Hey, Guys - It's Called Wandavision For A Reason
It’s not Wanda-Pietro-Mephisto-DoctorStrange-Vision…
CAUTION: SPOILERS FOR THE LATEST EPISODE OF WANDAVISION (1X09) FOLLOW.
Earlier today, the series finale of Wandavision (titled, rather aptly, The Series Finale) aired on Disney+. The show has garnered a devoted following of fans since its release on January 15th, 2021, all of whom have spent the past eight weeks theorising and speculating potential outcomes for the characters. The show certainly reached a high level of hype, particularly with episode five’s introduction of Evan Peters as Wanda’s brother, Pietro Maximoff.
Considering that Evan Peters previously played the X-Men version of the speedster mutant, an American version named Peter, his entrance sparked excitement amongst viewers. Many believed his introduction was a confirmation for all the multiverse theories spinning around currently. Particularly with Olsen confirmed for the Doctor Strange sequel, Multiverse of Madness, and the speculation of Spider-Man’s third MCU outing including two previous iterations of the web-slinging hero, it seemed that Peters would serve as a doorway into confirming the existence of the multiverse.
Those of you who have watched finale will know that this new version of Pietro isn’t Pietro at all, nor is he Peter, but just another unfortunate Westview citizen, victimised by Agatha/Agnes in her attempt to discover the truth behind Wanda’s powers. His real name? Ralph - yes, that Ralph. The previously mentioned but never seen husband of Agnes. His full name?
Ralph Bohner.
Little bit on the nose, true, but this is Marvel we’re talking about.
However.
The show is titled Wandavision. From the very beginning, the story has been focused on Wanda’s refusal to acknowledge her truth. How she has run from her grief and trauma, choosing instead to hide away in a fantasy world where everything is safe, controlled, and familiar. Whilst theorising about how this show will tie-in to the wider universe and potentially lead onto the upcoming projects (Spiderman: No Way Home, Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness) has been fun, it is clear to see that many viewers have lost sight of what the show is actually about.
While we’re seeing what is, for all intents and purposes, a rebooted origins story for Wanda as the Scarlet Witch, the story itself is grounded in themes of trauma, grief, and facing up to reality. We are introduced to a grown-up Monica Rambeau, snapped back into existence after 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, who is forced to adjust to a reality where she disappeared for five whole years, and lost her mother, without ever getting a chance to say goodbye. Her understanding of Wanda’s pain forges a bond between the pair, despite their rocky beginnings.
Wanda, too, was snapped out of existence by Thanos, just moments after watching the love of her life brutally murdered - and this is after she was forced to kill him herself. Not only does she face losing her soulmate all over again in the Wandavision finale, she also comes head-on with the prospect of losing her children. Wanda is a character who is deeply tragic, orphaned during a war, dealing with the loss of her twin, her boyfriend, herself. We must also remember that due to the events of Endgame she has also lost friends, Steve Rogers and Natasha Romanoff.
Wanda comes full circle by the end of the final episode. She bids farewell to her children, her husband, and the life she has to come to know in Westview. She allows the Hex to come apart, freeing the residents from her control - and, in essence, lets go of the very things that kept her trapped in her own reality. Renewed by the realisation of her full potential, and ready to begin her healing process, she departs, and we say goodbye to Wanda Maximoff. The second post-credits scene shows us that she is off the grid, in isolation, astral-projecting whilst studying the Darkhold spellbook.
I know some are disappointed that Doctor Strange did not make an appearance, that Agatha was the big bad, not Mephisto or Nightmare. But the show made a good choice in allowing it to stay true to its original intentions - exploring the effects of loss, and how, sometimes, holding on can cause more pain than letting go. The introduction of yet another all-powerful being was not required to fill in any part of the story. To have fake-Pietro turn out to be real-Pietro would contradict all of Wanda’s closure, her choice to let go of the past, and look to the future. Sure, the ending is tragic, and heartbreaking - but it’s hopeful, too. We know this is not the last we will see of the so-called harbinger of chaos. Wanda Maximoff’s story may be at a close, but the story of the Scarlet Witch is only beginning.

