So I made this Au like 6 months ago and had no one to speak about it to. If you remember games of the old horror genre then you might have heard about Haunting Ground and Rule of Rose. Two games of the early 2000s that were female protag centered. Well I made and Au kinda centering both games with Twst ~~mainly Haunting Ground~~ called Twisted Grounds/ Rule of Wonderland.

It’s not gonna fully follow the events of those games, but more on their mechanics. Like the panic system of Haunting Grounds, and the companion system of both games using Grim.

It’s more like a what if Twisted Wonderland was like those old early ps2 games. Without further ado here’s the info of each dorm summarized basically

byler au where after a series of tragic events, and with the help of a kid he befriended over secret letters, mike is able to escape from a house of horrors he'd been kept in for a while. lonely and with nowhere to go, he then is admitted into an orphanage where he meets will, a kind and quiet child who helps him adapt to life in his new home.

things are not easy, however, for the orphanage operates under the very strict rule of the rose king, a mysterious figure who gives little tasks to the rest of the children every month and, should they fail to fulfil their duties, gives out ruthless punishments to those who fail to please him.

so, starting out at the bottom of the hierarchy, and determined to climb the ranks to make his and will's situation better, mike breaks every rule possible to excel in his offerings to the rose king and eventually reaches a point where he himself could contend for the position of king !

except,,, well, as it turns out will is not only the kid who helped him escape, but he is also the rose king himself, and he's manipulated the entire situation from the beginning because he wants mike.

he wants mike all for himself and, as the king, he always gets what he wants.

i dont consider myself an Active member of the jnd fandom but its been a pretty big interest of mine since i played the first game on ps2 when i was rly little and i get back into it pretty intensely for short periods of time every now and then (throwback to when i did my rewrite/au thing and made a bunch of art over like a week and then totally dropped out of it again LOL)

Usurper of the Wilds and the Lion Den

Intro | Rose Maze | Witch’s Lake-house | Desert Manor | Poison Palace | Death’s Mansion | Dragon’s Castle

This chapter isn’t as similar to its incarnation of the original version. Instead of Leon’a being upset about a sports game, he’s upset about serving this higher up that had informed them that they need Yuu, whether they were dead or alive, the bbeg (Crowley) didn’t care.

After defeating (Killing or Saving) Riddle, and either steal or obtain his charm, Yuu runs to this slight hole in the wall of this fortress looking castle that leads underground to this den-like cave. Yuu runs into thinking they were safe from beastman scouts that had spotted them earlier. That’s when they run into Jack, the newest edition to the pride of Beastman. He noticed them immediately and began to chase them. Yuu had to use a different method to escape from Jack and other future “stalkers”. After all, Beastman have far more superior senses than humans. An instant game over if Jack caught them.

Anyway, They escape and make it to the surface of the “den”. This is were a cutscene will play out to reveal Leona and Ruggie speaking about some sort of plan to steal the “prisoner” from the Rose Maze before the sun rose up again, not realizing that Yuu had already escaped and freed the Heartslaybul gang from their torment.

It follows with Jack rushing in and confusing Leona and Ruggie, as he explains that Yuu, and a strange cat monster has arrived in the den. Ruggie is shocked and relieved that they don’t have to bother with the Rose Maze, while Leona is amused that Yuu manage to survive this long into the Lion’s Den so he retires to his room and Task Ruggie and Jack as well as the entirety of the Den to search and bring Yuu to him…alive.

Yuu’s like “fuck this” and tries to escape the Lion’s Den, but obviously that doesn’t work as they run into Ruggie, who immediately tries to capture them, and initiates a mini boss fight. Unlike Rose Maze which was more stealth base than Battle or puzzle base, Lion’s Den is more battle base, than puzzle or stealth.

Yuu wins and has the options to either kill or spare, each has a consequence that leads towards the end, anyway, Yuu actually confronts Leona in his study, while being chase, this starts a cutscene of Yuu threatening to kill Leona which makes him laugh, and that he’d rather team up and fight against the BBEG but he needs their power Yuu has the power of the great seven, Yuu refuses as they don’t know about the power, which causes a fight. Yuu obviously wins this fight and the option comes up again (Kill or Spare). Whatever option Yuu chooses doesn’t effect how they obtain Leona’s charm (His Choker)

Unrelated to Eggman but a more general Unleashed opinion: the SD version is better than the HD version due to having better level design and not blocking off progress behind random collectibles

I understand the appeal because I really like the Wii/PS2 version too, it was my first. The level design is fun. I also like to play it when I want to be more casual and quick with it and don't wanna go looking for medals. My favorite things is that I really like the different Eggmanland stages day and night just as much as the other version, I adore Eggmanland so I really appreciate even more of it. I also like how the Egg Devil Ray and Egg Lancer actually have Eggman piloting them unlike the 360/PS3 version, my man is getting around and is even more hands on there- I just love seeing more of him lol

But I definitely feel the 360/PS3 version is superior and definitive for being the complete version. The hub worlds are amazingly beautiful and immersive, the character interactions are more in depth and the missions from them are super fun to me. Love the level design in it just as much as the other version and I don't mind the medals as long as I don't miss too many while playing and have to backtrack for too long because I like how it offers replayability and challenge. Also it has Empire City with a hub world and day and night stages I adooore and have a blast with (so much it's Casino AU Eggman's birthplace lol) so it's sad it's not in the Wii/PS2 version

So I gotta say I prefer the 360/PS3 version but I love the Wii/PS2 one too. But I don't feel that people have truly experienced all the best the game has to offer until they've played the former. I think both are worth a play though, the latter certainly has its qualities.

