Have any Jinko headcanons 👀?
Hmm, no one's really asked for my headcanons before... 🤔 Apologies if this runs long. It's mostly Jin's side of things too, since we know a lot about Zuko already.
Jin is technically a war refugee, but was too young to remember much about fleeing to Ba Sing Se. In her mind, she'd never truly lived anywhere else. She'd never met a firebender before "Li" (Lee?), and hadn't had any bad experiences with the Fire Nation (that she remembered) until Azula seized control of the city.
The one, short AtLA comic where Jin appeared is not canon to me; I don't think they saw each other again before the war ended. Jin was hurt by Zuko running off, so she stayed away from the teashop. When she had the courage to go back, "Li" and "Mushi" no longer worked there. She dated around a bit, had one or maybe 2 serious relationships, but always found herself comparing them to that one memorable date.
Jin found out who Zuko really was by seeing an illustration of his face on a news bulletin or announcement poster. This comic I drew happens.😆 Zuko convinces the Earth King to make the Firelight Fountain a protected landmark.
After they officially decide to date (unless you take the reunite as elders after a lifetime apart track), they keep it secret until having what amounts to a "vacation-only relationship" wears on them. Zuko then invites Jin to stay at the Fire Palace for a spell. She loves it, but struggles to be accepted by the Fire Nation upper-crust (she wins them over). As Fire Lady, I think her strengths would be: diplomacy (with the Earth Kingdom especially), supporting refugees and impoverished citizens, and helping the Fire Lord loosen up.
Jin takes on many different jobs across her young adult years, but eventually decides to become a ceramics artist. Zuko helps with her pieces sometimes.🔥
As a final aside, I don't ascribe to the "Jin is Mako and Bolin's grandmother" theory. For one, her name is Yin, not Jin, and remembering Jin's name is as easy as popping on Tales of Ba Sing Se. If the LoK production team truly intended for them to be the same person, there's no excuse for the name mix up. And secondly, being a wildly devoted Earth Kingdom royalist is not the future I'd prefer for Jin.
Thanks for asking, @pedanticat ! Most of this isn't very cute, whoops.😅

okay sorry hi I know I just sent you an ask about my cat being alive but you’re like,, my favorite internet stranger so I thought you should know. I calmed down a little bit and read your response to my fourteen page ask
IM SO HAPPY I HYPE YOU UP‼️‼️ I love being peoples’ hypeman and you’re like,,, awesome so that’s super cool. don’t rush yourself but if you’re feeling pumped to share I will be your #1 fan. I’m probably gonna finish a little 4+1 thing and post it to my blog as a little grand reveal as snailon if that’s cool :3
ALSO I’m so happy you posted the cat thing on ao3 it was really nice and super well written and thank you for the suggestion! the cat is being washed thoroughly right now and I am on guard duty of the bathroom door. he was (we guess) stuck in the sewage of the construction sight beyond the wooded area behind our house.
SO MORE LOK THOUGHTS
you exactly caught my vibe (again) when you mentioned the insane repression mako and bolin are doing in canon. I honestly think there’s nothing more than elevator music behind bo’s eyes in canon because if the creators allowed anything else it would solely be The Horrors and they needed someone on that godforsaken team to be emotionally available and somewhat happy. and try as he might, mako will always be uncontrollably feral. I know by b4 he just has an all out brawl every morning fighting to get his hair presentable. give up and be the scraggly, strange detective that somehow knows everything that you were always meant to be.
which, for the record, is not to say I like his hair. I want him to grow it out more so he stops looking so fucking dumb with his stupid pointy ass hair (I really really really hate mako’s hair) but I also think it would grow out kind of wavy/curly which. yeah. I will be coming back to this later when I yap about avatar mako btw.
also PLEASE PLEASE PLEASEEE write mako absolutely losing his shit he 100% so much deserves that. he cries maybe once yearly and it is scheduled so I think he should get to murder y’know. just a little bit. he’s just a girl (insert sad coquette hamster)
makos hand being fucked up is the Vision. you understand so much. the gloves are so suspicious (the same way the shirt-on-at-the-sauna is in the comics. i see you, you little transmasc) and going off the logic of the last ep that with enough charge/consistency, lightning output can scar/mangle the exit point of the bender so. mako learning to use his bending mostly on his own fucking up and rocking his own shit until zolt shoves someone over to go clean up the rookie cause finding someone new is a pain. of course it’s a patch job (as you mentioned everything for them would be) so I imagine it’s like. pretty mangled. like stuff just slightly out of place, lots of raised skin and discolored patches and generally like uncomfortable to look at. I’d bet (like you said) bolin is really the only one he’d trust to see his hands unless makorrasami became like. a thing.
also if you have any,, fic recs,, I would be very not opposed,,,,,
OKAY OKAY SO AVATAR MAKO THOUGHTS. I’m actually going insane about this au.
so for 1: this idea was mostly a silly little ha-ha but imagine raava gets really fucking confused being in their first ever mixed kid and just. skips right back to air after mako. would that not be the funniest shit ever. like the earth kingdom would already be pressed that their go was a mixed kid who was a criminal firebender for the first bit of his life, but imagine how the FIRE NATION feels having their avatar “skipped over” because mako (again, CRIMINAL FIREBENDER) was technically a fn avatar.
and this keeps happening. more mixed kids. mixed kids out of the cycle ordered pairs become avatar. raava gets fucking lost. everyone loses track of whose element is next and world leaders everywhere are sobbing. mako would be so very pleased with himself. he and the half-avatar water tribe person would be clinking together glasses of alcohol in heaving and watching it all go down.
I was also thinking about this half-avatar playing a role in mako’s journey. They would be roughly fifteen years younger than the gaang, so it would make sense for them to still be alive (since raava could return to aang and still maintain them well enough) during mako’s era. do you think they could take on a mentor or distant relative role for mako? maybe being half-avatar would make them the world’s only dual bender, and they would understand mako’s struggle with wielding more than one element in a way no one else would be able to. bonus points if the styles they maintain are either earth and fire or the ‘opposite’ elements (like air+earth/water+fire—water+fire would be good to use to teach balance and that fire is not only to harm but to nurture, and that water parallels it as not only to nurture but to harm)
and that brings me to my third thought; both avatars followed in series have had a conflict or struggle with their bending. aang had to learn the other three types of bending—his conflict was finding teachers. korra needed to find it in herself to flow with the winds of airbending. but copying korra would be lame. so what’s mako’s conflict?
there’s where my pitch comes in (and kind of the point of the half-avatar); mako figured out how to use air, earth, and water as well as he uses fire (if with less refinement) within maybe a week (if that) of being discovered as the avatar. he’s a scraggly street kid used to clawing at what he can get and holding on tight: being discovered means he doesn’t have a particular reason not to make use of the other elements if need be, so he figures out how.
but the key words there are if need be. he absolutely can lift a chunk of earth five times his size, or entirely soak a full grown adult in pond water, or slap someone around with a strong gust of wind or power a building for a month with a bolt of lightning. will he be doing any of this? no. not unless his or bolin’s lives or livelihoods are threatened. mako’s struggle is that outside of life-or-death combat? he’s about the same as a nonbender. because bending has always been a risk—a life threatening and life ending risk—and one he isn’t willing to take unnecessarily. his journey is learning that bending can be used for more than harm or to enforce fearful order.
fourth and kind of final thought for avatar mako for now—he’s the earth avatar in this, but he looks very fire nation in canon (at least, my understanding of ‘fire nation’ v ‘earth kingdom’ features) so I was thinking, the avatar represents the four nations (kind of five now if we’re counting republic separately) (oh my god new thought what if there was an rc avatar ‘whose avatar is it’ ‘air by my guess’ ‘nah it’s republic city’s turn now’ ‘how does that even make sense? their blood is of the four nations.’ ‘I don’t make the rules man. ask the spirits, they’re right there.’) but they always look like the nation they’re from so. what if all the avatars look a little mixed but just lean heavy into native. so mako looks like a mixed kid already (though I’d make him more ek—will specify in a sec) but then just gets more mixed from. everywhere. but it’s not even generalized like,,, he looks like he’s from specific subcultures the last avatars came from. earth part looks kyoshi even though his dad wasn’t from the island. fn part looks like caldera city even though mom wasn’t. air—less noticeable, but he looks like aang, in a way. very temple-kid-y and less nomad-y. if that makes sense. and I’d say water part is kuruk but there’s also the ‘avatars look like their past life’s lover’ so. katara (ADDING TO THE PARALLELS IM GOING INSANE)
so this is the part where I elaborate on the ‘more earth kingdom’ part of mako’s design in my head. this also is part of the avatar-looking-like-lover thing. so ek complexions are pretty ranged, but a good deal of them are darker skinned. mako’s pretty fair, but I propose as a kid whose dad is white-brown (he’s an Italian farmer boy who tans heavy and he looks brown) and is also white-brown when I spend too long outside (ten minutes) in the summer; mako who tans so quick into a more typical dark ek tone. also bolin is darker because he deserves melanin. he gets to keep gold eyes cause they’re cool but I propose.. heterochromia!!! green/gold, could be some grayish/blue? js an absolute melting pot in there. then I associate ek with less pronounced but boxier facial structure, so either his face stays like,,, long, and is softer or stays sharp and is boxier like bolin’s. honestly prefer the first one but both are neat. also hooked nose. I don’t make the rules. katara also has a hooked nose btw it’s real I saw it.
also mako and katara have the same glare (sokka told me) and they scrunch their faces up like little carbon copies of each other when they’re focused. by the way I love to parallel the shit out of katara and mako can you tell,,
I just realized I wrote a longpost length ask. I’m so sorry.
I think I had something else to say but it’s getting late and it’s a school night 4 me so I’ve gotta get to sleep.
rest well! your favorite anon,
🐌
ah hello sorry for the extremely late response snailon!
I honestly think there’s nothing more than elevator music behind bo’s eyes in canon because if the creators allowed anything else it would solely be The Horrors
tbh you're so correct about this. let bolin have Feelings, 2024!!! (i find it so interesting that the general consensus is that bolin is more well-liked by the lok fanbase, but mako's fans are deep in the trenches whereas it's a lot harder to find active bolin fans. i stay forever respectful of the even fewer of them out there. not entirely sure how to articulate it, but yeah. bolin deserves better both from canon and the fanbase and one day i'll have to deconstruct his entire existence because he's just a fascinating creature who represents sort of a paper cutout of a stereotype
which, for the record, is not to say I like [mako's] hair. I want him to grow it out more so he stops looking so fucking dumb with his stupid pointy ass hair (I really really really hate mako’s hair)
HAHA that's valid. tbh i'm pretty neutral towards it; i like s1-s3 hair better than s4 hair because while i think that mako's poor attempt to comb himself into some semblance of Proper Society is pretty accurate to his character, i'm just not a big fan of it (though the fact that it looks bad is probably a further testament to his character never finding proper integration into society)
he’s just a girl (insert sad coquette hamster)
again. coughing at the essay i'll never finish writing on this. (okay off topic but i really really love transfem mako so much but also just fem mako in general and i need to put this out into the world. early lok fandom was on a seriously good kick when they were all drawing and writing lesbian makorra is my confession. mako being a girl makes my brain whirr)
also if you have any,, fic recs,, I would be very not opposed,,,,,
fic recs list i've written up but there's a lot of other good ones out there. immediately off the top of my head, people whose writing on mako i really like in general include slacktension (incredible author & artist from original airing with a mako voice of all time and great character dynamic exploration), rockingthegraveyard (best mako & bolin dynamics), wastetimeandtype (i especially like their casual ship fics and they made me an accidental fan of huan/mako), deerstalkerdeathfrisbee (wuko author but their mako voice is impeccable), bobtailsquid/steinbecks (another author from original airing whose writing style is just so poignant and accurate to character), themanofmanyhats, and velkynkarma. idk how you feel on makorra specifically but i confess, i accidentally really do like them and there's a lot of good stuff on ao3/ffn for them that i could share :P and i too am a fan of makorrasami but tragically, there's not a lot of that out there; however, all of old_and_new_friends' makorrasami works are fantastic. they're a multishipper who writes a lot of mako and very well, and while while i haven't read a lot of their fics because not all the ships speak to me, the ones i have read are all great. so yeah i'd suggest you take a look to see if there's anything there up your alley!
raava gets really fucking confused being in their first ever mixed kid and just. skips right back to air after mako. would that not be the funniest shit ever. like the earth kingdom would already be pressed that their go was a mixed kid who was a criminal firebender for the first bit of his life, but imagine how the FIRE NATION feels having their avatar “skipped over” because mako (again, CRIMINAL FIREBENDER) was technically a fn avatar.
okay this is actually so funny what LMFAO i didn't take into consideration that the avatar of the generation being from your nation is probably generally a point of pride and that mako's general existence is like,, the greatest possible insult to that in all the ways khsjdfbhfhsdbh i might have to casually include that in some outsider pov because the sheer comedy potential oh my god
do you think they could take on a mentor or distant relative role for mako?
i realize i probably didn't word it very explicitly in my initial explanation of this au, but what i actually meant was that raava couldn't leave the non-aang host entirely until their death because her presence was vital to their living. it's casually playing off the theory that yue was meant to be the water avatar, and so she was born sickly because of the absence of spiritual energy her destiny had intended for her — that raava's presence plays a role in the sustaining of her host's life. to sum up what i mean: raava is the vital life juice infused in the destined avatars. (roughly. it's been a while since i looked at this theory lol) therefore, while they continue to live independently of aang's actual death, raava can't move onto the next avatar until this not-avatar also dies. so they are very much dead as mako's immediate predecessor. but it's a great idea and i love that your brain thinks this way!
mako’s struggle is that outside of life-or-death combat? he’s about the same as a nonbender. because bending has always been a risk—a life threatening and life ending risk—and one he isn’t willing to take unnecessarily. his journey is learning that bending can be used for more than harm or to enforce fearful order.
oh interesting take. i can see that. in planning this au, i was thinking more among the lines of him only viewing bending other than fire to be a risk, and that he only ever figured out earthbending up until the point of where the story starts, but yeah i didn't really consider which element would be his block. he's honestly a pretty versatile guy in my opinion — i feel that he moves in a very airbender way (read: korra's spiral-motions in a leaf in the wind are meant to demonstrate her picking up mako's style of deflection, evasion, and waiting to strike), but his mannerisms are very earthbender in his stability in reality/rooted nature despite his lack of general stability in life. obviously he's got the firebender in him; i think he has a lot of pent up emotions and he generally represses them very well, but when it does get unleashed then he has a very typical-firebender explosive sort of manner. (i'm still adamantly against the take that he's a hotheaded no-thoughts raging firebender man though LMAO i don't understand how it's such a thing. sorry for the tangent. i'm resigned.) and for water, i feel it's adjacent to air in being less about head-on motions, and it's pretty reflective of mako's tendancies of roundabout-ness when it comes to matters of the heart. i don't really know how to articuate it but he has the most waterbender vibe. it's the katara so what i'm saying is that i don't really see him struggling with any of the elements in the way aang struggled with earth and korra with air, and you pose an interesting point. i'm not sure if your proposal would be in line with my current planning of this au, but it's still a really interesting idea that i'll mull over! it's a neat segway into the whole amon/equalists arc that i'd never cover but would still be set in the near future and i like the concept. thank you for sharing :)
but he looks very fire nation in canon
oh yeah i agree LOL i've seen edits of switching mako & bolin's eye colors (+ that iconic screencap from s1e2) and as much as it doesn't suit him i still stand by that he SHOULD'VE had green eyes and bolin gold. it's a small detail i've seen randomly included in a couple fics from way back when and it always makes my heart happy haha. i agree that lok dropped the ball in terms of portraying all the mixed families that exist in the series and that there was so much potential there, both with mako & bolin as main cast characters and background in the kataang kids (plus by proxy the airkids) — not just in the crossover of cultures, but just physical character design as well.
(also katara & mako parallels actually drive me crazy too lhfdhgksfjd)
(gonna be real dude by the time we finish feeding off of each other we're going to have oc-ified mako so much that he's not even from the legend of korra anymore)
i really love receiving your asks!! <33 but yeah this was a long one so it took a while to find the time to sit down & deconstruct into halfway cohesive responses. i'd love to chat about mako with u more in greater detail but it's a little bit tough with these longass askbox exchanges </3 i'll just put it out there — if you're comfortable, feel free to reach out to me from your main and we can talk through dms! and if not i'll always be happy to receive you in my inbox; just know that my responses will tend to be delayed because i have a lot going on in my life haha. it's lovely to hear from you again :)

