February 2025 “I wish you were here,” you whispered into the phone that you weren’t supposed to have in the talk show studio. “I’m shaking like a leaf.”

“You’ll do great, my love,” he reassured you and you could hear a lot of background noise from the other people at the airport. “I’ll see you soon.”

No sooner had the call ended that the studio lights dimmed and the live audience fell silent.

“Now our next guest really needs no introduction,” Jimmy Fallon began to say while you nervously paced behind the curtain, until Bea pulled you to a stop, “her debut self-titled album went platinum and I have no doubt her new album, Safety Car, will be just as good. Please, put your hands together for Y/N.”

Bea gave you an encouraging push and you forced yourself to focus on putting one foot in front of the other. No matter how many times you took the stage for a concert, or an interview, you still found yourself nervous - but you equally loved the thrill that came with it.

Once you were sitting in the chair the jitters faded away and you fell into the rhythm of answering the questions he fired your way.

“So, Safety Car, talk me through this album. How did you come up with the name?”

“Obviously Charles is a huge part of my life, we have known each other for a couple of years now, and this album was made collaboratively with him. That’s all him on the piano with pieces that he composed, so the journey of this album gives a glimpse into that relationship we have, especially the ups and downs that come with life. 

“I’m not sure if you keep up with Formula One, Jimmy, but when there’s danger on the track they deploy a safety car to guide the drivers through that peril. This whole album is about being each other's safety car and helping navigate the other through those hard times.”

“Wow, that is so wholesome and sweet,” he gushed before looking down at his cue card. “But what exactly is ‘that relationship’? Because we know you and Charles are together, everyone and their dog knows you two are together, but there was never actually any announcement as such and now there’s rumours that you secretly tied the knot while you were at the Vegas Grand Prix this year?”

You tipped your head back with a laugh. “You’ll have to ask him that because I don’t think he ever officially asked me out. We kind of just collided and stayed that way.”

“So you aren’t together?” he gasped like it was some scandalous news but you just gave him a wink.

“We love each other dearly, I mean, we found each other when we were both going through a difficult time and helped each other to heal. Any chance we have at seeing each other we take but we have always been aware that the reality is that our lives are in very different places. Charles’ work takes him all over the world and with my second tour coming up there just aren't a lot of places where our lines intersect.” 

The crowd sighed sadly but you shrugged it off with a smile as you continued, “Neither of us would ask the other to give up on their dreams, that wouldn’t be love then, would it? It’s what inspired my first single Love Is Letting Go. Charles had an amazing 2024 season and has renewed his contract with Ferrari, and his dream is to win a championship with them in particular so he’s very focused on that for this coming year and I’m so proud of him. Maybe one day our lives will be at the same pace but for now we cherish the moments we do get.”

“Oh don’t we know it,” the host chuckled. “We have all seen the photos floating around whenever you two hit the town. Looks like you have some pretty wild nights out together.”

“We do have a lot of fun. Why not? Life’s too short, might as well be wild and free.”

“That is true, but are you free? How else do you explain this photo?”

A picture appeared on the screen that had been taken inside the infamous White Chapel in Las Vegas. It wasn’t exactly clear who was in the photo because of the costumes but it didn’t take a genius to work out who was standing at the altar getting married. 

Pierre’s brown hair stuck out the front of a slick jet-black coifed wig while Bea’s white halter dress barely contained her boobs as she twerked against him. It was a little harder to tell it was you and Charles in front of Arthur, who had bought an online Certificate of Ordination so he could be the celebrant. Your brother-in-law had spent so long trying to find a printer in the hotel that he was last to arrive and left with a Star Wars costume.

“Well, Jimmy, I believe that is Darth Vader, Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe, and Bonnie and Clyde. And it looks like they are having one hell of a time.”

“That’s all you’re gonna give us?” he asked with a chuckle and mock disappointment as he shook his head. “Fine, fine. Can you at least give us a song?”

The small side stage was dark when you took your place at the microphone but when the lights came on and illuminated the piano it wasn’t Bea that was sitting there as planned.

The crowd screamed as they saw Charles and your eyes widened, a smile growing as you drank him in after a long two weeks apart. “You’re meant to be on a plane.”

“I got on an earlier one,” he said, the piano microphone picking up his soft words as he sent a wink to the camera, “so I could support my beautiful, talented wife.”

The air froze for a split second before chaos erupted and the audience cheered.

You looked across the stage at Jimmy as a smile broke on your face. “Uh-oh, busted!” You reached into your pocket and slipped the sedate diamond ring you had chosen, opting for something smaller than the huge rock that Charles would have gone for, and slipped it back on your finger that had felt empty without it. “I guess this makes us pretty official.”

Charles teased the crowd as he played the wedding march tune. “There was never any doubt in my mind.”

There aren't a lot of NaeJunko/NaeRyoko shippers within the fandom. I must ask what caused you to have an interest in this ship. Do you have any headcanons for them, especially for NaeRyoko? (NaeRyoko has the potential to be so wholesome.) I'm not particularly fond of the Yasuke x Ryoko/Junko ship.

Also, what are your thoughts on this weird tendency of people to make Makoto an absolute pushover towards Junko? Like, all the characters you could choose, and people pick Junko that he's a pushover? The same person he proactively defies. (I'm not saying that Makoto can't be intimidated by Junko, but the amount of times I've seen, heard, and read that he will easily break is absurd.)

A similar thing to apply for Junko if people see her super one noted and incredibly misinterpret her character. People generally think that Junko is heartless. Like not caring about Mukuro, Class 78, or Yasuke. When I hear someone say that Junko doesn't care about Yasuke. I lose brain cells. It is as if nobody read DR0, especially the ending.

Sorry for the long post. I left these thoughts in my head for a while.

uh I guess in a way I always liked it from an aesthetic standpoint but when I ended up learning more about each character the more perfect the ship was it was a comfort ship in a way if they can find happiness I could. along with so many other things. and man, I have so many head canons, but I always choke up when I am asked specifically, I cannot think straight besides knowing Junko’s a cuddler and likes to cuddle Makoto I have many, but you would need to ask specific question. though I always did have this idea of what if Makoto went with and helped Ryoko cause you know he tried to and was stopped by mukuro but I think… maybe if he went with her shed have a happy ending cause it was always my belief that before Matsuda dies there is still a chance for redemption for her its only after he dies that she’s beyond the point of no return, I’m soft hearted like that, oh and imagine Makoto calming her down after a panic attack something no one else ever did that be nice just him comforting her and giving her the love she never got. and I agree hate yasuke that boy and right for her never gave her what she needed I could go on and on but I know some of my followers like him so I won’t offended them just know I don’t, as for the pushover thing I don’t really have any thoughts but I agree MAKOTO IS A STRONG INDEPENDENT MAN he can handle anything Junko throws at him always has and always will and it’s a shame people miss that as its one of my favorite things about their dynamic how on equal ground they are. and I to agree with the other thing a lot of people then to ignore Junko’s more complexities in her character sure they are hidden but they are there and are so interesting and really add that punch and its quite annoying when fan stories make her one note for the sake of someone else’s angst I could go on and on about her but that’s what my pinned analysis is for but even then there’s so many things I can add to that but I just don’t know where to add them

So I just wanted to let you know that I am still thinking about Tom and his dad's relationship. I have just now finished another reread of I'll ride and just. You wrote their relationship with so many facets I am in awe. Tom thinking his dad does not love him, thinking he is not enough, basically raising his sibling and trying his best to defend them. Meanwhile Bill constantly criticizing but still loving his children so much? I loved reading the scene where Bill carefully cradles Tom's face and softly brushes away his hair after the bird strike, first from Tom's perspective and later on Mav's? Beautiful. Just in general, Mav observing this whole clusterfuck and still knowing that Bill loves Tom, that he cares for him?! I also truly think Bill might not have known how well Tom did in a) the Academy and b) in the Navy/his career so far. I love seeing Mav standing up for Tom and just hammering it home how good Tom is, how excellent he is. I think Bill just decided against actually finding out about Tom's talents and capabilities the second Tom decided to go Navy instead of Marines, you know? That five year period of them not talking? Or maybe he just needed an outsider's perspective and judgement on Tom. And what I really really love? I know you said it in multiple other answers already, but Bill being kind of nice, warm, patient (grandfatherly?) with Bradley is so jarring to see and makes the whole strained relationship he has with his children so bittersweet. We know he struggled with the end of his career and differentiating between career and family, but ultimately he is capable of being a family person and he is really good with Bradley. About Bradley's clay medal, about all his tank questions, when he attends Bradley's T-Ball game. It's so sweet and just gives all of this heaps of complexity because he is not just this strange bad dad who did not want to be a dad. Like yes we see him more lenient/slightly more supportive with Tim and Rachel and Sarah but it is not the same. Oh and I am 100% sure that the moment that cemented to Eleanor that Pete was family and only has Tom's best interests at heart was when Pete argued with Bill during Thanksgiving. That scene makes my day, how he casually speaks up, does not back down, Pete ends the discussion not Bill and how Pete immediately compliments Eleanor's cooking afterwards. Just Pete showing his Mav-side: being polite and charming after standing up for Tom and showing his slightly feral side. Just. I am genuinely in awe how you depict all kinds of relationships with so many layers. So realistic and wholesome!

