hi there! how do you feel about suicide squad: rebirth? i’ve heard a lot of mixed reviews and while i enjoyed it, i can understand a lot of the criticisms.

Suicide Squad: Rebirth the series or Suicide Squad: Rebirth the comic that leads into the series? Either way I feel obligated to say that they're good as a Captain Boomerang fan because it's like... One of very few comics that characterize him alright.

Like... In Suicide Squad: Rebirth (the comic) the burp here was kinda... Unnecessary? I get that he's supposed to be like... The Gross One™ and they're trying to show that but it feels weird because this is the only time it happens in the comic and it didn't happen at all after that in the series.

In the series it was replaced with something... A lot worse... Toilet humor.

This would be fine if this was supposed to be for a much younger audience, but I think the target audience is supposed to be late teens and young adults and it just happens so often in the series that it kinda feels less like toilet humor and more like the writer's barely disguised fetish.

But I did really enjoy Digger referencing to the Alien franchise.

Not only does it confirm the existence of the Alien franchise in the DC universe, but it gives Digger something other than Boomerang Man. You know?

Let's not forget his Uber Autism Moment™

And then there's how Captain Boomerang was characterized with Hack. He shows remorse. Like... Actual, genuine remorse.

He killed her, but as you can see even after he's done it he just feels awful. He felt obligated to do so because he's supposed to be "the bad guy" and he hates himself so much.

And Harley Quinn picks up on his guilt a few issues later.

THIS IS THE GOOD SHIT!!!!! THIS IS WHAT I WANT TO SEE WITH DIGGER MORE OFTEN!!!!!

Give me more of this and less of... Whatever the fuck John Ostrander did to him in the 1987 Suicide Squad comic. If you don't know John Ostrander decided he was racist in that comic and for some reason people still think it's canon when half of the stuff that happened in that comic literally can't even happen anymore as a result of things decided on the current canon such as Sam Scudder being alive and the wrist bombs not being a thing anymore. Not to mention his entire origin is completely different now.

Speaking of his origin... the Secret Agent stuff... exists? I wish they elaborated on it a little more I guess cuz it's an interesting concept. They only ever talked about it in the last 8 pages of issue 2 and then all of issue 47. It felt like it was trying to continue his characterization as a compulsive liar in issue 2 but then the concept was used as filler in issue 47 so it's just canon that he's a former Secret Agent now. And then it hasn't been brought up at all since. And that was 5 years ago.

In all fairness they haven't used him much since, but still. And uh... Seeing how this year's Batman: The Brave and the Bold comic is going with Harcourt's lil story... I think it's going to be a while before he shows up again. Which really sucks for me because it's not like there's a ton of fan content for him, especially not a lot of positive stuff.

Anymore it's Tim Drake fans who haven't seen him at all outside Identity Crisis, that one story from the Red Robin comic where Tim wanted to kill Digger, and Knight Terrors: Robin, as well as people who've literally only seen him in the 1987 Suicide Squad comic and then try to argue with me on what is and isn't canon and then they try to site an Encyclopedia that proves me right more than anything else in an attempt to prove me wrong.

But enough of that. Basically, I like it cuz Captain Boomerang is there and they at least tried to give him something. Unless you're talking about the standalone comic Suicide Squad: Rebirth then I'm neutral about it. Captain Boomerang is there. And that's neat. He's not the biggest douchebag there but he also didn't really do anything so I won't really go out of my way to look for it. Like... I had to pull up a digital copy for the one screenshot all the way at the top.

Harley Quinn designs but I give them scores because shes my favourite Batman character

Batman TAS: 10/10, the blueprint, simple and fun, and actually has the jester thingy down

New 52: 6/10, its good, but could be better, appreciate keeping the black and red intact

Dc Rebirth: 6,5/10, similar to the new 52 one, but it feels more fun (or maybe I like this run more lol), the blue does take away points, and is got that basic shorts plus croptop corset thing that i dont love, but still solid, would be a 7 if she had gloves on

Harley Quinn cartoon: 4/10, very boring, i dont like the red and blue thing, but its not awful does its job

Arkhamverse: 3/10, nope nope nope, she feels like a female mortal kombat character (/neg), appreciate the black and red, but the corset crop top thingy. do like the boots though! maybe my reaction is based on her face sculpt, feels wrong

Breaking Glass: 7/10, so fun! by now its clear i like red and black, and also harley should be a lil jestery always!

