Live reactions and ramblings about the the first four episodes of Hazbin Hotel

Warnings: SPOILERS!!! Incoherent, unfiltered thoughts, I wrote them as I was watching. Most of them are in chronological order, but not all

EPISODE 1:

The origin story of Hell is a cool take on the original tale of Adam and Eve and the animation style is very pretty too (also biblically accurate angels 👀)

Adam is just the ultimate douche, fucking great

NIFTY ZONING OUT WHILE SHE IS BEING FILMED, WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT-

Really interesting and fun that Alastor straight up REFUSES to be captured in digital media, distorting it and facing the other way during the commercial

EPISODE 2:

SIR PENTIOUS!!!!

Loved whenever Vox got real close to the screen, it looked like your TV was his face, adored that shit 👌Also the way his voice distorted whenever he was pissed

Alastor went missing around the same time as Lilith... I'm sure that is not going to be at all plot relevant..

STAYED GONE. Vox's part sung/spoken like a TV news anchor, Alastor breaking the fourth wall, the varieties of error screens Vox displayed, and THE BLACKOUT. THAT PART GAVE ME SERIOUS CHILLS Love you Alastor but you're scaring me a little

SIR PENTIOUS PLAYING ALONG WITH CHARLIE AND ACTUALLY ENJOYING HIMSELF AT THE HOTEL I'M SOBBING

"You like me. You actually like me!" 😭❤️

The voice messages Valentino sent were fucking vile, fuck him. I'm now rooting for Angel Dust more than ever before..

As Zestiel said, Alastor is unpredictable and his motivations are hard to read, I love how he is written in a way you geniunely can't guess his real motivations you go you sinister deer fellow

I know I ask this a lot but it's because I really like your Michael but can we hear More about him?

Youre "charlie likes horror movies and michael Does Not" has fixed my months long procrastination on how to deal with Michaels relationship with horror, so heres that:

Michael liked horror movies well enough when he was younger, but hated them as he got older. I don't think he hates horror as a genre; i actually think he would like the modern horror genre because a lot of it is focused on family tragedy, and he would find that relatable. (tho i think its funny because that subgenre was largely inspired by fnaf.)

He hates gore and body horror played for shock value, since hes lived a lot of those horrors himself, and it can trigger his ptsd. but i also think a more deeply rooted hate of those types of films comes from a lot of the villians being queer-coded, mentally ill, physically deformed, etc. which are all labels that apply to him and a lot of the people in his life. The heros are never as fucked up or as complicated as he is, or his friends are, or his father is

bit of a side tangent, but "queer, mentally ill, neurodivergent, etc villain vs queer, mentally ill, neurodivergent, etc hero" is like my favorite dynamic. Bill Cipher vs the Pines, Megatron vs Optimus (TFP specifically), William Afton vs Michael and/or Henry just to name a few

Though i think that Mike would really love the kinda cheesy childish horror. Jump scares, tacky halloween decorations, haunted houses, and zombies especially. The Haunted Mansion ride at Disney and The Nightmare Before Christmas? He LOVES that shit. He likes startling people and being startled. Its kind of a form of affection he locked away after the bite, but came back after getting Ev's forgiveness and learning he doesnt have to hate himself and never have fun for the rest of his life.

Hed probably have this really goofy high pitched screech followed by nervous, slightly crazed laughter whenever hes snuck up on/tickled from behind/jumpscared/generally not expecting something. He's got Henry, Charlie, Evan, and Jeremy constantly trying to get him to do the Goofy Screech. fun family vibes.

He likes messing with the weird cryptid hunters whenever they ask around town about him. like "hello are you aware of the utah purple man" "yeah man im pretty fucking aware of him"

So I went to see The Little Mermaid today and I loved it. Here’s a dissertation no one asked for

The cinematography was absolutely gorgeous, I saw people were complaining prior to the movie’s release that the lighting was too dark, it was perfect, a lot of films and tv do not know how to light people of color correctly and they hit it out of the park every single shot.

