By the Numbers update!!

With just over a day left to sign up as a creator for Fandom Trumps Hate 2023, here's a quick roundup of all of the numbers:

We have 705 offers by 527 creators (I've had to update this three times while writing this post!). Of those, 97 are offering to work in ANY fandom! The rest have signed up offering fanworks in 273 fandoms, including 177 write-in fandoms! (To compare that with roughly the same time last year, as we approached 24 hours left to sign up for FTH2022 we had 680 offers from 525 creators in 257 fandoms including 153 write-ins … meaning we have 23 more offers in 16 more fandoms by the same number of creators for 2023 … SO FAR.)

A look at the offers, broken down by type (with last year's numbers in italics for comparison purposes) -

Nearly 65% of creators are opting to let their bidders choose which org to support with their donation. The orgs most often chosen by those who wish to direct donations to a particular nonprofit remain the Transgender Legal and Education Defense Fund, any/all abortion fund, Rainbow Railroad, and the Navajo Water Project. The orgs selected least often are The Appeal, Razom, and Violence Policy Center.

In our listed fandoms Good Omens has increased its lead and its lock on the top spot. MCU caught up with Sherlock and Teen Wolf for a brief 3-way tie for 4th place behind HP and K-pop, but has since gained an additional signup to claim that spot, leaving Sherlock and Teen Wolf tied for fifth ahead of Star Wars, Stranger things, SVSSS, The Untamed, and The Sandman.

The Lost Tales of Cassandra Cain

With every comic book character there are stories that aren’t approved or slipped thru the cracks of being published. Here are the ones that involve Cass.

The Lost Batgirl Vol. 1 Story

- We’ll start with the most “finished” lost tale involving Cassandra Cain is one that was meant to be in her ongoing (probably #38 given the context of the story). has several official pages finished and inked. Not only that but the script was published online (it was written by Paul Storrie).

Here’s what we know the plot involves Charaxes (the post-Crisis Killer Moth Drury Walker who went by this particular name after the “Underworld Unleashed” event when he sold his soul to become a moth creature), him targeting a child who’s deaf, and is Cass’s only confrontation with Killer Moth (until Batgirls #9-12. I mean we sort of got that in Tec Knights, but Basil crashed Killer Moth’s plan in that, not Cass. Plus she wasn’t Batgirl then).

Not only does the story delve into the history between Batgirl/Killer Moth it also tackles Cass learning ASL. An angle not touched upon until Young Justice Targets #3 recently.

Several pages of the script by Storrie were drawn by artist Javier Saltares (Ghost Rider, G.I. Joe) and inked by Rob Leigh. It’s unknown how much of trhe story Saitares/Leigh drew and inked. What is known, is that in the early 2010s Saitares put a bunch of these pages up on eBay for auction. I personally bought a page but here are the ones I could find as well:

You’ve probably seen this story elsewhere too, because in 2010 artist Lynne Yoshii used the script and redrew the whole story. Lynn did an amazing job basically filling the portions that were missing: Here are a few:

The Missing Filler Detective Comics Issue

- Our next “lost” tale takes place probably around early 2009 and was meant to be a filler issue in Paul Dini’s Detective Comics run. This one was written by Chuck Dixon and would’ve tied into his Batman & the Outsiders run at the time. Not much is fully known of the story save it was announced by Dixon on the Word Balloon podcast (from December 2008).

For Cassandra, it would bridge the gap to Batman & the Outsiders Vol. 2 #2 of that series and her last prior appearance, Robin #162. Explaining Bruce's renewed trust in Cassandra, after you know-- the heel turn, getting injected with Slade juice, and-- a rather bad time for Cassandra Cain. 🙃🙃 🙃🙃

Six months later though, Dixon would leave Robin and Batman & the Outsiders. Now, this is where it relates to Tim/Stephanie. Robin #177 of Robin would have originally dealt with Cluemaster finding out she was alive (a lost tale in itself). This however, got a cover (and there’s probably art of that floating too if this much got thru) by then series artist Freddie Williams II:

Of course, you know the rest of the story. We instead got Batgirl Vol. 2 aka Batgirl: Redemption Road and Cassandra was given a set-up arc in B&O to establish "the Network" which would later become Batman Inc. Then get utterly forgotten when the series relaunched to just "the Outsiders".

It’s possible Dixon does have an outline to this saved. But given how crazy he’s become. I’m not one to ask him, but if anyone is brave. Be my guest.

The meeting we wanted but never got. - Robin #-183

- However this leads us into our next “lost tale” that would’ve been in Robin ongoing series. The writer who replaced Dixon, Fabian Nicieza, confirmed that had Robin lasted beyond #175-183 (the series’ final issue), he would’ve had Cass guest star and find out Stephanie Brown was alive.

