JIANG CHENG - The Untamed
Tumblr media
PROPAGANDA:
Oh he is a bastard and i love him dearly. He has lost so much and he is so so sad and so so angry about it but he keeps moving on!!! he keeps going!!! and he raised his baby nephew - his only remaining family member when everyone else he'd ever loved died within like. 3 years - all by himself while rebuilding his sect alone with no helpfrom any other sects. Hes pissy and angry and shorttempered but he cares so much and he didn't deserve any of it. I love him so much.

I want to draw some real people again and can't decide the fandom, so. Here we go
*live action. I can't edit it anymore and now all of you know how stupid I am, ehh
I promise, I'm trying to figure out how to put some more world building notes here but my time management is super shitty rn

You ever seen the cdrama the untamed? Well in it the cdrama the main characters never kiss but you can tell they are in love just by their acting, their gestures, eye contact, their hand holding. All without having to kiss. That's kinda what I want if they make zutara happen in the live action. Zutara doesn't need a big romantic kiss to happen.
The Untamed is my favorite series in any category. I also read the book and watched the animated version. Also, Wangxian is one of my favorite couples. And honestly, like you I don't need a kiss for Zutara to be romantic. They simply have to remove Kataang and amplify the romantic coding already present in Zutara in the original material and we're good.

started The Untamed and I'm like 9 episodes in and can't help but wish I started the donghua first since there are shorter and fewer episodes. the pacing is just kind of odd there are a few moments that last longer than I'd like and it rly just comes down to the fact I am not used to Chinese live action shows so I am really trying to push through

My personal headcanons/interpretations of the physical differences between Wei Wuxian's original body and Mo Xuanyu's body.
Wei Wuxian's original body:
Tall, broad shoulders, and a very athletic build with a lot of toned muscle
Fine, wavy hair texture
Ink-black hair
Black eyes
Sharp facial features with high cheekbones and cat-like eyes
Long fingers
More of a tanned skin tone because of all the sun he gets at Lotus Pier
Scars on his hands, wrists, and fingers from getting bitten by dogs when he would take food from them
I imagine that wwx would have a lot of little scars from playing rough as a kid, tiny thin slashes of silver scattered throughout his body
WWX's body was built for strength, but not necessarily for endurance
An inhumanly high pain tolerance
Has a chipped tooth near the back of his mouth that you could only see when he smiled wide enough
Dimples
Freckles that become more prominent when he gets more sun, but are especially concentrated on his shoulders and the back of his neck
Mo Xuanyu's body:
Short and skinny from malnutrition; probably has like 50 different kinds of vitamin deficiencies
Paler complexion, almost pasty
Thicker hair texture, which makes it look fluffier, and more unruly; it's a pain in the ass to take care of; #1 in the world for worst bed-head, gets tangled like you wouldn't believe
Delicate, more "feminine"-looking facial features, like wider eyes, Cupid's bow lips, and an overall softer-looking face
Gray eyes
Dark brown hair
Much more flexible, can probably twist himself into a pretzel whenever he gets bored
Prone to undereye shadows from poor sleep
Body better built for stamina once it gets better trained; even when he does get more muscles, it's more wirey than shredded; slender and lean
Low pain tolerance
Poor circulation and is more prone to get cold
Lightweight drinker, much to his dismay
Nose is crooked from getting broken at least once
Probably has anemia; bruises very easily
Has a couple moles scattered along his body
MXY definitely has the better ass
Both wwx and mxy have a complicated relationship with food and hunger, but mxy's body especially has gotten so used to running on little food that wwx (in mxy's body) has a hard time recognizing when he's hungry until he nearly passes out from lack of energy. I imagine that thanks to being adopted by the Jiangs and being taken care of by his siblings, over time, wwx's body was able to recover from running on starvation mode 24/7, while mxy was never able to have that recovery period, so his body is still accustomed to operating on little to no food.
I imagine that wwx and mxy are like two different kinds of goth; different shades of creepy, and beautiful in different ways. wwx would be more like a vampire, while mxy would channel antique haunted doll; sharp and powerful vs soft and delicate. wwx in his original body is the danger you expect, the danger you run from on sight, while wei ying in mxy's body is underestimated, unexpected, the kind of danger you would never see coming until it's too late.
If you're like me and also enjoy stories that involve Wei Ying adjusting to life in his new body, then here are some fics with that exact premise:

