It was naughty.

Beatrice knew he’d like these new outfits, something to celebrate once the ceremony was over thanks to a certain fashion designer friend of hers -’have fun,darling!’. Now all she had to do was make sure she did everything, tomorrow was going to be a very very busy day.

She was busy grabbing some snacks in the grocery store when she felt a presence next to her. She blinks,then slowly turns her head and widens her eyes, “...oh…hello.” John…John? Here? Oh how joyful was to see her husband’s weird friend from school here,right now, fantastic, “...hi…um,can I help you?”

"Hey there, Bea! Fancy meeting you here!" John exclaimed, his voice echoing through the aisles of the store.

Beatrice couldn't help but smile awkwardly, leaning away from him briefly "John, what are you doing here?" she asked, genuinely curious…and not suspicious at all.

"Oh, you know me,"- she did not-John replied with a grin, his hands stuffed in the pockets of his faded jeans. "Just out and about, exploring the wonders of the grocery store. Plus, I heard they have some killer deals on avocados today!"

"Of course, avocados," she remarked, "I…guess they do…Well, I hope you find what you're looking for."

John grinned, his eyes twinkling with mischief. "Oh, I'm sure I will," he said cryptically, before glancing around the aisle as if searching for something. "So, how have you been, Beatrice? I mean,we didn’t talk back when I went to your house to see Brad,hah." John asked, his tone casual as he leaned against the nearby shelf. "I don’t know much about ya.”

She held back a frown.

Why would he.

“...I’ve been good. Busy.” she says quietly, not giving him enough info to go beyond that, “With…everything.”

"Busy, huh? Must be with those adorable twins of yours," John remarked, his tone laced with curiosity. "Brad told me all about them. How are they doing?"

. "They're doing great, thanks for asking," she replied, grateful for the chance to talk about her children. "Growing like weeds, honestly. Gavin already has a tooth coming in, and Aurora… well, she's a little troublemaker.”

“And your oldest is one,right? Their oldest sister.”

“...yes.”

John nodded, “Hey, you know what we should do? A double date! Me,Brad, you and my wife!” oh no, “And the kids, we have kids too.”

“...oh…really?”

“Yeah! It’d be fun! And you know, maybe I can convince him to go to the reunion after all.”

Beatrice’s eyes narrowed a bit and she chewed her cheek. She doubt that Brad would want that, because one: the last time they had a double date he had to be part of a huge investigation because of another aviator being jealous and petty…and two: he didn’t like how John showed up again,so she doubted, “Sure, I'll talk to Brad about it," she said diplomatically, not wanting to outright reject John's invitation. "It…could be fun."

John grinned, seemingly pleased with her response. "Great! I'll let Sarah know, she'll be thrilled," he said enthusiastically. "And don't worry, I'll make sure Brad agrees to come to the reunion. It'll be just like old times!"

Beatrice forced another smile, inwardly cringing at the thought "Sounds…sounds like a plan," she said, trying to sound enthusiastic. "Well, I should probably finish up here. It was nice seeing you, John."

John nodded, stepping back to give her some space. "Likewise, Bea. I'll see you around," he said with a wave before turning to walk away.

As Beatrice watched him go, she just waited until he was out of sight to pull out her phone and call Rooster. If there’s one thing her husband would want to know, was that she saw John. She knew he was with the kids, but this couldn’t wait until she got home.

"Hey, gorgeous," Bradley's voice came through the line, filled with warmth and affection.

"Roos, it's me," Beatrice said quickly, not bothering with pleasantries. "You'll never guess who I just ran into at the grocery store."

"Who?"

"John," Beatrice replied, her voice tight with frustration. "He was here, Roos. Just...casually shopping for avocados."

There was a brief pause on the other end of the line before he spoke again, "John?What??”

Beatrice sighed, running a hand through her hair in frustration. "Yeah," she reassured him. "But it was just...weird. He was acting all friendly, asking about the kids and suggesting we do a double date with him and…um…Sarah. That’s his wife’s name."

“Hes married???”

“Apparently.”

Rooster’s voice hardened, “Woah,woah,woah,roll back, what?”

"Yeah, apparently he's married," she confirmed, "And he wants us to go on a double date with him and his wife. Plus, he mentioned something about convincing you to go to the reunion."

"Absolutely not. We're not going on a double date with John and his wife, and I'm definitely not going to the reunion."

Beatrice nodded, “I know,Roos," she said, her voice softening. "I just wanted to give you a heads up."

"Thanks, baby," Rooster replied, "I appreciate it. Just...he just showed up?”

"Yeah, just out of nowhere," she confirmed, her mind still reeling from the encounter. "He seemed...too eager, you know? And the way he mentioned the reunion,again, it felt like he was trying to manipulate the situation."

Rooster let out a frustrated sigh on the other end of the line. "Right…I still don’t like it.”

Beatrice nodded, even though Rooster couldn't see her. "I know, Roos," she said quietly, her voice filled with concern. "But what do we do? He's…your..friend kind of?...he did a lot of weird stuff to contact you,honey.”

“Yeah…”

“What do you wanna do then?”

“Honestly?I’d rather just have my promotion ceremony tomorrow and forget about him, even if he showed up,it doesn’t mean I’ll care.” he scoffs, “And you are okay,right?”

Beatrice took a moment to gather her thoughts before responding, her mind still racing with everything that had just happened. "Yeah, I'm okay," she reassured him, her voice steady despite the lingering unease. "Just...caught me off guard, you know? But I'm fine."

"Alright, just...be careful, okay? I don't trust that guy."

"I will, Roos," Beatrice promised, feeling a surge of gratitude for her husband's concern. "And you too. If he shows up at the ceremony tomorrow..."

