HERE YOU GO

I ACTUALLY MADE IT SORRY
Tumblr media
Two things-
1. Sorry about Iroh 😭 I drew this yesterday while in church and didn't wanna be that one person looking up cartoon characters on their phone during the sermon so I kinda had to just go off of what I remembered. At this point, I'm just trying to go for 'vaguely recognisable' 😂
2. I just imagine that even though Iroh is king of keeping his cool, there had to be some point at which he loses it, and this seemed like that kind of a moment 🤣
P.S. Sorry about how the paper is warping in the pic. I suppose I could have used my IPad... I just felt like using paper IG

On pain of death, Zuko would never admit how much he enjoyed his drama class. He had inherited his mother's love of theater, but without her around to defend his cause, Zuko's reluctance to court any more of his father's disapproval kept him from auditioning for any plays during his high school career, even after moving in with his uncle two years earlier. This was different, though. This was a required class. Zuko had somehow made it to his senior year without fulfilling his arts credit, and he wouldn't be able to graduate without it. That he skipped over art, sculpting and creative writing didn't seem worth mentioning.
Zuko slipped into the first day of class just before the bell rang and took a seat at the back of the room. No one paid him any attention, which was just fine with him, honestly. The teacher showed up a few moments later, in a swirl of soft pinks and purples. The cheerful colors belied the stern set of her mouth, the sardonic shade of her eyes and the carefully coiffed steel grey hair on her head. She smiled- thought it looked more like a smirk- and began class.
"Good morning class!" she said in a booming voice. "You may call me Aunt Wu. I'll be teaching you the dramatic arts. This isn't my regular class, but since this school is operated on a shoe-string budget and the hopes and dreams of students, they were unable to fix the burst water pipe in my room. I suppose this soulless dungeon will have to do." She looked around the classroom distastefully before turning back to the class. "To begin with, I abhor the layout of the desks. Please move yourselves into a semi- circle." Aunt Wu clapped twice and motioned for everyone to move quickly.
That first week was spent on basic exercises and icebreakers. Despite himself, Zuko found himself getting to know his classmates, something he'd managed to avoid for his entire high school career. A few of them had been at the periphery of his notice-Sokka and Suki had been in several of Zuko's classes for most of the last four years. Aang, the only freshman in the class, had been determined to make Zuko his best friend ever since they had been introduced the previous summer by Toph, Zuko's neighbor, and the only person he could claim he knew at all. Then there was Katara. She was a grade under him and her brother Sokka, but somehow they'd found themselves at odds with each other almost immediately when she'd started high school. Things had settled into cold politeness between them, but now that they had a class together, the old friction was starting to return. Aunt Wu noticed it with interest, and she paired them very often for short scenes, complimenting their natural chemistry. Even Zuko had to admit there was an easy connection when they performed that he didn't have with anyone else in the class.
At the beginning of the second week, Aunt Wu announced that the real work was about to begin. They were to begin working on scenes from a play to present to the class at the end of the year. Aunt Wu would pick partners. Aang and Toph, the youngest in the class, were given a scene from a popular children's play- much to the disappointment of Aang, who was hoping to have a romantic scene with Katara. Sokka and Suki were given a scene from a play about two spies who had fallen in love without realizing the other was a spy. Zuko, of course, was paired with Katara. Aunt Wu announced that they would be acting out her favorite scene from her favorite play, the classic love story, Love Amongst the Dragons. Zuko knew the story very well. The scene Aunt Wu had picked was the romantic climax of the show, and famously ends with a searing kiss. Aunt Wu left it up to the pair if they want to include the kiss. Zuko vowed to take to his grave how appealing the thought of kissing Katara sounded.

Seeing @ellakomskaikru posts explaining the appeal of Zutara, did warm me up to that ship. And since then i have this dynamic i want to see in a zutara fanfic:
Azula, together with Ty Lee and Mai tutoring Katara about the role of Fire Lady, the expectations and etiquette surrounding that station. Like who else would teach Katara about the Fire Nation royal court, and especially the way women are expected to behave? Zuko is terrible at court politics and also busy with being the Fire Lord fixing the nation.
("Even if you don't care about upsetting some uppity Fire Nation nobles, Katara, knowing why you upset those nobles is still valuable", Azula would argue, "and being knowledgeable about etiquette would also allow you to insult them more effectively")
But seeing as Ty Lee does not care about noble etiquette, Azula never followed what was thought of as proper behaviour for a young lady and Mai only ever got childhood trauma from following noble ettiquette, those three would also teach Katara about to effectively ignore kr circumvent societal expectations.
("The Fire Lady should always be a perfect picture of poise and elegance. Therefore a Fire Lady does not run in the hallways", Mai explained, sounding even more bored then usual.
This did not explain to Katara why they currently in of the many secret tunnels running throughout the whole Fire Nation Palace.
"And since a proper Fire Lady does not run in the hallways, knowing the layout of all the secret tunnels is very important if you want to go somewhere quickly", Azula added.)
And afterwards all four of them would visit the Royal Spa. Which is one of both Katara's and Azula's favorite places in the palace.

Dear future partner,
About me └➤ So, a little bit about me: I am 22 years old and a university student working for my Masters as well as a proud cat mum. I have been roleplaying for a very long time. I like to get to know my roleplay partners and create a friendship bond. I usually get pretty invested in a roleplay, sending fanarts, headcanons, random stuff so finding someone that is able to reciprocate that would be amazing! Anyways,…let’s get into more details below!
Fandom └➤ Fandom-wise, I accept both AU versions and Canon versions but with changes of our own of course. Please see below my fandoms I am interested in and willing to Roleplay!⬫ Final Fantasy XV: Noctis Lucis Caelum ⬫ Naruto/Naruto Shippuden: Sasuke Uchiha or Neji Hyuga ⬫ Avatar the Last Airbender: Prince Zuko ⬫ The Legend of Korra: Mako ⬫ Jujutsu Kaisen: Satoru Gojo ⬫ Love and Deepspace: Zane
Rules ⬫ Rule one: I never roleplay with one-liners. I feel as if I am being robbed of a better response. If I do not get the detail needed or more information on what’s going on with your character, I don’t know how to react. Please, do not get offended if I ask for more from a response you give me! I am guilty of this too, so ask if you need more from me! My writing style is usually Semi Lit, Lit or Adv Lit, depending on my partner. But I’d prefer someone that can write 500-700+ words.⬫ Rule two: I need a detailed character layout before we start the roleplay. Everything I say or respond with is based on who your character is, not just who my character is. Your character is just as important as a factor on replies as mine is! ⬫ Rule three: My life can become hella hectic sometimes, however, I will never leave you hanging for a reply. I will tell you what’s going on and let you know when I’ll be back so that we can continue. And the same goes for you! ⬫ Rule four: Beware that I roleplay with individuals over 18+ or 20+, also I only write in the 3rd person. ⬫ Rule five: Do not rush me into a response. Thinking of a good reply is very important to me and might take a while. If you feel I have just bugged you out, send me a little message. Though that does not mean telling me to hurry up or that I am taking too long. ⬫ Rule six: Regarding pairings, here it depends. If we are going to do a 1x1 roleplay I only do FxM and I am playing the female role. Sorry. If we are going to do a Doubling roleplay I can do both FxM and FxF. Regarding Fandom roleplays, I only do CanonxOc.