But.. the series ended at #183 and Tim would become Red Robin. Cass would meet Stephanie, but it was extremely MEH reunion in Batman & the Outsiders Vol. 2 #13.

Now, if you want to see a fan version of this. Well, I wrote a script that artist Eileen Widjaja captured to perfection just this year:

Failed Pitches

White Canary series by Billy Tucci.

- Yes, there was an ongoing series by Tucci that would’ve starred Cass. For those who are unware of the identity. The White Canary was introduced at the main antagonist of the first arc of “Brightest Day” Gail Simone’s relaunched Birds of Prey #1:

After the arc ended rumors began to swirl that Cassandra Cain would be getting the identity and enter Tucci writing a spinoff series as well (covered by Bleeding Cool).

Cue Heroes Con 2010 and at a DC panel the question was asked with Senior Story Editor Ian Sattler and Billy Tucci himself attending the panel (sadly the Newsarama link I originally found is down but if someone can find it I’d be grateful). Here’s a clip of the quote though:

"They are also holding off on using Cassandra right now. Misfit will be seen later down the line. An audience member wanted to see more Cassandra, but Sattler insisted that they didn't want to rush her into the story and just want to time it right.”

Cue C2E2 2011 a year later. The prelude to Black Bat as it were. Tucci was a guest and I had to ask the question myself. He did confirm there was a series pitched.

He'd keep Cass basic, using her skills as a fighter and no real tech at all save the standard grapple gun, which is standard in all vigilante equipment. Why would she need gadgets? When SHE IS THE WEAPON.

And if you don’t believe me, here’s the commission I got from him at said convention of Cass:

So, accidentally given how many have asked him to draw Barbara, Tucci had screwed up the pose (hence why Cass is on her tip-toes as he was drawing Babs in the high-heels). He did course-correct the art.

Not just a day later, it was then announced that Gates of Gotham #1 would feature the return of Cassandra Cain. Though as we now know how it all played what happened.

So what really happened? My theory? A mixture of The New 52 and her becoming Black Bat more than likely scuttled the idea. Or DC being DC when it comes to Cassandra. We will never know the answer. At the very least, I can fully confirm that Billy Tucci was pitching a Cass ongoing at the time. Oh what could’ve been (or maybe not given Tucci has gone equally crazy like Dixon):

Angel of the Bat

- You know this one by heart at this point.

This was Gail Simone’s 2006 pitch after Batgirl Vol. 1 was about to end. We didn’t get that, and instead we got well... this for “Robin OYL”:

There are a few more story pitches that I know but haven’t dug deep enough or asked about the stories at conventions. Nor do I want to reopen old wounds as most of these ideas were prior or during the “New 52″ era.

Gail Simone had a few (but they more or less materialized into Future’s End: Batgirl #1). Kyle Higgins wanted Cass to appear in Nightwing during his run (instead all he could do was be allowed to put in a deleted fight scene he wanted to put in Gates of Gotham but instead used in the “Court of Owls” x-over). We all know Scott Snyder wanted to use Cass and was spited numerous times over during his Batman run.

Fabian Nicieza had a few ideas involving Cass that would’ve focused against Cricket (the villain he introduced in Red Robin #25), Bryan Q. Miller wanted Cass to be featured in the second half to Batgirl Vol. 3 if it had continued Cass would’ve appeared as both Black Bat and a time displaced version of herself as Batgirl (along with Barbara) teaming up with the Blackhawks and Skeets in World War II. We saw this idea teased at the end of Batgirl Vol. 3 #24:

Finally, there is Grant Morrison, who wanted to use Cass when Batman Inc Vol. 2 launched. It’s unknown what they had in mind but they and artist Chris Burnham did poke fun at DC replacing Steph with Babs in their second run:

Not only that but Mad Dog (Cass’s evil brother) did appear in this run as well. But that’s a story for another time...

Black Bat Ongoing (late-2012 or 2013)

- So we have an entry to this list that has recently come to light. Artist Dean Zachary has revealed that there was a Black Bat ongoing pitched during the “dark era” of when Cass was listed as “toxic” between 2011-2013.

Zachary has several concept sketches of this ongoing pitch posted of Cass, Shivasaurus, Batman, and Bronze Tiger.

