billy doesn’t even notice anything different when the voices first start. so used to listening to a constant stream of hate and resentment in his head. mean, spiteful words that used to sound like his father, but have morphed into his own voice as the years have gone by. his very own fucked up defence in his fight for survival. always the first person to put himself down. listing all the vile names he’ll end up being called anyway. reminding himself of his place in the world. of what he wants, but can never have.

when another voice is added to the mix, unfamiliar but wrapped around the same vicious words, it takes a while to register that billy’s not alone up there. takes a while to notice the intruder, poking around the cobwebbed corners of his mind, digging for gold. coming up with ten blood-tinted memories for each sun-bleached one. feeding off them. slowly taking over. 

max looks at him, and monster, echoes around his head, you’re the scary thing in her house. harrington locks eyes with him over sundae-stained tables, and the voice soars. shrills out a laugh that splits billy’s head in two, awful in its truth. oh, it says, this is golden. you think he’ll ever want you?

late at night, his father’s breathing taking up all the air in the room, the house, the entire world, billy lifts his mattress to take out the pouch hidden underneath. a couple more weeks, a few more swimming lessons. just a handful of dollars more and he’s out of this place. his hands are shaking. he’s not alone. at that moment, he knows. he’s never getting out.

Well over a year ago I started a woodcut printing project with Matsu, Masa and Yaichi and it never really went anywhere. The fact that it maybe way too detailed wasn't even the main issue - I've completed overly detailed woodcut prints before - there was just something off about the drawing itself to begin with.

But a week ago I started my new job at the local Graphic Studio and I have to learn new techniques (I know, isn't it awful) because I'm gonna have to be able to explain it to people coming in to learn themselves. And one of those techniques is screen printing!

I've only observed and assisted so far (and learned so much already) but the plan for tomorrow is for me to do it myself, start to finish!

So I re-drew the aforementioned drawing and now I like it much, much better. I made two versions - The first is just line art, and the second is shaded with tiny dots and stripes - because I want to be able to go as detailed as possible.

(For the record: I am actually so psyched that I have to learn new techniques for this job!! Honestly cannot believe my luck.. About two years ago I was shown how to make a lithographic print by my now-colleague, but I'm gonna have to take a refresher course on that one. Those are the main two for now, but I'm sure I'll learn much more along the way.)

What would you do if someone didn't pay for a commission? Has it happened before?

Thankfully, everyone I've ever done a comm for has been an absolute delight from start to finish so I've only ever had good experiences! But to answer the first part, if someone didn't pay for a commission then I'd be pretty surprised given that they're "pay what you want". I always send the commission in full before I ask for any payment so if I got to that point and someone just...didn't pay I'd be like "okay then" and a few things would happen:

They lose the option to have the written work remain private/unpublished (which is something I let all my commissoners decide when they're happy with the final draft).

I would let them know that I was disappointed in their choice since I'm actually very reasonable and I've had a few occasions where I've had to be very flexible with people. I'm not a cunt and it's pay what ye want so if there's an issue then lemme know.

Since I know many people who take commissions and are dependent on that income, I would then put out a warning for them to avoid the person because if they've stiffed me when I'm so flexible and forgiving, then they're likely to fuck over someone else in greater need.
