I forgot how fucking intense the third act of Prince's Gambit is. Not just the sex scene. But also that. I'm talking about the Aimeric reveal, the second one where Damen can recognize that Laurent is lashing out because he's hurting, and the scene after Nicaise where Laurent is frantically trying to wound Damen but can't, because Damen sees it coming and refuses to rise to his taunts. And just-- "You thought you could help him," but he didn't, he got him killed, and he was just a boy who was being abused. Aimeric was just a boy who was being abused. Laurent was just a boy who was being abused. And he's dizzy and scared and "I can't think" and for the first time ever, someone is there to steady him. I mean. Gosh.

Fantasy Book Review: The Captive Trilogy by C.S. Pacat
JJ’s rating: 4.5/5
How feral did it make me: 5/5
My book reviews
Ahh these books. What can I possibly say about these books that hasn’t been said before? I first read these books not long after the third book, Kings Rising, was published, back in 2016. If I remember correctly, on that first read, I was sort of like, eh, these are good. I like these. And then a bit later, maybe like a year later (?) I went back and reread them and was like “oh my god?? oh my god?? OH MY GOD??!” And now they have become one of my more frequent rereads (like almost once a year), and they are easily the fandom that I most frequently return to in between hyper fixations. I only have these books on Kindle, and they are pretty thoroughly annotated at this point. Book two, Prince’s Gambit, is genuinely one of my favorite books of all time.
Okay, if you haven’t read these books or heard of them, here’s the summary: Damianos of Akielos, the crown prince of this world’s version of ancient Greece, is captured by his half-brother in a coup and sent to his country’s greatest enemy, Vere, which is this world’s version of, like, a more debauched version of medieval France. Damen is given as a sex slave to the frigid Crown Prince Laurent. The problem? Damen killed Laurent’s older brother, Prince Auguste, five years ago, and if Laurent finds out Damen's true identity, he’ll definitely have him killed. So Damen has to make his way through the complexities of the Veretian court, ruled by Laurent’s uncle, the Regent, while trying to escape before his identity is revealed.
There are a LOT OF content warnings for these books, but some of them are spoilers, so if you want them, DM me and I will be happy to answer any questions about content. I will say that the first book has a fairly different tone than the later two. The first book really leans in more to the master/slave kink dynamics of the whole story and is more like ~oooh look! So sexy! So provocative!~ The second and third books are more like “here, let me stab you with these heart wrenching revelations and genuine emotions!!!!!” Like the kink dynamics are still there in the later two books, but the tone is much more serious, if that makes sense. I believe C.S. Pacat has sort of talked about how the Captive Prince series was kind of her practice trilogy before writing Dark Rise (book two out now!!), and I think that is most obvious in the first book.
The relationship between Damen and Laurent is absolutely wonderful. I consider them one of my top two or three OTPs. The hatred. The eventual respect. The yearning. The pining. The LONGING. THE TRUST. Here are some of my favorite (non spoilery) lines (all from book 2 because 2 and 3 have the best lines but the best lines in book 3 are all spoilers):
“It was like being pleased by a thorn bush, feeling fond of every prickle. Another second and he was going to say something ridiculous like that.”
“To get what you want, you have to know exactly how much you are willing to give up.”
“A kingdom, or this.” (this line lives RENT FUCKING FREE in my mind forever)
These books also have a fairly unambiguously happy ending. The author has published several short stories, which are all very enjoyable.
Due to the content of these books, they are definitely not for everyone, but for me, at least, I think they are brilliant. They are THE enemies to friends to lovers couple, in my humble opinion. Also, there is a fairly large fandom for these books, with some GREAT fan artists and fanfic authors. Truly we are all blessed.

So. I finished reading the Captive Prince trilogy in three days (just the novels, not the short stories) and I am feeling a lot of things, but mostly I'm feeling vaguely frustrated. It's hard to articulate how I feel. I enjoyed the books while I was reading them, even though some parts made me cringe. But that's not the problem.