Do’s and Dont’s └➤Do’s ⬫ Be 18+ or 20+ ⬫ Develop the plot with me and contribute. This means as we are making the plot and roleplaying I will not be the only one carrying the plot out. ⬫ Match the amount I am roleplaying with. This means give me the same amount of information to build off of that I give you. ⬫ Tell me when you’re leaving or can’t reply for a while. Also, tell me when you’re back so that we can continue. ⬫ I only Roleplay in third person!!! ⬫ Be actively communicative and invested in the roleplay as I am, otherwise it is only one sided and it is not fun.
└➤Dont’s ⬫ Don’t message me if you believe yourself to be a shy person or someone that does not want to talk OOC or someone that is purely dry in responses. I will not waste my time because I want to become friends, I want us to simp over our characters, and talk about whatever! ⬫ Attempt to just branch off what I say and only give reactions. I cannot carry the weight of the roleplay all on my own. This causes me to become frustrated and annoyed with the roleplay. ⬫ Reply with something that gives me nothing to reply with. That’s how a roleplay dies. ⬫ Randomly leave and expect me to not be confused and annoyed. Understand I am impatient when I think you are ignoring me. Even if you just don’t want to reply, let me know.
Where to contact me └➤ I only roleplay on Discord, but I prefer being reached out on here privately first. In your message, I’d like you to sell yourself to me, and by that I mean: tell me your name, age, about yourself, why do you think we are a good match, what caught your eye in my ad, give me an example of your writing, etc. That kinda stuff you know? I will not accept a simple “Found your ad, let’s rp”, like what happened to Hello, How are you? Sell yourself to me!!! I will be giving my discord tag if we are compatible, and I hope we are.
Looking forward to hear from you!

Finally finished NATLA. Thoughts:
They ruined Yue's character. Why would a princess be helping casually in the kitchen. Why would a princess display 0 manners around someone she just met. personality completely different.
They had Yue faint repeatedly just to magically sit back up when they needed an exposition dump, then faint again.
They made Hahn a good person? Why is Yue suddenly a waterbender and traipsing around the spirit world? It doesnt add anything and feels out of place.
The interactions between Pakku and Katara were stilted and forced. In the cartoon she had a training period and earned his trust, but here it was just instantly granted that she was the person to report to during battle, yet she doesnt know AQa's defense layout or anything else because she just arrived.
battle pacing in Agna Qel'a is weird. too much standing around talking.
The dialogue is so Marvelized. quip quip quip quip quip.
Aang is joyless and talking like Iron Man. (not the actor's fault.)
Zuko is perfect, 11/10. Every change they made is perfect.
Combining arc beats (e.g. Jet + mechanist) worked surprisingly well.
They made Bumi into an asshole and his dialogue was repetitive, that arc dragged out way too long.
Wasn't atmospheric enough. everything felt like a set.
How did Momo, half the size of a housecat, push that girl out of the way? physics are not mathing.
Why did they take Momo to the spirit oasis to heal but not any of the battle participants or injured civilians. Scene ate too much screen time and sapped urgency from the battle. Makes AQ'a look stupid.
Jet was perfect.
Multiple issues with logic, too long to post. Writing is shallow.
Azula is snarking to her father too much considering she just watched her brother get half his face melted off for one instance of disrespect.
Pecs. 🙏
not enough in-series justification for why Ozai wanted Zuko out of the way in favor of Azula. We know why, but they aren't standing on their own for this beat and have to lean on the cartoon.
Katara and Sokka getting btfo by Koh felt... really strange. they were just there to job and create stakes.
Kuruk and Kyoshi were great inclusions.
Jee/the 41st was a great detail, best part of series.
Azula being the puppetmaster behind Zhao is strange. She knows things by magic I guess, they made a 14 year old girl not just plausibly cunning but straight up omniscient. Logic breaking keikaku doori with her and Ozai.
Ozai using AQ'a as a distraction to take Omashu makes zero logical sense and I don't want to write an essay so just think about this for 5 minutes. I almost screamed.
bf's contribution: "this feels like it was written during the writer's strike."
Visually it was beautiful and the scenery and costumes were great. Other than Yue and Pakku the actors were all fine. Zuko's actor was beyond perfect and his firebending was next level gorgeous.
Sokka's new backstory was a good inclusion. Sokka got a lot of great scenes and the actor is a perfect fit.
Gyatso was also astonishingly perfect. chef's kiss to the actor, his performance was beautiful.
Very much noticing the Kataang scenes were all removed and we got some Zutara allusions. I ship that so yay.
The Sokka/Suki scenes were spicy. However she removed her makeup in 3 seconds flat and that broke my immersion. Please ask a woman next time. otherwise yes I ship that. Just kiss already!
I like the beautiful older lady they put in charge of Kyoshi Island. Nice to see more females in leadership positions.
The lack of the Azula chime is criminal. Her using feminine charm to lure rebels into a trap was a great scene to introduce her. Glad to see rebels, it makes it feel more politically realistic.
The opening scene in ep 1 had Mulan's opening scene vibes in a good way.
Overall: enjoyable with a few caveats but writing quality falls apart upon critical inspection. Much better than I expected, rewatch-worthy. 8/10.

‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Boss on Adapting Beloved Anime: ‘It Was a Balancing Act’
Albert Kim needs you to know that he is an “Avatar: The Last Airbender” superfan.
The writer and executive producer of Netflix’s live-action retelling of the Nickelodeon cartoon took on the role of showrunner after creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko exited the series — but he was already part of the writers room and a longtime “Avatar” fan before that.
“I did work with [DiMartino and Konietzko] for a short period, and we overlapped while we were here and I got along great with them,” Kim told IndieWire ahead of “Avatar”s February 22 premiere. “I was excited just as a fan to be able to dig in and ask my own nerdy fan questions about Zuko’s mom and who Aang’s parents might be, and all the fun stuff fans like to talk about.”
Since diving into and immersing himself in all things “Avatar,” Kim may have unlocked a new level of fandom. During a 30-minute chat with IndieWire, he references details both in the animated series and in his own version, specific musical pieces, and the number of rings at the Pohuai Stronghold. But when it came to turning the adventure-of-the-week cartoon into an eight-episode drama, he knew he had to look at the story differently.
“The first thing I did was layout all 20 episodes of the original series on a big whiteboard, and then took a step back and looked at the whole arc and said, ‘What are the elements that can go together? Where the narrative through lines that connect?'” Kim said. “When you take a look at the overall arc, you realize there are certain things that go together just naturally, thematically. You have a character like Jet (Sebastian Amoruso) who is someone who’s pushed to an extreme place because of the war, and then you have a character like the mechanist (Danny Pudi), who is also someone who has been pushed to an extreme place because of the war. They both have good intentions, but they find themselves on opposite sides of the line. In the original, those stories take place in completely different locations, so we thought what if we bring them together? That felt like a natural way to create a thematic throughline.”
