In Untamed only, the Wen Qing rescue by Jiang Cheng could parallel the Lan Furen situation. She could be saved by being taken in by the sect leader, but she would be isolated, her family lost to her. Like, its more meta then textual but Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji have no mention of their mothers family. Lan furen presumably agreed while Wen Qing walked away. Lan furen lived a long time with her children taken away to be raised without her, Wen Qing dies right away with Wen Yuan taken to be raised by those same strangers.
Huh.... I never looked at it that way, but yeah you're right! On some level it is similar!
And then my mind promptly poofed up an alternative scenario if JIang Cheng also did what Qingheng-jun had done.
(tw for noncon? but really there's no noncon, people just think there is)
~~~
Jiang Cheng was audacious only once in his entire life.
When Wen Qing turned to leave that day in Qishan's dungeon, the comb she gave back to him abandoned on the stone bench between them, Jiang Cheng crossed his heart and decided that attempt the impossible meant sometimes one had to act now and beg for forgiveness later.
Whether the forgiveness he sought had to come from his deceased parents, the entire Jiang Clan past and present, or Wen Qing herself...well...he had the rest of his life to figure it out.
His hand came down on her without hesitation, blunt force striking her squarely where her neck met her shoulder, and she dropped bonelessly into his arms, her future forever changed.
↠↠↠
When Jiang Cheng was a boy, before Wei Wuxian arrived, he had heard of a story.
He was very young then, and Madam Lan had been a nebulous figure, a subject of whispers and gossip, about which very few knew anything concrete. When she died, the older servants at Lotus Pier, unaware that listening ears were just around the corner, had tsked and sighed at her short wasted life. Locked away in a house. Separated from her children.
Well at least her husband loved her.
He did, though? How would anyone know.
Or wanted her, at least.
Whatever is wrong with the young masters of this generation and their poorly chosen women! Either loved but locked up or free but miserable nonetheless. What is the state of this world?!
Jiang Cheng didn't understand then.
In time, he would.
↠↠↠
After she was discovered in the dungeon, Wen Qing woke up in Jiang Wanyin's bed, wearing not a stitch but a bandage around her nape, and discovered herself in the middle of Sunshot Campaign's battle camp. From the two female disciples that had brought her new periwinkle uniforms to change into with barely concealed sneers, Wen Qing learned the reason behind her wretched state. About two dozen disciples of various sects had seen Jiang Wanyin carry her in the previous night and emerge the next morning adjusting his robes in a way that required very little explanation.
It was not that she didn't try to escape. She did.
Where do you think you're going, pretty thing? A Jin disciple interscepted her. They all said that Wei Wuxian was shameless, but seems like shamelessness runs in the family. Still, gotta hand it to him, Jiang Wanyin has good taste.
The disciple grabbed her around the middle while a couple of his sect brothers laughed at her struggle. Does he share? Do you know? He should, it's a virture after all.
Their malicious laughter had turned to yelps of pain when Zidian whipped them three feet into the air and back by a yard.
"Don't touch what it isn't yours."
Sandu's gleaming tip tapped the Jin disciple lightly on the shoulder thrice, mockingly polite in its gentleness. The man released her, all too aware of the distance between his jugular and the sword's edge.
More people gathered at the sound of commotion, coming together with shared morbid curiosity and judging eyes.
Nie Mingjue was there. Lan Wangji right behind him, looking ready to draw his sword and uphold justice.
"Your little tart was running away." Scoffed the Jin disciple. "I was just teasing her. No foul, no harm."
"Is that so?"
And then in front everyone, Jiang Wanyin grabbed her by the hair and reeled her in to press his lips against hers, his other hand unfriendly and uninhitibted. Just as quickly, he detached his mouth from her, sneering at the onlookers before chasing the exposed skin of her neck yanked to one side, and bit down hard enough to draw blood.
Of course she screamed.
"A-Cheng, that's enough."
The others parted for his sister to come through. Jiang Yanli gazed blandly at her little brother and the girl thrashing in his arms, offered no words of admonishment, but merely said, "Go inside if that's what you want to do."
Jiang Cheng threw Wen Qing over his shoulder like a sack of grains without further prompts.
It's what she deserves, that wretched little bitch, Wen Ruohan's witch doctor, the whispers followed them like shadows, but no one raised a hand to Wen Qing again.
As the old saying goes: one would have to check with the master, even if it were only to beat a dog.
(Except: "You know what the world will think of you. What she will think of you." "I know, but...thank you for helping me, A-jie." "Don't thank me, didi, not when you're asking me to help you hurt yourself.")
↠↠↠
It's not that Wen Qing didn't try to kill him either. She couldn't.
Her cultivation was sealed. Semi-permanently. That was what was under the bandage. At the base of her nape, he had carved a sealing rune into her skin, and the only way to reverse it is to carve the counter sigil on her sternum.
Later, she would learn that this was a secret Lan technique, given to Jiang Wanyin by Old Man Lan himself. She could only guess what he must've said to convince the pedantic old man to hand over his family's protected secret.
(He had said this: "I love her, Grandmaster Lan, please!" "You are a preposterous boy, Jiang-gongzi." "I love her, as your brother loved your sister-in-law!" "You-" "I've heard of the stories, I don't know how much is true. Only...Wen Qing is innocent! Prideful yes, but innocent! Help me. Please. I will do anything in return.")
After her failed escape and that awful display in front of the whole camp, Jiang Wangyin never showed his face to her again. The Jiangs installed her in her own tent with confinement talismens to prevent her from further attempts. Every night, two disciples came to give her (or force feed her if she refused) a concoction of some sort, which rendered her unconscious within minutes and unrousable until dawn.
She could lie to herself and say she hadn't a clue what happened within those hours, but the fact she always awakened in some state of undress and dishevel the next morning, and the fact that it was undisbutedly known amongst the disciples - Jiang or otherwise - that Jiang Wanyin visited her nightly whenever he wasn't out fighting, narrowed the possibilities down to a singular conclusion.
In the maelstrom of her nightmare, it didn't occur her to wonder why he never came to her during the day.
(The truth was this: Lan Xichen was sympathetic, "Your cultivation is derived from water, hers from fire. A seal fused with your cultivation without some kind of...buffer will inevitably harm her in the long run, erode through her golden core until she is permanently damaged. Give this tonic to her everynight. Without fail.")
(But also this: "Why must we continue this farce, A-Cheng, just tell her the truth! Why must you make her believe that you -" "I own her, but do not love her. I am her master, not her lover. She is damaged goods, worthless even as a leverage. That's the only way the others will leave her alone." "A-Cheng, you don't have to do this -" "I do. I do have to....is there any word on Wen Ning? Have we found him?" )
↠↠↠
Then one morning, about a month in, Wen Qing woke to the sound of thunder and rain and realized she wasn't alone. Even with her cultivation sealed she could feel another presence in the tent. Seconds later, Jiang Wanyin emerged from behind the trifold, hair unbound, barefoot and only in his underclothing.
He froze when he realized she was awake, and stared at her agape as if she'd caught him doing something he shouldn't. As if somehow she didn't know he'd been violating her for weeks.
(Unfortunately: the storm had collapsed many tents in the camp in the early morning, including his and his sister's. Jiang Yanli had been invited to stay with Mianmian, and Jiang Cheng, knowing Wen Qing would be dead to the world, had ducked into her tent to quickly change into dry clothes.)