The singing was ON POINT. The live action films have tended to not cast real singers but every single song was on point, they were SANGIN

People have been absolutely disgusting towards Halle Bailey and they are about to cry harder because when I say she is The Ariel, I mean that. Not only was her singing like a crystal champagne flute, her acting was phenomenal. She was so ANIMATED, and got every single emotion and attribute of Ariel that was in the 1989 version and elevated it. She is elevation, hope, and curiosity and you can’t help but fall in love with her every time she was on screen. While I do love the actresses in other disney live actions, you can tell with their acting that they are acting like they put on the smile and the costume and go to set. Halle is Ariel, it would have been so easy for her to do a cutesy imitation for 2 hours and collect a check ( and I wouldn’t mind it one bit if she had did that get that bag sis) but Halle was in complete control of the character instead of drowning in it. There is no one else who could have played Ariel and she will go down in history for this performance.

I have to admit that the disney princes for the most part in the animated films with very few exceptions are the most milquetoast aspect of the story so I was fully expecting to kinda put Jonah to the side when the film started but he made me eat my words. He was excellent, he was such a breath of fresh air and gave Prince Eric such depth, he had me swooning and I was not prepared to swoon over Eric today.

I too had my doubts about Melissa McCarthy but just how good her singing was surprised me. She was so damn good and hit all the beats for Ursula with charm and humor. I’d like to see Melissa play more villains, she has the range.

I think the weakest part of the film was Javier Bardem. His acting was kinda all over the place, in some scenes he was perfect but in others he was phoning it in. That end scene though was his best scene and I did start crying and hugged my own father who I dragged to the movie with me.

The way twitter overhyped Vanessa is very telling. Jessica Alexander is gorgeous and had some great facial expressions but for the majority of her role she literally just a mouthpiece for Melissa McCarthy and Halle Bailey. I’m not sorry to say this but while stanning the villian is normal we all do it and she is great in her 2 and half minutes of screen time, but a lot of this is an attempt to decentralize the black lead in this film and that is rooted in racism. The fact that the actress has had to block multiple people who keep posting about her not to truly compliment her but to harm Halle says a lot about how even when the focus of a piece of media is a black woman there are always people willing to dismiss her in favor of championing whiteness. Jessica deserves her flowers but this behavior I see right now is not praise, it is erasure and neither Jessica nor Halle deserve that.

finally thoughts ( prepare for me to get sappy)

I saw this in a theater primarily filled with kids and parents and it was fun to hear kids’ reactions to certain scenes but there was one moment I need to talk about. While kids were laughing and screaming the whole time having fun, I looked over at one point and I saw a little black girl in the row across from mine just twirling to the music.

So often as black girls we are told to we are too fast, we need to be quiet, I remember seeing a post about Cardi B. and Offset’s children posing at the premiere of the little mermaid and how those two little girls needed to “ lose the attitude” when they were two little black girls in pretty gowns getting their picture taken.

To see a little black girl dance with abandon without having to humble herself or lose an attitude because she sees herself on screen, taking up space in this moment because she is safe to be herself made my prehistoric ass want to cry. You see this film wasn’t just a cash grab, or “ forced diversity”, this movie was for her, for all the little and not so little ones to unleash the wonder that is so often ripped from us before we have a chance to shape it.

Go see it and get a little bit of wonder for yourself.

When the villians are more sympathetic than the hero, you've failed. They should be at least equally sympathetic. For example: let's look at Spiderman. Despite me not liking Steve Ditko's Spiderman, I've seen Spiderman tv shows and movies and games. And you know what? I like the villians (I like Doctor Octopus, Mysterio and the rest), but Spiderman is a sympathetic character. His school life, his family life, he's relatable. So you can root for both him and enjoy the villians.

Not the case with batman. With possibly two main exceptions (Adam West's Batman and Batman: The Brave and The Bold), Batman puts me to sleep. His villians are compelling. Batman beats up the mentally ill for a living, and we call him a hero. What have Scarecrow, Riddler, Joker, Mr. Freeze, Two-Face and The Mad Hatter all have in common? Oh, yeah. Clear signs of mental illness!

And don't tell me batman can't fix this! Arkham could be replaced with a functional care facility, but batman doesn't want to fix it. I honestly think he gets some sick pleasure from beating up the mentally ill. I really do think that. And that's why I want batman dead. I would not trust him if he were a real person and I don't trust him as a fictional character.

