Do you guys think a mending/darning service would be popular. I mainly just do visible mending, but I think with enough practice I'd be able to get good at invisible mending and even altering clothes.
Idk if I can make a business out of that though. I just don't think I can work with (a lot of ) people and I'm not much good at other stuff.
But I can fix stuff and I could advertise it online.
So the Magical Flying Husband and I get orders occasionally from Mistfits Market, and we regularly get Hello Fresh (do you know how much I miss grocery shopping and planning for my meals for the week? A lot. A lot. but I'm thankful for the vast privilege that keeps me able to not go into grocery stores full of shambling maskless eugenicists).
These boxes come either with a sort of honeycomb paper layer as insulation, or with stuff that is basically quilt batting. And being basically a quilter, I looked at that stuff and said "Ah. We'll be keeping this. I must have a use for it."
And I did, eventually! I stuffed like a dozen square pillow covers with it, so that I can have nice spaces to curl up in like a cat!
But for the last...year and a half? I've just been rolling them up tight and stuffing them into boxes and under the basement stairs and
I'm curious what ideas you have for mending or reusing old tights? I have problems with the inner thigh seams and of course the (nearly) inevitable ladders, so any advice is appreciated!
Mending and reusing old tights
I've got a post on mending and reusing tights that might be of use to you. Pinterest also has plenty of ideas on how to mend and reuse tights.
Unfortunately most tights aren't made to last these days thanks to planned obsolescence. If you frequently wear pantyhose and the like, keep an eye out for unopened packages at thrift shops. Vintage tights tend to be stronger than modern tights.
How can I be better at giving back to Mother Earth and nature?
Something that I've realized with witchcraft is that we are always giving and taking from the environment around us. It's something I love about the witch community. Putting energy into what you need and thanking the earth for providing is respectful and beneficial. I also like how the community is thinking of ways to make our own things and reduce or recycle materials that may be needed in the future. The community also opts to support small buisnesses which I think is cool since many individuals need the support rather than big stores.
But with all if this in mind it has has lead me to wanting to shop for products that are made from sustainable and ethically produced sources. However, I'm starting to realize that it's hard to live a cheap sustainable life. Sustainability means that costs are going to be higher, however the quality will be better.
For example, fast fashion is a huge problem from the world and sustainability. There are so many companies that sell clothes in masses and once they are "out of style" the left over clothes is wasted. Furthermore fast fashion is usually made from cheap materials which don't last long which then leads to a cycle of buying more fast fashion. Sustainable fashion are made of more quality materials and usually last longer when taken car of properly. However, the problem with sustainable fashion is how it usually costs up to $60 or more which not everyone can afford.
Another example would be kitchen products. There are plenty of items in the kitchen that are plastic that can be replaced with more suitable materials or can be reused multiple times. For example, reusable cotton coffee filters, reusable silicon sandwich bags, glass tupperware, induction cook top, food huggers (silicon food covers), etc. All of these items are super nice, but I also understand the convenience of being able to dispose of everything and not needing to wash the reusable items. Also I understand that the initial price will be pricey, however in the long run it will benefit you by not producing waste.
I guess what I'm getting at is, we should be taking care if the world and making sure we as individuals are doing our part to keep the Earth clean and happy so are they cheaper ways to be sustainable?
Now I understand not everyone can afford the expensive sustainable products. And I want to state what I'm in no way telling people what they should do or blaming people who buy the products. I know there are so many problems and things that could be talked about for sustainability. I just want to spread awareness of it since not everyone is aware of it or they don't realize that majority of things that they buy are unsustainable products.
I also want to hear other peoples opinions about the topic. So reblog or reply with what you think.
