So again, I watched a Youtube video on Dark Academia and decided to share my 2 cents

I'm not going to share the video this time because it doesn't really matter (It was a vid by Jack Edwards, if the mystery is killing you), but I felt compelled to take a look at the comments section to see what people were saying in response to the video.

As I suspected, it was mostly superficial comments on how the Youtuber looked, Hogwarts references, and general love/hateration on the dark academia aesthetic.

But one young person who identified themselves as a high school student who loved the aesthetic but felt very excluded from it because she's not from a wealthy background shared her thoughts on why she felt the DA aesthetic is toxic and boxes people in.

Well, I disagreed with that and thought I'd shared my perspective on it, while also being respectful of the fact that she's going through a difficult period in life, and her conclusion was likely a reflection of that.

Here's what I said:

Please feel free to ignore this, but what you said really touched me, and I feel like I can offer some advice. Just for background info, I'm an African American woman living in city that's predominantly POC. I'm also in my early 40s, and I run an arts and culture blog.

Regarding your response, might I suggest that you appreciate that no *one* person is just *one* thing. Even college professors at historic universities like Cambridge and Harvard wear blue jeans and sweatshirts, but they simply don't do so within the scope of their jobs as professors. They're not boxed in. They're simply applying one version of themselves to a specific space, while applying another version of themselves to another specific space.

That's not limiting or toxic. That's just being human. No one is a "hippie bohemian" or "trendsetting fashionista" all the time. You simply apply what works for you in that aesthetic that you like to your life where you feel it's appropriate.

I agree with you that everyone should live their lives, but the purpose of aesthetics is to feel free to explore the different aspects of you. Something you may be into today may fall by the wayside 10 years from now. And that's OK. Because you're a human being who is constantly growing, developing and exploring. It's one of the more beautiful parts of life. And goodness knows life is hard enough as it is, so why not embrace it?

As someone who lived the "dark academia life" before it was an aesthetic (we're talking the 1990s-early 00s), I never felt alienated by the dark academia world itself. I went to an upper middle class high school (not private school though) and I was surrounded by economically privileged kids who went out of their way to make me feel excluded. But the beauty of dark academia is that all the things that make it what it is are available to everyone outside of that environment.

Almost anyone can read these books if they borrowed from the library, listen to this music online or borrowed it from the library, write handwritten letters, wear clothes in a similar style but at a lower price point, go to museums (on a free day or discounted day), visit art galleries (which is usually free, and if you go during an opening reception, you also get to enjoy free wine and finger food), drink coffee (if you like coffee), write poetry, learn to play chess, study hard, and so on.

It's not the aesthetic that makes you feel excluded, it's the people you associate with it. I enjoyed many of these activities while going to an inexpensive state university on a scholarship. There were days when I dressed in ironed trousers and a nice blouse or sweater, and there were days when I wore ripped jeans and T-shirts.

We're all a work-in-progress, and you should give yourself space to do just that. For me, I studied English Lit., then went into publishing. Now I work for an art gallery, go to the theater for fun, and play jazz and classical albums on my record player. But I also wear blue jeans every day, shop at Aldi's to save money, and blast hip hop and pop music when I want to dance around my home.

Give yourself time and space. Those kids at your school may exclude you, but this aesthetic doesn't. It's for everyone if you know how to adapt it to the person you are now. Not because you're trying to be something you're not, but because you're drawn to something that brings you joy.

Just know that you're not alone, and the road ahead will be worthy of the literature I'm sure you talk about on your blog (should you ever choose to write about it). Have a great rest of your day!

I’ve been watching too much Community and got a plot bunny for this. Based on this request for the same trope. Since that one was kind of the prologue to what would be a choose-your-own-route type, this piece is sort of Nobunaga’s route ending. Haha.

“Sensei.”

“Oh God!” You jolt, your cheap office chair rattling a little at the sudden movement. Trying your best to appear intimidating, you whirl to look behind your desk, filled with stuff you’re ready to bring home, to gauge who in the world decided to surprise you with a visit at six in the evening. It’s way past your working hours and the faculty room is, excluding you, empty.

Your eyes meet carnelian ones and you let out an exasperated sigh. 

“Nobunaga-san,” you begin, pinching the bridge of your nose, “please refrain from scaring the hell out of me like that ever again.”

He stands there, wearing a casual button up and slacks and carrying a bouquet in one hand (he’s been giving you one almost every week since you started teaching here), expression absolutely unfazed, if not slightly amused. You furrow your eyebrows at him, murmuring your thanks when he hands you the gift, though upon looking at them closely, your face softens somewhat.

White camellias. They’re especially pretty.

“Not that I’d get the chance to,” he retorts, “you’ll be leaving soon.”

Sending him a half-smile and a shrug, you reply. “Kitahara-sensei’s maternity leave doesn’t last forever.”

“You don’t see any chance I can convince her to spend more time with her newborn?”

You laugh, finding it rare of him to crack a joke in front of you, though something tells you he might actually pull that off. This man, persistent in his actions and words, ambitious, charismatic. You’ve never encountered a student like him—not even a person like him. That, and the way he seems to look at you, his flowers... make you feel... special. 

“She extended her time off to three more months, Nobunaga-san. That’s chiefly the reason why I’m with your class till the end of the semester.”

“Stop calling me that.”

You’re taken aback by his voice, low in his chest and suddenly so close. The tips of his dress shoes are touching yours.

“Calling you what?” You whisper, scarcely hearing yourself over the hammering of your heartbeat. You’re an adult. You know exactly what’s happening. Did you predict this, fantasize about this, consider the possibility of this? No, maybe, and yes, though just a fraction, which is why having him just an arm’s length away in front of you so suddenly feels nerve-wracking. 

A bouquet of flowers a week and a policy of not dating students equals this moment, in the middle of a deserted faculty room bleeding in sunset orange.

“Nobunaga-san,” he pauses. “For once, I’d like to hear just my name.”

He says that like you’re not his godforsaken substitute teacher. When his hand rests on your cheek, thumb stroking oh-so-gently on your skin, it’s like your crumbling facade falls. Your efforts to not notice him more than a student instantaneously halted, and you view him, for the first time in your six months of being his professor, as a man.

“...Nobunaga,” you hesitantly reply, because how can you not when you deep down truly want this? He utters your name back without proper honorifics and you swallow at the sound. How can a person make you react the way you did to your name being called?

You’re still processing the reality of the situation when he asks you a question.

“Do you know what while camellias mean?”

“I teach Japanese Literature, not Intro to Flower Language,” you manage to answer.

“They symbolize waiting.”

A bouquet of flowers a week and a policy of not dating students.

You feel his thumb on your lower lip, drawing slow strokes as if coaxing them to open. 

“I’m looking forward to the last day of class.”

“...Me too,” you answer, mouth almost completely dry.

“Good. Make yourself free after. I’ll take you to dinner.”

You nod, and he leans forward to kiss you on the cheek.

It might be his perfume or his warm hand. Either way, there’s a flare of courage in your belly after discovering the thing you secretly hope for is actually true, and as if to thank him, you cup his face and press your lips to his, a deep kiss that doesn’t last long enough for him to reciprocate.

“See you next week,” you say to him with a grin, and grabbing your things, you quickly leave the office.

Nobunaga manages to catch a glimpse of your back before you disappear, turning a corner, leaving him all by his lonesome. He scoffs to and for no one in particular and touches his lips. Your taste lingers.

He’s grateful you’re not around to see the warmth dusting his cheeks.

April 5th: What was school like for you, or what is it currently like for you if you are still in school? Elementary, high school, post-secondary?

i Hate/d school lmfao......like i do Like To Learn and Know Shit, and of course Sometimes / on some occasions it was like, hey i'm having a good to pretty great time at school, but those were usually Special occasions or teachers going out of their way to give us you know, fun projects / go beyond the Standardized Testing curriculum, which natch they couldn't always do / did require sort of going Above & Beyond, rather than being the constant, guaranteed experience of like hooray for school......it's like, oh hooray re: the Play Scenes my fourth grade english class did that was like, an Extra thing, where we got to audition and i just had a great time like oh right, clearly Theatre in retrospect, or hooray re: the field trips, or projects we did In Class, since i hated homework.......i was always that accursed (i mean, not accursed for Me, but) combination of "really a terrible student but also gets great grades" lmao i forever do things Last Minute but like, when i was At school, in class, i'd just power through whatever work there was then & there usually, and in middle school would sometimes do hw on the bus, as i was the last on the bus route to be picked up in the morning or dropped off in the afternoon, but as soon as i got home i was in Home Mode and yknow. didn't just sit down and continue School Stuff asap. also hardly ever Studying unless it's the night / morning before a test lmfao but i had a great memory for that stuff, so studying that last minute was like "yep, i Do remember this from going over it 2 seconds ago" so yknow, despite hating school / no good Study Habits(tm) or anything, i did fine. i also read a ton, at home or at school and at any other point. so i was also like, quiet and generally ~well behaved~ or whatever lol (the like "how are kids (or anyone) supposed to stay focused and on task for 7+ hours a day..." thing), segue into next paragraph

i also remember like, 3 day a week preschool being the first time i was, you know, in some sort of School and also around other kids that much, i did have this sense that like, somehow there were Rules that i wasn't following, not re: Classroom Rules or something, but wrt socializing with peers, like that everyone else had something going on in how they interacted which i wasn't gonna get right, & i had this sense of like, not really being Allowed to interact lmao, even being 4 years old i have a few distinct memories re: this of like, a) choosing to play by myself in the classroom or when outside, and b) my "best friend" being the one person who just like, chose to hang out with me lmfao, but i was like oh cool Having A Friend lmao, like i didn't Not want to have friends, i was just already aware of like, i don't feel like i can just up and interact w/these people and i don't feel like they want me to, and c) re: that being aware of whatever Rules Of Interaction existing and that i wouldn't meet them / abide by them and thus there'd be some kind of repercussion for not meeting those rules, and not being allowed, i remember that like. there was this other indoor playspace in the lower level and there were toys i wanted to play with but Refrained from, and it was like, why did 4 yr old me get the idea i Wasn't Really Allowed, and most of what i can theorize is that it was like, well other kids might want to play with that, and the Normal / Better kids should get priority lmao, and/or being nervous that it just might otherwise lead to some sort of Interaction i wouldn't feel ready for.....and d) sitting at a table with like whatever 4 or 5 other kids or something and amongst ourselves someone was like "oh put your foot in the middle if you're [x]" and i tried to join in on a technicality lmfao and also just in, you know, active efforts to be Participating with these other kids on their terms, and it did not pay off, something that repeated uhhhhh, forever i guess lol. insert that post like can allistic people be normal for 5 seconds.....

like in elementary school i wasn't really making friends either, incredibly, i was Amicably Tolerated by many people then & like, again also at any point after at least lmao (and it helps that i was generally in teachers' good graces, not that i narced on anyone ever, but i had like, my Niche as the Academically Successful One, and also i was the kid who draws, another shoutout to some post and tweet about how being The Drawing Kid was like, some measure of respect but also disdain lmfao...) and sometimes people would again like. choose to interact with me repeatedly, and i'd sort of be nonplussed at best b/c it's like, okay thanks but in this situation i didn't Choose this any more than i choose [Trying to be in the group but being rejected/excluded], so it's kinda weird, i was friends with someone for a few years in elementary school but we just were Coincidentally in the same class for those years, when we were in different classes in 3rd or 4th grade and just weren't seeing each other it fizzled out, in middle school i made another couple friends where we were all being Funny lmao, but i didn't go to high school, so once again we weren't seeing each other, and [At School] was where i always had most Interactions with people, didn't see people much outside of school even if we were hanging out / being friends During school, for [a whole tangent] reasons, so. guess the good news is i'm still in touch / friendly acquaintances with some people from school from college, but even then, there was Some more social success or whatever, but not all That much, and i was still unhappy like, not having many friends, often being like "i'm going to the cafe a block away b/c i have no social occasions here and i want to get out of the dorm / be around people," that if i was with more than one other person i could end up the third wheel friend lmao or nobody is paying attention when you talk or oh no i put myself out there hanging with a friend group but maybe people thought you were a joke or something, thanks. smh

and that like, speaking of college, i went early but this was, for my part, truly primarily driven like "well i hate school so if i can Not go to high school, okay" and like, while i got in and everything it was still like "tf is college, i've never known what i Want To Do so i wonder if i'll figure this out, but i'm not expecting to last past the first semester / year b/c this is college and i'm a terrible student actually lol" but then turns out i kept doing well enough like A's & B's like oh woops i guess i'm still here, then, hope i can figure out what tf "credit hours" means (finally did lol).....then sophomore year was a bunch of just Agonizing over "what tf do i major in," something i never figured out, wherein i might bring something up & it got parentally shot down like "never heard you talk about that" like what tf Did you hear me talk about? are you thinking i had my life figured out by age 9, b/c i didn't think that, i'm only 15/16 even Now, even being the Regular college age it's like, nobody's figuring their life out then. also i didn't tell my parents things, so. and then i settle on something that sure, Might've been of interest, but also it was like, a) a program that barely existed and req'd taking classes at a like 30 min away campus and also the head of department had Just retired and the most heinous teacher in the related fields was now in charge, brilliant and b) the sort of thing you'd just wanna start taking prerequisites for like as soon as you set foot on campus, like, great. and c) i was like, hardly feeling all the Academic Ambition anyway b/c i never had, b/c i hate/d school, and b/c i still didn't Know what i wanted to major in, and i was stressed n depressed and also realizing oh right, i'm not cishet, and oh right, i'm never going to get along with my family b/c [long tangent] reasons and that's kind of concerning, here i am impending Being 18 and like, how do i get out of this b/c it's becoming clearer that i'm not just gonna start getting along with the 'rents now that i'm not an elementary schooler and also now that i'm realizing the Reasons being at home sucks. guess i learned stuff in college lol but also it was like, the experience of getting to be Away From Home and existing every day without parents literally / figuratively over my shoulder at some point every day, and getting to do shit on my own and figure things out while Not At Home.....i also had a lot of fun taking a couple classes from this one music prof lol. he was this weird really enthusiastic and really knowledgeable guy lmao like great, these evening classes where we go over to the arts building and he plays things on the piano off the cuff and tells a lot of tangential stories while we're learning about like, beethoven technically, or folk music. didn't need those classes but they were great, i've had these teachers who were totally into whatever they were teaching and had a great time with that

also acknowledgment to the fact i was a No Extracurriculars person all through school, k thru 6 and college alike really, although i took dance class for that k thru 6 period, just that was separate from school actually (and another fun "being away from home" thing and Theatresque performance thing i enjoyed) but besides that it was like, how do i figure out what i want to do without committing to joining this whole thing, i don't know How to sign up for stuff really either, and it'd probably entail "asking for stuff" and needing to coordinate more rides and etc and that's just a hassle, and i wanna go home from school asap anyways, and then like, when it came to college, i was again at first thinking like "well idk what i'm doing and i hate homework so i'll probably mess it up in this first year anyways" and figured that doing anything Extra outside classes was just gonna be too much, and also, it's like, i've never been in these kinds of groups before and why am i gonna start in college, where there'll probably be all these people who Have done this stuff before, and are also 18? e.g. even though it was like "hey you're away from home and don't have to ask/tell anyone else anything to do this club stuff or whatever!" supposed ideal environment for trying stuff out, it was like, maybe i'm theoretically interested in auditioning for the fall theatre production, but the last acting experience i had was like, "2 month drama class in middle school" or "that 4th grade [section of a] play" so like, not really Any education or experience or Training re: any of that stuff, and a bunch of 18 yr olds who might've, or [age peers] who were theatre people who had already done stuff so they weren't getting Lead Roles or anything but they were getting cast / taking classes / joining an a capella group while i'm like right on, i'm over here with some sort of Grade Honor Society (??) saying my gpa qualifies me to join and be able to experience some further academic rigor/requirements lmfao and i'm like absolutely not. get away lol. anyways so bit of a chaotique Post K12 Zone Education Experience there lmfao, all kinds of things i'd Like to Learn and even take classes on, but didn't like, right i love learning languages but never took classes, love math and shit but only got to a certain level of calc and even then seemed to miss some Lore, never did anything re: theatre, etc and so on. so you wonder if some advantages re: high school would be like, more chances for those extracurriculars (or regular curriculars) but, as though i wouldn't have the same qualms about getting in on any of it, and as if i wouldn't've still hated school but also still been at home, F. and i think people can be a lot more normal to each other when it's college and you're Not stuck in one building together 8 hours a day lmao, got some gentle "occasional Bullying style attention" in middle school, but had juuust enough like, [that Niche of good grades / kid who draws] and people who Were friendlier to me that it was you know, unpleasant, but didn't have to be that huge a deal, and then i was outta there soon enough. also, in college many people are 18 or older, as opposed to 11 to 13. anyways the rest of my school story was that in the end the problems were "i don't know what i want to major in and also now's a worse time than ever b/c i've realized my existence At Home is untenable, and naturally i am quite depressed & stressed about things, and i gotta say absolutely virtually every adult presence was either totally unhelpful to Counterproductive here lmao, like, not much anyone could do really but it's helpful when someone is like, i'll treat you like a person vs simply just going 'uh why are you not doing the academic stuff good enough'" lmfao like. the whole time Not having friends i'd wanna talk to through class and happening to get good grades in part b/c i somehow Could as easily as i did and also i was afraid of getting C's or worse b/c "tfw i wasn't even yet in a grade that gave you A thru F grades yet but my older sister caught shit for getting a C

like :/" and etc means adults are like My Student Is Fine, and also, what are you gonna do even if they aren't, i guess. i just had to figure out completely for myself Why and How i really wasn't Fine and that was quite difficult and also took a long time. then there was a mutual prank of "i drop out of college at the tail end of things" and "now i have to be at home with parent/s more resentful of your obvious Waywardness (insert: not being cishet, and the fact it occurs to me that my being autistic was always causing 'problem' behavior i was getting shit for like, the whole time lmfao, even if nobody knew / labeled it like oh this is for ND reasons, or if it was both true i tried to come out (smh, thought i Had to b/c that was part of Not Being Cishet) and it was simply ignored / unaddressed and yet it sure fueled further specific resentment of my not Performing Gender properly, or "worse," so that went well, in that i eventually abruptly left and did not maintain contact, in the interest of "the levels to which i was thriving was like, that if i bailed and like died 50 hrs later it'd still be what i want to do," true to that i did not / don't regret it. and what do you know, i was first able to bail to a relatively nearby friend from college's home, whose family also liked me lmao. shoutout to school still being where i made Any friends, except a friend i made who was a coworker of several years. and Online Friends, which, another school connection, that like, i can more readily Connect w/people via talking about interests, something that happened Sometimes at school in person lmao but not much, but also that i Talk About Interests in a way through Drawing, which, well shoutout to doodling in the margins of papers throughout school lmfao, it didn't hurt! that's my saga.

