Weird question, I know but...
Do you know if there has ever been a popularity poll done on wmmap characters?
What happens is that on tiktok I saw a video of the most viewed fl on tiktok and Athanasia was the most popular (by far), then navier, medea, and more
and the thing is that I started talking with a friend about the popularity of the characters, if there was ever a survey and all that
and since you seem to know a lot about the fandom... that's why I ask 。◕‿◕。
(also, athy is my favourite, she is my meow meow but i'm afraid claude is more popular than her lol)
If you are asking about wmmap character's popularity compared to other manhwas, then there's never been a survey like that. There are Twitter polls, but those aren't really representative of anything and are heavily biased depending on the account's followers (plus, people use bots). That been said, Athy and Lucas always score pretty high. But in any case, that's only a very, very small portion of the western readers' opinion, and can hardly be called official.
My perception is that Athy is probably the most popular FL, or high up there, since wmmap is the only otome manhwa that has a real fandom (as in, dedicated content creators, fanartists, writers, cosplayers, etc., not just readers). Raeliana, Penelope and recently Ruby (?) are pretty popular, but I don't think their fanbases are that big. Easy way to tell: the number of fanarts, fics, edits, the RTs Spoon and Carrotoon get when a new chapter drops vs what other series get, reposts, the amount of resellers and how expensive wmmap merch gets, etc. What other manhwa and its characters trend on Twitter when a chapter comes out?
About wmmap characters within the series, the popularity polls have been about them as Athy's love interests. There was a post made by Kuaikan (chinese publisher) about it. Unsurprisingly, Lucas won by a lot, then the "she should just stay with Claude" option, and then Ijekiel? if I recall correctly.
Much more interestingly, there was a survey made by Plutus from the time the novel was still being published (it doesn't get more official than that), about what character the readers wanted Athy to end up with. The results: "In the vote for the character that best suits Athy, Lucas took first place with an overwhelming number of 6.022 votes. Almost 6 times the level of second place Jennette". Ijekiel "only got 554 votes, which is half of Jennette's votes". And finally, Jennette "defeated the sub-male Ijekiel and took second place with 1.222 votes". (Source: Each character's namu wiki profiles).
I kept track of how many congratulatory fanarts and tweets each character got since Spoon revealed their birthdays, and if we go by those numbers, Athy is the favorite by far. Following her comes Lucas, and then Claude. Those three definitely got hundreds of posts, the rest of the characters only got a handful. If we go by sought-after merch and how expensive it gets in the second-hand market, Lucas and Athy fight for the first place, then Claude.

Can I know more about Arvid? I saw him mentioned in @kit-fisto-obsessive ‘s fic and you talk about him some on here but I haven’t seen much of him on your own AO3
GLADLY
I have a couple posts on Arvid here but I don't think I've really put much on AO3 at all of him. I think he only appears in passing mentions such as in dual wield where he's mentioned by Cin.
Anywhooo~
I did an introduction post here with his old design and a new design and some alters here but I can go over it again ehehe
Basically:
Arvid Carin is best mates with Jaro Tapal and the partner of Dex Jettster. He's also an Artisan Jedi Master as the current head of the Woodworking Department of the Division and has trained one padawan, the current Second Hand of the Department— Turu.
He's from another one of my fan-made races, a dragon species that has branching roots in the Fae and Spirits. While there are a few of them across the Galaxy, but he's specifically an Inferno Drakon hailing from the volcanic planet Surlogi.
Like all Inferno Drakon who have chosen to assume a more humanoid appearance and leave Surlogi, Arvid has a number of forms that he can assume.
His true form is a massive, wingless dragon with the full length being about half as long as the temple is wide.
His main form is about 6'9" standing upright without his horns, though he slouches a lot. This is what most people see him as, and while his legs are still humanoid, his feet are definitely still that same clawed dragon look.
His combat form is a bit more draconic, his legs change to be more dragon-like and his hands become more clawed with more scales appearing under and through his skin. he's about 7'10 at that height when fully upright
His "compact" form or resting form is either after a fight or when conditions are met that require him to condense into an almost fully human form just to keep from exploding outwards into his true form. He's about 5'10 - 6' tall in that form but is much hotter to the touch than the other two humanoid forms. Almost scalding.
Save for the last one, Arvid retains his horns and tail in his human forms and has a very high body temperature
Personality wise he's known as a quiet, tired, and reserved individual to pretty much everyone and while true, he is also incredibly kind and compassionate.
His tiredness stems from his inability to find a good way to sleep with horns and a tail along with having just a general insomnia. He spends his waking hours working and often avoids people if possible while he does so he doesn’t lose focus. He enjoys listening to people talk though, so if he’s sought out while working for conversation it’s very one sided but he’s paying attention
While he enjoys children and doesn't mind them clinging to him for warmth, he states he'd be a very bad Master now days, to which Turu assures him that he was a fine Master when They were learning under him. Arvid also states he'd be a bad parent, though it is noted that he makes a decent father figure to Dex's adoptive daughter Onyx.
ofc despite all of this, Arvid is still a dragon and he does have a rather dangerous temper when it gets to that point. Basically:
Arvid Cairn was slow to anger, just like the magma flows his kind were borne from. Slow to anger, yet extremely dangerous when he did.
A forgotten fact to some.
The cracking of bones under his grip was something that wasn’t quite foreign to him— but it had been a long time. Been a long time since he had felt this angry.
I have some other little bits of triva, but these are the big parts.
Theres a lot of describing points that follow fire/volcano analogies lol

Blueberries (Kaminari Denki x Reader)
A/N: :0 I know what you're thinking, another fic so soon?? I'm trying to go through my WIP's before starting anything else, and I have about 38 ideas and about 15 wips, so... yeah. Hopefully I'll get more out soon!! I wanted to say thanks in advance, this blog is a few followers away from 100, which is insane to think about. I really appreciate all of you for reading my work and liking it enough to follow. I hope you enjoy what the future holds!
Pairing: Kaminari Denki x Reader (gn but refences to makeup, so probably fem leaning?), Established Kiribaku
Word Count: 1.6k
Warnings: Language, I think that's it
__
“I don’t know Kiri, finals are coming up soon, and my anthro professor has been up my ass-“
“It’s one fucking date, it’s not like it’s a week long excursion in the mountains, Jesus” You rolled your eyes at Bakugo’s interruption, sticking your tongue out at the angry blonde. Before you could argue with him, Kirishima spoke.
“Katsuki is right (Y/N), it's just one night! If you don’t enjoy it, then that’s that! He’s not the type to make things awkward if they don’t work out, I think you’ll have a really good time.” You sigh, you could never say no to the red head. “I guess it is just one night.”
He smiles, big and excited while Bakugo just rolls his eyes. Kirishima whips out his phone, furiously typing. “Great, I’ll let him know, you guys are having dinner at 6, I’ll text you the location, you two will meet there, just in case. There’s already a reservation, so when you get there just tell them your name and they’ll take you there.” Your eyes widen, you only have a few hours to get ready and psych yourself up for the date. You pack up, grabbing your drink as you get ready to leave the café. Kirishima wishes you luck and you head back to your apartment.
You met Kirishima Eijiro in your first year of college. You were in the same intro to history course, which was required for all freshmen to take. The two of you were paired together for a group project and became quick friends. You learned you both lived in the same dorm building (the only gender neutral dorm building on campus) and soon enough the two of you were inseparable. Though you hadn’t been able to meet his friends besides his boyfriend, Bakugo Katsuki, due to your busy schedule. The following year the three of you got an apartment together close to campus. You were a student full time and also worked full time at one of the coffee shops on campus, so even though you’ve known the two of them for two years now, you still had yet to meet all of their friends. A few had come over during your weekly movie nights, but there were still one or two you haven't met yet due to conflicting work schedules. One of them being your date for the evening.
You sighed as you stared at your closet, wishing the duo had returned to the apartment with you to help than staying at the café to study. You looked up the restaurant you were meeting your date at. It wasn’t fancy, thank god, and you pulled out your favorite outfit that fit the dress code and quickly got changed. You finished your hair and makeup with a few minutes left until you had to leave, spending them sending pictures to the group chat for approval, making sure your shoes matched your outfit and your socks weren’t pulled up too high. Kirishima sent a thumbs up emoji and a compliment and you were out the door, triple checking the stove was off even though you hadn’t used it today, gripping your keys nervously as you locked the door and made your way to your car.
The drive was short, and you spent it listening to your favorite songs of the week that hyped you up, turning the volume up and singing along as you tried to calm your nerves. It’ll be fine, its just one dinner. The date is what you make of it, go in with a positive attitude and an open mind. You repeated your thoughts like a mantra, thoughtlessly mouthing along to the song playing as you pulled into the parking lot of the restaurant.
It wasn’t dark yet, the summer sky just turning a soft orange, but the streetlights were on nonetheless, illuminating the almost empty lot. You pulled into a spot next to a seemingly empty car, checking your phone once you parked.
It was 5-till, and you flipped down the mirror to check your makeup, applying lipstick and double checking the contents of your purse. Wallet, keys, lipstick, pepper spray, makeup wipe, EpiPen, breath mints, tampon, condom. You nodded as you ticked off each item in your mind, you had everything you needed, your phone was fully charged, and you looked good. You exhaled, you got this, you smiled to yourself as you got out of your car, double checking it was locked before turning to walk towards the restaurant, only to stop when you noticed the man standing in front of you, smiling nervously when your eyes met.
Your eyes widened slightly and your hand instinctively sought out the pepper spray in your purse, keeping it hidden for now as you took a half-step back. Noticing your wariness, the blonde’s eyes widen frantically, holding his hands up defensively as he takes a few steps back, widening the space between you. “Ah, sorry! You’re (Y/N) right? Kirishima showed me a picture of you a few days ago, I’m Kaminari!”
You relax immediately, your lips curling into a sheepish smile as the apprehension leaves your features. He relaxed as well, bringing his hands back to his side as he took a step forward, making sure to still give you room. “Oh! Sorry, you just startled me there. Kirishima did not do me the favor of letting me know what you looked like beforehand.” He nodded in understanding as you approached, joining him on the sidewalk, much closer this time. You noticed a faint tint to his cheeks as you head into the restaurant, and you were already glad you agreed to go on this date.
_
You laugh, only to choke on your drink, coughing and hitting your chest before laughing even harder. You took another sip, grinning at the blonde sitting across from you. The two of you got along great, you had a similar sense of humor and plenty of shared tastes. It had been over an hour, but it felt like you just got there. You roll your eyes playfully at his joke about ‘giving you something else to choke on’ replying that an inch or two isn’t enough to choke you. You snort at the mock-offense on his features when you excuse yourself to the restroom.
When you return your empty plates are gone and Kaminari is smiling smugly. You raise an eyebrow and narrow your eyes jokingly. “What did you do now?” He scoffs, “You act like I did something bad! How you wound me so!” You roll your eyes at his dramatic cry, still waiting for an answer. “Well, I’ll have you know I took the liberty of ordering your favorite for dessert.” The smug look returns and your eyebrow joins the other in surprise, you lean forward, resting your chin in your hand as you watch the blonde.
“Oh? And what might that be?” Kaminari smirks and says with unwavering confidence, “Blueberry cobbler, duh.” You have to cover your mouth to keep yourself from laughing too loudly. His eyebrows pinch slightly, not sure of your reaction. “Who told you that? Bakugo?” You say it jokingly, but his silence is enough of an answer. You wince slightly, not expecting it to be true. You sigh and smile amusedly at the blonde across from you. “I’m allergic to blueberries Kaminari.”
He blanched at your words, a mix of embarrassment and mortification crossing his face. “Please tell me you’re kidding.” You smiled sympathetically and pulled your EpiPen out of your purse. “’friad not. But don’t worry about it! It’s sweet that you asked them about what I liked, really. I can bring my share of the cobbler back with me, I’m sure they’ll eat it.” To make matters worse, the waiter brought the dessert out as you comforted him, and smiled apologetically at the waiter when Kaminari asked for two boxes and the bill. You were worrying that he was too embarrassed to continue the date, thinking of ways to get back at your roommate when his hand touched yours gently, bringing you out of your thoughts. “I figured we could get some ice cream? Non-toxic this time I promise.” You grin and nod, shoving your card toward the waiter when he comes back, much to your dates dismay. “You can get the bill next time.” You say with a wink, as if you weren’t about to go to another location.
After dropping leftovers off in your cars, the two of you walk a few blocks to a creamery, getting your respective ice cream cones and then walking to the nearby park, sitting on the swings. You gently swing as the two of you talk about random things, almost dropping your cone multiple times from laughing. After treats had been consumed and wrappers discarded, you head back to your cars, walking closer than before.
You brush shoulders a few times before you loop your arm through his, hugging it to your chest as you tangle your fingers with his, glancing at him to make sure it was okay. You flush slightly when you catch him looking at you with an adoration filled gaze, he clears his throat and looks ahead, squeezing your hand in reassurance.
You arrive at your cars all too quickly, and you untangle yourself from him, kissing his cheek gently as you thanked him for tonight. You happily exchange numbers before parting ways, and you sigh when you close the car door, starting your car. You glance at the box in the passenger seat, grateful for the otherwise deadly blue fruit.

This is a Soap Opera | A Shrimp Gremlin Villain!Stephen fluff/angst fic
A/n: why is everything i write just fluff/angst? why not right? i tried to make this one kind of funny too lmao, ft. Steve being a little bitch (so this isn’t Steve friendly) and i have nothing against natasha i just needed someone else to be rude and i don’t love how she treats Tony
The Avengers’ Compound (Upstate NY), 4:31pm
Stephen stumbled blearily through the portal, a few disjointed thoughts rattling around in his mind like loose change. He had to find Tony and he was in need of a hug, nothing else was worth a damn in that moment.
Once he saw the genius, he sat and allowed himself to go limp, collapsing into Tony’s arms.
“I’ve taken no less than six (6) fucking Advil today, I can’t,” Stephen complained.
In his tired stupor, he chose to overlook the open hostility of the other Avengers in the room, snuggling closer to Tony. It also didn’t dawn on him, until a few moments later, that almost none of them knew that he and Tony were still together.
So yeah! That was kind of awkward.
Tony hummed, massaging Stephen’s scalp with the lightest grounding pressure. “Have you been drinking any actual water today, or just lots of tea?”
“We’re in the middle of a meeting—”
“Which can wait,” Tony replied. Stephen didn’t know who he was even talking to, he didn’t bother looking up. “Steph?”
Stephen shrugged. “Both. Probably more tea, though.”
“Not surprising. Why don’t you lay down?” Tony suggested, his voice soft. “Your lack of sleep might be catching up to you… sound familiar?”
Some discontented muttering broke out in the room, but Stephen ignored it. Despite the fact that 70% of the people in the room hated him, Stephen still felt loved and warm in Tony’s presence.
Tony ignored the muttering as well. “Don’t fall asleep on me now. Come on, bed.”
Stephen felt Tony gently maneuvering him into a standing position and leading him from the conference room.
“Stark, we’re in the middle of a meeting!” Steve snapped.
Stephen winced at his volume, pressing himself against Tony’s back and hiding his head on his shoulder
“Be quiet Steve. It’s not like this meeting is a big deal, nobody’s even taking minutes,” Tony replied. “I’ll come back, but pardon me for prioritizing my boyfriend’s health over this get together.”
The door to the room remained open as Stephen and Tony walked down the hallway, allowing them to hear Steve ranting about how nobody took his meetings seriously.
“Thor, you’re supposed to be taking minutes!” Steve yelled.
Inside the conference room, Thor shrugged. “But ‘Days of our Lives’ is on.”
“I work with a bunch of idiots. Some more likeable than others,” Tony commented, opening the door to his room.
Okay, it was more like his own wing of the building. Why shouldn’t it be? Tony built it and owned it, and the Avengers were famously bad for his work-life balance. Stephen was grateful that he could sleep in peace, especially once Tony blocked entry into the wing. He laid on Tony’s bed, the Cloak wrapping around him like a blanket as he disappeared in a pile of pillows.
Tony put a glass of water on the nightstand and sat beside Stephen.
“Sorry for bursting in. Now they know,” Stephen said. “If they didn’t before, I mean.”
“I care more about you,” Tony replied softly. “I also don’t give what most of them think. Their responses won’t matter much, the people who really care us and love us are supportive and happy for us.”
Stephen leaned back further into the pillows on the bed. “I’m lucky to have you, you know?”
Tony smirked. “Yeah, you are.”
“Tony!” Stephen gave him an affectionate push.
“I’m kidding. I love you,” Tony replied, kissing the crown of Stephen’s head. “You know you talk about shrimp in your sleep, right?”
“It’s good luck,” Stephen said with a yawn. “I love you too. I wish you could stay.”
“I’ll be back soon,” Tony promised. “Riposati, amore.”
Stephen nodded. “FRIDAY, how about some Food Network as background noise?”
FRIDAY turned on the TV, adding a pleasant, “It’s nice to see you today, Sire Shrimp.”
Tony rolled his eyes at the nickname, giving Stephen one last fond look before closing the door and heading back to the meeting. He wasn’t surprised to see the whole team talking about him, a stern look on Steve’s face. Thor, who was still watching “Days of our Lives,” was now consequently weeping with his head on Bruce’s shoulder.
So yeah, this meeting really wasn’t a big deal.
“Were you going to TELL us that you’re a no good, double crossing traitor?!” Steve snapped.
“Get out of my face,” Tony replied, pushing past him and returning to his seat between Rhodey and Thor. “What I do after hours is none of your business, and it’s not up to you to tell me who I am and am not allowed to date. Stephen and I never broke up after he left the team, I never promised we would! Furthermore I really love him and it’s in my best interest and great for my happiness to continue our relationship. Does anyone have questions?”
Natasha raised her hand. “Did you think we didn’t notice you were less pleasant to us? Strange makes you unpleasant.”
“Stephen treats me like I’m more than just an ATM.” Tony replied.
“How is Tony giving our secrets to some shrimp-obsessed VILLAIN permissible?!” Steve snapped, speaking to the room at large.
“What secrets? You mean that there are more things you haven’t told me? You don’t want Stephen knowing that you bully and belittle me whenever you feel like it?” Tony replied.
Steve was silent, angrily looking between Tony and the team. “Does anyone else see what’s wrong with this?”
Clint, Scott, and Natasha raised their hands.
“I don’t think we need to vote to agree that Stark’s conduct calls for immediate removal from this team,” Steve continued.
“You need me more than I need you,” Tony said. He was calm, despite the fact that his fists were shaking. “After all, who’s going to give you free stuff at your beck and call if you let me go? Where are you going to get all of your shiny suits and arrows?”
“As the leader of this team, I move to kick Tony out,” Steve declared.
“What is this, a playground clique? Who put you in charge?” Rhodey muttered, loud enough that only Tony could hear. To the group, he said: “We have to have a vote to bench anyone, as stated in the new Accords. And given that those Accords state that you are NOT the leader of this team, you absolutely cannot bench Tony. I say that as his best friend and as someone who ranks higher than you and earned it. I move to dismiss this meeting.”
“Oh thank god,” Tony quipped.
“But—”
“Enough. We’re done here.”
Tony was out of his seat and down the hall before anyone could say another word.
++++
5:49pm
Stephen was a light sleeper, always had been, and woke up the minute he felt Tony’s presence in the room. Shelving the dream he was having about eating shrimp on the beach, Stephen reached out for Tony and pulled him close.
“You’re shivering,” Stephen whispered, shifting so that he and Tony were both under the Cloak. “What’s wrong?”
“The rest of the meeting was just a shitshow, that’s all. It’s not important right now. How are you feeling?” Tony asked.
“A little better. I want to avoid taking any more Advil if I can, so I’ve just been trying to rest. I know I’ve fallen asleep a few times,” Stephen replied, hugging Tony closer and playing with his hair. “Now it’s your turn to rest. I’m okay, I promise, and I don’t need or want anything from you right now. I just want you.”
Tony sighed, melting into Stephen’s hug. He didn’t bother to hide the fact that he was upset, pressing his head against Stephen’s chest as he sought warmth and love.
“Hey,” Stephen began. “Let your shoulders drop, okay? It’s just us now, you can close your eyes.”
Stephen’s voice was effortlessly soothing, and Tony followed his instructions without hesitation.
“How was your day?” Tony asked, his voice already getting gravelly with tiredness.
Stephen smiled and kissed him softly. “It was fine. I tripped going down the stairs and dropped a plate, and Wong had to bribe me to take a break when I got to my sixth hour of studying.”
“No wonder your head hurts,” Tony remarked, snuggling closer to Stephen. “What did he bribe you with?”
“Coconut shrimp and talk show reruns,” Stephen admitted.
“Oh of course, because the way to a man’s heart is through reality television,” Tony said.
“The way to this man’s heart is being Tony Stark,” Stephen replied.
Tony blushed as red as a strawberry, tucking his head under the cloak. “Stop that.”
“I’m just saying!” Stephen bantered.
“How dare you flirt with me while we both have headaches!” Tony snickered. “Smooth bastard.”