Suicide Squad movie: 1/10, BADBADBAD, ONLY ONE POINT BECAUSE MARGOT ROBBIE, THE SHORTS: EW, "DADDYS LITTLE MONSTER": EVEN BIGGER EW, RED AND BLUE: WHAT IS THIS AMATEUR HOUR??? HORNY IN A STRAIGHT BAD WAY, DO BETTER!!!

Birds of prey: 7,5/10 (for all outfits), oh they did better! as far as "casual harley" goes this is how you do it, not even mad about the colors because it fits within the movie (plus she is a MESS in this movie, perfect!), but it looks like shes having fun dressing up, which is a win, but i do wish they stuck to classic harley more...

The Suicide Squad: 9/10, GOODGOODGOOD looses a point because its barely in the film (although the red dress look is also great) and also one boot should be red with black laces, but this is a proper live action harley, slutty enough, black and red, a lot of diamonds, the jacket is also prfect, and margot robbie gets to shine

Batman Ninja: 8/10, great translation of her classic design, jestery! biggest issue is that harley never looks good in anime styles, they never capture her unique charms...

Upcoming Suicide Squad isekai: 2/10, too e-girly? (is that a word???) she looks like a teenage girl (a.k.a. how i would have liked to dress in highschool, thats an insult!), also too cute, harley shouldnt only be cute, she needs to be messier

I don’t entirely get how Bruce “no uwu we don’t kill our villains uwu not even the ones who cripple and kill my own sidekicks uwu” Wayne ALLOWS for the Suicide Squad to exist.

Like the majority to these bitches are your villains. So you won’t kill them yourself but you will turn two blind eyes to Amanda Waller’s villain killing protocol where she places bombs in people’s heads and explodes villains at her own leisure.

Hell yeah I have a shit-ton of issues with Bruce’s bullshit “no killing” policy and the utter uselessness of Arkham as an institution, but damn do I think his “no killing” policy should stretch to not letting Waller run her sick and twisted little squad where she blows up people when they don’t fall in line.

That just, fundamentally, feels like a thing the entire whole damn Justice League should not allow to exist.

I totally get the appeal of a team of villains wreaking havoc. I do. But the whole bombs in people’s heads and the fact that Waller is absolutely not shy to blow up heads, that just doesn’t... it doesn’t just not sit right with me, it feels like something that also shouldn’t sit right with the Justice League, and particularly Batman, who seems so ridiculously obsessed with reformation that he keeps playing an endless game of catch-lock-up-break-out-repeat with his villains.

I refuse to believe that Batman would let Amanda Waller get her murderous hands on Harley Quinn. I also refuse to believe that the Flash would let Amanda Waller get her murderous hands on Captain Cold.

These heroes are all about second, third and ten-thousandth chances and about not ever-ever killing their villains ever. So how is DC trying to make me believe they would be a-okay with the Suicide Squad existing and Waller enslaving their villains with a potential death sentence if they displease her.

I don’t understand how that makes sense.

who is match?

That . . . is a slightly complicated question, friend, because he keeps getting either retconned or getting given VERY alternate origins, hah. When I'M talking about him, I'm usually talking about specifically this version:

THAT Match is the OG version from the nineties, who was created by the Agenda as a clone of Superboy and meant to be the first draft/test run of a line of metahuman clone soldiers they wanted to produce to, like, sell to the highest bidder. He's an asshole who insists that he has no free will and therefore can't be enslaved while VERY CLEARLY BEING A PERSON WITH FREE WILL WHO IS BEING ENSLAVED, and the Agenda mostly trots him out to pretend to be Superboy and fuck with Project Cadmus or the superhero community in general or just try to murder Superboy/Young Justice/whoever they're annoyed with this week, I guess. His whole thing is he's better-educated than Superboy and knows more about literally everything but especially how their powers work, because he got the full education uploads (AND THE FULL INDOCTRINATION UPLOADS, JUST SAYIN') while Superboy got yanked out of his own cloning tube early and saved from . . . well, at least SOME of the mind control that Cadmus was gonna stuff in his head. SOME of it.

This Match considers Superboy obsolete and himself as a better, updated version of their design, and again, is way better-educated and better with their powers. He is also way less creative and self-motivated, however, which tends to bite him in the ass when Superboy decides to get batshit in their fights. Like, that's generally how Superboy beats him, when he does: he just does something absolutely fucking STUPID and it works because Match is thinking "no one would actually be that stupid--oh my GOD how are you THIS STUPID?!?!"