The Visions as upologetically as themselves...walking through WestView, not hiding themselves from anyone. Showing their true colours to everyone (both the physical/outfits, and the inner (character growth, their powers...)

The Darkhold
"Look, if the internet is a garden hose, this book is Niagara Falls, blasting the universe's deepest thoughts through your eyeballs." "It's a piece of technology, a tool." "So's a grenade, until it's in the hands of a child."

Let's talk about Loki, Sylvie, and the ship of Theseus.
(spoilers for WandaVision, be warned)
So. In WandaVision we have a wonderful moment (in episode 1x09, to be more precise) where a fascinating topic about identity is discussed.
V: You are familiar with the thought experiment of the Ship of Theseus in the field of identity metaphysics? WV: Naturally. The Ship of Theseus is an artifact in a museum. Over time, its planks of wood rot and are replaced with new planks. When no original plank remains, is it still the Ship of Theseus? V: Secondly, if those removed planks are restored and reassembled, free of the rot, is that the Ship of Theseus? WV: Neither is the true ship. Both are the true ship.
So, what does this mean concerning Loki and Sylvie?
They're both Loki variants. This has been established and I'm not here to discuss that. But, what does being a variant mean, when thinking about the ship of Theseus?
When you strip them of the planks and rot—and all that is left are a few circumstances, like their name and being adopted by the king of Asgard in their respective timelines—are they the same being?
Going back to WandaVision, we see that White Vision struggles with his identity. He implies he can't be Vision because he doesn't have the Mind Stone. He can't be Vision because he doesn't have the memories and the experiences that the other Vision has.
WV: But I do not have the Mind Stone (he thinks having the Mind Stone is what makes Vision, Vision). V: And I do not have one single ounce of original material (he is J.A.R.V.I.S., and he is Ultron). Perhaps, the rot is the memories. The wear and tear are the voyages. The wood touched by Theseus himself.
And then Vision proceeds to do something: he gives White Vision his memories back. And it's in that moment (when White Vision gets back the rot, the wear, and tear) when he regains his sense of self and proclaims his identity ("I am Vision").
In this case, the ship of Theseus IS the ship of Theseus, not only by name.
Vision and White Vision are constructs, they are made of parts, their memories are interchangeable. This is not the case with Loki and Sylvie. Their "parts" are their memories, their life experiences. They're not interchangeable. They're not "carbon-based synthezoids." Their journeys through life have made them the way they are. They are different, we see that during the entirety of the show. Them sharing a name, and a place in their timeline doesn't make them the same person, not by a long shot. ("Neither is the true ship. Both are the true ship.")
I love this parallel so much. I don't get why people keep screaming at the top of their lungs THEY'RE THE SAME when Marvel already told us in WandaVision "no, they aren't."

I really couldn't see how this story could be resolved in a satisfying way in just the 1 episode we had left, so I had all my fingers and toes crossed that the WV Twitter didn't just awkwardly phrase that tweet, but that there were actually 2 more episodes to come. Alternatively my cracktastic idea about 1x09 was that after a normal-length episode we'd get the credits and then a mid-credits scene that's also episode length.

What do you need to talk about in episode 1x09 Hannibal - is that when Will is lending up against the ladder or them talking about co-parenting Abigail? Or something else entirely. I'm so glad you are watching this show - it needs more lovely people in it - though the fandom is still trying to go strong. I can't wait until you see the finale
Hey thanks! It’s something else entirely. My issue is with a particular setting in 1x09. The “body totem pole” that they find in Grafton, West Virginia, on a beach. I live in WV and the entire shot of the beach with an ocean was hilarious to me. WV isn’t a coastal state, and though we have some large lakes, the shores/geography look nothing like that as far as I know 🤣. So nothing terribly interesting, but just something I couldn’t ignore.
I’m up to 1x12 now and I really just want Hannibal to be Will’s friend and to tuck him in at night and make sure his fever goes away?? LOL

Why tf was that scene where everyone was glaring at Wanda, made to make us go “poor Wanda”? She hurt them and manipulated them. It was an accident at first, but even then, they got hurt, and she still went through with it AFTERWARDS. They have every reason and right to hate her and be angry. She was the one in the wrong here.