The problem is the Lymond Chronicles by Dorothy Dunnett. I feel like at least some people who liked the Captive Prince books would love Dunnett but I've found that recommending the books rarely sticks.
If you're expecting an epic gay romance, you won't find it in Lymond. But a lot of the other elements in the Captive Prince series are there, along with great writing, a complex cast of characters, and plots and ploys abound. I don't read much historical fiction, but Dunnett was so good, it sucked me completely in, despite knowing very little of the history and setting. (Not so different from reading fantasy, really.)
Anyway! Spoiler warnings for all the Captive Prince novels and the Lymond Chronicles, though it's less explicit for the latter.
Let's get the obvious thing out of the way. My favourite book series is the Lymond Chronicles by Dorothy Dunnett, six historical fiction novels set in the 1500s, spanning from Scotland to Europe to Turkey to France, featuring a blond-haired, blue-eyed, minor Scottish nobleman known as Francis Crawford of Lymond. I'm sure other people have pointed out the similarity between the two series and the characters Laurent and Lymond and there has been analysis by people much more eloquent than me.
I started reading Captive Prince one afternoon and finished it before midnight. I went on to read Prince's Gambit simply because Laurent was acting so Lymond-like that I had to find out what he was up to. I immediately suspected he knew who Damen was from the start because that's the sort of annoying leaps of logic Lymond makes, with his cornflower blue eyes glittering with malice — that's how similar they are.
I'm not one of those people who can't enjoy a book because something like it has already been done before. I'm always looking for books that could bring me back to that same kind of excitement I found when I first read the Lymond Chronicles. One of the reasons I picked up Captive Prince was because of the comparisons made to Lymond.
It's just that I feel a bit cheated that, despite all the similarities, I don't think it would be easy to get people to read the Lymond Chronicles after getting into Captive Prince. It's too dense, too full of historical references, too many quotes in too many languages. Too clever.
Who knows whether the parallels in the two series were intentional or not. At the start of the first book, The Game of Kings, Lymond gets drunk before he goes off to rob his mother, Sybilla, and set her castle on fire. Here's part of his conversation with her. You can see why everyone around him wants to stab him. He's more loquacious than Laurent, at any rate.
Tumblr media
Yes, he even has an older brother. Lymond goes and antagonises Richard almost immediately after this. I think that was the point where I started wondering, This is the man we're supposed to get behind? Quite the antihero, Francis Crawford of Lymond.
There are other things. They don't play the same part or advance the narrative the same way in both stories, but the fact that they are there just … I'm not even sure what to say. Imitation is the best form of flattery? There are disguises with hilarious consequences, trials where every single piece of evidence is disputed, exhilarating chases over the rooftops of Paris, whips and whipping posts, royal hunts that don't end well, ridiculous acrobatics on horses, babies of indeterminate parentage, your favourite characters ending up dead, Will Scott's mix of hero worship and wanting to strangle Lymond at the same time, and Jerott (I don't even know where we should toss Jerott).
Sometimes it's just a line, and I end up raising an eyebrow at it because it sounds so Dunnett. I'm not disparaging Pacat here; as I said earlier, I'm frustrated, because I feel more people should enjoy the Lymond Chronicles and Dunnett's writing, but they're not going to, because Dunnett was too clever and made the books too dense and witty and difficult.
If you do start The Game of Kings, though, I ask you to try to get at least to page 100 or so before giving up. That was where I decided that yes, this was definitely worth the effort.
I don't suppose I'm making much sense, but apparently I feel so strongly about this that I need to make a Tumblr post in an otherwise empty account. Go me.
PS: I liked Megan Whalen Turner's Queen's Thief series as well, though the first book is, uh, somewhat disappointing? I don't know if I had too high expectations or what. I loved the later books, though. For some reason, I still haven't read the last book in the series. I suppose I should remedy that.

