You tease and make fun of me all the time, but you’re always the first person that gives me a shoulder to cry on, motivate me to do my best, and cheer with me when I got my first internship.

The small sparkles that blossom in my chest whenever you look me in the eyes must be temporary. It must be from your new hair cut and sudden sense of fashion. They’re only small subtle changes anyways.

Maybe a part of me does wonder what it would be like to date you. You already bring me so much joy as my best friend, how much happier could you make me as my boyfriend?

But I think that my love for exceeds past wanting romance with you, but more so, for you. I am already thankful that you’re in my life, and I hope you continue to forever be in my life.

Instead of loving me more than you already do, I want you to find someone who will make you happy, who will love and cherish you in every way possible in the ways I can’t.

“Jung Jaehyun?” Jungwoo exclaimed. “Are you an idiot? That’s her ex.”

“Okay! Yes! I reali- ow!” Mark whines as your best friend hit his shoulder, knowing that scowling the boy was not enough.

“Hey it’s okay, it wasn’t even that bad.” You casually sip on your morning coffee.

“You actually continued the date with him?” Jungwoo’s eyes widened, almost as big as bowling balls.

“Yea, we’re friends,” You emphasize, “Especially since someone always leaves on the weekends and someone else is too popular and has many friends to attend to.”

Before Jungwoo can roll his eyes, Mark catches a glance of his watch, alarmed by the time being shown.

“Oh shit,” Mark hurriedly packs his things. “I’m late for class, I’ll see you guys during our two hour gap right?” You and Jungwoo nod in unison as you watch the rushed boy dash off towards the tall buildings.

Your best friend clears his throat, “so are you two planning on getting back together? I really thought you and that Jisung kid were going to hit it off. The guy looks at you with hearts in his eyes and attentive ears.”

Scoffing, the morning sun is dazzling on Jungwoo’s eyes, nose, and lips. There is a brief moment of examination when you take in the change in his outfit choice, him wearing jeans instead of grey sweat shorts.

It’s almost as if Jungwoo styled his hair differently today as well, the part in his hair now sways slightly off the center. He looks good today, almost as if you were finding your platonic perspective on your best friend shifting to attraction.

Jungwoo peers over at you when you don’t answer his question and he waves a hand in your dazed face. With an immediate choke on your coffee, you snap out of it all.

“No! I told him we weren’t getting back together, as flirty as he always is. And Jisung,” an exasperated sigh draws from your lips, followed by a small pout, “the feelings I have for him are out of care, though I love spending time with him. Time just stops and we’re in our own little world, but to be together in the real world… it’s difficult for my heart to say.”

Jungwoo rolls his eyes at the poetry that endlessly spews from your mouth.

“Okay, Shakespeare. Don't worry, you’ll find someone to grant your ridiculous fairytale romance one day. And since I know you best, I’ll make sure that the person comes into your life riding on a majestic horse to sweep you off of your feet.”

The sweet smile does not match the teasing tone, but instead reminds you of sincerity. There is this unrecognizable tingly sparkle that runs across your chest when you two catch each other’s eyes.

A tiny voice in your head wonders, could it be you, Kim Jungwoo? Despite not knowing how to ride a horse, he did mention how he knows you best.

He knows everything about your interests, your taste, your habits. He’s the perfect balance of sweet and salty. Your number one supporter, your number one speed dial. Your best friend, as if he didn’t already play that role too perfectly.

The happiness Jungwoo warms you with is already delightful, so could limits be tested to see if it would be better in a relationship? It is definitely an option to be explored.

“Let’s make a pact.” It’s music to his ears, the curious boy loves hearing a new proposal. A mischievous grin is noted, along with the gleam that glosses over his eyes. “If we’re both single by the time we graduate college, we’ll date each other.”

“On one condition,” your best friend starts, the evil smile not fading, “the pact is broken if one of us develops feelings for the other person before graduation.”

Jungwoo proposes a challenge that might actually cause you to lose. The unsettling drop in your stomach makes you want to hurl, and it’s hard to swallow your pride.

“Like I would actually like you?” The quiver in your lip initiates Jungwoo to chuckle.

He sees right through your tough act, and knows exactly how to taunt you. “Sometimes I catch you staring at me like how Jisung stares at you.” Jungwoo playfully pushes your buttons, and before you can protest, his hands run through his hair coolly.

