Among the young men in the nunnery cheerfulness returned with the sun that shone on Brest from a clear calm sky within twenty-four hours of their miserable journey from Trégonnec, and with it their naval sense of fun. The commissary charged with drawing up a correct official list, which included among other things their grandmothers' maiden names, dates and places of birth, received some strange answers, delivered in sober, lugubrious tones, so strange that the port-admiral summoned Captain Aubrey. 'I refuse to believe, sir,' he said, 'that all your officers but one are descended from Queen Anne.'    'I am sorry to tell you, sir, that Queen Anne is dead,' said Jack. 'Common decency, therefore, forbids me to make any comment.' 'It is my opinion,' said the Admiral, 'that they have replied with a culpable levity. Such parents as the Emperor of Morocco, Creeping Jenny, Guy of Warwick, Sir Julius Caesar . . . You may say that the commissary is only a mere civilian, which is profoundly true; but even so I must ask you to invite them to treat him with a proper respect. He is a servant of the Emperor!'    Jack did not seem very deeply impressed and in fact the Admiral's voice lacked full conviction. He looked at his captive for a moment and went on, 'But now I come to a far more serious matter. One of your Marines, Ludwig Himmelfahrt, has escaped.'

Pirate Media Recommendations
Along with Ryann Fletcher, Kate Heartfield, Juliet Kemp, and F.D. Lee, I'm going to be on the Queer Pirates panel at 3pm this Friday at EasterCon 2023!
Our Flag Means Death and other pirates: a panel discussion including fandom and canon of Our Flag Means Death and other series such as Black Sails. This item will start around 15 minutes after advertised start time to minimise clash with the Opening Ceremony.
You can still sign up for virtual membership of EasterCon here if you'd like to attend online, as there are going to be a great many panels and discussions throughout the con, which are gonna be great.
Coming up to the panel, I thought I'd make a list of some of my favourite pirate and nautical media to point people to, as I'm probably going to mention a bunch of it on the panel and this is a particularly fierce interest of mine!
So for Our Flag Means Death, we know that it's an interpretation of the historical relationship between Edward Teach and Stede Bonnet as a romance - two other famously queer pirates were of course Anne Bonny and Mary/Mark Read. I'm personally super excited to see if these figures will feature in Our Flag Means Death S2.
Podcast Episodes & Videos:
Ching Shih: The Pirate Queen, from Puppet History
The True Story of a Pirate Queen, from Ruining History
A History of Gay Pirates with Rebecca Simon, on the PRIDE Podcast -

Queerness in the Golden Age of Piracy, from Queer as Fact
Books & Essays:
FICTION: The Aubrey-Maturin Series, by Patrick O'Brian - The Aubreyad is not about pirates, but is a nautical-historical series of 20 books set in the 1800s. I love these books a lot, they're ridiculous and very homoerotic with a lot of background gay dynamics - you can absolutely infer a romance between Captain Jack Aubrey, a hot slab of beef, and his doctor, Stephen Maturin. They're funny and they're rich with nautical descriptions, really immersing you into the language and feel of the period and the sensation of being on these vessels. While I'm not holding these books up as a bastion of queerness compared to other texts, Maturin is a fervent abolitionist and despite being a member of Aubrey's crew is actually vehemently anti-colonialist in his views, and those discussions do play out on paper again and again. Because of their realism these books do kind of poke a hole in the naval officers being held up as inherently noble or honourable, and particularly regularly criticises the actions and ideas of the state.
FICTION: J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan - I love Peter Pan, and obviously I talk and blog about it a lot. What's particularly dear to my heart is the relationship between Hook and Smee, which is such an intimate marriage even though it's not explicitly described as such, and it makes me very emotional. This book was written at the beginning of the 20th century, and I do want to warn anyone before going in about the racism inherent - the text treats the existence of the Natives to Neverland as part of an "adventure", and there's also anti-Black racism toward many of Hook's crew, as well as the description of Hook himself as "swarthy" despite being a white Etonian. Peter Pan is a story about working class white children in London whose parents has dreams of them ascending to middle class, and the children's fears of growing up are heavily influenced by economic anxiety, but also they desire a return to a time when as young white kids "adventure" would have been more accessible to them, as is typical in the classic adventure novel.