And if there had been some part of her that wanted to deny it all, that wanted to hang on to the delusion - to hope - that maybe nothing happened while she lost consciousness nightly, in that moment, was dashed and divided until all that was left of her was rage and a desire to inflict revenge.
She sat up, not even bothering to cover her half nude body, and said,
"The golden core in your body is Wei Wuxian's."
↠↠↠
Wen Qing had hoped that she could goat Jiang Wanyin into killing her, to end her misery.
He didn't.
Three days later, Wei Wuxian re-appeared.
↠↠↠
(In his letter to Jiang Wanyin a day before the Siege of Nevernight, Nie Huaisang wrote:
Jiang-xiong,
Hope you're keeping well in the front. I must confess you are a man of gossip and waggling-tongue these days, but I trust in your character to pay them no mind. I write to you without my brother's knowledge to confirm the favour you asked of me is done. Wen Ning has been located and transported to Unclean Realm with the atmost discretion. He recovers daily.
Your friend,
Nie Huaisang
PS: You seriously need to tell me everything after we kick Wen Ruohan's ass. You owe me! )
I do wonder if we get the beginning of Brief Lives in the next Sandman Netflix season, specifically with this moment:
Tumblr media
If it's going to be played quite the same way? If they end up skipping straight from Seasons of Mist to Brief Lives (which I think is an excellent idea to be clear) it raises a few possibilities:
(cut for comic spoilers & speculation)
Personally I find this moment a bit weird in general because Dream doesn't even name the woman who supposedly just broke his heart and thus launched the action of this arc. Also the fact we later find out it's Thessaly who in the comic at least (the show can always soften the character as they have others) fucking sucks, for her to kick off Dream's sadness roadtrip of self-destruction feels like such a waste. It also feels weird to imagine babygirl Netflix Tom Sturridge Dream going for someone like Thessaly after his whole arc of trying to be a better person and learning important lessons and also just...being a much softer character who is trying to do better, going for someone like Thessaly (who doesn't even like him by her own admission) and who is also terrible feels like a tragic step backwards in his character development. Not inconceivable, just terribly tragic.
Which has me thinking that one possibility is if they go straight from Seasons of Mist to Brief Lives, this moment above could be about Nada, who does choose to pass on after he frees her, even after expressing that she still loves him. That love is just not enough for her to accept his offer to be his queen and stay (after 10k years of Hell, who can blame her?!).
Point is, this moment instead being part of the long tail of Dream's self-recrimination about Nada choosing to pass on would make a lot of sense and be a much more justifiable kick-off for Dream going on a roadtrip that's an expression of his doubts in his ability to change for the better (and therefore, must he die?). Nada's punishment is so heinous I can easily see the Sturridge Dream being conflicted about his own actions for much longer than he appears to be in the comic, leading to this moment after he set her free.
Thessaly is an immortal, so even if/when she shows up, her having an acrimonious "angry ex girlfriend" reaction to Dream need not be because she was the girlfriend who kicked off the Brief Lives arc, they could have just dated sometime in the past centuries and still have vitriol between them.
And finally, and this is just me being a shameless Dream/Hob shipper, I do kind of wonder how one even justifies Dream ending up with an immortal human like Thessaly when Hob is right there.
Look, in the comic, Hob barely seems to remember Dream exists when he's not there, so there's no feeling of "Why doesn't Dream hook up with Hob instead??" when you first learn about Thessaly. But in the show, you've got the 1789 tension, the missed meeting, the devotion of the New Inn. Dream going for another, shitty immortal brunet when Hob is right there feels a bit like a slap in the face in that context.
And let me be clear, it's not because I'm being shipper garbage that thinks Neil can, should, or would alter the story to appease Dreamling shippers or that Dream dating Thessaly in the show as he does canonically in the comic would be an intentional slap in the face to Dreamling shippers! It is beyond wishful thinking to imagine we'd get more than what the comic offers which is a few beautifully rendered, sentimental moments between them for us to build our fanon ship off of. It's not Neil's responsibility to make it canon so don't be fucking weird about it.
It's more that the show is so queer. The comic is queer too but the show absolutely focuses and centers the narrative on predominantly queer couples and people, more than straight ones. They also softened for example the Corinthian and confirmed he's gay and has some non-destructive relationships with men, he's not just a murderer of gay men. So the narrative is even more queer than the comic.
In the 80s/90s when Sandman came out, the idea of Dream as the lead protagonist being canonically queer I think would have been pretty unlikely. He's very, very het in the comics, with the closest we get to a whisper of him not being strictly het being a mention of Lucifer once being beautiful and some speculation they might have had a relationship.
But the show is so very queer and the energy so charged between Dream and Hob (and the writers acknowledged and encouraged it!) that there is no, in my opinion, natural conclusion that, "Sure, almost everyone else is queer in this, but not Dream, obviously." If anything, it would be jarring to have so many queer characters only to slam the door shut on the possibility that Dream might also be queer.
Which is my roundabout way of saying: I wonder how Thessaly will fit into this at all. I speculate she might be removed entirely from this beat of Brief Lives, in favor of making Dream more remorseful about Nada in a sympathetic way. Furthermore, introducing Thessaly when Hob, another immortal who actually likes Dream is right there the idea that he opts for Thessaly (a woman who doesn't even like him to the point where she plays an active part later in his death) instead after being tortured for 106 years is actually painfully heartbreaking.
So in conclusion: eh? Who knows!
But also: DREAM, Hob is RIGHT THERE! Date HIM, not fucking THESSALY?!
i don’t think people realize that at this point it’s much more important for queer stories to be shown in a positive light than it is to portray them “realistically”.
(there’s also an issue in the idea that queer characters/couples not suffering 24/7 is inherently unrealistic, but that’s another can of worms.)
there are plenty of “realistic” queer love stories out there. we get it. most queer people lead miserable lives, never get happy endings, and are generally shunned from society, right? we know this. we see it all the time. we experience it. i’d like to think that we’ve come far enough to say that representation is no longer just about queer people being included—it’s also about depicting them in a way that’s somehow meaningful, fulfilling, and—dare i say—hopeful.
is will’s self-hatred, shame, and overall reluctance to come out to anyone a realistic portrayal of the experience of being a closeted gay kid in the 80s? yes, of course it is. nobody thinks it isn’t. the problem is that, ultimately, this is a TV show with a narrative. it’s supposed to tell a story, and a good one at that.
my question is this: what does will having unrequited feelings for his (supposedly) straight best friend do for the narrative? what does it do to develop any characters involved? the answer is nothing. it does absolutely nothing. it’s just another unnecessary tragic ending for a queer character who’s already suffered beyond belief. will’s arc could have easily been separate from mike’s; it could have been all about self-acceptance and gaining confidence in his identity, but this is very pointedly the route they didn’t choose, and that is why queer people are upset by the path vol 2 went down.
to watch a gay kid’s feelings be used as a prop to push the main heterosexual couple back together is humiliating. to see a lesbian watch as her crush kisses her shock-factor boyfriend is humiliating. it’s like it’s being rubbed in our faces—hey, look, people like you will never be happy! haha!
that’s not the representation we need anymore. it’s not impactful or satisfying or new, it’s just depressing. realism only matters so much in a sci-fi horror/drama, and i’ve honestly never seen so many people bitch and moan about realism until the conversation was about queer characters finding happiness.
so no, queer people are not just sad because their ship didn’t become canon. that is not what this is about. pay more attention, please.
