#49: Enkeli of Ajendra
Idea: Fast and loose inquisitor with a nasty demonic secret
Story: Dragon Tavern
Enkeli is an Inquisitor in about the loosest definition of the term; while he absolutely traverses the countryside, hunting demons and problem-causing magic wielders, and he's damn good at it, he doesn't have the same level of xenophobic zeal as the vast majority of his contemporaries. In fact, behind the scenes, he's downright progressive for a hunter, being more than happy to "co-mingle" with non-humans and willing to let witches go free if they show sufficient remorse. While most of this stems from his being a jovial, laid-back sort of guy (and also kind of a big ol' slut), this openness to compromise with foreign races and magic users serves a practical purpose: it might bring him closer to removing his curse.
See, since birth, Enkeli has been possessed by some sort of demonic entity, and while it spent most of his childhood relatively dormant, by the time he reached puberty, it started to manifest physically, starting from his lower spine and branching upwards and outwards; as of the start of the story, it's spread across most of his torso, pelvis, and arms. Occasionally, the entity causes him to lose motor function or to behave erratically, and while Enkeli is relatively able to keep himself under control, he knows that if any of the other Inquisitors caught wind of his possession, he'd be executed on the spot.
Unfortunately, the Steel Empire hasn't really had much in the way of solutions for him: common knowledge dictated that the only way to deal with a demon was to burn it, and while he'd been to a few chirurgeons to try to painfully scrape the bad bits off (and paid handsomely for their silence), it would all grow back within a day or so.
So, he hoped that by sneaking off to the world outside of the Empire, he might find an alternative solution for his predicament. And lucky him, he got picked as a Champion and could now go on a state-sanctioned trip around the world! Of course, he was going to be under the constant watchful eye of an Acolyte, and an incredibly uptight one, at that, which would make the whole "keeping the demon under wraps" thing infinitely harder for him...not that he really minded her eyes on him, hubba hubba. Lucky him, there was a plucky young engineer girl there to keep things light.
And then things go Very Bad for Enkeli.
Post time-skip, he still hasn't found any kind of cure for his condition, despite Selien, Alriem, and Rinel working to find an answer to his problem, and his body's gone from bad to Much, Much Worse. Whether it's residual shenanigans caused by T'akar Duum's presence or just the entity deciding to kick things into overdrive of its own accord, but Enkeli's body begins to root itself in place, the demonic growths on his body becoming even larger and protruding even more. So, when he realizes he's losing mobility and is basically becoming a Demon Wall, he decides to plant himself directly in front of T'akar Duum's portal so that his body can become a meat shield to keep anyone from getting in.
By the time the Seekers get to their village, he's almost completely swallowed by the Demon Wall, and I didn't figure out how he manages to get free. I'm sure he does, though, there was no way I was letting Enkeli die because he and Rinel needed to make babies.
#50 (WHOO!): Paz Amador
Idea: Plucky young engineer with a physical disability
Story: Dragon Tavern
If there's anybody who ends up in as bad of a way as Systir in this story, it's Paz. And yes, that includes Enkeli becoming a demon wall, because at least he definitely gets out of that.
In the beginning, however, Paz is just a chipper thirteen-year-old steam engineering prodigy. Her father inspired her to learn engineering by building her a lower body brace which allowed her some level of mobility; as an infant, she contracted a debilitating disease which left her with severely crippled legs, and in the hopes of getting to see his daughter run and play with other children, he built a mechanical brace for her. She was so enthralled watching her dad build it that she wanted to learn everything about how he did it, and by the time she was ten, she'd passed the entrance exams for the local steam engineers' college. She had a particular passion for vehicles, from single-rider walkers to massive zeppelins.
In fact, it was her zeppelins which caught the attention of the Eternal Child, and she was commissioned to build one for their two Champions to take with them on their journey to find the Tower. She was not, however, expected to actually join them on this mission, but that's exactly what she did as she snuck aboard her own ship after it was completed and tagged along; she saw this as the perfect opportunity to get out and see the world.
Unfortunately, the zeppelin barely makes it past the borders of the Empire before it gets attacked by a dragon and fucked to hell, but the important part is our heroes survive. And so, our plucky squad of uptight racist, demon-possessed ladies' man and quirky teen engineer goes forth.
