A Year In Review: 2022 Writing

So I’m weeks behind the usual end-of-year memes, but whatever. The past year has not been too great, although good things happened too. Anyway, here’s how it compares in terms of writing: 2019 | 2020 | 2021 |

Writing

I wrote a measly 7600w for A Different Kind of Courage, making 2022 the... third (?) year in a row when I’ve been planning to finish the fic, but then life happens and everything flies out the window. But those were quite solid three chapters and I’m rather proud of them, as the story reached the crash-and-burn end point of an arc. It was terribly satisfying to write. So many things coming finally together, mmm.

In the beginning of last year I randomly started Poludnica / Midday Shadows, a Shadow & Bones fanfic, of all things, and got some 16k words in before Russia’s war in Ukraine made me kinda unwilling to continue writing in a setting/aesthetic based on romanticized Tsarist Russia. But it was very fun while the inspiration lasted and maybe someday I’ll pick it back up.

I also wrote a small ‘Tasertricks in Thedas AU’ oneshot Dancing In the Ruin; a tiny M!Lavellan/Josie drabble Air; a similarly tiny Matt/Elektra ficlet Trade it all in for a lifetime of smelling your skin; and translated two fics: People Caught in a Storm (American Gods) by @spaceinthecage and Leave Barefoot (The Punisher) by She is Hale, which is a prose poem and I’m pretty proud of that one too :)

So that’s 38,600 words writing and 2145w translation.

Somehow, I apparently have had less productive years. (how...??)

@serial-chillr is still as awesome as ever, she knows the craft, and she also just holds my hand when I haven’t posted anything in a while and suddenly start doubting every single damn thing I know about English grammar XD

Progress

I think Poludnica was the most important learning exercise, as I cut myself some slack and just let myself get some writing done. So there’s some time-jumping, cutting of boring scenes I didn’t want to write, there’s short chapters, there’s more summaries and less descriptions than usual, etc. But apparently the pacing still works okay. So yeah, I guess I now have experience consciously writing an average fic just for fun :D

I also discovered that prose poems are a thing, and that I love them. There should be more of them.

Community

I’ve kinda drifted away from DA and The Hobbit; blazed through Shadow & Bone, and then @sausagesquirrel dragged me into the Daredevil/The Punisher fandom. So I’m making some new friends like @youwouldneverbreakthechain​  and appreciating the ones I’ve known for years, like the excellent @cafeleningrad, @serial-chillr, @vyrridiana, @dafan7711, and other pocket friends (and @dorianpink came back to tumblr!!) ♥

Comments

Unexpectedly many, on a fic I didn’t give much of a damn about :D So fandom is weird.

But also I’m so impressed by Serial and Squirrel and @valla-valla who have kept reading my fics even in new fandoms: you are so lovely, and your support means a lot to me ♥

2023

Honestly, I just want to finish something by this point lol. I’m hoping to have more free time this year, but I think that, for a while, at least, if I’ll be writing anything, it will be behind the scenes until I’m sure I can carry on. I really don’t want to update and then disappear again.

So that’s the most important plan. Sort out this inconvenience called depression, and fall in love with writing again :)

Satisfied with her nest of blankets and fortress of pillows, Darcy looked up at her movie buddy and announced, “Let the spooning commence.”

Loki's dark brows furrowed. “What does cutlery have to do with cinema?”

Darcy rolled her eyes and made hugging gestures. "You know."

Loki stared at her with a blank face and dead panned, “you're inferring that on Midgard that a spoon is associated with an intimate embrace?”

Darcy nodded, holding her arms up and looking expectantly at Loki, who put his hands on his hips and looked to the ceiling, probably trying to find some patience.

Advent Thief, Advent Drabble 1

Number one drabble for the tasertricks advent! Can be read alone but is based on my story ‘Trust’. 

- - -  ‘LOKI!’ Darcy yelled when she found her advent calendar completely demolished.

‘You called?’ Loki asked as he popped his head round the door.

‘Why the hell have you eaten all my chocolates?’ She folded her arms over her chest.

‘How do you know it was me?’ Loki asked innocently as he walked into her room.

‘Because you’re the only one who poofs into my room unannounced.’

‘Oh.’

‘You’ve got your own, why did you eat mine?’

‘Because mine was finished and I had a sweet craving.’ Loki said as if it was the most obvious reason in the world and a totally acceptable thing to do.

‘It’s only the fourth. You are not supposed to eat them ALL in one go! The whole idea of an advent calendar is you open the doors one day at a time, in accordance with the numbers. Right up till Christmas day, so it’s a nice treat every day of the month until THE BEST day of the month!’