FICTION: Peter Darling, by Austin Chant - The Lost Boys say that Peter Pan went back to England because of Wendy Darling, but Wendy is just an old life he left behind. Neverland is his real home. So when Peter returns to it after ten years in the real world, he’s surprised to find a Neverland that no longer seems to need him. The only person who truly missed Peter is Captain James Hook, who is delighted to have his old rival back. The oft-recommended trans man!Peter Pan/Hook romance novel. Please don't talk to me about this one as I haven't and can't read it for some personal trigger readings, but it's recommended all over and is well-loved for a reason!
FICTION: Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island - Treasure Island is of course, one of the archetypal adventure novels. What a lot of people might not know is that the TV series Black Sails is a prequel to Treasure Island! If you enjoyed Our Flag Means Death, you might be delighted to realise that the real life pirate Israel Hands features in Treasure Island, and fights with Jim Hawkins, the protagonist.
NON-FICTION: Sodomy and the Pirate Tradition: English Sea Rovers in the Seventeenth-Century Caribbean, by B.R. Burg - In Sodomy and the Pirate Tradition, historian B. R. Burg investigates the social and sexual world of these sea rovers, a tightly bound brotherhood of men engaged in almost constant warfare. What, he asks, did these men, often on the high seas for years at a time, do for sexual fulfillment? Buccaneer sexuality differed widely from that of other all- male institutions such as prisons, for it existed not within a regimented structure of rule, regulations, and oppressive supervision, but instead operated in a society in which widespread toleration of homosexuality was the norm and conditions encouraged its practice.
ESSAY: Our Flag Means Death and Queer Utopias at Sea, an essay by Seth LeJacq
TV Series:
Our Flag Means Death - Of course, duh! Our Flag Means Death, a queer romcom interpreting the historical relationship between Stede Bonnet, the Gentleman Pirate, and Edward Teach, Blackbeard, as a romance.
Black Sails - A "gritty" and brutal prequel to RL Stevenson's Treasure Island, exploring the tales of Long John Silver and how he came to be what he ultimately is in Treasure Island. There is a lot of gay shit in this and it's extremely anti-imperial in its outlook - with that said, I'm personally not a great fan of Black Sails to watch, for me personally it's either too upsetting or too dull to stick with, oscillating between the two extremes. If you haven't tried it and do want to, I do recommend sticking through at least the first season and seeing if you get into it! With that said, it's got particularly brutal onscreen treatment of its WOC, especially Max, a Black woman who is violently raped onscreen (as well as onscreen abuses of other women), and I would recommend treading with caution if this is something that will be difficult to watch.
Neverland - This miniseries is near and dear to my heart - it's not huge on the pirates, but it actually has Bob Hoskins reprising his 1991 role as Smee, and I find it to be an interesting and quite different exploration of the Peter Pan prequel that really explores class some. More importantly, it actually has Natives playing Natives, and features Q'orianka Kilcher as Aaya!
Movies:
Love, Death, & Robots: Bad Travelling (2022) - This is a short film that's part of the LD&R series, and it's really good nautical horror. That's all there is to it.
Master and Commander (2003) - Taika Waititi said this movie is his favourite romance movie, and he's so fucking right. Anyway, this movie is based off the first five of Patrick O'Brian's Aubreyad, and it's so loving and so gay.
Treasure Planet (2002) - There are so many adaptations of Treasure Island, but this is my favourite every single time, it's just so well-done, it's so full of care, it really captures the wonder and excitement of sailing and the sense of freedom, and honestly? Jim Hawkins is sooooo transmasculine, he even has an ugly shitty mullet haircut and a little gold earring, he is the blueprint, he is perfect. If piracy in space tickles your fancy, I also might recommend Space Pirate Captain Harlock (2013).