oh and that footnote, i also really enjoyed the "in middle school you either take language classes or 4 Electives you rotate through each year" and those electives sure featured some more varied and hands on activities i had a great time with. shoutout to like, cooking, and to shop class, my Car Designs were great apparently, idk how. shoutout to my Intuition re: engineering or something lmaoo.....very fun to just end the schoolday in that big garage space where you could actually open that garage door right to where all the buses were, beautiful. Oh, and that's another footnote, when my last class of the day in 8th grade was english, i'd sometimes finish work early and my teacher would let me go to our spacious library, with the v nice librarian who'd recommend books to me she thought should be checked out more often b/c she knew i liked to read that much, and also just generally had teachers / other adult staff kinda wandering in at the end of the day, talk about "i don't really relate to other ppl my age" where i did generally prefer to be around adults, so that was fun. oh and also shoutout to hating school lmao wherein during like, middle school when the schoolday started at like 7:30am or smthing disgusting and i just learned to like, view whatever time it was in a "at least it's almost [x]" like well okay, first period is math and that kinda sucks but at least once it's over this hardest part of the day will be over, then next class is kinda more chill at least, and then it'll be the last period before lunch, etc etc etc where i could sort of keep up that stamina like telling myself at any point it was Almost [a more encouraging time of day] lmao like. kinda fucked up to have to be dragging yourself through the weekdays like that, but

Oh! goddamn and i didn't even get into that if i ever got in ~trouble~ in elementary school it was stuff like Not Paying Attention, but where half the time that might be some other kid beside me messing around lmfao and i'm not gonna be like "uhhh follow the rules!!!" (and that even when i was In Trouble like go sit in the chair where you have to be quiet there for like 10 min i might say something to some other kid in that zone and they'd be like "um it's the quiet chair you have to be quiet!!" or "uh we're getting into the next lesson and you have to put that book back asap" like wow these other kids are dweebs about Rules lmfao) and there'd just be times like, it's 1st grade and i know how to read pretty well already but we're going over the alphabet like stoppp i know the Phonics already........or the ways ND people can kind of Intuit some stuff more successfully, like in third grade learning multiplication i neverrrrr studied but just broke it down like, okay i remember the Fives b/c of telling time, i know the 2x table and stuff, i know the commutative property, if we're all the way at the 8x and i haven't Memorized stuff, i can still like, break it down to say, [5 x 8] + [8 x 2] or something when i see 8 x 7, even if it takes a second lmfao.......and stuff like the tragedy of when i Did make a friend in like, 2nd grade, who i think we didn't even talk to each other ever?? i was playing legos or smthing by myself once during Indoor Recess and she just started playing agreeably along with me, aka someone socializing on My Terms apparently as our Introduction, and we just were friends past that but one time, not even during a Lesson Session, we were messing around quietly making each other laugh as the incredibly important process of "put papers in your folders" was going on, and since we were Not Paying Attention for some reason the teacher made a whole example of it where i had to carry my desk across the classroom for the Shaming Element of it and also so that i had to permanently sit way further from that friend, so that was kind of discouragement re: interacting at all. thank you to that teacher, who'd later once Gesticulate to me from across the gym that i should put my arms down at my sides rather than being crossed (we were rehearsing some class performance) & i had no idea what she was trying to convey, so afterwards she told me i had to have Reduced Recess Time or some shit because of Ignoring her instead of putting my arms down lmfao. and i was irritated at having been misinterpreted / my Intentions dictated to me and punished like that, but i was also used to it from adults lmfao and did not bother explaining myself lol like yeah god forbid i left my arms crossed on purpose and now i have to read some more during recess. tl;dr school has so much nonsense & i def had some Times re: being autistic & also just being someone who hated school forever lmao, think it was Also 2nd grade where one arbitrary sunday night i just cried out of frustration at having to go back for another normal school week. classic. oh and that also, while i wasn't like "oooo booksmart people who hate not having a Definitive Correct Answer to things &/or ohhh autistic ppl So Good at math, in a way everyone hates and disrespects, but they suck at Literature/Arts which requires you to reflect on humanity and shit," like, not only was i the drawing kid but i was also apparently ahead of the curve as it were at like, Literary Analysis lmfao where there was a few times in elementary school i'd be the kid providing the Interpretation like "what's this poem about / what's the theme or Symbolism in this story," but from elementary school to college it's like, for god's sake don't ask me to come up with a story / work with some really open ended prompt, i don't Invent in that way, and when i try to draw on Inspiration i'll get stuck on some specific source and be unable to do anything but just rip it off really lmao. but then again i was prolific in "it's 1st grade and you write and illustrate a little short story or smthing in these booklets

that we then have a simple little binding process for" like ohhh fancy, i got a tootsie roll lollipop at Awards Time for writing a shit ton of those lol. but that's like, when you're too young to have that much of a Creative Process anyways lmao. but then, my older sister, whose Thing was writing, has an incredible 2 Volume like, noir mystery saga from those elementary school times, it's a classic lmao. anyways once again so much to say about School lol closing the door after meandering on that one for this long lol

April 6th: Are you able to drive? If so, was it difficult to learn? What was difficult about it? If not, do you use any alternatives?

i did learn to drive, tbh just universally it's like, at any point you're driving there's A Lot to pay attention to at once, even if you think you're Good At That or whatever, which i sure don't think i always am lol, and it's pretty wild we just, you know, let everyone go around as fast as they want in machines that can kill you or someone else, and this is also Unnecessary b/c like, let's have accessible & reliable public transit so that everyone can travel without Needing to have a car / someone else who will drive them. i didn't think i had too much trouble learning to drive, but it had to help that i just took it very seriously from the start lmao like, well, i'm quite aware i could kill someone with this. the driving classes i took were alright, i remember the instructor being pretty chill and friendly lol. rip to the fact i could be tense when driving with parent/s, when driving a manual i'd always like screech the tires when accelerating out of a Stop, until all at once it was like "and i'm driving that manual car alone on a road trip & wouldn't you know it, only literally once did i have that issue of not getting out of a stop smoothly enough" lmao like the Anxiety......really like yeah i had an alright time learning and think i'm solid enough at driving / like doing it, theoretically, but Driving Is Wild just in general and let's have that public transit

April 7th: How are you with sarcasm and/or metaphors/figures of speech? Do you interpret things very literally?

i think i Usually get what people mean with these Devices but i can't really say lol, but anytime you know, someone is being more Implicit in what they say, plenty of times i can infer one implication and only later realize they probably meant a different one, or yknow, i make whatever initial inference i make and can be stuck like "???" and have to like, mentally run diagrams about the interaction lol......meanwhile i'm not always remembering that like, if i'm shifting context mentally that's necessarily able to be inferred by whoever i'm talking to lol, whether it's about getting into some adjacent topic or like, i don't think it tends to be very clear even in person when i've started being sarcastic lmao, like i know that can be true for anyone but it's like well, guess i gotta make it clearer i'm doing a bit......flipside of that or something lmao that people are more Obvious than they think they are sometimes about like, idk, when someone is sort of making some sarcastic remark to you but the sarcasm is also sort of only to themself, aka just like okay i know you mean this more dismissively / disparagingly than re: what you're saying just at face value lol like. just always fun >:/

You nodded as you walked alongside your best friend, Bang Chan, to your guys�� next class, wordlessly agreeing with his speech about how he, Changbin and Jisung would ‘make like, the best rap group ever’, so as he liked to put it. You were just about to open your mouth to speak when Minho walked into the conversation.

“Hey, Chan” He smiled, completely ignoring your presence, knowing how much it pissed you off

“Hey, Minho” Chan spoke awkwardly, feeling the tension rise despite you and Minho not having had said a single word to one another

“Hello, Minho” You seethed, being obnoxiously loud, still, the annoying boy pretended like you didn’t exist

“We’ve got the next class together, right Chan?” He said, “Did you finish the homework?”

“We had homework?!” You paused in your tracks, breath seeming to stop, you’d never forgotten your homework before and you sure as hell weren’t planning on starting today

“No, we didn’t” Chan interrupted, trying to sound calm and indifferent “He’s just trying to rile you up, Y/N”

“So gullible” Minho sneered, mumbling just loud enough for you to hear

You almost jumped on him right there and then but decided maybe starting a fight in the middle of the extensive school grounds wasn’t the best idea, especially since you three were only a couple metres from your next class now. Gulping down your retorts to Minho’s spiteful behavior, you walked into the classroom, head held high, followed by Chan and then Minho. You went to the corner and sat in your usual seat, your best friend took his seat next to you and your enemy took his seat next to Chan.

After a couple minutes of hateful silence between you and Minho and Chan in the middle of it all, trying not to sweat, the teacher walked in and the chatter in the class died away.

The lesson began, as usual, with the roll, followed by the teacher introducing what was going to happen during the lesson and then followed by her actually starting it. It seemed today would be a boring lesson; a class test was coming up soon, so it was all bland theory work. You immediately took out your laptop and began making quick notes- just detailed enough for you to come back and actually understand what you were thinking while writing them. Usually you didn’t have to try all too hard in classes to get decent grades, but your and Minho’s undeclared competitions had recently moved along to academics and there was no way in hell you were going to let him surpass you.

The period ended quickly and, satisfied, with the amount of notes you’d written, you looked over to Minho before he managed to close the extravagant book he preferred to write in rather than his laptop; they were the neatest notes you’d ever seen. You were puzzled for a second, you’d never really taken Minho to be a neat person, but you quickly shook your head and began to pack up so you didn’t get left behind, not that Chan wouldn’t wait for you anyway, though.

“Do we have Chapel this afternoon?” You asked, looking to Chan as you got up from your seat; barely anyone at your school was Christian, but going to a Christian private school, chapel was compulsory

“Nah,” He said, quickly glancing to Minho as he walked out of the classroom, only saying bye to Chan on his way out, to which Chan replied with a ‘cya later’

“Oh, thank god,” You said, overdramatically placing a hand over your heart “what do we have, then?”

“I think year assembly” Chan shrugged “Let’s just go to the library, we’ll check there.”

You nodded and followed Chan out of the classroom and into the school grounds.

Your school was big- like, really big. It had five separate parts, one for k-2, one for 3-6, one for 7-8, one for 9-10 and one for 11-12, it was a bit ridiculous, and especially with the years k-6 and 7-12; they were separated across the school grounds so far that it took 15 minutes to walk between them. The grounds were full of luscious plants and large, rustic but comforting looking brick buildings; even more, there were a total of three libraries in the school. The library that years 7-12 used was so big that even you still hadn’t been everywhere in it.

After about three minutes of walking, you and Chan made it back to your guys’ lockers, put away your things (excluding your laptops) and started to walk towards the library. The library was one of the more modern-looking buildings, with windows everywhere, made of white concrete and the occasional house-plant decorating it. Inside, the library looked even bigger, decorated with ridiculous things like the giant snitch hanging on the wall behind the reception desk.

“Guys!” A deep voice came from behind you

You and Chan swung around to see Felix, waving to you from one of the biggest seminar rooms. You looked at the number it had on the front of it: ‘seminar room 3′ and went to the reception desk to sign you and Chan into it next to Felix’s, Seungmin’s, Hyunjin’s, Changbin’s, Jeongin’s, Woojin’s, Jisung’s and, unfortunately, Minho’s names.

Even though you already knew Minho would be inside the seminar room, you still groaned at the sight of him. Minho looked up and raised his eyebrows at you but quickly went back to showing Jisung something on his laptop.

“Hey, Y/N” Seungmin greeted, patting a seat next to him, “You said you wanted help with that history assignment we got, right?”

“You still haven’t finished that?” Minho interrupted, smirking evilly

“Relax, hot stuff,” Jeongin said jokingly “No one except you has finished, we got it two days ago. It’s due in three weeks”

“New watch, Woojin?” Chan said, taking a seat beside the oldest in the group

“Yeah” Woojin nodded and scooted his laptop so it was in between him and Chan instead of just in front of him. “It was a present from my aunt, I’d never wear it otherwise. Pure gold, supposedly; it’s quite heavy” Woojin frowned down at his watch; evidently, he’d been forced to wear it

You let the sound from the other eight boys in the room drown out and started your own conversation about the assignment with Seungmin, who happened to choose the same topic on it as you.

Around 40 minutes passed of you working on the assignment with Seungmin when Hyunjin stood up.

“Guys, we should get going now, don’t want to be late for the year assembly” He sighed dramatically

The rest of the members of the group stood up and followed Hyunjin out the door to the tall science building (where the lecture theatre was).

By the time you got there, a large crowd of everyone in your guys’ year had formed outside of the theatre. A short teacher came bustling through, the students automatically made a path for him to get to the door and unlock it. Once he had managed to push open the heavy entrance, people streamed through it, taking seats in the grand layered room. You and the nine other boys with you took seats at the back; seven of them streamed into the row, Chan was third last, then you, then, to your dismay, you looked back and saw Minho was walking into the row of cushioned seats to sit next to you, an unimpressed look resting on his admittedly handsome features.

Silence quickly fell over the theatre when your year co-ordinator walked into the middle of the lowered platform. She, as usual, greeted the hall and quickly went onto what was going to be happening during the following week, issues that have come up as well as congratulations on small things.

A couple minutes passed and you were half asleep when you felt Chan tap your shoulder. You looked over to your smiling best friend as he held up a discreet finger heart for you. You almost chuckled aloud, but stopped yourself and, quickly, you gave him two finger hearts in exchange. Chan scrunched up his nose in amusement and reached over to your face, tucking a stray piece of hair behind your ear. You mouthed a bashful ‘thank you’. You hadn’t noticed (Chan most certainly had) but Minho was watching everything go down, steam almost coming out of his ears. Why in the world was he feeling like this? Like he just wanted to…grab your hand and make you look at him instead of Chan, Minho wanted to be the one sending you innocent finger hearts, even though he didn’t admit it to himself. No, he couldn’t be feeling jealous, why would he need to?

Finally, after half an hour of the teacher at the front droning on about whatever it is she had to say, and half an hour of Minho sitting with his eye twitching, watching you and Chan platonically flirt, the assembly ended. The chatter immediately started up again and people went to go gather their things for last period- or go straight to their class if they had brought their things with them.

“Y/N” Minho grabbed your hand as a bunch of others passed you two, purposely losing the other eight people in your friend group, trying not to let the red on his face show

“The fuck do you want?” You asked, turning and facing him, ripping your hand away from his grip

“I-” Miho pursed his lips “Whatever. Never fucking mind” He grunted brutally, deciding that talking to you about his feelings wasn’t worth the embarrassment

You huffed and walked away from him, catching up with Changbin and Felix, who you had your next class with.

“Where’d you go?” asked Changbin when you joined the pair

“Minho held me up,” You said, trying not to frown at the statement- you couldn’t help but wonder if you’d imagined the blush that was painted across his face or not

“Minho?” Felix said skeptically “Did he finally confess his undying love for you?”

You were about to elbow Felix, except that when you turned to your friend, he didn’t seem to be joking about it at all.

“Pfft, likely story” You pulled your elbow back, deciding that maybe you could pry a bit more information out of Felix, knowing that he knew a hell of a lot more about Minho than you

“Yeah” Changbin chuckled “Chan has been trying to make Minho jealous” He looked like he had more to say, but Felix elbowed him

“He has? But…he hasn’t really been doing anything different to what we normally do”

“Well, yeah, you and Chan are already pretty platonically intimate, but he’s started doing it especially in front of Minho, haven’t you noticed?” Felix stated smartly

“Felix?” You cocked your head “Are you feeling okay? I didn’t even know you knew what half the words you just said meant”

Changbin let out a snort as he shut his locker, his stuff piled in his arms, quickly joining you and Felix with going to the last period

“Stop dodging the subject” Felix whined, “Just admit that you like Minho too!”

