In Conversation With - AL: A musical maestro!
Tumblr media
Meet AL, a musical maestro who first arrived on the music scene in Croydon before deciding to take on an even bigger one in the Capital, otherwise known as London. He has been making drumming, songwriting, and helping to create music for others for over a decade now and hasn't slowed down yet. During the Covid pandemic, his ethic may have had to adapt but his drive remained the same. AL has worked with several musicians and singers and will be releasing his latest single, 1998, which is coming out on the 10th of January 2023. Check him out "I began in bands and have always been in bands up until I released my first solo EP this year" Your interest in music happened way before you were a teenager, just what was it about music that got your attention at such an early age? My first memory of music was when we used to visit my gran in Scotland when I was a kid. She was an amazing pianist and I used to sit listening to her play classical music. Then my mum bought me a drum kit aged 10 and that was it! As soon as I hit those skins for the first time, I knew music was the way forward. When it comes to artists in music there's those who just sing and those who solely play instruments. Have you ever been tempted to go behind the mic? Absolutely! We all want to have a crowd in the palm of our hand and have the stage presence of a Freddie Mercury don't we? I'm used to hiding behind a drum kit or a guitar, but these next bunch of songs I'm currently writing for the next album, I'm on vocals too, so I'm hoping to get behind the mic live next year. You've drummed for a lot of bands, what were the bands themselves like to be around? I've always loved being in bands, especially when you're starting out as a gang with big dreams. Feeding off other musicians especially bass players as the rhythm section has always been fun and inspiring. And were there any moments of egotism? No, not really, I've played with confident musicians, amazing musicians who knew they were good, but I think you need that little bit of confidence, especially to get up on stage and do your thing. After one of my tunes was played on the radio for the first time, the first thing my missus said was 'you're still putting the bins out Friday morning Buchanan'… I put them out with a bit of swagger that Friday... but still put them out! Whilst honing your skills you began teaching music as well. Because you already had insider knowledge, as it were, did that prove useful to other students if they asked you for advice about pursuing it as a living? Sure! I keep in touch with some of them and they have gone on to play in bands too. I'm always around for advice and it's good to see them do well. So how did things actually happen for you, did you begin as part of a band or have you always been solo? I began in bands and have always been in bands up until I released my first solo EP this year. I was enjoying writing and recording at the start of 2022 by myself, then turned those sessions into songs. Although I have different artists guesting on it, so I`ve still enjoyed throwing ideas around with others. You've played in several bands over the years. How much of a process was it to adapt to being with other musicians as you've all got to be on pretty much the same wavelength for music to work? Wellbeing a drummer, my first job is to connect with the bass player, make sure that the rhythm section is tight and my kick drum is bang on with him or her. Then every band is different, sometimes you write as a band, sometimes a member will have the main structure and you write around it. With Elaine Palmer who I drummed for, it's her songs, she's an incredible songwriter so it was just a case of writing the drum lines. So had you already known some of the other musicians already? The bands when I was younger were school, college, and uni friends mainly, I met Elaine through her husband Jake who I'm mates with. Now you're from Croydon, what's the music scene like down there, and what artists did you see growing up? Well it’s been a while since I was down there, but Croydon is a stone’s throw away from central London, so when I lived there, I used to travel in as a teenager and see bands at the Astoria and Brixton Academy like Motorhead, Carter USM, Pop Will Eat Itself, No FX and loads more. The indie and punk scene was banging back then! To anyone considering taking a break there which nightspots would you recommend? Oh I`m not sure these days, I've been an honorary northerner for too long now to know! You've made a few EP'S already; Bringing Me Back to Life, Only Positive Energy, and Don't Eat The Daisies. Explain the process of putting them together Well Bringing Me Back To Life was the EP I released this summer, they were musical ideas I had floating around for a while that I decided to put down and record, I was getting a huge buzz from what I was doing, so recorded all the music myself in my home studio and then reached out to a few different artists to sing and rap on it. That's when I got in touch with Leo Valentine who sang on the title song of the EP and also the last 2 singles I released: Only Positive Energy and Don't Eat The Daisies. As with numerous other musicians and artists, their life influences their music from writing to producing the sounds. Are you the same? Absolutely, I started writing Bringing Me Back To Life after I lost my parents a previous couple of years, it had a huge bearing on that song, and also Be Patient Now which was the first single from it. What has happened in your life, and your mood at the time of writing, all have a bearing on the style of music that comes out. Sometimes I feel like I have little control over what music comes out as strange as it sounds... It just flows out as it wants to. Just thought I'd mention that you've worked with two known artists, Elaine Palmer and Leo Valentine. Describe working with them Elaine is a huge talent, she is a solo artist, so as I said working with her really entailed writing the drum lines for the album I recorded with her and making sure they fitted perfectly with her music. Leo is a female up-and-coming singer from the US. I work remotely with her as I'm here in the UK, but we send ideas back and forth and write that way, then get together online as well to write that way too. So was it easier to bounce ideas off each other? With Leo, I find it very easy to write music to that voice for sure! Working remotely has its challenges but it works well. I do have to keep reminding her that when I say something she does is 'wicked' that means good though! American language barrier! At the moment you're working on a new album, tell us more about it including how it came together I am! I've got a little way to go with it yet, but this is a solo record with me on all the instruments and singing too. Plenty of epic guitar, ambiance, and some funk threw in. I just want to keep writing and this is the natural next step, the first single is called '1998' and will be released early next year with the album to follow. You've also got guest artists featured on it, was it an easy process to get them on board? As it stands it`s a solo record but Leo Valentine may make a cheeky appearance or 2 on it as well. Looking back at how things have gone so far do you reflect on things much? I'm more of a look-forward kind of person, always learning from the past, but preparing for the future! In regards to your work would you say you're similar to Calvin Harris and Disclosure e.g.: produce/write music for others, guest feature on musical collaborations? I would always be open to collaborations in The future and writing for others, but just now my sole focus is getting this new album finished and getting out and playing it live for people. As we go into 2023 what can we expect from you? New single `1998` in January, album to follow, live shows, and world domination of course... And finally, where can people find your music? You can listen to all my music and follow me on Spotify, I am Al Buchanan on there: https://open.spotify.com/artist/2m0PsuuAnc296lQX1ftz7x All my music is available on all online music stores as well: Amazon, iTunes, YouTube, etc You can follow me and get updates on Instagram: @albuchananmusic And Facebook: Al Buchanan Music Read the full article

A list of some of my favorite musicians and why
I’m bored right now, so listing, in no particular order, some of my favorite musicians over the years and have stuck with me for my life so far.
Music has always been an integral part of my life and I love it so so much. Just hearing the perfect song or finding that album that speaks to you is amazing.
So, yeah, here are some musicians that I love love LOVE! No surprises in here for people that know me.
The Beatles
Tumblr media
I grew up with this band! My mom adored them and now I adore them. I’m more partial to early Beatles, but they made great music all across their years as a band. Favorite Beatle? I don’t think I can choose. They’re all perfect in their own way. The first rock band. The first boy band. The first musical obsession of my life. Thank you, Beatles, for everything you have given me.
Kurt Cobain (Nirvana)
Tumblr media
I fell in love with Kurt and Nirvana in college after my mom’s death and never fell out of love with him or the band. They’re my go to band when I’m feeling sad or angry emotions and need to just let it out. I found Kurt’s story amazing and believe he is a songwriting genius. Unplugged will always remain my favorite Nirvana album and live performance.
Jack White
Tumblr media
Jack White is one strange man! But I believe that is why I really love him and his music. He makes great straight-up rock music and I love him in whatever form he chooses to express himself: White Stripes, solo, Raconteurs, all of it is fantastic. I fell in love with his music in college after my sister introduced me to his music and, again, never fell out of love. His guitar-playing skills are legendary and he has a great voice to boot!
Amy Winehouse
Tumblr media
Amy Winehouse was another college mainstay that I’m still in love with all these years later. I listened to both her albums numerous times and watched the film Amy, which was so sad and enlightening. I wish we all could have seen her growth as an artist and see her become even more of a legendary performer. Her jazz-infused pop was a breath of fresh air and she’ll always remain a favorite of mine.
Taylor Swift
Tumblr media
I had to include Taylor on this list! Been a fan of hers since Fearless but didn’t become a bigger fan until 1989, when I was hooked and never looked back. She doesn’t have a bad album to her name, and seeing reputation live was simply the icing on the cake. Her music and lyricism is perfect and on point and I’m so happy I became a fan of this legendary artist. She’s one of my all-time favorites and I will always love her and her music. Cannot wait to see what she does next.
Jeff Buckley
Tumblr media
I found Jeff Buckley’s music a year after I graduated from college totally by accident and so happy I stumbled on his work. Grace is one of the most perfect albums I’ve ever heard and I wish we could have seen his growth as an artist. I’m sad we will never see more from this songwriting genius who was so empathetic and so real. One of my all-time favorites who has stuck with me for life. I simply adore Jeff Buckley.
David Bowie
Tumblr media
My mom also adored Bowie and passed that adoration down to me. I remember his death hit real bad when it happened and the whole world was in mourning. And for good reason too. He was just a musician who was so full of life and was so so talented. He deserved everything he got in life. I’m still rocking out to his songs now and will never grow tired of this man’s legacy. Thanks, Bowie, for the good times.
Elvis Presley
Tumblr media
I fell in love with Elvis in eighth grade and never looked back! Once I found out I shared a birthday with him, that’s it: I was hooked. And I’m still in love with his persona and music now. The ultimate rock star. He just shed cool. And was a marvel of an entertainer, from musician to rock star to movie star, he did it all. And he was able to move deftly between so many genres too. Really, I love Elvis, and I’m not ashamed.
Harry Styles
Tumblr media
Harry is a new love of mine, but I had to include him. I must admit I’ve never been a One Direction fan and even after discovering Harry and listening to them, I don’t think I’ll ever be one. (Sorry, guys.) But Harry’s solo music is a breath of fresh air in this kind of boring music industry now. He’s controversial and fun and his music is phenomenal. Fine Line is one of the best albums I’ve heard in years, and I’ll be singing “Lights Up” and “Adore You” until the day I die. Although Harry is a new love of mine, I believe I’m gonna love him and his music for years to come. Cannot wait to see him live and see what new great music he has in store for us. Really, I’m unabashedly in love with the guy and I have no regrets.
Honorable Mentions:
For those who I outgrew or haven’t made my all time favorites list.
Billie Joe Armstrong (Green Day)
Tumblr media
Including him as an honorable mention. I used to be in love with Billie years ago as a kid and a young adult, but I kind of outgrew his music. Sorry not sorry, I have so many great memories with him and the band, but I just can’t really listen to them anymore. I guess I grew out of them. Still, though, it was fun while it lasted. I just feel like Green Day aren’t really trying anymore as a band and because of that I’ve lost interest in them. Again, sorry not sorry.
Beyoncé
Tumblr media
Okay let me get one thing straight: I love Beyoncé, her image and her music. But she isn’t in my all time favorites, even with these loves. I think she’s great and extremely talented but I have to be in the right mood to listen to her. Which is why I’m adding her to the honorable mentions. Don’t get me wrong. I love so many of her songs and albums. But...well, I just really have to be in the mood for her music. Still, though, she reigns.