"Doubtful,but he won't ruin this for me," Rooster interjected firmly, his tone leaving no room for argument. "Tomorrow is about us, about celebrating my promotion. He can't take that away from us."

Beatrice smiled, feeling a rush of pride for her husband's determination. "You're right," she agreed wholeheartedly. "Nothing and no one can change that." she looks around a bit, “I’m gonna pay for everything,then I’ll go home okay?”

“Okay,gorgeous. I love you.”

“Love you too.”

Rooster leans back on the couch, the kids were busy on the playmat with the dogs surrounding them and he just had to figure out how to deal with the silence. He closes his eyes for a second, still digesting Beatrice’s calls only for his eyes to snap open when the doorbell rings and Eleanor - being the big bad guard dog she was - skitters to it, almost slamming herself on the glass.

Thankfully the kids were already used to her barking, so the only thing that happened was their eyes would turn to Eleanor but they wouldn’t cry. Nicole,being the oldest, basically turned her torso to the door before looking at her dad, “Dada, dow?” she points

Rooster smiled at Nicole's eagerness, appreciating her attempt at communication. "Dada will check, sweetheart," he replied gently, getting up from the couch and walking over to the door.

Eleanor continued to bark as Rooster reached for the doorknob. He opened the door to find the familiar face of…Thomas. The two men stare at each other for a few seconds and Rooster’s eyes narrowed “...can I help you?” it seems like life wanted to throw his and Bea’s past together. His was John’s while Bea’s was Thomas.

With the exception that John was his friend from high school and Thomas was Bea’s college classmate, it was very similar.

“...uh…hey.”

“Hello.”

Thomas gulped, “Sorry for showing up like this I uh,” he clears his throat, “I was just passing by.”

Rooster's gaze remained fixed on Thomas, his expression unreadable as he assessed the unexpected visitor. Despite his initial surprise, he maintained a composed demeanor, masking any hints of discomfort or curiosity.

"Passing by, huh?" Rooster echoed, his tone laced with skepticism. "Seems like quite the coincidence."

Thomas shifted uncomfortably under Rooster's scrutinizing gaze, his eyes darting around as if searching for an escape route. "Yeah, well... I was in the neighborhood," he stammered, his voice slightly shaky. "Just thought I'd, uh, drop by and say hello."

Rooster's eyebrows raised skeptically at Thomas's explanation, but he didn't press the issue further. “Right. To my wife?”

Rooster's question hung in the air, the tension between the two men heavy. Thomas shifted uncomfortably, his eyes darting around as if searching for the right words.

"Um, yeah," Thomas replied, his voice faltering slightly. "I mean, I thought I'd say hi to Beatrice. It's been a while since we caught up, you know?"

Rooster's jaw clenched slightly at Thomas's words, a flicker of irritation crossing his features. Despite his efforts to remain composed, he couldn't shake the feeling of unease that settled in the pit of his stomach. "Yeah, it has been a while, you know a couple of weeks" Rooster remarked coolly, his gaze never wavering from Thomas's face. "But you know, dropping by unannounced like this... It's a bit unexpected, don't you think?"

Thomas shifted uncomfortably under Rooster's scrutiny, a sheepish expression crossing his features. "Yeah, I guess so," he admitted, his voice tinged with embarrassment. "I just... I wanted to see how Beatrice was doing, you know? Catch up with an old friend."

“You two weren’t friends.”

‘Well–”

“...Thomas,word of advice.” Rooster begins, “I’d like for you to leave. You know, go away.”

Thomas visibly flinched, his shoulders slumping slightly as if struck by Rooster's directness. He swallowed hard, his eyes shifting away from Rooster's intense gaze for a moment before returning, a mixture of guilt and uncertainty etched on his face.

"I understand," Thomas said quietly, his voice tinged with resignation. "I'll go. Sorry for intruding."

Rooster simply nodded, his expression firm as he stepped back to allow Thomas space to leave. He watched in silence as Thomas turned on his heels and walked away, his steps heavy with the weight of Rooster's dismissal.

Once Thomas was out of sight, Rooster closed the door behind him, leaning against it for a moment as he let out a sigh of relief. He doesn’t know what the hell he wanted, but he didn’t needed that right now.

He knew that Thomas had somehow decided to flirt with Bea, he knew it, He knew it. But his wife was anything but unfaithful. She was wonderful and sweet and kind and if anyone dared to do anything to her he’d break some necks.

Not literally, cause he had people to live for, but…figuratively.

Rooster took a moment to compose himself,and as he made his way back to the living room, Rooster found himself lost in thought, his mind replaying the encounter with Thomas over and over again.

He couldn't understand why Thomas would choose now of all times to drop by unannounced. It didn't make sense, and Rooster couldn't shake the feeling that John also showed up out of nowhere.

Fuck.

He rubbed his eyes, “Kids,” he begins, “Let dada show you the wonders of video gaming. I think we all need it.”

WIP Tag Game!

This is sorta smth i track regularly? but i have it all sorted by word count akdgjkajdg it's part of my progress tracker server w some friends. Adding words is the easiest way to track 'working on a project' so that's what i do! I also have a (separate) doc in my drive folder that tracks just, general prompts, so when i have ideas i slap them in there.