I've already mentioned before about the disgusting anti Korra arguments made by neoduskcomics, this is example just so you can see what I'm talking about:
Tumblr media
Allegedly showing how “awful” Korra was in Book 2 because, among other things, she dared to threaten the judge for giving her father a DEATH SENTENCE. How dare Korra defy the authorities who just SENTENCED HER FATHER TO DEATH! Really? How dare Korra be angry because her father... I repeat... was SENTENCED TO DEATH! I mean, who does that, normal people don't get frustrated and angry and even threaten violence if a member of their family is sentenced to death for a crime they didn't commit? Right? She is so obnoxious!
Also the comic portrayed it as her oppressing non-bender there? Like she's hypocritical for doing the opposite of Book 1? They showed the scene like she threatened the judge with waterbending (that's not what happened at all btw) implying that she was doing that because he was supposedly non-bender (I watch scene multiple times, I still can't find any confirmation that judge was non-bender?). Again, she threatened the judge only because he sentenced her father to death, not because he was supposedly non-bender. But again how otherwise literally demonizing Korra if not making shit up about plot?
Or how she supposedly tried to stop Unalaq by force, when in reality she did it when she tried to break her father out of prison, and only attacked Unalaq to distract him so they could escape because her father wasn't there.
And how she didn't listen to her father not to try anything rash before she attacked the judge on the road. The comic of course completely ignores the fact that Korra only did this after seeing her mother completely emotionally broken. Haters as usual like to ignore this very important context. I'm sorry but I had to get some frustration out of me.
What literally happened, the actual transcript, word for word:
Hotah: “On the charge of treason, you are all found... guilty. The punishment for this crime... is death.”
Cut to a shocked Mako and Asami, who stand up. Cut to Korra and Senna, who look on with utter shock and disbelief. Cut to Tonraq, who closes his eyes and bows. Cut back to the courtroom, where Hotah leaves.
Korra: “You can't do this!” [Hotah glances at Korra.] “You take their lives, and I'll take yours!” [Hotah stops and his eyes widen in shock.]
Unalaq: “Korra, calm down. I'll talk to him.” [To Hotah.] “I know I promised to respect whatever decision you made, but I must ask you to reconsider. Show these men and my brother mercy.”
Hotah: “Very well. I'll change their punishment. Your lives will be spared, but you will live them out in prison.” [Rebels and Tonraq heave a sigh of relief.]
Korra: “Thank you, Uncle.”
Again, there is no mention anywhere that Korra will use waterbending against the judge.
What actually happened in the second scene:
Cut to the prison. A guard is patrolling the interior, where an earthbending move causes him to fall into a trench. Sparks fly out of the trench as the guard is electrocuted. Cut to the trench, where the unconscious guard is lying, while Asami, Mako, and Korra climb up the trench.
Korra: “My dad's in there.” [She opens the cell door, only to find it deserted.] Where is he?
Unalaq: “I'm sorry, Korra. You'll never see your father again.”
Korra: “Where's my father?”
Unalaq: “On a ship headed to the Northern Tribe. He'll serve out his sentence there.”
Korra: “Bring him back. Or I'm taking you out and the rest of your army.”
Unalaq: “Remember who you are. As the Avatar, you cannot threaten war. You must remain neutral, or our tribes will never find unity.”
Korra: “You don't want unity. You want power. You've always been jealous of my father, haven't you? You got him banished so you could become chief, and I bet it just killed you to learn he was the Avatar's father. No wonder you kept trying to take me away from him.”
Unalaq: “All I've ever wanted is to help you realize your destiny.”
Korra: “Well, I don't want your help anymore.”
Unalaq: “If you start a war, the dark spirits will annihilate the South. And even I will be powerless to stop them.”
Korra: “I'm done being manipulated by you. You're going to bring my father back, then you and your troops will return to the North.” [Turns away.]
Unalaq: “And why would I do that?”
Korra: “Because you still need me to open the Northern portal.”
Unalaq: “No, I don't. You've served your purpose.”
An enraged Korra throws three fire blasts at her uncle, which Unalaq neutralizes with waterbending. Unalaq throws an arc and a blast at Korra. Korra manages to stop the frozen arc, but is pushed off by the frozen blast. Mako assists Korra with a fire kick. Unalaq manages to dodge the kick and pushes Mako off with a water blast to the face. Unalaq throws another water blast at his niece, but she manages to catch the blast and pushes his against the wall with an air blast.
Mako: “If we get to Varrick's boat, we can still save your father.”
Korra: “Let's go.”
Team Avatar exits the prison, while Unalaq looks on.
Context of the third scene, Korra decided to attack the judge only after seeing her mother emotionally broken:
Cut to an exterior of the prison, cut to Tonraq's cell which Korra and Senna enter.
Senna: “Honey, are you all right?”
Tonraq: “I'm fine.”
Korra: [Determined.] “Good, let's bust you out of here right now.”
Tonraq: “Korra, no. Saving me would start a war. If fighting were to break out, the North would crush the South. I'll be all right. Just promise me you won't do anything rash.”
Korra: “Fine. I promise.”
Cut to the land where Korra and her parents' house is located. Cut to the interior, where Senna is standing before the sink, crying. Korra is watching her from a distance, before approaching her mother.
Korra: [Consoling.] “It's okay, Mom.”
Senna: “I-I hate feeling so helpless.” [Wipes off tears.]
Korra: [Cut to a close-up of Korra's saddened face.] “I know.” [The camera zooms in on her face as she gives an angry and determined look.]
Cut to a cliff where a Satomobile is being driven. Cut to the interior, where Hotah is driving the car. He glances in his review mirror. A close-up of the mirror reveals Korra riding Naga behind his car, gaining on him fast. His eyes widen in surprise. A quick close-up of Hotah's foot shows him flooring the gas pedal. Korra and Naga, however, manage to catch up and knock the Satomobile, causing it to lose control and slamming to the side of the cliff. Naga knocks off the door, while Hotah looks in fear. Korra pulls him up and slams him against the side of the Satomobile.
Why do some people feel the need to tell blatant lies that can be easily proven wrong just to demonize characters they hate? Although sometimes they claim that they actually like the characters, but based on the constant negative criticism against them, I doubt it.

Yang's Least Favorite Day
Yang: *lets out a crestfallen sigh* It's that day again... *she reaches out to grab a framed picture of a younger her, Summer Rose, and a baby Ruby*
Ruby: Yang, do you wanna come to Mom's grave with me?
Yang: *shakes her head* Nah, not on Mother's Day. It's...shit, it's too painful. *she blinks as a 'CAW' can be heard* The hell?
*the two sisters turn to their window, seeing a peculiar raven with a red ribbon tied to its head*
Yang: Raven?! Will you fuck off!? I'm mourning the woman who was actually there for me!

The things you do for love
Ruby: Dear Gods...
Weiss: I'm seeing things, right?
Blake: *covering her nose* What a horrible stench!
Yang: *stares wide-eyed* H-Holy fuck!
Nora: Um...what the heck is this supposed to be!? *points to the 'food' before them*
Tumblr media
Noel: Ramen noodles! I've made them myself!
Yang: Noellers, the water in ramen isn't supposed to be that color. *she yelps as a suddenly bubbles up* It certainly doesn't move like that either.
Ruby: *slowly pushes her bowl away from her* Yeah, it's nice you cooked for us, Noel...but I'm not eating this.
Weiss: These are practically health hazards!
Blake: I'm honestly surprised someone hasn't arrested you yet for this kind of cooking.
Jaune: *walks in* Guys, why does it smell like a fish died in here? *turns to Noel and her 'cooking'* Um, Noel, what's this?
Noel: Ramen that I've worked very hard on, I've also decided to add tuna to the mix.
Blake: *hisses* Such heresy!
Jaune: It looks...different from other Ramen I've seen...
*Team RWBY & Nora shakes their heads to Jaune*
Jaune: *gulps and grabs a bowl of the 'ramen'* Well, I've had Ren's algae shake once, this can't be too bad.
Nora: *covers her eyes* I can't watch!
*one, inevitable food poisoning later*
Jaune: *slowly opens his eyes in a hospital bed* Ugh, my stomach...Oh, Gods!
Noel: Jaune! Thank goodness, you're okay! *pulls him into a hug*
Jaune: Noel, hon, next time...let someone else cook or order take out.

