Finding Each Other-Chapter 4

Fandom: Superman, Batman, Shazam, and Wonder Woman

Characters: Bruce Wayne, Clark Kent, Lois Lane, Dick Grayson, Diana Prince, Billy Batson, Jason Todd, Tim Drake, Kara Zor El, Damian Wayne, Cassandra Cain, Alfred Pennyworth, Lex Luthor, Jonathan Kent, Connor Kent

Summary: Clark Kent always knew he wanted a family. He just always thought it would be traditional like his parents. Little did he know that destiny had something different in store for him.

Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Chapter 3

As Clark woke up, he felt pressure on his arm and along his side. He opened his eyes and smiled. B was still cuddled in his arms on the balcony lying on the bench which somehow turned into a bed during their late-night fucking. Clark looked around and saw that the sun was out and shining brightly. He loved feeling the sun’s rays against his skin. He definitely needed it. It was the first time outside of battle that he ever felt sore but in a good way.

B was different from his previous partners. For starters, B was insatiable. He had the stamina of the Energizer Bunny. He kept going and going until Clark honestly lost count of the number of times they had sex after the tenth time. As insatiable as B was, he was a little surprised that B took off everything but his black t-shirt. When Clark tried to pull it off, B gave him a hesitant look which caused Clark to back off. Once he did that, B smirked and pounced on him. It was odd, but he did notice that B had several scars on his legs.

Maybe he has worse ones on his chest.

As Clark started caressing B’s leg, he smiled. B’s legs and arms were very muscular.

He must have a rigorous health regime to stay fit.

“Are you looking for round two?”

Clark looked down startled to see that B was smiling at him coyly.

Clark smiled while cuddling into B more and said, “I was just admiring is all. I am still recovering from our last round.”

B smirked and asked, “I tired out a big, strong, and handsome man like yourself? That I find hard to believe.”

Clark chuckled and said, “Believe it. I am sore in places that I didn’t know possible.”

B looked down and said, “Oh. Sorry about that. Sometimes, I can come across as too intense.”

Clark smiled softly while pushing B’s face up and gently caressing his cheek.

“I am sore, but in a good way. I have never been with anyone who could keep up with me like that before. It was very refreshing, and something I would love to explore again.”

B smiled coyly and said, “Ah, so you would like there to be a next time.”

Clark smirked and said, “Well, I did ask you on that date.”

B smiled as he leaned in to kiss Clark who leaned into the embrace. They stayed in each other’s arms until B leaned back and rested his head on Clark’s forehead.

B said, “I look forward to seeing where you take me.”

B leaned down to kiss Clark on the cheek and then started to get up.

“We should go downstairs and have breakfast.”

Clark looked up at B startled and asked, “Are you sure you want me to stay?”

B smiled and said, “Of course. Why wouldn’t I?”

Clark chuckled nervously while rubbing the back of his neck and said, “I didn’t want to create an awkward situation between you and your son if he is up.”

B chuckled while looking down at his watch and said, “You don’t have to worry about Dick. It is 8 am right now. Dick is normally not up until after 10 on the weekends.”

Clark breathed a sigh of relief. He thought that Dick was a cute and bright kid, but he didn’t want to have an awkward scene explaining why he was in the house in the same outfit as he was wearing last night.

The duo got dressed and headed out of the library. As they headed downstairs, Clark noticed B veered off to stop on the second floor. He followed B curiously until they went to the last room down the hall. Clark marveled at the room as they went inside. It was a huge bedroom. It had a king-size bed, an ensuite bathroom, several dressers, a computer, a TV, a gaming station, and a walk-in closet. As B headed for the walk-in closet, he said, “I just wanted to change into something more comfortable. If you like, you can borrow some of my stuff so you don’t want to walk around in your suit.”

Clark chuckled while rubbing the back of his neck and said, “I’m fine. I don’t want to be too much trouble.”

B smiled while coming out of the walk-in closet dressed in a fitted black tank top and grey sweatpants. Clark nearly drooled at how the whole look accentuated B’s muscles. B walked up to Clark with a blue t-shirt and black sweatpants.