Nonnie this lives in my head rent free, just so you know. Please allow me to talk a bit more about who Bill Kazansky is as a person, and why I actually love him a whole whole lot despite how complicated the man is, because you really only see him from Pete & Tom's perspective, but the fact that Bradley loves him in about .5 seconds is kind of a clue to who he really is deep, deep down.

Spoilers under the cut!

One of the themes of this story is, "What does it mean to be a father?" There are so many different ways to do it and it often has nothing to do with blood relations. But Tom is definitely learning what exactly it means to be a father through his relationship with Bradley, and it's kind of going to be a key going forward because he has a different perspective he didn't have before Bradley became such an integral part of his life. Ditto for Pete, just in a different way, and his relationship with Viper is equally complicated just in different ways.

Bill is a very multifaceted guy. I think it's important to think of him in the context of his life experiences. He fought in the Vietnam war and that really changed who he was, fundamentally, as a person. PTSD is definitely on the table, even though our understanding of PTSD has changed so much in recent years and back then they only sort of knew that it was even something that happened (shell shock, battle fatigue, etc, we all know what they actually mean is PTSD, something they understood much better by studying veterans of the Vietnam War).

Coming home for Bill was hard. Loud noises were hard. Sudden movements were hard. The dark was hard. Cars backfiring were hard. Screaming was hard. And he lived in a house with little kids at the time all of them clamoring for his attention because Daddy was home, and I think that probably just about killed him, and there is definitely a lot of guilt there. Deep down he knows he wasn't the kind of father they needed back then; couldn't be, was incapable of being, because he was so traumatized by what he saw/experienced/had to do in the name of his country.

To me, Bill probably took as many opportunities to not be home as he could. He would have had nightmares, flashbacks, the whole nine yards. He would have been irritable and short tempered and easily triggered, and I think he probably yelled, and he probably felt so guilty afterwards that he wanted to die. I feel like he probably clung to his wife a lot and sobbed into her shoulder at night when nobody could see him, and I think Eleanor probably struggled so much to take care of her kids and now suddenly have her sweet, caring, wonderful husband reduced to this broken man who was a shadow of his former self. His nightmares probably woke the whole house until he started to avoid sleeping, and that probably just turned things even worse.

(Now I want to write this from Bill or Eleanor's POV but it will honestly break my heart so maybe not but I digress as I often tend to do).

It makes me a little sad that some have asked if he hit his kids... I think Bill is the kind of guy who is terrified of hurting them, and so he distanced himself while he tried to get his head back on straight. Keep in mind this was the 60's-70's so talking about it was out of the question (they just didn't DO THAT back then, you know? Not regularly or in any way accepted by society). He was trying to work through it all on his own not wanting to be a burden.

What Bill needed was help, therapy, a healthy outlet. What he got instead was more training, volunteering to be out in the field as much as possible because that was normal to him. He knew how to function there; he did not know how to function in a warm house in a soft bed with a loving wife and little kids who just wanted to be with him.

And Tom? Well, he remembers. He was born in 1961, so baby Tom remembered Daddy before Vietnam. Maybe not anything sharp or exact, but to a young Tom (because believe me, little kids remember deep down even if they don't have a specific memory), it would have been so jarring having this stranger with his dad's face in his house, because where was the guy who cuddled him? Read to him? Why is daddy mad all the time? Why is he yelling? Why doesn't he love me?

Meanwhile, Bill eventually got better or as better as he could get in the context of the time period. Functioning, you could even say. Everyone telling him to just forget Vietnam ever happened while people spit on him etc (I do not envy Vietnam veterans, many of whom were drafted, having to go through what they went through, but I'm trying to stay on topic here). So, being a logical military man, he probably compartmentalized like hell and just locked it all away (Sound familiar? Looking at you, Thomas).

Then his girls were there, and they weren't wary of him like the boys had learned to be because they'd been far too little, and it was probably so relieving to him that they could just know him as he was now and not how he was before. And that definitely plays into the dynamics between the whole family, and why Tim gets away with what he does because it's hard for Bill to reprimand him as much as he does the older boys, because that's his baby, but it also frustrates him because Timmy often goes to Tom when he needs things and not him by virtue of Tom being there all the time and Bill only being there sometimes.

Anyway, the point is, William "Bill" Kazansky is a deeply traumatized person who puts up a good front of being America's Golden Boy, Decorated Colonel, Celebrated Military Officer, Beloved By His Men For Sticking With Them In The Trenches. But deep down he's just as broken as everyone else.

And then Ellie comes along and it's a balm to his heart because she just loves him to bits and pieces and doesn't give a flying fuck about family history because she's three and convinced she's the center of the universe (as all three year olds are wont to do). Bradley then enters his life, and he's young and desperate for attention and reminds him so much of Tom that it breaks his heart a little bit, because once upon a time Tom asked him a million questions an hour just like Bradley does, and he wants to talk about tanks and the Marines and what it was like to ride in helicopters (a topic most in the Kazansky family avoid, because they are perfectly aware that the Vietnam War was not a cakewalk).

Anyways. I guess what I'm trying to say is thank you for noticing that Bill is a human being and a complicated one at that. I tried to make him as human as I could and I've read so many articles about the Vietnam War I feel a little crosseyed sometimes, but he's not a bad guy, not at all. Just an idiot sometimes, but then again, aren't we all?

Also, while we're on the topic, Bill Kazansky likes Pete Mitchell a whole hell of a lot even if it's grudging. Pete was the first person in literal years to call him on his shit to his face (who isn't his wife, anyway), and while he didn't enjoy it at the time, it definitely made him sit up and pay the fuck attention, not just to Pete, but to Tom, too.

in this one, he owns a coffee shop.

it's a damned good one too, with regular customers and everything. his hires aren't anything to scoff at either—there's this really tall, really buff barista who comes straight from the rainforests of indonesia and can tell a bean's freshness just from smelling them (and sometimes brings his pet ferret to work, which is both a riot and a health hazard eiden has to work around for the inspectors), as well as the shyer, more inexperienced college graduate working part-time shifts to support his grad degree and his lovely grandparents at home, who gets really nervous about the espresso machine at first but later on becomes a pro and even teaches himself how to fix it when it breaks down.

yeah, quincy and yakumo are definitely his best hires (no favoritism though)!

alongside that he has his regular customers: the uptight head of some security firm who always comes in in the morning for eiden's strongest cup of caffeine before marching off to work (it takes him a month before he gets the guy to tell him his name is edmond so eiden can stop pretending he didn't google search him up the first day), the probably-is-a-CEO-or-a-mafia-heir-can't-decide-which business-coded guy who somehow never shows up in a suit, but just radiates money (and also had to be asked outside by eiden once, when he took out a fancy pipe and just started smoking indoors), the always wholesome priest of their local church, and the pair of high schoolers who drop by every week for snacks, short-and-pink dragging the cousin he always bullies (and who has a fatal weakness to eiden's hand-made croissants).

so all in all, life is good.

it maybe gets even a little better when he starts seeing some of his adult favorites and regulars after work on more, cough, intimate terms.

but then one day, he shows up.

towering, blond, handsome, and ridiculously well-dressed—the kind of guy you expect to ask his assistant to get him coffee, not come into a shop and order for himself.

and what the heck, he doesn't even ask for coffee, but a cup of tea. earl grey and a scone to go with it and—you know what, the customer is always right so eiden personally delivers the order with a flourish and a smile.

"first time here?" he asks, charming as always.

the guy barely looks at him. "yes. how long have you been open?"

eiden tells him and the guy asks more questions so surprisingly, they get along pretty well. by the time he's done it's getting to closing hours on a sunday, but it's quincy who grabs him during cleanup with a frown.