“Hell no” You furrowed your brows “Minho and I have been enemies since- since we were kids. I don’t have feelings for him…” You trailed off towards the end, beginning to sound unsure of even yourself

With that, you became quiet, ignoring Changbin and Felix chatting away next to you. ‘I don’t like Minho…’ you thought to yourself ‘no…I just…admire how smart and talented he is…and how good he is at dancing and singing…and how handsome he can look sometimes…holy shit I like Minho’ the very thought of it made you pause mid-step. Changbin and Felix stopped as well, turning around to check what was wrong. A few year sevens walking behind you almost bumped into you, but quickly changed their path, chattering away nervously.

“what’s up?” Changbin questioned

“Nothing…” you shook your head and kept walking, Changbin and Felix almost had to jog to keep up with your fast pace

“Y/N” Felix ran up to you, panting slightly “We weren’t going to invite you because we knew you’d probably be offended that we even thought you would want to come, but the eight of us are going to Minho’s house tonight, and you could come if you wanted”

“There’s no way Minho would want me to come” You snorted, scrunching up your nose

“But do you want to?”

“I- …no…” You said unconvincingly

“We’ll see whether he’ll let you come once class is over,” Changbin smiled, running to catch up with the pair of you as well

“Whatever,” You grunted in what you hoped to be a stoic voice

You three finally made it to the classroom where your teacher was already waiting at the front of the classroom sat behind her desk.

“Did the assembly go over time?” She asked, seeing as most of the class hadn’t shown up yet

“Yeah” Felix nodded and took his usual seat, followed by Changbin and then you

Just a few seconds passed and students began to flow into the classroom, all taking their ‘unassigned assigned seats’.

It felt as if the class barely began when it had finished, your mind had been on Minho the entire hour and for once, you didn’t take notes on what the teacher was saying- you didn’t even participate in a single class discussion, only narrowly dodging being called on by the teacher a few times.

You exited the classroom, more slouched than usual, wondering whether Minho would let you come along.

You were frowning the whole way back to the locker rooms, completely lost in your own thoughts. Everything you were doing was done absent-mindedly, unlocking your locker, packing away your things, grabbing your bag; it wasn’t until Chan tapped your shoulder that you finally came back to reality.

“Lix told me you wanted to come to Minho’s this afternoon?” He questioned

“What?! I didn’t say that!”

“Good, because I wouldn’t have let you come anyways” a snide voice interrupted from behind Chan, one that so obviously came from Minho

“Well,” Chan said, stepping aside, letting you and Minho have direct eye contact before continuing “Y/N would probably feel really left out. I’ll just skip out on your place tonight and hang with Y/N”

“Wha-?” Minho looked very taken aback, but his surprised expression was quickly replaced with that of an annoyed one “Fine, they can come,” He crossed his arms “only because I don’t want Chan to not come” Minho quickly added when you gave him a perplexed look

“Whatever, I’m only coming because I have no other plans tonight”

“tsunderes” Chan muttered under his breath

“What?” you and Minho both squinted at him suspiciously at the same time

“Nothing! Nothing” Chan defended himself, smiling in what he hoped to be an innocent fashion

After less bicker between you and Minho than the eight other boys had expected, the ten of you made your way to the school gates, being met by a black stretch limo and a sophisticated looking driver.

“Dude” Seungmin frowned at Minho “weird flex”

“What?! I don’t have another car that fits ten people” Minho said, smiling, raising his hands in defense jokingly

You almost smiled while watching Minho interact with his friends, he looked so handsome, smiling and joking carelessly with them, but you caught yourself just as the corners of your lips turned upwards.

“This is Y/N” Minho motioned to you when he talked with the driver, being much more polite than he normally would with you otherwise

“Ah, Y/N. I remember you,” The driver smiled and looked kindly to you, you smiled and waved back, you enjoyed the company of literally everyone in Minho’s family except Minho himself “The last time I saw you was when you were about eight; are you and Minho finally friends?”

“Pft- they’re not- we’re not friends- I-” Minho seemed to notice he was doing more damage to his image than good, so he hastily followed his friends into the car

“Hm. Seems Minho has a crush” The driver muttered to you as you entered the door

Without waiting for a reply, the driver left you in a flustered state to go to the driver’s seat. With a vigorous shake of your head, you entered the limo and shut the door behind you. It was incredible, like the typical millionaire limo you’d see in movies- black everywhere, basically couches instead of seats- hell, there was even a mini-fridge.

“I second Seungmin” Hyunjin came just as you sat down, looking around the car “Weird flex, Minho”

“Don’t pretend like you guys aren’t just as rich as me” Minho smiled, rubbing the back of his neck, his cheeks heating up

“Jeongin and I are here on academic scholarships, remember?” Seungmin spoke up “and Changbin is here on a music scholarship”

“Chan and I are here on music scholarships too!” Jisung yelled stubbornly, being far louder than necessary

“Yeah, but you and Chan could afford to be here without scholarships” Woojin raised a brow at Jisung

Soon enough, the car was full of chatter, you were so busy talking that you hadn’t even noticed the car had started moving and, before you could even process that the car had come to a stop, the driver opened the back door once again, telling you that you had arrived at Minho’s.

You blinked once and shook your head, soon stepping out of the limo into the surprisingly bright sunlight. In front of you stood possibly one of the biggest houses you’d ever seen- it was even bigger than yours; you had to strain your neck back just to see the top.

“Welcome to my oh-so-humble abode,” Minho said to you, ignoring the other eight boys for now since they’d already been there

“I third Seungmin,” You raised a brow, looking at Minho, unimpressed “Weird flex”

For the first time in your life, you thought you’d just caught a glimpse of Minho flashing a genuine smile directed at you, but he’d turned away before you could tell. To say it didn’t fluster you would be a complete and absolute lie; you stood there, cheeks red, refusing to believe that Minho could make you feel like this.

Finally, after a bit of a mess, the ten of your made it into Minho’s house, through the hallways that seemed almost endless, passing the far-too-big living rooms decorated with extravagant gold, silver, jewels and a couple charming house plants and up the wide marble staircase to be finally met with Minho’s room. The room was just as big as you’d expected it to be, but it was much more home-y than the rest of the house. A king-sized bed was placed in the corner, black sheets adorning it and a sweet looking wooden bedside table. There was what looked to be a gaming corner in a part of the room, a large, full-body mirror stretching across almost an entire wall and a modern but not overwhelming desk tucked away in the corner right of the entrance along with a couple bookshelves stacked with study books and keep-sakes next to it.

“That mirror is so distracting” You sighed, looking to the overly-large mirror

“It’s for dancing” Minho mumbled as he passed you, so low that you didn’t understand what he said

“Huh?”

“Nothing,” He said quickly, turning away from you with a red face

“I’ve got the switch!” Jisung shouted, running up to the array of consoles in the far corner of the room and grabbing the red, blue and black coloured Nintendo switch along with six other black controllers “Who’s playing Smash Bros with me?!”

Chan, Felix, Seungmin, Hyunjin, Changbin, Minho and Jeongin all rushed forward to grab a console, sitting on the bean-bags surrounding the corner while Woojin and you stood back, chuckling at their childishness.

“You’re not joining them, Woojin?” You asked, taking a seat on one of the spare bean-bags

“Nah, the winner of the brawl rotates out” Woojin replied, relieving his wrist of the gold watch he had around it the whole day

You nodded and watched as the boys all hastily picked out their favourite characters on the gaming console and started a brawl.

“What character do you normally pick, Y/N?” Felix asked, keeping his eyes on the screen

“Usually it’s Link” you shrugged, searching the boys’ chosen characters “the Breath of the Wild one” You added, remembering how many Links there were

“What a coincidence” Seungmin smiled mischievously as the brawl started and they all started smashing the controllers

“Minho usually chooses Zelda” Hyunjin interrupted, smirking at the large TV screen just as you’d gotten to Minho’s character

“Pfft, Zelda’s a bad character,” You said haughtily

“Not if you know how to use her properly!” Minho defended himself “Hah! See!” He said just as he’d knocked Felix (who had chosen Pikachu) off the stage

“Lucky shot!” Felix yelled as he respawned and immediately went for Minho for revenge

You laughed, completely forgetting the fact that you absolutely despised Minho in all the chaos. Only another couple minutes passed and the shouting became louder than ever; Seungmin (who had chosen Dark Pit) and Chan (who had chosen Meta Knight) were locked in a battle between each other, everyone else aside from the pair had run out of lives. Finally, after a shout of frustration and triumphant cheer, Chan lost his last life.

“catch, Y/N” Seungmin called, throwing you his controller

You quickly caught it while blinking, unaware of what was happening. You then saw Chan hand over his controller to Woojin and realized it was your turn to play. You walked forward and plopped down on the same bean bag as Jisung, who was closest to you.

“Agh! Hey, there’s no room for both of us!” Jisung whined, scrunching his nose “Just sit on my lap” He grabbed you under the arms and lifted you slightly onto his lap

“Can you see?” You asked, trying not to block your friend’s view

“Yeah” He confirmed, leaning slightly to the side while you leaned slightly to the opposite side

After that, you paid no attention to Jisung, busy changing your character from Dark Pit to Link while Jisung (who stayed as Kirby) peered around you. Minho, on the other hand, was glaring at Jisung like he never had before. ‘They could’ve just as easily sat on my bean bag’ he thought poutily to himself, glancing at you before shaking his head and turning back towards the screen just as another brawl had started.

Just for the irony of it, you immediately went for Minho’s character, still Zelda, and started fighting. The shouting quickly started up again and Minho was thrown off the edge by you, something to which he took great offense from, immediately respawning and going to attack you again. You and Minho continued your guys’ separate brawl until Jeongin (who’s character was Yoshi) interfered and managed to land a K.O move on you, considering your health percentage had gotten so high. Minho cheered and high-fived Jeongin while you frowned and respawned.

A couple more minutes and you and Minho were the only ones left. All of the boys shouting behind you seemed to be cheering on only you.

“You guys are so biased!” Minho yelled angrily “Just cause’ Y/N’s so pretty and sweet you cheer for them instead” Although his hands weren’t free, you could almost see him crossing his arms

“No, it’s because they’re a better player than you” Hyunjin (who had been Ice-Climbers) commented matter-of-factly

“You think I’m pretty and sweet?!” your jaw went slack and you were so distracted that you didn’t even bother to try and jump back up after Minho knocked your character off-screen, resulting in him winning

“What?! No! That’s not- I didn’t say-” Minho stuttered, his cheeks flushing red

“Yeah, yeah, we all know you guys have major crushes on each other, hand over the controllers” Said Seungmin, grabbing Minho’s controller from out of his hands and happily pushing Minho off of his bean-bag and taking his spot

You didn’t even process that you were absent-mindedly handing Chan the controller and sinking back into Jisung’s chest, both of whom were chuckling almost uncontrollably from your bewildered state.

“Alright Y/N, up” Jisung pushed you off his lap, toward the spare bean-bag where Minho had taken a seat, still puffy “Now that I’m free of my handi-cap, you fuckers are going down!” He yelled

You and Minho made quick eye-contact. He puffed out his cheeks and moved to the side of the bean-bag, making free space for you. You raised your eyebrows but nonetheless, took the seat next to him, trying to get comfortable without making skin contact with your self-proclaimed enemy, but it proved to be quite difficult with how much the bean-bag was moving.

“Sorry” You muttered, aware that by now, Minho was probably beginning to get annoyed

When he didn’t reply, you looked up to him, yet again, you two made eye contact for a split second. Minho’s eyes widened and his face turned even more red. He quickly averted his gaze to the screen, most of your guys’ friends had died by now and were instead cheering on Changbin (who was playing with Samus), Seungmin and Jeongin.

An hour must have passed, but you and Minho didn’t move from the bean-bag unless it was to retrieve the controller from the two that had been the last in the brawl, which was followed by you guys immediately going back to the same bean-bag to sit next to the other. You had no idea which round it had happened, but one time when you got up and went back to the bean-bag, Minho pulled you into his lap before you got the chance to sit next to him, and the next time Minho had to get up, you sat back down and made Minho sit in your lap, and it changed like that depending on who had to get up. Neither of you seemed to notice that everyone else in the room stared at the pair of you in shock each time it happened.

“You two…” Chan shook his head, smiling to himself

“What?” You looked up from your place on top of Minho’s lap

“Huh?” Minho peered around you to look at Chan

“What happened to hating each other?” Jeongin teased

You and Minho paused, faces growing red. Neither of you answered, just looked down, not willing to take your gazes off of the ground, even though Felix had just taken your last life in the game.

Finally, after it grew dark, you guys turned off the TV and console, leaving it and the controllers for a charge.

“There are uh…” Minho looked to his fingers and began to count on them “six bathrooms upstairs, not including my parents’ en suite. So…which of us are going to shower first?”

“Fuck- I didn’t bring clothes” You face-palmed, only now remembering that you’d been invited to the ‘sleep-over’ unexpectedly, and hadn’t brought any supplies to school with you

“You can borrow my hoodie,” Chan said

“I brought spare sweat-pants, actually,” Seungmin said

“I’ve got another t-shirt” Hyunjin rummaged around in his bag

“Would offering you a pair of fox socks be weird? They’re fluffy” Jeongin questioned cutely

“I don’t think any of us have spare undies” Seungmin looked around with a raised eyebrow

“You can borrow Minho’s boxers” Changbin chuckled, joining in

“Wha-” you blushed

“I mean, it’s probably the best option if we’re being completely honest” Woojin added, fighting back an amused smile “You do clean your boxers, don’t you, Minho?”

“Of course I do!” Minho said, looking fairly offended “But lending them to someone else- isn’t that a bit unsanitary…?”

“I mean I’m sure it’s fine between…romantic partners” Jisung smirked, raising his eyebrows suggestively

“Shutup” Minho glared at his friend

Despite his initial protests, he walked over to his overly-large cupboard, opened it, and got out a pair of plain black boxers. The entire group ‘ooh-ed’, all except for you.

“This is actually happening? We’re actually doing this? …jesus christ…” You tried not to laugh as Minho reluctantly threw the boxers at you and pointed to his en-suite

Trying not to die of embarrassment, you walked into the bathroom while the other nine boys sorted out which five would be showering first, followed by Minho showing them where the other bathrooms were.

Not too long after, everyone had showered and the ten of you gathered in a circle.

“Let’s play truth or dare” Seungmin smiled- it would look sweet if you didn’t know any better

“I’m down” Hyunjin agreed, a chorus of agreements sounded throughout the group

“Me first,” Minho said quickly “Felix, truth or dare?”

“Dare, obviously,” He said in his deep voice

“In the next room over, there’s a balcony where you can jump safely into the pool from. I’ve done it before.” Minho paused dramatically “I dare you to jump from the balcony in your PJ’s into the pool”

“What?! I’ve already showered!” Felix complained

“Fine, you can take off your shirt” Minho reasoned, still smiling

Felix opened his mouth to protest, but nothing came out, so he stood up, the group following him, exited the room and proceeded to march to the room next to Minho’s.

“Other way, idiot” Minho said from the group

Felix bashfully changed directions and went into the other room, which was similar to the rest of the house, so unlike Minho’s comforting room. The balcony doors were glass and Felix quickly stripped himself of his shirt and socks and stepped out onto the balcony. The drop wasn’t far, it was like a diving board, the only catch, you supposed, was that Felix would have to shower again, and probably steal a pair of Minho’s pants.

Without another thought, Felix dived into the pool, creating a big splash.

“IT’S FUCKING FREEZING” Felix yelled once he resurfaced, quickly wading his way to the edge of the pool and pulling himself out

The group chuckled while Woojin shook his head. Minho threw a towel at Felix which he grabbed and wrapped around himself.

“The door inside is over there” Minho pointed to the left “you know your way around this house. Seeya in a bit”

“Seeya” Felix waved, ruffling his wet hair to hopefully dry it a bit so he didn’t completely soak the carpet inside

The rest of the group walked back to Minho’s room and rearranged themselves in a circle, leaving an empty space for Felix.

“Wait….we have to wait for Felix to get back so he can ask the next person,” Changbin said, scrunching his nose

“I’ll go!” Chan interrupted, looking rather amused “Minho, truth or dare?”

“uh- dare” Minho hesitated, knowing that if he said truth, he’d be asked whether he had feelings for you

“I dare you to kiss the cutest person in the room”

“Pft- easy” Minho smirked again, standing up

“Other than yourself!” Chan quickly added when he saw Minho making his way to the large mirror behind him

Minho groaned and turned to face the group just as Felix had walked in, looking rather cold and, without even asking, went into Minho’s closet, grabbed a pair of pants and made his way to the en-suite with his dry shirt and socks and- somehow- another pair of his own underwear.

“I smoke all you bitches” Minho stated “but if I must, Jisung come here”

Jisung raised his eyebrows, whispering a ‘what the fuck’ to himself, staying seated.

“Don’t lie to yourself, Minho” Woojin leaned forward “we all know you think it’s Y/N-”

“Yeah” Hyunjin intercepted before Woojin could finish his sentence “it’s obviously me. Have you seen this face?” He cupped his face in his own hands and gave a charming smile to the group

Minho looked over to Hyunjin, unimpressed.

“Okay, change of dare” Chan stated before a fight over who the cutest in the group is broke out…again “I dare you, Minho, to kiss Y/N”

“damn” Changbin snorted

“just straight up? How bold of you, Chan” Minho glared at his friend

Chan smirked, maintaining eye contact with Minho. None of the group seemed to notice that, in the corner, your entire face was shining red. You had tried to distract yourself from the situation by focusing on the running water of the shower that Felix was using, but your brain hated you and that started to lead to images of Felix you didn’t want, you quickly moved on from that. ‘I wonder how jealous Minho would get if he found out that I was unintentionally picturing Felix showering’ you thought to yourself, and the thought of Minho being jealous seemed enough to distract you.