Loki pondered for a moment. ‘Ah, is that why number twenty-five was bigger than the rest?’

‘You ass!’ Darcy threw the empty advent at his face, making him chuckle.

That evening when Darcy went back to her room, she was surprised to see an advent calendar waiting for her on her pillow with a note on top just saying Sorry x

She picked it up and laughed with an eye roll when she saw the doors up to number four were already opened and gone. But it was the thought that counts, she thought with a shrug as she quickly opened number four and wolfed it down.

"Why is it called Netflix and chill," Loki wondered out loud, "when it is so warm under these blankets?"

Darcy snuggled up closer as they continued to binge The Witcher on the flat screen tv. "Ya know. Because you chill. Be relaxed."

Loki snorted and gestured to the screen. "As if I could relax whilst watching that oaf manhandle a broadsword thus."

Darcy looked from the screen to Loki and back again. "You have some things in common with him. Broodiness. Stubborn chin. Strange penchant for leather."

In a flash, Loki had her boxed in, his warm breath caressing her cheek. "Have competition, do I?"

Darcy smiled. "As if."

"Even so," he purred. "I had better be sure it's me you wish to ah, Netflix and chill with." He dipped those clever fingers down under the seam of her panties, finding her wet and wanting. "For me, kitten?"

"Always," she panted as he stroked. Her own hands wound up to the buttons on his jeans - Loki killed it in denim - and he fell, hot and hard and ready, into her greedy palms. She snapped a sultry look up to him before sliding down his body. "Now, why don't I show you how I'd handle a broadsword."

“Is that what I think it is?”

1. The first thing Darcy felt was heavy. As her brain swam slowly back from the land of pleasant-dozy-dreams-you-can’t-quite-remember-when-you-wake-up, she had a distinct impression of warm weight, stretched across her shoulders and curving around her waist.

Which, of course, was interesting—considering the fact that she’d definitely fallen asleep with only a light fleece blanket. A light fleece blanket she currently felt tangled up somewhere around her legs. 

Darcy cracked an eye open. She couldn’t move much, pinned down as she was—but when she squirmed around, a distinct metallic gleam greeted her. Or rather: the gleam of a distinctly metallic arm greeted her.

Iiiiinteresting.

2.

Darcy hurtled around the corner, and probably would have been thoroughly pancaked or gone flying, if Steve hadn’t grabbed her first. Finding herself smashed against a couple hundred lbs of Supersoldier certainly wasn’t a novel experience (though she certainly could have written a couple novels about her experiences, *cough* fondue *cought*), but the sight that greeted her when she looked down was.

“Is that—“

“Yes!” Steve blurted, face the color of the rising sun. It was a good look on him.

“My taser? On a shirt?” 

Steve was still blushing, but now his smirk had edged into snarky territory. “Well, you’ve got the shield on yours…and the Secret Santa party’s tonight….All’s Fair In Love and War and merchandise branding?”

“You absolute Troll!” Darcy crowed, and kissed him.

3.

“So? What do you think?”

“What do I think???” Darcy gave the costume—suspended magically in mid-air—a full 360. Twice. “I think you’re a mad genius and this is an excellent plan.”

Loki grinned in a decidedly feline way. It was slightly unsettling, since Loki was currently glamoured to look like Darcy, and she was fairly certain her face didn’t normally do that. Still, what did she expect from a shapeshifter SO?

Darcy fingered the replica horns on the costume Loki had produced for her. “So when I put it on—”

“You’ll look and sound like me,” Loki said, still smiling like a cat who got the cream. “Gender presentation optional.”

Darcy squealed. Best. Couple’s costume. Ever!

Darcyland Drabble Race: Spirit in the Sky

“Are we getting out of this?” Darcy yelled as Bucky grabbed onto the fabric of her tac jacket and pulled her back around a corner with him.  “Like, shit usually looks bad, but this shit looks BAD.”

“Doll, would I ever steer you wrong?” he asked.  “Duck!”

She obligingly ducked, hearing the whiz and ping as a spray off bullets hit the building above their heads.  “I’m not doubting you, but like...I don’t really want to die yet.”

His lips tightened as he loaded another clip into his rifle.  “Nobody is dying today.  Least of all you.  Now, what’s the plan?”

“Stay low, stay alert, shoot the hell out the bad guys,” she replied, and he nodded.

“Ready?”

