PHILOSOPHIES OF EDUCATION (cont.)
To further contextualize this blog’s review of Mortimer Adler’s contribution – his application of the academic rationalist approach to curriculum development – this posting will complete its review of the four major philosophic traditions:  perennialism (academic rationalism), essentialism, progressivism, and reconstructionism (critical theory).
What remains after the last posting’s descriptions of perennialism and essentialism are those of progressivism and reconstructionism.  And as with the last posting, this one will rely chiefly on Augsberg’s chart of educational philosophies.[1]
Progressivism.  This philosophy takes a more holistic approach and shies away from making distinctions between content and/or the teacher.  If anything, this approach zeroes in on process or instructional strategies that have students utilize experimental testing or studies.  By doing so, students are directed to actively test ideas through experiments; in short, progressivism calls for interactive education.
As for content, it argues for students to use their experiences from their social worlds. They are to question what they see and experience, especially as they take note of the problems that they, and the people they observe, encounter.  “Learning is rooted in the questions of learners that arise through experiencing the world. It is active, not passive. The learner is a problem solver and thinker who makes meaning through his or her individual experience in the physical and cultural context.”[2]
And with that focus, effective teaching exposes students to active situations in which students learn by interacting and performing with what the situations demand or encourage.  So, learning becomes first-person, i.e., it results from what students do within the context of those situations.
Application of this approach has to date relied heavily on the scientific method which in turn imposes first-hand experiences in systematically organized lessons that usually test hypothetical claims or “if/then” speculations.  And the resulting learning does not rely on being told what to know, but on a process in which they take part and derive their answers to those various inquiries. While this might sound somewhat modern, progressive education has a history stretching back to the mid-1920s.
The leadership of John Dewey, until the mid-1950s, aimed efforts at improving the ways people lived their lives as citizens of a meaningful democracy not just as a political polity.  And that meant democratizing the nation’s institutions such as education.  “Shared decision making, planning of teachers with students, student-selected topics are all aspects [of this approach].  Books are tools, rather than authority.”[3]
Reconstructionism/Critical Theory.  The aims of this last philosophy have to do with social realities and how they relate to accomplishing a better society within a worldwide democracy.  The focus to attain those aims is to institute a curriculum that promotes social reforms.  Initially, the approach was spurred forward by the realities of World War II.
At that time, under the leadership of Theodore Brameld, a new awareness evolved, that being a realization that humans could annihilate themselves through technology motivated by cruelty.  But there was another side to this realization in that humans could also bring about beneficial societal arrangements using those same technological capabilities.
Another leader of this shift was George Counts.  He saw that education could be the vehicle by which society could create a new social order. The path by which to accomplish such a lofty goal – to overcome oppressive practices – was by preparing people, beginning with young ones, to address and discover those practices and policies that set social efforts toward that just order.  For example – and citing another leader of this approach,
Paulo Freire (1921-1997) was a Brazilian whose experiences living in poverty led him to champion education and literacy as the vehicle for social change. In his view, humans must learn to resist oppression and not become its victims, nor oppress others. To do so requires dialog and critical consciousness, the development of awareness to overcome domination and oppression. Rather than "teaching as banking," in which the educator deposits information into students' heads, Freire saw teaching and learning as a process of inquiry in which the child must invent and reinvent the world. For social reconstructionists and critical theorists, curriculum focuses on student experience and taking social action on real problems, such as violence, hunger, international terrorism, inflation, and inequality.[4]
To seek out these varied ambitions, each dealing with those aspects of life that are controversial – especially as the approach is applied to social studies and literature – teachers are to utilize inquiry into various perspectives and concentrate on the dialogue – the language – that, first recognizes it as a language, and second, defines or realistically reflects the assumptions and contexts of that which is under study. Where possible, the curriculum should be, according to this approach, in students’ “backyards,” their communities – i.e., implement a “first person” education.