“Y/N?” Minho turned to you

“huh?!” You snapped out of your thoughts

“come here” Minho motioned you towards him

“How about you come here?” You scrunched up your nose, ignoring your oh-so-obvious blush

Minho, ignoring his own ‘oh-so-obvious blush’ silently got up and walked towards you. The entire group watched with bated breath. The room was completely silent, Felix seemed to have stopped showering now and was drying off, so not even the sound of water running could distract anyone. Minho cupped the side of your cheek, his palm and fingers were surprisingly cold, but you could practically feel the heat radiating off of his face from all the blood rushing to his cheeks.

“so…” Minho started, breaking the silence, and the group finally seemed to be able to breathe again “can I kiss you?”

“…yeah”

And with your confirmation, Minho leant forward and placed his lips onto yours, immediately pulling away afterward. The seven people around you erupted into a mixture of cheers, ooh’s and fake gags. Felix came barrelling out of the bathroom, beckoned by the sudden uproar, his shirt still wasn’t fully on and he looked extremely confused.

“What happened?!” He asked, finally putting his arms through the last hole

“Y/N and Minho finally fUCKING kissed!” Jisung yelled

“They did WHAT?! AND YOU GUYS DIDN’T BOTHER TO TELL ME TO HURRY UP SO I COULD WITNESS THE MOMENT?!” He looked utterly distraught at the news that he’d missed something so ‘important’

The group burst into chuckles, snorts and giggles. Minho and you hadn’t made eye contact since the kiss, although, it was so short that you weren’t even sure it could be considered a kiss; that fact didn’t seem to trouble the group though.

“Oi Felix!” Minho yelled, and once again, the group turned silent

Minho grinned before turning towards you again, his cocky smile faltered slightly when he made eye contact with you, but before he could turn back, he went in an kissed you again.

“OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH” Felix whooped

“truly a moment to behold” Chan shook his head comically, along with Woojin

Your mouth hung open slightly, just out of surprise that Minho had kissed you again.

“You should’ve asked first!” You pushed him away, angry that he had the ability to make you so flustered

“Sorry” Minho smiled sweetly and rubbed the back of his neck

Eventually, the ten of you moved on from the kiss and continued with the game, which ended in Hyunjin almost being brought to tears from eating an entire spoonful of hot sauce, Changbin confessing that he did, in fact, steal Jeongin’s socks, more than once, Seungmin coming very close to accidentally knocking Jisung over the head with a baseball bat, Chan admitting that he had slept in Seungmin’s bed before purely to annoy him and then blamed it on Felix, and Woojin baking cupcakes for everyone (one of the more tame dares) and far more, too much to explain.

Finally, when it came time to sleep, which was well past midnight, you and Minho slept on a spare mattress together, arms tangled and sharing warmth between the two of you. It was, you felt, the most content you’d ever been in your life.

Future Interior Designer

* I believe I am in over my head for this one. It’s been a while since I wrote an actual story that wasn’t scripted. I’ll probably continue this but I don’t know... besides that, I hope you enjoy it...

Marinette wonders how this came to be. Her room, once full of life, now appears to be lifeless and dull. Pictures of her friends no longer hang above her desk, only designs. She licks her lips and gently rests her right hand on the desk, tearfully she picks up the photos. Nothing felt right. As the photo of Alya and her stare back, Marinette tosses the photos in a wastebasket. Tikki pops her head, lips pursed with concern.

“Are you sure you want to do this, Marinette.” She speaks as more pictures are thrown away. Marinette sighs as the last of the photos land in the basket.

“Yes Tikki, I am.” She murmurs as her hands, balls closer to her chest. “I think it’s time for a change. Don’t you agree?” Her sight focuses on Tikki. Tikki smiles softly and hugs her chosen.

Marinette scans the lower level of her room, closing her eyes, she turns to the trap door and walks forward. As she runs down the stairs, she sees her parents in the kitchen in the middle of a conversation.

“Maman…papa…” Marinette softly speaks. Sabine cuts off the conversation and turns towards her daughter. Her face is plastered with concern as mama bear takes over. “Is there by any chance I update my room. I don’t feel comfortable in it anymore with everything that has been happening.”

Sabine and Tom have noticed the change in their daughter demeanor of the past few months and stare at one another. Sabine comforts her daughter and whispers, “Of course, I know a customer that deals with interior designing…do you want me to call her?”

Marinette looks up at her mother in aghast. Nodding, Sabine knew her daughter’s answer. She motions for her husband to grab the phone. Tom obeys his wife and goes to find the house phone. Marinette smiles as she knows how supportive her parents are for her.

“While I make that call, why don’t you get some rest and we’ll talk about what’s been going later when dinner is finished. Are you fine with that?” Sabine asked Marinette nods knowing that she wouldn’t be able to hide her issue any longer. Sabine places a gentle kiss on her daughter’s forehead and breaks the hug.

Marinette disappears back to her room.

When Tom returned, he hands the phone over to Sabine who instantly puts in the puts the phone number of Aimée Pierre, a local interior designer that was located near Paris, to use. As the call ends, Sabine smiles to her husband and embraces him.

“I hope everything will turn up alright.” Sabine sighs, exhaustion was slowly taking a toll on the youthful mother.

Tom kisses his wife's cheek. “Let’s go check on our little muffin.” Sabine smiles.

When the two went upstairs to their daughter’s room, they too notice the lack of personality of their daughter. Sabine's heart breaks for her daughter, leaving her wishing she notice the changes sooner and spoke up about it. Tom didn’t feel any better, either, this is his baby girl, his light in the darkness, their everyday ladybug despite the hardships she deals with.

Sabine goes over to their sleeping daughter on the chaise. Marinette stirs awake and hugs her mother. Sabine holds her daughter like her life depended on it. Tom joins in. The small family embraces the silence not noticing the small kwami smiling brightly at them.

Marinette tells them almost everything: how Lila basically turn her class against her, how Alya chose to exclude her from events and hangout then demanded to know why she wasn’t there, how Adrien told to remain quiet as Lila wasn’t hurting anyone, how she was almost akumatised not once but twice. Marinette was in tears and was letting everything out.

Sabine and Tom couldn’t believe this. Their daughter was going through so much and not a single person acted on it.

“Marinette, honey, have you thought about switching classes or even schools?” Tom couldn’t help but questioned as his wife was seething in fury.

Marinette shook her head; it was clear that she wasn’t thinking about that. Tom pursed his lips as he looks around his daughter’s room for inspiration.

“How about we see how this week goes and before the new semester starts, we figure something out.” He suggests. It was then that Sabine looks at her husband in disbelief.

“Are you kidding me? No, once this project is done, I will march right up to the school and demand that they change your classes and if that doesn’t work then we’re going to pull you out.” Sabine was furious. Not only was the school ignoring their student, mainly her daughter’s mental health and education, they were falling into the hands of Lila Rossi.

“No, I’ll stick it through.” Marinette rejects. She knows that her parents will do anything for her, and the new room design was enough for her.

Sabine was conflicted, she knows her daughter can handle herself, but she doesn’t know for how long. Everyone has a breaking point and Marinette was nearing her breaking point if the room design wasn’t a clue enough.

“Fine, but the moment you break, you are leaving Collège Françoise Dupont.” Sabine counters, as Tom nods in agreement.

Marinette smiles and hugs her parents. This was the best news she heard in the past week.

“Merci, Maman.” She says as tears threaten to fall down her face.

To say the least, Marinette was grateful that she doesn’t have school tomorrow as it was the weekend.

The next day, Marinette woke up early. Tikki hovers beside her chosen as Marinette was choosing an outfit for the day.

“Marinette, why don’t you wear what you usually wear?” Tikki questions out of curiosity.

Marinette sets the outfits down and looks at her kwami with a bright smile. “It’s because I’m meeting with the interior designer, Maman spoke about. And I like to look nice for once, Tikki.”

Tikki hugs Marinette regardless. Marinette tries on different outfits until she chose pink overalls with a white t-shirt. After deciding on the clothes, Marinette runs out of her room and into the living room, where Sabine was talking to a taller woman with dark long hair, dressed in business casual like clothing.

“Marinette, this is Mlle Pierre, Aimee this is my daughter Marinette.” Sabine introduces.

Aimee stares down at Marinette, analyzing her before she spoke, “I assume you are a fashion designer Marinette, and if that is so…we have much to discuss.”

Marinette stares aghast at the woman in front of her as Sabine chuckles in the background.

I hope everyone’s been having a nice holiday over the past week! My family and I had a quiet Christmas and now we’re enjoying a quiet few days until New Years.

During this time, I’ve gotten a lot of translating done! I’m finished with this first story in ISGS (what you’re reading now), and have moved onto the second story. The more I can do over the next few days, the less time it’ll take me to get the next story up, so I’m working hard!

There are only three parts to this first story, so next week will be the conclusion.

Red Data Girl: Ice Shoes, Glass Shoes By Noriko Ogiwara Story One: The Puppet Show- Miyuki Sagara- Third Year of Middle School- Start of Summer Part 2

Miyuki had been accepted into Keibun Academy in the summer of his first year of middle school. At the time, he had been participating in the “fall training session” on Mt. Haguro, one of the three sacred Dewa Mountains in Yamagata Prefecture.

As the acceptance had come without forewarning and Miyuki had been so caught up in his training at the time, he couldn’t remember much of getting the news except for a vague memory of mixed feelings. It had felt like he would get left behind if he wasn’t with his uncle Harunobu Sengoku. While Keibun Academy was an elite school, his acceptance didn’t feel like something he could brag about.

The day the acceptance had arrived, Miyuki had been days into his training regimen. He chanted sutras from midnight to dawn, then walked through the mountains during the day, barely sleeping, eating, or drinking. The routine had been grueling and had no apparent rhyme or reason, but during those days, he had come to understand one thing. It was shocking to know that Yukimasa came to a sacred mountain to do training like this even once every two years.

Yukimasa actually wants to do this?...

Miyuki had known that traveling around the mountain without sleep or food was part of the religious training that he was partaking in. What he hadn’t been able to handle, however, was giving up water. During the training, the participants completely forsook washing—their face, their teeth, everything. It had felt like breaking society’s rules.

There are plenty of people out there who say appearance is everything, but then they go around doing all sorts of unclean things. But Yukimasa?...

Whenever Miyuki thought about this, he could not imagine his clean-cut father going through the training. He would never do something with such questionable benefits. But that was what made Yukimasa such an unreadable person.

When Miyuki had gone to school after completing his ascetic training, normal life had somehow felt like watching a shadow puppet show. He hadn’t been able to fit in with his classmates who knew they were elite. That had been frustrating, but by the time he had realized why he was so frustrated, those feelings had grown to an unbearable level.

I’m only interacting with narrow-minded people who live narrow-minded lives here at this school. Everyone here looks like me, but that doesn’t mean that I’m the same as them deep down.

Once Miyuki had started thinking that way, things had quickly gotten a lot better. In the two years he had spent at Keibun Academy, he had become one of the most academically recognized students in the school. And the students around Miyuki had done their best to ignore his skillfully aimed sarcastic remarks.

But I can’t even compare Awatani Middle School, way up here in the mountains, to Keibun Academy…

Miyuki didn’t want to be here. He was only following Yukimasa’s instructions because of his father’s violence. But that didn’t change the fact that his present situation was attending Awatani Middle School along with Izumiko and the other students from the area, and being chauffeured back and forth by Mr. Nonomura. The current problem was how well was going to manage in this new school environment as a transfer student who had come out of nowhere.

Miyuki could tell that there was a laidback atmosphere to Awatani Middle School and that plenty of its students seemed oblivious to the world outside of their town. He couldn’t help but scoff at the fact that the school only had one class per grade as well. With so few students in the school, it probably wouldn’t take long for them to see through his forced demeanor. The groups of friends who had welcomed him at the beginning would start excluding him eventually. It was easy for Miyuki, who had transferred schools many times before this, to predict what would happen.

Or maybe I should start acting more laidback, too. I already finished the middle school third year textbooks at Keibun… I don’t have to study here. I don’t even have a desk in my room…

He also considered using everything he had learned at Keibun to make himself look smart and cool as a strategy to fitting in. That was new and novel to him as well.

Izumiko Suzuhara was with Miyuki for the car ride to school, although she appeared to be sitting as close to the opposite door from him as possible. As always, she sat there silent with her hands clasped on her lap, her eyes gazing out the window.

If he was going to have any fun thinking over his plans for fitting in, he would have to make peace with the knowledge that Izumiko would remain like that next to him for the entirety of the trip.

He would also have to make peace with the fact that Yukimasa had told him that he would serve this girl.

Because Miyuki and Izumiko were dropped off and picked up from school, they could never hang out with friends after class.

Miyuki could understand Izumiko’s embarrassment over the situation, but he decided to make the best of things and spend quality time with his classmates during lunch break instead. There was no reason for him to do nothing.

With so few students at Awatani, the number of clubs was limited. As a result, there wasn’t a soccer club. Instead, the more rough and tumble boys in their third year, Youhei Misaki, Tomoya Ogawa, and Kazuto Seya, went out onto the school field during lunch and kicked around a soccer ball as “practice,” claiming the lack of a club as an excuse. Miyuki had joined them.

Youhei and the others were under the impression that Miyuki had come from some sort of genius school where he had done nothing but study his entire life. He could be just as aggressive as anyone else though.

Those guys have absolutely no idea that I’ve been training to be a monk.

Everything Youhei and the others did was so opposite of how the Keibun students had conducted themselves that it was laughable. It would have been useless to say so to them, however. Instead, Miyuki had thrown himself whole heartedly into their lifestyle. If he felt at all ridiculous for hiding parts of his personality, surrounding himself with such wild students had kept him from noticing.

When Miyuki had first arrived at the school, he had noticed Youhei and his group scoping him out. In response, he had decided that a few minor changes to his demeaner were necessary to fully attract their friendship. With that said, while he kicked the ball around with them each day, he quickly forgot any misgivings he had originally had about doing so. Even if it had taken some adjustment, they were fun to hang out with.    

…So, I guess being a monk in training has become part of my hidden identity as well.

That felt a little strange, even to him, but it felt like more than a strategy for getting along in a new place. It felt like giving into the real him. Suddenly, Miyuki had friends that he could run around and blow off steam with. He could forget all the things that were upsetting him when he was with Youhei and the others.

That day, when he came back in from the school’s field after lunch and returned to his desk, Misa Koshikawa, the student president, came over.

“Miyuki,” she said self-importantly. “This is just a suggestion, but you shouldn’t lower yourself to Youhei’s pace. He’s trouble, and he never studies. If anyone’s going to fail the Sototsugawa High School entrance exam, it’ll be him, and they take anyone.”

Miyuki smiled at her. “So? I haven’t had time to study lately, either. It’s fine.”

Misa’s eyes went wide, clearly making some sort of assumption from his words.

“You don’t even think your parents would let you go to a trade school?”

“No, probably not.”

“…Is your family struggling that much?”

It looked like he was going to make her cry. Miyuki considered saying something along the lines of having been forced to transfer out of Keibun Academy because he hadn’t been able to afford the tuition.

When he didn’t answer immediately, Misa continued talking. “Don’t give up. If you keep taking your studies seriously, I’m sure you’ll find a way to go to high school. You could find a scholarship system if you did some research or something. I’m cheering for you, Miyuki.”

While thinking that the conversation had been very one sided, Miyuki wasn’t sure how much to correct the conclusion she had come to. He supposed that if he could get on this girl’s good side, the quality of his school life would probably improve.

“You don’t have to worry about me.”

“That’s a lie. I do have to worry about you. Your shirt’s ripped. That wouldn’t have happened if you weren’t hanging out with Youhei.”

Misa pointed a finger at him and he noticed for the first time that the sleeve of his short-sleeved button up was torn at the shoulder seam.

“Oh. Shoot.”

He thought about what would happen when Sawa saw the rip. Dismay colored his face. It wasn’t like he had other shirts he could wear instead.

“Poor Miyuki,” Misa said, her voice full of pity. But then she abruptly turned and went back to her seat. No doubt, she thought she was playing the role of a heroine.

Poor me, huh?...

Feeling a little weary from the whole encounter, it seemed somewhat impressive that someone would feel badly for him. Maybe it was a point of view he should consider as well as he crafted his identity here at Awatani Middle School. Maybe he really was a desperate third year middle school boy worth feeling badly for. However, he would have been more grateful to have his shirt repaired than to receive pity. Misa didn’t seem to be that sort of person though.

She’s not very helpful, is she?

Once Miyuki had noticed it a little and begun observing, it had been easy to see that the third year girls were split into two groups. Misa Koshikawa led one group while the other leader was Ayumi Watanabe. Ayumi was the tallest girl in class and, unsurprisingly, was the captain of the girls’ basketball team. Izumiko was part of this group. It seemed that Ayumi and Haruna Mita protected her from Misa.

From Miyuki’s perspective, Ayumi was a more sensible student than Misa. If nothing else, she had a determination to her that he liked. Her hair was cut short in a boyish style, and she had straight forward, no nonsense personality that was appealing.

If I started hanging out with Ayumi and Haruna, I wonder if Izumiko would start feeling differently about me…

However, Miyuki didn’t talk much to girls. He usually only talked to the ones who came up to him. Things were different in this class, though. It seemed like the boys were the ones who liked to go and talk to the girls and that was the way it had always been. As a result, Miyuki had never talked to Ayumi before.