Later on for no apparent reason they decided to have him genetically degrade and go Bizarro in Teen Titans, which annoyed the fuck out of me because it's actually the literal worst possible thing you could do to a character who prides themselves on being an improved design and more intelligent than their rival/enemy/foil, but like . . . the narrative was not really examining that, from what I know of it, the narrative was just "oh Bizarro Superboy is here to upset/freak out everybody while Kon is dead and also now he's being mind-controlled by an asshole and the good guys are . . . fine with that? for some reason??" and just . . . sigh. SIGH. And then he gets fucking murdered and used for scrap parts to make MORE Superboy clones, which oh my god, fucking horrifying TOO and YET . . .

Though apparently in Rebirth, he's alive again and they've semi-redone his origin and made him a clone of Superboy that Amanda Waller has inexplicably managed to produce and even more inexplicably somehow uploaded all of Kon's memories into? Somehow?? And is forcing to work on the Suicide Squad for her, because fuck Amanda Waller, jfc. And for a while in there he thought he WAS Kon, because like, how the fuck would he have known different. So that was fun for him to find out about, I guess! Especially because he ALSO started to Bizarro-degenerate about five seconds into that particular realization.

FYI KON HAS TRIED TO SAVE THIS BOY SO MANY TIMES AND IT HAS NEVER WORKED. NEVER. IT KILLS ME.

Also he seems to have inherited Kon's thing for older women along with his presumable memories, cough cough cough.

And ALSO there's a version of Match in Young Justice Animated who is actually OLDER than Conner, because he was directly cloned from purely Kryptonian DNA and then failed as a weapon because he wasn't controllable, and Project Kr was created as a hybridized clone after he became too unmanageable to use. He's apparently just full-stop psychotically violent due to shitty mental conditioning and instability in his Kryptonian DNA, and very much unbalanced, which is waaaaay different than the more calculating and educated version we first got in the comics.

It actually low-key makes me insane that they apparently just decided to make a character who was all uncontrollable violence and rage and just, like . . . never revisit him or actually HELP him despite the fact that he is EXPLICITLY both mentally AND physically compromised and therefore can't really be considered to be, you know, an informed asshole making informed asshole decisions any more than Conner was when his pod first got cracked. Project Match is a fucking baby who's had a very shit excuse for a "life" and has been CONDITIONED to respond violently AND is effectively suffering from a genetic disorder, but we're just gonna . . . ignore that, I guess . . . and punish him for it? I guess?? For being how he was made and not having the mental capacity to figure out how to be anything else in the, like, thirty fucking seconds of actual consciousness the series allows him??

And I am just not gonna talk about what they did to him in the tie-in comic, hahaha. FUCK that tie-in comic.

Hello! Thanks for the awesome question!

I'm not sure I have a FAVORITE writer, but here are some I do like:

Shawn Martinbrough took over for RHATO Rebirth for the last couple issues and us writing Redhood: the Hill, and I did really like his writing for RHATO, much better than Scott Lobdell

Gretchen felker-Martin wrote Jason's issue for Titans Beast world tour: gotham and it was hands down the best jason characterization I've ever seen since under the redhood despite him being a furry in it lol. She might be my new favorite actually

Geoff Johns wrote Batman: three jokers and I gotta be honest, for all its flaws (including some jason and Barbara), it'd probably one of my favorite series. The mix of the art, the exploration of chronic pain and trauma because of the joker, ugh so good.

Of course, I've got to give props to Judd Winnick for lost days and under the red hood. How jason was before he was retconned into being a sloppy stupid hothead, he was clever, cunning, sneaky, SMART.

An honorable mention is for suicide squad get joker, but definitely not my favorite

As for artists, me! (Just kidding) that's also hard to pick just one favorite, but I LOVE these artists

Dexter soy has such a unique way of doing comic art, but I just love it. He makes jason look his age and not, you know, a 50 year old Vietnam War vet. And I love the way Artemis was drawn as a strong, tall amazon woman with muscles and not, you know, skinny feminine woman like old style comics.

I also just LOVE Alex maleev for his work in suicide squad get joker. The people are drawn well, the color palette, it's all so visually appealing. And again, jason isn't 50. It seems like a lot of comic artists forget that most members of the batfamily are in their 20s

Jason Fabok gets a mention for his art in batman three jokers. It was beautiful. Same reasons too. I'm also a sucker for line art

Finally, one of my most favorite artists isn't even a jason todd artist but I wish he was. Bruno Redondo does a lot of the art for the newer Nightwing comics and I LOVE IT. The color scheme is so visually stunning, everyone is drawn so well, it's beautiful.

And call me a narcissist but I gotta add some of my own art in here lmao but thanks for the ask!!! This is very exciting for me and I love talking about jason todd as he is someone I've studied and read everything about for the last few years

I've reached my image limit so I might start posting my own art as well
