To the Trainers and battlers who read this, I am curious.

What tactics and strategies do you use that differentiate yourself from any other? Or are you a strictly orthodox Trainer?

There are many kinds of Trainers who use differing strategies. Some become more involved in the battle themselves- Considering things like releasing their Pokeball in specific places on the field, or timing their attacks. There are some who simply leave it all up to their Pokemon, viewing themselves as a coach more than an active part of the battle. Some will even modify their Pokeballs within League regulations so that they fly further. Pokemon battling is a display of bond between Trainer and Pokemon, which means many do see the Trainer as needing to add their own personal flourishes and touches to the battle strategy.

On the other hand, there is simply the orthodox type, who trains diligently and becomes strong in a normal way. Former Kanto Champion Green Oak was a known proponent of this type of training- Simply becoming stronger without special tricks would allow you to take on any opponent.

There are also the type who have a more 'wild' approach- By living in the wilderness with their Pokemon, they are able to approach battling in a more natural manner, and so their thinking is often more flexible than Trainers who only battle in League circumstances. Champion Red, of Kanto, and Champion Alder, of Unova, are known to be of this type.

Champion Iris, on the other hand, is a much more idiosyncratic Trainer. Due to her empathy with her Pokemon, she says she feels their pain as her own. As a result, she has developed a battle style based around an overwhelming first strike... and more importantly, she has become able to direct her Pokemon while they are still in their Pokeballs, allowing them to perform powerful strategies the very instant they are released from their balls.

What is your strategy? How do you show your individuality in a Pokemon battle? What do you do that no other Trainer can do?

So, I’m noodling around a Dragon Age/BG3 crossover in my head, which is basically an excuse to write Astarion tormenting Solas and becoming buddies with Dorian.

One theory I’ve incorporated into my Dragon Age work is that elves are spirits who have taken a body (before the veil - after, things are more complicated). Iris Lavellan is a spirit of Hope that slipped through the veil, finding a body “in the oven”, so to speak - something Solas was able to discern pretty early on. In The Wolf’s Flower, Solas, desperate not to be the one responsible for shifting Iris’ nature from Hope to Despair, sends an old friend of his, Creativity, to keep her company. Another friend of his, Loyalty, appears to her later on in the fic, and opts to take a physical body.

Now, this crossover would tentatively have Petra and Astarion entering an eluvian they find in a coven they’ve dismantled while they’re in the midst of looting the place. They wind up travelling through the Crossroads, ending up in the Deep Roads a year or two after the events of The Wolf’s Flower. Iris, Solas and Dorian find them in the Deep Roads and they all need to travel to get to another eluvian to escort Petra and Astarion home. Solas and Astarion really do not like one another - they admire parts of each other, but Astarion thinks Solas, as a sad sack ancient godlike being who nearly destroyed the world again, is wasting his power and potential. Solas thinks that Astarion, as a man who has seen the worst people are capable of, and who survived horrors, should have more empathy and do more to help the downtrodden around him. Iris and Petra just wish their boyfriends would stop bickering already.

One thing I’m pondering is what sort of spirit Solas thinks Petra and Astarion are. Their natures are a bit different, on account of the fact that they’re from another plane of existence (and Petra is a half-elf, which don’t exist in Thedas). Petra, I’m leaning towards Creativity or Vivacious.

Astarion is tougher. Maybe Resilience? He has such strength to have endured and survived all he did, but it’s a strength he doesn’t seem to be aware of. I think his loudest trait being something he can’t see in himself fits, as a man who is still learning who he is and what he wants to be, after so long without control of his body, or any say in what he wants in his life. But, an argument can be made for Vanity, or Wit as well.

okay so i just finished The Sun and The Star and thus am plagued with thoughts of demigod au’s so here are some of the thoughts:

(some of this is also inspired by The Star Seekers lore and what not)

Yeonjun: okay so,,,i’m kinda torn between child of ares and child of aphrodite. on the one hand there’s that firey almost aggressive drive and ambition. his agility and strength pose a threat on both the battlefield and the dance floor. then there’s also his,,looser temper. however, a lot of that can also translate over as a child of aphrodite. his intense passion and overwhelming compassion. his love and passion for performing such a prime motivator to continue pushing himself. a huge heart with so much love for all those in his life. Not to mention his interests in fashion and beauty and creating statements with clothes (or his flirting on weverse). children of aphrodite do also have their snappy moments as well. which is why i’ll say Yeonjun is a Child of Aphrodite.

Soobin: okay, so, i was actually having a rEALLY hard time with soobin. originally i thought perhaps athena, natural-born leader, but that didn’t feel entirely right. then maybe hephaestus? but definitely not right either. Demeter is a little too child-of-the-earth for him and Iris just doesn’t seem to work. Of course in Star Seekers soobin is an archer, but even Apollo doesn’t feel right. It was only after talk with someone else that it kind of settled where he belonged. Now, it’s be a little weird for a demigod to be unfit for the domain of their parent, but it’s not uncommon. In fact, many children’s mortal parents will actually instill fear of their godly parents element as though it will keep them safe. It’s odd that soobin, despite his inability to swim, comes across most accurately as a child of poseidon. however, the sea is equal parts powerful and terrifying and calm and comforting. a gentle giant, an imperfect leader, introverted and rarely commanding, but caring and willing in all of the ways needed. he reflects well in the push and pull of the tides. plus, getting the entire cabin to himself is kinda perfect. also, horse girl soobin 🤷 thus ends my long-winded, hard-to-decipher reasoning as to why i think Soobin is Child of Poseidon.

Beomgyu: gyu’s very base disposition is rather quiet and muted when you aren’t as close. as soon as you get to peel back layers you find the playfulness everyone talks about. Teasing is a form of affection yet he’s never devoid of kindness and a warm smile. Despite his nature as an introvert, he’s a very good addition to any welcoming committee. Also, the intelligence of children of Hermes is so often undermined despite them being incredibly resourceful and smart, both traits of Beomgyu’s that are commonly ignored. He has a compassion and sense of empathy that aligns well with those who take in all travelers, all those lost or forgotten. somewhat similar to a lost boy, beomgyu finds friends and family in everyone, with time of course. Hence why i think Beomgyu is a Child of Hermes

Taehyun: in an effort to not reduce Taehyun in to the tired “only braincell” stereotype, i wanted to avoid categorizing him under Athena. And after some consideration, i have come to a conclusion. Tyun is smart, he’s seen to be a very logical thinker and seems to have a lot of trivial knowledge. He has great emotional intelligence and physical strength. In any case, he would be able to fight a battle with both brain AND brawn. He’s an eloquent speaker with a dry sense of humor and a teasing nature. It’s a wonderful encapsulation of both a scholar and a fighter; someone known for knowledge AND strength on the battlefield. It’s often forgotten that those are both things honored in Athena’s name as the goddess of knowledge and warfare. Therefore, i think it’s very fitting to place Taehyun as a Child of Athena

Hueningkai: i think it’s really often forgotten that hueningkai is quite literally a musical prodigy. Drums, Guitar, piano, & vocals!!! Like that one clip of him casually playing Beethoven while talking about pikachu stickers ?!?!?? not to mention his almost sunshine-like disposition. there’s absolutely zero question as to whose kid he is. sure,,he could stand to improve his first-aid skills but, in times of need, there is no better quality than his compassion for every person in need. however, not even training from his father himself could save Kai’s archery skills 💀 of course, all of the members are incredibly talented artists, but Kai’s musicianship is on such a level i have no choice but to say he must be a Child of Apollo.