Halloween Trick

A/N I love writing the creepy, spooky, and angst-riddled, which makes October and Halloween an exciting time for me. I had several prompts come in that sort of melded together into this one shot. It started with a request from @endlessly-searching-for-you “What God awful demon possessed you to wear that?” “There will be a lot of screaming tonight.” and “The legend said it only goes after virgins...so sucks to be you I guess.” Right after her request came in I got one from @choicesfan44 for a heated argument between Chris x Aria/MC, followed by an anonymous one for them to go to a haunted house. How could I not combine those three requests together? Especially since Braidwood Manor is nearby.

Uncertainty flickered across eighteen year old Aria Forbes pretty features as she studied her reflection in the full length mirror that was fixed to the back of her closet door. She barely recognized the creature staring back; which was the point she supposed since it was Halloween. “You need to let your hair down Ari,” her best friend Kaitlyn had told her. “Like, literally let your hair down. And it won't kill you to let Abbie do your make up. You've moped over Chris long enough.” It had been futile to protest because deep down Aria knew Kaitlyn was right, she had spent the last two months either crying or moping around over some guy that had ditched her for a sorority girl who put out. Silently acknowledging that Kaitlyn was right didn't keep Aria from wanting to just spend the evening curled up with a feel good romance novel that made her forget her bruised ego and cracked heart. In the end, she had caved under pressure and quietly sat on a stool while Kaitlyn did something with her long brown hair and Abbie, like the artist she was, transformed her face from fresh faced to sultry. She'd even submitted to putting on the over sized orange sweatshirt with a jack-o-lantern face printed on the front that Kaitlyn insisted counted as a costume. Now, as she stood before the mirror, staring at the end result, she doesn't know if she can go through with whatever plans Kaitlyn cooked up. She wanted to wipe the make up off, exchange the Halloween sweatshirt for the old flannel shirt she'd stolen from her dad, and hide under the covers.

“Don't even think about it,” Abbie warned from the doorway, her arms crossed over chest and her eyes steely with determination. “I am not going to be stuck partaking in whatever Halloween hi-jinx Kaitlyn has planned without some back up.”

“I don't like Halloween,” Aria sighed. She turned away from the mirror and strode across the room to plop down on her bed. “Do you know  how many times bigger kids stole my candy? Or how many parties I was intentionally excluded from in high school?” Her nose wrinkled up at the unpleasant memories. In grade school she had been the smallest and the slowest, which made her an easy target for the bigger, meaner kids out to steal as much candy as possible. In junior high and school she had been persona non grata thanks to her mom being the high school principal; nobody wanted to date, befriend, or invite Mrs. Forbes precious daughter. To say her formative years had been lonely was an understatement. It was probably why she latched on to her suite mates as quickly as she had. Especially Chris Powell. Her cheeks flushed, thinking of the fool she'd mad of herself over him. Their first night in the suite she had let Kaitlyn talk her into a drinking game that had led to her inviting Chris back to her room. She'd been just drunk enough to make a complete fool of herself by rambling about her pathetic high school experience and how she was probably the only virgin in her graduating class. The V word had been like throwing ice water on Chris. He'd gone form hot and heavy to Mr. Cuddly.

“Girl, you're preaching to the choir. The last time I went out on Halloween I ended up covered in what I pray was fake blood and not something those assholes picked up from the butcher shop.” A visible shudder rippled through Abbie's slender body. “My parents used to try to make me take my younger sister...childhood experiences and memories...” she paused to roll her eyes, “but we usually found some church having a fall festival and then hit up Wal-mart for a bag of mixed candy so mom wouldn't question us.”

Bending slightly at the waist, Aria tugged on the black above the knee socks Kaitlyn had given to her when she'd forced the sweatshirt. Apparently they, too, were part of the so called costume. The only thing Aria could figure out was she was supposed to be some sort of sexy pumpkin. Didn't Kaitlyn realize pumpkins weren't sexy? “Think we can get away with talking Kaitlyn into something similar?”

“Yeah right.” Abbie rolled her soft brown eyes before moving to stand in front of the mirror. She leaned forward, patting her middle finger next to her eye where a clump of glitter had settled. “She's not in it for the candy, she's in for the scare. I overheard Zack telling Tyler that she was bragging about knowing  how to get into Braidwood Manor.”

“Braidwood Manor?” A chill rippled down Aria's spine. Why did that name sound so familiar?

“Yeah. It's this abandoned estate about fifteen minutes from here. Supposedly its haunted.” Abbie continued to pat at the glitter, spreading it up into her hairline. If Aria was a sexy pumpkin, then Abbie was a sweet ghost with a fetish for glitter. “And supposedly that's where we're all going tonight.”

“We?” Aria's heart lurched and a familiar panic started tightening in her chest. Please don't let Chris or Becca be part of that we. For about five seconds Aria had thought Chris liked her, that maybe just maybe a boy was looking at her and actually seeing her. Ha. What an idiot she had been. The same night she worked up her courage to tell him that she liked him, he hooked up with the blonde bitch that had dumped iced coffee on her the first day of the semester. Becca Davenport, president of some stupid sorority that wore too much pink and so beautiful it hurt. Chris had wasted no time in sliding in Becca's designer silk sheets, leaving Aria confused, heart broken, and a pathetic mess that cried at night when she thought her suite mates were sleeping. College was turning out to be another round of high school.

“Yeah. And before you ask...I don't know who all that entails. I think half of Hartfeld goes. Its sort of a right of passage. Seeing which students last the longest.” Abbie turned from the mirror, a sympathetic look on her face. “If they do show up, maybe we can push her down a set of stairs and blame it on a ghost.”

Aria let out a small laugh. “We can't do that Abbie.”

“Uh, yeah, we can. Bitch has it coming. She's a heinous troll.”

“Whose a heinous troll?” Kaitlyn demanded. She breezed into the room in a cloud of colored hair spray and Victoria Secret's Love Spell. “Ohh. Wait. Let me guess.” She cocked her head to the side, chewing black lip stick off her lower lip. “You wouldn't happen to be talking about Becca would you?”

“What gave it away? Heinous, troll, or bitch?”  There was no ignoring the sarcasm in Abbie's voice or the tension that was crunching up her features. “Seriously, Kait, if that bitch is there...”

Kaitlyn chewed off the remainder of her lipstick, her gaze dropping to the floor before darting up to meet Aria's. “Look, I didn't invite either of them but I can't guarantee that they won't show. Darren knows, plus going to Braidwood Manor on Halloween is a Hartfeld tradition.”

Swallowing the lump of dismay that was threatening to form in her throat, Aria forced a wobbly smile. “Who cares about Chris and Becca? They deserve each other.” The words tasted sour on her tongue, a lie she told herself to ease the pain of rejection. It seldom worked and now was no exception. Despite his unholy attraction to Becca 'Queen Bitch' Davenport, Chris was a nice guy. He deserved better than the blonde viper he was currently sleeping with.

“That's the spirit!” Kaitlyn exclaimed clapping her hands together in excitement. “Okay, let me put on some more lipstick and we can blow this joint.” An excited squeal followed her out the door.

“You're getting better,” Abbie murmured. “I almost believed you this time.” Aria opened her mouth to deny the accusation but let her lip fall into a sad smile. What was the point in arguing against a truth she had just acknowledged herself? “And my offer to be the friendly ghost that does the world a favor by pushing her down a staircase still stands.”

A real smile spread across Aria's lips as she hooked her arm through Abbie's and motioned for her other best friend to lead the way. “Shall we see if that opportunity arises?”

“We shall,” Abbie laughed. Her laugh faltered when they entered the living area of their suite and found Chris chatting with Tyler while Becca stood nearby with a scowl fixed on her face. “Great,” she muttered. Aria started to pull back, to retreat to her room and lock the door. “Oh hell no,” Abbie whispered, “I'm not going to let you give that bitch the satisfaction of you running and hiding.”

“I don't think I can deal with her tonight,” Aria pleaded. She tugged her arm, trying to free herself from Abbie's grip but it was pointless. The other girl had an iron grip.

“There will be a lot of screaming tonight,” Zack squealed, his eyes shining bright with a feverish sort of excitement. “A guy in my lit class said you can practically hear the ghosts of the children crying out for help. Can you imagine...being murdered by your own mother because she wanted to protect you?” Chris responded with something Aria couldn't hear over the buzzing in her ears. Why did he have to look so good? His tall, athletic form was garbed in the traditional Grease T Bird uniform of dark washed jeans, white t shirt, and black leather jacket. Of course Becca was dressed to perfection as a Pink Lady. It was enough to make Aria gag.

“Ew.” Becca let out a sneer, her full lips twisting into a ugly grimace that made her look a lot like the heinous troll Abbie insisted she was. “What god awful demon possessed you to wear that?” It took Aria a moment to realize that she was the one Becca was talking to. “Would their name happen to be Abbie?”

“Actually,” Kaitlyn cleared her throat, “I'm the one who picked it out and I happen to think she looks amazing.” The smaller, petite girl strode over and wrapped an arm around Aria's waist. A defiant look crossed her face. “Don't you agree Chris? Doesn't Aria look amazing?”

“Yeah,” Chris answered softly, his blue eyes colliding with Aria's. For a moment the connection Aria had felt that first night sparked to life, holding them hostage.

“Whatever. It's not like she's going to last long at Braidwood Manor.” Becca rolled her eyes. A wicked grin stretched across her pink lips. “The house, specifically the mother, loves girls like Aria.”

“What's that supposed to mean,”Abbie demanded.

“Oh. Haven't you heard. One of the things the mother was trying to protect her precious daughters from was the wicked, delights of the flesh. She couldn't stand the idea of her innocent daughters succumbing to lust. So... she protected them by killing them. So now that's what the house craves.” Her grin spread even further as she leaned forward, her gaze fixed on Aria. “The legend says it only goes after virgins...so sucks to be you I guess.”

It felt as though ice cold water had been thrown on Aria. Everything in her froze. How the hell did Becca know that she was a virgin? And then it hit her. Chris. Chris had told Becca about that first night and how Aria had chickened out on having sex because she wanted her first time to be special. “You're such a fucking asshole,” she screamed, blood rushing to her pale cheeks. “I can't believe I ever thought you were...” Her lower lip started to tremble and the room started to blur. She could hear Becca laughing. Abbie threatening to punch someone's lights out. And Kaitlyn...Kaitlyn was rubbing small circles on her back, telling her it was going to be alright. Aria jerked away. “It's not going to be alright,” she sobbed. “I'm sick to death of not feeling good enough, of people acting like there's something wrong with me because I don't...I'm not...I'm not Becca.” She spun around to glare at Chris. “I trusted you. I thought you were at least my friend. Turns out you're just like her!” She jabbed a finger at Becca.

“And what would that be Aria? Beautiful? Popular?”

It took every ounce of her will power not to walk across the living room and smack Becca across the face. “No, an empty shell of a human being who makes up for her own short comings by trying to make others feel bad about themselves.”

“I'm not...that isn't me,” Chris protested.

Aria snorted. “Right.” She pushed past Abbie and yanked open the door to the stairs that led up to the roof. Her feet thundered against the wood, her eyes burning as her tears liquefied her mascara and eyeliner. She let out a gasp as the cool autumn air hit her, a strong gust of wind pushing her hair off her face. Wrapping her arms around her middle she ignored her chattering teeth and stood staring out across campus. Students of all ages were running around in various forms of costumes, laughing and having a good time. If not for Becca, she would have been one of them. It was pathetic that she was letting one person ruin her night but that was her middle name: Aria “Pathetic” Forbes. She let out a sound of disgust. Was this really the person she wanted to continue to be?

“Can we talk?”

Her body stiffened at the sound of Chris's voice.  She should have known that he would follow her outside. It seemed to be a pattern. Becca would make her feel like crap, she would run off and Chris would follow. In the past she had used it as an opportunity to beg him to pick her, to choose her. He never did. His loyalty to Becca was baffling. “You're the last person I want to talk to,” she bit out, tightening her arms around her middle. Her fingers twisted into the soft fabric of Kaitlyn's sweatshirt. “Why don't you go run your mouth to Becca some more. You seem to be good at that.”

“That's fair,” Chris sighed. “But I'm not going anywhere until we talk. Not until you let me apologize.”

“What is there to talk about?” Her fingers twisted tighter into the fabric, pulling at it. “Every chance she gets, Becca makes my life a living hell. A lot of times right in front of you. And you're either too blind to see it or you just don't care. Either way, don't you dare stand there apologizing for sharing personal information with someone who openly hates me.” Untangling her right hand, Aria reached up and wiped at her cheeks, grimacing at the smears of black that were left on her fingertips. She could only imagine the mess her face was. All of Abbie's hard work down the drain. “You know,” she whispered, “I am sick to death of being made to feel bad for being nice or wanting to wait for the right person.”

“There's nothing wrong with being nice or waiting Ari.” His voice was closer, so close she could feel the heat radiating off his body. “I need you to know I didn't tell Becca. Not directly. Darren and I were talking about why I pulled back from you. I told him I didn't want to hurt you, that I'm not in a good place for a serious relationship and that's what you deserve. I didn't want to be that guy who took advantage or for you to look back and regret your first time because you threw it away on a guy who doesn't know what he wants.”

His words cut to the quick. It would have hurt less if he had told her that he had intentionally told Becca. “You need to leave,” she whispered. “You say you don't want to hurt me but you being here, telling me these things, knowing that you're going to walk out the door with Becca...that hurts. It hurts more than you will ever know. So please, if you care about my feelings as much as you claim...just go.”

There was a pregnant pause, silence hanging heavy between them, before the weight of his jacket settled on her shoulders and the soft sound of the door clicking shut echoed in her ears. Aria bit back a sob, burying her face in the still warm leather. No matter how many times they did this song and dance, she couldn't bring herself to let him go. It wasn't an obsession, she'd considered that. It was more like this awareness that there was something between them that could be magical if he would just give it half a shot. Instead, they both spent their nights miserable. Her crying alone in her bed while he lay next to someone who was mean for sport.

Taehyung could care less about Jeon Jungkook and the girls that crowded around him everyday at lunch and wherever he went. It was just the fact that you were one of the girls that were attracted to Jungkook that made Taehyung crazy.

You, a band geek and the only girl in the saxophone section, had a crush on the best football player of Bighit High. Jungkook, who probably had too many flings and girlfriends for an 18 year old.

Jungkook would never even look in your way.

Then, there was Taehyung.

The saxophone section leader who had a crush on his best friend - you - since freshman year. Not to mention that he had never dated anyone. He tried to confess to one of his crushes back in the seventh grade, but she hadn’t picked up the phone and Taehyung was too deflated of energy and confidence to call again.

So here he was now, drowning in his lowering self-confidence in his last year of high school as you fawned over Jungkook’s jawline, muscles, and performance on the field.

“Y/N,” Taehyung taps your shoulder. You were the second chair which explains why you were currently standing right next to him. Your rank was pretty impressive in the band, considering how you were self-taught and often excluded from the section since you were the only girl.

That’s what Taehyung admired you for.

You were beautiful both inside and out. Your determination, perseverance, confidence, and kindness had managed to capture Taehyung’s heart from the beginning of the marching season back in the first year of high school where all the others in your class were lanky, timid, and lost.

You hum in response and turn to him slowly, letting your eyes linger on Jungkook’s built form that was currently stretching in such an attractive way. You couldn’t believe he was real.

“Y/N!” Taehyung frowns and finally manages to have your full attention on him even if you had an annoyed scowl on your face.

“I swear, Kim Taehyung,” you huff in frustration. “Every single football game, you can’t even have me sparing a short glance at Jeon Jungkook.”

Taehyung scoffs. “I’m just keeping you from getting caught, oogling at his sweaty body.”

You open your mouth, ready to respond with a snarky remark when your drum major raises up her arms and yells out a pep tune for the band to play, followed by the roars of the crowd.

You scurry to put your sax in the right position and blast out the notes to “Turn Up the Dial” for the touchdown that your football team managed to score.

When it was safe to relax and chat again, you fiercely turn to Taehyung and pout at him.

“I MISSED THE FIRST TOUCHDOWN WE SCORED!” you scream, earning a wince from Taehyung and giggles from the other students around you.

“Tae? What’d you do now?” Namjoon, the fellow trombone player chuckles from the bench behind you.

“Probably got jealous of Y/N staring at Jungkook again,” the smiley trumpet, Jung Hoseok joins in and takes the opportunity to tease Taehyung of his crush on you. The crush that you were not aware of.

“Shut up, Hoseok,” Taehyung grits between his teeth. “I’m not jealous.”

“OH MY GOD!” you yell, jumping and squealing.

The three boys all turn to you, looking the happiest they had ever seen you this whole year.

“HE’S SWITCHING OUT!” you shriek as Jungkook high-fives a teammate and jogs to the middle of the field, positioning himself for a match in place of the guy he had switched out with. You tightly grasp onto Taehyung’s arm as the loud beep is heard and the ball is thrown. Taehyung gulps in nervousness at your close proximity and grip on his arm. He can distinctly hear Namjoon and Hoseok’s snickers from behind you and if he weren’t so shaken up, Taehyung would probably be spraying his water bottle all over them.

It had happened before.

“WHOO!” you cheer as the ball in Jungkook’s possession travels right across the field and past the goal line. Cheers and roars are heard from the audience as your high school football players cheer on the field.

“ONE, TWO, THREE!” your drum major conducts and the band plays “Turn Up the Dial” once again to celebrate their goal.