"what's wrong?" eiden asks him.

quincy just shakes his head. "he asked too many questions."

"maybe he was just interested in the person answering them?" eiden half-jokes. he doesn't think more of it, but the words do stick with him after that.

the blond guy doesn't come again, but a week later someone equally attractive shows up: black hair, green eyes, also pretty tall. he's dressed in a suit (but stiffly, it looks like he doesn't usually wear those kind of clothes) and introduces himself as klaus avenue, a representative of blah-and-blah company here to see the manager.

more importantly, he's part of a franchise firm here to buy them out.

of course eiden says no—this is his coffee shop and not some fancy brand name, dammit—but klaus only looks troubled. "it'll be better if you agree to the contract terms," he starts, "or else aurelius—i mean, my boss—will make trouble."

he probably means lawyers. well pooh pooh to them, eiden's got a lawyer too—on a technicality: his neighbor rei dabbles in law alongside his experiments and can hold his ground in a courthouse just fine.

when klaus finally sighs and asks him what would convince him, eiden challenges him to work for them instead to see why they're worth staying as an independent business.

to his surprise, klaus agrees.

somehow the arrangement lasts for weeks. it soon becomes apparent that klaus himself is using his "trial employment period" to delay the company's actions as much as possible, which works to an extent.

until the "boss" reappears.

eiden recognizes him at a glance: it's the same blond bastard who ordered tea and scones in his shop! he confronts the guy, but aurelius counters back by what he thinks he's doing hiring his boyfriend to work under him. apparently it's fine when aury does it since klaus is destined to sit on the board of directors for him one day, but not so in the case of some lowly coffee shop.

klaus disagrees. aurelius ignores him and somehow, eiden and his coffee shop gets caught in the middle of a cold war between their power couple. apparently this is all the impetus klaus needs to expose his boyfriend’s questionable business practices.

(eiden would ask, “why have him be your boyfriend at all?” but apparently this was the only way to stop aury from gaining a monopoly on the food and restaurant business? ??)

both sides use their best weapons: aurelius mobilizes the media to promote their agenda while klaus reaches out to grassroots movements for support. the disagreement reaches national TV and eiden’s coffee gets a buttload of publicity and business in the process. (it’s not all good, though: quincy has to wrestle with fame-hungry influencers crowding the doors while yakumo’s pressured to tears during one particularly busy lunch rush one day.) in the end eiden even has to close up shop for a few days for everyone’s mental health.

then rei calls with more bad news: aurelius has hired a bunch of big-clout, expensive lawyers to crush them in court and moreover, won olivine to his side in some form of weird guilt-trip reverse-pep-talk that has the poor priest trying to convince eiden to give in to the other side.

seeing this, klaus can’t sit still and proposes that eiden helps him with plan B: proposing marriage.

“wait, what?”

“if being his boyfriend was step 1, then marriage should be step 2.”

“will it really work with that bas—uh, i mean that president?”

“we can give it a try.”

“but klaus…if it works then that means you’ll have to marry him for real.”

to eiden’s shock, klaus only blushes in response.

“um, you don’t have to worry about that. i don’t mind…”

and so operation d-day (date day) commenced. at the very end klaus gets on his knees and proposes to aurelius right inside eiden’s coffee shop, surrounded by a marching band commanded by edmond with instruments rented from kuya (again, eiden still doesn’t know what he does) while eiden’s custom-baked sweets and yakumo’s tea and quincy’s silent stare looks on.

klaus thoughtfully mentions how special this moment is, and how much more special it’d remain if the coffee shop it happened in never changed but existed on its own independent of a franchise—and okay, a bunch of other mushy lines too, but honestly eiden can’t or doesn’t want to remember them when the blond bastard’s involved.

it works, and aurelius calls off everything to formally enter into an engagement with his beloved. he even agrees to the unholiest of unholies and lets his franchise workers unionize.

love, eiden marvels, really is a power that works wonders.

one year later, eiden’s coffee shop is thriving, his friends/lovers are all living well (though it took a few sessions to fix olivine back up again), and they’ve been invited to the “wedding of the century” for klaus and aurelius, all expenses paid, at some exotic location halfway across the world.

eiden gleefully closes the shop for his free vacation with his besties to witness the marriage of a guy he hates (& one that he thinks is all right, in the end).

Tsukishima Kei

His eyes would constantly drift to you during class hours, lips twitching into a smile as he would watch you struggle with the assignment sheet given during history class.

Would take that as a leeway to make conversation and help you out.

"Tsk, can't even do a simple history assignment?"

Just sits down next to you and points out what you did wrong while helping you out.

Flinches his hand away and mutters a sorry if your hands accidentally graze each others.

He knows how strict the dating rules were and he admired it, thinking it was a safe way to keep them away from harm and heartbreak.

Becomes your unofficial tutor just to spend more time with you.

Has the urge to flick your forehead most times when you purposely tease him.

Is worried when he sees you zoning out in the middle of class during Ramadan, you have to convince him you're fine and that you're getting your studying done despite the odd sleep schedule you've created.

He'll give you a small box of his favourite treat, strawberry short cake, randomly throughout Ramadan because he knows you crave more sweets during the days you fast than regular days.

He calls you a masochist when he finds you watching cooking/baking videos while fasting.

Will stop by your house to drop off pastries during Eid for you and your family because he wants to peak at you all dressed up as he's only seen you in your school uniform or in casual but modest fashion.

He feels a sense of security, enjoying the aspect of getting to know someone with no sense of rush.

Kuroo Tetsurou

He's such an awkward nerd please.

Wants to approach you but fears he might accidentally offend you due to his provocative nature, hence resorts to staring at you from across the room.

Would research more about your religion and would use that as a way to start small talk;

“Hey, uh, I was wondering how do you manage to pray Zuhr when you’re in school? Isn’t it bad that you have to miss it?”

“Oh uh, I usually run home as soon as I can or pray in my club room if there are meetings, my club members are very understanding.”

“Oh... I see.”

“That’s pretty cool of you to be concerned, Kuroo-san.”

Cue him asking you random but wholesome questions with genuine curiosity.

“Did you know men who oppress women are considered to not follow Islam? I find that really nice that women are equal to men in your religion!”

You smile at him and his interest in your religion.

Study sessions in the library because you both wanted to spend time with each other but he knows it is wrong for a male to be alone in the same room as the opposite gender so you both opted for the library where there are lots of people.

Gasps and immediately looks away when you unravel the scarf around your head to fix;

“Y/n! You can’t do that!!”

“I’m wearing an underscarf calm down.”

You rolled your eyes at the dramatic male but smiled at his respectful nature.

Ramadan? Catch him ruining his sleep schedule just to have movie nights with you through the phone and Netflix Party.

Kenma teases him about it because Kuroo used to yell at him about his own staying up late gaming obsession.

Likes it when you wear a cap on top of your hijab, he thinks it looks cool on you.

He’ll convince you to skip school during Eid if it falls on a school day, telling you that it’s important that you spend at least the first day of it with your family. 

Overall, he’s the type to keep up with the Islamic calendar and learn new facts daily as he asks you to explain each and everything about your religion and lifestyle.

Sugawara Koushi

See’s you for the first time with Kiyoko when he went to excuse her from class for managerial duties.

Smitten from first sight.

Begs Kiyoko to let you be her assistant manager.

He keeps a distance from you during your first introduction and conversation because he didn’t know what you were comfortable with.

He was in awe to find out there were sports hijab when he saw you sporting one to play a short game with an over-enthusiastic Hinata.

“Here, stay hydrated.”

Hands you a bottle of water along with a towel, a newfound respect for playing in hot weather conditions fully covered. 

Due to the chaotic nature of the first and second years, Sugawara would run to cover your eyes with his jacket or hover his hands in front of your face whenever Tanaka would rip off his shirt to swing around whenever he spiked.

Sugawara had to stop himself multiple times from clapping his hand onto your shoulder, resulting in him just smacking either Asahi or Daichi when they mention him almost touching you.

Outings between you two is always monitored by the third years, Asahi smiling proudly at his friend Suga while Daichi and Kiyoko would sneakily take candid pictures of you both.

“What’s one verse you hold dear to your heart?”

You look at him from the warm mug of drink you are holding, tilting your head as you look at him in confusion. Sugawara felt the tips of his ears go red at the cute expression you held, and explains his question.