Led Zeppelin
Tumblr media
Same thing with Zep. My dad adores this band and it’s one of his favorites. But I can’t force it. I have to be in the mood for them. They’re fantastic, I won’t argue against that. But they’re also heavier than what I usually listen to. Still, when I want to bond with my dad, we usually listen to Zep together.
Bob Dylan
Tumblr media
Dylan is a goddamn poet and I love him! But again I just have to be in the mood for him, which doesn’t happen very often right now. Still, though, I won’t argue against his greatness. He truly makes masterpieces. At least his first few albums and in his younger days.
Adele
Tumblr media
Adele has a powerhouse voice and is technically a favorite of mine. But I find sometimes her music is missing something vital, which is why I put her in the honorable mentions category. Again, I realize how talented she is and am not saying otherwise. But, yeah, I’m usually in the mood for her but at the same time, find some of her music lacking. I’m sorry, Adele. I still love your brand.
Well, there you have it. I’ve listened to loads of music growing up and I’ll continue to do so and find new music to love. But these are some of my all time favorite musicians and some honorable mentions. Hope you enjoyed the lsit! I know I enjoyed writing it! <3

@tesoromia + kita. he’s the type of man who will be curious how ballet works. will always be supportive of you, always front row when you have a recital, and he’ll always be cheering for you. will attempt to try ballet stretches for you, even join you in doing workout routines. is also fascinated with your cooking skills and will always bring you his grown vegetables as thanks for your delicious meals. he’s also very responsible, the type that will keep you in check when you feel out of it <3

@solarchuu + yachi. power couple. listen. she can be a little nervous around you but once she’s really comfortable, she will match your energy (would even overpower yours sometimes LOL). she’s your rock. when you need someone to hold on to she will always be there. she’s the type who will support you in anything you do. she may need reassurance from you from time to time when she’s anxious but you’re more than willing to give it to her (and she does the same). is passionate in everything and you <3
@xybi + osamu. he will always like cooking with you and both of you share different recipes from time to time. will definitely watch your volleyball games because he knows you’re good. will melt when you give him words of affirmation because he knows he wants receiving them as much as he gives it to you. he loves you when you try your very best in everything, but he loves you more because he can relate to you. i hope you both know you don’t have to try so hard in proving yourselves that you’re great, because you are!
@nymphoholic + yamaguchi. i know you deserve all the love there is in the world, and it’s in this sweetheart! when someone does you wrong he’ll be standing up for you and protect you at all costs. idk how else to explain it, he’s just so perfect and so giddy when he’s around you and he’s always there to tend to your needs <3 ykwim
@elydith + iwaizumi. stop. you’re such an amazing person and you’re just so pure and i feel like you deserve someone who will keep up with your kind heart. i know it’s in him. he may be strict at times (he just is when he knows you have to take care of yourself), but it’s all domestic with him; he’ll give you food if you haven’t eaten yet and he’ll volunteer to do your skincare if you’re too sleepy to do so <3 overall very responsible bf <3
@bloodpacks + sugawara. i just think he can keep up with your goofiness, and at the same time, you can count on him when you feel down. he’s genuine with his words and he always reassures you that you’re the greatest and all the hard work you did to reach where you are now is paying off. this man’s patience is astronomical, and if you both had misunderstandings, he will never take his frustrations out on you that even arguing with him feels like love — it never felt like you argued, even <3
@planetoru + oikawa. POWER couple. late night drives with him consists of screaming lyrics and crying to sad songs. no in-between. he has bigbig ego but you sure do humble him everytime; you raise yours higher or you just don’t acknowledge his. it’s funny because he’ll be a pouting mess. then you laugh at him. then he asks for a kiss then everyone’s happy (dw it’s facts i saw him ask you for one). he loves you when you’re happy and he loves you so much more when you need love the most. <3
@gourmetrat + hinata. a fricking ball of sunshine that you deserve so much. he’s not even doing anything and you get so ecstatic around him. he loves being around you because he knows how much light he brings to your life. loves spending nights with you to do whatever you feel like doing. will always be supportive of you and your shenanigans. did i mention ball of sunshine? all your gloomy days are overpowered by his lovable self, you wouldn’t want it any other way <3
@arrogantsonofabiscuit + matsukawa. he’s intimidating at first. a mixture of mature and goofy and he’s actually really easy and soft for you. he likes joking with you and teasing you a lot and when you get mad at him for something he says, he’ll make it up to you by giving you cuddles. he doesn’t want you to be hurt at all! loves easing your mind when you feel stressed about med school and he’s really supportive of you. he cheers for you when you focus on your studies, becomes clingy when you don’t give him attention, then becomes really, truly happy when you spend time with him <3
@luvrinnie + sakusa. he can be stoic, but he has such a soft spot for you. he is so <3 oh he will do ANYTHING for you. will worship the land you walk on. he’s that type yk!! and he’s really observant of you and he knows when your insecurities kick in but he tones it down by expressing his love for you and he just knows you’re perfect especially in his eyes. you can see it in his face; he never lies. overall very caring and loving and you’ll swear you’ll love him forever because it just feels so damn right <3

UA Idol | Chapter Two
Hitoshi Shinsou x Reader
Tumblr media
Word Count: 1,539
Warnings: Language, big anxiety, hint at being used
A/N: I am so sorry I forgot to upload last week! It was my birthday last Saturday and... I had a good time haha. But here is chapter two! Okay, so the “original songs” aren’t actually originals, and I put the lyrics in the actual writing because I know that sometimes people can’t listen to the songs recommended for a fic, so yeah. The songs are “Seventeen (Reprise)” by Troye Sivan and “The District Sleeps Alone Tonight” by Birdy. If you wanted to listen while reading, that would be cool, but it’s not required! Either way I hope you enjoy!
UA Idol Masterlist
───────────────────────────────────
“Oh well aren’t you just the cutest little thing!”
“Midnight, please stop calling every single contestant cute.”
“Why don’t you beg me to Aizawa.”
“No.”
“I gotta agree with her on this one, Aizawa. She’s cute.”
“Hawks, could you at least try to be professional.”
“Ha! Funny! Hi there, chickadee!” Hawks winks, and you grin. “Hello.”
“Alright, so give us the run-down of everything, you know name, reason you’re here, all that. I’m sure you’re tired of being asked, but it would be nice if we knew,” Toshinori says, giving you a wide grin. He seems like the most levelheaded out of all of them, but you know just how goofy he can get. Especially when he’s egged on by Midnight and Hawks. “Ah, I’m (F/n) (L/n), I’m here because well, my roommate Mina talked me into it.”
“The girl we just saw?” “Yeah, she didn’t want to audition alone and she knows that I write songs, so she pushed me to audition, mostly because I’ve been kind of out of the music scene for a hot minute because my ex-boyfriend didn’t like that I did it, so this is like diving right back into. Headfirst. Without taking any diving classes,” you say, and Midnight cocks her head to the side. “Ex-boyfriend? Didn’t like that you did music? Why?”
“He said it was childish and that I need to get a job that will actually provide for me, and since he was older than me, he thought he knew everything. And that’s how I ended up working at some boring ass retail job. Oh, sorry I just swore,” you say, covering your mouth with one hand, eyes wide. Luckily, they all (except for Aizawa, no one knows if he actually smiles since he’s never… done it) chuckle at your reaction. “Don’t worry, they can censor it in post-production,” Midnight says as she leans back in her chair. “I see you brought your own guitar, too! how wonderful! I can’t wait to hear what you’ll be singing for us!” Nori says, still smiling at you, and you feel your nerves slip away. Even though they’re literally legends, they’re actually nice. Wild.
“Speaking of, darling, what will you be singing for us?” Midnight asks and you bite your lip. “Well, actually I have an original that I wrote,” you say, and their interests are visibly all piqued by that. “What’s it called?”
“Seventeen.”
“Alright! Whenever you’re ready!”
You give them a small smile before beginning to strum your instrument, quickly changing between chords. You had a longer version to this song, but you were supposed to cut down the song you were auditioning with to a smaller portion. This was the original poem that you wrote and transformed into a song, so you decided to turn that into your audition. Maybe if you get through, you’ll be able to perform the full song.
“I got these beliefs that I think you wanna break,
Got something here to lose that I think you wanna take from me.
You tell me I’m asleep but I wanna be awake,
Got something here to lose that I know you wanna take.
And he said age is just a number, just like any other,
We can do whatever, do whatever you want.
Girl becomes woman now, can’t tell a man to slow down,
He’ll just do whatever do whatever he wants.
Here he comes,
Like he just walked out of a dream
Doesn’t care you’re seventeen
Or maybe he forgot what it means?
Oh, but here he comes.
Here he comes.”
Your playing is flawless, and your voice is on its A-Game today. You finish up the song, finally looking at the judges who are all just... staring at you? Intensely? Is… that bad…? Suddenly, Midnight speaks. “Do you play piano, too?”
“Uh, yeah. Not as well as guitar, but I’m okay at it...”
“Give us another song.”
“What?!”
“(Y/n), no songwriter who writes something like that only has one song. You definitely have another one,” Aizawa says, and you shrug, scratching the back of your neck. “I may have another one...”
“Please, play it for us!” Nori insists, enthusiastically banging on the table like your drunk friend who sees your waiter bringing their food. Ah. There’s the Toshinori Yagi everyone knows and loves. “If you insist,” you say, nervous, but excited to have the opportunity to perform another one of your songs. “What’s this one called?” Aizawa asks as you hand your guitar to a crew member, making your way over to the piano. “Uh… it’s called The District Sleeps Alone Tonight.”
“Interesting name,” Midnight says, grinning at you. “I’m warning you my piano skills are rusty, so this may be really bad,” you tell them, earning a chuckle from Hawks, Nori, and Midnight before you start to play a second song. You play the opening, beginning to sing.
“Smeared black ink.
Your face is ashen, and I'm barely listening,
To last demands.
I'm staring at the asphalt wondering,
What's buried underneath.
Where I am?
Where I am.
I'll wear my badge.
A vinyl sticker with big block letters adherent to my chest.
Tells your new friends,
I am a visitor here,
I am not permanent.
And the only thing,
Keeping me dry is.
Where I am; in this gaudy apartment complex,
Explaining that I am just visiting.
And I am finally seeing,
Why I was the one worth leaving.
D.C. sleeps alone tonight.
D.C. sleeps alone tonight.
In this gaudy apartment complex,
Explaining that I am just visiting.
And I am finally seeing, why I was the one worth leaving.”
All of your songs are sad, but I mean. You’ve been through some shit. Of course, they’re going to be sad. You literally can’t think of the last time you wrote an actual happy love song. You’re always writing, but love is just a foreign concept to you at this point. At least the good parts of love. You were far too familiar with bad parts. You shorten this one as well, cutting it off smoothly. You didn’t play the piano half bad, which was a relief. You stand back up walking to where you were before taking your place at the piano, retrieving your guitar from the crew member. “Were those by chance both about this ex that you mentioned?” Hawks asks, and you nod. “Yeah, he gave me… quite the material to write about,” you say with a small laugh. Before you know it, Midnight has engulfed you in a hug. Damn, she smells good. Since you’re holding your guitar, you only use one arm to hug her back. How did you end up in this position? You never thought the Midnight would ever hug you. Honestly, one of the best feelings. Ever. She smiles at you, squeezing your shoulder before going back to her seat. Oh yeah, I guess both of those songs did kind of confirm some… not so good things about him. Well that makes sense now. “Well, chickadee, I don’t think I can actually judge you. You’re a better songwriter than I’ll ever be.”
