COVER REVEAL - MISTRESS OF LIES
Tumblr media
The cover for my debut is HERE.
Thank you to Abel Klaer for the gorgeous art. He did a fantastic job of capturing Shan, my mean, villainous girl in all her glory, and I can’t wait for you to meet her (and the two great loves of her life) next August!
Descriptions and links below the cut!
FATE IS A CRUEL MISTRESS The daughter of a powerful but disgraced Blood Worker, Shan LeClaire has spent her entire life perfecting her blood magic, building her network of spies, and gathering every scrap of power she could. Now, to protect her brother, she assassinates their father and takes her place at the head of the family. And that is only the start of her revenge. Samuel Hutchinson is a bastard with a terrible gift. When he stumbles upon the first victim of a magical serial killer, he's drawn into the world of magic and intrigue he's worked so hard to avoid - and is pulled deeply into the ravenous and bloodthirsty court of the vampire king. Tasked by the Eternal King to discover the identity of the killer cutting a bloody swath through the city, Samuel, Shan and mysterious Royal Bloodworker Isaac find themselves growing ever closer to each other. But Shan's plans are treacherous, and as she lures Samuel into her complicated web of desire, treason and vengeance, he must decide if the good of their nation is worth the cost of his soul.

I'm reading an advance copy of @erinmevans Erin M. Evan's next book, Relics of Ruin, and I love it so far! These are sketches I've done while reading it, with more to come! If you haven't read Empire of Exiles, I really recommend it. It's an original fantasy world with a gripping mystery, great characters, and a really intriguing threat that keeps you guessing.
For those of you who are D&D fans, Erin was the creator of the Brimstone Angels books set in the Forgotten Realms. Those books are also fantastic too, and I'm loving Erin's newer works where she's making really vibrant and diverse peoples and cultures. I want to know more about everyone, especially so I can draw them.
Empire of Exiles came out in 2022, and Relics is out later this year, so if you haven't had a chance to read it, pick it up!

The Jasad Heir by Sara Hashem
The Jasad Heir by Sara Hashem is a beautifully textured Egyptian-inspired high fantasy book that rips your heart apart and puts it back together again. As an orphaned apothecary’s assistant in a small town, no one expects Sylvia to hide powerful magic and an even more powerful lineage. When the kingdom of Jasad fell to the kingdom of Nizahl a decade ago, everyone believed all members of the royal family fell with it, but the magically adept Jasad heir escaped, and she has been on the run ever since. Her magic has been dampened for years so typically there is little threat it will be detected, but one day Arin, the Nizahl heir, discovers her power anyway. He cannot imagine she is lost royalty, but Arin knows her magic is powerful and can tell her strength will serve his political goals. With knowledge of Sylvia’s powers and Jasadi background, he blackmails her into becoming his champion for the Alcalah, a deadly series of trials where each kingdom has one chance at selecting a future victor that will bring pride to their country. Now she must keep her identity as the lost Jasad heir a secret from the strict and inscrutable heir, even as they grow inextricably close. If she wins, Sylvia will have enough money and status as the Alcalah victor to hide for the rest of her life, but as Jasadi rebels and her own conscience demand she takes up her throne, she has to decide if she is willing to live a life of peace at the cost of her people. The book is filled with magic, political intrigue, friendship, enemies-to-lovers tension, and a magical competition to tie it all together. I could not recommend this book more.
I must say, Hashem’s debut is an impressive feat of the genre. The magic system and world-building are top-tier for those looking for fantasy with multi-kingdom political intrigue and well-developed characters. Everyone and everything introduced to the book is there for a reason and they all have well-developed backstories and interior lives. I believe the book follows an iceberg approach to fantasy where we see a fraction of the worldbuilding that goes into crafting such an intricate system where everything feels real. Small details from clothing, food, and value differences between kingdoms give life to the people and the places they inhabit.
Sylvia is a wonderful character. She is a believable traumatized 20-year-old. The book is a good recommendation for fans of New Adult-aged protagonists, but it is firmly adult fantasy. She is comfortable with murdering for survival and capable of doing so. Even without consistent access to her powers, she is clever and calculating and knows how to wield a bevy of weapons. It doesn’t stop her from caring about a select group of people including her two best friends Sefa and Marek who follow her throughout the book. They have their own story that I will not spoil but rest assured they are wonderful and Sefa is on the ace spectrum for anyone who wants to know.
Now, there is also an enemies-to-lovers subplot in the book between the two heirs, Sylvia and Arin but it is a slow burn, backburner, low-spice (but high-heat) romance. Both characters have a certain level of touch aversion one due to a magic curse, the other due to a traumatic childhood. They are also two people who don’t trust or love with any level of ease. Nonetheless, they care about each other, and the growing care leads me to believe in their chemistry. I can find no confirmation that Sylvia was written to be on the ace spectrum so please correct me if I am wrong, but I read her character as demisexual or somewhere on the ace spectrum. I am completely on board with this ship either way.
Training for the Alcalah and the Alcalah itself is so well done. Anyone who likes a good high-stakes fantasy competition will be satisfied with this storyline. The secrets and political intrigue create ongoing tension throughout the book and I cannot wait to see what is going to happen in book 2.
All that is to say this book is absolutely wonderful. Thank you Orbit Books for providing me with an arc for an honest review and I would highly recommend you preorder yourself a copy because when The Jasad Heir by Sara Hashem comes out on July 18, 2023, you will want to get started.

