Your relationship with your father used to be a secret.
You were an illegitimate child and your mother was a mistress. Taemin obviously didn’t want the world to know about his dirty secret.
So he hid you.
He hid you from his wife and your siblings.
"Mom, is dad coming?" Seven year-old you asked. This was the question you uttered once a year.
Your father was never late with any of his appointments with you. He would always show up on time, sometimes earlier. But there's always that one day of the year wherein he was either hours late or he wouldn't come at all.
That day was your birthday.
You were four years old when your mother made you understand that Taemin couldn't stay at your house since he was busy with work. You didn't question this even though you wanted to know why.
Why couldn't he stay for more than an hour a day? Why didn't he kiss your mother or tell her he loved her just like what you saw husbands did in children's books and movies?
"He's not coming because he doesn't love us. He doesn't love you." Your mother was glaring at you as if it was your fault your father couldn't come to your own birthday party.
Everything was prepared according to his liking, even the food she cooked were his favorites. It was your natal day but it looked like your mother wanted to please somebody else.
It was never about you.
"That's not true! Dad said he loves me the most! I'm his princess—"
"Enough!" She slapped you right across the face, your cheek instantly turning red.
Your eyes brimmed with tears. You also didn't understand why your mother always acted so hostile. What did you do to make her hate you this much?
You followed everything she said. You didn't like sketching but your mother forced you to do it. She kept saying that you needed to be good at it so you could beat Sin-ae's daughter.
You didn't know it that time but your mom was actually referring to Soojin. The latter was a prodigy when it came to drawing. Your mother wanted you to surpass Soojin's talent since it was the only way to become the best architect.
She was wrong though. Being able to draw beautifully wasn't the key to succeeding in the mention field. It was only a bonus.
"You have to be the best if you want your father to stay with us. Do you understand, huh? Be a good girl so your father wouldn't have to look at Sin-ae's daughter." She caressed your cheek after slapping you.
"You can do it, baby girl. You are my leverage."
You were. Your father couldn't leave his obsessive mistress because of you. Your father loved you and didn't want to abandon you, but most importantly, he didn't want Sin-ae to know that you existed.
Your mother threatened Taemin that she would expose his infidelity if he tried to abscond from his responsibilities to you.
Taemin was a powerful person, unfortunately he couldn't control your mother. She was richer and stronger than him.
Your mother's only weakness was the love she claimed she felt for your father.
At this point, you didn't know if it was love. Did she really love your father or was she just lonely?
Was your mother scared to be alone? Just like you?
"I'm not going to leave you." You remembered seven year-old Jungkook's promise to you.
You were six when you first met little Jeon. He was the son of Jong-in, another influential architect.
Taemin and Jong-in were best friends. The latter was the only person who knew about your father's secret.
Jong-in knew you. He knew your mother as well. You lived in a small world after all. Jong-in and Taemin built Castle Architectural firm. Your mother was one of their investors.
She saw the potential of Architect Kim and Jeon, but it didn't end with that.
Your mother didn't just see Kim Taemin's potential. She also saw a future with him. She acted based on desire, ignoring the fact that Taemin was already a married man with three children.
Taemin didn't seem to mind the advances of your mother. In fact, he seemed to like it. Because if he didn't, then why were you existing?
Why did he fuck a baby into her?
He wanted this to happen as much as your mother did.
And now, they weren't the only one paying for the price.
You were paying too.
You were suffering because of them. You suffered abuse from your mother and at a very young age, you came to realize that people, no matter how many times they assured you they loved you, would still end up hurting you and breaking the promise they made.
"You are!" This was your response to Jungkook when he said that he wasn't going to leave you.
You two were seven years olds. What did you know about promises and keeping them? You drilled it in your head that Jungkook was just like your father. He would end up breaking his promise.
He was going to leave you too.
"You're a liar, just like my dad!" Tears cascaded down your cheeks.
You were very upset. Your father promised to take you to an amusement park, a simple way to make it up to you for not being able to attend your birthday party. Again.
The promise was made yesterday. Taemin told you to wear your favorite onesie because you were going to Lotte World with him and Jungkook.
Taemin was true to his words. You were at Lotte World with Jungkook, wearing your favorite onesie. However, the adult accompanying you was not your father.
Taemin said he had to work so he sent a nanny to look after you and your best friend.
You found it stupid and annoying. You wanted to spend time with your father. You missed him so much. He hadn't been home for weeks now.
"He keeps saying things he doesn't mean!" You sobbed, continuing your rant.
Jungkook was only staring at you using those innocent eyes. He felt bad. His little heart was shattering.
"I hate him! He doesn't love me!" You were slowly believing what your mother told you.
Were you hard to love because you weren't good enough?
"He doesn't love me." You said again and again. "I'm not a good girl. He doesn't love me—"
Jungkook pulled you into an embrace, cutting your absurd thought.
"That's not true. I love you.." His voice sounded genuine.
You sobbed once more, breaking the hug.
"Really?" The thing about kids was that they were easy to reassure. Buy them an ice cream and voila! They’re okay again.
Jungkook didn't give you an ice cream but you believed him. You guessed you love him too, and also because the stars in his eyes were enough to make you believe that he would never ever leave you.
Nineteen years later, Jungkook was still keeping his promise.
He stayed with you through thick and thin.
"We are baking cake today, Tiger." Jungkook announced.
He sometimes called you Tiger, when you asked him why, he simply said 'because I can.'
You stopped questioning his reasons a long time ago; however, you couldn't stop yourself today.
"Bake a cake? Why?" You creased your forehead.
"Because I want to." Was his answer once again, causing you to roll your eyes.
Why did you even ask?
"Do you know how to bake a cake?"
"Nope," he grinned. "But it won't hurt to try. I've read before that baking is a good way to relieve stress..."
Jungkook brought out an apron from the kitchen cabinet and then he went near you, carefully helping you to put on the garment.
He was standing in front you, buckling the D-ring neck that was on the apron. After that, he pulled you closer, your head hitting his chest.
Jungkook encircled his arms around your waist, reaching for the strap behind you as he expertly tied it.
"I can do it, Kook," you slightly pushed him away, chuckling.
He grinned at you.
"I know...but I want to help you."
Of course he did. Jungkook had always been thoughtful and kind. This was why he invited you to his apartment.
You had been staying with him since yesterday. Today was Saturday. You slept here last night. Jungkook didn't mind. He had a spare room and even if he didn't, he wouldn't mind you staying over.
He could always sleep on the floor.
Jungkook was used to sleeping in the same room as you anyway. You used to live in the same house together.
When Jungkook's father died, he officially became an orphan at the age of fifteen. His mother died giving birth to him so no one would look after him now.
All of his relatives were living abroad, this was why Taemin decided to adopt him. Jungkook didn't change his last name. He was still a Jeon. Taemin was simply his legal guardian.
Sin-ae didn't mind that there was an additional member of the family. She could never deny Jungkook since she also treated Jong-in as a dear friend. Besides, the Kims didn't have to worry about the increase of their expenses.
Jungkook was the only heir of Jong-in. The former would inherit his father's share at Castle. Taemin was Jungkook’s fiduciary guardian. He gave Jungkook his share as soon as he reached eighteen.
Jungkook tried to compensate Taemin but the latter didn't accept the money. Instead, he urged Jeonguk to work at Castle as soon as he graduated college.
Your best friend agreed. He could never say no to Taemin. He even stayed at the Kims' mansion despite having the ability to live on his own.
Taemin asked him to stay as per Soojin's request, but two months ago, Jungkook finally moved out of the house because Kim Taehyung, the third born son of Taemin, went back to Seoul after studying and working in New York for years.
"You wanna try baking banana chocolate chip cake? I have all the ingredients here," Jungkook was waiting for you to answer.
You shrugged nonchalantly, helping him prepare.
"Fine by me."
Jungkook asked you to prepare the wet ingredients while he took care of the dry ones.
"You think this is enough?" He was sifting flour.
You coughed.
"Kook! What the hell?" You covered your nose because he was tapping the strainer grimly.
"Oopss..." His lips curled up. "Sorry!"
He wasn't sorry. Not at all. You could tell he was doing this on purpose because instead of stopping, he only used more force while tapping the strainer.
"You ass!" Gritting your teeth, you grabbed a handful of flour from the bowl and started throwing it at Jungkook.
He stopped sifting the flour, eyes widening because of what you did.
"I-It's your fault! You're pissing me off!" You stammered.
You were supposed to be mad at him, but it was you who felt shiver running down your spine when he just stared at you.
Was he mad? Was throwing a handful of flour on his face uncalled for?
"I'm sorry—what the fuck." You hissed when Jungkook also threw flour on your face.
You ended up squinting and coughing because the powder went to your eyes and mouth. It tasted like shit.
"Jeon Jungkook!" You were so annoyed you threw flour at him again.
Jungkook bursted into laughter, clearly having fun.
You two ended up having flour fight—if this was even a thing.
You had to admit that though annoyed, you couldn't help the smile gracing your lips. You liked playing with Jungkook to the point that you didn't want to stop.
You were only forced to end the fight when someone banged on his door.
"Jungkook! Open up!"
Soojin.
You were certain she was on the other side of the door.
"Is that Soojin?" Jungkook furrowed his brow, the smile on his lips was slowly disappearing.
"Yeah. I think so..."
"Huh." He furrowed his brow more. "Did you invite her?"
You shook your head.
Jungkook shrugged. "Okay. I'll ask what she wants. Stay here..."
You nodded, frantically running towards the sink so you could wash your face.
You didn't know why your heart was beating fast or why you felt as if you had done something you shouldn't have.
Maybe you had.
It was the only reasonable explanation why Soojin was glaring at you, her jaw tensed because of annoyance.
"What the hell were you two doing? I've been banging the door for so long! Didn't you hear me!?" This was the first thing Soojin said the moment she took a step in Jungkook's kitchen.
She didn't like that you and Jungkook were staying under the same roof.
"I'm sorry." You bit your lower lip, trailing off.
You didn't know what else to say. You knew your sister. Her question was rhetorical. She would only get madder if you tried to reason out.
When she was pissed, all you had to do was shut up and take the shit she would give you.
"The door is literally a few steps away! I don't understand why you can't hear me!"
Soojin continued to rant as you watched Jungkook enter the kitchen. He instantly stopped your sister's mean remarks because he could feel that it was making you uncomfortable.
"Let it go, Soojin. We apologized, didn't we?"
But Soojin just scoffed. She was about to speak again; however, Jungkook cut her off.
"There's an apron in the cabinet. Wear it if you want to join us..."
You were surprised when Soojin didn't protest. Rolling her eyes, she stomped towards the hanging cabinet to get an apron.
"What are we making?" Soojin crossed her arms.
"Banana chocolate chip cake." You simply said.
Soojin nodded, refusing to look at you.
"I'll mash the bananas." When she said this, you were expecting her to peel the bananas and use a fork to mash them.
Soojin didn't do any of this. Instead, she threw the bananas in the trash bin.
"What? The bananas are overripe." She reasoned out when you and Jungkook groaned.
"It doesn't matter. We can still use—"
"I said I don't want overripe bananas!” It was her turn to cut what Jungkook was saying.
"There's a grocery store across the street. Go buy some bananas, Jungkook."
It was hard to fight Soojin. She would just continue insisting what she wanted until you relented.
Jungkook didn't have a choice but to follow your sister, leaving you in the kitchen with Soojin.
You were thinking how to break the ice when your sister suddenly spoke.
"You didn't go home last night..."
You stopped weighing the butter, your heart skipping a beat.
"Yeah. I stayed the night here..."
Soojin clenched her jaw and you wondered if you should have lied instead. It looked like she didn't like your answer.
"You know, dad asked where you are and I told him you were in your room, working..."
Silence.
"I told him not to disturb you. You're obviously still moping because of what happened yesterday..."
You didn't know what to say. You knew you should be thanking her. Your father was strict. Jungkook was a friend, yes, but Taemin would go feral knowing that you were out here, doing God knows what with a boy when you should be in your own room, working and fixing your mistakes.
"I covered for you because I care about your feelings." She scoffed once again. "But it turns out you don't care about what I feel, huh?"
"Soojin..." You called. "What are you talking about?"
Why was she getting mad at you? You covered for her countless times! Meanwhile she only did the same for you once.
"I'm saying I like Jungkook, sister." She confessed, emphasizing the word 'sister.'
Your heart sank, face growing pale.
"Y-You like...Jungkook?" Saying this felt like a stab in your chest.
"I've been in love with him since we were sixteen. I tried telling him how I feel but I can't do it because of you." The way she said this made you feel like it was your fault.
"Me?" You blinked, shocked.
"Yes. You..." She inhaled deeply, like she was trying hard to stop herself from lashing out on you.
"You were always with him. I can't find the perfect opportunity to tell him the truth because I feel like you're preventing me!"
"Soojin..." You tried to reach for her hand but she swatted it away.
She was upset.
"I'm sorry..." You apologized. You honestly had no idea why you're saying sorry.
You guessed you felt bad.
She was right. You were always with Jungkook, always monopolizing his time that you didn't realize that you were hurting Soojin—preventing her happiness.
"I don't need your sorry. I need you to stay away from Jungkook for a while. Can you do that, huh? Will you let your sister confess first?" Just a few breaths ago, she was swatting your hand away, but now, she was taking it, gently stroking the back of your hand.
"Please? I'm not saying that you should stop being friends with him. I get it. You met him first. You were friends before I came into his life....but please, please give us time and space. I really, really like Jungkook..."
Soojin was looking at you as though she would die if you didn't say yes.
So yes.
You said "Yes. I won’t stop you from telling him how you feel..." just to make her happy.
Soojin's happiness mattered to you.
You could live without Jungkook for a while.
She couldn't. She had waited long enough.