“I have a spare you can use. It is really no problem.”

As B placed the items in Clark’s hand, Clark rubbed the back of his neck and said, “You really don’t have to do this. I will be fine in the…”

Clark’s eyes widened as he felt the fabric of the items. He looked down at the clothing in shock and began rubbing them more and said, “These are softer than even the sheep I used to help raise on the barn. Where did you get these?”

B looked up thoughtfully and said, “I would have to ask Alfred. A friend of his created a unique cotton polyester blend in his clothing for their shop in the UK.”

Clark kept rubbing the back of his hand against the fabric.

I have never felt anything this soft. This is so amazing!

Clark looked up sheepishly and asked, “Are you sure you're okay with me wearing this out?”

B chuckled and said, “I wouldn’t have offered if I didn’t mind parting with it.”

Clark smiled and said, “Thanks!”

Clark quickly put on his new outfit while B went into his walk-in closet again. As Clark finished getting dressed, B came out with a garment bag and placed Clark’s suit in it.

Clark smiled and said, “Thanks so much for this!”

B smiled and said, “You're welcome. Now let’s get something to eat. A certain someone left me particularly ravenous.”

Clark blushed as he followed B downstairs back to the kitchen. Clark was startled to see Alfred not only awake and dressed, but already placing down two plates with food already on the table.

As Clark and B sat at the table, B said, “Morning Alfred.”

“Morning young Sir. I take it you had a good evening given the smile on your face,” said Alfred as he headed to the table with cups and pitchers of orange juice, apple juice, and milk and a pot of tea.

B smirked while looking at Clark causing him to blush and said, “I had a really good time last night.”

Clark chuckled while looking down as Alfred came to the table with his own plate of food. After a couple of moments, Clark looked back up and noticed that on his plate were bacon, eggs, toast, sausage, and a stack of pancakes.

As Clark started to eat, he looked at Alfred thoughtfully and asked, “Do you guys normally have breakfast at this hour?”

Alfred smirked and said, “No, not on the weekends. However, I had a feeling you guys might be up. If you come around here long enough Master Clark, you will realize that I am aware of everything that happens in this household.” Alfred turned to Bruce with a raised eyebrow, and said, “And I mean everything.”

B paused eating to give Alfred the side eye while Clark nearly choked on the apple juice he was drinking.

Did he hear us last night? Crap! I hope I didn’t leave a bad impression.

B went back to slowly eating his food and said, “I hope we didn’t disturb you last night, Alfred.”

Alfred looked up at Bruce with a raised eyebrow and said, “I did get an unexpected surprise when I went to the library to return the book I was reading this morning. One might remember to want to close the balcony door next time.”

Clark nearly spit up his food. B looked over at Alfred sheepishly.

As Alfred went to take a sip of tea, he said, “I just hope that the young Sir would let you stay in one of the guest rooms next time. While the balcony has an amazing view, it does get chilly out there at night.”

B chuckled sheepishly and said, “You never hold back your punches, Alfred.”

Alfred smirked while drinking more tea and said, “No, not at all.”

Clark looked at Alfred mortified and sputtered, “I…am…so…sorry. I…know what…it….must…have…looked…..like…”

Thoughts on Zack Snyder’s Justice League

If the original JL was a 3/10, this one is closer to a 6/10. It's definitely an improvement given the fact that it has twice the running time to flesh out various characters and scenes. Unfortunately, this movie still doesn't make me excited to see more of the Snyderverse, and I'm kind of glad that DC is starting to go in a different direction with their cinematic stuff. Some additional thoughts below:

The Good

There are some really gorgeous shots in this movie when the slo-mo is aptly used. A standout scene for me is the football match in the falling snow; from a visual perspective it looked fantastic.

Cyborg got a lot more backstory compared to the original JL, and so did the Flash and Aquaman to a lesser extent. This time around I was more interested in Cyborg, so the additional time taken to develop his character paid off well.