Synopsis

  You were at the top of your class. You had your pick of where you wanted to go the Silver Guardians or the White Hawks. But during Graduation, something happened. You lost control of your body and watched as you killed your friends and hurt several people. When you got control again you woke up in jail. Sentence for ten years. No one listened or cared what you said after all killing the United States President's kid was what everyone cared about. What makes it worse you don't remember the 10 years and your abilities are gone.

  Now the only thing left to do is to try and rebuild the life that was taken from you. Noah the man who raised you gave you a choice. It was the only choice you had. To become an Instructor for the White Hawks teaching young Heros. He also gave you a small team to be in charge of three students no one can seem to get along with or lead. With you in charge of a team, you can get answers. Can you show these three students what it means to be a hero, or will you lead them to a darker path? Will you get answers for what happened to you?

When you first met, they ignored you but as you fought together you gained their respect as a hero. But they have never talked to you as a friend almost like they resent your ability to win everyone over like a magic spell. Can you get them to see that you truly care for them?

Description- Once a Hero who turn Villain. One of the only people who can run at the speed of light. Is the most wanted man for the crimes he committed. You heard once he would do anything for the innocent.

One of Silver Guardians' strike team leaders. Atlas is well-regarded as very laid back and even fun by her teammates. Then she sees you. She always has her eyes on you. The other thing you notice is she seems drawn to you.

Hair- Ash Blonde, lower back length.

Powers- Sympathetic teleportation, magical particle manipulation.

13. Atargatis or Attina- F (RO)

The crown princess of the Atlanteans. You know her father King Vomox. She is one of the richest people in the world and it shows. Of course, her being a half-breed between an Atlantean and a Siren shows. She seems to want to be friends when she meets you but you suspect she wants more than friendship.

Hair- Black, shoulder-length,

One of the villains is a part of the bigger community of villains. She is not seen as regularly anymore by the public. But you remember seeing her once and she took down an entire strike team without breaking a sweat.

Lizzie has always worked alone as a hero but occasionally works with Justice League. She knew Barry before but he never knew she had magical powers until she helped the Justice League defeat Steppenwolf. Barry and Lizzie went to school together but did not develop a friendship when she helped the Justice League. Though Elizabeth and Iris are both good friends, the three went to school together. 

Outside of her being a hero she has worked in Wayne Enterprise and now in an internship at Central City Police Department. 

Lizzie already got Barry's goto sandwich PB and BRHC on a roll, The Peanut Butter, Banana, Raisins, Honey and Cheese on a roll. Knowing that Sara the curly haired girl isn't currently working at the coffee shop. Sara knew Lizzie and Barry are her regulars. But the Barista guy is so slow. Barry is gonna be stuck. 

Lizzie went straight to the Police Department on time for the meeting to present case. Though she senses danger in Gotham. She did bilocation. Her other body is staying at the Research Center for the presentation, without Barry on cases which she has finished. Her other body magically changes to her Superhero suit. Lizzie saw her phone ring, and Alfred appeared. She answers the call. "Good Morning! Ms. Fernandez, I'm glad you are able to pick up the phone. I can always rely on you." She sighed. Her pink headset magically appears. Already on the go. That a hospital is collapsing. "Alfred,I sense danger and you come to call me and beep me whenever you wanna reach me.' Still concentrating on pretending to work on cases. Alfred called her before Barry. With no questions and complaints she's on it to save the city. 

Barry is stuck with the barista guy, "Morning. What can I get you?" Sounding unamused seeing Barry. Clearly late Barry fidgeting. Checking his watch. Barry being disappointed. "Where is the curly haired lady?" 

"Sara? She's out sick. Or at least, that's what she says." Barista guy is gossip type of employee. Whispers the last sentence, "She's got a new boyfriend." Barry couldn't careless why she isn't here. "Oh." Barry says. He just needs something to eat. Right now. Barista guy finally asks him what he can get him.

Barry answers quickly. "Usually. It's my usual and she usually has it ready because I'm usually late." 

"Well, don't keep me in suspense." Not knowing Barry's usual. Barry orders a PB and BRHC on a Roll. Then explains what's in the sandwich. 

Barista Guy interrupts him, "Actually you know this girl ordered the exact same sandwich as you." He said excitedly like a strain princess voice. "Well aren't you lucky you got a girlfriend." 

Barry says, "She's not my myy grr girlfriend were just colleagues" His ears turning red. He can't think of her that way. No. 

Barista guy teases him, "Keep telling yourself that. She came here and asked for two. And said it was for a friend of hers. I told her. Doesn't he have a fast metabolism?" 

Barista guy winking writing down his order. He just kept yapping, running his mouth. 

"-Are you running a marathon? My sister ran a marathon once, God rest her soul. She's not dead. We get it Sharon you ran. But everyone has to work in the morning."

Barry, "And sorry I'm in sort of a rush for the sandwich" Trying to find his phone. Barista guy. "You can't rush a good sandwich dude." 

Alfred calls Barry with Lizzie on the other line. Lizzie teleported to the hospital. Saving everyone in the building. Alfred is making coffee. 

Barry answers, "Alfred, Lizzie. Really can't talk."

Alfred is making coffee. "Good Morning. Mr. Allen." 

Barry places his phone over his ear, walking away from the Barista guy. "No, I'm late. And I'm starving and curly haired girl isn't here." 

Lizzie, "Her names Sara and she got a boyfriend. Don't worry Bare I got you two sandwiches ready." 

Barry rolls his eyes. "Yeah! Well I need it right now." Whining. 

Lizzie, "I would love to teleport it to ya. We're in need of your help. You're the fastest man alive how could you be late?" 

Barry, "I know. I know. I'm always late. I am so late. I am very late"

Alfred. "Yes, We have a situation at Gotham General. A robbery gone wrong. Lizzie is at the Hospital saving people from the building." 

Barry, "Of course Dara is! She can be in multiple places at once. Like 'Everything Everywhere All At Once'. I bet you she got an eye in the middle of her forehead. This is in the middle of the morning? Why is our bat-friend even awake?" Lizzie made a face over the eye comment and Batman "He can fight crime in daylight Barry! He's no vampire." 