Pirates of the Carribean: The Black Pearl (2003), Dead Man's Chest (2006), and At World's End (2007) - Listen. Are there technically other POTC movies? Yes. Should you watch them? Oh, fuck no. I have seen On Stranger Tides and Dead Men Tell No Tales/Salazar's Revenge and let me tell you: you do not have to, you do not need to, and you do not want to. On Stranger Tides tried to tell me that Hector Barbossa fell in love with a woman. My man. Hector Barbossa. A woman!? Please! Anyway, I grew up on these movies and unfortunately they are overwhelmingly and unrealistically white - there are some really cool characters of colour and I especially love Tia Dalma. Remember not to watch these movies legally, by the way - watch them on an old cheap DVD or do some piracy yourself. Fuck Johnny Depp.
The Pirates of Penzance (1983) - This is an adaptation of the Gilbert and Sullivan opera, and it is so over the top, so ridiculous, so much fucking fun. Kevin Kline has some of the sexiest fits in this movie and so much thick, thatched chest hair, and the music is good, many of the jokes still land, and it's just fun.
Peter Pan (2003) - Don't watch the Disney Peter Pan. Never watch it, it's garbage, it's ugly, it invented a bunch of anti-Native racism that isn't in the already racist original text, and you know, fuck Disney. Is the 2003 Peter Pan perfect? No. But is it better? Yes. Jason Isaacs is so hot as Hook, and while I am not the biggest fan of PJ Hogan's take on the book that's all about Wendy wanting to fuck her own dad on top of cutting the Hook/Smee dynamic back significantly, the Neverland aesthetics and the silly piratical ones are a lot of fun.
Hook (1991) - Spielberg's sequel to Peter Pan is glorious for one reason and one reason only: Dustin Hoffman and Bob Hoskins were like, "hey, these two dudes are married. They're old queens in love!" and they played it like that, and they were so fucking right. Hoffman's Hook is so queer and so effete and so incredibly mentally ill and he is the biggest mood throughout, as is Smee trying to keep them both alive. I adore this movie to death, I really do.
Down Periscope (1996) - Okay. So. This movie is a little bit different. It's not set in the Golden Age of Piracy or even just after it - it's set in the 1990s, and is about a Yank Naval Captain doing wargames with other members of the navy. With that said, it's got a lot of pirate hijinks and a lot of found family dynamics with a lot of freaks and neurodivergents packing the crew - note that there's some misogynistic harassment in this for the only female crew member, but she's one of my favourite characters and she's so much fun, much like the rest of the crew. Listen. The captain has a tattoo on his dick. They all dress up as pirates while making one of their crew members walk the plank. Their ending credits feature the cast dancing and singing along with the Village People, to the iconic gay anthem, In The Navy. It's good, I swear.
And I've tried a bunch of pirate videogames, but none of them has measured up to Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. Unfortunately, this game is an Assassin's Creed game and all the AC plot stuff sucks, because that's what AC games are for.
When it's not doing their terrible meta plot in the "real world", though, this game has such excellent gameplay, it's great fun, and the soundtrack is tremendous. Even if you don't play the game, absolutely consider giving the sound track a listen, because it's just great!
An old album I would recommend is also the Robert Shaw Chorale Sea Shanties one! It's from 1960, and they do some really fun arrangements of different sea shanties - their Drunken Sailor is one of my absolute favourites!
If you'd like to see a different take on the sea shanties and would still love some more space piracy, I would also recommend Once Upon A Time (in Space), by the Mechanisms!
My Stuff
And separate to the general rec list above, here's some of my work that's relevant to my takes on queer pirates, and why I'm on the panel:

Yuletide Recs! 60 fics in 46 fandoms
This year was amazing. All three of the fics written for me were absolutely perfect in their own way, exactly what I hoped for, and there was a fourth that wasn't written for me but felt like it was, because it matched a long-term request I've had in multiple ficathons over the last several years. (I also wrote two fanfics, one assignment and one treat, and I'm curious if anyone spotted either as possibly coming from me.)