PS: Also, Stan Lee gave marvel a better "voice" than DC. DC is boring and hard to want to read. Marvel feels fun, bombastic and exciting! DC just shot themselves in the foot repeatedly. Their characters back in the 50s and 60s mostly feel like cardboard cutouts to me. Not the case at marvel.

what are some of the things you like the most about naruto?

I like naruto for the same reasons I like les miserables.

1) it's a story where the solution is love and empathy. The villians are all rooted in the same cause, violence and pain from the war. At some point you just have to stop the killing and choose kindness. If you take that seriously it's an absolutely devastating and impossible and beautiful thing to do. To love another person is to see the face of God.

2) it's a ridiculous story where ridiculous things happen. There's a movie where naruto is sent to the "blood prison"; naruto has just the most unhinged attachment to sasuke and is out here throwing himself face down into the snow to beg for his life when the whole world wants him dead; madara eats a piece of hashirama, pukes it up, puts it in his open wound and grows a lil hashirama face on his titty; there are like at least 4 layers of puppetry going on in the plot; a beautiful lil twink hides in the grotesque puppet; sasuke's steadfast ambivalence towards sakura and so on; god, just everything about madara, hes so silly; i could go on and on. My sense of humor is that I am delighted by the absurd.

3) From here on, we differ from les mis. Naruto is so badly written due to either the authors lack of skill or due to the nature of long running Shonen anime, that there's this huge gap between what the story wants to be and what it is. Like full metal alchemist has an extremely similar thing about everyone teaming up against a big bad and forgiving despite the war crimes and I acknowledge its well written but I don't find it compelling. Naruto compells me to try to find logic in an inconsisten story. I have to pull together things that don't make sense and infuriate me. It makes me mad in a way thats fun :-]

4. The chakra and the way that the powers work is a fun magical framework to build on. There's enough there that you have rules but you can make things up to fill the gaps. It's way more structured than something like one piece where the powers people have are insane and you can't root them in a holisitic magical structure. So in that way, I love it for similar reasons to the fandom that shall not be named, which I also loved because ironically the point was that love and empathy concur all...

The suprisingly bad plot of Bomb Rush Cyberfunk

So I played this little fun Jet Set Radio clone (don't worry, it ties into the iceberg, so I wasnt technically procrastinating with video games-)

And the thing that stuck out besides the expected and fun is how the story was bad. In a surprising way - not as "oh I didnt expect it to suck so much!!!" But nah, what I mean is that it failed in a interesting way.

So what do I mean?

Well lets start with the whole setup "Oh yeah, you get your head chopper of and are actually just a random scrap metal robot controling a should-be lifeless body."

This is weird enough, but the fact that there is that much head switching and body stitching is just strange, you wouldnt really expect that from a skating game - hell it makes the casual light-bulb eye-switching from Naruto look tame in comparison.

Still, one could guess that its just a quirky thing (or more disturbingly that some of the developers gets off from it, like not the weirdest thing that exist) - just some funny detail to get attention and stand out.

But not, this thing actually is the crux of the whole "theme" and "charachter arc"

And its weird that this kind of game trys that, like if mario struggled with alcholism as a framing decice for generic platformer #64. Cause why do something that is overly ambitious and will fail?

Like this game sadly failed - the whole search for "roots" just felt kinda unatural and as if the people were living in a different world from you (like ok I get it the society literally is that much weirder, but I mean in a sense of just procecing information and emotions differently than a standard human would)

Just the fact that the charachters feel empty and you dont really connect with them or their relationships makes everything hollow - yet its weird that they tried at all - cause yeah in the end in Jet Set Radio, nobody gives a shit about that stuff, we just wanna ride the line with carefull cartoon charicatures.

Yet still the story decided to introduce plot twist, thematic foils, villians with pseudo-arcs, drama etc.

But somehow it doesnt get how at the same time it just doesnt work on a basic level - like after its revealed that not only that Faux guy killed Felix for a petty reason but also is about to kill all other Graffiti pals, its kinda irellevant that his "big secret" was "Oh your dad kept you out of trouble"

Yet the game plays that up as some final all revealing shocker, and even gives Faux a death mirroring Felix initial fall.

