ccan i be crazy for a second as a Detective Media Consumer

this post actually drives me nuts and normally i'd be like whatever everyone on the internet uses hyperbole but op clearly doesn't know much about the genre or archetype and the fact that a bunch of people who also don't know a lot about the genre agree with them is a littleee aggravating likeeeee

while they aren't wrong that plenty of fictional detectives are affiliated with law enforcement most of them are not

arguably the most influential ones aren't affiliated with law enforcement and hate cops, not just sherlock holmes

'all of them should be weirdos about-' they are. they are amateurs who enjoy mystery solving.

it's worth noting -- bc op brings up holmes in the tags of their og post -- that holmes popularizes the fictional detective archetype and that's why many of them are actually not police detectives

let's look at a few of them

philo vance: famously hated by the police, messes with investigations for fun

john dickson carr's gideon fell: another amateur detective, also annoys tf out of the police

edogawa rampo's akechi kogoro: literally a college student with a hobby (sound familiar?) who often runs circles around and deceives the police to get culprits off the hook when he feels like it

soji shimada's kiyoshi mitarai: an astrologer and college professor who gets brought cases by his crime enthusiast boyfriend, hates the police and nearly gets arrested by an officer for being disrespectful

seishi yokomizo's kosuke kindaichi: another amateur sleuth who's often underestimated by police investigators

yukito ayatsuji's kiyoshi shimada: a buddhist monk who solves mysteries part time because he's a mystery enthusiast

nisioisin's iichan: literal college student, solves mysteries because he happens to be there

nisioisin's jun aikawa: a freelancer in many fields who isn't solely a 'detective,' but isn't tied to any one organization or agency

etc etc etc

like yeah there are many detectives who are even p.i's that are often affiliated with or working with the police (L from death note, shawn spencer, etc) to act like they're typically written or portrayed like a cop character is so...??

when. a very clear, defining facet of the archetype is that they aren't part of the police force. and it's usually because these stories often feature officers as their culprits. like. .

not to mention that many of these characters are also meant to solve their crimes in unconventional ways, apart from the bureaucratic methods of a crime scene investigator - again they are Guys With a Hobby they're Mystery Enthusiasts and i'm sure a lot of authors find more freedom writing a private investigator than a cop because cops are supposed to wrap things up a certain way. they're supposed to be aiming for arrests. sometimes a detective doesn't want to do that. sometimes they want to solve the crime, lie to the police, and get the culprit off the hook bc they know the truth and don't think that the culprit deserves to get jailed and they dgaf if that's "right" or "wrong" in the eyes of the system

like i do think that a lot of more 'mainstream' media like criminal minds or CSI or whatever do portray a very different sort of detective but traditionally your fictional detective is a private investigator and their stories usually mandate that the police are incompetent, corrupt, etc in order to benefit the amateur sleuth who usually has poor rapport with them

it's definitely rarer to find detective media where zero cops are involved, i get it, but i think it's crazy to completely ignore that the entire genre originated from and is built off the backs of guys who cannot mind their own business to save their lives

Anyway, so yes, I can definitely rec you some fics! BUT I should also offer you two suggestions you can totally do to read ANY fic!

On Ao3, you can click on the “Entire Work” button to load ALL chapters of a fic (it’s the very first button along the top) and in turn you can then just read it all there! 

And the very last button along the top, you can Download copies of the fic to your phone or computer with eBook file types (AZw3 for Kindle, ePub for iPhone’s Books app, and MOBI is for other mobile devices and e-readers), the HTML if you want to read it as-is in a web-browser, or the PDF format which is a universal file format that is supported by everything, even web browsers, so it’s a good one to download if you don’t know what format you need :) If you read on an eReader, though, I can’t recommend enough just downloading the format for your device. You get to keep a copy of the fic AND the eReader keeps it nicely formatted. It’s a BRILLIANT, BEAUTIFUL feature that Ao3 gave us, because I like downloading all my fics and read them later in iBooks. Once you start that, Nonny, you can’t do it any other way. AND at the VERY END of the fics, it links BACK to the original post so you can bookmark, kudos, and comment on it!! <3

So yeah, two options you can do to solve your poopy internet and still read long fics hee hee! <3

“Careful, Evil Spawn, your jealousy is showing. People might actually think you’re human.” Christina Yang taunted, teasing her colleague and tossing a piece of popcorn toward him. It hit Alex in the arm and dropped to the floor beside the wheelchair he occupied. He glared at the assaulting food as the other interns snickered and smirked, their laughter filling the empty hallway. 

Karev scoffed and rolled his eyes at them, sneering at Yang. “Yeah. Whatever.” He grumbled, gripping the handles of the wheel chair a little tighter, and swiftly turning away from the other interns. He heard them muttering and giggling behind his back, and so he turned back, face red with annoyance. “I just - I don’t get it, what does that guy have, that I don’t?” He argued, gesturing wildly behind him toward the entrance of their hideaway. “The dude is a tool!” 

The four other interns exchanged thoughtful looks, very much enjoying their antics. “Good hair,” Izzy chimed in first with a shrug, stating the fact as if it should have been obvious. She smacked George in the arm, who nodded in agreement, “Great hair, actually. Like, it’s always just so perfectly, well-groomed…” Izzy made a few hand motions for added effect, touching her own head of blonde hair. She made a few more side comments about his rugged good looks and broad shoulders.

“Talented hands.” Meredith added to the list, but then quickly corrected herself before anyone got the wrong idea. “He’s a world-class surgeon.” She shrugged, glancing at Alex who shook his head, feeling betrayed. He scoffed again.

“A heart.” Christina stated bluntly, stealing a laugh from Meredith who shook her head and instantly tried to hide her smile for Alex’s sake. “A soul. Decent human emotions.” She continued, the laughter bubbling up again around them.

Alex had heard enough and he stood up, “Screw you guys.” He grumbled, storming off in the opposite direction. This only made Christina laugh even more, mocking him with a pouty lip and fake teary eyes.

“I’m sure he doesn’t give people syphilis either!” George called out after Alex, who replied with a few choice words of his own, flashing him the finger over his shoulder.

He couldn’t believe them. They were supposed to be his friends! They were supposed to be on his side and agree with him, not make him feel worse about the whole situation. But maybe they were right? What chance did a guy like him have against a guy like that? 

As if the universe were mocking him, a portrait of Dr. Perfect stared down at him at the end of the hall. He sneered at it before turning down the next hall, heading for the lobby at the front of the hospital.

He paused at the main nurses station, collecting a patient’s chart in an attempt to distract himself with work. He looked over the information and tried to make sense of the numbers in front of him. But, no matter how hard he tried to focus, it did little to ease his racing mind and jealous heart.

With a huff of annoyance, he closed the chart and put it back into the slot, clenching his jaw. He scrubbed a hand over his face, trying to force away his frustrations. He scratched at the stubble accompanying his jawline. What the hell was he doing? He shook his head, annoyed and angry with himself. 

A familiar, adorable giggle reached his ears and seized his heart; it was a sound he’d recognize anywhere. He followed the beautiful sound and glanced in the direction of the grand staircase, spotting (Y/N) standing near the bottom of the steps with none other than the tool himself, Dr. Malcolm Ramsay; Dr. Perfect. 

Alex watched their exchange from afar and his lip curled with anger as the jealousy bubbled up inside of his chest, making his blood boil. It coiled and twisted inside of his stomach, making him feel sick. She looked so excited and bubbly and happy and it pissed him off knowing that it wasn’t him who made her feel that way. How could he?

He watched with disdain as the man touched her arm, affectionately squeezing it. She giggled and scrunched her nose up, making it crinkle cutely. Alex clenched his hands into fists at his sides, his jaw set. He had to look away, his stomach - and heart - couldn’t bear to watch anymore. 

Leaving the nurses station, he rounded the next corner and paused, making a decision. He couldn’t wait any longer, he needed to know; for his own sanity, he needed to know why she felt the way that she did and why it had to be him.

He waited impatiently for her, pacing the small section of hallway and earning himself a few odd looks from nurses and passing doctors. He would turn expectantly at every passing set of footsteps, only being met with disappointment. One particular set of footsteps caught his ear and when he turned to confront them, he was met with the (Y/E/C) that he adored so much.