Here are the fics I received:

Bintumani Working in Freetown, Elsie gets a mysterious letter that sends her on a journey across Sierra Leone. Fandom: Rivers of London - Ben Aaronovitch

"I Double Dare You" Prologue
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Prologue: Columbus, Ohio, September 14, 1941
A Storm is Brewing
Leigh Spencer was enjoying the warm breeze blowing through her dorm room's window. Indian summer was in full swing. Spencer's radio was on and she was singing along with the Andrews Sisters as she was brushing her medium length naturally curly brunette hair.
Spencer, a trim 5'4" 18 year old with big green eyes, was already into her second year of college. She began taking college courses during the summer months of her junior and senior years in high school.
The intelligent, witty, sometimes acerbic journalism major had quite a temper when she was provoked. Although she acted like a lady, she could curse a blue streak when she was irate. Leigh learned her extensive vocabulary of four letter words from two male cousins who were close in age to her. Her close knit family lived in rural southeastern Ohio. Spencer's father was an elementary school principal and her mother was a housewife.
Leigh knew that she couldn't be a hard hitting news reporter, and that fact galled her. The only writing jobs a newspaper woman could hope to do were reports of weddings and society column reporting. That wasn't her cup of tea to say the least. After meeting with her academic advisor at the beginning of the current semester, Spencer was intending to become a journalism professor. If she kept her grades in the 4 to 3.2 range, she would qualify for a graduate school scholarship.
She was in her slip, deciding on which dress to wear to dinner when her roommate Debi came in, remarking,
"Leigh, you could be a singer on the radio! Did you ever have vocal lessons?
Spencer grinned as she pulled a blue dress over her head and put her arms through the sleeves. She told her tall, thin blonde friend,
" Thanks. No, I never took singing lessons."
Debi asked,
"Do you have a date with Grayson tonight?" Grayson O'Brian was her fiance. They met the previous summer when she worked as a sales clerk in the Lazarus department store in downtown Columbus. He noticed her when he was picking out a tie in the Men's Department. The seemingly shy muscular dark haired western Kentucky native was enrolled in Ohio State's medical school.
"Well, I don't know if it qualifies as a date. It's more like a last ditch effort for me. I am tired of Gray's bad moods and his temper. He has changed, and not for the better. I am cooking dinner for him tonight. If he is unpleasant again, he is getting his ring back. I'm beginning to believe that I am falling out of love with him. Besides, I think he's seeing someone else behind my back."
Debbie's blue eyes widened with shock.
"You would quit him, even after you..you know. How do you know there's another woman?"
Spencer looked at Debi, " First of all, the 'you know,' only happened once. It was nothing special. I can't believe that this physical act is what people get overwrought about. That doesn't mean that I have to stay with him the rest of my life! Secondly, Gray is evasive and I swear I smelled perfume the last time I was at his apartment. He doesn't wear Jungle Gardenia."
Debi thought for a moment and replied,"Ann Marie, on the next floor, said that it gets better after the first time. If that rat is two timing you, I don't blame you for wanting to quit him."
Leigh put on her shoes, open toed pumps and grabbed her purse.
"Glad you agree, Debi. See you later tonight." Spencer walked out of the dorm room, down the hall and took one flight of stairs to the ground floor. From there, she exited the dormitory, heading for a grocery store that was close by.
She purchased ingredients for a spaghetti dinner. A former roommate who came from an Italian family in Pittsburgh gave her a recipe for spaghetti sauce. It involved fresh tomatoes, olive oil, Italian sausage, onions, red and green bell peppers, oregano, garlic, a little salt and pepper plus some red wine.
Leigh wasn't old enough to purchase the wine, but she knew that Gray kept some in the kitchen of his apartment. He lived in a section of the OSU campus known as the "Doc Block." Medical students occupied two apartment buildings that sat side by side.