That also meant making sacrifices, whether it was because of new story directions (the break in to Avatar Roku’s temple) or for practical reasons like scale and budget. The writers room was a mix of diehard fans and the uninitiated, as was the set (there may have been some “Avatar” tattoos), to create accountability for which story points were essential and which could be repurposed.
“It was more a matter of getting the right ratio — mixing and matching the familiar elements with the new elements, whether or not something felt true to the spirit of the original,” Kim said. “That allowed us to explore new stories, which is also hopefully what fans will expect. They want to see all the familiar stuff, but they also want to be surprised. You don’t want to do a direct one-to-one translation. You want to be able to say this is a fresh story in its own right.”
This interview has been edited for length and clarity.
IndieWire: The show really feels like it’s made for fans. How important was it to you to hit that but also make it accessible to newcomers?
Albert Kim: Well, that’s the whole game, isn’t it? It’s about making sure that millions of diehard fans aren’t disappointed, while also being appealing to a whole generation of new viewers who know nothing about the original — and that was a tough tightrope to walk. Every step of the way we just tried to remind ourselves that we can’t get too caught up in our own cleverness, and had to remember there are some people who don’t know who any of these characters are or what the bending is or what this world is, and we had to make sure that everything felt accessible to them.
At the same time, we knew there were plenty of people who had very specific things they wanted to see from the show, so we tried to make sure we worked in as many of those as we could. It was a balancing act. Luckily, it wasn’t necessarily exclusive. It wasn’t like including a great action scene involving Aang (Gordon Cormier) and Bumi (Utkarsh Ambudkar) precludes new viewers from getting into it. So the main thing with the diehard fans is making sure that they’re aware this is a new version of the story. As familiar as it might seem, we are telling our version of “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” so things will change, things will feel different, but hopefully in a way that also feels familiar. One of the things we told ourselves throughout production is it should be fresh, but familiar.
I would love to know more about the decision to move up some of this season 2 stuff, not only Ozai (Daniel Dae Kim) and Azula (Elizabeth Yu) but even some of the Omashu stuff.
It was all part of that same process of looking at the entire arc thematically and seeing what worked best. At certain points we found there were certain elements from later seasons that worked really well in our story. We had the benefit of hindsight; we could look back at a completed series, the three seasons of the original series and knew what was to come and what was going to happen there. So we were allowed to pick and choose a little bit without hopefully disrupting too much of the future seasons. The decision, for instance, to have more Azula and Ozai in the first season, that felt natural to me because I wanted to be able to balance out the story a little bit and show more of the Fire Nation than they did in the original. They are the antagonists so you want to know more about them, we want to know more about what went into Zuko’s (Dallas Liu) makeup and psychology and why he is the way he is, as well as tee up Azula and Ozai a little more for the subsequent seasons. Those felt very natural to me; again, I’m sure some fans are gonna have an issue with that, but I’m comfortable with those decisions. Again, there’s also practical reasons; The Fire Nation storyline gave us standing sets and locations we could cut to, whereas we’re going from different locations with our heroes every episode, so it provided storytelling balance in that sense too.
And then what was particularly exciting or daunting when you got to actually filming and being on set? It sounds like the visual effects and the budget was a big looming factor.
There are things you can do in animation that prove extremely difficult to do from a practical and financial reasons in live action. A sequence like the escape from Pohuai in the animation, which is incredibly epic sequence, is a very challenging one to do live action. We knew we wanted to do it because it was such a memorable thing, but we had to cut some corners here and there. I’m sure diehard fans will notice that our version of the Pohuai Stronghold only has two rings as opposed to three — that was cost savings thing. Hopefully it didn’t affect that sequence or the storyline that much. There were little corners we had to cut here and there to make those things work. It’s about being able to do something in live action that may be a little easier when it comes down to just illustrating.
Who’s your favorite character to watch or to write for — or both?
Oh, that’s always hard to answer because they all feel like my babies. They’re each great in their own way. Who doesn’t like Sokka (Ian Ousley) and his sense of humor? It’s so much fun to write for that. Or Aang and his optimism and childlike sense of hope? It’s incredibly refreshing to be able to write a character like that, and dare I say it’s something that’s needed in this day and age, so that was great. Katara (Kiawentiio) is probably the most emotional of the characters, so that’s catnip for writers. I would argue Zuko is probably the most popular character from the original series because of his incredible redemption arc; I think one of my favorite episodes of our series is all centered around Zuko; the sixth episode may be my favorite of the whole season.
I was really struck by how much Aang really seems like a little kid in this version. Was that conscious or just a byproduct of casting Gordon?
One of the things I’ve talked a lot about as being authentic in the show. That means being culturally authentic, being authentic to the original series, and also being age authentic. Aang is 12-year-old, and I wanted to make sure we cast a 12-year-old — actually Gordon was 11 when we cast him but he became 12, we had his birthday on set — and same with Katara being 15 and Zuko and Sokka as well. I didn’t want to cast a 25-year-old to play a 15-year-old. I know that’s a convention that happens in Hollywood, but that didn’t feel right to me because the journey of these characters is the journey of a bunch of kids, and it’s their outlook as kids that ends up changing the world. So it was very important for me to cast age-appropriately. I think fans will be surprised because it’s one thing to see a 12-year-old as a cartoon as another to see a real life 12-year-old, but I think it’s right for the story and hopefully people will will accept that.
It was very hard to watch him cry! He’s baby.
It makes you automatically feel for him when he’s a live-action 12-year-old kid — not that the original cartoon didn’t either, but there is more immediacy to seeing a live person going through those emotions, especially when they’re a child.
As a fan of the original, do you participate in shipping? I can’t help noticing certain choices in this show… Cave of Two Lovers, no Aang? Interesting…
I know better than to get into that debate. There’s no winning if I start talking about which ships I’m into. Fortunately for me, that becomes a tomorrow or later-season problem as you get into the original series and where those actually start to develop. It’s not something we had to address a whole lot in the first season. There were choices — like you said, with the cave of two lovers, but that was less about any kind of future romance or relationship and more about thematically what worked best for that story. That was a time in our season season where Katara and Sokka were in conflict, and it felt like the right move to have them go through the tunnels and be hit with the message of “Love is brightest in the dark.” It was less about shying away from any potential romance or relationship and more about what felt right for that story at that moment.
Having now filmed and watched it, what is something that has really struck you to see now on live action?
Seeing the final VFX go in and witnessing the epic nature of the story has been incredible, because even knowing what’s to come and having been there while we shot those scenes, it’s still not until you can see it on the screen with all of the VFX in place that you realize the emotional impact of certain scenes. Aside from that, it’s actually seeing the performances of these actors. Having been there on the day in production and seeing them is one thing, but then seeing them on the screen as an episode cut together, it’s just so much more moving. The ending of 106 I’ve watched so many times I’ve lost count, but it still brings a tear to my eye every single time. That’s something that I never get tired of.
