(0) - Prologue
Where Otto describes the start.
My brother has always been weird.
Look, I love him so much. He's my little brother! There's nothing that could put me off.
But really, he's weird. Uncomfortably so.
I’m not saying he's a psychopath, or anything - he just… has odd interests?
I guess that's one way to put it.
This isn't my story, but I feel like I need to explain, so let me give some background.
I’m Otto, and my little brother is Kaede. He's two, nearly three years younger than me. We were never that close as kids - I’ve always been a bit more open to talking to people, and he was always shy, hiding behind our mom’s legs.
Kaede, as soon as he learned to, was reading. And he was reading big things; he wasn't interested in the kindergarten picture books, he wanted to read the fantasy stories up in fifth grade. And our parents loved it. They praised him for reading and being so intelligent. But I guess… Kaede only saw it as motivation to dive deeper.
When I got into middle school, we got devices. Nothing too fancy, but we were able to contact our parents and each other, and use the internet and a few games. I never really did anything besides message our parents, but Kaede… he got interested in the internet.
Yeah, yeah, don't let kids get unrestricted access to technology and all that. He was, like - what, nine? I was eleven, twelve? And of course he didn't tell our parents, because he always kept to himself. I - I’m getting off topic. Point is, he got into a community.
Conspiracy.
I didn’t really think much about it, I just assumed he was reading about it and moved on. But turns out getting into that as his form of entertainment got him a bit obsessed.
So, years later, past middle school, I was in senior year of high school with him in sophomore. Was trying to find a college to go to and all, typical senior year stuff. I found this place called Ferren University, a little place tucked out of the way - honestly, was kind of shocking with how many options there were there. Turns out Kaede happened upon a conspiracy theory about the school, some… weird thing, I don't really know what's going on there.
Anyway, I’m now a junior at Ferren, double majoring in engineering and political science. I have a great social life, great bunch of friends, great connections with professors. And now Kaede, my little brother that's been absolutely obsessed with the apparent “story” of Ferren, is starting his freshman year here.
I just know something is going to go wrong.

It was 20 years ago (ish) :: Empire magazine publishes The Lord of the Rings: A Celebration, a special booklet enclosed with the magazine's January 2004 issue, which was released in December 2003. The booklet carried interviews with the principal cast of the LOTR trilogy as well as a significant amount of the creatives involved. The photography was taken in Watford, New York, Wellington, London, Sydney, Los Angeles, Surrey, Melbourne, and Vancouver between February and October 2003. Shown here:
Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Elijah Wood (Frodo), Billy Boyd (Pippin); John Rhys-Davies (Gimli/Treebeard), Dominic Monaghan (Merry), Sean Bean (Boromir); Orlando Bloom (Legolas), Sean Astin (Sam), Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn); Miranda Otto (Eowyn), Andy Serkis (Gollum/Smeagol), Liv Tyler (Arwen); Bernard Hill (Theoden), Christopher Lee (Saruman), Karl Urban (Eomer); Hugo Weaving (Elrond), David Wenham (Faramir), and Cate Blanchett (Galadriel).
[Note: Dominic Monaghan's photo here is an outtake; the actual shot in the booklet can be seen here. These photoshoots provided several excellent outtakes that I'd be happy to share if there is interest.]