I'VE FINISHED LESSON 20
Spoilers under the cut! Read at your own peril. I’m not really doing any deep analysis and this is just my first take right after finishing the lesson and my general reaction.
So first off
Tumblr media
Devs...please...please let us romance Mephisto, Thirteen, and Raphael
And
I just found this very funny and cannon for Mammon now.
Tumblr media
Secondly
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aside from this very last bit from the post credits...kinda underwhelming finally.
The brothers stay, Raphael leaves without a word after they give their decision, everyone knowing full well the Celestial Realm threatened war, you're still stuck in the past and will be an exchange student at RAD with Solomon (I see you retconnning Devs! You can't fool me!!), and it ends with a 6-8 lesson ball.
Interestingly, when Diavolo bestows your new title (Devilsitter) and you're given a forehead kiss there is a white flash.
We always get fade to black whenever we're kissed. Or just the background.
White flashes are our soap opera stereotype signaling something important is about to happen or did.
And Diavolo brought up future of Devildom a few times
Overall, my rating of the story 7.5/10. We got a shit ton of lore which I love about how things came to be in the first game and even new info like Solomon and Diavolo's personal issues and their struggle with them. Like how Diavolo feels he's not ready to be the leader of the Devildom and there is a lot a pressure placed on his shoulders to be the best from his family's legacy.
But...there are times where the stakes where high and kinda dropped. Like the mid-season climax where Lucifer and the brothers confront Diavolo, Diavolo's king's gambit whatever, you in a coma, war with the Celestial realm looming, you possibly being banished.
Now the first part was handled well, I think.
Diavolo'a trial was important, I just wish it was more challenging for him and not just him addressing his Daddy issues and insecurity. But we did get to make out with him, so...horny points, but also it was nice seeing Diavolo being open with MC. Opena and honest. Which is something he’s tried to do in OB (I’m only up to lesson 49 I don’t know how everything or what else happens from then on).
Coma, boring. The threat of banishment is a constant in the background of the first half. And the whole threat of war...completely dropped.
I mean we had a possible interaction also with Michael and for sure Nightbringer. Solomon knows who Nightbringer is (I believe this is reviled in one of the hard lessons and I’m only up to 11 on) and is being very guarded over his own history, yet desperately wants you to ally with him. Well sorry my dude, the brothers are offering me free love and cock while you
Tumblr media
Sorry, the whole professor teacher/student role playing shtick ain't my kink
So
Off with you, creepy old man (no offense to those who like him, you do you, more power to you).
I want Lucifer, Satan, and Diavolo to tell me everything will be safe and alright while railing me. And they offer their love unconditionally (I’m not here to debate Diavolo’s questionable actions let me love this himbo prince in peace!).
So that’s my initial reaction to it all. I loved all the lore we got, the story could have been handled better, I think. However, it is the first season and the curse of the first season is that it has to establish foundations for the next seasons to do well so it may not exactly be the most exciting. I’m happy with what we got and it was fun to play. I just hope we don’t have to wait long for season 2.

So :eyes: is there any fic/masterpost for the BOE Harrow AU?