Current (Teen Wolf) WIPs:

TriReign: Shepherd, Lamb, Wolf: small outline, chapters 1-4 complete, 5 wip - 16,575 - Sterek, Medieval Fantasy, Arranged Marriage, Omegaverse, Political Drama, Sex and Politics, Duty and Honor and Subterfuge, etc. my current current current WIP. Baseball AU: Collab? outline - 331. MOSTLY this is just. a Roster and some thoughts about a general plot concept. I want to illustrate this but i can't do a comic. It's also a Sterek concept. FratBoi Stiles x RA!Derek: 52 - this is just straight up a PWP with the prompt borrowed from a TWT moot that ive been meaning to work on for ages and just haven't yet. Higher Education 2: 2,821 Sciles, trans!Stiles, post-canon college AU. Also PWP, but also my gross unhygenic sloppy AU kinda. it's just. its grossnasty wet n sloppy porn. i wanted to finish this and then write a Third part for Sciles week this year and i didn't. whoops There's a Werewolf Tradition for That: 72 - Sterek didn't know they were dating AU. Alive!Hales but Werewolves are still a secret. Stiles and Derek are good friends and roommates, they're both idiots pining for each other, and out of the blue Derek's Mom sends them a formal invitation to celebrate their engagement. Stiles doesn't even know Derek's a werewolf. total ROMCOM, kinda inspired by My Big Fat Greek Wedding, but only in Vibes. Lone Wolf Wild West AU: Chapters 1, 2 posted, not outline - 3,670. Sterek, Lone Ranger!Derek, son of the sheriff Stiles. Mystery, adventure, romance. I miss cowboy...

Somewhere in here I will also put my Collabang fic and any other events i sign up for, because I'm gonna have to pause my major WIPs to work on them lol

1920's Mafia AU: Outline only - 1313 - Stiles is a city detective, the sheriff is the Police Commissioner, this takes place in Los Angeles. There are tunnels running all through the city, albeit underneath (real). There's been an uptick in gang activity lately. Stiles secretly 'runs' by which i mean, owns and protect, but isn't involved in Actually Running, an underground speakeasy in the heart of the city. He doesn't let any gangs runs their trouble on his turf. Until one day, a Hale is shot by an Argent right outside his doors. Sterek SuperBat ComicCon MeetCute: WIP One Shot - 1,049 Inspired by MultiE's art. nerd x nerd solidarity Sciles Ancient Greece AU: 192 - this is a friggin poem and is probably gonna stay a poem. New! Sex For Work: Parts 1, 2, 3, 4 - 23,228. Part 5? Sterek BDSM CEO x Personal Assistant AU. Originally intended to be kinky prompt fill series but Caught Plot. I meant to rewrite it last month to convert it into a standalone story, but uhhhh didn't. I DID do reformatting though. I just need to get writing on it again, but i tend to be kinda singleminded.

Other Fandom WIPs:

Big Blue Boyscout: 47 - Superman x Nightwing, xenophilia fic. "He's Big and Blue in more ways than one..." Bruce Wayne Visits Smallville: 685 - I got distracted while bingeing smallville for the first time and haven't gone back, but this was just supposed to be a one shot but my outline grew legs DP/YJ Crossover: 220 - this is more of a concept than a real specific fic, but i REALLY like comparing danny phantom to specifically the young justice animated series, and i wanted to try and come up with a cohesive clone comparison plot, rather than just making it a lil joke. Maybe it'll be Danny x Conner because himbo tee shirt conner is my baby boy baby boy Not So Blushing, Not So Virgin: 40 - SuperBat role reversal where everyone expects clark to be this sweet inexperienced things and then he absolutely blows bruce's back out.

Hiatus Projects:

Universal Law of Gravitation: Chapter 1 WIP, significant outline - 3,080 - Sterek Lifetime fic. I wrote out this huge long super comprehensive timeline and got super caught up in it. It's supposed to be about how, despite their best efforts, Stiles and Derek just can't stay apart, so there are a ton of messy breakups and fights in between. I just never put together an actual proper Plot, so when i started writing it, i got SUPER bored. It has a playlist! and i made a bunch of pseudo-science chapter titles hehe A Fever You Can't Sweat Out: Chapter 1 posted, Chapter 2 WIP, significant outline - 9,911 - Sterek, Marrish, Scallison, post-canon AU, surprise mpreg! Similarly to ULG, i wrote out a huge big timeline and outline and got super nitty gritty into the details, but literally Chapter One i went Off Track and it just killed my motivation. It's HUGELY ensemble, and i picked out jobs and hobbies for like 12 people to all live in a big ol estate together. It also suffered from "world building but no plot", but i DID try to make a plot, it just. wasn't good haha. The entire concept is, Lydia gets pregnant which makes Allison baby crazy so she gets pregnant and Stiles wants a baby so, so bad, but he's dating dating/married to Derek and therefore would have to adopt or something, but he wants it so bad he magics himself up a contraception.

Prompts!

Derek is moody, Stiles teases him about the fact he like, never smiles. Kisses him on a whim to get a rise out of him. And then proceeds to have a existential crisis after because "oh shit did he just kiss DEREK".

20 questions for fic writers!

1. How many works do you have on AO3?

28, though one was a round robin where I only wrote one of the chapters.

2. What’s your total AO3 word count?

838, 380. Subtracting Birthday Man (the round robin fic), I've written, by myself, 799, 248. I'm not surprised. I'm not good at brevity. (And I have over a hundred thousand words in unpublished fics right now 😅)

3. What fandoms do you write for?

Only Carry On, though I've made a habit of sticking Simon and Baz into fandom loves of my youth.

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

Oh, Have You Seen The Fairies Dance, my CORB from two years ago, writing to art by @krisrix. 562 Kudos

Playing With Fire, Treading Thin Ice, my pinch-hit CORB, also from two years ago (I sense a trend), writing to art by @steppjes. 453 kudos

Back To Start, my Simon youthens Baz into a baby fic, 447 kudos

A Fucked Up Cinderella Story, a Simon as escort fic, and my first collaboration with my dear friend (and a brilliant artist), @frjsti. 339 kudos.

A Real Doll, my first real PWP (ok, it sort of has a plot) (a very thin one), written for @captain-aralias's Monster Under the Bed Fest, 331 kudos.

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

Yes! It means a lot to me to hear how folk enjoyed my work, and I appreciate how much effort it takes to reach out sometimes, so I want to show my appreciation. I should be better at commenting myself!

