Headcanons for Astarion and Tav spending winter time

Aight, writing for the fluff challenge has me thinking about this a lot, so why not exploit it some more, eh? Some of these are/will be used in the drabbles plus more stuff. So, here we go:

Does Astarion like winter? For sure not, this vampire is made for summer time, elegant summer clothing and also... a beautiful summer tunic on his partner is just so much more beautiful than all the winter clothes (and easier to take off, he has a point there)

You can convince him though that winter time has its perks because there's so much more cuddling and who really wants to get out of bed when it's that cold outside, right?

Astarion will however use every given opportunity to make a fashion statement - expect beautiful but dramatic, winter cloaks with fur, elegant gloves, winter tunics with beautiful embroidery (although he might enjoy just throwing on a sweater at home - especially if you had it stolen before and your scent still lingers on it)

Also winter festivities were mostly hurtful reminders this far, but now? With you by his side, he will enjoy them a lot more

Also: let's not forget that it may be cold outside but the nights are much longer and give you more opportunity to be out and about

He sneakily hangs up a mistletoe somewhere in your place and waits like a predator to assault you with kisses every time you catches you under it; "Astarion! This is the tenth time today! You know you can just ask me for a kiss, don't you?" "But darling, where would be the fun in simply asking? Isn't it so much more romantic when pure chance makes us meet here under the mistletoe time and again, my love?" "It's not chance when you keep lingering under it, Astarion!"

He enjoys decorations a lot more than he'd care to admit, he enjoys when your place smells of fresh pine from wreaths and other stuff you've put up and he likes the cosy atmosphere all the spread candles are creating for the two of you cuddling up while a snowstorm howls outside

Speaking of: expect Astarion to become the embodiment of a cuddly cat during winter time; he'll snuggle up with you under some blankets, in front of the fireplace, maybe with a nice book to read and a mug of mulled wine to enjoy

Astarion will also make sure you stay appropriately warm: no matter if he buys you a wooly sweater or makes you a nice coat himself; "My love, I'm cold enough for the two of us, you don't need to take on this quality of mine."

One more thing he absolutely loaths is: snow; he doesn't get it

Sadly you also can't change his mind by throwing snowballs at him - oh no! This will only cause him to show you that his rogue skills make for very good aiming and you'll soon both just be completely frozen; but it's worth it because you could swear you heard him laugh and see him smile despite him proclaiming this all childish

Once he figures you are very much into all of this, he puts some more effort into it - he wants to see you happy; every time Astarion goes into the city and walks across the winter market, he'll bring you something: maybe something sweet, maybe a small piece of decoration - you feel very appreciated, you just hope he paid for that stuff and didn't just steal it; Astarion is elusive on the matter

The most important thing for him though is that he gets to spend winter time together with you - with all the gifts and challenges it may bring

“A rose upon you”

Rook x g/n reader, fluff

The first day, it was a red rose that smells vaguely of apples. Then it was a box of your favourite chocolates. The rose had a velvety garnet bow with gold trim around the edges. In gold embroidery was the initial "R.H." Seriously, who is this admirer of yours? You sat on the couch in Ramshackle’s lounge, holding the two items in your hands. Oh, Ace was there too. Your flaming tuna cat and Deuce were out buying snacks at Sam’s. 

"Oooh,” Ace cooed at you in a teasing manner, almost like when in elementary school a boy and a girl get called to the board together, or even in the same group, for that matter.

“Shut up.” You elbowed Ace in the ribcage, not hard enough to hurt him, but hard enough for him to get the message at least. You looked closely at the ribbon around the rose, softly tracing your finger over the embroidered initials. Ugh. Everything this person did made your heart race. You weren’t even sure you could think straight.

“Yo, look.” Ace pointed out the embroidered initials. "Obviously, that could be Rook Hunt…..he’s the only one crazy enough to do this anyway.” 

Rook Hunt….? The vice of Pomefiore. You will admit the two of you have gotten oddly close as of recently. He’d always try to help you with your work and would suggest you two go to the oddest places together. Such as the woods. At 3am. Why????

