You know that verbal tic Louis Ferreira has? Where he starts speaking, gets two-three words in, and then restarts the sentence? I've seen him do it in multiple roles and he makes it sound perfectly natural, but damn, how do I get that effect down on paper without annoying the reader with constant stoppages?

“We’re not going to pretend to be divorced just so Chris can get into a summer camp, Buck,” Eddie says, trying to sound convincing even as he starts to feel his resolution crumbling inside of him. “Why not?” Buck asks, sounding genuinely baffled, like he can’t understand Eddie’s refusal at all. And how does Eddie begin to explain the irrationality of his rational denial? He can’t tell Buck the real reason he can’t go through with it. He can’t tell him without having to reach into his chest, clawing out his heart, setting it down at Buck’s feet still beating, and saying, “Because the only thing worse than loving you knowing I can’t have you would be having to pretend like I didn’t love you enough to keep you with me forever.” (or the fake ex husbands to fake husbands to husbands fic.)

do y'all ever think that eddie might have figured out how important buck is to him when he got shot, since he was reaching out to buck. and do y'all ever think he spent the next months trying to figure out how to get better and do better by chris and buck. and do y'all ever think he reached a point where he was finally gonna tell buck, but then buck got struck by lightning and eddie had to let that chance pass.

What makes a fic 'successful' in your opinion? - ideally, enjoying what you write, feeling good about it, writing for yourself. for me also, the characters I am depicting being well characterized/represented as well. people enjoying it is obv the goal with sharing it, but i try not to make that the Main Thing about a fic. it is great to see a fic be enjoyed and commented on etc., but even if a fic were to "do well" but I hated the fic, I wouldn't consider that a success imo