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Readers nearly burned me at the stake over my ending to The Blue and The Gray, where Simon rides away with his Union troop, leaving Baz behind at his plantation home. Even the 'happy ending' epilogue I wrote, to get them back together, is bittersweet, because Simon is damaged from the war and it will be a long road to recovery (or at least the length of the Oregon Trail 😉) (If you know, you know).

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

I only do happy endings, but, like Ashton, I tend towards angst a lot of the time. So I think that my most meaningful happy ending is in New Year, New Me, which takes Simon and Baz literal to the end, of their long lives together (with a gorgeous song written by @moodandmist and @cutestkilla!)

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Not yet! I've gotten a few corrections, which I honestly don't mind. I'd rather be corrected than leave a glaring error in a fic. I agree with Ashton, this is an incredibly kind fandom.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Uh <looks side to side shiftily> yes? Like, a lot? It's funny, because I'm ace, but I find all the ways humans can relate to one another through sex fascinating, even if I don't need those things for myself. I'd say I write mostly bonding through sex? Occasional fucking just 'cause it's fun, but mostly soulful, loving sex.

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

Not crossovers precisely, (I don't mix in characters from other fandoms) but I'm extremely guilty of throwing SnowBaz into any story, show, or movie I've loved and putting them through their paces:

The Watford Games: Simon and Baz in a Hunger Games Scenario

The White Chapel: Simon replacing Olivia Newton John in the movie Xanadu

The Snow Fox: (unfinished) Simon as the Francis Marion Character in the old Disney TV show, the Swamp Fox.

Episode 2: The Naked Next, (gift fic for @raenestee) (I blame this one on @facewithoutheart), Simon and Baz in the Star Trek Universe.

and, Stars, Flowers, and Children, an unpublished (part done) fic set in the universe of the movie the Blue Lagoon, and To Heal a Broken Mind, an unpublished (nearly finished) fic set in a scenario similar to the TV show House MD.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Fingers crossed, but no, I don't think so. Probably hard to pass off a seventy thousand word fic as your own that you just popped up with out of nowhere.

Only the round robin fic, Birthday Man, where each of several fic writers wrote a chapter for Simon's birthday celebration, and the Star Trek Universe fic, The Naked Next (linked above). But I'd definitely give co-writer credit to many of the fandom artists I've worked with, because their work either inspired my words, or they even helped guide the evolution of the fic in the background. I especially have to give credit to @krisrix, @ivelovedhimthroughworse, @frjsti, and @artsyunderstudy for being brilliant at helping me flesh out the fics they did art for!

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

This is a tough one because I've (so far) never not finished a fic I've committed to (I've got a few paragraphs of a few random ideas in my files, but nothing I ever advertised or put much effort into). But I'm also perpetually in the middle of at least five or six fics, so leaving one dangling remains possible, even if I desperately hope it won't happen. I guess I'll mention Westward Son here, because though it ought to be finished in the next couple of weeks, it took me two fucking years to get there!

16. What are your writing strengths?

I don't get writer's block. I think my habit of fic jumping helps with this; if one fic is dragging, I can spend more time on another until words start to flow for the first one again. I do force myself to write at least a sentence every couple of days, even on the draggy fics, though. I think I'm decent at characterization? Especially Simon, because I identify with his way of thinking a lot. I also think I'm decent at giving the reader a strong visual of what's going on in a scene (hopefully).

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Plot and tech. I can write plot, but not snappy, quickly resolved ones. For me to find my way to the end of a plot usually takes several thousand words. And that's a weakness, not being able to write short. I don't know how to be interesting in small bites, I guess. And tech: I'm intimidated by incorporating modern tech like social media, etc. in my fics. I always feel like I can't format it correctly or make it look/sound realistic enough, so I tend to avoid fic ideas that are tech based, like text fics or social media fics. Aaaaand now I'm writing a fic based in Tiktok, a platform I do NOT know well. Pray for me.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I've done it once (in The Blue and The Gray), but I'm nervous about it. I think I'm afraid of misinterpreting a connotation of a word or phrase. I researched extensively for the Spanish lullaby in The Blue and the Gray, and even the Greek and Latin phrases in Back to Start and The Watford Games. I don't mind it in fics, so long as the meaning isn't integral to the scene (like using French swears in a fic set in French Canada) (@bazzybelle, I'm looking at you!). If the meaning is integral, I tend to prefer the translations be not far away (like at the end of the fic), but rather just a few lines down (like at the end of a chapter), because it's frustrating having to jump back and forth to get meaning from what I'm reading.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

CSI, on fanfic.net. But I only wrote one fic. Don't look for it. I didn't have this username and I'm not interested in reliving that part of my life 😆

20. Favorite fic you’ve written?

I think it will always be Back to Start (linked above). I still love the premise and it was the first fic that made me feel like a real writer. You don't forget that feeling. It's my baby.

Speaking of your fics being worth a few books at least… I may happen to know bc of ficbinding reasons that in 11pt garamond with chapter title banners and decorative breaks and dropkeys etc part 1 of ACoFD (1-24) is ~250 pages and part 2 (25-51) is ~331 pages right now, so pretty great book sizes! And then there’s LVER at ~ 245 pages right now, plus everything else you’ve written too! So… yeah 😅 definitely worth quite a few books!!!

Ramble#11

This month's episode we focus on Naoki Urasawa, a living manga legend, a true goat of the medium and my number 1 favourite mangaka. Ever since I started this podcast, at least one episode on him was inevitable and even if I don't stick the landing I hope this encourages someone to go check out and even support his brilliant pieces of art.

I'll be following the usual format of things read this month and then going over older reads, this time going from least to most favourite. Afterwards in what I'd call a part 2 I'll be doing a bit of off the cuff ranting.