Spirit Touched - Chapter 6: Refugee
Chapter 1   Chapter 2   Chapter 3   Chapter 4   Chapter 5   Chapter 6   AO3
Uhhh I actually updated on AO3 like two weeks ago, I just procrastinated putting it up here on Tumblr for some reason.  But here it is.  Angst, Zuko doing serious soul searching, and Toph continuing to just be the best Toph she can be.  Enjoy.
Again, this fic is inspired by @muffinlance‘s fic Salvage and fanart that @agent-jaselin did of it.
——————————————————————————————
Water sloshed over the rim of the bucket Zuko was carrying.  The tribesman Zuko was following stopped to look back at him.
“Nuktuk, if this is too difficult for you, you can go back to your tent and play,” the tribesman said.  Zuko scowled.  The troops at Chameleon Bay had accepted him with open arms, though they didn’t know his proper age, and as such, tended to talk down to him and refuse to let him help with chores.
“No, I’ve got it,” he insisted.  The tribesman shrugged.
“All right, if you say so.”  There was a commotion off in the distance. “Huh.  I wonder what’s-”  Tuluk came running over.  “Tuluk, is something going on?”
“Yes.  The Chief is handling it, but Nuktuk needs to go back to his tent for now,” Tuluk said.
              “What’s happening?” Zuko asked.
“We have a visitor,” Tuluk replied.  Zuko frowned.
              “What kind of visitor?”
“You’ll find out once things calm down.”
              “But-”
“No buts.”  Tuluk handed Zuko’s bucket of water to the tribesman, then took Zuko’s hand and led him away.  Zuko looked over his shoulder.  He couldn’t see much in the chaos, but caught a glimpse of red.
-----
Zuko didn’t find out what had happened until much later, when Toklo came to his tent to bring him to dinner.
“Something happened earlier.  What?” Zuko asked immediately.
“It was crazy, little bro.  A Fire Nation soldier walked into camp and asked to join our side.”
              “Who?”
“That’s the craziest part!  General Iroh!  The Dragon of the West!”  Toklo shook his head.  “Can you believe it?”
“Yes.  Uncle said he would meet up with me again,” Zuko said matter-of-factly.  Toklo facepalmed.
“That’s right!  He’s your uncle!  Okay, it’s a bit less crazy now.  But how did he know where we were?”  He paused. “What do you mean, he said he would meet up with you?”
“When Hakoda and Kustaa took me to see a healer, Uncle spotted us.  He asked to come aboard the Akhlut.  The Chief turned him down, but at told Uncle where we were headed, so that he could meet us,” Zuko rattled off.
“Why didn’t you tell me before?” Toklo demanded.
              “I was sick.”
“Fair enough.”  Toklo took Zuko’s hand.  “Time for dinner!”
“No, I want to see Uncle first,” Zuko said, yanking his hand free of Toklo’s hold.
“I don’t think-” Toklo started.  Before he could finish the sentence, Zuko bolted out of the tent.  “Hey!”
Zuko made a beeline for the largest tent, which served as a command center.  Uncle might not be there, but Hakoda or Bato should be, and they would take him to Uncle. Right?  The moment he ducked inside the tent, Zuko’s eyes landed on Uncle.
“Uncle!” Zuko shrieked happily.  He ran over to the retired general.  Uncle scooped him into a tight embrace.
“Nephew, it is so good to see you again.”  Uncle held Zuko at arm’s distance.  “You look much healthier now.”  Zuko beamed.  Uncle set him back on the ground.  “This was not the best move to make, however.”
              “What?”
“Chief Hakoda informed me before of your cover as a Water Tribe war child.  The way you just behaved, while very heartwarming, was not in character for Nuktuk.”
              “I don’t care.”
“You should, nephew.  Keeping up appearances is very important, particularly in your situation,” Uncle said patiently.
“Luckily, I’m the only other person in the tent,” Hakoda spoke up.  Zuko looked over, realizing he was there for the first time.
“Where is Uncle going to stay?” Zuko asked.
“Eventually, with you,” Uncle replied.  “Chief Hakoda and I were just discussing our plans.”
“The story we’ll be telling is that General Iroh, devastated by the loss of his nephew, had his eyes opened to the reality of the war.  As such, he has arrived at the camp to switch sides and offer his help.”
“Like the best of lies, it contains some truth,” Uncle said, nodding.  “I won’t be allowed to be around you until Chief Hakoda’s men trust me.  So I am very glad you sought me out on your own.”
“Toklo told me you were here.”
              “Toklo would be…?”
              “My friend.”
“Ah.”  Uncle’s face creased with a broad, warm smile.  “What a wonderful thing you hear you say.  You should go find this friend of yours and have dinner with him.”
              “But-” Zuko started.
“Don’t worry,” Hakoda said.  “General Iroh will be here for a while.”
-----
“You’re very articulate for your age, Nuktuk,” gushed one of the Southern tribesmen that Zuko had yet to know by name.  Zuko smiled politely.  He bowed.
“Thank you,” he said.  The tribesman chuckled and ruffled his hair.
“Keep up your firebending practice, kiddo.  Who knows, maybe you’ll be the first Water Tribe firebending Master.”  Zuko’s smile became more forced.  He didn’t mean to be caught firebending, but Uncle had begun to teach him firebending again, and someone had witnessed one of the lessons.  Since then, tribesmen approached him near constantly, curious about the firebending Water Tribe toddler.
“You should probably get back to work, Kenai,” Panuk said.  Ah, the man’s name was Kenai.  “Otherwise, you’ll get your ass beat for slacking.”
“Watch your language around the kid!” Kenai said in shock.  Panuk laughed.  He gave Zuko an affectionate noogie.
“The kid spent months on a ship.  He knows just about every swear under the sun,” Panuk said.  Kenai shook his head disapprovingly.
“Geez.  Well, see you later, Nuktuk.  And you too, Panuk.”  Kenai walked away, whistling.  Zuko smirked at Panuk.
“You’re an afterthought,” he teased.  Panuk laughed.
“Only because Kenai’s a big brother.  He can’t resist cute little kids.”
“That explains why he felt the need to talk to me,” Zuko said thoughtfully.  “I thought word had spread about me.”
“Oh, it definitely has.  There’s no one who doesn’t know who you are.”  Panuk poked Zuko playfully.  Zuko slapped the hand away, laughing.               “Wait…you guys have a kid here?” a voice said.  The hairs on the back of Zuko’s neck rose.  That voice…  He turned his head ever so slightly.  His eyes widened.  It was him.
“Huh, I guess someone doesn’t know who you are,” Panuk remarked, looking as well.  He frowned.  “He must be new.”
“Sokka,” Zuko ground out.  Panuk’s head whipped around to stare at Zuko.
“That’s the Chief’s son?” he asked.  Zuko nodded, his jaw clenched.  “I see it now.  They look pretty similar.”
“Why is he here?” Zuko snarled.
“Probably because, like I said, he’s the Chief’s son,” Panuk drawled.  “I wonder if the Avatar’s with him.”
“That’s Nuktuk,” Hakoda informed Sokka.  They were far enough away that there was no chance Sokka could recognize Zuko, but Zuko’s heart still pounded in his chest. His fingers twitched.  He couldn’t decide whether he wanted to run at Sokka or away from him.  “We found him in a destroyed village on our way out of the South Pole.  He’s been with us ever since.”
“Really?  He’s just a kid!  How old is he, two?”
“Four,” Hakoda said calmly.  Panuk reached for Zuko’s hand.
“I think it’s time to take you somewhere else, little warrior.”  The moment his hand touched Zuko’s, he let out a soft yelp of pain.  “What was that about?”  Zuko looked up at Panuk.
              “What?”
              “You burned me, squirt.”
“Oh.  Whoops.” Zuko resumed glaring at Sokka, who was still arguing with Hakoda.
“Wh- you’d take a four-year-old on your ship, but not your own son?  Who, I’ll remind you, was a lot older than four when you left?”
“Sokka…”  Hakoda’s voice was weary.  “You don’t want to be in that kid’s boots.  He’s seen things no child should ever see.”
“Oh, you think I haven’t?  I traveled with the Avatar!”  Sokka’s shouts were beginning to attract attention.  Zuko could feel the control he’d worked so hard to cultivate slipping; droplets of flame fell off his fingers, lighting the grass on fire.
-----
Iroh, while relaxing in the tent he shared with Zuko, heard bickering outside.  Curious, he exited the tent.  He took in the scene.  Panuk and Zuko stood nearby, Zuko staring at something and Panuk stomping on smoking grass. Small flames were dancing around Zuko’s fingers, his good eye squinting in a glare to match his bad one.  It didn’t take a genius to figure out the cause of Zuko’s irritation.  Some distance away, but growing closer, were the people he had heard bickering: Chief Hakoda and Sokka, the Water Tribe boy that had accompanied the Avatar.
The Water Tribe boy who, in his first encounter with Zuko, had hit him in the head with a boomerang.
“It’s wonderful to see a familiar face,” Iroh said warmly, walking over to Sokka and Hakoda.  Behind him, he could hear Panuk finally ushering Zuko away, out of sight of the chief’s son.  Sokka stared at him.
“Hang on, you’re that one guy!” he said, eloquently. Iroh smiled.
              “Yes, I am.”
“What are you doing at a Water Tribe camp?”
“After what happened at the North Pole, I could no longer stand by and allow my nation’s war to continue,” Iroh said simply. Sokka crossed his arms.
“Really,” he said flatly.  “After everything the Fire Nation’s done, killing a fish was what made you realize they were evil?”  Something in his voice quivered a bit, like he didn’t believe the loss of the Moon Spirit was as minimal as he was trying to make it sound.  Iroh bowed his head slightly.
“Yes.  I spent some time traveling the Earth Kingdom and eventually came to join this encampment, with the blessing of none other than your father,” Iroh said.  His words were technically true, but left out important details.  The kind of lying Iroh preferred to do.
“You trusted him, Dad?” Sokka asked.  Chief Hakoda nodded.  “Why?”
“People I trust spoke for him,” Chief Hakoda said simply.
              “Like who?”
“Master Pakku of the Northern Water Tribe, for one.”
“Wait.”  Sokka stared at Iroh.  “You know Master Sourpuss?”  Iroh chuckled.  Sourpuss was certainly an apt description for his old friend.
“Yes.  I have for some time.”
              “How?”
“That’s a rather long story, and not important,” Iroh said smoothly.  “Let me guess, you, your friends, and the Avatar have arrived at Ba Sing Se?”
              “Yeah…”
“Would you be so kind as to allow me to walk with you? I would like to hear the wonderful stories of your adventures.”  Sokka looked uncertain, but after a moment, nodded.
“Sure.  But you better not be sending information back to the Fire Lord!” Sokka snapped. Hakoda rolled his eyes.  Iroh merely smiled and nodded.
              “Of course.”
-----
Bato found Zuko wandering around the camp, peering into tents with a confused expression.
“Are you looking for something, little warrior?” he asked.  Zuko looked up at him, brow furrowed.
              “Where’s Uncle?”
“He went with Sokka and Aang to Ba Sing Se,” Bato replied.  Zuko crossed his arms.
“Stupid Avatar.  He’s my uncle,” Zuko muttered.  Bato covered his mouth, poorly smothering a snicker at the firebender’s immature behavior.  Zuko stomped his foot.  “Don’t laugh!”
“Relax.  Come on, it’s time for your nap, anyways.”  Bato took Zuko’s hand and led him back to the tent Zuko shared with Iroh. Toklo was already there, looking for Zuko.
“Where’d you run off to, little brother?” Toklo teased.
“I was looking for Uncle,” Zuko mumbled.  He let out a small yawn.
“When Iroh gets back, I’ll send him your way,” Bato promised.  Zuko nodded. Toklo led him into the tent for his nap.
Zuko was still napping when chaos erupted at the encampment.  Bato and Hakoda were in the midst of going over battle plans, only for Katara to burst in the head tent.  The excitement Hakoda felt at seeing his daughter was quickly subdued when Sokka came in close behind, carrying the unnervingly still body of the Avatar.
“What…happened?” Hakoda croaked, staring at Aang.
“Lightning,” huffed a short girl, who, judging by her milky eyes, was blind.  Katara laid Aang on the ground and held glowing water over his body.  Her forehead was drenched in sweat, her hands shaking.  Sokka didn’t seem to be doing much better.  “The Fire Princess struck Aang with lightning.”  A man in extravagant, expensive clothes poked his head into the tent curiously.
“What should I do?” he asked.  The short girl huffed again.
“Could someone entertain the Earth King?” she asked, turning her sightless eyes in the direction of Hakoda and Bato.
“…Earth King?” Hakoda and Bato said simultaneously.
              “Kids, what happened?” Hakoda repeated.
              “I told you, lightning.”
“I need more information than that.”
“After I’ve stabilized Aang, we can talk, Dad, but right now, I need to focus,” Katara snapped.  Hakoda bit back an instinct to scold her for her tone.  She was under an immense amount of stress; it was more than understandable she’d be on edge.  Sokka got up from where he was crouching at Aang’s side.
“I can explain.  It’s better if we leave the tent while Katara heals Aang.  Toph, stay here.”  The blind girl, apparently named Toph, nodded.  Sokka, Hakoda, and Bato left the tent.
“What in the world is that thing?” Bato asked, staring at the strange creature before them.
              “It’s a bear,” Sokka answered.
              “Platypus-bear?”
“No, just a bear.  Weird, I know.”  Sokka sighed. “He’s the Earth King’s best friend or something like that, so the bear came with us when Ba Sing Se fell.”
“Ba Sing Se fell?” Hakoda asked in an undertone. Sokka’s head drooped.
“Yeah.  Princess Azula staged a coup.  We got out with the Earth King and his bear, but during the fight, Aang was struck by lightning.”
“What about Iroh?” Bato pried.  Sokka slumped further.
“He was taken prisoner.  We had the one good firebender in the world on our side, and we let him get caught.”
“I’m sure Iroh isn’t the only good firebender,” Hakoda said, resting a hand on Sokka’s shoulder.  His gaze fell on Zuko and Iroh’s tent, where the toddler was, presumably, still fast asleep.
“I don’t know, Dad.  It really seems like he is.”  Sokka rubbed his eyes, drawing Hakoda’s attention to just how tired his son seemed.  Hakoda yearned to just tell Sokka to go to bed.  But if Ba Sing Se had truly fallen, they had no time to waste.  They needed to abandon the encampment and set sail immediately.  Hakoda squeezed Sokka’s shoulder.
“Stay here with your sister.  Bato, spread the word that we need to leave now. I’ll take care of Nuktuk.”  Bato’s eyes widened.
“The kid is not going to be happy.”
“That’s why I’ll be breaking the news to him.” Hakoda squeezed Sokka’s shoulder one more time and set off for Zuko and Iroh’s tent.
-----
The tent didn’t burn down.  But only barely.  Zuko’s initial, destructive meltdown upon hearing what had happened to Iroh exhausted him so much that he passed out soon after.  It was easy enough to smuggle the sleeping toddler aboard the Akhlut without Hakoda’s children or his children’s friends noticing.  Keeping up the secrecy was far more difficult.
“Why won’t you let them see you?” Hakoda asked. Weary from stress, his voice came out harsher than he intended.  Zuko flinched slightly.  “I’m sorry, Zuko, I didn’t mean to say it that way.  But you know they won’t recognize you, right?”
“They might,” Zuko mumbled.  “I can’t risk it.  I’ll be humiliated.”
“…Fine.  But you’ll have to ask Toklo or Panuk to help you move around the ship without being seen. I’m busy.”  The Akhlut, though beloved, would need to be abandoned. There were too many Fire Navy ships now. As such, they had plans to take a Fire Nation ship themselves.  Hakoda had been working on those very plans when Zuko entered his cabin, wanting attention.
Of course he wants attention, his life has been upheaved and he’s lost his uncle again.  Hakoda pinched the bridge of his nose and took a calming breath.  He could hear Kya’s voice, scolding him for not explaining why he was saying “no” to a toddler.  Young children will cooperate more if they have an explanation. Zuko is no exception.  Explain things to him.
“Once we’ve captured a new ship, I might be able to spend some more time with you.  At the very least, you won’t have to hide.  I imagine we can find you your own room.”  Hakoda forced a smile.  “Would you like that?”
“Maybe,” Zuko mumbled.  He cocked his head curiously.  “We’re capturing a ship?”
“You aren’t.  But the rest of us are.  The Fire Nation is sending their Navy to Ba Sing Se, to prevent any early uprisings. The Akhlut stands out. It’s best if we blend in.”  Zuko nodded slowly.  “I understand if you feel uncomfortable with this, but it’s our only option.”  Zuko nodded again.
“Can I…stay in here?” he asked.  Hakoda stifled a sigh.
He’s a lonely child.  He’s always been. Hakoda nodded.
“If you stay quiet, yes.”  Zuko beamed.  He walked over to Hakoda and climbed onto the chief’s lap.  As Hakoda worked on the plans, Zuko occasionally piped up with a comment about Fire Navy ships.  The intermittent inputs became further and further apart.  When it had been some time since Zuko last spoke, Hakoda looked down at his lap.
The former Fire Nation Prince had fallen asleep, lulled by the late hour, gentle swaying of the boat, and Hakoda’s body heat.
-----
They were having another awkwardly silent meal when Toph finally said something she’d had on her mind the minute they all boarded a metal ship, allowing her to “see” again.
“What’s the deal with the kid?” she asked. Hakoda casually set his chopsticks down. To someone who could see, no doubt he appeared untroubled.  But to someone who could see, he was nervous.  The chief’s heartrate had sped up immediately.
“There are a lot of children on board,” Hakoda said calmly.  “Namely, the three of you and Aang.”
“No, there’s someone here even younger than us,” Toph said.  “They’re running around on the deck right now.”  Katara rose from her seat, presumably to glance out the window that opened onto the deck.
              “Toph’s right,” Katara said.
“No need to sound so surprised,” Toph grumbled, pretending to be offended.
“I wasn’t-”  Katara huffed.  She sat back down.  “That looked like a little boy, younger than some of the kids were when we left the village.”  Hakoda sighed.
“I was hoping to keep him hidden from you.”
              “Why?” Katara asked.
“You shouldn’t be distracted from your current mission.”
              Lie.
“Not to mention, he’s rather shy.”
              Truth.
              “What’s his name?” Toph asked.
              “Nuktuk.”
              Lie.
“We found him in a mostly destroyed village as we were leaving the South Pole.”
              Lie.
“Wait, that’s the kid that I saw in camp that one day,” Sokka said suddenly.
              “Yes.”
              Truth.
“How old is he?” Katara asked.
“Four,” Hakoda replied.  Toph’s eyes widened slightly.  That hadn’t felt like a full lie nor a full truth.  She settled her expression to be neutral again.  “Please don’t seek him out.  I know you might want to spend time with him, particularly you, Katara, but like I said, he’s shy.  And he’s going through some things.”
“Like what?” Toph asked.  She picked up her chopsticks.
“Well, he lost his uncle during the fall of Ba Sing Se.  He’s been very upset about it.”
“Poor thing,” Katara murmured.  Toph picked at her food idly.
              Truth.
-----
The ocean was boring for a blind earthbender. Toph didn’t spend any time on deck if she could avoid it.  Not when sudden gusts of wind might try to blow her away.  Their only airbender was out of commission, so it wouldn’t be easy to bring her back.
At the casual reminder of Aang’s state, Toph felt a twinge of sadness.  She shook it off, refocusing on her mission.  There was a toddler on this ship using a fake name and a fake backstory. Sure, it wasn’t as fun to investigate as the mysteries of Ba Sing Se, but it was better than staring at water she couldn’t see.
Toph made her way belowdeck, past the mess hall and infirmary, finally coming to a stop outside of a small cabin.  Inside the room, sitting cross-legged on the floor, was “Nuktuk”.  She opened the door.  The boy sprang to his feet instantly.  A wave of heat washed over Toph.  She cocked her head curiously, recognizing the sensation as that of fire.
“That’s why the chief doesn’t want anyone to know about you,” she said calmly.  “You’re a firebender.”  The boy’s heartrate doubled.
“How- you- but you’re blind!” he finally squeaked. Toph entered the room and closed the door behind her.
“Yeah, but I can still probably see better than you, Sparky.”  The boy let out another squeak of protest at the nickname.  “Who are you, really?”
              “I’m- I’m Nuktuk.”
              Lie.
“Who are you?” the boy asked.  Toph sat on the floor, her feet flush against the metal so she could keep track of the kid’s heartbeat.
“You know what?  I’ll tell you the truth if you tell me the truth,” she said.  “That seems like a fair trade to me.”  The boy wavered.  After a moment, he sat across from her.  The heat faded, presumably because he had put out whatever flames he’d created.
“How’d you know I lied?” he asked quietly.
“That’s for me to know, not you.”
              “Hmph.”
“What’s your real name?” Toph asked again.
              “…I can’t tell you.”
              “Can’t or don’t want to?”
              “The- the second one.”
              Truth.
“I’ll tell you the truth now.  I’m Toph.  Why don’t you want to tell me your real name?”
“Then you’ll know who I am.  And that’s embarrassing.  Also…you wouldn’t like me.”
              Truth.
“All right.  Since you told the truth again, here’s another from me.  I knew you lied because I’m an earthbender.”  The boy huffed quietly, like he didn’t believe her. “Why wouldn’t I like you if I knew who you were?  I already figured out that you were a firebender, and I’m not exactly trying to attack you or anything.”  The boy stayed silent, but fidgeted slightly.  The temperature in the room rose.
All right, touchy subject.  Moving on.
“The Chief said you lost your uncle when Ba Sing Se fell.”
              “…Yeah.”
“Was he in the city or something?  How’d you know you lost him?”
“People- people saw it happen.  And they told other people.  And the other people told me.”
“Who?  The only people that I know of who were able to escape to the camp were the people on Appa. Appa is-”
“I know who Appa is,” the boy groused.
              Truth.
“Well, like I said, only the people on Appa made it to the camp.  And none of us would have known some random firebender’s uncle.”  Something clicked into place.  “Unless…”  The boy’s heartrate, which had slowed somewhat, picked up again.  “Was your uncle Iroh?”
“No!” the boy blurted out immediately.
              Lie.
“Iroh said he had a nephew,” Toph said, thinking out loud.  The boy’s heart sped even faster.  “I never met his nephew, but Katara and Sokka and Aang did.  Apparently, he chased them around the world for a long time, before he disappeared without a trace.  The only problem is, they said he was sixteen.  How old are you?”
              “Four.”
Again, that weird “not a full lie, not a full truth” thing.  But the boy seemed to think it was more of a lie than the Chief did.  Not to mention, Toph hadn’t met a lot of children, but she felt like someone who was actually four wouldn’t be more eloquent than Sokka.
“…Zuko?” Toph asked quietly.  The boy sprung to his feet, his heart beating so fast, Toph was surprised he didn’t keel over then and there.
              “How- you-” he spluttered.
“So you are Zuko,” Toph said.  The boy – Zuko – stayed standing.  “Spirits, what happened to you, if you’re-”  Toph made a vague gesture in Zuko’s direction. “-this?”
“You answered it,” Zuko said.  He sat down again.  “Spirits.”  A scowl shone through his irritated tone.
“Spirits turned you into a little kid?”
              “Yes.”
“Huh.  That stinks,” Toph said casually.  Zuko let out a soft snort.
“It does.”  He fidgeted.  “You- you can’t tell anyone about it, okay?  I’ll die if that Water Tribe boy finds out what I’ve been reduced to.”
Truth.  Man, he is really embarrassed by this.
“Why are you so embarrassed?” Toph asked.  “I mean, you didn’t do it.  The spirits did it.”
“It’s still- it’s-” Zuko was spluttering again. “You’re what, ten?”
              “Twelve.”
“Does the Water Tribe boy treat you like a kid, even though you’re younger than him?”
“No.”  Toph grinned viciously.  “He knows I’d kick his ass.”
“I don’t have that luxury.  He might be a non-bender, but I’m…”  Zuko cleared his throat.  “I don’t have access to my full abilities currently, and I’m much smaller than usual.  Both the Water Tribe children would harass me for it, but the boy would never let me live it down.”
“I getcha.”  Toph got up.  “No worries, Sparky, your secret’s safe with me.”
              “…Really?” Zuko asked.  Toph nodded.
“I get it.  I’ve been treated like shit for things I can’t control.  I’m not about doing that to others.”
“I’ve heard you teasing your teammates,” Zuko said doubtfully.
“Yeah, over things they can control, like their terrible jokes.  You can’t control what the spirits did to you.  You don’t deserve to be messed with for it.  Especially since you seem like a nice enough kid.”
              Zuko spluttered again.
              Toph grinned.
“Good luck turning back into a teenager.”  Toph headed for the door.  Just as she opened it, Zuko mumbled something, quiet enough that she barely heard.
              “Thanks.”
-----
Running footsteps sounded in the hall.  Curious, Zuko cracked open the door to his room and peered out.  His eyes widened.
              The Avatar was awake.
And judging by his clumsiness, either disoriented from how long he spent asleep or drunk.  After the Avatar had stumbled out of Zuko’s view, he closed the door again.
-----
The door to Zuko’s room slowly creaked open. Zuko jumped to his feet, abandoning the Pai Sho board he was practicing with.  The intruder blinked at Zuko owlishly.
              “…This isn’t my room.”
“No.  It’s mine,” Zuko said firmly.  The intruder stepped inside.  A shiver ran down Zuko’s spine.  It was the Avatar.  The Avatar approached Zuko and crouched down, smiling warmly at him.
“I didn’t know there was a kid on this ship.”
“I’m not a kid,” Zuko retorted.  The Avatar chuckled.  The serious, uncertain demeanor he’d had when entering seemed to have lessened.
Good.  It’s weird if he’s not annoyingly upbeat.
              “I’m Aang.  What’s your name?”
              “…Nuktuk.”
“Nuktuk.  That’s a really tough name!  I bet you’ll be a great Water Tribe warrior someday!” the Avatar said cheerfully. “Why are you on the ship?”
“I…”  Zuko looked away.  The Avatar let out a soft gasp.  Zuko bit back a curse.  The shadows in the room must have obscured his scar, only for it to become obvious when he’d turned his head.  Surely, the Avatar would figure out who he was.
“Nuktuk, how did you get that scar?” the Avatar asked gently.  Zuko looked at him, surprised.
              He…doesn’t recognize me?
“A…”  Zuko fumbled for a response, then remembered his cover story.  “A bad man.”
“A bad man,” the Avatar repeated.  Zuko nodded.  “Is the bad man why you’re on the ship?”  Zuko nodded again.  “Is your family on the ship?”
“No.  The bad man hurt them.”  Zuko shrugged.  “I’m alone.” The Avatar sat back, horror etched on his face.  Zuko worked furiously to control his own facial expression.  But rather than horrified, he felt indignant.
Really?  The Avatar’s own people were killed.  Is he actually still moved by the tragedies of war, even after witnessing so many? Despite his best attempts to doubt the Avatar’s sincerity, Zuko knew the answer to that question.
The Avatar was deeply affected by every reminder of what war wrought.
“Nuktuk, I’m sorry,” the Avatar said softly.  Zuko blinked, startled.  “It’s- it’s my fault the bad man hurt you and your family, leaving you all alone.  I’m the Avatar.  My responsibility is to prevent innocent people from being hurt, especially innocent little kids like you.”  The Avatar got to his feet, determination shining in his weary gray eyes.  “Don’t worry, I’m going to bring that bad man, and all the other bad men, to justice.”
              “Y-you are?” Zuko squeaked.
Is a literal twelve-year-old going to confront my father?  The Avatar nodded.
“I am.”  The Avatar managed a small smile.  “And just so you know…”  The Avatar trailed off.  He cleared his throat.  “I was the only one left, too.  We’ve got that in common.  And if we’ve got something in common, then we aren’t really alone.”  He ruffled Zuko’s hair.  “Good night, Nuktuk.”  The Avatar left, closing the door gently behind him.
When Panuk checked on Zuko later, to make sure he’d actually gone to bed, the former prince was still staring silently at the door.
-----
The Avatar’s allies were saying their goodbyes to the crew during the night.  It was the best way to avoid detection.
For some reason, Zuko had been brought on deck for the farewell, though he had to be woken up.  He stood next to Bato, still bleary from sleep, hiding the scarred side of his face behind the crewman’s leg.  Even if they saw his scar, it wasn’t likely he’d be recognized, but he didn’t want to risk it.
Toph punched Toklo and Panuk’s shoulders; she had gotten along well with them.  The only other thing she did before boarding the Avatar’s sky bison was look in Zuko’s direction.  She nodded silently.  Zuko returned the gesture, then held himself still as the Water Tribe girl – Katara – walked over to him.  She crouched down to his eye-height and gently stroked his hair.
“It was nice to finally meet you, Nuktuk,” she said sweetly.  Zuko looked away, part of him reeling with how tender her voice could be.
Of course, the only other times she’s spoken with me, we weren’t exactly on good terms.
“Don’t worry, we’re going to get the Avatar and help him take down the Fire Lord.  You’ll be reunited with your uncle before you know it.”
“…Thanks,” Zuko mumbled into Bato’s leg.  Katara’s eyes softened further.
“Katara, come on, stop fussing over the baby,” Sokka shouted from the Avatar’s sky bison.  He had made his goodbyes first.  Katara stood to her full height and embraced her father.
              “Be careful, sweetie,” Hakoda said.
“I’ll do my best.”  Katara broke off the hug.  “We’ll see you on the Day of Black Sun.”  Zuko’s eyes widened.
The solar eclipse? They know about that?
“Yes.  Remember what I told you.”
“Take care of each other,” Katara intoned solemnly. Hakoda smiled and stroked Katara’s cheek.
              “That’s right.”
-----
Zuko watched the sky bison fly away, an uncomfortable churning in his gut.  Without the constant fear of being discovered by the Water Tribe children in the back of his mind, the enormity of his situation came crashing down upon him.
Things had improved for a while, but now?  Now, he was back to square one.  No, even worse than square one.  Uncle wasn’t captured before.  There was at least one holdout in the entire Earth Kingdom before. Zuko could pretend the Avatar was continuing his streak of avoiding real harm before.
None of those were true now.
Zuko slowly sat down on the deck, staring at the metal silently.
“Are you all right?” Hakoda asked.  Zuko shrugged.  “It’s a yes or no answer.”  The boy remained silent.  Hakoda sighed.  “Well, in that case, why don’t you-”
“We know about the solar eclipse,” Zuko blurted out.  The crew, which had begun to resume regular duties after the bison’s departure, froze. Hakoda crouched next to Zuko.
              “By ‘we’, you mean…”
“The Fire Nation.”  Someone swore softly.  “Of course the Fire Nation knows about the solar eclipse!  Firebenders have a vested interest in their ability to firebend!”
“Zuko.”  Zuko looked up at Hakoda.  “Thank you for telling me this.”
“You’re welcome,” Zuko mumbled.  Hakoda got to his feet.
“We’ll need to send a bird immediately to our allies. If the Fire Nation knows about the eclipse, they’ll have prepared for it.”  Hakoda looked at Zuko.  “Right?” Zuko nodded.
“This is going to mess up our plans,” Bato said. Hakoda grinned.
“No, it’s going to make them better.”
“We don’t know what the Fire Nation’s preparations will be like,” Tuluk argued.
“We don’t.”  Hakoda looked at Zuko again.  “But we’ve got someone on board who does.”
“I don’t know if the kid’s willing to turn against his people,” Aake rumbled.  Zuko crossed his arms.
“The kid is right here,” he snapped.  Aake raised an eyebrow.
“Are you willing to turn against your people?” he asked.  The churning in Zuko’s stomach amplified.
My people. Yue had told him not to turn his back on his people.  But if he told the crew how the Fire Nation prepared for the eclipse, he would be doing just that.  Although…would I?  His people weren’t just the Fire Nation anymore.  He’d been helped by all the nations.  Even the Avatar had promised to bring justice to those who had hurt him.
              Zuko touched his scar.
He thought of the 41st Division, the soldiers sent to their deaths as canon fodder.  Surely, ending the war wouldn’t help just the Water Tribes and Earth Kingdom.  The people of the Fire Nation were suffering, too.
Zuko’s hand fell from his face.  The churning in his stomach quieted.  He looked up at Hakoda, his eyes meeting the Chief’s squarely.
“I’m not turning against my people,” he said. “I’m doing my part to end a war that has hurt us all.  I’ll tell you everything I know.”  A proud smile slowly spread across Hakoda’s face.
              “Thank you, son.”
              …Son?
“You can tell me in the morning.  For now, you should go back to sleep,” Hakoda said. Zuko nodded as tiredness abruptly hit him over the head.  He allowed Kustaa to lead him to the infirmary, where his furs were waiting.
The full moon shining down brightened.  Just a bit.