“I’m sorry, what did you just say?”
“It hurts me to say it, it really does. But I’m being one hundred percent genuine with you.”
“Did you know you’re actually the first person to ever get his prideful ass to admit that he wasn’t as good at something as someone?” Aizawa says, and you just give a small smile. First, they ask you to sing another one of your original songs, and then Keigo Takami tells you you’re a better songwriter than him? This is all way too much. You expected them to like, maybe say your songs were okay but here you are, receiving extreme compliments. From your literal idols. You’re fine. It’s fine. This is cool. This is normal. “Seriously, though. Your song writing skills are on par with all of ours, if not even better. And your voice is one of the best we’ve heard in the competition so far. Top two material if you ask me. Good job,” Aizawa continues. Okay. No longer fine. This is not cool. This is crazy.
“Also, rusty on the piano my ass!” Midnight exclaims and you laugh. “I think I speak for all of us when I say yes. Anyone want to lie and say I’m wrong?” Nori asks, and your eyes go wide when none of them say anything. You even got Aizawa’s yes? He’s literally there to keep people in check, he barely ever says yes to anyone. And he was saying yes to you? Hawks holds out the ticket with a smirk, and you just stare at it with wide eyes. “Wait… really?”
“Yes, really! Now take it! We’ll see you in Hell Week,” Midnight says, and you walk forward, grabbing the ticket and thanking all of them. As you leave you hear murmurs from them, but only hushed words like “unbelievable” and “amazing.” You walk out of the doors, still shocked, honestly. The first person you see is Mina, and you slowly hold up your ticket. She literally, literally tackles you in a hug. She’s also kinda screaming. And Present Mic joins her. This is what purgatory is, isn’t it?

BTS Reaction: a TXT member has a crush on BTS member’s secret girlfriend
REQUEST:  Reaction idea: bts’s reaction to finding out one of the txt boys has a crush on their s/o (the rest of bts knows they’re dating but not txt)
I don’t know TXT as well as I know BTS so please cut me some slack when it comes to portrayal of the members!
Sorry that this one is gender-specific. I realized after I wrote it.
The reactions imply that you are older than the TXT member. That’s just how I wanted to write it.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Namjoon:  The boys had all gone out, so you were hanging out by yourself in the dorm, watching Netflix. All of a sudden you heard loud knocking on the door. You looked out the peephole. It was…. Taehyun? You were surprised, opening the door to greet him. Taehyun looked distressed.“Hey… are any of the hyungs here? I really really need their help.” He asked nervously, and you shook your head. “They went out, but what’s wrong? Can I help?” You inquired, concerned. He sighed.“My cat, Hobak, is really sick and I need to take him to the vet. I can’t drive and hold him at the same time and you can’t really take a cat in an uber…” He explained, distressed. “I’ll take you,” You volunteered, leaving with him to get the cat. After the trip to the vet Hobak was fine, thankfully, though they said that he wouldn’t have been okay if they hadn’t gotten him there in time. Days later Namjoon overheard Taehyun talking about it.“She’s literally an angel, she totally didn’t have to help at all but she did and it saved Hobak’s life! She’s unbelievable. I really like her. I think I’m a little in love.” Taehyun gushed. Namjoon left the room, sighing and rolling his eyes. He was sympathetic, of course. You were amazing, he was perfectly aware of that. But he found Taehyun’s crush on you more annoying than anything, even if he understood it.
Jin:  Jin had a few guys, including Yeonjun, over to the BTS dorms to play MarioKart. You were there as well, as you often were, since you were friends with all of BTS. Yeonjun was the only person present that didn’t know that you and Jin were together. You spent the whole evening gaming, with you surprising everyone and completely kicking their butts at MarioKart. The BTS boys knew of your insane MarioKart skills already but Yeonjun was shocked and amazed at how you left everyone in the dust. At one point you got up and left to go to the bathroom. Yeonjun had a big smile on his face. He looked at Jungkook, saying “She’s so cool! And she’s really cute. Do you think she’d date a younger guy?”. Jungkook just blinked at him before shrugging and saying “Yeah she is cool. I’m not sure she would go for someone younger though. Just a hunch.” He said, discreetly looking at Jin with a little smirk. Yeonjun sighed and shrugged. Jin found the whole thing to be funny, whispering to you to tell you when you returned to the living room. “It’s no surprise. What would you expect? You’re worldwide handsome’s girlfriend, of course you’re amazing, and everyone can see it.” He said so only you could hear. You grinned at him, saying nothing more to avoid creating suspicion about the two of you.
Yoongi:  Even though your relationship was a secret, Yoongi wasn’t one to get jealous. He didn’t care that much, confident that other men weren’t a threat. It was a good thing, too, particularly when one day Beomgyu asked Yoongi to give his opinion on a song he was writing. Beomgyu showed Yoongi what he had so far. Yoongi was actually pretty impressed at the song’s progress up to that point, making some specific suggestions for improvements. He looked carefully at the lyrics, then smirked at Beomgyu. “Somebody’s got a crush,” he said, causing Beomgyu to get all embarrassed and shy. “That’s what the song is for… I wanted to write it for her.” He admitted, not meeting Yoongi’s eyes and blushing profusely.“She must be pretty amazing to warrant a song,” Yoongi mused, and Beomgyu smiled, nodding. “She is. I’ve never met anyone like her. Y/N noona is the coolest girl -“ He cut himself off, a look of horror appearing on his face as he realized what he’d said. Yoongi was careful not to let his facial expression show any reaction, though it was hard. He felt bad for the younger boy. He was certainly not expecting the song to be for HIS girlfriend (despite your relationship being a secret outside of BTS). “Well, good work so far. Don’t quit songwriting, you’re doing well.” He said supportively, patting Beomgyu on the shoulder before the younger boy thanked him and left. Once alone, Yoongi sighed heavily and shook his head. “Poor kid…” He muttered to himself before returning to his work.
Hoseok:  You were very smart and a bit of a nerd, so you helped the TXT boys with their homework in their spare time, having no problem whatsoever with the high school level work. You enjoyed helping them. They were all very sweet and took the work seriously, which is more than you could say about people you’d tutored in the past. Beomgyu in particular was very invested in the schoolwork. You had fun having academic discussions with him. He was kind of a kindred spirit in that sense, interested enough to even have a favorite mathematician. One day Hobi came to pick you up, which wasn’t suspicious because everyone thought the two of you were just best friends. As Beomgyu left, a piece of paper fell out of his bag. You didn’t notice it, so while you packed up your books, Hobi saw the paper and picked it up, reading it. It was a confession letter….. from Beomgyu, to you. He smiled. “You need to see this. It’s the cutest thing.” He said, handing you the paper. You read it, blushing at how complimentary the letter was. “This is so sweet! I hope he’s not too upset when I turn him down. He’s a great kid.” You mused, and Hobi put an arm around his shoulder. “Knowing you, you’ll reject him in the kindest way possible. He’ll be fine.” The two of you left and went home.
Jimin:  One day, while walking down the hallway in the BigHit building, Jimin overheard a conversation. He didn’t mean to eavesdrop, but when he heard your name mentioned, he couldn’t help but listen. “Well, remember when I was super nervous right before we performed at the MMAs? I was pretty much having a panic attack, I couldn’t breathe. I don’t even really know why, I just felt like I was under huge pressure all of a sudden. It was very unlike me. But Y/N noona noticed me freaking out backstage and she sat with me and calmed me down. She’s seriously so nice and so caring, she talked to me and helped me get it together enough to perform. I haven’t been able to stop thinking about her ever since. She’s really special.” Kai said, and that was enough for Jimin to walk away purposefully, going to find you. He stormed into the sitting area where you were scrolling through social media on your phone. Thankfully the two of you were alone. “Do you like Kai?” Jimin asked abruptly, the jealous demon inside him rearing its ugly head. You looked at him, blinking in total confusion. “Like, Kai from EXO? Jongin? I mean he kind of looks like you in a way so he’s cute I guess, but—“ Jimin cut you off. “No! Hueningkai.” He said impatiently, clearly getting very worked up. You laughed slightly, smiling. “I mean sure I like him, he’s like a cute baby, but not in the way you’re implying, like, at all,” you said, confused by Jimin’s sudden outburst. You saw your boyfriend visibly relax. You sighed, getting up and walking over to him, putting your hands on his shoulders. “You know, you don’t need to get so upset like this. I love you and I don’t have eyes for anyone else.” You said, and his eyes crinkled at the corners as he gave you a soft smile. “It’s dumb, I know. I’m sorry. I just love you too much to lose you.” He wrapped his arms around your waist and kissed your forehead, satisfied at least for now that you weren’t going anywhere.
Taehyung:  You were at a BigHit party with the boys one night. It was a low-key get-together, so you were enjoying catching up with everyone. While you were mid-conversation with someone across the room, Taehyung was walking back from the bathroom when he overheard a few of the TXT boys talking to each other. “Y/N noona is sooo hot, I really want to ask her out. Do you think she’d say yes?” He heard Taehyun say to Beomgyu and Yeonjun. Taehyung smirked to himself, walking back to where you were. He discreetly pulled you into a hallway away from the main room so you could be alone. He wrapped his arms around you in a hug, resting his chin on the top of your head. “So apparently you’re a tae magnet.” He said, and you raised your eyebrows in both amusement and confusion. “I should hope so, we’ve been together long enough.” You laughed quietly in reply. “No, I mean not just me. Taehyun has a huge crush on you. I just overheard him talking about you.” Taehyung explained, clearly finding the situation quite funny. You pulled away from the hug just enough to look at his face. You shook your head slightly, laughing at his comment now that you understood what he meant. “I only care about attracting one Tae.” You said before giving him a peck on the lips. “I do feel bad about Taehyun though. I’d hate to hurt his feelings.” You sighed a little. Taehyung shrugged. “He’ll be fine.” He replied, pulling you back for one last hug before you had to discreetly return to the party apart from each other.
Jungkook:  Jungkook loved that when he was with TXT, he was a hyung for once. He got quite attached to the younger boys and was super supportive of them. He often gave them advice and was generally really caring. One day he went to visit TXT, as he sometimes did, just to hang out. They were chatting and catching up, having a good time and eating some snacks. Nothing was out of the ordinary, they were just having fun talking. That is, until Soobin pulled Jungkook aside. He needed advice. “I really like this girl... We’re kind of friends, but I don’t know how to go about confessing to her. What do I do?” Soobin asked earnestly. Jungkook smiled, finding this situation adorable. “I don’t know, it depends on the girl. Can you tell me who it is? Do I know her?” He asked. Soobin was blushing. “Um… I think she’s one of your friends, actually. You know Y/N noona, right?” He asked apprehensively. Jungkook was, frankly, Jungshook. You were his girlfriend, but the other BTS members were the only people who knew about it. It was a secret at the moment, so he was unsure how to let Soobin down easy without exposing your relationship. “Yeah, we’re friends. I don’t know how to tell you this, but I’m pretty sure she’s seeing someone. It might be better not to confess to her.” Jungkook informed him gently, feeling sympathetic. Soobin’s face fell. “Oh… well, I’m glad I asked. Thank you for helping, hyung."