Act 7 - Knocking At The Inn Door
Three knocks and Link stood up, going over to the door.
Guybrush stayed on the bed while Graham looked over his shoulder, waiting to see how the scene would play out. The three of them knew that if it was an attack from one of the goons, if it was an intended strike, the door would have been swung open by now, arrows and who knows what else flinging around the room. But instead, the door remained still, slight tapping on the ground was heard.
“Think it’s the neighbors?” Guybrush whispered.
“Maybe? We weren’t that loud, though.” Graham muttered back.
Link just looked over at the two, finger over his mouth and both fell silent once again. A hand on the knob, he slowly twisted it open and his eyes widened.
“Mako?”
“Link! Perfect, you’re here!” Mako announced, waltzing into the small inn, disregarding entirely how Guybrush suddenly sat very stiff on the bed with his jaw clenching tightly and Graham placing a hand on the pirate’s shoulder. He paced slightly in the room, arms crossed and huffing a bit.
“Um… everything okay?” Graham asked, give Guybrush’s shoulder a small squeeze. “You seem tense.”
“No, I’m not alright. More sailors were seen being taken away.” Mako updated, “I saw them with my own eyes…” he trailed off, halted, and looked over at the archer before locking eyes on Guybrush, a scowl appearing on his face as he took a few large strides over with his hands balled into a fist.
Guybrush’s brows furrowed as a low growl could be heard, bracing himself for whatever the zora was ready to throw his way as Mako towered over him, glaring bitterly at him. Before either of them could do or say anything, Graham quickly stood up and moved himself between the two, hand extended to make sure they couldn’t reach on another. He looked at Link, silently hoping the Hylian would come in and intervene, hopefully pull the frustrated zora away from the livid pirate, like trying to separate two angry cats… he wanted to laugh at the comparison but refrained.
“You think I did it?” Guybrush spoke in a low and bitter tone.
“For once, no. I don’t.” Mako admitted. “Because what I saw wasn’t someone that looked like you, shockingly.”
“So does that mean you’re willing to apologize?”
“Never.” Mako huffed. “I’m just willing to admit you’re not guilty in this particular instance.”
Guybrush just rolled his eyes and crossed his arms. It was only in part thanks to Link who cleared his throat to grab Mako’s attention back towards himself and away from Guybrush.
“Anyways.” He spoke. “If you’re not here accusing Guybrush, what are you doing here, Mako?”
It was almost comical how Mako’s demeanor shifted when talking between the two. Comical in the sense that Graham’s head was nearly spinning at the complete one eighty. Mako walked over, clearly preferring to be near the Hylian than the others. “When you first arrived here, you spoke with someone that was a sailor, correct?”
“Yeah, but… how did you know?” Graham tilted his head.
“How else? He stalked.”
Mako sharply turned his bitter glare at Guybrush who couldn’t help but look just a little smug as the small hint of a blush could be seen.
“Did you or did you not?” Mako asked once more, looking at Link instead and choosing to ignore the two in this one moment.
“As Graham said, we did. Why?” Link placed his hands on his hips, head slightly tilted.
“I think it might have been the very same sailor that was taken.” The zora explained. “Tall individual, beard, hair pulled back in a bun, bit of a drunkard?”
The three remained quiet, thinking over the description when all their eyes widened, realizing who Mako was describing. The captain. The captain back at the bar that asked if they saw his sailors.
“He got taken? You’re sure?” Graham asked. Mako simply nodded. “W… what happened?”
“After you left, I decided to keep an eye out for any misconduct or more kidnappings. I stood close to the pathway between the valley and the town, just to be sure as well as to have a better view for anything out of the ordinary.” Mako explained. “That sailor, he was looking around for his crew since he was calling out different names when I suddenly saw a hooded figure walk up to him, pointing him towards the cave where…?” He looked at the archer, tilting his head.
“Hm? Oh. Graham.” He pointed at himself, answering the silent question for his name.
“Right, where Graham fainted.”
“That’s… weird.” Link mumbled.
“How so?” Mako asked.
“That’s what happened to us after we left that bar as well.” Graham explained. “We got approached by a figure, asking us if we were looking for anyone and then they pointed rather um… ominously towards the cave, which in hindsight makes sense considering everything.”
“So what happened afterwards?” Link asked.
“That sailor went in that direction with that figure. The two went inside and I haven’t seen anyone leave since. Now, I was planning on going in there myself and see what was going on. But knowing you’re here, Link, I thought… maybe, it would be wiser to ask for your help. Both you and your friend.” The zora said, side-eyeing for a moment Guybrush. “And him, I suppose.”
The words were in his mouth but it only took Graham’s hand on his shoulder to keep him seated, to swallow back the sharp verbal lashings.
Link crossed his arms, looking at the two of them and walking over. “So… what do you guys think about the whole thing?”
“I think we should go and investigate, but that being said… it’s not just about me.” Graham said, looking over at Guybrush. “What do you think?”
“I agree. And I want to help because I can see you two are up and raring to go.” He sighed. “Just… not sure if my input is required by everyone, y’know?”
“It is.” Link said, quietly. “It absolutely is.”
Guybrush contemplated for a moment, looking between the two before lifting his hands in defeat. “Alright, then I guess I’m in. But only because you two asked so nicely.”
The two smiled for a brief moment until Link shifted into a frown, shaking his head. “We just got one problem then. We can’t exactly charge into the cave as is, we saw what happened first hand if we did.”
“This is going to hang over my head forever, isn’t it?”
“Much like Link to the pit.”
Link glared bitterly at Guybrush who simply grinned.
“Still.” Graham cut in. “How’d you suppose the kidnappers get through? Mako, you have any ideas how they are able to do so?”
Mako shook his head. “I couldn’t get a good look at them to see if they used any relics or devices to get in… and I doubt they’re holding their breaths long enough to get through.”
“They need to cover their mouths and noses somehow.” Link grumbled, more at trying to figure out the solution then at Mako.
Guybrush looked at the three of them as they all tried figuring the riddle, resting a finger on his chin and gently brushing the goatee in thought. There was something in common he saw a few folks wearing since first arriving here… he was sure of it. He closed his eyes, trying to remember the attire, trying to remember anything specific when suddenly his eyes shot open and there was a glimmer of an idea. He gave a massive grin. Standing up, Guybrush pushed past everyone and went through the door.
“Guybrush? What’s wrong?” Graham asked.
He looked over his shoulder, that grin still plastered on his face. “I have an idea, follow me.” Guybrush swung the door open and started walking, not waiting for any of them to follow.
Mako, however, crossed his arms. “I don’t like this idea already.”
Link patted the zora’s shoulder. “Mako, just trust him.”
“Why?”
The Hylian smiled. “Because he has that idea look on his face. And when he does, it always leads to the correct answer.”

Fanfic Recs: Avatar
Okay, real talk. Who doesn’t love the Avatar series? Let us have a long conversation, shall we? Kidding aside, here’s my contribution to the fandom! Go over the list of fanfic recs I prepared because they’re absolutely amazing.
Tumblr media
Another Brother by AvocadoLove
Author’s summary: It was a mission of revenge. There weren't supposed to be any survivors, but Chief Hakoda couldn't bring himself to kill the Fire Nation boy. Against his better judgment, he brought him home. A Zuko joins the Water Tribe story (ongoing)
Thoughts: Creatively done. If you’re interested about a realistic albeit unique depiction of a water tribe Zuko, here’s your treat. Not to mention, the heartwarming relationships they share.
Ripples in the Water by Ness Frost (Sequels: Set in Stone, From the Ashes)
Author’s summary: Ozai won the final battle, and Aang did not survive. Having lost someone they both care about deeply and separated from the rest of their friends, Zuko and Katara are forced to flee for their lives, and have no one to rely on but each other to survive... and to find and train the next Avatar. Not a shipping fic. Rating is for violence; full warnings inside.
Thoughts: Avatar never lacked in portrayals of war victims. This fic, however, further explores through an AU where everything went south for our heroes. Deliciously dark and haunting.
Reluctant Hero by P.A.W.07
Author’s summary: "It was an accident." That was what Zuko had said to his crew when he used an element he hadn't been meant to. He wasn't the Avatar. The Avatar was supposed to be in the Earth Kingdom, hidden by its walls. Unless the old Avatar had died long ago ... and had already been replaced fifteen years ago. AU.
Thoughts: What’s worse than Zuko being exiled to find the avatar? The answer: Zuko finding out he’s the avatar.
My Name as It's Called Again by Like A Dove
Author’s summary: Mako will always be with the Avatar.
Thoughts: The plot twist in the end is gut-punchingly good.
Mending Wounds » by FictionIsSocialInquiry
Author’s summary: 'The Fire Prince is older. You can see it in the calmness of his expression, the relaxed carriage of his shoulders. He is smiling at her. She's never seen the Fire Lord's son smile.' While lost in the Foggy Swamp, searching for her brother and her Avatar, Katara is haunted by visions of the Fire Nation's disgraced prince. Visions of peace after war, visions of honour and secrets…
Thoughts: Zutara fic at its finest. Character portrayal was on spot.
Distorted Reality by Baithin (Comic adaptation: @avatardistortedreality)
Author’s summary: Three years after losing the war, a bitter and cynical Aang is told by the Avatar spirits that he has to relive his adventures - this time, with Zuko and Azula at his side in a war against the Water Tribes.
Thoughts: One of the best AUs I’ve encountered. The plot itself is literally an AU in their own sense. Interesting characterizations. Also check out the brilliant and beautifully crafted comics I linked.
I love Avatar so much it’s literally that one show I keep coming back to even through the years. If you have other fic recs, feel free to reply here! Thank you to these authors for sharing them to us. Take care everyone.

I really like what you said the other day in response to someone who mistakenly thought Asami was white. I do have some comments on another part of her identity you mentioned in that response. Hear me out, but I don't think that it is fair to say Asami is not a lesbian. She could be. She could also be bi or pan.
Lots of lesbians date men before coming out. This is due to compulsory heterosexuality or comphet which basically means societal pressures makes women feel compelled to be attracted to men. Yes, the society in Avatar is different. However, in Turf Wars it is explained that homophobia does exist in this world, so it would make sense that people would be closetted or take longer to figure things out. In the comic, Asami is also nervous to tell Korra's parents about their relationship because of this homophobia. Kya even explains that the fire nation is the most homophobic of the nations. The fire nation helped form Republic City and Asami is ethnically fire nation. Therefore, this influence would definitely be present in her life which could make her feel compelled to date men.
I'm not saying that Korra or Asami are definitely lesbians, but they could be. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's never explicitly stated if they are lesbians or bisexuals in Avatar or any real world official media. Therefore, they could be either of them. If a lesbian sees some of themselves in the characters and projects their identity a little bit, there is nothing wrong with that. If a bisexual sees some of themselves in the characters and projects their identity a little bit, there is nothing wrong with that. I don't think it's erasure to say that they could be either, but it is erasure to say they can't be one of them.
I'm a transgender lesbian. I strongly identity with most of Korra's traits. We have very similar, flaws and strengths. She feels like the only person I have ever identified with in media. One of the many ways I relate to Korra is her roamances. One time I dated one of my best friends, a straight man. At first I was head over heels and extremely excited. I saw a future with us. After several months I kept saying stuff like, "This part of our relationship would be better if I was with a woman," and stuff like that. Just like Korra in season 2, I started getting angry at him very easily, sometimes over nothing. We love board games, but couldn't finish one without someone getting pissy. I eventually realized that I couldn't do this anymore and I told him I made a mistake and that I'm not attracted to men. We are still very good friends and if I could be attracted to men, he would be the perfect boyfriend for me. Sometimes I think Korra is a lesbian like me. Sometimes, I think she's bi and just Makko wasn't a good fit. Either way is a perfectly fine way to think about it. No matter what, she is a badass sapphic and I'm glad we can all be inspired by her in some way.
Hey first off, I want to thank you for sending this and being really awesome about the way you've approached this. You don't always see it on tumblr, so it's much appreciated!
There's a lot you've said, so instead of responding completely line for line, I'm just going to write my complete opinion about this and hopefully it makes sense.
Bryke had made two official statements after the airing of the show, none that overtly say that they are bisexual, but it is heavily implied, especially in Bryan's statement which is the first post linked (x)(x). As quoted by Bryan, "Despite what you might have heard, bisexual people are real!"
Comphet is a legitimate issue in the world today, but I personally never got that feeling from Korra or Asami (through the series or comics). I believed that their relationships with Mako were genuine and it just didn't work out (all of them being the issue, not just Mako, lol). But again, that is my own personal viewpoint.
Erasure is the thing that I want to tackle most and hopefully I can do that cohesively and in an understandable way. The idea of labeling and identities on a personal standpoint is fluid and is on a spectrum. As a person, you don't need to label yourself or you can label yourself if you'd like, you can be as you are and that's okay. Personally, I identify as Queer because Bisexual does fit me, but just not completely in the way I'd like it to. Pan doesn't fit quite right, neither does Lesbian. So, thus I label myself as Queer leaning towards Bisexual tendencies.
But this idea and concept of labeling is very different when it comes to media and it's not focused on a real life person and their experiences. Labeling in media is important and that is because of positive representation in society. Often times, bisexual characters are portrayed in negative ways, so when there is positive portrayal and representation, this is important to the nth degree. Korra and Asami also weren't just side characters, they were main characters. So to have a clearly positive portrayal of bisexual characters on a mainstream show, that was huge. On top of this, this was a children's show, so to be a little kid or even someone older, finally seeing someone that is like you would be a significant moment in your life. This is honestly another reason why I love Korrasami so much, because of my own struggles with identity.
This all can be countered with the idea that they're lesbians and wouldn't that be good representation too? Yes, it would be, but it also wouldn't be as significant when taking into account all of TV/Film media.
If we breakdown and take in all of the positive representation of Lesbians vs Bisexuals, it would be more significant for them to be bisexual in a time where there was little to no good bisexual representation. In 2013 '64.7 percent of inclusive films included gay male characters. 23.5 percent included lesbian characters, and 17.7 percent contained bisexual characters.' Presently, on cable TV 34% of regular and recurring LGBTQ characters were lesbian and 18% of regular and recurring LGBTQ characters were bisexual. On streaming, lesbian representation makes up 28% and bisexual representation makes up 19%. These numbers don't even break down if it's positive representation either! So again, although real life sexuality is fluid or can be on a spectrum, media labeling is more rigid and representative of a specific area. Making it extremely significant and influential when there is a character labeled a specific way, bisexual in this case.
To this day, people still deny that bisexual people exist. Often times the debate is whether a person is gay or straight, but nothing more. So erasure is a big deal and claiming that Korra or Asami are lesbians can be detrimental in ways that people may not have thought of at first. People can obviously identify with a character and feel attachment to them, but there is no reason to not feel that attachment if their sexual orientation may differ from your own.