“Ah,” you thought long and hard before giving him an answer, “ ‘Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear...’ I find that part of the verse very reassuring in times when I feel like I’m overwhelmed.”

Sugawara held onto every word, finding the beauty behind those words, he felt at peace. “I’ll keep that in mind.” He smiles.

It felt like he was more excited than you for Ramadan.

He would read out loud the Japanese translation of the Quran after you read out the Arabic words in a beautiful and soothing voice. He wanted to understand and learn.

He was hooked onto the peaceful energy the month brought despite life going on normally.

This man would wear a formal Kimono when your family invites his over for Eid, he wanted to make the best impression despite already meeting them in passing.

Suga had a sense of security and comfort around him and you felt lucky to have met someone such as him.

Bokuto Koutarou 

Oh God.

Akaashi had a field day trying to stop him from initiating any and every kind of physical affection when he first introduced you to him.

Bokuto is a man who expresses himself with affection, so he was lucky for Akaashi to explain to him why he shouldn’t initiate any physical affection without asking for what you considered crossing a boundary.

He knows he can’t drag you to the gym to watch him play volleyball by hand, so he asks you to hold onto the end of a pen, which you took, confused as to what the male exactly wants before realizing he was holding the other end and using that to drag you to where the gym was.

It was oddly endearing.

“Did you see my spike, Y/n?! Didya see?!”

“Yes, Bokuto. It was really cool!”

Cue a chest puffed up Bokuto who grinned with pride.

Invites you to eat lunch with him and Akaashi on the roof.

Having to refuse his food because you weren’t sure if there was pork in it or not.

This made Bokuto stop bringing in food that contained pork, not knowing even aside from that, he had to have the halal form of chicken or beef.

Akaashi had to explain everything to him when he asked him once.

Tried to go vegetarian one day, failed the minute he took a bite out of his food.

Feels bad when he eats on days you are fasting, so he tries finishing the meal before you come up to their usual meeting spot, resulting in him giving himself a stomach ache.

Brings you tuna filled onigiri to take home so you can eat it as a snack during the night after breaking your fast.

Sends you spam messages minutes before having to break your fast;

‘Are you excited to eat?!?!?!’

‘What are you having today?!?’

‘If you want to get any snacks later let me know! :D’

‘ONE MINUTE LEFT!!’

Tough on the outside but soft on the inside delinquent and the devilish lonely rich boy who'll go batshit crazy if his friends are in danger. Both of them learning to trust and very slowly showing their vulnerable sides to each other.... I can't say much, it's already a spoiler that they become closer because in the story they start as strangers or even "enemies". They're also secondary characters so they make appearance later in the story and gradually gain more importance (well, it started with them being secondary but tbh now they're one of the main characters with a lot of focus AND I AM SO HAPPY). But anyway, I am absolutely obsessed with them.

The original main pair (zhanyi) has completely different dynamic and vibe, but I love them and enjoy their story and relationship very much as well <3

This series has such variety of multilayered characters who honestly could have their own separate manhuas. I absolutely recommend 19 days, it started like absolute crack but gained so much depth and action and angst and questioning yourself and 'am I abnormal for having feelings for you' and trust and progress in relationships and-

The guys are hella funny but also very smart and cool, the girls are intense and ambitious and need to have everything under control but are also very sweet and loving. The shows are light and hilarious, good as a stress relief.

The Good Place - Chidi and Eleanor

First of all I recommend The Good Place in general, a wild ride of unexpected twists and turns, each reveal more “whaaat” than the previous one, with diverse representation and filled with philosophical questions and lessons, created by people who love philosophy. Chidi and Eleanor are complete opposites - a nerd with severe anxiety issues who spent his whole life buried in books, and a bi disaster who partied hard, made a lot of bad things, and cared mostly about herself. They learn from each other and complement each other, all the while growing and changing right in front of our eyes.

HAIDAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA im love him your honor. Get a partner who can do both (be sweet and supportive, be badass and taking no bullshit). I truly believe they'd be happy and just right for each other, and I want them to be together 😭😭

Yuri on ice - Yuri and Victor

Svvord of Truth - Richard and KahIan

I kinda feel like I owe it to them to mention them here, probably my earliest couple on this list. It’s an old high fantasy series which I read when I plunged straight into puberty, I haven't read it as a more mature person so I wonder if there are some harmful stereotypes I didn't see or how many typical tropes there are (well e.g. the main guy is so ridiculously overpowered and smarter/holier-than-thou, and there is a lot of black and white there) but also it’s a really complex world with interesting mechanics. However, what truly makes me remember this series fondly is because it was there with me when I was going through a lot of hardships, showing me a rich world with many people worth loving, strong women who I admired and strived to be, wise people of different backgrounds, cultures, and ages. It taught me how important it is to be kind and compassionate, that no matter how desperate your situation can get there is always hope and a way, that people who care about you will be there for you when you need them, and that you need to reciprocate as well. To always “think about the solution, not about the problem” which became the thing I repeat to myself every time I start struggling. The main couple also showed me what I want to strive for in a good relationship - support, understanding, standing by each other’s side no matter what, deep respect for each other and treating each other as equals, working for the relationship, and most importantly trusting each other. The series might be a typical high fantasy but for my growing and messed up mind it was a good teacher who reminded me of things we consider obvious but tend to forget, and might have played a significant role in who I am now.

Who do you feel awkward around the members?

The video starts with that question, portraying a member seemingly dazed as she looked at a window, her head titled as her voice in the form of a voice-over filled the entire audio, the simple background music accompanying her naturally deep alto tone.

"Doyoung...ssi" Aiko showed a strained smile, unsure what to call the member (they weren't that close for her to call him oppa).

"Aiko...nim" Doyoung responded equally, the camera shifting to show his figure on another background, but the familiarity had presumed fans to think that it was in the same filming site.

"Aiko is usually very awkward with anyone she isn't close with." This time, the frame shows two members: Haechan and Mark, walkie-talkies in their hands as they were invited to 'help' the two members feel less awkward.

"That's true," Mark agreed with his sentiment.

"Although she does open up very quickly if she finds the person comfortable."

"But Doyoung-hyung, ah" Haechan sighed,

"Yeah, he told me he's scared of Aiko." Laughter ensued Mark, with Haechan scoffing but slightly guilty that he may have been the reason why the older member avoided Aiko. (He might have unconsciously told many stories about the savage side of the neko-member instead of her utterly adorable one.)

Shrugging, Haechan voiced out, "I would be too if I didn't know how cute she could actually be. Aiko, hah, is also such a tsundere."

"True; so we have a tsundere and a scaredy-cat, this is gonna fun."

First Meeting

The neko-member entered the set first, sitting properly on one of the chairs within the filming set, her hand politely placed together as she took a look around.

Suddenly, she heard a voice behind her,

"It's been long, have you missed me?" It was Doyoung, standing as if he wanted to be buried on the ground right then and there, as the whole of his face was red, his figure forced into a position that allowed their faces to be close.

After a few seconds of silence, Doyoung stood straight, covering his face with his hands as he tried to explain himself.

"Haechan told me to do this."

Aiko stifled a chuckle, accepting his excuse as she stood up herself and bowed properly, greeting the older member with respect. This bit surprised Doyoung quite a bit, finding her respectful nature something unexpected from Haechan's stories.

"Yes, I understand."

Back in the MC lounge, Haechan laughed at Doyoung's expression, "Wah, I feel like I've ruined Aiko's image to Doyoung, I feel so sorry."

Doyoung then took the chance to initiate and lead the flow of the conversation, starting with a:

"Do you feel awkward with me?"

"Yes." Aiko answered firmly, "But I would really like to get close to you, Taeyong-oppa told me you were a great person." She finished, showing a genuine smile that even the dreamies knew was reserved for people she actually adored and respected (but were still not closed with).

"Hah. I missed the days when Aiko would smile at me like that, now all she does is scoff at me and reject my love." Haechan sulked, making Mark pat his back and reassure him with a teasing smile,

"That's Aiko's love language to you now."

"I don't want it!"

Missions and Talks

"Introduce yourselves." Aiko's earpiece picked up Mark's command and was about to formally introduce herself when Doyoung suddenly stood up, raising his hands above his head as he cheered,

"I say Do, you say Young" The crack of his voice hinted at Aiko that this must be Haechan's doing, and so she played along, not wanting to embarrass the member alone.

"Do—"

"—Young!"