Evangelion, LGBT+ Rights and Time
It is fascinating how readings of Evangelion have changed over time as society varies. In 2012-2015 (and to some degree even now), vocal shippers would bully others if they chose the "wrong" pairings. Reminder to everyone that you choose to engage with fan content, and it is 100% your choice to harass and bully people over their views. Shipping fictional characters should be fun and a way to engage on a different level with fandom, not an exercise in who has the moral high ground. There are shows I will not engage with because I find the canon pairings to trigger my C-PTSD, but I block those tags. (It's Madoka Magica; the third movie starts a violent fear reaction).
When I first watched Evangelion circa 2010, a Trans reading of Evangelion, though not unheard of, was less common than it is now. I grew up in Northern Alberta, Canada, where we knew what gay, straight, and bi were. Still, everything else was not mentioned until after I graduated high school and moved to a bigger city for University in 2009. This led to me doing a lot of self-discovery. I didn't fully embrace my non-binary identity until I turned 28 for various reasons, including personal safety (that would be spring of 2019, for those wondering). I knew my gender identity differed from others because of the LGBT+ club at University, where I would hang out and learn new terminologies, identities, and what consent meant. Still, until recently, people did not talk about LGBT+ identity outside of these circles, especially not in groups with aging populations. Fast forward to now (2023) on Tumblr, when there are so many differences in opinions and interpretations. I wonder if people my age (or older) watched Eva and considered the characters could be anything but straight and cis or if they were shocked by Maya's love for Ritsuko when it was revealed in End of Evangelion. 90s media had a lot of ingrained homophobia and transphobia. You don't need to look further than popular sitcoms like the Simpsons or FRIENDS to see the LGBT+ community ridiculed for a cheap laugh. Western society was very anti-LGBT, and though we have made gains with marriage equality laws in 2005 for Canada, there is still room for improvement.
When I watched NGE/EoE, It was at the start of LGBT+ identities becoming more prevalent in Western media. I watched the ambiguous interactions of episode 24, and I remember thinking how sad it was that Kaworu had to die. The interactions between Shinji and Kaworu did not appear romantic or wholesome while I watched. It seemed tragic and doomed to failure (like Shiniji's previous attempts at gaining understanding.) Upon my first watch, I concluded that Shinji's desperation for affection led to his attraction to Kaworu. It did not seem genuine, and I saw it as less romantic and more as a deeply tragic episode where a broken boy is manipulated by lies of exclusion and ultimately heartbroken because he is once again betrayed and left alone. This reading was solidified for me in EoE when Asuka confronts Shinji with the line that anyone will do in Hell's Kitchen. Shinji is even more frantic and desperate for someone to love and save him and is once again rejected. Shinji wants someone to give him love and support and to understand and help him. The fear and desperation of being left alone make Episode 24 and End of Evangelion incredibly twisted and tragic. Shinji's arc climaxes with the tragedy of human miscommunication, desperation for affection, and the desire for love and understanding without the act.
Tumblr media
Hell's Kitchen (End of Evangelion)
There's so much pain in suffering and loneliness. Additionally, I firmly believe Shinji did not/does not love anyone romantically in NGE/EoE. I am not saying he has no potential to love anyone. He is not there yet in his journey. He may have crushes or interests, but romantic love takes Time, communication, compromise, understanding, and so many elements of vulnerability between two people to establish, form, and maintain that connection. Shinji did not have the time to develop a true romantic bond with anyone and was not in a formal relationship. Yes, he kissed Asuka and relied on her for stability/support. He had deep conversations with Kaworu and received unconditional affection. He trusted and depended on Misato. He was curious about Rei and wanted to help her/know more about her. Still, he never took steps to form a romantic partnership, instead preferring to "keep things ambiguous."
Shinji is still figuring things out. The point of NGE and EoE isn't romance. It's figuring out your identity.
This message of misunderstanding and muddling through your identity is likely why it resonates so much with LGBT+ communities because many of us did have to muddle out our difficult questions of identity. It can be intimidating to navigate so much information, especially if you aren't in a safe environment. It feels similar to being attacked by alien forces in a war zone, except instead of Angels, it is hate-filled views, bullying, name-calling, misinformation, and fear. And instead of Evas/NERV, we have GSAs, outreach centres, online spaces, and supportive people that we hope will help us more than they harm us.
I find an element of cultural difference intriguing in Evangelion (and all Japanese anime to some degree). Japanese people interpret scenes very differently from English-speaking Western audiences. Part of the nuance is lost in translation, cultural differences, and the differences in Time that have passed. I highly recommend reading various semi-autobiographical works such as "The Bride was a Boy" or "My lesbian experience with loneliness." to understand the queer experience in Japan better. There are a lot of differences to sort through when we look at different cultures. Unfortunately, Japan has a ways to go on LGBT+ rights, including access to transgender health care and same-sex marriage (which, at the time of writing, is still not recognized in Japan). My point is that culture-to-culture intent in various media, whether written or visual, will be lost. We can, of course, read interpretations, watch video essays, talk to friends, etc. Still, to draw our conclusions, we often would rather watch the source material as "purely" as well as can without interference from other people. This brings in a final theme from Evangelion. We can never understand anyone 100%; only you can completely understand yourself. So whether you agree or disagree with me, remember these are my thoughts and opinions shaped by my life growing up as an LGBT+ Canadian. So be good to yourself, and congratulations.
BITTERSWEET RANT ABOUT QUEER (MLM) CHARACTERS IN CURRENT MEDIA
I used to think it was impossible for me to hyperfixate on a show/ship without reading and writing nonstop fanfic about it. But then, a year and a half ago, I watched OFMD and I staunchly refused to read or write any fanfic, because I needed to wait it out and see how the amazing writers planned the story to continue. (I'm ecstatic for October 5th.)
I still considered myself to continue obsessing over my queer ships, especially when I watched Galavant and fell into a bit of a Richard/Gareth hole (but there are very few fics, I planned to write one but kept going back to my Macden fics).
Then, I watched Hannibal, and I tried to read fics, planned one too, but I just couldn't get into it, and preferred obsessively rewatching the show instead.
Now I'm literally refreshing fanvids of our Ineffable Husbands from Good Omens on YT daily, but completely unable to even glance at fics.
It's funny to think how far we are coming with queer characters in media, and I'm just so excited to see shows that refuse to queerbait. They aren't using a viewership by playing with never-ending hints and nods but zero follow through. They are acknowledging that acts of abandonment or betrayal have consequences, regardless of the initial intentions. They refuse to do that kind of disservice to the respective narrative journeys of these characters.
Yes, they may be angsty and a bit sad right now, but Goddammit, we are finally getting sincere, star-crossed gay love stories. Tragic, but not in your typical heartbreaking Brokeback Mountain -esque media from the past (no hate, love the movie, thought the short story was okay).
These queer love stories are giving the same kind of painful passion as some of the best dramatic romances around (one of my fave genres). What a time to be alive! Because it's not an unhappy ending until it ends. The best love stories have to have nearly impossible obstacles. That is how the relationships are tested.
