UNCANNY X-MEN #248-250
September/October 1989
By Chris Claremont, Jim Lee, Marc Silvestri, Dan Green, Steve Leialoha, Glynis Oliver, Tom Orzechowski, and Joe Rosen.
Tumblr media
The X-Men keep losing members as they face the Nanny (not Fran Drescher) and Zaladane (Lorna's sister).
Tumblr media
SCORE: 6
OK, I really have to explain such a poor score.
First of all, this was (apparently) , Jim Lee's first issue of Uncanny X-Men. Now, I am not sure how #248 was planned, but I am going to assume that it was the marvel way (art first, words later). In that regard I feel like Lee didn't do a great job out of Claremont's idea.
But then the story continued with Marc Silvestri, and I found a similar problem (although, less confusing action-wise).
The problem I see is that there is no balance between amount of time spent on soliloquies, and the action of the week. The X-Men are pretty much bouncing back and forth from one adventure to the other with little time to understand what is going on. Since this way of making comics is a team effort (in the best cases), I have to blame all of them for how confusing the action is... but mostly I have to side with the fact that the idea was good enough for it to make sense, and then the pacing went off rails with the art.
The book is very unforgiving to new readers as well, characters are rarely introduced and I think that has to do with Silvestri and Lee being fans already, something that Byrne didn't take for granted in the "old days".
Sure, it's art by Jim Lee and Marc Silvestri and it looks stunning, but pin-ups are a different art form. Of course, these artists went on to make much better stories after this ones.
So I can see all the ingredients on the page, but I cannot find the synergy. Take Storm's "death" for example. Havok is going through a really bad time, but as readers don't really spend much time with those repercussions because we have to jump on the problem of the week on the other side of the world (a Chilean town where people seem to speak in Mexican slang).
I see Claremont's dialogues acknowledging all the trauma, but the art doesn't feel connected to it enough.
Or maybe it's just me.

"The first Marvel film of 2022 has landed, and it is filled with musical easter eggs... here are some of the ones you may have missed.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is the second film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe centring on Dr. Stephen Strange, a neurosurgeon turned Master of the Mystic Arts.
Played by Benedict Cumberbatch, the character stars alongside Wanda Maximoff, portrayed by Elizabeth Olsen, a powerful sorceress, who was recently the subject of Marvel’s Disney+ show, Wandavision.
In Marvel’s latest film, Dr. Strange and Wanda experience the madness of the multiverse, and all the chaos travelling between universes can cause.
Highlighting the madness is a powerful soundtrack scored by Grammy Award-winning composer, Danny Elfman. The composer has previously scored superheroes movies including Batman (1989) and Spider-Man (2002).
From sonic throwbacks, to hidden visual cues, here are some of the musical easter eggs you might’ve missed in the new film. Warning, spoilers ahead!
Danny Elfman was brought on to write the music for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness after director, Sam Raimi signed onto the film in 2019.
Together, Elfman and Raimi have previously collaborated on Spider-Man (2002 and its sequel in 2004), 1990 superhero film Darkman, and most recently in 2013, American fantasy-adventure film, Oz the Great and Powerful.
Elfman’s original motion picture score for the new Doctor Strange film features 32 tracks of orchestral writing, with a ‘horror twist’. Raimi, known for his work in the horror genre, brought elements into the new marvel film, which was echoed in the score by Elfman.
In an interview with Marvel, Elfman explained while the full orchestral instrumentation was usual for a Marvel movie, he also incorporated a “special extra low brass sound that’s reminiscent of old-fashioned horror sounds”.

What other songs feature in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness?
We can’t go any further without addressing the epic fight scene in the final third of the film, Marvel’s first action sequence to use sheet music as a weapon of choice.
In a scene where Dr. Strange from our Earth meets a different ‘evil’ Dr. Strange from the incursion universe, the pair begin fighting in a high-level room that houses a piano and a harp.
Tumblr media
The ‘good’ Dr. Strange falls on a piano during the start of the fight, and this leads to music note-shaped balls of energy being fired by each sorcerer at the other.
Tumblr media
As they fly across the room, the music notes play out two well-known pieces of classical music, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 In C minor and J.S. Bach’s Toccata And Fugue In D minor.
The classical works are both weaved into an intuitive and immersive track by Elfman titled ‘Lethal Symphonies’, which successfully highlights every movement and blow during this magically musical fight.
Fans are divided by the music fight scene, with some saying it was the highlight of the film, while others complained it wasn’t serious enough to fit in with the overall tone of the film.
Our favourite reaction may be this tongue-in-cheek tweet response that attributes the scene to piquing an interest, for this fan, in music theory.
Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony and Bach’s Toccata And Fugue aren’t the only pieces of music to feature in the Marvel movie.
Elsewhere, Wanda’s scenes featured a return of her theme from Wandavision, and a fight scene involving Captain Carter, played by Hayley Atwell was underscored by Alan Silvestri’s Captain America Theme.
Early on in the film during a scene where Dr. Strange’s former love interest, Christine, gets married, another of Bach’s works, Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring plays, closely followed by Prelude To Act III – Bridal Chorus (arr. for organ) from Wagner’s opera Lohengrin.
Music from previous Marvel creations also makes it into Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
With the surprise inclusion of Professor Charles Xavier, played by Sir Patrick Stewart, in the film, the soundtrack appropriately includes the theme from X-Men: The Animated Series; a series which Marvel intends on reviving."