Grabbing her by the arm gently, yet firmly, he tugged her into a nearby supply closet and shut the door with a loud bang. “Alex, what the hell?” (Y/N) gasped with a confused expression on her face. She rose a curious brow at the other intern, his back still to her. “Alex, what’s going on?” She asked again, hesitant to know the answer. Something was wrong.

“(Y/N) we need to talk.” Alex finally spoke, his voice agitated and a bit shaky. He turned to face her then, his expression hard and serious. He had his hands on his hips and his breathing was erratic, his chest rising and falling quickly, but he said nothing else.

(Y/N) made an impatient face as the silence built between them and she folded her arms under her breasts, sighing “Okay?” She questioned, dragging out the word with annoyance, “Alex, you’re being weird. What the hell is going on?” She asked with a huff, her lips pressed into a solid line. “Look, Alex, I’ve got work to do. Bailey is going to kill me if I don’t get these charts finished. Spit it out.” 

His stomach was in knots, doing cartwheels in his abdomen. His tongue felt like concrete in his mouth, too heavy to move. Fuck. Man up! Talk to her! “Why do you like him?” Alex blurted out suddenly, his brow pinched together and his eyes stern.

(Y/N) frowned heavily at him, “Excuse me?” She asked, confused and slightly offended by his assumption. “Like who, Alex? You’re not making any sense.” She rolled her eyes at the man.

“Don’t act like you don’t know. I saw how cozy you just were with him, giggling and doing that nose scrunch thing you do.” He stated, gesturing to her nose and face, clearly upset. 

“What?” (Y/N) scoffed at him and shook her head, her (Y/H/C) swaying with the motion. “You’re being ridiculous.” She muttered and moved to step past him, but he stepped in her path. “Alex.” She huffed, annoyed by his antics. 

“Answer the question; why do you like that tool? I need to know.” Alex insisted, his eyes searching hers for an answer. 

“Alex, move.” (Y/N) tried again, but Alex kept his stance firm and planted his feet. It became very apparent to her Alex wasn’t about to let this go any time soon. She looked away from him, her tongue making an annoyed clicking sound in her mouth before she huffed, giving in. “He’s not the one I like, Alex.” She admitted, forcing herself to look into his eyes.

Alex frowned at that, his confusion only growing stronger. “W-what, who then?” He asked, his tone not as harsh as before. He crossed his arms, trying to rack his brain and figure out who this mystery guy is. His face was scrunched and pinched between his brows, straining.

(Y/N) rolled her eyes, her expression softening a fraction. She studied his face, her eyes wandering over his handsome features and eyes full of so much emotion. “Do you really not know, dummy?” She stated, the softness of her voice catching his attention. There was another drawn out pause. “Do I have to spell it out for you?” She smiled a little at him, raising her brows in an attempt to silently fill in the blanks for him.

Everything began to click into place and his face began to relax at the realization. Alex swallowed the lump that had formed in his throat with her confession, his eyes falling to her lips briefly before meeting her eyes. A hint of a smile hitched up the corner of his mouth before he closed the distance between them, his hands cupping her face. Their lips met, hard and desperate to taste each other. They’d been dreaming of this day, the pair of them dancing around their feelings for months and now… now it was actually happening.

Alex’s heart was racing inside of his chest, pounding so hard he thought it would burst from his chest and flop onto the floor. He had to break away, but didn’t go far, their foreheads still pressed together. He smiled and laughed softly, sounding a bit breathless. Her hands were on his chest and he wondered if she could feel his heart pounding there. He rubbed her cheeks with his thumbs, his fingers cradling the back of his neck. 

“Does that answer your question, dummy?” She muttered and laughed softly, her lips connecting with his again in an affectionate peck. After a moment, she laughed again, “Wait, were you really jealous of Dr. Ramsey?” She questioned, teasing him with a raised brow. 

Alex rolled his eyes playfully, “Shut up.” He replied, silencing her giggles with another kiss.

Summary: you are at a friends sleepover for Halloween, thinking everything is fine and normal not realising what you signed yourself to.

Sitting on the plush bed, you manage to block your friends gossiping and giggling. You felt numb and off for an odd reason, clutching onto the pillow tighter trying to fill the needed unknown closure you craved. Rumi nudged you back to reality. 

“You doing okay over there- you’re spacing out big time.” you smile back at Rumi concerns. 

“yeah I’m doing alright thanks” before Rumi could ask you something again Nemuri busted into the room. 

“I FINALLY GOT THEM.” Throwing the contracts on the bed. All you and your friends went to go pick one contract up and holding it in confusion. Nemuri laughed in response. 

“I got them from a friend, we never really did anything spooky for Halloween girls so in these envelops are contracts which you have to sign and give a drop of blood which will supposedly come true.” Rumi gave Nemuri a deadpanned face and scoffed. 

“Are you a kid or something? you really think this is true?” Nemuri smiled. 

“Maybe. Maybe not. But come on its Halloween what is the worst that could happen.” your friends all gave each other an unsure look but shrugged it off. Nemuri went to go get pens and a needle and Rumi kept mumbling to you that we could have done something better other than do childish things. You opened the contract which had unknown words inscribed in it but a couple phrases in English. You softly read them out.  

“This who signs in hand with blood and ink, is signed in execution plagued after one deception after another.” Rumi looked at you weird. 

“Plagued after one deception after another? what the hell?” you just shrugged at her. At that point Nemuri handed you a pen. 

“Go on sign.” Her smile alluded in your sight. Felling this immense tight aura around you. The pen felt heavy in your hand. Every movement on writing your name felt like putting chains over you. Nemuri grabbed your hand and neared the needle till you managed to pull back and shook your head. 

“stop being a wimp, its just a fake contract.” fake.

The word repeated in your head like a carousel. You looked down at the contract. You felt weak. You felt a small prick in your finger and saw the drop of blood meet its end on the paper. Every thing dropped, the aura, the chains, the allusion. 

“I need some water please.”

Here you stood out the balcony, everyone dead asleep. You looked at your finger paying attention at the small scab reminding you off the contract. After that glass of water you and your friends continued your night by going on to playing a few games and watching a movie till calling it a night. You smiled at the fresh memory and stood straight. A flash of cold wind hit your back making you shiver, the trees rustling like mad. The finger began to bleed again but worse making you freak out. You began to back out until what you thought hit a wall, however the mysterious figure took your hand and licked your bleeding finger and sucked on it. 

Hold up.

What the fuck. 

“Damn I got a good one.” His chuckle vibrated down your body. He turned you around giving a full view of the man. His blue eyes pierced into you, his touch already imprinting over you. You tried pushing away but his grip tightened. 

“why you pushing away baby. you know you can’t do shit” You started to panic and without even thinking bit his hands hard. He laughed. 

yeah great thinking y/n. 

“so pathetic.” He moved his hand under your chin and gripped it, faced you towards him. “Don’t act clueless you know what you did and I don’t like annoying brats pushing me away. So you either do you part and be a good girl for me or ill make you suffer and burn you till your ashes.” 

You gasped and started screaming and shouting for help. 

“no one can hear you brat.” He gripped your hands again and you started to feel a burning sensation you screamed even louder. 

“Consider this as your warning.” The pain soaring through your body made you limp and numb, not repealing towards the aggressive kiss he pulled you into which embraced you to darkness. The only image you remembering is his sharp blue turning blood red. 

“its just a fake contract...”

Meeting You. ( Zenitsu Agatsuma x Reader ) I Headcanon

Darkness had come, the stars were twinkling in the night sky. The bright rays of the moon shone throughout the dark forest, giving light to those who dared to venture inside.

They say that those who go inside the forest, whether it be for curiosity or childish motives, have never been seen again. Only an idiot would have been foolish enough to go inside when such disappearances escalated with each passing night.

Sadly for Zenitsu, he was among the unfortunate few who ventured into the forest, albeit forcibly.

For this particular mission, a Demon was believed to be responsible for these disappearances. With the number of missing people steadily rising, there was no question that the creature had enough strength to be stronger than the average demon.

However, since he was tasked with slaying such a strong demon, another Demon Slayer was assigned as his partner. He was told he was going to meet the fellow Slayer when he arrived in the forest.

Still, the inevitable possibility of facing a terrifying and powerful demon has made Zenitsu shake relentlessly ever since he stepped into the damned forest. He had been walking for a while now, but there was no sign of a Demon Slayer in sight. This only made the knot grow tighter in his stomach as he continues to venture deeper.