Just thinking about how I've always hyperfixated in the past vs. how I do now. I realized it's because I finally have hope. I can't consume fics because I trust the creators and writers of canon so explicitly that I know they will continue showing how they respect the viewers while also acknowledging the significance, the absolute necessity of delving into the arcs and development the characters need to find within themselves.
I believe David Jenkins and Neil Gaiman are determined to do right (as Bryan Fuller would be, if ever given the chance to continue), not by all the vastly different opinions of the countless countering fans, but by the way they have shown genuine acknowledgement to the romance and enough respect for the love interests to make them face challenges that help them grow. Queer characters are the leads' now, and they are fully-formed yet ever-changing, unique representations, flirting with fun stereotypes, without reducing them to the worst and most inaccurate social stigmas.
So, I'm ever-resolute to hold out for canon, because I don't want to get my head so full of incredible fanfic that I have my opinion change from constantly switching perspectives.
These writers are changing the game so much that I can't help but trust that - even beyond just the romantic aspect - they actually care about the development of the characters, they aren't defined by just being gay, they are complex.
In other words, I'm in a perpetual state of refreshing Macden fic updates every time I want to read something, and trying to conjure the desire to write again, so I can get back this other Macden fic, after having spent the past two years straight writing the most fics I have for any ship in my entire life.
But, yeah, it's totally crazy to realize that the reason I can not read any of the amazing fics out there for Our Flag Means Death, Hannibal & Good Omens is because these shows are already so enthusiastic and welcoming of their queer characters.
You're just salty people ship him with the male characters so clearly you're homophobic.
Hey, want to see some art I've made of my favourite gay ships? :)
Also wow, you are defending the gay ships, but not the straight ones? Sounds kinda like you're fetishizing gay mlm ships to me tbh.
Anyways! Before that, here is a pride post! At the end I also included my headcanons for all the Asexual and Aromantic characters in Dr. Stone!
Tumblr media
Back to it, here are two of my favourite gay ships I drew art for!! You can see my progress over the years too, isn’t that exciting?
RyuGen is such a cool ship too, it's sad how slept on it is in the fandom tbh.
And HyoMoz, Gods I love this ship too, I headcanon both Hyōga and Moz to also be on the Aromantic spectrum and them having a sort of friends with benefits situation. Hyoga also a gives me a bit of Ace spec vibes. Alternatively MozHyoMura because you gotta admit, they'd be a power throuple.
XenoStan is absolutely canon. They’re literally soulmates, I need to make more art of them.
And Matsukaze with his old lord and finding new love in Ginro! It's such a tragically beautiful ship
I could ramble on more, but I want to show you my art!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
CaeJose is one of my all time OTPs, I love them 😩
You can find more on my art blog :)
And just because we’re on the topic, here some Senku with the AroAce flags! We stan loveless AroAces!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And as promised, here are some of my headcanons for who else is on the asexual/aromantic spectrum in Dr. Stone!
Hyoga (Greyaromantic and possibly aceflux, he could also just be allosexual, doesn’t really have a preference, but he enjoys Homura’s and Moz’ company)
Moz (Aromantic, but romance-favourable, definitely a bisexual)
Ukyo (Demiromantic and Demisexual, he gives me gay man vibes)
Sai (loveless AroAce)
Kinro (loveless AroAce)
Kohaku (Demiromantic and Demisexual if not Aceflux)
Kirisame (loveless AroAce)
Xeno (Demiromantic to Greyaromantic, homosexual, he clearly is married to Stanley tho and Stan is very supportive of his gay aro-spec husband!)
Taiju (Demisexual and Demiromantic)
Gen (Aroflux, and definitely bisexual)
Francois (loveless AroAce)
I think it’s a shame that Stella ended up the way she did. I’m not saying that she needed to be a complex 3D character or get redeemed or have a tragic backstory but it’s a shame that she was reduced to “I’m a spoiled brat who hates my husband!!!” Originally it was a morally grey thing, with Stolas cheating on his wife (resulting in a scandal about him cheating with an imp in a PUBLIC PARTY). Olivia also says that they didn’t used to hate each other, but unless she was the most oblivious 17 year old alive she would have known how much Stella loathed him (in s2e1 she says to his face that she likes tormenting him and mocks him in front of all his friends).
The reason their relationship was so interesting was that neither Blitz or Stolas were right! Blitz used him for the book and Stolas cheated. Making Stella a brat takes a lot of blame away from Stolas. You know what it reminds me of?
When female characters in fanfiction are demonized for the sake of making a gay ship look better. Stella is this trope to a T, removing any interesting things about her. I might send another ask on my opinion on s2e1.
It really is kinda terrible to see her fall so much as a character, despite her barely having anything to begin with.
Like...I don't know why Vizzie and the writers are obsessed with making Stolas out to be a perfect guy when he was the one who threw the entire family into jeopardy by sleeping with Blitz. Obviously we sympathize with him because Blitz likes him and he's an alright enough guy, but he still cheated on his wife. Even if she is a royal ass, we feel more bad for Octavia because she's clearly not handling the whole situation all too great.
It's not the most nuanced thing in the world, but it's something. It's interesting. It provides depth to Stolas and his relationships. He's willing to disrupt his seemingly okayish family life because he got horny and wanted a plaything.
Then season 2 rolled around. It retcons everything to make Stolas out to be an itty bitty lil' cinnamon roll who was pushed into marrying Stella and was actually sad the whole time because Stella is an abusive asshole who never loved him. The way she talks about him in season 1 versus season 2 is so much more different. It strips her of any sort of character and just makes her as blatantly evil and horrible as possible. Openly insults him for being bad in bed, complains about him, etc and etc.
I also hate how they retconned it so that Blitz and Stolas first met when they were kids and Blitz was Stolas's first friend. It feels something straight out of a bad fanfic. It makes the relationship less interesting to me since apparently these two knew each other already before they started this whole thing. It's just...yeah. Bad writing.
Then s2e4. I don't know what the writers did or if it was the direction the voice actor was given, but her voice is EAR-SPLITTING. Every word is so shrill and irritating to listen to. Not to also mention that she's just a stuck-up oblivious brat who behaves like a toddler. It's asinine.
It literally is just: "I don't like the Women because it gets in the way of my Hot Demon Yaoi so I'm going to make her the worst character in all of fiction" and it's really tiring.
What even happened with season 2? Where did Brandon go? What happened to the sharper and wittier dialogue and writing? Yeah, Helluva usually was about dick and sex jokes, but most jokes now are just the same old thing over and over again. I remember when it was like s1e5 and around that time when I was really on board with the show. Now it's just...yeah. This.
Do you have any other stranger things ships?