Whisper yells "-You got Dara! Call Superman." Looking around seeing if anyone overheard him. Then looking over at the news on TV. He's clearly occupied. 

Alfred, "That was my first thought. Sadly. He's otherwise engaged."

Barry seeing that a volcano is erupting in Guatemala. "Classic. What about Diana?" 

Alfred reading his morning paper. "My other first thought. Rather annoyingly, she's not picking up." 

Barry was offended. "How many first thoughts, exactly, did you have before you first thought of me?" Clearly Superman, Wonderwoman, Dara, right after Batman are Alfred's first thought.

Alfred. "Well you know Lizzie she rarely complains on the go." Barry puts the phone down. Not listening to him. Barry ask, "Sorry is my sandwich rea-" See how the sandwich. It's not even close to being done. He rushes to the restroom to change into his suit. Now out of the coffee shop in seconds. Was about to run to Gotham. But comes across some of his fans. Not use to having any. Seeing that these fans have superhero pins including Dara's and The Flash.

Alfred. "Patching you and Ms. Fernandez to Mr. Wayne." 

Barry, "No, Please don't." After asking a fan for a chocolate bar "in the name of Justice" 

Bruce, "Lizzie is at the Hospital. I need you here now Barry." The fan threw it but Barry couldn't catch it because of low energy. They threw it at Barry's head. Annoyed. 

Barry, "Hi, Bruce. Yes, I'm... Coming" 

Lizzie, "About time. I am still working on teleportation and flight. I can't help everyone at once." Still presenting the cases like she is functioning well at the meeting without Barry. 

Barry sees that the mess with the hospital building collapsing and the roads are becoming sinkholes. Barry, "Bruce, this is a huge mess! Why aren't you here helping Lizzie?" 

Lizzie teleports, saving each patient and the staff at the hospital at a time and then comes across a group of nurses trying to help a baby nurse that is trapped in the room. 

Barry asks, " Bruce, why does it sound like you're fleeing the scene?" Bruce chasing Falcone's son in his batcycle. Bruce, "Falcone's idiot kid decided to try to play in the big leagues. He put a crew together and broke into the lab at Gotham General. Stole a highly deadly virus. I intercepted them, but they blasted their way out. Lizzie and you can handle the hospital Barry Someone else has to save the rest of the world. So, I was gonna do that If you don't mind." 

Barry, "Sounds about right Bruce." Muting Bruce but still having Lizzie. On the line. 

Barry saves a doctor from the sinkhole. But she runs away, not thanking him. "Thanks for saving me from the sinkhole, Flash." Says sarcastically. 

Alfred, "Barry, gas and water pipes ruptured. In the basement."

Barry, "Right. On it." Runs to the basement. Lizzie is trying to hold the entire building. "It's no longer safe to stay in the building." Telling the staff. Sending them out of the building. The baby nurse is screaming. Barry fixes the Water and Gas situation. 

Barry complains. "Look, Alfred. I've come to accept it. That I'm essentially the janitor of the Justice League. Which sucks. But I've come to accept it." 

Lizzie, "Barry, You're not the janitor of the Justice League. You can't just accept that." While Barry is still yapping, complaining. 

Barry continued his rant, "But, I can't help but notice... That it always seems to be a bat mess I'm cleaning up. 

Alfred, "If my calculations are correct, and history will prove they usually are, the foundational damage caused the collapse of the east wing." 

Barrys says, "The east wing is fine. Lizzie got it." Then mutters, " Like she always does." The baby nurse is holding the baby. Lizzie is about to fall. Then uses her flight but fails the babies and the baby nurse falls off the building. Not using her teleportation or her force field in time. 

"Barry, a little help please. Barry!!!" This didn't use her magic on time. 

"You hear that it's my stomach. Oh it's the collapsing east wing." The Flash. Hearing Lizzie screaming. Saves the nurse, service dog, babies, and Lizzie. While eating a falling burritos and snacks. Barry still holding on to Lizzie/Dara bridal style. Barry smiling as if he was presenting that all the babies are saved. the dog, despite all of that the nurse is still screaming. Lizzie getting his attention to let her go. Lizzie holds onto one of the babies. Then pets the dog.

Alfred congratulating Lizzie and Barry for working together. Then Barry hands the baby from the microwave to the nurse. Lizzie comforts the nurse. "You're okay, miss. The Flash and I saved the babies and service dog." 

Barry adds, "I understand that these events can be psychologically scarring. You should seek the services of a mental health professional. The Justice League is not very good at that part yet... Trust me." 

Lizzie teleports off to Batman. The Flash runs to where Batman and Falcone's kid. Are falling off the bridge, Falcone's Son drops the briefcase. Lizzie caught the briefcase on time. With her mind. Then Wonderwoman uses her whip pulling Bruce up. "Sorry I'm late." Smiling. 

Diana compliments Dara on catching that briefcase. "Hello, Dara, it's nice to see you. Caught that just in time." Lizzie excitedly then hugs Diana. Then Barry arrives. She then compliments flash, "Nice suit. Looking good Flash." Barry nervously, awkwardly thanks her. Diana turns to Bruce, "And you are welcome." 

Bruce, "My ego's far too big to say "thank you" to someone else." Both Diana and Lizzie gave him a look. 

Lizzie just said, "Bruce." Then Bruce had a hard time removing the whip from him and Falcone's Son. 

Bruce, "I developed this all powerful persona to compensate for my childhood trauma..." 

Falcone's Son raises his hand to look at all the heroes. "I too have childhood trauma." 

Lizzie. "Yeah... No kidding." The Lasso of Truth makes them spit out everything. 

Bruces continues. "I'd do a lot better just giving all my money away. Yes, if I really wanted to end crime, I should end poverty." Then Barry helps remove him from the Lasso of Truth. Barry and Lizzie can feel the sexual tension between Diana and Bruce. 

"I know sex exists. I've just never experienced it." Barry was about to keep on going but good thing he drops the whip. Lizzie jaw drops. Then she tries to cover her face and chuckles. She hates to admit it but she finds it adorable. Dropping the Whip. Then mutters, "Damn it." 

"Well. I have to run. It's always a pleasure." Diana Flies off. 

Barry looks at Lizzie and yells at Diana. "The sex thing was a metaphor. For... Gothic Literature... There is just no way to recover from that." 

Bruce firmly says, "Just let it go." 

Barry, "Well I'd love to stay here and clean up more mess. But this little superhero needs his breakfast."

Bruce, "Goodbye Flash, Dara." 

Barry, "Goodbye, Batman." 

Lizzie, "See ya. Bats"

Barry then turns to Lizzie, "No because, what was that?" Teasing him. She could tell he was turning a little red under his suit and felt he was nervous and his heart raised even more. Whenever she tease him. 

