A part of growing up is realizing that sometimes things that work for the majority/most people...just don't for you.
This post is based on me accepting that some "productivity tools" just aren't productive for me, personally
And that's alright. Just need to find anothe one, or another way to go about it
Not every tool works for everyone
I tried Notion for writing and keeping my ideas organized. And on paper / in theory, it's all cool and good and writeblr even has templates for it
But it just doesn't work for me
Just not comfortable.
So I'm planning on taking what I've done so far out and putting it all somewhere else.
Similarly, I keep adding to Google Tasks but too messy and my things get lost.
People are different and growing up is learning, understanding, and accepting that sometimes stuff that works for others just doesn't work for you
One reason against Notion and Google Tasks could be that I'm probably ADD, or neurodivergent at the very least
Right now, here's what I'm trying out:
Google sheets for story. 1 sheet for characters, 1 for outline/plot, 1 for dialogue ideas (did this for 1 novel and it worked really well!)
Discord for ideas. I made a server that's just me. And channels are collections like #ideas #resources. Then planning on creating threads inside them. So a thread called writing in #resources that's that
I was addicted to Pinterest and have so many boards and stuff organized. It's an issue finding stuff but stuff's there and I might try to make use of the boards and collections I have rn, instead of adding more
Moving Notion to Google Docs before I organize and move to Discord
Using Ywriter for scene organization and heavy stories
Using Google docs for actual writing (I do this anyway)
Zotero for academic referencing, researching, collection (I used this before and enjoyed it. Right now I'm using it for a research paper I'm doing just for fun ie I'm not affiliated with any uni or organization, it's just my new hyperfixation and I'd like to write a paper :))

:)))))
I downloaded yWriter and have been using it for this proper book idea I have.
It's desktop only. I started using it because I'm too addicted to my phone and want something structured and Google Docs keeps crashing.
And I found a solution for one of the problems I had!
The 2 problems I had were:
#1
It's desktop only. Which I keep feeling sad about but then that just shows my addiction.
And I'm listening to Brandon Sanderson's creative writing playlist and he emphasizes consistency and setting a time to write. And yWriter will help me with that, I hope, because I need to utilize the time I'm on desktop because now.
So, that's not really a problem for me, per se because I'm looking forward to this (feature not a bug lol).
#2
Spellchecker.
It has a spellchecker which turns all my incorrect spellings red, that's fine. The problem is: it doesn't show me the right spelling that I can just click and be done with — I have to manually retype it (like olden times).
But I found a solution! :D
I've moved to Firefox and absolutely enjoying all the extensions 🤗 (and the ad-less YouTube I get from one of them is fire 🔥💅)
And I downloaded a spellchecker extension because it had the "recommended" badge, instead of going for generic Grammarly
It's called LanguageTool
Edit: As per last week (today's 10th July 2023) LanguageTool introduced a new feature call rephrasing that uses OpenAI which, according to LanguageTool's privacy policy, reserves the right to store your data. and I couldn't find out how to opt out. I have deleted it and contacted LanguageTool and Firefox.
Made a post about it here.
I checked it out on Google Docs while proofreading a doc for work, and I liked “picky reader” option.
I went to their website and they had a desktop version! AND, while it doesn't work with yWriter directly, I can still use it for it! I just need to:
Select my text in yWriter (Ctrl+A)
Use the shortcut that opens that text in LanguageTool (I set it to Ctrl+Q)
Use the tool
And then copy-paste back in yWriter!
This is awesome! And LanguageTool is private and doesn't track (it was recommended by Firefox/Mozilla so it better be lol) which is a plus because I'm big on internet privacy now :)

ChatGPT is not a magic wand that can do anything you want.
ChatGPT is still limited by the data it was trained on, the quality of the input it receives, and the complexity of the task it is asked to do.
ChatGPT may not always produce accurate, relevant, or coherent outputs. It may also generate outputs that are biased, offensive, or harmful.
This is where prompt engineering comes in.
Prompt Engineering is the skill of designing and creating effective prompts that guide ChatGPT to produce the best possible output for your task.
Prompt engineering is important because it can significantly affect the quality and usefulness of ChatGPT’s outputs.
A well-designed prompt can help ChatGPT understand your task better, access relevant information from its knowledge base, generate coherent and consistent outputs, and avoid errors or pitfalls.
ChatGPT prompt engineering is not an exact science, but rather an art that requires experimentation and iteration.
There is no one-size-fits-all formula for creating effective prompts for every task and every output.
However, there are some general principles and best practices that can guide you in your prompt engineering process.

tumblr tuesday: velociraptors, our beloveds
It's national velociraptor awareness day! What is there that we need to be aware of regarding velociraptors? No idea! We're just here to enjoy renditions of these swift plunderers from 73ish million years ago the raptors, not the art.
And before you get up in arms about the specification of some of these little guys, we've broadened the scope to include all types of dromaeosaurs...because the art was pretty, and frankly, mistakes were already made before we got here ,we're looking at you, Jurassic Park.
So, please enjoy this raptor and raptor-adjacent art. And, while we have you, can the paleo plushie experts please take a look and see if they can help this user find another Hammer?

Freeconvert.com offers lots of conversion tools. The one I use most is for converting video files to audio, since it's easier for me to record video of birdsong with the camera than it is for me to find an actual quality sound recording app for my crappy old phone. So then I just convert it to audio, then post it to iNaturalist. They also offer video tools and document tools. too many to list, since I haven't even looked at them all yet. I've also used the video cropper tool.
Only downside to Freeconvert so far is with documents, you have to convert it to a PDF first, then you can turn it into an epub (ebook).
Convertio.co on the other hand lets you convert documents directly into an epub, without making you turn them into a PDF first. Possibly it just combined those two steps into one. It also does a bunch of other stuff but I haven't looked at any of the other tools.
Being able to make epubs yourself means you can easily turn your own writing into ebooks to read on your phone, without needing internet access. If you have an Android phone, I recommend the ReadEra app, it' sreally nice. I don't know if it's available for iPhone, or in all countries, but if you search "free ebook reader" in the app store, you should be able to find some other ones!
Convertio also lets you share files through links after you convert them, and the link will work for 24 hours before the files are removed to save space. I think if you sign up for an actual account it'll let you store them later, but I'm too lazy and I don't need to do that.