“I’m gonna go on a….walk?” You tell Ace and get off the couch and put on your fuzzy jacket and boots. You all but gently open the door. The icy winter air blasts on your face as you step out, snow crunching under your boot.

You don’t have to trek out much further until you hear someone call out “mon trickster” from the bushes. At this point, you’re not going to question why he was in your bushes in the first place.

“Were you the one behind... well, all this?" You ask bluntly, approaching him with the rose in hand. He steps out to hold the rose in his hand, gazing at the ribbon.

“Of course it was me. I thought you needn’t have to put much thought into it!!” He says all dramatically. “-Name- do you accept my confession of love??”

Your name instead of a nickname in French?! Does that mean he’s more serious than you originally thought? You take a moment to think about it. After all that happened in Styx, the Pomefiore vice was with you every step of the way. He always made sure to check on you to make sure you’re okay, both physically and mentally. Sometimes it’d be by tapping on your window at 3 a.m., but that was his way of showing affection. “I do.” You say when you finally come to an agreement with yourself.

“Magnifique!” He grabs your hand abruptly, causing your heart to skip a beat. “I have so much for you to witness.” He pulls you off into the nearby forest, presumably to read you some poetry. The snow-capped trees looked a lot more inviting with him by your side. Forever and always.

Ma Xiuying from the Radiant Emperor duology!

Design/research notes under the cut

The characters read 馬秀英 (Pinyin: mǎ xiù yīng), her personal name, and 孝慈高皇后 (xiào cí gāo huáng hòu), her name as Empress.

There's certainly no dearth of material on Chinese clothing history out there. That is, if you can read Chinese, which I can't, so everything I have is from secondary and tertiary sources and/or relies on translation software. Fortunately, we're dealing with historical fantasy here, so some anachronisms are not only allowed but encouraged.

While Shelley Parker-Chan takes many liberties, the books are still set in a very specific time period, which is both a blessing and a curse. Most readily accessible resources will tell you about dynasties, which can span hundreds of years, and the duology takes place in a transitional period. So how to dress a Semu girl from the Yuan dynasty who lives with Nanren rebels wanting to revive the Song dynasty and who later becomes the first Ming empress?

Let's go through them one by one. The best resource was this book which is on the Internet Archive. I disregarded Mongol and Semu influences for the design since clothing is very much political and a way to either stand out or fit in with the surrounding society, see for example Wang Baoxiang wearing a topknot in Khanbaliq. Ma, I imagine, would want to fit in with the Nanren around her, so she's pretty much wearing the attire of Han women under Yuan rule. For the hair I went for something that looks youthful while being plausible, though I found very little on hair in this period, so who's to say.

The next one is from a specific scene in the book, so there is some description to go on: red, long sleeves with gold embroidery, high hair, red and gold ribbons. Since this is the scene where Ma declares herself queen and future empress in front of the Red Turban, it has to be a very deliberate dress. It therefore takes inspiration from Song aristocrats' broad-sleeved gowns as well as from 翟衣 (dí yī), the highest ceremonial gown of both Song and Ming empresses. (Some examples for 翟衣 are in this post, which also features the bird shaped crown I just had to include, and this post.) Her hair still has the loops, but it's much more sculpted.

Finally, Empress Ma! This is mainly based on the two actual portraits I could find of the historical figure that Ma is based on, with elements taken from other portraits and paintings. It includes 凤冠 (fèng guān), the phoenix crown, 霞帔 (xiá pèi), the sash, and 禁步 (jīn bù), the jade belt. This video shows how Ming dynasty layers are worn, but it refers to a much later period so it's not quite the same as Ma's.