After a few more goals from both your side and the opposite, the game had ended with the opposite school winning. How that happened, you honestly had no idea, but your school had a losing streak since your first year.

“Not surprised they lost once again,” Namjoon laughs as the four of you walk to his car.

Hoseok joins in with a giggle. “Did you see the coach’s face when #42 totally miscalculated where the ball was going to land?”

Hoseok imitates the disappointment and anger the coach had on his face when the incident had happened. Taehyung bursts out laughing at how accurate the expression was and unknowingly clutches onto you for support.

You purse your lips, ignoring the way how Taehyung grasped your shoulder felt so comforting and warm and shake off his grip. “Why can’t you guys be supportive of our school for once?”

The boys stare at you incredulously before bursting into fits of laughter.

“You’re hilarious, Y/N!” Hoseok slaps you on the back before heading to the passenger seat of Namjoon’s car.

You roll your eyes in response and begrudgingly get in the back with Taehyung. The back was anything but spacious. You could barely move your legs and awkwardly touched knees with Taehyung. The fact that Taehyung was a 5’ 10 giant made it feel more cramped than it already was.

Namjoon’s old, rackety hand-me-down car jolts when the engine starts, lifting everyone in the car at least an inch off their seats.

“Sorry guys,” Namjoon nervously laughs, sending you and Taehyung a sheepish grin. Taehyung reprociated the grin before quietly giggling to himself.

You gaze out the window and stare at the dark bushes that flash by your eyes. You sigh and notice that the car has suddenly become very quiet. You look up to see that Namjoon was silently driving, probably deep in his own thoughts, Hoseok nodding off, and Taehyung, also falling asleep.

A faint smile appears on your face and it quickly turns into a grin when you realize how content your life was with these three guys.

Being the only female saxophone player gave the other girls a feeling of staying away from you. Plus, your best friends were the most popular boys among the band girls and the girls were never very happy to see you in such close proximity with the boys.

You lean back in the car seat and the way you fangirled over Jeon Jungkook floods into your mind. You internally groan and stuff your pockets into the pockets of your sweater. You glance over at Taehyung who was now fully asleep, sitting upright with his mouth hanging open.

You unconsciously let your eyes graze over his sleeping figure.

“Cute,” you whisper.

“What?” Namjoon breaks the peaceful silence, startling you.

Quickly remembering you weren’t alone and you could obviously be heard, you feel your face warm and let out a fake cough.

“N-Nothing. What’s wrong?” you gulp.

Namjoon tilts his head in confusion. “Nevermind. I must’ve been hearing things.”

You sigh in relief at how Namjoon quickly dropped the subject. You really would not know what to do if he or anyone, in general, found out about your small, little crush on Kim Taehyung.

Why you were acting like a crazy fangirl over Jungkook, you didn’t know. It was true that you used to have a crush on Jungkook. How can you not? He was just… Jungkook. The handsome, star athlete. 

But somewhere on the way, you had fallen out of your one-sided love after realizing that someone perfect for you was always right next to you. 

Taehyung.

Your jaw still dropped at Jungkook’s flexed muscles and sweaty, glorious self, but it was merely a fangirl type of love. You admired Jungkook for his hard work and competitiveness. You were completely aware of Jungkook’s cocky personality, but you believed that the nice, innocent boy was deep in his heart, somewhere. The crush on Jungkook was long gone. That crush ended as soon as it started, but your friends always had the thought that you had feelings for Jungkook since you were seen cheering him on multiple times.

Including Taehyung himself.

But nevertheless, your heart beat for the one and only, Kim Taehyung.

It was from the second year of high school that you started noticing Taehyung’s towering height and mature looks. He still had his glasses, but his face was clear of acne and he seemed to shine when playing his instrument so passionately during band.

Taehyung had his own unique charm that caught your attention. When you woke up in the morning, you would think of his boxy smile and cute giggles that rarely escaped his mouth. He only laughed in front of you, Namjoon, and Hoseok. Taehyung felt somewhat uncomfortable in band which was completely understandable.

You wouldn’t want people screaming every time you smiled or stood up or sat down. It was annoying. Taehyung got used to it now, but the habit of not laughing made him look super intimidating in the eyes of the newbies. It would be an accomplishment to make Taehyung laugh in school.

It was something you were good at.

Making Taehyung laugh was one of your specialties and it made you giddy to be the source of his booming laughter and ear-splitting, boxy smile.

Liking someone that talks to you and enjoys your company is probably the best feeling that you ever felt and will ever feel in your entire life.

A sudden thud makes you jolt up from your seat and brings you out of memory lane.

Back into reality, you feel a pressure on your left shoulder and realize that Taehyung’s head was leaning into it. You release a breath that you weren’t aware of holding and sigh heavily to calm your erratically beating heart.

To Namjoon, it seemed like you were suffering from Taehyung’s heavy head.

“Shit!” Namjoon suddenly screams and slams on the brakes.

“FUCKING SHIT! WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK NAMJOON!” you yell as you jut your arms out to brace yourself against the impact.

“OH GOD! WHAT’S HAPPENING!?” you hear Hoseok screaming with a raw voice from waking up so abruptly.

Taehyung merely stirs and, if possible, leans even closer to your body while grumbling under his breath.

“I’M TEN MINUTES PAST MY CURFEW!” Namjoon shouts again, silencing the whole car.

You sigh and kick the back of Hoseok’s seat. “Fuck, Namjoon. I thought we had a truck barreling towards us.”

Namjoon doesn’t seem to decipher your annoyed tone and instead, hastily gets out of his seat to tug Taehyung out of his car.

Alarmed and confused, you follow out and run up to the six-foot man who was dangerously carrying a groggy Taehyung in his arms.

“Y/N, I promise I’ll make it up to you,” Namjoon gasps, pushing Taehyung and a wad of cash into your arms and sprints back into his car. “Go in the store and eat some ramen!”

You furrow your brows in confusion at the sudden string of events that happened in the span of a minute. “KIM NAMJOON!” you scream after his sputtering engine.

Horrified at how your usually loyal friend kicked you and Taehyung out of his car, you growl and kick a nearby tree. You whip out your phone and immediately call up Hoseok, knowing full well that Namjoon would be avoiding your calls and messages for a while.

“Hello?” you hear Hoseok answer.

“Yeah. Fucking hello to you too,” you spit out. From the corner of your eye, you see Taehyung rub the sleepiness from his eyes and confusingly look around where the two of you were. “Put Namjoon on the phone.”

Hoseok compiles, shuddering from your anger that seemed to seep through the speakers.

“H-Hello?” Namjoon stutters.

“WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT!?” you rage. “YOU THINK JUST KICKING TAEHYUNG AND ME OUT INTO A RANDOM STREETS WILL SOMEHOW MAKE YOU GO HOME FASTER? YOU PIECE OF-”

You stop your sentence short as an unknown force yanks your phone out of your hands. You look up to meet Taehyung’s perfect side profile, that you couldn’t help but to gape at. You stare at how he calmly talks to Namjoon and hangs up after a full minute with a small giggle.

You absentmindedly stare at Taehyung’s slender hands that hold your phone. Taehyung looks up from your phone and clears his throat to get your attention. You ignore the blush creeping up your cheeks and look up at him.

“Don’t be too mad, Y/N,” Taehyung pats the top of your head, making you frown at how small he was making you feel.

“Why shouldn’t I be?” you shoot back with venom. “What kind of friend leaves his friends out on the road because of some damn curfew?”

Taehyung silently holds your wrist and leads you into the convenience store behind the two of you.

“You know how Namjoon’s parents are,” Taehyung quietly says. “He said Hoseok was going to sleepover at his house today. Our houses are pretty far from Namjoon’s and he can’t afford to be more than twenty minutes late.”

You nod in defeat, feeling the guilt for cursing at Namjoon seep in. Namjoon’s parents were nice and caring, but also very strict when it came to academics, school, and things like curfews. You remember when you got a call from him in the middle of the night, asking if he could crash for the night. Namjoon had fallen asleep in the library. When he awoke, it was well past midnight and he knew if he went home, it would end up with him dead.

You had let him in after he explained how he called in with his parents and told them that he was sorry for the late notice, but he was sleeping over at a friend’s house.

Remembering the often stressed out Namjoon, you sighed and quickly forgave him of his panicked actions.

“Welcome!” a chirpy voice calls out.

Taehyung looks at the wide-eyed girl standing behind the counter and sends her a small smile, making her blush and look away. You hold back a scoff and roll your eyes to yourself.

Taehyung smirks at your attempt to hide your annoyance and feels his heart swell.

“Jealous?” he jokingly nudges you.

You let out a breathy laugh and punch his arm, feigning passiveness. “Why would I be jealous?”

Why am I jealous? He’s not mine.

Taehyung’s smirk turns into a straight line and he resists the urge to confess his undying love for you right then and there.

“Yeah…” Taehyung mutters to himself. “Why would you be jealous?”

Taehyung leaves you to order the food and runs down the aisles, looking for snacks.

You head up to the register, pretending not to notice how she was blatantly staring at Taehyung’s profile as he decided which snacks to buy. “Cheese and sausage with the ramen, please,” you give the worker a tight-lipped smile. She curtly nods and reads out your total, after punching in some numbers.

“Um…”

You look up from putting the change in your back pocket and see that the girl was staring at you.

“Yes?” you gulp, feeling very uncomfortable under her gaze.

“Is he your boyfriend?” she asks with something like hope gleaming in her eyes.

Your normal, warm eyes suddenly turn cold and shoot her an icy glare.

No.

“Yes.”

Your own eyes widen at your response.

Shit. Y/N! Why did you say that!?

The girl frowns and nods disappointedly, not noticing your frozen form that was internally panicking at what you just said.

The teenage part-timer quietly hands you two packaged ramen, two slices of cheese, and two rolls of sausages.

You reach out to take the food when you suddenly feel Taehyung’s presence next to you. You turn to look at him with his mouth slightly open and arms weakly holding up the bags of snacks.

Your eyes double in size at the amount of chip bags Taehyung had brought and forget about the fact that Taehyung might’ve heard everything that went on between you and the poor, single girl.

“Tae!” you scold. “You’re going to eat all of this?”

Your scolding tone seems to remind Taehyung that he still had to pay for his things.

“U-Uh. Yeah. I thought we could… share,” he says, almost breathlessly. You give him a weird look and nod slowly even though you were squealing inside from the cute, blank look he had on his face.

“Okay… Well, I’m just going to go there and make the food,” you inform him and walk out the store, towards the ramen cookers outside by the tables.

Taehyung sighs and releases the pile of snacks in his arms onto the small counter. The girl giggles and gives him a bright smile.

Taehyung gives her a nervous grin and averts his eyes onto the TV.

“You must be lucky,” the girl in front of him suddenly says.

“Hm?”

“I asked your girlfriend if you guys were dating,” she sighs. “Sadly, yes. But the way she was so protective and defensive about you was endearing.”

Taehyung’s lips curve into a smile. “She said… we were dating?”

The girl nods. “Must be nice.”

Taehyung turns his head to the see through windows and watches as you poke random buttons on the machine with a pout on your face.

He can almost hear your frustrated groan from inside the store.

“Yup,” Taehyung grins, turning back to the girl who was done scanning the snacks and putting them in the bag. “It is nice.”

The bell jingles, indicating that someone entered the store, and automatically, Taehyung’s head turns to see who it was.

Standing there at the door was you, with the cutest frown that Taehyung had ever seen.

His arm shoots straight up, hooking the plastic bag filled with snacks onto his fingers in the process.

“Y/N!” Taehyung yells out of sheer excitement. He had hope that you might like him back.

Both you and the girl look up at Taehyung at his booming voice.

“Why are you yelling?” you ask and hurry over to him. You apologize on Taehyung’s behalf and drag him outside to the ramen cookers.

“Anyways,” you say, dismissing what happened in the store. “I have no idea how this thing works and I’m really hungry.”

Taehyung completely ignores your complaint and instead drops his hands to your shoulders. You gasp at his touch.

“W-What?” you stutter, internally cursing yourself for showing what kind of effect he had on you.

“I’m hungry, Taehyung!” you huff when he doesn’t say anything. Your anxious eyes decide to focus on the lamp above Taehyung’s head. You couldn’t bear to look into Taehyung’s deep, intense eyes that were currently focused on you and you only.

“Boy...friend?” he questions.

Your eyes go wide and you immediately shake your head.

He heard.

“N-No! I… It’s not what you think it is! I-I just got surprised when the girl suddenly asked me if y-you were my boyfriend, so I just said yes without even thinking. I know you can never see me in that light and I completely understand if what I’m feeling is-” you abruptly stop your rambling, realizing that you were just about to confess your hidden feelings to Taehyung.

“W-What?” Taehyung stammers. He was planning to tease you, but what you just said made Taehyung feel another surge of hope. “What feelings?”

You step back from his hold on you and shake your head. “Nothing. I was just saying nonsense.”

“You have…” Taehyung steps closer. “Feelings? For me?”

You grimace.

Great job, Y/N. You now fucked up your friendship.

“I…” you let out a shaky breath.

Just go for it. YOLO.

“Yeah. I do.”

Taehyung silently gasps and feels like he’s going to pass out. His four-year crush just confessed to him. You confessed to him. YOU liked him back.

Taehyung can barely hide the grin that takes over his face. “Y/N.”

“I know,” you sigh, not looking up at him due to half embarrassment and half fear. “You see me as a sister and you won’t ever like me in that way. I’m sorry. I just fucked everything up with my stupid feelings for you. Please don’t make it awkward though. I promise I won’t-”

“Stupid feelings?” Taehyung frowns. “Then what does that make me? I’ve liked you for four years.”

“Yes. My stupid one-sided feelings... Wait what?” you jerk your head to look into his eyes. “You? Like me?”

Taehyung rolls his eyes. “Have been since the first year of high school.”

Your jaw drops.

“You’re really, really oblivious, you know that?” Taehyung chuckles and ruffles your hair. “Hey, but this can be our first date.”

You gulp at his words.

What in the world is happening?

“I...Uh…”

Did he just...? He liked me since freshman year? HE LIKED ME SINCE FRESHMAN YEAR.

“No way,” you murmur, just above a whisper.

“Two band geeks eating ramen from the local convenience store for their first date,” Taehyung hums, fiddling with the ramen machine and figuring out how to correctly use it. Once the hot water trickles out, he straightens up from his bent position and smiles at you. Your heart stutters at what he says next with his silly grin and flirty tone.

“Romantic,”  Taehyung triumphantly grins.

More than Jeon Jungkook would ever be.

Lena Horne, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump

Back in the Golden Era of Hollywood* white folks would point to Lena Horne as an example of how America wasn’t racist, America offered opportunities for everyone.

“Look at her!  She’s a movie star!  She appears in big movies!

“How could she do that if we were racists?”

Every society, no matter how stratified or hidebound, has space for a few socially approved outliers.

You can always afford one rigidly controlled exception to the rule, who can paradoxically serve as both a reassurance that there’s room for others and as an easily dismissed distraction should they arouse too much or the wrong kind of attention.

Lena Horne was an exceptionally beautiful singer-actress in a time and place where beautiful singe-actresses were the norm.  She appeared in dozens of major movies from big studios, and was well respected by her co-workers and peers.

And she was -- or rather the role she occupied in America was -- totally fake.

Ms Horne never had a substantial role or dramatic scene in any movie that did not feature a predominantly African-American cast.

The big budget musicals she appeared in, the ones aimed at mainstream audiences -- white audiences -- typically cast her as a specialty number:  In the middle of a big show within the movie, the camera would pan over to her standing in front of a curtain where she would belt out a show tune.

And white Americans would say to foreigners who criticized the US for its racism, “What about Lena Horne? Look at all the movies she appears in!”

She appeared as an appendix, a wholly superfluous addition whose presence or absence didn’t affect the film one whit.

Her musical numbers in mainstream (i.e., white) musicals were filmed and edited into the final picture so they could be cut out!

See, there were parts of the US that did not care for Ms Horne’s skin color one little bit.

And when her movies played there -- snip-snip.

Out she came.

That way no lily white audiences ever had to be offended that a n[FL play]er dared sully their lily white screen.

Why was she in there in the first place?

As a sop to the African-American community, to lure them into the theaters so they could have five minutes enjoying a performance by somebody who looked like them.

And to a lesser degree, as a sop to those few white Americans who, while not exactly “woke”, were at least stirring restlessly in their sleep.  “Hey, we can’t be all bad if we let a colored girl sing in a movie, can we?”

[SIDEBAR:  You wanna see what Ms Horne was capable of, track down Stormy Weather, an all African-American musical that I rank as the 3rd best movie musical ever made, trailing narrowly behind Singin’ In The Rain and The Band Wagon.]

Barack Obama was 21st century white America’s Lena Horne.

“Hey, how can we be racist if we elected a black president?” was white code for “We want you black people to shut up about the injustices you have suffered and continue to suffer.”

White America wanted Obama to be their Oreo:  Black on the outside but white on the inside.

They wanted him to champion white values and interests.

Not American values and interests.

White values and interests.

“Hey, we elected a black president…”

”…so we don’t have to do anything about the disproportionate justice meted out against African-Americans.”

“Hey, we elected a black president…”

”…so we don’t have to do anything about inner city communities that are still reeling from the effects of hundreds of years of dehumanization.”

“Hey, we elected a black president…”

”…so we don’t have to do anything about addressing the needs and concerns of people who have been deliberately and consciously excluded from the American dream.”