Overall, the plot is also a lot more cohesive. For the most part, I understood why the characters acted in certain ways, and the story flowed better from scene to scene.

Despite the fact that this movie is 4+ hours long, it didn't feel like a drag. I think breaking it up into chapters was a smart decision, and the pacing was fine.

Steppenwolf looks much better in Snyder's version. I really like the way they animated his armour.

There are some neat fight scenes, and all the characters got their chance to shine at least once.

The Bad

The slo-mo in this movie is like 300 on crack. It's so excessive that even the moments that really benefit from this effect became less special because you see it so often.

I particularly disliked the scene where the Flash saved the girl from the car accident. It felt like a worse version of the Quicksilver scenes, and him brushing back the girl's hair instead of just saving her right away is kind of creepy.

I also did not understand why Wonder Woman used her gauntlets to blow out part of that building instead of just incapacitating the guy with the gun. She's obviously fast enough to do it, and she didn't have to put anyone else outside the building in danger of falling debris or give the impression that a bomb went off. Just felt incredibly out of character.

There is no reason for the Martian Manhunter to be in this movie. The fact that the discussion between Martha and Lois was actually a discussion between MM and Lois really cheapened that entire scene for me. Martha and Lois have barely anything to do in this movie, why didn't Snyder let the real Martha have a heart to heart with Lois about the death of someone that they both loved dearly? Instead, he turned it into a cheap cameo that ruined the emotional impact between the two characters

Although new characters like Cyborg had some additional screen time to flesh out their backstories, we should have gotten more. For example, they brought up the huge revelation of Cyborg having control over all the nukes in the world, but then completely glossed over how that works. Does he need to be in proximity to the nukes? Can he "accidentally" fire off the nukes if he has a nightmare or something? Does he even have nightmares anymore? Cyborg deserves to have his own solo film instead of just being thrown into JL.

Overall, the palette of this film is quite dark and dreary. The most obvious is when you compare Mera's hair to how it looks in Aquaman. Even the scene of Clark standing in the field with the sun shining down felt less vibrant than it should have been because of the muted colours.

I'm okay with the whole "motherboxes were sleeping until Superman died" thing, but Darkseid just...forgot where he left the motherboxes and anti-life equation?? What???

The Ugly

Although this cut was better overall, the major failing of JL (and the DCEU in general) is still very clear. They rushed to get their Avengers equivalent ensemble film but forgot to establish the building blocks first. This movie basically introduced Aquaman, Flash, Cyborg, and the Martian Manhunter. That's four new superheroes in a film already dealing with the return of Superman plotline. Even with the extended running time, this is a terrible idea that does not translate well to a movie franchise, even if it might work in the comic format. (I honestly forgot that the Aquaman solo movie came after JL. The order in which they released these DC films is all over the place.)

To be honest, I still think that it was a bad idea to give Snyder Superman. All the characters in these films keep talking about him as a beacon of hope and a source of inspiration, but I never really felt it. Snyder's Superman is hyper-focused on Lois Lane, but doesn't seem to care much about humanity in general. I'm wracking my brain but I can't remember any instances of genuine joy or compassion from this version of the character. I just don't think that Snyder is capable of writing a good Superman story without turning him evil or killing him. (I'm still salty that Snyder had the Kents suggest to Clark that maybe he should hide his powers instead of using them to help people, and that Clark watched his dad die in the hurricane instead of saving him. I much prefer the comics where Jonathan Kent died due to a heart attack, since that was a perfect way of humanizing Superman. No matter how powerful he is, when it came to the unexpected death of his father in this manner, he was just as vulnerable and helpless as the rest of us.) I guess I have a soft spot for the boy scout characters, and Marvel did a much better job at bringing Steve Rogers to life while keeping him true to his character. Somehow they made me care more about Captain America than Superman in the cinematic universe, even though Superman is probably my favourite superhero. I honestly think a lot of the fault lies with Snyder's portrayal of the character on the big screen.

It looks like Snyder's original plan is to build towards something like Injustice (which doesn't surprise me at all). However, because his Superman is already toeing the edge of darkness, I don't think it will have nearly as much impact/contrast if he does turn evil.