"This is so unfair! Why was I even given this mission?! I don't stand a chance against a Demon like this! Why could've they just only give the mission to the other Demon Slayer?! They haven't even showed up! I'm going to be a dead man! I'm going to die sad and alone in this wretched place!"

He does not want to be here.

He just wants to be ANYWHERE but here.

He continues rattling and trembling with every passing step, glistening tears threatening to spill from his eyes. It doesn't ease his anxieties when he hears every little sound in the forest, from the singing of the Cicadas, the buzz of the Fireflies, and the heavy breathing of a large creature aggressively approaching him —

Wait.

Heavy breathing..  Large.. Creature..?

He whimpers, slowly turning around to meet the bulbous, bloodshot eyes of a Demon. It's elongated tongue was dripping wet with its drool, massive limbs sunk into the dirt, veins popping around almost ready to burst at any moment. A sinister glint was present in it's intense gaze, as it prepared to pounce at him at any given moment.

Zenitsu screams in absolute horror as he dashes off, shouting out profanity and insults as the demon immediately chases after him like a starved beast.

"YAAAAAAHHH! STAY AWAY! STAY AWAY FROM ME!"

The demon laughs venomously, picking up his pace to catch up with a crying Zenitsu, it's tongue extending out to strike him.

"No! NO! STOP THAT! DON'T TOUCH ME WITH YOUR FILTHY TONGUE! DON'T YOU DARE INFECT ME WITH YOUR DISGUSTING DROOL! YAAAHH!"

Suddenly, a glimpse of the Demon Slayer Uniform suddenly flashed, as the demon cries out as it's tongue and limbs were suddenly cut apart.

Zenitsu couldn't process his surroundings quickly, as he crashed into a tree. Immediately, his body ached from the collision, and he scrambled to face the demon. His back was flush against the hard trunk of the tree, as his heart continued to rapidly pound in his chest, the vibrations almost deafening his hearing.

He hears quick footsteps from above, high branches shaking loudly with each step. Surely, the other Demon Slayer was here now! He was saved! He was going to live and see another day!

But his inner celebration was interrupted as the demon screamed out dramatically in rage, as it instantly regenerated its tongue. Now, Zenitsu was suddenly well aware of his situation; here he was, cornered against a tree, with a scary demon right across him.

He screams again before the Demon could slaughter him, as he abruptly shuts his eyes as he could he could feel himself pass out at any given moment.

But then, claws and fangs never reached him. Zenitsu continued to shake and tremble, but he attempts to open one eye to see his surroundings. He sees the demon's head at his side, a stunned expression present in it's face as it disintegrates into nothing but dust.

He opens his other eye as he takes in what happened. Relief washes all over his body, but he becomes wary when he hears footsteps approaching him. He feels fear overtake him again, rapidly looking around to try to find the culprit behind the footsteps. He feels his face pale once more, realizing that he never saw the Slayer that killed a demon.

"Oh no, maybe they got angry because all I did was cry! I did nothing to help them! They're going to kill me! I'm dead, I'm a dead man! I'm dead, I'm deadI'mdeadimdeadim-"

He lets out a surprised yelp when a gentle hand touches his shoulder.  He looks up to the owner of the hand, and becomes flabbergasted when he sees a pair of [E / C] orbs staring at him with concern.

"Are you okay?" The mysterious Slayer voices out, an unsure smile present in her face.

Wait a minute.

A girl.. is there with him. He was saved, by a girl!

He was alone in this forest, with a girl!

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, A GIRL WAS TOUCHING HIM!

All traces of Zenitsu's cowardice have disappeared like lightning, as he slowly lifts his other hand to gently brush the girl's hand. A suave expression shapes his face, as he gazes into her eyes with a small smirk tugging on his lips.

"I am, now that you're here."

The girl's face turns beet red at this statement, and quickly retreats her hand from the boy's gentle grasp. She hurriedly scurries away from him, placing both of her hands in her face to avoid the boy's confused look as she turns away from him in complete embarrassment.

Zenitsu's confusion grows with actions of the girl. Usually, when he compliments the ladies, they would either slap him or just glare at him and mutter a "thank you." He never had a reaction when a girl would just cower away from him in panic.

He gets on his feet, slowly approaches the girl, and starts to sense her fear and hesitation of him. He feels the guilt begin to cripple within him, recalling how the girl literally rescued him from imminent danger when he was being coward. Now, here he was, making his savior uncomfortable only because he couldn't control his flirtatious behavior.

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry about my behavior! I'm sorry for making you uncomfortable right after you just saved me!" He begins, kneeling in front of the girl while clasping his hands together.

"You went through the trouble of defeating the demon while I was just cowering like an Idiot! I really thank you for saving me! I couldn't help you in any way because I kept whining and screaming, I'm so sorry for being useless, please forgive me!" He cries out, genuinely feeling remorse and regret form his actions.

The girl peeks out from her hands, and sees Zenitsu kneeling infront of her with tears streaming from his eyes. She hesitantly places her hands down, and kneels in front of him.

"..You weren't useless, mister.." She mutters out, making Zenitsu look up at her with utter shame in his eyes.

"While you were running and screaming, the demon never noticed me coming after him. You were so loud and fast that all the demon's attention was directed to you. If you didn't distract him, I would've been dead too. So.. thank you, for that." The girl trails off, giving him a shy smile, making the boy's heart flutter.

After that, the two of them walked out of the forest in silence. The girl never said a word during the walk, and Zenitsu could tell that she wasn't the type to speak unless spoken to. When she announced that she would now part ways with him, Zenitsu realized that he never got her name.

"Wait! I'm sorry for my rudeness, but I never introduced myself. My name is Zenitsu, Agatsuma Zenitsu." He introduces himself, giving the girl a warm smile as he holds out a hand for her to shake on.

The girl just gives him a small smile and, in agreement, nods at him.

"My name is [Y/N] [L/N]. It's nice to meet you."

For recs, these are the ones that I really, really like.There are more that I didn't add since the list will be too long. Anyway, I'll start with completed eng translations:

The Earth is Online

The premise is kinda like a survival game (this genre is called unlimited/infinity flow i just don't know how to explain it but they kinda play games in order to survive) so there's lot of action and horror/gore here. The romance is more of a subplot but the MC and ML's dynamic are just so good. They're a power couple like wangxian.

Seizing Dreams

To have the power to invade dreams is already amazing but using it to save people from their own demons just added more depth to it. That's what SD is all about. I love, love the MC and ML so much and even the side charas plus the plot is just mindblowing. I guess it's to be expected since it's by Fei Tian Ye Xiang (please try his works, it's all good!).

The Legendary Master’s Wife

This is one of the earliest danmei I read (yeah, i read this even before modao) and it's very long (700+ chapters). But this one's xianxia/cultivation so I guess you'll be more familiar with it.

God Level Summoner

This one's an e-sports/gaming novel. If you know The King's Avatar then GLS is like that except it's BL. I mean aside from the main cp there are lots of side cp/ships here. Also, this is the second of a three part series but you don't need to read the first or third book to understand since all three have different main charas (even games).

Little Mushroom

Okay, not gonna lie but this is probably the most...hmm, not exactly sad but depressing (??) book I've read. I can't explain it but the overall tone of the novel just gives you such desolate and hopeless feeling that it leaves you wondering if it'll really have a happy ending. But it is HE. I repeat, it's HE! Despite what I said, please do read it, it's really good!

Rebirth of a Supermodel

Another novel from one of my fav authors, Mo Chen Huan (The Earth is Online)! This is one a transmigration novel set in a modern (but parallel world) china specifically in the entertainment industry. MC is a model and ML is a designer. Anyway, this one is just a light read but I really like it.

Sha Po Lang

A work by Priest, a very popular author. This one is set in a ancient china but with steampunk! The plot is just amazing (except when some political stuff just fly over my head because i'm a dumdumb lol). Anyway, it's going to have a live action drama that will air next year (i think?). There's also an audio drama. (eng sub link: here)

Very Happy

A showbiz/entertainment novel. And just like it's title it's just light and full of fluff. Sometimes, it's nice to just read something fun and sweet.

Golden Stage

An enemies (?) to lovers trope set in ancient china. You would think it's slowburn but no, after getting married the cp just quickly settled in domestic bliss. But well, political intrigues just had to break their honeymoon (curse you emperor). At least, they'll have their HE after all that.

The Film Emperor’s Daily Live Cooking Broadcast

Okay, I may have rec this because of the food (and the accompanying pics doesn't help). It's a light read but it'll sure make you hungry.

