Healthy and unhealthy isolation. Anxiety, fear, shame pain and deep helplessness can describe how loneliness can make a soul feel. “Some people can go for a walk or listen to music and feel that they are deeply in touch with themselves. Others cannot.” Many great thinkers have championed the intellectual & spiritual benefits of solitude, Lao Tzu, Moses, Nietzsche, Emerson, Woolf, but many modern humans seem hell-bent on avoiding it.

“Every single time we have a chance to go running we plug in our headphones. Every time we sit in the car we listen to the radio, I mean, my students today tell me they can’t go to the bathroom without their phone on.” - the Atlantic. That is where solitude comes in. Such a separation requires what psychoanalysts refers to as the “capacity to be alone.” You have to have that capacity, the ability to know that you’re going to survive, that you’re going to be okay if you’re not supported by entire group. Put another way, a person who can find a rich self-experience in a solitary state is far less likely to feel lonely when alone.

Whosoever is delighted in solitude is either a wild beast or a god. Solitude vivifies but isolation kills. 9 The Hermit: Fermat's Last Theorem Pierre de Fermat was a 17th-century French mathematician with a habit of taking notes in the margins of books he was reading. One such note, found after his death, announced that he had discovered a marvelous mathematical proof "which this margin is too narrow to contain." By not writing the solution, he left a tempting and frustrating offer for generations afterward. Many mathematicians struggled to produce Fermat's proof, consuming lifetimes. The proof was finally achieved in 1995 after centuries of persistent work done without assurance that a solution truly existed. O Eremita

O Eremita é uma das cartas mais introspectivas do tarot. Assim como a Sacerdotisa, ele vive dentro de sua sabedoria e se ainda tem alguma ação no mundo material, é para adquirir mais conhecimento.

Representada aqui por um eremita numa noite escura de lua minguante. O jovem se esforça para manter aceso seu fogo interior, apesar das intempéries do tempo. O Eremita é sábio, anda acompanhado de uma cobra – que representa sabedoria – e faz esse caminho, solitário e em condições ermas, pois sabe que encontrará um melhor momento ou, ainda melhor, iluminação através de seu caminho.

No lado negativo, o Eremita pode se desconectar tanto do mundo que se torna apático. Pode ter tendência a falta de fogo ou ânimo, indicar tristeza, solitude, solidão e isolamento. Além disso pode não ser a melhor carta caso precise de ação ou para situações materiais.