When it was Aiko's turn, Mark had challenged her to freestyle, and so Aiko introduced herself the way she did when she was back at Unpretty Rapstar (but of course in a more wholesome way).

Doyoung (Haechan and Mark—though it was not shown), clapped his hands loudly, genuinely amazed at the girl's talent.

"Wah, you're really amazing. I mean it." He stated with utmost sincerity, as her talent was actually one of the reasons why he found her so intimidating.

The segment moved on to smaller talks, eventually leading up to a guessing game between the duo.

"What vegetables do I hate?" Doyoung started, not expecting much from the member; having that question the only one to pop up the moment he was tasked to ask her something about himself.

"Coriander and cucumber?" Aiko answered, albeit unsurely.

"Oh, how did you know?" Now Doyoung was surprised, as the detail was rarely disclosed even to the fans.

"Taeyong-oppa told me about it when I asked about you." She admitted shyly,

"You wanted to know about me?" Again, Doyoung was shocked, but it was now more of how he found the situation absolutely endearing rather than how it was uncharacteristic of Aiko.

He was starting to realize that maybe what Haechan was saying was simply one side of the coin and that there's actually a whole lot more when it comes to her character.

Aiko unabashedly nodded her head as a response, "I really look up to you a lot, your vocal range is amazing to me; so I wanted to get to know you better without making you uncomfortable."

Doyoung scoffed in disbelief; now 80% sure that Aiko was just lovable, and now guilt was pooling in his stomach; having remorse over the fact that Aiko noticed and even avoided him for his own solace.

"Yah, I'm really sorry." He started, hand over his mouth as his expression showed subtle sadness.

The MCs were quiet by this time, letting the duo have their moment.

"Honestly, I was scared of you; but you never made me uncomfortable, that was never my intention for not getting close to you." He admitted sincerely.

Aiko nodded once more, "I know. From Yuta-oppa paired with Taeyong-oppa's stories, I've never assumed you were a bad person. I guess it was my fault also for not consulting with you directly." She showed a sheepish smile, awkwardly scratching her nape.

"Ah, no. It wasn't your fault at all. Yah, Aiko, I'm really sorry. I just look up to you so much, especially when you came out at Unpretty Rapstar so I found you intimidating."

His confession, this time, made Aiko shocked, "You watched the program?"

Doyoung bobbed his head, a little bit enthusiastically, "Eung, I even voted for you. I really think you're rapping is truly awesome."

"Wah. Thank you," She expressed, wholeheartedly grateful that someone, that she wasn't even close with, supported her at that mentally taxing time.

There was then silence, but both knew (and even the MCs knew), that it wasn't an unbearable one this time, but a rather serene silence.

After a few more seconds, however, and Haechan destroyed it with one command, the MCs back to teasing the now-not-awkward-duo with tasks they would never do on their own.

"Aiko say aing." He spoke without much thought, not expecting anything as he knew how the member hated aegyo.

"Aing." Everyone was stilled. Doyoung was wide-eyed, Mark was stifling a laugh, and Haechan's cheeks were red.

Not believing his eyes, Haechan tried to make the girl do it again,

"One more time, tilt your head and blink once."

Aiko, being in the mood, followed his instructions with relative ease (turns out when she's happy, she's willing to do anything.)

"Ainggggg."

Haechan dropped his device, as Mark was already doubling over in laughter.

"That's done." Haechan raised his hands above his head as if he was giving up.

"Doyoung thinks you're adorable now." Aiko's earpiece managed to pick up from Mark's talkie.

Confirming what her members thought, she looked over to the man in front of her; his face visibly red with an adoring gummy grin on his face.

Seeing his expression, Haechan grabbed his talkie back, a proud tone on his voice as he uttered,

"That's it, welcome to the I LOVE AIKO club, hyung."

Chapter 1

Synopsis: Alienist’s notes are private, sometimes gruesome, secrets of others and of himself.Those pages belongs to secrecy and decadence, have a glimpse to this world made of drafts, notes, accidents and reflections. Or maybe it is you the only person that should ever reach for it.

While you read this imagine Laszlo mostly at the end of his day, scraping the ideas and the thoughts, adjusting previous notes with additions, closing the day behind himself with a couple of sentences while sitting in his evening robe, a good glass of whiskey and his glasses bridged almost at the tip of his nose. Or maybe imagine yourself, you sneaky thing, reach for it from a far shelf.

Warnings: listen, this is the set of ideas and confessions of a man living in the 1890’s. Most of them will be outdated, rough, even deprecating in some analysis of the roles of men, women and social status, religion, etc.So be prepared, my point is to make Laszlo reflect upon those topics, but to be as faithful as I can to his time. Mention of death, mutilation, self harm and a minor depiction of a fight. Psychologically troubled young children ahead! Author’s note: I am a nerd for a good Victorian novel and a sexy Alienist.I have always been charmed by Laszlo’s mind and inner conflicts. So I took the chance and tried to have a run into that rollercoaster.  The story is placed between season 1 and season 2.

I can prevent them the torment, the anguish, the recollection at night of those monsters. I feel like a poet would be a better alienist than a philosopher, but I have got no poetry nor philosophy in my veins, but the cold experience of the razor blade judgment of Life itself.

Today I observed a fight among the children at the Institute. Age range between 10 and 12. Boys. The fight was over the possession of a side of the playground, the territory of a pack  of youngsters formed under the name of Steven. Peculiar lad, coming from a military background finds comfort in replicating the schemes he lived in his family. He takes the role of the Father/Captain of the team and subjects children that come from a similar background story, but do not posses his same attitude to the command. All quiet on the front, until the space he declared is own spot got affected by the presence of others.  Intruders. I knowingly let the events unfold to see how Steven would react to his challenged authority. His reaction was, at first, worded, a sketch, a stage-play of an action he witnessed over and over, and he knew the part so well that some of the contending kids lowered their stance against him. Among considering to mildly intervene into this pyramid scheme of authority, another boy, Jan, calls himself on the role of the educator and hero of the masses and proceeds to unfold a wild and well assessed punch on the newly declared dictator face. Balance is established again. No need for me to arbitrate, once more the laws of nature seem to apply to children as in a state of nature.

Meet John Moore over lunch. His job at the newspaper is picking up, he is charmed by the spirits and the wits that he finds in his shared office with all the other writers. He mentions many, goes on and on over qualities and troubles, gossips and tendencies, and even little scandals here and there. To be aware of all those details gives me no interest, but to see a dear friend so invested clearly gives me something to pick up. To consider also the amount of details and the way he describes this or that member of the journal, I can do a small exercise of analysis. It is almost too easy because John is painfully genuine, even some of the kids at the institute would beat him hands down in a battle of lies. The more he likes somebody, the more he goes on about all the details and the characteristics, often letting aside the physical appearance. When he doesn’t like somebody he has a couple of adjectives for the wits and around four or five for the physical aspects that usually indulge on some repulsive idiosyncrasies.  John is a man that painfully fits in the storyline of The Picture of Dorian Gray: to him physical beauty is spiritual beauty and, of course, the other way around. This part of him surely intrigues me, makes me want to tease more from him. But, as a friend, it concerns me as John is way too prone to purposelessly decide that somebody with good eyes is also a good human being, which is a very romantic and admirably naive way of judging matters. I noticed some names that keep repeating in his narration. I dread that it is synonymous of a soon encounter from my side with the objects of his admiration. Note on the show: the first movement lacked the pathos needed to begin with, I am not sure that the guest orchestra really managed to portray the wider emotional ground needed to withstand the whole representation. As the evening progressed there were some outstanding performances by the cellists. Still not approving the choice of reprising the early quick finale movement against the lengthy set of variations and fugue that we are used to in presence of the Eroica. Underwhelming the performance of the horn and oboe, vital in the comprehension of the genius of Beethoven. 

Niki is a new addition of the Institute, quite old for the standards. He is already 16, he will leave when summer ends to some expensive college his family meant him to stay. His parents expect me to make him “normal” in the time we are allowed together.  He is Austrian and I let him act it out like I don’t understand German for the first week of hist stay until today. I believe I hit his pride, which is good, in the moment I answered back to one of his sneaky comments. Now he knows. He is not safe from me, he doesn’t like it. The young man has a tendency to danger, risky tasks and edgy situations. In his mother’s own words “Niki is not afraid of anything”. The phrase didn’t raise any excitement in the father, rather some sort of painful acceptance that is role as the alpha male of the house is probably not only being challenged, but  already diminished, if not abolished. I have taken in consideration that Niki will break himself a bone or two in the process of the therapy, probably out of the spite of boredom or rebellion. It took him less than few days to turn himself into an outcast among the outcasts, which only drives me closer to analyse the complexity of his narcissistic wall of self defence. I gave him a physical challenge to lift a certain weight, he is a pretty skinny one, he didn’t like the challenge, but I am sure he will take it. He is a brainy guy, he hates to be questioned on unfamiliar ground. He won’t sleep at night thinking about it.  A challenge, in this first phase, can only bring me closer to the ease of his pains. To continue the observation.