Random prompts - KyaLin: 14.  “Okay, so maybe I didn’t see that coming.”
Here you go Nonnie, I hope you enjoy! 💕
“Where is she?” Kya wasn’t wasting time.
The words were out of her mouth as soon as she ducked around the corner of the building. She crouched in front of the younger detective, waiting patiently for his his answer. She could feel the adrenaline pumping through her veins.
Mako looked up in surprise, trying to find a frequency but getting only static from the radio on his hip. He had been pinned down at this corner for the better part of fifteen minutes.
How in the hell had Kya managed to get through?
As if wanting to answer his question, the Master Healer leant around the wall drawing water from the pouch at her hip. With a flick of her hands, that was probably more complicated than he was able to see, she sent a torrent of water out into the skirmish. He grinned as he heard screams and what sounded like bodies thudding against the stone of the street.
Looking back at him, she winked conspiratorially.
“Mako, honey,” she tried again, her voice softer, “where is she?”
He didn’t have to question who she was talking about. He could see the worry behind the blue eyes, all though anyone else only would have seen the determination. Kya needed to get to the Chief, Mako had a bad feeling about all this.
This whole debacle started twenty minutes before the end of shift. A call came over the emergency radio at the precinct that there was an attack on the new clinic just west of the new spirit portal. The Triads were trying to make a statement to the Chief of Police as well as the rest of the city.
They were able to establish a blockade before the fighting reached the inside of the clinic. The doors, front and back were barricaded. The patients and healers inside were safe, some were out here on the front lines working to heal the fallen officers, Kya included.
Mako swallowed, his throat dry and sticky, “The last I saw her, she was swinging on her cables in that direction.”
Kya followed his finger as it pointed across the street, landing on the roof tops of the alley way directly across from them. He watched her run through some things in her mind, maybe calculating the risks of crossing through the battle raging in the street.
As they peeked around the corner, it was clear there were no signs of either side stopping. There was fire flying through the air only to be intercepted by water from an unknown source, pieces of the street and the buildings rippled as they were manipulated by earthbenders from both sides.
Metal from nearby stalls and storefronts groaned as it was manipulated by officers, quickly shaping into flat sheets, encasing the wounded or protecting those volleying off counter attacks.
If she hadn’t been looking for it, she would have missed the shink of cables being released from their casing and subsequently Lin swinging across the street. She came to rest on the side of the clinic, one hand wrapped around the cables imbedded in the wall and the other gripping the hand hold she created on the brick.
Kya had a momentary flashback of when they were younger and Lin used to grip the walls of the Air Temple Island dormitories in the same manner…it never failed to freak her mother out. She chuckled quietly to herself, feeling the exact moment that Mako spied the Chief as well. The metalbender seemed to be looking for something, she was scanning the foray, clearly thinking she was up high enough to not be noticed.
But someone had noticed her…someone was silently curling a water tendril along the wall, not quite touching the stone. She wouldn’t be able to feel it.
Before Kya could call out, she watched as the tendril wrapped around Lin’s ankle, the look of shock on her face would have been comical in any other circumstance. The Chief was ripped from the side of the wall, disappearing from view behind a large pile of wreckage, her cables hanging lifeless, still attached to the wall.
The next thing Mako knew Kya was running, and then he was too, trying desperately to keep up with her impressive pace. He guessed it was the adrenaline and worry that made her so reckless, but at least he was there. The waterbender was able to doge most of the attacks flung her way as she rushed towards where the Chief was last seen, but Mako did fling the occasional blast of fire, he had to make sure she stayed safe at least.
Kya rounded the side of the wreckage where they had seen Lin disappear, tripping and landing in the water spread across the ground. She managed to keep her footing and pushed off the ground with the palm of her hands. She stopped short and if he hadn’t been paying attention, Mako would have slammed into the back of her.
The Chief was on the ground, lying extremely still..too still, the only thing that kept Kya from dropping to her knees was that she could see her chest rising and falling. Slowly, but it was a win nonetheless. Next to her, with a metal spike sticking out of their chest, was the waterbender Kya assumed had ambushed Lin. They weren’t moving, not even their chest.
Mako gripped her shoulder and brought her back to herself, the surroundings coming back into focus. They sprinted the rest of the way, Kya dropping to her knees next to Lin, barely registering the sting of her battered skin or the sound of Mako dragging the body away from them.
She pulled water from the flask at her hip and began to assess the younger woman’s injuries. A dislocated shoulder, a bruise on her right cheek discoloring the skin around her scars, a possible concussion…not sure how bad that was and two cracked ribs. She would be ok.
“Thank the spirits,” Kya mumbled, hanging her head in relief,
Mako was now crouched beside her, the blue glow of the healing water casting shows on all their faces. He would scan the surrounding area and then return his gaze to Kya and the Chief every so often.
Kya released the catches of Lin’s uniform, knowing just how unamused her wife was going to be when she regained consciousness and found herself in just her uniform pants and under tank. Kya stifled the absurd laugh that bubbled up, practically choking on it.
As the water was concentrated on her left side, the ribs, Kya could feel the awareness returning to her partner, her heartbeat picking up slightly. That was all the warning she got before Lin sat up, her forehead barely missing Kya’s.
“Whoa,” Kya intoned softly, Mako behind Lin instantly, offering her support, “take it easy Chief.”
Lin winced and moved to grab her head, her shoulder and ribs protesting violently.
“What the hell happened,” she groaned.
Kya was now focused on Lin’s head, trying to relive the pressure that was causing her partner to be slightly nauseous. The healer glared at the metalbender, Mako cowered in sympathy.
“Lin, what was Aunt Suki’s main rule in combat?”
The Chief looked at Kya in confusion, whether from the change in topic or from the head injury, Mako wasn’t sure.
The glare deepened, “What was it Lin?”
The anger in Kya’s voice immediately snapped the metalbender out of her daze. They connected eyes, snapping blue to sheepish green, and Lin was reminded of all the times she had seen those eyes. Most notably when they were caught sneaking back onto the island as children and when she did something particularly stupid. Kya may have taken after Uncle Aang in the Air Nomad sense, but her temper was all Aunt Katara.
“Keep track of your surroundings,” Lin sighed as the pressure in her head finally lifted.
“Yes Lin,” Kya continued, voice hard as she moved to the shoulder, “and what didn’t you do?”
Lin followed the movements and relented, “Keep track of my surroundings.”
Mako stifled a chuckled at the clearly admonished Chief…they needed to bring in Master Kya more often he thought.
Kya huffed, “Exactly, now this is going to hurt.”
As soon as she gave the warning Lin grit her teeth, sucking in a breath as Kya quickly reset the joint. The pop making Lin sick to her stomach, the searing pain keeping her from losing it completely. The ache was soon replaced by the cool feel of the healing water, a relief that Lin didn’t know she needed.
“I had the situation under control,” she bit out.
Kya went still, eyebrow raised in a challenge, and Lin had the good sense to back down slightly.
“Before or after that waterbender plucked you off the side of the building like a ripe moon peach?”
The Chief’s cheeks colored slightly, as she looked down at her lap. She started when she realized she was no longer wearing her uniform. The glare directed towards Kya was one for the books, she was not pleased.
Kya huffed indignantly, she could really give a shit right now.
Lin leant forward, taking some of her weight off Mako as the detective went to stand. She nodded towards the boy, a quiet thanks that he returned as he settled into a cautious stance.
“Okay, so maybe I didn’t see that coming,” Lin relented.
Kya didn’t respond, just kept to her task, working to heal her wife. She was furious…and scared, Lin could sense the residual adrenaline in Kya’s system.
She inclined her head, trying to catch her wife’s eyes as she worked on the shoulder joint. When Kya finally gave in and looked up, Lin could see the sheen of tears just along the water line of her lashes. She cursed herself.
Lin leant forward and cupped the back of Kya’s head, their foreheads connecting, the air between them charged with emotion. She could feel Kya shaking, everything in the last hour finally catching up with her.
“I’m ok,” she reassured the healer, her voice gentle, “I’m sorry and I’m ok.”
Their lips met tentatively, soft at first but slowly growing desperate. The need to feel, to know that each other was alright, winning out over decorum. Mako turned slightly, giving them as much privacy as their situation could allow.

Wuko in the comics
Welcome to my first post discussing Wuko in the LoK comic books!
This first post will be discussing Turf Wars- which unfortunately does not feature Wu. But there are lots of excellent Mako moments, and there are some major plot points that carry over into the next comic trilogy.
Tumblr media
Turf Wars is the first LoK comic trilogy released after the finale. Though it was released two and half years after the finale aired, it picks up right where we left off. While the creators confirmed after the finale aired that Korrasami was canon, the last moments of the animated series were a little ambiguous (on purpose, since this was a time when queer representation was just not considered "acceptable" in children's media-it was truly the only way they could get away with it). The comics definitively remove all ambiguity. Turf Wars features multiple frames of Korra and Asami kissing, holding hands, and coming out to their friends and family.
The overarching plot of Turf Wars is a conflict over the land upon which the new spirit portal sets. There is also conflict between rival Triad gangs, the Triple Threats and the Creeping Crystals, over turf in Republic City following the chaos of Kuvira's invasion. These two sets of turf wars overlap when a business tycoon hires the Triple Threats to secure the spirit portal for him by driving others off. The new Leader of the Triple Threats, Tokuga, is attacked by a spirit defending the portal, causing him to gain a dragon-like appearance and a new agenda-seizing control of all Republic City. In the midst of all this there is a refugee crisis, a presidential election, and Korra and Asami trying to navigate their new relationship once they return to the real world with all their responsibilities.
Notable plot points and character developments:
Korra and Asami canon is confirmed (repeatedly)-They come out to family and their friends
Business owner Wonyong Keum, who owns the land upon which the new portal sits, demands everyone vacate so he can turn it into a tourist attraction for profit-prompting Korra to enter the Avatar state to temporarily drive him away.
An unhappy spirit requests Korra closes the portal to prevent exploitation of the spirit world.
Bolin joins Mako as his rookie detective partner.
Zhu Li is running efforts to care for refugees who lost their homes during Kuvira’s attack and teams up with Asami to begin rebuilding homes for everyone displaced.
Tokuga is introduced as the leader of the Triple Threats, fighting for control of the streets with Jargala, the leader of the Creeping Crystals.
Kya reveals she is queer and gives us a history lesson on the context of LGBTQ+ history in the world.
Tokuga is attacked by the afore-mentioned spirit and his right arm and half his face become dragon-esque.
Raiko is a colossal idiot. He is way too focused on getting reelected and making his decisions based on what his campaign advisor suggests, rather than just, you know, governing his city. He calls the military to occupy the portal, prompting the Airbenders to peacefully protest.
Zhu Li runs against Raiko for the presidency. She rallies more protesters to protect the spirit portal while her husband films her for his newest project- a “docu-mover” which he presumably uses to influence the election.
Asami and Keum are kidnapped by Tokuga and forced to make a poison gas device bring the city under Tokuga’s control.
The Krew manages to save the day of course, thanks to Asami’s wit, Korra’s unstoppable stubbornness, and back-up from Bolin and Mako. Except Mako, bless him, says he’ll “take care of Tokuga”, and then promptly loses him.
Tokuga mysteriously disappears into the spirit world.
Zhu Li wins the presidency.
Korra and Asami share a lovely, romantic moment where they exchange their first “I love you”s at the conclusion of the comic.
Mako scenes
There is no Wu in the Turf Wars comics (Unless you count one line of dialogue where it is mentioned that the Earth Kingdom is sending supplies to help the refugee situation) - however, there is plenty of Mako! Mako’s primary role in this series is as a detective trying to find and stop the Triads from waging their turf war in the city.
Our first scenes with Mako shows him back to being a detective- and his brother is his partner. He doesn’t seem super thrilled to be working with Bolin, but I think it’s just because he knows how his brother is- not that he doesn’t want to spend time with him. They are trying to track down the new leader of the triple threats and control gang activity. Mako’s arm is still in a sling, he’s got his usual brooding grumpy facial expression, and his hair is spiky again! He and Bolin arrest two-toed Ping and try to interrogate him. Two-toed Ping is weirdly proud of Mako and Bolin for rising up from being “nobodies” to a couple of “bigtime cops”.
They catch up with Korra and Asami, and the four of them are alerted by Jinora that the Triple threats are attacking the Airbenders that were meditating at the portal. Asami gets hurt in the battle and she and Korra share a kiss in front of everyone:
Tumblr media
Look at Opal’s sweet face. She looks like she’s barely containing her excitement and is maybe squealing a bit, and she’s looking directly at Bolin which I think is a sweet moment to show their relationship. Bolin calls dibs on the first double date.
Tumblr media
Mako probably needs time to process the information....
Mako and Bolin do some detective work to try and find Tokuga. There is an interesting scene where they are questioning Scoochy (We saw him in the first season, he’s the kid that told Korra and Mako the Bolin went to do some work for the triple threats before getting captured by equalists) Bolin tells Mako they should do “good cop, bad cop”, with Bolin being the good cop. Mako gets annoyed, and Bolin asks if he’s grumpy because his exes are dating. Mako insists he’s cool with it- though he’s got a distressed look on his face. They catch up to Scoochy and Bolin actually loses his temper and is rather menacing. Mako pulls Bolin back and genuinely connects with Scoochy- relating to his past, pushing him to do the right thing and help others. I really liked this moment because it shows how much character growth he’s had when you compare the way he treated Kai in season 3. (They are ultimately unsuccessful and Scoochy’s tip leads them to a room rigged with explosives- but I don’t think Scoochy knew that, I think he was fed false info).
There’s another touching scene, after Asami is kidnapped, where Mako notices how upset Korra seems as everyone is trying to form a plan to stop Tokuga. He steps aside to check in and see how she’s feeling. He comforts her’ empathizes with her, and reassures her that they are going to find Asami. At this point he seems to have fully processed that they are together and seems to fully accept it and is very supportive. Not easy considering the awkward position he’s in as both their exes. In this scene, Mako also informs Korra that he can’t firebend with his injured arm.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mako and Bolin helps Korra to find Asami by requesting help from Jargala- in spite of the fact that Chief Beifong told them not to… They show up for Korra and Asami even if it means risking their jobs. They team up and fight the bad guys together, just like the old days.
We see many examples of how bad the damage is from Mako’s injury in the Colossus. He can’t bend with his left arm, it’s in a sling almost the whole comic, and he really doesn’t seem to be at the top of his game. He told Bolin he would take care of catching Tokuga, but apparently couldn’t and lost him. Mako’s injury is pretty bad and it’s probably really frustrating.
At the end, Bolin decides to quit the force (surprise. The guy loves to hop from calling to calling!). He makes a big dramatic speech to Mako, talking about how it’s time they go their separate ways. Mako is like “Um I’m going to see you at home in like two hours”, so it sounds like they are living together.
What all this might mean for Wuko
So now I’m going to try to tie things back into how all this affects the potential of Wuko- whether that’s for headcanons or fics or whatever- and just try to give you an idea of what this comic means for Wuko shippers.
Wu is governing in the Earth Kingdom right now. It is mentioned by Zhu Li that the Earth Kingdom sent supplies, so one can assume Wu has taken his place on the throne and the Earth Kingdom is in a stable enough position to be sending supplies to aid another nation. Nothing is mentioned about efforts to transform the Earth Kingdom into a democratic nation (we’ll get to that in the Ruins of the Empire comics).
Mako’s primary relationships that are explored are with his brother and with Korra. His relationship with Bolin is just as it always is. He loves his brother even if he is a little exhausted by his upbeat, enthusiastic attitude. We build up on his final interaction with Korra from the animated series and continue to firmly establish them as friends and amicable exes. Interestingly, we don’t get any meaningful Mako and Asami interactions. When he is comforting Korra, he relates to her by remembering how worried he was when Korra was kidnapped by Amon. He doesn't try to say “Yeah I’m really worried about Asami too”, which, to me is bizarre because he and Asami are friends too, right? I don’t know if we should read too much into it though- most likely it was just a writing choice that we aren’t meant to psycho-analyze- but it could also mean he is being careful with his words so that Korra doesn’t wonder if he still has feelings for Asami. The love triangle is completely resolved and Mako is out of the picture romantically with either of them and has no lingering romantic feelings. In other words, he is 100% ready available for a relationship with someone else.
The scene where Kya gives us a history lesson establishes how LGBTQ+ people are viewed in the world of LoK. In short, Korra and Asami are fully supported by their friends and family, and even their enemies acknowledge their relationship without any homophobic tones. The closest we get to homophobia is Korra's father, who, after expressing his happiness at their relationship, warns Korra to be cautious going forward because not everyone will be as understanding. Kya gives us a quick lesson on how same-gender relationships are viewed across the nations: The water tribe, being a patriarchal culture, expects discretion. The Earth Kingdom is not particularly accepting-Kya says that Avatar Kyoshi was bisexual but couldn't affect "real change" and that the earth kingdom is the slowest to accept change and is also militarily repressive (full disclosure I have not read the Kyoshi comics, maybe there is additional insight in those?). And in the fire nation, Sozin made same-gender relationships illegal when he took power (I hope Zuko undid all that when he became Firelord). The air nation is the only one that seems truly accepting-Kya paints a picture of total acceptance and says that Aang was supportive when she herself came out. Korra is worried that maybe her father was right, but Asami points out that a lot has changed over the years and everyone seems accepting, especially in Republic City.
I think what we can take away from this as far as Wuko goes- is that in Republic City, same-gender relationships are not much of an issue, while in the Earth Kingdom it could be viewed negatively. One could make a case that Wu might have cause to be closeted, while Mako might not. (Feel free to reject this history canon and substitute your own. I’d just as soon say that no one in the avatar-verse cares if you aren’t cis or het).
In conclusion. Mako is just a guy trying very hard to be a good, supportive friend to his exes who are now dating each other. He loves them (platonically) he loves his brother, he’s kind and has matured a lot, but he still always has a grumpy look on his face so it’s time for him to move on and get together with Wu.
Well, that’s Turf Wars. I did cram the plot of three comic books into one post, so I certainly did not hit all the details. If you feel I missed something crucial, feel free to reblog with your own takes. Next I’ll discuss Ruins of the Empire, in which we get lots of Wu and potential Wuko moments, a sizable helping of angst and even some Wu & Korra friendship! RotE is a really fun comic trilogy and I’ll be breaking it down into multiple posts. Thanks for reading everyone!