MDZS thoughts; adaptation and change
I may be leaning too much into my literature class roots, but I could (and may end up) writing an essay on how the live action version of MDZS ‘The Untamed’ drastically altered just sooo much to do with everything, including characterisation and my personal favourite to rant about; themes and concepts (if you’ve seen ANY of my other posts, you’ll know I talk a lot about this). I’ll have to remind myself to write ‘show’ or ‘live action’ instead of ‘film’ because my literature class has been studying change through adaption of Jane Austen novels into films and that’s really what boosted me to write this. As a preface, yes, this post will contain spoilers from both the original novel AND the live action show, and if anyone has made a post like this before, please link it to me because I would love to see someone talk about it!
To begin with, the characterisation is both parts my favourite and my worst enemy in the show. The live action completely changed like, everything to do with Wei Wuxian and his character arc. Both the novel and the show provide an introduction to his character based off his flirtatious ways, charismatic personality, and insane talents, but the more the show goes on the more it delves away from the original Wei Wuxian in the novel, who deals with tremendous amounts of guilt and shame for his actions, while carefully trying to keep up his balancing act, before finally just giving up and having his corpses eat him or whatever. It’s such a stupid thing to nitpick I know, but it's so important to the themes of MDZS (which is something I'll talk about later). Because there's a distinct lack of disgust Wei Wuxian feels towards himself for the atrocities he commits, his character deviates from someone who is working towards self-acceptance and penance for his actions, to an upright genius who has never done any wrong, a victim in everyone else's scheming. But that in itself is doing a disservice to him, because he did bad things, he and everyone in the cultivation world acknowledges this, but he worked past that! He died for his sins, he came back 13 years later and actively fixed his behaviours, took responsibility for his actions, and learned to live with himself. Wei Wuxian’s character development is incredibly important, and to make him some type of sacrificial lamb who has always been the victim eliminates half the premise of the novel. That’s not to say that I don’t like Xiao Zhan’s interpretation or acting though! I definitely think he’s incredible and did so good as Wei Wuxian, but the live action is so messy compared to the novel, so much so that it’s quite difficult to get to the core of the story.
On the topic of acting, I do quite like Lan Wangji’s live action interpretation, because dear lord, physical cues make it sooo much easier to like him (respectfully though, I am Lan Wangji’s biggest fan). In the novel it’s REALLY hard to move on from the fact that he has no outward reactions or anything to say that isn't ‘Wei Ying!’, but the drama did an incredible job of portraying how complex he actually is. Seeing his minute facial expressions in the drama was so important to his growth as a character, and the illustration of his growth and maturity is only emphasised through the live action (especially when they had the screentime to give him individual scenes with his brother to highlight the fact he’s not just a love interest for Wei Wuxian, he’s his Own Individual Character who is so cool!).
All of MXTX’s works stick to a central theme; redemption. Just think about it for a second. MDZS follows Wei Wuxian and his works towards forgiving himself for his actions as the Yiling Patriarch while also acknowledging that he was doing what he could to protect those he cared about (and very occasionally, himself), Lan Wangji silently standing by him in solidarity. In TGCF, Xie Lian strives over the course of 800 years to forgive himself and finds solace in Hua Cheng and his unconditional love and devotion. In Scum Villain, Shen Qingqiu’s very existence is defined by the grave (read: pickle pot) fate had begun to bury him in upon his transmigration, spending years attempting to reach salvation after the sins the original Shen Qingqiu had committed, eventually realising that he owed it to Luo Binghe to be better, to stay by his side, to help him find peace with his past actions. And unfortunately, this theme isn’t portrayed very well in the live action. The show places far more emphasis on how Wei Wuxian was always right regardless, meaning there was no need for the guilt and repentance. Of course, he deserves the world, and I would pluck the stars out of the sky should he ask (Lan Wangji Momenta), but it doesn’t erase the fact that this is a vital point to his character! He isn’t supposed to be invulnerable and have an instant happy ending! He and Lan Wangji work like dogs, unravelling decades worth of lies, solving a couple murders, ridding the world of a few serial killers, and so on and so forth before any type of safety is given, any type of redemption is reached.
Which brings me to another key theme in MDZS specifically. The idea of hard work. “Oh, but lryghe, this is such a reach, what are you even talking about?” LET ME COOK! Please! Nothing in MDZS comes easily, ever, which is great writing on MXTX’s part because who wants a novel where everything goes right every single time, and nothing is ever difficult? Things just so happen to work out for every other one of MXTX’s protagonists, but in MDZS everyone suffers for like, a really long time. I’d say about 15 years specifically (counting the war and its aftermath). Similarly to the novel, the live action delves into the idea of hard work and suffering as part of a process to achieve what you want. All characters are actively working towards what they want, they all have clear motivations, and they struggle, horrifically so in places. This is my third favourite thing about the live action, how it actually managed to bring something salvageable to the table in terms of themes and key ideas. Good for them!
My all-time favourite thing in terms of the live action adaptation is the physicality of it. The characters are right there, and the acting clearly explains their motivations in places. The costumes are incredible visual cues to their thoughts, which is something we don’t see in the MDZS novel since its all from Wei Wuxian’s perspective. I do have to say though, some characterisation moments does in fact piss me off astronomically. Why did Jiang Cheng have to have some type of tragic romance with Wen Qing? Why was Jin Guangyao the one pulling the strings to kill Yanli? I appreciate CQL so much because of this physicality but it could do without some of it I do think.
I ended up writing an essay. I’m sorry. If only my literature teacher could see me now... Mrs [redacted because what if I get sued?!], please give me an even higher grade on my next assessment, I deserve it. Also, this one isn’t as well thought out as it could have been, you’ll have to forgive me. I am in fact someone who spends too much time writing these thoughts instead of, oh I don’t know, focusing on my classes.