Paul’s (Sun-Hyung Lee) performance during the episode with the funeral of his son is another scene that brings a tear to my eye every single time. As great as the original was, it didn’t have that kind of impact on me back then. I mean, “Leaves From the Vine” can make me misty every single time I hear it, but seeing Paul do that scene at his son’s funeral was just shattering.
The finale ends with Zuko recognizing that he has been manipulated by his family, and the comet coming back. Because of those back-to-back scenes, I feel like they’re positioned as equal conflicts, which is another significant change.
The comet was an interesting element in the original because it provided a ticking clock for the story. Aang and the others knew that they had to complete their mission before the comet returned. We didn’t have that available to us for a very practical reason which is that we didn’t know how long it would be before we can shoot a Season 2 or 3. However, I always knew that the looming threat of the comet had to be there, so we added it as that very end scene, to show that we were aware the threat is out there. It’s coming. And as it so happens, it ends up capping Zuko’s arc for the first season as well. That’s what creates that parallel that you’re talking about. That’s another thing that we had to consider in making the transition from an animated show to a live action is how do we account for the time span of the story? In the original series, pretty much all three seasons took place within the span of a calendar year. That was not something we’d ever be able to do, and it’s not something we can even try to do because human actors actually age and grow older and change. We had to account for that going into the first season.
It bookends Zuko’s arc but then you also have the very clear parallel of the comet in the beginning in the comet at the end, which I thought was a nice touch.
We wanted to do that bookend — to your point, new viewers might not even recognize what that is, probably won’t. But there’s that bookend there both for the fans of the show, but also if you go back and rewatch it you’ll see it begins and ends with the comet. Another way we bookended the series is the opening episode highlights Firelord Sozin’s (Hiro Kanagawa) strategy of misdirection and how he used that to attack the Air Nomads; and at the very end you see Firelord Ozai use the exact same tactic and reveal that he used the misdirection to conquer Omashu.
I’m still so curious how people who don’t know this world at all are going to respond. How would you pitch this show to someone who knows nothing about “Avatar,” who is just opening up their Netflix on February 22?
I would say that “Avatar” is this epic fantasy about a group of kids who set out to bring hope back to a world that’s in desperate need of it. Along the way they become a family, and bring that sensibility to everyone they meet on their journey. At heart, that’s what it is to me emotionally. On top of that, there is epic action and adventure with fantastical creatures, incredible environments, and bending effects that will blow you away.
They will airbend you away! Sorry. It sounds like you’re bracing yourself for some criticism, but what would you say to fans after they’ve watched these eight episodes, knowing that Season 2 or 3 may or may not be on the horizon?
I hope that they recognized and felt the love that we all had behind the scenes for the show and the story and the characters. We, like them, approached it as fans first and foremost, and respected what they expected from the show, and hopefully delivered on that. It sounds a little obvious, but I get the impression some people actually question our fandom level of the show itself, so I hope that comes through.
“Avatar: The Last Airbender” is now streaming on Netflix.

Skin & Scale (Part 14)
Trying to move Azula is no easy feat. In fact it is impossible unless they can convince her to do it herself. She isn’t a particularly large dragon but she is about the size of a camelephant. Sokka would guess that, that would put her at somewhere around eleven feet tall. Perhaps a bit more. They have gotten her to stand up, but she has been doing that on and off so this is no accomplishment.
“Come on Azula, please go now. The longer you wait, the more people will wake up and then you’ll have a bigger risk of crushing someone.” Sokka pleads.
“Your parents can’t come back here, there’s no room.” Katara adds.
One baby dragon can fit comfortably enough in the palace garden but two fully grown dragons and a baby?
Azula’s holds her body rigidly in place.
“This isn’t like you.” He calls. “Since when do you let fear stop you from doing activities?” Since when does she let fear cloud rational. He is beginning to wonder if the transformation had a little bit more of human Azula than he had anticipated. Fourteen year old Azula never hesitates. But a baby dragon? Of course a baby dragon is anxious. “Katara, what if she’s…?”
Katara shakes her head. “That’s still Azula in there.” It has to be. The words are unspoken but he knows that tone well enough.
That’s just the thing; it doesn’t have to be. Ran and Shaw wanted their child, they will have her. And maybe it is better if there is no trace of human Azula in there. It would make things much less complicated. There won’t be any hesitance to leave the palace that way. She wouldn’t have any reason not to go with them, no reluctances nor skepticism.
That part of her, the one that had been hesitant to show them the scales creeping up her arm, won’t be around to keep her from second guessing going with Ran and Shaw.
Azula seems to inspect the world below her before lifting a very reluctant claw and agonizingly slowly stepping it over the garden wall. She pulls it back in and it is then that Sokka understands her predicament. All at once he is confident that the Azula they know is still very much present. Present and well aware of the layout of her home.
Beyond the garden wall is a larger, newly constructed, fortifying inner wall. When that is just small enough to keep her sandwiched between the garden wall and itself and just large enough for her to not be able to step over.
Beyond the wall, if he recalls correctly, is just an empty expanse–the stony remains of a dormant volcanic crater with maybe a sprinkle of small trees and fire lilies here and there. And beyond that is the outermost fortification. But there is plenty of space for a dragon or three within that space.
Azula tests her weight against the wall and utters a displeased grumble. She sulks back into the garden.
“Just climb it.” Sokka sighs.
She shakes her dragon head.
“Stop being so stubborn.”
Azula pinches a rock between two of her clawed fingers and rests it upon a larger rock. She knocks it over with a flick of her finger. He watches the stone tumble down.
“Yeah, I know.” He frowns. “Just topple it. You did bust a hole through the actual palace wall, this is much less destructive. Zuko can commission someone to build a dragon door out of the hole you create.” He pauses. “And if you’re worried about security, that main fortification has kept people out for how long now?”
Looking reasonably displeased Azula seems to regard the wall again.
“Maybe if you’re lucky the wall will support you, afterall?” Katara tries with a smile.
Sokka hadn’t tested the structural stability of that wall for himself but even he knows that, that isn’t true. He has seen lion-mooses smaller than her put some respectable cracks in their zoon enclosures. And those enclosures were fully constructed. This wall still has some final touches that it needs.
But Azula doesn’t particularly have many better options. Another would be to fly over it but she doesn’t know how to use her wings and even if she did, they still don’t look as if they have had the necessary exercise and tonging to support her weight yet. Really, they are about as good as penguin wings right now. They are good for perhaps a few smaller, tester flaps.
He also doesn’t think that she has enough room to spread them out, not when she has had no practice with them.
Azula stretches to her full height and attempts to climb over the wall, for a fleeting moment, he thinks that she might make it with no evidence of her action. She is a little more than half over the wall when he hears the cracking. He sees them forming from the middle outward. And the stonework explodes beneath her. Sokka throws himself on top of Katara–she cries out–and slings his arms over his head as some sizable rocks fling past.  He hears them pelt the palace and splash into the garden’s pond.
He hears the last of the rocks skitter to their final resting points and he rises. Wincing, he brushes his pants off. Pants that now have two twin holes. His knees and elbows sting. It has been a good while since he has had scrapes on either of them.
Swallowing he takes a step towards the crumbled wall.