"Lizzie, can you stop, you heard our batfriend let it go. Please don't tell anyone about this." Lizzie was not one to make fun of anyone's sexual experiences or virgins. Then She couldn't help but check out his butt from his new suit. It looks really plump. Thank the heavens she didn't touch the suit she would've mentioned when Diana complimented his suit. 

Lizzie went back into one body at Central City Police Department, the research center. 

Patty and Albert coming up to Lizzie and always on Barry's ass teasing her and him. 

Patty near the printer next to Lizzie's desk, "Oh, little miss goody goody is always on time. When is your boyfriend ever going to come in on time? Oh, how cute you got him his little sandwiches."

"Speaking of the devil. Look who's here." Albert in his hoverboard sees a nervous Barry facing Professor Singh. 

"Everyday I don't know how you do it. Oh I know little miss goody goody covers for you. Isn't that sweet?" Patty now sees Barry following him along with Albert while Lizzie is still on her desk continuing her work. 

Barry tells Albert to Shut up. "Did you like to crawl here bro?" 

Barry turns to look at Albert. " Is he mad?" 

Patty, "Well, you're getting fired." 

Albert, "More like you're getting murdered." 

Dr. Singh sees Barry, "No, no, no, no. Let me guess. Your alarm clock didn't go off." Barry was about to explain himself. "N-" Then, Dr Singh continues. "Oh, your dog ate your alarm clock. Your alarm clock ate your keys. Your keys' grandmother died, and they need a personal day." 

Barry's eyes widened and nervously said, "It was none of those things." 

Dr. Singh walking away from Barry. "What was it this time, Barry?" 

Lizzie hands the papers to Barry. "It was, um, something else. That was far less outlandish. And I know I missed the meeting. But I'd still really like to present these case files for potential review. I think we rushed these cases. We need to reopen them."

Dr. Singh, "Oh! Rushed? We got a backlog six months deep, and you want us to move slower? Elizabeth already presented those without you. You need to focus your motion. Do the work, close the case, move on." Sighs removing his glasses due to disappointment. "You have a lot of potential Barry. You shouldn't still be getting me coffee after all these years." 

Barry, "You're right. That's... That's true." Barry thought he was kidding but. Dr. Singh was serious. "Go get me coffee Barry. " 

"Two Sugars." 

"Oh. yeah." 

Lizzie meets Barry at the break room while he gets Dr. Singh's coffee. "Sorry Barry, I wasn't much of a help back there. You shouldn't be giving him coffee anymore. You're not his errand boy." handing him a bag off two PB and BRHC on a roll. 

Barry not facing her. While eating the sandwiches."Yeah Thanks, Like I said. I am the janitor of the Justice League and at the internship for christ sakes." 

Lizzie, "I was only helping you. I was there You got to remind yourself you're much more and why Bruce recommended you to work here. " 

Barry now making Dr. Singh some more coffee, "Being ahead of me every time isn't helping me now is it I wanted to go back to those cases." 

Lizzie, "Barry listen to me. No self doubt here. Alright." Lizzie communicates through her mind. "You are the fucking flash you got that. You hear me and you are the member of the Justice League. You saved many lives today."

Barry was still working on the Evidence at the lab. Patty and Albert are still teasing him. Lizzie defending Barry. "Guys cut it out." Barry defends himself, "You know what? I'm so happy you find this all so hilarious, but we are dealing with real people's lives, people's families. And I don't think you can grasp the gravity of that. So, why don't you leave me alone?" 

"Lizzie Fernandez ? Barry Allen?" Iris West, walking up to the four. 

Barry, "Iris West'' Barry is so glad to see her. Lizzie, Smiles. "Iris hi!" The two ladies hug each other. 

Barry, "You know our full names?" 

Iris, "Yes, If you didn't know Lizzie's my friend from school. We have been close since then." 

Albert faced Barry, "Aw, You didn't tell us you had a friend from school." Motioning himself and Patty not knowing Iris. 

Patty, "We actually didn't know that Barry have mutual friends with Lizzie. Wow. consider she's wayyy cooler than you." 

Barry, "Aha aha. Okay, Um. Bye you guys." Barry and Lizzie pull them off and tell Patty and Albert 

Lizzie waving, "Bye, guys." 

Barry, facing. "They're not really my friends. They're my work friends." 

Lizzie, "I wouldn't say that Patty and Albert are our friends at all. More like just coworkers."  With that Barry can agree. 

Iris, "Oh, I didn't know the both of you worked here. I feel like we have seen each other. Right like a few years ago the both of you are getting much closer." 

Lizzie, "Yes umm we didn't get much closer under we worked together outside of school." 

Barry, " No because, we haven't seen each other since college." Facing Iris.

Iris, "Maybe I was thinking about the both of you. I'm really glad I run into you guys." Facing both Lizzie and Barry. She asks Barry, "Your father's appeal is tomorrow right?" While the three are catching up a bit. Watching side by side each other. 

Barry was caught off guard , "Yeah, Sorry. How do you know about that?" 

Iris, "I'm covering it for the paper." Barry, "Oh," Barry is disappointed he felt that Iris just came up to him just so she can ask about his father. Iris then asks, "How is he holding up?" 

Barry, "Are you asking for the paper?"

Iris now in front of Barry. "No, I'm asking as a friend. I'm sure the public would like to know as well." 

Lizzie, "Iris... It really doesn't sound like you're asking as a friend." Iris is shocked she has never seen her disappointed in her. It was Lizzie right to defend Barry and to call Iris out. Though Lizzie felt that she doesn't have the right to speak for Barry and his father. 

Lizzie communicates with Barry through her mind, "You don't have to answer." 

Barry, " Well, my only comment is that my dad is innocent." 

Iris, "Right, I mean, no one would want to believe that their father killed their mother." 

Barry, "What do you mean, "believe"? My dad shouldn't be in jail. My mom should be alive, it's not about what I believe. It's about what the truth is." 

Iris, "Right. No, yes, that's. Oh, my god. That's what I meant." 

Barry "Right, Sorry, I have no official comment at this time." leaving both Lizzie and Iris together. Then Lizzie was about to follow Barry to check on him. She felt all of his emotions, disappointment, upset, anger. Iris stopped Lizzie a bit. "Liz I'm sorry. I-"

Lizzie, "You should be apologizing to Barry it seems like you're using Barry for your report. A real friend wouldn't write that paper." 

Lizzie checks up on Barry. On the phone, "Just thought you needed time alone before I call you... And I felt everything that was going on."

Barry, "Bruce sent me the footage while my dad was at the grocery store to pick... up some canned tomatoes." Barry started tearing up as he was watching the footage the first time "...He was... Not looking up." Lizzie could hear him hurt so much. "-I should call go, I shouldn't be bothering you..." 

Lizzie, "Just because we work together doesn't mean you aren't my friend." 