No, Obama was supposed to be the magic cure-all, the ultimate placebo that would get those pesky minorities to stop complaining so white folks could like their lives in ease and comfort and not have to worry about how non-whites were being treated.

Just stand up against that curtain, Barack, and sing…

But Barack Obama didn’t do that.

Barack Obama said, “Hey, we still have a problem if police accost an African-American in his own home and accuse him of being a burglar even when he can prove he lives there.”

And ya know what?

We do have a problem if that can happen.

Because in order to reach the relatively mild level of just getting falsely arrested by a police office who doesn’t believe your identity, we first have to undercut your basic rights as a human being and as a citizen of the United States.

We have to pre-judge you on the color of your skin, to assume you are intrinsically criminal and hence worthy only of suspicion and distrust.

We have to assume you are not educated enough to hold a job that would pay enough for you to buy the home we’re accusing you of burglarizing.

Many white people voted for Obama because they wanted to shut up minority critics.

And to their surprise and horror, Obama basically said, “No, they’ve got a point:  There still is a lot we need to work on to make this nation what is claims it wants to be.”

White people lost their shit over that.

Things got worse as the #BlackLivesMatter movement started.

White folks really lost their shit over that!

Most white people do not hate minorities…

…but they do fear them.

They fear minority crime, but not in the way one thinks.

White people are the biggest criminal threat to other white people.

Rather, they fear minorities because they ultimately fear a loss of status.

As I’ve noted previously, white identity defines itself by whom it excludes.

Barack Obama had one white American and one black Kenyan parent.

In the eyes of white America, that made him black.

And to many white Americans, it made him Kenyan as well.

White Americans define themselves by whom they exclude, never by whom they include.

Also as noted previously, despite its claims to be a classless society, America is very much a class-oriented society, one in which white people were guaranteed at the very least working class status by the simple fact non-whites were automatically regulated to lower class status.

When non-whites achieved skills and education that enabled them to climb out of their lower class status, they were only allowed to climb to higher status within their own communities.

An African-American lawyer might be able to plead a case in a white court, but only for a black client, never a white one.

Middle and working class whites feared losing their status; middle class whites feared slipping down to working class, working class feared becoming lower class.

Only if there was a built-in cushion, a concrete floor they were guaranteed they could not fall below, did whites feel comfortable.

(The astute reader will note this also applies to matters of gender, and orientation, and religion; we focus on race in this post because it’s the most obvious example, but it’s far from the only one.)

That floor was a ceiling for the minorities trapped below it, and the cracks that allowed some minorities to rise above it terrified whites who feared they’d slip through it.

Laws and customs and traditions and practices that kept minorities at arm’s length were the spackling that plugged those cracks.

Police and law enforcement and the judicial and penal systems were part of those plugs.

Minorities were treated more harshly, and penalized more severely, that whites who committed similar crimes.

Whites justified this by saying minorities were, by nature or nurture, more dangerous…more violent…more criminal than mainstream (read “white”) culture, and as such were inherently deserving of such treatment.

A white college student caught with a gram of cocaine would likely get A Very Strong Talking To by the judge and perhaps even have to perform some token community service, but a ghetto kid with a joint?  

Five to ten.

But as whites excluded more and more people from their group -- their own children and grandchildren from matings with non-whites -- the number and voice of minorities grew.

#BlackLivesMatter quite literally and explicitly means “Black lives matter as much as all other lives” but the white community couldn’t have that.

First they deliberately lied, and said #BlackLivesMatter meant “only black lives matter’.

I’ve said elsewhere that some people project so much they should really pay union dues to IATSE. #BlackLivesMatter is a response to the “only white lives matter” attitude found among too many people in law enforcement and the judicial system.

Second, whites claimed #BlackLivesMatter was anti-police (no, it only calls for the police to treat all persons with the same degree of courtesy and respect).

They framed that fake anti-police stance as a desire among the African-American community to wreak harm and havoc on innocent whites (though, as noted elsewhere, how innocent are you if you help maintain a system that harms others for your benefit?).

Nobody ever posted #AllLivesMatter or anything like it prior to #BlackLivesMatter making its first appearance, yet the sentiment found in #BlackLivesMatter can be traced back to the earliest calls for racial justice in this land.

Finally, whites promoted #BlueLivesMatter, a completely bogus straw man argument that places the lives and safety of the police above those of common citizens.

Whitey, please…

Being a police officer is a stressful and dangerous job -- though far from the most dangerous job in America (you wanna risk your life on a daily basis, become a roofer).

Being a police officer isn’t even among the top ten most dangerous jobs in America -- and most law enforcement on the job deaths are the result of traffic accidents (not surprising considering how much time the average officer spends on the road).

Being a police officer means one is entrusted with an awesome and terrible responsibility:  The authority to carry a lethal weapon and to use it against anyone the officer deems to be a clear and present danger to the lives of others.

That is absolutely an authority police officers should have…

…but not all police officers today are worthy of that responsibility.

There is nothing wrong or outrageous about African-American and other minority communities insisting the country’s police officers treat all people they encounter with the same courtesy and respect.

There will be people of all races and genders and ages who will respond to the police with defiance, perhaps up to and including armed resistance.

Fine, that’s why we give the police their authority to carry and use a weapon.

But they need to approach every situation based on what the person is doing at that moment and not whether whether they think or they fear the person may do them harm.

We are employing them -- in every sense of the word -- to put their lives on the line, and to risk their safety in order to preserve the public safety.

And most times, this means waiting until you know what the person you’re dealing with intends to do before acting yourself.

Frankly, if you’re inclined to shoot someone because you’re afraid they might do something, police work is not the career for you.

If unarmed, unresisting whites were treated as callously at so many unarmed and unresisting minorities are, if police gunned down a 12 year old white child without warning while playing in a public park the way they killed Tamir Rice, the white people in this country would go berserk and demand systemic changes top to bottom.

Which brings us to Donald Trump.

If Obama was the homeopathic placebo that white people thought would give them the “Get Out Of Racism FREE” card they longed to have, Trump was to be their purge to drive all the toxins they perceived out of the system and to restore them to their previous lost status.

Make American Great Again was their motto.

And yet when you asked them what that meant, it never referred to real measurable metrics such as changes in purchasing power, increases in productivity, spiraling health care costs, etc.

It always came back to re-establishing a mythical golden social order, where whites felt safe and secure in their (disguised) middle and working class status, and never feared dropping below the concrete floor that held so many others down.

Several years ago I wrote about the fast approaching year 2048.

That’s the year the census bureau projects the number of people identified as “white” Americans will drop to 49.99%.

The year the white majority vanishes…

…replaced by one large minority…

…but a minority nonetheless.

Knowing this day approaches, we will see more and more acting out by white people.

Uglier and uglier.

Sicker and sicker.

Deadlier and deadlier.

In a perverse way, we are lucky to have Trump now.

A competent racist demagogue could do far more damage.

He will taint the white political waters for at least a decade.

And that will shave white majority status ever narrower.

Remember, don’t feel sorry for whites; they are causing this by excluding their own descendants.

What they do to their children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren will eventually be visited upon their own community.

The day they fear will finally arrive.

They won’t be anything special.

They’ll just be like everybody else.

E pluribus unum = “Out of the many, one.”

Maybe that will finally come about when there is no longer an arbitrary racial barrier to divide us by class.

Anon:  Fic when the reader is an English major in college so she challenges Diana in scrabble? So to make it interesting, because she knows that she’ll win anyway, Diana decides to make it strip scrabble so she can get the reader to undress for her (consensually, of course) 

I apologize for the delay. I read and love all the requests you send, but not always I have the right inspiration to write them, so I can take a while. However, I'm glad I waited. Because I was able to write this now and LOVED the result. I hope you like it too. Stay tuned for the final notes. :D

Just to clarify it, the reader is a senior student and therefore of legal age. :)

In your few years of academic life in college you never imagined meeting someone like Diana

You always thought you would start and finish your studies alone and without friends.

It was no news to anyone how shy and introverted you were and how difficult it was to get along with the young people your age.

Not that you felt superior or anything like that, but sometimes they could be so .... childish.

You just didn’t live in the same environment as them.

And so it was a surprise when you made friends with the last person you would expect in your life. Your art teacher.

Not any teacher.

Diana was amazing and it was something you knew from the first day of class you had with her.

Diana seemed to realize how excluded you was and slowly began working on a way to get closer to you.

You were extremely intelligent and insightful and she wanted to know better the girl hidden behind the books

But this isn’t a story of how you met and became close. It's the story of how you ended up half-naked in the middle of the board game in front of a fun and debauched Diana.

Your family was currently living in another state and since taking up college, you spent all holidays and weekends alone on campus.

Since Diana became your best friend (and whenever she had time), she would spend those dates with you so you wouldn’t be alone anymore.

It was like a girls' night.

And girls' night had games.

The only problem was that Diana was good at every game you played.

(After all, what was that woman not good about?)

"I can not believe this" you huffed slightly before saving scrabble pieces with a slight pout on her lips

Diana laughed behind a glass of wine. It was really fun to see you trying to win in every game you played. But she always won and that always frustrated you.

She liked it. You were adorable when you pissed a loser.

"I was really confident" you murmured, before settling down beside the Amazon and sipping your hot chocolate.

Diana could not blame you. She lived years ago, scrabble became one of the easiest and fun word games for her. She had an extensive and long vocabulary accumulated all these years. You couldn’t beat her even if you wanted to.

"How about a game I don’t know, so you get the upper hand" Diana suggested, running her free hand through your hair.

She loved your hair. They were just so soft and silky she could stay all day smoothing them.

But of course ... that would be strange. You were just friends.

"That would be cheating" you murmured almost in a purr for the affection in the head.

Diana just smiled and shrugged.

"Not if I am giving you the opportunity"

Snapping your tongue, you opened your eyes and thought for a moment what games you still had and which Diana had not yet played.

"I know!" You jumped off the rug where you were sitting and ran into the bedroom. Diana just laughed at your enthusiasm and stood up to make some popcorn while she waited for your return.

Not long after, you returned with a board box and set it down on the coffee table where they were playing.

Diana came back and looked at the game with curiosity.

"What would that be?"

You smiled broadly and opened the box as you separated the pieces.

"It's a Brazilian war game based on conquest and strategy. It is disputed with a map of the world divided into six regions. Each player receives a card with a certain goal and whoever completes his first and declares it completed, wins. "You removed the base of the map by opening it on the table, as well as the cards and dice. "These colorful pieces represent our armies ..." you went on to explain the purpose of the game to Diana and the rules while they both ate the popcorn and relaxed on the rug.

Diana loved being in your surroundings, it was simply cozy and comfortable. You made her feel at home. She had stopped paying attention to the explanation and only admired you, until you finally took advantage of the situation and blushed slightly.

"What's it? Didn’t you like it? We can play something else if you find this boring too "

Diana laughed at you concern and denied it softly.

Suddenly an idea formed in she's head ..

"How about we make the game more fun?" You frowned in confusion and leaned your head slightly to the side.

It was one of the things Diana thought was too cute for you.

"Of course. Shoot" you shrugged, curiosity racing over your head.

"The game is based on conquest. Right? "You nodded in confirmation and Diana continued as if she didn’t want anything. "What if, on each continent that one of us conquers, we take a piece of clothing?"

You froze for a moment. Your throat went dry and you were sure that all your blood was on your face now.

Diana had a passive, calm expression on the outside, but inside she was content not to laugh at your shy reaction.

"W-why ... why this?" You stammered, adjusting the glasses on your face and looking anywhere but Diana.

"You need to loosen up more. That's what you told me last week. I thought it would help. But you don’t have to if you don’t want to" Diana touched your shoulder, feeling your tension. "Hey, it was just a joke. I would never tell you to do something you are not comfortable with "

And yes, you know. Diana was too good to make anyone embarrassed.

And she had already told you that she had grown up with many sisters and that female nudity was something she was already accustomed and indifferent to. So, why not?

Diana was your friend and she would never judge you for it.

Taking a deep breath and summoning courage from the bottom of his crease, you nodded.

"Lets do this. What's too much, anyway?"

Besides this was a game you were familiar with and Diana was not. You could win!

How was this possible anyway?

You were doing so well in the early rounds. So Diana had to take some clothes and ......

And she was a freak of a distraction.

You were no longer thinking straight and your moves were a mess.

Damn it. She had everything under control from the start.

"OK. I hate you now ..." you murmured, hugging your chest. You were so lost in your defeat that you didn’t even have time to feel ashamed for your partial nudity.

You were in only your sports bra and underwear. Diana still had her pants on, so yes. You were losing.

Diana gave a lascivious smile.

It was also a surprise to her.

Growing up on an island of Amazon warriors, well trained and certainly muscular in partial nudity your whole life should have prepared her to see you half-naked.

But this was not the case.

You was so beautiful. Your skin looked so soft and smooth and her hands itched to caress you.

She just wanted to sprinkle kisses everywhere, on every little freckles you had. Leave a red line on your neck ....

"Diana ..." you cut off the rider's thinking. Diana cleared her throat and met your eyes.

"Yes?" Diana still had to shake her head to ward off the dirty thoughts from her head while you seemed completely unconscious

"You won, you ask. Remember?"

Diana bit her lower lip. She really tried to keep a line of friendship with you, but she knew she felt much more than that.

If she risked now, she could lose you. But at the same time she could win her heart too.

In the meantime you stared at her in silence. You were relaxed, leaning slightly backward, propped up in your arms as Diana crawled up to you, hovering over you.

"Anything?" Diana asked in a whisper and you were sure your neurons were frying right now.

Your whole brain seemed to be on alert. A flashing red light and thumbnails of you running around.

Not knowing if she could find your voice, you just nodded.

"Can I kiss you?" Diana asked softly, but you still noticed a slight concern in her voice. Rejection, maybe?

With your brain in short circuit and your voice hidden somewhere deep in your throat, you didn’t want to give Diana the negative intention and in a small surge of courage you moved a hand to the nape of her neck and pulled her mouth to find yours.

Diana fell on you as the kiss became more and more heated and passionate.

And as Diana's hands tightened around her waist and your legs wrapped around her waist, you realized that losing a game might not be so bad ...

You should lose more often.

So for those who got a little confused about the game. "La conquite deu monde" was a game created in France and popularized in North America through the Parker brothers with the name Risk and a Brazilian decided to create a version of the game (because at the time there were no board games for adults on here). And so WAR was born. It has several formats such as WAR Roman Empire. WAR Vikings and everyone is excellent. I hope you enjoyed it. I know I did not focus on the game, but if you're curious you can google for Risk (I've never played it, but I think it's similar).

Unnecessary Arguments - Lowell High School is using a lottery system

Person #1: Okay, before we begin this argument I want you to admit in front of everyone that you’re jealous you didn’t get into Lowell

Person #2: Wow, starting the debate with a personal attack. You should run for president

Person #1: You’re jealous you didn’t get into one of San Francisco’s two magnet high schools. That’s why you believe Lowell shouldn’t exist

Person #2: No, Lowell should definitely exist. And no, I’m not arguing against its placement process. What I want to argue is that at this particular point in time, many students are lacking in critical data points. The solution? A lottery. That’s exactly what they did

Person #1: Brilliant. Maybe they should do that at Harvard, too...get the names of everyone at the age of 18, run a random number generator, done. Hell, maybe Google and Amazon should do that to hire their next set of software engineers. I’ve heard software engineer managers tend to disproportionately hire people with computer science degrees

Person #2: We’re putting middle school students, who know very little about anything, through an insanely competitive process that unfairly punishes people who went to harder middle schools. Now they’re suggesting we weigh 6th grade scores? It’s ridiculous. Of course we chose a lottery system

Can a $12 lunch change the way think about racial wealth disparity in America? How about a $30 lunch? That's the premise behind a social experiment playing out in a New Orleans food stall.

Chef Tunde Way opened his pop-up stall in the city's Roux Carre venue in early February. The listed price for the Nigerian food is $12. But when a white person walks up to order, they are asked to pay $30. Why? "It's two-and-a half times more than the $12 meal, which reflects the income disparity" between whites and African-Americans in New Orleans, says Wey.

The median income for African-American households in New Orleans fell from $32,332 in 2000 to $27,812 in 2013 in inflation-adjusted dollars, according to The Data Center's New Orleans Index at Ten. Over the same time, median income for white households in the city remained roughly the same, $61,1117 to $60,070. In 2013, the median household income for African-Americans in metro New Orleans was 54 percent lower than for whites.

Wey says when white customers come up to his window to place an order, he tells them about this racial income gap and then asks if they want to pay the higher $30 price. They also have the option to pay the listed $12 price. The difference between the $12 and $30 meals, customers are informed, will be redistributed to minorities who buy food at the stall. How do white customers react to the proposition?

"Some of them are enthusiastic, some of them are bamboozled a bit by it," Wey says. "But the majority of white folks, nearly 80 percent, decided to pay."

"That was definitely higher than we expected," says Anjali Prasertong, a graduate student in public health at Tulane University who helped Wey design the experiment and collect data.

Customers who agree to buy lunch were asked to fill out a brief survey online. A subset of these diners were also pulled aside and interviewed about how income and wealth disparity has played out in their own lives.

Prasertong points to one anecdote from an African-American customer whom she interviewed. "I asked her, 'If you had been given access to more resources while you were growing up, would that have changed your life in any way?'" Prasertong recalls. "She immediately had an example."