So the first arc of this ongoing was going to be this, per Zachary himself:

“The drawing was meant to suggest that Cass defeated Shiva so badly that she took the villain's Mask as a trophy. The League of Assassins were taking the streets from law enforcement and only Cass and Ben could stand against them. Shiva sent her Prize Student, Richard Dragon, to either convert or remove Cass and Ben as defenders of Gotham. Mayhem ensued. Editors at DC had "other plans" for Cass and company at the time. ”

Course any Cass fan knows that “other plans” lingo of DC all too well. Now how was I able to pinpoint the exact time when this pitch was given? Well, with help from a good friend (and Lady Shiva expert). We can pin point this pitch was made in 2013 (or earlier).

The reason we can is because that’s when Ben Turner was walking around in his New 52 design in 2013:

The design would be used for an Red Hood & the Outlaws arc that would infamously tie with Shivasaurus getting K.O.ed by Jason Todd easily in it for that year.

So I find this story pitch fascinating for several reasons because there were some creative folk STILL actively trying to keep Cass canon at DC even with the New 52 going on (which said otherwise).

I find the whole concept of a Ben/Cass team truly some potential as the two were retconned to be master/student before Batgirl Vol. 1 ended. Which gave us this panel:

It’s also curious how this would’ve led into a villainous New 52 Richard Dragon which again did occur but in the Green Arrow comics under Jeff Lemire’s Green Arrow run:

Zachary still found a job elsewhere so there was no skin off his back for the pitch failing. But still expresses interest in a Cass solo.

- Another LOST Cass story slipped under my radar in July until today. Former series artist Rich Leonardi tweeted back in early July several unpublished drawings he did and two feature Cass in them.

Given the focus of the story is Nightwing it does feel like a continuation writer Devin Grayson at that time was using Cass to further her sibling bond with Dick (aka #81 of that series).

However, it could be a lost Batgirl story as Dylan Horrocks did leave much on the table (a lot of pent up tension between the two due to Babs/Dick breaking up around this run) when he exited the ongoing due to “War Games” event. Whatever the case, let’s just take in the glorious Leonardi Cass art:

Delinquent!Gudako Character Info

(Because I realized I haven’t really elaborated enough about her. Also I use Ritsuka and Gudako interchangeably but you get the gist it’s the same person)

She’s half Japanese/half Welsh. The Welsh part comes from her Father’s side of the family. Ritsuka never bothered learning Welsh before coming to Chaldea because the bad association with her absent deadbeat dad. But after some convincing, she picked up some of the language from the Knight of the Round Table (Mostly from Bedivere)

As for her mother, Ritsuka doesn’t remember much about her before she died. 1) because she was so young at the time. 2) because she almost doesn’t want to remember the only other person from family that loved her knowing she’s already gone.

Boxing is her preferred form of fighting, but the training she got from Scathach, Beowulf, and Leonidas made her more adept at Mixed Martial Arts.

Will NEVER admit that she has a massive inferiority complex about her magic circuits being kinda crappy compared to everyone else. It’s another big reason she trains as much as she does. Overcompensating for something beyond her control.

I think I mentioned before but, a massive reason why she’s so dense is because of her low self-worth. Aside from her Grandpa, there wasn’t anyone else that was willingly to give her the time of day either because they feared her or hated her. She didn’t have other people she could call friends and most people would avoid her. So the concept of anyone might be attracted to her is baffling.

That entire event in Shimousa involving Shuten really fucked with her head for a good two weeks. Waking up in the middle night, phantom pains on her abs, feeling like she’s about to vomit blood when she wasn’t. No one else aside from Musashi, Kotaru, and Dantes knew what had happened because she begged them not to speak of it. Eventually Nightingale and everyone found out about it after they pressed her for questions.

Ritsuka is still human in this AU. It’s just there are certain oddities about her that would make people second guess it. She can see in the dark without her eyes having to adjust, she’s alot more durable than most humans even before the training, and her inhuman appetite. Little things like that make you think something about her is…off

When I mean inhuman appetite, Ritsuka can eat about 2/3 of Barghest’s Valentines Day gift. ON. HER. OWN. Baffling to both Chaldea Kitchen Staff and Saberfaces alike.

A big part of why this version of Gudako is compatiable with so many servants isn’t just because she’s an average human. She’s an average human who had to learn how to empathize fast ever since Singularity F. She didn’t care about other people that wasn’t her Grandfather until she met Mash. So learning she was capable of even that small bit of empathy was new to her and something she had to work on.

Ritsuka use to hate maguses. Especially towards those that work at the Clock Tower. It’s only after she got to meet people like Olga, Romani, and Waver that had her think maybe all maguses aren’t completely awful people.

