Red Flag Words when discussing Autism

A quick (probably not comprehensive) list of words that raise red flags when people use them while discussing Autism. These aren't quite dog whistles because they're often not used knowing the full implications or with mal intent. But I think it's still important to talk about them.

Cure: There is not and never will be a cure for Autism. Autism is a neurotype, meaning it's just the way some people's brains are. No amount of research will change that. Modern day "cure" research goes towards prenatal detection of Autism. Simply put, it's eugenics.

Highfunctioning/Lowfunctioning: Autism is a spectrum and not a scale. The functioning labels only serve to separate Autistics into categories based on how useful their traits are for neurotypical society. It's a system literally developed by a man named Hans Asperger who worked with Nazis. At the time, Autistics who were deemed low functioning were murdered. To this day "low functioning" Autistics are afforded fewer human rights than "high functioning" Autistics. The 'support needs' labels are more helpful and less harmful, but in general Autistics' needs should be assessed and provided for on an individual level. Any attempt at categorization will lead to needs not being met and division in the community.

Asperger's/Asperger's Syndrome: This is an outdated diagnosis for "high functioning" Autistics. It has all the same problems as above but with the addition of being named after a man who murdered Autistics. All around Bad.

Same Food: another outdated term. This one isn't terrible and honestly I myself only discovered the alternative 'Safe Food' (i'm an old Autistic ok, sue me). the term 'Safe Food' normalizes Autistic behaviors, because it shows it's about the food being something safe for us to lean on rather than just a "weird" habit.

Idiot Savant: both a term an outdated trope. I myself use the term idiot savant to refer to the trope because I don't want to soften media that is putting forth harmful, stereotypical, representation. When referring to actual people, however, the term 'Savant Syndrome' should be used instead for obvious reasons.

Starchild: This one is a big red flag. Not everyone who uses it knows its relation to white supremacy but it's the beginning of a pipeline so tread carefully. In general any reference to Autistic people being superior to other neurotypes (that's not a joke) is a red flag. Sometimes it's out of frustration but it's also part of an alt-right movement.

Differently Abled/Super powers/etc: Patronizing as all hell. Autistic people are no more or less capable than other neurotypes. Just treat as normal people, because we are.

Puzzle Piece and Autism Speaks: Autism Speaks is an Autism hate group. They spread negative propaganda about people with Autism and have worked with people who have talked on camera about killing their Autistic children. They also take donations under false pretenses, with pretty much none of it going to actually help Autistics and their families. The puzzle piece is the symbol of Autism Speaks which is bad enough on its own but it also symbolizes the "missing piece" which implies Autistics are incomplete.