“Sokka, let me heal…”
“Let me check on Azula first.”
Katara nods.
Azula lays in a heap of rubble and dust. A rusty cloud that billows away from her. Her claws twitch.
“Azula!” He calls.
Slowly, stiffly. She raises her head. Large chunks of the wall clamor off of her body and to the ground when she stirs.  Her head seems to sway–a little unsteady, dazed. She blinks a few times and looks back.
Other than the scars that had transferred over from her human body, her dragon form seems to be entirely unscathed. But she looks terribly sad. Ashamed.
“It’s alright, Azula.” Katara mumbles. “You’re still getting used to being a dragon. We shouldn’t have talked you into moving before you were ready.”
But what was the alternative? Waiting around for weeks to have that wall torn carefully down? Hiring a team of many burly earthbenders and Toph to raise the ground she stood on and carry it over the wall? Honestly, he thinks that the best idea would have been to just suggest that she punch the wall on purpose again, it worked out fine enough the first time.
Hindsight…
.oOo.
Azula curls herself up just a few feet from the wreckage. It now has a crowd of several very distraught palace servants. They are probably more sick of her now than they had been when she was banishing everyone. At least then they were able to take their leave and be done with the stress.
Zuzu is going to be displeased. If father were here he would be having a nice set of golden, gilded manacles crafted in just her size. He’d have her chained and shackled where she lays. She shudders.
She should have been more careful.
She should have taken the time to think it over more, the time to figure out which portion of the wall could best support her weight...
Katara assures her that it isn’t a big deal.
But it is.
Very much so.
Now that she has knocked over both this wall and one of the palace walls, intruders and assassins can have a much easier time breaching the palace and wreaking havoc and it is her fault. It will be on her carelessness and incompetence. On her clumsiness.
She coils her tail around her body and rests her head beneath it.
“It’s not your fault.” Katara insists again.
Azula exhales.
She doesn’t lift her head.
Not when she feels Sokka’s hand rubbing her snout and not when the two large shadows fall over her.

ATLA fic: "The Ancient World" - Character Arcs and OC's
Normally I don't do “This is my OC” posts, but I’ve been revisiting one of my shelved fics — The Ancient World, a crossover AU between ATLA and Godzilla.
I’m currently writing draft chapters and segments that I am posting on AO3 as one shots. So I thought I’d talk more about the story while I’m working on the drafts.
“But you told this story before-”
Tumblr media
Summary: Taking place a few years after Avatar The Last Airbender. The United Republic began international mining operations in the Earth Kingdom and Water Tribes, as society progresses with early technological advancements. When they dug too deep, they uncovered the remains of an ancient civilization lost to time, and regarded as myth. When dug deeper, they awaken Titans - beasts of these myths, that brought “The Ancient World” to an end, and may do the same to the current one.
Tumblr media
One such the Titan known as “Godzilla” decimates the Water Tribes and makes his way to and through the Fire Nation and Earth Kingdoms. Another is a weakened and wounded dragon fleeing the wrath of Godzilla. Quickly showing its own spiritual power, communicating with humanity, introducing itself as Ghidorah, a claiming to be “guardian” sent to protect the world from Godzilla. Too weak to do much of anything (save for destroying a vast cabbage field), Ghidorah is seen as harmless by the general populations, who rally behind him as the only one who can stop Godzilla.
The leaders of the Water, Fire and Earth Kingdoms elect to throw their armies to face Godzilla until such a time Ghidorah’s power is restored. While Aang, his Team  and a small band of Kyoshi warriors, seek out the secrets of these monsters and try to find the way to put a stop to them with as little bloodshed as possible, Zuko is pushed by the other leaders, prioritizing the threat of Godzilla and a militant approach to deal with them. During an initial encounter with Azula and her followers out at sea, Godzilla attacks the expedition, getting them stranded on “The Uncharted Lands”.
Between Ghidorah’s growing power, and the hero’s isolation, people on both sides find themselves going down the rabbit hole, learning of the Ancient World, and the monsters that brought it to an end in a bid to save their current one.
— — — —
Getting the obvious twist out of the way, the titular “Ancient World” was our time period, wiped out by an apocalyptic event called "The Final Wars", which occurred about a century before Avatar Wan's time.
At the time of ATLA it’s now regarded as ancient history/myth. The present world of ATLA is the result of civilization and humanity having to rebuild over a millennia, with spirits stepping in following the Final Wars to help restore the world.
Anyways, this I covered this story in few other posts. You can read the full layout, here, but this post specifically covers shipping arcs and OC's. This will be part one of two posts, that will talk more about the monsters in this AU and how they're portrayed.
This AU may be out of date, with Azula in the Spirit Temple's release, but it’s still something I like to revisit.
— — — —
Monster Humans Interactions
Including the mysticism of ATLA's world, some Titans, such as Mothra and Ghidorah have a supernatural and spiritual aspect to them. The Lion Turtles are revealed to be such Titans, having helped humanity after the Final Wars.
There is also a new power called “Channeling”; where an enlightened enough human (usually a bender) can soul-bond with a Titan through meditation. From this, a Titan’s consciousness can be channeled through them to the point of verbal communication.
When Aang and Katara have regular meditation sessions, Katara ends up “Channeling” Godzilla at a few points, getting more of an understanding of Godzilla, pretty much interacting with them face to face. In these instances, Godzilla shows he has a marginal understanding of human emotion, but social interaction is an alien concept that leaves him baffled.
His attempts to comprehend slang, expressions and etiquette are Played for Laughs.

Stronger beings like Ghidorah channel through others by force. Ghidorah does so to Mai; speaking through her to manipulate Zuko and the Nation's other leaders, selling himself as a "Guardian Monster" protecting the world from the "evil" Godzilla.
Ghidorah is physically weakened for two thirds of the story, manipulating the Nations' leaders into throwing their armies against Godzilla, forcing Mai to be his mouth piece. Ghidorah keeps Mai in line by threatening to kill Tom Tom using her own hands.
“Channeling” is a call back to the OG Ghidorah movie, which featured an alien possessing a princess. It is also a nod towards the Heisei character Miki Saegusa, who had a psychic link with Godzilla. “Guardian Monsters” originates from GMK, in which Godzilla was the villain, against an unusually heroic Ghidorah.
In fact, the story Ghidorah sells though Mia is pretty much a recap of GMK, even having Ember Island host a stage play adaptation as “Pro Ghidorah” propaganda.
Tumblr media
This story also features Bagan as a secondary threat. For those who don't know, Bagan is a monster infamous in the Godzilla fandom for numerous planned but scrapped movie appearances.
Bagan's "canon" backstory describes him as this "Demonic Dragon God" or "The God of Darkness", causing no end of edgy portrayals of Bagan in the fandom; in fact, there was an IRL urban legend for an unmade "Godzilla vs the Devil", originating from a mistranslation for one of Bagan's scripts.
Tumblr media
In this story, Bagan is a demonic dragon that Ghidorah claims is another "Guardian Monster" who can fight Godzilla in his stead. Because Bagan is bound to the Fire Nation, Zuko is the one who has the final say in actually releasing him. Zuko reluctant to do so because, y'know, the whole "demonic dragon" thing.