It was her time to be with him.
You were allowing this.
You were allowing her to be happy with your best friend.
"Yay!" Soojin embraced you. "Thank you, sister!"
You smiled and hugged her back, reminding yourself that you made the right choice.
After all, it should always be family first, right?

I made the decision to watch all of the Case Files of Jeweler Richard in a day and I am ABSOLUTELY LOSING MY FUCKING MIND
(Technically I’ve watched up to episode 11 so I have 1 more episode left but am leaving it until tomorrow because it’s 1 AM right now- but I digress)
Spoilers for up to episode 10 of the anime, and apologies because I don’t know how to do read more on mobile so LONG POST:
Okay so FIRST OFF- On the cover this show isn’t explicit in that it has LGBTQ themes- it’s not labeled as such or with BL or Shounen Ai, the usual genre titles we see in anime. However, when I first tried to watch it a few months ago, within the opening minute I just knew (I just forgot to continue after that first minute until today). A lot of times with anime you can just tell things based on the art style or the dialogue, and if it doesn’t end up having those themes, then you get a situation like Balance: Unlimited where all of Twitter was tweeting “wait, it isn’t a BL???”
That being said, this series DOES have LGBTQ themes, one of the early side characters talks about how she doesn’t want to go through with her marriage because she realized she’s a lesbian or bisexual and is still in love with her old roommate. Another character expresses thoughts about romance and marriage in ways that I’m sure people who are asexual or a romantic can identify with. And this isn’t just with the side characters, oh no. The entire show is centered around the relationship of Richard and Seigi, and oh my god is it wild in how it is presented.
If you go on the wiki for this show, as my sister and I did, you’ll see a sentence along the lines of “Richard and Seigi frequently compliment each other’s beauty and say how much they like one another, to the point that everyone around them believes them to be in a relationship. However it’s unclear if their words are romantic or not.” And then if you go to their relationship page on the wiki, it just says Seigi is Richard’s boyfriend. So what’s the truth? (TLDR: the wiki is right. They’re definitely in love.)
Well the thing that had me rolling is that Seigi says he likes rich. A lot. Specifically throws around the “daisuki” line almost every episode. He says Richard is like a jewel, calls him beautiful and pretty. Richard picks him up in the rain after being dumped. They go alone to fancy restaurants for dinner almost every night. They flirt. It feels almost undeniable that what they’re saying is romantic, and that any kiss confirmation is unnecessary. There is a major plot line during all this though of Seigi trying to ask out his female college classmate however, and the result makes it sort of feel like Richard and Seigi are together but they’re in this open relationship with no labels so Richard just wants Seigi to have no regrets. The plot with the classmate really doesn’t do anything to their relationship. Richard and Seigi still are being as wild as ever.
And the reason I refer to this as being “wild” is partially because while watching my sister and I were riffing on the dialogue a little. For an anime, the show is very progressive in it’s ideas, Richard in episode 1 or 2 straight up calling Seigi out for something he said about a foreign customer and making him promise to not discriminate or judge anyone for their race, religion, sexual orientation, appearance, etc. (My sister literally joked “DONT BE RACIST” and then her jaw dropped when Richard said just that). There’s a multitude of moments in the first half of the show where Richard basically is just glaring at Seigi or telling him off later with a deadpanned expression for being xenophobic or just blunt about things that end up being rude to customers, and it’s because of how surprising it is that the show NEVER misses a moment to be like “YEAH ACTUALLY DON’T BE RUDE” that makes it hilarious. It feels almost unreal when everything you make a joke about happens two seconds afterwards.
Circling back to Richard and Seigi relationship though, early on I called on the idea that the show was going to have the trope of “he’s rich and from Europe so he’s illegitimate or something and he’s going to have to go back and Seigi will run after him in this big airport scene” and I basically got all that. Except that Richard and Seigi don’t meet up again until they’ve both been in England for a while and then we learn that Richard’s family are terrible people because a clause in their dead great grandfather’s inheritance made it so only Richard can inherit this 300 million pound Diamond but ONLY if he married a traditional English housewife. This clause is said to be VERY VERY strict in that it HAS to be an English housewife to the LETTER. And she must be TRADITIONAL. Of course, Richard is refusing to do this. So you’re watching them mess around in England for a bit, I got another cliche/trope I wanted when Seigi fell sick and Richard had to care for him in the hotel room, before the characters suddenly get a phone call and Richard’s cousin goes:
“Hey Seigi! Guess what? Turns out you qualify for the marriage clause! Despite being Asian, the will and the law consider a homosexual civil partnership equivalent to a heterosexual marriage, so you can be with Richard and then he get’s the Diamond! So I’ll see you at the safe where the Diamond will be at!”
(I’m paraphrasing the words obviously but the part about civil partnership was what I specifically remember being said, but forgive me for any errors, as my jaw was on the floor when the show threw that curveball at me).
In case you’re confused, I’m not saying this is bad at all. I’m just saying when watching this show, it feels UNBELIEVABLY HILARIOUS the way these things literally get thrown at the audience. Stuff you would never expect in an anime just punch you in the face repeatedly and I was so shocked from this “viable marriage candidate” twist that I did SENSE was coming (but thought of it more of as a joke, BECAUSE HOW THE HECK DID HE FIT THE CLAUSE OF A TRADITIONAL ENGLISH HOUSEWIFE) I had to pause the episode and rush to spit out the water I just drank before I choked. And if this wasn’t enough to kill me, we learn later on, that the reason this whole crazy clause happened in this dead man’s will was because he wanted to get back at the rest of Richard’s family because the man’s son was marrying a woman from Sri Lanka and LITERALLY SAID “THE WHITE SUPERMACISTS” WOULD HARASS HER so all of this chaos was to give the fortune to their side of the family and piss off the racists. I just cannot believe I’m hearing and seeing all this in a Japanese anime. There was even discussion of how Japan’s traditional gender roles restrict women, and it’s just like HOW IS THIS SHOW SO PROGRESSIVE??? It literally feels like I’m watching a paradox and it’s sad because it shouldn’t but it’s hilarious and enjoyable all the same.
Once again, and sort of a TLDR, The Case Files of Jeweler Richard is an incredible show. It’s an unintentionally hilarious ride that isn’t baiting because it feels like it’s definitely presenting Richard and Seigi’s relationship as romantic coded without needing a kiss or anything. It’s strangely progressive and open minded for Japanese media, seems meta at times, and has left me stunned in ten out of twelves episodes thus far that I’m so sad I didn’t watch it week to week to see the reactions of the fans live. I highly recommend this series if you’re looking for something to just get you to laugh or just a fun story involving two male leads with great chemistry.
Now, here’s a representation of me watching this show:

💭 What is a headcanon you have about your own work?
this is one of those questions where I'm like, but what does it mean? I guess something about the background worldbuilding that was never explicitly stated in the story itself? Backbone has a lot of that -- I did a lot of base worldbuilding for the Rylothean Twi'lek culture that I made the conscious decision not to put into Backbone, though some of it is hinted at here and there. The two big ones, which are connected, are marriage/concubinage customs and inheritance law.
Rylothean Twi'leks are not expected to be monogamous and it's fairly common to have group marriages of various combinations. (I think Alecto's parents was one husband with two wives, but I'm not certain.) Especially among the curiate caste, but throughout the patrician castes, it's also extremely common to only have one, or sometimes two, legal marriages (I think I explicitly used the term cum manu in Backbone, but can't be certain; it's a Roman legal term for a certain type of marriage) but to have one or more semi/permanent legal relationships which we'd probably call concubinage today. These are legal relationships of a different status than marriage; the children of a concubinal relationship are not illegitimate, but they're a different form of legitimate than the child of a legal marriage. (This is something that actually comes up in the first chapter of Devil's Lair, the Backbone sequel.) Illegitimate children -- which in this sense means that legally they do not have two (or more) parents -- take their social/legal caste from their mother; neither Doriah Syndulla nor Ojeda Syndulla have acknowledged fathers, but Doriah's mother is a plebeian and Ojeda's mother is a curiate, so Doriah is a plebeian and Ojeda is a curiate. There is no social stigma for not having two parents, however a child can only be legitimized if both parents are still alive; Doriah can't be legitimized because his mother is dead. (So is Ojeda's, but because she is already a curiate, it isn't an issue; it's mostly an issue in cases of inheritance dispute and/or when the parents are of different castes and/or different clans.) It is suuuuuper common and socially accepted, if one spouse is of a higher caste and takes a spouse/concubine in the legal sense, to also take their siblings as lovers, whether as legal concubines or as casual lovers; after Cham married Alecto he also slept with her sister Clotho. Both sisters were fine with it, it was fairly common knowledge; the only issue is that he never legally acknowledged Doriah as his son and now because Clotho is dead, Doriah cannot be legitimized (assuming that Cham is his father or wanted to legitimize or acknowledge him; they're legally not the same thing). He could however be legally acknowledged, however Cham won't do this because that could have potential repercussions on Hera's ability to inherit (despite the fact that Hera does not want to inherit).
None of this is explicitly stated in Backbone, even though most of that was in the base worldbuilding from the beginning, for the very simple reason of: I got and still get so much shit about the social mores and morality of the OT3 in Gambit. I did not want to deal with that in Backbone even if none of that was going to be on the page (because Clotho is dead); I didn't want to give any of my readers an excuse to say "Cham and Alecto were never in love" by saying that Cham slept with Clotho or that he slept with other people in the ten years between the opening flashback and the present day. For the record, because this is a ~headcanon post, Cham and Alecto both had lovers in those ten years, Cham more than Alecto, but nothing serious. There was at one point going to be a scene where Alecto commented on it; I cut it because I didn't want the emotional arc to get derailed by a potential audience reaction of "they're both cheaters." If it's not clear, the reaction I got to the OT3 in Gambit scared the hell out of me. (And I've been in fandom for twenty years, it takes a lot to do that.) I don't think it's a coincidence that the main relationships in Backbone are all on-the-surface-straightforward m/f relationships, though I wasn't thinking that way about it at the time.
I was (I mean, am) going to deal with all of this in Devil's Lair, because I figured no one would read Lair without having first read Backbone, and being able to work all of that out on the page without having it tied up in Cham and Alecto's marriage is a safer way to do it. Here's a Cham POV snippet from Lair 1 about some of those technicalities:
More gently, Cham went on, “I was sorry to hear about your brother and stepmother.”
Khaaja waved that aside. “Half-brother. And she was not my stepmother; my mother was my father’s concubine, not his wife. You know that,” she added, scowling. “Or at least you used to.”
“Things might have changed since I’ve been gone,” Cham admitted. Lon Secura, like many curiates both male and female, had had a succession of concubines over the years as well as a legal spouse of his own caste. Khaaja had been his oldest born child, but until a few years ago the Secura prime heir had been his only surviving legitimate offspring, a boy about Hera’s age whose name Cham couldn’t recall. Rumor slowly carried to the fleet had told Cham that a slaver attack on one of the Secura estates had cost Lon both his wife and his heir, along with most of the inhabitants of that estate. He had finally designated Khaaja as his heir only recently, admitting that his son was gone for good. Cham had been in that situation himself recently enough that even thinking about it made him wince.
Khaaja snorted softly. “My father legitimized me, but he didn’t marry my mother to do it. Not that that’s going to matter,” she added pointedly, “since once the Empire hears about this we’ll lose our lands, our fortune, our position in the Curia, and probably all our lives along with it.”
“The Empire won’t hear of this,” Cham repeated firmly.

Ch.11
"Why am I really here mom?" You ask still with your eyes closed. "Why don't you tell me… I know you don't want to go back." She says calmly. You can only sigh. "It's all going to hell, the team. I love them all, but they are tearing each other apart." She chuckles. You open your eyes and just look at her. "Well then why are you here with me instead of stopping them from tearing each other apart?" She teases. You change the subject. She lets you though. "My… dad? Did you love him?" You are not sure if you wanted the answer, but you asked anyway.. "Did I love him… tough question monkey." She contemplates for a while. "He was childish, and not in a cute way, at least not looking back… I used to love that about him." She looks back at you, her eyes connecting with yours. "He changed though… when we found out I was pregnant. We were scared and young… but he cared. More than I'd ever seen him care for anything else."
You can't help but tear up at her memories. Then the anger builds in yourself. "Then why didn't he fight for me?" Your sentence dwindles into a whisper. "Who told you he didn't… or that he hasn't?" Her words shut you up right away. She laughs at your confusion. "I'm assuming you're not telling me who he is?" She nods in agreement "It's not my place to tell you." Then again you ask another question. "Did he love me?" She looks down to you and smiles. "Oh… from the moment he first held you. You made the most peculiar sounds… and your tiny hands would grip our fingers" She sighs. "I wish I had more time with you then. I tried really hard… to stay awake." She clears her throat. "But I couldn't fight anymore… But you have to." You sit up looking at her. "I don't want to leave you alone." She shakes her head. "I'm never alone…" now it's your turn to shake your head. "Living your life vicariously through mine does not count." She laughs.
"I met Dave and Vivian" she mentions solemnly. You almost choke on your own breath at their mention. "They're here?" She nods enthusiastically. "They'll hear about this… one day you'll talk to them again." You groan. "Tell Dave… tell him that I'm sorry. Viv tell her that I'm taking care of all her sisters… all 5 of them." You chuckle. "Just tell them that I miss them…" She nods holding your hand. "God… you were supposed to make it easier to leave, not harder."
Tony sits at your bedside. "Why aren't you waking up?" He sighs. They've tried virtually everything and time was running out. "You can't leave me you can't just waltz back into my life and die on me." He pleads with anyone who would listen. "You need to know that I'm your dad… you need to know that I'm your dad." He speaks into your hand. Your eyes wide open now. Having heard everything you instinctively pull your hand away. Soon you realize you can't breathe comfortably. It was an all around traumatic experience, tears soon started falling. Tony's initial shock prevents him from vocalizing your state. It isn't until Wanda walks in that she calls for a doctor. Tony stands in a corner watching you struggle with the doctors.