One last point should be made.  This is not part of Augsberg’s chart, but it is the experience of this blogger that proponents of critical theory do seem to share a positive disposition toward Marxian philosophy.  For example, given the central role Paulo Freire played in promoting critical theory, one can definitely consider that influence to be well-categorized as Marxist. Patrick O’Connor writes,
The academic consensus is that Freire advanced a radical and even Marxist educational theory and practice. Pedagogy of the Oppressed [Freire’s most noted book] is promoted as one of the founding texts of so-called “critical pedagogy.” This has been bolstered by the promotion of Freire by various pseudo-left figures internationally from the 1970s to the present day. This includes, in the US, linguist Noam Chomsky (“Freire is a radical revolutionary”) and educationalist Peter McLaren (Freire, he recently wrote in Jacobin, “continues to be a lodestar for teachers working in poverty-stricken communities across the globe, and for just about anyone who’s searching for a sense of justice in an unjust world”).[5]
This connection is not offered as a criticism, but hopefully as an attempt to be complete in this presentation.
In the spirit of being upfront, this blogger considers himself a progressive.  His reservation with that approach is its bias toward scientific research as a sole mode of investigation, to the exclusion of other modes such as historical approaches.  With the New Social Studies movement from the 1960s, the social studies national effort has favored inquiry as the favored instructional strategy.
Despite this, that form of instruction has had little success in being adopted in America’s schools.  Teachers for the most part have not adopted inquiry as their go-to instructional practice.  Instead, they mostly rely on didactic methods.  On the other hand, a defender of parochial/traditional federalism would be apt to advocate perennialism.
That school of thought and its siding with the Western civilization’s great ideas and great books fit neatly with parochial federalism’s origins and its reliance on religious and other philosophical traditions. And with that rundown, one is better equipped to consider Mortimer Adler’s contribution to the description of the “milieu” commonplace of curriculum.

Things I should not have to say:
Don't threaten to blow up pro-shippers on social media. That's called a terroristic threat. Don't even joke about it. You might think it's funny and it might get a few eye rolls from the adults in the room, but the DoJ/FBI/Homeland Security/People it gets reported to have no sense of humor.
Trust me. I work with them. I swear any sense of humor gets trained out of them.
At best, they're going to knock on your door and explain to your parents/partners/assorted housemates what you're doing online. At worst, it's a no knock raid because they think you're a terrorist.
All it takes is one person reporting what you said. What may be an obvious joke to you probably isn't to the team of people going through the cyber tip line. While you might be joking, Cletus in Montana with the pile of tannerite talking about how he wants to blow up the government probably isn't. There have been too many Cletuses recently for online threats to be ignored.
TL;DR: Don't be a fucking dumb ass and make threats on social media. It's a good way to ruin your life.

Why I recommend age regression as a way to cope.
If you're stressed the F out, feel like you missed out or lost your childhood, or have terrible coping mechanisms? Then this is the post for you. (Maybe.)
Also before we jump in—Just wanna say that I'm not a psychologist, I'm just sharing tips and advice from my own positive and negative experiences. And that age regression may not work for you after you've tried it, but I say give it a shot! Especially if your current ways of dealing with life aren't.... great.
With all that our of the way—Post beneath cut!
So here's some resources for a TLDR version! But I'll be explaining age-regression, it's benefits to me, and why I encourage others to try!
Remember it is ALWAYS sfw! (Which means agere isn't a kink, never has been and never will be!)
So age-regression, or it's shortened name Agere (Takes Age, and the Re from Regression and combines them!) Is a form of dissociation in which someone mentally reverts back to a younger age! This can be anywhere from a few years younger, such as a 17 year old regressing to a 15 year old. Or it can be many years younger—Example being a 17 year old regressing to a 4 year old!
During this state: they are mentally younger, either fully or partially depending on the person. And do think like said age. And often their behaviors correspond with their regressed age, assuming they aren't masking it!
Sometimes you are aware you're regressed, and other times you're not—Both are completely fine!
It's a wonderful way to relive your childhood in a safe environment, feel young and cared for again like a child, or express your inner child!
Okay, but why would I use that to cope?
Don't worry, I hear your questions!
The reason it's a good coping mechanism, for me atleast, is regressing allows you to process your emotions at your own pace. Though they might still be overwhelming, I find it much easier to let my big emotions calm down when I feel small, because it's like they slowly burn off rather than going boom!
If you're stressed a lot, it's a good way to temporarily remove yourself from your burdens! Like you don't have any worries other than 'should I use the pink or blue crayon?' Vibes! Pressure slowly bleeding off rather than having an outburst.