Q&A: Louis Tomlinson On 'Kill My Mind,' Taylor Swift, Oasis And More
Louis Tomlinson released his invigorating new single, the indie-rock leaning "Kill My Mind," this past week. The song has become an instant hit, earning raves from his massive fan base and critics.
When I spoke to him by phone this past Friday morning as he was leaving rehearsal for an upcoming show in Madrid, Spain, he said, "With this song I feel like I'm finally comfortable musically."
As a fan who grew up on bands like Oasis and the criminally underrated British band James, both of whom were featured on Tomlinson's recent playlist of "Kill My Mind," influences, Tomlinson is very excited to explore his rock side.
I spoke with Tomlinson about what led to the new direction musically, the love he still has for One Direction fans, why he admires Taylor Swift's social media skills and Liam Gallagher's rock star attitude and more.
Steve Baltin: How gratifying has the response to "Kill My Mind" been?
Louis Tomlinson: I think for anyone who works creatively it's always important to take risks and get out of your comfort zone a little bit. But, for me, with this song I feel like I'm finally really comfortable musically. I think I played around with a few different sounds on my previous singles. And I think I really found my home now. Before I was kind of making music that I think I assumed was the music I was supposed to make as opposed to just following my heart and doing what I love. I feel really comfortable and really confident in this song.
Baltin: It's comfortable for you, but for the fans it is still a little new. So that's what I meant about the response being gratifying.
Tomlinson: Yeah, you're right. It's taking a risk I suppose with the fan base. But I think also where I'm lucky and what my fans have reacted to is they see how comfortable I am and how natural this is for ne. And I think they feed into that. The reaction has been absolutely incredible, it has been amazing. I feel great about the whole process.
Baltin: Do you feel like you are more comfortable in general as you get older and that is extending to music?
Tomlinson: Yeah, and I think as you grow up you're more confident and use your experience and trust yourself really. I think in this process it was important for me to trust myself cause when I first played the song for the record labels they were probably a little bit shocked, when I say record labels I mean my American label and UK label, but very excited. I think it's very important to push the boundaries and it makes me feel a lot better.
Baltin: Do you feel like this is the direction you want to grow musically?
Tomlinson: It's definitely taught me a lot and the reaction being so great, like the playlist I uploaded, this is a lot of my inspiration and a lot of my influences. I think this is probably the biggest statement off the album.I wrote this song with the deliberate intention of feeling a little bit shocking and exciting.
Baltin: Is "Kill My Mind" indicative or does it set the tone for the rest of the album?
Tomlinson: Definitely, I did a long of songwriting over the last two to three years and I've worked with a lot of different people.  I wrote three or four songs with Jamie Hartman, who's obviously on "Kill My Mind." And that was the first of that bunch and it made the songwriting after that a lot easier. One thing I did just want to mention is on the sonics of the song, other songs I released were really emotionally heavy. It was a great song for me and I needed to get it off my chest, but that's also kind of what made me excited also about the sound of "Kill My Mind" and the album kind of following on from that. It feels exciting, fun and nostalgic as opposed to being too emotionally heavy cause I didn't want to be defined as an artist who writes sad songs. That's now what I want to be.
Baltin: But every great artist has that diversity, from Elton John to the Stones, they have that range of sad songs and rock tracks. Who are those artists that inspire you for their evolution and range?
Tomlinson: It's a good question because sometimes in music, I'm not gonna mention any names, you get those bands that follow the radio trends. You lose a bit of identity and who they are as artists. If I think about my favorite band ever, Oasis, and I think about Liam Gallagher, I think it's almost as impressive he's retained such a strong and well-known sound, but still makes it different enough and exciting enough. People have been listening to Liam Gallagher for however many years and still they're interested.
Baltin: I have interviewed Liam multiple times and part of what makes him so special as an artist is he just doesn't give a damn.
Tomlinson: No he don't (laughs). It's refreshing.
Baltin: Going back to the playlist, James for example is a band I love. It's interesting because it often takes time when making a record to gain perspective on what a song or record is about. Did you feel all these influences right away or did it take a minute to hear them?
Tomlinson: I think that playlist, when I put it together, it was kind of a combination of general inspiration to me across my life and also specific to that song. But where I'm from in England, the North of England, that band sound was very prominent anywhere. And it's something that I've always loved and is a little bit different to your average One Direction fan's music choice. I've made some other playlists as well. It's really amazing for me for fans of mine who haven't heard someone like a Sam Fender, unbelievable, and just to get that moment of me sharing what I love listening to music and them giving their feedback is really nice.
Baltin: What would be the coolest thing you could hear someone say about these songs you turned them on to?
Tomlinson: For me, I'm big on lyrics and I suppose that's why I mentioned Sam Fender, I think he is a fantastic lyricist. And if there's a song or a lyric or something that I resonate with and then I get feedback from the fans that they also like that, it makes us feel even more connected and even more on the same page. And social media in general, obviously that is a massive conversation and there are of course pros and cons and everyone can be on social media less. But the amazing thing for me is it gives me a chance to have a real, genuine, direct relationship with my fans. I know that I wouldn't feel as close to my fans without social media. What is great when Taylor Swift, and she is f**king amazing with her fans, does these listening parties and brings fans to the house, the involvement of the fans is never ending. Nobody knows better than these people. So I'm always looking for clever and different ways to involve them and feel like they're included in the whole creative.
Baltin: Talk about how bringing this song to the stage excites you and also invigorates other older songs as well.
Tomlinson: Yeah, and that I have trouble with, putting a set list together because there are certain songs that fans gravitate to. I feel like, especially with my earlier couple of songs, like the Steve Aoki song, I love the song and it was a great song for me at the time, but musically it feels so different to where I'm at with "Kill My Mind" that we actually did completely strip that and start again and made a bit of an indie-pop version of it, my version of it. So it fits more in line with the rest of the stuff.
Baltin: What songs are you excited to bring to the stage and see how people respond to them?
Tomlinson: Well "Kill My Mind" obviously, I'm very excited to do that live. It's a song that naturally leans to a good live show. So that's an obvious one. But I think there are a couple of, on the album in general, songs that are written with fans in mind. So a little bit more sentimental songs and those are always special moments where, like you say, I can make eye contact with people in the first few rows and I can watch their brains thinking about the lyrics and how it relates to them.

THE ( VERY ) IN - DEPTH ! tw for mentions of abuse of drugs and alcohol, terminal illness, hospitals, and death
after years of marriage, fletcher’s parents had him when they were both about to enter their forties, as one last, final attempt to find back to the love they’d had for each other when they started dating way back in high school. it didn’t work. his father left  when fletcher was four; leaving divorce papers on the kitchen table two weeks before christmas. him and his mother, winnie, moved from one of the suburbs to a smaller, more affordable apartment in brooklyn. they were never quite comfortable, money-wise, but they didn’t struggle either. two years after the move, his mother started seeing a guy she’d been introduced to through friends from work. fletcher adored richard from the first time they met, and as the years went by he came to consider him more of a dad than he ever did the one who left. that’s probably why he didn’t mourn when his father passed suddenly and unexpectedly the summer he turned ten. the following summer, winnie and richard married, and both her and fletcher completely rid themselves of the man who walked out on them when they both changed their last name from his to richard’s - duncan.
when richard moved in, he’d brought an electric guitar and a sparse record collection with him. these were fletcher’s first real introduction to music. he dove in head first. there’s no telling how many evenings they sat in the living room, records playing, or fletcher practicing on the guitar until he was caught up with his dad’s guitar skills. turns out, he was actually a bit of a natural. after he’d mastered his first instrument, he moved onto another. his mother - who’d been a classically trained, lifetimes ago - taught him to the best of her ability on a keyboard they got from a yard sale. he spent hours at a time in record stores. championship vinyl had always been richard’s favorite, and it wasn’t long until it was his favorite too. consuming music wasn’t enough, though. by the time he was in high school, fletcher was writing his own songs; creating his own music. of course - none of it was ever remotely up to par with the songs he kept discovering, but it didn’t matter. him and two kindred spirits he met at school formed a band, performing covers and the stuff he wrote. to afford actual gig gear - not that they ever booked many of those - fletcher applied for a part time job the only place he could think to; championship vinyl. though he'd been a regular for the better part of a decade by that time, he was still in disbelief and awe when he got the job.
fletcher thrived at championship. he took on all the shifts his schedule would allow him, and even skipped class to cover for anyone that asked. even when he was off the clock, he’d hang around. if he wasn’t flicking through new inventory or catching up with the whoever was at work, he’d be sitting on the rooftop with his guitar, a pen and a roll of receipt paper - scratching down song ideas and testing out new material. things were looking up; he was a creatively fulfilled high school senior with a job he loved, parents that supported- and loved him unconditionally, and he’d just been accepted into nyu. therefore, it rocked his world when his dad stopped by during one of his shifts, only to collapse while fletcher had his back turned to find a rare vinyl he’d set aside for him as a surprise.
the diagnosis was a death sentence. months flew by in the blink of an eye, and he watched the only dad he’d ever truly known wither away before his eyes. weeks shy of a year to the date of the diagnosis, on the day richard duncan passed away, his son brought the old record player and the by now weathered records from the brooklyn apartment to the hospital room. he drew his last breath surrounded by the music and the family he loved.
not recently having gone through the same kind of world crumbling sorrow and the revelation about not wasting away and following your dreams that walks that’s bound to follow, his bandmates weren’t all that keen on the plan fletcher presented them with; movin to la and making it in music. really making it. with one of three members hellbent on leaving, the band broke up. they never could agree on a name, anyway. he turned in his resignation at championship, and jokingly promised james namsen to not come back until he’d won a grammy. winnie, though heartbroken to first lose the love of her life, and now having her son move away, had nothing but support and encouragement to offer when he announced he’d be dropping out of college to pursue music.
the first two years, nothing happened. he was living and working in downtown la; the apartment he shared with four roommates was just shy of being a shoebox, and the franchise record  store he eventually scored a job at lacked the soul and the hum of energy he was used to from championship back in new york. just as ambition and hope was wearing thin, things were starting to look up for him. he was meeting the right people in the right places, at the right times. after opening for a few up and coming acts, he was approached by a manager, who in turn introduced him to a few labels. though he was very aware he wasn’t a strong vocalist, he was confident in himself as a musician and a songwriter, and it seemed so was the internationally renowned label that ended up offering him a contract. his first single dropped not even a year later, soon followed by his debut album.
though his star was slowly rising, the album made only a miniscule splash. he toured it as an opening act and played a handful of shows on each coast. going back into the studio to work on the next album felt different. making the first one hadn’t felt authentic. not the process, nor the result. he’d been too agreeable; too eager to please and too eager to show he was worth everyone’s time and money. this time around, he was more assertive and demanded more control over the creative process. less co-writers were brought in, and he now had a say in which producers he worked with. his sophomore album released to generally positive reviews and ratings, but it seemed that would be it. then, almost over night, his shit was doing numbers. big numbers.