Soon the tubes are no longer preventing you from vocalizing your thoughts; you take advantage rather quickly. "Leave" is all you can say with your voice hoarse and devoid of any emotion. The only thing giving you away were the tears. "Y/n you need to hear me out…" you interrupt him. "I don't need to do anything… LEAVE." You grit out wincing in pain as the words leave your throat. Soon your vitals begin to increase at any alarming rate. Doctor's burst in again, ushering Tony out and sedating you. As soon as he walks out he is met by everyone's expectant gaze. "What happened?" Steve is the first one to speak up. "She found out… more like I told her right as she was waking up." Tony rubs his temples.
When you wake up someone is in the room you can tell. It's almost like you can feel them, without even opening your eyes you call out her name. "Nat?" You hear her walk towards you. You clear your throat. "He's- he's…" is all that comes out and she nods but doesn't say anything. That's when it all clicks. She wasn't looking at you… she was quiet, you only needed to look at her posture and you knew. You laugh. "You knew… didn't you?" Her eyes widened in surprise giving her away, except that it wasn't just her. "Oh… god you're all liars. You all played me. Im so stupid." Your laugh continues; it was cynical with tears rolling down your cheeks. "You're all hypocrites… You sit on your pedestal and preach trust and honesty…" You don't finish the sentiment. Sitting up and pulling at all the wires attached to your body. She reaches out for your hands but as soon as her hands land on your, you recoil at her touch. "Stay the hell away from me Natasha!"
You walk out the room leaving her behind using the wall to help you walk. You made it out to the waiting room and it just broke your heart even more. Their eyes on you, the pity radiating off them. Pietro can't even meet your gaze, much less Wanda. Steve took a cautious step forward, and when you didn’t step back he continued. As soon as he reached you he embraced you, everything came crashing down. The truth would have never hurt so much, and you still didn't know the whole story. You take this opportunity and ask Steve to take you to your room. He did as you asked the whole way there was silent until you made it to your room and he closed the door. “Y/n I’m so sorry…” you cut him off. “No you aren't.”  you mutter quietly. It takes him by surprise and you take advantage of it. “You need to find him… you need to leave before you don't have the chance to anymore.” He can help but ask why. “Why are you helping me?” You turn to him, your eyes filled with unspoken words. “Because I care for all of you too much to stand by and watch you destroy each other. Leave now!”
“I need to take Wanda and Pietro.” He states and you nod. “I’ll send Clint for them later.” You can't help but to turn in awe of his statement. “Steve you can’t… you can't do that to his family.” You see the guilt in his eyes. “Tony has the government on his side.” Is all he says before he turns and walks toward the door. “Take care Y/n''. Before you know it you’re alone again with nothing, but your thoughts. Soon enough Vision comes phasing through a wall. “I thought you and Wanda talked about this.” You joke wiping your tears away. “Yes, well I thought you might appreciate the company.” He motions to your bed and you nod. He takes the liberty and sits down. “Y/n, I can't lie and tell you that I know what you feel. I comprehend many things, but emotions are the one thing I can't quite figure out.” He states matter of factly. “You played a crucial part in making me whatever it is I am, but what I'm meant to be is what you would say up in the air.” He mentions moving his hands.
“Vision you’re a highly intelligent being with access to all the knowledge you could ever need. I was a kid… a sick kid. His kid.” You state quietly. “I met my mom.” you speak up again. He looks at you trying to decipher what you meant. Your hands motion to your head. “Vision I think that I’m going crazy.” The words barely a whisper as they leave your mouth. “Y/n there are many things that we can't explain… You said this helped you in Vienna. Maybe it’s best not to question it now.” His eyes search for yours, and you nod. “We’ll be a pair of unexplainable beings.” you laugh lightly. Tony not so graciously bursts in as you're about to say something, Vision stands and nods at your direction, you let him go and Tony walks in. “I know that you're angry, and disappointed, and that you probably hate me… but I don't want you to hate me.”
“Yes, well you should’ve thought about that before you casually forgot to mention that You were my father for half a year. And that's assuming you just found out Tony. When did you find out?” He’s quiet at your question, which in turn answers your question. “How long did you know… how long did they all know?” You look at him shift in his place trying to regain himself, so you let him. “Not long after Sokovia… And I-i had my suspicions before that actually.” He states standing straight and looking into your eyes for any sign of emotions. “The team didn't find out until you had your first episode.” You could tell that he didn't want you to hate them too… Little did he know that that wasn't an option because you cared for them too much. “Is Maya Hansen my mother?” You ask taking him by surprise. “I-I um yeah she was your mother.” He says scratching at the back of his neck.
“Right, well I’ll be staying here for the time being. If that's okay with you of course.” Staying gave him hope and you knew that. Now you were lying to him using it as a weakness, all to help Steve. “Yeah, Of Course I can set you up with a more permanent living situation.” He says the excitement dripping in every word. You can only nod. “Hey.” You say as he’s about to walk out. He turns to face you. “She’s okay… and she doesn't hate you.” At first he didn't understand what you meant until he remembered what you said after your first episode. Right as he was about to say something you cut him off. “And for that matter… I don't hate you either.” You state quietly. “I’m hurt… I just need a little time.” He nods the light back in his eyes. “Can you tell the twins that I want to talk to them?” He nods and finally walks out of the room.
Although your words were true you couldn't help but feel guilty. Lying was something that you were not fond of, but neither Steve nor him will take a step back and think about what's best. If someone didn't step in they would kill each other… and whoever it is that comes out on top will never be the same. You couldn't let that happen so if that meant tearing them apart before they got the chance to kill themselves it’s a sacrifice you were willing to make. Then you heard a faint knock on your door and you knew who it was. “Come in it’s open” You say loud enough for them to hear. They walk in and they are a mess just spewing out words out of their mouths… and Pietro seems to be speed apologizing and you can't help but laugh. “We’re not talking about that right now you two… so you can stop doing that.” You say flatly looking at Pietro whose words were now actually comprehensible. “I’m assuming that neither of you have changed your minds on the accords?” You ask, raising your brows. Pietro nods in agreement, but Wanda's silence and lack of reaction are somehow louder.
“Wanda you want to share with the group?” You say confused giving Pietro a look and he just shrugs. “Wanda, you know that we cant sign those papers right.” Pietro asks. She shakes her head . “I’ve hurt people Pietro, maybe this is for the best.” You scoff. “Everyone in this compound has hurt people… Including me.” You turn to Pietro. “She has day two tops before Steve comes for you.” You say emphasizing the ‘you’ at the end. “I just don't want you to feel like you don't have an option, but Wanda you have no Idea what you're signing up for if you sign the accords” She nods. “That's what I wanted to tell you.” You nod and Pietro gives you a small smile. “Why are you doing this Y/n going against your father.” Hearing her say that sparks something within you guilt, anger, sadness. “Because neither of them are going to win, they are too blind to see that we’ve already lost what we value most... Each other.” Both twins are surprised by your honesty. “I’m just trying to preserve what's left.” She nods. “You signed the accords.” She mentions sadly. You nod, taking her hand in yours. “I don't have superhuman abilities, that can be used for bad.” Now you take Pietro's hand as well. “I will do my best to keep you safe. Tony might be my father, but he’s wrong. Take care of each other.”
“This sounds an awful lot like a goodbye.” Pietro quips sadly, you nod. “That's because it might be for a while. We have to keep this charade going till Clint comes for you both. Vision won't let you go without a fight.” You say. “To our luck we have something on your side.” You say smiling pointing at your chest. “I’m going to miss you both.” You smile and pull them both into a hug. They walk out. It's not long after that you hear steps outside your door but they never come in. So you sleep it off. Days passed and you haven't heard from Steve and you were starting to worry.
Then you walk into a busy bustling conference center Tony looks stressed. He looks up at you and he seems to take a breath. “Y/n are you okay?” He asks worriedly. “Some pain here and there, but I don't think it’s anything serious.” You state. “Where are you going and would you mind if I came?” You asked, he sets his phone down and gives you a look. “You um… You would like to come with me?” You take a seat next to him. “They captured Barnes and Rogers… along with his ragtag friend Wilson. We’re going to Berlin. Pack a bag we leave in 30.” You nod. “Where's Pepper I haven't seen her around?” He nods. “Well, um we’re taking a break. I told her I would walk away from all of this, but I can’t. This is me, not to say it's her fault it’s not.” You nod and give his hand an assuring squeeze. “She loves you, just let her know you love her too.” You say as you walk away.
The flight to Germany was rough… not only were you still tired from the surgery, but it was tense. Natasha and Tony were walking on eggshells around each other. And it seems that she is keeping her distance from you. You try to relax and sleep a little but much like your flight to New York nightmares plagued your subconscious. When you wake up you don't miss the looks that Tony and Natasha give each other. Then you remembered your mothers words, you closed your eyes again and tried to relax completely just when you were about to give up and you heard her voice. “This is where you use the gift that I gave you a while ago, look for the perfect opportunity.” Then it happens again  "Zhelanie, rzhavyy, Semndtsat', Rassvet, Pech', Devgat', Dobro Serdechny, Vozvrashcheniye na rodinu, Odin', Gruzovoy Vagon." Those words. Followed by “Now is the time.” When you wake up Tony is now sitting next to you holding your hand. He goes to apologize, but you stop him and thank him, giving his hand a gentle squeeze.
After the plane landing Tony explains that he wants to talk to Steve alone you agree and take a step back. You follow Natasha to an empty surveillance room. “I want to apologize for the way I reacted when I found out.” You say when you sit down. “It was not fair for me to take out all of my anger on you.” You continue and you can tell that you fazed her, she was expecting the worst case scenario with you. So it’s not an understatement when she says that she was speechless. “I understand if you don't want to forgive me, or If you need time…” This is the part you weren't expecting. She lunges towards you and kisses you, her lips on yours and you freeze at the feeling. She pulls away hastily turning her back on you. You don't hesitate this time you pull on her arm back to where she was standing... and kiss her back this time your lips moving in perfect synchrony. It would be an understatement if you said that the kiss was quite literally magical.
“I’ve been waiting a long time to do that.” You confess your forehead resting on hers. "And why didn't you?" She asks teasingly. "Well I was kind of waiting for that second date. I kinda have a rule." You say chuckling. In this moment you couldn't have been more happy. And there it is again that voice. "Natasha, Something is very wrong." Quite literally mirroring the incident in Vienna. When suddenly sirens are going off all around you. Your eyes meet Natasha's gaze… afraid of her reaction. "You have to tell me how you do that." She quipped making you laugh. Then you see The world renowned Winter Soldier in attack mode. Nat leaves you in the room going to fight the assassin that is endangering your lives. Almost as if it were instinct you hack into the intercom system and repeat the words that were seared into your memories. "Zhelanie, rzhavyy, Semndtsat', Rassvet, Pech', Devgat', Dobro Serdechny, Vozvrashcheniye na rodinu, Odin', Gruzovoy Vagon." You don't even have time to understand how it came out in perfect tongue. "Soldati."
 You watch him loosen his hold on Natasha. The breath you've been holding is finally being let out. You see him mouth the phrase. "Ya gotov otvechat" Suddenly Steve and Sam are there and then the rest is a blur. You feel your eyes roll back and the muffled sounds of steps running frantically. When you wake up her eyes greet you, she was worried you could tell. Your eyes wonder her figure, and then her neck. The marks of his hands taking their toll on her. “Are you okay? What happened back there” She asks. “Sorry…” All you can mumble out your eyes pinned on the marks on her neck. She seemed to notice. She took your face in her hands forcing your eyes to meet hers. “It’s okay I’m okay” Is all she needs to say and you nod, leaning forward, and placing a chaste kiss on her cheek. “I should’ve done something sooner.” Finally taking a look around you don't quite realize where you are. Nat seems to notice. “We’re at the compound… My room.” She mentions shyly. “How long have I been out?” She sighs. “A while, a couple of hours.”  You nod apprehensively. “What happened after I blacked out?” You ask trying to remember what occurred in those hours.
“Well after your little speech on the intercom… he shut down. Whispered something along the line of ‘Ready to Comply’ then Steve and Sam took him from there.” You nod in relief visibly relaxing. Nat gives you a look. “I know what you’re thinking and it's not like that.” You state standing up. “My head tells me things… my mom tells me things. And I know that sounds fucking cynical but I'm telling you its true.” Nat tenses again her rigid exterior on again. “You said that last time.” She states bluntly. You nod slightly hurt at the fact that she doesn’t believe you. “Last I recall it also saved you last time.” She sighs but ultimately nods. “What side are you on? Because I’m having trouble believing that you are on my side.” She asks cautiously “That's because I didn't take a side Natasha, you knew how I felt about the accords from the beginning.” She’s quiet and you continue. “I’m trying to keep everyone from drowning” you take a deep breath. “I’m a pacifist Nat, and I don't want to fight with you… or anyone for that matter.”
 She nods “Y/n, I have to go, can I trust you to make sure nothing goes wrong here.” You smirk at that. “D’you want me to lie to you?” You can see the amused look in her eyes. “No, we wouldn't want that now would we?” You shake your head in denial. “Well, in that case…” She cuts you off with another kiss. “We’re okay… regardless of what happens outside of that door. We can come back to each other right?” The last part was more a silent plea… to which you happily gave in. “I’ll be waiting for you.” She smiles genuinely and it’s truly a sight to behold, you feel  honored to be the reason that she's smiling. “I’ll see you later then.” She states as she walks out of the room and you nod. As Steve had mentioned Clint showed up later that night. You didn’t have much to do with that by the time you’d made it down stairs. They were long gone. You could almost say the same for Vision, there was something about him now. “Are you okay?” Is the first thing that comes out your mouth. “Do you have reasons to suggest otherwise?” You shake your head. “I take it they left.”