So without further adieu, let's get into it!

Urasawa works read this month:

Asadora! (2018 - present with 37 english translated chapters):

A young girl named Asa has her home town destroyed by a Kaiju that only she saw. For those unfamiliar with the term Kaiju, it's basically the genre of film centered around giant monsters, think Godzilla. Anyways, years later, after training to be a pilot so she can track the monster down as she's its only living witness, she's approached by a certain organization that's been tracking the beast, so she can be trained to defend the country.

Not really a first time read but the first time I checked it out in 2020 there was only like 15/20 chapters out so with there being like twice that now I figured I could put it as new + bite me

Not much to say as again there's not that many chapters but it was my first time seeing a female lead from urasawa and I thought it was cool that the first page of the first chapter set the time frame for this world threatening disaster as 2020, which was when I picked it up and around the time COVID kicked off, even though that chapter itself came out in 2018.

Yawara! (1986 - 1993) 331 chapters total but only 92 in English:

Trained by her 8 time national judo champion grandad to get an Olympic gold, Yawara has been doing judo since she could walk. But as she enters the springtime of her youth, she just wants to be a regular, cute and fashionable girl.

Now I figure some of you may be wondering "What's the problem? Why can't she have both?". Well firstly, you know fiction, there's no story without conflict no matter how ridiculous. But as the mc would put it, judo just isn't cute!

She thinks she'll be unapproachable if she becomes known for grappling and throwing people around which tbh is fair but if you know anything about training to be an athlete, especially an Olympic level athlete, the time dedicated to training is no small thing. In the manga her grandad makes her train every day starting at 6am before she goes to school then after school they train again at 6pm.

Again not the very first time I read it, basically I started like a year ago but only read like 5 chapters then got upset that it wasn't fully translated. Cause I figured if it's been complete since 1993 and in 2022 there's only 92 chapters translated I'd be blue balling myself to hell with what I assumed would be another urasawa great (side note, more reason for learning Japanese so I can be a translator)

And I'm feeling bittersweet in being correct in my thinking because I really really dug it. Very neat aesthetic I've gotta say as urasawa plays up yawara trying to be cute and dressing up and so forth. It was also my first time seeing urasawa not doing mystery, as Yawara is a fun light-hearted slice of life but it still has a great cast of distinctive characters with brilliant dynamics just as I've come to expect from all of urasawa's works.

Master Keaton (1988 - 1994) 144ch:

I'm just gonna go with the final volume's description here as it's pretty spot on

When the wall that separated the East and West falls, the twentieth century comes to an end and brings radical changes to the world. During this turbulent time, Taichi Hiraga Keaton has difficulty finding a job in archaeology even though his long line of cases as an insurance investigator doesn't seem to end. As he navigates through dangerous adventures, Keaton encounters some bittersweet lives…

If you glazed over for a minute there, basically the mc loves archeology, wants to be a professor and have his own dig sites and such but because of skills he picked up in the army, he has much better luck being an investigator.

Great scenery, neat characters but pretty episodic to the point where I'd want to call it an anthology as characters don't really carry forward much. There's a lot of nitty gritty details about wars, factions and etc. around the world in that time period which can be a bit overbearing at times but that's what give the characters and situations the impact they would have gotten if they stuck around longer.

Also gotta say it's pretty educational, not just in the mc basically being macgyver and building self defense weapons out of whatever is on hand kinda way, but it takes a good look at Europe and how fucked it was during that cold war period as it indirectly and directly references many real world events. Maybe it's just my lack of exposure but I haven't seen that much media outside of documentaries really pinpoint Europe and the effects of war there and not on a large high level country scale, I mean like really looking at the lives of civilians and how they lived and died during that time.

Lots of variety, as I said it's very episodic as almost every chapter has a different subject ranging from finding a lost animal to settling spats between holocaust survivors or proving a statue is fake

I also have to mention something I've always appreciated about Urasawa's works that really stood out in Master Keaton for me and that's the diverse and well done racial representation. There's people from everywhere and it doesn't have that feel manga tends to have of like a Japanese person drawing what they think other people look like or something, it just looks like a person drawing other people, feel like I'm wording that weirdly but that's how I'm wording it.

Happy! (1993 - 1999) 254ch:

One day a high school girl, Miyuki Umino that takes care of her 3 younger siblings on her own, is approached by Yakuza who tell her that her older brother ran out on loans amounting to 250mill yen, approx. 1.8M USD) and now she needs to pay up or be sold into prostitution.

While wondering what to do she sees on the news a tennis player earned that amount in winnings so she decides that despite the difficulty she has to try.

Pretty dark premise and I'm telling you she goes through some dark shit but it's a great story, brilliant characters as usual, loveable idiots abound, antagonists that you can really really hate. You don't have to be a fan of tennis at all to appreciate the heartwarming n heart wrenching ups and downs. Teared up at least twice.

This was my favourite Naoki Urasawa work I read for the first time this month, this manga really showed me Urasawa really has THAT range fr.

Older Urasawa reads:

Monster (1994 - 2001) 162 chapters, this was my 3rd read:

A promising young doctor, Kenzo Tenma, ignores his superiors orders to operate on their mayor and instead operates on a young boy called Johan, that came in first, as he firmly believes all lives are equal. The mayor dies and the boy is saved but this leads to unfair treatment by his superiors and being left by his fiance. Soon after, not only does the young boy disappear but his superiors die from poisoning, leaving him, staff and ofc the police baffled.

10 years later during a string of serial killings, a key witness ends up being a patient of Tenma's but is killed for trying to reveal this by Johan, the real killer, now a young man who reappears in front of the doctor. Even more shockingly, he reveals himself as the one who killed Tenma's superiors all those years ago. Because of similarities in the murderers then and now, police pin it all on Tenma so he goes on the run across Europe to find the young man and clear his name.