Final Thoughts

This new cut of Justice League is worth watching if you are 1) a fan of the characters, 2) a fan of the genre, and 3) a fan of Snyder's directorial style. If you don't fit into any of the categories above, you can skip this and spend four hours watching something else instead.

Maybe the biggest issue for me is that he never got me invested in his version of the characters. I waited for years to see Superman and Batman together on the big screen. World's Finest are some of my favourite comics to read. What I got instead was the absolute dumpster fire that was BvS, where Bruce acted like a murderous psychopath, Clark was emotionally detached from the world, and their fight was resolved because "Martha". While it's true that his cut of JL is better than BvS, it still wasn't enough to redeem the DCEU IMO.

To leave things on a more positive note, if you're as tired of the evil Superman/dead Superman/brooding Superman storylines as I am, might I recommend Jeff Loveness' works? He's one of my favourite Superman writers, and when I read his stuff I always get that injection of hope that Superman is meant to inspire. Two of my favourites are "Help" (where Lex Luthor is assisted by a regular civilian when his car breaks down), and "Glasses" (where we see Superman through Lois Lane's eyes). You can also find the scans of these stories on Tumblr if you look around.

My favourite line about Superman from Loveness' comics is, "He could be anyone...and he chooses to be kind."

I wish that we saw more of this Superman in the DCEU, because we could all use a little more kindness in our lives these days.

Alfred watched as his young ward threw his head back and laughed. It felt like there was a weight slowly lifting from his shoulders.

About a month ago, Alfred and Bruce had been passing through Smallville when their vehicle had broken down and they had been helped by the Kents. The young master and little Clark Kent had started out on the wrong foot but had quickly grown fond of each other

Now a month later, Alfred was sitting on the porch with Jonathan as they watched their boys laugh and play, seemingly as radiant as the sun shining down on them.

“Seems to be workin’ out,” said Jonathan, nodding toward the boys

“Yes,” said Alfred, “I do have to agree,”

Just then, Clark bodily tackled Bruce into the muddy ground. Jonathan was started to get up, but Alfred stopped him.

“Don’t worry my friend, Master Bruce can handle an alien child,”

Jonathan’s head snapped to him so fast, Alfred thought he would get whiplash.

Ah, the sweet feeling of knowing everything, it never got old.

Out in the mud and grass, Bruce reached up and flipped Clark over.

That’s my boy.

“You won’t tell?” asked Jonathan

“Never,” murmured Alfred

Finding Each Other-Chapter 5

Fandom: Superman, Batman, Shazam, and Wonder Woman

Summary: Clark Kent always knew he wanted a family. He just always thought it would be traditional like his parents. Little did he know that destiny had something different in store for him.

Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Chapter 3, Chapter 4

Once Clark got to his apartment, he quickly put away his clothes, changed into gym shoes, grabbed his keys, and headed to his car. As he merged onto the road towards the airport, he got a phone call. He pressed the answer call button on his steering wheel.

Clark said, “Hello.”

“Hey, Smallville. How is everything going?”

Clark smiled and said, “Everything is great, Lois. How are you doing? Did the electric blanket I got help?”

Lois chuckled and said, “My night went smoothly. I think the electric blanket may have been the best gift ever. Kept me warm, cozy, and pain-free all night.”

“That’s good. I’m glad that it helped.”

“Speaking of help, I really do appreciate covering the event for me last night. I hope that it wasn’t a wild goose chase for you.”

Clark chuckled and said, “Well, Wayne remains unseen, but that didn’t stop me from having a fantastic time at the museum though.”

Lois said coyly, “That is very high praise especially since this was supposed to be a work thing. Did you finally find someone that meets your fancy?”

Clark smiled softly and said, “Maybe….”

Lois squealed and said, “I can’t believe this! You finally met someone. I was scared for a moment that you were going to let your past relationship with Lex derail you for a minute.”

Clark sighed, “Funny you should mention him. Lex was also there looking to start trouble.”