The Seeing Eye Dog

One of the few novels that made me all teary-eyed. Halfway through the novel it's just angst with a little bit of sweet scattered in between. I never had this urge to root and hug a character so much. The MC deserves the best!

Guide on How to Fail at Online Dating

Another gaming novel though it's more casual and full of fluff & comedic misunderstandings aside from the short angst near the end but overall funny and romantic.

I am a news reporter with the Butterfree Bugle. I received a tip about a young lady who was found unconscious just outside the town limits of Pallet Town. She reportedly wandered out there in pursuit of "a strange noise."

I am currently attempting to contact this individual so that I might interview them for further details. I would greatly appreciate any help you could offer in tracking her down. The safety of the residents of Pallet Town are my top priority. Such news could serve to alert others to any potential problems or threats in the area.

Okay. I'll bite.

You want to hear my story, I'll tell you. But you may be disappointed. There really isn't much to tell.

It was late, like 9ish or something, the sun was about to set. I was outside with my Caterpie and my Kakuna, practicing moves. We were just in the grass right outside of town. Sometimes in the evenings I hear weird sounds coming from the distance. Like a cry of some sort, but strange . . . distorted. Almost sounds like something between a human and an animal-- I can never really tell which it is. My friends can never hear it, they tell me I'm nuts, but I know it's there. Also, sometimes I think I can see stuff moving out of the corner of my eye? But when I turn to look it disappears.

Well, the mystery had been bugging me for ages, and I was getting tired of my friends telling me I was crazy. And that night, I heard it again. It seemed to be coming from the field just past the fence. Actually, that often seems to be where the sound's coming from.

I don't know if you've been to Pallet Town before, but there's this tall, decorative fence that goes around most of the perimeter of the town, and a big abandoned field just past it. Nothing really out there but grass, but whenever we were young and we tried to climb the fence our parents yelled at us. Nobody was ever allowed to climb it, and we were told not go out there in the field. I guess it's private property or whatever. I'm honestly not sure. But I never see anyone out there. It's practically taboo around here to even joke about going out there.

It really wouldn't even have occurred to me to break that rule, if it hadn't been for the weird noises. I spent a while perched on top of the fence, listening, and waiting to see if anybody would come by. Nobody did, so I hopped down on the other side and made my way over to the grass.

Everything was fine and normal at first, but as I got closer, I started feeling a little lightheaded, and the sounds seemed to be growing louder and higher-pitched. Almost as if I could hear them inside my head. And then I reached the grass, and my vision went blurry and started to black out. I thought for a second that I saw . . . something. I'm not sure what. It's kind of jumbled in my mind.

Then I guess I passed out, because the next thing I remember is waking up at home in my bed. My parents were there, really worried. They said somebody spotted me as they were walking by, unconscious on the ground.

And that's about it.

You're a pokemon professor, so maybe you have some idea of what's hiding out there. Is it dangerous? My friends and family still tell me I'm imagining things.

I do not believe that you are simply imagining things. In fact, what you are describing is a phenomenon that has occured before. Typically it occurs when people wander too far outside a town or city limits. It does not always happen, of course, but there are certain locations . . . that seem to attract the phenomenon.

As to what's hiding out there, I may have some idea. I would like to ask: have you ever heard of glitch pokemon?

Dear June,

Allow me to give you a proper introduction and explanation.

As I said, I am Professor Ginkgo. I have a small lab on Cinnabar Island. To be more precise, there are a series of labs on Cinnabar Island housed under the same roof, and I rent a small space there.

I actually grew up in Viridian City and attended the same school as the pokemon professor in your town-- Professor Oak. We were once colleagues, in fact, along with our little circle of friends.

They were all so welcoming at first, and so supportive. We all helped each other and were quite close. Encouraged each other, learned from each other. I watched Oak get his research off the ground, uniting his interest in psychology and pokemon and developing his innovative Pokedex. I collaborated with Elm on some of his studies with pokemon breeding. I even had some of my work published in some very prestigious academic journals.

That all started to change once I started to progress further into my own research interests. Back then, I was studying Ghost-type pokemon. So much is still unknown about them. In particular, I had been investigating reports of a ghost that the Silph Scope had been unable to identify. It took many months, but eventually I encountered this creature myself. And what I experienced . . . I could not quite explain. During my struggles to understand, I uncovered some very obscure papers published in a very niche journal: they were about glitch pokemon.

The article's authors theorized about the existence of these creatures. Creatures with extraordinary features and powers, unlike anything we've ever seen before. Their underlying theory was that our world, and our very universe, can have certain points where the very fabric of reality is weakened, or . . . distorted. The very laws of nature can bend or even break at these points. And somehow, glitch pokemon can immerge from these points.

I realize this sounds remarkable and perhaps even unbelieveable. Yet the descriptions in these old papers aligned so well with my own observations and experiences. The more I pursued it, the more I learned, and the more I realized I was onto something big. Enormous. And incredibly important.

Unfortunately, my colleagues were not quite so open-minded. Even when I confronted them with the direct evidence that I had collected, they scoffed at my ideas and dismissed them as mere drivel. Crackpot theories and superstition, they told me. Journals refused to publish my work. Colleagues stopped collaborating with me. I was eventually ostracized by the entire academic community.

In my desperation I contacted the authors of the original articles I had found. It took time, but eventually I tracked them down. And here, in Cinnabar, I found a few scientists quietly studying glitch pokemon. It is here I have settled and devoted myself to my life's work.

I apologize for giving you such a lengthy personal history, but I thought it prudent to explain precisely where I'm coming from. It is important that you understand I am not just some quack or charlatan. I can tell you with certainty that glitch pokemon are very real and very incredible creatures. Just as Ghost type pokemon were once thought to be silly superstitious drivel, but were later revealed to be very real lifeforms that we could observe and capture-- thanks to the Silph Scope-- we are on the verge of another scientific epiphany.

However, we must also be very cautious. Over my years of study I have come to learn just how powerful glitch pokemon can be. They have the potential for a great deal of danger, as well, if mishandled. In the wrong hands, this could be devastating. This is why I must take so many precautions. It is also why my research is so crucial. We must come to understand these powerful creatures if we are to safely co-exist with them.

June, I believe you may be able to help me with my research. I don't wish to overwhelm you, but you spoke of frequently hearing strange sounds and seeing things you could not explain; things that nobody else seemed to notice. One of the things I have learned in my work is that not everyone seems to perceive glitch pokemon. It appears that only a select few are capable . . . or are willing. I am still uncertain as to why this is, but I suspect part of the reason is that glitch pokemon are usually very shy, ellusive creatures. It could be that something about you draws these pokemon to you, and makes them more willing to reveal themselves. In any case, the fact that you notice them at all is highly noteworthy. 

I'd like you to mull it over. You could contribute to some very important and meaningful work. And the fact of the matter is I am in desperate need of a field assistant. I may not have the popularity nor the generous funding of your local Professor Oak, but I can promise you the research will be exciting and interesting.

Honestly, I don't have much to do this summer and this whole glitch pokemon thing sounds really crazy but also . . . kinda cool? But I figured I should warn you. I'm not exactly a model pokemon trainer.

That shouldn't be a problem. Because of the need to be discrete about our research, I actually would actively discourage you from seeking out many battles for recreational purposes. It's best to keep a low profile.

Of course, I still would provide you with a pokemon to accomapy you during field research. It's simply a necessity in this modern day for anybody going out and about-- for guarding against unruly wild pokemon, for subduing potential research subjects for capture, for protection against any ruffians that may try to pull a Rattata out and try to mug you, etc.

In addition to the sheer practicality, though, I think it would present the perfect opportunity for you to start learning about and bonding with glitch pokemon right away. There's no better way to learn about something except first-hand, after all. It would be a formal part of your research to travel with such a companion.

Living W/ Immortality: Episode 1: I Have No Fucking Clue.

FADE IN:

EXT. STREET. DAY

NARRATOR (V.O)

Once upon a time, well fuck it this isn’t your average story. This story is every bit of complicated. The author has no clue whatsoever on how he puts this story together. I’ll just sit back and let the story tell itself and jump in whenever I feel like it. We start this story off… with a dog, a girl, and a two-faced immortal teen.

It’s a normal day, the sun is shining and the skies are clear. A boy with his backpack in hand leaves school and begins his walk home. Everything was going fine until a girl’s pet dog runs away from her.