She walked to the door of an apartment on the ground floor, put the bag of groceries on the step, got the key out of her purse and opened the door.Once inside, Leigh shut the door and took the groceries into the kitchen. She placed her purse on the counter and began to prepare the sauce. Spencer recalled her former roommate saying,
"It's gravy, not sauce. At least that's what my folks and my Nonna call it." She often thought about Maria, who left school to get married after she got pregnant. Leigh recalled that her husband's name was Anthony Stoppa. She planned to write to Maria soon.
The sauce simmered for a few hours. Leigh had the table set and wine glasses in place. She turned on the radio for some company and entertainment while she waited for Gray to get back from his anatomy and physiology class. The latest hit, Green Eyes" began to play. She used to think of that song as 'their' song. Now, she felt nothing when she heard the lyrics.
Leigh looked at the clock and decided to put the water on for the pasta. Gray was running late. By the time the water came to a boil, Gray should be coming in. The news concluded on the radio and she heard that an incoming cold front would cause a thunderstorm.
By the time the pasta was cooked, Grayson arrived. He walked into the kitchen and kissed Leigh's cheek. She smelled alcohol on his breath and pulled back.
"OK, so I had a few drinks with my buddies after class."
Spencer said nothing, taking the pan of spaghetti to the sink and putting it into a strainer. She got a large bowl and placed the pasta in it. Leigh put the sauce in a bowl. Gray disliked salad and garlic bread so neither item was prepared.
Gray grabbed a plate, filled it with spaghetti and spooned on some sauce. He poured a glass of wine for himself and sat down to eat. Leigh opted on water instead of wine. She got spaghetti, sauce and sat down at the table. Music from the radio filled in the silence as they ate.
After supper was over, Gray got up from the table, walked to a cabinet that was over the sink, got out a bottle of whiskey, went to another cabinet and got out one glass. Both cabinet doors remained open as he took the bottle and glass to the living room. He poured some whiskey into the glass, setting the bottle on the floor. Then, he sat in a chair by the telephone.
Leigh noticed that Gray seemed distracted. She was also irritated that he hadn't said a word about supper.
"Gray, would it kill you to at least thank me for making your favorite meal?" She remained in the kitchen, debating if she would do the dishes or just leave them and Gray behind.
O'Brian looked at her with contempt,
"I ate it, didn't I? Do you want a medal? You women are all alike. You whine and bitch about everything. I don't have to take this crap from you!"
Leigh calmly replied,
"The same can be said to you. Gray, I think it's time for me to clarify a few things." Gray acted as if he hadn't heard her. Suddenly, the telephone rang.
Gray's demeanor changed after he answered the phone. Thunder rumbled in the distance as he smiled and said,
"I thought that you had forgotten about me, Sweetie." He continued to make small talk as Leigh realized that what she had suspected was true. She was relieved that there was someone else in the picture. Walking out on Gray would be easier than she thought.
The call ended and O'Brian smirked at Leigh. He was trying to get a rise out of her and was surprised that she neither shouted at him nor did she burst into tears.
Instead, Leigh got her purse, putting the strap over her right shoulder. She told Gray,
"Obviously, being engaged means nothing to you. I wish you luck with " Sweetie." I'm not even upset. What does that say about us?,"
She removed the engagement ring, a family heirloom, and carefully placed it on the kitchen counter. Spencer continued,
"Gray, this isn't remotely close to love and I'm done. No acrimony, no need to argue. "
O'Brian looked shocked for a moment. He was hoping for tears from Leigh, to hear her begging him to stay with her and ditch the other woman. He stood up and began walking toward the kitchen.
You're over reacting, Leigh! She's just a dalliance and she means nothing to me. My dad has women on the side and my mom knows it. It's just something men do. Now, calm down and put your ring on."
Spencer passed by Gray, heading for the door.
"I feel sorry for your mother. There's no way I will live like that and I am perfectly calm." The thunder got louder and drops of rain began to hit the windows. Leigh wanted to get back to the dorm before the storm intensified. She opened the door, ready to step outside.
Suddenly, Gray ran into the living room, pushing Leigh aside and locking the door.