“Right, like how you look at me like how I look at Jeno.” It is semi-sarcastic and you cross your arms in defensiveness. Jungwoo shameless knows every person who has had your heart at one point, and has even teased you to the point of asking if he was your next J.

He whines cutely, as he oozes every ounce of sweetness from his crevices. The dramatic pout, the puppy dog eyes, the hands pressing his cheeks together. “You caught me red handed! The condition is more for me than for you anyways.”

The reaction he wanted is what he got when you stand speechless at your best friend’s comment. “Oh, shut up. Is it a deal?”

“Of course, my cutie pie (y/n)! You know what, I’ll stay single just so we can fulfill our pact.” Again, there is no seriousness in his happy, cheerful fun. Jungwoo is a bask in the sun, live in the moment type of person. And he sure as hell, does not think about the repercussions of his words.

“Then maybe, you can finally write about me in your little secret love letters.” Absolutely mortified, you cup his mouth quickly to avoid any other reference to your letters. You instantly regret letting him in on that secret, because honestly, you had just been giving him more ammo to use against you.

“I told you to never bring it up!” As if you aren’t embarrassed enough, you can feel the vibrations of his laughter between your fingers.

You are practically determined at this point, there is no way you are going to break the condition.

You are tougher than that, you manage to get through a high school break up with your first love. You’ve rejoined a past crush, who still has the ability to make sparkles fly.

You became a guide to a lost freshman, who you’ve grown up to love. And you simply predict, that in the future, you are going to experience more hurts in greater magnitudes.

And you’ll grow up through your experiences, but with Jungwoo right next to you. Through experiencing and learning different things about yourselves, there is no time to focus on your potential relationship with your best friend.

So maybe, just maybe! You aren’t going to fall for your best friend and break the pact early, because you’re no sucker to Kim Jungwoo.

However, you’re beginning to notice the small changes and even those have an effect on you. So possibly, it may be harder than you’d think. Because the one person that will be beside you through every heartbreak and passing crush, is always going to be him.

First fic I read for the pairing: Where Rain And Smoke Mingle by smallestbird [1k,T] It doesn't matter if they've disowned you, they're still your family. It doesn't matter how often you walk away, it still hurts. [it’s a bit dreary, but the writing style is so nice and i’m a big sucker for hurt/comfort]

Fic that really sold me on the pairing: Of Brothers and Boyfriends by Amuly [38k,E] There’s no summary on the fic, but, essentially, Remus and Sirius’s secret relationship gets found out and things get… complicated. (warning for homophobia) [My note on my ao3 bookmark pretty much sums up how I feel about this fic: Honestly one of my favorites (and one of the stories that really got me hooked on Wolfstar tbh) and I've read it at least eight times. However, I’m not entirely sure how I feel about the homophobic James Potter (even though he does come around).]

Absolute favorite fic(s) for the pairing: Text Talk by merlywhirls [141k,Not Rated] Sirius is in boarding school, Remus is in hospital, and they don't know each other until Sirius texts the wrong number. (warnings for homophobia, mentions of abuse, and homophobic language) [One of the earlier fics I read and it’s always just been one of my favorites, even though it’s been 3 years since I read it for the first time.] Harry Potter and the Live Laugh Love Sign in the Basement by loudestfandomsoftheworld [24k,T] Harry spends his summer with his fugitive godfather and his former professor who is a jobless werewolf. It's probably the best summer he's ever had. [The humor, the characterizations, their relationships, it’s all so fucking perfect!!] Go East [+Podfic] by xinasvoice [84k,E] Remus has been running for a long time. Eventually, he runs into a strange castle built by a wizard and his young apprentice. The longer he stays, the more secrets he uncovers...and the less he wants to leave. This is a novel-length adventure story that loosely follows the plot of Howl's Moving Castle. It does not require knowledge of the HMC book or movie to enjoy it. LUPIN.RJ: No, I mean why is Monty hiring a new editor in the middle of a fucking pandemic? POTTER.JF: An old friend of mine is in a tough spot and needs a job, so of course, dad is helping him out. - - - - OR A story set in the middle of the pandemic in which Sirius is hired at the Potter’s publishing company and Remus is responsible for training him. Lots of texting, lots of video calls, lots of mutual pining, and a lot of really bad literature quotes. [i’ve largely avoided quarantine au fics, but sometimes they’re so well-written and hilarious and also a texting fic and i accidentally fall in love with them, so here we are.]