I'm on my mdzs bs again
So I have a question
We all can agree as a group that you don't mess with Nie brothers for different reason for each of them , right?
Because you just look at Nie mingjue and come to the conclusion that he will mess you up
But with nie huaisang , you could look at him and think that he's no threat. Sadly you're wrong because he will mess you up. Just in a different way some would say even better way.
I stated my case

every time I see someone say that "jc always hated wwx" I feel like I'm losing like 10 years of my life. I don't understand how people can simplify the situation so much.

Thinking about the power of miscommunication and its dramatic consequence in MDZS, not just romantic (wangxian), but also between Wei Wuxian and Jin Zixuan.
Let's talking about Jin Zixuan's tragic death: Zixuan arrives in the middle of the conflict, he tries to calm things down as the best he can by arguing with his cousin and put some sense in his head (impossible), and then zixun destroys wwx's gift for jin ling and wwx tries to attack zixun out of anger. And then we have Zixuan being confused by that act and trying to stop wwx, thinking he got crazy "out of nowhere", because he didn’t know what the box is and why wwx was so angry! Since Zixuan failed with his imbecile cousin, he tries to calm wwx down.
And the miscommunication continues. Wwx thought Zixuan is involved too in that ambush and he's trying to play tricks with him by asking to go to Jin Lintai. Actually Zixuan was just trying to settle the situation down and taking wwx to his wife, Jiang Yanli, wwx's sister. Again wwx thinks it's a trap but while Zixuan is not the most intelligent person, he offers this plan out of good faith. When wwx will explain with calm how he's not involved in zixun's curse, everything will be fine. Little he knows how his family is fucked up and wanted to murder wwx since the beginning. They just wanted an excuse.
Wwx knows the truth too, he knows if he goes to Jin Lintai under these circumstances, we'll be super dead. But what he misjudged is zixuan not wanting him dead! At the same time Zixuan misjudged the situation and thinking that if wwx will stop wen ning by being a super weapon, then the archers will stop too and the attacks from both fronts will cease. He wasn't there at the beginning and he didn’t know the archers attacked wwx out of nowhere and with no provocation by wwx. Actually he saw himself wwx attacking zixun first "out of nowhere". Both these characters have prejudices against each other (zixuan thinking wwx is crazy and too stubborn to search a non mortal solution; wwx thinking he can't trust zixuan) for their past hate, and both failed to see each other's true intentions.
Mix of consequences and factors caused zixuan's death (no mistake, wwx is definitely the responsible in the novel), but damn the miscommunication (worsened by wwx's bad mental state), played hard on that conflict.
It was a predictable and tragic incident, though wwx didn’t trust zixuan or never liked him (and vice versa) he never intended to harm him!
But of course no one understood that, because wwx threatened to kill zixuan in the past, so of course he really wanted to kill him this time. But he didn’t. Again misunderstandings (on purpose or not). The only one wwx hasn't miscommunication with is Yanli. Yeah she was in deep mourning for her husband's death, but she didn’t blame wwx, never did (these would have been her final words, if only...), because she knows wwx never intended to do an intentional harm to zixuan! Tragically wwx died thinking yanli would have blamed him too. Not saying that he didn’t think of himself being guilty over that killing, he does, he knows he's the responsable one, because wen ning was HIS weapon, and never excused it. (Wwx always attacked people who attacked him first. Fair enough. Zixuan's death was the only unfair one, because none of them intended harm.)
End of my point. Now going back to fanfics where everybody lives