Also the whole arc of Felix is both weird and at the same time something that seems to be trying to say something - from starting as some random smart hair-dryer, to it being revealed that he secretly was a legendary skater with amnesia, and the whole "you are both now"-

I get kinda that they tried to say "look he died partly because of his arrogance and not letting others be close may sparked Faux's psychopathy", but still at the end it just doesnt click, you know what Im saying - the first thing after coming to life with no memory is "Oh I wanna paint the city, yeah why not and find my original head even if its not really mine" and then "Oh I guess I learned the power of friendship, even if we interacted minimally and in the end only the final thematic attack showed the use of bonds"

Like yeah, it showed literally moments how without other people he would be dead but still it was so subdued that its weird to do a whole story like that.

Especially a story as whacky as it - with a evil skater head taking over the police and brainwashing everyone to do his biding while becoming a giant centipede monster.

But the weirdest part is that it even had the whole meta-commentary about how yeah it IS a rip-off and one cant escape that, but like, we are totally something new too guys!

But guess the only really clever writting was the set up of that weirdo with angel wings actually having a absurd but believable reason for overhearing everything lol.

Yet other things just go nowhere - the sniper kinda disapears from the story, there are obvious times where you are just sent in circles for padding, etc.

And that last thing is kinda what leads me to my attempt to reverse engineer the story -

I would guess they started with the wacky desing of the main guy and someone though "but why do he be having that crazy head thou?"

And from that it sparked the idea, well he lost the head - and that connected with the whole "identity" thing especially when they had to think if they were making something creative or just puppetering the corpse of a dead, head-team less corpse of a faux legendary franchise (I dunno why I said faux, I like JSR, but I had to tie in the names)

The details came later, hence why DJ Cybers Mask is supposedly Felix's, even though it doesnt fit the latter - cause yeah the charachter designs werent made like that originally.

And thats why there is some weird padding and moments - cause of budget reasons some things had to be stretched, or maybe some things had to be used in a way to maximise what one has done and to not throw away some cool concepts, even if they clash.

Also, Im not knocking this associative way of coming up with storys, just speculating if thats how it all came together.

Still, the fact that the story isnt just "Yeah we are rebels and here are police, lets fight!" without any of the before mentioned window dressing is surprising.

And, being non-generic is a positive surprise, no matter the execution - so see, this "essay" wasnt shitting on this game afterall.

(also contrast for a simmilar story that is unsurprisingly bad - Gravity Rush - but I'll save that for another time, man I wish that games creative direction was done by someone else, cause the gameplay itself has moments of being more fun than a lot of things...)

Oh also the proof that this all relates back to the Soul Eater iceberg - see what I found (sadly not first, cause I googled and some redditor noticed 2 months ago, alas if I played this game way back I would have had this eternal glory, not shame😔):

Do you prefer sympathetic villains or villains that are just evil?

depends. Are we talking Doofinsmhirtz or Rick Sanchez? Megamind or Caesar (Fallout New Vegas)?

there is room for both, but i think overall, I like a good.. villian-villian. and it's ok and fun to like a villian for villian's sake because of that. It's ok for them to have a sympathetic backstory- and that should serve as to why you hate them now. (Dark Danny from Danny Phantom comes to mind)

not every hero needs to be redeemed, or have an arc, or even turn themselves around. Sometimes! They should just die! (The Diamonds from Steven Universe) It works, but so rarely is it done right

The point of an antagonist, I think, is that they make you want to root for the hero. You're not supposed to sympathize with Nathan- he's a jerk who wants to hurt Marinette for his own desires- and if this is how he treats a girl he loves, then who's to say how he'd treat others?

Richard wants to end the world because it's too hard to keep living. The Dominoes are willing to let others hurt because they value money more, and they're willing to hurt people to make sure they get it. Amber hates not being the center of attention SO MUCH that she will assist an actual terrorist to get what she wants and is not ashamed in the slightest.

I've heard you too have changed your way of thought. the people fear you know, do they normally cower at the sound of your name? ah don't fret, that makes two of us. the masses tend to despise the things they do not have the will to comprehend. the villian finds sympathy for you don't they, well I could have seen that from a mile away. you two are the oldest friends, you made a deal with them correct? to save your late love, they tried to hold their end of the bargain, really, but I fear you are cursed to forever be despondent. oh what a sad and miserable life without love. is that why you chase loneliness? for is it truly a life of sorrow if you yourself has chosen it? but don't become bitter from the pain. trust when I say I have seen wounds unfold a man, turning the gentlest spirits into seething beasts. please, keep seeking love, even if it seems you are forbidden from it. you are the master of your own fate, I see how tired you are. the scars never healed, they twist and wrap around your entire person. your eyes are dark and lifeless, rest. but keep fighting, not with the sword you have forsaken so long ago, but with your heart. I'll be rooting for you my friend.