sure - his label was running some promo for his sophomore album, but it seemed most people were catching wind of his stuff by word of mouth. people were actually buying his albums. both of them. when tickets to his second headline tour went on sale, they sold out in days. dates were added and venues were upgraded to answer the growing demand for tickets as more and more people found his music. he was playing famous venues now; legendary venues. festivals with hundreds of thousands of attendees. all over the country. all over the world. if he didn’t have a microphone or a guitar in his hand, he had a beer. or vodka. maybe whiskey. sometimes a joint, sometimes pills. he was at parties, then he was hosting parties. then he was at parties hosted in his honor. for the first time in his life, he had money. hard, real, fuck you money. he paid off the student loan he’d racked up during his one year stint at nyu, and the mortgage on the apartment he’d grown up in. he bought a house in beverly hills, and a two story apartment in brooklyn - both of which had shelves custom made for the gilded statuettes and trophies declaring him to be the best in a slew of categories. he’d done it. he was twenty-six and on top of the world. invincible. and then his mom's heart gave out.
for the three years that followed, his career suffered as he partied harder. friends he’d known for years disappeared, and were replaced with new faces that all blurred together. there were scandals, but they too were all a blur - leaked pictures and videos; shows he decided last minute he didn’t wanna do; shows he couldn’t do because he showed up too far gone to stand upright. people who got too close to him on one of the bad days, who’s faces he scarred forever. arrests, and settlements made outside of court. the label was getting antsy too, and when it passed the two year mark of the last time he’d set foot in the studio, his team - headed by the same manager that been with him through it all; that’d seen potential and believed in him all those years ago - pleaded with him to get help. begrudgingly, fletcher agreed. after a few months at rehab, he returned - clean, and determined to get back to work. the process was longwinded and intense, but the finished product was, in his eyes, solid gold. and - luckily? surprisingly? - the world at large agreed.
he toured the album with dates booked at relatively smaller venues this time around, but everywhere was packed full to the brim with people. throughout the time working on the album he’d been doing okay; staying sober and surrounding himself with good intentioned people. but being back on the road took a toll on him he hadn’t expected, and it didn’t take long for him to turn to alcohol when it was so easily accessible all around him, at all times. still, things were fine, and he was even relearning to appreciate the electric energy of performing live in front of an audience. to celebrate the last show of the us leg of the tour, the label threw an afterparty for the band, the team, the crew, and their friends. as people were starting to leaving the venue, fletcher sent some members of his band and a couple of their friends ahead with a key to his suite at a hotel nearby, while he thanked the label executives that’d been at the show. when he showed up, a glass was shoved into his hand, and as the party picked back up, someone got out the pills they’d kept at the bottom of their pocket all night. when offered, fletcher - on top of the world once more - accepted.
someone snitched. and to the media, no less. when confronted by his team, he denied it. after being open about his struggle to overcome addiction, something like this would be damning for the reputation he’d rebuilt over the last two years. which is why he lied through his teeth. but then the videos from the suite appeared online, and his ruse was up. the rest of the tour was cancelled, and after completing a thirty day program, he was back in brooklyn.
it took some convincing, but he eventually went along with the ‘find back to your roots by returning to where it all started’ plan his team had cooked up. he also agreed to let someone else run his social media accounts for the time being. how his manager had gotten him a job at championship, fletcher didn’t know. he suspected a monthly bribe the size of his paycheck and then some was involved. but then again, he’d never known james namsen to be that kind of guy. for the first few weeks, he showed up for his shifts - sometimes on time, sometimes not - kept his head down, tried to engage with as few customers and co-workers as possible, then ditched as soon as he was off the clock. but there’d always been something special about the record store on the corner of bedford and sterling. soon enough, he began occasionally going up to the rooftop once his shift was over. approaching customers to offer his service before they approached him. show up early to catch up with whoever was working the shift before him. if he was having a particularly good day, he’d stop by to hang around even if he wasn’t on the schedule. he was well aware he wasn’t always easy to be around - years of living the high life and putting up walls having made him cynical, and standoffish, and discourteous. even if the boy he’d been when he walked out of there years ago was long gone, championship vinyl had stayed the same. and though fletcher’s yet to admit it, being back felt like being home.

(PART 2) Time for the DR2 cast! Linguist!Hiyoko, Historian!Teruteru, FigureSkater!Akane, Blogger!Kazuichi, LuckyStudent!Ibuki, Songwriter!Fuyuhiko, Astrologist!Mikan, Charmer!Nagito, Archer!Mahiru, TrackStar!Hajime, Guitarist!Peko, Friend!Imposter, Herbalist!Chiaki, Carpenter!Gundham, Hairstylist!Sonia and MassageTherapist!Nekomaru!
:DDD I love doing the DVHS talents (tho I’m biased)
Ultimate Imposter (Friend):
It wasn’t much of a talent, but he liked people.
Being friendly was just in his nature.
There was hardly a person who didn’t like him.
Teruteru Hanamura (Historian):
There was just something about history that intrigued him.
He knew a lot of little-known facts about the world.
His goal was to not repeat past mistakes from history.
Mahiru Koizumi (Archer):
She’s very strong, even though she doesn’t look it.
She always hits her target, even if she’s throwing something.
She’s the kind of person to not make a huge deal out of her talent.
Peko Pekoyama (Guitarist):
Guitar was the only instrument she could play, but she was amazing at it.
She always felt perfectly herself when she played.
She doesn’t often collab with others, but she’s a good sport when she does.
Ibuki Mioda (Lucky Student):
She always had a happy-go-lucky attitude.
She mostly disregarded whatever luck came her way.
Although, she was a bit superstitious when it came to some of her luck.
Hiyoko Saionji (Linguist):
She’d always liked being able to learn and understand many languages.
Sometimes she’d speak in them to confuse everyone else.
Or, if she was in a mood, curse at everyone else.
Mikan Tsumiki (Astrologist):
She blamed her horoscope for a lot of what happened to her.
She knows everything there is to know about astrology.
When she gets serious about it, she could get pretty creepy.
Nekomaru Nidai (Massage Therapist):
Nekomaru’s massages are some of the best you’ll ever get.
He has a whole calm aura around him- until he opens his mouth.
He’s loud, but is great about calming others down.
Gundham Tanaka (Carpenter):
Gundham could make anything under the sun.
He always smelled faintly of sawdust because of it, though.
He liked the feel of the wood under his hands.
Nagito Komaeda (Charmer):
It was less of a talent and more of his personality, really.
He just had a way with words.
Out of his classmates, he’s definitely the most persuasive.
Chiaki Nanami (Herbalist):
Chiaki loves tending to the herbs in her garden.
She knows all the medicinal or poison properties of them.
Her favorites are the succulents. She’s named all of them.
Hajime Hinata (Track Star):
Hajime always liked running, and he was fast. Obviously.
It was more of a trained skill than a talent.
He didn’t really like showing it off unless he had to.
Akane Owari (Figure Skater):
She was one of the only people she knew who could execute elite moves.
Really, she preferred hockey, or even speed skating.
Figure skating was too stuffy of an activity for her.
Kazuichi Souda (Blogger):
He always tried hard to impress people, even on the internet.
That’s why he liked his blog; it was a blank slate.
He still wanted to be liked, though.
Sonia Nevermind (Hairstylist):
Sonia loved working with people’s hair.
It may be stereotypical, but she also knew all of the gossip from helping people with their hair.
She wanted to cut her own once it grew long enough.
Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu (Songwriter):
He didn’t like broadcasting his talent to everyone.
Good luck living if you look at incomplete lyrics of his.
His songs are much more deep than you’d imagine.

Louis Tomlinson released his invigorating new single, the indie-rock leaning “Kill My Mind,” this past week. The song has become an instant hit, earning raves from his massive fan base and critics.
When I spoke to him by phone this past Friday morning as he was leaving rehearsal for an upcoming show in Madrid, Spain, he said, “With this song I feel like I’m finally comfortable musically.”
As a fan who grew up on bands like Oasis and the criminally underrated British band James, both of whom were featured on Tomlinson’s recent playlist of “Kill My Mind,” influences, Tomlinson is very excited to explore his rock side.
I spoke with Tomlinson about what led to the new direction musically, the love he still has for One Direction fans, why he admires Taylor Swift’s social media skills and Liam Gallagher’s rock star attitude and more.
Steve Baltin: How gratifying has the response to “Kill My Mind” been?
Louis Tomlinson: I think for anyone who works creatively it’s always important to take risks and get out of your comfort zone a little bit. But, for me, with this song I feel like I’m finally really comfortable musically. I think I played around with a few different sounds on my previous singles. And I think I really found my home now. Before I was kind of making music that I think I assumed was the music I was supposed to make as opposed to just following my heart and doing what I love. I feel really comfortable and really confident in this song.

[FULL] 10 _ OUR SONGS (The last team in the rankings (5th) will be leaving the show :’()
+ DDR and Cart Racing. Too cute. Shen Shen.
10:56 - MC: Qi-ge, you’re such a cool guy, and you love racing. Why did you let Yuning race, instead of doing it yourself? RXQ: I know YN’s skills. Another thing is that everyone knows that I love racing. For me to win, is obvious. Losing would lose me too much face. So, I thought it would be better to let YN do it. LYN: Qi-ge saw that I really wanted to play, so he let me do it. MC: Let me tell you, through the whole course, the fastest in speed was actually XZ. But the trophy goes to LYN.
Zhou Huajian x Jiang Yiqiao - 阴天 (Yin Tian)
22:40 - MC: I think we can all completely understand how FYQ lost at DDR, being his first time playing. What happened to you while racing? A: There were really very skilled people there. HJ-dage is too awesome. ZhanZhan- skilled. Yuning. They drove so well that I couldn’t even see them, and I was driving fast enough. MC: I notice there’s one person you haven’t mentioned- Zhou Shen. A: ShenShen and I were side by side. He was behind me. ZS: He speaks too highly of me. I was on a different playing field completely. ZHJ: Can I say this? A: Say? ZS: ?? ZHJ: Zhou Shen drove in the opposite direction.
[ShenShen trying to learn the route from Yuning] 24:10 - LYN: There’s only one way. ZS: There’s only one? LYN: Just don’t go on the grass and you’ll be fine. There’s only one way. ZS: Everyone, please be careful! If you see me on the road, please make way!! – A: Sometimes you can see a person-less cart roaming around. ZS: That is to say, all you could see of me was the helmet. HL: Don’t go driving out on the street like that. ZS: I won’t. I won’t even drive a car.
Fei Yuqing x Ayanga - 卷珠帘 (Juan Zu Lian) x 凤凰于飞 (Feng Huang Yu Fei)
26:51 - RXQ: Wow, they have a qin?! 26:59 - ZS: We don’t have anything. HL: We have dry ice!
34:28 - MC: The first two groups were already so amazing. The third group- to sing after these two amazing seniors… (how do you feel?) XZ: I’m just very nervous. Because the first two groups were too good x3 MC: You have to know. Na-jie told me she was definitely coming back. XZ: /mental breakdown/ XZ: OK! She will. She will.