And, for fun! It can be fun to connect with your inner child, do the things you liked as a kid and reunited with that mindset! You don't need to have missed out on your childhood to regress, it can be completely for fun!
Now now, age regression isn't always all fun and games. Because you do think like whatever age you've regressed to, you might have temper tantrums or get cranky or confused if something triggers it.
That's okay.
Yeah, it can feel icky—But me personally, i much prefer these occasionally than letting my emotions boil over and having a breakdown when I'm not regressed!
I've lost and wasted a lot of my childhood. This is my way of healing and re-experiencing childhood joy. Please, don't ever forget that type of wonder, it's so magical and so nice and cozy.
It's a way to cope because it can be an outlet, a comfort, a way to regulate emotions, a way to escape, a way to just relax. And, while not everyone turns out liking it, that's okay! But it works for me, and so so many others. I've had atleast 6 or so friends start regressing and they're still doing it to this day!
And the best part is it's temporary, so if there's more mature things you enjoy? You don't have to give those up, okay? You can find time to regress and relax, and come back to your normal routine later!
It's benefits can be:
Destressing.
Processing lots of emotions at once.
Enjoyment.
Getting to do things you were denied as a child.
Able to let out emotions via tantrums or fits in a much less destructive headspace.
Reliving a simpler mindset.
Helping with sleeping. (I find it much easier to nap/go to bed if I'm regressed!)
Getting a fresh feeling after you're done regressing.
Stimulating if understimulated.
Can help if you're also overstimulated.
Healing inner child.
Coping with trauma/stress in a healthy way.
Help with doing chores. (It's way easier to make chores fun if you're regressed in my experience, but some hate doing chores while regressed and that's cool too!)
And it can be different for each person!
It is absolutely okay to have a different experience, struggle regressing at first or even always, or not do it often!
I recommend if you want to start regressing—Find something that makes your inner child happy, indulge in the best things you liked or would've liked as the age you wanna regress to, find ways to incorporate your current interests into it!
Also things that you like, or positive things can help too!
It's honestly my best coping mechanism, it isn't 'weird' or 'wrong' especially if it helps you. And I can guarantee it's far better than plenty of unhealthy coping mechanisms!
Sooo... yeah! If you want, I recommend looking more into it! There's a whole community for you here on Tumblr, and other sites!
And this post mainly only covers the positives, but it's what I wanted to focus on!
Byee!! (Pssstt BTW agere doesn't have to be all pastels and cute and stuff!! Do what makes you happy! Use whatever colours and vibes you want!)

today's animal of the week is... sharks!!!
Requested by: @royalbabybat sorry I was late to uploading this...
if i got any of the facts here wrong, let me know
Sharks are apex predators that live in the ocean, and a special kind of fish called "elasmobranchs", which translates into fish made of cartilaginous tissues (the same material as your ears and the tip of your nose). They do not have bones yet they still fossilize! Sharks have rows of teeth which they lose and regrow quite a bit within their lifetime.
Tumblr media
There are over 500 different species of shark that all vary dramatically in size, the largest is the whale shark which is around 41.5 feet (12.6 meters) and the smallest is the dwarf lantern shark which is about 6 inches (15 centimeters). The average life span of most shark species is 20 years, but the spiny dogfish shark can live over 100 years! Sharks are actually generally not dangerous to humans, the odds of you being attacked by a shark is only 1 in 3,700,000 and only 10 of the many species of sharks has been seen to attack humans. Still, if you are swimming and see a shark, do not mess with it or touch it in any way, just like with any wild animal you see. Sadly, many species of shark are endangered due to over hunting.