Undeniably engaging from the jump, the ever building draw being who the fuck is this Johan dude? where'd he come from? why the fuck is he killing all these people? etc. etc.

Great side characters as usual with interactions that I can only call truly genuine whether they were sweet or sour.

There's a lot of nice interplay on the meanings of life and death, the notions of fear and hope, humanity and the inhumane, all weaved into every intricate thread of this story.

Not to be a hater but personally its relative popularity, as in relative to his other works, is a little upsetting. I get that it was his first critically acclaimed banger but he's done so much since then that isn't talked about enough for me. His later stuff not having anime adaptations doesn't help but if you've read and watched enough media adaptations in general you know that tends to mean diddly squat in terms of the quality of the source material . The industry unfortunately runs more and more on fan service every day.

Pluto (2003 - 2009) 65 chapters, read 3x:

The destruction of one of Earth's greatest robots and the murder of a leading figure in international robot rights seem unrelated at first, but both bodies were made into some bizarre collage with the central motif/pattern being a pair of horns placed by their heads, making them obviously related. The confusing thing is that the only thing that could destroy one of Earth's greatest robots is an even stronger robot, but could a robot really be related to the murder a human? Gesicht, a robot detective is put on the case and eventually comes to realize that all of Earth's greatest robots, himself included are being targeted.

As you can expect with any futuristic robot media there's an exploration of the concept of humanity vs the artificial but it's done so tenderly for lack of a better word and I'm not sure how often it's done that way in these noir type beats. Especially from the viewpoint of a robot mc.

I've probably said this for all his works so far but there's brilliant cast, great dialogue, great art that the context pretty much demanded and even though it's based on an arc in Osamu Tezuka's tetsuwan atom, better known as astro boy in the west, the greatest robot on earth arc to be specific, Urasawa really rose to and in my mind completely surpassed the challenge of adapting the work of he who is called the God of manga.

Also like man it's so crazy good for how short it is, please read this.

20th century boys (1999 - 2006) 249 chapters + 16 in the wrapup sequel 21st century boys, I've read both 2x:

The story follows a group of childhood friends, now adults who are trying to patch together their memories in an effort to uncover a conspiracy that seems to be based on games they used to play about saving the world from destruction.

It's pretty difficult to describe the events of the story further but it definitely stands out in my mind as the grandest scale of anything Naoki Urasawa has ever done though I wouldn't put it past him to go further.

As I said the story follows friends trying to patch together memories so the time period goes back and forth quite a bit. It can be pretty jarring trying to follow it strictly by year so I'd recommend just thinking about it in three tone periods, namely; childhood, present day and miscellaneous flashbacks. Separating childhood from miscellaneous flashbacks as their childhood remains within a constant range but as the story moves forward and present day changes so does the range of flashbacks they have.

That should hint a bit at the scale of this whole thing but outside of the breadth, there's a depth of characterization and dynamic that I haven't seen elsewhere.

Side note, if the length is frightening it's the type of read I'd recommend savouring anyways.

Billy Bat (2008 - 2016) 165chapters, this is my 4th time reading this:

A Japanese American mangaka/cartoonist, Kevin Yamagata, suddenly has his workspace taken over by police claiming they're investigating one of his neighbours for being a Soviet spy. In the middle of protesting this, one of the officers sees the comic he's working on, Billy Bat. He says he's seen it before in Japan, basically calling Kevin's work a copy. Kevin takes offence but admits he was stationed in Japan for some time and may have seen it and subconsciously copied it. As one of the lasting lessons his father taught him was that you can't steal people's stuff, he goes to Japan to seek out this potential original creator.

The story unfolds as he meets an artist that tells him the bat is actually something passed down throughout history, throwing him right into the middle of several conspiracies concerning real key incidents throughout modern history.

On top of everything, the bat starts talking to him, urging him to find a supposedly important and immensely powerful scroll.

My favourite piece from urasawa, brilliant in every respect, please please please please read this.

Just to share some resources before I go into the part 2 bit which may have spoilers irdk yet, there were two YouTube videos I really liked that I highly recommend.

The first was 'The greatest mangaka of all time' by the masked man and second was 'A guide to manga's greatest master' by the omnibus collector.

The first video is about 10 minutes long and uses the quality of Monster, 20th century boys, Pluto and Billy Bat as their rationale for why Naoki Urasawa is the greatest mangaka of all time.

The second is 20 minutes and pretty much covers Naoki's entire career and body of work, giving pretty rad descriptions of all his pieces, inspirations for them and a bunch of other really neat info. Bonus For those of you who are int that sort of thing, they also show the physicals they own off all the manga they talked about. really appreciated that. thank you omnibus collector.

Really appreciated these videos as most animanga fans and discussions focus on monster, sometimes 20th century boys and rarely anything past that unless they're ranking which I'm really not interested in.

Irulan had never hated Paul more the entire two and a half years she’d known him than she did when she was giving birth to his child.

It was rather awkward to give birth with his mother present, of all people, but she’d grown somewhat close to Lady Jessica, even confiding in the older woman about Paul’s treatment of her.

Still, her husband’s mother was better than a male doctor. She didn’t care how irrational it was, but she was absolutely certain that if she saw a man just then, she’d thrash him.

Presently, she was standing in her shift with her hands pressed flat against a wall, her face and body drenched in sweat.

Another contraction hit, and she let out a scream that could’ve shattered glass.

“Deep breaths, Irulan,” Lady Jessica encouraged gently. She put a hand on her stomach, clenching her eyes shut and trying her best to follow instructions.

Another hit, and she screamed again.

“They’re less than five minutes apart now,” Lady Jessica told her. “Let’s move you to the chair.”

She helped Irulan waddle over to the birthing chair, and at that exact moment, there was an urgent knocking on the door.