Most recent fic I’ve read for the pairing: There Is No Man, However Wise by enigmaticblue [87k,T] It’s 1988, Sirius has Harry, and possession is nine-tenths of the law. [i adore a good raising harry au and i also adore the premise of the series this is in and i also adore the writing story and characterizations. 10/10]

Favorite AU(s) I’ve read for the pairing: High School AU: Likewise Variable by ssstrychnine [28k,T] James has plans, Peter is the nurse, Sirius keeps fake blood up his sleeves, and Remus just tries to stay alive. [i first read this fic in 2017 and it still lives rent free in my mind. it’s hilarious, a perfect characterization of the marauders (even tho it’s a muggle modern high school au) and adding shakespeare? just icing on the fucking cake. it’s excellent.] University AU: Wannabe Your Lover by Maraudererasmut & shadow_prince [15k,M] Somewhere in America, Fall of 1997 - Returning to University, James refused to room with Sirius in the wake of The Great Cheez-it Battle of '96. They must adjust to living with someone new, Mr. Potter worried they'd both get scurvy, James unsuccessfully continued trying to court one Lily Evans, Snape got what was coming to him, and Sirius was the most confused of them all. [this is the university experience we all wish we had, lowkey. aside from the hilarity that comes from having the marauders in a fic, it’s just cute and well-written and i love it (and southern remus??? it’s everything i never knew i needed.] Alternate Sorting AU (Slytherin Remus): Half Agony, Half Hope by Barry_Manilows_Wardrobe [21k,E] A tale wherein Sirius Black loses 750 House Points for Gryffindor. But it’s totally worth it. [listen, if, before i read this fic, you asked me if remus could’ve been a slytherin, my answer would have been “perhaps but probably not.” now, however, yeah. 100%. it’s hilarious, it’s novel (which i love to see), but it’s still the same remus and sirius and it’s excellent.] Haunted House AU: Another Day in the Sun by REwrites [19k,T] Is it haunted? I suppose that depends on who is telling the story. [really really excellent and a little haunting (pun entirely intended). it’s romantic and sweet and a little bittersweet but i adore it.]

WIP(s) I really love for the pairing: We Were Infinite by WolfstarPups90 [336k,E] “The Marauders aren’t something that will just go away once we graduate.” James continued, taking a more serious tone and addressing not only Remus, but the fear that they all had found recently in the back of their minds about what may become of them outside the walls of Hogwarts. “We’re a family. We’ve proven that again and again, haven’t we? We’re forever. Unstoppable. We’re infinite.” The full story of The Marauders from September 1st 1971 - October 31st 1981. (Heavily centered around Wolfstar and Jily in later chapter) [the first WIP i ever read (usually i stick to completed works, but this was being pretty regularly updated when i started reading it and also it’s fucking iconic so what can i say?)] Of Leaves and Stars by irrationalmoony & LadyAmina [273k,T] Almost a year out of Hogwarts, Lily finally manages to convince Sirius and James to get more acquainted with muggle technology and buy phones. Sirius, of course, texts the wrong number. [everyone is queer! (as they well should be). also: is it complete? no. has that stopped me from reading it twice? also no.]

Favorite Series for the pairing: TransVerse by picascribit [30k,E,2 works] Canon-divergent AU in which Remus is a transgender boy instead of being a werewolf. (warnings for underage, transphobia, internalized transphobia, bullying, self-harm) [i am a trans remus stan and this series is iconic, but also heed the tags kids.]

Longest fic I’ve read for the pairing: Once in a Blue Moon by FullMoonDreams [408k,M] In a world where Remus never received his Hogwarts invitation and Sirius wasn't accepted by the Gryffindors the two lonely boys become friends. A story beginning in their first year, and continuing right through Hogwarts and beyond. RLSB. [this fic emotionally ruined me,,, but like,,, in a good way, you know? i will probably never reread it because i cried for hours the first time, but the plot does live rent free in my mind (and i do have a playlist of songs that remind me of it).]