 When you finally left the compound… It felt great. Stepping away for just a minute was just what you needed. Unfortunately for you It wasn't long till you were dragged back in. It couldn’t have been three hours by when there was a knock at your door. The person standing on the other side did surprise you however. Pepper, it was her but something was different… She seemed sad. “Pepper, It’s nice to see you, what do you need?” You say while opening your door and moving to let her pass. “You need to help them…” It's all she says and you understand. “I’m trying Pepper, but they are too stubborn for their own good.” She nods. “How is he?” You take a deep breath. “He’s going stir crazy, but he's otherwise fine.” You state. “He does miss you.” She shifts her gaze, not completely comfortable. “He’s going to need you… I’ve had to do things that will hurt him. It’s going to hurt more when he finds out his daughter was working against him.” Now this made her look back at you, concern in her eyes. “He-he told you?” You nod and squeeze her hand. “I know where they are at...” It’s all that Pepper blurts out.

ASOOT Timeline: September 2012 (Severe Storm Warning)
It’s been a while, hasn’t it? I took a break for a few weeks, but I’m back now, so let’s just jump right into it.–Timeline Anon
September 29:
Just past 12:30 AM, Chiaki sneaks out of her room and heads for the basement. On the way there, she sees Yuki and Kana trying to convince an inebriated Kizuna to go to bed, but Kizuna doesn’t want to go back to her room alone, so Yuki and Kana accompany her there. Chiaki makes it to the basement, uses the combination Kana gave her, and finds a bloody chamber with many tools of torture inside. She gets lots of footage of it via her contacts, and although she nearly gets caught by a person in a black bodysuit who comes to get pliers, she escapes the chamber undetected and goes back to her room to tell Hajime about what she found.
When morning comes, Chiaki and Hajime pull Kana aside and tell her that they know what’s in the basement. Kana says that Maverick tortures and sometimes even kills people who don’t respond to his manipulations. This includes the managers themselves; apparently, Yuki’s back is covered in scars, and he needs to take painkillers just to sit down. Kana performs Dogeza and begs Chiaki and Hajime for their help. They tell her about their plan to take control of the docks and save everyone, she gives them a master key to the dock’s control room so that they can radio their friends, and they agree to meet up and go to the docks around 8 PM.
Yuki and Kizuna are growing closer.
Chiaki, who has seen scars on Kana’s back, tells Hajime that she wants to believe in Kana. Hajime does too, but he’s keeping his guard up just in case.
The Quantum Crew home team is furious about the recent revelations and wants to kick Maverick’s ass (aside from Kyoji, who still has misgivings). Monica’s knockout gas drones are ready, and Setsuka has secured two boats for the group to use. The plan is to send a group on the smaller boat (named the S.S. Saionji) to help take the docks and disable the radio jammers before calling in another group on the larger boat (the S.S. Koizumi) to kick off the island invasion. They’ll leave at 6:30 PM.
At 5:50 PM, Kana visits Chiaki and Hajime in their room as they get ready for the mission to the docks. She asks them if everyone can still stay on the island after Maverick’s been defeated, as she doesn’t feel like she has anywhere else to go, but Chiaki assures her that she’s not alone; after all, she has her mother, who she loves dearly. Kana admits that she wants to see her mother again.
Sonia, Hibiki, Akane, Sora, and Taira will be the landing party aboard the S.S. Saionji, and Taira will swim out ahead of the boat to secure the areas around the island. Nikei, Maku, Kyoji, Monaca, Setsuka, Hiyoko, and Nekomaru will come in on the S.S. Koizumi once they get the go-ahead. Yoruko and Mikan will be waiting on the mainland to call 119 when everyone gets back, Emma and Iroha will keep an eye on Kanade, and Umeko will continue to maintain communications. Fuyuhiko couldn’t make it today, which concerns Nekomaru, as he saw him as part of the invasion team in Mikako’s vision. Nikei and Taira share a kiss. The S.S. Saionji and its crew leaves for the island at 6 on the dot.
8 PM arrives, and Kana escorts Hajime and Chiaki to the docks (she twice offers to go by herself, but Chiaki insists that they stick together). Once there, Hajime uses a radio to contact the S.S. Saionji, which is only a few minutes away from the island. He then admits that he’s suspicious of Kana’s loyalties for several reasons: the basement door wasn’t armored or reinforced at all, Yuki was sitting normally at dinner despite supposedly being tortured too hard to sit without painkillers, and Kana seems to have a strange fixation on Chiaki. Also, her scars are fake. Kana has led them into a trap, and so Storm’s guards uncloak themselves, hold Chiaki and Hajime at gunpoint, and fire upon the approaching S.S. Saionji. The boat gets away, but Taira (who jumped into the water shortly before the trap was sprung) is left behind.
Hajime and Chiaki are marched back to the hotel and taunted by Maverick, who reveals that the torture chamber was fake and that he set up the whole thing as a “game” to see how far they’d go to be heroes. He knows that they’re working with Kasugano. He claims that Kasugano is about power and doesn’t actually help anyone who needs it, that the people on the island are happy there and shouldn’t be sent back to their old terrible lives, and that Chiaki has hurt Kana without even knowing it. Hajime and Chiaki are now essentially prisoners, although they are allowed to do whatever they want on the island as long as they don’t cause trouble.
Chiaki goes to the hotel lobby to talk to Kana and ask her for answers. Kana reveals that her biological father is Chiaki’s father, making the two girls half-sisters, and Kana resents it because of the suffering she and her mother went through as a result of her status as an illegitimate child. However, she admits that she doesn’t hate Chiaki like she thought she would. Chiaki doesn’t hate Kana either and, in fact, still wants to save her. When Kana says that her life doesn’t matter, Chiaki decides to help her see that it does.
Taira hides in the forest surrounding the hotel. She must lay low for now because of the guards, so she spends the night in a tree.
The crew of the S.S. Akane returns to Tokyo and tells everyone else what happened. Just then, Maverick sends out a radio broadcast to the entire country in which he gives an ultimatum: either Kasugano reveals himself and dies before 9 AM on October 2, or everyone on the island will be killed one by one. The Quantum Crew is devastated and terrified for their friends.
After Kana tells Maverick that she can’t hate Chiaki because she’s kind to her, Maverick hits her, tells her that she’s nothing, and claims that people would only be kind to her in order to use her.
It’s Koichi’s birthday. He turns 28.
//Good to have you back ^^

Who Said Love Was Easy? (2/12)
Tumblr media
      There are many different kinds of people who come and go from your life. Some will stay constant and sturdy like a river, growing alongside you, others will come like a whirlwind who wreaks havoc and leaves just as quickly, then there is everything in between. In this twisted maze of connections, that is where our story begins. A steadfast boy, a girl with a past, a little bit of alcohol, mistakes, and some love. Where can you go wrong with that?
angsty fluff
w.c: 1.7k
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
      I’ve been spending more and more time at the pub, partly because I was still trying to coax the weary Jeongin into friendship but also Jaehyung has been inviting me to come over more, his nosy-neighbor-senses kicking in. I’ve nearly broken Jeongin though cause he’s warmed up sufficiently since running into him. Gahyeon on the other hand seems to be cautious around me but as the saying goes “keep your friends close and your enemies closer.” It wasn’t like she was any bad, if anything I could see why Jeongin was so infatuated with her. She gives off girl-next-door vibes minus the naivety. Like Jeongin, she brought in a lot of customers with that personality but as the only female server a lot of guys come through in hopes to be served by her. That meant Jeongin’s eyes were constantly on her, ready to step in at any given moment.
“It’ll be faster if you just start barking at people. Then everyone would think you’re crazy and people won’t pay attention to her. Are you trying to burn holes into her skull?”
“Can you not for one day y/n?” he rolled his eyes.
“I’ll stop if you stop first,” I wink before adding, “If anyone so much as looked at her the wrong way Chan, Younghyun, and Jaehyung would be there in seconds you know.”
“There’s just been a lot more creeps lately and it’s been really packed.”
“It can’t be helped. It’s summer vacation for college students so everyone’s going out to de-stress from exams. Why so overprotective anyways?”
“She got bullied in high school. She’s the type to say what she wants so a lot of the girls didn’t like her and a lot of the guys bad mouthed her because she rejected them bluntly.”
“Oh? she looks so pleasant I would’ve taken her as a pushover.”
“Wait why am I even telling you this?” He blinked a few times at the realization.
“Because we’re good friends obviously,” I leaned forward with a smile.
“Whatever, I’m telling the hyungs you dropped the honorifics.”
“No you aren’t.”
      There was a call from the kitchen and he briskly walked away. I shrugged it off since he was still working after all but as I watched his figure disappear into the kitchen, the next thing I knew Jaehyung bursted from the door and stormed over. My mouth fell agape at Jeongin who was watching me from the kitchen door snickering to himself. Snitch.
“l/n y/n!”
“Jaehyung-oppa listen-”
      Safe to say I was thoroughly lectured but it was worth it to know I made him smile… albeit because of my sorrow but minor details. Jaehyung asked to go home together again so I sat quietly in my corner seat as they had a store meeting. Watching them interact, now and throughout my time here, their dynamic was really something. Jaehyung and Younghyun act like they hate each other and are at each other’s throats yet they match each other’s energy to work perfectly together, Chan is like the middle child who acts like the youngest but will step up when needed, Jimin always butts heads with everyone but she still makes sure everyone is cared for, and lastly there are the two newest members Jeongin and Gahyeon… long term friends from school with the same sunshine type energy that every one of the older employees love to dote on like some dysfunctional… family…
      Allowing my mind to fill itself with thoughts of Jeongin recently, I nearly forgot what time of year it was. Almost. My thoughts betrayed me and not wanting to make Jaehyung’s worrying/nagging worse I stepped out into the summer night. First it was just the loneliness setting in but it's different now with certain annoyances making an appearance last year. It’s like they’re watching and waiting… haunting me to make sure I can’t be happy for the rest of my life. All because of something I had no control over. As I tried to collect myself before I went down the family trauma rabbit hole, I received a text notification and rolled my eyes at the message. A strong urge to throw my phone came over me as my vision blurred red for a second and felt my arm raise for a moment, phone in hand, before a voice brought me back to my senses.
“Regardless of whatever you saw on there, I would advise you not to break your phone unless you can afford a new one.”
      Of all the people, he was not the one I pegged as someone who would’ve followed me out here. My brain was racing to pull itself together, still spiralling from the earlier train of thought, that my response exposed how confused I was.
“Jeongin? What are you doing out here? Aren’t you guys having a meeting?”
“Yeah but hyung keeps looking to make sure you don’t leave so I decided to take one for the team and tell you to come back in so he can focus.”
“And here I thought you came out for me,” I joke as my arm falls back to my side, my snarky smartass persona finally loading up again.
“Whatever makes you happy,” he rolls his eyes before asking, “Is something going on though? You almost threw your phone and hyung usually isn’t this antsy with you.”
      He noticed? I couldn’t help the small surge of happiness that shot through me but of all the things why did he have to notice this? As tense as I was at his observation, I threw on my usual smile and did what I did best.
“Awww so we really are friends, you care,” I tease and he glared back at me. “Everything’s fine, really. Jaehyung-oppa thinks I get kinda weird around this time of year cause something happened last year. He’ll be back to normal by next week.”
“... okay. Are you gonna stay out here? We’re basically done anyways,” he responded as he glanced at the group inside before eyeing me suspiciously.
“Yeah, let him know please. Also let him know to stop being a worrywart.”
“Tell him that yourself.”
      With a huff he walked back in and I was finally able to relax. Leaning against the window with a sigh, I wished it was winter so I could watch the smoke curl from my lips into the air. It’s oddly calming to watch it disappear and to feel the chill set in my bones. Instead I’m left with the stifling heat of summer and the slightly unsettling thought that Jeongin possibly saw through the act… I’m such a mess. I want him to pay attention to me and now that he has I’m getting antsy. Well this is the only exception I guess, Jaehyung only knows cause he saw it happen. If I had it my way no one would know. Once in the safety of my four walls, I fell into my bed with a groan. Today kinda sucked but I knew it would only get worse until that day comes. Looking at my desk in the corner of the living room with unfinished work strewn across its surface, I let out a sigh. Might as well work to get my mind off it.
      Ding. Ding. Ding. Drowsily raising my head from my desk, I rubbed my eyes in annoyance. The sun was up and Jaehyung knew my door code so who is being so irritating this early? Looking at the intercom monitor, I should’ve known it would be one of those vermin. With a groan I went to “greet” my half-sister, clad in her expensive private school uniform, as I glared and leaned against the door frame.
“To what do I owe the honor of a visit from the princess herself?”
“You weren’t answering mom’s messages and she wanted to make sure you’d be coming home for dinner this weekend.”
“Let me guess. Grandma is invited so I have to show up to make you people look good? Not interested so leave.”
“Don’t act so high and mighty. If you didn’t want to be a part of this family you shouldn’t have-”
“Get it right,” I sneered. “Your mother kicked me out for being a reminder of her husband’s infidelity and was forced to sign away my rights to the family and shares left to me in dad’s will just so I could get the money he left me for college. I’m sorry I actually care to visit dad besides his death anniversary and happen to run into grandma, nothing changes the fact that I’m the illegitimate child right? So run along before you’re late.”
      She stamped her foot and huffed at my indifferent face and challenging tone before turning on her heel and stomping to the elevator. I tiredly rubbed my face before running a frustrated hand through my hair. I did not need this first thing in the morning. Back inside my apartment, I grabbed my phone and called my best friend.