However, when the Nation's leaders receive fabrications of a coup plotted by Azula, claiming that she's taken control of Godzilla, Zuko is talked into giving the "Okay". Bagan then rampages across the Nations, becoming a threat that unites humanity with Godzilla, leading to a fight in Ba Sing Se.
After his defeat, Bagan flees to recover, before Ghidorah soon kills him and drains his power. Ghidorah then drops an exhausted Godzilla into the Boiling Lake, becoming the antagonist for the remaining third of the story.

Character Arcs
For Katara and Aang's arc, Aang wants to understand these monsters, and learn what they can of them. Aang also privately worries about the Air Nomads and the current world being forgotten in the same way the Ancient World was reduced to myths. For this, he and Katara try to reach an understanding with Godzilla whenever he is channelled.
We learn Godzilla lost faith in humanity sometime after the Final Wars; following a cycle of war, genocide and environmental damage, when Godzilla last awoke (Kyoshi’s era), he saved the world from another monster — the Nation's armies showed their gratitude by attacking Godzilla while he was exhausted and injured.
To fix this, Aang and Katara try showing Godzilla that humanity is still worth caring about, having Godzilla look through Katara’s eyes as they interact with the world around and through them.
In Zuko and Mai's subplot, Zuko's in a position where he and the Three Nations rally against Godzilla, with their people flocking to Ghidorah as their "savior". Zuko gradually realizes Ghidorah's true colors, and what he's really doing with Mai.
Tumblr media
Zuko steps up, helping Mai sever Ghidorah's link and attempts to expose Ghidorah's manipulations to the Nation's leaders. Unfortunately Ghidorah has another ace up his sleeve that makes the situation worse, now "channelling" himself through Kiyi.
But my favorite character arc in this was Azula's, being an Azula Redemption fic. Following Smoke and Shadow, Azula is a Decoy Antagonist still trying to influence Zuko and his rule, getting her hands dirty where Zuko's are tied.
Azula and her new crew follow Aang’s expedition behind Zuko’s back, with Ty Lee among the Kyoshi warriors joining them.  Azula thinks she can play the situation ostensibly for Zuko's benefit; international mining operations discover what is soon revealed to be nuclear materials. After a test with these materials goes awry, Zuko hands them over to Aang and his expedition in hopes they can quietly dispose of them.
Azula's initial plan is to use these materials to manufacture something to deal with the Titans, and instill the Fire Nation as a world superpower. Godzilla attacks Aang’s expedition, leaving them and Azula's crew, on the "Uncharted Lands".
From there, Azula goes through a similar arc as Zuko did in season three; having a “bonding chapter/episode” with Team Avatar, and two with Ty Lee.
This would also be a Tyzula fic.
Tumblr media
Azula doesn't have the same humility as Zuko, and is a lot more reluctant to open up and show her vulnerability to others. A lot of the time when Azula shows compassion or does something altruistic, she tries to downplay it. There's a point where she saves a baby from choking, trying to brush is off as "Well, if it wasn't me, it would have been someone else."
It isn’t until Azula accidentally soul bonds with Mothra that she actually airs out her baggage to the others. While this is also a Tyzula story, we don’t go for “Caretaker Ty Lee”. In fact, Ty Lee’s arc is about being assertive. She doesn’t immediately forgive Azula, nor is she relegated to Azula’s support system. In fact, Aang has more to do with helping Azula than Ty Lee.
Ty Lee has mixed feelings, second guessing herself whether she is just afraid of Azula or has buried romantic feelings for her. Initially reconnecting with a childhood friend named, Shirio (we'll talk about him later) Ty Lee spends much of the first half telling off Azula and standing up to herself. But bit by bit her resolve falters, and romantic feelings start to boil over.
While Ty Lee herself isn’t that instrumental to Azula’s reformation, their relationship is used to juxtapose it; the more Azula heals and betters herself, the more she and Ty Lee start to reconnect. It’s only when Azula's walls break down does Ty Lee let her own walls break too.
— — — —
And then there's the Fire Nation Royal family subplot, with Kiyi and Ursa. Being 12 years old at the time of this story, Kiyi significantly differs from her comic counterpart. While Ursa tries a hand at this politics, representing the Fire Nation in Republic City, Kiyi becomes a student at Republic City's Academy.
Kiyi doesn't have many friends due to being part of the Fire Nation's royal family. The few friends she has are in it for nepotism. Kiyi isn't as close to her family because of their duties. While Azula doesn't admit it, she looks out for Kiyi, having younger followers observe her as a proxy.
Being an Azula redemption story, Azula exaggerates Ursa‘s “dismissal” of her; though Ursa herself thinks she could have done more, but has a hard time accepting her faults as faults. Not helping is Ursa often sidesteps issues instead of actually dealing with them.
Tumblr media
For example; in this story, there are rumors that Ozai is Kiyi’s biological father, and the timeline of her birth adds up. This causes some turmoil in Kiyi, especially when she’s compared to Zuko and Azula.
When Kiyi brings these concerns up, Ursa sidesteps the matter by stating Ozai didn’t raise her and so it doesn’t matter…without doing anything to actually help Kiyi’s worries or anxiety.
As a student, Kiyi’s favorite subjects were myths and history. So when Godzilla and Ghidorah awaken, Kiyi is enthusiastic to help get a better understanding of them and the Ancient World. Ursa also returns to the Fire Nation to help support Zuko and their cause.
Tumblr media
At one point, Ursa joins a conversation between Zuko and Ghidorah/Mai; Ghidorah recounts a backstory of a sibling/rival of his — “empathizing” with them regarding Azula, suggesting that they should have smothered her in the crib. It begins to click on Ursa and Zuko that this "Guardian Monster" might not be so benevolent.
When Mai’s link is later severed, Ghidorah channels himself through Kiyi — doing such a spot on impression of her, that only Mai and Zuko aware of this — using self harm to keep Zuko in line for as long as Ghidorah needs the Fire Nation to back him up. To keep Kiyi in line, Ghidorah threatens to kill Ursa with Kiyi's own two hands.
In some revisions, Ghidorah actually goes through with this threat towards the end.
Ursa, Kiyi and Zuki don't interact with Azula until the third act, with mixed reactions. While Azula helped save the Nations from Bagan, after their leader's awoke him, Zuko helped awaken Bagan because he was lied to about Azula plotting a coup, manipulating his friends, and taking control of Godzila; which was followed with Azula and Team Avatar showing up in Ba Sing Se, with Godzilla in tow.
Even when it's obvious Zuko was lied to about Azula, he still isn't sure he can trust her or his friends. It takes a scathing "What the Hell Hero ?" speech from his friends to talk some sense into him.
With Ursa, I picture her being uneasy around Azula; the most she heard of Azula is second hand accounts from Zuko. The way I see it, both fear clouds Ursa's judgement, as well as guilt for (in her mind) pushing Azula away.