She learned Mandarin and Cantonese just she so could cuss out Yu Mei-Ren in her language. Same thing with Jalter and learning French because Ritsuka is that petty

Ritsuka actively tries to not cuss in front of child servants since she thinks it would set a bad example for them.

You can’t debate her with about G Gundam NOT being the best series because she will give you a 10 page paper on why you’re wrong.

She’s actually self-conscious about the scar on face. Not because of how it looks (although it doesn’t help), but because it’s a reminder of how powerless she was when it happened.

Closeted Love Live! School Idol Project fan. Liz and Osakabehime are the only other people that know about this.

If this Ritsuka was ever a servant, she would be either a Rider or a Berserker.

Gudako has a habit of repressing all of her trauma, anger, and anxieties because her everyone still needs her and dealing with it is a hassle. This will have consequences later…

Despite being a delinquent, Gudako still has a code of conduct thanks to Grandpa Fujimaru. Mostly her being against fighting the kids and the elderly even if they are servants.

Why do I feel like I gotta keep the various media creations I'm a fan of a secret, like...yeah, I like Knight Rider and The Owl House and Voltron: Legendary Defender and My Little Pony and How to Train Your Dragon and The Dragon Prince and The Inheritance Cycle, among other things. I have a question, who's your favorite artist? Sorry if it's kinda like a sudden question, is that i am genuinely curious about what artists inspire you, because your art is so lovely and awesome!

I've been having a great day, thanks! I'm glad that you think my art is lovely and awesome, even though I don't think it stands out too much compared to a lot of other lovely people on this site.

As for my favorite artist, that's a hard question. I have a lot of artists I like, even if we boil it down to just Tumblr or Twitter users, but I feel the most influential artists on my style that I can say are probably my favorite are two artists primarily known for SD Gundam works named Susumu Imaishi and Kouji Yokoi.

(More under the cut since this might be a bit long)

Susumu Imaishi does a lot of the little comics in SD Gundam and his Legend BB art was what primarily inspired me. Especially with his varied expressions in these comics.

Another major artist is Kouji Yokoi, who does a lot of Gundam-related art. He's also one of the main people working on the SD Gundam franchise and is the original creator. He's also done stuff for other mecha series, Godzilla, Kamen Rider, and Ultraman, but I mostly associate him with SD Gundam.

I'm not really going to post his other works, but I do want to mention that the mangaka Tamori Wataru's manga for the SD Gundam carddas booklets has also been an influence on me due to all the expressions he uses for the characters.

Side note, I'd also like to shoutout Knight Gundam Story manga artist Hoshino Ryuichi since he has had a bit of influence on my art style.

I'm also just gonna drop a few specific artists on Twitter I love who might have influenced me because of how much I like their work.

中西達郎 (Tatsuro Nakanishi) - Love a lot of their art. Also a published mangaka. Jumpscares me whenever they bookmark one of my pieces on Pixiv because they follow me there.

Crafty_121 - An absolute sweetheart, I love how soft her style is.

三輪士郎/Shirow Miwa - Does a lot of stuff for mobages and FGO, but you can tell they love it. They even did an SD Gundam piece that lives rent-free in my head.

八八二三 - I LIVE for their Gundam gijinkas they are SOOOO good.

氷水 (aka IceWater) - Partially biased since I was a contributor to two of their SD Gundam fanbooks, but I love their watercolor drawings a ton. Also, they once did a short animation TRADITIONALLY and I highly respect them for it.

あまきな (aka haguma_karasu)- Ok, so on my server, we have a sort of in-joke where someone yells "WAKE UP BABE NEW HAGUMA KARASU PIECE DROPPED!" whenever they post a new piece and it's like a massive event on the server. And that's for a good reason, their art goes H A R D.

麦茶 (aka yuuno0) - A sort of mini celebrity on my personal server due to being the first major SD Gundam artist to do FGO and SD Gundam crossover art. I've commed them before. :3

coconutsan1 - They don't post much anymore, but when they do, it's great. Also one of the few artists that does Saddrac Knight Saga fan art, which is like a rarity even in the JP SD Gundam fandom.

tabolow01 - There's something strangely wholesome to them, probably one of the most influential fan artists on my own style. I love their detailed SD Gundam guides and how they redraw memes taking them completely seriously.

Moyashi - I love their art because of how haunting it feels, even when it's a more optimistic piece.

Essential Avengers: West Coast Avengers #32: BURIED MONSTERS!

May, 1988

Hawkeye: “The reports said a monstrous creature was tearing up the area -- but who can see anything past these weird vines?!”

Wonder Man: “Uh -- GUYS!!”

Another very great cover in that attention grabbing ‘how did we get here?’ tradition!