And then the end of the first half happens.
So Systir's little fuck-up does a number on everyone, but no one more than Paz, because she ends up losing both of her legs entirely in the fight and nearly dying as a result. During the time skip, she manages to build herself a pair of fully-mechanical legs and is struck with a thought: fuck dealing with people anymore, fuck their propensity to make rash and illogical decisions, it's time to put my faith in STEEL. So, she sequesters herself from everyone else and starts building robots; when it came time to fight T'akar Duum again, she'd roll up with an entire goddamn army under her command. Whether or not she ever learns to trust people again, I never decided.
#51: Sydan IV
Idea: Friendly neighborhood nightmare who wants to kill a bunch of batpeople
Story: Fallen London
Ah, Sydan IV. What horrible, horrible things that have happened to this woman to turn her from the relatively normal-looking creature of that first picture to the unhinged eldritch gremlin of this image here.
As you do in Fallen London, Sydan woke up in New Newgate Prison with no clue who she was and no clue how she got there; all she had was a message scrawled on her arm that said "It's the Masters' faults". So, as you do, she broke out of prison, jumped on a dirigible, and made it to Fallen London, where she shacked up with bohemians, learned to become an author, flirted with devils for quite a long while until one of them finally managed to snatch her soul (after which she gained a personal vendetta against hell), and generally got up to shenanigans.
Eventually, her primary occupation became "professor," though she continued to dabble in literature (until Queen Vicky threw her out of court), fights to the permadeath, and hellacious amounts of larceny (to this day, I don't know why I picked the Light Fingers ambition instead of Heart's Desire, but whatever).
She's fought monsters in her sleep, caught herself on fire multiple times just from reading eldritch text, been buried alive (twice!) and had to crack her own skull open and beat Death in a chess game to get out. She’s stolen, she’s flirted, she’s loved, she’s killed, she’s died, and yet it still feels like she’s no closer to her ultimate goal: to figure out just what the hell the Masters are so she can murder them and return London to the surface…assuming that’s how it even works, anyway.
At this point, even if it isn’t, she doesn’t care. In fact, thanks to her frequent trips to the Mirror-Marches and the Cave of the Nadir, not to mention the long stretches of time she tends to go without sleep, she’s occasionally forgotten exactly what her ultimate goal was. All she knows is that no matter what happens, she wants the Masters dead...even if her ultimate destiny is to apparently become one.
She also eventually gets an apprentice in one Gregor Hauptmann von Reikton, a mountain of a German man who also finds himself stuck in Fallen London. The two grow quite close, culminating in a lovely dance at a ball...and then Sydan temporarily murdering the man because she knows at that point that love is 100% the most dangerous thing in the hell they call a city, so she has to put him away briefly so she can move to one of her other secret bases and leave him behind. They make up later, though.
also I based her pose and expression here on that Matt Mercer pic. You know the one.
#52: Sydan V (aka Actually Sydan IV because she was first made in Rock Band 1, but the first pic I drew of her was after Rock Band 2 and I fuckin' forgot she came before Fallen London Sydan lol)
Idea: Quiet goth guitarist who fuckin' shreds
Story: Rock Band series
As you can tell, I really like this name, and I tended to default to it for PC names before I started roleplaying characters more.
God, I miss my little Rock Band babies so much. In Rock Band 1, I made individual characters for each of the four instrument careers, thinking I'd have them all together in a single band. Unfortunately, you couldn't have them all play together if you were playing single player; all the other bandmates would be randomly selected pre-gen characters, which was endlessly disappointing. So, imagine my joy when Rock Band 2 actually let you set which characters to have in your band, and I could finally have all my little band buddies on stage, being losers and rocking the fuck out. And it was great and I loved them and I could not recreate any of them accurately in RB4 which was a huge mark against the game and look, I super get why, they didn't have Viacom money anymore and they laid off fuckin 100+ people but that didn't make it hurt any less.
So, I resurrected the name D.A.R.K. from my self-insert rock star fantasy, but with a whole new cast of characters. In the game, you could set each character's performance demeanor, and there were four styles of clothing parts to choose from: Rock, Punk, Goth, and Metal. So of course, I made Sydan's attitude goth and her clothing goth. Each character also ended up having a particular color scheme of one color, black, and white; Sydan's personal color was red. So, Sydan ended up being a bit of a combination of Mina Nevermore and Valo, albeit just slightly less of a self-insert than Mina was.