“To what do I owe the pleasure of this early morning wakeup call?” He groaned in annoyance. We both weren’t morning people.
“How early can we hang out?”
“Depends. On a scale of “I miss you” to “I want to pull my hair out,” how bad is it?”
“Younghee blew up my doorbell at seven in the morning to tell me to have dinner with them.”
“Oof. I’m shadowing my dad today but tomorrow night for sure, okay? I promise we’ll have fun and you can forget about them. ”
“Our handsome Changbinie is so great~ This is why you’re my best friend.”
“Shut up, I’m still two years older and I’m your only friend y/n.”
“No, I have Jaehyung-oppa and the others from the pub!”
“How can you be friends with someone who doesn’t like your best friend? I didn’t even do anything to Jaehyung-hyung to be hated like this.”
“I don’t like you and you are my best friend.”
“I- Nope, you love me by default because I’m the only one who knows all your secrets,” he countered.
“Who said you’re the only one?”
“Lover boy doesn’t count. He was drunk and probably doesn’t remember plus it’s not like you’ll see him again.”
“Wrong. I can since I have~”
“Young master, President Seo says you must get ready.”
“That’s me,” he groans, “you better catch me up! Maybe your life won’t be a revenge drama afterall," he gasped teasingly. "Is it a romantic comedy?”
“Shut up, does that make you the second lead dearest best friend?” He faked a gag and I chuckled, “I’ll see you tomorrow.”
So in a fit of brilliance I’ve decided the two posts tagged ‘coffee date au’ are set in the same universe where Lan Xichen and Nie Mingjue agree to go on a date (they’re college buddies) but then suddenly they both show up slightly panicked and with a kid each (LXC doesn’t have a mom, and their dad is really agoraphobic since she died, and uncle is teaching a class rn, but NMJ still can’t convince his dad he should get a nanny for the kid and he’s having flashbacks to all the dangerous shit he chewed on as a kid and all the knives A-Sang could get his sticky hands on in their house, he swears he’s babyproofed like ten times now) and now it’s fate. Absolute love at first date and even if they break up they know damn well they’re gonna be sticking together for the sake of giving these kids some ounce of stability in their lives, and it’s actually kinda nice.
Anyways. One day when the kids are like six they meet Meng Yao, currently picking up like two kids from the daycare center (twins, his youngest siblings, now MXY cause he’s not born yet, but he’ll show up later) and they’re calling him brother and he’s fussing over them like a parent and then he looks at LXC and NMJ and they’re all ‘oh no he’s cute’ and invite a very stressed out looking Meng Yao (he has like twice as many classes as any sane person and he’s passing all of them with very high grades but he hasn’t slept in a while) to their weekly cafe date where they go to a nice little cafe off campus and buy a stupid amount of coffee and then spend the day playing with the kids cause LXC and NMJ never got played with as kids either, and MY isn’t really sure how to turn them down (they fukin hawt but also he’s on a scholarship and has basically no money that’s not going to keep the kids fed and clothed and he’s not really willing to spend it on frivolous things like dates) so he reluctantly ends up going, and it’s nice and they’re both basically rich boys who don’t make him pay and the kids make friends.
By the time they meet Jiang Chang and Wei Wuxian, the boys are both 10 and now Meng Yao is juggling two seven year olds and a one year old infant and tbh it’s actually Jin Zixuan who tracks him down when he finds out his father has been apparently dumping his bastard children on his first bastard son and Meng Yao looks TERRIFIED because he’s always been threatened that he’s not allowed to talk to his fathers only legitimate son and that if he does his father will cut off all contact entirely but leave him with the kids. Jin Guangshan has been keeping a tight leash on his finances, paying for his housing and stuff and food for the kids, but even then it’s barely enough and his boyfriends know that any sort of date or fun activity needs to be paid for by them or he can’t go at all because their father is terrible and just wants to abuse a poor kid who just made the mistake of agreeing to give his half siblings a better life.
Anyways. LXC and NMJ aren’t there yet or they likely would have threatened (lol LXC can’t threaten, he might try to deescalate the situation tho) Jin Zixuan, but they’re still not to the cafe yet and Meng Yao was in the middle of giving Mo Xuanyu a bottle and he’s basically stuck there, and he’s tired and the espresso hasn’t kicked in yet and JZX is saying something but MY isn’t paying attention.
Until the cafe doors open and two arguing ten year olds come barreling through, arguing about Pokémon or something and pulling each other’s hair. And JZX just sorta. Sighs.
He turns around to look at the kids with a disapproving frown. ‘A-Cheng, don’t pull A-Ying’s hair. Where did your sister get off to?’
Obviously, their older sister, JZX’s fiancé, was supposed to be keeping an eye on her terrible two, but A-Ying said she found a pretty hair pin in the store down the street and they got bored waiting for her and the shop owner scolded them for touching things, but then A-Cheng said A-Ying was the one touching stuff!! And now they’re arguing and pulling hair again and JZX has to get up and gently lead them both over to the table by the hand, getting them both settled down and asking what they want to drink.
This is so fucking surreal, Meng Yao almost forgets he has a fussy baby in his arms demanding attention until a slobbery little hand smacks him in the face and he goes back to gentle cooing at the little thing while giving him his bottle.
‘Oh! Is that A-Yu? Zi-gege said we were looking for A-Yu today! Can we play with him?’
Meng Yao isn’t sure what to do as the kids devolve from questions into arguing again. The twins are giving them funny looks, and since the boys were lead to the table, have finally abanonded their pretty drawings (they were drawing Yao-gege and also ErGe and DaGe too but they hadn’t gotten around to A-Zhan and A-Sang yet) to come back over to the table with Meng Yao and their new baby brother.
The two terrors stop arguing. A-Ying looks excitable. ‘I’m A-Ying! This is A-Cheng! Who are you?’
The twins look up at Meng Yao nervously, and he smiles at them gently, not knowing what else to do here.
Is Jin Zixuan here to take Xuanyu with him? He really hopes not. He isn’t sure what he and the girls would do to lose their new little brother. Things were tight around the house, just barely getting by with what they had, but Yao couldn’t lose him.
The first little girl, closest to Yao’s hand holding the bottle smiles. ‘I’m A-Ju, and this is my sister, A-Su.’
Su was a confident little one, but she had Yao’s tendency to watch people too critically before attempting to say anything. Ju tended to be more open.
JZX comes back and stands behind the boys after he’s given them a couple sandwiches and milky tea, and just stares at the two girls that he hadn’t realized were with Meng Yao, and his features went from hopeful to dashed quite fast.
The door to the cafe opened up and Meng Yao looked up to see NMJ and LXC coming in with a new woman that he didn’t recognize, but the boys across from him got excited to see immediately, shouting out for their jiejie. Meng Yao just sat back, feeling a little sick, entirely unsure what to do now.
The kids are playing together. A-Zhan is staring at A-Ying in a way that suggests he can’t figure the boy out, and A-Ying won’t stop poking at him like he’s some sort of toy. A-Zhan, for his favor, seems content to let him. A-Sang, as usual, abandoned all of them to draw with the twins.
Admittedly, Meng Yao might have been holding the baby a little bit tight when he finally agreed to go to a private table with JZX, but he hadn’t really calmed down from the request until JZX said NMJ could come with, and it takes a gentle hand putting pressure on his neck until he lets up the tense way he’s holding little Xuanyu at Mingjue’s guidance.
He can’t do this. They can’t do this. He’s had Xuanyu for almost six months now, he’s /bonded/ with the little termite. He’s watched the baby’s first steps, holding onto the couch as he tried to climb up to be with his sisters. He’s cut back on work hours.
Their father suggested he cut back on work all together. That comment had solidified it for Meng Yao in a way that nothing ever did before. Their father wanted him truly captive and reliant on his benevolence.
Zixuan, for his part, looks genuinely sorry. ‘I never came here to worry you. I don’t know what you /think/ I’m here for, but I promise I have only the best intentions, and I don’t want to take Xuanyu away.’
Meng Yao goes even more tense if possible, and his voice is shaking. ‘Don’t... don’t /want/. Do you /intend/?’
Zixuan makes a horrified little noise, shaking his head. ‘No no no, of course not. Not that either I promise.’
Meng Yao nearly sagged in place, tiredly turning the fussing child in his arms so he could gently bounce him, letting Xuanyu hold onto his thumb while Meng Yao forced himself to relax.
Zixuan sounded so desperately sad when he spoke again, and Yao could see tears in his eyes. ‘I’m... I’m so sorry he did this to you. I didn’t even know about the girls till they showed up.’
Meng Yao nodded a little, unsure what to say beyond a shrug. ‘If I had been less young, less naive, maybe I wouldn’t have so eagerly agreed just so he would have a reason to stay in my life. That doesn’t mean I won’t do whatever I have to to keep them.’
Zixuan nodded. ‘Of course, I would never want to do that. Listen, I didn’t know about the girls, or even if you wanted to keep Xuanyu, so I didn’t bring the paperwork with me, but I do know a way to get you out of all of... /this/.’
Meng Yao’s brows furrowed. ‘This?’
Xuanyu nodded slowly. ‘Father still pays for everything for you. Apartment, utilities, bills, all that goes through him. I, as his heir, have access to all those records. It’s supposed to be mother’s job, but she refuses to touch anything that has to do with fathers... illegitimate kids.’
Meng Yao doesn’t think he’s ever met someone who would talk so frankly about all this. It was oddly refreshing. Even NMJ and LXC didn’t want to admit their father had dug him a financial grave and was slowly burying him alive with the kids.
He frowned. ‘I can’t even move in with Mingjue or Xichen because he’s a raging homophobe who thinks I’ll corrupt the kids that he cares so little for he doesn’t even properly give us enough to survive off of.’
Zixuan looked honestly distressed at that. ‘Oh. Fuck that’s worse than I hoped for. I’m so sorry.’
Meng Yao sighed, moving to look out the window. He shrugged. ‘It’s not like I’m /forbidden/ from having a job. It’s just harder with three kids. Mingjue and Xichen have been helping out for years, he just doesn’t know it because he doesn’t realize that banks aren’t the only way to keep track of finances now days.’
Mingjue tolled his eyes, his thumb moving gently against Meng Yao’s neck. ‘It’s like the old man doesn’t even realize PayPal exists.’
Zixuan snorted. ‘He really doesn’t. That takes care of half of what I’m here for. Even if he was giving you enough that you didn’t have to worry about food or bills, I would still be here to give you the access info to an account I set up for you last week. When the papers are signed, the only thing anyone but you will be able to do is put in the money. No one but you can close the account or take anything out.’
Meng Yao looked at him in shock. ‘Why would you do that?’
Zixuan made a stressed out angry noise, nose wrinkling in the same way Yao’s did when he was mad. ‘Because, I’ve seen his finances. What he’s giving you barely counts as pocket change to his bloated rich ass. I could drop a five million on you right now to ask you to move away and never come back and he wouldn’t even /notice/ because that’s how little that amount would be to him. He wouldn’t even realize you four had left until he realized he couldn’t find any of you.’
Meng Yao considered it for a moment. ‘Why /dont/ you do that?’
Zixuan’s expression was pure distaste. ‘Because I don’t have any reason whatsoever to hate any of you. I feel terrible that you made the mistake of being fathers newest whipping dog, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to pity you. You’re in a bad position, and I’m here to help you out of it. But I’m also not going to leave you without financial support. You may want to keep the kids, but these weren’t your mistakes to begin with, and father has been punishing you for years for it.’
Mingjue snorted, sitting back with his arms crossed. ‘You really don’t like your dad, do you kid?’
Zixuan shook his head. ‘Not particularly, no. Other than the bank account, I can convince father to give over full custody of the kids to you. No possible way to get any of them back.’
Meng Yao blinked at his half brother, sitting up straighter again, looking at him in shock. ‘How would you do that?’
Zixuan shrugs. ‘He’s not the only manipulative one in the family. I could get him to panic and drop custody entirely.’
And so that’s the story about how Meng Yao had a coffeeshop romance and also ended up with some kids out of it. Later on he and Mingjue and Xichen all move in together in a huge new house with all the kids and they’re. Happy.
You Are NOT the Father
Tony gets a surprising revelation when he walks in on Young Avengers hijinks.
This doesn't follow Endgame, but there are a few minor things taken from it so fair warning.
“Hey, have you guys seen Spider-kid anywhere?” Tony asked as he and Pepper walked up behind Sam, Barnes, and Natasha, the latter of whom smirked and pointed forwards.
Tony turned, only to feel his jaw drop at the sight before him.
The kid he’d just been asking after was currently lying back on a weight bench holding the bar aloft. This wouldn’t be too alarming, except the bar Peter was holding was not only playing perch to Shuri, Loki, and Lila (the first two girls sitting on either side with the last balancing on the center), but was also being loaded down by weights Tony knew were specifically designed for the likes of Hulk, Thor, and Steve because he was the one who designed them.
Steve and an armored Rhodey were the ones doing the loading while Thor stood by Peter’s head like an over-enthusiastic spotter. Behind them, Harley appeared to be recording the whole thing from atop a beanbag chair while Strange meditated midair next to him. Cassie was leaning against Dog on Harley’s other side, eating popcorn and tossing pieces of jerky to the giant ant while Groot laid next to her playing a video game.
“What is going on here?”
Peter lifted his head just long enough to give the man a smile before refocusing on his task. “Hey Mr. Stark, can’t talk now.”
Tony turned to Natasha for an explanation, but Strange spoke up before he could.
“They are testing to see how much weight he can handle.” He opened an eye. “For the record, I don’t approve. I am only here in case medical aid is needed.” He closed his eye.
“Also for the record, we just got here,” Sam added, giving Tony a nervous look and gesturing towards himself, Barnes, and Natasha.