Could you maybe do a korra x reader where both of them are super obvious about the fact that they like each other, so literally everyone knows except them, then Bolin (haha that just autocorrected to bologna) convinces Korra to finally ask the reader out and it's very fluff? THANK YOOOOOOOUUUUUU.

~
The buzzer for your front door rang again as you fixed your hair in the mirror for the third time, your small apartment filling with its shrill sound.  He was holding the button down this time.  You hated to keep your friend waiting in the cold, but he was the one who opted to wait for you outside rather than coming in.
The same nervous phrase played in your mind again, Korra’s gonna be at the party.
Groaning, you walked over to your callbox and held down the talk button, “I’m getting my boots on!”
When you opened the front door to your apartment, you were greeted with a very cold gust of wind and a grumpy expression from Bolin. He was shivering, cradling the bottle of cactus juice he brought along as a party favor. He watched you walk out in front of him and started after you. Fluffy snowflakes floated around the two of you in the winter air.
“It’s so cold! How long does it take you to get ready for a party?!”
“Oh, don’t act like you don’t take a century to make yourself look good either, Mr. Hero of the South,” you teased as he caught up with you.
Bolin was quick to defend his fictional persona, puffing out his chest dramatically, “Hey, don’t bring Nuktuk into this.  He’s only ever fashionably late for everything.  You’re just late now because you know that Korra’s gonna be there.”
Bolin’s statement made your face flush bright red.  You wound up your open palm and playfully smacked your friend in the arm, which made him laugh.
“Hey! It’s not my fault you make it so obvious, with the way the two of you are always sitting so close together.  You think you’re slick when you stare at her while she’s not paying attention, too. It’s kind of adorable,” Bolin snickered, “But Asami, Mako, and I can see right through you, [Y/n].”
You looked down at your boots as they tamped down on the fallen snow with every step.  You knew Bolin was right. You were infatuated with Korra from the beginning.  You recalled the day that Bolin introduced you to each other.  He’d introduced her as the Avatar, and she laughed and said, “Unlike Bolin here, I’m not one for formalities. Just call me Korra.”
Her smile was so warm. You felt enchanted by her presence, hesitating to shake her hand when she held it out to you. You remember looking at her and asking yourself, how could someone be so gorgeous?
“You would make a cute couple.”
Bolin’s remark snapped you back into the moment, “What? No way, she’s not into me.”
There was a pause between you two.  Bolin gave you a look that said, You’re so full of shit and you know it.
“Besides,” You stuttered, “even if she did...she’s too busy for a relationship.  She has more important things to worry about.”
The two of you rounded the corner and Bolin remarked as you came to a stop at Asami’s apartment building, “[Y/n], my friend, nothing’s more important than looove.”
You rolled your eyes and Bolin pressed the buzzer marked SATO.
“Who is it?” Asami’s voice inquired over the crackling speaker.
“Republic City Police,” Bolin said in a tough-guy voice, “If you don’t let us in, you’re under arrest.”
“Right away, officers,” Asami replied, and you heard Korra’s laughter in the background.  You swore your heart skipped a beat.
The door buzzed and you let yourselves in, climbing the stairs up to Asami’s unit. She opened the door and was met with a bear-hug from Bolin.  In the living room, you saw Korra turn around and beam at you.  Mako waved at the two of you with a pleased, “Hey, guys,” as he sat on the couch.
Before you could take off your coat, Korra walked over and embraced you.  You smiled and hugged her back, blushing at your newfound knowledge that your entire friend group somewhat knew about your feelings for her.
“I’m so happy that you’re here, [Y/n].  Asami made snacks, we’ve got games,” she pulled away from the hug and looked at you inquisitively, “How’ve you been? You look great.”
You got a little flustered at Korra’s compliment paired with the physical touch she was giving you so openly.  She wasn’t wearing her normal attire; she had on dark jeans and a blue cardigan sweater with a white halter top underneath.  When you looked at her eyes, you noticed she had mascara on.
Why do you have to be so pretty? You wanted to say.
“I should be saying that to you, Korra. I like your outfit.”
Not too obvious, [Y/n].
As the two of you finally broke from your hug, Bolin handed Asami the bottle he brought and joined Mako in the living room. Asami offered you a drink, and you accepted.  She poured glasses for everyone and soon all five of you were huddled together around the coffee table in the living room, snacking and chatting amongst each other.
Korra sat down next to you on the floor, while Asami, Mako, and Bolin shared the couch.  Asami set up a couple of games for you all to play, and Bolin insisted that you all have a Pai Sho tournament.  His proposition made you roll your eyes at his predictability, knowing that he had a vendetta against Asami for being so much better than him.
As you watched your friends go back and forth, Korra went to scoot a little closer to you, making your shoulders touch.  You felt the skin on your arm vibrate under the soft fabric of her sweater.  You could smell the perfume she was wearing; subtle, but so pleasant.  You caught yourself stealing glances at her a couple of times and remembered Bolin teasing you about it earlier in the night. You didn’t care if you would hear it from him again, though. You were just happy to be so close to her.
Asami crushed both Bolin and Mako at their rounds of Pai Sho. They had decided midway to make it a drinking game, Asami being closer to sober than anyone else in the room.  Mako sunk into the couch and admitted his defeat, empty glass in hand.  Bolin was comically shouting about how Asami had cheated in some far-off way.  She reveled in her victory.
There was a beat of silence before Mako slowly looked at you and Korra, asking, “You two gonna play at all tonight?”
You and Korra both looked up at the same time, snapped back into the present moment.  The both of you stuttered at the same time something to the effect of, “Oh, no, its okay,” and, “We just want to watch you guys play.”
Bolin couldn’t help but stifle a chuckle, and you shot a glare at him.  He put his hands up innocently and gave you the same look that he did during your conversation earlier.
Korra suddenly stood up, smiling, “I’m gonna go to the bathroom. Why don’t we find a game to play that we’re all good at while I’m gone, okay?”
As she left, she brushed her hand against your shoulder blade, making you shiver. You wondered if it was on purpose.
~
Korra could hear the group talking outside of the bathroom.  As she opened the door to return to the group, she jumped as Bolin was waiting right outside, leaning against the wall.  He stared at her with a smirk across his lips.
“Jeez, you scared me.  What’s that look for?”
“Oh, no reason,” Bolin said sarcastically, cracking his knuckles, “It’s just that you were taking such a long time in the bathroom, I wanted to check on my good ‘ole pal Korra.”  He threw his arm around her and squeezed, “Hey, so you like [Y/n], right? Like, you wanna be their girlfriend?”
Korra gave him a poorly-faked look of shock, blushing, “What are you talking about?”
Bolin didn’t respond. He just stared blankly at her.
“I mean, I really like hanging out with them, and they’re really nice, and,” She stopped herself, stuttering now,  “We’re just really good friends!”
“Yeah, okay, I believe you. Listen, you should ask them out.”
Korra was taken aback, “You really think they’re gonna--”
“Yes, Korra. I do,” Bolin pointed a thumb toward the open guest bedroom door next to him, “Now, I’m gonna call [Y/n] over and you can go confess your undying love for them in there, okay?”
“Bolin, I’m not--”
“[Y/n], Korra needs you for something!”
~
You perked up at the sound of Bolin calling you from down the hallway.  Breaking your conversation with Mako and Asami, you walked over to see Korra standing in the doorway of the bathroom and Bolin wearing the same stupid smirk again.  You looked at Korra and smiled.
“Hey, Korra, what’s up? Everything okay?”
Bolin laughed, “It’s about to be!”
You scoffed at him as he marched triumphantly back to the living room, cackling with pride the entire way.
He left you all alone. With Korra.
“What are we gonna do with him?” You asked, and Korra chuckled.
“I’ve been wondering that for years.”
The two of you shared a laugh, and then her eyes met yours.  And there that feeling was again. With every look you shared with her, you felt like your heart was going to burst out of your chest.
But this time you realized that Korra was a little flustered too.  Her cheeks grew pink and she broke eye contact, but only for a second before looking back at you and taking your hand.
“Um, want to just...sit and talk for a minute?”
Her hand was soft, which you were aware of already. You were obviously used to being a little touchy with each other, but when you got brave, sometimes you’d hold out your hand to her, palm up, and she’d take it in hers.  You didn’t know exactly why you did it in the moment, but whenever you did, it just felt right. It felt so right to be holding her hand in yours.
All you could do was nod. She led you to the bedroom and turned on the lamp on the bedside table.  The two of you sat down, Korra sitting cross-legged and facing you. She let out a long, deep sigh. You watched her as she searched her mind for the right words to say.  She was so cute when she was concentrating.
She finally spoke, “I’m so happy that you came out tonight. There’s something that I really need to tell you.”
“Is everything alright?” You got a little self-conscious, “Was I being too touchy?”
“No, of course not!” Korra shook her head frantically and held both of your hands in hers, “You could never make me uncomfortable like that.  I really love being around you, [Y/n].”
You smiled and adjusted yourself to come face-to-face with her, “I love spending time with you, too, Korra.”
She paused to find her words again.  There was a beat between you two before she broke the silence.
“I really, really like you, [Y/n].  You make me feel so happy in a way that no one else has made me feel before...” She swallowed her fears and looked at you intently, “Do you want to go out with me?”
You felt fireworks go off in your chest.  All of the anxieties you were feeling from earlier felt like they dissipated in that moment.  You didn’t know how long you were waiting for this moment to come.
“Yes,” you said, leaving toward her almost on instinct, “Of course I do.”
Korra gave you the biggest smile you’d ever seen on her. She let go of your hands to wrap her arms around you and pull you close to her. You made eye contact again, but only for a moment before she leaned in and kissed you. You were in shock. You had waited for this moment to come for so long, and now it was finally happening.  You returned the kiss to her and wrapped your arms around her shoulders.  You felt like you could never be close enough to her.
You could really smell her perfume now. You reveled in the feeling of finally being able to kiss her like this, unafraid to conceal your feelings for her any longer.  Her lips were soft against yours, and despite the countless times that you imagined this moment to happen, you never could have conceptualized just how euphoric it actually would be.
Eventually, the sound of your friend group’s laughter echoed into the guest bedroom, and you were broken from your trance.
We’re still at the party, you remembered.
Unaware of how much time had passed, you pulled away, realizing that Korra somehow ended up practically on top of you.  Brought back to the present, the two of you slowly sat back up and gazed at one another.
“We should, uh, probably get back out there,” said Korra, breathless at the intensity of the moment you just shared.
You nodded in agreement and stood up with her.  She took your hand in hers and squeezed as the both of you walked out together.  She looked proud, and you felt so happy, so relieved.
As the two of you returned, Bolin threw his hands up and hollered, “Oh-ho, look which lucky couple decided to join us! How polite of you two!”
Asami laughed.  You blushed, and Korra replied with gusto, “Oh, pardon me! Did we miss watching you lose another round of Pai Sho?”
“Alright, lovebirds,” said Mako, equally as entertained as his little brother, “Now that that’s taken care of, get your sorry asses over here. We have a tournament to finish.”