RANDOM GIRL

Sparky! Get back here!

The girl gives chase over her dog. Managing to run faster than her owner. The dog passes FINN, which makes FINN stops in his track. He watches in silence and concern as the dog runs away. The girl rushes by FINN as well and shouts.

RANDOM GIRL

Sparky! Stop!

The girl runs after her dog again. FINN begins to feel increasingly concerned. He turns around and begins to talk to himself. FINN sighs. Another voice speaks and echoes to him.

MYSTERIOUS VOICE (ERIN)(V.O)

Its someone’s dog dude. She’ll be devastated if it died.

FINN

I’m tired. School was a drag.

MYSTERIOUS VOICE (ERIN)(V.O)

You know we can’t let a poor, innocent dog die. You both know we love dogs.

FINN turns around to and sees the dog still running from his owner. He sighs and puts his headphones on.

FINN

I hate it when you’re right.

MYSTERIOUS VOICE (ERIN)(V.O)

That. And the fact that we know each other too well.

FINN drops his bag on the sidewalk and pulls out his headphones from his bag then his phone from his pocket.

FINN

Erin?

ERIN (V.O)

Yo?

FINN

Music preference? 50s? 60s? 70s? 80s? Or 90s?

ERIN (V.O)

70s.

FINN

1973?

ERIN (V.O)

Yup.

FINN

Elton John?

ERIN (V.O)

Crocodile Rock.

FINN smiles.

FINN

Nice choice.

FINN puts on his headphones and presses the play button on his phone. The song “Crocodile Rock” by Elton John. He begins to slowly walk then begins to speed walk. He starts to run faster and faster.

He manages to pass the girl who was out of breath after chasing her dog for so long. Close near the dog, FINN still on the sidewalk jumps over a parked car. He attempts to grab the dog but slips on a rock and fails to grab him in time. He slides on the road for a few seconds.

FINN

Ow.

He gets up wiping away the dirt of the road off his clothes and wipes the right side of his cheek.

(Camera shows a huge spot of blood on his right hand he then clutches his hand to cover the blood.)

(Camera shows a huge scrape on his cheek, it heals instantly heals.)

FINN

Quick little bastard.

FINN smiles and starts running again. In the distance, an incoming car drives in. Which the mysterious voice notices.

ERIN (V.O)

Finn! There’s a car coming!

FINN

Shit!

(He stops all of sudden.)

FINN blinks and his eyes see a clear view of the driver. The driver is distracted because he’s on his phone.

FINN

He’s on his phone so he won’t notice anything.

FINN starts to run again. The dog eventually runs into the street and without warning an oncoming car approaches.

FINN

Dammit!

The girl had finally regained some breath and sees Finn running after her dog. She then noticed the car. Making her shocked and worried he wouldn’t be able to make it in time.

FINN

He’s too close. I have to take the hit for the dog.

ERIN (V.O)

Dude… I think the girl saw you, we have to use our powers without drawing their attention.

FINN

Fuck! We keep going!

The car is close by, the driver doesn’t notice the dog until the very last minute. He steps on the brake as soon as he instantly sees the dog. The driver had closed his eyes to save himself from the horror. The girl calls out her dog’s name one last time.

RANDOM GIRL

Sparky!

She closes her eyes as well. FINN had finally reached the dog and picks him up. Mere seconds from being hit by the car. He says one last remark.

FINN

Fuck.

He turns around quickly to shield the dog from the impact. The car hits FINN sending him a few feet away. On the ground, he landed face first. “Crocodile Rock” stops playing.

(Camera shows more scraps on his face but it heals instantly as he wakes up suddenly)

He turns on his back groaning in pain. He looks at the dog with this annoyed and who is safe in his arms.

FINN

You are so lucky I chose to save you.

The dog licks his face as a form of thank you.

FINN

You’re welcome.

(FINN smiles while his face is licked.)

The girl and the driver had closed their eyes from what they would soon see would be a dog splattered everywhere. Once hearing the thud, they opened their eyes only to find a FINN holding the dog safe and sound. Without a word, he stands up and gives an awkward smile. Both the girl and the driver rush toward FINN.

ERIN (V.O)

Remember to fake your injuries.

FINN nods and gets up while pretending to be hurt. Standing up with somewhat of a limp and cracking his neck.

FINN

Ow. Ow. Ow.

(He says repeatedly as he gets up)

The driver gets out of his car to check on FINN as well as the girl.

DRIVER

Oh my god! Are you okay?

FINN nods “yes” in response.

RANDOM GIRL

You saved my dog from getting hit. Thank you! But are you okay?!

DRIVER

Yeah, kid, you took a pretty hard hit from my car. Something’s got to be broken, bruised, or scratched.

FINN

It’s fine, I heal pretty fast…  Don’t worry, about it.

RANDOM GIRL

You should at least go to the hospital.

FINN

It’s alright. My mom’s a nurse, she knows what to do.

FINN hands the dog back to the girl. Leaving them confused. He walks away with his fake limping and gets back to his backpack. (The camera facing FINN from the front) He hides behind a car and unzips his jacket revealing a bloodstained shirt.

FINN

Oh yeah. Something broke. Crap. My favorite shirt.

ERIN

Quit your whining dumbass. It’s just a shirt. Let’s go home now.

FINN

I hate you. You know that right?

ERIN

Heard it over a hundred times.

He looks at it for a bit and ignores it. He zips his jacket back up and grabs his bag. He continues to go on his way. FINN groans in annoyance.

NARRATOR (V.O)

Note to self, “Add music in this story.”

FINN (V.O)

When you have supernatural powers, the impossible becomes possible.  My name is Finn Evers and I have immortal superpowers. Seventeen years ago, an ordinary couple gave birth to a not so ordinary baby boy.

(Camera shows FINN as he walks home)

NARRATOR (V.O)

Wait… how the fuck?! Who gave this kid narrating powers?!

Shows flashback showing a baby FINN in a crib with his parents looking from above.

FLASHBACKS TO FINN’S CHILDHOOD.

FINN (V.O)

My intelligence had increased quickly when I was 15 days old. Also, I began to talk.

Baby FINN begins to say words to his parents.

FINN (Baby)

Mom! Dad! I’m hungry!

MOM & DAD look at their child as he spoke his first sentence at 15 days old.

NARRATOR (V.O)

This is my job! I’m supposed to be telling the story!

FINN (V.O)

Soon afterward, I started walking at 1 month old.

Baby FINN starts walking on his own.

FINN (V.O)

And at 1 year old, I punched my dad in the face for the first time.

Baby FINN clenching a fist while his DAD is knocked out on the ground. DAD groaning in pain.

NARRATOR (V.O)

THE FUCKIN AUTHOR! Really?! You write me one job to do and you replace me with the main character?!

FINN (V.O)

Eventually, when I reached elementary I used my power recklessly. The playground was the throne of every kindergarten class. I fought my way to the top with my powers. I eventually got the spotlight on me and it took a while for things to die down.

Shows flashback of toddler FINN with a paper crown on his head. Standing at the top of the playground like a king.

CUTS TO:

BACK TO FINN STILL WALKING.

FINN (V.O)

After a year of all that, my parents thought I was just a super strong and smart boy. My parents are pretty weird themselves so they accepted my powers without worry. That was until the day of the accident. I don’t really like talking about it… but it’s how I learned I was immortal. It was enough trauma to create Erin, the alternate personality who exists in my head.  

FINN (V.O) (CONT’D)

So time rolled on, I became the person you see now, a high school student. As you saw with the dog, I still have my powers. I can heal fast like any immortal, and my body is supernaturally conditioned. My life is a dream come true. That is what you’re thinking right?

FINN (V.O) (CONT’D)

Well, let me tell you the truth. Healing fast only gets my clothes stained by blood and being immensely strong just breaks anything around me. He’s the happiest boy alive, that boy has everything! Well, you’re dead wrong! I’m the un-happiest boy alive! A boy who has nothing!

FINN (V.O) (CONT’D)

Regenerative Healing, Immunity, Enhanced Senses and Condition, Accelerated Probability, Semi-telepathy, etcetera etcetera. I can do all those things, but having powers like that takes away something away. Like when a parent spoils their child and fails to be a fully functioning adult.

Shows different scenes of him using his different abilities.