I was tagged in this ask by @inktog - thank you!
I’m not great at tagging other folk, but if you see this and you fancy doing it, consider yourself tagged! Also, by the way, if anyone seeing this really likes being tagged in these kind of things, let me know! I will tag you in future!
This was hard. At first I was like, “I’m not sure I can even name ten relationships I ship”, and then had far too many as soon as I thought about it for more than ten seconds. So here we are. :)
First, list your top 10 ships without reading the questions below.
1.      Luz Noceda / Amity Blight – The Owl House
2.      Harrowhark Nonagesimus / Gideon Nav – The Locked Tomb Series
3.      Sabran / Eadaz du Zāla uq-Nāra – The Priory of the Orange Tree
4.      Caleb Widogast / Essek Theyless – Critical Role Campaign 2
5.      Beauregard Lionett / Jester Lavorre – Critical Role Campaign 2
6.      Harrowhark Nonagesimus / Ianthe Tridentarius – The Locked Tomb Series
7.      Kara Danvers / Lena Luthor – Supergirl
8.      Amity Blight / Boscha – The Owl House
9.      Korra / Asami – The Legend of Korra
10.  Percy / Vexahlia – Critical Role Campaign 1
Then answer the questions.
Do you remember the episode/scene/chapter that you first started shipping 6?
I’m going to be honest, it was from the very beginning of Harrow the Ninth – the Prologue, where we get that amazing moment of Ianthe kneeling down and taking Harrow by the chin. I’m going to quote, because this scene just marched up to my house, kicked my door down and stole my entire mind.
You were shocked into opening your eyes when you felt the girl opposite cup your chin in her hands – her fingers febrile compared to the chilly shock of her gilded metacarpal – and put her meat thumb at the corner of your jaw. For a moment you assumed that you were hallucinating, but that assumption was startled away by the cool nearness of her, of Ianthe Tridentarius on her knees before you in unmistakable supplication. Her pallid hair fell around her face like a veil, and her stolen eyes looked at you with half-beseeching, half-contemptuous despair: blue eyes with deep splotches of light brown, like agate.
Looking deep into the eyes of the cavalier she murdered, you realised, not for the first time, and not willingly, that Ianthe Tridenatrius was beautiful.
Dude.
Have you ever read a fic about 2?
Yup! More than one! I don’t generally seek out smut for my ships, for whatever reason, but I freely admit that I sought out smut for these two. And found it. Found it with quality in spades. Praise be. Is this a good spot for recs? If so:
Sleepless by pugoata
Like a Lullaby by SweetScentences
Has a picture of 4 ever been your screensaver/profile pic/tumblr?
Nope. I tend not to change my pics very much, and they tend to focus on single characters rather than ships, again for whatever reason.
If 7 were to suddenly break up today, what would your reaction be?
Yeah… Well of course they’re not together in canon. I ship supercorp foolishly, helplessly, knowing all the while that the chances of it becoming reality are vanishingly small. That said, we don’t ship purely for canon, do we? So if Kara and Lena were together and then were to break up I’d be disappointed, but I suspect they’d find their way back to each other. These two have a history of being separated, then rediscovering their love and coming back together. I give it a couple of weeks. :)
Why is 1 so important?
Man, I don’t know! It snuck up on me! I think there’s something here about firstly, the context for Lumity. Amity’s crush on Luz was just presented as normal, as something fine and good and natural, and that meant so much to me. There’s a softness here that I love so much. I also heavily empathise with Amity – the trying to live up to expectations and feeling that you have to hide yourself behind emotional walls – and the thought of her finding love with someone like Luz who is so open and emotionally giving does my heart good. I want Amity to find acceptance and openness with Luz. I want Luz to find herself seen and valued for exactly who she is by Amity. I want to see them finding strength and security in each other. I just love them, you guys.
There’s a bit in this wonderful YouTube video essay, which I recommend to the moon and back – watch it if you haven’t! (“The Owl House is Great and Here’s Why, by Film Freak”) Where the essayist concludes their section on Lumity by saying: “I don’t know if Disney will chicken out in the future with regards to Lumity or any other queer rep, but for now I’m cautiously optimistic. Maybe I just have rose-tinted goggles for how soft this ship is, but whatever, let me stan just once.”
And… yeah. That.
Which one has the strongest bond?
Wow, tough one. Probably Sabran and Ead. They’ve gone through everything together, and are prepared to wait for each other in the end. Their bond is strong enough to take that and more.
Which ship has lasted the longest?
For me or the ship itself? For me of all of these probably Korra / Asami. Shipped ‘em first time I saw LoK, and haven’t stopped.
How many times, if ever, has 6 broken up?
Have they ever gotten together? If they ever did get together they’d break up every couple of days. These two are a mess, and their relationship is a toxic trainwreck. Still ship ‘em though. Can’t help it. Sometimes ships are just fascinating. If this was real life I’d want them to not come within shouting distance of each other. In fiction I’m riveted.
If the world was suddenly thrust into a zombie apocalypse, which ship would make it out alive: 2 or 8?
Definitely Harrow and Gideon. Those two have fought through apocalyptic situations before, and my money would be on them to do it again. Plus they are the quintessential battle couple. Can you imagine Harrow’s bone magic and Gideon’s martial expertise being unleashed on zombies? Those two would save the whole damn world.
Amity and Boscha would put up a good fight, I think, but I can see them disagreeing on key decisions which might hurt their chances.
Did 7 ever have to hide their relationship for any reason?
Given that Kara is a whole secret identity, we could say they are continually hiding their relationship when Kara is out there as Supergirl? I could also see them hiding their relationship at Lena’s insistence to protect Kara from Lex before she realised Kara was actually Supergirl. She might even want to do that afterwards as well, on reflection. Lena is very protective of Kara, ironically enough. :)
Is 4 still together?
Right now? This is another non-canon ship. That said, this is one I’m genuinely hoping for a canon appearance from. Their relationship might be put under strain from the fact that they’re both mages, and mages tend to get selfish and power hungry (or at least these two claim that’s how it goes). I think they’d work through it though. These two talk big about their own selfishness a lot, and then in practice are very caring and protective of others. I can see that extending to each other. Just kiss already.
Is 10 canon?
Yup! My token het ship are still very much together, growing old and having babies.Good for them. :)
If all 10 ships were put into a couple’s Hunger Games, which couple would win?
This is an invitation to go into huge depth, but my initial feeling is that Harrow and Gideon would again have it hands down. Those two are world-endingly powerful. Although that said, Kara and Lena might give them a run for their money. Pure power ranking? Let’s see…
1.      Harrow / Gideon
2.      Kara / Lena
3.      Korra / Asami
4.      Beau / Jester
5.      Caleb / Essek
6.      Percy / Vex
7.      Harrow / Ianthe
8.      Sabran / Ead
9.      Amity / Luz (no shade, but these guys are literal children. Grown up they’d put up a better showing, I’d bet)
10.  Amity / Boscha
Has anyone ever tried to sabotage 5?
I mean… Fjord? I wonder sometimes what would have happened if Beau had genuinely put in a play for Jester, rather than stepping back to let Fjord make his move. She very obviously decided that Fjord should have a free shot, and I wonder how it would have worked if she actually decided to compete. Would Fjord have stepped back to let Beau make a try for Jester if he was aware of her feelings? I don’t know. A genuine competition would have been heartbreaking but oh so interesting to see.
Do you spend hours a day going through 3’s tumblr tag?
Not hours, but I have put some good time into finding fanart for these two. There is some good work out there!
If an evil witch descended from the sky and told you that you had to pick one of the ten ships to break up forever or else she’d break them all up, which ship would you SINK?
Amity / Boscha. Sorry you two! I wrote myself into shipping Amity and Boscha, when I fell in love with Boscha and decided she could actually be good for Amity in a snarky, take no shit kind of a way. I would still love to see more of them. (Halfway through that one-shot btw.) But if it was them or everyone else? Sorry guys. :(

