my only issue with the Rothko On Paper exhibit is the curators did not talk about paper

like the fact that these Rothkos are On Paper is significant enough to be included in the title. A lot of the plaques mentioned that Rothko thought very highly of his works On Paper (he would gift them to friends and display them in his own house, and made some commissioned pieces on paper too)

there definitely is an idear in museamy art that paper=practice=not as important and on the one hand it pisses me right off due to papercraft being my primary medium (i'm a generalist but if I had to pick just one I'd go with paper) but on the other hand I get it because paper is cheaper than canvas and Museams Are Full Of Canvasses From The Old Masters. See also: the Cezanne Drawing exhibit at the NYC MoMA in 2021, a lot of those were legit sketchbook/practice/unfinished pieces unlike the Rothko On Paper pieces which were all (except for four) finished pieces

I legitimately don't think this is from my bias as a papercraft or science person, I do think this is an oversight on the curators that they didn't talk about the paper. The plaques would say wove paper water color paper or just like not mention the type of paper. The paints were tempura or oil or water color or ink and all of those sit on top or soak into different kinds of paper in different ways

idk I just think that the material that the art is on is part of the art, it's more than just a holder for the art. and I think that's especially true for Rothko's technique of diluting and layering paints. There's a clear disconnect that the works being on paper is important enough to be part of the title of the exhibit but not important enough to be talked about within the exhibit.

the selection of the pieces was great, the order that the pieces were presented in was great, the quotes from Rothko and his personal history that was included on the plaques were great but like why even call it Rothko On Paper if you're only going to talk only about Rothko and nothing about paper. Like ok he thought there was no hierarchy between paper and canvas but WHY? what are the differences between paper and canvas?

#i'd love to see a statistical analysis showing which paint medium he used on which type of paper/canvas #like clearly he used oils on both paper and canvas #but what about ink? tempura? water color?#mark rothko

Русский художник, представитель символизма и модерна, Иван Мясоедов (1881, Харьков – 1953, Буэнос-Айрес) родился в семье знаменитого художника-передвижника Григория Мясоедова. Был внебрачным сыном художника Григория Мясоедова и художницы Ивановой. Еще ребенком Иван Мясоедов начал учиться рисованию в частной школе, организованной его отцом. В 15 поступил в Московское училище живописи, позднее — в Императорскую Академию художеств. Он мало чем походил на своего отца, и никакой преемственности в искусстве не было. Все, что было мило Григорию Мясоедову, Иван Мясоедов презирал (и наоборот). Его привлекали мифологические сюжеты, эпический размах, подвиги, боги, герои — все то, от чего бежали передвижники. Художник Иван Мясоедов был прекрасным профессиональным гравером, что стало причиной большой беды. Проживая с женой в бедствующей Германии в 20-е годы, он рисовал и печатал английские фунты- за что и был арестовыван как фальшивомонетчик. Три года Иван проводит в Моабитской тюрьме, где расписывает тюремную церковь. Выйдя на свободу, он пишет целый ряд ностальгических полотен и в 1938 году бежит с семьей в Лихтенштейн по поддельному чешскому паспорту (сам «нарисовал») на имя «профессора Зотова». В княжестве Иван Мясоедов стал придворным художником, создал великолепные эскизы почтовых марок. В Лихтенштейне художник вновь попал под арест за подделку государственных кредитных бумаг, а всю его семью лишили гражданства княжества. После непродолжительного заключения Мясоедов с семьей в 1953 году переезжает в Аргентину. По приезду в Буэнос-Айрес Иван Мясоедов внезапно тяжело заболел и умер от рака печени. Ему было 73 года.

Russian artist, representative of symbolism and modernism, Ivan Myasoedov (1881, Kharkov - 1953, Buenos Aires) was born in the family of the famous Itinerant artist Grigory Myasoedov. He was the illegitimate son of the artist Grigory Myasoedov and the artist Ivanova. As a child, Ivan Myasoedov began to study drawing at a private school organized by his father. At 15 he entered the Moscow School of Painting, and later the Imperial Academy of Arts. He was little like his father, and there was no continuity in art. Everything that was nice to Grigory Myasoedov, Ivan Myasoedov despised (and vice versa). He was attracted by mythological stories, epic scope, exploits, gods, heroes - everything that the Wanderers fled from.

The artist Ivan Myasoedov was an excellent professional engraver, which caused great trouble. Living with his wife in poverty-stricken Germany in the 1920s, he drew and printed English pounds, for which he was arrested as a counterfeiter. Ivan spends three years in Moabit prison, where he paints the prison church. Upon his release, he painted a whole series of nostalgic canvases and in 1938 he fled with his family to Liechtenstein using a fake Czech passport (he “drew it” himself) in the name of “Professor Zotov.”

In the principality, Ivan Myasoedov became a court artist and created magnificent sketches of postage stamps. In Liechtenstein, the artist was again arrested for forging government credit papers, and his entire family was deprived of citizenship of the principality. After a short imprisonment, Myasoedov and his family moved to Argentina in 1953. Upon arrival in Buenos Aires, Ivan Myasoedov suddenly became seriously ill and died of liver cancer. He was 73 years old.

#text #polls #im rly curious abt this #i havent painted in foreverrr :{ i took an oil painting class that i loved but working with paint that never dries was difficult #but also helpful to be able to wipe it off even like a week after i fucked up lol #i liked it tho !! i wish id gotten to spend more time on my final bc it was so fun but i wasnt quite done #literally went in with a paint pen like last month to touch up some stuff #might go try and finish it fully but idkkkk. i dont have oil paints so id have to do it in acrylic and idk how easy itd be #ANYWAy #ive never worked with ink before and i only have worked with oil paint in that class #but the other three ive used a lot and when it comes to on Paper and not canvas #acrylic dries fast which is difficult for me #and watercolor dries slow bc. thats water. and it doesnt always go where i want it to #so usually i prefer gouache bc its a little thicker but not too thick and it dries quick but not too quick. a happy medium #just like goldilocks #on canvas tho i usually prefer acrylic #i think bc i get scared to use up my gouache paints on a bigger canvas #^saying all this and i havent painted in months. </3 #im not even particularly good at it i just like it. makes me happy #waugh. its nice out today maybe i'll go out and paint :} it miught rain tho #so who knows

Oils dissolve silicone, right? If I got a silicone bowel to hold the water that cleans my paintbrushes, I wouldn't be able to use my (water miscible, meaning I don't need paint thinner or mineral spirits) oil paints in it, yeah?

#back when i was just using watercolors i used just two small regular bowls for brush cleaning #and when the water had evaporated i just cleaned the paint out with a damp paper towel #but since i started using acrylic paints more the left-over paint just cakes onto the bowls after the water evaporates #i had hoped the bowls were smooth enough i could just peel the dried paint off but i guess the coating has tiny pores or something #and now when i dip my brushes in the bowls tiny bits of the dried paint will flake off and get on the brush and then on the canvas #i know people use silicone containers for acrylic paints because you can just pop/peel the dried paint off #I've seen advice to use those silicone popit fidget toys as acrylic palettes even #anyway i use water miscible oil paints from time to time but if I'm right i can't use a silicone water dish for those