“Not now,” Lady Jessica said firmly. “We’re not to be disturbed.

“B- but my lady,” came the voice of one of her handmaidens as Irulan lowered herself into the chair with a groan of pain.

Another contraction was coming. She could feel it.

“He’s here, he’s coming up the stairs right now-“

“I said,” Irulan heaved, “I don’t want a doctor!”

Lady Jessica paused, her hand still gently holding Irulan’s arm.

“I don’t think it’s a doctor,” she said.

Before Irulan could ask what the hell the older woman was talking about, another contraction hit, and she screamed, clutching the arms of the chair so tightly her knuckles turned white.

She was too busy screaming to hear the shout of her name, or the bounding footsteps nearing the door.

What she did hear, however, was her husband’s yell of, “step aside! Let me pass!”

Irulan had given explicit instructions to not let anyone through unless she alone allowed it.

The only person whose orders held more weight than hers was Paul.

“How did he even know?” she groaned miserably.

“I sent word to him,” her mother-in-law confessed. Irulan whipped her head around, eyes wide. “I’m sorry, dear. He’s my son.”

“I can’t see him,” she pleaded, her chest heaving. “Get him out of here. Please.”

Lady Jessica opened her mouth to reply, but at that moment, Paul shouted, “I don’t care what she told you! Let me through!” and burst through the door moments later.

“Don’t fucking touch me,” Lea snapped vehemently. “Don’t you fucking dare. And don’t call me that. Don’t call me anything.”

“Lea,” Tim said, looking like he might cry, “don’t throw away what we have over something like this—“

“Something like this?” she snarled. “This was the most disrespectful, fucked up thing you could’ve possibly done. We have nothing.”

“We weren’t exclusive,” he reminded her. “If I’d have known you wanted to be, of course I— I mean, I do love you, I just didn’t think—“

“No, you didn’t think,” she said lowly. “You didn’t think about me when the first girl kissed you, or the second. You didn’t think about me when you put your arms around their waists, one right after the other—the same way you’ve always done with me!—and led them back to your hotel.”

“I’m sorry,” Tim said softly. “I wasn’t sober, sweetheart.”

She snapped, “Don’t call me that,” but he continued.

“I was drunk and I was high,” he told her. “I never would’ve touched them otherwise. I never would’ve touched them regardless if I’d known you didn’t want me to.”

“Why would you ever think I’d be okay with that?” she asked, tears trickling down her cheeks. “You were my best friend. I trusted you, Tim. I trusted you with my virginity and my body and my heart and— and my fucking soul and I… I loved you.”

His expression crumpled.

“I’m still your best friend,” he attempted to assure her. “I want you to love me.”

“Yeah, well, I don’t want to love you anymore,” Lea hissed. “I don’t want anything to do with you anymore. I never want to see you again.”

“You’re leaving me?”

“We were never really together, remember?” she reminded him, a bitter smile on her face.

“I want to be.”

He took a step towards her.

Lea scoffed, rolling her eyes. “I don’t give a shit what you think you want, Chalamet. You’re not in love with me. Not really. I don’t know what you’re playing at, and I’m doing my best not to care. Sleep with whoever you want.”

She turned and strode towards the elevator of his penthouse.

“I want you,” he snapped, striding towards her. “I don’t want anyone else. Do you know why I fucked them? Hmm?”

Tim gripped her wrist, spinning her around forcefully. She glared viciously at him and tried to wrench herself away, but his hold on her was too strong.

Typical, really.

“I fucked them,” he went on, his voice low, “because you weren’t there. They were a fucking substitute for the person I actually wanted. I don’t normally do that sort of thing, either, you know that—“

She scoffed again, continuing to attempt to yank her wrist from his grasp. “Like either of them were your first hookup. I know what those A-List parties are like, Mr. Hollywood. How many women have you slept with, hm? How many men?”

“No men,” he told her instantly. “I don’t sleep with men. It was only ever girls. And I honestly don’t know how many. It could be fifty, it could be a hundred. I don’t know. I haven’t kept track.”

Fic masterlist

I guess I have enough fics to do a masterlist, so… here, I guess. It’s all, and I do mean all, 18+. If anyone had asked Lea how long she sat on that couch, she wouldn’t have been able to give any answer at all.

Suddenly, after an indeterminate amount of time, the door burst open, and Tim came skidding to a halt. His robe—he must’ve gotten another; the one he’d been wearing before was still laying at her feet—was hanging off his bony shoulders and he was still tying it around his waist, his hair looked very much like he’d just had sex, possibly even multiple times, which was very likely because he had done exactly that.

His face split into a heartstopping grin. “You stayed,” Tim said breathlessly.

Lea blinked at him.

“You…” She gulped. “You asked me to.”

He grinned, strolling over to her, his movements casual. “You’ll be at the next shoot, right?”

“Um.” Another gulp. “I dunno, they said it was a one time thing…” Her voice was soft, hesitant. It was hard to imagine that not too long ago, she had had this beautiful man’s you-know-what in her hand.

“Consider this an offer for a permanent position, then,” he said with another grin.

Floored by this, Lea was silently gaping at him.

“If you’d be interested, I mean,” he added hastily. She still didn’t speak, so he went on, “What did they offer you? I’ll make them pay you double.”

“Dou-“ she sputtered. “There’s no need for that much of an increase, three hundred is more than enough—“

“Fine, four hundred fifty, then,” he waved her off. “That’s as low as I’m going.”

“There’s really no need for an increase at all,” she squeaked.

“You deserve it,” Tim informed her.

She blinked at him. “You just met me.”

“Yes,” he agreed patiently, “and I already know you deserve it.”

As Lea continued to blink at him with wide, shocked eyes, the silence between them stretched on. He was just standing there, grinning at her, looking perfectly content to rock back and forth on the balls of his bare feet.