Romania 1999 Pt 5 (Charlie Weasley x Female MC)
Summary: AU where MC is an American who attended the Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry instead of Hogwarts. Set eight years post graduation (1999) when she finally gets the nerve to travel abroad and follow her dream to be a Dragonologist in Romania. Check out my master list for parts 1 - 4.
Notes: I’m so sorry this took me a million years to post. Life got crazy, and proof reading this long of a fic took me years, but I hope you enjoy :) part 6 will be the last part in this series, so stay tuned!
Word Count: A lot. I’m talking ~11,500. Whoops.
(Y/N) brought her steaming mug of tea to her lips as Charlie sat down beside her on the couch. It had been a couple days since the pair returned from their time off, and the Sanctuary was busier than ever. They had to split up the past two mornings since Hank and Scott were the ones up to date on how the dragons were doing, and (Y/N) was grateful for the space. Between all the time they'd spent together and Charlie's Christmas present, she needed to distance herself from her feelings, which was a lot easier to do when the redhead wasn't around.
"Did Norberta do that?" (Y/N) asked when Charlie began applying a thin layer of burn-healing paste to his wrist.
"No, she did great. Aro on the other hand…" He flinched as the orange potion began to work its magic on the small patch of raw skin. "He wasn't as pleased to see me."
(Y/N) set her mug down on the wooden end table to her right and screwed the cap back onto the potion for him. That was the sixth burn she'd heard of in one week, and though it wasn't unheard of for the breed, it wasn't exactly normal either. "Does Hank have any idea what might be going on with him?"
"Not a clue. They did a physical evaluation yesterday and found nothing."
"Huh. Well, we can check on him again on Monday after Gertie and see if he's getting any better," (Y/N) suggested, placing the potion onto the coffee table in front of them.
Charlie smiled. "Sounds like a plan. How was Ventus?"
"He did great after about ten minutes or so. I'm pretty sure he was giving me the cold shoulder at first for being gone."
The redhead chuckled. "Guess I'm not the only one to notice when you're not around."
That caught (Y/N)'s attention. She tried to steady her heartbeat by forcing a laugh, ignoring Charlie's eyes on her. Was he saying he missed her? "I'm surprised you aren't sick of me after being stuck with me for a full week."
Charlie leaned back into the couch, propping his arm up on a pillow in his lap. "You're joking, right? That was one of the best holidays I've taken in years."
Not sure what to say, (Y/N) took a quick drink of her tea again to occupy herself, feeling her cheeks, and now her throat, burn.
"Did you mean what you said to my mum? About it being the best Christmas you've ever had?"
(Y/N) looked down at her lap, surprised Charlie remembered that. "Well yeah, but don't go getting a big head on me because that's not saying much." She bumped her shoulder against his, but Charlie frowned.
"You don't have to do that with me you know."
"Do what?"
He raised an eyebrow at her. "Use jokes to cover up your feelings."
(Y/N) swallowed, realizing it sounded like she was bitter over her family when in reality she just didn't want Charlie to know how much she enjoyed spending the past week with him and his family. "Uh, sorry. It's a bit of a habit."
"Don't get me wrong, I like how tough you are, but you can talk to me about anything."
(Y/N) stared at him, blood pounding in her ears. I like how tough you are. She tugged at her sweater sleeves awkwardly. "Okay, then I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little jealous of your incredible family."
A smile grew Charlie's face. "I don't mind sharing. In case you didn't notice, my parents are pretty accustomed to taking in strays at this point."
Every nerve ending in (Y/N)'s body sparked, making it hard to think properly. Despite the fact that Charlie was talking about his siblings' significant others, (Y/N) reminded herself that Harry and Hermione had been Ron's friends at the start. Friends. Just like she and Charlie were.
She forced another smile, praying the dragon lover couldn't see the effect his words had on her. "Thanks. I'd like that."
"The only condition," Charlie added, narrowing his eyes at her, "is that you can't repeat any of the stories you hear to Hank or Scott."
The knot in (Y/N)'s stomach released and she burst out laughing. "Aw, come on. Can't I at least tell them you used to have a hippy ponytail like Bill does now?"
Charlie groaned, shaking his head adamantly. "Absolutely not. And I'm going to tell Bill you said that."
"I don't know why you're embarrassed by it. That picture of you was adorable." She glanced up at his orangey-red hair, which was still parted to the left like it had been in his Quidditch picture at Hogwarts but was now much shorter in the back. The thick layers up top fell past his ears and always seemed to droop in front of his face in the most adorable way. "You never did tell me why you lopped it all off."
Charlie ran a hand through the spiky strands up front, pushing them back like he always did even though they rarely stayed put. "I stopped wearing the ponytail once I left Hogwarts, but it actually wasn't until Bill's wedding that my mum had a go at it. I figured she had enough going on at the time, the least I could let her do was cut my hair."
"I take it you liked it short then?"
"No, she cut it really short. I used a spell on it a few days later but compromised by not letting it reach my shoulders."
The corners of (Y/N)'s mouth twitched as she pictured his trademark red hair as long as Bill's. "Well, if you ever grow it back out, I call dibs on braiding it. I love your hair."
The look in Charlie's eyes made her heartbeat stutter.
"You do?"
"Of course I do," (Y/N) said coolly, hoping her confession wasn't too intimate or weird. "Who wouldn't? It's the most distinguishable thing about you."
His gaze dropped back down to the orange paste on his arm. "In my experience, red hair and freckles have always been considered negative traits."
"Who the hell told you that?" (Y/N) asked, the sudden protectiveness making her body tense. "If anything, those are two of the most attractive things about you."
Charlie's eyes trailed over to meet hers, and the blood drained from (Y/N)’s face when she registered what she had said. It didn't have to be embarrassing, right? It's not like she admitted she frequently thought about touching his hair and kissing every last one of those freckles.
"Oh, come on," she added to be safe, smacking his shoulder with a pillow. "You don't get to be self conscious. The most sought after woman here was interested in you for crying out loud. That's gotta be an ego boost."
Charlie sighed, giving (Y/N) a look he usually reserved for Hank. "I take it you're referring to Sydney?"
"Of course. Who else would I be referring to?" (Y/N) considered the other women in their age range at the Sanctuary. Jessica was the only other one their coworkers obsessed over, but they would never admit it. She was Dave's younger sister and common sense told everyone she was off limits.
"Now look who's selling themselves short."
(Y/N) stared wide-eyed at the redhead before barking a laugh. "You're kidding, right?" The serious look in his eyes, however, said otherwise, and her amusement faded. "I can assure you literally no one here has hit on me. Sydney probably made it abundantly clear where I stand with them."
Charlie pursed his lips together, looking as though he had something to add to the conversation.
"What?"
"I don't think it's because of Sydney," he said hesitantly.
(Y/N) stiffened. She knew the teams gossiped, she had just always hoped it wasn't about her. "What do you mean?"
"The only reason they haven't chatted you up is because…" He trailed off, looking as though he was hoping she could somehow magically connect the remaining dots.
"Because…?" (Y/N) urged. She genuinely had no clue where he was going with this.
Charlie kept his eyes on her, but (Y/N) could tell he was embarrassed. "Well, based off of comments they've made in the past, I think they're assuming there's something going on between us."
"Oh." The word came out like a high pitched croak due to (Y/N)'s sudden dry throat. While she had always worried about Hank and Scott assuming she was pining over the redhead, she hadn't given a second thought about what the other teams likely presumed about their relationship.
"I've tried to tell them otherwise," Charlie added, "but they listen just about as well as Aro does."
The expression on his face made it seem as though Charlie had been teased about their friendship at one point or another, and (Y/N) tried to ignore the nervous pitter-patter of her heart at the thought. "Shit, I'm sorry. Did you want me to talk to them? I can tell them to piss off."
Charlie smiled a little. "No, I don't care what they think, I just- I thought you should know. You know, in case you wanted any of them to ask you out."
"What? No," (Y/N) said automatically, unable to stop the distaste from showing on her face at the idea of anyone at the Sanctuary asking her out. Anyone except… She swallowed, forcing herself back to the present moment. "If anything, I should say thanks. That's spared me a lot of trouble. But… doesn't it bother you?"
Charlie's brows drew together. "Why would it? You're the most amazing woman I've ever met."
Just like that, it suddenly felt as if all the oxygen had been sucked out of the room. Did he… did he really just say that?
An indistinguishable shift in tension settled over them as they stared at one another, and (Y/N) realized how easy it would be to make a move. She could practically feel the words pleading to leave her mouth- Charlie, is there something going on between us?
But Charlie continued speaking, extinguishing the opportunity and snapping her back to reality.
"Besides, they-"
Boots clomping on (Y/N)'s front porch followed by an abrupt knock on the screen door made both Dragonologists jolt in their seats and turn around towards (Y/N)'s front door.
"Sorry to interrupt," Hank said, pushing open the squeaky screen door, "but some woman's here to see ya, (Y/N)."
(Y/N) froze, and a heavy lead weight started to creep its way up her legs, settling itself neatly inside her stomach. "Did she say her name?"
"Nah. She said it's a surprise? Adorable little thing with blonde hair. Looks to be about your age."
"Oh my God!" (Y/N) squealed, jumping to her feet. "Charlie, hold that thought- I promise I'll be right back!"
She flew past Hank, not even bothering to grab a jacket despite the chilly temperatures. Dashing down the porch steps, she yelped again when she spotted the one and only Penny Haywood near the entrance gates.
"What are you doing here?" (Y/N) cried, colliding into her friend with the best bear hug she could manage.
Penny giggled, hugging (Y/N) back just as enthusiastically and refusing to let go even for a second. "My family decided to visit relatives in Britain over Christmas break, so I thought I'd surprise you for New Year's."
(Y/N) felt a tightness creep into her throat. She couldn't believe Penny was really here, she had missed her so much. "You scared the hell out of me, you know," (Y/N) whispered into the blonde's ear.
She could hear the dorky grin in Penny's voice. "Just making sure you're staying alert. You seemed to be getting quite cozy here in your letters."
"Alright, alright," came an unexpected masculine voice behind Penny, and (Y/N)'s mouth dropped open when she glanced up. "I gave you the first two minutes like I promised, but I want my hug now."
"Barnaby!" (Y/N) gasped, her heart swelling so much she could hardly breathe.
Penny conceded and released (Y/N) from her death grip long enough for (Y/N) to lunge at the Thunderbird. The six foot tall Magizoologist lifted her off the ground with ease, spinning her around in a full circle and squeezing her as tight as he could without crushing her. "You didn't think I'd miss out on this epic trip, did you?"
(Y/N) felt her eyes burn from the elation while Barnaby set her gently back on her feet. "I've missed you guys so much. How is everyone?"
"We'll catch you up on everything," Penny promised before a mischievous glint reflected in her blue eyes. "But first, you have to tell me who's waiting on your front porch for you."
(Y/N) turned to see Charlie leaning against the porch railing. He smiled at her, which only worsened (Y/N)'s over-stimulation and brought his earlier statement rushing back into her mind. You're the most amazing woman I've ever met. Shit, what had he been about to say to her?
"Merlin's beard, is (Y/N) (L/N) blushing?" Penny gushed, playfully shoving (Y/N)'s shoulder.
Barnaby howled with laughter. "Awh, come on, don't tell me this place has made you a softie."
"Would you two shut up, we're just friends," (Y/N) hissed even though neither of them had been remotely loud enough for anyone to hear. "I'll only introduce you if you guys promise to behave."
"Fiine," Penny huffed, and Barnaby drew an "X" over his chest.
"Cross my heart."
(Y/N) bit her lip, secretly excited for Charlie to meet her friends. She hoped he liked them as much as she liked his family.
An unpleasant thought struck her, however, as she swiveled around and saw Dave and Russell gawking from the researcher's picnic table. For a ridiculous moment, (Y/N) didn't want to introduce Penny to Charlie until common sense caught up with her. In fact, as they approached the porch, (Y/N) noticed his eyes weren't even on the blonde at all, but rather on Barnaby.
"Charlie, this is Barnaby and Penny, two of my best friends from America."
"It's great to meet you," Charlie said, extending a hand to Barnaby, but (Y/N) noticed a change in his demeanor since they had been talking. Was he mad at her for running out on their conversation? She sure hoped not.
The redhead turned to do the same for Penny, but (Y/N) was mortified when the blonde flung herself forward instead, hugging Charlie without warning.
"Thank you for looking out for her," she said, unapologetically squeezing him once before releasing him. (Y/N) was going to kill her later.
Charlie chuckled, his posture rigid as usual from the unexpected physical contact. "This one hardly needs taking care of."
(Y/N) smiled at that. Charlie needed to start being more careful or her head was going to be the size of a hot air balloon by the end of the night.
"Isn't that the truth," Penny muttered, shooting (Y/N) a pointed look. "So what now? We don't want to butt in if you're busy."
(Y/N) shrugged. "No, we were just hanging out. We're always done a few hours before nightfall. What do you guys want to do?"
"Can we tour the place at all?" Barnaby asked, the childlike excitement evident in his voice.
Unsure of the rules, (Y/N) glanced to Charlie, who checked the watch on his wrist.
"As long as (Y/N)'s with you and you stay far enough away from each dragon, then sure. Just stick to the paths and be back by dusk."
Penny beamed, instantly dragging Barnaby towards the winding pathway past Charlie's house. "C'mon then, what are we waiting for?"
(Y/N) moved to follow them, but when Charlie stayed put, she turned back. "Aren't you coming?"
His eyebrows raised. "Oh no, it's cool. Go catch up with your friends."
She shot him a funny look. Did he really think she was going to ditch him because her old friends showed up? Without questioning the urge, (Y/N) grasped his hand the way Penny had Barnaby's and tugged his arm once. "Then you have to come too."
His gaze trailed down to where their hands were connected before settling back on (Y/N). Refusing to feel self conscious, she squeezed his hand and urged him forward again, earning herself another half smile as he conceded and followed her down the porch steps.
And the best part? Charlie squeezed her hand right back.
Penny and Barnaby stayed at the Sanctuary for the weekend, celebrating the new millennium with (Y/N)'s team and catching up on everything they had missed in each others' lives. (Y/N) tried her best not to babble too much about the Sanctuary but could hardly help it as story after story came rushing to her head. She got to hear all about Penny's teaching position and Barnaby's new pets back home. They told her how Rowan and Jae were doing, and at night (Y/N) was able to confide in Penny about her confusing feelings for the redhead. It was so amazing to have them there that it went by in a blur and, as (Y/N) anticipated, saying goodbye became one of the hardest tasks in the world.
But the one thing that made the inevitable easier to stomach was Charlie, who was waiting for her with two brooms in hand as soon Penny and Barnaby left on Sunday morning.
"Figured you could use a ride right now," he said, extending one of the Nimbus 2008s to her.
She beamed at him, refusing to acknowledge the lump in her throat while she mounted the broom. What would she do without him?
He lead the way to the Thestrals, surprising (Y/N) again with just how well he knew her. The comfort of the creatures combined with Charlie's company meant more to her than she could put into words.
"So how you doing?" he asked, keeping his eyes on her as they sat next to each other on a large rock near the pond. The concern in his voice brought (Y/N) back to that bench at the Burrow and Charlie admitting he was worried she'd want to go back to the States.
"I'm okay. I still have the dragons and you, don't I?" She nudged him playfully, wanting him to know she would be alright. Even in America, (Y/N) jumped around so much she became accustomed to not seeing her friends for months at a time. Her sadness from today would dissolve soon enough and the redhead was undoubtedly expediting that process.
He smiled at her, his freckled face pink in the afternoon sunlight. "Definitely."
"So my crazy friends didn't scare you away then?"
Charlie laughed, shaking his head. "No, they were cool. I'm glad I got to meet them."
"Me too. Even if they are humiliating sometimes..." She shuddered, remembering Penny revealed that (Y/N) spent most of their third year in the library reading about dragons.
"Just consider the playing field a little bit more even now," Charlie said. "More incentive for you to not tell Hank or Scott any of my stories."
"Yeah, yeah." She studied the resting Thestral in front of her and replayed the weekend events in her head a few times. "I would say it went pretty well though."
"Aside from Logan hitting on both of them. He's ridiculous."
(Y/N) laughed. The thirty year old research team member was the most flirtatious wizard she had ever met. "Oh, I considered it a win that he was the only one. Those two always get hit on, especially Penny."
Charlie didn't say anything in response, so she added, "It's okay, you know. You can admit she's hot, it's no secret."
Their gazes met and the guileless look in his eyes told (Y/N) he wasn't hiding anything. "Yeah, I mean she's pretty I guess."
(Y/N) stared at him, stupefied by his disinterest. In the fifteen years she had known the Pukwudgie, nearly everyone was a little stunned by her beauty. "Okay, was your girlfriend at Hogwarts some sort of rare godless-like creature or am I missing something?"
Charlie looked back toward the Thestral and (Y/N) had the sudden fear she made the dragon lover uncomfortable. Just as she was about to apologize and tell him to forget it, he said, "She was nice."
(Y/N) held her breath, waiting- or at least hoping- for him to continue. That couldn't have been the only quality he liked about her. Sydney may have walked a tight line on that one, but Penny and Fleur were nice too.
"And we were friends." The redhead sighed, rubbing the stubble across his jawline. "I don't expect you to understand because no one seems to, but I'm only ever attracted to someone after I know them. After we're friends."
(Y/N) prayed he couldn't hear the nervous hammering of her heart. They were friends. Did that mean that she could actually have a chance with him?
She shook her mind of the thought, scolding herself for being so selfish. Scooting closer to the dragon lover, (Y/N) allowed her shoulder to press against his as she placed a hand on his forearm. "Hey, what's wrong with that?"
He glanced down at her, his brown eyes searching hers for something. "I don't know. People have given me grief about it since I was a teenager. They just don't get it."
She frowned, not sure if she was more upset for Charlie or angry with those people. "I would've never made that comment if I'd known. I'd never make fun of or judge you for anything like that. Those people are assholes."
A grateful smile tugged at the redhead's lips. "Thanks."
Their eyes met again, and for a ridiculous, utterly delusional moment, (Y/N) thought she felt another shift in tension between them. Did he just lean in closer?
She was clearly losing her wits because Charlie merely turned to face the Thestrals again, saying, "So what about you?"
(Y/N) blinked, attempting to calm her rampant pulse. "Huh?" No wonder they called it lovesick. The way this man fried her brain cells was sickening.
"You've heard all about my lack-luster love life, and yet I've heard nothing about yours. Surely you left some bloke heartbroken back across the pond?"
Less than pleasant memories resurfaced in (Y/N)'s mind, causing an angst-riddled scoff to escape her lips. "Hardly," she muttered, the flashbacks leaving a bitter taste in her mouth.
Charlie waited patiently, clearly expecting further explanation, and (Y/N)'s gut twisted as she was forced to confront one of the many aspects about her past that she would prefer to forget.
She couldn't blame her ex's. (Y/N) had more baggage than most their age- baggage that had to be kept under wraps and constantly required her to move from place to place. But that didn't mean it didn't hurt when people you cared for called you selfish and a liar. Or when they betrayed you.
"My first relationship was great," she began, wanting him to know not all of her experiences had been shitty. "He was insanely sweet and was in the same Ilvermorny house as me, so we had a lot in common. But after my brother died, I needed space and he understood." She tried not to fidget, grateful the cool air kept her hands from sweating. "We never could rekindle what we once had, so I moved on to a new state and new career."
"And after that?" Charlie asked. He wasn't stupid. He knew she was stalling.
(Y/N) sighed, drawing her knees against her chest. "Let's just say I learned early on that it's better not to get involved with people until you're ready to settle down."
Charlie seemed to consider this. "I take it someone didn't like it when you switched jobs again?"
She shook her head. "I asked him to come with me, but he didn't want to." She shuddered, still able to feel the slap of rejection after all this time. "I'd never had someone be so angry with me before and it's not really something I ever want to experience again." (Y/N)'s head began to ache because the memories were only an earth-shattering reminder of why she and Charlie would never work. Of why she should never trust anyone but her four Ilvermorny friends with her secrets ever again.
Charlie tensed beside her, his jaw muscles flexing. "I'd ask if he hurt you, but I have no doubt the damage you've done if he tried."
A welcomed grin took over (Y/N)'s face. She and Charlie had dueled each other loads of times, most of which ended with Charlie on the ground first. "You betcha."
"Sorry for bringing it up if you didn't want to talk about it."
"No, it's okay," (Y/N) assured, feeling that it was only fair considering what he told her. "It's probably healthier to talk about it."
"Have you dated anyone since?" Charlie asked.
She shook her head. "A couple flings here and there, but he stabbed me in the back pretty good. Haven't really been able to trust anyone enough."
"No one at all?"
(Y/N) held her breath and glanced up at the redhead. Was he asking if she trusted him?
As her heart rate increased, Charlie added hesitantly, "What about Barnaby?"
A mixture of disappointment and bewilderment bubbled in (Y/N)'s stomach. "What?" Her shoulders shook with laughter, and she cringed at the mere thought. "No. Merlin no." She continued laughing until she saw unexpected tension release from Charlie's shoulders and remembered his expression when he met the Thunderbird.
Wait, was he…
"I just thought you two seemed close," he said with a shrug.
(Y/N) studied him closely. "I trust that guy with my life, but not like that. He's like my brother."
Charlie remained quiet, and a realization struck (Y/N). While she may have had several intimate bonds with a handful of friends, Charlie really only seemed to have his brother, who was now married, and her. Jealousy could exist in platonic forms, not just romantic.
"Charles Weasley," (Y/N) began, an arrogant grin spreading across her face. "Are you jealous of my friendship with Barnaby?"
Color flooded the redhead's cheeks faster than (Y/N) could say gotcha, and he jerked his head back towards the Thestrals. "What? No, of course not."
"Merlin's beard, you so are!" (Y/N) couldn't stop herself from poking his side, and he swatted her hand away.
"Sod off," he said, standing up to avoid her teasing, and she hurried after him towards their brooms.
"Oh, come on. There's no need to fight over me. I can have more than one best guy friend, you know."
Charlie turned back around unexpectedly, making (Y/N) reel back to stop herself from colliding into his chest. He stared down at her, his mesmerizing eyes piercing right through her, but a roar in the distance caught their attention before he could speak.
(Y/N)'s face lit up at the familiar sound. "Wanna go check on Aro?"
Charlie paused, the teasing seemingly forgotten as his eyebrows raised. "You want to go check on him? ...On our day off?"
"Sure, why not?" She was surprised he was even questioning her. Charlie was always down to visit the dragons.
Amusement reflected in those brown eyes and he stared at her so long, (Y/N) wanted to look away, but she didn't.
"Sure," he said finally, a grin growing on his pale face. "Race you."
-
To say Aro was more irritable than usual was an understatement. The Hungarian Horntail would barely let them stand a hundred feet away, let alone the standard fifty. The pair had to use the surrounding trees and boulders to sneak closer, keeping their motions limited and voices low.
"When exactly did he burn you?" (Y/N) asked, crouching behind a thick, leafless oak tree.
Charlie thought for a moment. "Actually, it was after I fed him, which I found odd. He's usually one of the easiest to manipulate with food, but he almost seemed worse right after he ate."
She considered this. While a physical exam wouldn't diagnose gastrointestinal issues, there was no way the food would have made it to the digestive tract that quickly. "No vomiting?"
"Nope. Felix thinks they're going to have to take a blood sample tomorrow unless they find out what's wrong."
(Y/N)'s heart sank. Withdrawing dragon's blood was no easy task. Their thick skin was hard to penetrate even with the use of magic, and it was usually a painful, traumatic experience for the creature. "No. We'll figure out what's wrong with him."
One of Charlie's heart stopping smiles made an appearance, releasing a hoard of butterflies in (Y/N)'s chest.
"What's the plan then?"
She peered around the tree, glancing at the dragon perched on the solid ground. His posture was tense and tail rigid, indicating he was either alert or in constant pain. Since there were no alarming sounds or threats nearby, (Y/N) assumed it had to be the ladder, but what could be hurting him that wouldn't show up in a physical?
"Charlie, do you think you could get him to open his mouth?" she asked suddenly.
The redhead chuckled. "I don't think that will be a problem."
She smiled apologetically. "Preferably without it being followed by fire though."
"Alright, that might be a tad bit more difficult." He reached for a Snitch-sized rock on the ground before standing and moving behind the next tree in line. "Mind telling me what we're looking for first?"
"The mouth is the only external part not checked in a physical."
Charlie quirked an eyebrow. "You think he's being this mean over a toothache?"
"He could've cut his tongue or have an infection," she whispered, hurrying past Charlie to duck behind a nearby boulder. (Y/N) was no longer thankful for the surprisingly warm January day; snow would have been a welcomed distraction for what she was about to do. "I'm gonna get as close as I can to see while you try to distract him."
Charlie nodded hesitantly. "You sure you don't want to wait until tomorrow? I'd say the probability of getting burned is pretty high."
Despite knowing the odds were likely not in her favor, they could keep looking for answers if they were wrong today. If they were wrong tomorrow, Felix would probably move forward with the blood withdrawal. "I'm willing to get a little banged up for Aro's sake."
The redhead still didn't seem as convinced. "Why don't you let me get close to him while you distract him?"
"Because you don't know what different injuries to look out for. How many dragons here have had gum infections or tongue abrasions?"
Charlie pursed his lips together. "Fair point."
She smiled at him, hating the way her heart warmed at his obvious concern. "I'll be fine as long as you promise to apply the burn-healing paste for me."
The worry instantly left Charlie's face, replaced by an amused smile. "Deal."
(Y/N) ignored the butterflies in her stomach, along with the thought that maybe the burn that was likely to follow wouldn't be so bad. "Now throw the rock while I try to get a good view of his mouth."
Charlie obliged while she army crawled forward, staying low to the ground and wiggling her body as little as possible. When the rock hit the ground, Aro's head lifted in response, body seemingly frozen as those intense eyes darted around the clearing. (Y/N) froze, hoping she was far enough to the dragon's right that he would miss her. Thankfully, Charlie sent another rock past Aro this time, causing the dragon's head to jerk in the opposite direction. He growled at the pebble, displaying the right side of his mouth to (Y/N). No black teeth, purple gums, or bleeding there.
She glanced back at Charlie, motioning for him to toss the next rock up into the air. He did one better by withdrawing his wand and using the levitation spell on the rock. Aro's head followed the rock as it climbed through the air, giving (Y/N) the perfect opportunity to center herself with the dragon. His growl was a low grumble, clearly more intrigued by the rock than threatened, but his mouth was just wide enough for her to spot the blood oozing from his top left canine. It was no wonder the team didn't notice it- most would assume the blood was from the raw meat he was being fed.
Realizing Aro was losing interest in the rock, she scrambled to her feet, retreating to the nearest tree. He howled in anger when she made a break for it, but the Hungarian Horntail surprised her. Instead of letting out an angry burst of flames like she was anticipating to dodge, Aro whipped his tail from out behind him, nailing (Y/N) right between the shoulder blades.
She stumbled forward from the blow, letting out a gasp as the spikes punctured her skin. She caught herself from face planting on the rock solid ground and instinctively tried to push herself up until agonizing pain unfurled inside her, forcing her arms to give out. She tried to crawl forward, just barely registering Charlie distracting Aro in the background. Thank God for that.
Once (Y/N) reached a large enough rock, she used her abs instead of her arms to pull herself up and leaned against the chilled stone for support as she made her way back to her feet.
"What hurts?" Charlie asked once he reached her, his voice gentle as always. He had always been the best at staying calm under pressure.
"Upper back," she gritted, digging her fingernails into the palm of her hand. She couldn't stop herself from slumping against the redhead when he wrapped an arm around her waist and pulled her away from the rock, carefully trying to avoid the injury.
"Madam Rosetta's is at least a ten minute walk from here. Can you make it?"
(Y/N) shook her head, but not for the reason Charlie was thinking of. Despite the stinging pain, she could force herself to make it just about anywhere, but thankfully she was cognizant enough to know better.
"Do you want me to carry you there?"
Burying her face into that forest green shirt he was wearing seemed like one of the most appealing options in the world, but she willed herself to shake her head again while her body and subconscious called her a traitor. "Just help me get the nearest emergency shed first."
Even though the pain was isolated to her back, each step felt worse than the last as (Y/N)'s adrenaline wore off. Once they reached one of the dozens of sheds scattered throughout the Sanctuary, (Y/N) rested a palm against the dark wood for support while Charlie held the door open for her.
Blinking through the black and white dots clouding her vision, (Y/N) eased her way into the cramped shed, stumbling toward the familiar oak table against the left wall and letting out a hiss of pain while she leaned back against it. "Son of a bitch."
As the shed door banged shut behind Charlie, she squeezed her eyes shut and eased herself up onto the wooden table, gripping the ledge on either side of her. She was probably going to bruise her palms from how tightly she was holding on, but she didn't care. She'd do anything to find relief from the searing pain emanating from the space between her shoulder blades.
Two creaks of the floorboards and a sudden nearby warmth told her her Charlie was now beside her, undoubtedly surveying the damage.
"We've got to get you to Madam Rosetta."
His voice seemed to be about the only thing that could bring (Y/N) any relief. Smooth as honey and concern for her threaded into each syllable. But there was no way she could do that. The Sanctuary had rules when it came to serious injuries. Rules that required documentation and professional review- more written proof of her being here.
(Y/N) shook her head once, releasing a slow, calming breath before she blinked her eyes open. She was wrong- her best friend’s freckled face brought her an ounce of relief too.
"I just your need help," she insisted as calmly as she could while brushing hair away from the nape of her neck. A light smear against her fingertips indicated just how deep the wound was and Charlie let out a hiss of breath.
"Bloody hell."
She attempted a pathetic smile while she wiped away the faint trace of blood smudged across her fingers with the sleeve of her sweater. "Quite a literal choice of words there, don't you think?"
Charlie didn't laugh. His intense brown eyes were laser focused on her back, and embarrassment settled over her when (Y/N) realized she needed to take her shirt off.
"What are you doing?" he asked, more alarmed than (Y/N) had ever heard him before as she fumbled behind herself to grip the back of the sweater.
With a wince and a frustrated sigh, (Y/N) lowered her hands back to her sides. "Can you help me lift the back of my shirt over my head?"
Considering this was the man who flinched at hugs and flushed at cheek kisses, (Y/N) waited for him to protest, but it never came. To her surprise, Charlie moved without being told twice, carefully sliding the hem of her gray sweater up and stretching out the collar to guide it seamlessly over her head.
(Y/N)’s shirt now rested in front of her, giving her a view of the slashed and blood soaked material. Despite how off putting the sight of her own blood was, she kept her arms in the sleeves, thankful the bunched up fabric managed to cover up most of her cleavage. Why couldn't she have worn a sports bra today?
“It’s over a centimeter deep,” Charlie said, averting his eyes from the wound. The raspy falter in his voice made (Y/N) wonder if it was the severity of the injury or the fact that she was practically shirtless that left him so unnerved. They were best friends right? This was no different than him seeing her in a bikini top.
(Y/N) slowly straightened her slumped shoulders, forcing away all visible signs of insecurity for Charlie’s sake. Anything to make him feel less uncomfortable. “Can you speak American for two seconds? My brain is a little too overwhelmed to handle the metric system right now.”
Charlie smiled for the first time since they had stepped foot inside the shed and held his thumb and index finger up to show her.
“Okay, about half an inch. Thank you.” She attempted to pull her hair free from the neckline of the sweater but stopped abruptly as the abrasion moved with her shoulder blade. She let out a second grunt of irritation and pain, hating nothing more than the temporary loss of her independence. Just as she was about to try again, her breath caught as Charlie’s fingertips brushed against her neck, freeing the trapped strands and brushing them over one shoulder.
“What do I do?” The look in his eyes was urgent, and (Y/N)’s heart squeezed in response. He didn’t ask questions. He didn’t tell her she was an idiot for not going to the nurse. He just wanted to help her.
She smiled gratefully and pointed to the top shelf on the back wall. “Grab one of the purple bottles on the right.” Staring down at her sweater, her head pounded argumentatively while she racked her brain for the blood cleaning spell. It started with a T and was right on the tip of her tongue. “Ugh.” She roughly rubbed a hand over her face, wanting the throbbing sensation in her back to stop for just one second.
“What?” Charlie asked, instantly stepping back in front of her and setting the potion bottle onto the table beside her thigh.
She turned away from him as a frustrated flush reached her cheeks. Two of the traits she prided herself most on were her intelligence and independence, both of which were failing her right now. “I can’t remember the stupid spell to clear all this blood up. I was a Healer for an entire year and I can’t remember the damn spell.”
“Hey.” Charlie’s cold fingers rested beneath (Y/N)’s chin, gently forcing her to look at him. The touch was quick, but the striking contrast to her scorched skin made (Y/N)’s head spin. “Your body is beat up enough. We don’t need you taking swings at it too, okay?”
(Y/N) nodded, still slightly dazed from the feeling of his hand against her skin. “Okay.”
Charlie grabbed a stack of towels from the shelf and set them beside the potion bottle. “This may hurt,” he warned, tugging on a fresh pair of work gloves, “but I’ll try to put as little pressure as possible.”
(Y/N) nodded, squeezing her eyes shut again as Charlie picked up one of the towels and began blotting away the excess blood from around the wound. She calmed herself by breathing in through her nose and exhaling through her mouth while counting to ten, the technique she used to encourage her former patients to use.
“What now?” Charlie asked, setting the blood stained towel off to the side.
(Y/N) twisted the cap off of the potion and poured a generous amount of the purple liquid onto a fresh towel before handing it to Charlie. Leaning forward so her back was more accessible, she said, “This will clean it and prevent infection. Just dab it until it starts to smoke.”
“I’m sorry,” Charlie muttered when she sucked in a sharp breath as the wet towel touched her skin.
She knew the potion stung and had anticipated the pain, but it was even worse than the burn-healing paste. She bit her lip hard and was relieved when the antiseptic started to settle into the wound, alleviating some of the discomfort.
Charlie’s forehead creased with concern after he set aside second towel and gloves. “It’s smoking, but it’s still bleeding a little.”
“It’s okay. Do you remember the third healing spell I taught you?"
Nodding, Charlie withdrew his wand but hesitated. “Are you sure you wouldn’t rather Madam Rosetta do it? We've only practiced that one a handful of times.”
“Now who’s beating themselves up? You also mended Gertie’s broken claw last month on your first try and bandaged Scott’s leg two weeks ago like a pro.”
“But none of those were this severe.” He glanced down at the infliction for a minute before their eyes met again, and his voice was barely audible when he spoke. “I don’t want to hurt you.”
(Y/N) couldn’t help but smile at him. “You won’t, you’ll help me. We’re best friends, right? I trust you.”
Something sparked in Charlie’s eyes at those words, and after a minute, he nodded. “Vulnera Sanentur, right?” The melodic phrase fell from his lips with the perfect inflection on each syllable.
She grinned and leaned forward again. “Just like that, three times.”
He did exactly as he was taught, tracing his wand back and forth and performing the spell with so much elegance, (Y/N) was too distracted to notice the poking of his wand or the feeling of her broken skin knitting back together. When the words stopped, it felt as though someone had used a Time Turner, reverting back before Aro had ever scratched her.
“Merlin’s beard,” Charlie breathed, his voice full of wonder and pride while (Y/N) exhaled in relief. She knew what he was feeling- Vulnera Sanentur was one of those spells that had the ability to take your breath away when you saw it work. Without warning, he set his wand down and traced his fingers across her upper back, making (Y/N)'s head and heart go haywire. She sucked in a shaky breath and Charlie paused, looking alarmed. “Does it still hurt?”
Mortified, (Y/N) shook her head and hopped off the table. “Are you kidding? You did it perfectly!” She wanted to hug him but stopped herself once she registered her current sweater situation, which only led to a second wave of embarrassment. He probably wouldn’t appreciate (Y/N) pressing her blood covered shirt or her bra-clad chest against him. Studying the material, she realized she still couldn’t recall the blood cleaning charm and wondered what the hell was wrong with her.
Her attention returned to the redhead when she heard rustling, only to find Charlie now in a white undershirt, extending his long sleeve shirt toward her. For a moment, (Y/N) just stared at the green fabric in his hand while her heart continued to have a mind of its own. He was offering her his shirt. It took a moment for that realization to sink in, and (Y/N) wasn't sure which outcome was worse- having to put her mangled, bloody sweater back on or Charlie continuing to stand there in his nearly see-thru t-shirt that clung to his body like static. Neither were great options.
“You don’t have to,” she began, but he pushed the cotton material into her hand.
“Take it. I don’t want you to start freaking out about that spell again.”
(Y/N) smiled softly, deciding she was hardly about to put up a fight after what he had just done for her. As soon as she began to slip her arms free from her sweater, Charlie rotated around towards the table, turning (Y/N)'s insides to mush. He was so sweet she couldn't take it.
All the nerves in (Y/N)’s body jolted to attention when she pulled the fresh material over her head and a wave of Charlie's scent hit her. It took all of her self control to not bunch the material up against her nose and breath in that overwhelmingly pleasant honeysuckle and grass smell. "Thanks," she muttered, letting him know it was safe to look once the hem of the shirt fell past her hips. Charlie was only four or five inches taller than (Y/N), but the shirt was easily two sizes too big because of his broad chest and defined arms.
She tossed her sweater onto the table and was surprised to find Charlie staring at her. His eyes held an intensity (Y/N) had never seen before and she started to feel claustrophobic in the tiny shed. Why was he looking at her like that? She attempted to take a step back, but the heel of her boot clacked against the wood panel wall behind her. His gaze somehow managed to feel more invasive now than when she was standing beside him in her bra just moments ago.
(Y/N) was about to ask what he was staring at, but she didn't have a chance to speak. Without warning, Charlie closed the distance between them, his hand suddenly cupping her cheek, his body pushing her back against the wall, and before she knew what was happening, he was kissing her.
Butterflies erupted in (Y/N)'s stomach and her brain short circuited as Charlie's mouth met hers. Her palms landed on his chest while Charlie's free hand gripped her waist, and she was frozen in place. The only move her instincts allowed her to make was to close her eyes and kiss him back.
She may have imagined kissing the redhead more times than she'd ever admit, but this was nothing like those fantasies. She had always assumed he would be sweet and gentle, maybe even shy. Boy was she wrong.
(Y/N)'s heartbeat pounded like a Bludger trapped inside her chest as Charlie's body pressed against her own. His calloused fingers dug into her hip, keeping her firmly in place, and (Y/N) sucked in a breath as their tongues swirled against one another, sending a wave of pleasure over her. She involuntarily curled her fingers into his shirt to tug him closer, unable to believe how good this man's mouth felt on hers. Every inch of her body felt like it was on fire. She never wanted him to stop. She wanted to do this all the time.
But unfortunately, all good things had to come to an end. (Y/N) wasn't sure if it had been a few seconds, minutes or hours when Charlie finally jerked back. Both of them just stared at one another for a minute, wide eyed and breathless. Charlie's heavily freckled cheeks burned a shade of red (Y/N) had never seen on him before.
"Bloody hell," he whispered, and (Y/N) could tell by the panicked look growing in his brown eyes that he was about to freak out. He took a step back and closed his eyes, roughly rubbing one of his palms over his forehead.
(Y/N) just blinked at him, her chest still heaving up and down as she tried to circulate more oxygen to her brain. Anything to help the gears in her head start moving again. In that moment, she wanted to be bold. (Y/N) wanted to pull Charlie back against her and tell him to do it again. She wished more than ever that she hadn't accepted his shirt so there would have been something more substantial to clutch onto, forcing him to stay close for as long as she wanted. But instead, there she stood, dumbfounded, confused and unable to form a single damn sentence. Her chin still tingled where his stubble had scratched her, which somehow managed to be both the best and worst feeling all at the same time.
"Chaarlie," a muffled voice called from outside, breaking their staring contest.
Hank. Of bloody course.
The redhead looked tormented as his gaze alternated between (Y/N) and the shed door. His brain seemed to be just as rattled as her own.
"Go see what he wants," (Y/N) encouraged with a weak smile, reaching for her sweater on the table. "I'm good." She was referring to her back but hoped it passed for both the injury and the... the word kiss lit up in neon inside (Y/N)'s head. Holy shit. Charlie Weasley had seriously just kissed her.
He hesitated, frowning slightly. "You sure?"
(Y/N) wasn't sure what to make of his expression and still couldn't think properly, so she nodded. The last thing she needed was to have a mental breakdown in front of him while overthinking what the hell just happened. "Yeah, of course. Let's go see what he wants."
-
"There you are," Hank said, jogging down the path as soon as Charlie emerged from the shack. "Everything okay?" His greying eyebrows ratcheted up as (Y/N) leaned against the door frame, and her face flamed once she realized all the scenarios undoubtedly running through the forty-three year old's mind. She was wearing Charlie's shirt for heaven's sake.
"All good," she said, quickly folding her sweater over her arm so the deep red patch faced Hank.
His cocky smile vanished immediately. "Merlin's beard, you sure? What the hell happened?"
Charlie and (Y/N)'s gaze met briefly before they both looked away.
"We found out what's wrong with Aro," (Y/N) answered, hoping to lead the conversation to the safest territory she knew- dragons.
Hank sighed, shaking his head. "Seriously? You guys can't even take the weekend off?" When neither Charlie nor (Y/N) responded, Hank's forehead creased. "Is that all? You two look like you've seen a dementor."
The anxious look in Charlie's eyes made (Y/N)'s chest ache. Did he really think she was going to tell Hank right then and there that he had kissed her?
"Just shaken up," (Y/N) explained, feeling a lump bob in her throat. "I was expecting fire, not his tail. Charlie was great though and healed it for me. It hurt too much for me to make it down to Madam Rosetta." Her stomach twisted at the lie. Why did her life have to be this way?
Hank nudged Charlie in the shoulder with his knuckles as the trio turned back toward the village. "Good on ya, Weasley. Why don't we go grab a Butterbeer? To two look like you could use a good drink right about now while ya tell me about Aro. I'm sure Felix will be thrilled."
Food and drinks were the last thing on (Y/N)'s mind, but she went along with it. They told Hank about the Horntail's infected tooth, and (Y/N) managed to stomach half of a Butterbeer before the tension in the room was too much for her to handle.
"Where ya goin'?" Hank asked when she stood up from their picnic table.
"I'm gonna go get cleaned up and fix my sweater," she said, taking a step back and jabbing her thumb towards her place. To (Y/N)'s surprise, Charlie looked more startled than relieved.
"Do you want any help?"
(Y/N)'s head started spinning again as she tried to decipher what that meant. Was that code for let's sneak off and kiss again? Or for wanting to tell her to never mention what happened ever again?
"Nope, I've got it," she reassured a bit too forcefully.
The concern in his eyes made it seem like that wasn't the answer he was hoping for, and that just made everything that much more confusing. She needed a moment alone to think. Her brain was about ready to explode.
"Just let us know if you need anything," Hank said, raising his glass to her.
Backing up towards her front porch, she forced one last smile and waved. "Yep. I'll catch up with you guys later."
She felt Charlie's eyes on her until the door closed behind her. Letting her back rest against the wood, she slid down to the floor and began racking her brain, finally letting panic sink in.
Why had he kissed her? Was it some sort of response to her being hurt? Was it something she had said? Most importantly, why did he look so regretful after he had done it?
Maybe he hadn't enjoyed it. Maybe he thought he might feel something and didn't, and now he didn't know what to say.
The kick to her gut was quickly remedied by the inappropriate reminder that at least one part of him had enjoyed the kiss. Goosebumps broke out across (Y/N)'s skin, and while she forced away thoughts of Charlie's body against hers, a lightbulb flicked on inside her head. The look in his eyes and the unanticipated hunger behind the kiss. He was only ever attracted to someone after they were friends, and she had been practically shirtless while they were crammed in a small space together. How could she be so oblivious? It was probably a purely hormonal response and now he was mortified. But (Y/N) couldn't blame him… eight years was a long time. She just wished that realization didn't make her heart feel so heavy.
Forcing herself to breathe, (Y/N) told herself she was being ridiculous. Whatever the reason, it wasn't a big deal. It was just a kiss. Sure, it may have been a mind-numbing explosion of one for her, but she could put it behind her. A relationship was the last thing she needed to worry about anyway. It was too dangerous. (Y/N) barely could afford to make friends, let alone date someone. She didn't want anyone to get hurt or into trouble because of her.
-
Charlie continued sitting across from Hank, barely able to take his eyes off (Y/N)'s door as the minutes ticked past. He was completely conflicted between staying glued to the picnic table all night and pounding on her door until she opened it.
"You two have been acting weird ever since you got back," Hank said, setting his Butterbeer down onto the table. "Everything okay?"
Charlie shook his head, drumming his fingers nervously on the table. "No, I'm an idiot."
"Oh, Lord. What'd ya do now?"
"I kissed her."
Hank straightened so abruptly he knocked his Butterbeer over, but the man hardly seemed to care. "You what?"
The redhead dropped his head into his hand, rubbing his temples and sighing. "I bloody kissed her."
"What the hell are you groaning about?" Hank boomed, slapping a hand against the table. "This is the best news I've heard all month!"
"No it's not. The walk back here was awkward as hell because we were interrupted before we had the chance to talk." Charlie shot his buddy a look, but Hank hardly looked apologetic.
"You could have told me to piss off."
"And say what? We're busy in here, come back later? I'm sure your reaction to that would have been real appropriate."
Hank rubbed his stubble to hide is grin, not even attempting to correct the redhead. "Well, did she kiss you back?"
Charlie averted his eyes, hating how easy it was to recall (Y/N)'s mouth on his- the way her hands gripped his t-shirt, the muffled gasp she had made into his mouth. He had never been kissed like that before, and he wanted to do it over and over again. He blew out a breath, wondering what the hell was wrong with him. He had more self control as a bloody teenager. "That's not the point."
Hank grinned the biggest toothy smile that Charlie had ever seen from him. "That's one hundred and ten percent the point. I know she's into you- even if you are a total wanker."
"She didn't say anything after." Or try to do it again, his subconscious added unhelpfully. "For all I know, she could've felt cornered."
Hank barked a laugh. "You're kidding, right? That wild thing could'a kicked your ass if she wanted to."
Deep down Charlie knew that was true, but he also knew that (Y/N) had a soft spot and just might not have wanted to hurt his feelings. Her quick dismissal of him offering to help reverberated in his head. "What if I've screwed everything up?"
"Here's a crazy idea- if you're so damn worried about it, why don't you try talking to her instead of me?"
Charlie narrowed his eyes at Hank despite knowing the forty-three year old was right. With a sigh, Charlie forced himself off the bench, slowly making his way to (Y/N)'s porch and praying he didn't mess up their friendship.
-
A knock on (Y/N)'s door made her freeze at the kitchen sink. After scouring through her books for that stupid spell, she managed to fix her sweater and was now rinsing out her tea mug. Her heart thumped nervously and she cleared her throat. "Come in."
She fumbled with the mug as the door creaked open behind her and wondered what the odds of it being Hank or Scott were. Or Felix or Dave. Hell, she'd probably even take Sydney right now. Setting the cup in the sink, she turned around and her stomach plummeted. They apparently weren't good enough.
"Hey," Charlie said, shutting the door quietly. He could hardly look at her. His eyes flicked around the room, just barely jumping up to meet hers, and he hadn't moved past the first chair at the dining room table. He looked more uncomfortable than (Y/N) had ever seen and her heart cracked open in response. She didn't want him to feel that way.
"Hey, what's up?" she asked with a smile, picking up a dish towel to dry off her hands. She could ignore the elephant in the room.
Charlie hesitated for a moment, but her tone must have resonated with him on some level because his stiff posture eased and he stepped a fraction closer. "Uh, are we- I mean are you… okay?"
She could see the concern in his eyes, and her heart skipped a beat in response. Even though he was clearly uncomfortable and embarrassed, he was asking if she was okay. How could she not be head over heels for him?
"Yeah, of course," she answered, taking the time to fold the towel and set it neatly on the counter before turning back to face him. She hoped her casual tone said, Why wouldn't I be?
He ran a hand through his hair, pushing the soft red strands away from his face, and a horrible thought entered (Y/N)'s brain before she could stop it: Why hadn't she done that?
The thought of touching Charlie's hair as they kissed left (Y/N)'s face flaming with embarrassment. Averting her eyes only made the situation worse, however, because she realized she was still wearing his shirt. She had changed into leggings in place of her jeans but didn't take off his damn shirt. He was going to think she was mental.
Charlie took another step forward, now leaving only two dining chairs left between them. "Look, about earlier…"
"You don't have to do this," she interrupted, glancing at him again. "It really isn't a big deal. We can pretend it never happened if that's what you want."
Charlie stared at her for a long moment, and (Y/N) watched his Adam's apple bob as he swallowed. "What if I don't want that?"
Chills scattered down (Y/N)'s entire body and she gripped the chair in front of her for support. She couldn't have heard him right. This was the off-limits dragon lover that had been single for years. She must've misheard him. "What?" Her voice was as unstable as her legs were.
"Look, I know I'm not good at this," he began, rubbing the back of his neck. "In fact, I'm probably just about as rubbish as you can get. But I fancy you, (Y/N). A lot."
(Y/N)'s lips parted and the wild pulse in her throat was nearly all she could concentrate on. She tried to speak, but his words made her head dizzy and mouth dry. Ginny was right? He… he liked her too?
Charlie's face was beat red now as he took one final step forward. "And I was wondering if… if we could be more than just friends."
(Y/N) tried to calm her rampant heartbeat, and it wasn't until Charlie cleared his throat that she realized how long she had merely been staring at him, jaw dropped and eyes wide.
Charlie looked down at the floorboards beneath his feet, his expression turning stony. "But I completely understand if you don't think of me in that way. Or if my… lack of dating experience is-"
(Y/N) surged forward before he had a chance to finish that ridiculous sentence, wrapping her hands behind his neck and crashing her mouth against his. Charlie stumbled a little to catch his balance, letting out a raspy breath before his arm slid around her waist and he kissed her back, sending (Y/N)'s heart into overdrive. He pulled her closer and she tangled her fingers into his hair like she wanted to earlier, feeling like her whole world was complete.
Their fevered kisses faded down to delicate and when they slowly pulled back for air, (Y/N) could feel Charlie's warm, ragged breath on her lips. "Is that a yes?"
Reality struck (Y/N) like an earthquake as her promise to Ginny echoed inside her head. Easing down from her tiptoes, she rubbed her face, feeling the overwhelming bliss diminishing inside her. "Shit. I- I don't know."
"What's wrong?" Charlie asked, his brown eyes searching hers. "Is it the team? I'll make sure Hank keeps his comments to himself if that's what you're worried about."
(Y/N) shook her head. "It's not that. I just- I don't think it would be fair to you." The words cut her to the core. Life had never been this cruel to her.
Charlie didn't look angry or annoyed- he looked concerned. "Why not?"
She turned away from his gorgeous face, ashamed, heartbroken, and angry. "Charlie… There are things you don't know about me. Things you can't know."
He seemed to consider this. "Does this have to do with why you've moved around so much?"
She nodded, biting down on her lower lip.
"Why can't you tell me?"
Despite her trust issues, a part of her knew that wasn't it. As much as (Y/N) tried to fight it, as much as her past experiences told her not to, she really did trust the redhead every bit as much as Penny, Barnaby, Rowan and Jae. "It's too dangerous."
The corner of his mouth twitched the slightest bit. "More dangerous than being a Dragonologist?"
She nodded, trying to convince herself more so than the redhead. She knew him too well to think danger would scare him away.
He was now in front of her, the tips of their boots nearly touching. "What if I care about you more than my safety?"
Her nerve endings crackled like static, and it took every ounce of her self control not to touch him. "I- I refuse to put you or your family at risk. I just can't." Her lip trembled at the mere thought. She couldn't handle being responsible for anyone getting in trouble because of her. Charlie's dad worked for the Ministry for Merlin's sake. He could lose his job.
"Did you do something bad?" Charlie asked.
(Y/N)'s heart weighed down with heaviness as she considered how to answer. "People think I did," she finally whispered.
"But did you?"
She shook her head, blinking away the tears gathering in her eyes. She hoped to Merlin that he believed her. She didn't know what she would do if he didn't.
“Ah." He nodded slowly. "I think I’m starting to piece together the whole Sirius Black obsession.”
That made (Y/N) laugh- a pathetic, hollow laugh that caught in the back of her throat. “Pretty stupid, right? It’s not like that story has even a remotely happy ending.” She closed her eyes for a moment, trying to suppress all the conflicting emotions she felt. “Don’t you get it? There’s no happy ending for me. There’s no case for my innocence, I’m just a fugitive to catch. They may come after me again, and if you know what happened, they’ll say you were involved in it. I can’t have that on my conscious.”
"There’s one thing you’re not accounting for," he said, leaning his face closer to hers.
(Y/N) glanced up at him, but her voice was still overruled by defeat. “Oh yeah, and what’s that?”
Charlie smiled, clearly accepting the challenge. “You probably picked the only career where we could care less what the Ministry thinks.”
“They’re our government, Charlie. You really expect me to believe wizards here don’t care about the Ministry of Magic?”
He looked genuinely surprised by her response, as if he expected her to know better. “Do you know why reserves like this even exist?”
She waited for him to answer, sensing the question was rhetorical, and the frown forming on Charlie’s face told (Y/N) the subject made him upset.
“It’s because wizards like Newt Scamander stuck up for the safety and preservation of all creatures, even the XXXXX category. In the Ministry’s eyes, dragon’s are probably the largest nuisance in the wizarding world. They’re massive, loud, and lethal. Bloody terrible to conceal from muggles and untamable. If they had it their way, most of these creatures would likely be killed and sold for parts.”
An unpleasant knot yanked on (Y/N)’s heartstrings at the thought of losing any of these dragons. “No… they wouldn’t do that. I mean sure, maybe decades ago when we didn’t know as much, but they have to feel differently now, right?”
“Some of them do, sure,” Charlie conceded. “But we still get hassled about our work when they visit. Some badger us about our numbers, demanding if we really need this many. Some suggest expediting mother nature when one falls ill or grows old. Like I said- to them, dragons are a headache. They make up a large portion of what makes their lives miserable when an accident happens and they have to repair the damage.” He leaned his forehead against hers and brought a hand up to stroke her cheek. "So would you stop worrying about protecting me? Because I don't really give a damn what the Ministry thinks and I'd really like to kiss you again."
And just like that, (Y/N)'s entire resolve crumpled, and she kissed Charlie Weasley like her life depended on it.