Although, the speech bubbles do offer more context than you’d usually get from Superman killing his friends, or whatever.

The West Coast Avengers are tiny or they’re climbing a giant with flowing locks of hair, hair, long beautiful hair.

How’d we get here? We’d best read on.

But what has been going on with the West Coast Avengers lately?

I’ll start with the shortest thing first. Tony Stark Iron Man was short tempered, almost got into a fight with Moon Knight, refused to confide in Hawkeye, and then flew off. The team later received news that Iron Man had broken into the Vault prison, attacked the Guardsmen stationed there, and beat up the Captain America. So what’s bothering Tony is that he’s smack dab in the Armor Wars arc, where he goes around destroying stolen Stark tech.

The other, more difficult thing to sum up is this: when the West Coast Avengers were stuck in the past times, Mockingbird was kidnapped and drugged by Phantom Rider into believing she was his fiance. When she was broken out of the brainwashing, she pursued Phantom Rider to a cliffside. They fought, he fell off, and she didn’t make a move to save him.

Mockingbird hid from Hawkeye what happened to her and has been paranoid that someone would find out about manslaughtering the cowboy creep. Not helped when his ghost pops up in the modern day and makes it clear that he’s going to torment her over letting him die.

This subplot is really drawn out. For whatever reason, Steve Englehart is going to leave this book before resolving it.

Anyway. Is there a bright spot on the horizon? A reason to hope amidst all this bad?

Yes.

The Wasp is here!

I didn’t really used to care much about the Wasp. I didn’t hate her but I wasn’t a huge fan. But between Avengers Earth’s Mightiest Heroes the cartoon and the Shooter and Stern run where she becomes the leader of the team, she’s probably one of my favorite Avengers characters. If not the.

No shade on Hank but in contrast to him switching out identities and powers and trying to find something that worked, I think Wasp sticking with the Wasp name and powers (and changing her costume a fucktillion times, granted) really endears me to her. She’s gotten some power creep over the years but she’s made the get small go pew pew thing work for her and I appreciate it.

I also appreciate the art team Al Milgrom, Tony Dezuniga, and Paul Becton. Whichever of them decided that the opening splash page would be a great time to just draw a super detailed grasshopper just because. And that it seems alarmed by seeing a tiny person.

Anyway, Wasp deactivates the perimeter defenses with the deactivator that she happens to have. Did they give it to her in case she ever decided to drop in unannounced?

Because she’s unannounced.

She flies in through a window and in very Waspy fashion critiques the decor as ‘not bad but I would have done it different!’ and then finds the team moping or perhaps brooding together.

The team that broods together... I dunno, moods together?

They’re all sad about having to kick Iron Man off the team in Iron Man #229 so Wasp has shown up to offer moral support.

Iron Man gets kicked off more Avengers than you’d think.

Checking that issue really quick, oh neat its the one with the cover I consider to be the iconic Armor Wars cover because I saw it in Wizard magazine once.

I don’t have to read too far into the issue to bring the cross title context. Its how the issue opens.

The West Coast Avengers confront Iron Man, demanding to know why he’s been going around beating up other armored characters. Tony explains the Armor Wars plot, that he discovered that Spymaster had stolen some of Tony’s designs and sold them to Justin Hammer. And that Justin Hammer had equipped his lackeys with the tech and sold it to other criminals and governments.

Insert joke about redundancy, if you like.

Iron Man: “I obtained a list of the people utilizing that technology. A list complete save for one mysterious glitch. But when the amount of pain, destruction, and even death caused by the people on that list sank in -- my heart felt like a lump of shaved ice in my chest. My inventions were partly responsible -- and therefore I was responsible. Something had to be done.”

So in a very Tony Stark solving the problem esque way, he went and solved the problem by beating people up.

Hawkeye asked why Iron Man didn’t ask them for help and Iron Man says that he was afraid they’d say yes. And he didn’t want them to burn down their lives the way he’s doing to himself.

As chairman, Hawkeye has to worry about how Iron Man’s Armor Wars will make the Avengers look so he tells Tony to cut it out now.

Instead of cutting it out, Tony goes to Russia to try to negate his tech in the Crimson Dynamo and Titanium Man armors. But while’s he’s successful against Crimson Dynamo, he accidentally sorta kinda sets Titanium Man on fire. And kills him.

When Tony returns to the US, Iron Man has been branded a traitor and an outlaw and Russia is baying for him to be extradited to face murder charges. When Hawkeye tells him to account for himself, Tony says Titanium Man’s death was the result of self-defense and that he regrets but doesn’t apologize for it.