At the risk of starting Discourse... yes lol
Hellcheer obv - i like eddie and steves friendship dynamic but i find it very, very weird that theres such an insistence that theyre just as canon as hellcheer bc steve like... literally confessed to nancy that hes still desperately be-my-wife-and-mother-of-my-many-children in love with her but whatever. Like I'll concede that sure maybe actors and writers and showrunners all saying that hellcheer was romantic isnt technically canon, fine, but, uh. Idk. Hardcore pushing-for-canon to the point of harassing the joes abt steddie and shitting on grace/chrissy abt steddie is... extremely offputting to say the least, esp given the fact that it could not be more clear that they are not and have never been and will never be canon, even if eddie was still alive. I definitely think eddie is bi tho lol
Anyway
I like nancy with steve better than with jonathan - yeah steve was a typical high school popular boy asshole for a while, but jonathan 1) literally creepshotted her, 2) manic-pixie-dream-girl'd her, and now 3) is actively lying to her and avoiding her. I've never liked him and his only redeeming quality imo is the way he goes to fuckin bat for will at every chance he gets bc i love will
I like robin and nancys friendship, if i didnt love steve and want him to be happy as much as i do, id want robin and nancy to get together bc vickie is blah and robin and nancy have such a cute dynamic and complement each other so well, but if robin rly likes blah vickie then so be it, i want robin to have a gf that she likes
Jopper but thats a no brainer lol
As for the kids theyre kind of too young for me to really care enough to "ship". Max and lucas are cute together. I rly hope that they dont go the tragic-single-gay-kid route with will bc i love him so, so much and it seems like the writers are definitely angling to keep mike/eleven together, so i hope he finds someone and doesnt spend his life crying and pining for a straight boy who doesn't love him back. Idc abt dustin and susie. Actually i feel like the writers are setting up dustin and erica to get together (like 10 years from now, obv) but i like their friendship its so funny.
I love hopper/joyce/murray 3 musketeers dynamic
I like argyle and jonathans friendship but mostly bc it means i get to see argyle bc i love him lol hes so funny
Is that all the characters? Theres so many characters on this show i love most of them and dont want any of them to die off but i cant keep track of them all lol
Oh and btw i hate billy, glad hes dead, have never and will never ship him w anyone bc he was a racist abusive piece of shit who had one (1) redeeming moment of his entire fucking existence, its sad that he was abused but that doesnt excuse the fact that he was also abusive, sorry not sorry
slightly controversial take among people who actually watch stranger things although it is not the least bit controversial among people who don’t: season 4 was kinda fucking disappointing. eddie becoming a hero at the last moment is what makes the most sense for his character arc, but when a show introduces a beloved/mostly-beloved doomed side character in EVERY season it takes away the suspense and the surprise of them dying. also, hopper being alive after being presumed dead at the end of season 3 ruined the suspense of other characters’ peril, specifically max’s, and his own peril in volume 2 after they broke back into the prison. i knew he would be fine and i knew max would be alive at the end of the season. the only thing i didn’t see coming was max (technically) dying and her coma after eleven revives her, i didn’t anticipate there’d be any sort of chink in the plot armor around her and the other main characters for that to happen even if she did come back after. i remember before volume 2 came out, i talked to my coworkers about stranger things who were worried steve would die, and i was like “no dude, if anyone dies it’ll be eddie, which i really don’t want that to happen because i love eddie, but it’s the only thing that really makes sense as a conclusion for his arc, because how the fuck would they convince the town that he didn’t kill 3 people?” and i hate that i was right but it was so predictable that instead of being surprised or even sad i was just pissed because they’ve done this to us every season, except arguably season 3 because billy wasn’t universally beloved and i personally sure as hell hated his guts, but they introduced a hot dangerous guy that people woobified tbh and then killed him so he kinda counts. but in season 1 they did this with barb, season 2 it was bob, season 3 it was billy, so as soon as chrissy died, or arguably as soon as eddie was introduced, you could clearly see his death coming. for me that part was the most irritating of the entire season. i also don’t like the weird shit they’re pulling with steve and nancy and i don’t like the way robin and her love life were treated either. maybe im just gay but nancy had the most chemistry and sexual tension with robin out of anyone else, and the chemistry between her and steve felt like… like, okay, yeah, if you’re around your ex that much by necessity without your current partner around, there’s gonna be some tension, but it felt forcibly amplified and deprived nancy of her agency. i would’ve been much more satisfied if she had the same dilemma of “oh shit, i have a boyfriend, but damn…” but in the process she discovers she’s a bisexual queen, and robin’s band crush just sadly turned out to be straight. it’s cool that it seems like she’s bi so they’re giving us (bisexuals) a crumb too, but it would’ve been cooler if it was nancy, a central character, especially because it wouldn’t have been the writers forcing her back into a relationship that was toxic based on the “if we met now” “changed man” shit. “sorry, steve, that ship has sailed, maybe ya should’ve been more respectful to nancy while ya had the chance, but we’re glad you’re more mature now, also i’m discovering that i’m bisexual because i’m totally into your lesbian best friend” would be much more interesting and satisfying than “well, damn, if we were meeting for the first time now And I Didn’t Have A Boyfriend i’d fuck you so maybe we SHOULD get back together.”
honestly, there’s so many things to complain about, but this post is so fucking long already. let me add a disclaimer though that while i don’t think a story has to be unpredictable to be good, i DO think that if you circle through the same basic narrative structure enough times in a single story, it gets boring and unsatisfying. the comedic rule of 3s (the first time it’s funny, the second time it’s a little funnier, the third time it’s HILARIOUS but any more is overkill) applies to dramatic or tragic works too. if you create a show and you get to season 4, you should switch your basic outline a little. but honestly i think season 3, or even season 2, would’ve been a perfectly fine place to end stranger things, the story had pretty much run its course by the end of season 2 and definitely had by the finale of season 3. but if you’re gonna run a story past it’s natural end, using the same plot structure isn’t just beating a dead horse, that horse is a fucking pulp, my guy.
I am gay and you better believe it matters to me if someone is an LGBTQ couple or just "selling" themselves as a couple as consistently and intentionally as Jikook. Why is it always "selling" and never "expressing" or just "being"? Why isn't everyone in BTS marketed as a gay ship then? Wouldn't that be the logic? Or are Jikook the only ones willing to commit to the concept? Sorry anon but you came off condescending. I am sure you meant well.
If Jikook are indeed a couple, they can't be out in the way that so many people want and frankly seem to feel entitled to. If anyone wants them to be as free and transparent as a straight couple, then join the fight for equality worldwide. Don't just do it for them either. Do it for your fellow humans. I don't understand how people can be such takers when it comes to Jikook. It's nothing but expectations and insecurities. Let these men breathe.
If you've lived as an LGBTQ person in any culture, or even if you just care about LGBTQ people as human beings (not just fantasy 'characters') you should care about authenticity and authorship of LGBTQ people in media. Of course this is a very complicated issue when we are looking at media figures from a country where the number of out celebrities is tragically small because, hello, LGBTQ people are very stigmatized. Without legal protections in place, gay people are under threat. This means queer art is sometimes made without being able to confirm or even address queer identity. People can't confirm your dreams when they are under threat. You can choose to believe, love and support them, or not.
Sometimes we have to understand where people are coming from and decide to either take them on faith or not. If this sounds like too much trust to put into a money making celebrity, I get it. But what choice is there? Jimin and Jungkook don't owe anyone transparency at the price of their careers, health, or physical safety. They show all they can afford to show which is a lot. I personally think it comes from their hearts and souls. They have been shown to act too unambiguously like a couple in too much content for me to not believe the simplest and least cynical reason this might be. They should be allowed to express themselves as artists and human beings and if that includes queerness, go them. If you think they aren't authentic in the way they perform or socialize on camera, fine. But please do not tell that me it could all be exploitative marketing and that that wouldn't be problematic. LGBTQ people have fought for generations just for a chance at being treated like regular human beings. It is sad that two young and brave men are doubted all the time about everything. Straight people don't have to prove their love for one another all the time in daily footage to be not thought of callous marketers play acting an oppressed minority. There are many reasons for a closeted LGBTQ couple to either hide or flaunt their relationship to fans. We aren't in their head and certainty is not an expectation.