My Invincible Hero
(Just a experiment to see if these two properties work together for a crossover.)
The new dorms at U.A. Heights were a real change of pace for Mako, he had moved to Japan when he was so young that he barely remembered what it was like back in America. And they had always lived in their house since moving here that living at a dorm was.....ironically, alien to him. Not that it wasn’t bad or anything! Class 1A living together under one roof was, as he expected a blast, case in point the first night they all showed off their own rooms.
Still can’t believe Izuku still has all that All Might Merch......well not like I’m one to talk. he thought, leaning out from his desk chair to look at the bookshelf beside his door containing his massive comic book collection. His room was, in his eyes, very comfortable, he and his mom found a nice table set with comfortable cushions to sit down on that easily slid under his bed. Though he didn’t have a mini kitchen setup like Sato, no wonder he won their little room coemption.
Thank god we didn’t look in Mineta’s room.....uggghhhh. he thought with a sour expression. Looking over his completed homework, he stood up from his desk and looked outside the balcony window to his room. It was turning to dusk now but for Mako it might have well have been afternoon, he could easily towards the west until it was afternoon over in America if he wanted.
Looking over at his door, he saw his costume hanging up on a hook, the black, yellow, and blue costume hung up on a hook with his mask also looped around it, his gloves and boots were kicked off to the side after a long day doing some work for the GDA. After his dad.......left.....someone needed to fill in for him, and bypassing a hero license with Global Defense Agency’s license was easy for someone like the head of the organization. But it was nice to get back to school life for a few days.
Before the hero licensing exams that is, I’m still not sure why I need to take it considering I’ve been doing that sort of work for little over a year now. he thought as he walked out of his room. Just in time to see Kaminari rush by, “Hey man, what’s up?” he asked the electric user as he lifted up off the ground a few inches and floated after him.
“Oh! Hey Mako! You wouldn’t happen to have some popcorn would you?” he asked.
“Uhhh.....no? Why?” he asked in confusion as they stopped in front of the elevator.
The static user gave him a look, “Dude it’s movie night!” he reminded the fellow student. Mako wanted to kick himself, it was Friday night, of course it was movie night!! He was the one who suggested it in the first place! And it was also his turn to pick a movie!!! “Crap! Sorry, right. Yeah, um....no, don’t have any. But I’m gonna fly out, I can pick some up while I’m out.” he offered.
The spikey haired blonde clapped his hands together and bowed his head in thanks, “Your a lifesaver man!” he said, turning back the way he came as the doors to the elevator opened and Izuku walked and smiled to him in greeting.
“Hey Mako, I was about to do some training real quick, want to join me?” he offered.
When Izuku’s quirk finally kicked in, Mako was probably up there with his friend with how excited he was for him. It took a while....and some broken bones, before he could actually train with Mako, but as soon as he could he was more then happy to. “Sorry, I gotta fly home, grab a movie and some popcorn for movie night. I totally forgot it was my turn this week.” he admitted.
The green haired inheritor have him a understanding look, “It’s ok, we can some other time.” he said acceptingly, making Mako let out a breath. “Um....are you ok?” he asked.
He nodded, “Yeah, yeah just......the whole move here kinda screwed with my whole.....thing. That make sense?” he asked as they both entered the elevator.
Midoriya nodded in understanding, out of all of their class, Mako was probably the most busy outside of school. “Well, if you need any help, you know that I’m ready to help!” he said with a smile of encouragement. Mako flashed him one back, whenever his role as Invincible interfered with his schoolwork, Izuku had been there to help him out.
“Thanks man. Any recommendations for movies?” he asked as the doors opened to the lobby area and the two friends walked out through the lobby. While not exactly a rule, it was recommended that a couple movies be presented as possibilities, so that way they had multiple options in case it was voted down. This was mainly due to Mineta wanting to recommend a movie that was most likely a skin flick from the title.
Izuku rubbed the back of his head unsurely, “Hmm, I don’t know....maybe a mystery movie?” he suggested.
Mako shrugged as they walked towards the doors of the dorm, as Izuku walked off towards the lawn to start training, Mako walked down the path towards the school for a few feet before courching down and launching himself into the air, flying a good ten stories up before adjusting his course and flying towards home.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
After swinging by home, saying hi to his mom and grabbing some movies that he and his dad used to watch. Mako swung by a convience store to get some popcorn before flying back to U.A.
Wind blowing through his hair, he coasted through the sky as he let his momentum carry him. Contrary to what most people thought for people who flew without the use of some mutant type quirk, flying could tire you out, something Mako had learned early on when his powers started manifesting. If h wanted to he could be back to the school within a minute but decided to take his time and just relax.
That lasted for about then seconds before he heard a scream down from the ground.
Looking down he saw a gigantic man chase after a more norml sized one down the street, the giant man was three times the size of a normal person with viens all over his arms, chest, and neck popping out. Reminds me of guy Izuku fought at the training camp. he thought as he flew down towards the steeet, tossing his bag onto a rooftop before landing in font of the man, “Alright buddy what’s-” he started before the man’s arm reeled back.
“Uh pal I woudln’t-!” he started before he swung his arm and punched the side of Mako’s face with a loud crack.
It wasn’t from Mako.
“GAHHH!!!” The villain shouted as he clutched his now broken hand.
“Dude I tried telling you.” Mako replied, “Look I don’t know why your chasing that guy but I can’t let you hurt him.” he said as the large man held his hand.
“Why are you after me! That guy robbed my store!!” he explained. Mako turned down the street and saw the man, who mark noticed had a duffle bag in his hand, was running across a four lane intersection.
“Oh crap! Hang on.” he said before zooming over across the ground, grabbing the man by the bck of his shirt and flying back over to the muscle man.
“Hey! Let me go!” the smaller man shouted, he looked a little older then Mako, maybe his early twenties at most.
The muscular bald man pointed at him, “You stole from my safe you little punk! I oughta-” he started as he raised his unbroken hand.
Mako pulled him back, and raised a hand to try and calm him down, “Woah, woah, let’s calm down a second. Have you called the police?” he asked. The man nodded, “Ok then we can just wait for them to arrive to sort this mess out.” he reasoned. The man took a deep breath before raising his hands, “Why’d you punch me by the way?” he asked.
“Well I thought you were with him, I mean your around the same age so I thought you were his partner or something.” he explained.
Mako nodded in understanding, he could see ho he came to that conclusion.
“Hey you better let me go! I’ll report you for using your quirk illegally!!” The thief threatened.
“Dude I’m a hero.” Mako replied bluntly.
“What?! No your not! Your a normal guy!” he replied.
“I left my costume at my dorm, what do you think I wear it every time I go out? It’s not comfortable wearing something under normal clothes.” he replied before hearing a siren pull around the corner. After the patrolmen arrived, Mako showed them both his license and they promptly arrested the thief, as they put him in the back of the cruiser, Mako flew up to the roof where he tossed his bag before shooting across the sky back to U.A.
As he flew over the wall surrounding U.A. he started his decent when he noticed someone sitting down on one of the path benches. She had long blonde hair that went down her back and a pair of glasses over her light blue eyes that were looking down at the ground. She wore a coverall that was the same shade as her eyes with her name across the left lapel, Melissa Shield, the newest student of U.A.
“Hey!” he called out, she looked up in surprised and smiled as he flew down from the sky. Touching down gently on the ground, he smiled at her.
“Hey Mako, nice to see you again.” she greeted welcomingly, however he noticed the dour tone her voice had.
Melissa had begun attending U.A. after the I-Island incident, her old school was sad to see her go, but the blonde girl felt that U.A. was a good change after what happened with her father. She had met Mako and the others at the I-Island Expo, she started attending U.A. after All Might pushed for her to get a role in the support course, since her father was currently.....indisposed, All Might was her legal Guardian.
“You......doing ok?” he asked politely.
The american girl let out a sigh, “I’m.....managing.” he admitted. He gesuted to the seat beside her on the bench and she nodded.
“Well, if you want to rant or just talk, I’m here.” he offered jokingly.
She giggled at his offer, “No, it’s not that. Everyone here has been really welcoming to me. It’s just......a lot.” she admitted. “Moving from America to here was......well I know everyone is still adjusting to the dorms, but it’s.....well it’s a little more challenging then I thought it would be.” she told him.
Mako frowned, he had been thrown off balance by moving here but it was just a matter of time until he recovered. Melissa though, she had to move halfway across the world to be here, and that was after her father turned her world upside down. Man and here I am saying how rough I have it. My mom is just a short flight away. he thought scoldingly to himself.
“Yeah.....look, you know that all of us in Class 1A are here for you right? If you ever want to talk or something....” he offered, knowing that she got along well with all of the classmates she met at the I-Island expo.
The turned to him and gave him a confident smile, “Oh I know! It’s just....I don’t want to be a burden to anyone else by having them listen to my problems.” she explained.
He smiled, he could understood that. With all the crap he’s had to deal with the past year, keeping it to himself seemed like the best for a while. “Well hey, listening to problems is what a hero does. Hell earlier when I was coming back I had to listen to a couple problems before I could help.” he said, abridging the events of what happened. The blonde girl smiled softly at him, and Mako felt his stomach flutter from it.
“Thank you Mako......oh! I’m not keeping you am I?” she asked, realizing he was carrying something in his bag.
He shook his head, “Nah, we’re having a movie night and I needed to grab some flicks from my home.” he said, opening the bag and showing her the selection he picked.
Her eyes widened in excitement as she picked one out, “Oh I know this one!” she said, showing him the Dawn of the Dead movie he picked out.
She watched his face turn somber for a second, “Yeah. Me and my dad would watch that every year on my birthday.....” he said before smiling a little at the memory. Melissa felt a pang of guilt, what her fther had done for Uncle Might had been questionable at best, everyone knew what Mako’s father ahd done had been horrifying. But it was still HIS dad, she knew that as well as anyone. “Um....do you want to join us?” he offered.
Melissa was surpised by the offer but quickly smiled, “Of course! You don’t mind?” she asked.
He shook his head, “Nah, no one will. We’re starting at 9:30, be sure to be at the dorm by then.” he said as they both got up.
Melissa smiled and nodded, “I’ll be there!” she said ecitedly as she walked away, “And....thanks for listening Mako.”
He shrugged his shoulders, “Anytime.” he said before taking off into the sky and arching over to his dorm.
As he walked up to the door he felt his phone go of in his pocket. Pullig it out as he entered, he saw the caller I.D. and frowned, answering it, he flew up the stairs to his room. “Hey boss, what’s the problem.”
‘You remember the Elephant?’
Mako paused as he opened and closed the door to his room, “Uhhh.....no?” he said unsurely.
‘Big guy, dresses up like....well-’
“Oh! Oh yeah that guy, man I always forget about him.” Mako admitted as he tossed off his shirt and pants and slipped his costume on. It was mostly black with the shoulders and upper torso being covered with a light blue that curved around his pectorals and upper back but ended on a sharp end on his shoulders. on  his chest and over the blue was a yellow block that went down from his pectoals and tapered off to a point towards the navel.
‘Yeah everyone does, anyway the transport containing him on the way to Tartarus was hit. Heroes are on the way with Endevor leading them, but I don’t want them getting away. So you go as backup.’
Mako pulled on the knee high boots that were the same blue as his costume, along with the yellow fingerless gloves. “Gotcha, is he the only one? I mean it’s the Elephant so I can’t imagine you need a full transport for him.” he explained.
‘Yeah, you’d be right. Some new baddie who just popped up. Don’t know who he is, but we can’t ahve a loss right now after All Might retired.’
Mako grabbed his mask, a yellow head sock that had an opening for his hair around his head and coverd his eyes with white goggles. It also streched around his neck and the top of his shoulders, making a ‘i’ on the front of his costume. Opening his balcony, he cracked his neck before taking off into the air. “I read you.”
‘Thanks Mako, you sure your up for this I can call someone else if you still need some time to recover.’
Mako smiled to himself.
“Don’t worry Boss, you know me. I’m-”

