I don’t think Rainbow Friends is the most insidious of the mascot “horror” games made for kids atm. hell I’d say it’s got the best excuse as it’s on Roblox, which doesn’t always allow the most in terms of horror and it’s probably an actual honest attempt at something horror adjacent for kids rather than… whatever’s going on with Poppy Playtime and GOB. It also seems kinda hard to make a game on with such limited resources .

However it’s also very very reflective of the issues in this niche… gameplay that’s lacking, kinda cookie-cutter plotlines, and just not being very scary. That and attracting kids that are just too young- but I don’t know if the creators are getting much money or selling official merch so… uhm??

I do get that part of the mascot bit is making the characters seem believably appealing to children and there needs to be a balance of that initial cutesy ness and the eventual subversion which is hard but I feel like there’s not much of an attempt in the slightest. It feels more like using a low grade horror edge to actually sell a character brand.

I feel like the least the devs could’ve done is push the scariness a little. Doors and even Piggy (to an extent) don’t let the whole Roblox thing stop them from making something that at least attempts to be scary. At least make the characters look a little roughed up. Dull some colors, add a lil too much detail to the eyes, something. If the kids are getting horror, then it should be horror. It really could’ve had a more Goosebumps or even Vampire Weenies like edge, still zany and relatively child friendly at least on the surface, but still bringing good horror to the table.

Like I said, not the worst offender and my opinion of it is higher than the likes of other games it’s lumped in with but I just wish that… like, everything in this niche and relating to it was a little better. People shouldn’t be draping kids franchise concepts with a guise of horror to make a quick buck, and in the cases of people actually making genuine horror for younger or just more general audiences then they should make sure they don’t fall into those traps of marketability and make sure their games have a good scare factor to em

Minesweeper is a pretty cool game! I like it. I went through my entire life not knowing how to play it, and then a few months ago decided “I will learn how Minesweeper works” and now I like it well enough. But even before I liked it as a game, there was something about it that was always charming! Even as a silly baby, I felt positive energy radiating from this game with an honestly horrific premise, because this grid of squares and numbers was Smiling at me!

The Face From Minesweeper may register as an Emoji to you, but it actually predates them! This strange creature is a Smiley. More than a mere smiling face, a Smiley is like a sort of animal. Everyone loved Smiley! You can think of it on the level of other fan-favorite animal, Dog. Just like Dog, Smiley got all sorts of merchandise! Toys, decoration, even smiling French Fries! One day, however, the magic day finally came when world leaders agreed it was time to domesticate Smiley.

Though many would have loved to have a pet Smiley of their own, it was decided that they were unfit for such a lifestyle. Instead, they would become beasts of burden... they would be Used. The selective breeding began! Over time, they became smaller, cuter. They gained a wider range of readable facial expression. Most importantly, they were now hardy enough to be sent all over the world countless times per day. And that is how Emojis came to be! Linked gene shenanigans also led to some shaped like animals, plants, objects, even symbols! Don’t worry about it. But if you are interested, I think they released a documentary about this in 2017.

After this section in which I deliberately transitioned away from smileys and toward emojis, I would like to immediately return to smileys if that’s okay. Thank you. The face from Minesweeper is always watching... but not in a scary way! In a nice way. The face is your buddy. If it ever feels too hard, you can click the face, and its square will be pressed in, and the puzzle will be reset! No shame in that.

I wonder, where does the face end, and its platform begin? Is the face even the extent of the entity? Maybe the entire Minesweeper board is just a guy, and that’s where its face is! Minesweeper is a whole character!

In that case, then, it is even funnier that the face goes :O whenever you click a space. It COULD be that it is in suspense, since any wrong move can end in disaster, but maybe it’s just because you are poking its body! And that’s a little Weird. Evidence: it does this even if you click a cleared, safe square! It is reacting to touch, not anticipation! There we have it, Minesweeper is a creature. Also, I like to use the ease of activating this face like a little digital puppet! It is fun.

