I really enjoyed reading DC multiverse comic Superman Smashes the Klan. The story was great and the art was amazing! Gurihiru’s art is so appealing to look at and there are so many wonderful things about how he draws that I can’t begin to describe it.
That being said I wanted to study from the style so I gave myself a little homework assignment to see if I could try to emulate it a bit. I learned a lot! I decided for my assignment that I would try to draw the CW Supergirl’s Supergirl and Lena Luthor as close as I could in Gurihiru’s style and within the realm of the before mentioned Superman comicbook universe.
Also there isn’t a Supergirl in that comic so the appeal was to make her feel like she was from that time of 1946… though I decided to go with Lena and Kara Zor-El’s comic aliases names from back in the day rather than Kara Danvers and Lena Luthor…I guess to be truer to the earlier comic universe versions of them. When the two characters first met in the comics they were both living under aliases. Lena to avoid the shameful association with her criminal brother and Kara for obvious reasons.
Why model sheets? Well, What I wanted to do was make a three page comic within this universe and it’s style, however I was finding it difficult to draw a consistent looking character from panel to panel so I decided that the easiest option was to make some character model sheets with expressions. This way I can always refer back to a model sheet and see if I can even draw these characters in the first place consistently.
I took liberties with her outfit, Supergirl doesn’t show up in the actual old DC comics until later in the 1960s, so I hope the skirt length checks out for the 40s, heh. Anyway, I hope I did okay being a geeky artist.
There are pictures, there are photographs and there are portraits. These portraits represent a room that was filled with love and talent that deserve the recognition of everyone.
hello everyone remember how kara was split into two parts and the only things that she remembered was the name alex and also lena luthor & when she went to national city she had no interest in talking to alex but read kara’s diary entry specifically abt lena and was so obsessed w lena she had to go find and speak w her even though she wasn’t supposed to and then when lex was angry w her she said “this is about lena” and he said “i thought you were stronger”

was watching some early missions, ep29 is one of my favs from all the silly scenes they have together. I feel like its one of the few times Allen acts his age & Lenalee’s reaction to him being coy is cute.
Supercorp doesn’t yet exist in the Harley Quinn universe, that I am aware of, so I’m making it exist. What do you think of the character design? Aged them to about to graduate/ graduate college intern age.
I picture in this world, Kara was raised someplace that was more conservative so she’s very nervous and closeted about her relationship. Not just because of internalized homophobia, but also because, ‘Ahhh, A Super dating a Luthor!’ That probably freaks her out more. It’s Romeo and Juliet vibes. She’s still a goody two shoes, but not as bad at puns as her cousin. She spends a lot of time with Krypto and Streaky the Super Cat due to anxiety. She also is afraid of accidently hurting people with her powers. She interns at the Daily Planet and is repeatably accidentally breaking things. Kara still eats a surprisingly large amount for her size. And she’s a ridiculously thoughtful person...maybe a little bit of a people pleaser.
Haven’t thought out Lena’s personality completely just yet. But I have a few ideas. I think Lena would be protective and supportive of Kara but a little annoyed about all the secretiveness. Since she’s not actively trying to be evil... but nepotism and talent lands her a job interning for the Legion of Doom since her brother runs it. A paid internship is a paid internship. I also picture her being ridiculously useful in trying to infiltrate the legion of Doom anywhere in the world because she’s a Luthor, who’s gonna question her?
Also, Lena would be at this point like disturbingly desensitized to anything messed up that her and supers/ Harley and crew would see in one of these LOD facilities. She’s followed Lex around her whole life, she’s seen some stuff. Like Lena has probably accidently walk in on the tail end of Lex torturing someone near the end of the workday and then they’d go out for tacos afterwards. But then she goes away to college, realizes how messed up her brother is, start trying to do good in the world with her skills/ money, and starts dating a super. So, Lex would probably blame colleges for pushing their liberal agendas on their students for her wanting to be a decent human being.
And I mean it, Lena would be so desensitized to violence that it would be scary, like Clayface and King Shark would pale at her throwaway lines like,
“This is just a Tuesday at my brother’s lab as a kid. Wednesday’s at Lex’s lab was also Ice Cream Sundae Day...” She’d have a lot to unlearn.