Angela Chang x Xiao Zhan - 呐喊 (Na Han | Shout)
35:46 - MC: I wonder if the other teams feel like this is unfair. Other Teams: ?? Zhan: ! MC: Because it feels like there are three people on Na-Zhan Team (instead of two). There’s someone behind the scenes always giving them input! ZHJ: Yes, yes, yes. How about we cut them by 50 points? MC: First cut 50 points off? XD XZ: !! 🙏 (have mercy)
37:14 - XZ: People’s impression of me, they always say I’m 文质彬彬 (elegant and simple, elegant and polite). I sing very lyrical songs. But really I.. I do have a different heart. So I’m very thankful that Angela-laoshi is here, and is willing to help me perform different things. I’m pretty happy. A: /looks at Zhan Zhan/ XZ: /looks back/ Really! A: Thank you.
42:14 - MC: Are you feeling satisfied? A: I’m feeling pretty smug. XZ: Yeah. MC: XZ. This is the first time I’ve seen your veins bursting out. XZ: LOL MC: This song is actually quite difficult. XZ: Yes. To me, there was some difficulty. MC: Then why did you decide to take on this challenge? XZ: Because I really like this song. When I… was still in my youth… /Angela elbows him/ I remember this song was about a small girl who was shouting out the things in her heart, wanting to grow up. She wanted to be accepted by the world and didn’t want to be pushed down by insignificant things. When I heard the new arrangement, I thought “Wow”. This girl has already grown up and she has her own views of the world now. She made her own breakthrough. This song is meaningful not only to Angela-laoshi, but also to me. I really want to breakthrough and shout out what’s in my heart.
43:14 - MC: Throughout this whole program I’ve found that two people always sing along. One is Yuning, the other is Zhou Shen. LYN: I’m shocked. The reason I was singing along was actually because I was warming up- it’s my turn soon. A/XZ: LOL MC: ZS, you’re not also warming up, are you? ZS: Uh…this is. Uh. That is- when I was- Also… XZ: In your youth! ZS: In my youth I would also regularly listen to this song. So I was brought back to that time.
44:08 - MC: Qi-ge, you’re very calm. RXQ: I’m here to savor in the musical feast! I was shocked because XZ looks like he’s very 斯文秀气 (handsome and delicate) but when he was singing “Shout” his explosive force- I thought I was seeing a solitary prince going to rescue his princess. In this distant kingdom, song coming from all sides, he bravely pulled his sword and went forth. I saw this sort of image. XZ: Thank you Qi-ge. Thank you.
Ren Xianqi x Liu Yuning - 天涯 (Tian Ya | Horizon)
53:13 - MC: This is Qi-ge’s “TianYa”, right? I’d like to take the opportunity to let everyone know of the background behind this song. The composer of this song is a well known Japanese singer-songwriter Miyuki Nakajima. RXQ: Yes. MC: When I was looking up this information I found out that this song she made especially for you.  RXQ: Yes, she wrote it for me. I had done a cover of 伤心太平洋 (Shang Xin Tai Ping Yang) before. I made an MV, and I sent it to her. She really liked it and ended up sending me a song. That song was 天涯.  Hacken Lee x Zhou Shen - 天下有情人 (Tian Xia You Qing Ren) [1:01:22 - XZ’s reaction to the song. Same. OMG. Zhou Shen’s an angel.]
1:05:30 - ZHJ: First off, I’d really like to thank the two of you, from the bottom of my heart. No matter what product, what song, it needs a good singer to give it life. I had always thought that the collaboration between me and Qi Yu would be invincible. I really want to thank you for giving this song new life. Thank you, thank you.  ZHJ: I also want to sincerely tell everyone… please don’t forget about us. We are- JYQ: Number 1. Yin Tian.
1:04:43 - RXQ: I always thought in my heart that Zhou Shen was like Peter Pan. LKQ: You mean his physical stature is like Peter Pan? ZS: OTL RXQ: His music has a pure (newborn) quality. His voice has the power to uplift you. Their voices together- still gives me same thought- a match made in heaven. Amazing.
1:07:17 - MC: After today’s performance, Angela will be leaving us. Do you feel unwilling? These performances really are very wonderful. A: Of course. I really want to thank everyone on stage with me today. I think- with my collaboration this time, singing together with Xiao Zhan- I really feel that he is a very polite chi-child… Also meeting these seniors, and getting to know them more in-depth, I understand that these are very exemplary models. Not matter whether it is about professionalism on stage, or even off-stage, every one is very kind. This could be my last time playing with everyone this week. Thank you all.
+ Special Collab Stage: Fei Yuqing x Zhou Huajian + LMAO. Peanut oil CF
1:16:52 - XZ: /receives the envelope/ Thank you. /turns around and hands it to Angela/ Here. A: Hehe. You’re so cute. XZ: I’m a little nervous. A: Do you want me to open it? XZ: Ahh, I don’t want to see it. A: Oh. I saw some words. A: … XZ: Tell me. Does it say we’re out. No way… A: OH. XZ: AH?? A: … XZ: What sort of reaction is that? /can’t stand it anymore and looks/ A: I’m gonna say it! My Dearest Na–Zhan Team… Congratulations on ranking third place. We look forward to your next performance!
1 - Fei Yuqing x Ayanga 2 - Hacken Lee x Zhou Shen (lol @ Hacken’s “YAYYYYYY”) 3 - Na Ying | Angela x Xiao Zhan 4 - Zhou Huajian x Jiang Yiqiao 5 - Ren Xianqi x Liu Yuning ( OH NOOOO :’( )
1:26:16 - ZHJ: It really looks like they’re stepping on cockroaches. XZ: LOL

Made in the AM <Three>
Ch. 3
Niall's POV
Wow! I quite impressed by Alex, she only left the group for thirty maybe forty-five minutes and was able to get a chorus and a verse written. At the rate she is going she will have an entire album written with in a  few days. Not really sure as to why Harry was treating her so poorly she seems like a sweet girl just really quiet. As we are walking to the dressing room I have a better chance to examine her. She isn't that fit but she is still pretty. I think if she toned up she would be the whole package.
"Thanks Niall. You didn't have to". She mumbles as we are about to enter the dressing room.
"I know I didn't have to but I wanted to. You didn't deserve that comment." I reply as I set the guitar she borrowed down on the couch. "Come here you need to meet Lou and Lux."
"Ok, I guess who are they?" She asks with a curious expression.
"Lou is our hair stylist and Lux is her daughter. They are quite awesome."
"Oi! Niall is this our little songwriter?" Lou says as she walks over to us.
"Yes, that would be me. Hi! I'm Alex. Nice to meet you." She extends her hand and Lou pulls her in for a hug.
"No need to be formal if we will be traveling together for a few weeks my dear. And that little angel passed out on the couch is Lux."
"Well ladies, I'll let you two get better acquainted I've got a show to do." I give them both a quick hug and sprint to the stage and take my mic. I know leaving her with Lou is a good idea, she'll be a great girl friend for her on tour, maybe someone who will help her open up to us.
*****************************************************************************************************
Alex's POV
Niall leaves me with Lou who seems like a pretty awesome lady. Little Lux is adorable, can't wait until she is awake and actually playing. I'm a great baby sitter.  "So what do you think of the guys so far?" Lou asks nonchalantly.
"They seem really nice minus one small glitch. But I can ignore it for this job."
"I assume you mean our young Harold?" I nod at her question. She pulls me into the make up chair and starts pulling out brushes. "Relax, I usually only do makeup and hair to do for the boys. Let me do a smoky eye and some other fun things."
"Ummm ok. Sure. I'll be your Barbie to play with for a bit." I state with giggle then relax myself into the chair. Never had anyone to do my makeup so this should be fun.
"Great! So anyways, Harry is just young and quite dumb at times. He is a great guy who gets a bad rap from the media but, he is a nice boy. Granted what he said was a douche bag move, he is really great with Lux."
"I understand but my greatest fear was coming here and someone saying that to me. Yes, Tori brought me on with her as a package deal to help but that was because my song writing skills are actually good sometimes stronger than hers." I state as she applies eyeliner to my eyes.
"You have flawless skin I swear. I'm so use to applying concealer to the boys and for you I'm just getting to dive into eyeliner and the fun stuff.  You were picked for a reason.....Talent don't let anyone take that away from you."
"Thanks. Atleast something is flawless about me. Still working at getting everything else together." I reply sighing.
Lou's finishes adding eye liner and steps back. "You don't give yourself much credit do you? You are beautiful."
I cut her off with out thinking "I'm just struggling with my weight. I want to be beautiful inside and out."
"I understand but honestly it just looks like you need to tone and lift weights. What have you been doing?"
"Zumba and yoga."
She goes back to applying lipstick to me, "That is your problem you need to tone. I can help out if you want me to." Already I like her, she reminds me of Tori with always being positive.
"That would be great. Thanks."
"Now, let's have a look at you. What do you think?"
I focus my attention to the large mirror. "Wow." Was all I managed to get out. She really did an amazing job. My eyes are really popping and the bronzer she put on me gave me a J.Lo glow making my skin looks like brown silk, she did this all with out putting a truck load of make up on.
"You like?" She asks.
"I love!" I jump out of the chair and give her a hug feeling more confident. "Thanks. Let's see how they rock this out."
As much as I hate to admit it their show was pretty awesome. They don't sound half bad live. But they are slightly corny granted they are trying to appeal to teenie boppers so I guess I understand. When I heard their version of "Teenage Dirtbag", I couldn't help but sing along to it. Periodically all the guys except Harry would either wink, smile, or flash me thumbs up while performing.
After the show the guys were busy with the meet and greet while I gathered my stuff and headed towards the van. I've had enough screaming/crying girls for the day. One of arenas security guards open the door and a cold breeze comes in. I walk back into the dressing room while the guys were changing.
"What's wrong love?" Liam asks with a worried expression.
"Nothing is wrong, just kind of chilly outside. Can I borrow a thicker hoodie or a blanket?" I ask shyly.
Liam looks around and pulls a hoodie off the rack. "Here you go, this should keep you warmer than that thin one you have on."
"Thanks". I start back out the door.
"Hey are you not going to wait for us?" Louis asks while putting his shoes on.
"Ummm I guess I can."
He walks back over to me putting his arm around my shoulder. "That's a good girl." I shoot him a dirty look as he chuckles at me.
"Real funny. Bossy." I shoot back him rolling my eyes.
"Nah, not bossy just trying to be helpful, plus you did steal my hoodie."
"How so?"
"Well, we don't anyone kidnapping our songwriter." Niall says with a smile.
Again I roll my eyes then sit Indian style in the large plush chair. I'm feeling ready for a nap I just want to go back to the room. I pull out my notepad and look over my lyrics and keep thinking about what else I'm missing this will eat at me until it is done.
"Alexandria, we are about to leave. Come on." Liam holds his hand to me and pulls me up effortlessly.  How strong is he?
"I'm coming. And again it is just Alex." He nods his head in understanding.