It is a sad privilege of medicine, in particular the one I practice, to be able to witness the weaknesses of the human nature and the reverse side of life. Nevertheless, I oblige this same privilege of the study as life moves into shades of darkness. To be aware of it gives more solace to my soul than to be victim of patiently waiting for the inevitable unfolding of the events. To be able to understand more about psychology would bring more comfort and elevation to any human being, the times might not be there yet, but eventually something will move into the direction of a more wholesome approach.

Dinner meeting with Sara Howard, at the restaurant Jardin Des Cygnes, 7 pm sharp.  Do not expect to reach the dessert. Do not know if John will be participating due to undeniable tension among the two and the fatal despise of John over French cuisine.

The case that Sara unfolded tonight to my ears feels more and more like pulled out from some gothic book or from the mind of a Roman historian that needed to justify the godly origins of an Emperor. One killing, apparently random, a very constructed iconography over the body. Signs and insults, shapes and drawings. Is this a work of art? Does the killer wants his victim to be his Mona Lisa? His David? I am charmed and destabilised. If this was a murder like any other, then why to spend so much time into it? Based on the description the act of killing itself was quick: a sharp cut over the throat, almost like not wanting to ruin too much the surface to use as base for, what? I keep rerunning those symbols over and over as Sara described them to me, my mind is flooded with the designs of greek philosophers that needed to explain themselves why the sky is above our head and never collapses on us. Hilarious how, no matter the science advancement, in the mind of many the sky stands inevitably overt their shoulders, suffocates them, brings them to a death of the soul and not of the body. Is all this graphic charade indeed only a form to scream for attention?  To stress the eyes of an unaware viewer? It seems ridiculously elaborate, a scream for attention would be quick, it would be like guided by instinct, not reasoning, craftwork. Any man with a knife can paint in blood red the walls of a room and that’s asking for attention. That is the primal howl: look at me! I am here! But this one.  I don’t know yet.

Spent the early morning reading anew my copy of The Metamorphosis by Ovid. Didn’t touch it in a long time and I got bedazzled by the world of terrible sensuality, anger and selfishness of those gods and mortals. I think back at all the deviances and weaknesses of human kind and I try to relate it to all of those humanoid figures. Niki would be a minotaur, the lonesome son left in the labyrinth and his strive for success is his bull’s head. Or maybe a centaur, because of his wits and strategic thinking. I might keep up the process, maybe this is the way to understand my patients better, to understand the killer better. Must remember not to romanticise it. Greek gods were probably the first form of self indulging of a society that needed gods to be forgiving and allowing favours and punishments, but only in exchange of sacrifices. But the sacrifice never comes from the God’s will, but from the will of the man that perpetuates the act of killing. To sacrifice someone or something is the sadistic response to a lack of love deeply inherited in human mind that becomes neurotic. Is the killer giving the God of his own neurosis a body to feast upon? 

I talked with Jan this morning. The young boy is about 10, but he acts like a full grown adult. I could easily asses that’s the reason why he could challenge Steven in that fight. Two children mimicking adults situations they know too well. Jan is son of an industrial man, but he is also son of the dialectics of the industrial revolution. He sounds like he swallowed some of those books about working class rights and communism, probably pushed by a resentful surrounding (mother?uncle? the midwife?) over the social role of his father. As much as incredibly smart and lectured, Jan lost most of his early occasions in life by spending a considerable amount of time using his fists. The anger ever present in the young boy always surprises me, he seems to be holding a power, a strength of a full grown man in those tiny arms. Nevertheless, he is already the tallest of the group. He is surely an idealist, which makes him also tragically fragile. His strength mixed with his heart of gold can make him the best of the heroes or the worst of the villains. He apologised for the fight, he specified how he didn’t like the sound of Steven’s voice, more than the sound, the level of pitch.  I can’t stand somebody shouting orders, I just don’t listen anymore. He is so mature even about his own feelings, almost a gentleman in his chivalry toward the weaker children, honest with his open heart and resentful against any form of injustice.  I am not spared by his ways, he would come at me whenever he feels like I was being partial over some of the kids, his sense of justice blinds him and transform a perfectly balanced boy into a ranging animal.

Ordered book, to be delivered around tomorrow evening: Introduction à la méthode de Léonard de Vinci by Paul Valéry. Suddenly feeling myself as a gross ignorant in art themes. I always regarded myself aware of the artistic personalities and tendencies of present and past, but this new amount of perceptions over the human figure and the human body leads me to document myself more. I could ask John for advice, but he wouldn’t take things at matter that seriously. I can almost hear him say how I can make gruesome a pleasant topic such as art. I should probably wait to see the body to push any further aesthetic study, but I find myself not being able to stop. I reckon, I can allow myself a vice or two.

Today I saw the body of the killed man, courtesy of the Isaacson's. To be fair, I had underestimated it. In Sara’s descriptions, probably due to her more analytic mind, all the charm of the representation got lost in favour of a less cryptic and reasonable understanding of the act. Sara got what some alienists will call a masculine mind, which I don’t perfectly agree on. If I apply that same approach John would be a very feminine mind, all wrapped up in romanticising even the ugliest. I guess that dividing the world in “fragile and gentle” and “strong and powerful” is just easier to explain the fluctuation of something that doesn’t need a real name or a category like human inclinations on thoughts.  I got a feverish sense of patience by looking at the body. Each symbol traced with sapient slowness, dense of the time that the killer spent with the body. That is a work of hours, he had time and meaning. He had resources and was able to spend not less than the time he needed to reach, a vision? An ideal? A message? Is it the message meant to be understood? Am I supposed to unravel it or it is maybe just the way the killer communicates within himself? And if I do decifrate the code, will that bring me closer to him? Or to his next victim?

Reminder: ask John to replicate all the symbols on the bodies in the correct measure and order. It might be needed some hard convincing. Addition: scheduled meeting, his house, 3 pm.

It wasn’t a day like any other when I met you. Or maybe it was, and that’s why I got so struck by it and now I am here playing it over and over through what my memory clung on so desperately. Thank you for answering my question. Regarding your reference to the Sapir Whorf hypothesis: Do you subscribe to the idea that learning a foreign language, whatever that language may be, gives one a unique insight into how the L1 speakers of that language think and view the world? I feel somewhat uneasy agreeing with that. As in: Of course learning any language implies studying and learning about its original people's cultural norms, history and values, but isn't that something that can also be done independently from language learning? What I'm trying to say is, I think the simple action of learning vocabulary, syntax, morphology and other rules of a language doesn't really help us see through the eyes of the people who speak it natively, and the parts of language learning that do help us do that, can also be done without learning the language (I.E. we can learn about the cultural referents and norms of the french or the chinese without actually studying french or mandarin or cantonese etc). Regarding "Authenticity" and Prescriptivism: My thoughts regarding the role of language preservation actually stem from an opposition to the notion of authenticity: Isn't the notion that a people would/should learn a language to be able to better understand the viewpoints of their elders and ancestors something of a quest for "Authenticity"? Coming from a position of skepticism towards linguistic relativity, what i can't help but see in language restoration efforts is the pursuit of authenticity in the name of tradition, as in "A proper X-ese person should speak the X-ese language, because that's what their predecessors did". I of course agree with the idea that people who don't live personally can only go so far as make hypotheses, but the reason for my doubts is that I see those parts of language preservation i'm skeptical of as something of a pidgeonholing mentality, an act of making people perform a time-consuming ritual of learning how to rapidly access vocabulary, syntax structures and schemata from their minds as sort of a performance of "proper belonging" to a people they already belong to. Sorry for burdening you with this big long answer, you don't need my permission but feel free to ignore it

I do believe languages give unique insights into their native speakers. There is a "weak" version of the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis that language influences -- and is influenced by—a variety of both overt and covert biases enacted by the population of speakers. This 'linguistic relativism' has a great deal of evidence and is, as far as I have read, accepted by every linguist. This weak version opposes the "strong" version of the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, linguistic determinism, where language DETERMINES thoughts/biases. Whorf's own evidence for this, shortly, kind of sucked.