Celestia Lizzie's Mother magically appeared to her Apartment. "Ma, Please. You can not just come here unannounced. I thought you were working a night shift?" Celestia is a head nurse in California. Though Celestia is in her goddess attire. 

"Can't I check up on my only daughter?" She is snooping around curious Seeing pictures of Barry, Iris, and her other friends. Even sees some of Wayne Enterprises tech here and there. 

She cuts to the chase why she really comes here. "You awfully spend time with Bruce Wayne. Is he what you call your sugar daddy? Are you having sex with that man?" 

Lizzie, places a hand over her chest "MA! No, I am not having any sort of relationship with a 50 year old man! Where is this all coming from?" Lizzie always saw him as a mentor. 

"Or this Barry Allen? You spending so much time with him you go to his apartment." 

"MA HINDI. NAMAN (Ma no, I am not), Can you please stop. They are my friends. Wait you watch over me, You scryed wherever I'm at? Ma all I ask is for some privacy." 

Celeistia never answers but scrying is like finding your location in magic. "But this Barry, I have this feeling you have a crush on him." Celestia teases her daughter. Lizzie doesn't want her to push it."-The boy likes this kpop, and is a superhero like you. What's not to like about him. Really, Elizabeth Anak (My child) What's not to like?" Lizzie face palms. The world is seriously so fucked up that every time I even attempt to write something about Iran, I feel embarrassed. Like I wanna write about how Iranians are protesting when just kilometers away, in Afghanistan, girls aren’t allowed to go to school. When they’re getting raped and murdered by ISIS. I wanna write but then I remeber that Afghans are literally dying of hunger, when I remember that Syria is under fire, when I remember that Russia is still attacking Ukraine, when I remember that Palestinians are dying everyday and no one gives a shit.

But you know what? You know what’s really fucking interesting? The fact that all these events have something in common. And no it’s not the US (not saying they’re not involved or anything) and no it’s not Britain; it’s the fucking IRI.

The Islamic government of Iran has, for decades, been fucking things up in the middle east. And sure they have help from the US and Russia because what they’re doing benefits everybody at the top. They fuck up and all those big guys get a piece of the pie.

They have been funding ISIS and Taliban and at the same time sending troops to Syria and Palestine “to help end terrorism”.

They are killing their own people, supporting Putin and Russia and meddling in the politics of every country in the Middle East.

IRI isn’t just a problem for Iranians. Countries and their politics affect eachother. There is no fucked up nation that is not also ruining the lives of people in other countries. IRI is a problem for the entire world and with their demise so many other problems will also probably die down or become a lot less severe.

The big powers in the world don’t want Iran to be rid of this regime, it’s not good for them. Financially or in any other way. News will get warped, there will be no reports, there will be no help, they will keep on selling them weapons and ammo.

If you’re wondering about the Middle East and why there’s always something bad going on there, if you’re so used to hearing about Middle Easterns dying or being at war, it’s because it’s good for so many people that this be the way things are there. It’s not the natural order of things. No it’s beneficial. It helps the economy of so many other countries and politicians, even those in the fucking Middle East.

No government is going to put an end to this. To anything that’s going on there. It would be stupid of them. It’s only people who can help.

Only people. Normal people who can see clearly that what is happening is not right. People who genuinely have empathy and care. And it’s by people being informed and knowing about things that are happening and demanding action from their governments and the UN, that things will change. And they will.

Things will change, and they will get better. We just all have to take part. Nothing happens if people don’t care.

SVSSS Monster Hunter AU

Monsters I want Shen Yuan/Qingre to have as familiars!! For how this is going to work, Shen Yuan is going to have a set limit on how many familiars he can take out and about based on the strength of his cultivation and the size/power of the monsters themselves. The reason for this is bc at some point his kinship stone broke which shattered the empathetic bond between him and his familiars, but he can rebuild it with a maximum of 3 monsters at once. He doesn't need the empathy bond on Wu Nian peak bc he has more time to understand what his familiars are trying to communicate, but outside the peak its more necessary for quick communication during battle.

For my own sake there will be three sizes of monsters: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd class monsters. 3rd class monsters are monsters that cannot be ridden, 2nd class monsters are monsters that one to three people can ride, and 1st class monster can be ridden by 4+ people.

My understanding of "riding" implies that the monster is not impeded by being ridden. Thus the entirety of the Wingdrakes are 3rd class monsters, and Shen Yuan can have three empathetically tied to him at once, and Paolumu and Tobi-Kadachi are 2nd class monsters so Shen Yuan can have two empathetically tied simultaneously, whereas Najarala or Beotodus are 1st class monsters so Shen Yuan can only have one empathetically tied to him.

Lets get started! first off: Paolumu! Shen Yuan's paolumu is named Mimi [糸糸], the character meaning fine silk repeated twice. Mimi is a 2nd class Flying Wyvern from the Coral Highlands in the New World, and one person can ride her. Mimi is 14m long, is weak to fire and thunder, and resists water.

next, Tobi-Kadachi! Shen Yuan's Tobi-Kadachi is named Dalei [打雷], meaning the sound of thunder. Dalei is a 2nd class Fanged Wyvern from the Shrine Ruins in the Old World, and two people can ride him. Dalei is 15m long, can attack with thunder, can inflict thunder-blight, is weak to water, and resists thunder.

Shen Yuan's Malfestio is named Wuyao [乌药], meaning crow/raven/black and leaf of the iris (flower). Wuyao is a 3rd class Bird Wyvern from the Jurassic Frontier of the Old World, and cannot be ridden. Wuyao is 3m long, can inflict confusion and sleep, and is weak to fire and water.

Shen Yuan's Glavenus is named Jianfa [剑法], meaning sword play. Jianfa is a 1st class Brute Wyvern from the Ingle Isle of the Old World, and 5 people can can ride her. Jianfa is 31m long, can attack with fire, can inflict fire-blight and bleed, is weak to dragon, water, and ice, resists thunder, and is immune to fire.

Shen Yuan's Seregios is named Cici [刺刺], the character meaning thorn/spike/to stab repeated twice. Cici is a 2nd class Flying Wyvern from Pondry Hills in the Old World, and is the oldest of Shen Yuan's companions. Only one person can ride Cici. Cici can inflict bleed, and is weak to thunder and ice.

Shen Yuan's Lagaicrus is named Houya [厚牙], meaning to favour ivory. Houya is a 2nd class Leviathan from Paupau Beach of the Old World, only one person can ride her. Houya can attack with thunder and water, can inflict thunder-blight and water-blight, and is weak to fire and dragon.

Shen Yuan's Midogaron is named Yaoban [耀斑], meaning solar flare. Yaoban is a 2nd class Fanged Beast from the Old Swamp of the Old World, only one person can ride her. Yaoban can attack with fire, can inflict stun, and is weak to water and ice.