Lois sighed and said, “Of course, the bald imp would crawl out of his lair and cause chaos. What did he do this time?”

“Well, he tried to make me feel guilty about my job and that it was pathetic that I was covering the museum exhibit.”

Lois scoffed and said, “I hope you told that asshole he could stick it where the sun doesn’t shine.”

Clark chuckled nervously and said, “Well, I kind of told him that I was there with my fiancé and his kid and that I didn’t have time for him.”

Lois gasped and said, “You didn’t!”

Clark nodded and said, “Not one of my finer moments, but it did get him to shut up. I hate to admit this, but the look on his face made it worth it.”

Lois chuckled and said, “Look at you Clark being petty. I love it!”

Clark shook his head and said, “It still wasn’t right. I can only imagine what Ma would say.”

Lois cackled and said, “You’re Ma would have rubbed it in his face too. She hates Lex.”

Clark smirked and said, “Maybe so…”

Lois said, “Besides, it was a little fib. It is not like Lex caught you on it.”

Clark chuckled and said, “Actually, he did call me out on it.”

“How so?”

“After I left Lex standing there dumbfounded, I went off to watch the museum’s presentation. Once that was finished, I ended up meeting a guy named B and his son Dick. We walked around in each other’s company for a while talking about the Atlantis exhibit…”

Lois asked coyly, “Was B good looking though?”

Clark smirked and said, “Gorgeous, along with being very witty and good-natured.”

“Liking all the qualities. I take it that Lex saw what might have been brewing and tried to intervene.”

Clark chuckled and said, “No. Actually, Dick had gone to the bathroom. As he was coming back, he accidentally ran into Lex causing him to spill his drink all over himself. Lex got upset and was about to strike Dick until I intervene.”

Lois gasped and said, “I knew that Lex was terrible, but I didn’t think he would stoop that low.”

Clark shook his head and said, “Yeah, any hope that I had of him being a decent human being disappeared after that.”

“What happened after you stopped him?”

“Since, he saw me with Dick, he assumed that this was the fiancé’s kid I made up. He told me Dick or I needed to pay for his suit. When I told him he was being petty, he then went off saying that I would obviously choose a fiancé who was a cheapskate. At that point, B came in as dashing as ever and got Lex to back off by handing him his account’s business card. Whoever, the account was got Lex to shut up and just stare at us as we walked away.”

Lois said coyly, “So we have a guy that is smart, good-looking, and have allies that make Lex Luthor baffled. Your mystery man sounds amazing. I hope you didn’t let him out of your sight after that.”

Clark chuckled and said, “B and his son invited me to their house for dinner where we had sandwiches and chips.”

“Ohhhh. How did that go?”

Clark smiled and said, “It went very well. His adopted father lives with him and Dick. He is very charming and welcoming. Dick is very sweet and adorable. He is a huge Superman fan and has his own collection that he is building up.”

Lois cackled and said, “I would love to see the look on that kid’s face if he ever finds out you are the real deal.”

Clark chuckled and said, “I don’t think that Dick will be able to contain himself.”

Some awful scene splits it’s seams. He remembers. Like out from an ocean, he stirs. He’s in bed asleep, breathing hard. Is he dreaming?

Muttering wordlessly, eyes stutter open. Still swimming in some far’way sea. The ceiling stares back, and it says not a word to him… Then-

BERDIE

Awake, you’re finally awake. I worried you would sleep the day away.

ETHEREAL BAND BEING

He sits up. At the table nearby, At the little wooden table sits Berdie. Berdie reads the paper, then she sets it to the side With a smile and her head cocked so slight.

Berdie sees his face and she frowns - does she see? The ocean from his dream sweeping up, in, over him…

BERDIE

Did you have a nightmare again? Dr. Heller warned us that the new medicine might Make you foggy, give you strange, queer dreams. That you may become disoriented, fitful in your sleep.