Every single word carved in stone anon. Every single word.
Thanks for your ask, Anon!
Ship that I have as an OTP:
Netteflix (or Felannie), aka Annette/Felix. These two are just so freaking adorable together, I can't... Felix trying to logic through her silly lyrics is amazing, Felix genuinely showing concern for her and complimenting her warms my heart, Annette trying to bribe him into forgetting her singing makes me lol. Their ending is also great, especially since it's one of his better endings outside of AM, and their AM ending is heartwarming, even if it ends on a slightly bittersweet note.
Ship that makes me sad:
All of Lysithea's ships where she doesn't get her double crest removed/her lifespan restored, so basically her ships with Felix, Lorenz, Raphael, Ignatz, Cyril and Balthus. Although many of these still show that she was successful/happy in what time she had, the idea of her dying young because of something the Empire and Slithers did to her when she was just a little kid will never stop being tragic. Lysithea/Cyril probably takes the cake (pun intended), since it is one of the few support lines where Lysithea is genuinely nice to her support partner throughout and then it ends like that... The fact that Lysithea and Cyril are the youngest characters of the cast only makes it more heartbreaking.
Ship that is most misunderstood:
Ooph. I've seen a lot of bad takes in my 7 months in FE3H fandom, and I'm not gonna tag any of the characters involved since I'm really not in the mood for discourse right now, but I think it'll have to be a three-way tie between Caspar/Catherine ("she's trying to turn him into a religious zealot who kills children!"), Dimitri/Dedue ("this ship is racist--you're shipping a white saviour and his POC slave!") and Ingrid/Dorothea ("Her rejecting Dorothea's advances is just her internalized homophobia speaking and they should have had an A support!").
Putting the rest beneath the cut, because here is where things get spicy. Dorothea/Ingrid fans may not wish to read the rest
I am white as toast and an atheist, so I don't have as much of a personal stake in the first two ships (beyond genuinely loving 3 of the 4 characters involved and feeling flames on the side of my face when they are being mischaracterized for the sake of discourse), but the Dorothea/Ingrid thing especially gets my goat, since I spent most of my teeenage years trying to figure out my own sexuality and the most important take-away I got from that is "consent is important and you should respect people's boundaries and choices". Ingrid is just about the straightest girl/woman in the entire cast. She doesn't have a single A support or paired ending with any female character (except A with female Byleth of course, but still only an ending with male Byleth) and she makes it very clear in their B support that Dorothea does not have her permission to "pounce" on Ingrid. What part of "I do not want your sexual advances" is so hard to understand? A straight person has just as much right to tell someone of the same sex "No, I'm not interested." as a gay person has the right to say the same to someone of the opposite sex. Rejecting advances from a member of the same sex is not automatically homophobia, it's just being straight*. If Ingrid were talking disparagingly about same sex couples, that would be homophobia. If she were to say things like "me and another girl? Ew, gross", that would be homophobia. But dear god, I wish people would stop erasing/trivializing/warping Ingrid's very clear denial of consent. It is supremely creepy.
I mean... headcanon all you want, that's fine. If you want to write a 40 chapter slow-burn friends-to-lovers AU where Ingrid falls in love with Dorothea--go nuts! That's what fanfic is for. But at least acknowledge that it’s your HEADcanon and not actual canon.
*Edited to add: It can also just mean that you’re just not into that person, even if they technically fall within your “attraction scope”. Even if Ingrid were bi/lesbian, she would not be obliged to say yes to Dorothea or any other woman who shows an interest just because they’re women. Apologies if my wording made it seem like I think any woman who says no to another woman is automatically straight. Point still stands about Ingrid being canonically straight as her lance.
Im honestly so done with aot fandom wars really. I now let people spew whatever shit they want. It gets toxic in the end. I started hating so many characters because of this irritating fandom till I realized that a bunch of teenagers dont have the right to steal my love for this story away from me. Theyre so ridiculous really it looks like a bunch of kids decided to watch AOT and miss the point entirely. Yams wrote a beautiful story that gets more interesting when you reread it. I wasnt even aware of shipping wars till I finished the manga only to realize its hellfire here. I just assumed oh Erwin loved Marry but chose the corps how sad. Shadis had a thing for Carla. Bittersweet. Oh Ymir and Historia loved each other. Tragic. Reiner is a historia simp great. Oh Levi and Hanji are closeted lovers who just cant accept they're into each other. And thats it. But I went online just to see wow manga discussions yaaay and I ran into middle school children shipping Levi with Eren/Mikasa I mean are you ok? Are you not unhinged? Do you need therapy? Seriously guys wtf? Levi/Erwin? WTF? They're literally brothers wtf? Hange/Moblit, WTF? Are you even aware of the concept of friendship and loyalty that runs in the army? Do you think everyone in the army is in love with each other wtf is this logic Im sorry Im so done with this fandom. AOT deserved better fans who'd appreciate the story and its depth. Apart from a few plotholes that made no sense. (Especially hanji's useless fking death, dude she could've lived ok its so unfair. Anyways) I also can't stand it when people start making Yuri and Yaoi ships of two clearly straight characters. I don't mind if you ship characters within a show that have some sort of legitimacy FROM THE SOURCE MATERIAL. But literally changing everything about characters just so they can fit your idea of a stupid ship is pathetic. A character is so much more than someone you ship with someone. Grow tf really.
hi anon, thank you for sharing! i am tired too. i honestly cannot wait for the time i will get over this anime, but if that time comes, i will still ship levihan and probably continue making fanfics about them. at this moment though, I still hyper-fixate on this ship.
I agreed with some of your points, like that with a bunch of kiddos ruining our experience cuz damn, I've seen it a lot after I joined the fandom but I just stayed on my place and blocked a lot of them for peace of mind. And really, at first, I don't have any ship in aot not until i rewatched it for the 2nd time, that's when I have noticed levihan's bond then boom, I'm riding this ship forever. But when I dove through aottwt, I discovered that eren-levi and those ships that involved a veteran and a 104th member exist, damn I just wanna cringe so hard (or i did cringe hard) cuz why? that's fukcing illegal, my brain can't even comprehend why some people ship those characters who obviously treat each other in canon in a parental-child way.
and hange's death? so true! it's just useless when falco will have the ability to turn into a titan and fly by the later chapters -_- they're just one day away from the end of the rumbling but... fck I'm sad again.
however, i do not agree with some of your points.
disclaimer: I'm not mad anon!
eruri and mobuhan aren't illegal. people can ship them cuz of the exact reason that you said - the concept of friendship and loyalty that runs in the army. i admit I cannot see levi/erwin and hange/moblit in a romantic relationship too like how you perceived it, they're just more like superior-subordinate for me that I can't affiliate their relationship to bud in something that will surpass that. but the loyalty and friendship between those characters, i think, are enough for other people to ship them. why? because there aren't any spoken rules in shipping so we don't have the right to dictate what they ship (proshippers aren't included. stop.)
and babe, what's wrong with yuri and yaoi ships?? aot characters' genders aren't mentioned in the source material (though i see hange as nonbinary cuz of the searches that i made before when i kept on seeing gender wars that always involved hange.)
the case is, there's this term called 'projecting'. people are often doing this in the fictional characters that they love - projecting their identity or what they headcanon about this certain character that, whether we like it or not, often diverge away from the source material. i believed that there's no harm in doing so. they see erwin as gay? let them. they see nanaba as nonbinary? let them. they see levi as pansexual? let them. they ship mikasasha? let them. they ship ererei(erenxreiner)? let them.
it's pride month babe. and even if it's not pride month, people can ship yaoi and yuri. people can project their identities that they cannot express in real life to their favorite characters. and you can't stop them from doing so no matter what. that is their decision and we don't have a say on that. it's not pathetic nor dumb.
but yes, do not reduce any character to ship material. that's downright stupid. and as anon said, grow the fuck up.
thank you for sharing still. and as I've said, I'm not mad! i just want to clear some things that i don't share the same sentiment with you.