Tumblr media
As for Kiyi, she considers connecting with Azula, to her family’s concern. But by the time Kiyi and Azula meet, Ghidorah is in the driver's seat. To spite Kiyi's desire to connect with Azula, Ghidorah shoots down Azula's attempts to bond with Kiyi.
I had a hard time thinking up a reconciliation that felt right for Azula and Ursa. Which is why I have Ghidorah going through with forcing Kiyi to kill Ursa in some revisions, making it a more bittersweet reconciliation.
Ghidorah then has Kiyi throw herself from a tower into the sea. Kiyi is rescued and resuscitated by Azula. In their first real interaction in this story, Kiyi hugs Azula in response.

Original Characters
First up is The Woodland's Commander - A minor but critical character, she is a more of a plot device for world building.
The is de-facto leader of her country's coalition in one of the "Uncharted Lands", it's through her and her people that the protagonists learn more about the Ancient World.
She's also an expy of Lexa from The 100.

Before The Ancient World, I wanted to do a Godzilla + The 100, crossover called, but while went nowhere, I carried quite a bit from one story to the other.
Like Lexa, the Commander is an introverted, ruthless, and pragmatic young woman; with warmer side slipping through, such as at a wedding she hosts, and she can usually be reasoned with.
When Aang and Azula's crews end up stranded in her lands, the Commander has them brought before her, deciding they'll stay at her palace's ranching village as guests. During their stay, we get some world building. We learn the “Nations” consist of multiple regions from our time period.
The Water Tribes: Consists of Alaska; Greenland; Northern Canada, and the province of British Columbia.
The Fire Nation: Consists of Japan; North China; North and South Korea; Mongolia; Far East Russia; Southern and Central Russia Kazakhstan; and the Ukraine.
The Earth Kingdoms: Consist of India, Iran, Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, South China, Tibet, Nepal, Vietnam and Thailand.
The “Uncharted Lands” broadly refer to lands outside the three Nations.
What is explored here is The Woodlands: consisting of Eastern Canada, and Eastern United States. Their culture and people are mostly based on the Grounders from The 100, and the tribes of Horizon Zero Dawn.
Tumblr media
They're familiar with Bending, but generally lack it, making it a subject of curiosity. Instead they try rebuilding technology of the Ancient World; some regions have functioning electricity and radios, and are on their way to re-creating automobiles and firearms.
They also have greater knowledge of the Titans and their history, especially the Final Wars. Besides Godzilla's bond with Katara, their objective version of the Final Wars helps turn the protagonists to Godzilla's side.
The Commander herself plays a minimal role in the story; having the protagonists brought before her and allowing their stay; hosting a wedding celebration for two of her servants, inviting the protagonists to observe their ceremonies. During Bagan's attack on her cities, she leads a defensive counter attack, and later makes a trade agreement with the United Republic.
Another “uncharted” country is mentioned several times but unexplored — The Green Islands: consisting of Ireland, Scotland, England, Wales, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland
While we don’t see The Green Islands in this story, it’s mentioned Kyoshi previously ventured there when Godzilla previously awoke. I imagine it as having a Celtic and Nordic pagan aesthetic.
— — — —
Miki - A minor but critical character, Miki’s the only member of Azula’s new crew I put much thought into. A young, nerdish woman, Miki was an abused and disowned daughter of a noble family, placed in the same sanitarium as Azula. There, she was conscripted into Azula's new crew.
It’s implied Miki was involved in the whole Kemurikage business, but that’s neither here nor there. Miki and Azula’s dynamic is described as a sisterly version of Entrapdak. In fact, Entrapta was Miki’s main inspiration.
Tumblr media
Despite her past of familial abuse, ableism and misogyny — and involvement in Azula’s schemes — Miki’s otherwise upbeat and friendly and the primary example in humanizing Azula’s new crew. What Miki lacks in bending, she makes up for in her fixation in redeveloping lost Ancient World technology. Notably, she built a functioning cattle prod that she uses as her primary weapon.
When a mining operation uncovers nuclear materials in the Fire Nation, a small nuke is inadvertently re-created, and a test goes wrong causing a village to get radiation poisoning. Zuko has the weapons stored away in hopes of eventually disposing of them. When Godzilla and Ghidroah awaken, Azula opts to recreate these weapons to destroy these monsters, make the Fire Nation a superpower, and bring “glory” to Zuko. And Miki is in charge of building them.
Miki’s dynamic with everyone is that she earnestly tries to help people, but has a problem filtering social cues and reading emotions. As a result, Miki has little filter, and tells the truth in the face. It’s implied Azula (reluctantly) respects Miki as she’s the only one not afraid to talk back to her and stand her ground when confronted on it.
Tumblr media
Miki is among those in Azula’s crew caught in the Woodlands, and the first to make an earnest attempt to befriend Team Avatar. Miki spends much of the story in the background as a passive presence, but would sometimes tell Azula what she needs to hear, as Azula’s walls break down.
While Miki’s not as active as the others, she is critical in helping Team Avatar and Azula’s new crew reach an understanding, and building bridges between them…and another miniature nuke under their noses.
That same nuke is used by Azula to revive an injured Godzilla in the third act. Miki catches on that Azula is in a dark place during the third act. When Azula goes alone to Boiling Rock, Miki tells Team Avatar what she’s up to, and they might want to talk to her out of something stupid.
Miki isn’t a participant in the fight with Ghidorah, but is among those at the celebration where Azula is publicly honored.
— — — —
Shiro - The only real human villain.
Most of this stories human antagonists are the Nations' leaders protecting their people from the “threat” of Godzilla. Characters like Kuei, Bumi, Hadoka, Arnook, even Zuko and Iroh fall into this camp.
Tumblr media
We know where they are coming from; there’s no ill will between them and Team Avatar; and they have the benefit of the doubt of (mostly) being manipulated. When they realize they were wrong in the last third, they try to make things right.
Then you got this utter raasclaat.
A young, ambitious, but minor Fire Nation noble, Shiro is looking for a spot on Zuko's court upon being released from house arrest following the war. He is also a childhood friend of Ty Lee's, having an open infatuation with her. After Ty Lee's falling out with Azula, Shirio is quick to try to reconnect with her.
Besides his relationship with Ty Lee, Shirio is something of a fanboy, and sycophant to Zuko, who often becomes put off by him. Shirio also has a serious hate boner for Azula, and makes it everyone's problem.
Initially, Shirio comes off as an enthusiastic — if arrogant and annoying — new friend to Team Avatar, looking to lend a helping hand. Shirio joins Aang's expedition, ostensibly on Zuko's behalf, but mainly because Ty Lee was coming with. But over time, we gradually see his true colors.
Shirio see's himself as this wholesome and romantic savior, “protecting” Ty Lee from “abusive influences” (Azula), while exhibiting many red flags of his own; becoming increasingly controlling of Ty Lee, keeping her dependent on him; infantilizing her under the guise of being a “concerned and protective” friend.
He also has zero sense of boundaries, to the point Ty Lee subconsciously locks her doors from him when staying in the same house.