"You don't walk out on me, you bitch!" Spencer walked back toward the door. Grayson slammed her against the locked door and the doorknob made contact with Leigh's lower back, causing a sharp pain.
Without thinking, Leigh slapped Gray hard enough to leave a red print in the shape of her hand on his cheek. She was stunned when O'Brian said,
"You asked for it!" His fist made contact with Spencer's left eye, knocking her to the floor. She pulled herself up and began to cry out of fear and anger.
Gray bellowed, "Shut up!" He immediately toned down his voice. If a neighbor called the police and an arrest was made, he would be kicked out of medical school. O'Brian lowered his voice and stood in front of the door,
"Gray, stop! For God's sake, just let me leave! I won't involve the police, I just want to go back to my room."
"Damn women think they can do whatever they want if they turn on the water works. "
Leigh tried to stop crying.
O'Brian was enraged and beyond reason. He grabbed Leigh's left arm, roughly twisting it and bruising the skin beneath the short sleeve of her dress, telling Spencer,
"I said you aren't leaving!" Leigh twisted out of his grasp and tried to get one knee up to give him a disabling blow in his groin area. Gray stepped back in time to avoid contact with her knee. His voice became quiet and his brown eyes became expressionless.
"Try that again and I promise that I will kill you." The rain began to pour. Spencer was terrified but she made herself focus on survival. She had to find a way to get outside. Leigh suddenly recalled that Gray liked to have the bedroom window open. She had to find a way to get to the bedroom which was down a narrow hall behind the couch in the living room, the second door on the right.
Leigh had a burst of inspiration.
"Gray, maybe I was a little too hasty about wanting to leave you. Can we talk about this? "
O"Brian felt as if he had won. He thought to himself,
"Typical weak woman. I know how to control her."
He turned around to sit in the chair,
"That's more like it. Sure, we can talk."
Leigh was sickened by the idea, but she had to play the role of the submissive woman to the hilt if she wanted to survive.
"That's so good to hear. First, let me try to look human again. My mascara is running and I need to look good for my man."
"Go right ahead, Sweetie." Leigh headed calmly down the hall and stepped into the bathroom. She was so glad that her purse remained on her right shoulder. Spencer had a few cosmetic items in the purse, along with the key to her dorm room.
Gray smirked at her reply.
She splashed some cold water on her face. Her left eye was almost swollen shut and it was rapidly turning black. Then, she heard the phone ring again.
Gray answered the phone,
"Hi, Sweetie! What a nice surprise!"
Leigh couldn't believe her good luck. This gave her a chance to get to the bedroom to escape. She quietly crept out of the bathroom and carefully walked into Gray's bedroom. Then, she shut the door and locked it behind her.
O'Brian told the young woman on the phone,
"Someone's at the door, Honey. I've got to go."
Leigh heard him and thought,
"Just what I don't need. I have to move faster to get out of here." She walked toward the window, which was open. Spencer breathed a sigh of relief. Her relief was short lived.
Unknown to Leigh, Grayson had recently purchased a pistol. He ran into the bathroom, quickly opened a drawer and took out the loaded weapon.
She screamed as Gray fired the gun through the door, the bullet narrowly missing Leigh's neck as it hit the frame of the window.
When Spencer kicked out the screen in the window, the heel broke off of her right shoe. She thought,
"Forget the shoes!" Spencer thought, kicking off the pumps and diving through the window. She landed by the side of the apartment building almost face down in a quickly forming puddle. Leigh picked up her purse and ran down the sidewalk at top speed, skidding in the water from the deluge of rain. Looking ahead, Leigh spotted a police car stopped at a red light.
She bolted to the passenger door, pulled it open and jumped inside. The startled officer looked at the bedraggled, rain soaked young woman in the car, asking her,
" What's going on, Miss? Are you OK?"
Leigh shouted,
"Go, go! He's trying to kill me!" Noticing the black eye, the officer drove away, getting information from Leigh as they were en route to the police station. Gray got to the sidewalk outside the apartment building, the gun still clutched in his hand, swearing as he saw Spencer in a police car.