Shen Yuan's Odogaron is named Juli [咀璃], meaning eating glass. Juli is a 2nd class Fanged Wyvern from the Rotten Vale of the New World, and can be ridden by two people. Juli can attack with dragon, can inflict dragon-blight and bleed, is weak to water, and resists dragon.

Shen Yuan's Beotodus is named Taxue [踏雪], which means to go for a walk in the snow. Taxue is a 1st class monster from the Hoarfrost Reach of the New World. He can carry six people. Taxue is 22m long, can attack with ice, can inflict ice-blight, is weak to thunder and fire, resists water, and is immune to dragon and ice.

Shen Yuan's Banbaro is named Tianma [甜马], meaning sweet horse. Tianma is a 1st class monster from the Hoarfrost Reach of the New World. She can carry eight people. Tianma is 29m long, can attack using fire, water, and ice (dependent on terrain), can inflict fire-blight, water-blight, and ice-blight (dependent on terrain), is weak to dragon and fire, resists thunder, and is immune to water and ice.

Shen Yuan's Najarala is named Fense [魵色], which means shrimp colours. Fense is a 1st class Snake Wyvern from the Everwood of the Old World. Fense is 52m long, can attack with water, can inflict water-blight and paralysis, and is weak to fire and thunder.

Finally, Shen Yuan's Nerscylla is named Shaoling [蛸绫], meaning silk spider. Shaoling is a 2nd class Temnoceran from the Trese Desert of the Old World, only one person can ride her. Shaoling is 11m long, can inflict paralysis, poison, and noxious poison, can bind things in her web, and is weak to ice and fire.

The Dragon Master and the Dragon Buster

Looking back on Best Wishes lately and just felt the urge to sing the praises of the rivalry between Iris and Georgia/Langley, because it does exactly what a good rivalry should do: develop both characters and push them further in their goals. They actually help each other.

Georgia first helps Iris when she shows up and provides her with an annoying opponent she really wants to defeat, only to fail due to Excadrill not listening to her, which is the push she needed to stop beating around the bush and directly delve into what Excadrill’s problem is.

Once Iris and Excadrill have sorted out their issues, Iris ends up helping Georgia by drawing with her in their rematch. Despite Georgia having told Iris to “be a bit stronger the next time we meet”, Georgia is so egotistical that she didn’t actually consider “a bit stronger” actually affecting the outcome of their rematch.  While she remains arrogant, she’s never this stupidly arrogant afterward, not taking it as a given that she’ll win and fighting more strategically. 

After Iris wins the Don Battle, Georgia stops seeing her as just some upstart in over her head and begins to treat her like a legitimate rival, showing her some respect and telling her that she wants her to become a Dragon Master because defeating her would be worth more then.

After Georgia displays in the Donamite that she can indeed “bust dragons” and has skill to back up her endless boasting, Iris begins taking her more seriously as a rival, motivated to defeat her for the sake of the challenge rather than just because she gets on her nerves.

Teaming up with Georgia’s Vanilluxe is what helps Iris overcome her fear of Ice-type Pokemon, which existed because she was so empathetic and in tune with Dragon-types and is now resolved as she extends her empathy toward Vanilluxe in spite of it being an Ice-type and one of her rival’s Pokemon, which is a great display of Best Wishes’ core theme as well.

Georgia is also helped by this event, as she had been seeking to somehow change her Vanilluxe’s friendly-toward-Dragon-types personality only to see that even with a Dragon trainer teamed with it, its power was brought out in full, and on top of that Iris thanking her (using Vanilluxe as a proxy) makes her reconsider how she views Dragon-types and trainers. Maybe she also realizes she’s falling in love with Iris, I certainly wouldn’t be surprised if so.

In the Junior Cup, Iris defeats Georgia in the first round...but through none of her own efforts, as her freshly caught Dragonite insists on fighting battles his way without any input from her. As far as he’s concerned, she’s a glorified Taxi service to take him to strong opponents. Georgia calls Iris out on how unbecoming of a Dragon Master this is, and Iris really takes these words to heart and tries to fix this in the next rounds, but to no avail...yet, anyway.

At the tournament’s end, we see that Georgia was also helped by the battle, since it made her realize that for all her efforts at making Beartic into a physical powerhouse, it didn’t mean much if its defenses were low while another Pokemon like Dragonite’s were high. As such, she playfully notes that she’s going to “start powering up from scratch”, just as she should.

Executive interference with the show’s final year sadly meant we were robbed of Georgia’s send-off episode, which I personally think would have revealed her to have a Dragon-type on her team now. Using a Dragon to bust Dragons; it just feels like the natural endpoint to her development and experiences with Iris. Thankfully, Journeys was able to save things, as it showed that Iris became both Opelucid Gym Leader and the Champion of the Unova League. And when she makes it to the Masters Eight and faces Cynthia, we see Georgia front and center at the Battle Club where the battle is being broadcast, and her face just says it all.

She’s so proud of Iris, proud that she gets to have someone like this as her rival, to have bragging rights that this girl was helped along on her path to greatness by her, and to be perpetually motivated to keep growing stronger in the hopes of someday defeating her...an achievement that would now be an even more satisfying one than it had ever been before.

Bubblegum Black Chapter 4 is now live!

So this is a far shorter chapter than Chapter 3, and honestly that might be a good thing. As is the fic is 31K words and the plot's barely started. Well, next chapter is another big STMPD-branded fight scene - that's why I waited a month to release this chapter, so I had time to finish the next one in a satisfactory manner.

But that's not to discount that what's going on in this chapter isn't important. Far from it. If anything, this is the chapter where a very crucial decision is made that is the contours along which much of the plot goes. Let's dig into it.

Recovery Zone 23: As tempting as it is to be coy and refuse to explain the joke... look, it's a Megazone 23 reference, Megazone being the anime that made AIC and Artmic the kings of the 80's OVA boom before Bubblegum Crisis and Gall Force. I did watch the last part of Megazone 23 Part III recently, and it was profoundly okay-ish. Megazone never manages to be as concise and snappy as BGC, and often feels like it's trying too much and never enough at once. Apparently, though, Megazone and not BGC is the franchise AIC wanted to remake and slap a part 4 on during their period of trying to Kickstart anime back in the 2010's. So maybe it's more popular in Japan, even 40 years out? Who knows.

The Vampire Serial Killer Thing: Yeah, for those of you who don't know Crisis, Sylvie's original role was a lesbian sexbot vampire serial killer, gathering blood to save the life of a sister Sexaroid, who befriended Priss and then died miserably at the end of OVA 5. It's a genuinely sad moment, especially because Sylvie's circumstances are so interesting, and the question of 'should we have empathy for this Boomer-girl-thing' is a question that has been discussed in the fandom ever since the episode's release on Christmas Day, 1988. So part of the reason I switched over to a 2060's AU for my work is so I could just keep her alive, force Sylvie to come to grips with who she is and could become. Pure, uncut copium, as Edgerunners fans might say. But I think I'm onto something when I say that Priss wouldn't be pissed about the killings - she's an ex-bosozoku in a cyberpunk cityscape, she's killed innocents before - but more that Sylvie lied to her, didn't trust Priss to help her. Celia, now, Celia would be the one who would treat Sylvie as subhuman in nature and actions. That's why Sylvie wants to meet Sawyer. Being an only-human-enough monster herself, she's more willing to see things in someone like the Gore Gore Girl than Priss. Also we get an intimate moment between them, so... yeah.