But Whorf does have a point in that a language is in some ways its own experience. There is a distinctive quality to embodying that old perspective through speaking and hearing the heritage language, different from simply learning the facets of that perspective and the cultural-historical context it appear[s/ed] in. One can know a certain person founded an ethnic group, or that past people performed a specific ritual certain way at a certain time due to certain concerns, or even how to perform that ritual. This is different from participating in language. By speaking and listening one must interact with those views in mind, and one only gains this knowledge through performance. Participating in tradition is the goal here, rather than knowing of tradition.

Whether experiential and factual knowledge are equally valuable is an old and never-will-be-settled debate. But I do think language revitalization projects help participants see through the eyes of people who speak/spoke it by re-enacting (even reifying) the mode through which those biases are conveyed. I think the factual aspect of learning is a major facet of achieving a wholesome understanding of any worldview, but I'm trying to deny your claim and emphasize the fact that language is inexorable from that understanding.

I think it is both pigeonholing and reductive to group all revitalization projects as "getting proper X-ese people to speak proper X-ese, because that's what their predecessors did". Let's get an example, The Cherokee Revitalization Project:

"The results of the 2002 research survey funded by the United States Department of Health & Human Services Administration for Native Americans [found while] in 2000 there were an estimated 10,000 speakers of the Cherokee language in the state of Oklahoma, by 2002 the survey found no fluent speakers under the age of 40. Based on research of endangered languages, the Cherokee Nation estimated that the language would die out in one to two generations. The survey found, as one possible cause, that many elders resist speaking to their children and grandchildren in Cherokee in the belief that it will help them avoid the negative experiences of their own generation. Based on the results of the study, Principle Chief Smith declared a state of emergency and preservation of the Cherokee language became a top priority for the Cherokee Nation. Organizing a task force comprised of elders, educators and concerned citizens, the Cherokee Nation Language Department formulated a comprehensive language plan to preserve, protect and promote the Cherokee language."

Here we see a language on the verge of death that has "proper" speakers capable of teaching the language in what I imagine would be an "authentic" way. The implicit argument for language revitalization here is that the language deserves to live and the people most connected to it want it to continue to live. It is a different perspective from "an act of making people perform a time-consuming ritual [...] as sort of a performance of 'proper belonging' to a people they already belong to." Which, if true anyway, what's the problem with affirming ones identity of belonging with a "time-consuming ritual"? Is it because the idea that governs what counts as a ritual of affirming a given identity—tradition, perhaps—is in some way unethical?

I think your skepticism about "language restoration efforts [in the name of tradition]" is skepticism about tradition as a whole. That's why I said you're more concerned with "how we as humans relate ourselves to the past". But to be honest I'm also not exactly sure of your wording since you said you are "coming from a position of skepticism towards linguistic relativity" and then say this supposed enforcement of authenticity is a pidgeon-holing mentality, so I'm just going to assume you mean you ARE a proponent of such relativity (against which the truth claims of authenticity is opposed). I can't really converse confidently about whether tradition is, at large, a concept we as humans should have, and what to do about that if we shouldn't. I read a paper for this ask (here) about the question of authenticity in anthropology and its an entertaining and thoughtful read. It relates the concept of authenticity to whether there is a subjective or objective truth, or something in the middle, the relation which makes sense: Authenticity is the deciding the "realness" of a given idea or practice and culture is to some degree the enforcement and reinforcement of that authenticity. To me this authenticity or realness is obviously culturally relative and thus the meaning or realness of a given authenticity can't be decided by someone outside that experience.

But returning to the main topic, learning the rules and parts of a language is, again, equivalent to learning facts. That's not what language revitalization is here for, and not what the participants and organizers want. They want to experience the language firsthand as it is performed and to mingle with that world of experience. This cannot be done simply with learning historical facts and theoretical processes. How they are allowed to prune the tree of authentic experience I don't really have the authority to comment on.

For the anon talking about how they hate how over exaggerated a character is. I am not trying to start hate or anything, but if you don't like the way how someone portrays the character, just stop reading it. Some people don't delve deep, they just want to write fanfics for fun they're not going to make sure it's 100% the characters VERY complex personalities. Or the way how they view a character is different from their beliefs. I've gotten this message before and I am TIRED of it

I think it's a good time to talk about this because I've been thinking about bringing the topic up for a while. To begin with, let's clear something between the two anons because I think it's a misunderstanding:

Anon A is saying that they're sometimes bothered by how some fanfics and Aus have a different way of picturing character X, in other words, they don't really enjoy it when a character is bring mischaracterized

Anon B (this anon) is saying that if you're bothered by a fic because you don't like how they're characterizing an specific character, then you don't have to read it.

Let me say that both of these anons are right, yet to think that their ideas are the opposites of each other, is totally wrong. In other words they both have a point, but I guess their points needs a stronger a better way of being explained in order to avoid any further dramas and misunderstandings.

Why am I doing this? Because I've seen -enough- of it. After the twst character analyses, aruges toward the mischaracterizations in this fandom became a thing, it's been causing some issues and arguments between the fans and it's mainly because of how sides fails to explain their points clearly.

Though I didn't really receive any rude asks/comments regarding myself the matter I can still how some fans feel attacked, offended or called out by character analysis posts or have the NERVE to attack or offend others with their own perspective on characters and try to force others into accepting them.

Enough with drama, I'm sick of it. I'm going to explain this as clearly as I can, hopeful that this would at least lessen the chance of having to go through another drama regarding the mischaracterization issue.

1) The concept of FANfiction

First off, the fanfiction itself; what is a fanfiction? What type of writing is considered to be a fanfic? What is it even used for? These are the questions we all need to answer before getting to know the world of fanfic.

Just as its name explains, it's fan + fiction. It's the result of the fan's creativity and imagination taking place in a fictional plot, something that hasn't happened with the original characters and he original story. The fans' imagination is often far beyond the plot which the original story/series/book offers, yet this isn't going to hold fans back from imagining it. Fanfiction is the way of giving yourself (or others) the specific and plot with the original and canon version isn't going to give you, in other words it's a way of getting what you wish to see through a story but this time, it's you who'd decide what will happen.

You are the one who decides how characters will be, you are the one who decides how and where this story happens and you are the one to choose how this story must come to an end. It's all about your own imagination and creativity, which enables you to have power over everything about your own story and fanfiction, everything (In expection gor than legal issues including claiming the original character as yours). You have the power, and you choose how it should be.

2) Fanfiction and mischaracterization

This was mainly the most brought up issue in the recent Twst drama, mischaracterization through writings. Many were saying how they find this annoying and nerve-wrecking, but no one really talked about how mischaracterization comes to life.

Let me tell you, as long your writing is a fanfic, there is a 70% chance of mischaracterizing the plot or the characters and there's nothing wrong with it, that's just how fanfiction works! It isn't supposed to be canon, it is fanon and only fanon. Everything that happens is fictional and fanon based, in other words, it's the fan who decides what should happen in a fanfiction and how it's supposed to be!

One of the Fanfiction's best purposes is giving the fandom a chance to mischaracterize! To write the characters the way they wish them to be and not necessarily the way they truly are. Fanfiction allows us to imagine and create something that isn't true, so let me clear my point here: It's totally okay to change the characters' personalities in your fanfics! As the writer, you have the right to do so, and since writing a fanfic must be for your own pleasure in the first place, no one can stop you from imagining whatever you want! No one can jump out and say stuff like "YOU CAN'T MISCHARACERTIZE A CHARACTER IN A FANFICTION" because that'd be super lame. It's your own fanfiction, your story, your creation and you're free to mischaracterize if that's how you like it to be! And if anyone doesn't like that, remember that they don't have to read that.

3)What is the problem?

Look, we've been going through some drama because of the recent character analyses of twst fandom, and I'd like to explain why. First off, note that I think both sides of the argument have been wrong and I'm going to talk about both of them.

Let me begin with a small example: It's been argued that based to what we've seen from Leona's personality so far, he doesn't seem to be the type to love healthily or even easily fall for anyone. Some of the fans seemed to be offended by the statement and said that "They still want their Leona fluff no matter what everyone else says" okay okay, this is the problem I was talking about: Saying that canon Leona doesn't seem to be much of a fluffy lion or a sweet lover isn't equal to forbidding the fans from writing fluffs for him or picturing him as a adorable and gentle lover! No one has the right to hold fans back from appreciating and enjoying what they like! But it's important to know what exactly is happening.