FINN (V.O) (CONT’D)

In this way, my immortality has taken away certain things for me. My sense of being normal, the sensation of feeling pain. Me caring about my own life, hard work. It’s all so foreign to me. It’s true that I never get angry or sad about it’s just that I don’t feel any happiness or thrill in my life. But to look on the bright side, less drama will mean things will be peaceful for me.

FINN (V.O) (CONT’D)

Although with the existence of Erin in my head. we’re constantly at odds. He’s like my brother but he’s always there in the back of my head to annoy me.

FINN (V.O) (CONT’D)

For me, these powers took away my sense of being normal. Being a god in a sense is everything I don’t want to be. At the end living forever just means I get to see everyone I love die. I’m the unhappiest boy alive because I do get to live forever.

ERIN takes over the voice over.

ERIN (V.O)

Since Finn did his introduction, it’s my turn I guess.

NARRATOR (V.O) Really? They gave narrating powers to the asshole in his head?!

ERIN (V.O)

My name is Erin Nitty and I have immortal superpowers too. One day a kid had got into an accident and thus I was born. Surprisingly when I was created, his immortal powers affected me too. I was born as a 5-year-old and I grew with him.

ERIN (V.O) (CONT’D)

Eventually, as our powers grew, we managed to figure out some things I was capable of doing. I was able to physically take over his body.

ERIN (V.O) (CONT’D)

We’re in our teen years now and I got to say. We hate each other’s guts, just like every other sibling. I get so annoyed by this idiot every time we’re in a situation. We’re alike but he doesn’t listen to shit when I’m helping him out.

ERIN (V.O) (CONT’D)

But one of the few things we agree on are these powers. Living forever, being a god and all that. It’s not really the happy life, ya know? Like what the moron said, I’m unhappy because I do get to live forever.

FINN/ERIN finally returns home after that ordeal with the dog.  

FINN

Mom! We’re home!

He goes to his room and sets his backpack down. He takes off his shirt and looks at the blood stain. He looks over to a pile of shirts also stained with blood.

ERIN (V.O)

Mom’s gonna kill you. You know she hates having to wash your blood stained shirts right?

FINN sighs.

FINN

I know she does. Frankly, I hate it when she does have to wash them. You know she’s scared whenever she sees them.

ERIN (V.O)

What’s she scared about?

FINN

That one day, we might die and never come home.

Silence fills the room as both ERIN and FINN contemplate the thought.

ERIN

That’s never going to happen.

FINN

I hope it never does.

FINN crushes the shirt and grabbed the pile of other stained shirts and brings them to the washing machine. He returns to his room and takes a nap until it reaches night time. It’s now dinner time and both FINN’S parents are home.

NARRATOR (V.O)

Oh boy, the parents. There an odd couple… like a couple from a Japanese anime… but somehow and for some reason, they were chosen to raise a reincarnated immortal.

MOM

Finn! Time for dinner!

He wakes up tired and groggy, he puts on a shirt and comes downstairs to the dinner table.

FINN

Hi momma.

MOM

Hi sweetie.

Dinner is all set, hot and ready then DAD comes home and joins them.

FINN

Hi dad.

DAD

Hey son. Honey…

DAD sits down on the dinner table. MOM doesn’t say a word, only showing a scowling face toward DAD. FINN looked at both his parents knowing there’s a fight going to ensue.

FINN (V.O)

These are our parents. Dad is a hard worker but he tends to get on my nerves. Mom is a loving and caring soul.

MOM & DAD start a fight and it escalates to yelling. FINN sits down unphased and seemingly just annoyed with the fighting.

FINN (V.O)

They used to be so passionate about each other. I wonder what happened to set them both off.

DAD

I hate you so much!

MOM

My hate for you is bigger than the ocean!

MOM & DAD fighting in the background, while FINN is eating on his own.

FINN (V.O)

They’re still passionate… just in a different way.

They’ve been going at each other like this for half a year now.

DAD

Hey, son. Can you please use your powers to help daddy?

MOM holds FINN’S hand and looks at him with a loving face.

MOM

Finn, remember what I said, Never use your powers for evil. Only help those in need.

FINN (V.O)

Mom’s loving and a caring soul is the reason that I don’t recklessly use my powers or use them for evil.

MOM

But please feel free to hurt your daddy for mommy right now.

FINN (V.O)

Also, she has a dark side herself, which scares me a lot…

MOM & DAD return to their fight and it escalates to throwing things around and being more physical.

FINN (V.O)

Don’t be fooled by this, their fights are pointless. Why, do I say it’s pointless? This is why.

FINN’S pupils glow a blue tinge.

MOM

I hate you!

MOM (V.O)

That’s not true! I love you very much!

MOM’S thought echoes in the back of her head.

DAD

I don’t want anything to do with you!

DAD (V.O)

That’s a lie, I love you too much to say that!

DAD’S thought echoes in the back of his head. FINN finally intervenes due to annoyance. MOM recklessly decided to throw a knife, which FINN catches the knife stabs into his hand. Both MOM & DAD are shocked by what just happened. FINN is unphased due to his abilities.

FINN

(sighs)

FINN pulls out the knife and his wound instantly heals. He puts the knife on the table and looks at both his parents with an angry face. His eyes glow the blue tinge.

MOM & DAD (V.O)

I love you.

Both MOM & DAD’S faces become shocked by what they heard.

DAD

Did you say you love me?

MOM

No, you said it.

(V.O)

Did he hear me say I love him?

DAD (V.O)

Did she really hear me say I love her?

FINN (V.O)

If you’re wondering what’s happening, I linked their minds together. It’s an application of my power called Immortal Cloning. I could transport my mind into a clone of myself or in an object or someone lacking a soul. It also gave me a form of telepathy.

NARRATOR(V.O)

Not gonna lie, this scene is pretty funny.

Both realizing FINN had something to do with it. They turn toward him.

MOM & DAD

Finn!

Still sitting at the dinner table, FINN turns his head to his parents and smiles like he’s innocent.

FINN

Yes?

DAD

Why do I hear your mom’s thoughts?

FINN

I used telepathy to link both your minds…

DAD’S face lit up in shock.

DAD

When did you develop telepathy?!

FINN

Growing up led to new abilities… and telepathy happened since… uh, age 10?

MOM

TURN IT OFF RIGHT NOW! I DON’T WANT YOUR FATHER TO KNOW I STILL LOVE HIM!

(She shouts)

DAD

You still love me?

MOM

Do you love me?

They instantly hug and make up from their fight.

ERIN (V.O)

Good grief, it took them that long to settle things? Jesus Christ.

FINN(V.O)

I know, our parents are weird.

NARRATOR (V.O)

Very weird indeed.

FINN (V.O)

Did you say something?

ERIN (V.O)

No, why?

FINN (V.O)

I swear I heard another voice… Just forget it.

FINN smiles at the sight that his parent’s made up.

FINN

Finally. I can go back to dinner in peace.

MOM

Let’s celebrate with some ice cream!

FINN was about to dig in his dessert being it was his favorite flavor of ice cream, Cookies, and Rocky Road Cream. MOM grabs the ice cream from his grip and two spoons.

FINN (V.O)

MY ICE CREAM?!

FINN smiles like a crazy person. Then looks at both his parents eating his ice cream.

ERIN (V.O)

Oh shit.

FINN’S eyes burn with fire red.

CUT TO:

NEXT DAY. - DAY.

FINN walks into his school and goes to his first class of the day. He enters his classroom and sits at his desk, waiting for class to begin.

FINN (V.O)

Welcome to my high school, Campbell High. It’s not much but in my class over a 1,000 students are in attendance that roams the grounds of the school.

Two classmates sit next to FINN.  

CLASSMATE 1

Hey Finn!

FINN is silent and simply replies with a nod.

CLASSMATE 2

Hey buddies!

FINN (V.O)

These are my friends Athena and Taven, or at least they consider me as their friend. I try my best to distance myself from having any friends. But somehow it’s like they’re attracted to me somehow.

TAVEN

What did you guys do over the weekend?

FINN

Played a new game… some guy named Crank killed me with a sword.

ATHENA

I just listened to music all day and went to the beach.

FINN

I got hit by a car when I was going home on Friday.

FINN (V.O)

To be perfectly honest, they’re actually great friends. They’re just difficult to be around because… they have interesting personalities.

TAVEN & ATHENA

Are you okay?! What happened?!

FINN

I’m fine. I’m fine don’t worry. I saved a dog too from being hit by the car.