Luke/Alex Rant
Negativity Alert.
So, ugh, the whole Luke/Alex being exes thing actually brings me so much pain, and it’s like no one understands me :(
I’m actually gonna start with the part that’s gonna make people hate me, which is probably not the best idea when looking for sympathy/empathy/understanding, but oh well, it just makes the most sense to me to write it like that... Thanks for those who bear with me.
First of all... It’s not really canon. I mean, maybe it could be. Maybe they could make it in s2. But I’m tired of people saying it’s straight up confirmed, putting it on wikis and everything. Owen and Charlie were just chatting, joking around and having fun with the fans on live, they weren’t being completely serious.
They clearly like to support fan theories, headcanons, ships. Yet on actual serious interviews they have never mentioned that. They have even talked about how Flynn/Reggie was supposed to be a thing, but not that. Not once did it come up when talking about LGBT representation on the show either(why would they not say Luke isn’t straight?).
I understand having a headcanon and feeling validated when the actors support it but it seems like most people legit can’t tell the difference between that and actual officially canon things? It seems like people either think this is actually written in the show(which we don’t have any evidence of) or that the actors have the authority to decide what’s canon just like the writers/showrunners/directors, which... It’s just not true?
Now, why it actually upsets me.
Well, just for starters... IT’S SO SAD??? I really don’t get what joy people get into characters being broken up??? And I mean, the fact that they stayed friends and are still fine with each other is nice I guess, and I see why that could be appreciated... But at the same time the one thing that made people get this idea was when they held hands in episode 2 when they got scared... With the idea being that Luke instinctively went to Alex to cope, and then Alex said “Let’s not” as in “Let’s not make it weird, we’re not together anymore”.
Which is so freaking sad??? The idea that they used to be each other’s emotional support and now even though they’re friends they can never really be that close anymore? Which, means that things are NOT just completely fine like ~UwU happy exes~??? Same for the also popular "evidence" that Luke supposedly looked sad when he realized Alex liked Willie.
And so, we go to the fact that... They’re clearly not happening “again". Willex and Juke/Palina are the ships. I see most people who are into this saying they’re into the current ships anyway and want for them to thrive and for Luke/Alex to stay only in the past. Which, I mean... I KINDA get, liking ships in the past but wanting them to move on. But that makes more sense to me when it’s something that it’s actually in the thing, not something that’s not shown and you’re pushing to happen only to add heartbreak that didn’t need to be there.
EVEN THEN, pushing that aside and understanding liking this idea of them in the past... Why need for that to be canon then??? If it’s all about the fanfics and fanarts and aesthetics and somewhat suggestive moments to relate to that but nothing actually substantial on the show... Then why push for more than that and open the door for people to get invested and want for them to get back together, when for you nothing’s gonna change either way? It’s so counter-productive.
And if you actually want for them to get back together... Well the idea that the creators of a show targeted at teenage girls would take away the main het ship for a gay one even though there’s already a canon gay ship that doesn’t interfere with anything is ridiculous. So again, keeping it as a headcanon and maybe reading fics where they get a happy ending instead of pushing it as canon it’s the best idea possible too.
Ok, I didn’t mean for this post to be so argumentative and combatitive. I meant for it to be more about my feelings really. But now that I feel like I’ve actually brought good arguments to my stance, there’s that feeling that actually exposing my real emotional reason to think like that is gonna “ruin it” and just invalidate everything... But well, I guess that’s too bad, and if anyone’s taking this seriously at all, which most likely isn’t the case, I again ask you to cut me some slack and not just think everything I said is dumb as hell because of what comes later? Like let’s be real here, we’re all coming from some kind of emotional place here, right? Even getting so attached to fictional characters at all.
So, the thing is, I WOULD LOVE LUKEALEX SO MUCH. The possible dynamic and/or tropes/archetypes that they could have would be literally my weakness. It’s already my weakness. In fact what I might consider my very first serious ship already has it. And god, did I suffer for that, and in the end I don’t even know if the results were worthy and if I’m even sure of what they were.
And that ship was actually a wlw one. A mlm one(I’m a gay guy) makes it 10x worse(the fact that Luke is like totally the kind of character I’m attracted to and Charlie is also like, perfect, doesn’t help either). It would make me invested in a way that would probably already be too much if they were together, but them being exes just absoutely DESTROYS ME. Like on a visceral level.
And the fact that the idea is most of the time that Luke was the one who was there for Alex when he came out. And that maybe Luke was his first love. And now that's gone. It absolutely kills me. It’s so so so tragic.
Like, I actually read a fic like this. Before this whole thing became so popular and Owen/Charlie said anything about it. And it destroyed me. I bawled my eyes out for like an hour. As well-written and touching as it was, it wasn’t worthy, it was definetely not worth suffering so much like a month after reading it.
So it’s just so painful that for most people this is just a cute little thing that doesn’t affect them at all while it truly hurts me so much :/
So yeah, this is my rant. It should probably have been two separate posts, one talking about how I don’t think it’s really canon and one why i don’t want to... Cause as I said, I feel like no one is gonna take me seriously while if I ended it on the arguing part it would lend more credence to it. And I do think people desparately need to take a step back in regards to how they’re considering this 100% confirmed canon(or even anything besides a little teasing).
But I had to vent I guess. Please be kind enough not to come here fight me. Edit: I didn’t mention this at first cause it’s kind of not the main reason and not relevant to LukeAlex specifically, but: I value canon MLM ships A LOT, and watching the show I loved Willex so much and saw nothing between Luke and Alex, so I do 100% want to focus on the canon ship instead of going down this route of hyping up a crackship(that wouldn’t be a crackship if the exes thing was made canon, and might not even classify a crackship even now, but still). I’m not trying to make a point about how people who ship LukeAlex are evil (because, in a way, I do too!), and I definetly don’t want to throw the racism card, but yeah. Just a little extra point to make.
starwritten society “season one” summary in bullet points
The Starwritten Society is a secret organization dedicated to rescuing children with paranormal abilities from those who would manipulate or weaponize those abilities. They also specialize in training those children to control their powers, if need be.