Inspector Cara: Oblique reference to the AD Police Files detective girl Iris Cara, who uncovered an unhinged cyberpsychotic serial killer in the only good episode of that trio, The Ripper. I actually ranked The Ripper pretty low on my big ranking sheet awhile back, but then again I hadn't really watched the whole episode properly, and was judging the episode more on the concept. Which is unfair, because... eh. I won't spoil it, but suffice to say that I wrote a paper for my last quarter of undergrad where I argued that The Ripper's cyberpsychotic arc and David Martinez's descent into madness are one and the same. If I ever get permission from my prof to post it, I will.

Monster Revolver: I haven't had the chance to show it off, but instead of a Stechkin, Balalaika now wields an Rsh-12 revolver, which fires a 12.7*55mm round, normally used for short-range engagements in battle rifles like the ShAK-12, getting the stopping power of Lapua Magnum without the range. Why is Balalaika wielding this thing? Because it's big and intimidating-looking, and I can see her using it, maybe even modifying it for sniping somehow. It's a menacing gun for a menacing woman.

Rock Okajima and Celia Stingray: So here's the thing. I wrote Celia very well. I don't doubt that. I know how to write Celia's particular drives very well. It's Rock I'm not certain I did right. Now, negativemidas on Reddit, one of the guys who's been very helpful with hashing out various plot beats I want to happen, said once that Rock is fundamentally a blank slate, added to the story after test audiences for Lagoon's original draft needed someone to relate to. And indeed, Rock is sort of the moralizer of the story for most of it, even if he grows a spine pretty fast and carves out a niche as a negotiator and logistics guy that guarantees his survival. So I guess I have some license to write Rock as fundamentally depressed after, you know, manga-original character Le Majeur died in his arms. Was that the right thing to do? I'm not gonna lie, I basically fridged her, killed her to affect Rock's emotional landscape and set him to a state not unlike where he was at the end of Roberta's Blood Trail, just because I wanted to use a jumping point closer to something like Apotheosis (which is, to my mind, the greatest Lagoon fanfic ever written) than where Rock is in the manga. There's an alternate version of this fic where Majeur sticks around, but what would that even look like? Where would that go? I don't fucking know. More importantly, with the release of the latest chapter of Lagoon in August of this year, I realized I had diverted seriously from Hiroe's vision of Rock. Rock in that chapter has embraced his role as a mastermind, as a savior of Roanapur, as someone who loves the city and is willing to work with Chang to get shit done. And that was a choice that baffled me, because Rock tried to 'save' the city before, in Roberta's Blood Trail, and uh, we all know how that turned out, didn't we? Okay, so he's chosen to throw his lot in with the power brokers of the city like Chang, but is that making anything better? How is this meaningfully different? I think that somewhere during Hiroe's hiatus, he seemed to decide that Roanapur was a Good Place, a place that could save the forgotten and shunned and give them purpose if they didn't get shot in the first week of their existence. Hell, apparently Balalaika said in one of the Urobuchi light novels or someplace similar that she felt that Rock had a future where she didn't. This does not make sense to me. I have my own headcanons about what Roanapur really is, but they run counter to Hiroe's work, now, it seems. I don't like being one of those fanfic authors who doesn't just disregards canon, but actively scorns it. I told a different story for BGC because BGC is a different beast, one that's pliable and loose enough in its worldbuilding that anything can happen. But now the story I want to tell in Roanapur is one that is a 'fuck canon we ball' story. A story where Rock slips back into his old habits and, uh, spoiler alert, it doesn't end well for him. That is the story that makes sense to me.

So I guess if I have to tell a different story... well, so be fucking it.

CATCHING MY DEATH, AND I COULDN’T BE SURE

Sarah Triste was born to kind, doting parents; a family that loved and wanted her to succeed at her own pace. She did well in school, she didn’t have trouble making friends, money was never an issue in her life, and yet... she was sad. As far back as her memories went, she was just sad, even as a toddler on the playground followed around by this dark cloud of emotion. For awhile, she didn’t understand it. She just knew that people were struggling all of the time and she could feel it --- the loneliness, the stress, the brokenness they all felt. It built and it built until it was so heavy she found herself collapsing underneath it, and there was nothing anyone could do. The sadder she became, the sadder those that loved her were. It was a never-ending cycle she couldn’t help but feed into until it was impossible to tell if she was sad at all or simply numb. Waking up in Evermore shortly after graduation she missed her parents, her childhood home and her puppy, but she had been hurting for so long... it didn’t feel all that different. No one seemed to have answers, and everyone seemed to want them. She wasn’t sure what she was meant to do now, so she cried it out, got a job at the library and researches all of the town history she can in her spare time. She doesn’t think she’ll be the one to find an answer, but the lore takes her mind off of her emotions. The library is the perfect place for her to be, a place where people are so caught up in thinking and studying that their feelings aren’t as strong. A place where she can just breathe. Sarah is hopeful that one day someone will figure out how to break the curse that holds them in place so she can get back to her family, but even when they do... she can’t say she’ll be happy about it.

last post has me thinking abt iris and drayden gameverse…. for that pokemon sandbox verse in my head i never touch i wanna make iris draydens adoptive grandchild i think. like in the anime she has no confirmed family, which is odd for the show bc every other protag has at least one confirmed family member that we can infer helped look after them in some way. (even sun and moon went out of its way to establish that every one of the protags had parents) so while i think in that verse she was raised by her village, she has no biological connections. gonna say that since the dragon village is anime only that iris has a similar backstory to N, she couldnt hear pokemon but she had no family really and drayden basically took her in and taught her how to hone her dragon empathy powers since hes a dragon user. basically like paralleling N since she basically was taken in by someone who genuinely cared about letting her have a real childhood and life while still being a teacher for her after she was left to fend for herself, while N was a means to an end only for ghetsis and he basically ruined his innocence

1) “Mark,” Caleb grits. “Fucking let me go. Please.” It’s still burning in his chest, this combination of pushing determination into Frank and Mark’s influence over his empathy. He’s crying again, the hot tears racing down his cheeks.

2) They both turn and run towards the house, bypassing it to take the path directly to the garage. Their bassist is exactly where Luke left him; his eyes squeezed shut, fingers in his ears, body curled in on itself.