TAVEN

Damn, dude. Hope you feel better.

KEN looks toward FINN but he is missing from his seat.

TAVEN

Finn? Where’d he go?

CUT TO:

BOYS BATHROOM.

FINN (V.O)

As much as I have tolerance for the two of them. I was tired of talking about it.

FINN (V.O)(cont’d)

It’s not that I hate Taven it’s just he always tends to get me into situations that I don’t want to be in. There was that one time he could got me into a competition for arm wrestling and I hated every second of it. But I am competitive and immensely strong so I won that competition. He also gives me anxiety and stress.

FINN (V.O) (cont’d)

Athena’s actually pretty fine… but she does ask me for snacks constantly and usually doesn’t pay me back. She’s a good friend but I’ve lost a lot of money over simple snacks.

ERIN (V.O)

(sighs)

It’s gonna be a long day again isn’t it?

FINN

Yup.

FINN walks out of the bathroom. A montage of going through classes begin. Looking tired and falling asleep. The day goes by fast and FINN manages to make it through the school.

FINN walks out of his last class of the day. He looks tired and like something died inside.

FINN

Fuck I’m tired… I want to die so bad.

ERIN (V.O)

Well, unfortunately, we can’t.

FINN

God that teacher just talks forever and ever.

ERIN (V.O)

She keeps picking me to answer a fuckin question I don’t even know! PICK SOMEONE ELSE GODDAMMIT! She also keeps talking like she’s saying a code or a riddle. Some shit like that.

FINN

Don’t get me started on Taven! We had to do the jeopardy competition and he kept rushing me to find the answers!

FINN holds his face with both hands and rubs away the tiredness. He begins to walk toward the stairs but there are a bunch of students blocking the entrance.

FINN

Fuck there’s too many people walking down the stairs.

ERIN (V.O)

Jump off the second floor then.

FINN

You’re right!

ERIN (V.O)

What?

FINN

I’m gonna jump off the second floor.

ERIN (V.O)

I was kidding. Please don’t.

FINN looks around the corner of the hallway and runs then jumps off the second floor of the building. He lands on his feet.  

FINN

(Breaths in and out)

Suckers.

He blinks for a second as he starts his walk but then bumps into a girl. Instantly embarrassed by this, he apologizes immediately.

FINN

I am so sorry, are you okay?

GIRL

Yeah, I’m fine, thank you.

The GIRL turns around to see FINN and he recognizes her.

FINN

No… friggin way. Serena?!

SERENA

Finn?!

Unable to say another word, FINN hugs her instantly. SERENA accepts the hug without worry. FINN is seemingly different when seeing SERENA. He’s not annoyed by her presence.

NARRATOR (V.O)

Interesting, a love story…  

FINN

I haven’t seen you in so long! Where’ve you been?! It’s been like friggin years, dude!

SERENA

You know dude, moved around here and there but my family decided to move back to Hawaii. It’s home ya know? Anyways how’ve you been?! I haven’t seen my best friend in years!

FINN

I’ve been good… if that’s the word to describe it. Nothing much interesting happened in my life so far.

ERIN (V.O)

I missed her too.

SERENA

That’s good to hear, but you haven’t done anything interesting?

FINN

Ever since you’ve been gone, I just kinda stopped doing anything.

SERENA

Aw, that’s cute, you waited for me.

FINN’S face blushed for a bit and he smiles.

FINN

I guess I did wait for you to come back. Yeah.

(Laughs a little)

SERENA laughs at the remark and smiles too.

SERENA

Well, since I’m home, we can hang out again. So that way you can start doing things again.

FINN laughs and nods,

FINN

Agreed. Pinky promise?

He holds out his pinky and she smiles and makes the pinky promise official.

SERENA

Pinky promise.

(She smiles)

SERENA (cont’d)

You haven’t changed at all, have you?

FINN

Never.

(He smiles)

Want to walk home together?

SERENA

I’d love that. Let’s go.

FINN & SERENA are walking down the street from the school. They begin to talk about recent events.

SERENA

You saved a dog?!

(She is shocked)

FINN

Yup.

SERENA

And you got hit by the car that was about to hit the dog? How are you even alive?

FINN

I… uh… I heal very fast.

(He laughs)

NARRATOR (V.O)

Ugh, boring… hm, let’s add some flair to this act. AND… Snap!

Suddenly a gang of punk boys shows up around the corner. They looked straight out of the movie Grease for some reason. But they looked like a bunch of a-holes.

FINN (V.O)

Anything happens to you on the while you’re on the mainland?

SERENA

I met a Flat Earther… dude was friggin weird. Went to a concert for Punchbowl Punk… you know that band right? There from Hawaii.

FINN

I don’t think I ever heard of them before but I will definitely look them up. Thanks for that, I love looking up new music to listen too.

SERENA

Uh, what else… I met a girl who apparently has a talking cat.

PUNK LEADER

Howzit!

FINN & SERENA had noticed them, FINN waves hello and they keep walking.

FINN

Oh, speaking of music. Ya got earphones?

SERENA pulls out earphones from her pocket. FINN plugs in the audio jack and gives one earphone to SERENA. The song “Just The Two Of Us” by Grover Washington Jr. begins to play in the earphones.

FINN smiles and bobs his head along to the musical intro. SERENA smiles too at FINN. He starts to sing along.

FINN

I see the crystal raindrops fall and the beauty of it all. Is when the sun comes shining through. To make those rainbows in my mind. When I think of you some time. I wanna spend some time with you.

SERENA

You’re adorable.

The statement makes FINN blushes a bit. But starts to dance to the song. Which SERENA proceeds to dance along.

NARRATOR (V.O)

As much as I hate to interrupt a good song and people having a good time. It’s time I ruined this and start the problem.

Song still plays in the background and FINN & SERENA are still dancing along.

NARRATOR (V.O) (cont’d)

Psst. White guy!

PUNK LEADER

God?

LUCIAN/NARRATOR (V.O)

Sorry, not him. Different guy. My name’s Lucian by the way. I need you to throw a rock at that kid’s head. The one that just passed by you.

PUNK LEADER

That’s not cool, Luci dude. Plus I don’t take orders from a disembodied voice… unless his name is God.

LUCIAN/NARRATOR (V.O)

He said your jacket looks stupid.

PUNK LEADER

I WILL ANNIHILATE HIM!

The PUNK LEADER picks up a small rock and throws it at the back of FINN’S head. Instantly hitting him, he feels the hit and holds where the pain is. The song stops at the end of the 2nd Refrain. ERIN boils in anger and takes over FINN’S body. ERIN turns around toward the punks.

His eyes change from green to purple and a streak of jet black hair appears which SERENA doesn’t notice.

LUCIAN/NARRATOR (V.O)

Three. Two. One.

ERIN

WHAT THE HELL IS YOUR PROBLEM?!

The song stops playing

PUNK LEADER

You called my jacket stupid!

ERIN

What!?

PUNK LEADER

No one calls my jacket stupid!

ERIN

So you thought to throw a rock at me?! I wasn’t thinking that before, but now that I’m looking at it. It’s being worn by a jackass.

PUNK LEADER

No one insults me and gets away with it.

LUCIAN/NARRATOR (V.O)

Now add some music… hm, what song though? Got it! Snap!

ERIN looks at his phone and takes out the earphones. He put the phone to max volume and presses the play button. He sets it down on a nearby wall. The song “Johnny B. Goode” by Chuck Berry plays. Easily tempered, ERIN snaps and starts the fight.

He rushes toward the PUNK LEADER grabbing him by his shirt and shoves him against a wall. The other punks decide to jump in and help out their PUNK LEADER. SERENA watches as the fight ensues, worried that her friend might get hurt. She attempts to call the police.

NARRATOR (V.O)

God, I love a good fight.

One of the punks goes after her, which FINN notices and it angers both him and ERIN. He shakes off the four punks trying to pull him off their leader. He rushes toward the punk that goes after SERENA. She manages to hold her own and gets a few punches in.

ERIN

Dope.

ERIN smiles at the fact but is attacked again by the punks. He starts up another fight. ERIN & FINN work together to beat each one.

FINN (V.O)

Okay, five jackasses. This should be easy for you.

ERIN (V.O)

Yup.

ERIN rushes at them all at once, managing to shove another PUNK 1 into a wall. PUNK 2 having a garrote wire chokes him to pulls him back. While being choked he jump kicks PUNK 1 knocking him out. Falling to the ground, he gets kicked repeatedly by PUNK 2. Grabbing his foot, he punches his leg repeatedly until a bone had broke.