HI HI I'M AWAKE AGAIN!! it's 2:36pm now!! I read the new Jin Oneshot and man Jin was a bitch like- immature??? He called the reader immature?? what the fuck, i get not liking someone back but you dont have to be so rude and cruel about rejecting her. Reader better stay with yoongi for good. I typically watch whatever I come across that interests me, or i'll go back and watch edits/amvs/fmvs that I love that are on youtube. But some content creaters I watch typically are PointCrow, Smallant, Purplecliffe, PM7, MANDJTV(a good bit of poketubers especially with the new game comeing out this year) but I do watch Markiplier and Jackcepticeye whenever one of their videos catches my eye (I watched them play the stanley parable ultradeluxe), though there is this fish biologist youtuber I watch called ANVJ! There's also DougDoug(whom makes great and funny content, i reccomend the ai creates my linkden in profile video very funny) I'll be sure to remember that, and I'd love to really talk about them as well especially when the new seasons release! Plus I wanna be able to talk about moments in the show with someone. Good choices! For all of us are dead my favorites have to be Cheongsan, Su-hyuk, Nam-ra, gyeon-su(i have one more but im not even sure if i should like him) From Sweet home it has to be Sang-wook, Hyun-su, eun-hyuk , I also love ji soo and ja heon. (i'm honestly so conflicted I wanna like gwi-nam from all of us are dead but he's done some really shitty things but my villain liking heart keeps saying to favorite him as well, I have a bit of a type of either liking the villains, the cold characters or the most innocent they didn't do anything characters yet something happened to them) edits are addicting i tell you, I need to finish/catch up on stranger things but I have so many things I wanna watch at the moment so it'll take me a while. HISTORYYYY??? I guessed based on the thumbnail on netflix, BUT I LOVE HISTORY- This should explain why i'm becoming a history teacher in the future (hopefully). I'm a bit of a history nerd at times. Goblin has been on my list for a while as well as tale of the nine tails. It doesnt help one of my favorite actors has a role in both of the series and the fact a member of one of my ult groups sings one of the OSTs for tale of the nine tailed. You're welcome!! (I admit what gets me interested are who plays in the series or the clips i see in compilations) I'm glad i get my sleep as well, as I really never feel tired when I go to sleep so it takes me a good bit to do so! Oooo! A history teacher?! That's fucking awesome!!! History was always one of my favourite subjects and I think it was because I had such a great teacher! He always made the classes fun (well as much as he could in a super strict and tight school) I wish you all the best in becoming a history teacher!

OST's for dramas are always soooo good! I loved "Here Always" that Seungmin did for Hometown Cha cha T-T It always makes me smile

Hot take but season 6 of Better Call Saul is just so exhausting to watch. Like, watching villainous characters get away with everything because the plot demands it feels so cheap, and when those “villians” happen to be the main characters who get the majority of the screentime, it stops being enjoyable at a certain point and starts being emotional torture porn

It was fun to watch everything early on but I just trudged through 7 episodes of Jimmy and Kim torturing Howard for fun without facing any consequences and it hurts to watch. Howard was the only character I was even able to root for anymore because Jimmy and Kim are actual sociopaths, and now it feels like I was wrong to have any hope for him at all because of course the main characters were going to get through this unharmed. Until the last ~3 episodes, of course they’re both going to be fine and of course anyone who stands in their way is going to end up dead (even if his death is caused by a complete coincidence right at the end of the arc since the writers probably didn’t know how else to get rid of his character lol)

I obviously recognize that this is a (mostly) very well written show and Kim especially is intended to be a morally complex character despite appearances, and I’m glad that other people are enjoying it. I just needed to vent about this because god I feel like I’m the only one who’s mostly felt annoyed rather than entertained while watching this season so far

Game Review: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles- Shredder's Revenge

For many of us who grew up in the 80s, there was many animated shows that we could never get enough of, one of them being Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Originally starting as a gritty, violent black and white comic created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, the series became immensely popular when it was adapted into a kids cartoon and debuted in 1987. The show’s popularity was enough to spawn various video game adaptations over the following years from Konami, the arcade games being the most notable and popular. Arguably the most successful of the games was the SNES version of Turtles in Time and since then, game developers have had difficulty replicating the same type of formula that made the arcade games so fun to play, the most egregious examples being Turtles in Time Reshelled, Out of the Shadows and Mutants in Manhattan, which was based on the current IDW comic series.