Once inside the police station, the officer got a clean blanket from an empty jail cell and gave it to Leigh. She wrapped it around herself and gratefully accepted a cup of coffee from another police officer. When she was asked if she wanted to press charges Spencer gave her consent.
Her parents were contacted and they made the drive to Columbus to pick up Leigh and her belongings. The bursar's office issued a full refund of her tuition money. Grayson was expelled from medical school and he returned to western Kentucky.
After Pearl Harbor was attacked, Leigh decided to join the WAACs. They would provide a job and housing, plus she would be safer there than returning to school or staying at home because there was no way for Gray to find her. O'Brian became a medic and trained at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky.
Leigh trained in Iowa and upon completion of her training, she was sent to Army offices in Toccoa, Georgia in the summer of 1942. An entire Army camp called Camp Toombs, was purchased and renamed Camp Toccoa by the federal government to train young men for a new division of the Army, the Airborne, to become paratroopers. These soldiers would jump out of airplanes and parachute into enemy territory.

Big City Greens: The Movie & Primos To Premiere On The Same Night On Summer
It seems that Disney is planning to premiere both Big City Greens: The Movie & Primos on the same summer night according to EIRD.
Makes sense, Primos is one of the many upcoming Disney Channel shows created by Big City Greens alumnis.
BTW Disney hasn't given any updates on Big City Greens: The Movie since it's announcement on January 2022 and hasn't announced a new Disney TVA series since June 2023 since "STUGO", Maybe we will get news on both on the TCA Winter Press Tour 2024, darn it i wish Disney attended Wondercon.

I'm the person I am today partially due to your work. I'm saddened, but take comfort in knowing you've been reunited with the family that went before you, and that is a beautiful thing. Rest well Anne. Thank you. 🖤

So I’m re-reading Persuasion in-between Aubrey-Maturin audiobooks, and I’m just shocked and delighted again by how perfectly Jack and Stephen are a gender mirror for Jane Austen?  How almost LITERALLY the Aubreyad IS what the background men are doing while Jane Austen’s heroines have their adventures?
Take Post-Captain as the most clear example.  Jack and Stephen are set “on the beach” during the brief peace with France, and they decide to rent a bachelor house together in the country, which excites Great Comment among the ladies of the small town.
I can literally HEAR Sophie’s mother pulling a Mrs. Bennett, because Melbury Lodge is let at last?  And the girls at Mapes Court, having no father to stand in for a Mr. Bennett figure, have to rely on their elderly neighbor Admiral Haddock “who had been sadly missed since the unexpected arrival of a Captain Aubrey of the Navy - a captain who had taken Melbury Lodge and who was therefore within their sphere of influence, but about whom they knew nothing and upon whom (he being a bachelor) they, as ladies, could not call.”  Jack gives a ball in the new house he has rented!  He meets his future wife at that ball, and MARKS IT for destiny by dancing with her many times!  But alas, Jack loses his fortune and his Aspirations (TM) to Sophie’s hand are firmly squelched by her villainous self-interested old mother!
Compare that with Captain Wentworth’s backstory from Persuasion:
“Captain Wentworth had no fortune.  He had been lucky in his profession; but spending freely, what had come freely, had realized nothing.  But he was confident that he should soon be rich: full of life and ardour, he knew that he should soon have a ship, and soon be on a station that would lead to everything he wanted.  He had always been lucky; he knew he should be so still...He was brilliant, he was headstrong.  ...[Lady Russell] deprecated the connexion in every light.  Such opposition, as these feelings produced, was more than Anne could combat.”
LIKE.  IT’S SO WEIRDLY JOYFUL to come back to Jane Austen after the Aubreyad, and hear about Sir Eliot letting his house to a rear-admiral of the white, and KNOWING with so much more depth the significance of the naval terms?  The details of what Captain Wentworth must have gone through while he was away from Anne all those years?  And then to read the Aubreyad KNOWING what Sophie and Diana must be going through while Jack and Stephen are away having naval adventures!