“I mean, only because I know that if we do die, we are both going straight to Valhalla.  Thor promised.”  She glared furiously at the approaching alien skiff, and muttered, “they better fucking have donuts up there.”

Tasertricks

“So.  This is Valhalla.  It’s uh…”  Darcy glanced around at all the weird buildings that looked like pipe organs, and the flying horses.  “...very gold.  And equestrian.  Are those even horses?”

“Pegasi,” Loki replied shortly.  “Ridiculous to have them just loose all over the place in this manner.”

“I’m sorry but are you criticizing Valhalla for having a sky full of flying horses?  I thought you and horses had like...a thing.”

His face got that pinched look that meant he was seconds away from turning her hair green.  “We have been over this many times, mortal.  I did not father a horse, no matter what that wretched viking bard said.”

“So that eight legged horse I saw in the Asgard stables was what?  A figment of my imagination?”

“Your life is about to become a figment of your imagination,” he retorted.

Darcy grinned.  “Nice try, goat-boy, but I’m already dead.”

Darcy wasn’t amused at Loki lately. Well…the sex still great but the attention…, the attention had been lacking lately. Since Loki found about Among Us in the phone apps, he’s been engrossed in that game. His phone has been the only thing that keeps him occupied. Early in the morning, after breakfast, in the meeting, at dinner, and even after having sex, Loki always glued to his smartphone for none other than playing that game. She’s almost sure that Tony complained about it during one of the missions.

Loki usually didn't mind tagging along when Darcy needed extra input in choosing clothing. Not that she always shops here and there but a girl sometimes needed extra attention.

“Ugh…,” Darcy grunted at her reflection in the mirror. She likes the look of the black lace plunge teddy on her body but she needed some input.

She fished out her phone and took a selfie. When she looked in the gallery folder, only her face and half of her upper body were captured by the camera.

Feeling a little bit naughty, she took a non-selfie picture using the floor-length floor mirror inside the fitting room. She took several pics with different poses.

Slightly opened the fitting room door, her blue eyes roamed to the chair outside. “Wanda.” The scarlet witch switched her green eyes from her phone screen to Darcy.

“Hey Darce, what’s up?”

“Can you choose like five lingerie for me? Like whatever you found sexy and you know, risqué.”

Wanda's eyes darted to the left when suddenly Natasha appeared in front of Darcy's fitting room. “I might have a good selection for you Lewis.” Her green eyes sparkled as she strolled away.

Darcy looked at Wanda and Wanda replied to her with a shrugged of her shoulder.

Not long after that, the black widow came back to the fitting room section with a pile of lingerie. “Try this lewis.”

“O—ok!”

The first one was a sheer mesh teddy in black. It has an embroidered flower on the cup, and when Darcy turns back, she can see her ass cheeks clearly. She took several pictures with that lingerie.

She did that with the second, third, and fourth lingerie. All of them were exquisite and sexy. Of course, Darcy spent as much time as she could to pose and snap several provocative pictures of herself.

When Darcy picked up the last lingerie she was shocked, “holy shit! Oh...my...God!”

Darcy tried the last piece Natasha gave her. The fabric was a green soft lace with some ruffle and cute pattern. However, it’s basically shocking to her since she can see her pink nipple as the cups only supported her under the breast, like a corset. It’s also crotchless.

“I see you liking it,” Natasha yelled from outside.

“Hell yeah!” I mean this is a whole new level of risqué.” She replied enthusiastically to the Black Widow.

After she finished taking pictures of the last lingerie, Darcy exited the fitting room with her usual non-official S.H.I.E.L.D/Jane assistant office attire. Wanda and Natasha sat on the plush red chair.

“So did you like it?” The red hair asked

Darcy hooded and sat in the middle. “I need to send Loliball the pictures. He’s been ignoring me lately.” She pouted.

“You should. Come on, just send it to him right now.”

As per direction by Natasha, Darcy sent all the photos chronologically from the more subtle one to the revealing and riskier one.

Loki usually responds quite late if she sends a text to him but now her inbox has exploded with Loki’s comment. And when the last three pictures were shown as read , for the first time since Monday Loki called her. Darcy looked at Natasha and Wanda. Natasha gave at her a knowing smirk.

“Pet— Darcy, where are you?” Loki's tone sounds lower than usual. There’s a twinge of something animalistic about it.

“Told ya I was going to a store today.”

“Stay where you are. Be right there in a minute.” And with that Loki ended the calls.

Darcy smiled triumphantly. She’s looking forward to what’s gonna happen with her and that lingerie.
