Warner Bros Discovery currently has an over 60% Probability of Bankruptcy.

I honestly am not sure if this is good or bad for the SPN revival. On the one hand, WB is NOT going to want to spend money on such a niche IP (that will really mostly only draw ppl who were already fans) if they are in such dire straits financially. On the other hand, they could bring in money by selling the IP to another studio who would obviously then want to actually do something with it since they spent money on it. But that also depends on another studio or streaming service wanting to do something with it which will be tougher. Netflix would make sense since they currently have SPN for streaming, except they will be losing their streaming rights at the end of 2025. A revival wouldn't even be released until then so why would Netflix want to put money into a revival of show that will, at that time, be streaming on a competitor (most likely Max since it will revert back to WB). Amazon is a possibility since both Jensen and Kripke are there (especially if they want to bring Kripke on for it) and Kripke seems to have some sway over there. But again, unless they buy the rights to SPN to stream on their platform, why would they want to make a show that will inadvertently benefit their competitor?

[full disclosure, I sent this same ask to someone else as well, I'm not trying to spam people with it, I just wanted both your opinions!]

I went cross eyed reading the article, it looks like it was written by an A.I, which is not out of the realm of possibility given how many "journalists" are fired and Sports Illustrated was busted for using AI to write articles.

It really does not take much to avoid bankruptcy. Usually when a company is going to go under, the signs of it are obvious inaction for a long time and it inevitably dooms the business. The prime reason why WBD is not going broke is because they took immediate actions after the merger. What happens is the profitable parts of the business stays, while losses are either "turned around" or the business gets eliminated. Sometimes things like streaming subscribers will drop a quarter or two. Maybe a movie or two never gets released. But housecleaning is far more important than anything right now so that money is not wasted. The result is growing cash flow without losing much of the business.

Remember what I've said that cash flow is king? You can run a non-profitable company indefinitely with positive cash flow, but run a profitable company into the ground without cash flow. AT&T generated next to no cash flow. WBD exists for the very purpose of dismantling the legacy Time Warner conglomerate, that was the intention when AT&T sold it to Zaslav. It’s why they removed HBO from the name of Max. His job is to clean up its balance sheets, prepare its parts for sale, and pay himself handsomely in tune of $200 million last year. I begrudgingly admire Zaslav’s sticking with his controversial strategy, which saw other studios eventually following that same strategy.

By 2023, WBD paid off $12 billion in debt. That was a demonstration of faith by management in the turnaround efforts or else they would have kept the cash "just in case." The interest on the debt alone is eating $2 to $3 billion in free cash flow. Thats a lot of free growth in their bottom line when debt is paid down. Against all odds, WBD's streaming service HBO Max (and then just Max) is creating most of the cash flow improvement with $5 billion in cash flow. Advertising is growing in this segment at a robust pace. That said, the content decline for third-party licensing will have implications now that the strike is over and WBD has to start spending money on new contents on their prized IPs i.e. Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, DC, etc.

For niche IPs like Supernatural, I see 50% chance of WBD still licensing it to Netflix because third-party licensing is the new king. WBD will also offload low-performing shows in the same bundle with higher-performing Supernatural because it will allow WBD to continue their 'creative accounting' to avoid paying residuals to low-tier actors. Then I can see Netflix doing what they did with Gilmore Girls and produce a revival limited series for Supernatural, which will increase viewership for the OG SPN and continue to help retain subscribers.

On the other hand, WBD is rebooting every niche IP under the sun and I'm pretty certain they will make the same attempt with Supernatural. The strike is over and WBD need to make new contents to attract back subscribers they lost over two quarters during the strike. When SPN goes back to Max in 2025, an announcement of a reboot/revival will mean free marketing from devoted fans and ensure continual interest and viewership of the OG SPN.

I have a couple of burning questions about The Winchesters and I figured I'd ask someone who knows the field and might have given this some thought already (thank you for your time!): 1) Do you think it's getting 13 episodes or 18-20?; 2) When can we expect to know who else's writing? do you expect more SPN alumns or all/mostly 'newbies'?

This is a harder answer than you probably expected. Not from not knowing, just complexity.

If this were regular CW, hands down. Several years running, full seasons, the short order extended only a few episodes into air.

But this isn't the normal CW.

Not only did they genocide their properties during renewal, now they're coming for summer shows not moved to fall. Tom Swift JUST GOT ORDERED. It didn't even finish its SHORT ORDER. And it got cancelled.

And by CBS, 9PM, Summer standards?

...Tom Swift was actually doing okay. Like timeslot equivalent of Walker, I just guess they projected it to have its normal audience loss and drop under that bar, which seems to be by which everything else was cancelled.