Oh my god, fucking Tumblr and their fucking new messaging system, I keep sending the asks into nowhere. GAH! Where do they go? Why make it unnecessarily difficult? People, I am over half century old* and while I am actually pretty fucking savvy when it comes to the net I am also Autistic and I don’t like change! I don’t like it! I don’t want it! If it ain’t broke then don’t fix it just to justify your salary!
Thank you for coming to my Ted Rant Talk.
IN ANY CASE
To answer your question about whether Wu was straight in the show...I have talked about this before (somewhere, I am not going to go chase that post down, I haven’t had a full cup of coffee yet) but my answer to that is that I think Bryke queer-coded the fuck out of him, absolutely. However, I think they did that in order to present him as this annoying, playboy prince. And as two white cis straight dudes of a certain age**, they were not consciously aware of their bias that way.
For a very, very long time in media - and still happening today, I am deeply sorry to say - men being portrayed as effeminate was meant to emasculate them, was meant to make them annoying and yet without threat. Was it sometimes a hidden code meant to make us understood that the character was gay? Well, for the people who were in on the secret, sure. But for the rest of us, no. He was just an annoying effeminate dude who was zero threat to anyone.
(To give an example of this...back when I was at university in Northern California, in the late 80′s-early 90′s, there was a very nice girl living in my freshman dorm who was from Nebraska. And one night we were all hanging out in the dorm lounge, watching The Simpsons together - yes, that show is that old, like me - and through a conversation we had it became very clear that this girl had no idea that Smithers was 100% gay. As in. Super gay. As in, in love with Mr. Burns and playing with his Barbie collection and dressing up nicely and hosting an after hours gay dance club at the power plant gay. She was genuinely shocked when the rest of the folks watching it agreed that Smithers was gay. She had no idea whatsoever, and that’s because in Nowhere, Nebraska, where she grew up, The Gay simply was not a thing that was ever discussed or hinted at except to be used as an insult for people you didn’t like. She had zero context for all of the queer coding for Smithers and so she just never saw it. She was not then and is not now alone in this.)
Now, I have said before and I will say it again, but having an actual queer person in their entire production crew might have meant someone would have taken Bryke aside and said, “My guys, Wu is super queer-coded, so you either need to let that play out with Mako OR you need to make him annoying in another way that isn’t homophobic, okay?”
(And no, they do not get a pass for Korra and Asami or even Avatar Kyoshi because plenty of cis straight dudes will happily write lesbian and/or bisexual women but to the best of my knowledge there are no MALE gay and/or bisexual characters in that canon universe and that’s a thing. That’s a real ass thing. That’s a real ass super annoying and homophobic thing.)
I do not know what to say to people who claim that Wu is not gay because he (unsuccessfully) hits on women a lot. Like April from Nebraska, I believe they have zero context on how The Gay really is. Maybe Wu doesn’t know he’s gay! Maybe he’s been indoctrinated in the idea that he’s the King and has to marry a lady (or ladies, the Earth Kingdom is based on Imperial China, after all) and thinks that’s his duty. Maybe he’s just trying (without any success) to make Mako jealous. Maybe he’s looking for a good beard. Maybe he’s bisexual and he really does want to bang both Asami and Mako! (And who could blame him.) I mean. There are plenty of reasons why Wu could be queer and still be awkwardly throwing himself at flirting with women.
So no. I do not think Bryke were queerbaiting when they wrote Wu the way they did. I do not think they think of themselves as homophobic at all, either. I think they wrote Wu the way they did without really thinking it through. If they were to have Wu hook up with Mako in the comics I’d forgive them for it but uh, I am not holding my breath. Sorry, Bryke. But you let your asses hang out in the wind when it came to Wu and homophobia. You do not get a free get out of jail for it, either. But it’s fine, I wrote over a million words of fanfic that took care of that, so. I can go and read my own fanfic if I want an unapologetically queer Wu.
TL;DR - I do not think that Bryke intended Wu to be queer in TLOK. However, due to their own biases and due to the work done by the animators as well as Sunil Maholtra (Wu’s voice actor) I think Wu absolutely 100% reads as queer.
*Ooooh, saying I am over a half century old makes me feel like a vampire.
**Not quite old enough to be vampires but getting damn close.

Established Relationship, Kallus gets his own ship, based on a Star Wars Adventures story, probably going to be jossed soon,
Summary:  As the Rebels search for a new home following the assault on Mako-Ta base, Kallus is given a new assignment.
Notes:  Sequel to A Safe Haven!
I fully expect this to be proven wrong as soon as we get more Star Wars Adventures comics with Kallus and his crew in them, but damn it if I didn’t already come up with my own ideas before finding out there would be further stories.
The Lasana, as always, comes from Anath_Tsurugi’s brilliant mind.
Cross posted from AO3 to celebrate 200 followers!
Home One was a busy ship in the days after the Rebellion fled Mako-Ta base.  Their retreat plans had been thrown into disarray by the arrival of Darth Vader.
Stormtroopers, even Death Troopers, could be handled.  But how could regular Rebel troops hope to last against a Sith Lord?
They hadn’t been able to and they’d lost a lot of men in the trying, General Draven among them.
The Rebellion was in space, all crammed into Fleet ships while the Council debated a new base.
Kallus hoped it was news of such a base that made General Cracken, head of Intelligence, call him to his office, but he couldn’t be sure.
When Kallus entered the tiny office, Cracken – a middle-aged human with graying hair – was poring over a datapad, so Kallus stood by the door until he was acknowledged.
After a few minutes, Cracken looked up.  Kallus saluted and then sat in the chair Cracken indicated.
“Captain Kallus, you’ll forgive me for running late,” Cracken said.  “We’re just waiting for General Syndulla.”
Suddenly, Kallus felt like a child about to be chastised.  He ran through his behavior for the last few months and couldn’t think of any way he’d offended someone.  Ever since the battle of Scarif, he’d been serving as part of the Ghost’s crew, going on raids and scouting locations and other ‘in-the-field’ missions.  It’d been an ideal setup, allowing him the freedom to leave the base frequently and feel like he was making a significant contribution to the Alliance while being able to share a bed and a life with Zeb.
He wouldn’t change anything.
Well, that wasn’t quite true.  He chafed a little under Hera’s leadership – nothing to do with Hera herself, but Kallus had always been in command as an Imperial and he missed having the sort of authority an ISB agent wielded.  He missed being in control of his own actions, his own missions, his own destiny.
A soft knock sounded and Hera slipped into the room.  Kallus returned her smile, covering his nerves easily.
Hera nodded at Cracken and the general cleared his throat.  “Captain, I assume you’re familiar with the Imperial Freighter we captured over Kile II?”
Kallus was indeed familiar with the ship.  Zaarin’s commandos had taken control of it almost bloodlessly.  “Gozanti-class,” he said.  “Looks to be pre-Empire but modified for Imperial service.”
“You’re familiar with that class of ship, I understand.”
Kallus glanced at Hera, but her face betrayed nothing.  “Yes, sir. I often flew or commanded one during my ISB days.”
“That’s what General Syndulla told me.”  Cracken leaned forward on his desk.  “Captain, you’re being reassigned.”
Reassigned?  No!  “Where am I needed, sir?”
“I’m granting you command of our new ship.  You’ll need a crew.  I’ll give you some leeway in selecting them, but you’re being assigned a protocol droid.” Cracken glanced up at Hera, who gave Kallus a soft smile.
“I’m keeping Zeb and Rex,” she said,  “but you can pick almost anyone else.”
Kallus had known, in his gut, that Zeb wouldn’t leave Hera and Jacen anyway, but it hurt to hear he was being separated, even if it did mean his own command again.
“This assignment comes with a promotion,” said Cracken, pulling out a new rank tab.  “Congratulations, Commander Kallus.”
Still trying to digest all the information being thrown at him, Kallus picked up the rank tab and nodded. “Thank you, sir.  What sort of assignments can I expect?”
“You’ll be Fleet command, but most of your missions will come from Intelligence.  I presume you don’t mind picking up the mantle of Fulcrum again?”
“I didn’t ever put it down,” Kallus said.
“Good.  Then you’re dismissed, Commander.  I’ll expect your crew transfer requests by the end of tomorrow.”
Kallus nodded and left in a bit of a daze.  He wandered down to Home One’s main docking bay, where the newly-captured Transport 478 sat.  Mechanics swarmed over it, removing carbon scoring and repainting the yellow and gray accents.
“Nice lookin’ ship, isn’t she?”
“Garazeb,” Kallus said, relief flooding his chest.  “Did Hera tell you?”
“That you’re getting a promotion and a transfer?  Yeah.” Zeb sounded just as enthused as Kallus was.  He turned the conversation back to the ship, obviously a safer topic.  “You know, she needs a new name.  Something Rebellion-y.”
Kallus leaned into Zeb’s side.  “You know what she kind of looks like?”
“Huh?”  Zeb’s eyes narrowed as he peered at the ship. “She’s bigger ‘n the Ghost, that’s for sure.  I dunno what else.”
“The paint job,” Kallus pointed out.  “Yellow on top, gray on bottom.  She looks like that meteorite from Bahryn.  The one that kept us warm.”
“Mostly warm,” Zeb corrected.  He cocked his head.  “You’re right, she does.  So what? Gonna name her the Meteorite?”
“Maybe.  Maybe she needs a different name.  Something the meteorite represented.”  Kallus crossed his arms and thought.  “Something to do with hope, maybe.  Or warmth.”
“Ollirahnd Kasmera,” Zeb said after a few moments’ contemplation.  “Means ‘Glimmer of Hope’.”
“‘Glimmer of Hope’,” Kallus repeated.  He turned it over in his head a few times.  “The Rebellion could use hope right now, I think.”
Zeb wrapped an arm around Kallus’s shoulder.  “You think you can pilot this thing?”
Kallus scowled. “Garazeb, I’ll have you know I’m quite a good pilot.  You just haven’t seen me fly much.”
“Oh?  Better than me, are you?”  Zeb grinned, pressing a kiss to Kallus’s temple.  “I think we should test that.”
Huffing a laugh, Kallus replied, “In the simulators.  I don’t want you crashing my new ship.”
Zeb gasped in feigned offense.  “Alexsandr Kallus, are you implying I can’t fly a ship?”
“I know you’re a decent pilot,” Kallus said.  “But you’re not a really good one.  There’s a reason Hera doesn’t let you fly the Ghost, just the Phantom II.”
Zeb laughed.  “Okay, good point.”
Kallus smiled, but said nothing.  Slowly, his grin fell, becoming something sad and miserable.  “I don’t want this,” he said.  “I want to stay on the Ghost with you.”
“And I’d come with you if Hera’d let me, “ Zeb said.  “But you’re a victim of your own abilities.  You’re too good at this stuff.  They saw you lead the commandos, they know you fly well.”
“I could refuse the promotion and position,” Kallus said.  “Stay with you.”
Zeb stood there for a moment, obviously considering the idea.  “No,” he said finally.  “It’s where you’re needed.  They were gonna split us up sooner or later.”
Kallus felt a jolt. “You’re not saying–”
“No!” Zeb said quickly. “No, I’m not saying we should split up.  I’m just saying it was silly to believe we’d get to stay together the whole time.”
It wasn’t silly, Kallus wanted to argue.  It was everything I was fighting for.  “I suppose you’re right.”
“‘Course I’m right,” Zeb said, giving Kallus’s shoulders a squeeze.  “Come on, it’s dinnertime.”
Zeb slid his arm down Kallus’s back and caught his hand so they could walk together to the mess.
The fare on Home One was not quite as varied as the food on Yavin IV had been, but it was edible and, most importantly, not a nutrient paste, so Kallus was happy with it. He picked out a few spoonfuls of promising-looking dishes and followed Zeb to an empty table.
Their table didn’t stay empty for long.  Hera joined them, as did Zaarin, Kallus’s former roommate.  The talk, of course, was all of Kallus’s promotion.
Hera seemed apologetic. “I’m sorry to see you two split up, but General Cracken was insistent.”
Kallus gave her a small, reassuring smile.  “It’s really okay,” he said, even though it wasn’t.  “It was bound to happen at some point.”
“So who’re you picking for your crew?” Zaarin asked, raking back his shaggy hair from his face.  “You need a commando, right?”
“You want to give up command?” Kallus asked.  “What will Orenth-2 do without you?”
“They’re planning on merging us with Major Lissiri’s unit,” Zaarin said.  “So I’m history either way.  Might as well go out and see the galaxy, not just battlefields.”
Kallus chewed his food, thinking.  Did he really want to work with Zaarin?  The man was a friend and they’d survived living together, but… well, Zaarin could be a bit grating.  “Fine,” he said after a minute.  “I’ll submit your name.”
“Great!”  Zaarin leaned forward.  “Now, if you really want to make me happy, you’ll ask that new elomin in Intelligence, too.  I hear she’s killer with a Kyuzo petar.”
Everyone else at the table sighed.  Zaarin’s penchant for aliens – especially aliens with horns, such as elomin – was well-known.
“Tell you what,” Kallus said.  “If you can tell me her name, right now, I’ll ask her.  But if she’s just ‘the new elomin…’”
“Mikal,” Zaarin answered quickly.  “I do pay attention to that sort of thing, you know.”
“No, we don’t know that,” Zeb laughed.  “Gotta say, I’m surprised.”
Hera grinned, too. “Looks like you’ve got two crew members already, Kallus.”
“Only if Cracken approves all the transfers,” Kallus said.  “So Zaarin, you’re good with explosives and apparently this Mikal is good with melee weapons.  I’m a good ranged shot.  We have a droid.  What are we missing?”
“You want a mechanic,” Hera said.  “Can’t tell you the number of times I’ve found myself wishing we had one.”
“Hey!” Zeb protested. “I do that sort of work!”
Hera smiled.  “You do and you do it well.  But it’d be nice to have you in a turret while someone else works on the shields when they fail.  I don’t want to have to choose where you go.”
Zeb leaned back in his chair.  “Fair enough,” he said.  He turned to Kallus.  “Grab a verpine if you can.  If not, grab Jaci.”
Kallus nodded.  Jaci had never quite bounced back after losing her cousin and both her lovers so close together back on Yavin IV.  Instead she’d thrown herself into her work, quickly becoming the most sought-after of the human mechanics.  Kallus had a fond spot for her; she’d been one of the first people on Yavin to show him kindness.  Perhaps a change would do her well.  “If Daine lets her go,” he agreed.  “Anyone else?”
Hera shrugged.  “We got along with a group of five for a good while before Ezra joined us and I’m sure between you and Zaarin, you can smooth-talk your way out of bad situations one way or another.”
Kallus wasn’t sure if he should be offended or not.  He’d use diplomacy if he could but Zaarin would probably flirt his way out of trouble.
And, knowing the bastard, it would work.
“All right.  I’ll get those names to Cracken.”  Under the table, Kallus reached out for Zeb’s hand, giving it a soft squeeze.
“So does this make us all Fulcrum agents, too?” Zaarin asked.  “‘Cause that’s really good for–”
Hera cleared her throat and Zaarin stopped mid-sentence.  Continuing as if Zaarin hadn’t been about to make a lewd comment, she said, “I think Kallus will be the only Fulcrum agent, although you can talk to General Cracken if you’re truly interested.”
Zaarin laughed.  “No, I’ll let K handle that one.  I was just curious.”
Kallus and Zeb shared a glance and the lasat rolled his eyes.  “I think Kal and I need to go,” Zeb said.  “Got stuff for him to do.”
Cheeks warm with embarrassment, Kallus let himself be dragged off back to the Ghost.
“Garazeb,” Kallus said, casting about for the right words.  “Are you sure you’re all right with me taking this position?  We’ll both be gone so often.”
“But you’re not gone yet,” Zeb reasoned.  “We’ll worry about that when it happens.”  He reached out and pulled Kallus close, into a deep kiss.
Kallus closed his eyes and focused on the kiss: the taste and tang of Zeb, the feel of lips and sharp fangs against his.  They’d gone through so much to get to the point where Zeb felt comfortable kissing him, Kallus hated to do anything to mess that up.
Reaching behind him, he hit the door controls and pulled Zeb back into their cabin.  “Ollirahnd Kasmera,” he murmured, between kisses. “You realize Glimmer of Hope is a terribly sentimental name?”
“So call it the Glimmer.  Or the Kasmera.”  Zeb shrugged. “Better ‘n Glowy Rock That Kept Me Warm.”
Kallus laughed and cupped Zeb’s jaw, running his thumb through the lasat’s bristly beard.  “I do love you, Garazeb,” he said.
Zeb arched his brows. “Now who’s the sentimental one, Alex?”
“Only because you made me so.”
Zeb pushed Kallus back on the bed.  “Guess I rubbed off on you the right way.”
“Something like that,” Kallus laughed again.
“Tomorrow we’ll get you moved into your new quarters and then break ‘em in properly,” Zeb said.  “But you’re not leaving on that ship yet. We’re still together for tonight. And I have plans for you.”
“Plans?”  Kallus grinned.  “Show me.”
And Zeb did.
Kallus lay there after, wrapped in Zeb’s arms, running his fingers idly through thick purple fur.
Glimmer of Hope, he thought.  The Glimmer.  I can work with that.
He used to think there wasn’t the slightest bit of hope for both of them to make it through the war together, but Zeb’s steady belief in something better had wormed its way into Kallus’s heart.
Thanks to Zeb, he had more than just a glimmer of hope that there was something for them on the other side of this long war.
And that something was worth fighting for.
Worth living for.