“And what’s your excuse, Capsicle, Point Break, Rhodey?”
Steve shrugged and carefully added another weight to the bar in time with Rhodey. “The kids were going to do it either way. I figured it was better they had someone to supervise. Besides, it is good to know your limits.”
Barnes snorted.
“I was also made aware that it is better to have someone to help manage the weight, which none of the young ones can do,” Thor added.
Loki sent him a look. “I could handle it.”
Thor gave her a smile. “I’m sorry, sister. You just look so small in your new form that I misspoke.”
The reborn goddess scowled then suddenly transformed into a man taller than Thor and as hulking as, well, the Hulk. “If I wished to appear a brute like you, I would,” he said in a gruff voice.
“Woah, Loki!” Peter yelped as the bar tilted with the unexpected extra weight and Lila stumbled, just managing to catch herself before she fell.
Shuri, meanwhile, looked unaffected, if a bit amused.
“Apologies,” Loki said, returning to normal, though the teen remained male.
Unfortunately, this merely had the opposite effect as Peter’s compensation for Loki’s added weight that no longer existed sent the bar careening the other way. Lila did fall off this time, thankfully into Thor’s waiting arms, while Shuri slid off the bar and onto her feet.
Loki was tossed onto Peter, who huffed at the impact and barely managed to keep ahold of the bar.
“Alright, I think that’s enough for today,” Tony snapped and Steve and Rhodey immediately moved to take the bar from Peter.
The kid grudgingly handed it over to the “Boo!”s of Harley and Cassie and the jeering “I am Groot!”s of said talking plant.
Loki pulled himself off the older boy, dusting himself off and giving Thor an annoyed look. “This is all your fault.”
Peter jabbed him in the side with his toes, saying breathlessly, “You’re the one who shapeshifted while sitting on the bar!” He then rolled off the bar before Loki could retaliate, coming to stand next to Shuri.
“Alright new rule, Young Avengers, no playing around with the heavy weights,” Tony said, crossing his arms.
Loki, as per usual for learning about any new rules being placed against him, looked affronted while Peter just pouted at his mentor. The three off to the side looked unaffected, Groot already having returned to his game and Cassie and Harley shrugging it off.
Lila, who was now sitting on Thor’s shoulder, crossed her arms back at him. “How are we supposed to test Buggy’s strength if we can’t use the good weights?”
“Buggy?” Peter muttered and Harley snorted.
“Now you know why I turned down Ant-Girl,” Cassie chuckled.
Loki tapped his chin, “He could lift up a car, then we could just put heavier and heavier things in or on it until either the car gives in or he does.”
“No. No, no, no. No more ideas from you, Orpheus,” Tony cut in. “I will come up with something. Something that won’t end in him being squashed by a car.”
“I would have spotted for him,” Loki tutted with an eye roll.
“Come now, the young ones are just having fun,” Thor said, coming over to slap Peter’s back. Lila, still on his shoulder, laughed as the boy stumbled. “And your son has proved he has the strength to stand with the mightiest of heroes. You should be proud.”
Tony opened his mouth to say he would be prouder if the kid would stop pulling stupid stunts before Thor’s words truly caught up with him. “My what now?”
“Your son,” Thor said, frowning. “Peter.”
“He’s not my… You thought the kid was… I don’t have a son!” Tony sputtered and darn it he could hear Pepper giggling behind him.
“He’s not yours?” Thor said deflating.
“No! Why would you think that?”
“Well, you know, the… technology…”
“Wait, Spidey’s not yours? Like seriously?” Sam asked and Tony turned to see him and Barnes giving him unconvinced looks.
“He’s seventeen! Pep and I’ve only been married for -”
“All due respect,” Strange cut in, dropping to the ground. “But I doubt anyone thought he was Mrs. Potts’. Just yours.”
“And what’s that supposed to mean?” Tony asked, narrowing his eyes at the sorcerer.
“Considering your past, it’s not inconceivable that you’d father an illegitimate child or two.”
“Despite what you and many others might think of my past, I was very careful during my past… interactions,” Tony trailed off, very aware of his wife standing at his back. “I have no illegitimate children.”
“No matter how many women have tried to say otherwise. For the record, I had paternity tests done for both Harley and Peter ages ago.”
Tony spun around towards her and Pepper rolled her eyes.
“Only so that we’d have proof in case such rumors started going around the news feeds when the two became more public. In case your forgetting, I was the one who always had to escort your interactions out. I’m perfectly aware you’ve covered your bases.”
“So?” Barnes asked. “What were the results?”
Pepper chuckled as Tony turned to scowl at him. “They were both negative.”
Tony threw his hands up. “Alright, raise your hand if you thought Underoos was my kid!”
After Steve confirmed that Underoos referred to Peter, everyone in the room raised their hands save Loki, Natasha, Harley, and Pepper.
“Rhodey!” Tony shouted at his best friend, who shrugged as much as he could in the suit.
“I thought you were just trying to keep it on the down low.”
Something registered in his mind before Tony could continue yelling. Slowly he turned to Peter, who dropped his arm with a blush.
“Awkward!” Harley called cheerfully.
Peter shot him a look. “Oh like you never wondered why Tony’s always giving us attention out of literally anyone else in the world.”
Harley shrugged. “Nah. Though I think my mom’s still half-convinced she had a drunken fling with him and just can’t remember. Kind of wish she had, though. He’s already a better dad to us than my dad was to me and he doesn’t even dad us.”
“He totally dad’s you,” Cassie snorts. “He’s seriously got that whole dad-aura whenever he’s around you two and Morgan that he doesn’t have any other time.”
“I am Groot,” Groot said, shaking his head. “I am Groot.”
“He said you have the appearance of sharing roots,” Loki translated. “Also, you talk the same. His words, not mine.”
Lila nodded. “I would have thought he was your dad even if dad hadn’t told me you guys were father and sons.”
“Clint told you they were related?” Pepper asked and Lila nodded.
“He knows they’re not,” Natasha said, shaking her head. “He was messing with you kids.”
Lila laughed. “Yeah, I figured, Auntie Nat.”
“Wait, when did I get dragged into this?” Harley asked, sitting up. “People think I’m his kid too?”
“Obviously,” Shuri said.
“Hey, I think we broke Stark,” Loki said, smirking at a frozen Tony.
The genius was still gaping at Peter.
“Tony?” Pepper whispered, setting her hand on his shoulder. She turned to the others. “Alright, I think that’s enough excitement for today. Kids, Carol brought back treats from her trip to Tønsberg,” she called before leading her husband out of the room.
“You okay?” she asked once they were alone.
“He really thought — They all thought that Pete — that both boys were mine.”
Pepper smiled and wrapped her arms around his neck. “Everyone knows how much you adore those boys, and they both are so much like you. It’s not unbelievable that people might wonder. That’s why I had the tests done.”
Tony wanted to argue that, but found he couldn’t, so instead he focused on what had been his biggest point. “They thought the only reason I would care about them was because they were mine. Peter thought that!”
“Oh, Tony.” She pressed her face into his shoulder. “You know he didn’t mean it like that. You know how self-deprecating he can get sometimes, kind of like someone else I know.”
He huffed and she smiled up at him.
“He idolizes you. It’s not that he thinks you wouldn’t want to pay attention to him, he just doesn’t think he’s worth you paying attention.”
“That’s insane. That kid’s amazing. We need to work on that.”
“Pots and kettles,” Pepper mumbled before kissing his cheek.
I saw this post and had to write a thing. It was only supposed to be Harley at first, but then some of my MCU Young Avengers headcanons shoved their way in.
The World Beyond The Woods: A Conspiracy Theory
There is a conspiracy in Sofia’s WIP. She’s lying to all of you, and I would like to set the record straight. Spoilers ahead for a novel that isn’t even released to the public yet.
Now, you might be asking: How do you think you’re even the smallest bit qualified to answer questions about Sofia’s book? Well, I know a lot about TWBTW. Sofia and I met over her first draft two and a half years ago, and I’ve gotten to know a lot about Asher, Will (who originally had white-blonde hair instead of dark hair), Alex (originally her self insert but has since become much more mean than Sofia is), Scarlett, Chrona, and all the rest. I’d consider myself a Ser expert in particular, as I wrote a full 11k word short set in the angel world for her birthday last year. Sometimes, I feel like I know more about Ser culture than Sofia does. She doesn’t care much about the angels.
Also, I’ve read two drafts of TWBTW. I say that’s a pretty major qualification. I think I might be the only person to have read it.
Well, Sofia and I were talking today about conspiracy theories we leave in our writing. They’re crumbs of an idea that we won’t really develop. For example: In my current project the life changing moment that begins the plot could have easily been misinterpreted by the protagonist. Therefore, everything bad that happens to him is all his fault.
Well, Sofia admitted that she had a conspiracy theory about Will in particular. She told me what it is, but I’m not going to tell you that. Instead, I’m going to tell you my own theory. My theory is more believable than hers in all honesty. It’s a high quality theory, I hope you enjoy.
Asher is not Will’s brother. He’s actually Will’s Dad.
Okay, I know this sounds crazy. Hear me out though. Will’s never mentions a pre-Asher past. The first moments he has is meeting Asher. What was happening before that? Sofia doesn’t want us to know that. She’s hiding that from us.
Asher and Will have to explain that they’re not actually brothers, everybody assumes they’re related by blood because they have an almost familial resemblance. They’re a similarity between them, even the face claims Sofia chose look like relatives. Why would two dream demons (the only two in her book, they’re particularly rare) who are not related at all have such similarities? Sofia is lying to us, she must be lying.
“So they’re biological brothers then,” You’re telling me. Alas, I cannot believe that. Asher is MUCH older than he claims, and his parents have been dead for longer than Will has ever been alive. That practically eliminates any possibility of Asher having any siblings (Although Sofia considered including a biological sister of Asher’s at some point. She was going to betray him and work for Chrona). Asher has lived a long time, and there’s a pretty good chance he at some point could’ve had a child.
Next, let’s think about Asher. He is a total mess, and he’d be a terrible father. He’s hardly a good friend. He knows it. So does it seem so far fetched that if he were to have a child, he would abandon it? Like, he can hardly handle taking care of himself without dying. He couldn’t handle a young child while also leading a rebellion and/or living as a slave under Chrona.
Finally, Asher treats Will more like a child than as a peer. From Asher’s overprotectiveness from literally the beginning of their relationship, to gambling his safety for the safety of everyone else in the demon world. This isn’t just brotherly love, as it would’ve grown over time. Asher must have had some relationship with Will before to have this affection so soon. Like… Asher feeling regrets and trying to find his illegitimate son.
So Sofia, I know your secrets. I know your evil plans. The people deserve better Sofia, and I am going to provide that to them. My only question is: Who’s the mother?
The Stark Romance Saga--Book #3: A Fire in Winter
Previous Installments: Loved I Not Honor More (Book #1, Robb Stark/Jeyne Westerling), The Iron Scoundrel (Book #2, Theon Greyjoy/Asha “Not His Sister in This Universe” Harlaw), and Kissing the Kingslayer (Book #2.5, Catelyn Stark/Jaime Lannister).
The Style
Sweeping old-school Susannah Leigh or Jennifer Wilde, but less offensive.
The Leads
Jon Snow, 20 years old, rising star in the Night’s Watch and (HE THOUGHT!) Lord Ned Stark’s illegitimate son. Tries very hard to be good and never admit to himself that he wants anything that the Night’s Watch can’t give him. Secretly full of hurt feelings and pent-up sexual energy, but he’s hoping to wear himself out with fighting, ranging, and Wall-maintenance for the rest of his life so he’ll never have to deal with it. Has a bad-ass albino wolf-dog, Ghost.
Ygritte, 23 years old, a wildling spearwife who longs for unity among the Free Folk and an end to the Others. Fiercely proud and righteously angry with the “kneelers” who have trapped her and her people beyond the Wall. Otherwise has a friendly and mischievous nature. Fond of archery, music, and pretty lads. Quietly grieving for family and clan members lost to the Others. Will never admit that her loss and displacement has made her feel lonely.
The Prologue
The confrontation between Jon and Catelyn at Bran’s bedside, largely unchanged. Jon, half-determined to prove himself in the Night’s Watch and half-resentful that all the adults responsible for him agreed so swiftly that he should join, visits his comatose half-brother despite his reluctance to anger Catelyn. He says goodbye to Bran and tries to offer sympathy to Catelyn, only to be harshly rebuffed. (Catelyn probably just snaps at him to get out, as in the show, rather than offer up the book’s crueler, more deliberate “it should have been you.”) He also reflects on how much he’s going to miss his dad and siblings.
The Set-Up
Not that different from canon, except for the part where she dies. Jon, marginally wiser and older, is on a dangerous mission in the Skirling Pass with Qhorin Halfhand, grizzled old Night’s Watch veteran. Jon reflects a bit about how he came to this literal and metaphorical pass (basically, he learned not to be a thoughtless dick to his smallfolk peers, plus it turns out White Walkers are real). Then Ygritte and her raiding party descend upon Jon and Qhorin. Jon manages to capture her, but they have a Moment and he lets her go instead of killing her. Later, he and Qhorin are surrounded by the Free Folk (including Ygritte, who personally captures him right back).  As per the mission, Jon kills Qhorin and pretends to join the Free Folk. Despite their differences and the complicated situation, Jon and Ygritte find themselves liking each other. They’re sleeping under the same furs at night, and one thing leads to another. (The consent issues in the book might still fly in a romance novel today, but I found it unnecessarily unpleasant and complicated even in ASOIAF; didn’t Jon have enough painful issues around sex with the bastard stigma?) They keep on doing it, and the cave scene happens verbatim.