being attached to that moment qifrey held a baby one time and my ideas for the future :)
#witch hat tag#orufrey#brief small post before i return to Real and Emotional things again...but tbh...this makes me feel real emotions too#i think the manga will end up with a epilogue chapter showcasing little things in the girls' future and orufrey holding hands or kissing...#to like Indicate things. if it doesn't happen beforehand.#But. Who. Knows. also then i suddenly started thinking about them raising a baby for ages today because of how narratively poignant it'd be#for things to end that way after having raised almost-daughters all those years. and how healing it could be for qifrey and etc.#thing i said on twt: girls visit so often that the kid's first words are Professor Olly#“deja vu.. i'm not your professor kid - i'm your father!”#sorry but they are literally a gay couple where one truly is like The Mom and one truly is The Dad. to me#i think a housewifey homemaker type lifestyle would make qifrey happy. be harder now that he's disabled - well that's why he has his man.#i dont normally care about stuff like fankids or whatever..characters becoming parents for real..but like..Come on#This is the couple to think about this with.....they already ARE parents..i want them to be happy for eternity#once all the horrors are over we have to make it there.....children are so precious families are so precious....#i have bad relationship with parents personally and haven't interacted with children in years. And yet i still know that.#the fact that orufrey fight for children to be safe and educated and happy...qif wants to help coustas too..#aaaanyway today was a pretty weird and difficult day so i deserved to think about happy futures for a bit. i hear it's possible#btw i'm most sure about tetia becoming the princess of zozah. i think that will happen. and riche should have the ribbon tassel.

Imagine being Orion in A Deadly Education.
People are mostly not that interesting to you. They don't like you so much as they like what you can do. Maybe at some point you tried to really connect with someone, and it didn't go that well, so you didn't keep trying. Fighting mals though? You're good at that. It makes sense to you, unlike most of the things people do. It's rewarding -- intrinsically rewarding -- and people seem to be happy that you're doing it? Because they don't like doing it but it benefits them. So, basically no downside.
And you go off to school and it's full of mals, and people think you're great because you fight the mals, and you ignore them as best you can when you're not fighting mals for them. (You're polite, your mother always wanted you to be polite and you don't want people to be mad at you. But you don't do anything beyond being polite.) And people seem to think you're doing a good thing. So. It's ok. It's good enough. The world makes sense, more or less. This is what you're for.
And one day you see a soul eater go under another student's door, and you destroy it like you always do. Except this person is mad at you. Which makes no sense. No one's ever been mad at you before, not for fighting mals. So apparently you did something wrong even though you only did what you always do which has always been right before. But you guess you should probably make it up to her? So when she says she needs to go to the shop at dinner you offer to go with her, why not?
Except somehow she's mad at you again. So you have to make it up to her even more now, you guess?
(You don't like it when people are mad at you, but you know what to do when people are mad at you. You Make It Up To Them, usually by doing whatever they tell you to or fighting a mal or both, and then they stop being mad at you. You prefer to understand why they are mad at you, but most of the time it makes no sense, and you know what to do when it makes no sense to you why someone is mad at you.)
So you guard her door while she fixes it. Which takes her a weirdly long time. You've just taken down several mimics, you're bursting with mana, you'd give her some if she asked. Mana has never been a scarce resource for you; on some level it hasn't really occurred to you that it could be a scarce resource for anyone else. People aren't that interesting to you, you don't think about them much, except when someone tells you to, like your mother making you do flash cards of other kids' names. But she doesn't ask, and she doesn't cheat either, she does things the long and hard way, which makes a third thing all coming from the same person that doesn't mesh with your pre-existing worldview. She's fascinating.
And then she pulls on your mana like it's nothing and she's even more fascinating. How did she do that? Is she a malificer? (Is that why she keeps being so mean to you, when nobody is ever mean to you?) What's going on?
And you've never voluntarily fought alongside anyone else before, but she's good to fight with. She's annoying, but she does also point out things you missed or didn't know.
And she stands up for you, in a way that nobody has ever stood up for you before. She's not nice. She's the opposite of nice. But it's starting to dawn on you that being nice is not the same as something else that seems like it should go with being nice. And if El is not nice to you but is that other thing, maybe some other people who are nice to you are...not that other thing to you?
It's a lot to think about.
Anyways. You like her. You're not very interested in people. But you are interested in El.
And then you have the best day of your life, when you've gotten to take on more mals and scarier mals than you've ever taken on before, and you did it and you were good at it, and you kind of didn't want to leave but you were supposed to leave because that was how the Mission worked, and then you were about to die because you missed the bell and the cleansing fires had started and there was nowhere to go, but at least you were going to die next to El.
But she didn't think she was going to die, and she cast a wall of mortal flame (who does that?) and it worked as a firebreak and you didn't die and no one had ever saved you before. That wasn't how the world worked. Who was this person who kept breaking the rules of how the world worked like they didn't even apply to her?