Not willing to tie the Avengers’ reputation to a wanted criminal, the West Coast Avengers take a vote and decide to boot Iron Man from the team.

Oof.

Not a great day for Tony.

So that’s the context that happened between issue 31 and 32. And why Jan says she came to visit the West Coast team.

Wasp: “It’s a time for us to pull together, like family!”

She even cut her vacation short, when she heard about the Armor Wars.

Saying so opens the floodgates of feelings. Let them all out, gentlemen.

Hawkeye: “Is this what it means to be the boss, Jan? Kicking out the guy who turned my life around and made me an Avenger in the first place?”

Wonder Man: “I figured he’d always be here! He was the one I measured myself against -- And if I decided after a while that I’d surpassed him, I still figured we’d test that out someday!’

Moon Knight: “I, on the other hand, hardly knew him -- !”

Pfft.

To make it better, in his internal dialogue with Khonshu, he also adds that they both found Iron Man’s armor pretty garishly colored. Because sun colors. Even though his Silver Centurion outfit is just silver and red. Maybe they’re thinking of the classic gold and red look?

Tigra asks Jan if Iron Man becoming an international criminal is really why she came to visit. Maybe she actually came to see her ex-husband Hank Pym hint hint hint hint??

And Hank just so happens to walk in just after Tigra insinuates.

Jan and Hank have... some kind of amicable exes conversation.

The last time they really saw each other was in West Coast Avengers Annual #2/Avengers Annual #16. Remember how the two Avengers teams fought each other?

Wasp: “I’m sorry that the only time we’ve met since you became an Avenger again, we had to fight -- !”

Dr Pym: “That’s all right! I’m not entirely sorry that I had to beat you!”

Wasp: “I just wasn’t prepared for the change in you! But if we make it two out of three -- !”

Dr Pym: “I’d still take you, Jan!”

Wow. Cannot believe Wasp tried to play nice by apologizing that the teams were tricked into fighting each other and Hank responds by going ‘well, I’m glad that I kicked your ass.’

And then Wasp says she’s sure she’d win if they made it two out of three and Hank goes ‘no I’d still kick your ass.’

Wow wow wow.

Tigra basically tells them to go fuck already. Wasp gets annoyed but Hank replies that Tigra is going to be catty.

I’d scold him for saying that but Tigra has repeatedly said she does x or y things because they’re cat things. She’s leaning into it.

Anyway, Wasp reiterates that she’s here to lend a hand in their time of crisis but Hawkeye says they’re have a good amount of hands between the five remaining members. And that if they need help they’ll call La Espirita or Hellcat or Hellstorm.

Oof.

Wasp says that she’s not here to try to usurp Hawkeye as the chairwoman of the east coast team. She left the position a while ago and she’s just here as an Avenger and friend.

Wasp: “But I’m not going to force myself on you -- !”

Hawkeye: “That’s not what I meant -- !”

LET HER STAY DAMMIT

Then Mockingbird comes in and suggests they ALL GO ON VACATION!

So while Wasp has been discussing with the rest of the team, Mockingbird hasn’t been in the room. She’s been in the next room over, on the phone, looking up information on Lincoln Slade (Phantom Rider) with the Mormon Genealogical Library. Apparently, they’ll just give information away. She learns that his only living relative is Hamilton Slade, a professor of archeology at the University of Nevada. So she calls the university and learns that Hamilton Slade is at the Grand Canyon.

So she comes into the conversation already in progress (says a quick ‘hi, Jan!’) and casually suggests that the whole team go to the Grand Canyon.

No need for a discussion, time skip to the next day where they’re going to the Grand Canyon. I guess a hike in the Grand Canyon sounded neat to everyone.

Although, after landing in the nearby airport, Hawkeye complains that he’d rather go to Seattle because he already spent more than enough time (and almost died) in Arizona while they were lost in space-time. But he was out-voted.

Jan is apparently impressed? Surprised? with the West Coast Avengers. Because she comments that she’s really seeing the difference in how the two teams are run. The West Coast Avengers are a lot more “hang-loose.”

Dr Pym: “Absolutely true, Waspie! We’re as proud of the Avengers’ past as anybody, but we had a chance to start over, and we’re takin’ advantage of it! That’s what the west’s all about!”

Tigra complains about how cold it is. She’s actually wearing more clothes than a bikini now and hugging herself for warmth.

She was expecting it to be warm but they’re in the mountains. So, it’s cold.

Wonder Man suggests that he could help warm her up by hugging her with his big, strong arms. But Moon Knight tells Simon to back off because Tigra is with him.

Which he’s assuming just because they’re made out a bunch. But Tigra tells him that she doesn’t belong to anyone.