3) They settle into the couch, Luke laying down with Julie nearly on top of him, her head resting on his chest. They’ve never been able to sleep as ghosts, but Luke doesn't mind staying with Julie all night. He watches her drift off, fingers loosening in his as she falls asleep. 👁️ EYE for Mor? Or Kane?

𝐎𝐂 𝐄𝐌𝐎𝐉𝐈 𝐀𝐒𝐊𝐒!

👁️ EYE - what colour are their eyes? do people notice their eyes? is there anything special about them (shows emotion easily, literally magical...)?

((Morozko has... striking eyes. I will not hesitate to say that I specifically paid attention to his eyes more than any other part of his design (next to his antlers, perhaps?). 

The first thing you’d notice are probably the crimson facial markings around them. They’re abstract in shape, and said markings glow on his face no matter the lighting, but they don’t glow exactly. There’s a kind of reflective sheen in the same way a cat’s eye does. 

Then there are his iris and pupils. Mor’s iris shape is... unusual. It’s a red diamond, though because of his height, it’s hard to notice that the actual shape (he’s always looking down). They also... are bright, unusually bright, but just like his markings, they don’t give off a proper glow.

Morozko’s eyes are, despite the vibrant color, cold. It is difficult to see empathy, joy, excitement in them, even when he is experiencing those emotions.

They may be the first and last things you will see in the dark, frozen forest.))

Kane is a God, much like Morozko. And just like Mor, his eyes are a bright red, and hair a pale white. There are differences between the two of them-- Kane is a younger God for one. 

His eyes still have that sheen, reflective almost, but his pupils are white, irises a red brimming with the power he possesses. If he moves too quickly, a glow is left behind in the air, like they mark the space they left behind. When looking at him, it is clear that he can wield magic like the Gods of Old. 

Despite their ethereal appearance, the emotions they seldom express are familiar. Though they are usually bored, amusement and excitement are still recognizable despite his inhumanness as a deity...))

like you have to understand. ed is the normal human wife. hes lois lane. iris west. linda park. hes the grounded foil to bart's elevated intensity. This is important in flash comics because of how their powers work: they become so disconnected from reality that staying is more difficult than leaving, and the only remedy for this is a lightning rod-- i.e. a connection and intimacy with a person who isnt connected to the speedforce, thus making them, by definition, the speedsters anchor to reality. if this person isnt in the speedforce, then the speedster sure as fuck cant leave-- at least, not without leaving this person, too. flash comics have a long history with characters like this-- joan garrick is the classic, quintessential The Girl You Leave Behind To Go Fight In The War. jay was probably petting polaroids of her in the literal trenches. iris west is the 70s career woman-- she works and shes good at it and thats what she does. shes independent, but chooses to settle down of her own volition (shocking). linda park is very 90s comics, rocking the boat. for one, she isnt white, for two, shes the breadwinner. wally consistently gets himself into shit in his real life and linda is consistently the one dragging him out of it. they have this very intense back-and-forth at first, where wallys chauvinistic tendencies grind RIGHT up linda's second-wave feminism. but despite all this, these characters all get subsumed into the wider Speedster's Wife trope. like all things, a good writer wont mishandle the sheer breadth of possibility with any of them, but a bad writer most certainly will. and generally, they dont really exist outside of flash solos unless linda is showing up to corral her kids at the end of the world during final crisis, or something

but the importance of this character cannot be understated. not only in the literal sense of the superpowers, but also in that the comics NEED a grounded foil to it all. superheroes are meant to be this power fantasy, yeah, but for the most part, the average comics reader has more in common with iris west than they do barry allen. while the flash is off running through space and time, linda is writing her thesis. good writers will understand that these characters are just as, if not more, important than the actual superhero themselves. its why every solo ever has the superhero having a thousand civvie friends, or, often in the case of older characters, a civvie spouse. so in hh, ed is waltzing not only into the position of lightning rod in a literal, in-universe way, thus dragging him into this insane subculture, hes also slotting himself into the metatext of this decades (decades) old trope. and MY intention for leaning into this, is the sheer possibility for subversion. i have 2 rules for ed as a love interest, ones that if I ever break, hh will be an actual failure of a project:

ed will always have a life, thoughts, and wants that exist outside of his position as love interest

ed can never, ever, ever become a superhero

the reason for the first one is obvious-- its a common pitfall of "love interests" as a literary device, particularly outside of romance as a genre. a character being presented as more of a prize than a person, something for the hero to attain and then own. its just not an accurate portrayal of how a relationship works, and i really intensely dislike it. also I like ed and i want to explore him and his psyche, its fun and enjoyable. but whats actually more important than either of those is that this is VITAL to portray him as grounded in reality. "love interests" who are a prize to be won dont feel real; they're larger than life, in the same way that mythological heroes themselves are. nobody is actually like that, and consequently theres very little room for empathy with that character. and that is NOT what the Speedster's Wife does. ed needs to be normal, but more than normal, he needs to be real. he needs to feel, as much as i can possibly make him, like a real college student.

bart exists as this larger than life figure-- literally. i liken him, frequently, to thespianism. not only about his powers, but literally, the base of his personality that I explore in hh. he wears masks and personas to divert and deceive and confuse. ed, as the closest thing it has to a second protagonist, needs to be honest and upfront and blunt. ed's scenes take place in mundanity: at work, at school, driving, doing chores, hanging out with friends, at parties. bart's scenes take place in fantasy: sci-fi superhero bases, on violent missions, in space, outside of reality. ed is the point of reference. hes the axis of familiarity. his presence makes the characters around him feel more real, too. his flaws play of their flaws and his strengths play off theirs.

ed can never become a superhero because it would completely uproot this. it would completely muddy my carefully laid arc about a kid thrown into a peer counselor/management position to a bunch of traumatized teens barely younger than him. yj as a show likes for its characters to be a million things-- saving the world as superheroes and as civilians. but i think theres a quiet strength in the civilian characters in worlds like the dcu; what does normal life look like in a world where aliens invade like every 2 weeks, sometimes the multiverse breaks and almost ends the world, and people with unimaginable power want to use that power to enact grand, public violence? how does that work? ultimately, the jla, and the team (and the titans and the outsiders and the suicide squad and young justice) are all just a very, very intense, very, very vocal minority in a world thats otherwise populated by people just like our own.

civilian characters have always been one of my absolute favorite parts of superhero comics. i think the intersections between the mundane and fantastical (can be) really encapsulated by a relationship between a superhero and a civilian, and especially when that civilian is given the room to have their own life that they explore on their own terms, and how the wild nature of the world they live in interacts with their attempts to pursue their own dreams and life. the civilian is important because without them, superheroes dont exist. its the backdrop to every comic book ever.

Anyway. I wrote all of this because i think it would be really good for hummingbird heartbeat's sequel to open with a scene where ed, having been bullied into getting a drivers license by his father, drives his dads car into a supervillain that bart's losing a fight to, mid-monologue