PUNK 2 falls to the ground in pain. PUNK 3 had a baseball bat in hand all of sudden.

ERIN

Okay… where the hell did you get that?

PUNK 3 doesn’t answer and immediately swings it. Which ERIN grabs before being hit in the face. ERIN grabs the bat and hits his stomach with the knob. ERIN looks at PUNK 4. Afraid, he holds his hands up.

PUNK 4

I don’t know why I hang around with them. Their idiots. I’ll… I’ll just go home, think about my life, reevaluate my goals.

ERIN

Go!

PUNK 4

Yes, sir.

While PUNK 4 leaves, ERIN doesn’t notice the PUNK LEADER with a knife in hand. The song ends at the end of the 3rd Verse. They switch places, ERIN’S purple eyes revert to FINN’S green eyes. The streak of jet black hair reverted back to its brown color. SERENA had rushed toward him, suddenly a feeling of pain surges through his body.

FINN screams in pain loudly while holding his arm where the knife is buried. He’s kneeling on the ground.

SERENA

(Worried tone)

Finn! Are you okay?!

(She notices the knife buried in his shoulder)

Oh my god!

FINN

I’ll be fine. I promise.

(He reassures her while laughing.)

SERENA

You’re laughing?!

FINN

It’s how I deal with pain…

ERIN (V.O)

What’s happening?!

He pulls out the knife but suddenly feels the sensation of pain. Both FINN & ERIN make a low sounding grunt in silence, due to the shock of this feeling. He secretly cuts his hand and clenches his fist… holding in his roar of pain.

FINN (V.O)

Our healing factor… it’s gone. I can feel this…

SERENA

We have to get you home!

She picks him up and carries him over his arm. They grab their belongings and immediately rush to FINN’S house. They rush in and SERENA calls out to MOM & DAD.

SERENA

Uncle! Auntie!

FINN

MOM! DAD!

They rush to find out what’s wrong and see FINN bleeding and wounded.

MOM

Serena?!

SERENA

Auntie! We got jumped by some guys and Finn fought them and one of them pulled a knife on him. And…

She gets hysterical and doesn’t know what to do. FINN’S DAD calms her down.

DAD

Sweetie. It’s okay. I’m gonna take you home now okay?

SERENA

Will Finn be okay?!

DAD

He will be sweetie. Your auntie’s a nurse. She’ll patch him quickly and he’ll be fine. I’m gonna take you home now.

DAD & SERENA leave the house and MOM looks at FINN’S wound. He explains what happened and is for the first time scared for his life. MOM became worried after hearing his explanation. His wounds instantly heal once again after a couple minutes had gone by.

FINN

Erin? What the hell just happened?

(Finn looks at his hand cut as it healed)

ERIN (V.O)

I have no fucking clue.

(He sounded worried)

MY BABIES !!! okay so for anyone that doesn’t know, Rune Factory is a spin off series to the Marvelous brand Harvest Moon games. Literally the subtitle is “A Fantasy Harvest Moon” SO YEAH. VERY MUCH DERIVED FROM HM. But it’s also SO MUCH MORE OKAY so they like.... take the farming and marriage aspects from HM, but then also throw in standard RPG shit like fighting and dungeons and A WHOLE BUTT LOAD OF STORY. Seriously, they’re fantastic games and I urge you all to play them, especially Rune Factory 4 which is where my darling muses Doug & Frey are from.

This got long so the rest is under the cut . . . Also please note that this WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS for Rune Factory 4 !!

F R E Y

We’ll start with Frey since I’m feeling a LOT of muse for her right now ( I still need to write that starter from her for Mipha it’s literally in my drafts I’m just so BUSY h e c k ). This is she:

Super cute right ? Well she’s the female protagonist for RF4 ( Side Note: RF4 was the first RF game where you could choose what gender to play as at the very beginning !! ) In the game, she’s tasked with guarding these things called the Rune Spheres & bringing them to Selphia ( the setting of the game ) to save the Divine Dragon that resides there. On the way she gets attacked by members of the Sechs Empire ( the antagonists for . . . pretty much all of the RF games ) which leads to her FALLING FROM AN AIR SHIP, landing DIRECTLY on the dragon she’s on the way to see, and losing all of her memories outside of her name. She’s then mistaken as the princess that was said to be coming to visit from the kingdom of Norad ( Selphia is a city within that kingdom ). She denies this, and it eventually turns out that she is not, in fact, a memory of the royal family because the ACTUAL PRINCE shows up like the next day. But he wants to be able to do his own shit so he allows Frey to continue w/ the princess-y duties that she’s been doing & allows her to continue staying in the castle along w/ the Divine Dragon. SO ANYWAY W/ THE BACKSTORY OUT OF THE WAY, a quick crash course through the rest is that she becomes best friends with the Divine Dragon, goes through dungeons to help solve mysteries plaguing the town, saves these 4 people known as the Guardians who were trapped as boss monsters within those dungeons, and then goes on a journey to save her new dragon BFF from literally dying. IT’S WILD.

Even though she’s a protagonist, she isn’t necessarily an avatar. Frey has her own dialogue, and thus her own personality. She’s an incredibly passionate, determined young woman who isn’t one to let things get her down. She’s spunky with a dry wit, finding plenty of humor in the enigmatic cast that makes up the other residents of Selphia. She flows to the beat of her own drum, and as such can seem rather passive. Her determination can also be seen as a reckless sort of stubbornness, and sometimes she does things despite being told not to. She’s also known as something called an Earthmate, which means she has a very strong connection to the Earth, and is able to see / communicate with the spirits that reside there. It is also what gives her the power to transform the Guardians back into their human forms. OVERALL SHE’S JUST NEAT AND SPUNKY AND I LIKE HER A LOT.

Of your muses I could see her getting along really well with: Kairi, Demyx, Mipha, Denki, Momo, Shiho, and Cindy !!

D O U G

Doug is the absolute light of my LIFE okay. He was one of the first muses I ever consistently played, so him and I have been through the RINGER together. This is his stupid face:

Doug is played off as being the comic relief character, but in truth he is one of the most important characters with arguably the darkest storyline in possibly the entire franchise. In the Rune Factory universe, Doug is a dwarf, which is a race that lives primarily in clans. Doug grew up in Clan Silvershield which was like . . . just on the outskirts of the Sechs Empire. WELL the Sechs came in and absolutely desecrated his village. Doug was away at the time, probably playing in the nearby woods. When he came back, everything was on fire and everyone was dead, including his family. At this point, the Sechs found him and ‘took him in’. From then they brainwashed him into believing the Divine Dragon in Selphia was the one who destroyed his village. He agreed to go to Selphia to spy for the Sechs, believing that doing so would give him the opportunity to avenge his family. He arrived there sullen, just a husk of what we see of him in game, and is then taken in by an elderly young woman named Blossom who raised him from that point on. With her and the warmth of the other villagers, his walls dropped and he became the friendly, outgoing, hot-headed boy we see today. That said, shit still goes down and he has to eventually learn that it was not Ventuswill that destroyed his village, but the Sechs themselves. He literally spends an entire arc as an opposing force and juST GHOSTS YOU FOR A WHILE. Did I mention that he’s a marriageable candidate ? Cuz he is, but you literally can’t marry him until you BEAT THE ENTIRE GAME.

Anyway yeah, I love this stupid boy. He loves food, but specifically hates bread. Thinks it’s the worst thing to ever grace the Earth ( can’t relate but ok ). He’s absolutely an act first think later type in all senses of the word, doing stupid, reckless shit & saying things without thinking which ends up upsetting people. That said !! While the game tries to make you think that he is, Doug is NOT an idiot. There’s literally a part early on in the game where he saves the protagonist from getting jumped by monsters, and then teaches her magic & lectures her about she needs to be more aware of her surroundings. He’s not the type to get an A on a math test, but he’s unbelievably street smart. He’s got some insecurities about being dwarf who can’t forge, but despite that he still tries to when it’s important ( ie his reverse proposal ). He’s a smart mouth with no respect for authority, but he shows how much he cares through his actions. He worries about Blossom as though she truly was his family. He has a rivalry with another member of the town, but still sends him birthday presents for his birthday. He’s !! So good !! I’m very soft for Doug of Clan Silvershield !!