I kinda made one a while back but I've lost it and it also wasn't the greatest so fuck it just gonna make a new summary of the idea because heck it. Massive spoilers for if I ever end up writing this out as a fic. (For those not in the know this is basically a summary of the big ol idea in my head for a BoE Harrow AU I came up with with a friend and it has possessed me body and soul ever since) SPOILERS FROM THIS POINT ON - G1deon manages to catch Wake just a little earlier than he does in the regular timeline. He ends up discovering and taking baby Gideon before kicking Wake out the airlock to her death. So Gideon is Kiriona from the get go and raised by John from her baby years. Insufferable Crown Prince to the max. In addition, in this timeline Kiriona is a necromancer as in the Nova AU. - The Rev. Parents still try their 200 soul murder sex gambit. However in this timeline, as with the Nova AU, Harrow has absolutely ZERO ability as a necromancer. When she's about ten all hope is given up that she is just a 'late bloomer'. - The Rev. Parents summon the surviving Ninth and tell them all what they did. That they went all in on their gamble, that they killed the ninth, and that their (in their eyes) failure of a daughter wasn't even a success for all that sacrifice. The Ninth basically erupts into chaos after that with most of them killing each other before the Rev. Parents and their 'side' win. They decide the ninth ends here. The survivors all hang themselves, including child Harrow. - As the ninth chokes its last, one by one, all their constructs start falling apart. One, though - the one made from Wake's bones - is freed enough for her revenant to take over. She walks through the halls of the dying until she finds a choking Harrow near death. On the brink of passing out and utterly delirious, Wake saves Harrow and then slips into the back of her mind as Alecto did in the normal timeline. Biding her time there. - During the chaos of the ninth tearing itself to pieces a shuttle attempting to flee crashed into the prison higher up the shaft. Caused enough damage to give the prisoners there a chance to stage a breakout. - Most of the prisoners just flee, but a small amount (A BoE cell, specifically Ctesiphon Wing) realizes that with everyone on the planet dead and the ninth already being such a backwater that they can just take over and use the place as a secret base within the Dominicus system. Just send out reports now and then to convince the rest of the Empire that it is business as usual. - We Suffer finds Harrow, near death, having been saved from hanging. After having Harrow held in containment for a long while she is eventually released and adopted in all but name by We Suffer. - Harrow grows up under the BoE on the ninth just festering in rage and spite and hatred. For her parents, for the ninth, for the empire, for the emperor undying. Wake squatting in the back of her skull only makes matters worse. She ends up taking the BoE name of Cry Havoc and Let Slip the Dogs of War One True Pop to Lead you in the Summer to Join the Black Parade. Or just Havoc. - Because Harrow has massive sensory issues with having her face bare and nothing will convince me otherwise, but she also doesnt want to paint her face ninth style anymore, she digs through BoE's scattered archives of old earth and finds out about 'the ancient warrior poets - the Juggalos' and takes up their paint for herself. (More in a reblog, ran outta space... damn you tumblr)

We need to talk about X-Men '97!
October 31st, 1992, saw the release of the iconic X-Men animated series. It quickly gained praise and viewership from its audience. For years, it has been regarded as one of the most high-quality animated adaptations.
This year, the X-Men Animated Series finally gains a sequel; X-Men '97. The next chapter in Marvel's Uncanny Mutants is only halfway through its season. Its journey is only just beginning, and it has already gained praise from critics.
Welcome to the House of Milesverse. Today, we will be talking about X-Men '97, and its growing impact. I hope you enjoy the read and remember to (SNIKT) leave a comment or suggestion, bub.
WARNING. THERE WILL BE SPOILERS.
'97's story:
Tumblr media
Unsurprising to anyone, '97 picks up a year after the events of the last episode. With Charles Xavier gone, Cyclops has taken full reins over the team. The X-Men are facing off against new and dangerous challenges.
'97 has a timeless vibe to its story, almost as if you never left. These are still the same characters as they were before. The X-Men's lore and story within the animated continuity have not changed.
Much like its predecessor, '97 also provides some interesting adaptations. For an example, look no further than Madelyne Pryor, the clone of Jean Grey. In just one episode, the series condensed the events of her story.
Another good example is their destruction of Genosha. Watching it play out on the screen was such a shocker. Its destruction was carried out by Cassandra Nova in the comics. Interestingly enough, she's completely absent from the series, with this being a conspiracy done by Bolivar Trask.
The X-Men have been missed.
Tumblr media
Dear X-Men, we have missed you.
X-Men's animated series is in line with other serious, action-heavy stories from that time. Their story focuses on the message of hate, and the real-world issues it can relate to. The persecution that mutants feel has often been used to represent various minority groups across history.