Dark X-Men Dossiers: Namor
The Atlantean ruler forges an alliance with Norman Osborn’s Dark X-Men
By Marc Strom
With the release of DARK AVENGERS/UNCANNY X-MEN: UTOPIA #1 on June 24, writer Matt Fraction and legendary X-artist Marc Silvestri begin one of the most eagerly anticipated stories of the summer. As Norman Osborn continues to extend his Dark Reign, he assembles a group of Dark X-Men loyal only to him. This week, Marvel.com presents the Dark X-Men Dossiers, bios on each of the team's members straight from Cyclops' personal files, along with writer Matt Fraction's thoughts and exclusive art from Terry Dodson.
It's All About the Politics As UNCANNY X-MEN writer Matt Fraction recently revealed, the Dark X-Men's leader, Emma Frost, has something of a past with Namor. Now, after their mutual involvement with Norman Osborn's Cabal has brought that history to the surface, fans should expect it to play a major role in the upcoming DARK AVENGERS/UNCANNY X-MEN crossover, "Utopia." "[UNCANNY X-MEN ANNUAL #2] is super important in terms of grounding and framing what [Emma and Namor's] relationship is," the writer explains. "['Utopia'] is an extension of that. They're both members of the Cabal with Norman, and now they're both on this X-team. It's the critical relationship of the team." Fraction also tells us that, if not for his relationship with Emma, Namor wouldn't have found himself on Osborn's team of X-Men. "Here's a little reveal: Norman has assembled every one [in his X-Men] but Namor," Fraction divulges. "Namor is Emma's pick, and part of the deal for Emma to lead the team is she wants Namor there. So Namor is Emma's insurance." But Emma's request alone didn't factor into Namor's decision to ally himself with her team.
"There is no silver bullet reason [for his joining the group], there's this very complicated web of political intrigue and media one-upsmanship," Fraction enlightens us. "Without revealing where several stories are going, this is the right move for Namor at this time." Given Namor's strong, forceful, and rather arrogant personality, the idea of him getting along with any team seems a little odd. But according to Fraction, Namor doesn't see the Dark X-Men in quite the same terms as most of its other members. "It's very much something that he tolerates, but the politics of the moment are much greater," he elaborates. "What he's doing above the surface and what he's doing below the surface—that's literally a metaphor—it's very complicated. He's not a team player, so this is more of an association, a political alliance if you will. One that's very crucial to this exact moment in time."
Cyclops' Strike File: Namor
The son of an Atlantean emperor's daughter and an American sea captain, Namor first came to the surface world's attention around the start of World War II, during which time he would frequently attack New York City and clash with the original Human Torch. Though he eventually assisted the Allies' war campaign, Namor has only ever acted in the name of Atlantean interests. Prince Namor has only taken action against the surface world for perceived injustices committed against Atlantis. Namor's a ruler first and foremost, and thus does not fall into any traditional categories of the X-Men's typical opponents. Though himself a mutant, Namor feels no particular allegiance with the surface-dwelling community now concentrated in San Francisco, and as such can only be counted on as an ally if the relationship were to benefit Atlantis in some political manner.
Most recently, Namor saw his kingdom destroyed in a massive explosion centered on Nitro in the midst of an attempted coup led by his own son, Kamar. He currently maintains an alliance with Latverian ruler and longtime Fantastic Four foe, Doctor Doom. As part of this partnership, Doom has allowed Namor to base a contingent of Atlantean soldiers in Latveria. While this alliance may appear unsettling, mutantkind itself should have little to fear from Namor unless he finds we have committed some perceived crime against the Atlantean people. With Atlantis in ruins and its people scattered around the world, Namor now must go about rebuilding his kingdom while also restoring its status on the world political stage. Every move Namor currently makes has some political logic behind it, and it is important to remember that he does nothing without reason.

Recently Finished
BOOKS
The Demon in the Wood by Leigh Bardugo, illustrated by Dani Pendergast
First Read
Edition: Hardback
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Final Thoughts: I'd been thinking about buying this gorgeous graphic novel for several weeks now, and yesterday (also thanks to the encouragement by my roomie/bestie) I finally caved. 🙈 I don't regret it at all, though, because it's a great prequel that really gives us a good glimpse into the Darkling's past, from before he became the Darkling. The art is also absolutely beautiful. ✨️ I will say, though, that being aware of what our demon in the wood's future looks like will connect you much more with this story than not knowing anything about the Grishaverse will, so I'd recommend this more to fans of the books than readers who aren't familiar with them. It does stand well enough on its own if you only read this and none of the novels, but the knowledge of what kind of person he becomes definitely adds a whole other layer. 💪🏻

Review: Batman & The Joker: The Deadly Duo #2
Batman & The Joker: The Deadly Duo #2 is an entertaining read that does a fine balance of Joker's jokes and Batman's seriousness. #comics #comicbooks #batman
I said in my review of the first issue, the draw of Batman & The Joker: The Deadly Duo is Marc Silvestri‘s art. Fans of the creator will flock to it and let’s face it, his style is one that stands out from the crowd. While I wasn’t as much as a fan of Silvestri’s writing on the issue, I still found the concept and moments entertaining. Batman & The Joker: The Deadly Duo #2 is far better in that…