Like, I love Miles Edgeworth, but he's overshadowing literally everyone else. Like he's not overrated since he actual holds up to his love, but damn, there are so many fics on him and his story from the og trilogy only. Miles has grown up beyond it and I love him for it since it makes him three dimensional.
Ok, you wanna know what greatly amuses me about you mentioning how people only pay attention to him and his story from the og trilogy only?
Edgeworth plays an important role in 4 of the 5 cases in the original game (3 of 4 if you really hate RFTA and want to exclude it from your mind. Feel free to do so but you’ll be hella frustrated when you play AJ. Unless you liked Ema.)
He only appears in 1 of the four cases in JFA and is mentioned in 2 and cameos in 1. If you don’t count the cameo, which I do, that only adds up to 1 case. Comparatively a small role, but he has a big impact on Franziska’s motivations and is the reason she wants to crush Phoenix so badly. Points to Takumi for not doing a generic “avenge my father” plot. Respect him (and Franziska) for that. He does play an extremely important role in the one case he appears in, so don’t think I’m trying to downplay him or anything.
Edgeworth is majorly absent in the third game. He prosecutes in only one case and that’s his annoying 20 year old self. He comes back in the fifth case to fill in for the defense and does play a hand in Iris and Dahlia switching places. Had it not been for that earthquake, he wouldn’t have freaked out and lost sight of Iris in the first place. He doesn’t do a whole lot else after that though.
I say this because if you think about it, Edgeworth is only in 7 of the original 14 cases if you count physical appearances only (6 out of 13 in the OG trilogy). While I won’t argue that Edgeworth isn’t important in the cases he’s in because he is totally, I will argue that it does feel odd how the focus is on him so much of the time.
And the thing is, I can see how people would argue how Edgeworth is the central character in the first game. Edgeworth is the character we see grow throughout the course of the game. We learn the most about him than any other character and the events of the game revolve around him (Turnabout Goodbyes, the DL-6 incident, etc) more than other characters besides Maya who shares a connection with him as they both lost parents to the DL-6 incident (how have those two not had more interactions, honestly?) and loses her sister in the second case.
I would argue however, that Edgeworth isn’t the character at the center of the second game although we do see him mentioned in conversations by Franziska and Phoenix. I don’t know why people will acknowledge his “Miles Edgeworth chooses death” note but absolutely refuse to acknowledge how awful of a move that was. The reason being is that it was cryptically worded and anybody reading it would think he killed himself which Franziska and Phoenix did, while Gumshoe was the only one who knew what really happened. I know what the note actually meant (i.e. the death of the prosecutor Edgeworth once was) but still, it was poorly worded.
In actuality, Phoenix is the protagonist and central character of the second game. He’s the one who goes through the most growth as we see him face a huge moral dilemma in the fourth case where he has to choose between saving his friend or sending a truly guilty man to prison. It’s absolutely interesting to see him in conflict with the character he was up to that point (someone who believed his client was genuinely innocent) and it’s something I think needs to happen more often. By that I mean, defending truly guilty defendants. While I don’t think they should be like Matt Engarde necessarily, it would be interesting to see more truly guilty defendants. (I know there’s one in DGS but not everyone has played that one so I won’t spoil.)
As for the third game, it’s pretty obvious who the main protagonist in that game is. It’s the Fey Clan obviously. Specifically, we learn more about Mia Fey, Phoenix’s mentor, through getting to play as her during the tutorial case and the other tutorial case both of which are short but help us get to know Phoenix’s wise and calm mentor. We see her during her first two cases and even get to witness her taking down Dahlia Hawthorne in an amazingly cool manner (by asking her to prove her innocence by taking Phoenix’s cold medicine which she poisoned). We also see her during her first case which was mentioned in Turnabout Memories and was said to traumatize her so badly that she felt like she was never going to step into court again. Since her opponent, Bratworth, had never lost a case before Turnabout Sisters, we know that the case won’t end well. But even so, it’s what actually happens that makes the case so gutwrenching. Seeing Terry Fawles kill himself on the stand to protect his former girlfriend who was the true killer makes for a saddening end. Regardless of what you think of him as a character, seeing Mia so distraught over not being able to prevent Fawles’ death tugs at your heartstrings.
What’s even worse is that six months later, she loses her boyfriend when he gets poisoned by Dahlia. Which does raise an interesting question: did she see the case against Wright and take it because she saw Dahlia mentioned in the case files and thought she might be connected to it? It’s likely, seeing as she brought the article talking about Diego’s poisoning with her but who knows? Either way, seeing her so determined to take Dahlia down that she’s willing to have her badge revoked is sincerely cool to watch.
And even in the present day case that Dahlia appears in, Bridge to the Turnabout, Mia doesn’t stop being rivals with Dahlia. When Maya channels Mia to ask her what she should do after Dahlia attacks her, Mia advises her to lock herself up in the Sacred Cavern in the Inner Temple and channel Dahlia in order to protect herself. It’s an extremely risky move on Mia’s part and had Dahlia not been so stubborn in seeing Maya’s corpse for herself without considering that she might be channeling her, Maya could have died of hypothermia in there (which isn’t something I had considered until the last year or so). Still, it works out in the end and Iris and Dahlia-in-Maya’s-body switch places during the second investigation period. Mia then proceeds to exorcise Dahlia out of Maya’s body with Phoenix’s help:
Dahlia: …Grr…Mmm…Nnnn… Grrr… Ahh! M… M… Mia F… F… Fey Mia Fey! Mia Fey! MIA FEEEEY! You… You… spinster!! I was supposed to kill Maya Fey like I swore I would! And if only you had gotten this spiky-haired jerk the guilty verdict… …I wouldn’t have been hanged to death!
Mia: …… True.
Dahlia: …!
Mia: But I think you finally understand, Dahlia Hawthorne. …You will never defeat me.
Dahlia: Wh-What…!? What did you say!?
Mia: Whether you’re alive, dead, or somewhere in between, you will never defeat me. As long as I’m around, you’re destined to lose for all of eternity!
Dahlia: Grrr… Grrrr… Grrrrr…
Phoenix: …I remember what you said earlier in the trial. You said there was no way we could punish you… …because you were already dead.
Dahlia: What about it!?
Phoenix: Then you said… “Even when the body dies, the spirit, the ego, it lives on… forever.”
Mia: …That’s very true, Dahlia. And that’s exactly the punishment you’ll never be able to escape from.
Dahlia: …!
Mia: For all of eternity, you’ll have to remain as Dahlia Hawthorne. A miserable, pathetic, weak creature who can never win at anything… And for you, there is no escape from that. No hope of freedom. Since the day you were executed… …the narrow bridge that once stretched out in front of you has burnt to a crisp!
This causes Dahlia to freak out and pop out of Maya’s body with a extremely loud scream. It’s extremely chilling and awesome at the same time.
One thing that stands out though, is that defeating Dahlia never stops being Mia’s personal victory as Godot mentions later on.
Godot: The woman who had spiked my scalding hot coffee… Dahlia Hawthorne! Ha…! Good ol’ Mia. She didn’t let me down. She got her revenge before she checked out. In the end… There wasn’t anyone waiting for me when I woke up.
In a way, the way that Mia Fey and Diego Armando go about taking revenge against Dahlia serves an interesting contrast to each other. Mia, although angry at Dahlia for sure, never let her anger consume her when trying to take her revenge on Dahlia. The only thing that Mia sought out to do was to make sure that she received justice for her crimes and upon finally getting Dahlia convicted of murder, moved on with her life. Mia even took Phoenix under her wing, despite his past connection to Dahlia. Even though he really had nothing to do with her crimes and even was supposed to be one of her victims, you can’t help but admire her for that.
On the other hand, Diego Armando never let his hatred of Dahlia Hawthorne go. Even after waking up from his coma and realizing that Mia had gotten revenge for him and got her sentenced to death. He was so blinded by hatred that upon encountering her at the Inner Temple Garden, he stabbed her with the cane sword, killing Misty Fey in the process. And unlike Mia, Diego hated Phoenix and even blamed him for Mia’s death. There’s also a line that suggests that he knew that Phoenix was the one that inadvertently helped Dahlia hide the bottle necklace containing the poison:
Godot: …… I never liked you. Six years ago… …you helped the woman who put me to sleep by hiding her bottle of poison.
It’s an interesting line, indeed, and implies that Diego’s hatred of Phoenix went beyond Mia’s murder. Because Phoenix “hid” the bottle of poison, Dahlia was never able to be caught for Diego’s poisoning and thus escaped justice. In summary, Mia was able to move on with her life after Dahlia got caught while Diego wasn’t which ended up being his downfall.
I can also see how some people might make a case for Maya going through development of her own throughout Trials and Tribulations. During the second and third case, we see her express doubts about her own abilities as a spirit medium and it’s implied that she’s still shaken up by the murder in Kurain Village to the point that she hasn’t even returned to the village in a while:
Maya: Well, I’m kind of taking a break… I’m having a bit of trouble right now, you know?
Phoenix: (Last year’s incident must still be on her mind… I haven’t seen Maya train at all since then. I think Mia said it’s because Maya’s “at a loss these days”…)
It’s an interesting line, and is definitely one that people seem to overlook while playing through the game. Despite her lack of training however, Maya is still able to channel Mia during the last portion of the Stolen Turnabout. The conversation the two of them have reveals that Maya is going through a dilemma currently.
Mia: I’m just joking, Phoenix. Don’t take everything so seriously. But on the other hand, Maya… She seems kind of lost these days.
Phoenix: You mean about becoming the Master of the Kurain Channeling School?
Mia: Becoming the Master… means saying goodbye to our mother.
Phoenix: You mean Misty Fey…?
Mia: …Watch over her, will you Phoenix?
One thing I find interesting though, is that Maya’s dilemma about becoming the Master isn’t overly prevalent in dialogue. Sure it’s a part of what she goes through over the course of the game but it doesn’t take a huge focus. It’s certainly unique. Here’s one such example in Recipe for Turnabout
Armstrong: You ‘ave la perfect face for a waitress, you know.
Maya: Um, thanks. I guess if things don’t work out someday, then maybe I’ll be back.
Phoenix: (What things? Is she talking about her being a spirit medium…?)
I honestly appreciate it for it’s subtlety; little character moments like this one, is what adds to the replay value of the games. True, you can just breeze through them, but taking the time to present random things to people can also reveal tons of interesting dialogue that can reveal more about the characters than if you were to do a regular playthrough and do what you need to do to progress further through the case.
All of this culminates in the last case when Maya goes to Hazakura Temple with Pearl and Phoenix to do some training which as mentioned before, she hasn’t really done much of since the Kurain Channeling incident. And unfortunately for her, it ends in disaster with her nearly being murdered by the ghost of her cousin, Dahlia and also witnessing Godot stab the spirit to death which kills her mother in the process.
When we first see Maya in the last trial portion of Bridge to the Turnabout, she’s more traumatized than we’ve ever seen her. And through this line, we get to see how she feels about the Kurain Channeling Technique in her current situation:
Maya: … I… I’m frightened. The Fey clan… I don’t want any more to do with it.
Now, let’s think about what this line means. Maya has dealt with a horrible amount of tragedy in her young life due to her heritage. She lost her mother, her sister left the village partly because she didn’t want to feud with Maya over the title of Master; her aunt plotted to have her convicted for murder and later tried to murder her through her beloved cousin, Pearl; and the one time that she decides to start training again, another tragedy occurs. Her mother was killed right in front of her by a man who was blinded by hatred towards the spirit possessing her body. It’s hard not to see why Maya would not want anything to do with her heritage after all the grief it caused her, so then, why does Maya decide to inherit the title of Master anyway?
Well, here’s the deal: The Fey Clan is extremely screwed up and has caused many of its members grief over the past two years. It’s no secret that the branch family has plotted against the main family before and has done so throughout its history:
Bikini: There is only one heir to the title of “Master” at any time, and it’s usually the eldest. That child becomes the new Master of Kurain, and her daughters, the main family. All other mediums become branch family members, with no hope of controlling the clan. That’s why nothing has changed throughout the history of the clan… Branch families always have and always will plot to erase those of the main family line.
However, Pearl doesn’t hold any sort of resentment towards Maya despite her being the heir to the title of Master. In fact, Pearl adores Maya and vice versa. The only reason she ever went with Morgan’s plan was because she thought by “It’s for the good of the Fey Clan” that her mother meant that her plan would benefit Maya and Pearl both. Maya similarly doesn’t hold any resentment towards Pearl  when she tries to blame herself for the death of Maya’s mother.
If you think about it, the fact that Maya stays and decides to become Master could also considered to be not only a result of her strength but a result of her deciding to fix the screwed up legacy of the Fey clan. As two of the people hurt most by the rivalry between the main family and the branch family, Maya and Pearl could work together to fix their family’s screwed up background and restore the Fey clan to its former glory. That’s the way I see it anyway.
Sorry for my long rant there, the Fey clan is very interesting to me. Honestly though, I’d argue that Edgeworth is more like a tritagonist. He’s extremely important at first but he becomes relatively less important over the course of the trilogy to the point that he’s only ever in one case in his present day form in the last part.
Maya is more or less the deutragonist of the games. She’s in 10 of the 14 cases in the trilogy and 6 of those cases (1-2, 1-4, 2-2, 2-4, 3-2, and 3-5) have her involved majorly in the plot whether it be her being accused of murder, dealing with her and her family history, or kidnapped (in which we get to control her too!). While she isn’t involved in the plots of 1-3 or 2-3 directly, she is the person who convinces Phoenix to take both cases and she even helps Phoenix out in the latter by raising the question of where Max’s bust is located which helps him catch Acro as the true murderer.
However, despite Maya’s overall importance to the trilogy, what stops her from being the main protagonist like Phoenix is that we don’t get to go into her head very often. We see Phoenix react to the situations around him, we get to see his thoughts while dealing with crazy witnesses and when he’s having a difficult time trying to prove something in court. Through this, we get to know Phoenix and in a sense, feel like we can connect with him. Even Edgeworth gets to be played during the first investigation and trial day of Bridge to the Turnabout where like Phoenix, we get to go inside his head and see how he thinks and how he feels about what’s going on around him.
With Maya, the time that we do get to control her in 2-4 is extremely short and doesn’t exactly allow us to get into her head. That’s not a point against her however as we do see her react to what’s going on when we aren’t in control of her. It makes sense that it would be extremely short though, as Maya is currently kidnapped when we do control her and the areas you can have her go aren’t very numerous.
Still as much as I argue that Phoenix fits the central character and protagonist mold more than Edgeworth and Maya do, I believe that all three characters are important in their own unique ways.