Like any creature, sadly, it can Die. However, it is at least functionally immortal and only ever in danger of explosions! Unfortunately, it contains land mines. I am becoming slightly convinced that Minesweeper (game) is, in fact, a bizarre sort of medical procedure where you help to isolate the explosives embedded in this grid-based life-form’s body. The only way to save it, sadly. And sadly, if you are not a professional, Minesweeper and its precious Face will die... but it’s okay. We have more! Just press the face and reset the game and don’t tell anyone!

If you win Minesweeper, then congratulations! You don’t get anything yourself, really. But that’s not what it’s all about. Minesweeper isn’t about YOU, the player. It’s about Minesweeper’s Face, the main character here! And after achieving victory, it is Cool. And you helped it get here! It turns out Minesweeper is all about helping another person become their best self, the story of an average schmuck who, with the help of a clever stranger, can become the coolest in town!

Lastly, I would like to show you Minesweeper as it appears as a character, in the Roblox game Databrawl! I don’t know anything else about this game! Don’t ask me about it please! I just think this design is really fun and cool!

2:59 am - Isagi Yoichi

kind of a part two to this, but can be read as a standalone!

Horror movies are cool.

The plots were fascinating, the acting and CGI were equally captivating. The problem was that they were scary.

It's obvious that they would be, that's the whole point; to evoke thrill and to trigger chemical reactions to simulate what it'd be like to be in danger. But Yoichi can't handle that well. Barely.

He loved all movies nights with you regardless of the genre, wrapped up together with a thick blanket, hours spent staring at the laptop with intrigue. Horror movies were no different since he was with you.

Even if it's a situation that physically cannot happen, like ghost stories or tales of the supernatural, for some reason he now suddenly believes that they exist.

Yoichi knows better than anyone else that he's always been a crybaby, bursting out into tears at the mere change in weather, or whenever his dad changed the channel to anything that wasn't soccer. He even started crying when he was watching his friend play Minecraft, and an Enderman teleported out of nowhere while screeching. Roblox horror games terrified him as a child, and his parents couldn't 'boo!' him because it'd always result in inconsolable bawling. It was obvious that jump scares was never his cup of tea.

But to be this affected, was almost embarrassing.

The clock's about to strike 3 am, the time that's dubbed as devil's hour. Yoichi doesn't even know why it's labelled as that, yet he's still paranoid something will happen, in the middle of your hallway.

There's a light on, for the sake of your younger siblings to feel a bit safer. Yoichi can't believe he's taking comfort in something that was implemented for a literal child to overcome their fear of the dark.

Just don't look left and right, focus on wherever's got light.

If he was thirsty he always could've waited for morning to come, but using the bathroom was a completely different story.

It's not his fault the premise of so many horror movies involved a dark corridor, and a grotesque entity emerging out of nowhere from the shadows. It's a miracle how you're able to sleep peacefully after a whole night of watching horror movie after horror movie.

Yoichi takes a deep breath, quickly striding from the restroom to yours. With a sigh of relief he gently closes the door, ready to join you to sleep again.

"Yocchan?" A groggy voice calls out to him.

He shrieks, loudly, it's so out of character considering his level headed and confident demeanor on field.

An awkward silence fills the room, as he realizes, it was just you.

God please kill me now, is the first thing that comes to mind.

You owlishly blink, still dazed from just awaking from your slumber. "Calm down, you'll wake up my siblings." You groan and yawn. "Did something happen?"

"No, you just surprised me there. Thought you were sleeping." Good, now please pass out so he'll never have to think of this moment again.

"Liar."

"It's true."

"You're a professional soccer player, you've been able to beat that German dude who's the best striker in your age group, and you're scared of me speaking?"

At this point he was praying you'd pass out right at this moment and forget about this by the time morning comes.

"I'm just madly in love with you to the point than anything you do makes me want to scream." It's an embarrassing truth, but far from a lie. "C'mon, you need to sleep, we stayed up really late."

You jokingly scoff. "Fine."