Finally, she stood, brushing herself off and absentmindedly patting her thighs. “So, um…” She gulped nervously.

He was so tall.

“Are we done, then?” she finished.

His grin morphed into a smirk and he said, “For now.”

Stepping hesitantly towards the door (which she’d have to maneuver around him to get to), Lea found he loomed over her even more the closer she was to him.

“What days do you have school?” he asked as she neared him.

As promised, here is chapter one of the pornstar au! Some background info. This fic would not be possible without the help of my dear friends @meetmyothersouls and @alexagirlie!

Regarding this fic, just general background info:

Basically, instead of going into full on acting, Tim becomes a pornstar when he's about twenty. He's instantly massively popular and has won several awards over the past five or so years. He's interested in regular acting, of course, and otherwise, his background is still the same.

Bit of info about doing porn that I got directly from the source: it doesn't feel sexual. It doesn't even feel like you're having sex. There's a lot of other people in the room, and it's like you're filming a movie. It's acting. That's it. Plenty of pornstars are in monogamous relationships, it's a whole thing. That's not going to be the endgame here, but it is possible. And yes, I do know that fluffers may or may not exist. We're assuming they do don't worry about it.

Also, fair warning: due to the nature of his profession in this one, this fic does contain him having sex with other people (for porn. He does not have sex with anyone who isn't her for his own personal enjoyment, nor does the sex between him and the other women mean anything to him). I realize that that may not be everyone's jam, and that's totally fine. The sex he has with other people will not be described in explicit detail, and it's pretty standard stuff. He doesn't do anything particularly icky, in my opinion (like. Standard PIV stuff. No butt stuff), and it's only with women. He is not dating anyone exclusively at the beginning of the fic, though I imagine he probably sleeps around the normal amount for a guy his age. How many cishet men in their twenties of your acquaintance do you think would refuse regular sex with any woman they'd like if the opportunity arose? Not very many, is my guess. He doesn't sleep with anyone in a relationship, nor has he slept with anyone else outside of work when he himself was in a relationship. So... yeah.

The next few years have past princess Lucy and Erza have been living in the human world they have been looking for Lucy's pearl for the last few months

Lucy: Erza I'm going to take a walk around the beach ok

Lucy pov walked out of the door and sat down on the sand Lucy saw someone surfing the big wave knocked over the person with the surfing board they started swimming back to land

?: Hello there your looking pretty hot are you going to tell me your name?

Lucy: well my name is Lucy Heartfilia and please don't call me hot I don't like to be call that and what's your name?

?: for your info my name is Natsu Dragneel the most popular boy in the whole school

Lucy: well Natsu that's nice I think i heard it some where but I can't remember right now

?: please be alright Natsu! *she started to cry and then she took out a pearl and place it on Natsu chest the pearl started to glow and Natsu woke up*

Natsu: what just happen?

the mermaid stopped crying and hugged Natsu

?: I'm so happy that you're alright Natsu the wave knocked over the ship and you fell over board I had to save you

Falling Stars NaLu Oneshot

Falling stars were admirable; he had always had a hidden like for them. It was something that he hadn’t shared with anyone, it was something on a deeply personal level. They reminded him of the nights he had spent with Igneel, laying on the dragon’s warm belly admiring the night sky, making wishes on every one they saw. Their wish being the same; they just wanted to live their life out, fully and happily.

Though now, as he looked up to the sky, panting wildly and horribly out of breath, he saw a falling star that he didn’t want to see. It was Lucy, falling from high in the sky, the brightest out of all descending stars.

He desperately pushed all of his power into his legs, flames relentlessly covering them, increasing his speed considerably so that he could catch her. Can I catch her? As he had this sudden thought, he tripped over his legs, making him fall harshly to the ground. SHUT THE HELL UP. He fiercely scolded the part of himself that doubted his abilities to save her, and quickly got up. There is no possible way that I am not going to catch her.

More, he pushed more power into his legs, going the fastest he had ever gone in his entire life, no doubt wrecking the muscles in his calves, but it was worth it. I caught her back when she was being held by the Phantom Lord Guild, and I’m going to catch her now.

He looked back up to the falling star that was Lucy, and with his remarkable sight, saw that her eyes were open with tears running down them.

“LUCY!!!!” He roared her name with all his might, desperately wanting to give her any type of reassurance possible from the distance that was between them.

“Natsu.” He heard her small hoarse voice, with his hearing that was the same as a dragon's, and couldn’t help but hurt a little inside. She had been through what seemed like hell for this whole clock problem, and now she was falling out of the sky with tears dripping from her eyes.

With all the might he had left, he claimed the wings of a dragon and made his feet fly.

I swear I’ll catch you.

A Sam and Max inspired production: NOMT’s For Forever on November 17th, 18th, and 19th. More information under the cut.

Hi there! My name is Sio and for the past 10 months I’ve been a part of planning a yearly production at my school. This year, I wrote the script and was co-student director of a collaboration of musical numbers (from the choir program) and acting (courtesy of our drama club).

If you’re a fan of Sam and Max, there’s a 99.99% chance you’ll resonate with this story about 2 friends about to open a new chapter in their lives and end up time-traveling. With numbers like Spongebob the Musical’s (I Guess) I Miss You and Time Warp from the Rocky Horror Picture Show, it’s a fun student-led production that’ll blow you away.

A livestream of the show will be available at this youtube page, or Joey Seward, on Nov. 17th, 18th, and 19th at 7pm Pacific Standard Time (PST). There’s also a matinee on the 19th at 2:30 pm :))

She knows this. She's told Uma. In fact, the only reason she HAD Uma is because she thought they'd never leave the Isle and so her daughter would be relatively safe.

That entire plan goes out the window when Uma decides she wants to be free.