Then comes the raid on the Gift, where the wildlings attack an old man and Jon, horrified, comes to his defense. Having blown his cover, he rides back to the wall, full of arrows and regret. Ygritte consequently realizes that Jon turned his cloak on her and vows to hate him forever.
And that’s when things get weird.
The Middle
After making it back to the Wall and recovering from his injuries, Jon finds himself in another pickle: some of the senior members of the Night’s Watch  want him executed for killing Qhorin and doin’ it with a wildling. Despite Maester Aemon’s arguments on his behalf, things aren’t looking too good for Jon...until he’s kidnapped and thrown on a ship in the dead of night by some mysterious Essosi dudes who turn out to be Unsullied. One of the Unsullied (a Common-Tongue-speaking fellow who named himself Drogon the Human after one of the instruments of his freedom) eventually explains that Jon is secretly the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark. It turns out that Daenerys Targaryen left Slaver’s Bay in the hands of the former slaves (who are doing quite nicely, as they had a plan in place that only needed some judicious use of dragons to work) and sailed to her birthplace of Dragonstone, where her people discovered Rhaegar’s secret diary (sample passage: “I’m going to use dishonest means to get fifteen-year-old Lyanna Stark to run away and have PROPHECY BABIES with me!”). Now Daenerys wants an alliance between her forces and the North...and how better to do that than to marry the half-Northern, half-Targaryen Jon Snow?
Jon’s not so sure. He’s going through a crisis, feeling undermined in his Northern identity and family relationships but definitely not feeling like a Targaryen either. He’s doubts that his illegitimate Targaryen half brings anything to the table politically, partly because he doesn’t share Daenerys’s view that Westeros wants a Targaryen restoration. Finally, although Daenerys is lovely and charming and kind and brave, he can’t feel anything romantic for her...and it’s not just because she’s his aunt, which is kind of weird. No, he also misses Ygritte, and it kills him that he’ll never see her again. After Daenerys guarantees that she’ll help all his family members and the smallfolk and the wildlings, though, he knows marriage is the best choice. Because nothing will get them good PR like marrying in the Sept of Baelor, they agree to postpone the wedding until after they take King’s Landing.
Meanwhile, Ygritte has been having a rough time. After surviving the Battle of the Ice, she and a small band of Free Folk try to eke out a living north of the Wall while planning their next move. (Without Jon’s leadership, the Free Folk never have the option to go south.) Her group is attacked by White Walkers and becomes even smaller. Heartbroken and lonelier than ever, Ygritte is at a loss...until she realizes that she’s pregnant. At first she feels happy, then pissed off about being happy, then worried how she’s going to raise a child in this frozen horror show. At last, she swallows her pride and resolves to go see Jon at the Wall. Obviously he doesn’t love her, but she figures he’ll feel obligated to help her, the baby, and maybe even the Free Folk as a whole. Unfortunately, when she sneaks into Castle Black, she finds out that Jon mysteriously disappeared right before he was supposed to be executed. “Oh, fuck, no,” she says, but she’s not sure what to do other than go to Winterfell and inform his family that some bullshit is happening.
During Ygritte’s journey to Winterfell, Daenerys and her army successfully take King’s Landing. I won’t go into details, but the victory is just difficult enough to keep the battle from being anticlimactic. It happens just after Tyrion’s escape from King’s Landing, so the only remaining Lannisters are Cersei, Tommen, and Kevan. (Jaime is, at Catelyn’s secret request, in the Riverlands searchng for Arya.) Kevan dies in battle; Cersei and Tommen disappear mysteriously. The Tyrells and most of the other families shrug and side with Daenerys fairly quickly, because she has dragons. The smallfolk are like, “Huh, well, maybe she won’t be a volatile sadist like Joffrey; after all, most of the Targaryens weren’t like Aerys.” Their doubts are further assuaged when Daenerys’s policies turn out to be relatively egalitarian. Jon is happily reunited with Sansa (more about her later), even though they weren’t super-close as children, but is heartbroken to find no sign of Arya. He and Daenerys begin to make wedding plans.
Ygritte gets to Winterfell and is greeted by sympathetic new mom Jeyne Westerling and a moody, troubled Bran. (Robb and Catelyn are fighting in the Riverlands again; Rickon’s actually doing swell for once.) They’re both happy to offer a home to their unborn niece/nephew and its mother; Bran even takes her reports of the White Walkers seriously and starts to confer with the other bannermen as the Stark in Winterfell. Yet Ygritte isn’t anywhere near happy. Seeing Jon’s home has made her see how different their worlds are, plus she’s angry and hurt that he was off marrying his aunt while she thought he was dead. She’s about to head back north when Bran and Jeyne persuade her that Jon would never truly want to marry his aunt and sometimes you just to risk everything for love, respectively. Ygritte realizes they’re right and rides hell-for-leather to King’s Landing.
The Conclusion
The wedding’s about to happen. Sansa, initially enchanted by her secretly royal half-brother’s imminent marriage to a beautiful young queen, senses that all is not well and asks Jon if he really wants to go through with it. He says no, but he has to go through with it because it’s his duty and he’ll lose what little honor he has if he backs out. Sansa realizes that his motives are all wrapped up in bastard stigma and talks about how she used to think that everyone, including herself, would be okay if they just did what society told them to do, but then she discovered that the world was wrong. Her speech affects Jon, but not enough for him to call off the wedding so late...until Ygritte appears on the steps of the Sept of Baelor, out of breath and vocally angry with him for leaving her behind.
“I’m sorry,” he tells Daenerys, who nods in a gracious and dignified manner. She’s secretly relieved that she doesn’t have to make a third political marriage and can just concentrate on ruling for a while (plus banging Daario Naharis on the sly).
Then Jon tells Ygritte everything he’s learned: he thought he was wrong to love her and break his vows, but instead he was wrong to leave her. He never dared to hope she would want him back, but if she’s come all this way, maybe she would be willing to marry him?
“You’re only saying that because I’m pregnant!” Ygritte shouts. Then she goes on for a little while about his precious duty and precious honor.
“You’re pregnant?!” Jon finally interrupts.
“Wait, what?” says Ygritte. But she’s convinced, finally, that he meant what he said. Otherwise, why would he give up marrying Daenerys in such a publicly embarassing way?
Daenerys gives a hastily improvised speech about how Jon and Ygritte’s marriage symbolizes unity between all different types of people in Westeros. The crowd is like, “huh,” but the wine is flowing pretty freely and it’s something to talk about.
Jon and Ygritte head north the next day, Sansa in tow, and are joyously reunited with Bran, Rickon, Jeyne, Robb, and the rest of the Winterfell household. (Theon and Asha send them a pineapple from the Summer Islands for the wedding, but it’s probably called something stupid like a spineapple.) In private, Catelyn stiffly thanks Jon for bringing back Sansa and apologizes for being unkind to him as a child; it doesn’t really change the past, but he can appreciate it for what it is. Jon and Ygritte are married in the Godswood. Afterwards, there’s a feast. It’s not entirely a happy occasion, though, because they all feel the absence of Arya deeply. A place is set for her at the table, though, in hopes that one day she’ll come home.
The Epilogue
Jon and Ygritte are living together at the Wall. Reforms have been made to the Night’s Watch, partly thanks to Daenerys’s unconventional views and partly thanks to the North’s commitment to fighting the White Walkers. Members can now enlist for ten-year shifts, not just for life; women can join; and, perhaps most pertinently, members can marry!!! So Jon goes down on Ygritte and it’s 100% legit.
Subplots
Sansa goes through most of her A Storm of Swords plot. Now released from her betrothal with Joffrey, she thinks she’s found allies in the Tyrells; however, her planned escape via marriage to Willas Tyrell is scotched when she and Tyrion Lannister are forced to marry by Tywin. Under the circumstances, she cannot love him, yet she appreciates his decency towards her and feels sorry for him because his family is cruel to him. When Joffrey dies, she and Tyrion are both arrested, leaving her to wonder whether he left her to share the blame for the crime; she feels betrayed, somehow, by the possibility. (Littlefinger tried to get her out, but there was a hitch in the plan, so he shrugged and sailed to the Vale without her.) She’s overjoyed to be returned to her family, yet she feels like she doesn’t quite fit with them after her experiences.
“Arry,” still suffering from amnesia and now calling herself “Nan” (short for Nymeria), has escaped from Harrenhal with her friends Gendry and Hot Pie. They join up with the Brotherhood without Banners, where she finds some small measure of peace. However, she’s still massively traumatized and troubled by her lack of identity. It becomes less painful, eventually, to stop wondering who she was and move on with her life. (Let’s assume that Beric Dondarrion et al never got a good enough look at her in King’s Landing to identify her.) At one point, Sandor Clegane tries to kidnap her, insisting that she’s Arya Stark, but she thinks he has worse intentions than ransoming her and manages to run back to the Brotherhood.
Bran, also traumatized by the events of The Iron Scoundrel, continues to have troubling psychic visions. Taking action against the White Walkers as the Stark in Winterfell helps, but he still struggles with feelings of helplessness and isolation. Also, he knows his mom is secretly in love with Jaime Lannister and understandably thinks that’s really fucked up.
Sam and Gilly fall in love as they journey from Craster’s Keep to the Nightfort and then try to deal with all the crazy shit happening at Castle Black. They get married once the Night’s Watch reforms take place (perhaps in the epilogue?) in a subsequent novella.
❤ ∗ ∘ ▌ ❝ SEONG VICTORIA: ∗ biography ∗
Tumblr media
full name: seong victoria.  alias ( es ): vic, tori.  day of birth: august 20th.  age: twenty six.  gender: cis - female.  species: human.  sexual orientation: bisexual, biromantic. place of birth: seoul, south korea.  employment: businesswoman.
height: five feet, seven inches.  weight: one hundred twenty pounds.  hair color: jet black.  eye color: brown.  piercings / tattoos: ears.  birthmarks: none.
positive traits: intelligent, driven, open minded, clever, sensible.  negative traits: aggressive, snarky, secretive, entitled. record: no.  smokes?: no.  drinks?: occasionally.  drugs?: occasionally.
siblings: seong, isabella, half sister. seong, blair, half sister. seong, christian, half brother.  children: none.  pets: none.
The Seong Family’s extensive wealth originates with a story from generations ago, often told to the children who sat at their mother’s feet. The narrative goes that a grandmother — many greats ago — was favored by royal families for her tailoring, designs, and the structure of her clothing. Although you’d most likely sleep through the politics and the controversies of her position as a royal seamstress, the most important facts come from the future, the growth of generational tradition that soon grew into one of the most well known clothing companies of all time, thus creating the wealth that the family sits on today. And so, Seong Manufacturing began to dabble in a wide array of other things, wherever those who ran it could stick their foot in the door, making the company what it is today.
As for the family, and its children, they’re expected to continue on the legacy, and run the family business. The family followed old school rules, first born males always to take over the chair of the last before them. However, the rule doesn’t currently apply. In most recent years, Vincent Seong married his wife, Jisoo, much to his own family’s dismay. She certainly wasn’t the woman his family preferred to match him with, considering her simplistic background as a preschool teacher. However, the two had fallen in love with their opposite personalities, a contrast that was almost refreshing, Vincent being quite privileged, reckless, stuck in his narcissism while Jisoo remained selfless and sweet. Despite their union, family disapproval only worsened as the woman failed to provide the family —- and their company —- with a male heir. There was little Isabella, but that simply wasn’t enough. The pressure and stress of his own family, his position at the company, had Vincent in search of an escape, which he found in an affair with the woman his family initially intended that he marry, along with alcohol and other substances that he continuously abused on a day to day basis. That affair brought him an illegitimate child, who he’d hide from his family for years on end. However, soon enough, Jisoo produced more children, bringing little Christian and Blair into the picture.
But what about the lovechild of the forbidden lovers? Her name is Victoria. Growing up, she knew who her father was. They’d spent their time together in secret. In fact, the times which Vincent spent away, his time with Victoria and her mother were where he found the most of his relief. Like her half siblings, the girl was spoiled, believing herself an only child, she often grew curious as to why her father would be gone for months on end. Eventually of course, all was explained. They were the other family. Facts of the affair, and the pregnancy, were not to be publicized. It would only cause a public outcry, only dismantle the family. And so, they were to keep quiet. Victoria was to be shipped to England for majority of her middle and high school education, the best of private boarding schools to prepare her for what was to come. “You need to be ready,” Vincent had always said to her. For what, the girl was unsure.
Years later, she’d found out what he meant. A tragic accident occurred. One for which, her half sibling, Christian was blamed. Jisoo Seong was pronounced deceased at on sight. After that, everything moved all too quickly. It was the year that she graduated high school, soon to attend Harvard to study business. It all seemed too soon that Vincent married the other woman. That Victoria was moved into the Seong Family mansion, welcomed by all besides her half siblings due to her mother’s status. Proclaimed a step sibling to the public and the media. It should seem ideal. But the entirety of it all only made Victoria sick to her stomach. It was too much change. All of her life, she’d been hidden. And now, to be loved by most, but hated by those within her remote reach was a challenge that grew her desire for one thing: exposing her dear father. A handwritten letter to the press did just the trick. An anonymous source, of course. After the details were dug into, Vincent was forced to forfeit his seat as CEO of Seong Manufacturing. And so, Christian, having been deemed by their father as unfit due to his behaviors following his mothers passing, was set to the side. Room was made for the half sibling, who fought her way to the top, to become the next to run the business, a choice that the family approved of due to her mother’s family background.
Today, Victoria remains in the seat that she arranged to slip from under her father, all without him knowing. The fact that she’s the person behind it leers over her daily, though she stays strong in her position. The arrogance, the seriousness and entitlement, are all a front. Victoria will prove to the world that she deserves her seat in the CEO chair. After all, she is a Seong.