ETHEREAL BAND BEING

He says he’s fine, he is fine, just a dream that - He tries to tell her but there’s no remembering. It was so clear, he was sure, he was in another place, So that now, being here - something’s wrong, so strange…

BERDIE

Only thing wrong is that you’re still in bed

ETHEREAL BAND BEING

She pulls him to stand by her side. Their hands holding tight, he feels their rings touching

“Our rings…” he thinks.

BERDIE

Keep up, Butch. Keep up.

ETHEREAL BAND BEING

Butch, he is Butch! And he laughs, Of course, now he remembers.

BERDIE

ETHEREAL BAND BEING

She smiles and he pulls on his clothes.

We got samosas and pierogis, Shue mai and raviolis, Empanadas and momo from Nepal. Kibbeh and boraki, Some greek Koulakli Manti - Try them all - we’ll take your pic for our wall!

Pump-N-Dump! Step inside. Heaven in a bite, steamed or fried. Pump-N-Dump! Paradise! Full service with a smile, stay a while!

Now the business was a dream Made up of oil, dough and steam. I was so pleased but knew something was amiss. Then one night you wandered in And our eyes met and that was it! Someone to share this paradise with!

Butch looks around and he walks and he thinks. He touches the counter and something seems wrong…

But he knows that Berdie’s watching so he smiles and he whistles And he gets behind the register.

He eats a couple dumplings and he listens to the customers, It all seems so familiar, but wrong…

BERDIE

You used to sit here a drink. Here, sit. Have a drink. This is the spot where we met, It’s perfect, don’t you think? Eat some more dumplings, my dumpling, my dear. Your blood sugar’s just a bit off

ETHEREAL BAND BEING

Butch eats lunch then returns to his register And now he’s feeling better. Berdie was right. The day moves on with a simple pull: The cars get gas. The people get full. Berdie’s in the kitchen but she always sees him looking. When she does, she shines a smile and he lights inside.

BERDIE

Look at you, look at you, Doing what you always do, Making everything right.

ETHEREAL BAND BEING

And Butch feels so heavenly, Opens his mouth to agree, But then just as he does…

CREATURES

BERDIE

Butch! Pack up, we must be going. Lock the drawer and come, my heart. Why are you looking so distressed, dear? No one comes here after dark. No one goes out when the sun sets, Just as it has always been. Hurry, hurry, let’s get home. I’ll hold you tight and lock us in.

Berdie’s waiting by the door - her Heart is jumping in her breast. Darkness looms outside the windows. All the customers have left. When oh when did all this happen? Butch’s head begins to spin. Berdie runs and grabs his hands And smiles forceful, kisses him-

BERDIE

Hurry Butch, I love you so.

CREATURES

BERDIE

Dammit Butch, It’s time to go.

ETHEREAL BAND BEING

Outside they’re outside, cracked asphalt and sky. A weight leaves his chest and he breathes for the first time. Back, he was back, eaten up by the ocean.

She walks far ahead, he runs fast to collect her. They scurry inside and she locks up the door. The windows are caged in, she shivers, avoids him.

Is this how she always seems?

BERDIE

Nothing’s wrong. Nothing’s wrong. It’s only- I forgot to eat. I’m such a silly thing. Why do you love me?

Come sit down, have a drink, Have your medicine, dear. Dr. Heller said to take them Til the migraines disappear.

ETHEREAL BAND BEING

And oh, Butch sits and wonders at things That flirt at the edge of his mind. And oh, Berdie, she’s holding his hand And suddenly everything’s fine. This is His life. His quiet life. His easy life. His simple life.

And Berdie looks at him and sings.

BERDIE

“Such potential…” Dream sings all the time. Seems essential, tells us what we like. Begs us from the ordinary, Swears we need to leave our Simple Life

ETHEREAL BAND BEING

The world blurs at the edges, And this is the only thing. Butch floats forward, at the door His hand, it reaches, trembling…

BERDIE

Stop!

ETHEREAL BAND BEING

And he looks into her eyes, And his head begins to hurt. But suddenly, it’s alright - The sun in up! It’s time for work!

Butch is smiling at his station, Trying to catch Berdie’s eye. Is she crying? No, she’s smiling Back at him. There’s nothing’s on his mind.