In addition, the original series combined that with beautifully made animation. The action scenes have been well-remembered by fans for years. The animated series has become such a beloved part of the animated media circle within comic books. For anyone who's a fan of our merry mutants, they definitely have spent some time with this show.
97 has proven to be a perfect follow-up by many fans. In just two episodes, 97 was able to impress the audience. It's following in the footsteps of its predecessor. X-Men 97's acclaim and interest can only rise, especially thanks to it's renewal.
What's so different?
Tumblr media
These may be the same mutants you have met, but their voices are not. Some of the actors, such as Norm Spencer (the original voice for Cyclops) unfortunately passed away over the years. Others have been recast to play different characters.
Here are what I feel are the most notable additions:
Cyclops is now voiced by Ray Chase, well known for being the voice of numerous characters such as Noctis Lucis Caelum (FF15), Bruno Bucciarati (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure), Tengen Uzui (Demon Slayer), Roy (Fire Emblem), and the Master of Masters (Kingdom Hearts)
Jean Grey (and Madelyne Pryor) is now voiced by Jennifer Hale, well known for being the voice of Commander Shepherd (Mass Effect), Princess Morbucks (Powerpuff Girls), and one of the Hex Girls, Thorn (Scooby-Doo). It's also worth noting that Jennifer Hale reprises the role, as she initially had it during Wolverine and the X-Men.
Gambit is an interesting case, as his prior voice actor, Chris Potter, is now playing Cable. He's instead voiced by A.J. LoCascio, who does voice work for both Prince Lotor (Voltron: Legendary Defender) and Marty McFly (Back To The Future: The Game).
Speaking of? Cable is voiced by Chris Potter now, whose done work as Peter Caine (Kung-Fu: The Legend Continues), and Evan Owen (The Young and The Restless).
Cable's old voice actor was Lawrence Bayne, but he was replaced by Chris Potter. Ironically enough, Lawrence Bayne plays a new character who debuts in the same episode as Cable's birth, The X-Cutioner. Lawrence Bayne is known as the voice of Gill (Street Fighter III: Third Strike) and Raven (Gargoyles).
Lastly? Jubilee's old voice actress, Alyson Court, wanted someone of Asian descent to portray her. That is where Holly Chou comes in, acting as the new voice of Jubilee. She did the voice work for Akame (Like A Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name). It is also worth noting that Alyson Court acted as the voice of an older Jubilee in an episode, named Abscissa.
As you can see, a lot has changed with the voice cast of the X-Men series. Some characters who were voiced by older actors had been replaced. Others, like Cal Dodd (The voice of Wolverine) and Alison-Sealy Smith (The voice of Storm) still reprise their iconic roles.
While much has changed? At the end of the day, these new actors all still portray the spirit of the character. Ray Chase for example makes for a standout, with how closely he sounds to Norm Spencer's Cyclops.
What to look forward to & Conclusion
Tumblr media
X-Men '97 is heating up, and we are already almost at the end. If you haven't checked it out yet, then I recommend it. The series is short, but its episodes all have a distinct impact and role. They not only move the plot forward but also help the characters to grow.
My hope is that Superhero Animation swings back into full gear. I remember as a kid it felt like it was practically already there. From the 90s to the 2000s, you could not miss it. The DC Animated Universe, for example, stands out as one of the best superhero animation projects. An entire generation grew up on those stories, and those adventures.
X-Men shows that its importance and value to people matters. Much like the DCAU, it raised so many children and was their first introduction to the X-Men. It stands out as one of the most iconic superhero action cartoons ever, and frankly? It's earned its title.
I think the future of superhero animation is steadily climbing back up. We have had great animated series, such as Invincible, Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur, My Adventures with Superman, and now? X-Men '97.
This has been a wonderful episode of House of MilesVerse. I hope you join us for a deep dive into our favorite robots in disguise. I'll be doing a full review of Transformers: Earthspark.
And? If you didn't know it, then now you know. We'll chronicle some adventures of Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur.