starstruck (4)
Here it is... finally! It’s ~angsty~ but it was really fun to write.
I will say, I realized while writing this that the timeline of this fic is sooooo short but hey, its fiction, so I guess anything can happen lol. I tried to resolve it in later chapters but it’s definitely quick moving in these initial chapters.
There’s a lot of italics in this one lol
Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 Chapter 5 Chapter 6 Chapter 7 Chapter 8 Chapter 9
Fandom: Thomas Stanley Holland
Ship: Tom Holland x Reader (eventual)
Setting: LA in general
Word Count: 2240 yeet
Warnings: angst, some mild language
Rating: still k+ right now
Last time on starstruck...
“Hey what’s going on? Uh huh. No, we actually have it handled. I might or might not be with her right now… no it’s fine. Seriously, we are laying low! We’re on the way to the hotel right now. Alright, alright I’ll see what I can do. See you in a few.”
And with that, he hung up, turned to you, and said, “That was my manager. Apparently we’ve got a problem.”
                            __________________________________
You pulled underneath the awning of the posh hotel Tom was boarding at, the kind of place you only dreamed of staying.
Sure, your family wasn’t poor, but your parents definitely weren’t the type of people to spend a lot of money on hotels. They claimed to enjoy spending more money on the “fun” parts of vacations than where you slept at night.
To each their own, you supposed.
Tom wanted you to come inside, per request of his manager, so you figured you would drop him off and park so you wouldn’t be seen together.
The valet had other plans, however, pulling you out of the car and exchanging your keys with a numbered slip of paper.
It all happened so fast that for a moment you just stood there, stunned. You snapped out of it when the man began to drive off and Tom grabbed you to lead you inside.
The lobby was massive and covered with marble flooring. A large, plush rug covered many of the tiles and on top of it sat some luxurious couches and armchairs, framing a huge TV on the wall.
On the other side was a long marble counter that seated hotel staff, who stood at the ready upon seeing Tom.
You also couldn’t help but note the smell, a light, sweet floral scent wafting through the air pleasantly.
This must be rich people scent you thought to yourself.
Due to the nature of it being midday, very few people were seen in the lobby, and Tom led you straight through to a hallway and past the main elevators, his hand resting on your lower back the entire time.
“I have access to a service lift so less people will see,” he explained, as if he’d just read your confused mind.
You walked briskly with Tom through the winding hall, finally ending up at the alternate elevator, where he swiped his key card and the doors slid open with a few creaks.
You tapped your foot nervously as you passed floor by floor, letting go of a breath you didn’t realize you were holding upon reaching the top.
Once again, you followed behind Tom through the hall and to his room. You stood awkwardly in the doorway, clenching onto the straps of your beach bag, as he entered to find more suitable clothing.
After disappearing for a moment, he popped his head back out.
“You can come in, you know. This might take a few minutes.”
You stepped further into his suite, making your way to the sliding doors attached to a balcony. Looking out you could see Los Angeles in full light, the people and cars below feeling so out of reach, like nothing you had ever experienced in your city.
You seemed so out of place in the heavily decorated room still in beach clothing and legs covered in sand.
You could hear Tom rummaging through the drawers and walked over, giving a gentle knock on the open door.
“Having trouble, twinkle toes?” you joked at the way he pillaged through his clothes. He smiled at your commentary.
“Maybe a bit. Do you need anything? A drink, snack? The fridge is stocked so take anything you like.”
You were surprised at his generosity and at how little he cared about paying for that stuff. In your family, everything in the hotel room was off limits if it wasn’t free.
“I think I’m good but do you mind if I use your restroom? I really need to rinse this sand off and put on some real clothes.”
“Go right ahead,” he gestured to the bathroom door.
The bathroom was also massive, especially for a hotel. The shower thankfully had a handheld spray head so you were able to just target and rinse your legs. You tugged on some athletic shorts and a loose tank top to replace your former garments.
You quickly used the toilet too and went to wash your hands, not believing how many fancy soaps and lotions covered the counter.
As you lathered, a small bottle caught the corner of your eye. It was a light yellowish color and read “OBSESSION for men.”
Of course he would wear Calvin Klein cologne. Now I know.
You finished up and made a final once over in the mirror, fixing some stray hairs in your ponytail and opening up the door.
You stopped in your tracks as your eyes laid upon Tom, who was shirtless with his back to you, the elastic of his underwear poking out of his pants’ waistline.
“You’re a pretty big fan of Calvin Klein, huh?” you asked, referring to both the cologne and his boxers. He turned around, giving you a view of his bare chest, which didn’t disappoint, a fact that you pretended was annoying.
“Hah, yeah. I really want to do an ad campaign with them if you couldn’t tell,” he bent over to pick up a shirt from the bed and toss it on.
“Well with the cologne and underwear you’re pretty much a walking billboard.”
“You like the cologne?” he asked, causing your face to heat up. You knew a blush was present and probably obvious, so you decided not to lie.
“Yeah, actually I do. It’s a nice scent. It also happens to be all over my bed right now thanks to a certain someone,” you tipped down your chin and raised an eyebrow accusingly.
“You want it? The company actually sent me like… eight bottles and a bunch of clothes not too long ago after I posted on Instagram about them. I can’t get rid of them fast enough,” he offered, walking towards you.
“What? No! I couldn’t just take that from you. What would I tell my friends when they see men’s cologne bottle in my room? I can’t say ‘oh yeah Tom Holland gave it to me’ and it would be majorly out of character to tell everyone that it’s what you wear.”
He went past you into the bathroom and rummaged through a toiletry bag, muttering an “aha!” when he pulled out another bottle identical to the one on the counter, except this was sealed and full.
“Seriously Tom I can’t just tak-” you started when he dropped the bottle into your bag.
“Whoops,” he quipped, “no take backs. Now your bed can forever smell like me”
You were ready to argue again (with an undeniable smile on your face) when there was a loud rapping on the main door.
Tom grimaced at you to wordlessly send a message of ‘prepare yourself’ as he took a deep breath in and headed out of his bedroom. You silently followed into the living room and watched Tom open the door, where a well dressed man and woman pair stood talking.
                            __________________________________
At first you and Tom together discussed the plan you had made at the beach with his manager and publicist, neither of whom seemed to like the idea very much.
They asked to speak with Tom privately, so you relocated back into the bedroom and sat on the side of his bed, reminiscing on how the roles were almost reversed compared to only two evenings prior.
You were only in there for about ten minutes, but it seemed like hours. You were too anxious to mess with your phone and instead looked out his window.
There was a quiet knock on the door before Tom opened it. You recognized the steely look in his eyes and the way his jaw was clenched.
He motioned for you to come out, and almost immediately after stepping into the living room his manager started talking to you.
“So, y/n, right? I’m gonna have to give this to you straight. You cannot be seen with my client ever again,” she stated bluntly, “it’s nothing against you, of course, but Tom here needs to maintain a ‘single’ rep until this movie is no longer in theatres and frankly you’re jeopardizing the whole thing.”
Your eyebrows shot up and you weren’t happy to hear this woman’s feigned criticisms.
“I’m sorry, but Tom is the one who sought me out. I never liked him, you could ask any person who knows me and they would tell you the same. I’m only here because Tom asked me to meet him about getting rid of this whole ‘scandal’ or whatever you want to call it. So if anyone is jeopardizing Tom, it’s himself.”
The publicist took a step forward.
“Look, miss y/n, it’s really nothing against you, we just want to maintain his image, and the best way to do so would be for us to go online and tell everyone he helped you get medical attention for an injury, which we all know is true, and end it at that. It makes Tom look like a hero, and you’ll be popular for weeks with your peers I’m sure,” he explained, angering you further.
“I never asked for this. I don’t want attention. I don’t want the world, or more importantly my best friend, to find out I’ve been lying about the guy I used to hate. Do you realize how many rumors this will fuel? This is ridiculous and I can’t allow you to put out my information like this.”
“Oh, well. Too bad. I just sent the tip to TMZ and they’re posting the story tonight,” he replied, “and Tom is going live on Instagram at 4:00 to address it the way we told him to and you two can’t be seen together again. Text all you want like you have been, but no public contact. Unless of course we want to do a ‘girl saved by hero reunites with him’ thing. Oh man would that look so good-”
“I’m done. This is so sick. Tom,” you looked directly into his eyes, “never contact me again, you disgusting cheap sellout bastard,” you spat, a fire in your own eyes like nothing anyone had ever seen from you.
“Y/n I-“ he began, but you were already heading to the door. You could hear footsteps behind you and the door slam shut but you kept power walking towards the main elevators, hoping they were the opposite direction from which you and Tom initially came.
“Wait!” he cried out, finally catching up and grabbing your elbow.
You threw his hand off but stopped moving forward and instead spun around to face him. Tears had made their way down your cheeks by now and you weren’t any happier to be so vulnerable in front of Tom.
Never in your life did or expect the next (or even last) guy you’d cry over would be Tom Holland.
“Y/n, please listen,” he pleaded, his face was also red, as if he were going to cry himself. You stood firm and gave him an expectant glare, so he continued.
“I don’t want to do this, I really don’t. Please understand that I have to, though, no matter how much this hurts. We can still talk. I was so drawn to you the second I saw you in that crowd just last week and I could’ve never imagined how close you could become in the short amount of time we’ve known each other. Please, babe, I don’t want to lose you.”
Anger flashed inside of you again and you felt your chest tighten at the bomb he’d just dropped..
“Do you really, Tom? Do you really care? Because to me it sounds like you actually have a choice here, but you’re too much of a pushover to do what’s right. If you really cared, you wouldn’t do this to me. I was serious back there. Don’t talk to me again, and definitely don’t call me babe if you do.”
“I’m so, so sorry, y/n,” Tom’s voice finally broke, and you could see the way his lip quivered as he continued, “I’m sorry I ever got you into this mess.”
“Me too,” you whispered.
You wiped more stray tears and turned, looking back one last time into the face of the broken-hearted celebrity, hoping it was the last time you would ever see his face, but knowing it wouldn’t be the end of it.
                            __________________________________
You exited the elevator, which you were glad was empty. More tears had fallen on the journey down and you mustered up everything you could to stop them, at least until you were off the premises of the hotel.
Though knowing you looked like a wreck, you walked through the hotel lobby with head held high, looking straight forward at the large front doors.
Your numbered ticket was in hand and you gladly gave it to the valet so he could pull up your car.
It was getting harder to hold it together as you waited. Finally, he appeared and parked the car in front of you.
He held out the keys and then stood directly in front of you, silently pleading for a tip, even though he could probably see the obvious anguish on your face.
Finally, you gave in, rolling your eyes as you dug through your bag for a spare $5 bill and slapped it into his hand with disdain.
“How kind. Have a nice day, ma’am!” he voiced cheerily.
You fought the urge to flip him off as you sat down in the driver’s seat and began the journey back home, dread filling your stomach the closer home became.

ok, let's leave the false start au for now. instead pick from: 1) klavier, especially his brother related trauma and his working relationship with miles and phoenix (because i like the 'he's part of what cost phoenix his badge' but 'he's a genuinely good man' conflict) 2) your thoughts on aa anime (which was sooo bad but it had a few nice moments) if you watched it. 3) your next fic idea teaser (if applicable).
okay haha... why pick? I’ll do all three.
1) I love Klavier, I think he has a lot of potential to be a really interesting character, I think Capcom has no idea what they’re doing with him. He had the potential to be the “Edgeworth” of 456 but they just completely threw him to the side. I was having a similar conversation with someone else a little while ago... that what Capcom did with Klavier’s character arc is basically if Miles had the first game, then showed up briefly in Turnabout Big Top for JFA and that’s it, and then had an offhand mention in Trials and Tribulations. And, of course, no investigations games either. Klavier had that sorry cameo in Turnabout Academy, meanwhile Miles was part of the whole emotional arc of JFA. It’s just... very sad that he had so much potential but Capcom completely squandered it in exchange for “ja ja achtung herr forehead i’m a rockstar ;)” that he is now. Having a whole three games for him to work out his brother-related trauma, like how Miles got to work out his DL-6 related trauma in the original trilogy, would have been great for him! but alas.
I think his working relationship with Miles is pretty good; I think Miles probably had serious doubts at first, because he would have believed in Phoenix’s innocence, but we know that Klavier was abroad with his singing career during the seven-year-gap iirc and Miles wasn’t Chief Prosecutor until just after the events of AJ. So by the time they had any meaningful interactions, Miles knew Klavier as one of the few prosecutors that sought the truth and wasn’t corrupt, so I think they’d actually get along pretty well (as long as their conversation is restricted to Truth And Justice haha, probably don’t have a ton in common beyond that besides trauma.)
Phoenix on the other hand... probably spent seven years holding at least a bit of resentment against Klavier for taking away his badge. So I think it would probably always be at least a little awkward between them. But Phoenix did trust him enough by Turnabout Succession to run the Jurist Trial, and Phoenix would be able to recognize that, yeah, he is a genuinely good person and was as screwed over by Kristoph as Phoenix was. And Klavier probably will always feel guilty for having wrongfully accused Phoenix and throwing his life into turmoil for those seven years, plus Phoenix’s disbarment ties into all his complicated feelings regarding Kristoph, and I don’t think that either of them are actually all that good at having deep interpersonal conversations about their feelings. (See: Phoenix’s reaction to Miles being dead being “don’t ever speak of him to me again” instead of talking things through, Klavier having to deal with all the stuff that comes from being a rockstar re: having to keep everything private.) I think they’d eventually reach some sort of understanding, but I don’t think they’d ever /really/ be able to get over the events of disbarment, even though they each think the other is a good person and they can get along well enough.
(... That got long, that should be my longest one, though.)
2) Thoughts on the AA anime: I’m not an anime person, really, I’ve barely watched any at all, so I can’t vouch to its quality as an anime. I do know a lot about ace attorney though haha, and I definitely think it’s a pretty poor adaptation, though I guess it’s understandable given time constraints and the like. (But did they really have to make Adrian Andrews and Celeste Inpax sisters??? And erase Miles’ trauma?? come on.) I did like the bonus episodes though, the childhood ones with Miles and Phoenix, and I found the one with Kurain village very informative (and also influenced some of my headcanons regarding it.) I read a post a while back about how the anime would have been much better if it was all original cases or slice of life-type stuff, and I agree, the original episodes were much better than the adaptations, likely because the adaptations didn’t live up to the expectations set by the games.
And even though I feel that way about the anime, I probably would still want adaptations of other games too, though I don’t think they would because Capcom only likes the original trilogy. It’s fun to see them animated in some ways, and more bonus episodes would be nice.
3) there are a lot of fic ideas floating around in my docs, but the one that /should/ be done next is basically “Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright but it goes horribly wrong”, which I can’t get into much detail without spoiling the game and/or the fic and I don’t know if you’ve played that one haha.