But now there is hope. After making a return to gaming in “Nickelodeon All Star Brawl”, the full team returns to top form in “Shredder’s Revenge”. Published by Dotemu and developed by Tribute Games (comprised of team members who had worked on “Scott Pilgrim vs The World The Game”), the game goes back to it’s arcade side scrolling roots and does it well, [opting to go for the retro 16 bit look, but animated very well. The game is not connected to any of the past games but the inspiration is clearly there, as there are small nods and easter eggs spread out throughout the game. There are even shoutouts to the first NES game; the overhead map resembles the original game’s overworld screens.

The game’s story is as simple as it can get; Shredder and Krang are creating havoc throughout the city and seem to be targeting the Statue of Liberty. (Apparently, they wanted to beat COBRA to the punch before they could bomb it) and once again, it’s up to the Turtles to take them down. However, unlike other games in the series you are no longer confined to using just the 4 turtles; this time you can also fight as April O’Neil, Master Splinter and Casey Jones (unlocked after beating the game once). Your choice of which character to play as affects your playstyle as each of the 6 have particular strengths and weaknesses to discover (Leo is the most rounded of the group while Mikey and April are freaking combo MACHINES) The game is split into Arcade and Story mode. Story mode plays out similar to the aforementioned Scott Pilgrim game- as you play and earn points you can level up and gain access to more moves, extra lives and super meter. Each character has 3 different types of super moved to use that can clear a crowd in a hurry and can be built up either by kicking a whole lot of ass or by taunting, the latter which can be exploited a lot when there is no enemies to fight. There are also a variety of combo moves, anti airs, dive attacks and roll escapes to use in order to rack up combo strings, daring the most dexterous of gamers to outdo themselves. Arcade mode plays exactly like it sounds: You have all your moves opened up to you but you have limited continues to use.

The levels are mostly linear left to right beat em up style fights, with a couple of them auto scrolling vehicle based. Most of the game will take you to places from the cartoon series, from the opening level Channel 6 to the sewers and eventually, Dimension X and the Technodrome. You can also be assured that the Foot Clan will not make it easy on you; just like the games of old there are certain types of Foot Clan soldiers that will cause you to switch up strategies on the fly or overwhelm you with numbers. Throw in various types of Mousers, Triceritons, Rock Soldiers, Roadkill Rodneys and even Pizza Monsters while you’re at it. The bosses are no slouches either: while it’s a foregone conclusion you will have to deal with Rocksteady and Bebop, did you think that you would also be dealing with, of all villians, TEMPESTRA?

Better question: does anyone remember her? (Most likely you don’t. Look up the episode “Leonardo vs. Tempestra”) It also helps that not only is there voice acting, there is voice acting from the original voices of the Turtles themselves.

The game’s soundtrack is a banger as well; composed by Tee Lopes, there are tracks also from various other artists like Mike Patton, Jonny Atma and most notably, Ghostface Killah and Raekwon which has to be heard to be believed. (Really, it sounds like a Shredder vs TMNT Rap Battle) The game also features local and online play for up to 6 players (at the time of this review there is an issue with the PS4 edition that limits it to 4)

If there’s any gripe I have about the game, it’s the length and lack of post game content. The only real challenge after the game is finished is to try to do all of the achievements in Story Mode (good luck trying to not get hit on stage 16…) or to beat the game on higher difficulty modes. But the game plays well enough to warrant repeated game sessions, especially with friends (or strangers) and that’s what’s most important in a game like Shredder’s Revenge. The game is a back to basics brawler that reminds many game veterans what made the previous older games fun why introducing a new generation to a play style that they can really enjoy. If you want a game to play that is awesome both solo or with friends, Shredder’s Revenge is a optimal choice.