She was still more or less based on me, but the little differences of appearance added up to her becoming her own character. The key sort of gimmick to her character was that I liked the idea of a guitarist who was surprisingly subdued in her stage persona beyond her chosen goth costumery and color coordinating shtick, but whose guitar playing was virtuosic, which would contrast with the much more vivacious (though no less technically gifted) performances of the bassist, Paz. Funny enough, if I had to compare her to anyone, it'd be Hitori Goto from Bocchi the Rock! I had a similar idea that Sydan was a gifted guitarist who was very socially withdrawn, but her best friend Mina ropes her into a band with some twins, Ren and Paz, and helps her break out of her shell. And then eventually, Sydan and Mina pull a Fleetwood Mac and get together with Ren and Paz, though with a lot less "fucking each other's girl/boyfriend".
Full disclosure: though Sydan was virtuosic, I sure as fuck was not, as I could only play up to Hard.

For this batch of 100 OCs, I decided to do something a little different and zazz them up with some colored backgrounds. Let me know if you prefer the images with or without. As always, new drawings up top, original drawings down below (with a special double for Arlein since I completely redesigned her from her original iteration), and detailed character info below the cut.
#53: Mina II
Idea: Peppy punky lead singer (and eventual keyboardist come 3)
Story: Rock Band
Now, if there was any instrument I could play expert, it was vocals, lol. Except on fucking Good Vibrations because HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO HEAR WHAT PART I'M SUPPOSED TO BE SINGING ON A LIVE FUCKING RECORDING? IT'S A SIX PART GODDAMN HARMONY. And also Tanlged Up in Blue because BOB DYLAN IS NOT SINGING SPECIFIC NOTES HALF THE TIME WHY ARE THESE CHARTED LIKE THIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIS.
Anyway, Mina.
Mina's my character for vocals, and come Rock Band 3, I slotted her in for keyboards, as well. She's the upbeat and outgoing punk of the posse, and her character color was green; green hair, green microphone, green-forward outfits. Even though the characters predate the release of the anime, I like to imagine now that D.A.R.K. specifically starts because Mina saw K-ON! and said "Dude, Sydan, we could fuckin' do that. We could do it better. We just need to find, like...a drummer and a bassist." They meet Ren and Paz in their school's band, start their own...and then spend half their time dicking around, not unlike Houkago Tea Time. They do scrabble an EP together, though, and thus their legend begins.
#54 and 55: Ren and Paz II
Idea: Polar opposite identical twins who aren't actually that polar opposite
Story: Rock Band
Finally, we have Ren and Paz, the twin brother rhythm section of D.A.R.K. - Paz as bassist, Ren as drummer. The only reason they wound up being twins was that there was only one face option I really liked for men in RB1 and I really liked The Emover hairstyle, so I just kind of leaned into it.
Ren's character color was light blue, though unlike the other characters, I didn't include any black in his wardrobe because I wanted him to have a kind of ice king look. I'd initially planned on him being the Metal representative, but most of the metal items leaned more towards GWAR costumes - lots of armor and literal metal. So instead, I also put him in Goth attire. Thus, he became the graceful, mysterious, icy drummer - who was a total dork behind the scenes.
Meanwhile, Paz was the Rock style representative, and while I'd intended on giving him a yellow color scheme, it turned out that the game didn't really have a good bright yellow color. Thus, I went with pink instead, and the combination of pink scheme and flamboyant classic rock attire went quite a way towards forming my image of him as an upbeat, showy performer, all sunshine and rainbows and bouncing about on stage in contrast to Sydan's stoic technicality.
Ren and Paz also provide back-up vocals (as Sydan is far too self-conscious about her voice and will only step to the mic in those instances where a four-part harmony is absolutely necessary), and Paz has done lead precisely once: when he wrote a song for his Spanish final project (aka when they added Me Enamora to Rock Band 3).