around june of last year, i decided to revive my writing blog as one of the many potential stress-relief methods i could think of.... i didn’t think i’d be able to keep it active for long since work + family duties keep me preoccupied most of the time, but eyyy!!! so far i haven’t lost the motivation to keep going back to this blog, and i even managed to keep it afloat for half a year!!! amazing!!! (•̀o•́)ง
and now here we are halfway through 2020!!! it’s waaaay overdue but here’s a big T H A N K  Y O U  V E R Y  M U C H ! ! ! to everyone and anyone who dropped by this blog last year + all them likes, comments, reblogs...... please know that i’m still i n c r e d i b l y grateful for the support & interest in the content i’ve posted up!!!! tbh my activity’s still hella sporadic so it’s really amazing for me that i even gained new followers.... i’m very honored to have all of you stick around my blog despite my irregularity!!!!!!!! (༎ຶ ෴ ༎ຶ)
it’s also overdue, but i slowly managed and finally cleaned up the blog like i’ve been meaning to do + changed the blog name to match my ao3 handle for consistency!!! i make no promises to be super active... but i’m sure that i still want to continue writing & keep this blog alive!!!!
again, thank you all for your time + reading my works!!!!!!  ∩( ´∀` )∩ work commentary on the rest of my works last year follows under the cut!
oct 1 // hero’s journey
a drabble on blanc + oliver about the alices... now that i think of it, calling the first alice first alice is kinda funny considering that alice is really her name... or is it?
i do hope blanc’s route talks about her a bit, haha! i mean, i wish cybird remembers that they’ve been dropping the occasional background tidbits about her... like for example, her pocketwatch (that she gave to blanc eventually) having a magic crystal engraved into it.... her potentially leaving a fucking globe in the black army’s possession (like... wow... u fell with that thing????????)....
plus, i just find it interesting that she was remembered by cradle as a heck of a troublemaker lol! it also makes you wonder who among the main cast met her, blanc aside... though it’s not stated when exactly she fell into cradle, so maybe only blanc had the opportunity of meeting her...
so does blanc speak of her fondly bc she’s a woman, or is there something else??? has he been frequently visiting the land of reason pre-game??? has he found the first alice’s antique shop / met her again??? does he still try to figure out the reason why there’s a magic crystal engraved into the first alice’s pocketwatch????? hmmmmm......
on another note, it would be hilarious if cybird pulls a peter pan 2......... since we can’t pull off a mother-daughter relationship like wendy & jane’s, what if alice the second is somehow actually related to the first alice?? and while she’s completely different from her predecessor, blanc finds himself falling for alice the second........ just like he fell for the first alice? drama!
that’s just a random thought but kidding aside, i do hope blanc’s route is hella interesting bc i think he’s our mr. exposition for knowing more about cradle itself lol
oct 1 // fair (?) ladies & phony (?) enchanters
a result of going manic a few days after seeing harr’s trailer + route release.... ahaHAHA I’M STILL WILLING TO PLAY UR ROUTE IN JP HARR (if i actually had time to sit down and translate gET REKT)
i liked writing these drabbles and i think they’re cute but tbh they did nothing to ease my curiosity about harr’s route.... if anything else, it became even w o r s e  haha........................
if i think of blanc to have a cradle-centric route, i do hope harr’s route is magic tower-centric! naturally it will be since he’s got history there, but i hope a lot of my questions about the magic tower will be answered.....
will harr’s perspective of the magic tower be in the eyes of a test subject or a disciple???? he was scouted by the magic tower, but it wasn’t stated what he was doing exactly..... going by hints + loki’s & zero’s routes, it’s more of him being a disciple, so there’s bound to be guilt.......
hopefully alice’s characterization in his route is good + we get a fun group dynamic with loki!!! their potential.... the most(?) notorious criminal of cradle, a sought after test subject, and that one girl who nullifies all magic; a renegade trio lurking around the forbidden forest.... what an odd bunch!
oct 4 // god is a five minute hymn
a religious themed fic with lancelot & alice - tbh i don’t even know why religion was the first thing that came into mind when liz and i were talking about cultural differences, lol.
on that note though! i personally like thinking that if ever cradle had a semblance of a religion, it would be polytheistic & nature-centric, and not strictly practiced - the stratocracy of both territories i’d like to think makes it harder for religion to have a voice, much less have one that is practiced by the general population. the only thing general about it is that the religion centers or has magic crystals as an important factor... or something. yeah.
that aside, i think i specifically chose lancelot in this piece for the sole reason that his canonically stated lack of common sense, in my opinion, gives him the curiosity of a child sometimes - there’s no sense of malice or doubt, just the pure innocence of wanting to know something....... religion does that to kids, especially when introduced to it at first.
rereading the fic makes me think of the instances where when faced with dire or unsettling situations, people turn to faith as a life line.... well, i’m not sure if i had that subconsciously in mind when writing alice, but that does give a spin to it....
oct 6 // flow like the river nile
a spontaneous red army-centric fic! it certainly turned out better than i expected... i liked the formatting i used for this one!
if cybird can give us more about the pre-game suitors it would be great, tbh! and while the stuff about them in school is interesting, i’d like to see more about when they assumed their positions + combat scenes! the neutrals are special cases, but knowing more about their living conditions + daily lives is also a treat...
i was thinking of adding one last snippet about lancelot in the eyes of the reds, but i scrapped it out and switched it to alice & lancelot’s conversation about duty - it could’ve worked better if i stuck to using the what is your duty? question, but i scrapped it eventually too. ah well. it does look good enough as it is.
oct 7 // seeking out phantoms
a mandatory(???) odd one out aka content that’s not ikerev, haha! i missed fe:a all of a sudden...
i never got around to writing properly for this fandom tho, what a shame - i’ve got some bits of pieces in my drafts that looked interesting and easy enough to pick up, and this was one of them.
robin investigating more of their plegian heritage could’ve been a good subplot tbh... i still wish there was something like a paralogue or dlc about it, bc honestly the valm arc goes a bit slow until you get to the future past revelations. ah well.
and gaius bc first husband for the win.... not like i actually had the guts to marry anyone else in my other save files lololol
nov 7 // push me off a bridge (to catch me as i fall)
my longest project of 2019, holy shit! i didn’t know i still had it in me to write something past 10k... i need more of that motivation + energy....
there’s nothing much to say about this since i blabbed about everything in the post-reading notes, but as much as i fought myself to get this done, i really enjoyed writing a long fic again! hopefully i can get myself to write another one this year...
nov 18 // beloved, beloved, let me be clear
18 sentences on zero & alice + macross frontier references! man, when i really got to the point about the earrings i was thinking of sheryl a lot....
kept it in sentences cause i didn’t have enough time to put up a decent ficlet! but i really wanted to get my screaming out of my system....... i used to do sentences + three word sentences challenges before, and doing one again was pretty fun!
but really.... zero’s route kept me happy for days???? their buildup + dynamic was something i was totally w e a k for, no joke..... thank gods the collection event was going on, bc i really made good use of my stocked chapter tickets lolol!
i was especially excited come the ball scene, and that cg..... a h a h a.... i need more of those pretty cgs where i can see alice’s face + costume change.......
nov 20 // coloring inside the lines
jonah + alice + makeup!!!! tbh this was really fun, i enjoyed writing this one - if i remember, this was a fic that i managed to continuously work on the day i thought it up!
jonah may not be my best boy but tbh i find writing him very easy - i guess it’s because i’m very fond of characters like him!!! those uptight nobles who are as prideful as hell but can definitely live up to their name + are more capable than their bragging suggests... idk if there’s a general trope name for these doods, but i especially like analyzing their motivations + convictions!!!
i liked how i ended it, but i apparently i made an actual ending that’s now a snippet in my drafts - jonah & alice head to the ball, and somewhere along some bystanders’ flow of conversation someone drops a comment about jonah’s lips looking... quite more luscious than usual, lolol. so t h i r s t y. upon hearing this, alice can’t seem to stop smiling for some reason.....
nov 27 // blue fields, verdant skies
a practice drabble set centric on a ray/alice development that i liked so much i made it into a series - plus, it’s black army content and honestly i need to write more of them! my red army bias is showing whoooooops
it’s a feudal + arranged marriage au, with the latter... being quite spontaneous. it’s those types of marriages where neither have even met - not even once - only to face each other come the wedding... so it’s a given that audiences from both parties are rather curious how this will turn out.
since i had the theme of fate in mind, ray was the automatic pick for the male lead. the rest of the black army is a given and for kicks, i added dean and dalim! i actually want to write about them + mousse, but since i’m still unsure on their characterizations i’ve been holding them off.... but i gave in anyway.....
alice is again named for word count convenience purposes since it’s in actual 100 words aka drabble form! i have planned scenes + an ending already in mind, but going there is pretty hard bc.... i still have to write the scenes in between + resist temptation to expand further on other scenes, haha....
initially i was planning to keep it updated here as well, but any more updates of this are on ao3 instead! the formatting looks better there instead of my blog tbh, and it also gives it a sort of muted tone to the story that works with me!
this is also the 31st fic in this blog, marking an end of the challenge liz bestowed to me lolol - since i brought this blog back to life around june, i was dared that by the end of the year, i should’ve posted more than 15 fics to add up to the initial 15 i had already posted before, thus the numbers on my fics back then.... now that i actually succeeded, i can stop counting lololol!!!! tho hopefully i can still be pretty active this year....
dec 22 // duck, duck, bullet
oliver & fenrir on guns... this probably wins as the most spontaneous idea i had on my head - tbh, i wasn’t even sure where i was going with it at first! but i’m sure i was suddenly thinking about that one detective conan movie.... then it became kid!oliver with a gun.....
i wonder if he tests the bullets at night, when he’s in adult form.... then again, kid!oliver with a gun still works.... say that because he’s a genius inventor, he made some models to serve as his shooting targets.... but another thought that amuses me more is.... blanc does the bullet testing for him!?
lololol i already thought about blanc being oliver’s live target, but i also find blanc with a gun very interesting.......... i mean, blanc certainly doesn’t look like he can fight, but who knows??? i mean, mousse is the former ace of hearts, but i still can’t imagine him fighting..... appearances can be deceiving....
the two aside, i wonder how fenrir even met oliver and got him working on his bullets........ was it through blanc or other connections???? how long have they been seller and buyer???? does anyone else commission anything from oliver?????? hmmmm.....
dec 23 // terms of surrender
i’ve been told by liz + luci + other friends that i needed to practice writing more.... cheesy fluff. i’m not sure if this sirius/alice piece counts, lol. in fact, i think it’s my definition of fluff i see here - and it translates to not exactly fluffy at all!
tho if you want me to be honest about it - when i write suitor/alice stuff, how alice was characterized in the suitor’s route is still my basis for how i’ll write her, and sirius’ alice................ haha......... i think she’s the alice that’s honestly easy to write but i choose to avoid..........
i don’t dislike the sirius/alice dynamic per se, tho. i do find it cute, especially if cybird stops emphasizing the issue of maturity in the relationship on alice’s side. i understand - i really do - that it’s a potential issue in the relationship, but...... that’s not the only problem you can possibly have as time passes, right?????
on another note, it’s funny that only sirius gets to be harped about the maturity due to age difference issue - setting aside blanc, who heavens know how old he is, lancelot’s 29 and since alice is presumed to be around ray + fenrir’s age, you could say that she’s 24 or even 23 to be safe.... so that makes a 5 / 6 years difference but it’s never brought up, lol. but i guess it’s because unlike lancelot, the black army’s been making sirius’ age a running gag....
anyway, this piece is pretty decent! i was thinking of something along the lines of mornings between a “married couple”.... there were two scenarios i had in mind, and i opted to write this one out first.... maybe i’ll have the second one posted up here another day.
dec 28 // a chain of black thrones
pre-game!sirius & ray and bc i was thinking a lot about the previous chosen, the former jack of spades!!! i wonder if the armies have a set age for retirement lolol... it would be awesome if there was still a chosen who’s already past his 50s or something, haha!
since sirius was constantly badgered to take on the role of king, i was also wondering about how long the black army was ‘king-less’... i mean, if the tension between both armies was really as great as they say, having no king puts the black army at a precarious position... i also thought that ‘nah, maybe there was a king or something but maybe the black army didn’t like him or something so they insisted that sirius take it instead’ but sirius’ 1st anniv. epilogue says otherwise - there really was a period that the black army had no king, wow. how the heck did they deal with that???? surely the red army saw this as a display of vulnerability....
can the black army’s chosen choose to leave their posts when they feel like it??? when they’re defeated by a challenger, what happens to them - a demotion, or do they serve under the ‘new’ chosen??? does the black army’s chosen change constantly because of their meritocracy + challenger system??? like, how do they deal with that, and do they announce their changes in chosen each council meeting??? each new question just snowballed my curiosity, whoops...
there were so many angles i thought of but i decided to settle for addressing the king-less state of the black army... through the eyes of a veteran who’s probably served many kings throughout his time of service as part of the black army’s chosen.
i gave this jack of spades character a name, actually - garret folner. maybe someday i’ll write him again, bc i actually enjoyed thinking about the present + past chosen interactions - maybe i’d think about that for the red army, but this time i find the black army’s side more interesting for this situation.
dec 29 // steadfast tin soldier
a zero/alice piece for zeroweek - i was about to post pt. 1 as a standalone, but then i just thought about how.... zero bought alice a gown.... but never got to dance with her at the day of the ball..... so i rushed to add pt. 2 haha!
with the addition of pt. 2 it looks cut short tho - i did think of putting a scene in between, but no good ideas came into mind bc i was too fascinated with the dancing scene... i swear at some point i will find myself writing a fic or a part of a fic that’s a dance scene for the rest of the ikerev suitors + alice....
this is the kind of fluff i live for, actually... i’m totally fine with the steamy content cybird throws during events + bonus stories, but if i were to be honest i say.... where’s my non-sexual intimacy????? the simple, wholesome stuff?????????????????
man, i feel hilarious for typing that out..... but well, i guess it’s a matter of different strokes for different folks, lol!

A Muted Hue of Grey (14/14) -- CSBB
Tumblr media
Summary: Emma Swan liked being a PI in Boston. It was a fun job, she had an okay income and she was a good one at that, so there was no logical reason to try and leave. Except for the fact that she wanted to, so badly. And, when she received a job offer for what seemed to be the opportunity of a lifetime, she did exactly that. Leave. Run. All the way to London. The job was simple: trailing a man called Killian Jones. Easy enough.
Well, until things get complicated, that is.
Rating: M (previous mentions of alcohol abuse, violence, and sex)
Wordcount: 3415

A/N: Here we are, the last chapter. This is such a surreal moment because after more than a year this story is over and done. This @captainswanbigbang experience has been one of a lifetime and has taught me so much!
One last thank you to @ofshipsandswans and @acourtoftruelove. Honestly, I can't even properly express how important these two have been for this fic, its successful completion, and just in my life in general. I both love you loads.
Not to forget my amazing artist @shady-swan-jones who has made epic art for this fic, who is just such a lovely person and who, out of all the possible fics, picked mine, for which I am very thankful.
Without further ado, one last time, A Muted Hue of Grey
---------------------------------------
“Emma, no.”
“Killian.”
He raised his eyebrows.
“Emma,” he repeated, his blue eyes serious as he kept eye contact and shook his head.
She rolled her eyes before returning the look.
“I have to go home,” she said.
“No, you don’t,” he disagreed.
His arm snaked around her waist, pulling her back to him. The bedcovers shifted, baring her legs as she attempted to wriggle out of his hold and get out of bed.
“I haven’t been home in three days,” she told him, reminding him of how one evening together had shifted into a night together which had then merged into another one and another.
Not that she had any qualms with it.
None whatsoever.
Especially with the way his lips were pressing feather-light kisses against her spine.
“Stay.”
Emma couldn’t bring herself to say no. Not to him, not to the way his hair was so playfully mussed, not when the crinkles near his eyes appeared again, not when they were in such a good place.
“Okay.”
-/-
They hadn’t been in this place for long. It had taken a lot of talking and arguing and reasoning to get there. A lot of hurting and painful introspective. But it had been for the best and so she’d endured it. He had too. Because they thought it was worth it.
And honestly, it was worth every tear that had been shed, every long silence that had taken place.
What she got in return was more than anything she could’ve hoped for.
-/-
“Doesn’t it bother you that he’s still free?”
Killian looked up from his book, his brow instantly furrowing. He didn’t need more to know who she was talking about; they hadn’t mentioned his name in weeks, hadn’t encountered him in the time of peace they’d received.
But it had been nagging Emma. He was still out there and as much as they could try and ignore his existence, he still roamed around London being his psychopath self.
Something she struggled with. Call it a savior complex but it felt unfair to have been such a big part of his malfeasance and not prevent others from his wrath and psychotic behavior.
Killian put his book aside and wrapped his arms around Emma’s ankles, pulling her closer to him on the couch.
“This again?”
She sat up and leveled her eyes with him.
“I know you don’t like to talk about it but it has to bother you as much as it bothers me. What happened to try and prove his guilt?”
“I found things that are more important.” His hand brushed over her cheek, the warmth of his hand conveying tenderness along Emma’s skin.
She leaned into his touch, the sudden emotion creeping up her throat. It wasn’t unusual for him to express affection, show how much he cared for her but it still affected her. She wasn’t used to being that adored. And then there was something else.
She hadn’t said I love you yet.
She wanted to say I love you almost every moment she spent with him. But it got stuck on the tip of her tongue every single time.
“I get that but what if he sends his minion to hurt you again? Or other people. What if he goes for Anna or Elsa? I just don’t like that he’s out there, Killian.”
He sighed while averting his eyes from her, placing his chin on her knees. He had to know she was right. She was also pretty certain he felt the same way. His good form was ingrained into him, a crucial part of who he was. He’d want to do the right thing.
Emma placed her hand on his cheek and gently turned his face to her again. In a sad way, her lips curled.
They had to do the right thing.
“What do you want to do?” he asked, the sadness reaching him too.
“Maybe try taking another route? A more legal one this time?” She cocked her head in suggestion.
“We would have to find someone to help us legally, but Gold has people everywhere. They cannot be one of Gold's puppets.”
“I might know someone.”
Might was a wrong word. She knew the perfect someone.
-/-
“Did you ever tell me he went to law school?”
An ambulance raced passed them as they walked on the street, synchronized steps sounding against the concrete. It wasn’t far, only two blocks, but Killian had still grabbed her hand to walk the way.
Emma swung their linked hands.
“I might’ve? I don’t remember.” She shrugged. She’d never thought Samir being a lawyer would be something she’d need but here they were: on their way to his shop.
“And he works in a shop?”
Emma checked the street for incoming cars before quickly crossing and pulling Killian along.
“It’s his dad’s,” she explained. “There’s a whole story behind it, I’m sure.”
“Well, I believe you.”
“Why thank you, Jones, for that assurance.”
He winked in response, eliciting a smile on Emma’s face.
The shop appeared from behind the corner and she smiled. It had been a while since she’d seen Samir, fewer midnight snacks and drinks that needed to be bought recently. Maybe his theory about being a not so happy single was correct.
This was also the first time Samir and Killian would meet and she was looking forward to it. Her favorite people in this city had to meet at some point, and even if this visit wasn’t just for pleasure, it still meant something.
The door opened, the bell rang and they were inside.
The store was empty but not for long as Samir emerged from the back, a pack of what looked like cereal in his hands and blocked his view.
“I’ll be right with you!”
“Take your time, Samir,” she reassured.
As he walked to the cereal rack, back facing them, Samir spoke again: “Is that my favorite customer I hear?”
She laughed.
“It might be.”
“I hope it’s her. My sales have been suffering since she decided to disappear more and more,” Samir replied, still not turned to them.
Emma and Killian looked at each other, both raising their eyebrows with a smile.
Finally, Samir finished putting the boxes away and approached them, a smile directed towards Emma and a curious glance towards Killian and their entwined hands.
“Hi,” she finally greeted her friend properly.
“Hello,” he replied.
Killian patiently waited in silence until Emma introduced the two of them to each other.
“Samir, this is Killian,” she began. “Killian, this is Samir.”
“Nice to meet you, mate.” Killian released her hand and reached for Samir’s outstretched one, the men sharing a quick but genuine shake. “Emma has told me a lot about you.”
“You too, mate.” He nodded. “What brings you to my humble shop?”
Emma took a step forwards.
“Remember when we first talked and I told you that if I ever needed a lawyer, I’d call you?” She gave him a second to recall the memory before she continued. “The moment has come.”
Samir did not seem surprised or taken aback at all. Instead, a fire lit up his dark brown eyes as something Emma couldn’t describe as anything other than determination appeared.
“You’re taking him down?” he asked, looking at the both of them for an answer.
She sought Killian’s eyes, wanted to be sure that they were both one hundred percent sure of the path they were going to go down. When she found them, Emma knew that this was what they were doing, even if it was the last thing they did.
“We are,” she replied, the same determination that could be found in Samir’s eyes now in her voice. “If you’re up for it.”
“Rocky Road.” Samir smiled. “I’d thought you’d never ask.”
-/-
They spent hours, days, weeks searching. Searching for the smallest lead or detail that was off.  Soon they realized it was like searching for a needle in a haystack.
And it was fucking frustrating.
How could Gold never once have made a misstep? How was that even possible? All humans make a mistake at some point, so why didn’t he?
Samir couldn’t do a lot if they had nothing to go off. He couldn’t think of a charge without proof, couldn’t magically make an accusation appear out of thin air.
Killian tried using the things he’d gathered before but the tidbits of information were mostly outdated and incorrect.
Emma… well she got more frustrated by the minute and wasn’t as useful to the investigation as her companions.
It was so unfair. On paper, this man was a saint.  Donations to nonprofits, he tipped fairly, he even recycled. You name it and The Honorable Mr. Gold had most likely done it.
Which, again, was fucking frustrating.
Emma grunted, throwing one of their folders on Killian’s coffee table. She let her head drop into her hands, momentarily sick of reading and reading, processing information without discovering anything valuable, anything useful for the case they were trying to build.
A case that was currently non-existent because of said shortage of information.
She sighed against her palms and closed her eyes. An empty nothing was better than going back to the file, with information being catapulted at her.
A headache was forming between her temples and so she stayed like that, hands half-buried in her hair and forehead leaning against her palms.
Suddenly, a hand grabbed her shoulder.
“Oh god!” She jumped and placed her hand over her heart as she saw who the culprit was. “You scared the shit out of me.”
Killian stood next to her with an apologetic grimace on his lips and a plastic bag in his hand.
“Apologies, love. I did announce I was home,” he defended himself, not to take the blame off of himself but to tell her it wasn’t on purpose.
“It’s fine. It’s my fault, I wasn’t paying attention.” She got up and quickly kissed his mouth in way of greeting.
A delicious smell wafted upwards and reached her nose, making her stomach growl. She’d forgotten to eat. Again.
“You bought Chinese?”
He’d told her that he wasn’t the biggest fan of Chinese food and that he ate it maybe once every three years (and that was a broad estimate) So every time he came home with takeout, she knew he did it for her. Because she loved it almost as much as he didn’t like it. Because he’d thought of her while walking past the Chinese restaurant and wanted to make her happy.
She should really tell him she loved him.
“I was in the mood for some spring rolls,” Killian shrugged.
Emma wasn’t falling for his act and stepped back into his personal space, lips searching his again, this time for more than just a peck.
They broke apart, their chests heaving ever so slightly as they both came up for air.
“I should best put this on the table,” he said, his hand lifting the bag of Chinese food again.
Tell him.
Tell him.
Emma, tell him.
“Killian?” she blurted out, her mouth acting before her mind could reconsider.
“Aye?” He turned to her with expectant eyes which definitely didn’t help with the stress that was tormenting her body right now.
Emma took a deep breath, thanks to their earlier tiny make out session, she could attribute her breathlessness to that and not to the source of her fast-beating heart and sweaty palms.
“I love you,” she said and she felt lighter instantaneously. “I thought you should know that.”
Killian left the Chinese food for what it was and strode towards her, only three big strides before he reached her, touched her, kissed her.
She stood on her tiptoes to kiss him back, wrapping her arms around his neck.
“I love you,” he echoed the words, whispered them against her slightly swollen lips. “I thought you should know that too.”
Laughter bubbled out of Emma with the complete happiness and tranquility she finally felt, and of that earlier frustration, there was nothing left.
-/-
“Honestly, I think it’s bollocks. He must’ve paid someone to clear his records. No one is this clean,” Samir mumbled through his full mouth of spaghetti.
Emma sipped from her glass of water and set it back down on the table before taking another bite of her own food.
Quite early on, they discovered that once the three of them—Emma, Killian, and Samir—got together to discuss their plans, it usually turned into just friends hanging out for a while as they all got along extremely well. Emma had honestly been afraid that her friend and her boyfriend wouldn’t get along at first but now, they sometimes got along too well. They had a serious bromance going on and she wouldn’t say she was jealous but she wouldn’t mind if they got along slightly less either. So they went from random meetings in the middle of the day to actual planned dinner evenings for a perfect mix of business and casual.
So that was why Samir was now stuffing his face with Killian’s divine spaghetti and commenting on how he thought the situation was bullshit.
Which Emma agreed with one hundred percent.
“I know, mate, but we have nothing else to go on,” Killian reacted.
“Have we covered all bases?” Samir asked again, but they had. “Youth? Career? Family? Anything we could’ve missed?”
Killian shook his dark locks in a negative answer.
“Milah told me he had no family to speak of so that’s a dead end.”
Emma froze, her eyes popping open as she dropped her fork on the table.
Gold’s brother.
“What did you say, Swan?” Killian frowned as Emma had apparently not only thought it but had actually spoken it out loud.
She cleared her throat before repeating what she had just come to realize. “Gold has a brother.”
“A brother?” Both Killian and Samir said in unison—there was that bromance she was speaking of.
She turned to Killian and grabbed a hold of his prosthetic.
“The guy that attacked the both of us, his name is Malcolm Gold.”
“How do you know that?” he asked.
She knew it because Malcolm’s ego got hurt and he wanted to boast about his powerful name to scare her even more.
"He told me. He might be lying but there is a similarity between the two that makes me think he was telling the truth and that they are brothers."
She got up, not waiting for any type of reaction from the both of them, not having the patience to wait for them to collect their thoughts on the information she’d just handed them.
Emma had already wasted enough time by not thinking of a lead she had had all along, from way before they had decided to try and take Gold down together. She didn’t have the time to be angry with herself right now, that would come later, now she needed to grab her computer as quickly possible.
Faster than ever before, she typed in her password and pulled up some of the online tools she’d often use while researching one of her cases. ‘Malcolm Gold’ she typed in and fervently asked Zeus, the universe, to give her this one thing, to give her something to work with.
“And?” Killian asked, still seated at the table, seemingly understanding what she was attempting to do.
She looked up from the bright computer screen and smirked at her team.
“It seems our dear Malcolm isn’t as good in hiding his tracks as his baby brother is.”
-/-
Malcolm Gold was, as Emma discovered, a man of many facets. One of them being an arsonist, another one of them being a notorious drug dealer who was the supplier of a variation of cocaine called Fairy Dust.
Not the most positive of reputations. And yet, somehow, he had spent a grand total of thirty-one hours in jail.
And there it was.
A lead.
After Emma’s discovery, it was all hands on deck; it was countless all-nighters with coffee as their only fuel. It was reading and more reading until their eyeballs went dry.
It took so much but they’d done it.
She was about ready to cry when Samir told her the news.
They had an airtight case. Gold was guilty of blackmail, extortion and the fabrication and distribution of narcotics.
And the son of a bitch was going to jail for it.
-/-
They stood in the parking lot of the courthouse, Emma and Killian leaning against Killian’s Toyota and talking in low voices in case someone overheard them. This was a big moment, something they’d worked towards for months, but Emma couldn’t stop shaking.
Months of work were depending on this. Innocent lives were depending on this. Her sanity in general was depending on this. So, it was safe to say that the stakes were pretty damn high.
From across the parking lot, she saw Samir appear, dressed in a dark suit that made him look way older than his young twenty-four years. She had total faith in him, however. He was relentless and thorough. And he was her friend.
“Hello,” he greeted them and they smiled in response.
“You’re sure you don’t want to come inside too?” Samir asked.
She looked at Killian and saw the exact same answer in his eyes. They didn’t want to face him again, not after all he had done and attempted to do. The man was a maniac and the less time they had to spend in his company, the better.
“No, Samir,” Killian said in her stead. Her hands weren’t the only thing that was shaking. “This is all you. We believe in you and we want to thank you for all that you’ve done for us. You’re a true friend.” He clasped his shoulder before going for a hug.
“What about you, Rocky Road?” Samir said as he turned to her. “Will you be alright?”
“Of course,” she finally spoke, managing the tiniest smile. “I trust you completely.” Emma looked him in the eye, reassured when she saw the embers burn in his eyes. “Go destroy him.”
Samir smiled at her and nodded sternly before giving her a hug as well. “For what he did to you,” he whispered as his arms were around her, “–gladly.”
Gold was not prepared for the fury he was about to meet.
“If it’s alright with you, mate, I’m taking Emma home,” Killian said and Emma looked at him in confusion. That wasn’t what they had planned.
Before she could question it, he silently grabbed her hand and squeezed and while she didn’t exactly fully understand what he was saying, she understood enough to not disagree. He really wanted to take her home, so she’d let him. There wasn’t a lot she could do on a courthouse parking lot, either way.
“Fine by me,” Samir replied, “I’ll call you with the verdict.”
Emma was curious about what Killian’s plans were once they got home but he simply took off his jacket as they entered the apartment, toed off his shoes, motioned her to take off her own and led her to the couch once she had. He settled into it and opened his arms to welcome her, an invitation she’d glady–always– accept.
For the time they lay on the couch, there was only Killian and nothing else. No sorrow or fear, only love and warmth. Her hands finally stopped trembling.
In the peace of the purest tranquility, she fell asleep surrounded by him. His heartbeat under her head, his scent in her nose, his legs tangled with hers.
It must’ve been hours later when she woke up, her body still glued to his but the light entering through the window completely different from when they had first gotten comfortable in the sofa. Cranking her eyes open, she looked up and found Killian looking at her with soft eyes, hand smoothing over some unruly blonde hair. He bowed his head and tenderly pressed his lips to her hair.
“We won.”
She sought his eyes and saw the honesty and contentment that lovely shade of blue emitted. Emma didn’t reply to his statement, not in words anyway. She just tightened her arms around him even more and kissed his collarbone before closing her eyes and feeling yet another kiss on her skin, this time on her forehead.
And at last, the mist of grey had lifted and left just the tiniest sparkle of brightness.