He slowly walks over to your bed, tightly wrapping his lean arms around you, hiding from his irrational frights. When you turn off the night light he's paranoid again, grip around you strengthening.

"Yocchan."

"Yes love?"

"You're clinging onto me, really tightly."

He gulps a bit, weakening his arms. "Sorry." He buries his face into your neck instead, still scared of his own thoughts. Only a few more hours til the sun rises and the day starts, he only has to endure this for a bit more, all he has to do is pass out and he'll be okay.

"You're trembling." You mumble as you're about to doze off. "Are you cold? I'll get you a hoodie and another blanket just in case-" You barely get up before Yoichi pulls you back into bed.

"No, tonight was just scary." No point in hiding it now. "Just stay. Please. I keep thinking that stupid doll from that one movie will appear."

"Idiot." You locked him into your embrace again. " You should've told me, I don't even like horror that much, I just didn't want to watch them alone." Your fingers reach towards his face to give his cheeks a firm yet gentle pinch.

"First you pretend you're good with chili at the noodle place now this?" His mouth almost burns at the mention and thought of the memory. Sure he couldn't handle it and was turning red, but they still tasted amazing and it was worth seeing you enjoy yours.

"Yes yes, I know I'm stupid. Stupidly in love with you." It's cheesy yet it still makes you grin. "I wanna sleep now. G'night. I love you."

He knows he shouldn't go overboard and do the things he doesn't synergise with well just because you like them. But anything's worth it if it's with you, he'll eventually recover from having too much chili and one day he'll be able to sit through a jump scare without his soul leaving his body.

"I love you too." You mumble in response, smile tugging at your lips and feeling the warmth of his proximity.

With the comfort of you and your words, and how the blanket engulfed you two, any intrusive thoughts remaining in Yoichi's mind dissipated that night; though your siblings still can't comprehend why and how that scream happened last night; and who did it.

one of my many goals in life will always be making children's horror

i dont think there has been any cartoon recently that really touches on horror topics, takes itself seriously and its directed at children, the last ones i can think of are genuinely Monster House(2006), Coraline(2009), Frankenweenie(2012) and ParaNorman(2012) and all of these are from when I was a child, the absolute DROUGHT in horror directed at children specifically is awful

there is a reason children are so attracted to horror topics and it's because children are curious of all this horrific things that happen to people and horror allows them to explore these topics in a safe way, from the safest point of view of things that never happened, fiction is the safest way to explore this kind of topics from

that's why things like fnaf, poppy playtime, rainbow friends(roblox map) and doors (also roblox) are so popular, because they can absolutely disengage from this in the blink of an eye, you can stop seeing this stuff by shutting off your electronics

you know what is the most popular thing among 7 year olds that i know??? fucking. siren. heads. why??? i have no fucking idea

and meanwhile i contribute a lot of things to the recent popularity of The Amazing Digital Circus (the animation lay offs, the fact that it has integrated audio switch for different languages and the fact that it just fucking slaps) we cannot ignore the fact that its becoming popular with the same public that fnaf was getting popular in 2014, children

do i think TADC is necessary horror? nope, it is a dark comedy, but holy shit that the concept is absolutely horrifying, it is a scary thing to happen and children would believe it could happen, like, back in 2014 i was 10 and i believed the purple guy was real and lived in my little latin american town

this and the fact that TADC looks so nice, has this amazing lovable characters, the acting is amazing and the bright colors that basically yell at you to look at it, children feel invited to watch it, even if they dont understand it

yk who of the kids i babysit liked it the most?? the six year old, she didn't understand shit and she loved it

and its because its an unlikely scenario and its safe to explore it, its safe to think about putting on a headset and end up in a game from before they were born

that's what has contributed to the rise of things like this through all this time, dark AUs of MLP, TMNT, TAWOG, etc, the idea of creepypastas, whatever the FUCK are ARGs the fact that its a safe place where you can explore horrible and scary subject from a curious stand point with nothing happening to you

TL;DR: children's horror is important because children need to satisfy their curiosity without being in danger