(And then you look around and she isn't there and you kissed her earlier when you thought you were both going to die, and she, uh, didn't react well and oh no, what if you've ruined everything what if you like her but she doesn't like you like that what if she won't want to be around you any more? What if the one interesting person in the entire world doesn't think you are interesting?) (it'd be ok, right? It was ok before.) (it wouldn't be ok. So maybe it wasn't ok before either.)

sigh i know dr. stone isn't perfect but I love it so so much because no other series gives me so many ideas and what-ifs to think about. it's good as is, of course. but honestly with this premise and these characters, if it could slow down and explore all the things it touches on briefly, it could've been phenomenal

something that pisses me off in RA is that Flanagan will occasionally hype up Pauline as this super important and prominent figure in Will’s life, even treat her as a proxy for the mother he never knew, and yet will just refuse to show it beyond the like. two or three (personal) conversations that they have in canon. I get that he was attempting to make her an important person in Will’s life but why not do that by actually making her an important person in Will’s life
#hey Flanagan I hate to tell u but just because she’s married to Will’s father figure does not automatically make her his mom figure#what REALLY annoys me is how easy it would have been for him to connect her & will#like hey. if only there were a pretty clear gap in Will’s education that halt couldn’t fulfill - say for example mmmm diplomacy?#(cause we all know how gifted halt is at conflict resolution)#then he’d have a valid reason to seek out a master of diplomacy for lessons in negotiating compromises & treaties#but no I guess not. Will’s just naturally good at diplomacy despite never really being exposed to it#yk what extra sucks?#if Pauline HAD taught will about treaties & stuff then him receiving the last name treaty wouldve been 1000x more meaningful#it would’ve spoken to her influence on him and solidified her as a sort of parental figure in her own right#AND as an extra extra bonus: if she came to the cabin to teach will about negotiation tactics and such#then we could’ve gotten more halt/Pauline interactions. as in: we could’ve actually seen them being in love ON SCREEN instead of just being#told that they loved each other#will could’ve had a chance to see how much the two of them mean to each other. and then he would’ve had some actual basis for a speech#at their wedding or whatever#but yeah no why do that when we can just imply that will & Pauline got super close off screen? same effect right?????#ranger’s apprentice#pauline dulacy#halt o’carrick#will treaty#I love these books so so much don’t get me wrong. but there are just some things……#anyway.#jackie rambles

Honestly human touch IS very important, and I am so glad you're treating it with care and showing a bit more awareness to it, because some people in my circle just... don't find this important?? And I don't like it at all when people I'm not that comfortable around touch me, even if they didn't mean anything malicious by it. Like I don't hate human touch, it just makes me so uncomfortable and annoyed and mad (i don't know why i get mad, but for some reason i do😭) if I get it from certain poeple.
For example: my dad. He just sometimes randomly pokes me and pats me, and when I lean away from his hands, he just start saying things like 'What, can't I touch you?' and then... proceeds (HOLY SHIT SNOWGRAVE REFERENCE???) to touch me again just to fuck with me :(( I know he means well, it's just udfghaoighhi the fact that he just shrugs off the hints that I'm not exactly comfortable with what he's doing is really not helping with our relationship.
OH MY GOD this turned out to be longer that expected. So yes, what I'm trying to say with this is that I greatly appreciate that you depicted this in such a realistic manner (or that you depicted this AT ALL).
HUMAN TOUCH IS IMPORTANT!!! keep that in mind people
🥺🥺 Of course! I am so glad to shed light on it! 🫂🫂🫂
Physical touch and human interaction are such an important aspect of our lives and both are very overlooked in individualistic societies. Humans are a social and group-oriented species. We need physical touch to feel mentally and emotionally stable! But how we get it and need it is different and special for everyone! Talk with friends/family and start slowly incorporating physical touch somewhere in your life. (I started finally hugging friends in late high school and I found out I actually really like hugging friends! It makes me feel happy!)
I recommend watching this video on Touch Starvation and its effects on Gen-Z by a professional doctor. I legitimately cried in the first few minutes, but it is so important to know!
HUMAN TOUCH IS SUPER IMPORTANT!!! Educate yourself so that you can inspire others to do the same ❤️❤️