Fun fact: their hair highlights are reversed (Ren has white hair with a blue highlight, Paz has pink hair with a white highlight)
#56: Arlein
Idea: Storm Lord in training on a bit of field work
Story: Dragon Tavern
Somewhere around 2009 or 2010, I made a second batch of nine characters for Dragon Tavern. Since I already had the idea for the five-year timeskip, I decided these guys would be bands of adventurers searching for the missing Champions; their respective kingdoms started to get suspicious after they stopped receiving updates from the parties and put out monetary rewards for anyone who could find and bring them home. An entire subculture began to form among these "Seekers" as they traded info, banded together, and raced against one another, eventually leading to the formation of the titular Dragon Tavern and its surrounding community in an area equidistant between the three kingdoms.
The first group of Seekers in this story hailed from the Mountain Kingdoms, led by the trainee Storm Lord, Arlein. Unfortunately, Arlein's one of the least developed of this second generation, probably most evidenced by her original design; it was supposed to be an armored mage look, but it came out fairly bland. Years later, when I was redrawing everyone for practice, I noticed a funny little thing about all of my previous characters: thanks to not really thinking about it as a kid, they were basically all white people, barring the slightly tan Enkeli and Systir and the vaguely southeastern Asian adjacent Alriem. Since I was more aware of actively trying to create diverse characters, and since I wasn't overly fond of Arlein's original design, I decided that was the perfect time to give her a complete overhaul. Since I didn't have any no-shit black characters in DT, Arlein would be the first.
Now, I still have to work on her backstory and details, but the general idea for her is that she's on this trip to earn a hefty tuition - so long as she does some general "field work" along the way, the Academy will give her a basic stipend, and the full reward would cover just about any proper academic work she would ever undertake - and the notoriety that bringing in Alriem, Systir, and Iros would bring.

So recently I remembered that weird af game trailer from years ago during the PS5 reveal conference, featuring anthro characters one of wich I doubly-erroneously thought was a bird-girl.
Turns out the game is called Goodbye Volcano High and it got delayed several times, but it’s actually coming out in a few months as of this post, and something I read about its premise has me OBSESSED.
So the characters are actually anthropomorphic dinosaurs, and while I don’t prefer this kind of anthro animal designs (reptiles with human hair), turns out they are like this FOR A REASON:
The meteor is coming.
The meteor that killed the dinosaurs.
Everyone in this game is going to die. And the protagonists are teenagers, who were made to believe they had a whole life ahead of them. And the adults would rather just have everyone go on with their routine like nothing’s wrong.
So the protagonists have to decide what to do with the short time they have left, confront their identities and be true to themselves. The pterodactyl protagonist Fang, for example, is non-binary and part of a rock band. Depending on the player’s decisions the rock songs they are composing and playing throughout the game will change.
The paralels with the pandemic and other recent events as experienced by today’s youth are inevitable, and likely played a big factor during its development... yet the original trailer I mentioned in the first paragraph (not the one I posted) came out in 2020. They already had this idea before the pandemic.
While doom and gloom can be found at any point in history, I wonder if at least some of the people involved in the game grew up during the 80s and very early 90s, near the end of the Cold War, back when mutual annihilation via nuclear weapons seemed inevitable, even to little kids.
It doesn’t take much digging to find examples of dinosaurs being used irl to cope with the Cold War fears of nuclear armaggedon. They could be used as metaphors, how nuclear weapons were going to “take us back to the stone age like in The Flintstones”, or comparing it with the meteor that killed the dinosaurs (The 1988 song “Walk the Dinosaur” by Was Not Was, wich many may remember from the old Super Mario Bros. movie and Ice Age 3, is actually about this; there are some clues in the lyrics but the band has outright confirmed it).
On the other hand, dinosaurs had a rise in popularity during the 80s due to new discoveries, and served as nice escapism. Why fear a nuke when you could be crying your heart out while watching The Land Before Time? The 80s was even the decade when the theory that it was a meteor that killed the dinosaur became mainstream. Associaction!
So anyway... the game is finally coming out June 15 August 29, but I want to play it NAOW!!1! Let me laugh in the face of the apocalypse with my dinofriends!
Also if you were turned off from this game due to some shitty content online, know that it was made by a vocal minority trying to sabotage it for being LGBTQ+ friendly. Just ignore them. Do not make this about them. The game will stand on its own.