The only lacking element in the parallel is Captain Wentworth not having a very dear Particular Friend who walks around in slovenly clothes and releases 60,000 bees into the great cabin.

I'm going to treat your spicy take as a list of reading recommendations because I like your comic and I think I like your tastes as well.
Are there any specific works from those authors that stand out to you?
I finished a reread of Wise Blood by Flannery O'Connor recently and that book really is astounding. One of my top five of all time. Otherwise check out Butcher Boy by Patrick McCabe, Post Captain by O'Brian, Treasure Island (yes, that one), Interview with a Vampire and Cry to Heaven by Anne Rice, Billy Budd, Huckleberry Finn, Hamlet... I'm just gonna sound like a high school English teacher here... ;)

I've only ever read fiction before but I've been wanting to try some non fiction too, so both I guess.
Hmm ok so for fiction:
Stuff written during the Regency:
Evelina by Fanny Burney. Epistolary novel and coming-of-age novel about a young country miss who goes to London and has to learn social rules. I don't think Burney's stuff aged as well as Austen's, but this one if my favorite of hers.
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. The OG. The beginning of science fiction, arguably, depending on how you feel about Margaret Cavendish's The Blazing World, or that thing Cyrano de Bergerac wrote where he says he flew to the moon using some geese.
Manfred by Lord Byron. I have a real soft spot for this uber dramatic, Gothic closet drama in verse. It is really nuts, but a real fun read.
Endymion by John Keats. Another epic poem, one which gives us "a thing of beauty is a joy forever." Contains what I think are some of Keats's most beautiful images outside La Belle Dame Sans Merci and Ode to a Nightingale.
Honorary mention to Sir Walter Scott's Ivanhoe here, which I loved as a kid, but I suspect did not age well. It's one of those novels that was really progressive, for 1819, in its treatment of Jewish characters, but I'm willing to bet that if you looked at it now, it would be Bad.
Stuff written about the Regency, much later:
Life-Mask, by Emma Donoghue. Warning, this book is extremely long and slow-paced, but so, so good. So chockful of details and complicated relationships between historical figures, and insights into the world of the Regency stage. Focuses half on the actress Elizabeth Farren and her rise in the world and eventual marriage to an Earl, and half on the lesbian sculptor Anne Damer.
Cotillion by Georgette Heyer. It's a silly, fluffy romp about a spunky ingenue getting a fashionable himbo to help her have a Season in London. Great escapism.
Master and Commander by Patrick O'Brian. The first of a twenty book epic adventure series, and the one you really need to read if you want to understand where everyone is on the ship at any given point in time.
Horatio Hornblower by C. S. Forster. Another epic naval adventure series. Not quite as fun as Master and Commander as the main character's very gloomy and depressed all the time, but my introduction to the Age of Sail, so it still holds a place in my heart.
In terms of Regency romances, I'm fond of Tessa Dare, Sarah MacLean, and Carla Kelly, but their historical accuracy is... suspect at times.
Honorable mention to the Sharpe series by Bernard Cornwall, which I devoured, and love for their battle sequences... but every single female character gets a really raw deal in every single book. The BBC series is real fun, and features a young Sean Bean wearing very tight pants and shouting, "Bastard!" across the Iberian Peninsula.
Non-fiction:
Dress in the Age of Jane Austen by Hilary Davidson is my favorite book about the Regency ever, ever, ever. It's very serious fashion history that manages to touch on every aspect of Regency life. SO HELPFUL for fic stuff.
Black London by Gretchen Gerzina. Available free as an ebook!
I'm really fond of Elizabeth Longford's two volume biography of Wellington, Kate Williams’s biography of Emma, Lady Hamilton, and William Hague's biographies of William Pitt the Younger (Prime Minister for the early part of the Regency) and William Wilberforce (British politician credited with ending slavery). I have a love-hate relationship to Amanda Foreman's biography of Georgianna, Duchess of Devonshire because it's a gripping read, but it felt at times like the author was really in love with her subject and let that bias her interpretation of sources.