Tigra, do you do anything besides generate love triangles?

She does tell Marc that she’s glad she makes him jealous because she’d be worried otherwise.

Geez, Tigra.

Khonshu chimes in Marc’s head and asks why the hell Marc is so into her. I mean geez, she’s obviously sun-oriented! Geez!

Marc tells his god to butt out because the heart wants what it wants and in this case it wants to make out with a catgirl.

Tigra mistakes Marc scowling at nothing as he communes with his god as him being mad at her and apologizes.

The West Coast Avengers and special guest the Wasp are all in civilian duds. Keeping low profile, y’know?

Except Wonder Man is a movie star who starred in a movie and all he did was put a coat on over his costume. He’s instantly recognized as movie star Simon Williams and a small crowd mobs him for autographs.

He seems chill about it but Hawkeye is a bit annoyed.

Maybe Hawkeye is annoyed because he foresees that Wonder Man will be at this for ten minutes.

Anyway, after that, the West Coast Avengers and special guest the Wasp start hiking down the Grand Canyon.

And Hank decides what this hike needs is an awkward conversation.

He asks his ex Jan why she’s really hanging out with the West Coast Avengers. Especially since she finished one vacation and then went on another one with the team.

Man, you sound like an idiot Hank. How many years of marriage and you don’t know that Jan loves the fuck out of vacations?

Haven’t you ever heard of needing a vacation from your vacation??

Jan tells Hank that she’s just curious how the West Coast Avengers operate since nobody from the East Coast team has spent much time with them since the new team was formed.

She tells him she’s definitely not here because of Hank’s “resurrection.”

You’re the only one bringing up the topic, Jan.

Dr Pym: “You make it sound like I was dead!”

Wasp: “After that strange vidcall, where you sounded so sad -- !”

That would be the call Hank made when he was making preparations to kill himself. Before La Espirita manic pixie dreamgirl’d into his life. Jan doesn’t know about that. She just knows he made a weird call where it sounded like he was saying goodbye and the next thing she knows, he’s reinvented himself like he’s having a midlife crisis. Got a new look, a new ride, new powerset.

You know... speaking of the new look... The red jumpsuit is fine. Neat to have a costume that’s more utility. But I kind of liked when it looked like he would just do superheroing in his lapcoat.

Everyone else on the hike pretends not to be eavesdropping, while totally eavesdropping.

Wonder Man draws a comparison to when Hank and Jan seemed a perfect couple when he first met them in Avengers #9. Versus how messy their breakup was.

Hawkeye asks Mockingbird whether she thinks Wasp came specifically to see Hank. But Mockingbird, unlike the others, really isn’t eavesdropping. She’s distracted by her own thoughts and quickly changes the subject to go HEY LOOK BUDIANSKY POINT!

Among SHIELD agents, its known as the place giant anti-Godzilla robot Red Ronin fought a giant monster.

And while Hawkeye is looking at Budiansky Point and not her, Mockingbird chucks an explosive into the canyon, causing a massive WHOOM of an explosion that unleashes

YETRIGAR!

A GIANT BIGFOOT OF A KAIJU!

Or, more probably, a giant yeti.

During the confusion of a giant explosion and then a giant yeti, Mockingbird slips away but Hawkeye notices her absence and gets worried. Because she went missing after a giant explosion and the emergence of a giant yeti.

But Moon Knight notices her ducking down a side trail and covers for her, claiming he saw her thrown back thisaway and runs off after her.

Reassured that Mockingbird is entirely safe probably, Hawkeye calls for the West Coast Avengers to Avengers Assemble on Yetrigar.

Which involves:

Crumping.

See? Crumping.

As Moon Knight follows Mockingbird, encouraged by Khonshu who is intrigued by the her, the floating disembodied ghost heads of Steven Grant and Jake Lockley pop up. Steven complains that Khonshu is monopolizing too much of Marc’s time and Jake says Steven just wants to be the one monopolizing the time. Marc’s floating disembodied ghost head tells both of them to knock it off.

And I guess Moon Knight sees all these floating disembodied ghost heads because he comments how weird it is that Marc appeared alongside the other “false personalities.”

Khonshu just shrugs it off that to an ageless god like himself, all personalities seem ephemeral.

Good talk, guy.

Mockingbird reaches a ridge overlooking the camp of Hamilton Slade.

All of what she’s done - convincing the West Coast Avengers to go to the Grand Canyon and then unleashing a giant yeti monster - it’s all been to get some face time with this guy.

And beat the fuck out of him.

Imagine his perspective.