I'll talk about some crucial points you need to know about character analyses and how it's different from a fanfic in part (4), but before that, let me continue to give some examples of the recent argues and how each of the sides were wrong.

A) You enjoy reading fluffy Malleus content but character analyses have been saying that he isn't as soft and cute as you'd expected him to be. Does this mean that you can no longer ask for wholesome Malleus content or enjoy reading them? -> Of course not! You're still free to read/imagine/write whatever you like with Malleus! No one has the right to tell you what to do, and character analyses aren't meant to be a way to hold you back from enjoying what you like! If you're enjoying something, go for it! In this fanon world no one can accuse you for not following the canon interpretations!

B) You've spent a rather long time getting to know Ace and his canon personality, and you really like the way he is! But by reading fanfics/ fandom's interpretations on him you can't help but to feel like they aren't giving his personality the justice he deserves, and aren't seeing the great and amazing character he truly is. Is it okay to feel upset about this? -> Just as I said, it's totally fine to have your personal interpretations of a character no matter how different the rest of the interpretations are! But the real question is: what should you do when you think fandom isn't doing a character justice? This would be answered in part D!

C) You are enjoying your personal ideas and headcanons with Idia and many are saying that your way of picturing him is so adorable! Does this necessarily mean that the canon Idia as well is like you describe him? -> Absolutely not! No matter how adorable an Au/headcanon is, everyone's free to enjoy it but you should remember that canon ≠ fanon. You are totally free to imagine whatever you'd like! But keep this in mind that you shouldn't insist on your ideas being necessarily canon!

D) You feel like many are mischaracterizing your favorite character and you don't like it, what should you do? -> Well to begin with, remember that other fans have the right to characterize a character just as much as you do! You can't stop them from doing what they like or expect them to change the way they are because of how different the canon interpretation of a character might be. But you as well have a great chance to inspire the fandom by your own ideas! You can try to discuss how different the canon personality of your favorite character is and even try to turn that into a character analysis! This way you'd not only avoid causing any drama because of disagreeing with someone's way of picturing your favorite character, but you will also have a chance to present your personal ideas and characterizations to the fandom in a friendly and polite way!

E) You don't like how an author is characterizing some of the boys, what should you do? -> Easy solution, don't read it. Let me tell you, I have gone through this a lot and do you know what I do whenever I read/see something that doesn't match my tastes and expectations? I keep scrolling! That's all, I don't have to like it, but I don't have to read it either! 😀

F) You're an author and a writing request is asking you to write for a character in a way you just can't or don't want to write because that goes totally against your idealistics and ideas on a character, for example: You just can't write something really wholesome and fluffy for Leona because you can't imagine him being like that, what should you do? -> It's obvious, then don't write it! You have the right to choose what you'd like to write and how you like to picture a character no matter what others think. If you want to picture Leona as an emotional and soft boy, it's totally okay! If you want to picture him as a cold-hearted and mean prince, again it's totally alright! Remember, just like fans you have the right to picture and characterize the characters the way you want to, and no one can tell you otherwise!

G) You've read a character analysis and you realize that you've been mischaracterizing Floyd for a while, should you feel bad or sorry about it? -> Of course not!! Even if you were mischaracterizing him, keep this mind that there's nothing wrong with picturing Floyd as the way you want him to be! As long as you don't claim your headcanons to be canon and share stuff like "Canon from is definitely like this" or "Floyd would do that, canon! ^-^" it's totally alright to imagine him the way you like!

H) You saw someone saying something about Malleus that didn't match the canon interpretations of him. You quickly replied to then and corrected them about their wrong point of view and tell them how the real Malleus is, which kinda led to and argument between you and the person, did you do the right thing? -> Absolutely not! Attacking others out of nowhere and without any context isn't the right way of introducing the canon characterizations to the fandom! Even if you were right, keep this in mind that the other person has the right to picture Malleus or any other character the way they want them to be so if you want to correct them or try to get to know the canon character interpretations, you should do that from the logical and polite way.

I) Someone wrote a character analysis for Idia and said how they find it so annoying when people who refer to Idia as "Baby" and "uwu beanie". You often refer to Idia as baby or cutie yourself and the context of that analysis/general post some how got to you. You feel lowkey attacked and offended, did the original poster say the right thing? -> No, matter what the context is or how accurate and well-written that analysis was, directly calling people who have a certain way of picturing a character "Annoying" is rude no matter how you think of it. Even if the original poster were right about Idia not being UWU, their way of wording their sentence wasn't really pleasant; keep this, in mind that everyone in the fandom is free to picture Idia as they like and it doesn't even matter if you don't like it or not! If you're going to write an analysis/essay regarding a character's personality, remember that you should prove your point and disagree with opposite opinions through logical reasoning and explaining your point, NOT by offending and attacking other ideas by savage contexts like "You have to stop saying that Idia is like this", "I hate it when people say Idia is like this", " It's so annoying to see people saying Idia is like this... "

4) What's with the character analyses then?

There's a difference from the canon and fanon interpretations of a character, this is a truth which cannot be denied. But it's important to remember that just because a canon interpretation of a character exists, you can no longer enjoy the fanon interpretations!

Even I, for example, enjoy picturing someone like Malleus as an purely evil being like Maleficent herself because I enjoy seeing him as a perfect figure for "Mister of all Evil", but in my Malleus analysis post I explained how we should NOT think that Malleus is nothing but pure evil or a heartless monster! See, this is the difference I've been talking about. I'm pretty well-familiar with the canon Malleus, but I'm also enjoying the my own fanon Malleus and I know that the Evil Malleus I admire is a fanon one, not the canon one!

The thing is, character analyses aren't meant to be a way to hold anyone back from enjoying their fanon interpretations or imagining what they like, they aren't call out posts either. They are simply a way of getting to know the characters as if you're getting to know one of your irl friends. You come to think of them, see how deep their personalities are and get to learn more about them!

It's true that reading a character analysis might make you realize that you've been somehow mischaracterizing a character but this, isn't anything to be sorry or frustrated about! Character analyses are written to learn us more about our favorite characters, or as I like to name it, they want to show us that they're a lot more that we may imagine them to be!

Now, you may wonder how can we write a good character analysis without getting out of the line, offending anyone or giving out any cheap information?

I, personally, am pretty strict when asked to do a character analysis. Doesn't matter if I like the character or not, I'd try to judge them nonetheless. You HAVE to talk about both good features and bad features, and you must strictly avoid your analysis from getting personal; you have to make sure that your personal thoughts, feelings and emotions regarding a character aren't effecting your analysis. You shouldn't be writing it in a way to show off with your analytical ideas either.

Some people think coming off as rude would make them sound valid and acceptable, or they might just be used to being a little offensive in general, but as I explained in part 3-I, I won't recommend using any harsh or mean languages at all. Let me note that your way of wording your ideas is crazily important and if you're not careful enough with what you say and how you describe your ideas, your post would be not only be not much helpful as an analysis but also a cause of more drama and arguments. Also, keep this in mind that even the best of character analyses can't totally catch the characters' personalities correctly because we do not own them! Twisted wonderland's characters are a property of aniplex and neither me not anyone else in this fandom has the right to claim what a character is 100% like unless Disney officially releases those details!

Writing character analyses can be hard, from finding enough of hints to defend your point to choosing the right Grammer and way of speaking to avoid any further misunderstandings. But remember, those who write character analyses have no right to attack anyone because of them (They can oppose to different opinions of course, opposing ≠ attacking ), but keep this in mind that readers have no right to attack then because of their analysis either! See, that's a two-sided relationship. Both of the, sides have to learn to respect, both of the sides should, know, their boundaries and both of the sides have to be respectful!

Warning: When I say you're free to do or imagine whatever you wish to do, know that posting and sharing writings too has its own rules. Make sure to put the proper warnings, and avoid using any taboo or clearly impolite and sometimes, illegal concepts such as incest, pedophilia, etc.

I actually had a lot more I wanted to say regarding the matter but I'm keeping it short, because I know that writing too much would make this boring and pretty hard to read. Hope that it's clear enough and avoid the possible future misunderstandings and arguments regarding the matter. Please, this isn't even about twst, it's about learning to respect each other it's about real life. Having people read THIS is a lot more important than having them read my character analyses or writings.