We start to head down the hallway to the outside and I can already hear the fans screaming. I feel anxiety wash over me, I've already had one person be mean to me I don't need their fans going nuts on me either. I've seen how their fans act.  "You ok?" Liam asks me again. He is definitely a caring person.
"I don't know, I'll let you know once we make it through the crowd."
Without further conversation he grabs my hand tightly then looks at me with an intense stare, "Don't let go because you might get lost."
I can feel my eyes getting larger with concern. "Ok." I say so low that is comes out as a whisper.
As the door opens the cool night air hits us. The girls and the paparazzi are screaming and asking questions. "Liam are you dating her?" "Who is she?" And so forth and so on. I was expecting the grip Liam had on my hand to weaken but he held on tight to it.
We finally get into the van and I breathing calms down a bit. "That was intense. Your fans are just wow."
"Aye! It happens but that wasn't too bad. By the way did Lou get ahold of you? I don't remember you wearing any makeup when you got here. You look beautiful either way."  Niall says.
I blush at his comment "Yeah, Lou got to me. She did a great job."
Niall places his head on my shoulder. "I knew you would love her!  She is great with makeup and hair, plus she is an awesome person to hang out with."
"Agreed" we state in unison. The rest of the ride was pretty quiet until. "So Alex has already come up with a song." Three sets of eyes are focused on me even though the car is dark.
"Seriously?" Louis asks as he turns around in his seat.
"Yeah, but I only have a chorus and a verse nothing really special."
"Nothing special? Mates, she sounds great!" Niall says. I honestly wished he would shut up.
"When can we hear it?" Harry states so low that you almost didn't hear it.
"Not tonight maybe tomorrow, after I have more or it is atleast finished." I state in a flat tone.
We pile out of the van with out any issue. I really want to finish this song and maybe work out. I need to get rid of this gut. I decide to change into my work out clothes then listen to more music to get some more inspiration.  I know it is kind of late but listening to more music might help me finish this song.
"Are you going to bed already?  The night is still young love."  Niall states when he sees me almost sprinting to my room.
"Not exactly, I just have some work I'd like to finish up."  I really want to finish this song on my own and without anymore distractions.
"Ohhh, well if you change your mind you can come to my room and hang out."  Niall replies as he pulls my phone from my hands, "Here's my number."
"Thanks.  I'll keep that in mind dear."  I take my phone back then go into my room.  It takes no time for me to change into my work out gear.  I grab my phone, headphones, and room key then head to the hotel's gym.  I figure since it was so late at night no one would be in there.  After thirty minutes of being on the elliptical I have more to the song.....almost.  I take a break so I start stretching.
I have an odd feeling that someone is in here with me, so I turn around towards the door and see Liam only a few feet from me.  He walks closer to me with a towel over his shoulder dressed in a  plain white tank top and black basketball shorts.  "Hey what are you doing down here?" he asks casually as he walks over to the bench press.
"Sorry Liam, I didn't hear you come in.  I guess my music is a little too loud."  I reply pulling the earbuds from my ears then pause the music. "I'm trying to work out and such."
"Ohhh ok.  But why?"
Was this guy serious?  I cock my head to the side and give him a confused look.  "Liam, have you even looked at me?  I'm fat.  I'm . . ."
"Whoa, whoa, whoa.  You aren't fat.  I'd say you are thick which isn't a bad thing.  What are you trying to achieve?"
"I want to be sexy.  I want to feel completely beautiful.  Nothing fancy."
"You do realize beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  I think you are beautiful, I mean if you want to do anything and please don't take offense but, you can always tone up."  Liam starts his stretching.  "How about I work out with you.  I always need an outlet so I work out sometimes after a shower then before we leave I usually box with my trainer."
"Are you sure I won't hold you back?  I'm not really in advanced in any work out routine."
"That's ok we can modify it to where you are comfortable."  he puts his hand up for a high five, "Plus what is the worst that can happen?"
"Well ok then, you have a work out buddy."  I meet his hand for a high five.  This might actually be good for me.  We start by doing some stretches with some music playing.  The conversations is at a minimal aside from him showing me what work out we are doing next until he gets to the bench press.  He is piling on atleast 200lbs.  "Umm dear heart, I know you know your limits but, are you sure you can lift that?  That is more than what I weigh."
He stops putting the weights on then looks at me with his hand on his hip. Without saying a word he picks me up like he is going to carry me over the threshold, "Alex, I've got this.  You aren't heavy at all".  My body is slightly tense in his arms because I have a HUGE fear he is going to drop me. "Quit tensing, I won't drop you.  If I do I'll buy you what ever you want."  He chuckles as he moves around the gym with me in his arms to prove he is more than capable of handling my weight and the bench press.
"Ok.  You have proved a point.  You can put me down now."  I say giggling at him even though I didn't want to put me down.  His arms feel like a safe space.  <sigh> Don't fall for him, you know he is a celebrity and will only hurt you. Oh well, a girl can dream.
*****************************************************************************************************
Liam's POV
I didn't plan on working out tonight, but really glad I did.  Having this time alone with Alex is really nice, I knew when we first met she was a person with low self esteem, but I didn't think it was this bad.  I wonder who told her she was fat.  She isn't skinny by any means, but who wants a bean pole?  Her body type is just thick, I wouldn't kick her out of bed by any means.  My goal is to build her up so that she knows she is beautiful.
It has been a while since I've seen a girl who is comfortable enough to walk around in public without any make up on.  I think that is she lost too much weight she wouldn't look right.  Her ass in the yoga pants is mind blowing since they hug her ass like a glove.  The tank top she has on has a low scoop neck and shows off a great amount of cleavage.  I already know what I'll be doing after working out with her.  Rosy Palmer and her five friends have been my best friend lately, and frankly Alex is adding images to my mind.
"Liam are you listening to me?"  Alex snaps her fingers in my face.  Right now, I need to focus on her emotions not on little Liam.
"Yeah, sorry.  I was zoned out.  What were you saying?"
"I asked if you play any instruments."  she looks at me with a funny expression then shakes her head.
"I play the piano and have been learning the guitar but nothing crazy yet.  Speaking of music....  when can I hear the song you wrote today?"  I haven't forgotten that Niall said she wrote something so quick but, I think she is still nervous about displaying her talents even though that is what she is here for.  Hesitation washing over her face. "Don't be shy love, it's just me."  I flash her a bright sweaty smile.
She nibbles on her lip ring as she is thinking things through, she inhales a deep breath, "I guess after we work out I can play it for you.  It isn't finished yet though."
"Maybe I can help you finish it.  Ok?  Three more and we are done for the night."  After we finished working out, I walk her to her room and agree to meet back in thirty minutes giving her plenty of time to shower and work her nerves out.  I'm really excited to hear what she has so far I feel like her songs might help make this album be great since Zayn has left. I really do miss my best mate.  <sigh>  Ohh well.
I knock on her door and wait for her to let me in.  Her freshly washed face is glowing with red cheeks, guessing she didn't have to take a cold shower like yours truly.  She is in oversized sweatpants that are rolled down with a cami.  I have a feeling that all her clothes make her look sexy even though she doesn't realize it.  "Are you sure you want to listen to it?"
"Yes Alex, let's hear what you have so far."  I sit on the edge of the bed while she has her back against the headboard with a fascinating acoustic guitar in her lap.  I can tell she is a focused song writer because she has papers scattered across the bed along with her MacBook and various other pieces of  recording equipment.  She takes a deep breathe and starts singing, her voice is really quite beautiful, I wonder why she didn't ask for a recording contract.  "Wow!  Niall said the lyrics were great but wow.  You are quite talented.  What prompted the song?"
"Harry hurting my feelings then calling Tori to remind me to never let anyone drag me down."  She states simple with a half smile on her face.  "Plus listening to Maroon 5 gave me inspiration regarding the melody and etc.  My mind is a musical playground at times."
"Well what all do you have in mind for instruments?" Her mind is a musical playground that I want to play on.  I wonder what else we can do.  "So you need a hook to build up to the chorus?"
"Yeah, I've been working on it but I'm not sure how it should go.  So far I've been thinking about if I didn't have them I wouldn't be something."
I inhale deeply and think on her ideas, then it hits, "How about:
If I didn't have you there would be nothing left
The shell of a man who could never be his best
If I didn't have you, I'd never see the sun
You taught me how to be someone, yeah"
"I like it!  It would be great after the first part of the verse.  I was thinking instead of a different verse make it repeat itself to reenforce the feelings of the song.  Saying you are strong and never leaving."  She looks so passionate about this, I can look at her and see all the wheels turning.  This union of her working with us might be great.  "I'm thinking that after the chorus it should be:
Nobody, nobody
Nobody can drag me down
Nobody, nobody
Nobody can drag me.
I want it to feel like a slight rock anthem, you know?"  she simply states.
"I think we already have a song, you are a genius!  Simon was right about you."
"Thanks, so do you want to help me figure out some instruments while you sing the demo version?"
"Since it is your song, how about a duet."  I want the guys to not only see her talent in the lyrics, but I want them to hear her voice.  She bites her lip ring again, indicating she is nervous.  "Come on don't be shy, it'll be ok."
"Fine, I'll do it.  I swear you and Niall keep suckering me into doing things that are totally out of my element."
"Is it such a bad thing?"
"No, it just gives me slight anxiety.  I've been working on breaking out of my shell and just being more happy but most importantly, not worrying about what everyone else thinks."
"Anytime you feel like you are going to freak out just tell me, I'm a great listener."  I rub her leg in a comforting manner she returns a small smile, "Now that we are done with the sappy moment lets see if we can figure this out."
We start putting the instruments together in a crude band set up, it would be better if we had all the actual instruments here but, it works for now.  Maybe we can get time with a proper recording studio or at the very least get the band to play it.  Last time I look at the clock is 2 am and even though her eyes are getting heavy she is still trying to arrange the music like she hears it. This is what I call a true musician/songwriter/producer.  I'm impressed.

The Smiths “The Many Faces of The Smiths” 2019. Today, October 31st, is Johnny Marr’s birthday (b. John Martin Maher, 1963) so I’m spinning this double-LP limited edition on marbled vinyl live/tribute European release, a relatively new acquisition (I think we may have picked it up in London but we bought so many damn records there I can’t remember for sure). The first album is live, a Smiths concert from 1984 recorded just before the release of their debut record The Smiths. It’s really really great: Morrissey sounds fantastic and Marr’s guitar is jangly perfection. It has many of my favorite Smiths songs including “Hand in Glove,” “This Charming Man,” “What Difference Does It Make?,” “Pretty Girls Make Graves” and “Handsome Devil” among other Smiths classics.