But forget about that let’s get to the cool stuff
fox exists
everyone is either kinda in love with him or fucking hates him
or both *coughwilsoncough*
also he’s a bastard
and he looks like pedro pascal but that’s whatever just focus
he gets back from a mission
and is immediately called into Iara’s office
they’re the head of the Society btw
he thinks he’s in trouble but NOPE
turns out he’s a mentor now! yayyy!
wait no he doesn’t want to be a mentor oops
especially not to this... sassy child
who by the way seems WAY too young to be an agent
and he knows that you need a recommendation from a higher ranking agent to be a mentor and so he asks who recommended him
turns out it was wilson
who’s the head of the high risk rescue division
and also the character that almost the entire made-up fandom ships with fox but they don’t expect it to actually happen because the amount of queerbaiting in tv is RIDICULOUS
but jokes on them everyone in this goddamn show is gay as fuck lol
anyway he confronts wilson bc he doesn’t want a trainee wtf dude
and wilson goes
”I thought having another life to worry about might make you a little less reckless.”
yeah they have a very passive-aggressive rivalry as of yet
and so fox is stuck with a trainee
her name is hollister btw, aidan hollister, she’s the paraself
anywho hollister n fox do NOT get along at first
fox makes it very clear that he doesn’t think hollister is cut out for this kinda shit
like even though she was able to hack into the society's security systems which is basically impossible
she doesn’t know how to hold a gun or fight a bitch
AND she’s like 14, most agents don’t start training until they’re like 17
so shes too young for this shit
and hollister is pissed because she earned her right to be here and this motherfucker is just fuckn UGH
also she has a hidden complex about not being good enough or “worthy” but shhhh that’s a secret
but they‘re stuck with each other though so
then we meet Kennedy, she runs the tech devision and was very impressed Hollister managed to hack the system (that she made! Kennedy made the system! She’s by far the most vital person in the Society and don’t you ever forget it)
Kennedy and Fox are also really good friends they’ve known each other since they were trainees
kennedy immediately takes a liking to hollister
she slowly grows on Fox too but he won’t show it
well he has to adopt train this kid so there’s like a solid three episodes that’s just them going missions and him teaching her how to do agenty stuff
then we meet The Bad Guy
Her name is Eleanor Sylvidas
which is the same name as the first bad guy Fox ever faced bc she‘s that lady’s daughter and has the same name
turns out her mom raised her to continue the family business
if you know what I mean
haha
anyway
so Eleanor is giving the Society a lot of shit to deal with
fox and hollister’s mission is to get any sort of information on her, try to find her location but DO NOT GET INTO A FIGHT WITH HER bc they won’t let hollister get into fights yet
anyway turns out eleanor is in the building at the same time as them
they get split up
hollister gets into a fight with her
of course
because shes Like That
hollister loses but fox saves her and they get the hell out of there
the bad news is that Eleanor is now targeting these two specifically
she recognized fox as the guy who got her mom arrested and since hollister’s his trainee she’s roped into the mess too
so a few episode pass that i haven’t fully daydreamed yet
just a few training things and dangerous shit and fox teaching Hollister how to steal a car
and we have a backstory episode duh
every good show has some backstory exposition
long story short fox‘s parents died in a murder-su•c•de and also his sister got kidnapped and he spent a year in foster care before running away and joining the circus and eventually the Society
hollister never met her parents and has spent her entire life in the foster care system
and tragic villain backstory! That’s the heroes don’t know!
Eleanor’s mom basically made her feel worthless or like she wouldn't be good for anything if she couldn’t carry on with the plan thing.
And she doesn’t actually want to be doing any of this! She just acts like she does and wears this sadistic twisted mask to hide any doubt
but enough sad shit get ready for...
the FANCY PARTY EPISODE
there’s one in each season, where the characters have to sneak into a very rich-people black-tie event
and also sneak in as many weapons as they can fit on their person
so they go to this party
and they split up in order to find eleanor
and fox SPECIFICALLY tells Hollister “if you see her don’t engage, just let me take care of it”
hollister sees Eleanor and tries to get Fox’s attention but eleanor is going somewhere and she doesn’t have time and-
so she just follows Eleanor without Fox’s help
and then they get into another fight
and it’s a pretty even fight bc hollister’s a quick learner and stuff
and so she’s gotten pretty good at fighting
but then fox finds them and hollister’s distracted and eleanor gets away
and so they’re back where they started
there‘s a long scene of him arguing with her because she put herself in danger and could‘ve gotten herself killed
and her arguing that she had it, she could’ve just ended the whole thing right there and they wouldn’t have to deal with this lady anymore
but NO because fox had to interrupt
it ends with hollister storming out of the room and Fox just sighing and leaning against the wall
and then realizing suddenly that
well shit
maybe he does care about this kid
thats not good
but of course he’s not gonna say it out loud bc he doesn‘t want to admit that attachment
in the end it’s after a long talk with Kennedy that he admits it
partially because she locks him in her office because she KNOWS something‘s wrong and she also knows that he’ll bottle it up land deal with it silently unless someone makes him talk about it
Kennedy is absolutely not gonna have that shit because that’s not ✨healthy✨
she’s a good friend like that and also just a badass in general
anyway so fox admits that mayyybe yeah he cares about the kid and possibly hypothetically sees her as a daughter and such
Kennedy seems satisfied so she tells him to go find Hollister
wherever she went
And it turns out!!!
she just straight up left the building and went for a walk to clear her head
which is dangerous, dumbass, what are you thinking someone’s trying to kill you
Hollister is a reflection of myself so it makes sense that she’s an idiot tbh
but anyway a few people who work for Eleanor attacked her and captured her and such
aaaaaaanyway
fox doesnt know that yet so he’s walking around looking for her
and after a while he starts getting worried
because where the hell is she? where the fuck is his kid dammit
and then
he gets a text
from hollister's phone
with a series of coordinates
and so being the impulsive dumbass he is he just goes to those coordinates as fast as he can without any sort of backup
and it turns out!
Eleanor was trying to get both of them in the same place, yknow
two birds with one stone n shit
hollister is still alive don’t worry!
she gets plot armor because I like her
so there’s a fight, there’s blood and grit and also there’s...
✨eleanor having a mental breakdown✨
and so she’s talking about how she HAS to do this and she’s losing her composed cool persona and just going wild
and fox tries to calm her down but it doesn’t work, she just wants to kill them both right now and she’s not gonna stop until either they’re dead or she is
and so they fight, although the main two don’t really have a choice in it
Kennedy shows up with backup bc shes a bad bitch like that
and eventually, after a long fight, Hollister and Fox take down Eleanor
They don’t kill her, obviously, but they are Getting This Bitch Therapy
I think she might be important later in like
season 4 or something
that’s the one I just started daydreaming
but forget about that there’s sappy stuff happening! :D
they’re both on the floor, hollister’s kinda hugging herself and she looks like she‘s about to cry
”I thought you didn’t want me around. I thought I wasn’t good enough.”
and then fox just hugs her
and now they’re both crying
and the viewers are crying
and the sky is also crying
because it’s raining when they get outside
and they’ve become this lil family duo
and BOOM there you go season one in bullet points
Note
anne lister + mariana lawton
Okay but i'm going to talk about this explicitly in the context of gentleman jack the tv show bc otherwise I'll feel REALLY weird about shipping real people. Which I'm sure is what u meant but. For the good of the order I may as well say.
Pros:
I love mariana
Anne needs someone to keep her humble
There is something sort of tragic-romantic to it and the fact that they keep coming back together despite being fundamentally incompatible in what they want is honestly just sad
Cons:
Again. They're fundamentally opposed they are never going to see eye to eye.
Most importantly though is just that Anne and Ann together inject pure undiluted joy straight into my bloodstream and I want to simply believe they are happy and in love forever because I'm gay and their wedding scene gave me my fucking RIGHTS