There's a reason I have every version (minus the Java if you wanna count it lol) 💜

(you can tell the PS2 version was my first as it's the most busted up but by now the 360 version is my most played for being my ultimate fav version)

I’m gonna age myself significantly by saying I saw a VHS ad on one of my disney movies (honestly don’t remember which one) and was super enthralled because Jack Skelington was in it (the nightmare before christmas is like. one of my all time favorite movies and as a kid i would watch it over and over and over again) but also was really interested in the vibe of it. I’m pretty sure it’s this ad.

Anyway, i didn’t know what a video game was, or a ps2, but my cousins got it not that much later and watching them play piqued my interest even more. Fast forward to middle school and I was finally able to play the games on my own as well as follow along with new releases. The first kh game I was there for was days so it has a special place in my heart. I’ve been getting each game ever since!

Ooh, my first ask 🤗 and what a great question to start with!

It's honestly such a weird story lmao but the short version is that I didn't find SquidBob. SquidBob found me. 🧽🐙

As for the long version, answering/rambling below the cut!

I think it happened just under a year ago or so? It was definitely sometime in late 2022/early 2023. Before then, I wasn't even remotely in the fandom and was more or less part of the group who had seen SBSP but wasn't involved beyond that.

When we were younger, my sister and I played Battle for Bikini Bottom on the PS2. So when the "Rehydrated" version came out, she hit me up and was like "omg they made a remake! we have to play it!" and I was all "hell yeah! nostalgia ftw!" (def worth it - it's a good time and everyone looks so damn adorable 🥹).

If you've played that game and you're in the fandom, you're probably pretty familiar with this moment (clip actually starts at :12). 😉😂 HOWEVER, this wasn't even the moment that initially caught my attention. In fact, it was actually THIS one between Robot Plankton and Robot Spongebob (who is terrifying btw). My sister and I got to this part in the game and were just...👀👀. Like, why was Robot Plankton (who is essentially a clone of real Plankton) thinking of Robot Spongebob like that? Kinda gay if you ask me. Long story short, I shipped PlankBob (ironically) for a hot minute lmao.

I started looking online to see if anyone else was crack-shipping it up like I was and I think that's when I came across SquidBob in earnest. I had remembered seeing some rather interesting moments between them in the past, but strangely never thought anything of it until I started looking below the surface. A few YouTube clips later, my memory was beginning to refresh - and those clips weren't even close to exhaustive! I just couldn't believe how unsubtle these two were! Like, HOW COULD I BE SO BLIND!?

For shits and giggles, I then decided to check AO3 to see if there were any fics about them. One of the fics I came across was none other than NBYF - the very fic that inspired my first work in this fandom! After reading it like four times, I was HOOKED. I needed more. So, I ended up on Tumblr and have been here ever since. 🥰

For added backstory, I've been in and out of fandoms over the years, but never felt the need to be active in any of them. Whether it was fandom discourse, fleeting interest, etc., I didn't want to get involved in any of that and, oftentimes, the canon just didn't inspire me to create my own works.

Needless to say, I'm so thankful to have found this small corner of the internet. Everyone has been so cool thus far and it's been really fun to write fics for SquidBob. I've always been a bit of a sucker for the grump x sunshine ship dynamic, so this pair is just perfection. 🌧️❤️☀️✨ One of these days I'll do an entire post about why I ship them. Someday lol. And given how episodic the SBSP show is, that actually helps a ton for writing - it's great to be able to stay true to the canon while not committing to any solid timelines or anything like that. I mean, even the actual show has continuity issues, so no one can fault me if I decide to switch things up a bit. 😜 I tend to prefer canon divergence vs. AUs when it comes to fanfiction as well because I really enjoy the challenge of working with an existing world/characters and creating a unique story for it all.

So, that's my fandom origin story. Not the most cut-and-dry (and probably not what you were asking) lmao but that's essentially where it all started! I'd be interested in hearing when/how you got into SquidBob hell, if you haven't already posted about it. 😊

It was probably the best school assignment i ever got in my life, and kicked off my fan fic writing career. 🍄 ⇢ share a head canon for one of your favourite ships or pairings This one is hard cause I've got lots of character headcanons for most fandoms I'm in but.... uhhhhh. Pairing headcanons are a lot harder since a) half of the stuff I ship is not canon and b) I'm a sucker for AUs and love to tilt canon on its side to see what happens so that inherently already changed the lens to mostly being headcanon.