Fic(s) with some of my favorite tropes: Matchmaking: Pining, Parchment, Plotting, and Pranks by KayBee1762 [12k,T] “Idea parchment,” James said. He unfolded it and smoothed it out. “You want to get them together, right? That’s why you came to me?” “Yeah,” Lily huffed, which was ridiculous because he was right, that’s why she came to him. But it was supposed to be her idea, because she wanted to help her dear friend Remus, not James or Sirius. But it was so nice to be able to talk about this with someone, and James looked so pleased and excited. “Good,” James said. “Good, because they need to get together, they would be so happy and so good together, and Sirius will stop sighing like a lovesick puppy and just snog him instead.” In which Lily considers changing Houses, James blushes a lot, Sirius is his usual dramatic self, Remus mopes, and Peter knew everything all along. [the marauders (especially james and lily) trying to play matchmaker is one of my favorite instances of the classic matchmaking trope.] Road Trips + Bed Sharing: Of Comets and Counter-Examples by Woldy [5k,T] If the past is a foreign country, can travel help to resolve a troubled history? Dumbledore assigns Remus and Sirius a mission to explore three European cities, or perhaps to find each other. [a lovely tale of travel, reunions, comfort, friendship, and self-rediscovery. plus, travel, bed sharing, and friends to lovers??? yeah] Matchmaking (again): In The Middle by Blossomwitch [3k,Not Rated] James is the natural confidant of both Remus and Sirius. When they both swear him to secrecy on the same topic, James is stuck watching his friends pine for each other without being able to say a word to bring them together. A lesser man might shrink from the challenge of finding a way to break his promise without breaking his promise, but not James Potter! [i already did a matchmaking trope fic i know but what can i say other than the trope fucking slaps and so does this fic.]

2. What's your top 5 songs at the moment and why?

I will precursor this now with the reason I like and listen to all songs, because I can imagine very intricate fantasy worlds around them or they remind me of my favourite characters.

1. Wolf in Sheep's Clothing - Set It Off It gives me major Ariel Conroy vibes and I live for Ariel Conroy.

2. Criminal - Britney Spears Julian vibes!! It works almost all the way through for him but my favourite lines that remind me of Julian are 'he lies, he bluffs, he's unreliable' and 'the man's a snitch, he's unpredictable, he's got no conscience, he's got none, none, none'

3. Bring on the Men - Linda Eder I have a very specific fantasy that I imagine to this which I'm not going to go into details of because it's weirdddddddd but honestly, if you want me completely lost in my own head for 5 minutes, play this song.

4. Dan - Grovesnor I only listened to this song recently because Mat Baynton's in the video for it and he's the bass player/baking vocals but I actually instantly fell in love with the song, had it on repeat for days!

5. Hard to Be the Bard - Christina Borle (from 'Something Rotten') Can't lie, I listen to this song and imagine Mat Baynton playing a villain-y sexy Shakespeare and singing this but also very relatable lyrics when it comes to writing: "so you write down a word but it's not the right word so you try a new word but you hate the new word and you need a good word but you can't find the word"

6. Desribe one of your favourite people

I struggle with people, particularly in seeing the good in them so whenever I was trying to think of a 'favourite person', I kept coming up with reasons why they aren't my favourite person rather than why they were so you know, this might not be as positive as you might expect from a question involving a favourite person.

One of my favourite people in the whole world is very, very generous to me and they expect absolutely nothing back. They're very patient, especially with my mental issues which is a huge feat because they don't always understand it. They put up with so much moody, anxiety/depression based shit and yeah, sometimes take it the wrong way but a lot of the time will just sit and let me have my moment and just stay calm and accepting. They're also really funny and make me laugh at least once a day. And so fucking smart, like I can't even imagine being that smart, not like general knowledge smart but they just, idk, know things and I don't always understand and they find it cute.

14. Write a review for the last film you watched?

Oh, I don't even know what the last film I properly watched was. It might have been Shrek Goes Fourth, fuck sake.

I mean, compared to Shrek the Third, I'd say it's going more back to it's roots with much more Shrek and Shrek 2 vibes. However, I am quite biased towards this film because I'm a sucker for a 'but what if this plot point hadn't happened' and then seeing the godawful consequences of that and this film delivers that in spades. It's probably quite dark for a Shrek film actually and I do always find myself drawn towards the darkest films of a franchise. But it keeps solid Shrek humour, just less of it due to the darker tone of the film.

Verdict: 3/5, probably the third best Shrek film but you'll find you particularly like it if you're a fan of dystopian spin offs or 'what ifs' in which case, I highly recommend it (watch the other Shrek films first though so you know the characters).

Can't believe I did a year of Film and TV Studies at uni and that's the best shit I could come up with... maybe that's why I dropped out
