Here’s something that bugs me: We don’t have any examples of normal hobbit poetry.
Almost every song and poem in LotR and The Hobbit that was composed by a hobbit was composed by Bilbo, and those few that weren’t were composed by Frodo and Sam, who learned everything they know about reading and writing from Bilbo, and therefore are undeniably influenced by his stylistic choices. Furthermore, it’s clear in the text that Bilbo’s poetry is quite unusual, by hobbit standards: before Bilbo’s birthday party speech it says, “He was liable to to drag in bits of what he called poetry,” when outlining the hobbits’ misgivings about said speech, and as Frodo, Sam, and Pippin sing their walking song the text points out that the subject matter is odd; most hobbits would choose a song about food or bed.
Bilbo got his interest in poetry and composing poetry sometime during the events of The Hobbit, and personally I believe it was likely sparked during his time in the Elvenking’s halls, where he was exposed to more Elvish music than probably anywhere else, and this music would not have been toned down or chosen to appeal to visitors, as they didn’t know he was there. Bilbo’s poetry seems to take a lot of its stylistic choices from Elvish poetry; this is supported by the fact that Sam recites some poetry about Gil-galad that he believes Bilbo wrote, even though he only translated it: clearly it carries some similarities to Bilbo’s usual choices that Sam would have picked up on.
But as far as the kinds of poetry that other hobbits enjoy, there’s only really one line to go on, and it’s that one comparing the protagonists’ choice of song to other hobbits’: “They began to hum softly, as hobbits have a way of doing as they walk along, especially when they are drawing near to home at night. With most hobbits it is a supper-song or a bed-song; but these hobbits hummed a walking-song (though not, of course, without any mention of supper and bed).” This is it. This is the only mention of hobbit taste in poetry throughout eleven hundred pages. One line about subject matter and function and absolutely nothing on form. For all we know hobbit musical wordsmithery could revolve almost entirely around bredliks.

No End Time Lapse Video over on my Youtube :)
Image Transcription:
[Below the video link is two images, a sketch and a finished digital painting. It is of a train tunnel in the middle of the woods, the surroundings are green and cool with a pool of water covering most of the tracks. Ripples in the water create circular patterns as the tunnel is obscured by a purple haze filled with abstract swirling shapes which reflect a rainbow opalescence. Before the tunnel stand three children in matching yellow hoodies looking into the mysterious portal.]