Tumblr media
He uses gaslighting tactics whenever Ty Lee second guesses herself; self harms when things and conversations aren’t going his way. When initially stranded, Shirio keeps an injured Ty Lee in an isolated camp, claiming everyone else was killed, so he can be “alone” with her...only to feign surprise/relief when they’re found by the others.
Y’see, Shirio is a “Tender Misanthrope”: someone who deludes themselves into thinking they’re a loving, caring person, while treating everyone around them like shit. They only care about idealized images they project onto others; friends and “loved ones” are accessories. You’re only worth caring about if you’re the person they want you to be, a thought process not uncommon for abusers or groomers.
Shirio idolizes Zuko as this sort of "chad" power fantasy to vicariously live through; “likes” Ty Lee as this battered damsel of his Romantic Hero fantasies; while Azula is this toxic abuser to “protect” Ty Lee from. Anything that challenges these images or his narrative, results in Shirio showing a very ugly side.
Ironically, this means when Azula shows she’s not the monster he sees her as, Shirio hates her even more for distorting that image. Unfortunately for Shirio, he's not only in an Azula redemption story, but a Tyzula one. The more Azula heals, betters herself and reconnects with others — especially Ty Lee — the more openly hateful and toxic Shirio becomes.
Tumblr media
There is a point in the story where Azula saves a choking baby in the house they're staying at — Shiro privately considers smothering the baby for being “tainted” by Azula. He only doesn't go through with it, because he couldn't think of a way to get away with it at the time.
When Ty Lee soon tells him off for his increasingly toxic behavior, Shirio punches a stone wall beside her head to try shut her up, unfazed that he broke his own hand.
Later reaching out to the Nations' leaders, Shirio lies that Azula is plotting a coup and weaponizing Godzilla, and manipulated Team Avatar to her side. Ostensibly to “help” his people, Shirio makes a blood pact with Bagan and encourages a paranoid and desperate Zuko to give the "Okay" to setting Bagan against Godzilla.
As a blood sacrifice, Shirio orders mass executions of the Fire Nation’s prisoners, regardless of their crimes, engineering Bagan's awakening. Bagan's subsequent rampage kills about 900,000 people across the Nation's and a city in the Woodlands.
All to punish Ty Lee for “loving a monster”.
Tumblr media
On a comedic note, Bagan is flatly disappointed to learn Shirio's actual motives for setting him loose.
After Bagan is defeated, an unrepentant Shirio is confronted, cornered and imprisoned. We last see him at the end, after Ghidroah's death; when Azula is publicly honored and reconciles with her surviving family, a bitter and seething Shirio hears the news in his cell.
While Shirio's story end with his imprisonment, years later, Ty Lee and Azula would start a family, through mystical means of conception I won't explain here; having a daughter named Yasuko, and from her, a granddaughter named Asami.
Tumblr media
You're probably wondering if Shirio has any tragic backstory ? Eh, not really. Shirio lived a pampered life as a noble, with the only real setback was his four year house arrest. “But why does he hate Azula ?" You ask "If they knew each other as children, she must have done something to him, right ?”
As children, Azula often teased Shirio regarding his lack of fighting prowess, and status as a lesser noble. In retaliation, Shirio eventually cornered Azula outside the girls' academy, attempting to strangle Azula and bash her head with a rock. In self defense, Azula broke his wrist. Shirio was subsequently put under house arrest until Zuko pardoned him shortly into his rule.
But the worst part was Ty Lee stopped hanging out with him in favor of Azula. For this, Shirio saw Azula as this wretched, inhuman monster, and is genuinely offended at the insinuation that she isn't. Comparatively, Shirio's idolization of Zuko began when the young prince took him to get his hand bandaged after Azula broke it — a single gesture that Zuko himself barely remembers.
That’s it. That's his sob story. That's all the tragedy and nuance he's gonna get.
— — — —
I may do a follow up post, talking more about the monsters featured in this AU. I would have done so here, but it was getting bloated.

Boundaries:
I won't participate in ship discourse. I just won't, it's not worth it. I have my reservations on certain things and Imma keep it to myself.
What I will do is participate in fandom, fandom activities, and the occasional discourse about the shows/games/comics themselves!
Interests & Hobbies:
When I'm offline I tend to read here and there.
I write mostly romantic/ship-related fanfic and even original works with original characters! Occasionally, I post poetry when I'm in A Mood(TM).
It's an absolute delight to talk about all of my characters that I've taken so much time to craft <3
I make playlists on Spotify and Youtube based on stories I've written, favorite characters, favorite ships, and original characters! I'll be adding those links to my Carrd once I have them both up-to-date c:
I'm not entirely sure what I should be posting on Tumblr? This site is very awkward for me and I feel a tad isolated every time I open it. So if anyone has any ideas of what they'd like to see or a better way to be more engaging drop me an ask!
I might make a post for snippet requests and whatnot that y'all can choose from as well! It'll take a bit, but it'll be up eventually lol.
If you wanna find me anywhere else like Twitter, AO3, Commaful, Wattpad (Idk why, but it's an option), and more then you can find my Carrd in my bio!
Thanks for reading this far and getting to know me! If you have any questions then you know where the ask and DM buttons are c:

Uncharted Waters: Fallen
Tumblr media
“It was a total accident,” Lily said with an incredulous laugh. “There had to be three or four of them, looking like we were the tastiest meal they’d seen all week. Then Chong,” she slapped her friend on the back, “played the sweetest note anyone’s ever heard.”
“Sweet note!” Moku snorted. “He accidently strummed his strings. It was a terrible noise in all that echo.”
“It was enough to get those beasts off of us,” Lily laughed, “so as far as I’m concerned, it was the most heavenly sound I’ve ever heard!” She slapped Chong on the back.
“That’s amazing!” Katara said. “Who knew badgermoles liked music so much?”
“Ah, it’s not so surprising,” Chong said, demurely. “Music touches every living thing. We’re all just vibing to the same universal jam. All I did was remind the badgermoles of that.” A murmur of agreement rippled through the musicians.
It shouldn’t have been a shock that badgermoles called the tunnels home. After all, according the legend, it was the badgermoles that taught Oma and Shu how to earthbend. It explained much about their experience in the tunnels. The badgermoles were responsible for the ever shifting tunnel layout, not the ghosts of the tragic couple. They must have been responsible for the screaming Katara and Zuko had heard in the cave. They shared a shudder over how close they had come to encountering the animals, and without the benefit of the musical stylings of Chong. The soldiers being caught first was an unbelievable bit of good fortune.
“I’m just glad you two made it out,” Chong said. “I was wondering how we’d manage to ask the badgermoles to go look for you. It was a wild time trying to communicate we wanted to get out in the first place.”
“How did you get out?” Hua asked. “Did you find badgermoles, too?”
“Um…” Katara and Zuko glanced at each other, and then turned away immediately, faces beet red.
“We…we um-“ Zuko stammered.
“We found the path,” Katara said.
“Glowing green rocks,” Zuko added.
“O-our torch went out-“
“It just went out. I’d set it down and it went out,” Zuko explained hurriedly, his voice oddly high. His shoulders were hunched so high that all that could be seen was the top of his head.
“And we just followed the path out,” Katara finished with a nervous giggle.