(Some additional, historically irrelevant notes: I realized too late that a right-to-left timeline might be more appropriate. Oh well! Also, how the colours photograph frustrates me, I swear I did not make her this deathly pale. And finally, some of the characters look a bit smudged because my cat spilled water on them. I did what I could to save them.)

imagine living in a place like this with wriothesley, everything being so unfathomably perfect it almost felt like dream.

the two of you are constantly tired of taking care of four little critters, too many acres to count, and a cottage house so ridiculously small that shouldn't even be named after a beech tree...

but its a simple and happy little life that took a lot of sacrifices― you watch the sunrise kiss the apples of his cheeks every morning through the casement windows of your shared en suite. of course, his raspy and rich laugh reaches your ears way before you're able to roll over in the bedsheets searching for his presence.

from this distance, you're able to discern him in huge cotton overalls with a straw hat that his kids insisted on matching with him when he gardened. dirt often collected under his fingernails despite how chipped and short they were against the tips, but your daughter wanted you to teach her how to knit, just so she could feel like she did more than her brothers in the backyard.

they were patterned with flowery embroidery which never tried matching her fathers aesthetic, yet he always seemed to find himself frequently washing them, pestering her when she was going to make him a hat, or a pot, or a jar filled with "100 reasons why i love my daddy".

and when you didn't see him outside, with little hushes of your boys squealing as wriothesley would drench them with the outside hose, rubbing soil all over his kids, or rigorously teaching them how to set up fertilises, you always awoke to a delicious aroma of coffee and maple syrup. like it was the only thing to remember the weekends by.

one by one your kids would push through the tiny opening on your bedroom, the smallest one being lifted up hastily under her armpits by her dad; and they'd jump on you, screaming "wake up! wake up! it's pancake time!!"

you didn't mind, though, seeing wriothesley was always the last to leave. your cat often hated this.

"good morning, beautiful, did you sleep well?"

and then he'd remind you of what else he'd done while you were sleeping; setting up flowers in a fresh vase that reminded him of you when he was out in town, more seedlings which were bound to get lost in your shed somewhere, and raw honey that was a "necessity" for whenever your kids got the flu.

he was more innocent than you originally thought he was― his rough exterior becomes more and more welcoming, and his smile turns more handsome.

maybe this life felt so simple because wriothesley was the epitome of that. maybe this life felt so homely because your kids reminded you every day of how much they loved you. maybe this life felt so real because you had already gotten everything you wanted and much more.

Cass sometimes appears as a special guest in your stream and sometimes in Stephs.

Your father even sent a generous red superchat, showing he is supportive of your Vtuber activities. He is nicknamed by your fans Fairy God-daddy much to your flustered state and even got fanart based on your avatar. It didn’t help that you mention he is very popular among the ladies.

Overall they are willing to go to your concert, when you have one in person or go crazy on buying your merch. They also go to your special events as well when they have time.

Harley Quinn is also a big fan of yours and is part of your membership. She never misses a stream.

To everyone getting a new sewing machine, as well as everyone who is working on last-minute holiday presents:

If the decorative stitches on your sewing machine are coming out ugly, there's a few things to try.

Your decorative stitches are basically embroidery, so give the project the same support you'd give a machine hoop embroidery project.

Bobbin: embroidery bobbin thread is much thinner than standard sewing thread. This really cuts down on the bulkiness of the stitch. If you want your decorative stitching to lie flat, you want to reduce bulk. You're having problems in a satin stitch, where the thread piles up on itself, makes a knot, and stops feeding? Embroidery bobbin thread will help prevent that, because it takes a lot more embroidery bobbin to make a knot big enough to stop the feed teeth. It's also thinner, so you can fit more on a bobbin and need to change your bobbin less. Embroidery bobbin is usually only available in two colors, but it's made so that your top thread will wrap onto the back and look prettier.

Stabilizer: For any hoop embroidery project, you need stabilizer. You can also put it behind your fabric in a decorative stitch. This will keep the fabric lying flat, and support your stitches. Some decorative stitch patterns will have the stitches very close together, and many woven fabrics can't support that many stitches. Stabilizer is meant to provide that support. There's versions that tear away (my current favorite is tear-and-wash), or that stay in the fabric permanently. If the back of your project isn't visible, keeping the stabilizer in there will show off your stitches and make it more attractive. You can buy a single promo pack of tear-away stabilizer for like $5, and if you're only using small strips of it to reinforce decorative stitching, it'll last you a really long time.