📚 Beautiful Books part 7.3: The Witcher Series by Andrzej Sapkowski 📚
This is part 3 of my Witcher books review, so before you go any farther, go read part 1 and 2! I'm going to talk about all 8 of them in a 3 part post, since I can't add more than 30 pictures per post. So get yourself some hot cocoa and a bagel because this might be long lol.
⚠️Note that there will be some spoilers from either the books, series or games so, read at your own risk.⚠️
Tumblr media
As you might know from a previous post, I got the 1st 7 books for my birthday from my dad, and the last one today like I already said, and they are published by Orbit.
7) The Lady of The Lake:
On the sleeve, we see a lady sitting on a rock in front of a unicorn on a purple background. Who is that lady? I don't know. Maybe the so called Lady of the Lake, or Ciri since she's holding a sword. The title is written in pink and I love the contrast over the purple background.
Tumblr media
The back, same as the front with a quote. "The legend grew, The listeners-in a veritable trance-drank in the carefully measured word of the storyteller telling of the Witcher and the sorceress. Of the Tower of the Swallow. Of Ciri, the witcher girl with the scar on her face. Of Kelpie, the enchanted black mare. Of the Lady of the Late."
Tumblr media
The side of the sleeve has a close up of the cover on the lady and the unicorn at the very top (or bottom), with white and black lettering on a pink background.
Tumblr media
On the left of the cover without the sleeve, is a purple spine and a black background with another quote, written in a shiny silver. "Destiny is hope being full of hope, believing that what is meant to happen will happen." - Philippa Eilhart
Tumblr media
The spine is purple with the title, written in shiny silver.
Tumblr media
And the back is black with the purple of the spine.
Tumblr media
The end paper is the same map of The Witcher universe, but with tints of whatever this colour's called for the details lol. In the light, it's blue but without lighting, I see it purple lol.
Tumblr media
The text is the same size in all 8 books, with the title at the top of every 2nd page written in black, with a total of 546 pages.
Tumblr media
My favourite part of this book is the colors. Purple is one of my favourite colors and everything about it is in some sort of purple shade. It's so pretty. *.*
Fun fact about The Witcher: Joey Batey (Jaskier) hates “Toss a Coin to Your Witcher”, because he heard it too much. It got kind of redundant after a while for him. But still one of my favourites. 💜
8) Season of Storms:
And finally, last but certainly not least, the last of the series. On the sleeve, we see our Geralt in all his glory, getting ready to unsheathe his sword, on a turquoise background.
Tumblr media
The back, same as the front, but with a bit of a close up and a quote. "But to blame mages for all adversities and disasters is probably an exaggeration. You're talking about natural phenomena, after all. It's simply that kind of season. A season of storms."
Tumblr media
The side of the sleeve has a close up of the cover on Geralt's face at the very top (or bottom), with white and black lettering on a turquoise background.
Tumblr media
On the left of the cover without the sleeve, is a light blue spine and a black background with another quote, written in a shiny silver. "It's good to feel fear. If you feel fear it means there's something to be feared, so be vigilant. Fear doesn't have to be overcome. Just don't yield to it. And you can learn from it." - Geralt of Rivia
Tumblr media
The spine is light blue with the title, written in shiny silver.
Tumblr media
And the back is black with the blue of the spine.
Tumblr media
The end paper is the same map of The Witcher universe, but in blue for the details.
Tumblr media
The text is the same size in all 8 books, with the title at the top of every 2nd page written in black, with a total of 421 pages.
Tumblr media
My favourite part of this book is the sleeve cover art. Geralt looks so determined in it. And I love all the little details of his attire.
Fun fact about Andrzej Sapkowski: Despite the success of The Witcher book series, Sapkowski originally found it difficult to support himself as a writer. But, the popularity of The Witcher video game series helped him become one of the best-known fantasy writers today. 💙
Final thoughts:
So there you have it folks. The complete book series of The Witcher. Such an amazing addition to my book collection. And they all look so elegant.
Tumblr media
The colors are so vibrant, but though they are beautiful, I feel like they just gave up on some details by book 3 Blood of Elves. There's no more illustrations from there and if you notice the photos of the pages from each book, you can see that they also gave up on the coloured titles at the top of every 2nd page. It's not a dramatic flaw, but it's definitely something I noticed and thought it was a bit unfortunate, seeing as every single detail made them look beautiful.
Another thing I've noticed, is the translation. It was originally written in Pollish, then translated in English and many other languages I assume. I know there's French versions as well. I've looked it up because I thought maybe, hopefully, I wasn't the only one, but it's a common occurence for everyone apparantly. Nonethe less, I think I'll enjoy reading them anyways.
I even went on and got myself some bookends. I wanted something that could somewhat relate to the books. Something elegant. I wanted something fantasy related, but I could find anything that didn't cost me an arm and a leg lol.
Tumblr media
Aren't they gorgeous? 😍 Goes so well with them in my opinion. I remove the sleeves because I usually always do, since they tend to tear easily and I don't like that. But don't worry, I kept them aside because the cover arts are too beautiful to throw away. I was thinking maybe I could frame them, but we'll see.
Tumblr media
Anyways, hope you enjoyed this 3 part review. Sorry I don't describe much, I'm not very good with words and descriptions. But the pictures are there so you'll be able to see for yourself. I'll also put the links to where to purchase them on the 💜 My Stuff 💜 page, so you'll be able to own them yourselves. They are truly perfect for book collectors.