me  since book 1 of legend of korra when  ever people try to claim mako was a womanizer, gary stu ( which requires a misunderstanding of what a gary stu is nad  makos character   people have thrown that term around to any character they dont like ) , or creators pet , manipulator    ,  when that was never the case     ( he never was  mako is a human being who makes mistakes the narrative always acknowledged his flaws as things that needed to be worked on the idea that if a character makes mistakes and isnt specifically punished for them and good things happen to him afterwards   its rewarding him for his flaws is nonsense    the claim that he needed to suffer or have good things taken from him is bs  korra was just as responsible for the love triangle as mako and claim that mako ending the show single was karma is nonsense he shouldnt be punished for not being perfect and making mistakes ( which is why korrasami only became popular due to the hate for mako and a desire for lgbt rep not due to any actual chemistry or because it would make sense ( korrasami was thrown in at the last minute as a retcon and publicity stunt/political statement optimistic view : bryke genuinely thought they would be doing good  and helping people  they compromised the story  narrative by throwing it in at last minute  cynical  publicity stunt either way they tried to cover their asses by casting aspersions on critics
the narrative they made led to the idea korra would end the show single with possibly a hint to makorra getting back together I cant help but rolly my eyes when I think how certain fans would react to that there would be claims of queerbaiting when they queerbaited themselves nothing hinted at korrasami the only way you could see evidence is if you were wearing shipping goggles or ending up unhappy to be frank I would change  ) (  and this was the case ever since I watched b1 ( I was part of the fndm since the first episode came out)
“Censorship explains why we couldn’t get a kiss and an “I love you” in the finale or blatant romantic scenes, not the utter lack of Korra-Asami interaction as a whole. They had six (to six and a half) minutes of interaction in the last season, spread out over six interactions/conversations. They’ve had nearly no on-screen interaction since “Long Live the Queen,” actually. They had the 5 second “I can come to the South Pole” convo in “Korra Alone” (which Korra refused), the single letter, their interactions in “Reunions,” and then the tea scene in “Remembrances.” After that, they don’t speak again until the last two minutes of the finale. The episode after “Remembrances” is the Korra-Mako field trip to the Spirit Wilds and Zaheer’s prison and the culmination of Korra’s recovery arc. Where was Asami? She had two lines in the whole episode, and they were both to Varrick.”
the aspersions Bryan cast on the fandom for not accepting what amounted to a last-minute retcon have been functioning (whether intentionally or not) to shield the creators from any criticism for their own fault in the poor execution of their endgame ship, allowing them to take all of the credit for being “subversive” and none of the blame for breaking their existing narrative to do it.

it often feels that
I never liked prince wu and the only reason  some people liked him  was because he bothered mako  if I could change prince wu I would follow what ikkinthekitsune said to have mako happy
ikkinthekitsune . tumblr . com/post/147464055579/considering-you-understandably-have-some-issues
Biggest change to the initial setup?  No Prince Wu.  Instead of an obnoxious overgrown child of a Prince, our heir apparent is introverted, lacks the confidence to refuse just about anything, and is terrified of being in front of crowds.  He’s the (implied-to-be illegitimate) child of a distant relative of Hou-Ting and a Republic City citizen.  Oh, and he’s all of ten years old.  In other words, everything about him screams “Raiko chose this kid as a convenient puppet” (instead of offhandedly implying it once and forgetting about it as was done with Wu). All of the time Wu wastes on comic relief in After All These Years is used to explain the political situation: the prince is a figurehead meant to display the trappings of royalty and legitimize Raiko’s chosen advisors.  Kuvira’s supporters hate him not just because he’s royalty but also because they think he’s essentially giving the Earth Kingdom away to an imperialistic foreign power.  Mako’s there to protect him both because Raiko ordered him to and because he’s one of the few cops the prince is comfortable around; as such, Mako actually feels bad for the kid and wants to protect him. (This prince is legitimately terrified by the scary adults throwing pies at him and bursts into tears as soon as they’re out of harm’s way.  Mako comforts him and makes him feel a little better.) Korra Alone is close to perfect and stays pretty much as-is, albeit with Korra’s loss in the Earth Rumble ring being far less embarrassing – she gets some hits in, and the end makes it even clearer how distracted she was by Dark Avatar Korra. The Coronation follows up on the political changes.  Instead of being all excited about how awesome he thinks the ceremony is going to be, the prince is afraid – of being on stage (Mako assures him he’ll do fine), of being king (Raiko assures him that his advisers will do all the work), and of Kuvira (Raiko assures him that she’ll step down).  The prince thanks Kuvira and lets her speak the way Wu did in the show, except that it’s sort of implied that he’s looking for an excuse to not have to stay up at the podium for longer than necessary.  Kuvira, of course, uses the opportunity to take over… and specifically points to Raiko’s use of the prince to control the Earth Kingdom as a reason why she’s justified in doing so.  (The prince hides behind Mako when this happens.  =( )  Some of the time saved by not having Wu freak out about the loss of his throne is used to show us the meeting of the world leaders, where they talk about why they think Kuvira is dangerous (she’s very with-me-or-against-me) and what they can do to stop her (not much as long as she limits her ambitions to the Earth Kingdom).
The Republic City part of Reunion is way more tense because Team Avatar are looking for a terrified kidnapped child instead of an aggravating jerk.  (The prince still gets to ask Korra to go into the Avatar State because he wants to see her eyes glow, but it’s actually kind of endearing since he’s a little kid.)
and only people who wouldnt like it is mako haters who demonize him for being a human being who makes mistakes and twists him to be something he isnt  to point where they claim bs things like claiming he called asami a leech when no it was a figure of speech it was avatar equivalent to ripping off a bandaid.
or whining that he was a bit of a jerk at the start or not immediately nice ( when mako is someone who unlike bolin has an icy demeanor and is wary of bringing new people in to circle  but when you are in he will die for you he has been compared to zuko minus angst for a reason  he was a jerk with a heart of gold he isnt going to be immediately friendly with people  like bolin
( I cant help but think of the people who would say zuko should have suffered at the end   )

Here's a piece I started work on for pride month last June, in 2019, but left it unfinished since I was exhausted from my internship and barely had time for anything else.. And apparently, I forgot to post my notes / (short) review of "Ruins of the Empire: Part One" as well. TT_TT
BUT, I'm gonna make up for my mistake by posting them at once. I hope you like it! I really loved this trilogy (well, so much that I felt the need to draw these two gay lovebirds, as you can clearly see..). I mean, look at Korra's cute, excited face when Asami kisses her on the cheek in this panel:
Tumblr media
She's soooo adorable and in love! (。◕ヮ◕。) (They both are.) This scene was practically begging for a redraw, I couldn't help myself. You can read my review under the cut.
Twitter | my art / sketches
Varrick has to schedule a date with his wife.
That subtle handholding between Korra and Asami when Zhu Li greets King Wu. I'm grinning like an idiot and my heart's bursting with joy. That's so sweet!
Please note that Mako's hand isn't in a sling anymore. Kya has done an amazing job. I'm so proud of my lesbian cloudbaby (and so is Katara).
Grandma Yin is still great, she has a portrait of Wu, too.
Wu getting nervous before breaking out in song is a relatable feeling when public speaking.
In the panel where Zhu Li takes over to answer the journalists' questions she seems so beautiful and elegant and intelligent. I love that this trope for women is represented in the Avatar world as being successful in life, especially since she's a rather quiet type of person and a.. conservatively dressing one.. and slightly nerdy-looking, if you will, but she's one badass President.
Besides Irene Koh, the previous author of the "Turf Wars" trilogy, I'd like to thank these authors for also drawing a character wearing a hijab in the background of the panel where Kuvira's war crimes are being read aloud.
I love the world map in President Zhu Li's office and the modest, but cosy interior design.
Korra looks forward to meetings with her, she's so sweet to say that.
How do Korra and Asami look so pretty in every single panel in this comic? (I'm talking about the one where Asami reminds Wu that Kuvira surrendered to Korra.)
Reading this comic reminds me how much I loved Book 4 and all the new characters like Wu and Kuvira and how much I loved this series in general. Gosh, I desperately need a rewatch, it's been 3 4 YEARS!
Aww, poor Bolin! I hope he finds his calling soon.
Korra and Asami are holding hands again, I'm squeeing.
Again.. the handholding when Korra comforts her.
Korra's freaking adorable face when Asami kisses her. I can't handle the cuteness in this panel!
"And let's not forget how she ruined my coronation!" Oh my gosh, Wu, not the best timing! Everyone's expressions / glares are hilarious.
"I promised I'd always have your back Korra. So I'm in." Mako is making me cry, that was his last line in the series. This is so nostalgic and heartwarming!
"We might be working together, but we are not teammates. If you step out of line, or do anything to harm my friends, I won't hesitate to take you down. Do we have an understanding?" This threat reminds me of Katara's talk with Zuko right after he joined them and began his redemption arc.
Republic City's silhouette / landscape is still breathtaking and beautiful.
"Let's go, Wu. It's starting to stink in here." "Sorry, I tooted." Okay, this was pretty funny.
Korra comforting Wu that the United Republic took time to iron out its political kinks. That's really cool she's talking about the history of the fifth nation and its origins. Katara must've taught her so much, being there together with Aang when it all began after all...
I freaking LOVE protective and fierce Asami defending herself and her girlfriend from Kuvira. I mean: "I'm exactly where I want to be-- protecting Korra from YOU. So whatever little game you're playing it's not going to work. You're not going to drive a wedge between me and Korra."
"I've seen what lies at the end of that path-- DEATH AND DESTRUCTION." This is such a powerful line.
Naga is growling as Commander Guan hands in his candidacy, good girl!
Korra's lit up face when she mentions Toph.
We all knew Toph was gonna come back, but we didn't know WHY and now we do and I'm excited!
All in all, I am thrilled to have read this book and to own a copy of it 'cause, exactly like with "Turf Wars", it felt like an actual episode of the series. It was just.. SO.. GOOOOD!