❤ ∗ ∘ ▌ ❝ IMPORTANT INFORMATION :
relationship - status ( multi - ship ) : single
fun facts:
- victoria is a polyglot.
- despite the work and success that she finds in her position, she isn’t too fond of it, nor of her actions.
- victoria almost married a prince.
5 CONSUMER HOAXES AND SCAMS CIRCULATING IN MOBILE
Tumblr media
It’s the most wonderful time of the year…when scammers and hoaxes run rampant across the region. Even living in an area with neighborhood camaraderie all over town, Mobilians aren’t immune to cons. As we delve deeper into the holiday season and a time when thousands are reeling from natural disasters, here are five consumer hoaxes and scams circulating in Mobile.
 ●        Fake Charities
o   This one, unfortunately, is the most common. You think you’re giving towards a worthy charity, but instead, someone is just using goodwill to line his or her own pockets. With one of the most active hurricane seasons in years, residents naturally want to give anything and everything they can to help those affected. Research the charities you see and only give to ones who have a proven track record or can show exactly where the money is going.
o   This is also prevalent during the holiday months. There is a multitude of stores and charities that open their doors to help less fortunate families during the holidays. For every legitimate organization or cause, there are just as many illegitimate ones. Ask stores what their policy is for accepting recipients and give to those that have screened the applicants. The holidays are a wonderful time for giving, just make sure you’re giving to the right people.
●        Fake Family and Friends
o   We’ve all gotten the email about one of our family members being trapped in a foreign country and needing money, all the while they’re sitting next to us on the couch. But scammers and hoaxers are getting smarter. They check social media sites to figure out when someone actually has left on a trip and then they contact someone who appears to be a close friend or family member. This is increased ten-fold during the holidays; an email request from your sister asking you to wire her money for your half of your parent’s gift seems to be on the up-and-up. Always find a way to get in touch face-to-face or over a phone call with those people to make sure they are the ones really sending a request.
●        Gift Card Scams
o   It’s so easy to just give gift cards for holidays, birthdays, and to send to those in need after a natural disaster. When you want to purchase one, go to stores that keep them behind the counter or buy one that is in a protective envelope. Scammers will rub off the barcode, wait a while for that card to be purchased and then use the barcode to buy things, leaving the card with no funds. Also, no matter how sweet and cute it looks when people are set up in a booth on Bienville Square, never ever buy an unverified gift certificate or card from someone on the sidewalk.
●        Illegitimate Contractors
o   After a hurricane or tropical storm has hit, the desire is to just get back to normal as quickly as possible. This can lead to hiring any contractor that says they can do the work. Mobile has gotten just large enough that it’s possible to not know every contracting company in the city. This shouldn’t lead you to thoughtlessly hiring anyone that walks by though. Hire a contractor you trust or one that’s referred to you. If you need a specific trade done, then do your research and don’t hire anyone without a website or at least a Facebook page. Make sure they have a presence in the community because, if not, there’s a good chance they won’t have a presence at your house. If they require some form of payment up front, ask for a signed contract by both parties to avoid them taking your money and running.
●        Fake Gift Sites/Facebook Sales
o   If you find a site with a deal too good to be true, it probably is. Don’t be lured in by flashy numbers and too low prices. All you’ll be doing is giving money for a gift that will never arrive. This also applies to the Facebook sites that pop-up on the marketplace. Make sure you’re buying from a real person and not just a bot. In addition, be careful about how they want to sell to you. If you live in North Mobile and someone wants you to drive out of your way at night and won’t negotiate meeting halfway, you’re probably walking straight into a scam.
 *Bonus: It’s almost Halloween as well, so be careful when searching for a scare. Our beloved town is filled with ghost stories, making for a fun haunted tour and spooky night. But don’t be drawn into an unclaimed story. While it’s always fun to imagine and speculate, don’t let someone walk you into a house downtown to find a ghost without some sort of supervision. With that being said, if someone tells you there’s a house off Government Street that was the site of seven murders and they want to go check it out, walk away—that’s a long circulating and long disproven hoax.
 These five consumer hoaxes and scams happening in Mobile this season can be deceiving and easy to fall for. Be vigilant and protect yourself and others. THE CONTEMPORARY FAMILY
 Family Today: Declining or Changing?
   Definitions, Types and Descent
Family
•       a group consisting of parents and children living together in a household.
•       In the context of human society, a family is a group of people affiliated either by consanguinity (blood relation), affinity (a natural liking and understanding of someone), or co-residence or some combination of these.
Traditional Definitions
•       Filipinos are family oriented. The anak-magulangcomplex and the kamag-anak relationship are very important to Filipinos. Family centeredness supplies basic sense of belonging, stability and security.
THE PROBLEM OF DEFINING THE FAMILY
Declining Marriage rate and     increasing rate of cohabitation
Increasing annulment rate
Increasing number of cases of     domestic violence
Increasing number of women     entering the labor force
 ·         Article I of the Philippine Family Code fixes the definition of marriage  and the resulting  family based on the Union:
·         Marriage - the legally or formally recognized union of two people as partners in a personal relationship, also called as matrimony or wedlock
 v  PHILIPPINE FAMILY CODE (it is the general law that governs family and property relations in the Philippines) excludes same-sex marriage and polygamous (one or more spouse) union.
v  Illegitimate child -  are children who are born out of wedlock. The child must use the  surname of his/her mother.
v  Cohabitants - to live together as if married, usually without legal or religious sanction.
                      - to live together in an intimate relationship.
      -  they’re not recognized as ‘official’ families.
 Difference of Family and Household
According to The  Census Bureau:
Family and Household are different concepts and not interchangeable.
 Familyhas two or more members who live in the same home and are related by birth, marriage or adoption; while, household consists of one or more persons living in the same house, condominium or apartment. They may or may not be related.
*Family members who are separated by distances, especially overseas Filipino workers, cannot be considered as family.
TYPES OF FAMILIES
•       Nuclear Families
-          Approximately half of all families with youngsters under age 18 are composed of two biological parents and their children.
    -   Nuclearization of the families the process of growing predominance of nuclear families over extended families in both rural and urban areas
•       Single Parent Family
- a person who has a dependent child or dependent children and who is widowed, divorced, or unmarried.
•       Cross Generational Family
   - Two or more adults from different generations of a family, who share a household.
•       Extended Families
      - A family that extends beyond the nuclear family, including grandparents, aunts, uncles, and other relatives,
Descent
•       the origin or background of a person in terms of family or nationality.
2 types of Descent Groups
UnilinealDescent  -is a system of determining  descent     groups in which one belongs to one's father's or mother's     line, whereby one's descent is traced either exclusively through male     ancestors (patriline), or exclusively through female ancestors     (matriline).
•       Matrilineal Descent -  matriline is a line of descent from a female ancestor to a descendant in which the individuals in all intervening generations are mothers – in other words, a "mother line".
•       Patrilineal Descent - also known as the male line, the spear side, agnatic kinship,  is a common kinship system in which an individual's family membership derives from and is recorded through his or her father's lineage. It generally involves the inheritance of property, rights, names, or titles by persons related through male kin.
2.    Ambilineal Descent - is a system containing  both unilineal descent groups – i.e. both patrilineal and matrilineal groups – in which one belongs to one's father's and/or mother's descent group (lineage).
•       Neolocal residence - residence is a type of post-marital residence when a newly married couple resides separately from both the husband's natal household and the wife's natal household.
•       Patrilocality - patrilocal residence or patrilocality, also known as virilocal residence or virilocality, are terms referring to the social system in which a married couple resides with or near the husband's parents.
MARRIAGE
           Marriage is the union of a man and a woman who make a permanent and exclusive commitment to each other. According to Edward Westermarck (Finnish philosopher and sociologist) He defined marriage as “a relation of one or more men to one or more women which is recognized by customs or law and involves certain rights and duties of both in case of parties entering into the union and in the case of children born of it.” Marriage is at the center of every kinship system. Kinship means the state of being related to the people in your family.
There are 2 kinds of marriage in Kinship system:
1.    Endogamy- the custom of marrying only within the limits of a local community, clan, or tribe.
2.    Exogamy- a practice of marrying outside one’s group.
Marriage as a union of individual establishes consanguineal. Consanguineal means related by blood. They are related by consanguinity, if they have a common ancestor or one is a descendant of the other. For example is the child or parent, grandchild, sister, brother, or grandparent etc. Affinity means a family relationship through marriage of a relative. For example is the spouse, mother-in-law, father-in-law, son-in-law, daughter-in-la, stepson, stepdaughter etc.
           In today’s generation, our society has accepted the same-sex marriage which is the marriage between two people of the same biological sex or gender identity. Equal marriage is the legal recognition of same-sex marriage or the possibility to perform a same-sex marriage. In October 1989, Denmark became the first country in the world to legally recognize same-sex unions, after passing a bill legalizing “registered partnerships”. In 2003, Belgium became the second country to grant legal recognition to same-sex marriage.
           There are 2 types of marriage:
1.    Polygamy- marriage that includes more than two partners.
Example:
Muslims, Islam, Nepal
a.    Polygyny- When a man is married to more than one wifeat a time.
b.    Polyandry- When a woman is married to more than one husband at a time.
c.    Conjoint marriage- If a marriage includes multiple husbands and wives.
2.    Monogamy- a form of relationship in which an individual has only one partner.
Example:
Romantic Love
Issues on Family
Ø  Families and Domestic Violence
o   Family Violence – It is when someone uses abusive behavior to control and/or harm a member of their own family, or someone with whom they have an intimate relationship with.
o   Domestic Violence – It is the abuse by one person of another in an intimate relationship.
Which can lead to:
DIVORCE AND REMARRIAGE
§  Divorce – A court order saying that a man and woman are no longer a husband and  a wife.
§  Annulment – a judicial statement saying that there never was a marriage between the man and the woman.
§  Legal Separation – A decree that gives the husband and wife the right to live separately from each other, but are not allowed by the law to remarry.
The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Families
Here are some dominant ways that individuals in same-sex households come to parent children:
Ø  Through the prior relationship with a different sex partner that resulted in the birth of a child
Ø  Through adoption
Ø  Through the use of assisted reproductive technologies
Ø  Becoming a partner to someone who has done one or more of these things
Transnational Families: Virtual Connection
-       Families who live apart but who create and retain a sense of collective welfare and unity.
Although you’d most likely sleep through the politics and the controversies of her position as a royal seamstress, the most important facts come from the future, the growth of generational tradition that soon grew into one of the most well known clothing companies of all time, thus creating the wealth that the family sits on today. And so, Seong Manufacturing began to dabble in a wide array of other things, wherever those who ran it could stick their foot in the door, making the company what it is today.
As for the family, and its children, they’re expected to continue on the legacy, and run the family business. The family followed old school rules, first born males always to take over the chair of the last before them. However, the rule doesn’t currently apply. In most recent years, Vincent Seong married his wife, Jisoo, much to his own family’s dismay. She certainly wasn’t the woman his family preferred to match him with, considering her simplistic background as a preschool teacher. However, the two had fallen in love with their opposite personalities, a contrast that was almost refreshing, Vincent being quite privileged, reckless, stuck in his narcissism while Jisoo remained selfless and sweet. Despite their union, family disapproval only worsened as the woman failed to provide the family —- and their company —- with a male heir. There was little Isabella, but that simply wasn’t enough. The pressure and stress of his own family, his position at the company, had Vincent in search of an escape, which he found in an affair with the woman his family initially intended that he marry, along with alcohol and other substances that he continuously abused on a day to day basis. That affair brought him an illegitimate child, who he’d hide from his family for years on end. However, soon enough, Jisoo produced more children, bringing little Christian and Blair into the picture.
But what about the first born male of The Seong Family? His name is Christian. Seeing as his father was particularly absent in most cases, for the most part Christian remained under his mother. The two were close, and spent a large amount of time together. For the first dozen years of his life, Christian received his education from the Seong Mansion, all of his teachings coming from a professor whom his mother had hired. When he wasn’t learning school basics, he was learning life lessons by listening to the words of the woman whom he admired the most. Christian’s liking for his mother was seen by his father as a weakness. Not only did the boy seem to take little to no interest in taking over a the family business throughout his youth, but he seemed to portray many more artistic traits rather than the logical ones that his family would have preferred. For this reason, his father insisted that he be sent as far away from his mother to receive his education as possible. In this case, a boarding school in The United States. Christian wasn’t allowed to returned until the beginning of his high school years. Although certainly a changed child, he still reunited with his mother the way that he always had.
Only a year after Christian’s return from his study abroad, a horrific accident took place —- with himself behind the wheel. Although the other driver involved was found at fault, it was his family who chose to leave the burden of the blame on here. Although always indifferent towards him to begin with, his sister Isabelle seemed colder than ever, while Blair was too young to know much, Victoria seemed to have a newfound sympathy for him that he only pushed away. In fact, he had chosen to push everyone away after the death of his mother. The results were a drop in grade point average, suspension from various schools, a downward spiral that the rest of The Seong Family didn’t approve of at all. That was why Christian was the only family member in shock when the removal of his father from the CEO chair ended with Victoria, only a half sibling, taking his place in the stead of him. Ever since, Christian has made a point of distancing himself from the family, deciding it best to remove himself as the burden that he knew he was.
Today, despite his difficulties, Christian is a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Harvard’s Business School. In 2016, he took the technology industry by storm with his younger business partners, Yuna and Max. Although it may seem like he should be on top of the world, surrounded by a company stocked with loyal employees and enough money to secure himself and his family for years on end — considered to be the marketing brain behind technology that would have never taken off otherwise, life isn’t always what it seems. Not when drug and alcohol abuse, along with self inflicted isolation are not just vices, but unhealthy coping mechanisms, crutches to maintain the life everyone believes they wished they had. The silver spoon is poisonous, after all.