Thread: If you're doing a project with decorative stitching, you might as well use a decorative thread. Embroidery thread, must like my dear cat Teensy Buttons, is very pretty, but not very strong. While you don't want to use most machine embroidery threads for construction stitching, it does decorative stitching really well. If you're doing satin stitching, the shininess of the thread will really emphasize the stitching. For decorative stitching that's composed of single lines of stitching, switching to a 40wt embroidery thread will make the design stand out more.

“This is the fountain tip pen you wanted, remember? I saw you eyeing it that day we went out and I wanted to surprise you! That’s why I took on so many shifts.” 

Lucifer’s smirk shifted, lips parting in a soft ‘o’. “That pen is the most expensive on the market right now- you must’ve worked yourself into the grave nearly. You didn’t have to do this for me.” 

The chuckle you let out set his cheeks ablaze

Your hands worked the pen out of its container gently, trailing the end over his gloved hand

“I didn’t have to, no. I wanted to. You’ve been working so hard- I thought it was my time to do something for you for a change.” 

You placed the pen in his hands, leaning up to give him a kiss on the corner of the mouth. “I love you, Lucifer Morningstar.”

He watched you leave his study in silence, feeling the rapid beating of his heart scream at him

Without a second thought, he ran after you and grabbed your wrist, twirling you around to face him. “I love you so much more, Mc.”

Mammon

“H-huh?”

His expression was absolutely priceless, making you beam up at him even brighter, “I said I’m sorry for working so much but it was to get you this, so I don’t feel too bad.”

In your hands was the newest demonix watch model- in 24k gold. Which is to say, it was super fucking expensive

Blue hues darted from the watch to your eyes frantically, “Holy shit.” He took in a deep breath, “Holy. Shit.” 

Your laugh was loud and bubbly, sending him reeling from the amount of fondness in your tone. Carefully, you latched the watch on his wrist, smiling up at him like he was the one that hung the entire solar system 

“Surprise, Mammon!” 

He gasped for stolen breath, fingers twitching until they were crawling up your shirt to press into the skin of your waist

For a moment he couldn’t even speak. All he could manage to do was pull you closer, drink in the way you shivered when the coldness of the watch brushed against you, and crash his lips onto yours 

“I love you. I love you so fucking much, Mc.” 

Levi

In true Levi fashion, he just stands there and stares at you with a bright blush and wide eyes 

“You know you’re cute when you react like that, but can you help me with the box? It’s bigger than I thought it’d be…” 

Eventually you finally get the piece out of the box and jump up and down excitedly

It was a custom made Lord of Shadow’s castle for Henry’s aquarium. The entry ways were big enough to swim in and the inside was all hollowed out for him to move around

“Tada!! I saw it on Devtsy and immediately knew you needed to have it.” 

Levi was speechless as he examined the professional craftsmanship but then he jumped out of his skin, “THIS MUST’VE BEEN SO EXPENSIVE?!” 

You snorted, “why do you think I took on so many shifts these past two weeks?” your arms made themselves at home on his shoulders, “You deserve it. For being my best demon.”

“I-I…” his bottom lip trembled, “I love you, Mc! I love you, I love you, I love you!” 

“I love you too, Levi. Now let’s get this into the tank! Henry looks excited.” 

Satan

You know the blank look cats sometimes have with their eyes all wide? Yeah that was Satan

It made you do a little jiggle in excitement, “They actually had to restore parts of the leather and moonsilver embroidery, so it ended up costing just a biit more- which is why I took on the extra shifts after I said I was done working for a while.”

Satan’s eyes scanned the ancient spellbook - the one he’d been searching for for years - with a small disbelieving laugh bubbling up

His smile of pure joy sent you through the roof, hands squeezing and releasing the book rapidly. Your movement brought his eye down to the corner of the book where his name was engraved- in your handwriting

“Mc…” Almost too quickly for you to keep up with, he’d grabbed the book and set it down, hands now busying themselves with picking you up and spinning you around

You laughed loudly, “So you like it?”

“I love it, Mc.” Satan pulled back to smile at you again, “And I love you.” 

“Yeah?”

With the spellbook now back in his grasp, he waved for you to come sit in his lap, “Yeah.”

Normally Belphie’s lack of immediate reaction didn’t bother you, but you were nervous