He’s doing his archeology thing, minding his own business, and a woman tackles him out of nowhere and tells him to leave her the fuck alone or she’ll murder him.

He has no idea what the fuck is going on!

He recognizes her as the Avenger Mockingbird but he has no idea about Phantom Rider except that his grandfather’s grandfather had the name!

And while Mockingbird is yelling at this guy, Moon Knight watches from above. Khonshu’s voice in his head approving of Mockingbird.

Mockingbird doesn’t take a ‘I don’t know what’s going on!’ as an answer and starts punching Hamilton repeatedly in the face.

Meanwhile, Hank Pym has a plan!

Which is good because while Wonder Man has been having the time of his life punching a giant yeti in the face, he also has to acknowledge that without Iron Man as another flying strong guy to back him up, there’s way too much risk of a bystander getting hurt.

(Dammit, Mockingbird!)

Hank tells Wasp to go sting Yetrigar as hard as she can while he briefs everyone else.

Wasp: “Fine -- I sting him as hard as I can! It’s still Goliath’s grandpop versus David’s little sister!”

Although, since Wasp is actually awesome, she stings Yetrigar hard enough to get his attention and ire. Good job, Wasp!

Then per Hank’s plan, Hawkeye uses his cable-arrows to tie down the distracted Yetrigar.

Hank and Tigra jump on the monster’s back. Hank for plan reasons and Tigra to keep Hank from falling off.

Hank does almost fall off, by the way, when Yetrigar breaks the cable arrows keeping him bent over. But Tigra catches Hank. Good job, Tigra!

A very crucial part of Hank’s plan was to find Yetrigar’s ear under all that hair. So he could stick a brace in it and then use his Pym powers to enlarge it.

The pain of something growing inside his ear makes the giant monster pass out and fall to the ground.

And that’s how the West Coast Avengers beat a giant monster.

But back to the part of the plot where Mockingbird is beating a man to death.

Moon Knight grabs her and pulls her off Hamilton.

Mockingbird is alarmed that one of her teammates saw her beating the shit out of some guy but Moon Knight goes full 0 to 60 damage control.

Moon Knight: “You -- man! This was a mistake, you understand? The lady mistook you for another! Even Avengers cannot be perfect! I realize no words can recompense you for the shock and pain you’ve suffered, but send all medical bills to me personally at West Coast Avenger Headquarters and I’ll see that they are paid in full! To me personally -- understand? Submit nothing to your insurance! This is an internal Avengers matter! We would consider it a great and personal favor if you could find it in your heart not to report this to anyone! Few would believe you, anyway!”

Geez. Just blasting all that out there breathlessly feels kind of scummy.

He doesn’t even give the man a chance to respond before walking off with Mockingbird. And the man does look beat to hell. His face covered in bruising.

Mockingbird insists as they’re walking away that this random Grand Canyon archeologist is Phantom Rider but Moon Knight tells her to keep moving.

She asks why he interfered.

Moon Knight: “I hardly know myself! I admire your method! But a striking fist must be driven by certainty, not supposition! --- And --- I need to develop many friends among the Avengers now!”

Aww? Frens?

Real frens will help you cover up a crime?

Anyway, as soon as the two heroes are out of eye shot, Hamilton is like ‘well, that was weird!’

He wonders if this has anything to do with something he’s done during one of the blackouts he’s been getting since he found the burial cave of Lincoln Slade, Phantom Rider.

... You’re an idiot, Hamilton.

Anyway, the phantom of Phantom Rider possesses Hamilton just so he can have a big laugh about the situation.

You sure have fun by yourself, Phantom Rider.

Anyway. Right after knocking Yetrigar the fuck out, Hawkeye gets right back to wondering where Mockingbird is. So thankfully, she and Moon Knight return at just that moment.

Mockingbird lies and says that the mysterious explosion - that could have been caused by anything who knows - pinned her leg under a boulder. But that Moon Knight got her free.

Hawkeye is so pleased at what a good job Moon Knight is doing rescuing his wife that he announces on the spot that Moon Knight’s probationary period is over. He’s a full-fledged Avenger (West Coast)!

Tigra, being characteristically catty, points out that Mockingbird keeps vanishing when there’s a fight. But nobody really pays attention to that.

Wasp announces this is some vacation but she’s gotten a measure of the team now AND she knows a strained relationship when she sees it. She used to see it in the mirror every day.

(Oof.)

But what’s weird is that while Mockingbird is showing the signs of a strained relationship, Hawkeye is coming off like he thinks everything is hunky-dory.

Wasp: “What’s going on in this group...?”

Oh, you have no idea what nonsense you just walked into, Jan.