*If* this is being determined by ratings, I still see the Winchesters as a mix of stepping stone and accordion show.

CW is in transition. WB is. The whole fucking industry is, with Disney saying they should have fiscally sustainable streaming by 2026, and everyone figuring out their methods and market dominance along similar streaming roads, just... not Disney.

But Jensen explicitly cited HBO Max, not CW, for an SPN revival, which seems pointed. As long as there seems to be general activity and support, the reunion has PROBABLY already been talked about as straight to HBO Max.

That leaves Winchesters as a property expanding the franchise while it's developed, while Max figures budget and the new digital world out, and while Nexstar massacres things gradually into your granny's favorite network.

The show premise isn't built to be sustainably infinite. It can be told in 10 episodes, or it can be spread out and immersive for a few seasons, but not infinite.

Just enough to bend there.

I have a feeling The Winchesters is going to be on air exactly as long as is needed to make that a Max Exclusive, and build out branding for WB -- something they are STRUGGLING WITH right now-- franchises. DC is a mess, Rowling is [gestures vaguely at] and those are diminishing returns, and so on. So, say, the show runs 2-3 seasons then closes up shop, but gets imported to the 2025~ max library, along with all spn, while the new reunion whatever releases.

Boom.

But as for season length? Whatever it takes to work with Nexstar and we don't know their stipulations. We know CBS and WB each own 12.5% of the network, which probably basically accounts to space share, and still mostly leaves primetime available, but on stricter ratings standards.

Provided it turns out as expected, my GUESS is that whatever short order amount (10-13) was ordered will probably be what we get this year. If we do get an extended order, it'll still turn up short, like 16-18 episodes, because GK debuts early 2023, and it's basically exchanged time/space, so whatever they have probably won't run through May or whatever.

But this lets WB and CBS size up properties and bank on their new earners that tick BOTH boxes successfully--perform enough for nexstar live but also build out their streamers.

Unless Nexstar starts terminating its scripted TV Fall 2023, we'll probably get a full season that year.

CBS will be considering similar with Windy for Paramount+, which they already tried to bring Yellowstone into with some upset when it was only digital, but the compromise is eventual, leaving Walker and Windy competing on platform for the same audience on a much lower budget being doubled over for them by the parent company--Windy's likely to bite ratings dust, Walker may hang in a few years. Maybe. It looks like it's scratching the line. But I'm struggling to figure out where its final digital home will be. It won't be Max forever. And if it ends up off classic air, would CBS bother to bankroll it for Paramount+? unlikely.

Some further information, according to "sources say" in this THR article about Berlanti's new deal, CW Nexstar expects to have "fewer than 5" scripted originals per season going forward. Like some of us have already been pointing out, they have to be profitable, and the overspending era is over. Fewer shows, made more economically. Not ending the scripted originals. So if THR's "sources" are correct, less than 5 scripted shows total starting 2023-2024.

shows still around from the 2022-2023 slate: 6 WB: AA, AAH, KF, TW (spn), S&L (dc), GK (dc) 2 Paramount: Walker and Windy

And from everything I've read, CW isn't going to keep all its eggs in just the WB and CBS basket, and those studios are about to divest their remaining percentage shares. Just throwing out some numbers here, say CW keeps 2 from the existing WB/CBS slate, plus 2 (?) new shows from other studios. That's keeping 2 out of 8. Or 3 existing slate? and 1 new show?

Either way. The survival rate from the 8 remaining is going to be very lean.

While I’m sure he still gets anxious to sing in front of everyone he still gets up there and does. He did amazing and I hope I get to see it live someday. Btw the Jensen blep is my favorite!!

logging on November 5, 2023 with my own confession to Dean Winchester

anyway the first time I realized I could see myself growing up to be a man was when I saw a middle aged guy in a leather jacket and jeans at the mall. no relation as I don't know I'd even started spn then but hilarious that my initial transgender fantasy was wanting the Dean Winchester Aesthetic

I realized there are multiple voices in my head the first time when I started spn. Again, no real relation to the show but I remember being like "oh this one main voice in my head sounds EXACTLY like Dean Winchester" like same vocal tone and similar attitude and all.

my first real cosplay was as fem!Sam as inspired by my buddy who was fem!Dean which is. yeah. (iykyk)

ALSO pretty sure my first fanfics to read (and first published on AO3) and first time crying over a fictional character were all spn so like. do with that what you will

Dean Winchester is also who got me into AC/DC and my gateway into music in general which is like 1/3 of my personality today

I was initially a Dean girl for s1 and my feelings about him have just evolved since then

spn and Dean specifically found me through a lot of firsts. I am Sam-coded all the way but there is a soft spot in my heart of Dean always and forever