He was a man without a home, without any way of finding one, until he stopped by the IT department of his sister’s company to get files off an old, battered memory card, and found a woman with curly blonde hair and bright, intelligent eyes chewing on a bright red pen and swearing at a computer screen. https://archiveofourown.org/works/12613188/chapters/28734552

But there’s only one thing in her way, wait, actually two. Two things in her way: Oliver Queen, the hot young bachelor she danced with the night of her homecoming ball, who neglected to mention that he’s after her crown alongside his uncle Malcolm Merlyn, and the fact that she has to marry within 30 days if she wants to be Queen. Ray Palmer, Duke of Keystone is sweet, sensitive, intelligent and kind and seems like the perfect choice. But marrying and falling in love are two different things. Black Wizard History Month 2019 Round Table
Every February at Black Girls Create we celebrate Black Wizard History Month, a celebration of the Black characters of Harry Potter, Black Potterheads in fandom, and magical Black folks everywhere. This year our month-long turn up included live tweets, a live show of our #WizardTeam podcast, and fanfiction hosted through our Hogwarts BSU project.
Fanfiction is a large part of fandom, and in many cases can be a place for marginalized fans to see and write themselves into the stories they love. Hogwarts BSU is a project specifically for Black writers and artists to write stories centered around Black characters, history, and magic in the wizarding world. As a way to wrap up a jam-packed month, we decided to host a round table with a few of the writers of the pieces that came out during this year’s Black Wizard History Month.
How did you get into Harry Potter?
Bianca Ramos: When I was in 7th grade, my younger cousin was assigned books 1-3 in school. It was during the conservative Christian outrage and my family asked me to pre-read them for him since I was a "reader." I knocked them out quickly and was hooked.
Delia Gallegos: Growing up, the books always peaked my interest in the library, even though I was only 5 or 6 years old. Our household was pretty religious, so my mom was wary about letting me read them. One summer, my cousin lent me Sorcerer’s Stone while we were at my grandma’s. I only got a chapter in but I knew I HAD to read it. After a lot of begging on my part, my mom relented and agreed to let me read it under the condition that she could read the first one out loud to me. The rest was history!
Constance Gibbs: I started reading Harry Potter when I was in sixth grade and someone was reading Chamber of Secrets. I can’t remember if I read that one first or if I went to Sorcerer’s Stone, but I read all three that were out at the time and had my grandma take me to pre-order Goblet of Fire, which was about to come out. I’ve been hooked ever since.
Porshèa Patterson: In 6th grade, my then-bestie told me about the series but had already lent the first book out. That summer I picked up the books from the library after learning I'd never see this bestie again due to me changing schools. Thus, Harry Potter became my new best friend.
Have you read fanfiction before? What draws you to it? Or what kept you away from it?
Bianca: I didn't read fanfiction before getting into everything going on here at Black Girls Create. I don't know why. I guess I just never found myself on that side of the internet. Now I think I’m more open to it.
Delia: I’m a long-time fanfiction reader. I first started after the 5th book came out. At the time, it was just a matter of Harry Potter sparking my imagination and there being no material to satisfy it. So, I turned to the internet. Now, engaging with Harry Potter and the fandom in a creative way is almost second nature to me.
Connie: I didn’t start reading Harry Potter fanfiction until sometime after the series was over because I didn’t want to spoil the series as it was coming out. I think I tried in 2007, when the series first ended, but it didn’t stick. But a few years later, I read a few post-series stories. Usually shippery ones involving Harry/Ginny and Ron/Hermione, but I went through a big Lily/James Marauders Era phase and I occasionally read Remus/Tonks. For the romantic stories, as we discuss on #WizardTeam often, there wasn’t a lot in the text, so it’s nice to see others’ varying but often similar interpretations on how the canon relationships could have gone with more effort put into developing them. Plus I’m a fuzzy Hufflepuff.
Porshèa: I'd started reading fanfic during the lapse between books 4 and 5, began integrating them into canon thanks to some very vivid dreams, then promptly stopped reading because there were too many books to go for me to have those problems.
What made you want to start writing fanfiction?
Bianca: I was inspired by revisiting Harry Potter through #Wizard Team, by the short stories on the site, and the complete gas up I received when I shared my ideas in the Slack. The team is a wonderful place to bounce around ideas and everyone is really supportive.
Delia: I was really young (probably too young, admittedly) when I started reading fanfiction. I started writing it on a whim. It was very much, “Hey I want to do that, too!” so I did. Being that young, you really don’t care that you don’t know how to plot a story or that you haven’t even really finished learning about grammar. You just do it because it seems fun.
Connie: I’d never written fanfiction before Hogwarts BSU/#Wizard Team. I was content to lurk in whatever fandoms I was reading fic for. I think wanted to give it a try because of something Robyn and Bayana said on #WizardTeam, and that’s where my first fic, Do Black Wizards Nod, came from. The idea of whether the Black students give each other the nod and how they would deal with that. Then I kept getting prompts or fic bunnies and it feels so much easier than when I try to write original works.
Porshèa: I've recently taken to writing fanfic because I want to fill in the holes within the fandoms I love. I'm empowered to do so because of the community that BGC has curated, the validation of headcanons, and understanding that we're the best at crafting stories from our individual lenses.
What was your inspiration for your piece?
Bianca: The complete ball drop that was History of Magic in North America and J.K. Rowling ignoring valid criticism. Like most American fans, I was excited to see the wizarding world expand to include us. However, the fact that racism — RACISM — something that plays a major part in the development of the three largest countries here, isn't even recognized on a small scale is insulting to readers. You can't tell me that a country with a history as bloody and messed up as the U.S. has wizards of every racial background being besties. It's not realistic. I also understand that maybe J.K. Rowling felt unqualified to talk about it, but I believe it can be done in a way that is both careful and makes sense.
Delia: I’ve been preaching the good word of Deanmione since February 2018. Since coming aboard the ship, I’ve been surprised to find that I am pretty much the only person sailing on it. The existing fanfic of the pairing is sparse. So when To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before came out on Netflix, I fell in love again with the story (I had read the book) and the gears in my head started turning. Then, when #WizardTeam started on Half-Blood Prince, I realized that was the perfect fit.
Connie: I’ve written a few things now, but I like thinking about the Black students forming a group and watching out for each other. I was never part of a BSU, but in high school and college I went to predominantly white schools and found myself most comfortable around my peers of color. In high school it was just natural, gravity, but I think in college I sought it out more deliberately. So I could relate to Blaise’s desire to find/start a group to help him feel less alone on campus. I remember that feeling, though I can’t say I consciously channeled it when I wrote Umoja. Other inspiration included the idea of honoring Kwanzaa in a way that helped me connect with the holiday more than I do in real life, and finding a creative way to use each principal to tell a story. And further inspiration comes from Delia and the rest of the team being instigators.
"...if you want something written about Black wizards learning within the wizarding world to be done well, you've gotta roll up your sleeves and do it yourself."  -- Porshèa Patterson
Porshèa: The inspiration for my piece comes from the wandless magic conversations throughout the books — specifically when it comes to powerful wizards and house-elves — the disappointment that is Magic in North America, and Uagadou. All of the missing elements in these spurred me into writing, because obviously if you want something written about Black wizards learning within the wizarding world to be done well, you've gotta roll up your sleeves and do it yourself.
What are some things in Harry Potter canon that you would like to explore or fix?
Bianca: As mentioned before, we can fix History of Magic in North America. I think that exploring the wizarding world here could be pretty awesome. I'd love to see stories of Indigenous wizards, Mexican wizards, or a story of Japanese American wizards and wizard immigrants (especially if they are written by someone in that community). Why did they decide to come here and what have they experienced and endured since? Also, we need to get rid of that "Cursed" play and Dumbledore and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day prequels.
Delia: I started as a Harmony shipper, believe it or not. I read others, but that was my OTP. I was just so underwhelmed by the romance in the books. Since the series finished, my biggest sore spot has been the Epilogue. They went through so much trauma. How did they work through it to get to that happy ending? How on EARTH did Hermione end up with emotionally stunted Ron (sorry Ronmione shippers, it’s all love)? Why is Harry not the DADA professor? I'd also love to fix Leta's story. I wish she could have a fully fledged story that isn’t based in tragedy. A story where she lives and is happy. She deserved better.
Connie: Like Bianca said, the global wizarding community is one thing I wish we could fix in canon. Jo did such a poor job of thinking of anywhere outside of Europe and it really hinders the story when considering how global both the fans and the Muggle world, even in Britain, are. I also wish we could remove Fantastic Beasts and Cursed Child from existence. I wish Fantastic Beasts starred an actor of color for Newt and that it was romps in the jungle searching for beasts and perhaps treasure. I wish they were adventure stories set in the ‘20s a la Indiana Jones or the Mummy franchise and not…what it is.
Porshèa: While there's a lot that needs to be fixed — see everyone else's answers — I think I only have the patience to 'fix' the ways in which Black American communities practice magic, the integration of magic and modern tech — because there are too many Muggle-borns for this to NOT be a thing — and wizarding higher education.
Are there Black characters in other media you would want to write fanfiction for?
Bianca: As of right now, no.
Delia: I don’t really see myself writing outside of my own original work and Harry Potter fanfiction. Potter is the only world besides those of my own creation that I know well enough to write in. But who knows!
Connie: There have been so few Black characters that I relate to, and I find myself not reading fanfic leading them very often. I’ve read only a few characters that were Black in other fandoms, Abigail Mills from Sleepy Hollow and Chidi from The Good Place more recently. I think I also read some fic starring Tucker from Danny Phantom (throwback!) who the fans thought had good chemistry with Danny’s sister Jazz. But there are few characters in other properties I feel drawn to enough to write, which really makes me sad. Hopefully I get more characters to want to play with and can expand my fic reading beyond shiny white people problems (or anime characters, as was my fanfiction beginnings). Perhaps some day I’ll be drawn to Doctor Who fic for those Black characters, but it hasn’t quite happened yet.
Porshèa: There is a character from the A Song of Ice and Fire series that I relate to heavily, though we know very little about her. My goal is to start on a fanfic for her after completing the Founding Home series.
Do you think Black characters get enough love in fan spaces? Why or why not?
Bianca: It depends on who the story was written for. In predominantly white stories with white main characters, Black characters are usually thrown in as an afterthought, and it shows. The same goes with color blind casting and not adjusting the story to make sense for a person of color. On the other hand, you get stories written for Black characters and characters of color like in Scandal or Pose and there is this level of care that is woven into it that changes how the characters are viewed. Fans can't help but fall in love with a fully fleshed out character.
Delia: You can read Mel’s Critical Companion piece from this month for the long answer. The short answer is, no. At best, in fandom, Black characters are often overlooked, save for when they serve a headcanon for a white character. At worst, they are overly harshly scrutinized or rejected, even though they are often one character of color out of dozens of white ones.
"At best, in fandom, Black characters are often overlooked, save for when they serve a headcanon for a white character."  -- Delia Gallegos
Connie: Definitely not. I get sad when I think about how I perhaps perpetuate this lack of love by not talking about those characters enough or, more to the point here, not reading fic starring them. But also, those characters only have a few stories on the fanfic websites or don’t get as much screen time or development to work with. Or perhaps they’re not put in situations I want to think on too often, leading me to not even go looking for “fix-it” fic where writers fix whatever bad thing happens to them. And I think the stories I like with predominantly Black characters are in recurring works where I’m waiting to see where the actual author takes them. There may be something to the idea of me just being happy they exist and not wanting to mess with them too much. Two book series I think of are the Shadowshaper Cypher by Daniel José Older and Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi. The worlds are so new and I’m just so happy to get these great characters that I’m not looking for anyone else’s take on them just yet, but maybe that will come down the line. In more established franchises, I definitely think Black characters don’t get enough love in the fandom nor by the writers/producers.
Porshèa: What they said. I do love that the actors who portray the token Black faces call out the Black fan appreciation they get, especially when Luke Youngblood and Alfie Enoch pointed out that they'd realized that the Black fans made a point to seek them out within the films during BGC-led panels at LeakyCon.
What is a character or theme in Harry Potter that you want to write about or explore in the future?
Bianca: I have a list of things that I would like to write about in Harry Potter, and it seems to grow everyday. New schools, founders, and histories. I'd also like to flesh out some characters like Mrs. Zabini.
Delia: I think even after To All the Wizards I’ve Considered Before is finished, there will still be more to be told of Dean and Hermione.
Connie: I’m interested in exploring more Blaise/Desiree as a flourishing Black couple in the wizarding world and what challenges in their relationship they may have to overcome. Also just showing Black love cuteness. I think beyond the BSUverse, Robyn and I keep trying to come up with some post-First War detective story, perhaps involving an original character or Kingsley.
Porshèa: After Founding Home, I'm going to (someday) flesh out my Parvati, Lavender, and others boss witch writers story, and my Dumbledore and Prince ‘90s fashion-off story. More after that, maybe?
Make sure to read our guests and other writers’ pieces on our Hogwarts BSU page. If you have fic you would like published, or if you would like to participate in Black Wizard History Month in the future, feel free to check out our submission guidelines or hit us up at [email protected]. Thanks for reading, and we hope to see you next February and all the months in between!

A sneak peak of my Jopper/Parent Trap AU fic to help with the content draught. It’s untitled so far. I’m still debating on a title! I’m hoping that one will come to me soon so that I can post it on AO3! I also need to come up with a good summary!
A very special thank you to @scullys-shoulder-pads for the mood boards. They set the tone so nicely. Also, this was her prompt. She’s been begging me to write a Parent Trap fic forever, so without her, this wouldn’t exist. I’ve never written an AU Jopper fic. It’s a fun challenge.
1983
The wind swirled around the yard, carrying colorful autumn leaves with it. Jane, just shy of her second birthday, was usually curious about the world around her. However, in this moment, the falling leaves didn’t hold her attention for very long. Instead, her big brown eyes were drawn to the gut wrenching sobs coming from her mother. Trapped in her Playpen, on the porch, she could do nothing but press her face against the hard side rail and watch.
“I’m sorry, El. I’m so sorry, baby.” The words were the same, over and over, like a melancholy broken record. “I love you so much.” She wasn’t talking to Jane. She was talking to the dark haired toddler that was cradled against her chest.
The front door squeaked open, revealing a tall, stubbly faced man. His expression was grim as he approached the Playpen and met her eyes. Jane smiled, big and wide, and toothy, but he didn’t smile back. Helplessly, he stared at her and then ran a hand over her dark pigtails. His mouth moved, but no sound came out.
Soon, he stepped away and turned his back to her so that he could face her mother. “Joyce. We don’t have to do this,” he said. “It’s crazy.”
At his words, Joyce cried harder. “Stop saying that! We do. We have to.”
“We don’t!”
“We’ve talked about this. We don’t have a choice.” Her voice rose, growing even more hysterical.
His hand moved through his sandy blond hair. “You can come with us. Both of you.” Again he looked towards Jane, but didn’t let his gaze linger.
Annoyed by the lack of attention, Jane noisily banged her chubby fists against the rail, but it didn’t matter. No one paid attention to her.
“No!” came Joyce’s panicked reply. Her body shook. “They’ll find me…and they’ll find El. They’ll take her away. I know it. Please believe me.”
“Joyce…” her name left his lips as a desperate plea. “This is all wrong…we can’t…I can’t do this.”
With no warning, Joyce gently pushed El into his arms. “Please, Hop.” At the sudden change, El began to cry and reached back for the comforting arms she had been ripped from. “Please take her, Hopper. Please. They’ll never leave her alone here.” Joyce grabbed onto El’s chubby hands and held them between her own. “I love you, baby. I love you more than anything in the world. Please forgive me.”
A strangled sigh erupted from Hopper’s lips as he stepped back. With the contact broken, Joyce’s hands moved to her lips. El completely broke down as he carried her away. She kicked her tiny legs and jerked her body backwards to get out of his grasp. “Momma. Momma.”
Watching the scene, Jane let out a blood curdling scream and burst into tears. She held up her arms in desperation and didn’t stop screaming until her mother picked her up. She twisted and squirmed until she could get another look at El.
“Ellieeeeee! Ellliiieeee!” Her cries were easily heard, and responded to, by El.
“Janie! Janie!”
It didn’t matter though. Their screams went unanswered. El and Hopper drove away, down the long gravel driveway and then, everything went black.
* “Jane. Wake up. Jane...Jane!”
With a strangled cry, Jane Byers sat up in bed. She took heaping gasps of air as she tried to process her surroundings. It took some time for her eyes to adjust to the pitch black room. The fresh Indiana spring air blew through the open window. It rattled the blinds and made her shiver in fear. Small, comforting hands patted her back, reminding her that she wasn’t alone. “Will,” she whispered. “Can…can you turn on the light?”
The boy, small for his age, scampered across the room and switched on the lamp. He made his way back to their bunk beds with a hand shielding his eyes. “Another bad dream?”
Eyes wide and wet, she nodded and reached for her favorite stuffed animal. The orange and black tiger was well loved, with faded stripes and a missing nose. She held it tight against her chest. “Yeah,” she sniffled.
Will was only 6, but acted much older. He was no stranger to his sister’s nightmares, and knew what to do. Gently, he pushed her until she slid her body to the other side of the bottom bunk so that he could climb in beside her. “Who’s Ellie?”
Jane swallowed hard. The dream didn’t feel like a dream. It felt real, and the terror hadn’t left her. She could still hear El’s cries. She could still feel a piece of herself being ripped away. “I dunno.”
“You were calling for her.”
“I know,” sighed Jane, her voice defeated. Her forehead ached and her eyelids were heavy. She wanted to sleep, but didn’t want to dream.
Will let out a worried gasp and pointed to her face. “Jane!”
Her brows furrowed in confusion, until she felt something wet slip out of her nose. She put her hand against it and when she pulled it back, it was smeared with bright red blood.
The boy instantly panicked. “I’m getting mom.”
“No!” she insisted, rather loudly. Her mother’s anguished cries were still fresh in her mind. Dropping her voice to a whisper, she came up with an excuse. “Let her sleep. She worked late.”
“But. You’re bleeding.”
Jane wiped her nose with her hand again, careful not to get it on the turquoise hair tie she always wore around her wrist. “I’ll be okay.” It wasn’t a lot of blood.
Will’s hazel eyes bore into hers. He was five years younger than her, but they were close. Best friends, even. His gaze drifted up to his top bunk without longing. “I’ll stay here with you.”
“Thanks, Will.” She managed a smile, even as her stomach twisted. A familiar feeling, one of emptiness and sorrow, nestled behind her ribs. How was it possible to feel so alone, even when she wasn’t? Still, she was grateful for her brother. She snuggled down under the covers and he did the same.
* Hundreds of miles away, in New York City, a strong gust of wind blew in from the open window. It startled El Hopper out of a horrible dream. The lights were on in her bedroom, and her brown eyes sought out her best friend’s blue ones. “What happened, Sara?”
Wrapped in a sleeping bag on the floor, Sara sat up. “You were talking in your sleep again. I tried to wake you up…”
El shivered and climbed out of bed to shut the window. Ten stories below, the busy city streets were full of life, but she was lost in the images from her dream. Variations of this dream had plagued her forever, but tonight...tonight it was different. Tonight...it felt real.
“What was I saying?”
“Janie.” Sara’s blond hair was sticking up in all directions. She smoothed it down before shooting her friend a sympathetic look. “Just Janie. Over and over.”
El got back into bed. Her fingers slid beneath her pillow to make sure that her favorite stuffed bear was still hidden safely away. Sara wouldn’t tease her for having it, but stuffed animals were for kids, and El wasn’t kid. She was six months shy of her twelfth birthday.
“I think...I think it was my mom, in my dream.”
“Is her name Janie?”
El’s mind was racing. She shook her head. “Her name’s Joyce.”
Sara’s brows furrowed. “Then, who’s Janie?”
Finally understanding, after all this time, El responded with an air of confidence. “My sister.”
Intrigued, Sara sat up straighter. “I didn’t know you had a sister.”
“Neither did I,” whispered El.
The girls shared a wide eyed look until a knock on the door interrupted them. The door opened a few seconds later and her father, Jim Hopper, stepped in.
“Hey El. What’d we talk about? It’s a school night, remember?” Just off a long shift, he was still dressed in his blue police uniform. He surveyed the room before moving towards the bed. “The deal was, no more babysitter, so long as you get to bed on time.”
“I had a bad dream.”
His lips curled in amusement. “A bad dream huh? That’s a new one.”
“I did!” El insisted.
“Uh, huh,” he chuckled. Then, his face turned serious. “In bed by 9. That’s the rule.” With a dramatic huff, El slid down under her covers. “Sara’s parents aren’t gonna let her over on school nights if you can’t follow the rules.” Wisely, Sara also laid down and kept quiet.
El gave up arguing.“Okay.” Positive that she could get more information in her dreams, she was eager to get back to sleep. Before she could, Hopper reached under her pillow, pulled out her stuffed bear, and tucked it under her arm. “Dad!”
“It’ll keep the bad dreams away.”
El rolled her eyes, but didn’t pull the bear away. “Love you.”
Affectionately, he messed with her hair. “Love you too, kid.”
El swatted his hand away and as she did so, her fingers grazed across the turquoise hair tie that never left his wrist. She had so many questions, and she was determined to get answers.