The Traitor Review - The Suffering of Scribes
The Traitor Review - The Suffering of Scribes
Tumblr media
The Traitor, the last installment of Anthony Ryan’s The Covenant of Steel, staked me through the heart. The ending of the previous book, The Martyr, left little doubt that the events of Alwyn Scribe’s life would be entering the heartbreak section of the trilogy when it ended with not only Alwyn sleeping with Evadine covered …

The Tyranny of Faith by Richard Swan
New Review: The Tyranny of Faith by Richard Swan #fantasy #review @OrbitBooks
Please note The Tyranny of Faith is the second book in The Empire of the Wolf trilogy. If you haven’t read The Justice of Kings then what follows will likely contain minor spoilers. Consider yourselves duly warned! A Justice’s work is never done. The Battle of Galen’s Vale is over, but the war for the Empire’s future has just begun. Concerned by rumors that the Magistratum’s authority is waning,…

The Phoenix King by Aparna Verma
The Phoenix King by Aparna Verma is the perfect slice of sci-fi/ fantasy for anyone longing to sink their teeth into a world filled with political intrigue and magical-religious quandaries. Here, the right to rule comes from the Phoenix who gifts her rulers with the ability to handle flames, but the burden of flames comes with a price. Elena Aadya Ravence is a princess coming into her power as the next ruler on the eve of her twenty-fifth birthday. With rebels threatening the peace in the streets and armies encroaching on their borders, Elena is determined to do anything she can to secure the throne, from an engagement to the commander of a small private army to backdoor political maneuvering to attempting to control the flames that define her family’s right to rule. Her father, Leo Malhari Ravence is preparing his kingdom for his daughter’s rule and he is willing to do anything to control his kingdom and ensure her safety. Finally, Yassen Knight is an ex-assassin who joins the princess’s guard and gives up his old organizations secrets in exchange for a pardon that could give him the free life he longs for. It will be up to the princess, king, and assassin to ensure peace in freedom in the kingdom if they don’t succumb to the very things they are desperately trying to control.
I am going to be honest when I say this is an excellent book with a complex magic system and a well-thought-out religious/ governmental system. The politics behind the political unrest is clear and each character has a clear point of view that fleshes out the world. All that being said, my personal tastes tend to lean a bit funnier and romantic. I don’t need every other line to be a joke, but I tend to enjoy having at least one character that breaks some of the dramatic tension. I also went into the book believing that the romance subplot was going to be a bit bigger than it was. This book had a whisper of a romantic subplot at the end with some mild yearning sprinkled in. Given the ending, I imagine Book Two will cover the impact of the romantic subplot introduced in Book One. That is all to say this is not a particularly funny or romantic book and that is completely fine. Sci-fi fantasy books with heavy political intrigue and complex magic systems are in demand and I think a slow-paced book like this one is perfect for those readers.
Thank you Orbit Books for providing me with an arc for an honest review in anticipation of the release of The Phoenix King by Aparna Verma set to come out August 31, 2021.