Days go by. Life is only dumplings And his simple, lovely life. And late at night, After Berdie falls asleep, That’s when can Butch can stop pretending, Out of bed and quiet on his feet.

And there it is again, That something at the door. It’s calling out to him. Several voices, something more.

Fuzz. It’s fuzz. Oh. Panglo. It’s. It’s all coming back. Like a. Like a dam. Brushee. Flosso. Damn it. Where am I! What is this? Who are you!

BERDIE

I’m sorry.

DANKENT

It’s all changed. The house is run down. Paint peeling Its. What the Hell is going on?

BERDIE

I’m sorry. I’ve tricked you with a glamor. The truth is I’m a ham-pire. And I’m surrounded at night by vicious were-hams that mean to do me in. For centuries since Ben Franklin brought the cursed pork loins of Ab-En-Nur back from the Nubian basement of Versailles to the US there have been two supernatural creatures at war. I – the ham-pire and they the were-hams. And they have killed all ham-pires but me. The only thing that keeps me safe is this gas station. The smell of gas keeps them at bay, but my supply has been running out.

DANKENT

The Pump N Dump.

BERDIE

Sadly it’s only an abandoned Sinclair Station long since closed. It’s gas slowly evaporating away. And those dumplings you ate were just rocks I found.

DANKENT

And not going out at night? Wait – I ate rocks?

BERDIE

Ham-pires can only go out during the day, if we go out at night we’d turn into moonlight. Were-hams are the opposite if they go out during the day they’ll turn to sunscreen.

DANKENT

Sunscreen?

BERDIE

SPF 35. But it’s not water resistant.

DANKENT

Oh. But how?

BERDIE

The chemicals make it – oh you mean about you. I found you, in a ditch, unconscious. Hurt. I healed you. I saw you and I thought… I’d been alone for so long. So I created a fantasy.

DANKENT

So all those … things I felt.

BERDIE

I can’t change feelings. What you felt. You felt. But. I can recreate the Pump N’ Dump. I can rebuild the world and we can stay in it.

DANKENT

I um…

HE WISHED HE COULD

ETHEREAL BAND BEING

He wished he could stay in her arms. He wished he could say that he never understood How people burst into song, But something about her Made him want to sing.

But in the end all he managed was:

BERDIE

I understand. Here.

ETHEREAL BAND BEING

Berdie goes to a drawer and she gets out a small ham hock made of pure cobalt.

BERDIE

Here it’s a small ham hock made of pure cobalt. It was forged by my grand-pire.

DANKENT

I’ll wear it. Proudly.

BERDIE

Good.

DANKENT

Now I just have to figure out how to get to New Molar.

BERDIE

New Molar? That’s easy. The express bus to Beloit stops across the way. Take that then transfer to the 165T direct to New Molar.

DANKENT

Oh. Great.

BERDIE

In the morning I’ll walk you to the stop.

ETHEREAL BAND BEING

And after a small breakfast of sunny-side up rocks they walked to the stop.

DANKENT

Listen if I survive this whole thing I’ll come back and I’ll. I’ll find a way to get you free of the were-hams and we’ll. Listen I … you’re OK kid.

BERDIE

Kid? I’m 235 years old.

DANKENT

You don’t look a day over 138.

BERDIE

Your bus is here.

DANKENT

Thanks for patching me up.

BERDIE

Safe travels, Butch.

DANKENT

My name’s ... thanks. See you soon.

HE WISHED HE COULD REPRISE

ETHEREAL BAND BEING

And he. And he. And he boards the bus. And he. And he. And he pays the fare. And he. And he. And he sits in the back. And he sits. And he hurts. And he watches her wishing he could stop everything and go back there.

He watches her. Getting smaller. As the bus pulls away. As the gas station retreats into a point, A point on a map. A dot on the map. It gets smaller. It gets smaller. And he watches. And he watches. And it all gets small. But when he thinks about her,

Berdie looms large.

Next stop: Beloit.