The woman told Prasertong that when she was a college student, she was offered an unpaid summer White House internship in Washington, D.C. But that meant she would have had to find a way to support herself in another city instead of spending the summer earning money that she could use to help pay for school in the fall. The woman passed on the internship, Prasertong says, because "she realized, 'Oh, it's just for rich people'" – meaning students whose parents could afford to subsidize them while they worked for free. "She still went on to be successful but if she'd done that internship, who knows what she'd be doing?"

"One of the things I took away from interviewing people was a greater awareness that people of color have thought about wealth disparity and how it has touched their lives and the kinds of things they've lost out on because they didn't have access to the resources their white friends did," says Prasertong. "Not that [white people] weren't aware, but they never really thought about how ... that might have affected where they are in the world in relation to people of color. They never stopped to think, 'Oh, that car my parents gave me in college allowed me to drive across town to get a good job.'"

As Prasertong points out, "It's not a strict scientific study." One limitation of this experiment is that the customers who came to the stall were all in a higher-than-average income bracket. Prasertong says that may be one reason why the vast majority of customers of color – African-Americans, Latinos and Asians – declined to sign up to receive the redistributed money made from charging whites the higher price.

As of Feb. 28, the day the premise of the experiment was revealed in a Times-Picayunearticle, 64 people had completed the survey, which included 32 whites, Prasertong says. Twenty-five white customers paid the extra $18, adding up to a pool of $450. Only six people of color had signed up for distributions, which they would split evenly among them, $75 each.

The food stall – called Saartj, a reference to a 19th-century black South African woman infamously paraded as a "freak show" in Europe – will be open through Sunday, though the data collection part of the experiment is now over.

While this experiment focused on racial income disparity in New Orleans, the numbers when it comes to the racial wealth gap in America are even starker. White families accumulate more wealth more quickly than do families comprised of people of color. As NPR's Code Switch team has reported:

"In 2013, the median white family held 13 times as much net wealth as the median black family and 10 times as much wealth as the median Latino family, according to the Federal Reserve's Survey of Consumer Finances."

There are many reasons cited behind this gap, including slavery and institutional and governmental discrimination that excluded people of color from programs that helped Americans build wealth and pass it down through the generations. As Code Switch writes: "Segregation and redlining by banks made it impossible for many black and Latino families to secure mortgages, for example. The GI Bill, which helped establish an American middle class by helping veterans pay for college and buy homes after World War II, mostly excluded people of color."

One goal of his experiment, says Wey, is to get people to think about how the racial wealth and income gaps affect their own lives, and also how they can as individuals be a force for change.

"We think of this as a systemic issue, like something that happens outside of ourselves, when in fact the aggregate sum of all of our actions and choices exacerbates or ameliorates the wealth gap," says Wey. That includes actions like "where we choose to send our children to school, where we choose to buy a home and critically, how we choose to spend our money and where we choose to spend our money. "

I don’t remember seeing her with any clique back in high school, but I’m not here to spill yesterday’s tea. So straight to the rundown: can you say passionate and bold? Apparently now she spends time as a kindergarten teacher at Little Stars Childcare Centre and a performer at Trocadero Burlesque Club, and keeps skeletons buried at Banjeom Apartments, 205. But those won’t stay hidden for long, if you and I have any say on it. Welcome back, Cake Face; we missed you so.

In case you don’t remember the devil’s name, here’s to refresh your memory:

Chaerin started her high school career as a happy and bubbly young teenager who was eager to make new friends. But our little ray of sunshine became a rather shy and insecure young girl fast when she got bullied and body-shamed for the way she looked and dressed. She didn’t wear the newest and expensive fashion, nor was interested in applying make-up or wearing perfume. She also couldn’t talk along about the latest trends and popular TV-shows. Nor did she actually like most of the things the popular cliques talked about. Her interests went to those things the popular part of the high school population thought of as childish or stupid. It gave them yet another reason to actively exclude and bully her. She got perceived as weird and as a prude at first but then as a bitch and someone who tried too hard to fit in when one day Chaerin showed up at school supporting the latest fashion and wearing make-up. Mimicking the popular girls at school by doing so, she also tried to behave and talk like them. She did this in hopes of them quitting their bullying, but instead they started with bulling her even more.

Truth was that Chaerin had started to believe the horrible things they had told her about her appearances and thus she suffered from a low-self-esteem. Since the fashion nor make-up didn’t help her case one would think she’d abandon it, but instead Chaerin kept on experimenting with it. The make-up and clothes made her feel like another person entirely. It make her feel like someone who was strong enough to talk back to her bullies, someone who didn’t mind to be excluded and eventually one day she did talk back. Thereby obtaining herself the reputation of bitch and slut.

Nevermind the memory lane though, the present is always the ripest fruit:

Chaerin has come a long way but she did manage to find herself and love herself for who she is. The facade of ‘CL’ she had created back in High School, to deal with the bullying and the hard times, has now become a full part of her personality. The young woman is the perfect mixture between being shy and introverted and bold and out-going. She loves putting on make-up and dressing up, that’s why she works as a performer at a Burlesque club and dreams about becoming a solo artist. But she also loves to stay indoors, sleep a lot and dream about having a family of her own one day. That’s why she went to college to become a kindergarten teacher. She loves that job to the fullest extent of it, but same goes for her performing job at the Burlesque club. With moments she can be very tough and harsh and at others she’s the most warm and loving person you ever came across. Because she’s not filthy of one-night stands and the recreational glass of liquor or cigarette either, some haters say she’s a bipolar bitch who loves to steal other women’s men. Truth is Chaerin/CL is a diverse person who loves a lot of things and has her life somewhat in order. She knows she isn’t entirely there yet, but because of what she experienced she also knows when she needs to take a step back from chasing her dreams and take time for herself. It’s a thing which makes her confident in her own ability and in who she is.

But of course, if things from the past come up who’s to say what will happen to that confident bubble she was able to create for herself in the time Gossip Girl was gone?

Chaerin belonged to the lower-middle class of society. Her parents didn’t have any high education and they struggled with financial problems. She has one younger sister who didn’t get as bullied as much as she did. Chaerin emotionally suffered a lot because of the bullying and exclusion she had to deal with day after day, year after year. Where she once had been a happy child who had felt good about herself, Cheongnam High and Gossip Girl changed everything. One day in class, when she again was the last one to find a partner for the group assignment, something inside of her broke. She believed if only she’d belong to the popular girls everything would be fine. She’d be happy again. She had watched those popular girls properly, studied how they talked, dressed and behaved and she decided to imitate them. At that time she was prepared to do almost anything so the exclusion and bullying would stop. Sadly enough it didn’t stop, it only became worse.

But Chaerin kept on wearing the make-up and more expensive clothes because she loved to do so and it made her feel stronger. She created this facade ‘CL’ for herself who was bold, flirty, knew what she wanted to have in life and went for it. The facade helped her with going through the hard times at school and life. At first she just pretended to be someone else but after years of living like that, her own timid personality mingled with that of the bold facade. It resulting in her now being a complex mixture of being an introvert and an extrovert and to be honest she doesn’t want it any other way.

In short, her time at Cheongnam High has been very troublesome. Besides the bullying and her metamorphose, the young girl also had gotten pregnant from her boyfriend at that time. Chaerin, who had been 17, decided on having an illegal abortion. She used up most of her savings for it and because she didn’t want anyone at Cheongnam High ever to find out what she had done, she broke things off instantly with the father of her child. Only her younger sister knew the truth of her “sudden illness”. Once graduated, Chaerin broke contact with almost everyone from High School. She wanted to have a fresh start somewhere else where people didn’t know who she was or were biased. She started college and finished her studies as kindergarten teacher with flying colors.

Being able to find a job not that much later, Chaerin had to work hard in order to pay of her student debts. She’d always been hopeful about paying those debts off rather quickly. Yet the odds weren’t in her favor when her parents revealed they had a created a seemingly endless pit of debts for themselves. Feeling like she needed to help her parents out, because they’d always been there for her, the young woman took on another job at a Burlesque club. When the money she earned from the two jobs combined still wasn’t enough to be able to pay the debts and keep enough for herself so she could have a life, Chaerin thought about other ways in which she could earn money. Finding out that she could learn a lot by having sex with other people she started with doing so. From then on Chaerin was always looking for easy ways to earn money. Therefore she also doesn’t make the morally right decision all the time. Now the young woman dreams of making it big in the music industry so she can make a lot of money really fast in order to finally pay off all of hers and her parents debts.

You didn’t even want to go home that night knowing that you couldn’t sleep after having heard the news. You continuously kept thinking about what to do.

Instead of going home you spent time at a 24 hr convenience store, having a quiet place to think.

Once the next day came, you went to school but you were restless from the night before. Joshua came into the room giving a short glance but didn’t say anything.

You were resting with heavy eyelids, regretting your decision of not sleeping.

Throughout the class you were half asleep, not listening to the lesson at all. By the time the class ended, you had rest your head on the desk and covered yourself with your arms.

“Hey.” A low voice said to you.

“Leave me alone please.” You breathed out.

He scoffed giving you a small smirk. “Did you get into a fight with your boyfriend or something?”

“We aren’t together!” You barked at the voice, raising your head from your desk while shooting the boy a glare.

He could see how offended and furious you were by his comment but through out he kept his cool.

Vernon was sitting on top of the desk next to you, looking down on you with the smallest of smiles. Did he like that you were angered?

“Say what you want but everyone knows better than to think you two aren’t in a relationship.”

Looking around, the room was quite dark due to the closed curtains and no one else was in the room but the two of you.

Wow..Joshua actually left you alone for once. You guessed he knew you needed space and time to think about the situation.

“Don’t you have class?” You tried changing subject.

“Don’t you?” He said back. “Im not in a rush to go anywhere right now."You mumbled, figuring you should just skip your next class.

"Me either. Guess that’s the one thing we still have in common.”

“Still?” You repeated, not sure what he meant by that.

He ignored it and spoke about another subject. “If you’re not troubling about your boyfriend, then what’s bothering you?” Vernon asked as if he cared.

“It’s none of your business. Also why would you even want to know? So you can spread more rumours and gossip to everyone. So that more people can talk shit about me being friends with Joshua?” You assumed since almost all your ex friends and fake friends have done that.

“No, I don’t think you’re that big of a deal in school. The only reason you get attention is because the little rich scumbag saved your ass.” He gave a small laugh but it was true.

You couldn’t argue back to that, neither did you feel or have the energy to defend yourself.

You let out a big breath before pushing yourself up from your seat. “I think I’m just going to go home now.” You stated before packing your things.

“Wow, the smartest student in class decides to skip her classes. What an great student.” He clapped and spoke sarcastically as you rolled your eyes at him.

“Joshua will probably make something up about me leaving.” You said, knowing your best friend all too well. Even when you two weren’t on good terms, you still cared for each other.

“You know, this is the most I’ve ever heard you spoke.” You commented, already heading out the door. He doesn’t bother to respond but you couldn’t say anything since you’ve already talked more than enough with him. You didn’t want to push him into anything too soon.

“We should talk more about the project when I’m well rested. For now..I’ll see you later I guess.” You said softly, feeling like you were talking to a wall but knowing he was listening, it didn’t bother you too much.

Days after, Joshua finally interacted with you and spoke at least a few words to you.

He opened the door for you to walk by but you didn’t thank him and tried your best not to make eye contact with him.

When Joshua finally spoke to you, it wasn’t the words you wanted to hear. “Our parents want us to have another talk about the marriage again today. You’re coming over for dinner.” Joshua told you.

So this time, it’s an even more formal meeting. “Don’t talk about that during school, people could hear you.” You said in a lowered voice as the two of you walked up the stairs.

“Why does it matter? They’re going to know about it sooner or later.”

“But I still prefer later!” You exclaimed, stopping in the middle of the stairs, looking down at Joshua as he looked up at you.

“So you’re in with the marriage thing?”

“No! I’m against it! I don’t want this to happen!”

“Why are you so against it?! Is the idea of marrying me so horrible to you?!” He started feeling hurt.

“I don’t mean it like that.” You softened your voice.

“Well it sounds like it!” He argued.

“I just…why can’t you marry someone else? Someone that you love! I want to marry someone I love, not because of some business news or money or anything else!” You tried your best explaining it to him.

He sighed, taking your hand into his. “Y/N..listen to me. This is what we have to do, for both our families. I don’t want to marry anyone else, especially none of my mom’s business partners’ daughters. We can work this out, maybe try dating? Just give it a chance, we’ve lived together before, it’s nothing so new to us. If during the time we are..together you find someone else, then tell me and I’ll do my best to talk our parents out of it.”

This was still all too much for you and you had no idea what to do but you put your trust into Joshua and nodded as he brought you into a hug.

“Everything will be okay.”

“Hey Vernon.” You tried calling out to him, eating to catch up to him but instead, he walks faster away, his headphones on as always.

You sighed, finding it difficult to talk to that boy. You’ve tried so hard to talk to him everyday since you were told about the project. Everyday, you worked on it alone because you couldn’t talk to him.

You weren’t going to give up on talking to him so you ran, putting your hand on his shoulder he swiftly turns around, glaring at you. “Don’t talk to me.” He said coldly. You furrowed your brows at him. “What’s wrong with you?!” You almost yelled at him.

He was about to turn around to walk away again, as he did the past few times but this time, he was taken back by your loud voice.

Vernon looked around to make sure no one was looking at you, there was no one in the halls anyway.

You groaned, taking in a deep breath before speaking to him again. “What do you have against me? I’ve never even talk to you before this project Vernon! How can you be mad at me when I’ve never even spoke to you before!” You felt like crying and pulling your hair out.

Like Joshua had said before, the project was too much for you on your own and you wished for the slightest bit of help.

He took a minute to reply to you, taking off his headphones slowly. “I never said I hated you or that I was angry at you.” Vernon said in a low voice. He never did talk any louder..for some reason.

You took another breath to relax yourself. You were tense and as frustrated as it is and talking to Vernon did not help at all.

“Then why don’t you talk to me? I promise, I’m a nice person no matter what other people say.” In your voice, you could hear your plead.

He decides not to answer that question so you change back to the main subject. “Are you going to help me with the project?” You asked.

“Yeah.” Vernon finally agreed to you, making a weight lift off your shoulder. 
“Meet me at the library after school.” You said before leaving, not wanting him to argue back.

“Y/N, where are you going? We’ve been looking for you! Joshua is waiting for you so you can go home.” Jun caught you in the middle of the hall while you were running across the school to the library.

He had pulled you back by grabbing your arm. You cussed at yourself for forgetting that you had to be at his house at dinner.

More importantly, you needed to go the library. You figured you would find a way to get to his place later, dinner wouldn’t be at anytime soon. “I’ll text him, thanks for telling me.” Jun nodded and let you go.

You got to the library just in time before Vernon left since he thought you weren’t there.

“Sorry, my last class is all the way on the other side of the school.” You breathed out, trying to catch your breath.

He looked at you up and down before replying. “It’s fine.”

We both went back into the library, Vernon felt uncomfortable because it really was only the two of you, excluding the librarian.

Opening your books when you sat down, he watched you. You didn’t question him for not opening his books knowing, he probably did nothing.

You opened your laptop as well, setting up everything to show him what you have done so far. Explaining what he needed to do, you ended your explanation by looking at him and saying “So do you understand?” 
He looked to you from your laptop, wide eyes. “Could you say that again? I wasn’t listening.” You hung your head lowly and sighed.

“I’ll email you everything you need to do. I’ll give you my number too so you can contact me if you have trouble, okay?” 
“I’ll just give you my email.” He said, leaning a little closer to write down his email onto your notes. His sudden movements made you freeze and just watch him.

Afterwards, you let out a small breath that you didn’t know you were holding in. “Is that it? Are we done?” At this point, he looked like he didn’t want to be there anymore with you.

You stared at him, wondering what to do. You knew if you continued working like this with him, you both won’t get anywhere with this project.

“For today but meet me at the coffee shop near by tomorrow, also after school. Is that okay with you?”

“Sure.”

“Hi Mrs and Mr Hong.” You greeted Joshua’s family once your mother and yourself entered into their lovely home.

After the welcoming, his dad told us to sit down and we all proceeded to make small talk as the food was served and placed on the massive, elongated table.

The dinner was casual and like any other you’ve had with the Hong family. You were all very familiar with each other and acted less formal, not needing to impress anyone.

“It’s so lovely to see you again Y/N, it’s been a while since the last time we’ve talked.” His dad said while you smiled back at him, nodding and agreeing.

“How have you been?”

“I’ve been doing well. School takes up most of my day so it really is hectic and busy but I’ve managed to keep my grades up. I hope your business has been doing well Mr Hong.” You said.

“It has, thank you for that.” The talk keep continuing until the really conversation started.

“Now let’s talk about business shall we? Since this is why we are here, let’s discuss about the marriage plan. Now we’ve already planned the engagement to happen in a week or so. The rings are on its way and will arrive shortly. After that, we’ll have reporters and-” His dad stated as if he was reading all this information in his mind.

“Wait, we’ve already planned the engagement date? And people are going to know about it?? So soon?” You interrupted rudely.

“Well yes, is it a problem Y/N?” Joshua gave you a look, not want you to cause any trouble, your mom did the same.

You looked back at his dad and forced a smile, folding your hands nicely in front of you. “No, No problem at all. The news was just..sudden and took me by surprise, thats all. Please continue, I’m so sorry for interrupting.” You said in your polite voice.

Everything seemed to be a surprise to you lately.