The second album is a tribute to the Smiths, recorded by various artists and first released on American Laundromat Records as Please Please Please: A Tribute to The Smiths in 2011. As one reviewer states (from the website American Songwriter) it’s “a somewhat obscure but skilled collection of artists draws out the dreariness of the ‘80s alt-rockers. Without the glitter, sexiness and flamboyancy of The Smiths’ sound, and the charm and slight arrogance of Morrissey’s voice, there’s nothing left but the wry, sometimes pitiful lyrics of a sensitive guy. And they sound downright heavy.” I’ve never heard of any of the artists on the tribute but for the most part they do a good job at interpreting The Smiths to what I suppose are their own styles. “There is a Light That Never Goes Out” (performed by Trespassers William) has a subtle alt-country vibe and is even more sad than the original. “Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others” by Chikita Violenta has a really cool shoegaze goes heavy electronica vibe, a completely different way of hearing that song. And Mike Viola & The Section Quartet’s version of “How Soon Is Now?” is really haunting, the music completely on strings: violin, cello, etc. and takes an amazing song (one of my favorites by The Smiths) and, while not making it better (that would be impossible), adds some lushness that only an orchestral arrangement can do. I’m on the fence about one of my other Smiths faves, “What Difference Does It Make” by Joy Zipper who have made the song really slow and somehow super-creepy and surreal, but I’m leaning toward liking it. I also quite like the noisy and dense interpretation of “Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard this Before” by The Rest, who do an admirable job with Morrissey’s lyrical calisthenics. I’m not overly fond of Tanya Donnelly’s whispery vocals on “Shoplifters of the World Unite” but the acoustic guitar, violin solo and harmonies are alright (actually I think I have heard of Tanya Donnelly but I’ve never listened to her music). I don’t care for “Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me” by Dala at all, total yawn-fest, ie if I heard this at a coffee shop performance - its perfect venue - I’d be face-down snoring in my cappuccino.

A playlist for my current party: 4 idiots + their honorary cult grandma, four with new names and one with someone else’s--god I love them. they requested a playlist breakdown so i’ve placed it under a cut for brevity. I’m always soft for making fan content for the campaigns I’m in tbh.
Alice: an elf-turned half-orc after a reincarnate spell went awry, her wild magic caused her marriage to fall apart when she accidentally burned down her home. She’s looking for control over the magic that is ruining her life.
Remmy: a man of many names, Remmy is an aasimar cleric with more secrets than even the other party members are aware of. He’s untrusting and full of fear, but the party gets him to open up--against his better judgment.
Gadao: an earth genasi from an isolated monastery, he’s looking for an identity of his own after realizing he may not be an incarnation of an ancestral spirit after all. Looking for his place in the world, the party’s fast-paced life contrasts with his steady nature.
Leap: an elderly tiefling ranger, she grew up in a cult of pain and left it only by good fortune. Her taste for adventure--and a need for closure--keep her on the road, though she looks forward to seeing her family again.
Blue: an aarakocra bard, Blue awoke with no memory and promptly joined a shady merchant vessel as a good-luck musician. They’re always down to fight, curious, and ready to hoard as many items as they can get their hands on.
Anger | Sleeping at Last
I love the way this song opens, the energy it has. Favorite lyrics are “it all spills out/reckless but honest words leave my mouth,” which maybe speaks to my love of intra-party conflict… but I also have a soft spot for “and suddenly I’m someone that prays/last-minute man of faith” given the campaign’s attention to the divine. I’ve really loved leaning into that. It feels like this song has threads that connect to every character.
Hellfire | Barns Courtney
God, I love the chorus to this song. I feel that in this party, Leap and Remmy have the strongest links in these lyrics, between Leap’s simmering fury at her cult and Remmy’s...everything. There’s a period of the song that isn’t quite an instrumental, but has sort of mangled lyrics/rap, and though I can’t quite make it out, one bit sounds like “roll the dice” -- a fun nod to D&D as a whole and the risk-takers among the party.
Blood I Bled | The Staves
My favorite lyric here is “raise your banners and ride to war/throwing ‘round your name.” This song feels like a challenge to the world, suitable for a group of adventurers just forming a party. The singers and songwriters mention the song as one of “no, I won’t take this bullshit,” and that strong message really speaks to the PCs.
Hustler | Zayde Wølf
Hustler is all about coming out on top, and y’all are “turning up the heat” all the time. “Looking at the city like I already own it” feels like a foreshadowing moment to me; one day, when you all are level 10, 15, 20, you might reach an unmatchable power, if you live long enough to see it.
Homemade Dynamite | Lorde
I chose this song for the absolute clusterfuck D&D parties can be. “Don’t know you super well/but I think that you might be the same as me/Behave abnormally” encapsulates something really funny about party members getting to know each other and start to trust each other, even when the rule might still be “I’ll give you my best side, tell you all my best lies,” and your secrets and private problems haven’t yet come to light.
Nervous | X Ambassadors
The chorus of foreboding in “cause what comes up must come down”  is, how do I put this? Iconique. I think this song especially fits Leap and Alice, both of whom are aware of how quickly things can go awry but put a cheerful face on their own worries. Even when nothing’s wrong (“and I can’t complain, it’s amazing”) they know things could go south quickly.
An Act of Kindness | Bastille
This song best fits Leap and Gadao’s relationship, especially when they met. “Oh I got a feeling this will shake me down/Oh I’m kind of hoping this will turn me round” seems to speak directly to Gadao pulling Leap away from the cult and giving her the opportunity to be better than she was. On another level, the party’s bonds are born from acts of kindness and friendship--Remmy buying lorebooks for Alice, Leap making tea, Gadao stepping in to defend the party from the mimic.
Everybody Wants to Rule the World | Lorde
Despite the name, this has something for everyone, I think. “Turn your back on Mother Nature” suits Alice’s vendetta against the Forest Father, “Help me make the most of freedom/and of pleasure” fits Blue’s brand of hedonism, “It’s my own remorse” echoes Leap’s regrets. Gadao alone doesn’t quite fit in here...unless… >:)
Kicks | Barns Courtney
This is a Blue song! “I’ll show you how to live for free” the artist sings, and Blue’s freewheeling lifestyle seeking “kicks” matches this energy really well. If Blue is “a wild one” “singing in the midnight street,” they’re getting their kicks with this party for sure. Blue lives without being tied down, theoretically limitless.
Hail to the Victor | Thirty Seconds to Mars
This song is about Leap, no question. “Another life, another love/another kill, another drug” fits into Leap’s two lives, one in the cult and one out of it. And in this new mission against Babylon Lionel, she’s seeking a revenge of her own, though it’s one against her childhood more than her actual enemy.
I’m a Wanted Man | Royal Deluxe
Remmy “would kill again to keep from doing time,” without a doubt, so this one’s for him. Constantly warning he’s trouble for his friends, saying that “you should never ever trust my kind” isn’t too far off. Like Remmy, this song is edgy, but with a hesitant moment of emo-ness that makes the performance of darkness something a little more genuine.
Big God | Florence and the Machine
Alice is not a faithful woman, but she’s unfortunately entangled in some religious nonsense she hates. At the same time, I feel lyrics like “you’ll always be my favorite ghost” refer best to Alice’s fraught relationship with her wife. My favorite line here is “Sometimes I think it’s getting better/and then it gets much worse,” which is essentially Alice’s experience of her wild magic. Deep down, she might even be drawn to the magic’s chaos, but she can’t help but resent what it’s taking away from her.
Wisdom, Justice, and Love | Linkin Park
This one’s for Gadao. It starts off so peaceful and hopeful, the instrumentals overlaid with a speech by Martin Luther King, Jr. But as he starts to list the evils of the world, King’s voice, so steady and confident, is warped. Gadao’s own faith experience becomes warped by the power games of the people around him, and even as he’s seeking “wisdom, justice, and love,” he can’t escape the effects of materialism and violence around him.
Icarus | Bastille
Some folks live steady lives, but not these people. Adventurer’s lives tend to burn bright, hot, and short. From Leap’s perspective, most of the party is made of kids who don’t know the world yet. Are they “digging their own grave,” “too close to the sun?” Despite their ride-or-die commitments, Leap can see all of you risking yourselves--and for what? Who do you want to be, at the end of it all? A wife and mason? A sage and monk? Or do you want greater things than that?
Losing My Religion | Dia Frampton
I can hear so much of Remmy’s opinions in this song, saying “I’m choosing my confessions, trying to keep an eye on you” but realizing, over and over again: “Oh no, I’ve said too much.” As he tries to keep up his own facades, Gadao and Leap’s own faith collides with the beliefs of a cult leader and Alice struggles with a religion she doesn’t care for at all.
Start a War | Klergy and Valerie Broussard
Like Hail to the Victor, this song is all about Leap’s conflict with the cult of Loviatar and the Mother of Martyrs. Even though the Loviatar cult might be gone, the spirit lives on. My favorite line for Leap here is “bang, shots fired/pain is what you desire,” for the decision to challenge Babs to a one-on-one fight. But is it Babs who is starting this war, or Leap?
Friction | Imagine Dragons
This one kind of gives me Gadao vibes with the lyrics “when you’ve made it/won’t you tell me what to do?” After all that pressure to fulfill the expectations of other people, he has to get out of the middle and move on, maybe even become someone new. Key line is “why can’t you let go/like a bird in the snow/this is no place to build your home,” reminding Gadao that he doesn’t have a place in this world. Not yet.
Transcendental Youth | the mountain goats
“Sing, sing for ourselves alone,” sings John Darnielle, and maybe that’s what makes this feel so much like Blue. Maybe it’s the lyric, “cedar smudge our headbands/and take to the skies/soar ever upwards,” calling to Blue’s dislocation from time and place, flying away from their problems. Blue doesn’t remember their childhood, and has no idea how old they are. Even if they did know, their lifespan is short. They live every day like the halcyon days of youth, footloose and fancy-free indeed.
Champion | Barns Courtney
I swear this is the last Barns Courtney song. But this song is the resilience of coming through fights and perils and dangers. My favorite lyric is “Oh, Lord, save my soul/take my pain and turn it into gold” which, incidentally, is exactly what happens when you level up. The party’s struggles translate to strength, to influence, to skill, and even riches.
In the Woods Somewhere | Hozier
On the one hand, this could be about any combat in the dark woods at night (*cough*, Remmy killing that dragonborn, *cough*). But more importantly, this song is about Alice. She struggles with a power she doesn’t understand, with something’s eyes on her that she can’t fight. The best she can do is run from the danger and try to survive it. Whatever eyes are watching her now, Alice better take care. Favorite line? “I clutched my life/and wished it kept/my dearest love/I’m not done yet.”
Natural | Imagine Dragons
Natural tells the party one way of surviving. The line “you gotta be so cold/to make it in this world” suits Remmy’s outlook so well, the one he pushes at the rest of the party. The line “rather be the hunter than the prey” speaks well to Blue’s tactics--preferring to act from above. Alice and Leap know better than anyone that “nothing ever comes without a consequence or cost,” and Gadao may be the only one ‘holding the line’ against a harder heart. Another song with bits and pieces associated with everyone.
Dead Hearts | Stars
There isn’t a specific lyric here that jumps out at me, no line that tells me who this song is for. This is the song for the ones who die--those who have, and who will. We might not be there yet, but this is a song for acknowledging the sacrifice of your friends and allies. The knowledge that you knew them once, and in some ways, their ghost stays with you. Or maybe they’re revived, or reincarnated, but there’s always something a little different.
The Projectionist | Sleeping at Last
Eventually the session ends, and the story closes, and the lights come up. “We’re leaving our shadows behind us now/we’re leaving, we’re leaving it all behind for now,” Ryan O’Neill sings. We’re putting on costumes, telling a story for each other, and maybe the game ends every time, but maybe it makes us brave. I’d like to think so.
